How Late Can a Period Be? When to Be Concerned

If you don’t have any known condition affecting your menstrual cycle, your period should start within 21 to 35 days of your last period, depending on your normal cycle.

Regular periods can vary. If your regular cycle is 28 days and you still have not had your period on day 29, your period is officially considered late. Likewise, if your regular cycle is 32 days and you still have not menstruated on day 33, this would be late for you.

Either of these two scenarios may technically be late, but should not be an immediate cause for concern. Variations in menses from month to month can occur due to various reasons.

After 6 weeks without bleeding, you can consider your late period a missed period.

Several things can delay your period, from basic lifestyle changes to chronic health conditions. Here’s a look at 10 potential culprits.

Your body’s stress-response system is rooted in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. While you may no longer be running from predators, your body is still hardwired to react as if you were.

When your stress level peaks, your brain tells your endocrine system to flood your body with hormones that switch on your fight-or-flight mode. These hormones suppress functions, including those of your reproductive system, that are not essential to escaping an imminent threat.

If you’re under a lot of stress, your body can stay in fight-or-flight mode, which can make you temporarily stop ovulating. This lack of ovulation, in turn, can delay your period.

Severe changes in body weight can screw with your period’s timing. Extreme increases or decreases in body fat, for example, can lead to a hormonal imbalance that causes your period to come late or stop entirely.

In addition, severe calorie restriction affects the part of your brain that “talks” to your endocrine system and gives instructions for the creation of reproductive hormones. When this communication channel is disrupted, hormones can get out of whack.

A strenuous exercise regimen can also cause missed periods. This is most common in those who train for several hours a day. It happens because, whether intentionally or not, you’re burning way more calories than you’re taking in.

When you burn too many calories, your body doesn’t have enough energy to keep all its systems running. More strenuous workouts can increase hormone release that can affect your menstruation.

Periods typically go back to normal as soon as you lessen training intensity or increase your caloric intake.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a set of symptoms caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. Many people with PCOS do not ovulate regularly.

As a result, your periods may:

  • be lighter or heavier than standard periods
  • arrive at inconsistent times
  • disappear altogether

Other PCOS symptoms can include:

  • excess or coarse facial and body hair
  • acne on the face and body
  • thinning hair
  • weight gain or trouble losing weight
  • dark patches of skin, often on the neck creases, groin, and underneath breasts
  • skin tags in the armpits or neck
  • infertility

Many people love the pill because it makes their periods so regular. However, it can sometimes have the opposite effect, especially during the first few months of use.

Similarly, when you stop taking the pill, it can take a few months for your cycle to get back to normal. As your body returns to its baseline hormone levels, you may miss your period for a few months.

If you’re using another hormonal birth control method, such as an intrauterine device (IUD), implant, or shot, you might completely stop getting your period.

Perimenopause is the time leading up to your menopausal transition. It typically starts in your mid- to late 40s. Perimenopause can last for several years before your period stops completely.

For many, missed periods are the first sign of perimenopause. You may skip a period 1 month and be back on track for the following 3 months. Or, you may skip your period 3 months in a row and find that it arrives unexpectedly, often lighter or heavier than you’re used to.

Early menopause, also known as premature ovarian insufficiency, happens when your ovaries stop working before you turn 40.

When your ovaries are not working the way they should, they stop producing multiple hormones, including estrogen. As your estrogen levels drop to all-time lows, you will begin to experience the symptoms of menopause.

Late or missed periods may be an early sign. You may also experience:

  • hot flashes
  • night sweats
  • trouble sleeping

Other signs of premature ovarian insufficiency include:

  • vaginal dryness
  • trouble getting pregnant
  • decreased sexual desire
  • mood disturbance or mood changes

Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that produces hormones that help regulate many activities in your body, including your menstrual cycle. There are several common thyroid conditions, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can affect your menstrual cycle and cause irregularity, but hyperthyroidism is more likely to cause late or missed periods. Sometimes, your period may disappear for several months.

Other symptoms of a thyroid issue include:

  • heart palpitations
  • appetite changes
  • unexplained weight changes
  • nervousness or anxiety
  • slight hand tremors
  • fatigue
  • changes to your hair
  • trouble sleeping

Certain chronic health problems, especially celiac disease and diabetes, are sometimes associated with menstrual irregularities.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that affects your digestive system. When people with celiac disease eat gluten, their immune system reacts by attacking the lining of the small intestine.

When the small intestine is damaged, it impairs the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food. This can lead to malnourishment, which affects normal hormone production and leads to missed periods and other menstrual irregularities.

Those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes might also experience a missed period in rare cases. This tends to only happen when blood sugar levels are not managed.

If there’s a chance you may be pregnant and your cycles are typically regular, it may be time to take a pregnancy test.

Try to do this about 1 week after your period was supposed to start. Taking a test too early can result in the test being negative even if you’re pregnant, as it’s too early for the test to pick up the pregnancy hormone in the urine.

If your periods are typically irregular, it can be harder to find the right time to take a pregnancy test. You may want to take a few tests over the course of several weeks, or talk with a healthcare professional to be sure.

Other early symptoms of pregnancy to watch for include:

  • tender, painful breasts
  • swollen breasts
  • nausea or vomiting
  • fatigue

Your period is generally considered late if it has not occurred within your cycle’s usual time frame since the start of your last period.

Many things can cause this to happen, from routine lifestyle changes to underlying medical conditions. If your period is regularly late, make an appointment with a healthcare professional to determine the cause.

Why Is My Period Late? – Cleveland Clinic

There’s nothing like a late period to add some extra stress to your life. The most obvious culprit — pregnancy — is one possibility, but there are lots of other reasons.

Ob/Gyn Erin Higgins, MD, explains why late periods happen and what to do if yours is MIA.

What is a “late” period?

Although a few people might have pinpoint predictability with periods, most have a little variation. So if your period is a day or two late, don’t panic.

“Your menstrual cycle is the length of time from day one of your period to day one of your next period,” Dr. Higgins says. “On average, these cycles are 24 to 38 days long.”

That means that a 28-day cycle one month and a 26-day cycle the next month is probably nothing to worry about. Your period might be considered late if:

  • It’s been more than 38 days since your last period.
  • You’re normally really regular, and your period is more than three days late.

Things that delay your period

A missed period is often the first sign of pregnancy, but there are other reasons for lateness, too. Here are some other factors that can delay your monthly flow:

Extreme diet and exercise

A healthy diet and regular exercise can do wonders for your health. But if you overdo it, you might say bye-bye to your periods, at least temporarily.

“Athletes who train really hard or who don’t get enough calories may stop menstruating,” Dr. Higgins says. “It’s the body’s way of telling you that it doesn’t have enough resources to support a pregnancy.”

When your periods stop due to weight loss, diet or exercise, you’re experiencing secondary amenorrhea. This means you previously had periods, but they have stopped. Secondary amenorrhea might happen to you if you:

  • Eat an extreme, calorie-restricted diet.
  • Have an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia.
  • Lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time.
  • Undergo hardcore exercise training, such as for a marathon.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that interferes with the release of an egg (ovulation). When you don’t ovulate, you usually don’t have a period. Many people with PCOS have irregular, late or missing periods. Other symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Acne.
  • Excess facial or body hair.
  • Thinning hair.
  • Weight gain or trouble losing weight.

