Working at Tesla – a dream job or a constant battle with Elon Musk’s eccentric antics?

Working for Elon Musk’s Tesla company sounds like a dream to many. But in reality, this is hellish work, often in not the most comfortable conditions and with not the highest salary. Listverce has compiled the craziest facts about working at Tesla.

Tesla is the most valuable car company in the world. And this is surprising, if only because it was founded in 2003, and the first car came out only in 2008. While auto giants General Motors Company, Daimler AG and Toyota have been in business for decades.

But Tesla is not a traditional car manufacturer. The company has occupied its own niche, becoming a cross between automakers and an IT company. This makes it very attractive to job seekers who want to be part of something new and unique. However, as many notice, everything is not so rosy.

1. Better stay away from Elon Musk’s desk

This is an unwritten rule that many Tesla employees follow. Elon Musk is known for impulsively firing employees for no apparent reason. Therefore, one of the managers somehow simply forbade his subordinates to pass near the desk of the head of Tesla when he was nearby.

To become the next victim of Elon, it is not at all necessary to do something out of the ordinary. The wrong answer to a sudden, sometimes incomprehensibly phrased question will quickly put you back in the job market.

Tesla often talks about one engineer who was fired in October 2017. He was doing his job at the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada when a colleague said that Elon wanted to see him.

The engineer came to Elon, who yelled at him because of some kind of malfunction. He asked what Musk meant, but the head of Tesla ignored the question and continued to shout.

When the engineer asked for detailed explanations, Musk called him an idiot and ordered him to leave in obscene form and never return. All this took no more than a minute, and the engineer did not understand why he was fired.

2. Tesla only attends important meetings

Let’s be honest: most people hate meetings, especially if they are long, boring and useless. Those who work at Tesla are lucky, because Elon Musk created strict rules on how to hold meetings and who should attend them.

The head of Tesla is for ensuring that employee meetings are rare and short-lived. According to him, the ideal meeting should have four to six employees. More – only if necessary, but even in this case, meetings should be held on business and be as short as possible.

At Tesla, employees are allowed to leave meetings when they realize they are no longer needed. In any other company, this would look indecent, but Elon Musk believes that it is indecent to force an employee to sit idle in an unnecessary meeting.

The reason for such decisions by Musk is not at all concern for employees. Elon wants everyone to be constantly busy. Therefore, if you are not at a meeting, then you better be at the workplace.

A library of sounds for those who are tired of meetings

3. Information can be passed around managers

In many companies, information flows through the chain of command. An employee of a department reports something to his manager, he transfers the data to the head of another department, and he already releases it on his subordinate. Feedback works the same way.

Tesla is completely different. An employee can bypass managers and pass information directly to a colleague from another department. This rule even applies to top management, including vice presidents and Musk himself.

Elon Musk tells employees about this unique communication strategy in a special memo. There he says that the traditional chain of command is stupid and inappropriate. If Tesla is to be successful, information must flow easily and quickly.

Elon Musk believes that the traditional chain of command makes managers feel more important than they really are and also encourages competition between departments. This hurts the success of the company. The head of Tesla warns that he will fire managers who try to control the flow of information.

4. Leaking information can be sued here

As in other large IT companies, Tesla employees can “leak” the company’s internal secrets to journalists. This can lead to layoffs and lawsuits.

In May 2019, Tesla’s security team sent an email to employees saying it fired several employees and sued them for a range of violations, including sharing data with journalists and publishing information about a private company on social media.

The letter also said that every Tesla employee must protect information about the company from those who would be pleased with its failures. However, it seems that the employees do not bother much about this, because the warning letter has also leaked into the public domain.

5. Tesla’s salaries are lower than those of scavengers

Tesla – is it an IT company? The answer is very important if we compare salaries in the market.

For the IT-sphere, salaries at Tesla are very low. And in the automotive industry, such a salary is considered average. Not too high and not too low. But, for example, garbage collectors in the US earn a little more.

In 2020, Tesla said it was paying its mid-level workers $15 an hour, or $47,147 a year. The company is clearly overstating the numbers, because $15 multiplied by a 40-hour work week and 52 weeks a year comes out to $31,200 a year. This is already less than the salary of a garbage collector who earns 19$.9 an hour, or $41,400 a year.

Low pay has always been a Tesla problem. In 2008, the average salary of a company employee was $56,163 per year (including bonuses and company shares). At the same time, Ford employees earned $64,316, and General Motors — $77,849.

If we compare salaries with Facebook and Alphabet, which owns Google, the difference will be even more noticeable. At Facebook, the average salary is $228,651 per year, while at Alphabet it is $246,804.

However, many Tesla employees say that they do not work for the sake of money, so the low salary does not bother them.

How much do car factory workers earn?

6. Overtime is the norm

On November 26, 2018, Elon Musk tweeted: “There are many places where it is easier to work, but no one has yet been able to change the world in 40 hours a week.” He later added another tweet to this: “But if you love what you do, you don’t see it as work.”

This is a very important statement that only Tesla employees understand. In short, Elon Musk expects his employees to work overtime all the time.

Anyone at Tesla will tell you this: Everyone in the company works long hours. Even Musk himself, who sometimes sleeps under his desk.

Some employees find such overhauls inspiring because it forces them to push themselves beyond their limits. Others, however, believe that this is direct evidence of poor leadership.

7. Tesla gives out free Red Bull energy drinks

Typically, a Tesla work shift lasts 12 to 16 hours. Sometimes people work on weekends too, especially if there are deadlines. All this leads to the fact that many in the company at the end of the shift just sit, staring at one point from fatigue, like zombies. They themselves call it Tesla Stare – “Tesla Stare”.

How does a company get its employees to stay active for so long? The answer is simple: with free Red Bull energy drinks. However, not everyone manages to get them for free. Some employees write that they have to buy energy drinks with their own money in order to stay awake at work.

Burnout test: how to know if you burn out at work?

8. You can pass out from stress

Long shifts, overtime, strict deadlines – all this causes stress. Hundreds of Tesla workers complain of cramps, chest pains, shortness of breath while working. And some even faint.

Since 2017, ambulances have been arriving at Tesla factories from time to time to take workers who have become ill to the hospital. However, the company’s managers are under such pressure that they never stop the assembly lines, even if a person is injured. While one lies on the floor waiting for help, the others continue to work.

9. Tesla prohibits unions

Tesla employees are prohibited from forming or joining unions. This is not written into the official policy of the company, but the behavior of the leaders makes it clear.

For example, on May 21, 2018, Elon Musk tweeted: “There is nothing stopping the Tesla team from voting union. If they wish, they can create it even tomorrow. But why would they pay union dues and give up options?”

This tweet was just one of Tesla’s many anti-union actions. The company fired employees for union activities, threatened them, banned the distribution of campaign leaflets, and even introduced a dress code that forbids wearing union-branded clothing.

Trade unions: what are they giving now and who are they protecting?

10. You can be fired without warning at any time

The company is notorious for firing without warning. Today you work, tomorrow you don’t. At the same time, other colleagues about your dismissal are not notified. For example, one Tesla engineer realized that his manager had been fired when he didn’t show up for a meeting.

People at Tesla often get fired in meetings, even when they’re online. A former employee of the energy division told how she received an email at 1 a.m. asking her to join an afternoon video conference. She was among the 250 people who were fired at that meeting. Moreover, this did not depend on her professional results in any way, because even those who fulfilled the sales plan were fired.

Another employee from the car delivery service was fired an hour after he came to work on Monday morning. He guessed that something was going wrong when three managers invited his colleague to the conference room at once. When the girl gathered her things and left the premises, the employee realized what had happened.

He thought that she was fired for poor performance, but then he was also called into the meeting room and told that his position was abolished. Of course, no one warned about this in advance.

