Territory description

Interactive map

Statistical data

Territorial features are the remoteness of the municipality (within the boundaries of Moskovsky district) from Moskovsky Prospekt, the presence of an industrial zone and vast areas not occupied by residential buildings.

The Gagarinskoye municipality is located on the territory of the Moskovsky district of St. Petersburg.

The boundaries of the district are along Yu. Gagarin ave., Blagodatnaya st., Vitebsk railway line, connecting railway line, Moskovsky highway, Danube avenue, Kosmonavtov avenue and st. Ordzhonikidze. nine0003

The eastern border runs along Vitebsky Prospekt and runs parallel to the line of the Oktyabrskaya Railway (clear separation from neighboring municipalities located in the Frunzensky District).

On the territory of the Gagarinskoye municipality there are such dominant objects, known to all residents of the city, as the SCC “Petersburg”, the Central Research Institute. Krylov.

Along Vitebsky Prospekt there are the largest dealer centers “Mercedes”, “Volvo”, “Mitsubishi”, “Ford”; a dealer center for Korean cars is being built on Tipanova Street, and Subaru and Lada centers are being reconstructed on Dunaisky Prospekt. nine0003

In the industrial area bounded by Blagodatnaya and Kuznetsovskaya streets, Yu. Gagarin and Vitebsky avenues, Talosto, Bravo, Soyuzstroytrest, Trayv, Stroydetal, and the 2nd furniture factory are located among others.

Retail trade is represented by the O Kay supermarket, Yuzhny market, Pyaterochka stores and many small and medium retail outlets within residential areas.

The residential quarters themselves consist of houses of the first mass series of the early 60s, have clear boundaries coinciding with the boundaries of electoral districts (4 in total). nine0003

There are 9 schools, 13 preschool institutions, 2 secondary specialized educational institutions, an orphanage, a general polyclinic and a children’s polyclinic on the territory.

According to statistics, as of January 1, 2019, 70,425 people live on the territory of the municipality. This area was built up and settled in the early 60s of the last century. Out of more than 200 residential buildings, 99 are houses of housing cooperatives, i.e. Initially, half of the inhabitants of the district belonged to the fairly well-to-do strata of the population of Leningrad at that time (50% were scientific and creative intelligentsia, skilled workers and the highest engineering level of large Leningrad enterprises). To a large extent, the same stratum settled in state houses. This determined the homogeneity of the social environment and the high educational level. The insignificant migration of the population, the residence of children with their parents allows us to say that this situation has survived to this day. This is what determines the features of the electoral process and the reasonable exactingness of the population in the period between elections. This stimulates the deputies to work informally, responsible and professional. At the same time, more than 60% of the residents are pensioners, the rest are the working population, students and children of preschool age. nine0003

Investment climate.

Location of land plots free for attracting investments along transit routes (Vitebsky pr. , Tipanova st.), the presence of large infrastructure projects that are under completion (an overpass along Danaisky avenue, punching Vitebsky avenue to the ring road), as well as the existing the infrastructure of service and trade enterprises makes investments highly attractive and quickly paid off. At the moment, the following major projects can be distinguished: the construction of a shopping and entertainment center near the SCC (the investor is the French company Vincy Construction Grand Proge, the volume of investments is about 80 million dollars), the construction of a shopping center along Tipanova Street (the investor is the Piter ”, investments of about 30 million dollars), construction of the South Market shopping complex (investments of about 10 million dollars). Projects for the construction of 4 dealer auto centers with service areas are close to completion (total investment is about 2.5 million dollars). nine0003

Housing construction is actively developing: at the moment, more than 10 objects are being built, five of which are participating in the rehabilitation program for houses of the first mass series. To date, work under this program has been carried out in 3 Khrushchev houses (it is worth noting that this program and its first implemented projects have significantly reduced the intensity of passions during public discussions of intra-apartment development projects). Significant funds are invested in the repair of roads and improvement facilities. nine0003

At the same time, on the territory of the Gagarinskoye municipality, there is a significant area bounded by Dunaisky and Vitebsky avenues, Moskovsky highway and the lands of the Shushary state farm – the 14th quarter. After appropriate preparation of the engineering infrastructure, relocation of industrial and other enterprises, this territory will have significant investment attractiveness (comparable to the areas along the Pulkovskoye Highway). Thus, the territory of the municipality is developing dynamically, attracting investments and increasing tax revenues, creating jobs for the population of the district, while its investment potential has not been exhausted for the next 5–10 years.

Health and Nutrition

We participate in the California Food Program and have an onsite kitchen and cook, so all meals are homemade with love and care with emphasis on nutrition and child friendly options.

Exploration

Children learn by engaging the world around them in meaningful ways.  With a trusted adult as their guide, they learn to interpret, interact, and build on life experiences.  Our facility allows for extensive exploration both indoors and out for a broad base of life experiences which allows the children to grow and develop in a safe and nurtured setting.

Self-discovery

Our spaces are created to provide a safe, but stimulating atmosphere with the ability for various exposures.  While teachers lead many group activities throughout the day, we set aside time for individual interests and pursuits to be followed.  A child who is interested and learns through self discovery builds confidence and will retain the lesson for a lifetime.

Play based curriculum

Evidence based practices have shown that children learn best through play.  Our curriculum is based on building a foundation for learning through multiple forms of stimulation and exposure.  Children want to touch, feel, see, and do.  With guided experiences through many realms of encounters, children are learning appropriate social interactions, balance and coordination, healthy eating habits and physical activity, culture, natural sciences, and other life skills while also learning the fundamentals of ABC and 123s.

Hands-on experience

Our rich curriculum includes weekly themes and assemblies with daily enrichment activities.  Children learn about culture through holiday events and celebrations.  To supplement this, we host many special events.   In the past, we have hosted pony rides, visiting farm animals, the Roaming Reptiles presentation, and many more.  Talk to our directors to learn about upcoming events and activities!

Professional staff

Our professional staff are all trained in early childhood development at the college level.  They attend conferences and meetings of professional development throughout the year.  Please take a minute in your day to appreciate your teacher!  They make a world of difference in your child’s life.

This service is offered free to families with a child 6 and younger, and available in English, Spanish, and Cantonese.

SafeStart is a collaboration of Safe & Sound, APA Family Support Services, Instituto Familiar de la Raza, and YMCA Urban Services.

KP rating of safe products with prices and reviews

When we become parents, many responsibilities immediately arise: from choosing the softest clothes to gentle skin care products for the child’s body.

There is always a set of products for children on the market, but how do you choose the best quality? The composition may contain chemicals: surfactants, phthalates, sulfates – which can irritate or even harm the skin. Experts also recommend the use of neutral or slightly acidic pH detergents that contain emollients and protective factors when bathing babies (1).

We always want the best for our children, which is why we researched many products and listened to expert advice to find the best baby shower gels.

How to choose a baby shower gel

Here are a few points that you should pay attention to when buying a product.

    Fragrance and Color Free

Prefer products that are fragrance and color free, in some cases they can cause percutaneous sensitization (increasing the body’s sensitivity to irritants causing an allergic reaction).

    Gel must be clinically tested

If your child is prone to allergies, make sure every bath product you buy is dermatologically tested. For example, some shampoos have CAPB (cocamidopropyl betaine) foaming agent, which can cause an allergic reaction or eye irritation.

The gel has a lot of positive reviews

Children’s products – the area in which it is better not to take risks. The surest way is to ask your pediatrician for a recommendation. And if you’re shopping for a shower gel online, read as many genuine customer reviews as you can.

    Gels enriched with vitamins

Gels based on vitamins E, D and A are on the market today. They provide additional nutrition for the skin.

These cleansers can be found in drugstore dermocosmetics.

    Popular questions and answers

Our expert dermatologist Alexandra Kirillova answers questions about baby shower gels.

Are parabens and sulfates in baby shower gels dangerous?

Parabens are used in cosmetics, including shower gels, as preservatives that inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and prevent the product from spoiling prematurely.

Numerous studies have confirmed not only the safety of parabens, but also their low allergenic potential.

And unfounded public opinion about the dangers of parabens has led to their replacement in many products with preservatives that have a much higher allergenicity.

Sulfates in cleansers act as surfactants (surfactants) that saponify sebum oils and effectively cleanse the skin of oil and impurities.

They are not evil, they are an indispensable component of all shampoos, shower gels, soaps.

However, they can differ in their saponifying power and, accordingly, the degree of aggression.

For baby bathing, it is better to choose non-alkaline products with a neutral pH, a minimum concentration of surfactants and without the most aggressive of them.

For example, among the most commonly used surfactants, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), the latter being less aggressive than the former and less likely to dry out the skin, it is even used in children’s cosmetics.

A Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) is an inexpensive, rich lather, good cleanser, but is quite aggressive and more likely to cause skin irritation than previous ones.

How many times a week is it better to wash a child?

It is better not to wash the child with a cleanser more than 1-2 times a week, the rest of the time it is enough to wash only with water, without a cleanser.

Can I wash my baby with adult shower gel?

You can, if the adult gel has a neutral pH, does not contain too strong fragrances and does not overdry the skin of a child. I would not recommend washing a baby prone to xerosis (dry skin) and atopic dermatitis with an adult shower gel.

What is the difference between shower gel and shampoo?

Their formulations are very similar, but the shampoo usually contains a higher concentration of surfactants needed to saponify scalp oils.

Shampoos may also contain additional active ingredients, such as antifungals to treat dandruff or stimulate hair growth.

Helen Meyer figured out how to improve the child care market and help unemployed parents to earn. Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz have already invested in her startup

Forbes Ukraine has released a new issue of the print magazine. It contains almost two dozen exclusive materials. You can buy the magazine with free shipping here.

In May 2020, Helen Meyer began to realize that her temporary status as an unemployed mother during the pandemic would not be so temporary. Two months earlier, her previously successful Boston-based education technology startup Forward F1rst went bust the same week that her 16-month-old twin sons’ daycare closed. The role of the one who will sit with the kids automatically went to her.

Almost immediately, Helen began to look for a new job, because, like many others, she believed that everything would soon return to normal. “I submitted my resume to the company in mid-May, but realized that I could not accept it,” Meyer tells Forbes about the new job offer. “At that moment, I already understood that this whole situation will be with us for a long time.”

Meyer was not alone with this problem, as the epidemic forced many women to leave their jobs to take on the lion’s share of caring for children and sick families when schools and other institutions closed their doors.

According to the National Center for Women’s Legal Aid, this is the fate of more than 2 million women. Meyer began researching trends in childcare and parenting styles, trying to find a solution to a new problem, as women in various parenting groups on social networks spoke about the same situations.

When Meyer polled some groups last July about potential solutions, she got more than 2,000 responses in less than a week. After that, she began organizing free childcare groups. She noticed that unemployed parents really like this kind of work, and therefore she thought about how to create a system that would allow such parents to earn money.

Last fall, Meyer launched Otter and provided childcare for 7,000 families and helped 3,500 unemployed parents collectively raise $20 million.

New York-based startup Otter raised $23 million in a Series A round led by Sequoia Capital. Abstract Ventures, Thrive Capital and others also took part in this round. Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz was also a participant in the round, and it also led a previously undisclosed seed round last fall when it raised $4. 8 million.

Meyer said the capital will be used to increase the trust and security team so that the company can be sure its internal infrastructure is strong enough for further expansion.

“Our goal is to ensure that Otter is the place to find safe and secure childcare,” Meyer explains. “We really want to communicate our mission to people and help them choose a solution that is convenient for them, in which they will be confident.”

Meyer recently hired Steven Seeger as CEO of Operations and Legal, and Dave Wielern, one of Airbnb’s early Trust and Safety team members.

On the company’s platform, parents and potential carers answer questions about their parenting style, approaches and daily routine. When there is a match, the caregiver’s story is carefully checked and the details are clarified to make sure both parties are happy with the choice, and only after that the parents bring the child for the first time.