Doctors diagnose PCOS by checking your symptoms and performing medical tests when needed. Medication and lifestyle changes can help manage the symptoms.

Stress

High levels of stress aren’t just a drain on your mental well-being. They can cause physical symptoms, too — and your periods could be in the line of fire.

“Minor, everyday stress usually won’t affect your period,” Dr. Higgins says. “But big-time stressors interfere with your body’s delicate hormone balance, which can ultimately make your period late.

Some examples of major stress include:

  • Death of a loved one.
  • High school or college exams.
  • Job loss.
  • Major life events, such as a wedding.
Hormonal contraceptives

Hormonal birth control contains progestin or a combination of progestin and estrogen. These hormones stop ovulation and prevent pregnancy. Hormonal contraceptives include:

  • Oral contraceptive (“the pill”): These are pills you take every day.
  • Birth control patch: This is a sticker that you place on your skin and replace each week.
  • Vaginal ring: You place this ring-shaped device in your vagina and change it once a month.
  • Injectable contraceptive: This is a shot your doctor gives you every three months.
  • Hormonal implant: This implant is a tiny rod-shaped device that a doctor places under the skin in your upper arm.
  • Hormonal intrauterine device (IUD): This is a T-shaped device that your doctor places inside your uterus.

Some hormonal birth control causes a false period known as withdrawal bleeding. You’ll have this “period” when you have your hormone-free week with the pill, ring or patch. But if you keep taking the contraceptive without the hormone-free week, you might have some light spotting or no period at all.

“It’s OK to miss a period if you’re taking hormonal contraceptives continuously,” Dr. Higgins says. “But ask your doctor before trying it to be sure it’s safe for you.”

Thyroid conditions

Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck. And it’s one of the many hormonal mechanisms that help dictate your periods. If it’s overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism), you might have a late period.

“Thyroid problems are common, affecting more than 10% of women,” Dr. Higgins says. “They can cause irregular or missing periods and can be mistaken for menopause.”

Youth

It’s the rare young person who starts menstruating and immediately has a 28-day cycle every month. Usually, it takes a few years for things to settle down. That’s because preteens and teens have an immature hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis.

“The HPO axis is the hormonal system that regulates your ovulation and menstrual cycles,” Dr. Higgins says. “It takes a few years for the HPO axis to mature and regulate your periods.”

Typically, your period should even out and become more predictable in your late teens and 20s.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transition from the reproductive years to menopause. This transition might take a year or two, or it could take several years. And during this time, your cycle might be all over the place. It could be 25 days one month and 29 the next.

“Irregular periods during perimenopause are OK,” Dr. Higgins says, “but if your periods are consistently getting heavier or closer together, see your doctor.”

The average age of menopause is 51, so perimenopause often begins in your 40s or 50s. Usually, perimenopause comes with other symptoms, too, such as:

  • Hot flashes.
  • Insomnia.
  • Mood changes.
  • Night sweats.
  • Vaginal dryness.

Don’t ignore a missed period

If you keep track of your periods, you’ll probably know right away if something is amiss. Keep a period diary in your calendar or get an app designed for that purpose. Your period records can provide valuable information for you and your doctor.

“Doctors want to know details about your previous periods so we can determine if there’s an issue,” Dr. Higgins says. “An occasional late period is often the result of something minor, but if you frequently have late or irregular periods, check with your doctor to rule out other health conditions.”

What is considered late under the Labor Code?

Being late for work under the Labor Code is not considered as an independent legal category, so disputes between employees and management regarding dismissal for this violation of labor discipline often end up in court. Are there good reasons for being late for work? What is the relationship between reasons for being late for work and penalties?

Being late for work is a disciplinary violation

The Labor Code of the Russian Federation does not define what being late for work means. There is a general term – violation of discipline.

By signing an employment contract, the employee voluntarily agrees to perform his duties, participating in the production process in accordance with the rules of the employer. The employer establishes the regime of work and rest at the enterprise entrusted to him. Regime is an element of labor rules. Their mandatory observance is labor discipline.

Being late for work is a disciplinary offense associated with the inability to perform one’s duties due to absence from the workplace during working hours.

What counts as being late for work?

Being late for work should be considered absence from the workplace without a good reason for up to 4 hours. A longer absence is already absenteeism.

In addition, an employee may be credited with absenteeism, even if he was absent from a work shift on a schedule lasting less than 4 hours.

Since this is a violation of labor regulations, in order for it to be recognized as such, the employee must be familiar with these rules in advance. If the person who was late before committing the misconduct was not officially (on receipt) familiarized with the internal labor regulations, his absence from the workplace cannot be considered late.

For those who have to visit different objects during the working day (for example, for repairmen, drivers), it should be specified in a special way how to distinguish between the time they perform labor functions, movements between objects and the time spent for private purposes.

Dismissed truants win court cases and are reinstated at work if the labor regulations were not communicated to them or were drawn up formally, as well as in cases where the employer cannot confirm with documents that the violation of the regime actually occurred.

The fact of misconduct must be recorded. Based on the data of the electronic access control system or on the basis of the results of checking the attendance of employees at work, it is necessary to draw up an act that reflects who, when and for how long was late for work. The act is handed over to the violator along with the requirement to provide written explanations on this matter.

The regulations for the employer’s actions when employees commit disciplinary violations are prescribed in the Labor Code (Article 192 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation).

Valid reasons for being late for work

Since there is no definition in the legislation, there is no official list of valid (disrespectful) reasons for being late for work. At the same time, for repeated failure by an employee to fulfill his duties (due to being late, among other things) and in the absence of good reasons, he is threatened with dismissal (clause 5, part 1, article 81 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation).

In this situation, it is necessary to talk about what reasons can objectively be considered valid, based on the customs of business. The excuse for being late can be:

  • illness of the employee himself;
  • illness (death) of close relatives;
  • accident, change (violation) of the transport schedule;
  • difficult weather conditions;
  • other extraordinary circumstances.

Medical certificates, certificates from transport organizations, marks on air and railway tickets, a certificate from the hydrometeorological service or housing department about an accident in the house can serve as confirmation that these events actually took place.

If the employer, after providing such supporting documents, does not require other written explanations from the employee, it can be considered that the reason for the delay is recognized by him as valid and no disciplinary measures will follow.

Reasons for being late for work, for which they are punished

There are no gradations of reasons for the duration of being late, just as there is no concept of “systematic tardiness”. Any delay is considered as a violation of discipline.

In the absence of valid reasons, the management may first reprimand the employee, reprimand him, and, if the offense is repeated, dismiss him (Article 192 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation). Dismissal is also possible with a single absence from the workplace for more than 4 hours.

In this regard, a person who is late 3 times by 5 minutes is formally in a more disadvantageous position than someone who is late 1 time by 3 hours. The first has repeatedly committed a misconduct, and for this he can be fired, and the second, despite the fact that he was absent from work longer, will only receive a remark or reprimand, because he did not cross the 4-hour limit established by law.

However, this does not mean that the employer can apply sanctions indiscriminately.