US Tesla Factory Workers Complain About Working Conditions / Sudo Null IT News0002 After Elon Musk bought out a closed car factory in Fremont, California, the facility was transformed in a matter of months into a state-of-the-art factory with lots of hi-tech industrial arms and a bunch of innovations.

The company continues to improve to this day, introducing new working methods, optimizing the production process, logistics, etc. But some factory employees are not too happy with the working conditions, believing that in order to achieve his goals, Musk does not spare people.

According to statistics, since 2014, the ambulance has come to the Tesla plant more than 100 times. In general, there is nothing surprising here, since in any, even the most modern production, there are certain risks for employees. Sometimes bad things happen and then people get hurt. There have been several hundred such incidents since the opening of the Tesla facility.

These are all kinds of falls, dizziness with loss of consciousness, pain in the chest and back. Overall, the Tesla factory now employs more than 10,000 people. According to Elon Musk himself, his employees really have a “hard time”, because they have to work a lot, and the work itself is difficult. But he also says that working conditions have improved significantly over the past year, and the number of accidents and other incidents has dropped. The businessman claims that the life and health of the employees of his electric car factory are valued, all labor standards are observed.

Several employees disagree. 15 people, some of whom have already left the company, and some continue to work, believe that the factory workers are constantly under strong pressure to comply with the norms. “I saw people fall to the floor and smash their faces,” says Jonathan Galescu, a Tesla employee. “They sent us to work, telling us to go around the fallen person while the person continued to lie on the floor.”

Galescu claims to have seen people fall right next to the conveyor. “We kept working, working, working, and then we see a man fall to the floor,” Mikey Katura, another employee of the factory, echoes him.

Richard Ortiz, who also works at Musk’s factory, confirms the above, saying that the factory itself is modern, it is the future of the industry, but the employees work as before, and working conditions are not the best.

Although Tesla Inc. – a loss-making enterprise, Musk says that he is trying with all his might to provide decent working and leisure conditions for all employees. Well, a large amount of work is caused by the fact that the number of pre-orders for Tesla electric vehicles is constantly increasing. The bill is already in the hundreds of thousands, and in order to meet the needs of buyers, Tesla is going to increase production by up to 500,000 electric cars in 2018. This is about 500% more than in 2016. It is clear that all this leads to the fact that employees of the enterprise have to work long and hard, although within the framework of American labor law (now Tesla factories are being built in other countries, including Europe).

In February of this year, a Tesla employee published an open letter from the company, talking about constant overwork and ever-increasing workloads. In particular, he spoke about the fact that machines and other equipment are not very convenient, ergonomics leave much to be desired, and during the production process, employees have to perform a large number of unnecessary intermediate operations. About his colleagues, Jose Morgan writes that they are simply afraid to turn to their superiors with requests or complaints so that nothing bad will be thought of them.

Morgan also claims that the $25 an hour salary he and the vast majority of the plant’s employees receive does not match the general financial background of the region where the factory is located (remember, this is California, USA). Prices in California are traditionally high, so employees of Tesla Inc. unable to provide themselves with a comfortable life.

In general, employees who choose to talk about working conditions at the Tesla factory remain loyal to both the company and Musk personally. They say only that they would like to receive a little less workload with an increase in the comfort of their workplace. Musk himself tries to hear his subordinates. This year, for the first time, the base salary was increased, and working conditions continue to improve.

Elon Musk agrees that there are some problems. He explains them as follows: “Creating an automobile production from scratch is a bad way to make money, maybe rockets are an even worse way.” Therefore, there are problems, but, according to the head of the company, they are gradually being solved.

At the same time, the goals set are also being met, in any case, over 25,000 electric vehicles were produced in the first three months of 2017. This is a record for Tesla. At the same time, some employees of the company’s factories argue that the plans announced by Musk are simply unrealistic, and an attempt to fulfill them leads to the company’s employees suffering.

“We’re trying to work doing good for the world, and we believe we’re doing the right thing,” Musk said. “And this obliges us, first of all, to worry about the health and safety of our own employees.”

Musk himself looks very tired in many recent photos. No wonder – he participates in the work of almost all of his enterprises, which produce a lot – from rockets to solar panels and electric vehicles

The entrepreneur even sleeps at the factory in order to directly monitor the implementation of tasks. Last year, the company received much more pre-orders for the Tesla Model 3 than expected. As a result, previously developed plans had to be changed. Until 2016, Tesla Inc. Planned to increase production to 500,000 electric vehicles by 2020. In May 2016, it was decided to produce the same number of vehicles in 2018.

Of course, 15 dissatisfied employees out of 10,000 is not a lot, but Musk, as far as one can understand, tries to listen to the opinion of his subordinates. In any case, the company continues to grow.

ᐈ It became known how much Tesla employees earn

Tesla is urgently looking for staff for almost all sites for the Grünheide plant. Numerous engineers have already submitted documents to the American car manufacturer.

Giga-Factory Berlin-Brandenburg » The first cars should roll off the assembly line as early as 2021. To this end, Tesla initially wants to hire about 12,000 new employees in manufacturing and administration. In the future, it is planned to create up to 40 thousand jobs. But how well does Elon Musk’s coveted company pay?

The head of the employment agency in Frankfurt/Oder, Jochem Freier, commented to Handelsblatt on wages at Tesla’s Gigafactory. He told the newspaper that the starting salary in the lowest salary group is 2,700 euros per month gross. And this is even for the unskilled unemployed. “The salary is just a bomb for such a level,” says Freyer.

“Tesla pays significantly better than is customary in the area and will be guided by a collective bargaining agreement on wages in the steel and electrical industries,” the head of the department told Handelsblatt.

Of course, Elon Musk is not only looking for unqualified personnel. 264 Tesla employees have already provided salary transparency on the Kununu portal. Find out how much you can earn with Tesla.

how much he lives, how much he spends and saves

This is a repeat spending diary

It is interesting to see how life can change – or not change at all. In this diary we will see what happened in a year with an engineer from Kaluga.

Anonymous

lives in Kaluga with a salary of 65,000 R

About me

Age: 29 years old.

City: Kaluga.

Family: I live alone.

Position: electronics engineer.

Industry: production of military electronic equipment.

Salary: salary – about 55,000 R. Bonuses – a certain percentage of the salary, which is determined by the results of the enterprise, taking into account at least a dozen other parameters – the methodology changes from time to time, I have no idea how they think it .

Additional payments for business trips – about 4,000 R. This year, it turns out an average of 65,000 R per hand per month. Compared to last year, the salary increased due to the restructuring of the enterprise, indexation and increase – yes, I do not like my job, but I work conscientiously.

Additional sources of income: firstly, tax deduction – 54,803 R for IIA and for treatment for the last year.

Secondly, I have a savings account at Home-Credit Bank at 5.5% per annum — I keep here the money that I withdraw from credit cards. The amount on the balance sheet varies, but does not exceed the total credit limit – 365,000 R.

Since the beginning of the year, I received 2455 R, but this is due to the fact that the money intended for placement on the account was in other instruments. If you do not deviate from the strategy, then you can receive about 1200 R per month, taking into account the cost of servicing credit cards.

The scheme is simple. We need a credit card with the ability to withdraw cash without commission and during the grace period. For example, “100 days without interest” from Alfa-Bank and “110 days without interest” from Raiffeisenbank are suitable. They have a withdrawal limit of 50,000 R per month, let’s take this into account.

Let us have a credit card with a limit of 100,000 R. On the last day of the month, we withdraw 50,000 R and put it into a savings account with the possibility of replenishing and withdrawing at any time and with a daily interest, not a minimum one – this is important! – remainder. The next day, we repeat the operation. Don’t forget to make the minimum payments. In a little less than three months, we withdraw money from the account and extinguish the debt. The cycle can be repeated.

