what, when and how they celebrate

One of the largest Russian cities will celebrate its 800th anniversary this year. They prepared for the memorable date in advance, some festive events have already begun, they will culminate on City Day, 19August. People in Nizhny Novgorod love holidays, they know how to celebrate them. Almost every year there are new ones, some of them take root and become a tradition. But the greatest love of the townspeople is universal and all-Russian: New Year, Victory Day, Day of Russia, as well as religious ones: Christmas, Epiphany, Maslenitsa, Easter.

Nizhny Novgorod is a million-plus city, which includes 8 districts, in terms of population comparable to some provincial cities of Russia. Therefore, do not be surprised that some urban areas have their own holidays.

What holidays are celebrated in Nizhny Novgorod

In addition to national and international holidays, Nizhny Novgorod celebrates:

  • March 28 is Maxim Gorky’s birthday.
  • June 23 is the day when the bombing of the city ended in 1943.
  • 3rd Saturday of August (in 2021 – on Thursday, August 19) – City Day.
  • The second half of September is the day of Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

New Year

The New Year is traditionally celebrated in Nizhny Novgorod as part of the Gorky Christmas tree festival. Events usually start on December 25, the date of Catholic Christmas, and last until January 10. The center of the celebration, as, indeed, in many other cases, is the pedestrian Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, as well as other main places in the historical center: Minin and Pozharsky Square, Gorky Square, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. Throughout the city, slides for skiing, playgrounds with entertainment and master classes are growing, fairs are appearing where you can taste various New Year’s delicacies and buy souvenirs. Almost all city restaurants offer their entertainment programs. On the night of December 31 to January 1, fireworks are launched into the sky.

Epiphany

Swimming in the ice hole, including the Volga, celebrating one of the main Christian holidays is a long tradition of many Nizhny Novgorod residents. Every year, in several places of the city, fonts are prepared and locker rooms, heating points, lighting are equipped, doctors and rescuers are on duty.

Maslenitsa

This holiday is inextricably linked with fairs. It was there that an effigy of Maslenitsa was usually installed and burned, and people tried many types of pancakes. Nizhny Novgorod is also associated with the fair. It was local bargaining that was once the most important in Russia. And today the Nizhny Novgorod Fair has not lost its significance. Here they arrange the center for the celebration of Maslenitsa. An entertainment program with performances by folk groups, winter fun, master classes of traditional Russian crafts and, of course, pancakes.

Victory Day

During the Great Patriotic War, Nizhny Novgorod became the most important industrial center for supplying the army with weapons, which was why it was subjected to brutal Nazi air raids. The city has fully felt the horrors of the war, and May 9 is a special day for its residents, which usually hosts several events. On the Nizhnevolzhskaya embankment there is a parade of military units and military equipment, including wartime equipment. This is where the Victory March takes place. Nizhny Novgorod residents also take part in the traditional Immortal Regiment campaign. Part of the events takes place on Minin and Pozharsky Square, the main event is a festive concert. Separate programs are organized by theaters and exhibition centers of the city in all districts.

Day of Russia

Before the pandemic, this holiday was celebrated at several city venues: Minin and Pozharsky squares, Teatralnaya, in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya street and Nizhnevolzhskaya embankment – concerts of performers of various directions, theatrical performances, and much more. In 2021, Russia Day became the starting point for the start of celebrations dedicated to the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod. Music festivals were held every Saturday, consisting of a concert and evening fireworks on the Nizhnevolzhskaya embankment.

City Day

In 2021, City Day was celebrated in Nizhny on a grand scale — the city turned 800 years old. City Day in Nizhny Novgorod was celebrated on the second Sunday of September, and on the Day of Russia, June 12, and more recently on the third Saturday of August. It was decided to celebrate the anniversary on August 19 – 800 days after June 12, 2019, at the suggestion of the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin. Especially for the celebration of the anniversary, the project “Team 800” was developed. The festive events began on Russia Day, June 12, and ended on September 12. The scale of the events can be judged by the fact that a special decree on the celebration was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The venues for the celebration were the central streets and squares of the city, as well as the Nizhny Novgorod stadium and the surrounding area.