If a dismissed employee goes to court in search of justice, the employer will have to provide evidence of the severity of the deed.

Good afternoon!
According to Article 75.1 of the Penal Code of the Russian Federation, the territorial body of the penitentiary system no later than 10 days from the date of receipt of a copy of the verdict (determination, decision) of the court gives the person sentenced to imprisonment with serving the sentence in a colony-settlement an order to send him to the place of serving the sentence and ensures his direction to the colony-settlement. In the specified instruction, taking into account the time required for travel, the period during which the convicted person must arrive at the place of serving the sentence is established. The procedure for sending convicts to a colony-settlement is determined by the federal executive body, which performs the functions of developing and implementing state policy and legal regulation in the field of execution of criminal penalties.
The convict goes to the colony-settlement at the expense of the state on his own. Payment for travel, provision of food or money for the duration of travel are made by the territorial body of the penitentiary system in the manner established by the Government of the Russian Federation.
The term of serving the sentence is calculated from the day the convicted person arrives at the colony-settlement. In this case, the time of the convict’s journey to the place of serving the sentence in accordance with the prescription provided for in part one of this article shall be counted in the term of deprivation of liberty at the rate of one day for one day.
By a court decision, a convict may be taken into custody and sent to a colony-settlement under escort in the manner prescribed by Articles 75 and 76 of this Code, in cases where he evades investigation or trial, violates a measure of restraint or does not have a permanent place of residence for territory of the Russian Federation.
Convicts who were held in custody before the verdict was passed, as well as convicts who, in accordance with paragraphs “c” and “d” of the second part of Article 78 of this Code, the type of correctional institution was changed, are sent to the colony-settlement under escort in the manner prescribed by Articles 75 and 76 of this Code.
If the convict evades receiving the order provided for by paragraph 1 of this article, or fails to arrive at the place of serving the sentence within the period specified in the order, the convicted person is put on the wanted list and is subject to detention for up to 48 hours. This period may be extended by the court up to 30 days.
After the detention of the convicted person, the court, in accordance with part four.1 of Article 396 and paragraph 18.1 of Article 397 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation, decides to place the convicted person in custody, as well as to send the convicted person to a colony-settlement under escort in the manner prescribed by Articles 75 and 76 of this Code, or on changing the type of correctional institution for the convicted person in accordance with part four. 1 of Article 78 of this Code. In this case, the period of serving the sentence is calculated from the day of detention.
If the court recognizes the reason for the convict’s failure to appear to receive the order provided for by part one of this article, or the non-arrival at the place of serving the sentence within the time period established in the order as valid, he is sent to the colony-settlement in the manner prescribed by parts one and two of this article.
Thus, if you are late without good reason, you can be detained and sent to a colony-settlement forcibly.

How to Write a Standout Cover Letter in 2022

OK, you’re sold on how important cover letters are. Here are eight steps to writing one that screams, “I’m a great hire!”

Step 1: Write a fresh cover letter for each job (but yes, you can use a template).

Yes, it’s way faster and easier to take the cover letter you wrote for your last application, change the name of the company, and send it off. But most employers want to see that you’re truly excited about the specific position and organization—which means creating a custom letter for each position.

While it’s OK to recycle a few strong sentences and phrases from one cover letter to the next, don’t even think about sending out a 100% generic letter. “Dear Hiring Manager, I am excited to apply to the open position at your company” is an immediate signal to recruiters and hiring managers that you’re mass-applying to every job listing that pops up on LinkedIn.

At the same time, there’s nothing that says you can’t get a little help: Try out one of our free cover letter templates to make the process a bit easier.

Step 2: Add your contact info.

At the top of your cover letter, you should list out your basic info. You can even copy the same heading from your resume if you’d like. Some contact info you might include (and the order you might include it in) is:

  • Your name
  • Your pronouns (optional)
  • Your location (optional)
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number (optional)
  • Your Linkedin, portfolio, or personal website URL (optional)

Note that only name and email are mandatory, and you don’t need to put a full address on a cover letter or resume anymore. A city and state (or metro area) are more than enough.

So your header might look like this:

If the job posting tells you to submit your cover letter in the body of an email, you can add your contact info at the end, after your name (and if you’d like to forgo the email address here, you can—they have it already).

Step 3: Address your cover letter to the hiring manager—preferably by name.

The most traditional way to address a cover letter is to use the person’s first and last name, including “Mr.” or “Ms.” (for example, “Dear Ms. Jane Smith” or just “Dear Ms. Smith”). But to avoid accidentally using the wrong title, or worse, inadvertently misgendering someone—first and last name also work just fine. And if “Dear” feels a bit too stiff, try “Hello.” But never use generic salutations like “To Whom it May Concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam.”

Step 4: Craft an opening paragraph that’ll hook your reader.

Your opening sets the stage for the whole cover letter. So you want it to be memorable, friendly, conversational, and hyper-relevant to the job you’re pursuing.

No need to lead with your name—the hiring manager can see it already. But it’s good to mention the job you’re applying for (the hiring manager may be combing through candidates for half a dozen different jobs), and yes, you could go with something simple like, “I am excited to apply for [job] with [Company].” But consider introducing yourself with a snappy first paragraph that highlights your excitement about the company you’re applying to, your passion for the work you do, and/or your past accomplishments.

This is a prime spot to include the “why” for your application. Make it very clear why you want this job at this company. Are you a longtime user of their products? Do you have experience solving a problem they’re working on? Do you love their brand voice or approach to product development? Do your research on the company (and check out their Muse profile if they have one) to find out.

For instance, say you’re applying for a marketing job with a company known for its incredible pies and baked goods. You might want to use your opening to mention how you love pie so much that when you were in the 4th grade, you took the blue ribbon in the National Cherry Festival pie-eating contest. Or take a look at this cover letter hook by a client of career coach and Muse writer Jenny Foss, who was working to land a leadership role at a nonprofit specializing in fire prevention:

“I have a personal interest in fire prevention that dates back to my youth. As the daughter of a nurse who worked in a hospital burns unit for many years, I grew up with significant exposure to those impacted by fire. I’d spend hours thinking about my mom’s patients, wishing there were some way to better protect people from fire.”

Step 5: Convey why you’d be a great hire for

this job.

A common cover letter mistake is only talking about how great the position would be for you. Frankly, hiring managers are aware of that—what they really want to know is what you’re going to bring to the position and company.

So once you’ve got the opening under wraps, you should pull out a few key ideas that will make up the backbone of your cover letter. They should show that you understand what the organization is looking for and spell out how your background lines up with the position. Study the job description for hints. What problems is the company looking to solve with this hire? What skills or experiences are mentioned high up, or more than once? These will likely be the most important qualifications.

Select the three to five important qualifications that you feel you exemplify best. For instance, maybe you’re looking for an account executive role and come across a posting that excites you. You might pull out these details that match you well:

  • The job description mentions meeting and exceeding quotas several times.
  • The company has a very collaborative, cross-departmental approach to solving problems.
  • The sales department requires a fast learner so the account executive can get up to speed quickly on leads and tailor pitches to their needs.