Now I have two Alfas and two Raifs with a total credit limit of 365,000 R. I plan to request an increase in the limits for the last two.

Thirdly, there is a cashback for purchases with the MTS Cashback credit card – since the beginning of the year, 1770 R has been received, it comes in points, but they can pay for the services of an MTS operator for someone in exchange for rubles.

How much I save: usually not less than 50,000 R per month, I invest everything.

How much I saved: about 1,330,000 R.

What are you saving for: I save for financial independence, I am a supporter of FIRE – the concept of achieving financial independence by capitalizing most of the income and optimizing spending.

In total, by current standards, I plan to save from 9,000,000 to 12,000,000 R — this is enough to have a monthly passive income indexed to inflation of 30,000 R, which is about twice my current expenses.

I used to adhere to the “portfolio consumption” model during my life, but I began to follow the well-known 4% rule, since I manage to increase capital even faster than planned, and additional stability will not be superfluous here: accumulate a tenth million in addition to the ninth relatively easy, and the growth rate of the portfolio at the same level of consumption will increase significantly.

According to the 4% rule, in order for the growth in the value of an investment portfolio of stocks to keep pace with inflation, no more than 4% of its value per year should be withdrawn. The rule is based on a study of Trinity University faculty and is often used to estimate the capital required to achieve financial independence. Here is a good video on this topic, I recommend watching it if you are interested.

Investments: I have an IIS and a brokerage account in Sberbank, with which I buy FXUS and FXRL funds from each salary. I started investing in March 2020. There are now 800,000 R on the IIS, 330,000 R on the brokerage account.

IIS Brokerage account

IIS Brokerage account

I also have cryptocurrencies: I bought BTC and BNB from the fall of last year until the spring of this year – this is not an investment recommendation, – now there are about 300,000 rubles in my wallet.

Ownership: mortgages for 1,900,000 R in 2017. I invested 700,000 R, relatives helped with the rest. About another 400,000 R was spent on repairs, furniture and household appliances.

Regular expenses

Products: 6500-7500 R.

Utility payments: 2000-3500 R.

Technique: Smartphone once every four years and all small things – up to 12,000 r per year.

Health: up to 10,000 R per year. Consultations of doctors and part of analyzes on VHI. I buy mainly anti-allergy tablets and eye drops, moisturizing hand cream, vitamin D.

Gifts for relatives and colleagues: 7500—10 000 R per year.

Transport: trolleybus pass plus additional trips – 426 R.

Internet: combined tariff with mobile communication “Close people 3+” from Beeline – 423 R, with a discount after trying to change the operator.

Hobbies: up to 5000 R per year – for musical equipment and electronic components. Last year I spent money on a kit for self-assembly of an electric guitar, it cost about 4400 R, this year I planned to purchase power transistors, but this is not accurate.

I want to order FGH60T65SQD at 365 R per piece in a batch of 10 or more from a foreign distributor, but he pays through PayPal, which I am too lazy to register, and right now I don’t really need them.

Other household expenses: bags, napkins, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, washing powder, fabric softener, light bulbs, and so on – 4500-6000 R per year.

Taxes: per apartment – 249 R.

Paid courses, books: to 1000 R per year. Whenever possible, I use free sources of information.

Cafes and restaurants: up to 500 R per year. For a birthday, you can order food more or less profitably. This year I bought pizza and shawarma, received another pizza as a gift. For 460 R, the issue of food for a day and a half was resolved.

Clothing: n.a. Last time I bought something else before I started keeping track of finances. I think I took the shoes in 2018. In general, I buy something new only if the old one becomes unusable.

Loans, mortgages: “100 days without interest” credit card from Alfa-Bank with a limit of 150,000 R – 1490 R for annual service. There is also a second one for 50,000 R, received under an individual offer, with a year of free maintenance.

Car: is missing and I’m glad it’s possible to do without it. I share Babaikin’s opinion on this issue: the car itself is not cheap, the cost of it is higher than the cost of public transport, it takes time to maintain it, and the bonus is the opportunity to incur administrative, and even criminal liability.

Paid software: antivirus, mobile applications – this year 0 R. I didn’t renew my license for antivirus, I don’t feel the difference.

Services: advertising on YouTube, when viewed from a mobile phone, sometimes heats up, but I hold on – 0 Р. need my help.

Sports: I do (sometimes) at home – 0 R.

How I manage the budget

I keep track of finances in the Zen Money application, for which I bought an eternal subscription. It pulls data from mobile banks. I use only cashless payments, so all transactions are at a glance. I turned off the synchronization of the IIS, brokerage account and crypto wallet so that my eyes would not be an eyesore.

I also use the free version of the TickTick organizer to harness the power of five credit cards. And in general, this is a useful thing: writing down cases and even just interesting thoughts allows you to unload the brain.

Expense report in Zen Money Planning in TickTick

Day one, Thursday

Daily expenses: 141 R

07:00. Climb. Yesterday I returned from a business trip late in the evening and would have loved to sleep more, but I need to steam green buckwheat so that I have something to eat for breakfast. This takes at least an hour and a half.

While the grits are soaking, I wash the dishes and boil three chicken eggs to take with me to work and eat for lunch.

07:30. There is time to study. I am taking the course “Introduction to Data Science and Machine Learning” at Stepika. This is an easy introductory course with a good set of practical tasks – to warm up before something serious. Completed Section 1.7 on data visualization in seaborn.

08:40. Breakfast is ready – steamed green buckwheat with beef liver stewed in sour cream. I love the principle of keep it simple, stupid – the solution to the problem should be as simple as possible, therefore this is the most difficult dish I cook. Time is short, I put a smaller portion. While eating, I pack a bag for work. For dessert, a slice of dark chocolate.

09:10. The courier calls, specifies the delivery address of the parcel.

09:13. Finally manage to get out of the house. The trolleybus mockingly passes by when I am almost at the stop. The situation is very common, sometimes I even want to start keeping statistics on the waiting time at the bus stop in order to identify some kind of anomaly, but then I realize that I’m just focusing on negative outcomes, and calm down. It’s like with reviews of goods and services: if everything is good, then a person may not write anything, but if there is a problem, you can’t do without comments.

09:49. A little late for work, but it’s not scary. The main thing is not to exceed the monthly time limit for being late, otherwise you will have to write explanatory notes later, and the time for being late will be rounded up to a multiple of an hour and subtracted from the time worked. This naturally leads to a decrease in wages for this month. It is impossible to arrive later and leave later – late arrivals are not processed.

Reported on the results of the business trip, got a little bit for nuts for not having time to do everything.

10:12. I am writing a security program – POB. This is a document with a list of measures to ensure safety – personnel, the environment, and so on – at all stages of product development. In the process, I am distracted by two urgent change notices: any change in the design documentation is carried out through a change notice in accordance with GOST 2. 503-2013.

After some time, our local servers crash. As usual, enterprise administrators are desperately fighting to save the workflow. I have everything saved on my computer, so I don’t experience any difficulties.

You might think that an engineer’s job is to design instruments. I was also so mistaken when I entered the university. In fact, most of the time is spent writing documentation. First you make a document, then you send out clerks and letters to get it approved, but if you need to change it, please issue a notice of the change and get it approved too. Needless to say, you often have to wait for the right people from a meeting, from vacation, from sick leave, from lunch, who the hell knows where else?

Changes to the documentation are made manually, as it is stored on paper or tracing paper in the archive, and copies are sent to the departments and workshops that will work on it. The development itself is also not particularly encouraging: this is not a hobby where my hands are completely untied. Here we are working with the domestic element base, the diversity of which is not impressive. Documentation on it sometimes leads to the appearance of gray hair.