Meyer says the feedback is positive so far. Parents find it more personal, and parents who don’t have jobs other than housework and parenting get paid for doing it anyway. The service is now available in Chicago and New York, and the company has a waiting list. Meyer hopes to expand to other cities in the near future.

While it was the pandemic that shed light on childcare problems, many of the problems working parents face were long before the pandemic. Meyer jokes that she knew about them as a child but thought they would be sorted out before she had children of her own.

Jess Lee, a partner at Sequoia, the firm that led Otter’s latest round of investments, says her biggest attraction about the startup is that it makes childcare generally more accessible. This, in her opinion, will allow it to flourish even after the pandemic.

She adds that options such as day care or babysitting – if parents can find affordable offers – require a long-term commitment that may not fit hybrid work schedules in the future.

Parents frustrated over childcare center cutting hours, CEO says there was no other choice

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Parents across the state are frustrated after learning Ardent Preschool & Daycare will be cutting hours next week.

The notice went out to families on Thursday, April 21, 2022, stating the new hours would go into affect on Monday.

Their hours of operation and childcare will end at 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Up until this point, Ardent was open until 6:00 p.m. A 15% cut in hours and starting next month tuition is rising.

Matt Dixon is the father to 19-month-old triplets enrolled at the center. He says after reading the announcement, he and his wife were shocked.

“The idea of giving two business days to reconfigure childcare in the middle of a workday is just — I’m at a loss for words for what you actually call that,” said Dixon.

Finding new childcare solutions is now on the task list for thousands of families across the state. Dixon says the most frustrating part is how last-minute parents were notified.

“The timing on multiple level could not be much worse,” he said. “Couple weeks notice, a month notice, would have been tricky to navigate. This is borderline impossible.”

Dixon says his family is looking into other options like a nanny or babysitter, as well as other childcare operations. Unfortunately, because it’s in the middle of the semester, not many are accepting new children at this time.

“No one saw this coming and no one I’ve interacted with seems to have a great plan on how to deal with this,” said Dixon.

Several parents told WBRC they are searching for answers from John LaBreche, the CEO of Ardent. He spoke exclusively with us on Friday.

“We had to make a tough decision about either changing our hours or having to close out classrooms,” explained LaBreche. “Like picking and choosing which classes are going to be totally closed next week.”

The main reason is because of significant staff shortages and burnout. LaBreche says every location needs five to nine full time staff members right now.

“My corporate team has been covering classrooms, my wife’s been covering classrooms, I’m covering two-year old classrooms. I did that three days last week.”

He says many employees are working well over 40 hours to make up for the lack of staff, causing extreme burnout. LaBreche adds that some days, they are getting upwards of ten employees calling out sick, on top of a limited staff.

Since the announcement, LaBreche says he’s received threats and his staff is dealing with backlash.

“It’s tough,” he said. “People don’t know the context of what you’re trying to do and how much you care because they don’t see the behind-the-scenes of what’s happening. We’re trying to do the best job we can.”

The CEO says the new hours are only temporary until they can hire more people and fully train the limited staff they do have. They plan on reevaluating at the end of July.

He still wants parents and families to know that he understand the frustration, and wishes there was a better solution.

Journey to Al Birmingham How Britain’s proletarian capital turned into a nest of jihadists British law enforcement officers figured out where he came from to London. The tracks led to Birmingham – the “Birmingham Caliphate”, as the press dubbed it, which in recent years has become a Mecca for Muslims throughout Europe. How a working-class city and the former capital of the British socialists turned into a refuge for adherents of Islam – Lenta.

      ru understood.

      Drank a beer

25-year-old Stuart Bailey, a respectable citizen of the United Kingdom, who lives on Hailey Road in Birmingham, whiled away the evening in the company of a friend. Closer to midnight, young people decided to go to the store and buy something to drink. As soon as Stuart opened the door and took a step outside, he immediately recoiled. A black-clad man with a submachine gun in his hands, standing right in front of the door, yelled at him: “Get out, quick!” Friends slammed the doors and rushed to the window.

“There was a crowd of armed police outside. They were all dressed in black and armed with MP5 submachine guns, one had six magazines with cartridges fastened to his leg, ”Baley later shared his impressions with newspapermen.

year-old Khalid Masood killed four people. The investigation led law enforcement officers to Birmingham, where Massoud and his family have been living in recent months.

      Proletarian capital

Birmingham, a city in the west of Central England, was known throughout the world during the industrial revolution as one of the centers of technological progress and the labor movement. The white proletarians of Birmingham, unlike others, were distinguished by their unity and readiness to fight for their rights with employers and the police. In 1832, it was the Birmingham workers, under the threat of the outbreak of civil war, that forced the authorities to make concessions and agree to an electoral reform that allowed the large industrial cities to increase their representation in Parliament. The glory of the patrimony of the rebel workers, the stronghold of the Chartists and Laborites and the nest of industrial innovations accompanied Birmingham in subsequent years.

During the Second World War, the city was heavily bombed, but after the end of the war, a new economic boom began. After the collapse of the empire, a mass of inhabitants of the former colonies poured into Birmingham, mainly from South Asia. The local economy digested everyone and asked for more. The population of the city exceeded one million people, in terms of living standards Birmingham was even ahead of London.

Everything collapsed in the early 1980s. Britain, like the rest of the Western world, was swept by a wave of recession. In the case of Birmingham, it was aggravated by its specialization: in the post-war decades, London politicians, in an effort to boost the economy of other regions, removed light industry enterprises from it, essentially turning it into a single-industry town focused on engineering. When Margaret Thatcher, in the name of saving the national economy, began to close unprofitable industries, more than 100 thousand people were left without work.

Birmingham then responded to London with the famous Handsworth riots: cobblestones, Molotov cocktails and even homemade bombs flew at law enforcement officers. Unlike what was happening in other cities – and protests swept all over Britain at that time – in Birmingham, white, black and Asian youth fought in a single formation with the police.

      European Mecca

But proletarian solidarity is a thing of the past. Over the past decades, the economic face of the city has changed dramatically, and now a key sector in it is the service sector.

      Anti-Muslim demonstration in Birmingham

      Photo: Darren Staples / Reuters

Today Birmingham is a city split into several large communities. According to the latest data, almost 58 percent of the population is white, 27.5 percent is Asian (more than half of them Pakistani), less than 9 percent is black, mostly from the Caribbean. While demographers are predicting an 8 percent population growth for the city by 2021, the white population is declining: Today, more than half of elementary school students are blacks or Asians.

The fastest growing community in the city is Muslim, with one in five Birmingham residents practicing Islam. A few years ago, a Fox News commentator even had to apologize for calling Birmingham “a purely Muslim city where representatives of other religions are barred from entering.

But this error is quite understandable. In the 1990s, refugees from unstable regions, including Somalia, were added to the already large Pakistani and Indian diaspora. In recent years, the Muslim community has been growing rapidly, including due to immigration from other European countries. For many European adherents of Islam, Birmingham has become a new Mecca: in the countries where they live, they are viewed with suspicion after the recent terrorist attacks.

According to one of these migrants, Alicia Firens, a Belgian by birth who converted to Islam with her Chinese husband, over the past six years even tolerant Belgium has turned into a sharply anti-Muslim country. “We were expecting our first child and did not want him to grow up in an atmosphere of hatred,” she says. “Birmingham is much friendlier as long as you stay within your own neighborhood.” Now neophytes will have no problems with raising a child: wearing a veil and breaks for daily prayers are allowed in local public schools, and after school, children will be able to go to additional education madrasas, where they will study the Koran.

Alicia and her husband feel at home in Birmingham: five local areas are almost entirely Muslim, in many others they make up 20 percent of the inhabitants. “I feel safe here,” says one of the residents, 20-year-old Sarah Begum, “the other women around dress the same as me, there are a lot of people with dark skin and Muslims around, and people take care of protecting the area.”

      There will be pogroms

This concern was tested by deeds in August 2011, when riots broke out in England. Starting in the London area of Tottenham, they quickly spread to other cities.

In Birmingham, more than 800 rioters in balaclavas and with pistols, mostly blacks, attacked primarily Muslim neighborhoods. Mutual hatred has been accumulating for a long time – since the gang war of 2005, when immigrants from the Caribbean converged with Pakistani groups in the struggle for the redistribution of the prostitution and drug markets – and finally spilled onto the streets.

      Related materials:

The police tried to restrain the attackers, but they weren’t strong enough: as soon as one street was blocked, the rioters changed their route and passed along another. The crowd broke into Pakistani neighborhoods and engaged in robbery: they broke windows, smashed restaurants, dragged everything that came to hand.

The Muslim community promptly organized detachments of combatants. Soon the first victims appeared – three Pakistanis tried to protect their property, but they were hit by a car – as the investigation showed, the collision was intentional. The city was on the verge of an interracial conflict. “The whole community was armed,” the father of one of the victims, Tariq Jahan, later said. “Young men came to me and said, ‘We want revenge.’”

The situation was saved only by the arrival of additional police forces in the city and personally by Prime Minister David Cameron, who met with community leaders and managed to extinguish passions. But the problem remains unresolved: unemployment in Birmingham is still above 10 percent, and young people – whether blacks or Asians – have nowhere to go but to the streets.

It is there, according to the police, that Muslim youth go through the elementary school of the war for the faith. “Many of the guys have been on drugs for a long time, come from single-parent families, face domestic violence,” says Mohammed Ashfaq, head of a local organization that tries to turn youth away from drugs and extremism. “They get into bad company, and around them the gangsters say: come on, boy, join our gang, you will become a cool, real gangsta jihadi.”

But even children from wealthy families sooner or later receive their portion of Islamist propaganda. This happens most often in educational institutions, where radical preachers freely penetrate. Recently, Birmingham was rocked by a series of scandals when school sermons calling for the killing of infidels leaked onto the Internet. Several Islamist teachers have been fired, but how many are left?

Stopover on the way of jihad

More recently, Coventry Road – one of the busiest streets and, at the same time, the residence of the most conservative Birmingham Islamists – was plied by buses of the Al-Muhajiroon organization, headed by preacher Anjem Chhoudary. Prayers blared from the speakers, and members of the organization handed out leaflets to passers-by calling for them to convert to Islam and help the jihad fighters.

Now Chhoudari is in prison, Al-Muhajirun has been declared a terrorist organization by the British court, but the network spread by the Islamists in Birmingham has not disappeared. In Muslim quarters, where the police do not dare to meddle, it is easy to get lost, and in radical mosques they will always give shelter to those who follow the path of jihad. Fellow believers are not given out here. Many well-known personalities have passed through the underground terrorist network, which the police say exists in Birmingham. Among them are the organizers of the attacks in Paris and Brussels – Abdelhamid Abaud and Mohammed Abrini, the closest friend of Jihadi John Junaid Hussein, and many others who later went to war in Syria, Iraq and Somalia in the name of pure Islam.

“Jihadists act like mafiosi,” says David Videsette, a former detective with a background in counterterrorism. “They distribute extremist literature through shops, arrange meetings with radical mullahs, and collect money through mosques. Many people still think that terrorism is related to religion, although it has long since become a means of making money.”

Birmingham Moslems argue that a few black sheep cannot judge the whole flock. Mass actions were held in the city condemning the attack on Westminster, the local community collected a round sum for the victims and the families of the victims. The Birmingham Faith Leaders’ Group even issued a special statement saying: “We ask everyone to understand that these actions are the work of one person, not the entire community. Every day in Birmingham we see examples of creative, productive and mutually beneficial relationships between people of different religions. We must come together, especially in these difficult times.”

However, Muslim activists themselves acknowledge that there is a problem. The law enforcement officers who carried out the raids in Birmingham were lucky that most of the suspects lived in areas with a mixed population. It would hardly be possible to find ends in purely Muslim ones. “These are places where people can just hide and do what they want,” admits Ashfaq. “If a militant decides to hide, for example, in the Muslim district of Sparkbook, no one will give him away.”