If you tend to have a hard time singing your own praises and can’t nail down your strengths, here’s a quick trick: What would your favorite boss, your best friend, or your mentor say about you? How would they sing your praises? Use the answers to inform how you write about yourself. You can even weave in feedback you’ve received to strengthen your case (occasionally, don’t overuse this!). For example:

“When I oversaw our last office move, my color-coded spreadsheets covering every minute detail of the logistics were legendary; my manager said I was so organized, she’d trust me to plan an expedition to Mars.”

Step 6: Back up your qualifications with examples and numbers.

Look at your list of qualifications from the previous step, and think of examples from your past that prove you have them. And go beyond your resume. Don’t just regurgitate what the hiring manager can read elsewhere. Simply put, you want to paint a fuller picture of what experiences and accomplishments make you a great hire and show off what you can sashay through their doors with and deliver once you land the job.

For example, what tells a hiring manager more about your ability to win back former clients? This: “I was in charge of identifying and re-engaging former clients.” Or this: “By analyzing past client surveys, NPS scores, and KPIs, as well as simply picking up the phone, I was able to bring both a data-driven approach and a human touch to the task of re-engaging former clients.”

Having trouble figuring out how to do this? Try asking yourself these questions and finding answers that line up with the qualifications you’ve chosen to focus on:

  • What approach did you take to tackling one of the responsibilities you’ve mentioned on your resume?
  • What details would you include if you were telling someone a (very short!) story about how you accomplished one of your resume bullet points?
  • What about your personality, passion, or work ethic made you especially good at getting the job done?

Come up with your examples, then throw in a few numbers. Hiring managers love to see stats—they show you’ve had a measurable impact on an organization you’ve worked for. Did you bring in more clients than any of your peers? Put together an impressive number of events? Make a process at work 30% more efficient? Work it into your cover letter!

Going back to the example from the last step. How could you prove that you’ll meet and exceed sales quotas if they hire you? Try something like:

I’ve always been very goal-oriented—whether that goal was hitting a new personal best on the swim team in college or smashing my quotas as a sales development rep for ZZZ Inc. As an SDR, I break my quarterly sales goals down month-by-month and then week-by-week—so that I always know whether I’m ahead, behind, or on-track. I also take an hour every Friday to reflect on what I could’ve done better in the previous week—so that I’m always improving. With these strategies, I’ve met my goals for meetings set 10 out of the last 10 quarters and actually averaged 114% to goal for finding leads that eventually turned into sales over every quarter last year. As an account executive for your company, I’d bring that same drive and systematic approach for meeting longer-term targets to my sales quotas.

Do this for each of the qualifications you want to focus on, and feel free to connect your accomplishments directly to the company. Pro tip: Use your space wisely. For more important qualifications, you might dedicate an entire paragraph, while others may only need a sentence or two.

Step 7: Finish with a strong conclusion.

It’s tempting to treat the final lines of your cover letter as a throwaway: “I look forward to hearing from you.” But your closing paragraph is your last chance to emphasize your enthusiasm for the company or how you’d be a great fit for the position. You can also use the end of your letter to add important details—like, say, the fact that you’re willing to relocate for the job.

Some advice might tell you to go with a hard close: Boldly insist that you’re the one, and that you’re going to call them within a week to set up a meeting. But with over 10 years of experience as a recruiter, Foss finds this annoying. It’s one thing to be proactive and confident but, to her, this approach feels like a cheesy tactic stripped out of an old school “How to sell yourself” textbook.

Instead, try something like this:

“I believe my energy, desire to innovate, and experience as a sales leader will serve OrangePurple Co. very well. I would love to meet to discuss the value I could add as your next West Coast Sales Director. I appreciate your consideration and hope to meet with you soon.”

Then be sure to sign off professionally, with an appropriate closing and your first and last name.

Step 8: Reread and revise.

We shouldn’t have to tell you to run your cover letter through spell-check, but remember that having your computer scan for typos isn’t the same as editing. Set your letter aside for a day or even just a few hours, and then read through it again with fresh eyes—you’ll probably notice some changes you want to make.

You might even want to ask a friend or family member to give it a look. In addition to asking them if they spot any errors, you should ask them two questions:

  • Does this sell me as the best person for the job?
  • Does it get you excited?

If the answer to either is “no,” or even slight hesitation, go back for another pass.

The bottom line with cover letters is this: They matter, much more than the naysayers will have you believe. If you nail yours, you could easily go from the “maybe” pile straight to “Oh, hell yes.”

If you’re writing a cover letter for the first time, writing all this might seem pretty tough. After all, you’re probably not a professional writer.

Step #3 – Greet the Hiring Manager

Once you’ve properly listed your contact information, you need to start writing the cover letter contents.

The first thing to do here is to address the cover letter to the hiring manager.

That’s right, the hiring manager! Not the overly popular “Dear Sir or Madam.” You want to show your future boss that you did your research and are really passionate about working with their team.

No one wants to hire a job seeker who just spams 20+ companies and hopes to get hired in any of them.

So, how do you find out who’s the hiring manager? There are several ways to do this. 

The simplest option is to look up the head of the relevant department on LinkedIn. Let’s say you’re applying for the position of a Communication Specialist at Novoresume. The hiring manager is probably Head of Communications or Chief Communications Office.

So, you do a quick lookup on LinkedIn:

And voila! You have your hiring manager.

Or let’s say you’re applying for the position of a server. In that case, you’d be looking for the “restaurant manager.”

If this doesn’t work, you can also check out the “Team” page on the company website; there’s a good chance you’ll at least find the right person there.

Step #4 – Write an Attention-Grabbing Introduction

First impressions matter, especially when it comes to your job search.

Recruiters get hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of applications. Chances are, they’re not going to be reading every single cover letter end-to-end.

So, it’s essential to catch their attention from the very first paragraph.

The #1 problem we see with most cover letter opening paragraphs is that they’re usually extremely generic. Most of them look something like this..

Wrong Example

  • Hey, my name is Jonathan and I’d like to work as a Sales Manager at XYZ Inc. I’ve worked as a sales manager at MadeUpCompany Inc. for 5+ years, so I believe that I’d be a good fit for the position.

See the issue here? This opening paragraph doesn’t say pretty much anything except the fact that you’ve worked the job before.

Do you know who else has similar work experience? All the other applicants you’re competing with.

Instead, you want to start off with 2-3 of your top achievements to really grab the reader’s attention. Preferably, the achievements should be as relevant as possible to the position.

So now, let’s make our previous example shine:

Correct Example

Dear Josh,

My name’s Michael and I’d like to help XYZ Inc. hit and exceed their sales goals as a Sales Manager. I’ve worked with Company X, a fin-tech company, for 3+ years. As a Sales Representative, I generated an average of $30,000+ in sales per month (beating the KPIs by around 40%). I believe that my previous industry experience, as well as excellence in sales, makes me the right candidate for the job.

Now that we’ve covered the introduction, let’s talk about the body of your cover letter. This part is split into two paragraphs: the first is for explaining why you’re the perfect person for the job, and the latter is for proving that you’re a good fit for the company.

So, let’s get started…

Step #5 – Explain why you’re the perfect person for the job

This is where you show off your professional skills and convince the HR manager that you’re a better fit for the job than all the other applicants.