11:14. The courier brought the parcel. What’s inside, I won’t say. On what day I unpack the diary – too. Let there be intrigue.

13:00. Lunch – His Majesty hummus with mini-bread from Vkusvill and hard-boiled chicken eggs. For dessert, two slices of dark chocolate. There will be no photo – colleagues will think that I am sick.

I have the same menu every day – it’s just convenient. This year, I did not update the data either on nutrients or on prices – there are more interesting things to do.

13:35. I continue to work, I am doing a reliability program – PON. It’s like a POB, only about reliability, not security.

14:25. It’s time to go to the nearest clinic for vaccination. At first I wanted to joke about chipping, but this is already such a hackneyed topic that it’s not even interesting.

After a short stay in the queue, I receive the second component of Sputnik V. Before the injection, the doctor asked about the reaction and advised me to take anti-allergic pills in the evening, because after the first vaccination, in addition to a temperature increase by a degree and pain in the muscles, the next day I had swelling around the injection site for four days.

In general, I have a positive attitude towards vaccination, because it facilitates the course of the disease and reduces the likelihood of complications. For me, this is a sufficient argument. He got accustomed – he took care of himself and those around him.

15:30. I return and continue to work. After vaccination, they are allowed to go home, but, as for me, this makes no sense: the symptoms will appear only tomorrow. Servers, by the way, are still lying, people are indignant.

16:45. Going home. On the way, I visit a plastic container store – I want to look for something as a case for one of my electronic crafts. But everything is kind of flimsy, the walls of the containers are very dented. It is better to get plywood or chipboard somewhere.

I go to Vkusvill and take three packs of kefir. −141 R

17:50. Houses. I call my mother – she visited her grandmother, who is in the hospital with covid. Lung damage – 70%, breathing only through an oxygen mask. It is sad that she did not have time to be vaccinated before the illness. Mom got vaccinated.

18:15. I brew oatmeal on water – top porridge for my money. Well, where else can you find a hearty meal for less than 10 R per serving? While cooking, I snack on almonds.

18:50. I put a steaming, thick, fragrant porridge. Freshly prepared, it is unrealistically good, you don’t even need to add anything. For dessert, a slice of dark chocolate.

Bon appetit!

19:22. I am doing pandas exercises and a project on analyzing data about platform users on Stepika.

20:30. I pour a mug of kefir – I drink half a pack in the evening in two sets. I take the Erius pill so as not to suffer tomorrow from an allergy to the vaccine.

21:30. More kefir and a banana. For dessert, a slice of dark chocolate.

21:58. Enough study for today. I devote an hour before going to bed to work on my project for the electronic crafts competition of enterprise employees – the Tesla coil DRSSTC.

I’m an experienced coiler: a few years ago I built an SSTC coil and developed my own DRSSTC driver. In the spring of this year, I completed work on its second version and planned to slowly, enjoy the reel, but literally this week the news about the competition thundered and caused confusion.

They promise money for prizes. They don’t name the amount, but I have a feeling that the maximum will be about 3,000 R, and I already have the most complex component of the device ready and have developments for the rest. Well, how can you resist participating! In a little over a month, SSTC needs to be converted into DRSSTC using dirt and sticks – hot melt adhesive and electrical tape. This is a new experience, but I am mentally prepared and informationally savvy, so I have to cope.

Did you not understand the previous paragraph? We need a little educational program on coiling – I recommend a video and an article from comrade bsvi. Well, for the most impatient, I will give an explanation here. Tesla coil – aka tesla, coil, coil – is a device for obtaining beautiful spark discharges.

Coiler, aka tesla builder, is a person who is fond of making coils. SSTC, DRSSTC are types of transistor coils that are very different from each other, and the second is more difficult. Why is it needed at all? Yes for fun! Sticking to small or not-so-man-made lightning bolts is fun, and designing a device that generates them is even more interesting.

The coil makes a really powerful impression live, because in addition to the visual component, you can smell nitrogen oxides in the air and assess the sound pressure level: the coils can be VERY loud. It also seems to me that one can experience a special pleasure, similar to the feeling that ancient people experienced when they learned how to make fire.

So, I examine the Tesla, I understand that I want to take an old secondary coil with a lower resonant frequency – this will reduce the heating of the transistors, which will increase their reliability.

I will put another fan from the computer power supply for better cooling. It is necessary to achieve good reliability: the explosion of transistors at the competition, of course, would look spectacular, but this is not what we need.

It’s more pleasant to make things to the music — turn on The Loudest Silence — Aesthetic Illusion. The guys have a strong start: they recorded only the first album, but have already worked with Therion and Epica.

23:08. I repaired the secondary: I soldered and glued the wire to the lower end of the winding, screwed an aluminum toroid from the manufacturer Onetesla.

23:30. Time to sleep.

With this secondary coil, the torus is combined harmoniously. Climb. I do not feel a change in temperature, there is some painful weakness, but it is easier than last time.

07:00. Breakfast is still the same buckwheat. I eat the same thing every day and don’t worry. Further in the text I won’t even specify – for reference, see the menu of the first day.

Iron loading dose

07:40. I leave the house.

08:14. At work. The servers have been fixed.

09:00. With peripheral vision, I notice the movement of some object, I hear rustling and clicking. It seems to be a mouse. They occasionally appear with us, but after that they treat themselves to free cheese – that is, they fall into a mousetrap.

09:40. Colleagues discuss antiviral drugs. It turns out that homeopathy works on someone, and they even know that they are taking a dummy. Such suggestible people exist.

10:02. They call from the technical control service – STK – and report that we should have issued some kind of notice a year ago. The boss instructs me to deal with this. I have no idea what changed there – another employee issued these documents, and he is now on sick leave. Well, we need to investigate this complicated case!

I check with STK what was corrected and in what documents – they say about some kind of hairpin. I take drawings from the archive, study them and find that in some specifications this part is incorrectly indicated.

10:54 am. Made a notification with the reason for the change – an error in the execution of design documentation. Such notification ciphers are scolded at meetings dedicated to the quality of work, but there is nothing to be done. In general, I do not like to scold for other people’s mistakes. For my own – as much as I like, I can even take the blame on myself in a controversial situation. But where even theoretically my participation could not be, sorry.

13:00. Dinner.

14:40. I’m starting POB for another product.

15:09. There is a slight headache, but this is absolutely insignificant against the background of the reaction to the first component of the vaccine, when, as I remember, before going to bed there was not a single acceptable option for placing the head on the pillow due to pain in the already spasmodic neck muscles.

4:45 pm. Time to go home. Today I don’t need to buy anything, but I don’t want to carry the package – I’ll go by trolleybus.

17:30. Houses. Call mom – grandma got better.

17:38. It’s time to pay the bills! I enter the meter readings for electricity, gas and water into the utility bills and start paying:

  • maintenance of common property – 1487 R;
  • overhaul – 304 R;
  • electricity – 278 R;
  • garbage disposal – 154 R;
  • cleaning company – 150 R;
  • intercom – 45 R;
  • gas — 43 R.

Total — 2461 R. −2461 R

I pay for everything except the last item with the MTS-cashback credit card: the first two accounts are on the websites of the respective companies, the rest is through the Tinkoff mobile application .

In the MTS application, you can also scan QR codes, but there are problems with entering meter readings. As a result of these manipulations, I receive a 1% cashback from the payment for all services, except for the cleaning company, since they only accept transfers to a Sberbank card (!).

The inability to pay by credit card is annoying. Some organizations generally have a problem with customer service. Once I was going to place a large order in one online grocery store, but I had to cancel it, as they shifted the task of calculating the cost of delivery to the buyer, and there was not enough initial data for this. The manager told me so: “You can calculate the cost of delivery yourself on the website of the transport company.” How do people generally make money with this approach to doing business?

18:30. Dinner.

