We have just arrived in Southport, Australia’s southernmost city, and are staying at a desert campsite that bills itself as “Last stop in Tasmania”. I don’t know what was more in this statement – pride or despondency…
My husband did not yet suspect that I had my own reason, an ulterior motive for coming here.
In recent years, I have seen more and more references to Aurora Australis, the southern variant of the northern lights.
In the Northern Hemisphere, from northern Canada to Iceland, it’s par for the course: crowds of tourists come to see the colorful lights dancing in the sky. But few people know that the Southern Hemisphere has its own light show, no less magical, and I was determined to see it.

“I have a feeling this is Australian by birthright.
And people just don’t know it,” says Margaret Sonnemann, author of The Radiance Seeker’s Handbook ( Aurora Chaser’s Handbook ) and founder of the Aurora Australis Tasmania Facebook page on the southern phenomenon.
The southern ( Aurora Australis ) and northern ( Aurora Borealis ) auroras can be observed in the so-called auroral zone, which has the form of rings centered on the Earth’s magnetic poles. The glow of the upper layers of the atmosphere occurs when they interact with charged particles of the solar wind, a stream of ionized particles from the solar corona.
As Rakesh Panwar from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology explains, this aurora can be seen not only at high, polar latitudes, but sometimes at middle latitudes – when the solar corona becomes especially active.
While the aurora borealis can be observed on the Australian mainland, it is much better to do it on the island of Tasmania (or New Zealand), where the skies are always clear and much closer to the pole.
That is why I dragged my husband 600 km from Melbourne.

I’m not the only one who fell under the spell of these dancing lights in the sky. Sonnemann, an American who moved to Tasmania 32 years ago, told me she got hooked on watching the aurora borealis back in 2005, when she was simply breathtaking from what was happening in the sky above her head.
“There was something magical in the movement of the rays,” she recalls. “Every second everything in the sky changed. It was beautiful and exciting.”

” Hundreds of millions of animals died in the fires here. Although Sonnemann knew other local aurora watchers, there was no central source of information about when and where to see Aurora Australis.
And she realized that a public address system was needed. Sonnemann created her Facebook page in 2010, mostly with the support of fellow Aurora fans. Now the group has more than 85 thousand members and 10 administrators.
“Photographers quickly ran into our group,” she says.

She says that while the aurora is commonly thought of as colorful lights in the sky, in Tasmania you often see it as white – sometimes with just a little colored glow around it. A really big aurora happens when space activity is strong enough.
“You don’t see much color with the naked eye, our eyes are not designed to see color at night,” she explains. But in the photo everything will be seen perfectly.
Sonnemann is so into Aurora Australis that her face lights up when she talks about him. No wonder she was nicknamed “Lady Aurora”.
“One of the advantages of our aurora is that we don’t see it mostly overhead, but on the horizon,” she says, explaining that Tasmania is much farther from the South Pole than many Aurora viewpoints. – from the North.
“This means that our photographers are able to capture a greater variety of colors, as they usually shoot what is on the horizon. If you look at photographs taken in the Northern Hemisphere, the glow is mostly green. When we look horizontally, more colors are visible, almost all colors are red, green, yellow, blue and purple.
“I often say it’s like visible music,” she adds with a smile.

In the Southern Hemisphere – whether you’re in Tasmania, New Zealand, or even some of southern Victoria – you have a real opportunity to see fairy lights in the summer after dark.
And the lights will be as striking as ever, from intense white pillars in the sky to streaks of ethereal greens and reds.
But I seem to have chosen a completely inappropriate weekend – with a gloomy overcast sky and large drops of rain.
A Southporter told us that he often sees the aurora in the summer – straight from his backyard. But not at this time of year. Come when the weather is clear, he told us.
He was right. A gray blanket of clouds hung in the sky, and when it got dark, everything above turned into thick blackness.
However, this was not my only mistake. Sonnemann, whom we met in the morning, said that I was in vain trying to come to the southernmost point of Australia.
“It’s a good idea to just stay away from the big city lights, otherwise you can see the aurora from anywhere in this state,” she said.
“You need nothing to block the sky to the south, neither hills nor trees. In general, all of Tasmania is equally good for this. The main thing is that it is dark enough. You can even watch it from your own porch.”