But first things first – before you even write anything, you need to learn what the most important requirements for the role are. So, open up the job ad and identify which of the responsibilities are the most critical.

For the sake of the example, let’s say you’re applying for the position of a Facebook Advertiser. You scan the job ad and see that the top requirements are:

  1. Experience managing a Facebook ad budget of $10,000+ / month
  2. Some skills in advertising on other platforms (Google Search + Twitter)
  3. Excellent copywriting skills

Now, in this section, you need to discuss how you fulfill these requirements. So, here’s how that would look for our example:

Good Example

In my previous role as a Facebook Marketing Expert at XYZ Inc. I handled customer acquisition through ads, managing a monthly Facebook ad budget of $20,000+. As the sole digital marketer at the company, I managed the ad creation & management process end-to-end. Meaning, I created the ad copy, images, picked the targeting, ran optimization trials, and so on.

Other than Facebook advertising, I’ve also delved into other online PPC channels, including:

  • Google Search
  • Twitter

Step #6 – Explain why you’re a good fit for the company

Once you’ve written the last paragraph, you might be thinking – I’m a shoo-in for the job! What else do I need to write? I’ll just wrap up the cover letter and hit that sweet SEND button.

Well, no. You’re not quite there yet.

The HR manager doesn’t only look at whether you’ll be good at the job or not. They’re looking for someone that’s also a good fit for the company culture.

After all, employees that don’t fit in are bound to quit, sooner or later. This ends up costing the company a ton of money, up to 50% of the employee’s annual salary. 

Meaning, you also need to convince the HR manager that you’re really passionate about working with them.

How do you do this? Well, as a start, you want to do some research about the company. You want to know things like:

  • What’s the company’s business model?
  • What’s the company product or service? Have you used it?
  • What’s the culture like? Will someone micro-manage your work, or will you have autonomy on how you get things done?

So, get to Googling. Chances are, you’ll find all the information you need either on the company website or somewhere around the web.

Then, you need to figure out what you like about the company and turn that into text.

Let’s say, for example, you’re passionate about their product and you like the culture of innovation / independent work in the organization.

You’d write something like:

I’ve personally used the XYZ Smartphone, and I believe that it’s the most innovative tech I’ve used in years. The features such as Made-Up-Feature #1 and Made-Up-Feature #2 were real game changers for the device. 

I really admire how Company XYZ thrives for excellence for all its product lines, creating market-leading tech. As someone that thrives in a self-driven environment, I truly believe that I and Company XYZ will be a great match.

What you don’t want to do here is be super generic for the sake of having something to write. Most job seekers tend to mess this one up. Let’s take a look at a very common example we tend to see (way too often):

Incorrect Example

I’d love to work for Company XYZ because of its culture of innovation. I believe that since I’m super creative, I’d be a good fit for the company. The company values of integrity and transparency really vibe with me.

See what’s wrong here? The example doesn’t really say anything about the company. “Culture of Innovation” is something most companies claim to have. 

The same goes for “values of integrity and transparency” – the writer just googled what the values for the organization are, and said that they like them.

Any hiring manager that reads this will see through the fluff.

So, make sure to do a lot of research and come up with good reasons why you’re applying.

Step #7 – Wrap up with a call to action

Finally, it’s time to finish up your cover letter and write the conclusion.

In the final paragraph, you want to:

  • Wrap up any points you couldn’t in the previous paragraphs. Do you have anything left to say? Any other information that could help the hiring manager make their decision? Mention it here.
  • Thank the hiring manager for their time. It never hurts to be courteous, as long as you don’t come off as too needy.
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action. The very last sentence in your cover letter should be a call to action. You should ask the hiring manager to take some sort of action.

And now, let’s turn this into a practical example:

Good Example:

So to wrap it all up, thanks for looking into my application. I hope I can help Company X make the most out of their Facebook marketing initiatives. I’d love to further discuss how my previous success at XYZ Inc. can help you achieve your facebook marketing goals.

Step #8 – Use the right formal closing

Once you’re done with the final paragraph, all you have to do is write down a formal “goodbye” and you’re good to go.

Feel free to use one of the most popular conclusions to a cover letter:

  • Best Regards,
  • Kind Regards,
  • Sincerely,
  • Thank you,

And we’re finally done! Before sending off the cover letter, make sure to proofread it with software like Grammarly, or maybe even get a friend to review it for you.

It is always advisable to write a cover letter when applying for a vacancy, but in some cases it is simply necessary.

When is a cover letter required?

– If in the requirements for the vacancy the employer writes about the need for a cover letter when applying for a vacancy. Some recruiters go for various tricks. For example, sometimes they want to make sure that the applicant has carefully read the job requirements. In this case, they may ask you to write a certain code word or phrase in the cover letter.

  • If you are applying for a position in a foreign company.
  • In case you want to change the field of activity.

The cover letter should reflect:

  • your motivation;
  • relevant work experience;
  • skills and personal qualities necessary for successful work in this position;
  • your other advantages as a candidate.

There are no clear recommendations regarding the size of a cover letter. It can be either short or long. The main thing is that it contains specific information that matches the requirements for the vacancy.

In the vast majority of cases, a cover letter should be written in a formal business style. Deviations from the rules are possible if you apply for creative work. In this case, humor and creativity will be quite appropriate. But even here a sense of proportion is needed.

The first thing to remember is that there is no universal template for writing a cover letter. Any cover letter requires an individual approach. Therefore, its creation can partly be called a creative process.

Before writing a cover letter, carefully read the text of the vacancy and try to present the ideal candidate for this position. Compare the job requirements with your experience and focus on relevant competencies in the letter.

To make the text easier to read, the cover letter should have a clear structure.

A cover letter might look like this:

  1. Say hello to the recruiter.
  2. Write what vacancy you are applying for.
  3. Explain why you are interested in this position.
  4. Describe relevant experience and, if none, the skills and personality traits required to be successful in this position. Indicate other information that may be of interest to the employer and convince him to choose you. Justify why your experience and competencies will allow you to work successfully.
  5. Thank you for your attention.
  6. Sign and provide contact details where you can be contacted.
  7. If the employer writes about the need for a portfolio in the job requirements, supplement the cover letter with a note with links to your work.

For example, here’s what a cover letter for a PR manager job might look like:

If no relevant experience is available, think about what skills and personality traits can bring out the best in you and convince the recruiter that you are the right fit for the position.

  • Do not duplicate your resume or part of it in your cover letter. At the same time, the cover letter should complement your resume and not contradict it.
  • Read about the company you want to work for before writing your cover letter.
  • Do not tell your biography.
  • Don’t ask questions such as salary levels and working hours. Such things are worth discussing in an interview.
  • Avoid formalities and cliches, for example: “Good afternoon! I am sending my resume for the position of sales manager. Regards, Mikhail”. Or: “Hello! Please take a look at my CV. Tatiana”. Or: “I am responsible, disciplined and stress-resistant. I strive for development and I know how to work in a team.”
  • Don’t write about qualities that don’t match the job, irrelevant experience, or worse, that the job you’re applying for is seen as an alternate airfield. It would be a big mistake, for example, to send a cover letter when applying for a marketing vacancy with the following content:
    “Good evening! I can’t find a job as a German teacher, so I’m considering other offers that are somehow related or not at all related to the German language.
    Interested in everything new. Easy to train. In the course of my career, I gained experience in sales. I also have leadership experience. I also worked a lot with money.
    I have excellent product presentation skills as a manager.
    I think that a managerial or high-level position would suit me. Now I am looking for a permanent job and I am ready to consider any job options. I live near your company.