19:05. “Stepik” – I study decision trees.

I still have not closed the question of self-realization. Last year, I procrastinated a lot about this, tried to determine my preferred areas of activity with the help of tests, tried to start doing back-end development – I got bored after a month and a half of daily training, buried my “balcony” startup at the very beginning: you come up with a cool idea, then you realize that she is only interested in you.

I realized that over and over again I step on the same rake: I think first of all about money, I force myself to work and quite naturally I soon lose interest. So my new plan is not to think about money at all when choosing a field of activity, just ignore the financial side of the issue.

I took a break for six months, worked on a Tesla driver, thought about life and chose two directions: music and machine learning. In the first, I am interested in composing, writing songs, but here I am so bad that I don’t even know which side to approach. It looks like we need to start with the basics of music theory, ear training, a sense of rhythm.

For practice, I took an electric guitar – one of the most affordable instruments with good sound variability. By the way, it was a kit for assembling an Aiersi Stratocaster – it’s cheaper, plus there is an opportunity to understand the structure of the instrument, learn how to repair and tune it. If you pick up a factory product for the first time, then you feel insecure because of the fear of spoiling something. There is complete freedom for creativity.

For example, I soldered a guitar buffer – a circuit that matches the guitar output and the computer’s line input. Organized a bipolar power supply from two 14,500 format lithium-ion batteries – usually a “crown” is used in guitar stray, but I don’t have a rechargeable version of it.

And I put a 3.5 mm Jack on one end of the cable to connect to a PC. On the other side, Guitar Rig is waiting for us – a virtual guitar processor that frees you from the need to collect any gadgets in the hardware. Thus, 4500 R is the price of an entrance ticket to the world of metal.

Of course, I don’t know how to play at all – I really don’t know how, unlike the show-offs from YouTube, who, after uttering this phrase, give out a virtuoso solo – but even this turns out to be high.

Tool in progress DIY guitar buffer with Li-ion low battery indicator Couldn’t resist using this picture!

The situation with machine learning is also interesting. The idea of transferring all sorts of routine processes to computing devices is close to me, and machine learning expands the boundaries of the possible. Reinforcement learning is especially impressive – this is when an object finds the optimal behavior model based on feedback in accordance with some evaluation criteria.

Relatively speaking, we introduce our ward to the rules of the game and leave him to practice, we visit him in a week or two, and he already smashes professional cybersportsmen and gives out such feints that you still need to be able to think of! I’m exaggerating, but the idea itself is pure delight.

I don’t know where this will lead me, but the topic of Machine Learning / Data Science needs to be studied. I started in June, spent a month and a half on mathematical training, took courses in linear algebra from MIT, combinatorics and probability theory from MIPT, and statistics from the Institute of Bioinformatics.

I have good residual knowledge in mathematical analysis, I did not repeat it. I’m working on my specialty for the second week — I got access to the specialization from MIPT and Yandex, now I’m taking the already mentioned DS/ML course on Stepik to warm up and signed up for the 30 Days of ML challenge on Kaggle, which starts in August.

If you study hard, there are chances to get an internship at the end of the year during your vacation. True, first you need to get to it, and this is not easy. Moreover, remote work is unlikely to threaten us and we should not hope for payment, therefore, apparently, we will have to go to Moscow and spend our savings there. So-so perspective, to be honest.

It is more likely that I will simply pay someone for the opportunity to train remotely: it will be more profitable in terms of money, and in general it will be somehow more real to immerse myself in the workflow. Yes, IT is like this now …

I don’t like Moscow because of the relatively high population density, traffic jams, and incredibly bloated real estate market. It is sad that you can only find work in some professions there. I am very confused by the need to move for employment in DS / ML. We need to switch to remote work at the first opportunity.

Actually, I’m a homebody, and I use the Internet for most things. It seems to me that it doesn’t matter in which city to stay in an apartment. The main thing is that the neighbors are adequate and the living expenses are small.

I also really don’t interact much with people, and I prefer getting information rather than sharing it. I usually share something if people should know, in my opinion, or if I answer someone who asks. I’m used to loneliness, I’m so comfortable.

22:00. I am starting to calculate the primary circuit DRSSTC – this is new to me. I watch a video about the frequency response of a Tesla. I am making a model in the Simetrix circuitry (SPICE) simulator, trying to figure it out.

23:13. Enough for today.

Third day, Saturday

Daily expenses: 560 R

08:00. I woke up, I had breakfast, everything was as usual.

09:22. I am uncovering the Sympy Python library for calculating the amplitude-frequency response – frequency response – of connected circuits. In the Maple math software package that I usually use, it would be faster to calculate, but I want to learn the library. In the process, I read the documentation and remember the T-model of a transformer with mutual inductance.

Of course, I had fun, but other things being equal, the model on Python is considered slower than in a specialized simulator. It would be necessary to pull out the formula for the frequency response and rewrite it under numpy – this is a library for productive matrix calculations, but for now I will return to the simulator.

13:00. Dinner. Get a photo.

Food worthy of the imperial table

14:00. While playing with the model, I wanted to type formulas for calculating Tesla parameters in order to have my own rhyme, in addition to the bsvi calculator.

For a more accurate calculation, it was necessary to determine the diameter of the wire by insulation, but there was no documentation for it on the Internet (!). I took out an electronic micrometer from the desk drawer, but the battery in it died. I use batteries wherever possible, and with this “push-button” fraternity, it’s always a headache.

Okay, I was going to go to the grocery store, I’ll drop by for some batteries too.

I took a package of AG-13 batteries in Chip and Dip. −98 R

Went to Vkusvill for hummus — 240 R and to Pyaterochka for chicken eggs and bananas — 222 R. −462 R

4:03 pm. Houses. The diameter of the wire – 0.11 mm – turned out to be larger than what I used earlier, but this did not help the cause. According to my formulas, the frequency of the secondary circuit turned out to be lower, so for the calculation in the worst case, I left the parameters from the bsvi calculator.

18:20. Dinner. As usual.

18:40. I remembered that I have a cool book – DRSSTC: Building the Modern Day Tesla Coil. I read that the primary is tuned to the lower resonant peak, and the rest is not so important. Still there modelka credit.

Essence of DRSSTC – Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla Coil

Outlined four options for the primary circuit for the capacitors I have in stock for the MMC block. I ran the simulation, calculated it in the calculator, and chose the best option.

00:07. Sleep.

Day four, Sunday

Daily expenses: 0 R

08:19. Woke up. The fever subsided a bit. What a great sleep! I recommend to everyone.

08:43. At breakfast, I look through Telegram: the hobbyist channel is “useful news for experienced bank customers” and a FIRE chat. Oh, the key rate is 6.5% – we are waiting for an increase in deposit rates.

The FIRE movement teaches you to look at the world differently. If you buy something, then in fact you pay with the money that you received during your life devoted to work. If you make purchases for money that is not there, then it is even sadder – you yourself can draw analogies. Is it worth exchanging your life for things that, if you think about it, are not really needed?

FIRE is not about lying on the couch all day – or on the beach, it doesn’t matter – and degrading. Financial independence gives you the freedom to do whatever you like and unload your brain from the worries of finding money for a living. In the end, FIRE does not forbid going to work if you want to – you can just feel much more free, not bend under any idiotic demands of management under the threat of being fired, change jobs at least every two months if you want variety, and so Further.

FIRE is also not about saving on everything and infringing on yourself. The movement proposes a rational attitude to purchases: to separate the wheat from the chaff and not succumb to the manipulations of marketers who deftly exploit the vulnerabilities of human thinking. Among other things, the ability to enjoy simple intangible things, activities, creativity is true wealth.

It is clear that FIRE is far from being for everyone, and this is normal. You need to live on high and stick to those ideas that suit you specifically.