Wilmar Barrios: Children should develop through football what God has given them.

The Russian Football Union summed up the results of the third All-Russian festival “Football at school”, which took place in 78 regions of the country until June 10th. Within three months, students of kindergartens and secondary schools held more than two thousand contests, competitions, quizzes and relay races.

According to the results of the festival, winners were determined in each district in three categories: among kindergartens, schools with less than and more than 300 students.

Three best educational organizations in Russia have become known : kindergarten No. 36 from Tyumen, Gusarevskaya secondary school of the Azov region (Rostov region) and secondary school No. 10 (Lipetsk region). The winners of the Football at School festival will be awarded sets of football equipment by the RFU.

Kindergartens and schools have been identified that will receive additional encouragement (balls 3-5 numbers, sports capes, nets, bags for balls, diplomas): 34 preschool organizations, 13 schools with less than 300 children and 24 schools with more than 300 students. All participants were awarded with electronic certificates. The best school in St. Petersburg remains GBOU school No. 14 in the Nevsky district with a rating of 97.4378.

I will share my own experience. We participate in the festival for the third time, we are happy to perform interesting, live competitions. The format of the festival is most convenient for educational institutions: all tasks can be completed on the basis of your own school or kindergarten. After each event, photo and video reports are uploaded to the sports portal of the Russian movement of schoolchildren sport. rdsh.rf.

The list of proposed events includes: a culinary competition “Football Gourmet”, a collective visit to a football match, football relay races, a complex of activities “Dad, Mom and I are a football family”, a mini-festival for girls “We are in the game”, a cool cup, a competition of commentators and videos “Our football club”, the challenge “Football at home” and other tasks.

In general, everything is objective, only the evaluation criterion for photo and video reports raises questions: some schools can find a professional photographer, cameraman and editor, others are content with their own resources and, of course, lose in quality. In my opinion, representatives of the RFU should try to personally come to the finalists as kind expert examiners. Then there will be much fewer questions from the educational institutions and preschool educational institutions that did not win prizes.

It is still difficult to motivate those who directly implement the project on the ground, that is, school teachers. A physical education teacher has an average of six lessons a day, and not everyone has enough strength, emotions and, most importantly, the desire to devote time to extra-curricular football activities for the same money. This problem is also relevant for St. Petersburg: out of 800 schools, lyceums and gymnasiums, only… 24.

Unequivocal respect to the RFU for involving former famous football players in the Football at School project. In particular, at the end of June, more than seven hundred children from schools in the Krasnodar Territory played football with the ambassadors of the Russian Football Union – Vladimir Bystrov, Ruslan Pimenov, Maxim Buznikin and Alexei Igonin. Boys and girls from 7 to 15 years old trained and participated in master classes, received prizes and souvenirs from the RFU.

      – A wonderful initiative of the RFU, not only children, but we also received positive emotions, – ex-captain of Zenit Alexey Igonin shares his impressions of the master class, – introducing children to football begins with interest, and it, interest, is activated through communication with people who played for the Russian team. Not all of them will become professional football players, but they will love the game and support their teams for sure. This is the essence of the Football at School project.

Recall that the project works in five areas: football lessons, football sections in schools, training and support for teachers, the All-Russian Festival “Football at School”, school football league. Last academic year, the festival was held in 58 subjects of the RFU with the participation of 824 educational institutions. Geographic expansion is evident.

“Children who have chosen football as their sport must believe that everything is possible,” Zenit midfielder Wilmar Barrios advises young football players, “this is the first and most important thing. Of course, you need to train hard, keep in mind that there is someone better than you: smarter, physically stronger, taller – it doesn’t matter. However, you must perfectly understand your capabilities, appreciate and develop what God has given you.

Brandon Sanderson on book publishing houses: publishers, Amazon, Kickstarter (March 16, 2022)

Article written on March 21 16:41

After Brandon’s Kickstarter campaign to release four secret projects in 2023 broke all possible records (at the time of the translation of the post, more than $ 31 million was raised against a stated goal of $ 1 million), Brandon decided to talk about modern book publishing system and speculate about possible prospects in this area.

Hello friends! The last two weeks have been, without exaggeration, stormy. After the record-breaking Kickstarter campaign for my books, there was a lot of discussion and I thought it would be nice if I could answer some of the questions you send me.

Let’s start with the simple ones, and then I’ll explain in more detail why I started this project in this way.

How are you? What do you do?

I’m fine. Just great. In doing so, I was a little behind my schedule: as I finished editing the last book of The Twoborn, I knew I wouldn’t be able to start the fifth book of The Stormlight Archive in January. There was a lot of work with The Twoborn, and then you needed to take a break, so the first two weeks of the year went in a relaxed mode (really relaxed, no secret projects).

I really wanted to finish The Two-Borns early, at the beginning of February, but it didn’t work out. The good news is that I now devote all my time to the Archive. Bad news: I didn’t have time to edit the last book in the Skybound series, so it’s likely to come out next year not in the spring, but in the summer. I won’t sit down for it until I’ve worked at least a month on the Archive and handed over the first secret project. Fortunately, there is a collection of stories about the link “Heaven” and for now you can read it.

One way or another, the delay in the fifth “Archive” is about a month. It’s not too scary, I can just press on and finish the book before the end of the year. As a last resort, it will be released not in the fall of 2023, but in the spring of 2024. This book completes the arc and needs more work. If its release has to be pushed back, it won’t be because of secret projects, but because of the extra time spent on the last book of The Two Born or the fifth Archive itself. I will keep you informed. To sweeten the pill, the latest book of The Two-Born has grown by 25,000 words since the editing.

    Introduction

It seems to me, or has the year passed like one day? I can’t believe it’s already December and I’m writing yet another Sanderson Summary. However, after 2020, which dragged on for ages, you should probably be grateful. On the other hand, soon to begin the daunting task of writing the fifth book of the Stormlight Archive, the final book of the first arc.

Despite everything, I remain deeply grateful to all of you who continue to follow me along this path. It’s been a weird year for me for a lot of reasons. I’ll explain everything sooner or later, but for now, it’s time for the Sanderson Results, an annual report in which I go into detail about everything I’m working on.

Attention: the report, as usual, is quite long. It will be on my website all year long. The previous report is also available there (and here is its translation from the Booktran team).

Let’s finish with the introduction and get down to business!

Welcome to my annual report. I will talk about recently published projects, about those that are being prepared for release, and about those that are hanging.

    Introduction

The year, of course, turned out to be the same. Dan Carlin likes to quote an old Chinese proverb on his podcast: “God forbid you live in an era of change.” I think I now understand better why this phrase is commonly used as a curse rather than a blessing.

I like change: it’s good for me as a writer. However, I prefer that this does not come at the expense of the many people affected this year by the coronavirus. I hope there will be a vaccine available to everyone soon.

If there’s one good thing about this whole pandemic thing, it’s that I spent the whole year at home and didn’t go on tour, which had a positive effect on my productivity. I have been able to work on many of the behind-the-scenes projects that will see the light in the future, as well as finish all the projects scheduled for this year on time. It is hoped that my stories will bring you at least a little relief in this “era of change.”

In case you missed it, a book came out this year that I call the original The Way of Kings Prime. This is a very old version of the first volume of the Stormlight Archive that I wrote in 2002 and decided not to publish. In 2009-2010 I rewrote it from scratch, and as a result, the Way of Kings appeared in the form in which you know it. If you’ve read The Rhythm of War and don’t want to part with Cosmer (although not according to canon), read the old version, it’s very different.

Anyway, I’m going to do what I always do – look ahead and keep telling stories.

    All the best,

    Brandon Sanderson

As per tradition, while we are preparing for the release of the fourth volume of the Stormlight Archive – Rhythm of War, Kanis Arne’s beta readers are also offering us remember what we know about the Uncreated.

Hello, hello! Welcome back to Roshar! In this article, it’s time to talk about the Uncreated – Slivers of Strife, wreaking havoc. What is known about them?

Warning: You will encounter spoilers for all volumes of the Stormlight Archive already published and occasional references to Brandon’s Q&A with fans. We will try to avoid spoilers for other series, or at least mark them, if there is no other way.

    Early references

The first mention of the Uncreated (under this name) occurs in the epigraph to chapter 45 of The Way of Kings, as an excerpt from Yasna’s study of the bringers of emptiness:

    quotation

“Yelig-nar, nicknamed Wind-Blight, was one of those who could speak like a human, although his voice was often echoed by the cries of devoured people.”

The Uncreated were clearly folk art. Interestingly, most of them were not known as independent individuals, but as embodiments of various types of destruction. This quote – from Traxil, line 33 – is considered a source of paramount importance, but I doubt that it is reliable.

Strange as it may seem, in the last book these “folk art” things have broken a lot of firewood (and Jasna has probably changed her mind about them). It is worth noting that Jasnah knew that Yelig-nar was the name of the Uncreated, but this is understandable: we know many names from mythology and legends, although we do not believe that these are real people or entities.

There are a few more mentions of individual Uncreated in the epigraphs of The Way of Kings, but these are only crumbs of information, so we’ll save them for later.

In “Words of Radiance” listeners speak of the Uncreated as a reality, and a reality that must be avoided without fail. Eshonai worries about his people, but sees the only alternative is to “play with things that are best left untouched – with things that can turn the eyes of the Uncreated on us.” (As it turned out, her fears were fully justified). Other references to the Uncreated in hearers are associated with a form called “smokeform”, but it is not clear what this connection is.

Another folklore reference is found in chapter 45, “Middle Holiday,” when the young Shallan is taken aback by the sight of a talking chicken and fears that it will “bring the eyes of the Uncreated.” (Is it clear that the talking animal must be a void-bringer? But Shallan lives a very secluded life and is too naive. In the same scene, she is horrified at the thought that there will be five hundred (!!!) people at the fair.)

Epigraphs only from the Diagram, and more precisely in chapter 81 of the Words of Radiance, we see in a human source the mention of the Uncreated as a real phenomenon:

    quote

“The Uncreated are an aberration, a curiosity, a puzzle, perhaps not worth wasting time on. It’s hard not to think about them. They are charming. Many are unintelligent. Like human emotion spren, but much more insidious. I still think that some of them are capable of thinking.

What do we know about the countries and peoples of Roshara-Review of Megan Cannes in the dimension of the Academic Archive of Buresvet –4

Traditionally, while we are preparing for the release of the fourth volume of the Stormlight Archive, Kanrider of War is being offered by Kanrider us to remember what we know about the countries and peoples of Roshar.

Hello fans! Welcome back to Roshar. Today we will talk about countries and peoples. Ever wondered what the difference is between Iri and Rira? Or where is Big Hexie? Forward!

Warning: You will encounter spoilers for all previously published volumes of The Stormlight Archive and Face Dancer, and occasional references to Brandon’s Q&A with fans. I’ll try to avoid spoilers for other series, or at least flag them if there’s no other way.

Modern day Roshar is a vast and diverse continent with many peoples, nations, and ways of life that are only hinted at in the books. Before diving into all this, let’s turn to history. Roshar is most influenced by the Age of Heralds and the ten Silver Kingdoms.

    Ten Silver Kingdoms

During the Devastation, Roshar was divided into the so-called Silver Kingdoms: Iri, Shin-Kak-Nish, Sela-Tales, Aimia, Macabakam, Valhav, Rishir, Aletela, Nathanathan and Talat. They are no more, but they greatly influenced the cultures and peoples that arose from their ruins. For example, Makabakam has broken up into more than ten nations, but they all ethnically identify themselves as Makabaki. To the west, Alethkar and Ya Keved occupy most of the territory that belonged to their predecessors, Aletela and Walhav. Perhaps, since the Age of Heralds, only Shinovar has retained the same borders and people.

