   Junior: Keystone is difficult at times. Most students in high school struggle with mental disorders, and the wellness programs are a total mess. That being said, being at Keystone gives students initiative. Compared to the standard for schools in Texas, Keystone has an almost unparalleled academic program perhaps only second to BASIS. Students learn critical thinking skills and are given invaluable tools to prepare for college. When I was in middle school, I found the middle school program provided valuable note-taking and learning skills for high school. The teachers are truly amazing and want you to approach them. Because Keystone is pretty small, there aren’t many clubs offered, which is a major downside, the student population is not very diverse, and there are a couple of teachers that are terrible but won’t be fired because of their emotional ties with the school.    Sophomore: There are many things that I like about Basis Shavano. First off, the school provides a wide variety of classes and extracurriculars students can choose from, enabling them to enroll into classes or clubs they actually like and giving them a chance to see what their future majors could be like. Not only that, the teachers at Basis are extremely helpful and nice, making the learning experience at Basis not bad at all. Did I mention the lunches? Definitely above-average. However, if there was one thing I could change about my experience at Basis would be the homework load. Basis is the type of school that challenges students in order to prepare them for college, and this is great, but since there isn’t a cap on the amount of homework assigned per class, the upper-grade students receive much more work than necessary.     Many times my children have commented that it was through the mentoring and conversations with teachers that they were inspired to pursue their goals. Over the last five years we have had wonderful teachers and only one (who no longer works there) that was not up to par. The students are nurtured, supported and respected and they are held to high standards both in their behavior and in their academics. The coursework is rigorous as is the homework, but their teachers are always ready and willing to spend extra time outside of school to tutor their students.     Senior: So far, Brandeis has been great! I am a rising senior and I’ve never had a problem at Brandeis. The teachers are dedicated and the student body is diverse. In many of my classes, the teachers instruct in a way that prioritizes student learning. The number of resources available to help students is staggering.
    The school also reminds students that there is more to life than grades. With its almost four pages list of clubs and organizations at the school, I believe anyone can find a place to belong at Brandeis. Personally, I am involved in the school orchestra, NHS, and various other STEM-related clubs.
    The atmosphere is usually relaxing at Brandeis. I have walked through practically every hall and have never felt unsafe. Even at very back halls behind the gyms.
    The culture is also very strong. Brandeis students are proud to be at Brandeis, and we show it at the football games with our rival school.

This school gives students an opportunity to actively participate in class and/ or extracurricular activities, as well as a push for archiving success in the future. SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Education Agency released a list of A-F accountability ratings for school districts and campuses — the first issued since the coronavirus pandemic caused learning disruptions and teacher shortages across the state.

The TEA on Monday said 1,195 districts and 8,451 campuses were rated this year based on performances on the STAAR tests, improvements on those scores, and efforts on “closing the gap” for disadvantaged students.

About 25% of districts and 33% of campuses across Texas saw an increase in their grades from 2019, and about 18% of high-poverty campuses received an A, the TEA states.

“These results show our state’s significant investment in the post-pandemic academic recovery of Texas public school students is bearing fruit,” Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said in a news release.

He thanked teachers and school administrators, calling them the “driving force behind this year’s success.”

Across the state, 33.1% of districts received an A rating, including Bexar County districts Alamo Heights, Boerne, Comal, Fort Sam Houston, Randolph Field and Somerset ISDs.

Another 54% of Texas districts received a B and 9.4% received a C.

The rest of the districts, about 3.5%, received a Not Rated score (a D or F), meaning they received a score of less than 70. A total of 42 districts and 564 campuses in Texas were given a Not Rated label.

In Bexar County and surrounding areas, East Central, Bandera and Seguin ISDs received the label.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez told the Texas Tribune that he’s “really disheartened about the overall district grading.”

”It’s a very complex, complicated system. I feel like the overall score does not reflect the progress made as a school district,” he said. He pointed to a decrease in enrollment in college and economic disadvantages for families.

Districts or schools that received the Not Rated score will not be sanctioned in the upcoming school year, the Tribune reported.

1. Alamo Heights ISD

Overall Grade: A+

Alamo Heights Independent School District is located in the Alamo Heights neighborhood off of Hwy 281, just northeast of downtown San Antonio. In recent state assessments, over 83% of students passed with a score of “proficient” in math and/or reading, and the student-teacher ratio is 15 to 1. Alamo ISD spends just over $15,000 on each student with a total annual budget of about $75,600,000. It is considered one of the top 10 “Best School districts in Texas” and #4 on Niche’s list of “Best Places to Teach in Texas”.

Boerne ISD spends over $12,000 on each student, and it shows: in recent state assessments, nearly 90% of students were declared proficient in reading and math. Boerne was also ranked the top 56th “Safest School Districts in Texas” and in the Top 20 “Best School Districts in Texas” by Niche.

