Sight Words for Second Grade

You might be wondering, what is a sight word? In general, Sight Words are words that cannot be sounded out phonetically and must be read by sight. For example, the word “cat” can be sounded out with individual letter sounds “c—a—t” and thus is not a sight word. However, words like “four” and “she” cannot be sounded out phonetically or broken apart into chunks. These words must be memorized through repetition and exposure, or memorized by sight. This is why they are called sight words.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the sight word rule, but this is a good starting point for understanding the purpose of sight words and the need for sight word memorization as an important building block on the road to reading. What are Second Grade Sight Words?

So, what are second-sight words and why are second-grade sight words so important? There are two widely accepted high-frequency sight word lists that are used by teachers and homeschooling parents all over the world. Dolch Sight Words, which is a word list compiled by Dr. Edward William Dolch includes 46 common sight words for second graders. Fry’s Sight Words, compiled by Dr. Edward Fry covers 100 sight words students should learn during grade 2. If you’re wondering which second-grade sight word list to use, you can read more about each sight word list here.

Sight Words your Second Graders Needs to Know:

Most commonly, we’ve seen the Dolch Sight Word second-grade list prevail as the accepted, grade-level specific list of sight words, however, many families and schools continue to use Fry’s 100 Sight Words Lists for kindergarten as well. As Fry’s second 100 words are suggested for second graders, some teachers and families will use the first hundred words listed as a review or for below-level learners. You might find that some school districts will use both, or a mixture compiled from each common sight word list.

It’s no secret that children often read badly just because they don’t understand
words that smart adult uncles use in the text. This raises two difficulties
– read the word itself, and it can be long, and secondly, understand what was read
and remember what it means.

For those kids who have not yet learned how to link letters into words and made

Words for reading should be given from what is already known
thesaurus (dictionary) of the child.

The child operates with words related to people:

mother, father, woman, grandfather (if he is still alive – if not,
then we exclude from the list), aunt, uncle, Vasya, Nastya, Sergey, Lena, Kolya – all names
parents, brothers and sisters.

Why does a preschooler forget letters. Learning to read in games

Why does a baby forget letters, although he learned them yesterday

Usually, a child easily memorizes some letters, and not so others. The role of an adult
in celebrating what his ward does not succeed in and giving additional
tasks.

Another important thing is regularity. Since for the child all learning is
frankly, cramming and repetition, then the process of classes should be such that
information was repeated at regular intervals.

Ebbinghaus (read more about this on Wikipedia) studied how quickly people forget

The program has a vocabulary of the present word 900 words and will pick up with ease
words with the necessary syllables (syllables).

Note

See if the child understands the meaning of the words. The dictionary in the program is selected
in a special way – so that all combinations of letters needed for training come across.
Therefore, the word may be unfamiliar. For example, the word SUKNO has been added to the dictionary
since this word includes the SU warehouse.

The Best Average Operating Hours for a Daycare

A daycare business usually needs to be open early and close a bit late to serve the families in the area effectively. But, there are average hours that you’ll see more often, and you can set your open to close hours for what is best for you. Just make sure you’re balancing what’s right for you with what your community needs so your business can thrive.

When you’re deciding on your hours of operation for a new childcare business, it’s a good idea to look at the best average open to close hours for a daycare and build your schedule around those. Typically, daycares are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

So there’s your starting point. From there, you need to look at what other needs there are for childcare hours in your area to see if there’s an opportunity for you to fill a gap in the supply chain.

Location Makes a Difference

The location of your daycare will help you to figure out what hours you need to be open. We already know that the best average open to close hours are 7 a.m to 6 p.m. during the week, but if the area around your daycare is full of businesses where people work really early, really late, or both, then you’ll probably want to think about doing some extended hours of operation to gain those families’ business.

Opening for Weekends

Some daycares will open for weekends. Let’s face it, not everyone gets to work Monday to Friday, 8-5 these days. In fact, there’s a growing trend in the workforce of people who work very irregular schedules or some kind of shift that rotates. According to The Economic Policy Institute, 17% of workers have these kinds of unstable schedules. It can make it hard for these families to find childcare when they’re at work.

You can choose to have open hours on the weekends if you want to. Most of the time, daycares that open on weekends will offer less open to close hours, but again, that’s up to you. Opening on weekends isn’t the norm either, so you may also want to charge a little more for those days.

Early Drop-Off or Late Pick-Up Options

Another thing you can do beyond the average operating hours is offer an early drop-off time and a late pick-up time. Daycares that do this usually charge a fee in addition to the normal hourly rate. 

There are plenty of people who have to be at work before many others do. There are also those that don’t get off of work until well after others. These people will likely be happy to pay a little more to not have to have someone else pick up their children and keep them during the hours that daycare isn’t available. You can provide a service for them that makes their lives simpler and less stressful by opening for extended hours.

24-Hour Daycare Centers

There are some daycare centers that are open around the clock. Just as we were saying before, not everyone works the same cookie-cutter hours. The days of nice, neat “banker’s hours” are gone. There are people working at all hours of the day and night.

That means there’s a need for childcare all hours of the day and night. Daycares that are open for 24 hours will certainly have some additional guidelines to follow. There are services that they have to provide that aren’t part of a typical daycare because of the nighttime hours.

The restrictions for how many hours a child can stay in daycare per day will still have to be followed, but the purpose of a 24-hr. daycare isn’t to care for a child for all hours anyway. These daycares provide a special service for parents who work odd hours that the average daycare isn’t open for.

Drop-In Daycare

Generally, a daycare will have specific drop-off and pick-up times. But as we mentioned already, there are a lot of parents who work irregular, unpredictable schedules. They may be on-call or have shifts that rotate.

For those with irregular work schedules, it’s helpful if there are slots available in your daycare for children who need to be dropped off on an as-needed basis. You have to remember that you can only have so many children of certain ages in your care at one time, based on how many caretakers are working. You need to adhere to those guidelines at all times.

You can designate some slots for these families though. Basically, they’ll work as a first-come, first-serve kind of deal. Once those slots are full, you just can’t take any more drop-in children. This is a really helpful service in areas that have a lot of shift work or hospitals with on-call staff.

Consider Your Staff

When you’re setting your open to close hours for your daycare center, don’t forget that you have to have the staff to operate your business accordingly. Your local governments set regulations that state how many children you can have in the care of one caretaker at a time.

If you’re planning to have a daycare center that is open for a lot of hours, then you need to have the staff to facilitate that. If you’re going to offer Monday through Friday care and also offer weekend care, you can’t do that by yourself. You also can’t expect any employees to work every day either.

Remember that when you’re deciding on your hours, that decision has to be made simultaneously with your staffing decisions. You can’t be open for extended hours without the staff to sustain that. And you can’t have a large number of staff members without opening for enough hours to sustain them.

Let the Community Know What You Offer

One thing that happens to a lot of daycares is they notice they’re not getting the level of enrollment that they thought they would. Many times, this is because the families in the community aren’t aware of what the hours are that are being offered at your daycare center.