In our time, also known as the Age of Solitude, the ten Silver Kingdoms have split into more than 26 countries and regions. We will talk about each, although some are almost unknown.

To give the article some structure, let’s start with one of the most important political aspects on Roshar – the mutual distrust between the Macabaki peoples in the west and the Vorin nations in the east. In The Oathbringer, the standoff is waning as Dalinar’s diplomatic efforts unite the human lands against the forces of Enmity. However, it is still a cornerstone in terms of politics and culture. Traditionally, the Vorin kingdoms perceived the Makabaks as pagans and barbarians, and the Makabaks, in turn, resented the aggressiveness of the Vorin culture, embodied in the genocide perpetrated by the conqueror Sadeas Suncreator.

12 Amazing Dogs to Remember on National Dog Day

Dogs can do some pretty amazing things. Just look at your own, who comes when you call, sits when you say so, and knows enough to only chew up your last-season footwear. History is filled with tales (and tails) of highly accomplished canines—all of whom are worth remembering on National Dog Day (August 26th). Here are 12 of them.

    1. Bud

Mary Louise Blanchert, Public Domain, Wikimedia Commons

In 1903, Dr. Horatio Nelson set out to become the first man to drive across America in a newfangled invention known as the automobile. Though Sewall K. Crocker was Nelson’s official co-driver, a goggle-wearing pit bull named Bud also came along for the ride, making him the first dog to drive across America.

    2. and 3. Balto and Togo

Balto may score the bigger headlines—not to mention a famous statue in Central Park—but the famous sled dog who helped deliver a shipment of antitoxins to Nome, Alaska during a 1925 diphtheria outbreak had a lot of help. Particularly from Togo, whose own team of fellow sled dogs traveled twice the distance of Balto’s and crossed the 674-mile trek’s most treacherous parts. But as it was Balto’s team who finished the final leg of the record-setting five-and-a-half-day journey, he’s the one who grabbed most of the glory.

    4. Sergeant Stubby

    Wikimedia Commons

The military title in this pit bull mix’s name isn’t just there to be cute; it’s a well-earned honor. During World War I, the former stray served with the 102nd Infantry alongside his owner, John Robert Conroy, who had smuggled him into France when he was deployed. But Stubby’s keen sense of smell and hearing proved to be quite valuable to the unit; he would alert the men to incoming gas attacks and helped rescue many wounded soldiers. But it was by sniffing out a German spy that Stubby earned the rank of sergeant.

    5. Swansea Jack

Swansea Jack is a legend in Wales, where he lived with his owner, William Thomas, near the River Tawe. It’s here that the black retriever’s superhero reputation began when he jumped into the river to save a drowning boy. A few weeks later, he did it again. And then again. And again. All told, it’s believed that Jack saved a total of 27 people during his lifetime.

    6. Rags

    Wikimedia Commons

Rags is another pooch who saw his fair share of combat during World War I, where he accompanied the 1st Infantry. Private James Donovan found the terrier mix as a stray in Paris, and brought him back to his unit as a mascot and carrier dog, who would traverse dangerous grounds to deliver notes to the front lines. Rags and Donovan returned to America after a gas attack, which Donovan did not survive. Rags, however, went on to become a bit of an A-list name and was buried with military honors.

    7. Bobbie the Wonderdog

Also known as Silverton Bobbie, this Scotch Collie-English Shepherd mix gained worldwide fame in 1923 when he walked from Indiana to Oregon—a full 2551 miles—to reunite with his owner, six months after getting lost in the Hoosier State while on a family road trip. In 1924, a silent film—The Call of the West—was made about Bobbie; the pup played himself.

    8. Rolf

Dog owners are never shy about showing off their pooch’s smarts, and Paula Moekel was no exception. Her Airedale terrier Rolf became famous around the world for his ability to “speak” by tapping out letters with his paws. She also claimed that he was a great mathematician, poet, theologian, and philosopher. Veracity of those assertions aside, what is known is that it’s because of Rolf that the Nazis attempted to train an army of super-smart talking dogs.

    9. Laika

    Keystone/Getty Images

Yuri Gagarin may have been the first human being to journey into space, but that historical 1961 feat would not have been possible without Laika, the terrier-turned-cosmonaut who was literally picked up off the street in Moscow to become the first living being to orbit the Earth. And while she has enjoyed several decades of fame for her accomplishment, Laika did not survive the mission so never had the chance to enjoy her celebrity status. Though Soviet officials said she survived for at least a few days, she actually died less than two hours into her mission due to overheating and stress.

    10. Robot

Sure, it was probably just a case of pure luck. But in 1940, a quartet of teenagers and one dog in Dordogne, France set off to try and find a mythical tunnel that was said to run under the Vézère River. Instead, what Robot sniffed out (literally) were some of the world’s most significant Paleolithic cave paintings, which had not been seen by human eyes in thousands of years.

    11. Hachikō

    Wikimedia Commons

That dogs are a loyal species isn’t breaking news, but the depths of some dogs’ fidelity is worth special mention. Especially when it comes to Hachiko, the Akita who made a habit of greeting his owner, University of Tokyo professor Hidesaburo Ueno, at the end of each work day at Shibuya Station. But in 1925, Ueno passed away suddenly from a brain hemorrhage and never returned home. Still, Hachiko waited. Every day. For the next nine years.

    12. Chips

If you’ve ever seen the 1990 Disney movie Chips, the War Dog, you know the story of this brave German Shepherd-Collie-Husky mix, who served with the 3rd Infantry in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany during World War II. Trained as a sentry dog, Chips’s quick reflexes made him a valuable asset in defending his unit. He once forced four gunners to surrender to U.S. troops and, on the same day he injured his scalp and sustained powder burns, helped his men capture 10 Italian prisoners. Though his Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and Purple Heart were eventually revoked due to an Army rule on animal commendations, Chips remains one of the world’s most decorated war dogs.

Based on an article that first appeared at

    The Drake Center

Do you think you know everything there is to know about canines? Think again! Check out these 23 interesting facts you may have never heard:

    1. Dogs have a sense of time. It’s been proven that they know the difference between an hour and five. If conditioned to, they can predict future events, such as regular walk time.

    2. Your dog is as smart as a two-year-old! Ever wonder why children around this age seem to have a special bond with the family dog? It could be because they speak the same language, roughly 250 words, and gestures in fact.

    3. A study at UCSD claims that your dog can genuinely get jealous when they see you display affection for another creature.

    4. The United States has the highest pet dog population in the world. Approximately 75.8 million in fact.

    5. Seeing eye dogs are trained to do their “business” on command. This way their owner can clean it up a bit easier. Some of the popular commands are “get busy” and “go time.”

    6. Man’s best friend? Petting a dog and gazing into their eyes releases oxytocin (i. e the “love hormone”) not only for you but for them as well.

    7. The Saluki is the world’s oldest dog breed. They appear in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 2100 B.C.

    8. Dachshunds were originally bred to fight badgers.

    9. Dogs that have been spayed or neutered live longer than dogs who are intact.

    10. More than half of all U.S presidents have owned dogs.

    11. Stray dogs in Russia have learned how to ride the complex subway system and get off at specific stops in search of food.

    12. Your dog can smell your feelings. In fact, your dog’s sense of smell is approximately 100,000 times better than yours. So it shouldn’t be shocking that they can, in fact, smell things such as fear. When a human is fearful, they perspire, and a dog is easily able to pick up on this change.

    13. Dogs have wet noses because it helps to absorb scent chemicals.

    14. Dogs can be trained to detect cancer and other diseases in humans. Cancerous cells release different metabolic waste products than healthy cells in the human body. Dogs may even be able to sniff out cancer cells simply through smelling a someone’s breath.

    15. Do you have a dog that experiences separation anxiety? Try leaving some clothing with him that you’ve worn. It’s been proven that the scent you leave behind on your clothes can help ease your dog’s separation anxiety.

    16. When your dog is carefully choosing the perfect place to do his business, it is because they prefer to go poop in alignment with the Earth’s magnetic field.

    17. Have you ever wondered why your dog curls up in a ball when they sleep? It’s actually an age-old instinct to keep themselves warm and to protect vital organs while they sleep.

    18. Your dog can help get you a date! One study showed that a man’s chances of getting a girl’s phone number went from 10% to 33%, just by having a dog with them. In the study, a staggering 66% of men and women would not date someone who didn’t like pets.

    19. Labradors have been the most popular breed in the United States for the last 26 years.

    20. There are approximately 600 million dogs in the world. It is estimated that nearly 400M of those dogs are strays.

    21. Scientists believe that the world’s first known dog lived 31,700 years ago. This prehistoric dog resembled a large Siberian Husky.

    22. Former Michael Vick dogs, Sox and Hector, are certified therapy dogs. They now spend their days cheering up people at hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.

    23. Spiked collars were originally fashioned in ancient Greece to protect dogs’ throats from wolf attacks.

    Dogs

Such different dogs: 10 most-very breeds

People tamed dogs 10-15 thousand years ago. This is one of the first wild animals that became a companion and friend to man. I can’t even believe that a domestic dog simply descended from a wolf or a jackal: now you can’t find any breeds! Here is a selection of the very best.

    The smallest: Chihuahua

Chihuahua, a breed originally from Mexico (it is named after one of the Mexican states). The smallest dog of this breed in the world – Millie’s Miracle from Puerto Rico – weighs only 544 grams. Chihuahua is a companion dog that is very attached to the owner and guards him. By the way, the barking of such a baby is very sonorous. nine0003

    The most powerful: English Mastiff

The weight of the “boys” of this breed can reach up to 110 kg. And the growth at the withers is up to 90 cm. The record holder from the Guinness Book of Records is the mastiff Aikam Zorba, who weighed almost 156 kg. Despite their physical strength, these dogs are very peaceful and calm.

    The oldest: Saluki

It is also called Persian greyhound or gazelle dog. Of course, this is a hunter for fast-footed animals like hares, foxes, gazelles. At first, it was widespread in the Middle East, on the territory of ancient Mesopotamia, Phoenicia. Images of a dog are found on ancient pottery, which dates back to 3500 BC. Genetic studies also confirm that this breed is probably the most ancient of the existing ones. nine0003

Most Musical: New Guinea Singing Dog

The word “pet” doesn’t really fit these independent creatures. You will see them not on the site, but. more like a zoo. This is a rather rare species, discovered in the middle of the 20th century in New Guinea. These dogs can howl, howl, chirp, “sing” – hence the name.

With the most unusual color: Catahoula Leopard Dog

Originally from the USA, the symbol of the state of Louisiana. It is interesting that these dogs not only have wool, but even the iris in the eyes is spotted! nine0003

    Smartest: Border Collie

Shepherd dog, bred on the border of England and Scotland, which shows amazing ability to learn: the ability to grasp new commands on the fly (and this is confirmed by research from the University of British Columbia). It is also one of the most sporty breeds that perform well in frisbee, freestyle, and agility competitions.

    Fastest: Greyhound

English Greyhound is the champion among dogs in speed. 60 km / h – and this is not the limit, but only for short distances. This is an old breed, well known since the Middle Ages: even then English aristocrats hunted with such dogs. nine0003

    With the finest scent: Bloodhound

Breed bred in Belgium. In addition to a super sense of smell, such dogs have another wonderful quality – diligence. They were actively used as bloodhounds, because they are able to follow the trail for a long, long time. And now such dogs “work” in the police and customs service.

    Quietest: Basenji

Congolese bush dog or Congo terrier cannot bark. If she is worried about something, she makes sounds resembling grumbling or rumbling. One of the legends tells that in ancient times the leader of a dog pack accidentally found out about the secret that people kept. He and his pack promised never to tell anyone the human secret. And they fell silent. But silence does not mean passivity at all, it is an energetic and cheerful dog

With the most unusual “layout”: Bergamasco shepherd

Italian shepherd dog. Her pride is long flat “dreadlocks”, which themselves are formed from long wool. But with such a hairstyle, temperature drops are not at all terrible, and wolves will not be able to cause harm: pigtails protect reliably.

    did not know

It would seem, well, what new can be learned about an animal that man tamed tens of thousands of years ago? But dogs are truly unique creatures, and scientists are only now beginning to reveal their most amazing abilities. nine0003

What else did we not know about dogs, their appearance, habits and character?