The district spends nearly $12,000 on each student, and the student-teacher ratio is 15 to 1. Randolph Field was ranked in the top 20 “Districts with the Best Teachers in Texas” and #24 on the “Best School Districts in Texas” list.

Texas is celebrating ratings wins as schools show overall improvement this year.

Texas education reporters are digging into the Texas Education Agency’s report cards for school systems across the state showing  improvement from 2019 despite a rough COVID-19 pandemic period over the past two years. In San Antonio, the Express-News reports that some Southside school districts are showing vast improvement from 2019.

One school jumped from failing to passing grades while others showed improvement to even higher passing grades, according to data from TEA. Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath told reporters, including with the Express-News, that San Antonio schools are joining a statewide trend. 

“There are more high performing campuses this year than there were in 2019. There are fewer lower performing campuses this year than there were in 2019,” Morath told reporters. 

TEA grades by looking at STAAR test performance and improvement, and how well schools educate disadvantaged students. The grades shocked administrators in schools districts like Southside ISD’s Heritage Elementary Principal Elise Puente, who didn’t expect the grade they received. 

Here are some of the key takeaways from TEA’s new ratings. 

“We are in shock” 

• Heritage Elementary School in Southside ISD had an F rating in 2019. 
• This year the school received an A rating, the Express-News reports. 
• Heritage is one of seven schools that saw ratings jump drastically. 
• Six Southside ISD schools received F and C ratings in 2019. Those schools received B ratings this year.

“We anticipated that we would be a B, in the state accountability, because as each month progressed, we saw the growth in our students,” Puente told the Express-News. “The A is just… we are in shock. I’m still in shock.”

• Six Somerset ISD schools received A and B ratings. Overall the district received a B, one rating higher than 2019. 
• East Central ISD didn’t fare as well, receiving a “Not Rated” designation with a score of 69, which keeps it from the legal ramifications of a failing grade like closure.  
• The district said in a statement that it has changed the schedules for elementary schools to allow for more time with math and social studies as well as adding more staff. 
• ECISD will also conduct a curriculum audit this fall.

Overall improvement

• Of the 8,451 Texas schools, 27.9% received an A rating, 46.1% received a B, 19.4% received a C rating, and 6.7% received “Not Rated,” the Texas Tribune reported. 
• This year, the TEA only graded on an A to C level to account for pandemic interruptions that forced students into remote learning.  
• Morath said to reporters on Thursday, August 11 that TEA will not submit ” submit our campuses to interventions” this year.

History

SCNS opened in 1984 as one of the first magnet schools in South Texas under principal John Boyers, who remained principal until 2002. The land on which the school is located was donated to the Northside Independent School District by the San Antonio Medical Foundation. HCHS is located in the heart of San Antonio Southwestern Medical Center.

Admission

Unlike most NISD magnet schools, HCHS is an independent campus, not hosted by a parent school (as is the case with the High School for Business Careers and High School for Communication Arts). For admission to HCHS, you must submit an application and an essay, as well as receive a GPA in a high school course. Eligible candidates participate in a lottery, which selected students are notified by mail. Before entering the class of 2001, the admissions process was not conducted like a lottery, and enrolled students were selected based on their applications. Every year, over 800 students apply for only 250 places. ^[2] Public school does not charge tuition to students in or outside the district.

HCHS has about 900 students from grade 9 (freshman) to grade 12 (senior). The VPS curriculum follows the requirements of the Texas Educational Agency, but additional health-related courses are also offered. ^[3] The Health Careers High School flagship program is an opportunity for students to participate in clinical hospital rotations during half the school day, commonly referred to as “Practice” courses in grade 11 (lower grades), which means certification and “Joint Work”. 12th grade (high school) courses where students earn certifications to work with patients at one of the various South Texas Medical Center hospitals.

Graduation Requirements

Students must follow the Texas Foundation Graduation Plan + Endorsement, although most students earn the highest Texas Achievement or Achievement level. At HCHS, students are required to study Pre-AP Biology and Chemistry due to the rigor of the STEM curriculum. NISD has mandated an 8th grade student to take a semester course in Communication Applications in 2019, meeting the GCSE requirements for the class of 2024 and beyond. Along with graduation requirements, students are expected to take elective courses in their respective professional career path (see below).

AP Association and College Board

In May 2016 at HCHS, 90% of students passed over 1,000 exams, with an average of 3. 4 exams per student. The overall pass rate for all exams taken was 69.5% with an average GPA of 3.45, higher than the national average of 3.03 in each exam. This year their students achieved the following ranks: cumulatively during student career in high school:

• AP Scholar: 64 students (scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams)
• AP Honors Scholar: 25 students (average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and a score of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams)
• AP Honors Scholar: 27 students (average score of at least 3 .5 on all AP exams passed and a score of 3 or better on five or more of those exams)
• AP National Scholar: 3 students (average score of at least 4 on all AP exams passed and a score of 4 or better on eight or more of those exams) exams)

HCHS offers over a dozen AP courses including but not limited to: AP Art History, AP Music Theory, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Human Geography, AP Macroeconomics, AP Psychology, AP United Government and State Politics, AP History of the United States, AP World History: Modern, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science Principals, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based, AP Physics 2: On basis of Algebra, AP Latin, AP Spanish Language and Culture and AP Spanish Literature and Culture.