You are well aware of what open slots you have to take in more kids. However, the public does not know that if you don’t tell them. Find ways to get the word out about any extended hours you offer. Let people know that you operate on the weekends if you do. And certainly, make sure to advertise your drop-in policy if you decide to offer one.

Include the Best Average

We suggest that you definitely include the best average open to close hours for a daycare in your business plan. Beyond the average hours of 7 a.m to 6 p.m. though, you can tailor your operating times to what is needed in your community. You certainly need to consider what you and your family want too, but a business that is successful is supplying something that is in demand. That’s how it gets to that point. – Kindergartens will work in the mode of duty groups, as it was before, when non-working days were announced. This week, each institution will analyze the need for such groups for children whose parents will work. Where groups will be open, educators will have to go to work, but there are kindergartens where there are no such children, educators will rest there,” Svetlana Platonova specified.

So far there is no complete certainty about schools. All-Russian verification work and the defense of projects for schoolchildren should be completed before the May holidays. Now parents are worried about the fate of the trial OGE for ninth graders, scheduled for May 6th.

– Federal events are to be decided this week: if those dates fall and the feds decide to hold them, the events will be held. But we will understand this this week, because there is no decision yet,” the press secretary of the Ministry of Education explained. – Local events will be rescheduled. 10 Beginning of the Year Activities for Kindergarten – Kindergarten Korner

Whether you are a new kindergarten teacher or a seasoned veteran, the beginning of the year planning can be stressful.  I hope that this post can provide some fresh ideas to help you survive the first day of school and the entire first month!  Here are 10 beginning of the year activities for Kindergarten…

1.

  Kindergarten Bear Hunt

“We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” has become an annual tradition in my Kindergarten.  I turned the traditional school tour into a fun and interactive scavenger hunt that makes the first day of kindergarten (or first week) one to remember!  My Bear Hunt activity helps to acquaint your kids with the building layout as they meet familiar faces they will see throughout the year.  Clues for finding the missing teddy bears lead students from one teacher or staff member to the next with the final clue leading them to the playground.

2.  Kick Off to Kindergarten Bulletin Board

Next on the list of beginning of the year activities for Kindergarten is this  Football themed craft and bulletin board.  A parent letter is included for students to color a football player at home.  At school, they cut out the football and write their names on the line.  They tell me their goals for kicking off a great year, and I write their words to complete the sentence.

3.  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

The second full week of kindergarten is our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Week.  The story fits well with letter identification.  I read the story, and we dance to the song on YouTube.  I use my editable Chicka Chicka Boom Boom resource to create a page for each student.  This activity focuses on name writing, identifying the letters in our names, and number writing.  Lettering is included for you to display the pages as a first bulletin board of the year.  When you take the pages down, you may use the included book cover to create your first class book!

4.  We Put the Kind in Kindergarten

Next on the list is a kindness SEL activity.  Kindness is our theme all year long in kindergarten.  We Put the Kind in KINDergarten is the perfect read-aloud for the beginning of the year.  It provides examples of how students can show kindness in the classroom.  As a class, we come up with a list of ideas of ways to be kind in kindergarten.  

Students then get a heart to practice cutting and name writing.  You can use only the outside heart if you do this early in the year.  If you do include the writing flip craft, you would ask the students for their responses and write it for them. 

Bulletin board lettering is included for this resource as well.  I leave this lettering up all year in my classroom!

5.  Kindergarten Writing Portfolios

Another resource I use during the first week is my Kindergarten Writing Portfolios.  I prep the portfolios before school begins by simply printing and double stapling into books, which contain one page for each month of school.

Writing Portfolios may just be my favorite writing activity we do all year because the progression you will see is truly amazing!  At the beginning of the year, you will have the kids complete the first page independently.   Keep in mind that the majority of your kindergarten students are not able to write words or sentences in August.  I tell the kids that the first step of writing is to let their pictures tell the story.  By the end of the year, they will be filling up pages with sentences.   Read about the portfolios HERE.

6.  All About Me Books

I designed these All About Me books for emerging writers at the beginning of Kindergarten.  Students complete the pages writing simple words such as their name and color words.  They also write numbers to complete the sentences.  The books make the perfect first keepsake of the year!

7.  Handwriting and Alphabet Books

Throughout the first month (and the entire year), we work on proper letter formation and handwriting.  Typically, I introduce one letter a day using our Alphabet Books.

I also use these Handwriting Books for additional practice.  My customers have used this resource in a variety of ways including morning work, writing centers, and even homework.   I laminate the pages on card stock and use them as a Write and Wipe Writing Center all year long.  My kids can never have enough handwriting practice!

8.  September Math Journals

Just as we introduce letter writing, number writing is equally important.  Beginning of the year math activities focus on a lot of hands-on investigations exploring math manipulatives and these Beginning of the Year Math Journals.  Students are introduced to number formation and number sense activities by completing one or two pages each day.

9.  Play-Doh Mat Centers

Early in the school year, it is important to Keep Centers Simple!  I like to give my students activities they can work on independently while I call students to my teacher table to complete baseline assessments.  I love using Alphabet Play-Doh Mats as well as Number Play-Doh Mats.  These are great for working on letter and number formation as well as those oh so important fine motor skills.

10.  Beginning of the Year Assessments

Last on the list of beginning of the year activities for kindergarten is ASSESSMENTS!  Administering baseline assessments at the beginning of the year is important for determining groups for differentiated instruction and for providing a snapshot of each student’s strengths and areas for improvement.  I created my Kindergarten Assessments Binder as a grab-and-go resource for assessing my students all year long.  In August or September, I pull the assessments I need from the binder.  This usually includes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and number identification.

After screening academic skills, I also like to assess my students’ fine motor skills at the beginning of kindergarten.  I created this Fine Motor Assessments tool to do just that!

Throughout the first few weeks, I have students write their names and numbers.  They also complete assessments on cutting, copying shapes, coloring, and tracing.   You can use these assessments during different data points throughout the year to track progress.

Explanatory note.

One of the main tasks of preschool education is to prepare children for schooling. Entering school is, first of all, the child’s transition to a qualitatively new stage in his development. Now the main type of his activity is educational activity, while in the kindergarten play dominated. However, this transition cannot happen by the wave of a magic wand. Some time must pass before the child realizes himself as a schoolboy.

And my main task, as a first grade teacher, is to provide specific preschool methods and forms of organization of children’s lives at the first stages of education. In other words, play activities should be present from the first days of the child in the first grade. It is necessary that it gradually and naturally give way to the leading place in educational activity. Since going to school is always stressful for kids, I would like to set up future first graders in advance for a positive perception of learning in the first grade.

It is for this reason that we organized a joint event for 4th grade students and toddlers from the kindergarten preparatory group.

Thus, if a child learns to play in kindergarten, masters the forms of communication and interaction with peers and adults, acquires the ability to control his emotions and imagination, he will go to school painlessly. To ensure all this, a system of measures is needed for joint work on continuity at the levels of preschool and primary education “Kindergarten – Primary School”, and this is only the first step towards the implementation of this program.

Before this event, the goals were set:

1. The development of curiosity among preschoolers as the basis of the cognitive activity of the future student (cognitive activity is not only a necessary component of educational activity, but also ensures his interest in learning, voluntary behavior and the formation of other important qualities of the child’s personality ).