    Contents of the article

    Dogs can “read” faces

Studies have shown that the dog is the only creature in the animal kingdom that can read emotions from a human face. If you suddenly notice that the dog is staring at you, know that perhaps at this moment he is trying to determine your emotional state by facial expression. nine0003

    Dogs have color vision

Contrary to popular belief, dogs can see colors – but certainly not to the same extent as humans.

    Dogs “feel” diseases

Recently, scientists from a clinic in the German city of Schillerhei conducted an interesting study. His results led them to conclude that dogs smell certain organic compounds that indicate the development of lung cancer. The discovery attracted the attention of scientists around the world – after all, such abilities of animals can potentially be used for the early diagnosis of cancer. nine0003

Dogs do not tolerate secondhand smoke

A number of studies have confirmed that second-hand smoke inhalation can lead to severe respiratory disease, allergies, nose or lung cancer in dogs. When the smoke from your cigarette hits a dog’s nose, he experiences the same torment as a child who is next to a smoking person.

There are no two identical dog noses in the world

Just as it is impossible to find two people with the same fingerprints, you are unlikely to find two dogs with the same nose prints. The drawing on it is unique. nine0003

    Dogs should not eat chocolate

Chocolate contains the toxic substance theobromine. In the human body, it is metabolized and excreted without harm. Dogs have a much slower metabolism. Only 100-150 mg of theobromine per kilogram of body weight is enough for a dog to become seriously poisoned.

    Small dogs live longer

Statistically, small breed dogs have a longer lifespan. Thus, animals weighing less than 9kg live on average for about 11 years, while dogs weighing more than 40 kg barely live to eight.

Dogs have a unique thermoregulation system

Just like us, dogs can get cold or hot. But at the same time, their body is able to independently prevent overheating with the help of rapid breathing with the tongue sticking out. A person from such hyperventilation is likely to become ill.

The power of a dog is in the sense of smell

An animal has up to 300 million olfactory receptors in its nose (compare: a human has only about 6 million of them). This means that a dog smells 50 times more than we do. nine0003

    Dogs can inherit property

In some countries, including the United States, a dog can become the owner’s legal heir upon death. Some owners become so attached to four-legged friends that they leave unimaginable amounts of money for them. So, the German shepherd named Gunther the Third became the richest heir. According to her will, she inherited about $80 million.

    Dogs can hide personal information

Have you seen how sometimes dogs flatten their tails at the sight of their compatriots? From the side it may seem that in this way the animal expresses fear. But this is not so. With its tail, the dog covers the odorous glands located at the anus, by which it can be identified. She does not want someone outside to find out her personal information. You don’t show your passport to anyone, do you?

    Dogs can be jealous

Research has shown that dogs can indeed be jealous.

    Annotation:

The Young Years of King Henry IV is rightfully considered the best historical and psychological novel in the history of the genre. The book, in which the detailed authenticity of realities, side by side with the daring author’s fiction, opens up to the reader a picture of the turbulent 16th century – which, obviously, it was for contemporaries! Before you is the “way up” of the legendary monarch, who became one of the most significant personalities in the history of France! ..

“WE ARE GIVEN YOUNG YEARS FOR FUN…”

“Man is the measure of all things.
And how convenient it is – after all, he is either a giant or a dwarf.

    S.-E. Letz

For the second year, the pen clings to the paper, as if there were rough knots on it.

From the very day that “Stroybat” appeared on the stage of the Maly Drama Theater, or rather, a performance based on “Stroybat” by V. Kaledin, named in the poster by the line “Gaudeamus”, which is the title above these lines. Played by students of the course of L. Dodin and young actors of his theater.

Heroes – shaved recruits – ran out onto the stage and, one by one, fell into the holes of the cesspools, fell into the shit. Dodin always strove for global plots and images: Home, Brothers and Sisters were not titles – symbols, categories with which he correlated a person, and the spatial muse of E. Kochergin generalized the World in his performances with images of wooden horses – the soul of the House; the walls that unite and divide the Pekshin brotherhood, the walls are pillars and dead ends. The charred forest (which is “chopped – chips fly”) became a metaphor for a burnt life, the Fatherland that burned down in the fire of a seven-decade-long civil war. The barrack in “Stars in the Morning Sky” by the artist A. Poray-Koshits also tried to appear as our common Soviet barrack, from which we, isolated, are not given access to life, to the holiday. Each time, the person in the performance had to relate himself to this world – alive or burned. Each time the image of the performance was the image of Life, and life took the form of a performance. Life is like a House, like a Barrack, like … A cesspool.

Dodin and Porai-Koshits also found a global image for the performance based on “Stroybat”, consistently and vigorously played out in many scenes.

… matchboxes with analyzes of soldier feces flew out of the holes, and the song sounded deafening: “I, you, he, she” – together the whole country! Dodin has always loved shock and metaphor. The climax of “Stroybat” sounded strong.

…the phrase about the danger for a drunken soldier to choke on “vomit masses” was procrastinated and exaggerated for a long time. Dodin used to know how to use, to start the physiology of the audience, to connect reflexes. This is where it really started to get nauseous.

… are standing waist-deep in shit, soldiers of the Stroybat are sticking out of the holes in the closets. It sounds mockingly jubilant: “America! America! America! Here is your American dream for you, eat and compare where you are sitting and where the coveted superpower is America. Dodin knows better: he has just come from there, he is generally more likely there than here, he, thank God, managed to get out of what, in his opinion, we are all sitting in (“I, you, he, she …”), and he obviously sees more clearly how insignificant and disgusting our position and condition is: we’ll choke on “vomit masses of vomit”!

The tablet foresaw one thing for sure: it was impossible not to fall into shit. Underfoot is not the earth – a common toilet. Step stepped – stuck.

“We are looking for salt, we are looking for the pain of this land…” – they sang in the student “Brothers and Sisters”. The search ended with the “Stroybat”, a useful domestic mineral, hidden until now by the bark of this unfortunate land, splashed up like a fountain.

The play was performed by students. This is already the fifth Dodinsk course (if we count the Tyuzov studio and the courses of A. I. Katsman, where he was the second teacher). Everyone had their young years, their own “Gaudeamus”, inspired by the Teacher and sung according to his creative will. And everyone had their young years given for fun and spent under the guidance of the Teacher.

Here he is, still a student himself and, it seems, with a glued-on beard, playing in the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and holding out his hand … no, not yet to students, classmates, actors. He is a director who gives joy and experiences it.

At Stroibat, for the first time, I clearly understood how much young years mean in fate. They really are given for fun, no matter what era they fall on. This knowledge will then increase grief.

Fun reigned in the performances of the Youth Theater in the late 60s. Under the sparkling, joyful parodies of “Our Circus” and “Our Chukovsky”, young L. Dodin (a look at the photograph from the play “Mashenka”, where he is Senya: like this – “… and a boyish jacket, and friends are standing around”) passed ” School of Korogodsky.

Pedagogy is a public matter, there are no secrets here. I know this as a teacher. “School of Korogodsky” is a term that has had a bitter aftertaste for many years and has a definite meaning precisely as a term. The “School of Korogodsky” was a verified, built-up totalitarian system that made it possible to quickly achieve a certain artistic result and destroyed a person. At first, from the first year, students kept diaries, which they were obliged to confide in everything secret: from bed to opinions about comrades, including impressions of art. The guys called them “snitches” (at least the course that studied in parallel with me called it that). They suffered, but they wrote (and some did not suffer). The diaries were handed over to the Teacher, and he wanted to – took note (which is also a lot), wanted – betrayed it to public discussion. There could be no secrets, theater is a collective art! “Diary torture” persisted for a long time, then smoothly flowing for many into the habit of continuing to confide secrets to the teacher, forgetting about the inviolability of the individual, and into a good command of other intra-theatrical epistolary genres – “snitches”. In the process of constant play, permanent acting.

Then, in a friendly crowd, young actors made up the living mass of performances on the principles of universal interchangeability. Individuality was still sometimes needed, personality – rarely. It was a theatrical construction battalion of children’s joy. From the performances, it was clear how personal characteristics were “cut off” from year to year, how creative training and drill became just drill, and at creative meetings the falsity of intonations struck: an iron grip was always guessed behind the unctuous, sweet words of Korogodsky. True, these were already the 70s, the time, the victim of which the current journalistic criticism represents Z. L. Korogodsky. This was already the period when, having passed the “school of Korogodsky”, L. Dodin was rejected by the Youth Theater. Because he was a personality, because he staged an independent play “Our people – let’s settle” and became from an apprentice – a director, a competitor. Totalitarian systems get rid of them.

    “Vivat, Academia! Vivat, professor!

There are two logics: either a person who has suffered and remembers his sufferings will try not to repeat them (humbled, having received power, will not humiliate, experienced oppression, will not oppress others), or a person who has suffered will vent his past on near and far (thrown away from the theater, then he will not think about his unemployed colleagues, who for a long time considered that he was not given enough, he would not give it to the next. Dostoevsky’s variant). L. Dodin, a man who, by creative necessity, was called to remember his sufferings, inscribed the words “Man”, “Student” on the banners. Well, and others, no less wonderful. Those words that were the law in the “Zon school”, studied at the institute, were the norm of the “Katsman school” (having experienced long-term dependence on Tovstonogov, he was not afraid to reach out to the gifted, original, unemployed Dodin).

Educational “Brothers and Sisters”: jubilation, pride in such human and acting wealth – cannot be contained! And fear: will it not come true, will it be lost? I wanted to hold my fists and repeat the name of their other performance: “If only, if only…”

Then “Oh, those stars!” On each other’s heads (do not walk in skirts, it is inconvenient to climb over those sitting in them!) Heat, stuffiness, delight. And again: “If only…”

When L. Dodin collected them in the new “Brothers and Sisters”, it turned out that the fists were not holding in vain. It was early spring. As in Pekashin, when the heroes shout into the spring heights:

    “Live-e-eat!”

I remember how the pen ran on paper – I love them! When now in a faded, obsolete “Lord of the Flies” they take the stage in succession, the first emotion is I love them! But the pen does not run now, for the second year it clings to paper.

Once, in the student “Brothers and Sisters” (and a little further in time), Dodin taught young actors to believe. Unconditionally. life. Art. And the Teacher. He even wrote why he needed students: here is a different degree of trust, faith. They played with him, forgetting themselves, because they believed (although an actor should not forget himself, a person should not). Once, later, describing the “adult” “Brothers and Sisters”, I (I apologize for self-quoting) wrote in connection with Ganichev: “When a person believes, he is more and more imbued with the consciousness of the correctness of his faith (this is known from philosophy), accepting it as the only possible way to live. Time lived by faith.” And Small Drama.

Pupils of L. Dodin in the performance “Young years are given to us for fun …”

Life plays some kind of cruel joke with us when what was done, staged and written earlier suddenly returns to us with the opposite sign.

“Don’t think, it will be better,” Ganichev inspired Lukashin, sitting on the fence. It was as if this idea of Ganichev was embodied in “Stroybat” – not to think, but to execute, the idea of a team imbued with the correctness of its faith, trained and impersonal. In Lord of the Flies, Jack fed his army, but forced them to smear their faces with gray dust, erasing the seal of personality from them. Stroibat, which exposes the Soviet system in a plot, has its own paradoxical, extra-plot plot, it aesthetically embodied what the MDT has been fighting for so long. This is a very Soviet performance: impersonal guys performing stage tasks with faith and enthusiasm.