  • Don’t fake a cover letter. It is not uncommon for applicants to put dots, exclamation marks or simply write “Good afternoon” in the cover letter field.
  • Be honest!
  • Demonstrate knowledge of business etiquette. Do not try to be witty, flirt with the employer and write a cover letter like: “Hi! I don’t know what to write here, so I’ll write without undue modesty: I’m good. Waiting for an answer, Vasya. Business style does not allow familiarity and familiarity.
  • Don’t push for pity. The cover letter should be positive and persuasive.

Should I write a cover letter or not when submitting a resume for a position of interest? This question is asked daily by almost all applicants. More than half of them (54%), according to the Superjob.ru Research Center, decide for themselves that cover letters are a waste of time, because all the important information is set out in the resume. About a third of Russians (31%), on the contrary, are sure that a well-written cover letter significantly increases the chances of success. Whose point of view is correct?

This dispute in absentia is one of those in which both sides are right in their own way. According to Superjob.ru, the majority of employers (91%) consider all resumes, regardless of the presence of a cover letter, 8% work only with those resumes that have at least a formal cover letter, and only 1% do not consider resumes without cover letters at all.

Why do Russian recruiters, unlike their Western colleagues, do not attach importance to cover letters? The reason is the insufficiently high level of these documents. According to recruiting managers, most applicants do not know how to write cover letters correctly, so often an illogical message with many errors is simply not taken into account. “The cover letter is not that important because very few job seekers know how to write them,” explain the recruiters we interviewed.

On the other hand, it’s easy to get extra glasses against this background! If your cover letter is written logically, competently and contains important information for the employer, do not doubt that this will be a significant plus! You just need to learn how to write this document, and the path to your dream job can become shorter.

Cover letter structure


Let’s start with the main one. Why do we write a cover letter? The purpose of this document is to draw attention to your resume, make the recruiter read it carefully and be interested in your candidacy.

At the same time, the wording should be within the framework of generally accepted ideas about business correspondence. Creativity and humor are acceptable only if you have no doubts about the relevance and quality of your ideas and jokes. However, there is one nuance. If you are applying for a position in a creative team, then deviations from the business style are quite appropriate. With a non-standard (but interesting and competent) cover letter, you may well interest the employer.

What should be included in the cover letter? Experts point out several points that should be followed.

It is very important to correctly address the addressee. As a rule, the vacancies posted on Superjob.ru contain information about the contact person – the HR manager who directly supervises the vacancy. It is best to address the cover letter to him. “Good day, Elena!”; “Dear Igor Anatolyevich!” – the usual wording is fine. If a specific employee is not specified, you can use the standard “politeness formulas”: “Dear ladies and gentlemen!”. Experts warn against informal appeals that are not typical of the business style of writing, for example, “Good day, employees of *** LLC!” etc.

It is also customary to indicate the source of information about the vacancy in the cover letter: “Your company’s social network page says that you need a sales manager”; “From your employee, IT specialist Sergey Sergeyev, I learned that you have a vacancy for a 1C programmer. ” However, if you send a resume through a recruiting portal, this is not necessary – the recruiter already knows where you got the information.

Now let’s get to the point. In a few sentences (short and clear) you need to state who you are and why you want to work in this particular company. At the same time, you do not need to retell your resume – it is only important to emphasize the most important thing – what distinguishes you from other candidates. As a rule, this is work experience and professional achievements. For example: “My experience in PR is 4 years. At my current job, I was able to double the number of media coverage of the company within the previous budget. Working with you attracts me with the scale of the tasks and the opportunity to work in a creative team.” Interested in your qualities, the recruiter will open and carefully study your CV.

Experts warn you not to write about your career ambitions in your cover letter. This can scare off the recruiter, because at the moment he needs to close a specific position, and not replenish the talent pool of top managers with your candidacy. So the phrase: “Working in your company attracts me with the opportunity for career growth,” it is better to cross it out.

Do not focus on the questionable places in your resume, if any. For example, it is better to explain why you did not work for six months at an interview, with personal contact. A cover letter is not a confession or a detailed autobiography, but only a short business self-presentation.

Avoid platitudes. “I am easily trained, sociable and stress-resistant” – this is stated in many resumes and cover letters, so many recruiters do not pay attention to such template phrases.

At the end of the letter, do not forget to add that if you are interested in your candidacy, you are ready to come for an interview and answer all the remaining questions for you. In addition, you must subscribe and indicate your contacts. Of course, this data is in the resume, but these are the rules of business etiquette.

So what does a good cover letter look like? For example, a candidate for the position of a sales manager may compose it as follows:

“Good afternoon, Ekaterina!

From the “Career” section on your company’s website, I learned about an open vacancy for a sales manager.

You may be interested in my experience in this area: for five years I have been selling software in the company “***”. Among my personal achievements are large contracts for the supply of software products with a number of state corporations, an increase in the company’s sales by 40% annually.

Working for your company attracts me with the opportunity to apply my experience and knowledge to a larger business. If my resume (see attachment) interests you, I will be happy to answer your questions at the interview.

Finishing touches


Before sending a written letter and resume to the addressee, soberly assess its length. You should be guided by a simple rule: brevity is the sister of talent. 2-3 small paragraphs – this will be enough to interest the recruiter, but not tire him.

Finally, don’t forget to check your creation for literacy. Spelling and punctuation errors can negate all your work, especially if the position you are applying for implies a high level of general development.

        Manners for Kids: Having Good Manners is an Incredibly Important Life Skill

        It’s hard, but developing your kids’ manners beyond Please & Thank You is critical.

        And like so many other things, getting kids into the habit of using manners at an early age makes things much easier in the long haul.

        As my kids age and begin to play away from home and interact with teachers and parents, I’m noticing that they don’t always use eye contact when speaking with others and they often forget to say “excuse me.”

        I’ve also noticed that simply telling them to practice these good manners isn’t enough.

        To develop good manners in kids, they need to know why this is important for them. After all, they see their father and me using manners all the time, so they know that these are things that people are supposed to do, but kids want to know what the point is.

        When I explain the why behind certain manners, their eyes light up with comprehension. “Ohhhh,” they say. “Okay!” And they begin to practice it.

        To start working on manners for kids, try to model the kinds of behavior you want to see in your children.

        11 Good Manners for Kids

        Here are what I consider to be the 11 most important manners for kids and my reasons WHY they are important.

        While many of these seem like common sense, kids don’t know what’s expected of them until you explain it. Make your expectations clear, and then model it yourself so they can see these good manners for kids in action.

        1) Say please. This shows consideration for others.

        2) Say thank you. This demonstrates appreciation and gratitude.

        3) Look people in the eye when you speak to them. It’s a good way to show respect for the other person. (**Please note that neurodivergent people struggle with eye contact. It’s smart to teach kids that not all adults will hold eye contact. It’s also wise to observe your child to see if they don’t maintain eye contact because they are simply unable to.)