2. Formation of creative imagination in children.

3. Development of communication skills – the ability to communicate with adults and peers.

4. Show preschoolers the importance of knowledge acquired in kindergarten.

5. To form a desire to acquire new knowledge.

6. To form a positive attitude towards the school, towards the learning process.

7. Cultivate a respectful attitude towards older comrades, towards adults.

Meet Jennifer Hollandsworth, Our Center Director

Meet Jennifer Hollandsworth! She is the Center Director at Belmont Shore KinderCare in Long Beach, CA. Jennifer attended California State University Sacramento where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree, and Concordia University where she earned a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Early Education. Jennifer has also earned her Teaching Credential from California State University San Francisco. She joined KinderCare this year, and before that she was a program specialist. Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys gardening, traveling, creating art, going to museums, and spending time with her family. Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Kindergarten Programs (5–6 Years)

Welcome to kindergarten: the gateway to grade school and everything that
comes next! Offered in select centers, our kindergarten programs have small
class sizes and curriculums that mix learning and fun.  The basic building
blocks of reading, writing, math, and science are key in kindergarten, so we
make sure they get lots of practice in all of these areas.

Interactive Kindergarten (5–6 Years)

Kindergarten is a critical year for young learners. Experienced KinderCare teachers will
tap into your child’s natural curiosity to help get them even more prepared for
elementary school. Our engaging lessons make the most of current technology while
offering plenty of hands-on play and exploration.

Participating Child Care Aware Center

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child
Development Center on the installation is not available.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

Spanish

Spanish Adventures provides young learners with a foundation for later success with
the Spanish language. Music, games, children’s Spanish literature, and other tools give
children multiple opportunities to hear, practice, and see Spanish language to develop
vocabulary and conversation skills. Curriculum includes lessons on greetings, numbers,
colors, animals, family, body parts, and pets, as well as how to engage conversationally
during common scenarios at home, a restaurant, or at the zoo.

Do you support alternative diets?

We strive to be as inclusive as possible. To that point, we provide a vegetarian option at mealtime, take care to not serve common allergens and can adapt menus based on your child’s food sensitivities. If your child has additional needs, we’ll work with you to figure out a plan.

Are meals included in tuition? Can I choose to send my child with lunch?

We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing bodies and minds. If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.

Does my child need to be potty-trained?

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

Over the five years of motherhood, I have tried different beach attributes and now I know exactly what things will help you spend time at sea as comfortably as possible, and which ones will just take up space in your bag in vain.

I share my experience in this article – save it to re-read before the holidays.

How to choose a swimsuit

A swimsuit or swimming trunks is the main thing you need on the beach. My daughters are growing up fast and I buy them new swimwear every year. Here’s what I recommend paying attention to in order to choose a good kit the first time.

Swimming trunks model. If you are going to relax on a sandy beach, look for a high-waisted bottom with a wide gusset. Sand will be everywhere, but the tighter the panties fit, the cleaner the butt will be.

For babies, there are diaper panties in which you can bathe: they do not let liquid through either from the inside or from the outside. It is convenient to use such swimming trunks in indoor pools, but I do not recommend taking them to the hot sea coast: the child’s skin quickly rots and turns red under several layers of waterproof materials.

When my kids weren’t potty trained, instead of swimming diapers, I took three pairs of ordinary cloth swimming trunks with me. This was enough for 2-3 hours on the beach.

How do I save on baby diapers

I have never bought swim trunks for boys, but I guess that boxers will protect against sand better: they are usually higher than panties and fit tighter than wide shorts with mesh inside.

You should also pay attention to the type of straps and their fastening. To keep the swimsuit well, choose adjustable straps – they are easy to tighten if they start to slip off the shoulders – or a strap through the neck.

It is better to abandon the ties in favor of the clasp: the knot gradually loosens and the leotard begins to fall off.

I ordered this swimsuit online, and it didn’t fit my daughter: the straps were too long, and the top was too wide. I don’t recommend buying without trying on models that cannot be adjusted. But this model completely suited me: the shoulder strap is adjustable in length, and the swimsuit is held on the back by a strong fastener. Such a swimsuit cost me 650 R

Sun protection. My children have dark skin, so I calmly buy separate swimsuits for them: sunscreen is enough to avoid burns. But I recommend parents of white-skinned children to pay attention to the most closed swimwear in order to protect the kids from the bright sun.

In addition to one-piece swimsuits that cover only the stomach and back, there are bathing suits for children with sleeves and legs. My friend buys these for her son. She said that the suit dries a little longer than regular swimming trunks, but the child does not burn, and sand almost does not get inside.

It is not hot for a child in such a suit: the material passes air well and removes sweat. The only negative is that it is inconvenient to go to the toilet in a suit: you have to pull it off almost completely.

Choose a headgear that fits snugly on your baby’s head and dries quickly. This is necessary so that the child does not want to pull off the wet lump from the head all the time. For children under three years old, I recommend wide-brimmed cotton panama hats: they protect not only the top of the head, but also the eyes and shoulders from the sun’s rays.

When a child grows up, he begins to splash more actively in the water, learns to swim and dive. Therefore, for children from the age of three, I recommend replacing the panama hat with a scarf with an elastic band: it keeps tightly on the head, does not fall off while swimming and dries quickly – you don’t need to take it off after leaving the water.

A baseball cap with a wide brim is also a great option for the beach. The main thing is that she should sit tightly on her head and not be blown away by the wind.

In addition to the model of the headgear, pay attention to the material from which it is made. Despite the fact that synthetics dry faster, it is better to choose natural fabrics: they wick sweat away from the child’s head well and prevent the head from overheating.

There should also be ties on the panama hat. If the headgear is not fixed with anything, it will be easily blown away by the wind. Our panama hat cost 350 R. In resort towns, headscarves are sold at every step for ridiculous money – from 100 R. This scarf was sewn to order for us for 200 R. How to choose beach shoes

The choice of shoes is a very individual matter. Children, like adults, differ in the width and rise of the leg, as well as ideas about convenience: someone likes flip-flops with fastening between the fingers, and someone they rub the skin after just a few meters. For myself, I have compiled a small list of questions that help you quickly decide on a purchase.

Are the shoes easy to clean? We rest on a sandy beach, the children come out completely in the sand, but before returning home, we wash our feet with a tap on the beach or just in the sea. Putting on sandals on wet feet is very inconvenient, it is easier to wash your feet already in shoes.

Are there glued elements. I try to choose shoes without them: with frequent contact with water, such sandals will quickly fall apart.

Is the heel fixed. Shoes with a back do not fly off your feet. In such sandals, children fall and stumble less often.

The most popular beach shoe option that fits all parameters is, of course, Crocs clogs and sandals. The average price of popular models of this company is 1500 R, and for two children you need to spend from 3000 R. In my opinion, this is expensive for shoes for one season. Therefore, I buy cheaper analogues.