Where are you, beloved, in black uniforms, but all different, glowing with the return light of the hall in the finale of “Brothers and Sisters”: “Our way to Pekashino… Water splashes under our oars…”? The path of Stroybat is different: Nice, Strasbourg, Lyon, Geneva…

Where are you, who sang in the finale: “Let’s breathe in a drop of sunshine – and we’ll start over again…”? “If we are sitting in shit, then the country needs feces!” – say the construction battalion workers. I would like to clarify: not so much the country, but the world. Domestic sewage was immediately taken out for viewing in different countries – here it is! “Young years are given to us for fun,” the current residents of Dodin sing, playing forty “Stroybats” a month in Paris. Young years are really given for fun.
The first course was the “brothers and sisters” course.

The second one is brothers and sisters, but… the Karamazovs. Already devoid of that commonality. Star course.

The third one had no name.

The present – under what name will he go down in history?

The “Stroybat” course is a course for directors, that is, those who must be initially personally free.
Who knows, maybe if Dodin hadn’t tried to interact with Christianity for so long and stubbornly in his performances (“Live and Remember”, “A Gentle One”, “The Brothers Karamazov”), if he hadn’t written holy words about love on his banners, charity, brotherhood, sisterhood, teacher and students, the House, if the ethical and aesthetic idea of his theater were not programmatically located on all this, – who knows, maybe today there would be other points of reference, MDT would calmly stand among other theaters, his soul would not ache for him, and his drama would not be a common story of abused love.

Ours – to this theater, which didn’t give a damn about us (how could it be otherwise, because we are sitting in God knows what – “I, you, he, she …”)
Theirs – to a life in which they first caught the smells of bread, birch brooms, wet spring wind, meat and vodka, and now they feel only “vomit of vomit” or do not smell life at all – as in “Demons”. In “Brothers and Sisters” vodka was sniffed with a sleeve, seized with meat, in “Stroybat” the hero of S. L. Suryshev sniffs it with a box with feces analysis.

This is a story of some special love and drama between teacher and students. How, loving S. Vlasov, could you keep him without roles for ten years, with only Yegorsha? A. N. Fomenko – with one Varvara? N. Akimov without new roles – several seasons, Sklyar, Kozyrev, Zakharyev … Yes, everyone! And for five years to exhaust your beloved students and already mature, wonderful actors by playing tired performances into which the oxygen of new roles did not penetrate, and therefore life. In the performance-concert “Returned Pages” there was only one plot: the drama of unclaimed opportunities. They, one after another, came out with reading numbers, and we, sitting in the hall, counted the lost roles … Those that they could play with Dodin and other directors, and which they will no longer play. Time is, of course, money. But time – and roles.

The life of V. Osipchuk turned out to be framed by two unplayed roles from Dostoevsky: Alyosha in The Brothers Karamazov and Stavrogin from Possessed. Who knows, if he had played Alyosha, and not Snegirev (which he did excellently), would his life have tilted towards Stavrogin? In each role, he walked along the thin border between light and darkness, any push – and unbalanced nature could respond to both. It seemed that he knew only the boundary line between good and evil, but neither good nor evil were known to him. In this spiritual, spiritual, painful brittleness, Dodin and his performances needed him. To take him to the safe side of the street meant to interrupt the creative torture of the “difficult theater”, where everything had to be suffered, meant to doubt the creative religion, the faith that Dodin inspired in his students. This religion denied Mozartism, and when Osipchuk once tried to play Mozart in a video film, it came out sluggish and hard. Spiritual turmoil is a sin, cultivating spiritual turmoil, lingering and at the same time being carried away by Christianity, here, in MDT, something was clearly confused. The prince of darkness pushed V. Osipchuk from the border strip into darkness. From the black auditorium, where on hot summer days they spent their young years wandering around Dostoevsky, to the black study of non-existence.

    U. I. Ivanov did not have painful brittleness. Of the two leaders of the “brothers and sisters” course, S. Bekhterev and I. Ivanova, the second, as Dodin later wrote, was distinguished by indestructible mental health and was generally too healthy for a dramatic artist. And although already in the educational, and then in the adult Brothers and Sisters, Ivanov played Peter Zhitov remarkably, his victoriousness by its very nature contradicted the idea of creativity as a constant and obligatory torment. I don’t know what happened and how, but in the small role of “Lord of the Flies” he appeared with sore eyes. As if someone cut this natural monolith, split it. The crack, the fracture, and the inner drama that settled in this crevice required a creative outlet, but Ivanov had been waiting for a dramatic role for more than five years – before Lebyadkin. Apparently, the thirst to share his heartache was so strong that, having entered the role of Nikolai in “Stars in the Morning Sky”, he, with his inherent strength, jerked the meaning, forcing the performance to submit to the drama of his hero. Nikolam howled like a wolf, gazing wistfully somewhere, and this was much more serious than the experiences of Anna, Clara and Co.

    Teacher, raise a student.

“Live-e-eat!” Maybe it’s not worth dramatizing, and they are happy? “When the war is over, we’ll eat our fill!” – as they sang in “Brothers and Sisters”. The world has opened its arms to them – and that’s a lot. Only…

    S. Yursky told at one of the concerts how during the four months of work in Paris he fell in love with this same Paris and how difficult and at the same time natural to return from there to here. Because that life was not created by us, it does not belong to us, we have an internal basis only on what we have completed, here.

    What has been built?

In MDT, L. Dodin began to build the House. An old, purely Russian idea, unique in its romantic message. Especially when there are students, that is, a theatrical family. Whether he, who passed F. Abramov, was connected with the fundamental creative ideas of E. Kochergin, did he not know how much this House was being built on a log until wooden horses crowned it – a symbol of the House, its soul. According to my subjective feeling, he managed to lay only the first crown (like the one in the set design “Live and Remember”). Well, two crowns. He laid them so beautifully and firmly that everyone admired, began to invite builders to different countries – to show their skills and their suffering in a difficult task. Time passed, the world admired the “art of the first crown”, but the construction of the House itself did not move from this. Its logs blackened and grew old in a damp climate, the tree of life, planted, as usual, at the beginning of construction, has grown over the years so that it is unlikely that the walls will ever catch up with it. The masters, as before, were able to do one thing – to lay the first crowns.

    On tour.

The picture of the started and abandoned construction cannot cause enthusiasm, it is sad. Of course, I want to forget it, and while there is an opportunity, go again somewhere where the comfort of hotels and comfort in general allow you to forget about the unfinished House.

… wooden skates soar in the “House” – its soul, when the House itself is not there … A great idea floats in the air, not finding support in the solid masonry of logs …

“But as you travel, you return home …” not pleasant. Apparently, peat is burning, like in the summer when the action of the “Old Man” takes place. The smoke of the Fatherland is disgusting. There is a “Stroybat”. Before “Brothers and Sisters” they went “to nature”, concentrated, searched for the roots of true well-being. Before The Possessed, for three years they rode around the world with tours – the premiere was played not with us, but in Braunschweig.

For many years Dodin assured us that life is common, pain is common. And then somehow gradually, from “Lord of the Flies” to “Stars in the Morning Sky”, alienating her, in “Stroybat” he distinctly said: “Yours.” Your life, your dirt, not mine.

    What is it? Deception? Exchange?

“Stroybat” gave rise to a feeling of disgust, precisely because – everything is “not his”. But he also gave birth to another plot – the plot of compassion. Deprived of this emotion in principle, the performance made Dodin feel sorry for him. I wanted to say: “Poor man, how do you live?”

A complete and tragic chain was taking shape.

Even in the best performances of Dodin (in “Brothers and Sisters” and beyond), the task of creating an artistic person was not set. The actor sought to identify the character with himself and acted with his own, and not artistic energy. The actors were young, inspired, individualities and characters merged into one powerful vital stream. “Performances of life”, they were performances of the power that lived in the performers and their leader. But Dodin neglected the artistic, inviolable man. Then it was the turn of the human actor. Touched.

“We’ll breathe in a drop of the sun, and we’ll start over again,” they sang in the student Brothers and Sisters. “Let’s start over again” turned into a process of endless rehearsal based on universal interchangeability. So far, all the students of the course went through one role in turn – this was a learning process, necessary, important, productive. But when not schoolchildren, but masters pass through one role, at the risk of losing it any day, this means either the Teacher’s ignorance of the capabilities of his students and associates, or complete disregard for their psyche, nerves, personality, finally. There are no irreplaceable! Very Soviet slogan. It is insulting for a professional to constantly participate in a competition.

    — Osipchuk, Sklyar, Zakharyev, Semak… Who is Stavrogin? It will be visible there.

The man-actor became a nobody, a lever, the theater became a collective construction battalion. World tours and newspaper headlines like “The Dodin Theater is the best theater in the world” (as in sports) relaxed, created (by contrast) a feeling of tired disgust for this life.

A person, from the point of view of a construction battalion, is nothing. They, commanders, sitting waist-deep in shit, treat a person in this way. But it turns out that Dodin also considers it nothing. This means that he equates himself with these commanders. It cannot fail to understand what equalizes. And, therefore, he lives in a deep tragic complex, because to live, realizing that you are standing waist-deep. .. is uncomfortable and unnatural. In “Stroybat” he seems to be mocking himself, giving the opposite sign to what was in his performances before.

The performance is full of self-citations. Maybe they arose because Stroybat was obviously molded in a hasty master’s hand. It is all the more striking what intonation Dodin involuntarily gave to himself – the former, the past.

… wearily plopped down – feet first – Pekshin’s “women” in the sowing. They sat ugly, but they sang like that and their faces were like that – look at it! The disgusting soldier girls in the Stroybat are now sitting in the same positions and also singing a Russian song. But then the man seemed to Dodin a giant, and now he appears to be a pygmy, an element of “vomit mass”.

…Jack’s galloping army was terrifying. The construction battalion jumping in the same way does not inspire horror.

… they grabbed Lizka by the braid and pulled like a goat. Touching and funny. Now soldier Milman is pulling a random girl by her wet, soapy hair. Feelings are not expected. Muddy water drips onto her bare back and the stage board.

… washed linen – bras, underpants – is gray and also causes a feeling of disgust.

Everything that used to have human value is now an element of a cesspool. But how can a person live who feels this way about himself and his past life?

In Brothers and Sisters, he was worried about the person. I don’t know if he loved him (I want to believe – yes), but he sympathized – for sure.
In Lord of the Flies, humanity was interested. “What is the dirtiest thing in the world? – Soul”. Compassion ran out, but there was interest.
In “Stars in the Morning Sky” compassion was declared, but the driving force behind the performance was just hatred of the ranks. The insincerity of the “Stars” came precisely from this split: driven by hatred, he declared speculative compassion.

In Stroibat, hatred has degenerated into irritation and disgust. To man, to humanity, to the system – to this life. But Life! Man drowned in “vomit masses of vomit”, became an inanimate part of the inanimate general, or rather a box of sewage, just like the World – a cesspool. But if everything – both life and a person – is a pile of physiological waste, then this is already a matter of concern not for art, but for a sanitary and epidemiological station.

There are no people and life in “Demons” at all. Dodin is consistent. Carriers of ideas walk around the stage, their faces are grey. The matter of the spectacle is dead, therefore it is non-aggressive (the dead cannot be aggressive). The energy of the performance, which used to be fed by the individual energies of the actors, is now at zero. They are tired, as if sick, dried up by dialogues with the demon, with whom, apparently, everything has been clarified for a long time, and therefore these dialogues are boring. The thread-like pulse of the performance is occasionally interrupted by bursts of feverish energy from Ivanov, Kuryshev, Vlasov.

    Thanksgiving Story for Kids

Thanksgiving Day is approaching. This year, the day, which is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November, falls on November 25. On this day, pageants are held on thanksgiving at schools, children don headdresses colored with craft-store feathers and share tables with classmates wearing black construction paper hats. Kids wish each other and love the feeling of togetherness!