Based on all this , the next morning we left the town and went to the island of Bruni, which is actually two islands connected by a narrow isthmus.
For tourists and travelers, the island of Bruny is a real treasure. From the world-famous cheese to the unique white wallabies (marsupial mammals from the kangaroo family), there is much to see and do here, so, I decided, even if we are not destined to see the light music of heaven, we will have a good time on Bruni.
This island is so far from civilization that even without the southern lights, its sky looks magical – with the Milky Way in all its glory and bright stars all over the sky.
We drove from the ferry along the only road past distilleries, breweries and cheese shops. Eucalyptus trees were crowded along the road, and between them from time to time there was a stunning view of the ocean sparkling under the sun.
I booked a place for us with a panoramic view of Cloudy Bay, where sleepy waves crash against the shore and turn into white foam.
A strip of golden sandy beach, hills densely overgrown with forests… All this was extraordinarily beautiful.

The island is a photographer’s dream, said Ben Kienhuis, manager of Bruny Island Coastal Retreats, showing us the way to our cottage.
And he was right. The whole bay was perfectly visible from the windows of the living room, and nothing blocked the horizon. From here we can see the southern lights, I thought hopefully.
The night sky here is so impressive, the manager says, that the company recently began offering special aurora photography tours, a first they believe in Tasmania.
Touring photographer Luc Sharkey warned us that it’s not easy to catch a good aurora. But tracking, hunting for it is part of the fun.
Sonnemann taught me how to use a variety of apps and weather websites to help beginners navigate their pursuit of the glow.
On them, for example, you can find data on the wind speed, the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field and the magnitude of the index K (showing the level of perturbation of the Earth’s magnetic field).
All this together gives an idea of the likelihood of auroras. Facebook groups like the one run by Sonnemann are also great places to look for the phenomenon.

Understanding all this data was not easy, but incredibly exciting and addictive. I found myself constantly looking at the app on my smartphone, hoping that the conditions would change and I would see the southern lights.
“There are never any guarantees,” Sonnemann warned me. “You can never be sure.”
However, despite the apparent elusiveness of the aurora borealis, interest in it has increased remarkably in recent years.
According to Sonnemann, most of the members of her Facebook group are no longer locals and photographers, but tourists from different countries who want to come and see everything with their own eyes. And she is worried that in the event of an influx of travelers, the island may not be able to cope – there is still no necessary infrastructure here.
“When they come from places like Singapore, they are even surprised by the night sky,” she says.
“Their life is completely illuminated, they don’t know what a dark sky is, they haven’t seen it. They are afraid to drive in the dark afraid to leave the house when it gets dark. I think it’s terrible. ”
To meet the demand for viewing the Aurora Borealis, Sonnemann is working on a project to create special platforms that can be reached by car or taxi, with explanatory posters and photography tips.

“Even when there’s no aurora – and it doesn’t happen every night – they could watch the sky and see the Milky Way for the first time in their lives,” says Sonnemann. “Even without the aurora, the night sky is beautiful here.”
That night I stayed up for a long time, piercing the sky full of thick clouds with my eyes. The K index showed one, the wind speed was low, which meant that the southern lights were unlikely.
It was terribly cold and I fell asleep next to the fireplace. I woke up at about 2:00 a.m. as if I had smelled something.
I got up and opened the sliding doors. The bay was in front of me. The cold air took my breath away. I looked up. No glow.
But the clouds suddenly parted, and before me opened a bottomless black sky dotted with stars. I stood quietly, listening to the gentle roar of the ocean, stretching beyond the horizon, all the way to the South Pole.
I should have felt some disappointment, but for some reason I didn’t feel it. Perhaps because of the magic of the moment or the beauty of the sky that opened wide.
Whatever it was, I was sure that the southern lights would appear to me sooner or later – when the right time came. In the meantime, I absorbed the loneliness, space and silence of the moment. I knew that it was not in vain that I ended up here, on this island at the end of the world.

How Netflix engages kids and families
It’s useless to try to pinpoint the common theme of the dozens of animated projects that Netflix is working on: there isn’t one. This is the point. Unlike Disney, Pixar, and Illumination, Netflix doesn’t try to give children’s content a certain look or tone.
“We don’t do this on purpose. I asked myself the same question when I first came here. I thought: “We need a brand!”. This is all because I worked at Fox, Disney and DreamWorks. But then I realized that it’s not important to develop a brand because we serve such a wide audience,” says Melissa Cobb, vice president of content for children and families at Netflix.
Netflix is watched by a huge number of children, they are a serious engine of development for any streaming service.
60% of monthly Netflix viewers watch children’s programs. This explains why the company is investing so heavily in this area. According to Loup Ventures, Netflix will spend $1.1 billion on animation this year, or 11% of its annual budget.
This is how the company manages to keep its brand.
Look for content creators with different styles and perspectives