So, we need to make the primary coil today. Google how to draw a spiral.

09:25. I turn on the Theater Of Tragedy – Velvet Darkness They Fear and start drawing the primary in the Compass computer-aided design system.

10:31. The miracle spiral does not fit into A4 sheet, it must be reduced. I am entering a new option into the calculator. Meanwhile I turn on Therion – Beloved Antichrist.

11:28. The second version of the spiral is ready. Before proceeding, I decide to check the length of the air conditioning pipe that I am going to use to make the primary coil. For some reason, I was initially sure that everything was in order, but, as it turned out, about half a meter was missing.

Wrote a Python script to calculate the length of a spiral from the inner diameter, pitch and number of turns. I compared several options in the calculator, chose the one that takes the contour parameters less from the previously defined ones.

13:12. Standard lunch.

Studying the code of the bsvi calculator page. Previously, the secondary was calculated using well-known formulas, and then the GeoTC library was used, which describes the physical model of the coil. I also looked at a web application based on this library – a more user-friendly calculator on tqfp.org. Respect to the author for getting valuable information from the depths of the Internet and writing down such a convenient rhyme.

13:42. I’m doing a first. I took an unnecessary board from chipboard, attached a printout of a spiral, drove in nails to use them as fulcrum when twisting a copper tube.

Whom to beat the shelf?

15:22. What happened in the end is capable of plunging into aesthetic shock, I will not show it. When twisting, mechanical stresses accumulated in the pipe, so it sprawled after being removed from the supports. I slightly corrected the situation with pliers, but left ugly serifs on it. We need to figure out how to cover it up. ..

Starting to assemble the MMC block. Only nine capacitors are needed, and I have over a hundred in stock.

I tin pieces of foil fiberglass using a 100 W MMC soldering iron assembly. Heaped solder from the heart

16:35. Enough Tesla for today. I still have the package unpacked.

I ordered a yoga mat and a set of massage rolls and balls from Aliexpress. These two orders were combined into one package, delivered in 10 days. I paid for everything 2283 R.

Each order is in a separate travel bag Included massage accessories are large and small rolls, “peanuts” and a ball

Watching a video about working out trigger points at 2.5 speed. Trigger points are areas of local tension in muscle tissue that prevent its full functioning and cause pain. To the touch, they are like painful seals. Appear as a result of excessive muscle tension.

This can happen both during intensive training, and vice versa, with insufficient physical activity – then some muscle groups are weakened, the load is redistributed to other muscles and already causes their overstrain. I have a second case.

Looking for trigger points by repeating the exercises from the video. In the process, I find out that the rug is narrow. If you just stand in the bar, then it’s fine, but if you roll, then you need to constantly monitor the positioning. The massage accessories themselves are hard, they are more suitable for those who do not feel pain, for example, those who like to short with shoulder hype promotions.

18:00. Dinner.

18:45. “Stepik”.

20:30. Kefir. I soak buckwheat.

21:30. Another kefir, then a banana.

22:10. I start the steamer with buckwheat.

22:58. I wash the dishes, I transfer the buckwheat from the double boiler to the pan.

23:14. I keep hitting trigger points. As a result, I found more than half of the videos – well, not the worst result … I decided to look for them, because I have muscle tension. For example, my calves are so spasmodic that if, after waking up in the morning, I stretch in bed, then with a high probability they will cramp and I will writhe in pain for the next minute.

I didn’t like the exercises with the massage ball: it keeps rolling away. For point work, it would be interesting to try a percussion massager – this is such a thing that looks like a gun and allows you to effectively knead hard-to-reach areas.

23:50. Somehow I didn’t notice that the weekend was over. Is today really Sunday?

Day five, Monday

Daily expenses: 63 R

06:00. Stand up and fight! In the shower.

07:05. Breakfast. Yesterday I forgot to pour water into buckwheat before evaporating, you can feel it.

08:12. At work.

08:30. Too much talk – colleagues discuss vacations. I have nothing against it, but I can’t concentrate on work. Headphones come to the rescue.

When I’m on vacation, I usually enjoy not having to get up on my alarm clock and not having to rush anywhere in the morning. I also forget about the work turmoil and go about my business.

During the May holidays, I assembled an electric guitar and soldered a Tesla driver. I like to concentrate on things, not switching to other tasks until I finish the previous one – to work in the flow. This allows you to achieve goals more efficiently than if you only deal with a task in the evenings after work.

10:26 am. The suspicious Friday object was identified as a mouse – it leisurely ran behind me and disappeared under the bedside table. A second later, she stuck her head out, looked around and hid again. You can safely write in the vaccination diary that there are no hallucinations among the side effects.

13:00. Dinner.

16:45. On the way home, I took a five-liter mineral water without gas. −63 R

17:30. Houses. I know that grandma is on the mend. I brew oatmeal, rate orders on Aliexpress for five stars, fill out a vaccination diary – somehow there’s not even anything to note this time.

18:45. Dinner. I study model quality metrics and practice on decision trees in Stepika.

21:57. I’m disassembling the SSTC electronics unit under Ex Libris – Amygdala. I’m interested in the power supply.

Dual bank board – what I’m going to borrow from here

Gutted the electronics of a homemade induction heater for a half-bridge inverter board. There is a similar one in SSTC, but it is difficult to modify, and I need to cut the tracks suitable for the control pins and solder the elements of the RD circuit to adjust the switching time of the transistors: this option was included in the SSTC driver, but not in the new one.

Calculated and partially wound a GDT transformer that matches the output of the driver with a half-bridge.

23:07. Hang up.

In the foreground is a GDT with undivided windings, followed by a half-bridge board from an induction heater

Day six, Tuesday

06:45. Climb. I cancel the debt of 47,000 R on the second credit card “100 days without interest” from Alfa-Bank. I withdraw money from my savings account. In general, I like the application of the Home-Credit Bank for its convenience: you can instantly transfer any amount from the account to the Benefit card and send it via SBP or C2C.

07:00. Breakfast. Buckwheat with liver, as on the first day.

I buy groceries almost every day. Those that spoil quickly – hummus, kefir, bananas – I take volumes for no more than six days. As before, I use the “favorite product” in Vkusvill to the fullest. I don’t order home – it’s easier and cheaper to buy it yourself on the way home from work.

I am not particularly interested in food. In today’s world of abundant food, this is a source of undeserved pleasure. Pleasure should be a reward for beneficial action – this is the essence of the dopamine system. If you do not limit the consumption of cheap sources of pleasure, this system will adapt, and this can lead to a number of problems, the main of which is a decrease in motivation.

Of the sweet things, I respect only chocolate, though bitter. Simple carbs don’t fill me up. Restaurants, in my opinion, are crazy: paying big money for small portions of unusual dishes. It is unlikely that my life will get worse if I do not try something exotic there.

08:11. At work. I am correcting the comments of the normative control on POB, PON. I give it further for approval.

While there is free time, you can fill out the questionnaire for the competition. I would like to describe the principle of functioning in a popular science style. I will leave a more lively version of the description for presentation before the commission.

In my student days, I was of the opinion that it was necessary to “load” the commission with technical nuances so that they would be imbued with the complexity and importance of the topic. In fact, this makes the listeners mortally bored, and they let everything fall on deaf ears. Now I try to explain it as clearly as possible so that the listeners absorb as much information as possible, and I am always glad to ask in-depth questions from those who are interested.

09:20. I am starting the third set of PON, POB. Well, it’s a simple matter. We take some decent analogue and remake it in accordance with the technical specifications for the current device. Letter for letter according to TK. Even if it is a bug, then someday an addendum will be released to it, and we will correct our document. Even if the author is a creative person and wants to add a little of his vision to the text, it’s not necessary, just believe me.