        4) Apologize. It shows empathy and that you are taking responsibility for your actions.

        5) Smile & have a good attitude. This makes everything better for yourself and others!

        6) Make small talk. This is an important social skill for friendships and, later in life, getting and keeping a job.

        7) Ask questions of others. This shows interest in others’ ideas and feelings.

        8) Say excuse me. This shows consideration for others.

        9) Look for opportunities to compliment others. This makes others feel good and helps with reciprocal relationships.

        10) Share. This shows others you care, and helps you to think of others, makes you appreciate what you have.

        11) Treat others the way you want to be treated. Covers all bases!

        Reinforce Good Manners for Kids

        Reinforcing good manners isn’t hard but it is something that needs to be deliberately undertaken.
        Here are several ways I’ve found that work to foster good manners for kids:

        2) Give your kids “the talk”

        Before going to school, the store, a friend’s house, or relatives’ house, emphasize the manners for kids that you expect them to follow. It sounds basic, but a quick reminder about what your expectations are for behavior can go a long way!

        3) Create your own list of family manners

        Focus on the ones that are important for your own family. State them in a positive way and post them somewhere as a reminder for everyone.

        4) Make a manners competition within your household

        Have a marble jar or a sticker chart for every family member and give each other points for using good manners. At the end of the week, let the winner pick dessert for the night, choose a fun family activity for the night, have the evening off from chores, or some other incentive of his or her choice.

        5) Come up with a fun phrase or sound

        Choose a sound to serve as a reminder for one another when manners are forgotten. Some ideas: a buzzer sound, “rewind,” “oops, you forgot something,” or “let’s try that again.”

        10 Things Parents Really Need to Talk about with Their Kids

        Regular communication between parents and kids is not only the key to good manners, but it’s also important for their safety and emotional health.

        Over my many years of working as a school social worker and my many years as a parent, I have come up with a list of 10 things that all parents really need to talk about with their kids.

        Yes, there are probably more than 10 conversations you need to have with your child over the course of their lifetime, but these are the biggies. Some of these topics will be a one-time thing, but many of them should be more ongoing.

        Here they are, in no particular order:

        1) Believe in Yourself

        Self-confidence might be the most important factor in life success and overall happiness.

        And no, I am not talking about the overconfident trash-talking kid (or coworker!) that we all know and love.

        Kids need to be able to recognize their talents and positive qualities.

        They need your help to discover these things. Take the time to tell them how proud you are. Point out their positive qualities. Tell them that you believe in them. This will help them to explore, take risks, and find success.

        2) Appreciate What You Have

        Whether you are super wealthy or barely getting by, it is important to remind your kids to be grateful for what they have.

        My husband does a great job of pointing out the little things to our kids all the time. Warm pajamas, healthy food, bikes, great teachers, helpful neighbors, the ability to walk: all of these things are so easy to take for granted.

        Help your kids notice the little things. Having an attitude of gratitude is contagious and makes you appreciate the little things.

        3) Be Nice

        While this may sound overly simple, it’s a great way to live.

        I love wearing my “be nice” shirt. We even have a “be nice” sign on our wall at home. 

        It matters how you treat others.

        Be nice to your siblings, be nice to your friends, and be nice to your parents. If you are nice to others, they will be nice to you. How…nice!

        4) Be Safe

        Regardless of your stance on guns, as soon as your kids start going to other people’s houses, you need to talk to them about gun safety.

        Lots of people have guns in their homes and lots of people do not have them locked up. It is hard for children to understand how dangerous guns are. Tell them (more than once!) what they should do if one of their friends wants to show them a gun. Go through different “what if?” situations.

        Teach them from a young age to listen to that little voice in their head. Tell them, “if something is telling you this doesn’t seem right, listen.” The same is true for alcohol, cigarettes, and a myriad of other scary and dangerous things.

        It is important that your kids know what is acceptable and what is not and that you will always be proud of them for doing the right thing.

        5) Your Body Belongs to You

        This one really ties in with the previous message about safety. While there are some discussions in elementary school classrooms about personal safety and good touch/bad touch, it’s not enough. Parents need to talk to kids about this, too.

        Both boys and girls need to understand that their bodies are private and belong to them.

        There is a very small group of people who should be allowed to see children naked.

        Funny story: I forgot to mention to my kids that their pediatrician is someone who is on “the list” of approved people. My feisty little daughter just about kicked the poor doctor where it counts during her last well-child visit when he tried to pull her pants down a little bit to feel her belly. Oops!

        6) Winning is Not That Important

        We live in a competitive society. And let’s be honest, everyone likes to win more than they like to lose.

        But winning isn’t the only point of competition. It breaks my heart to see kids in my son’s little league division (ages 9 and 10) already smashing bats on the ground, chucking gloves, and crying over a strikeout or a loss.

        Allow your kids to lose at games and competitions (yes, I know that sounds mean) and teach them how to be a good sport. 

        Praise hard work, effort, and not throwing a fit when they lose.  

        Oh, and be a good example yourself!

        7) Stand up for What You Know is Right

        Teach your child to listen to that little voice in his or her head that tells them whether something is a good idea. And teach them to stick up for others who are being mistreated.

        One of my proudest mom moments was when my 5-year-old daughter saw some kids being mean to her friend at the park and she marched right over to them, said, “You leave my friend alone!” and took her friend over to another part of the playground.

        Do the right thing. Always.

        8) Choose Good Friends

        This is a tough one. Once your kids enter elementary school, they start to navigate the surprisingly tricky social world of childhood friendships.

        I encourage my kids to have a lot of different friends. 

        While having a best friend sounds like a great idea, it’s really not when kids are young. Being completely wrapped up in one individual isn’t very healthy. If your child has a friend who they are getting into trouble with, try to get them to understand how that might not be good for them.

        The more you can talk your kids through those situations (rather than telling them who they should and should not be friends with), the better off they will be in the long run (hopefully!).

        9. Be Creative, Go Outside, Get Dirty

        It saddens me to hear how many hours kids spend in front of screens. Video games have become a full-time job for so many.

        While I enjoy playing the Wii as much as anyone (though my husband said I am about to be cut off because of my language when I play Mario Kart!), have limits. Take a family walk or a bike ride. Have a picnic at the park. Let your kids play in the mud. Plant a garden. Go catch frogs. Finger paint. You get the idea.

        Again, you have to set a good example for this.

        10) Do What You Can to Make Things Better in the World

        While you shouldn’t expect your kids to be raising thousands of dollars for charity or volunteering every weekend, it’s never too early to plant the seed of doing good in the world.

        If you give your kids allowance, have them save part of it in a giving jar. Offer to help a neighbor pull weeds. Pay it forward at the drive-thru. Stop to help someone who has dropped something. Again, when your kids see you doing good for others, they will do the same.

        Good manners show that you value the feelings of others. Here are the 30 manners that your child should know by the age of 10.