Netflix differs from the competition in that it hires different animators and directors and lets them do their thing. Cobb says they are doing it on purpose. Netflix aims to attract talent “who are confident in what they will do with the company.” This shows that they will do their job well. The main idea is not to come up with a brand, but to allow creators to create an extensive and diverse catalog of content.
Netflix’s pursuit of freedom sometimes means moving in a completely different direction. For example, Pinky Malinky creators Rikke Asbjorn and Chris Garbutt are working on an interactive show about a cat and a dog who wake up one day and find that all humans have disappeared.
They go in search of their friends, and viewers can choose for themselves whose adventures to follow – a cat or a dog.
Create content that the whole family will enjoy

If Netflix can interest a child from Cape Town and Minneapolis, the next question is: how does the company manage to get entire families of these children to watch something with them?
The answer is to create content that does more than just entertain children. Today, Netflix is pushing the boundaries and reaching a level of production that matches that of the leading animation studios. Glen Keane is directing Over the Moon, a musical in which a girl builds a rocket to fly to the moon and prove to her dad that the legendary Moon Goddess exists. Sergio Pablos is currently in Madrid directing a 2D film Klaus for the holiday season.
Pablos’ cartoon tells the “story of Santa Claus” – a cranky postman is sent to a Scandinavian town in the 1800s on a mission to start a postal service there.
The only thing is that the locals do not like each other and refuse to write letters, so the postman turns to the toy manufacturer and the children for help. “It’s a great, funny and touching story,” says Pablos.
Make Content Easily Accessible

The final challenge is showing kids all the content and getting them to watch it. Since 2011, Netflix has been hard at work making the interface clear and accessible, and neatly grouping content by genre and user preference. The company has even created a system where kids – who can’t read yet – can scroll through images of characters from different cartoons by hovering over a series or movie.
Now Netflix is experimenting with another way to keep kids interested. Now the company plans not only to show the character when the child hovers over the movie, but also to accompany the picture with a short video that explains what kind of character it is and what makes it special.
“We think it’s important to explain to kids who the character is. He’s funny? Interesting? What does he do? He’s a good friend?” says Cameron Johnson, Chief Innovation Officer.
Netflix will start testing the format later this year, though there’s no guarantee it will work. Still, Johnson says it’s a good indicator of “what direction the company is thinking.”
“Imagine that you are five years old again, you have a TV remote control in your hands, and you choose what to watch on Netflix. You wonder: “What can Netflix offer me?”

History
Fort Cobb was established as a US Army frontier post in Indian Territory on October 1, 1859, 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the city’s current location. The fort was named after Secretary of the Treasury Howell Cobb, a friend of the founding officer, Principal William Emory. The post was later occupied by both the Southern and Northern Forces during the Civil War, the Union took control of the fort in the 1862 Tonkawa Massacre.
Later Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer From December 18, 1868 to January 6, 1869, command was at Fort Cobb. Shortly thereafter, on March 12, 1869, the fort was abandoned in favor of a site 30 miles (48 km) south of the river. Wichita Mountains, and renamed Fort Sill. [6] [7]
The town of Fort Cobb was founded in 1899 as simply Cobb, and in 1902 it was renamed Fort Cobb in honor of a defunct military post. With statehood at 19In 07, 467 inhabitants lived in the city. Their number fell to 382 at the 1910 census but rose to 546 in 1920. The largest number of inhabitants was 827 in 1930, but soon began a sharp decline due to the Great Depression and World War II. Geography
Fort Cobb is located west of Caddo County Center at 35°5′58″N. 98°26′19″W / 35.09944°N 98.43861°W / 35.09944; -98.43861 (35.099581, -98.438498), [9] in the Washita River Valley. Oklahoma State Highway 9 runs through the city, leading east 15 miles (24 km) to Anadarko County, then west 11 miles (18 km) to Carnegie.
According to the US Census Bureau, Fort Cobb has a total area of 0.54 square miles (1.4 km 2 ), of which 0.01 square miles (0.02 km 2 ), or 1.57%, is water. Pop.

There were 317 housing units at an average density of 621.2 per square mile (240.0/ km2). The racial makeup of the city was 77.96%. White, 1.20% African American, 16.04% Native American, 0.45% from other races, and 4.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.25% of the population.
There were 270 households out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% were married couples, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families .
28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the city, the age distribution of the population is 28.9% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64 and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women, there were 86.8 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 74.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,625, and the median income for a family was $34,000. The median income for males was $26,786 compared to $18,854 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,085. About 12.5% of families and 17.6% of the population were below average. poverty line, including 20.6% of those under the age of 18 and 17.8% of those aged 65 and over.