Sometimes the text comes across GOSTs, OSTs, STOs, RDs, which do not fit at all. Moreover, they may be documents for official use and, accordingly, not be available on these Internets of yours. Then you need to take them under the signature, study them at the workplace and do not forget to return them. It is useful to write down their names somewhere so as not to run around again.

When everything has been worked out according to the content of the document – without fanaticism, because there will still be changes at the approval stage – you can start processing. The good news is that we already know all the wishes of standard control, we do everything from experience. Bad: the process of transferring tables and bringing reference normative documents into the list does not become less dull.

Well, with these documents, we still passed the metrological service – those guys are generally strangling. For example, they may find fault: “Your units of measurement in the name of the purchased product in English are not specified according to the standard.”

12:05. I submitted the documents for approval, I fill out the application form for the competition.

15:20. Rolled out comments, corrected.

16:45. I go home, on the way I buy hummus at Tasteville. −240 R

17:55. The advance has arrived. +27 350 Р

Bought six lots of FXUS on IIS, took the missing amount – 8400 R – from the savings account. I want to reduce the share of the Russian market in my portfolio, so I haven’t been buying it lately. I do not write it down in expenses.

Paid for operator services. I have Beeline. −423 R

Sent a request for closing a credit card – it will happen in 45 days. I close early so as not to incur a maintenance fee that will be charged after 74 days.

For an additional credit card, Alfa-Bank gives a small credit limit, only 50,000 R, and does not increase it over time, and the annual service fee is 1,000 R, so it makes sense to use it only during the free period.

Against the backdrop of Raiffeisen, which issues up to six credit cards with free service in one hand, Alfa-Bank’s offers somehow pale, and the debt load is not rubber: in a neglected case, they may refuse to issue a card, even if you have the highest credit rating.

18:40. Dinner. It would be necessary to show some activity on the “Courcer” so as not to fly out. I’m taking the first week of the “Mathematics and Python for Data Analysis” course.

21:20. I didn’t discover anything new for myself, but it took two and a half hours to watch the video at double speed, complete tests and do homework. I am taking this course because repetition is the mother of learning. Well, you need a certificate.

I open Stepik, finish point 2.7.

22:06. I turn on Esperoza – Esperoza. Separating the GDT windings, assembling a circuit to test it.

I connected the GDT to the DRSSTC driver, and the oscilloscope probes to the output windings of the transformer I watch the signals from the GDT at idle: they should be identical, but go in antiphase

So we got to the thing without which it would be impossible to continue working on the project .

The driver performs the function of generating control signals for power transistors based on feedback signals from the primary circuit. I took the UD2.7 driver as the basis for my development – the development of the Steve Ward circuit, widely known in the coiler community.

I did it in a minimalist style: I removed the entire digital part into one programmable logic chip (CPLD), in the analog part I take both feedback signals from one current transformer – an original solution, the external interrupter also migrated to CPLD, albeit with the loss of part of the functionality. I halved the output part, removed the voltage control on the power bus.

All this goodness is controlled from an application on a smartphone via bluetooth, as in Simpledriver, the most advanced Tesla coil driver today.

Hardware description language is a funny thing. You write code for yourself, as usual, you don’t touch anyone. Then you run the synthesis of the circuit, and suddenly – bam! The circuit is crammed with multiplexers, counters, state machines, and so on. Where did all this evil come from?

Well, these are all jokes, but, of course, in the development process, one must clearly understand what this or that design will be embodied in. Before synthesis, test programs are necessarily launched to check the correct functioning of the circuit. The finished piece of iron is also not complete without testing: you need to catch all the bugs before connecting the driver to the power unit, otherwise each error will hit the wallet. In low-level development, there are more opportunities to “shoot yourself in the foot”.

22:58. Hang up.

06:45. Rise, breakfast – everything is as usual.

08:14. At work. Correcting PON, POB. I am helping a colleague print an A2 × 4 diagram from Compass on a plotter. A plotter is such an advanced printer for printing large format sheets.

10:10 am. We needed an industry standard for official use. I went to the archive, but they said that the document was on hand. I went to the person who took him, but he went off to smoke. I had to wait.

10:20. That colleague returned and replied that he had already submitted the document.

Returned to the archive. I began to look for the standard together with the archive worker, they found it on the third attempt.

13:00. Lunch is as usual.

13:30. It is necessary to make an angry memo to metrologists, otherwise they don’t look at the document for two weeks. Their job is to cling to everything with or without reason, that’s why they check everything for so long.

The service didn’t help much in the end, but our conscience is clear.

16:30. After the rain, the stuffiness is unbearable. At the end of the day, it is no longer working. 80% humidity is no joke.

16:45. I went home, took kefir in Vkusville. −141 R

17:50. Put hercules to brew. I repaid the credit card “110 days without interest” from Raiffeisenbank – I took 85,000 R from the account. Tomorrow I will withdraw money from her again, add it from the account and pay off the credit card from Alfa-Bank for 150,000 R. I do not write it down as expenses.

18:16. I have dinner, study the random forest machine learning model in the Stepika course.

22:06. Today I am making a current transformer for my coil.

23:02. Everything is not right and wrong. First I dug up the old transformer. I wanted to use it, but the transformation ratio turned out to be completely inappropriate.

I started to wind a new one, but the required number of turns does not fit on it. I need to buy bigger rings.

Do you want a challenging career path that will propel you into something in engineering that requires a lot of dedication? Want to find out which companies pay the highest salaries for automotive engineers and expand your knowledge? You are in the right place.

There are several companies in the automotive industry where you can earn a decent, competitive salary even as an entry-level or recent automotive engineering graduate. Why not introduce you to the leading US automotive engineering companies and find out what you need to know about them?

Contents

What is automotive technology?

According to Wikipedia, automotive engineering is the field of mechanical engineering that integrates the mechanical, electronic, electrical, software, and safety components to be used in the design and manufacture of automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles.

In addition, this area of technology includes extensive research and direct use of mathematical models and formulas.

In addition, a person is said to have studied automotive engineering at a university if he designs, develops, manufactures and tests automotive components from the concept stage to the production stage.

Development, production and production are the three main tasks performed in this branch of technology.

Who is an automotive engineer?

A person who designs automotive components and systems is known as an automotive engineer. This expert makes sure that the car designs he creates meet the budget and standard requirements.

Just as mechanical engineers study and work to fix undiscovered flaws in their designs, automotive engineers control the production of automobiles.

However, some of the job responsibilities of an automotive engineer are listed below.

  • Research, development and production of vehicles and parts
  • Integrating design requirements and cost estimates
  • Planning and drawing
  • Monitoring the energy, environmental and safety elements of a project
  • Using computer models to predict the behavior of a vehicle or its components in various circumstances.
  • Increasing the number of test reports
  • Exploring product failures
  • Review, evaluate and analyze technical data for reports
  • Manage technicians and work closely with other engineers
  • Interact with other professionals.

An automotive engineer can also teach seminars for university students who specialize in automotive engineering.

How to Become an Automotive Engineer

You can become an Automotive Engineer through an apprenticeship, but if you want to earn a high salary as an Automotive Engineer, you must get a certified university auto engineer certificate.

  • Enroll in an undergraduate program (University of Automotive Engineering)
  • Take part in an internship
  • Explore employment opportunities
  • Explore continuing education opportunities
  • Get a license
  • Consider getting a master’s degree

Automotive Engineer Salary

The amount paid to an Automotive Engineer varies depending on their level of knowledge in the industry.

Therefore, a brief analysis of several years of experience will be provided.
Automotive engineers with 1 to 4 years of experience earn an average salary of $74,299 per year, and engineers with 9 to 5 years of experience earn an average salary of $5,500 per year.