I bought blue sandals for 800 R, and purple ones for 716 R. My daughters have been wearing them for three months, and during this time nothing happened to them. I’m sure they will last the remaining month of the bathing season

Which sunscreen is suitable for children

Sunscreen should be used by both children and adults if the sun is strong enough. To determine this, you should not rely only on your feelings. It is better to compare them with the value of the UV index in the region where you are now.

The general rule is that sunscreen is needed if the UV index is greater than 3. You can check this in any weather app or website, but if you are going to a hot seaside region, prepare for high values ​​in advance.

To choose the right cream, you need to pay attention to several parameters.

SPF. This is a UV protection factor. The higher the indicator, the more reliably the skin is protected. For children, doctors recommend using a cream with an SPF of 50 or more.

Filters. This is the name of the components of the cream that help protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation. They are physical and chemical. Chemical ones only absorb radiation, while physical ones both absorb and reflect. It is more reliable when the cream contains both types of filters.

You can find out which filters the cream contains from the composition on the back of the jar or on the manufacturer’s website. To sort through a long list of Latin words, I use special tables. How to protect yourself from the sun

Waterproof. If the cream is not waterproof, it must be reapplied after each bath. This is inconvenient and uneconomical. Waterproof product can withstand several visits to the water. In my experience, one application is enough for two active baths.

Product safety. Fragrances and certain other ingredients in sunscreen may cause skin irritation and allergies. When choosing a cream for children, it is better to carefully study the composition and avoid products with benzophenones, cinnamates, dibenzoylmethanes, PABA and derivatives. In the instructions, they may be hidden behind the following words: Benzophenones, Oxybenzone, Octyl methoxycinnamate, Octocrylene, Dibenzoylmethanes, Avobenzone, Padimate O, Roxadimate.

For children under three years old, it is better to choose a cream labeled “suitable from birth” or “0+”. Its composition should not contain components that can damage the skin of a newborn. But just in case, before applying a new cream, I recommend checking the body’s reaction to it – apply the product on a small area of ​​​​skin and wait a bit. If the skin turns red, the cream should be washed off, and another remedy should be taken to the beach.

Getting ready for a vacation with a baby

Packaging. Sunscreens are available in different formats: in the form of the actual cream, spray or stick.

I prefer tubes: they are more economical. We only need 250 ml of spray for two weeks of daily use, and a cream in a tube of the same volume lasts twice as long – we have to buy a new one every 3-4 weeks.

I have not tried sunscreens in the form of a stick: they are rare in stores.

Our family favorite is La Roche-Posay cream. I haven’t cheated on him for many years. Its price varies from 1300 to 1800 R in different stores

To protect children from sunburn, it is not enough to buy a good cream – you also need to use it correctly. Here are some tips to help you avoid getting burned.

Read the instructions for use carefully. Some products need to be applied to the skin 15-20 minutes before sun exposure. If you use it directly on the beach, the child may burn before the cream begins to work.

Convenient if the cream can be applied to wet skin: no need to force the child to sit on the beach until it is completely dry when it’s time to reapply the product.

Keep track of the time. The time of effective action of the cream in the open sun is indicated in the instructions and usually varies from two to six hours. If you spend several hours in the sun, I still recommend that you do not wait until the last, but renew the cream more often: the product clogs into skin folds and is washed off later, which means that its effectiveness gradually decreases.

How to choose insurance

If the child spends a lot of time in water or sand, the cream should be reapplied every 30-40 minutes. You can notice that the cream has washed off by the drops of water on the skin. Usually, the products repel water, so the drops seem to gather together, and when this effect disappears, it means that the cream is no longer on the body.

Do not use last year’s product. Sunscreens typically last 6 to 12 months after opening. If more time has passed, the cream may simply become ineffective.

Should I buy sunglasses for my child? To be honest, at first I didn’t bother with sunglasses: it seemed to me that the panama hat had enough margins to make the child comfortable. But after some time, she noticed that her daughter was grimacing, despite the headdress. This alarmed me.

The concern turned out to be justified: according to WHO, strong exposure to sunlight threatens to burn the retina and cornea of ​​the eye, and an excess of ultraviolet radiation can cause the development of melanoma and cataracts of the eye. To protect the child, I decided to choose the most reliable sunglasses.

How to choose glasses for your baby

Here are the criteria I used.

UV protection level. UV400 labeled goggles provide maximum eye protection: they block 100% of ultraviolet rays. The marking is usually found on the headband of the glasses or in the certificate of conformity – the seller in the store must provide it at the request of the buyer.

Lens light transmission. According to this parameter, the lenses are divided into four categories – from the first to the fourth. Filter 1 passes from 80 to 43% of the light, and 4 – only up to 8%. I choose the darkest lenses for my daughters.

Eye safety. Be sure to try on children’s glasses before buying. This will make sure that the lens does not distort the perception of space and only darkens, but does not change the colors of the surrounding world. If this is not the case, the eyes may get tired and hurt.

Vandal resistant temples. The best option for kids is glasses with soft bending temples: they are more difficult to break.

My choice fell on Babiators glasses. I liked them externally and in terms of characteristics, and I was also bribed by a one-year warranty against loss and breakage. I bought them three years ago for 1200 R, last year for 1400 R. At first, it was not easy to persuade the eldest daughter to wear glasses: she was frightened by an unfamiliar accessory. Then I said that in glasses she would be as fashionable as mom and dad. The trick worked, and now the daughter does not go out at all without them in the sun.

It is also better not to take off your sunglasses in the shade: sunlight reflects off sand and water and can still damage your eyes.

What will help your child get comfortable in the water

The ability to stay on the water is a skill that requires practice. To introduce this to children who do not yet know how to swim, you will need accessories for swimming.

It can be difficult to know what to buy in a store. In addition to the usual circles and armlets, you can find many other things on the shelves: boards, vests, noodles, mattresses, and even mermaid tails. We tried many different devices, but in the end I came to the following conclusion: swimming aids should be safe and comfortable for the child and convenient for parents, that is, they should fit in a bag and not require too much fiddling with them on the beach. I’ll tell you about the boats that I especially liked.

Circle with holes for legs. Suitable if the child is between six months and two years old. The kid is well fixed inside the circle, does not run the risk of slipping down and swallowing water, even if he still does not know how to properly hold on to the inflatable bumpers.

An inflatable vest or a regular circle. From the age of two, a circle can replace an inflatable vest. In it, the child will be able to understand how to stay on the water. But it is more convenient for us to use a regular circle: it is faster and easier to put on a child.

Circles vary in diameter. Before buying, it is better to try on the circle: this will help make sure that it does not put pressure on the body, the child is comfortable in it, and that it tightly wraps around the baby’s body to prevent it from slipping out. I also recommend paying attention to the seams: they should not be prickly and sharp so as not to injure the skin.

Sleeves are suitable for children who are actively learning to swim: unlike a circle, they do not hinder the movements of the arms and legs, but keep the child above the water.

They also come in different sizes, so I advise you to try them on when buying.

Daughter quickly learned to swim with the sleeves. We bought them for 200 R in a chain store

Goggles or diving mask. If the child has mastered the water and swims without support, offer him a new entertainment – exploring the seabed. Goggles or a diving mask will help with this. I noticed that it is psychologically easier for a daughter to put her face into the water when there is some kind of protection in front of her eyes.