Health and Bioscience Curriculum

Nearly all HCHS students enroll in one of the 7 TEA Endorsement Career Paths in the Public Service or STEM: Clinical Medical Assistant, Dentistry, Medical Laboratory, Pharmacology, Medical Research, Sterile Processing, or Biomedical Engineering. Students must complete the State Pre-AP Health Sciences and Biology Pre-AP course in 9th grade (freshman) and Pre-AP Anatomy and Physiology and Chemistry in 10th grade (sophomore). Other selected health science electives include: Health Sciences Theory, Medical Microbiology, Pathophysiology, Creative Writing for Healthcare Professionals, Mathematics in Biomedical Engineering, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Psychology, Sociology, Critical Issues in Medical Ethics, Forensic Science, Computer Science sciences 1-3; and engineering design and presentation. as well as a dedicated Co-Op/Hospital Clinicals program where students gain work experience to earn one of 5 nationally recognized workplace certifications: Clinical Medical Assistant, Registered Dentist, Phlebotomy Technician, or Sterile Processing Technician.

athletics

HCHS does not have football, basketball, baseball, or volleyball teams. HCHS does compete with other schools in golf, tennis, watersports, track and field, and cross country, which HCHS considers “lifetime” sports. Health Careers is currently ranked 2nd in the district in tennis, second only to Clark High School. The school competes in 6A classification despite its 3A status.

Phoenix Tennis Team

HCHS Tennis is one of the most competitive programs in Region 4, District 27-6A. The varsity team is currently ranked 8th in Region 4 6A.

In the district they compete against Clark, O’Connor, Marshall, Holmes, Jay, Taft, Stevens, Warren, Brandeis and Brennan. Over the past 15 years, HCHS has competed with established power plants such as Westlake, New Braunfels, Reagan, Alamo Heights, Harlingen South and many more. The program was at the regional level for 8 of the 11 years of the collective’s existence. In addition, in the spring individual season, the team has made its share of the regional qualifiers in boys’ doubles, girls’ singles, girls’ doubles, boys’ doubles and mixed doubles. From 2004 to 2007 they passed the state qualifications in women’s singles and mixed doubles. In 2020, they became District 29 Champions-6A.

Fine Arts

HCHS has a respected fine arts program, most notably their Orchestra, which is the largest in the county with over 200 members and 3 orchestral ensembles. The Phoenix Orchestra frequently receives top UIL ratings and has many members of the TMEA All-State Orchestra. HCHS is the only high school in the district that does not have a theater arts program, but compensates for it through its drama club. HCHS also has a university orchestra and choir which are also well developed. The fine arts program was added by the former NISD Bond agency, which called for the expansion of HCHS through the fine arts wing. There is no Studio Art program at HCHS either. Also notable classes are AP Art History and AP Music Theory.

Honors

HCHS is a recognized school that was designated a National Blue Ribbon School in the 1990-1991 school year. ^[4] HCHS is also a Texas Educational Agency (TEA) Model Campus Awarded Gold for Performance (from KETTLE). In addition, HCHS faculty members have also received state and national recognition for excellence in education. ^{[5] [6]} In addition, since 1997 years old, longtime volunteer and resident statistician Dr. Joe Ward runs the Biostatistics Research Club. Dr. Ward’s commitment to the Northside Independent School District and HCHS was recently recognized by the award of Dr. Joe Ward Elementary School. ^[7]

In 2004, Latin teacher Mr. Clyde Lehmann was named the recipient of a $25,000 prize from the Milken Foundation.
In 2008, Health Careers was recognized as “The 2008 Texas High School for Children”. ^[8]
In 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, HCHS was named one of San Antonio’s Best High Schools by Children at Risk. ^[9]

HCHS has also been named an honorary school by the Texas Business and Education Coalition. ^[10] for 2006. And also ranked in the Top 500 Schools ^[11] in the nation by Newsweek.com for 3 consecutive years (2005-2007) HCHS was also ranked among the best schools in Texas by Texas Monthly. ^[12]

Often cited as the best public school in the San Antonio metropolitan area, the school has ranked high among many ranking sites, and NISD has seen a rise in home value due to the creditworthiness of their schools.

School Spirit

The school mascot is the Phoenix, sometimes affectionately referred to as the “flaming chicken”, and the school colors are navy blue, medical white and maroon. Medical white is used as a graduation cap, and the color of the gown is used as a symbol of excellence and professionalism.

Expansion

Health High School, 35 years high school magnet at South Texas Medical Center, will have a $4.5 million campus expansion in January 2020, a project that could increase student enrollment in health care.