Do you know that there is an interesting history behind the Thanksgiving celebrations? Let us look into the history & dive into the Thanksgiving story.

The real Thanksgiving story behind the celebrations

At the beginning of the 17th century, a group of English Protestants, called Puritans (aka Pilgrims), wanted to break away from the Church of England. The group moved to Holland but suffered financial problems there.

In 1620, they received funds from English merchants and a group of 101 people, including women and children. These funds were left in a small ship called the Mayflower in September to settle at a different place near present-day New York City.

After a tiring journey of 66 days, the group dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination, at the mouth of the Hudson River.

One month later, the Puritans sailed through Massachusetts Bay and began the work of setting up a village at Plymouth. However, the visitors spent their first winter on the ship.

Historians say that half of the settlers died of cold and a contagious disease on the ship. In March, the remaining settlers moved to the nearby coastal area, which was then inhabited by many Native American tribes.

One day, Samoset, a leader of the local Abenaki people, and Tisquantum (also known as Squanto) visited the settlers. Squanto, who belonged to the local Wampanoag community, knew English. Squanto taught the Puritans, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. After several meetings, in March 1621, a formal agreement was made between the native people and the settlers, also mentioned in the history books as colonists, for mutual cooperation.

    The first thanksgiving ever!

In November 1621, after the colonists’ first successful corn harvest, their Governor William Bradford planned a celebratory feast. Four settlers were also sent to hunt for the feast. When Wampanoag people heard the gunshots, they thought the colonists might be coming for war and alerted their leader, Massasoit. Massasoit then left with around 90 men for the English settlement.

After reaching there, Massasoit discovered that the English were only hunting for the harvest celebration. The Native Americans then joined the settlers in their celebrations. Massasoit also sent some of his own men for hunting.

A grand feast was organized, in which the English and native men, women, and children ate together. The meal consisted of deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat. There were no sweet dishes as the Mayflower’s sugar supply had finished by then. The celebrations went on for three days. People of the two communities also sang and danced together.

Declaration of Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday

After the November 1621 celebratory feast at Plymouth, Puritans held their second Thanksgiving celebration in 1623, following a year of drought. During the American Revolution (1765-1791), the Continental Congress called for one or more days of thanksgiving a year.

In 1789, George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the US national government. He also called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy ending of the country’s independence war. His successors John Adams and James Madison also followed the trend.

In 1817, New York became the first of several US states to officially adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday.

In 1827, the famous journalist, Sarah Josepha Hale, launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to government representatives. Finally, at the height of the Civil War in 1863, Abraham Lincoln scheduled Thanksgiving Day for the final Thursday in November.

In 1939, Franklin D Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week during the Great Depression. However, Roosevelt’s plan faced strong opposition and two years later he had to reluctantly shift the day to the fourth Thursday in November.

    Current

traditions and rituals of Thanksgiving day

In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance. It now revolves around cooking and sharing food with family and friends.

    Source

According to the National Turkey Federation, about 90 percent of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common activity on this day and communities often offer free dinners for the poor. Parades are taken out in cities and towns across the United States.

    Controversies around Thanksgiving

There are apprehensions whether the feast at Plymouth really constituted the first Thanksgiving in the US, as some historians have recorded other ceremonies of thanks among European settlers in North America.

For instance, the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilé invited members of the local Timucua tribe to a dinner in Florida’s St Augustine in 1565 after the safe arrival of his crew.

Apart from that, some Native Americans have issues with how the Thanksgiving story is presented to the world.

In their view, the traditional narrative paints a deceptive picture of the relations between the Puritans and the Wampanoag people. They believe it overlooks the bloody history of conflict between Native Americans and European settlers, which resulted in the death of thousands of people. It is said that the peace between the Native Americans and settlers lasted for around 50 years.

Now, the Wampanoag people do not take part in the Thanksgiving Day celebrations, as they see it as a “reminder of betrayal and bloodshed”. Since 1970, every year people of the community assemble at the top of Cole’s Hill, which overlooks Plymouth Rock, and observe the day as “National Day of Mourning.” Some people say it’s time to reevaluate the meaning and celebration of the holiday.

    A welcome holiday

    Source

Irrespective of the controversy surrounding the day, there is no doubt that it is many people’s favorite holiday. From the amazing turkey dinner to the cozy gathering of family and friends, the day provides the fun of Christmas, minus the stress of decorating and gift-giving. It provides us an opportunity for a stress-free holiday focused on food and fun.

Many people like the day for its welcoming spirit and sense of community. Thanksgiving is a holiday that welcomes all, regardless of religious beliefs or cultural traditions. It also provides time to reflect on our lives, appreciate what we have, who we are, and where we are right now.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How did Thanksgiving get its name?

In November 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast. The feast was organized by the colonists to thank the native people for their cooperation. Hence, it is acknowledged as Thanksgiving day today.

When was Thanksgiving declared a public holiday?

On September 28, 1789, the First Federal Congress in the United States, passed a resolution seeking the president’s nod to declare Thanksgiving a public holiday.
A few days later, George Washington, the first President of the US, proclaimed November 26 (Thursday) as a “Day of Public Thanksgiving”. However, it was President Abraham Lincoln, who in 1863 proclaimed Thanksgiving a public holiday to be commemorated every year on the last Thursday of November.

Why did the date of Thanksgiving change every year?

In 1939, the last year of the Great Depression, the last Thursday of November was on the last day of the month. US President Franklin D Roosevelt became concerned that the shortened Christmas shopping season might dampen economic recovery.
He, therefore, moved Thanksgiving to the second to last Thursday of November. Some 32 states consequently issued similar proclamations, but 16 states refused to accept the change. As a result, for two years two days were celebrated as Thanksgiving.
To end the confusion, on October 6, 1941, Congress set last Thursday in November as a fixed date for the holiday.

The Myths of the Thanksgiving Story and the Lasting Damage They Imbue | History

Chief Ousamequin shares a peace pipe with Plymouth Governor John Carver.
    California State Library

In Thanksgiving pageants held at schools across the United States, children don headdresses colored with craft-store feathers and share tables with classmates wearing black construction paper hats. It’s a tradition that pulls on a history passed down through the generations of what happened in Plymouth: local Native Americans welcomed the courageous, pioneering pilgrims to a celebratory feast.

But, as David Silverman writes in his new book This Land Is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving, much of that story is a myth riddled with historical inaccuracies. Beyond that, Silverman argues that the telling and retelling of these falsehoods is deeply harmful to the Wampanoag Indians whose lives and society were forever damaged after the English arrived in Plymouth.

Silverman’s book focuses on the Wampanoags. When the pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620, the sachem (chief) Ousamequin offered the new arrivals an entente, primarily as a way to protect the Wampanoags against their rivals, the Narragansetts. For 50 years, the alliance was tested by colonial land expansion, the spread of disease, and the exploitation of resources on Wampanoag land. Then, tensions ignited into war. Known as King Philip’s War (or the Great Narragansett War), the conflict devastated the Wampanoags and forever shifted the balance of power in favor of European arrivals. Wampanoags today remember the Pilgrims’ entry to their homeland as a day of deep mourning, rather than a moment of giving thanks.

We spoke with Silverman, a historian at George Washington University, about his research and the argument he makes in his book.

This Land Is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving

Ahead of the 400th anniversary of the first Thanksgiving, a new look at the Plymouth colony’s founding events, told for the first time with Wampanoag people at the heart of the story.

    The Myth of Thanksgiving

How did you become interested in this story?

I’ve had a great many conversations with Wampanoag people, in which they talk about how burdensome Thanksgiving is for them, particularly for their kids. Wampanoag adults have memories of being a kid during Thanksgiving season, sitting in school, feeling invisible and having to wade through the nonsense that teachers were shoveling their way. They felt like their people’s history as they understood it was being misrepresented. They felt that not only their classes, but society in general was making light of historical trauma which weighs around their neck like a millstone. Those stories really resonated with me.

    What is the Thanksgiving myth?

The myth is that friendly Indians, unidentified by tribe, welcome the Pilgrims to America, teach them how to live in this new place, sit down to dinner with them and then disappear. They hand off America to white people so they can create a great nation dedicated to liberty, opportunity and Christianity for the rest of the world to profit. That’s the story—it’s about Native people conceding to colonialism. It’s bloodless and in many ways an extension of the ideology of Manifest Destiny.

What are the most poignant inaccuracies in this story?

One is that history doesn’t begin for Native people until Europeans arrive. People had been in the Americas for least 12,000 years and according to some Native traditions, since the beginning of time. And having history start with the English is a way of dismissing all that. The second is that the arrival of the Mayflower is some kind of first-contact episode. It’s not. Wampanoags had a century of contact with Europeans–it was bloody and it involved slave raiding by Europeans. At least two and maybe more Wampanoags, when the Pilgrims arrived, spoke English, had already been to Europe and back and knew the very organizers of the Pilgrims’ venture.

Most poignantly, using a shared dinner as a symbol for colonialism really has it backward. No question about it, Wampanoag leader Ousamequin reached out to the English at Plymouth and wanted an alliance with them. But it’s not because he was innately friendly. It’s because his people have been decimated by an epidemic disease, and Ousamequin sees the English as an opportunity to fend off his tribal rebels. That’s not the stuff of Thanksgiving pageants. The Thanksgiving myth doesn’t address the deterioration of this relationship culminating in one of the most horrific colonial Indian wars on record, King Philip’s War, and also doesn’t address Wampanoag survival and adaptation over the centuries, which is why they’re still here, despite the odds.

    The Thanksgiving Feast

How did the Great Dinner become the focal point of the modern Thanksgiving holiday?

For quite a long time, English people had been celebrating Thanksgivings that didn’t involve feasting—they involved fasting and prayer and supplication to God. In 1769, a group of pilgrim descendants who lived in Plymouth felt like their cultural authority was slipping away as New England became less relevant within the colonies and the early republic, and wanted to boost tourism. So, they started to plant the seeds of this idea that the pilgrims were the fathers of America.

What really made it the story is that a publication mentioning that dinner published by the Rev. Alexander Young included a footnote that said, “This was the first Thanksgiving, the great festival of New England.” People picked up on this footnote. The idea became pretty widely accepted, and Abraham Lincoln declared it a holiday during the Civil War to foster unity.

It gained purchase in the late 19th century, when there was an enormous amount of anxiety and agitation over immigration. The white Protestant stock of the United States was widely unhappy about the influx of European Catholics and Jews, and wanted to assert its cultural authority over these newcomers. How better to do that than to create this national founding myth around the Pilgrims and the Indians inviting them to take over the land?

This mythmaking was also impacted by the racial politics of the late 19th century. The Indian Wars were coming to a close and that was an opportune time to have Indians included in a national founding myth. You couldn’t have done that when people were reading newspaper accounts on a regular basis of atrocious violence between white Americans and Native people in the West. What’s more, during Reconstruction, that Thanksgiving myth allowed New Englanders to create this idea that bloodless colonialism in their region was the origin of the country, having nothing to do with the Indian Wars and slavery. Americans could feel good about their colonial past without having to confront the really dark characteristics of it.

Can you explain the discrepancies in English and Wampanoag conceptions of property?

It’s incorrect as is widely assumed that native people had no sense of property. They didn’t have private property, but they had community property, and they certainly understood where their people’s land started and where it ended. And so, when Europeans come to the Americas and they buy land from the Wampanoags, the Wampanoags initially assume the English are buying into Wampanoag country, not that they’re buying Wampanoag country out from under their feet.

Imagine a flotilla of Wampanoag canoes crosses the Atlantic and goes to England, and then the Wampanoags buy land from the English there. Has that land now passed out of the jurisdiction of England and become the Wampanoags’? No, that’s ridiculous. But that’s precisely what the English were assuming on this side of the Atlantic. Part of what King Philip’s War was about is Wampanoag people saying, ‘Enough, you’re not going to turn us into a landless, subjugated people.