But the snorkel and fins did not take root with us. It takes skill to use the tube. In my opinion, it is more suitable for older children who can stay on the water for a long time and control their breathing. The children simply did not like the fins, but I did not insist: they are too bulky and it would be inconvenient to wear them to the beach every day.

We have the most ordinary Intex glasses, they cost 150 R

I do not recommend buying some accessories: in my opinion, they are unsafe. Here’s what I think is better to give up:

• swimming boards. It is convenient to swim with them only in perfect calm, and the rest of the time, children often turn over;
• air mattresses. The wind can quickly blow them out to sea or turn them over at depth. I recommend using this device only with adults;
• inflatable animals. They are very unstable, easily roll over and cover children.

It happens that a child is afraid to go into the water, despite the bright circles and assurances of parents that it is safe. I myself encountered this: while the eldest daughter was actively splashing in the sea, the youngest was sitting on the shore and agreed to touch only the water that I brought her in a bucket.

It was exhausting, so I decided to use a trick that my grandmother used to do. At first, I took my daughter in my arms and said that we would just watch how other children bathe. So for the first time we went into the water together. This excited my daughter, but I managed to convince her that we really won’t swim: this is important so as not to aggravate fear and not undermine the child’s trust.

The next time, the daughter was calmer and we went a little deeper so that her heels were in the water. To cope with fear, I suggested that my daughter dangle her legs to make splashes. This cheered her up. At each visit, I offered her to dip a little more than the last time. After the heels, the daughter agreed to go in knee-deep, then waist-deep, and then I managed to put her on her stomach and show her how to row. It took one day for everything. This was enough to overcome the child’s fear of water without stress and unnecessary worries.

What else is useful on vacation

In addition to the most necessary things, I take a few more things to the beach for a comfortable stay with children.

Bedding. To sit comfortably on the sand, we use thin blankets. It is better to choose a natural fabric: it easily absorbs water and dries quickly. I didn’t like waterproof options: I constantly have to sit on a wet surface.

One large blanket is enough for our family of four. Children only sit on it, and my husband and I take turns sunbathing.

We did not like the mats: the texture is too rough and leaves marks on the skin. The mats that fold into the purse were also uncomfortable. Toys. At first, I took with me as many different toys as possible so that my daughters would not be bored, but then I was convinced: more does not mean better. Children play with two or three toys from the whole variety, and carrying a whole trunk with plastic molds is heavy and inconvenient.

Now I take one bucket with me and some toys that fit in it. Usually this is a spatula, a rake, a couple of molds and a watering can.

A very cool team, all those with whom I managed to work were as friendly, open, and helpful as possible. People are the main reason why I did not want to leave the company and why I wanted (and still want to!) To return back as soon as possible.

Vocabulary Activities for First Grade

First grade vocabulary activities mostly focus on kids hearing new vocabulary words or using them properly when speaking.

Vocabulary Password

Use one vocabulary word each week or each day as the spoken password kids need to use in a sentence to gain entry to something. At school they might need to tell you their sentence to enter the classroom in the morning. At home they might need to tell you their sentence before they can play a video game.

We increase the child’s vocabulary: the norm for children of different ages

A person’s vocabulary (lexicon) is a set of words that he actively uses. The richer the vocabulary, the more competent and beautiful the speech will be. The ability to correctly express your thoughts helps in communication, at work or in school. That is why parents are so worried that the baby’s vocabulary is constantly replenished, starting from a very early age.

What is the vocabulary of children

Vocabulary can be active or passive. An active lexicon is a set of words that a small person actively uses in life. Passive vocabulary is those words and expressions, the meaning of which the child understands, but almost never uses.

For example, a mother shows pictures of animals to a one-year-old child: “This is a dog, this is a cat, this is a horse. ” The kid knows the names of animals, but these words remain in his passive vocabulary, since he still cannot say them himself. When the baby can name which animal is shown in the picture, the word from the passive lexicon goes into the active vocabulary. The vocabulary of passive words is always larger, and this does not only apply to children. Many adults understand the meaning of the words “not at all”, “catharsis”, “frustration”, but do not use them in their speech. So children expand the passive vocabulary, which they may use in the future.

Vocabulary norms for different ages

Each child develops individually, but there are average indicators by which parents can navigate:

• one-year-old child – up to 10 words;
• 1.5 years – from 20 to 40 words;
• 2 years – from 50 to 200 words;
• 3 years – up to 1000 words;
• 4 years – 1500-1900;
• 5 years – about 1100-1200;
• 6 years – 3200-3500 words.

When a baby starts talking actively, his vocabulary is rapidly replenished with new words. Every year it increases, and by the age of 6-7 years the lexicon can be more than 3000 words.

How to find out the number of words in a child’s vocabulary

Parents are often at a loss not knowing how to count the passive words in their baby’s vocabulary. Show the baby a picture of animals, plants, trees, food, people. Ask the kid to show, for example, a bear, a pear, a doctor. If the child correctly shows what you are asking for, then this word is in the passive dictionary.

The active dictionary can contain not only understandable names, but also onomatopoeia: “ko-ko”, “woof-woof”, “meow-meow”, “beep”, etc. The active dictionary can also include:

• distorted names: “baka” instead of “dog”, “tyaka” instead of “tractor”, etc.;
• incorrect words: “deduka” instead of “grandfather”, “visiped” instead of “bicycle”;
• is a phrase that has several meanings at once: “ma” is both mom, and pasta, and marmalade.

Developing vocabulary in babies

From an early age, parents need to make efforts so that the child’s vocabulary is constantly replenished with new names and concepts. What can be done for this?

1. Read books. With the help of stories and fairy tales, we expand the horizons of the baby, teach to perceive new information, fantasize and dream. For example, a child can see a live toucan or giraffe only at the zoo, but with the help of a book he will get to know new animals, birds, and learn a lot of interesting things about them. For young children, buy books with bright, colorful illustrations. You can purchase publications with tactile pictures that the baby can touch with his fingers. Educational games

A child learns about the world through games. How can you expand your vocabulary through games?

1. “Edible-inedible”. Game for children from 3 years old. The host (or mother) throws the ball to the child and names the object. If it can be eaten, the baby catches the ball, if the item is inedible, the ball does not need to be caught. You can change the conditions of the game, for example, the participant must catch the ball if the leader calls something soft.
2. “Who is more.” A good game to play, for example, in line or on the way to kindergarten. We come up with a category of words, for example, pets. We call pets in turn: a dog, a cat, a cockerel, a chicken, a cow, etc. The winner is the one who remembers more pets. By the way, in this game, mom can give in a little so that the baby feels like a real winner.
3. “Children’s crocodile”. The child chooses some thing or toy, but does not tell the rest of the participants what he has chosen. Then the kid must describe in words the chosen thing, but you can’t name it. Then the players change places.
4. “Choosing antonyms”. You tell the child a word, and he must choose an antonym: night-day, sun-moon, sky-earth, evil-kind, crying-laughing, etc.
5. “Truth or fiction?”. You offer the kid fictional or real statements, and his task is to agree with you or find errors. For example, a dog is bigger than an elephant, chickens eat semolina, a dog likes a bone, etc.