        1. Saying “please” and “thank you.” It shows gratitude for the things others do for you.

        12. Not using electronics at the dinner table. Show others that their presence is important to you.
        13. Sitting attentively through plays, movies, and musical performances. Show proper respect, even if you’re bored.
        14. Washing your hands before meals. It’s good etiquette and good hygiene too.
        15. Not commenting on personal appearance. It hurts feelings unnecessarily.
        16. Holding doors open for others. No one likes to have the door slam on them as they enter a room.
        17. Keeping burps silent. And remember to say “Excuse me” afterward.
        18. Offering to help adults if they need it. Help wash someone’s car or carry their groceries.
        19. Giving a genuine apology when needed. Sometimes, the other person needs to hear you say, “I’m sorry.”
        20. Asking to be excused at the end of a meal. Instead of just getting up to leave, say, “Please may I be excused?”
        21. Using good table manners when eating. Use utensils properly and chew with your mouth closed.
        22. Having a positive attitude. You will be someone that people enjoy having around.
        23. Shaking hands. A firm handshake makes a good impression when you meet someone.
        24. Returning items after borrowing them. Show respect for other people’s belongings.
        25. Avoiding bad language. The words you use reveal your character.
        26. Sharing. It’s a basic way to show consideration for the needs and feelings of others.
        27. Giving compliments. Everyone likes to hear nice things about themselves.
        28. Doing tasks for adults without complaining. Don’t make their lives more complicated by arguing.
        29. Writing thank-you notes when you receive gifts. Technology is great, but sometimes people need a more personal touch.
        30. Doing for others what you want them to do for you. If you remember this rule, it’s easier to follow all the others.

        Good manners should be taught as soon as your child understands what you are saying. In addition, children should be taught good manners throughout the growing up period.         Practice

        All theoretical knowledge must be consolidated in practice. Arrange family dinners, because this is a good opportunity to consolidate the rules of behavior at the table.         Frankincense and myrrh: the best gifts for Christmas?

        The beginning of the tradition of giving gifts at Christmas was, as you might guess, the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem.

        As it is said in the New Testament, the Magi brought him a gift of gold, frankincense and myrrh (aka myrrh).

        Everything is clear with gold, but where can you find these frankincense and myrrh today?

        My search led me to the town of Wajir in northeastern Kenya.

        Half an hour’s drive from the city is an eight-hectare plantation with myrrh trees and boswellia, the resin from which frankincense is made.

        Doctoring

        Haret Hasan has been looking after these trees for 15 years, ever since he inherited the plantation from his father.

        “We take care of these trees because their resin makes good medicine,” he says.

        “We spray [resin extract] in our homes to keep snakes and insects away. this place. If someone breaks an arm or a leg, before we do anything, we smear the place of the fracture.”

        Frankincense : In Kenya and neighboring countries, incense is chewed. It can also be ground into a powder and then incensed with it. Frankincense is also used in perfumery and essential oil production, in cosmetics and as a food flavoring.

        Myrrh : Used in ancient Egypt for embalming mummies. The Bible says that myrrh mixed with wine was offered by Roman soldiers to the crucified Jesus. In Egyptian madrasas, myrrh is used instead of ink. In addition, it can be incense to repel snakes and insects. The locals also use it as a medicine. Myrrh is also one of the ingredients in perfumery, and even in the production of toothpaste.

        Four tar pickers arrived at the plantation with me, armed with axes and plastic boxes. They go from tree to tree looking for a place to collect myrrh gum.

        They cut the bark of a tree to cause it to exude.

        “These trees grow everywhere and it’s important to preserve them,” says Ambiya Osman, adding that she teaches pickers not to take too much resin to avoid damaging the tree .

        “But they don’t make much money because they only sell raw resin,” she adds.

        We are returning to Wajir. It is a small city, but commerce is flourishing here.

        Ambiya Osman shows me several shops selling myrrh, frankincense and other similar gifts of nature.

        A shop owner shows us a sack full of brown lumps of myrrh. Most of all, they are similar to dried fruits.

        “A kilo of myrrh costs eight dollars,” says the store owner. Sometimes the price drops to four.

        “They would make a lot more money if they had a factory in Wajir to process this resin,” says Ambiya Osman.

        Sweet smell

        There is a similar factory in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

        A strong, sweet smell is the first thing I smell when I enter the Lubanchem Limited factory building in Nairobi’s industrial district.

        The idea to open such a factory came from the pharmaceutical chemist Sadki Haq.

        “In 1997, my father brought home some frankincense, and then I had the idea to open a factory to extract oil from it,” she says.

        Before my eyes, two workers spread pieces of raw incense on the floor and sort them by resin quality.

        Sadka Haq says that this shipment of raw incense came from Somalia.

        Myrrh trees grow in desert and semi-desert areas in northern Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, and across the Red Sea in Yemen and Oman.

        “The frankincense tree grows mainly in alkaline soil with a high percentage of limestone. Usually nothing else grows around. The worse the conditions, the better the oil from the resin of these trees,” says Sadka Haq.

        The oil is produced by distillation. After sorting, the resin is boiled and the steam, which is a mixture of water and oil, passes through a condenser. The water and oil are separated and the clear, golden oil is packaged for sale.

        Growing market

        Sadka Hak exports all of its products to the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia.

        “In Africa itself, the market is growing, but here few people have heard of incense,” she says.

        According to her, most of her clients use her products for medical purposes, “when they have bleeding gums or bad breath. .. some use frankincense for aromatherapy.”

        Bright Beginners: Birth–9 Months (1:4)

        We adjust to your baby’s individual needs and schedule while providing a structured environment. Your child will have the opportunity to explore all kinds of sensory materials as well as have time to engage in creative activities that include story time, sensory time, music and movement, crayons, paint, markers, play dough and clay (when developmentally appropriate). Towards the end of this classroom your child will be encouraged to roll, sit unsupported, and  grasp objects.  Our teachers create a safe and loving environment each day for your baby to learn and grow in. We look forward to sharing the children’s explorations with you during the classroom documentations, the daily note and conversations.

        Little Movers: 7 Months–15 Months (1:4)

        We foster your infant’s social emotional development by giving them full verbal and physical attention. We follow their lead and provide a responsive learning environment based on their interests. We teach them about items and subjects that are important to them (animals, body parts, family members). Teachers verbally reflect on the infant’s exploration by describing the activity that they are engaged in. In this classroom your child will become much more adventurous with their motor skills. They will go from an unsupported sit to a crawl, then to a walk.  Your child will start baby food and transition to solid foods at 12 months.  At 12 months your child will transition to whole milk, a sippy cup, and go from a crib to a cot.

        Creative Learners: 13 Months–30 Months (1:4)

        The children are given daily opportunities to explore and learn through age appropriate toys and projects. Children in this classroom are encouraged to try to use their words to express their needs and wants. All activities are individually developed to create learning experiences and social experiences through play, projects, and activities.         Our safe and enriching program focuses on all aspects of creative learning. Our hands on activities encompass exciting items to help stimulate young imaginative minds. We incorporate the Park Hill school district’s requirements for kindergarten into our own curriculum to make sure our pre kindergartners are ready. We are also a center based facility which includes art, math, science, writing and literacy, dramatic play, block, and manipulatives. Reading readiness and letter recognition is very important to the learning process. Therefore we make sure and try to journal at least every other day. We keep the same daily schedule each day, that way the children know what to expect, yet flexible to accommodate the needs and interests of each child.