In addition, people with 10 to 19 years of work experience earn about $91,104 per year. It’s important to remember that Payscale designed this for you. Job opportunities in automotive engineering continue to grow, making it one of the most lucrative in the economy.

However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 2018 to 2028, the employment of automotive engineers is expected to show little or no change, which is likely to have an impact on the salaries of automotive engineers.

Let’s look at the analysis we got from some car companies and how much they pay their car engineers to clarify.

  • Chrysler Group LLC. – $88K
  • FCA Corp – $77K
  • Ford Motor Company – $91k
  • General Motors Corporation – $85k. A university certificate in automotive sales is equally an addition to your portfolio and attracts the high paying salary of automotive engineers.

Leading automotive engineering companies in the USA

Automotive engineers tend to be very passionate about their work, as most of them started their careers modifying or repairing old gasoline-powered cars, which, to be honest, often broke down. The automotive industry is fast approaching the point where internal combustion engines will be heavily phased out.

Air polluting vehicles face increasingly stringent deadlines and fines in major cities around the world. The complex, noisy and often dirty mechanical hearts of automobiles are being replaced by simple, quiet and clean electric motors.

The following are automotive engineering companies that are a dream job for many automotive engineers.

    1. Tesla

This is not a problem. Tesla is constantly in the news for both positive and negative reasons. The positives are the beautifully designed cars that look more like an Apple product than a car. The downsides include unmet production targets, dubious offline features, and the often bizarre tweeting antics of its visionary leader, Elon Musk. Tesla set a goal of making electric vehicles popular, and they mostly succeeded as their vehicles are now a common sight on the streets. Electric vehicles are not a new technology, but they have long lagged behind internal combustion engines due to the limited capacity of batteries to store energy.

Tesla is known as a challenging yet rewarding place to work, and it provides a front-row seat for the coming electric vehicle revolution. The recent success of the Model 3 and the upcoming Tesla truck and pickup make working at Tesla very attractive.

    Benefits of working at Tesla

    • Challenging work environment; – Advanced technologies in electrified and autonomous vehicles.
    • Elon Musk has made it clear from the start that he wants to get everyone moving towards a cleaner and greener future.
    • Few companies can lay claim to such noble goals.
    • You truly feel like you’re changing the world when you work at Tesla.
    • Automotive and automation engineers at Tesla are among the highest paid in the US.

    2. General Motors

General Motors belongs to the old guard. With classics like the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro C and 1963 Chevrolet Corvette, this was without a doubt the dream workplace of many automotive engineers. GM is a major player in the industry with several brands.

Their main focus is still on vehicles with internal combustion engines, but they are keeping abreast of electric vehicles with models like the Chevy Bolt. Their disadvantage is that they are too large to respond quickly to changing market conditions because they invest huge amounts of capital in their production processes and tools. Don’t worry, despite the looming EV revolution, the ICE car market will be around for many more years to come. If you want to gain experience at a large, well-established company, GM is a good place to start.

Benefits of working with General Motors

    • As an industrial giant, General Motors promises a stable job compared to other automakers.
    • Gender inclusion efforts that are progressive.
    • the entry into the electricity market is gradual, as a business that does not make real efforts in this area will become irrelevant in a few decades.

Job opportunities for automotive engineers at General Motors can be very competitive, but there are still entry-level opportunities for young automotive graduates.

    3. Ford

While GM was a member of the old guard, Ford is the king of the castle. Henry Ford popularized automobiles using advanced manufacturing techniques that are still in use today. With classics like the Ford Mustang, they have come a long way since the Model T. Ford has made a significant transition to electric vehicles, investing US$11 billion in its electric program and committing to bring 20 new electric vehicles to market by 2023. .

Unfortunately, at their core, they are still a company that builds heavy-duty “gasoline-guzzling” trucks like the F150. It should be noted that Ford is turning these mid-range machines into pure machines by offering hybrid and all-electric models. It should be noted that Ford is turning these average cars into clean cars by offering hybrid and all-electric models of this car. So if this is your thing, Ford is the one for you. You’ll also have some job security because Ford is gearing up for a surge in electric vehicles.

    Benefits of working with Ford

    • Ford has been around since the beginning and has a certain prestige in the industry.
    • They have invested heavily in electric vehicles.
    • Automotive engineer competitive salary.

    4. Toyota

Toyota is known for its tenacity; despite the difficulties he faces, he continues to move forward. The reliability of the company is legendary, and, working since 1937 years old, it has become the largest automaker in the world. Toyota makes practical cars that always get the job done. If you want to learn how to build durable cars, Toyota is a good place to start.

With its vast global footprint, Toyota is the most stable company in terms of job security.

    • Toyota is an interesting and enjoyable place to work with a wide range of vehicles and products.
    • If you are an IC enthusiast, Toyota will help you master the cutting-edge technology in this area.
    • Opportunity to gain solid industry experience, especially as an aspiring automotive engineer or university car salesman.

    5. McLaren

Although this is somewhat different from the other, more logical options listed above, it would be wrong not to mention the corporation that most engineers would like to work for. If you follow Formula 4, you know that McLaren is one of the best teams in the field. You may know that today they produce some of the most exquisite cars on the market. Not only that, these vehicles demonstrate an astounding level of performance and sophistication in automotive technology. Since there is no substitute for the rich, deep rumble of the 8-litre twin-turbo V-8, there will always be a market for ICE vehicles. Working for a company that creates such excellence is every engineer’s dream.

Since there is no substitute for the rich, deep rumble of a 4. 0-litre twin-turbo V-8 engine, there will always be a demand for ICE vehicles. Working for a firm that creates such excellence and continues to do so with an ever-growing lineup of incredible cars is every engineer’s dream.

    Benefits

    • If you’ve ever seen a McLaren, you know that just working on such an engineering feat is a privilege in itself.
    • is a leader in the development, testing and optimization of integrated circuit supercars.
    • A job at McLaren, a road car manufacturer, could give you the chance to be an engineer on their F1 team, which the company also owns.

    6. Fisker

Although you don’t believe Tesla’s ads, are you a fan of electric cars with sleek, futuristic looks? If the answer to this question was absolutely yes, Fisker may be perfect for you. Chairman and CEO Fisker has created a range of first-class vehicles for the luxury automotive industry. Even though the firm only develops two car models, as electric vehicles become more common, it has a very real potential to expand its market share.

The benefits of working with Fisker

    • Fisker’s goal is to create a truly sustainable car. For example, one of the features is the use of recycled wood in the interior. This will be the best place for you if it fits your moral compass.
    • The number of open positions at Fisker has increased as the company is currently in a period of growth. Now is the time if you want to accompany them on their quest.

    7. Bertrandt AG

Bertrandt AG offers advanced solutions in many locations for the automotive and aviation industries. The business operates through the Electrical Systems/Electronics, Physical Engineering, and Digital Engineering divisions. Customers like the company’s design services, which include the development of every component of the car. In addition, its powertrain modeling and maintenance services are highly regarded by many industry titans.

Through a strong distribution network and subsidiaries, the company has a presence in Europe, China and the USA. Bertrandt SAS, Bertrandt TechniKum GmbH, Bertrand Services GmbH, Bertrand US, Inc. and Bertrand Aeroconseil GmbH are just some of the subsidiaries of Bertrandt AG. Jobs in automotive engineering at Bertrandt remain among the most sought after.

    Conclusion

The automotive industry offers many jobs for engineers in automotive engineering. Also, considering the transition from how cars are driven to how they are driven, this is probably the most significant period in the history of vehicle design.

The future of the industry lies in electric autonomous vehicles. Numerous tiny start-ups are looking to compete with the big players, which will lead to more job opportunities. The development of mobility is about to kick off, and so companies are paying good money to hire qualified automotive engineers, which has kept the salaries of automotive engineers going up at a pretty high rate.