The task of parents is to help their son or daughter develop competent, rich speech. To do this, you need to constantly talk with the child, replenish his vocabulary, read books, offer educational games. The more you engage in speech development with your child, the easier it will be for him to learn, work and express his thoughts in the future.

9 months. The child actively communicates with the help of gestures, happily plays “patty”.

10 months. At this stage, the baby uses at least 1-2 “babble words” (such as lala, baba) in communication that are understandable in a particular situation.

11 months. Uses already at least 3 “babble words” that are understandable in a particular situation.

1 year. By this time, a normally developing child already uses 3-4 “babble words”, understands individual words, correlates them with specific objects. Understands simple instructions accompanied by gestures (“kiss mom”, “where’s dad?”, “give me a pen”, “no”).

1-2 years

1 year 3 months. Vocabulary increases by 8-15 words, the child understands a simple instruction without a gesture, shows familiar words in the picture.

1 year 6 months. Vocabulary is increasing. A simple agrammatic phrase without prepositions is available. Summarizes objects according to the essential features of understood speech. Names objects and actions at the moment of strong interest.

1 year 9 months. Shows three parts of the body, uses a two-word phrase (“Mom, di!” – “Mom, go!”, “Dai lala” – “Give the doll”). Vocabulary passive up to 200 words, active 50 words.

2 years

2 years. The grammatical side of speech is being actively formed. Dictionary 250-300 words. At this stage, a healthy child shows five parts of the body, has a vocabulary of at least 50 words. The kid understands and correctly follows the two-step instruction (“go to the kitchen and bring a cup”), right, uses the pronouns I, you, me, builds sentences from two words. By the age of two, the child already learns the sounds: p, b, m, f, c, t, d, n, k, g, x. Whistling sounds (s, s, c), hissing (w, w, h, u) and sonorous (p, l) he usually skips or replaces. During the game, he uses words and two-word sentences to indicate his actions (commenting speech).

2 years 6 months. Speaks in long sentences (more than three words). Questions arise: where? Where? Selects geometric shapes according to the sample; various objects of four primary colors (to the background of the object). The game has a plot character, the child reflects the relationship and sequence of actions (2-3). Independently makes simple plot buildings and names them.

3 years. All types of grammatical structures have been mastered, errors in the use of complex prepositions (because of, from under) are acceptable. Vocabulary 800 – 1000 words, uses sentences of five to eight words, mastered the plural of nouns and verbs. Egocentric speech is actively formed. The child says his name, gender and age; understands the meaning of simple prepositions – performs tasks such as “put the cube under the cup”, “put the cube in the box”, uses simple prepositions and conjunctions in the sentence because, if, when. The kid understands the short stories and fairy tales read with and without pictures, can evaluate his own and others’ pronunciation, asks questions when? Why?

4 years. Children of four use a more complicated and common phrase. Speech becomes more coherent and consistent. Vocabulary 1500-2000 words, including words denoting temporal and spatial concepts. The number of abbreviations, permutations, omissions decreases, words formed by analogy appear (scraped – scratched). The ability to perceive and pronounce sounds is improved: the softened pronunciation of consonants disappears; the replacement of hissing and whistling sounds disappears. The pronunciation of individual sounds in some children may not yet be formed: hissing sounds are not pronounced clearly enough; do not know how to pronounce R, L.

5 years. By the age of five, a child’s vocabulary increases to 2500-3000. He actively uses generalizing words (“clothing”, “vegetables”, “animals”, etc. ), names a wide range of objects and phenomena of the surrounding reality. In words, there are no longer gaps, permutations of sounds and syllables; the only exceptions are some difficult unfamiliar words (excavator). All parts of speech are used in the sentence. The child masters all the sounds of the native language and uses them correctly in speech.

In the period from 5 to 7 years the child’s vocabulary increases to 3500 words, it actively accumulates figurative words and expressions, stable phrases (neither light nor dawn; in a hurry, etc.) Grammar rules for changing words and combining them in a sentence are assimilated. During this period, the child actively observes the phenomena of the language: he tries to explain words based on their meaning, reflects on the gender of nouns. Thus, language and speech attention, memory, logical thinking and other psychological prerequisites are developed that are necessary for the further development of the child, his successful schooling.

No teen or young adult wants to go through this situation, but it still happens to thousands every year. You might feel paralyzed by feelings of fear, embarrassment, or shame. However, the longer you put it off, the more difficult the situation can become. Here is some simple advice to help you tell your parents about your pregnancy. Confirm the Results

The first thing you should do is to make sure you’re actually pregnant. While this may sound like a no-brainer, there are many factors that go into taking a pregnancy test accurately. If you have not yet medically confirmed your pregnancy, come to Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center for a free ultrasound before making any decisions. All services are free and there are no age restrictions. You’re welcome to bring a friend or a relative with you if you’re unsure about telling your parents before the pregnancy is confirmed.

Sooner is Better

Telling your parents you’re pregnant early on is almost always better. The longer you wait to tell your parents about your pregnancy, the more complications and difficulties can arise. Often, waiting to tell your family causes you more stress and anticipation — which is exactly what you don’t want in early pregnancy. Besides, in many cases, the reaction you imagine is much worse than the reaction you will actually get. It’s best to tell your parents soon and start working out your next steps.

Telling Others First Can Make it Easier

If you’re worried about how your parents will react, you can choose to confide in someone else first. Telling a sibling, relative, or close friend can be a good way to “test the waters” and gauge how your parents may react. Knowing you have that person’s support may give you the extra courage you need. It can also help relieve some of the stress and anxiety of keeping a huge secret, making the telling itself easier to do.

Make Sure They’re Prepared

Obviously, very few parents are ready to hear that their child is pregnant unexpectedly. But you can soften the impact by making sure they hear the news in a comfortable setting. Don’t blurt it out in passing or while you’re in a public place, and don’t tell them in anger or out of fear. Think through what you want to say and give them a heads up that you want to sit down and talk.

Make Sure You’re Prepared

Take some time beforehand to think through what you want to say. Something that may be helpful is to write down everything you’re thinking and feeling. That way, when the time comes to have the conversation, you will have a list of all of the thoughts and feelings you want to express in front of you, and won’t be as stressed about what you’re going to say.

Anticipate and Accept Their Feelings

It’s likely that your parents will be angry, disappointed, or confused by the news. This isn’t ideal for you, but it is expected. Remember, your parents are people, too, with their own plans and goals. Plus, you’ll be getting their immediate “knee-jerk” reaction; they haven’t had time to process the news like you’ve had. They might even say something that is mean or hurtful — and so might you. But it’s important not to let this conversation become an argument. Give them time to process their thoughts and emotions, and give them grace — and hopefully they’ll extend grace to you in return. You’re all in this together, and you need to support and respect each other throughout the journey.

Don’t Make Any Decisions Yet

Your parents might start talking about getting an abortion or placing the baby for adoption when you tell them. However, it’s important not to make any decisions right away. Time is your friend. Make sure everyone is calm and composed before talking about your options and discussing what you actually want. Furthermore, remember that no one — not even your parents — can make these decisions for you. If you aren’t comfortable with their choices or reasoning, don’t let them pressure you.