Did all Wampanoags want to enter into alliance with the English?

From the very beginning, a sizable number of Wampanoags disagreed with Ousamequin’s decision to reach out to [the English] and tried to undermine the alliance. Ousamequin puts down multiple plots to wipe out the colony and unseat him. Some Wampanoags say, ‘Let’s make an alliance with the Narragansetts and get rid of these English. They’ve been raiding our coast for decades, enslaving our people, carrying them off to unknown fates and they can’t be trusted.’ Some Wampanoags believed they caused epidemics and there were prophecies that this would be the end of the People.

When the English arrived, they entered a multilateral Indian political world in which the internal politics of the Wampanoag tribe and the intertribal politics of the Wampanoag tribe were paramount. To the degree the Wampanoags dealt with the English, it was to adjust the power dynamics of Indian country.

You write that during King Philip’s War, efforts to unify different tribes against the settlers weren’t always successful. Why was that?

The politics of Indian country are more important to native people than their differences with colonists. There were no ‘Indians’ when the English arrived. Native people didn’t conceive of themselves as Indians—that’s an identity that they have had to learn through their shared struggles with colleagues. And it takes a long time—they have been here for 12,000 plus years, and there are a lot of differences between them. Their focus is on their own people, not on the shared interests of Indians and very often, what’s in the best interest of their own people is cutting deals with colonial powers with an eye towards combating their native rivals.

How does your telling of these events differ from other existing scholarship?

The main difference has to do with King Philip’s War. The question is whether native people, led by Metacomet, or Philip as the English call him, were plotting a multi-tribal uprising against the English. I think they were. Some of my historian colleagues think it’s a figment of paranoid English imagination. But I see a lot of warning signals building during the 1660s and 70s from Englishmen who lived cheek-by-jowl with Wampanoag people and were terrified of what they were seeing on the ground. I see a pattern of political meetings between native leaders who hated each other. And yet, they were getting together over and over and over again—it all adds up to me.

There’s this tendency to see the English as the devils in all of this. I don’t think there’s any question they’re in the wrong, but it doesn’t let them off the hook to say that native people wouldn’t take it anymore. And regardless of that, I think the evidence shows that native people had reached their limit and recognize that if they didn’t rise up immediately, they were going to become landless subordinates to English authority.

This is about as contrary to the Thanksgiving myth that one can get. That’s the story we should be teaching our kids. They should be learning about why native people reached that point, rather than this nonsense that native people willingly handed off their country to the invaders. It does damage to how our native countrymen and women feel as part of this country, it makes white Americans a lot less reflective about where their privilege comes from, and it makes us a lot less critical as a country when it comes to interrogating the rationales that leaders will marshal to act aggressively against foreign others. If we’re taught to cut through colonial rhetoric we’ll be better positioned to cut through modern colonial and imperial rhetoric.

90,000 Thanksgiving Day in the USA. | Bilingual Child

    Category:English holidays

Traditionally Thanksgiving Day in the USA is celebrated every year on the last Thursday of November – this is the day of praise to the Almighty for the bread and food that he sends.

In this article, we will find out where this tradition came from and, together with our children, we will learn a Thanksgiving song in English.

This holiday can truly be called the most American, as it is inextricably linked with the history of the formation of the American people and culture . The fact is that in 1620, a ship with settlers from England landed on the coast of America near the city of Plymouth. The settlers organized a settlement there – this is how, in fact, the history of the American people began, as we know it now (before that, only Indians lived in America).

The settlers hoped to live a happy and free life in the new land. But they had a hard time. The first winter brought cold, famine and disease. Hundreds of them did not live to see the spring. When spring came, it became clear that you need to start taking care of what they will eat next winter.

Local Indians came to help. They showed how to cultivate the land and, importantly, they opened to the newly minted Americans such a satisfying product as a turkey. All summer the pilgrims grew crops and turkeys, and when autumn came and the crop was harvested, it was decided to organize a holiday in gratitude to God and the locals for their help and salvation from a hungry life.

It was exactly one year after the arrival of the English colonists in New England in November. Since then, this holiday, called Thanksgiving Day, has been celebrated in the United States in November, and turkeys are considered the symbol of the holiday. They are eaten, songs are sung about them, and one of them is publicly pardoned every year by the President of the United States at the Presidential Turkey Pardon ceremony in the White House garden (they say, by presidential decree, one turkey annually avoids the fate of being eaten).

And about the turkey. I suggest you sing this Thanksgiving song in English with your child:

The symbol of the holiday is Plymouth Rock, a rocky place where the colonists allegedly landed in 1620. In this video, the stone itself tells the story of English settlers in a simple and accessible language. Be sure to watch it with your child and tell them the story of Thanksgiving in the USA!

History and traditions of the most family holiday in the USA

    32443 Life and culture abroad

    Thanksgiving
Day, or Thanksgiving Day, is an American public holiday that
celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday of November. Celebration in 2017
falls on November 23rd. Let’s talk a little about the history and traditions of the main
family holiday, dearly loved by all residents of the United States.

    Thanksgiving History

The Thanksgiving story begins in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. It was there that the pilgrims, who arrived on the North American continent on the ship Mayflower, founded the first English colony in the New World.

There were 102 people on board, but half of them did not survive the winter: the first settlers reached the shore in November, which met them with cold, hunger and disease. With the advent of spring, the surviving settlers began to farm and hunt. The Indians taught them to grow corn and other crops common in North American latitudes.

The result of the joint labors of the pilgrims and the Indians was an unexpectedly rich harvest, harvested in the fall of 1621. The founding fathers were Puritans and had differences with the then dominant Anglican Church in England. It was in search of religious freedom and in the hope of fulfilling the dream of their own church that they set off on the long voyage on the Mayflower. After all the hardships they endured, the harvest became an almost divine blessing for them. And as a token of gratitude to the Lord, they arranged a feast.

The Indians were also invited to the celebration, which lasted three days, who helped the settlers survive the cold and settle in new conditions. Native Americans brought four turkeys to the table. It was this joint meal of the pilgrims with the Indians that became the first Thanksgiving Day.

For a long time, the celebration was popular, but in 1789, by decree of George Washington, Thanksgiving Day acquires national status and is scheduled for November 26th. Subsequently, the official date of the celebration has repeatedly become the subject of controversy. Finally at 19In 1941, a bill was passed in the United States, according to which Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

Family dinner as the main Thanksgiving tradition

Despite the fact that centuries later the holiday has lost some of its original religious meaning, many Americans today attend church services dedicated to Thanksgiving Day. The main tradition is a solemn family dinner, which is held in the house of the eldest family member.

We’ve all watched American movies and know that the “star” of the Thanksgiving holiday table is the baked turkey. She and the pumpkin pie are the culinary symbols of the holiday. Thanksgiving staples also include baked yams (sweet potatoes), mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry and whipped flower sauces, and breadcrumbs turkey filling.

Today, the variety of treats for a celebration depends on the imagination and capabilities of the hostess, however, all recipes, as a rule, include products that were on the table of the founding fathers 400 years ago: poultry, bread, corn, pumpkin, sweet potato, green beans, apples. Before receiving guests, the house is often decorated with bouquets of chrysanthemums and autumn leaves, bunches of spikelets and branches with berries.

Thanksgiving is the most important family holiday for Americans. People put aside all important things to gather in their father’s house and dine with their relatives. Before the meal, family members take turns saying words of gratitude for the gifts on the table, for the blessings of life, and also for the joy of a family meeting.

    Thanksgiving Day Parades

Another tradition of the holiday is street parades. Participants dress up as pilgrims and Indians, and on one of the platforms there will definitely be a big bright turkey. The largest parade has been held since 1927 years in New York by Macy’s department store chain. The procession usually runs from Central Park to the entrance to Macy’s between 7th Avenue and Broadway. The parade is known for huge inflatable figures of heroes from American cartoons and comics and brilliant performances of Broadway theater actors. Broadcasts of the Macy’s parade on television annually gather more than 500 million viewers at the screens.

    2020-2021

Pursuant to Florida Department of Education (FDOE) Emergency Order No. 2021-EO-02, school districts and charter school governing boards were provided the flexibility to opt in to have their school grade or school improvement rating officially recorded and reported for all statutory purposes. In order to be eligible to apply for a school grade, a school must have tested 90 percent or more of its eligible students in the 2020-21 academic year. Schools that did not opt in, or did not meet eligibility requirements, did not receive a school grade or school improvement rating for the 2020-21 school year. Additionally, in April 2021, the U.S. Department of Education approved Florida’s Amended ESSA Waiver Request for Report Card requirements related to certain assessments and accountability for the 2020-21 school year.

Florida School Grades Far Exceed Expectations

Data shows Florida’s schools performed much better than expected due to policies that kept schools open and kept students in the classroom

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.Today, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) released school grades for the 2021-2022 academic year, which show that schools statewide exceeded expectations. The 2021-2022 school grades mark the first full school grade data release since 2019 due to the lack of assessments in the 2019-2020 school year and the opt-in nature of the 2020-2021 school grades. FDOE applauds the hard work of Florida’s students, parents, teachers and school leaders as their collective efforts to support student achievement resulted in school grades that defied conventional wisdom and established a foundation for further closing achievement gaps.

    Key Highlights:

    • Fifty-three schools exited the School Improvement Support list in 2022.
    • 100% of schools graded F in 2019 improved their grades in 2022, including one that earned a B and six that earned a C.
    • 84% of schools graded D and F in 2019 improved their grades in 2022.
    • Overall, elementary schools had the largest increase in the percentage of schools increasing their grade with 20% (351) of elementary schools improving one or more letter grade.
    • 469 schools increased their grade in 2022, while 825 schools maintained an A grade and 348 schools maintained a B grade compared to 2019.

“From Spring 2021 to Spring 2022, it’s clear that our teachers and school leaders used every resource at their disposal to lift Florida’s students well beyond expectations,” said Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. “We know that these results are thanks to policies that kept schools open and kept kids in the classroom, which has been widely recognized as critical to student achievement. Today we can celebrate these incredible results, while continuing to support the schools that are struggling. With Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida will continue to support our great teachers and implement world class instructional and educational supports to uplift Florida’s education family.”

“When I reflect on these school grades and the recent test results, the significant student growth, achievement gap closure and school-wide achievements validate Florida’s approach to get our schools open first and return to normalcy as quickly as possible,” said State Board of Education Chair Tom Grady. “The lesson to learn here is that the tools and supports we provide our teachers and high-quality instruction and curriculum matter and they make a difference in our schools.”

“Less than a year ago, the data showed that nearly 1,500 elementary schools would require additional literacy supports and over 800 schools would likely be placed on the School Improvement Support list,” said State Board of Education Member Monesia T. Brown. “Today, with these results reflecting 168 schools placed on the School Improvement Support list, we are extremely pleased to see our schools rise to the challenge and exceed conventional wisdom.”

    Low-Performing Schools See Major Improvements:

In the 2020-2021 academic school year, Florida schools that tested more than 90% of students were eligible to opt-in to receive a letter grade. However, compared to the grades that schools would have received based on 2020-2021 assessment results, there were several important improvements achieved in the 2021-2022 school year.

    • The number of schools receiving an F was significantly lower than expected.
    • Assuming grades had been issued to all schools in 2019-2020, Florida saw a significant reduction in F schools (from 244 projected schools to 30 schools).
    • The number of “D” or “F” schools has declined 65% since 2015 and the number of “F” schools has declined 85% (30 schools) since 2015 (205 schools).

Florida’s most vulnerable students at our most fragile schools continue to beat the odds by increasing student performance. Schools supported by the Bureau of School Improvement continue to see success year after year. Among the schools receiving state support in 2021-22, 70% (53 schools) improved their performance and exited state support. Of the 25 schools implementing a State Board of Education-approved Turnaround plan, 80% (20 schools) exited Turnaround by earning a 2022 grade of C or higher.