In a time like this, you might be surprised by how well your parents take the news. On the other hand, not all parents will react the same way, and there is always a chance that your parents might react poorly. Announcing your pregnancy

One of the most exciting times in your pregnancy is getting that first positive test. You probably want to tell the whole world you’re expecting. But when is the best time to announce your pregnancy?

Many parents-to-be wait until the end of the first trimester — around week 13 — to tell friends and family about their pregnancy. A number of factors influence why people wait until this time to share the news.

Still, the most important part of your decision should revolve around what makes you the most comfortable. Read on to find out more about what to consider before you decide to announce your pregnancy.

The risk of miscarriage

The first trimester is a tremendous time of development and change for you and your little one. With all that change comes some risk that the pregnancy might not carry to term.

Between 10 and 25 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and roughly 80 percent of these miscarriages occur in the first trimester.

Most miscarriages are caused by factors beyond a mother’s control. About half are caused by chromosomal abnormalities. This means that the baby doesn’t develop properly.

Other causes of first trimester miscarriage include:

• illness in mother
• luteal phase defect (problem with a woman’s monthly cycle)
• hormone imbalances
• adhesions (scar-like tissue) in uterus

Age is another factor that affects miscarriage. Here is the miscarriage risk by age:

• Women ages 35 and under: 15 percent
• Women ages 35 to 45: 20 to 35 percent
• Women ages 45 and older: 50 percent

If a developing baby lives to 7 weeks with a heartbeat, the risk of miscarriage drops to 10 percent. In those beginning weeks when the risk is highest, you may not even know you’re pregnant unless you’ve taken an early test. After week 12, the risk of miscarriage falls to 5 percent for the rest of the pregnancy.

Given these statistics, it’s understandable that many parents wait until the risk of miscarriage drops before they announce. Most women don’t want to have to tell people the sad news of a miscarriage shortly after announcing their pregnancy.

The first prenatal visit

Another reason couples wait until the end of the first trimester to share has to do with prenatal checkups. Your first appointment may be around week 8 of pregnancy, or even later.

During the first visit, your provider will run tests to confirm your pregnancy, estimate your due date, screen for infections, and determine the general health of you and your baby.

For some couples, hearing that heartbeat for the first time or having an ultrasound to date the pregnancy is reassuring before announcing it to everyone.

Recurrent pregnancy loss

If you’ve experienced a previous loss, your risk of having another miscarriage may be slightly higher, depending on your health history.

This news can be disheartening, especially in the case of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). Your doctor will likely examine you, order blood tests, and do some other testing to determine the cause of your losses.

The good news is that with the right treatment, your chances of carrying a baby to term may increase. But you might feel more comfortable waiting until after this treatment to announce your pregnancy to everyone.

The pros of waiting to announce your pregnancy

If you’ve had difficulty conceiving, had a previous pregnancy loss, or had a stillbirth, you may want to wait even longer than 12 weeks to share news of your pregnancy. It’s also fine to share later than the traditional first trimester cutoff. It’s entirely up to you and what you feel is best.

Though loss in the second and third trimesters is rare, couples may feel sensitive or worried that something will happen.

In these cases, you may choose to share news about the following instead:

• having an ultrasound that shows the baby is healthy
• finding out the sex of the baby
• reaching the halfway mark of pregnancy (week 20)
• reaching a personal milestone (e.g., when you start showing)

Sometimes letting a close friend or family member know can be helpful, especially if you’re feeling anxious.

If you’re still not comfortable sharing the news, your doctor may be able to refer you to a therapist or support group where you can express your feelings in a safe space.

Another option is to search online for forums with women who have gone through similar situations. Examples of online support groups include:

Pros of Waiting

1. The risk of miscarriage usually decreases after the first trimester.
2. You might feel more comfortable after you’ve had an ultrasound, heard your baby’s heartbeat, or reached a pregnancy milestone.
3. There’s anonymity for you and your partner.

The cons of waiting to share the news

If you’d rather have a support network in place regardless of your pregnancy outcome, feel free to share the news right away.

The first trimester may be tough for some women because of fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and other unpleasant symptoms. Letting a few key people know may help ease the burden. And if you do end up miscarrying, you might not want to have to go through it alone.

You may also want to tell your employer about your pregnancy right away if your job requires you to do physical labor that might be dangerous. These hazards might include:

• bending repeatedly at your waist (more than 20 times per day)
• standing for long periods of time
• lifting heavy things, like boxes, more than once every five minutes
• being exposed to chemicals

Your job may require these tasks. The data isn’t concrete on whether or not these activities directly lead to miscarriage, but it’s still worth considering in the overall picture. Speak with your doctor about the recommendations for lifting during pregnancy for more specifics.

Cons of Waiting

1. The first trimester might be difficult without support.
2. You might be exposed to workplace hazards if you don’t tell your employer.
3. Friends and family might find out from other sources instead of you telling them directly.

Announcing to different groups

It might make sense to announce your pregnancy to different groups at different times. You may want to first tell a few close family members and then some friends before you announce it publicly on social media or tell your co-workers.

Family

Consider telling only your family to start. Your pregnancy will be major news for your parents, especially if this is their first grandchild. You might want to think of a creative way to tell your mother, father, and siblings so you can be there to witness their reaction firsthand.

If you choose to announce to just your family early on in your pregnancy, you’ll have plenty of people to celebrate with, but you won’t have to explain things over and over again if something does go wrong.

Friends

You’ll most likely want to tell your closest friends first. Then, whenever you feel more comfortable, you can broaden the group, or make an official announcement on social media. But be aware that the news might slip out of even the most well-meaning friend or relative.

Social networking is probably the easiest way to get the news out to friends and family who live far away. Posting a picture online of your ultrasound can get the news out in an instant.

Employer

You will have to tell your employer sooner or later, especially if you’re going to be taking parental leave or time off work. As mentioned above, it’s a good idea to tell your workplace right away if your job involves physical labor that might be dangerous.

Once your employer knows of your pregnancy, you’re protected against discrimination under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978. Your employer is required to provide you with reasonable accommodation if you’re unable to perform your work activities safely while pregnant.

If your job doesn’t involve physical labor, you can wait until you’re comfortable letting them know. Just make sure you give your employer a reasonable amount of time to prepare for your time away.

You will most likely want to tell your direct manager first so you two can plan together how to tell others you work with. It’s completely fine to ask your manager to keep this information confidential until you’re ready to tell others.

If you don’t want to inform your immediate superior right away, feel free to meet with your company’s human resources department to discuss your options. Be prepared to discuss their concerns about how your pregnancy will affect your job.

Being professional and prepared will help reassure your workplace of your commitment to making this a smooth transition.

What should you do?

In the end, the choice over when to share your pregnancy is entirely up to you. You can tell friends and family right away, or wait until you know more about the health of you and your baby.

To help make your decision, you may want to ask yourself these questions:

• Do I have a high-risk pregnancy or other factors that increase my miscarriage risk?
• Will telling everyone make me feel more comfortable, or less comfortable?
• Do I have certain work or lifestyle factors that make telling sooner important?
• Do I want a large network of support if something happens?

The takeaway

The beginning of pregnancy can be both exciting and frightening. Try to relax and enjoy the journey.

A lot of women choose to announce their pregnancy at the end of the first trimester because the risk of miscarriage is greatly reduced and their pregnancy “bump” may no longer be easy to hide. Of course, announcing at the 12-week mark isn’t required and the choice is entirely up to you.

Whether or not you tell the whole world right away, make sure to tell your doctor if you’re pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Schedule a prenatal appointment, take your vitamins, and keep up with good eating and exercise habits.

Try to take care of yourself and your baby-to-be. No matter when you share the news, it’ll surely be reason to celebrate.

How to tell mom, parents about pregnancy

“Mom, I’m pregnant!” Why are women so often afraid to say this phrase for the first time? If we are talking about an unmarried young girl, this can still be understood somehow. But why do adult women feel such fear, who have everything in order, have a loving husband, a separate apartment, and a child (whether the first, second, third, fifth …) – they expect with joy?

It has been noticed that in today’s society, today’s women do sometimes have a fear of motherhood. Motherhood does not really fit into the values ​​​​of this society: self-realization, career, achievements … Future motherhood is beginning to be perceived as the boundary between normal life and the life where all popular values ​​seem inaccessible.

Against this background, the fear of admitting to your mother that you are pregnant is quite understandable. But he himself is, in a sense, just a shadow. And the figure that gives this shadow is in fact the need for mother’s support and the uncertainty that she will receive it.

Previously, the older woman, the mother, helped in childbirth, took the child, washed, taught the young woman how to feed, she remembered how her mother did the same for her. Somewhere inside, in the subconscious, a modern woman has a need for this experience, for her mother to say: “Don’t be afraid, I’m near, everything will be fine.”

Today, in more traditional cultures and families where this continuity has been preserved – in each family there are many children, and no one has the thought that talking about pregnancy is scary. Where there is a third, there is a fourth; where there is a fifth, there is a sixth. It is normal, natural and harmonious – the birth of a child.

In modern society, indeed, with the birth of a child, a woman will have to drastically change her life. And she wants to count on her mother’s help in this.

But mother has her own doubts, her own expectations from her daughter. Often, she does not want her daughter to stay at home, to be a housewife. As a rule, a modern mother sees her daughter as a modern woman, successful, reaching career heights. And not every mother approves when her daughter wants to make a stop in this or even turn off the “right” path. In all honesty, an “unsuccessful” daughter deprives the mother of the opportunity to consider herself a “successful” mother.

And then it turns out to be unimportant whether the first child is expected by a woman, or the second or third. She begins to worry that her mother will say: “What a wrong time! Why are you doing this now. You will miss the chance to advance, to succeed.” The most interesting thing is that mothers don’t tell this to someone in the end, but fears that they will say still remain. Sometimes this happens because the daughter did not have the experience of experiencing unconditional acceptance by her mother.

So, pregnancy, voluntarily or involuntarily, is perceived as an event that can ruin life or change it irrevocably…

What until recently was natural and taken for granted: “Pregnancy is not a disease” is now sometimes perceived differently. And if a woman “decides” on the third, on the fourth – she seems either a heroine or not quite in her mind. In any case, her decision looks somewhat extravagant.

Who is responsible for what?

When women who are expecting a child (I repeat, it doesn’t matter if it’s the first, second or sixth child) call the helpline regarding unplanned pregnancy, their fears are especially understandable if they live in an apartment with their mother, are financially dependent on her or she looks after the child. In such cases, we discuss with the caller where whose responsibility is and for what. After all, the truth is that no one has yet canceled the life rule “Whose responsibility is that and power.”

If a woman takes on this responsibility, it is easier for her to build a dialogue with her mother. She can say: “Yes, mom, I understand that you are tired. I am very grateful to you for your help. But I won’t kill my child…” Then there can be quite a business conversation about how she sees her duties, what she will do for this child. And then it turns out that the story is not about money and not about square meters.

When I listen to a caller on our line about her fears and doubts about how to finally inform my mother, at some point I notice that she speaks and thinks only like a daughter, and not at all like a future mother. And it turns out that the same woman thinks, feels and even sounds differently depending on who she now perceives herself to be, a negligent daughter or a future mother.

Her priorities are changing: what is really important to her, what she considers right for herself and her child. Childish resentments and fears go somewhere, patience, wisdom, gratitude appear. She will be able to start a conversation with her mother, and this may already be a dialogue, a search for solutions, and not mutual reproaches and accusations.

What is happening with mom

When there is tension between close people, it would be better to figure out what is wrong?

It doesn’t hurt to be attentive and see what’s really going on with mom. It is clear that she has her anxieties and worries. There may be, among other things, selfish fears that here she is, already an elderly, sick woman. She implicitly hoped that everything had already settled down, she had done everything she could, and now she can be calm: her grandchildren are growing up. And now the situation is changing. Moreover, a mother may not internally admit this to herself, but say: “I’m worried about you, you will create poverty, you yourself will be left without work, you will turn into an old woman, you will not be able to educate your children.”

Or maybe my mother’s picture of what a daughter’s life should be like does not coincide with reality and her daughter’s ideas.

Or she got used to controlling her daughter more or less, and then suddenly the situation got out of control and she was just scared. After all, people sometimes control others not out of malice, but out of a certain distrust of life.

It is likely that the mother is really scared, or lonely, or she lacks attention.

How to talk to mom about pregnancy

Girls often call the helpline and say: “I’m afraid to tell my mother about pregnancy.” I’m starting to figure out what they’re afraid of. It turns out – screams, scandals, sometimes they formulate: “She will kill me!” When I ask them how they think their mother will feel after this news, the girls think deeply.

At some point, they suddenly realize that nothing terrible will happen, well, mom will scream from strong feelings (not the first and not the last time), and in general, strange as it may seem, this is such a form of love and care. This awareness helps them to treat what is happening as a natural phenomenon, “a thunderstorm in early May”, for example.

Expecting a predictable reaction, you can prepare a glass of water, heart drops.

It is important to feel confident. Because only calm confidence will be a kind of deterrent for the development of the conflict.

If the conflict continues

We proceed from a situation where we want to keep peace in the family. The main thing is to speak like a human being, showing that your mother is a person dear to you. “Mom, I see that you are worried, nervous. You are so important to me and it is important for me that we hear each other. Understand that this is not a whim, this is our child and it hurts me when you … “That is, the rule is simple – do not ignore the feelings of another and your own too.

Resentment and looking for someone to blame will definitely not move you forward. You need to look at the situation not with the eyes of an offended girl, but of a woman who knows what all this is for, what she is fighting for, who is building a calm and kind world for her baby.

If a mother is worried because of objective reasons, for example, because her daughter has health problems, it is especially important to show that you are able to take care of your health. Tell your mother which doctors you have already consulted with, under the supervision of which you are going to be observed. This is where the reverse law works: “whose power is that and responsibility.”
