Recent Review:

The whole family loves this preschool! We love that our little one was embraced with loving arms from the first day at Valley Center. Starting school was such a smooth transition because of the great teachers. All of the teachers have a great curricumlum while nourishing relationships with each child. On weekeds, I am constantly asked why there isn’t any school, because my little on would rather be at school than at home! I am so happy with this school.

Recent Review:

I found Ortega Family Child Care one day as I was driving near Covina when I saw a Van with the name on it. I saved the number and called the owner. From that moment, for me and my son it has been an amazingexperience that we carry in our harts and will never ever forget. We stayed with them for 5 long beautiful years. We sadly had to leave only because I had to move far away in order to be closer to my school and work which was almost two hours far away. Every parent I got to meet, has had a great experience with every single teacher and personal that works at this caregiving, highly educational, nourishing and loving place for our children. Their food is exceptional, the education is always up to date and focuses on every child needs and concerns individually. Everyone including the owner were very warm, friendly, kind, and helpful. There were always amazing and exiting activities, field-trips, and constant learning. Annual studio photos taken for the children and even us parents. The facility is carefully crafted, cleaned and conditioned with tools, toys, bathroom, sleeping area, playground area, and lets not forget our amazing cook and her delicious fresh food served every day. They are always very lenient about following the School District and Daycare policies and procedures and are always up to date. Each child’s needs, safety and education are their priority to were everyone there works hard to create a positive and enduring experience for each child. The owner and her entire work force, are constantly taking workshops, seminars and classes from child care safety to CPR, emergency preparedness, you name it. There is actually a special container placed in the facility, based on specific rules and procedures in the event of an emergency, a disaster or an earthquake. It is filled with with special food and emergency supplies, which I think we should all do the same.
It is my favorite place, I truly commend you to trust your child always be in good hands here. It is simple a unique and special place in every single way because it is simply in their core to love, care for what they do. They simply know what is best and I am sure will continue be an exceptional example hopefully for many many years to come. They are our family, and will continue always be part of our family. Thank you from the bottom of our harts. We miss you!!
You are the best in what you do. Never change!…

Troy – The ancient city of Troy or the legendary Ilion

Ancient Troy or the legendary Ilion

Troy – probably, there are few in the world who have not heard the name of this legendary city at least once in their lives, who have not heard of the famous Trojan horse which dramatically changed the course of Trojan War . Starting from Homer’s Iliad , which describes the fifty-one days of the last year of the Trojan War , about Troy a lot has been said and written. Troy has always interested and continues to interest a variety of scientists: archaeologists, historians, writers and local historians. Did you know that Troy is located in Turkey?

The Trojan Horse is a symbol of Troy, located at the entrance to the National Historical Park

Where is Troy located? Troy on the map

Troy ” and “ Ilion ” are two different names for the same mighty city in Asia Minor, at the entrance from the Aegean Sea to Strait Dardanelles (Hellespont) . The city was located on an ancient maritime trade route that connected the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Troy dominated the strait and this allowed the city to become a key center of trade between East and West during the Bronze Age.

Troy on the map of Turkey

Location of Troy

According to Homer , the river Scamander and Simois flowed near the city. The river Scamander (tour. Karamenderes) originates on the slopes of mountains Ida , which are now called Kaz-Dag. When Troy was first founded, it was located on the shores of the bay of the same name. But what we see today is no longer a bay, but a large plain, because the alluvial sediments of the rivers Scamander and Simois gradually accumulated and for many centuries these river sediments practically filled the bay. Today, the ruins of ancient Troy are located in Turkey, 30 km from the city of Canakkale, not far from the village of Tevfikiye .

Excavations of Troy and “Priam’s Treasure”

For a long time, the very existence of Troy was considered a myth or an invention of Homer, and no one knew the exact location of Troy . The geographical descriptions given in Homer’s Iliad led some scholars to suggest that the ruins of Troy may be in the northwest of Asia Minor, somewhere at the entrance to the Dardanelles (on the territory of modern Turkey ). In 1870, the famous self-taught archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann , having received permission from the then Ottoman authorities, began excavation in the northwestern part of the hill Hissarlik (near the city Canakkale ). On May 31, 1873, , Schliemann discovered a treasure, which he hastily named “Priam’s Treasure.” Later it turned out that this is not “Priam’s Treasure” , because the age of the treasure was a thousand years older than the times described by the blind poet Homer .

According to the permission of the Ottoman government for the right to excavate Hissarlik , Schliemann was obliged to transfer half of the finds to the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul. But he hid the treasures from the Turkish authorities and smuggled them to Greece. In 1881, after unsuccessful attempts to sell the treasures to the largest museums in the world, Schliemann donated them to the city of Berlin, and this allowed him to become an honorary citizen of Berlin. Since 1945, Trojan treasure , taken as a trophy during the Second World War, is located in Moscow in the Pushkin Museum im. A.S. Pushkin.

Many still doubt that Schliemann discovered that same Troy , but one way or another, most scientists today are inclined to believe that Schliemann was still right, “Troy has been excavated, and there is no second one.”

Troy Attractions

Due to its strategic location, after every devastating war or devastating earthquake, the city was restored and life in Troy began again. That is why these days0004 archaeological object represents nine main cultural layers that belong to different eras. Troy is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Turkey and in the world, and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Modern science has 9 main cultural layers of Troy

Cultural layers of Troy

Troy I

The most ancient archaeological traces of Troy date back to 2900 – 2500 BC e. Troy I was a small settlement and even in the prime of its existence was only 100 m in diameter. Despite its modest size, Troy I had a fortress with massive walls, gates and towers made of unhewn stone. This settlement existed for almost five centuries and, most likely, was destroyed by fire.

Troy II

Despite the fact that Troy I was destroyed by fire, which arose on the site of the ashes Troy II represents the revival of the lost city. The second cultural layer of Troy (2500-2300 BC) is one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the Early Bronze Age. Many treasures were discovered in this layer, including the treasure discovered by Schliemann, which he hastily called “Priam’s Treasure”. All these treasures of gold, silver, bronze and copper speak of active trading activity in the city. However, Troy II also collapsed, but as a result of a sudden attack, as evidenced by the discovered traces of intentional destruction.

Remains of a megaron (a simple type of temple) of Troy II – 2nd millennium BC e.

Troy III, IV and V

Troy III, IV and V are already larger settlements that existed from 2300-1800. BC e. Over the centuries, the citadel of the city has grown, but there are no concrete traces of the development of the city, on the contrary, traces of the decline of the city were found. In these settlements, groups of small houses are already observed, standing right next to each other, separated by small streets. Troy V was again destroyed by fire.

In the southwestern part of Troy there is a sanctuary with wells

Troy VI and VII

During this period a new royal palace-citadel was built in Troy. In size, the new citadel surpassed not only the old one, but any other in western Asia Minor. Built of hewn stone and reinforced with massive towers, the new fortress walls of the city were 4 to 5 meters thick. All this testifies to wealth, prosperity and power Troy in this period. But large vertical faults on the fortress wall in the VIth cultural layer of Troy (1800-1250 BC) , indicate that a strong earthquake occurred. After the earthquake, on the site of the destroyed settlement, life began to emerge again. The Trojan War and the events mentioned by Homer in the Iliad refer to either Troy VI or Troy VII (1250-1025 BC).

Fortress walls of Homeric Troy (Troy VI or VII)

Troy VIII and IX

According to modern scientists, Troy abandoned after the war was settled by the Greeks 250 years later, that is, during the life of Homer. At first, a small settlement arose on the site of old Troy, then the city grew. On the territory of Troy there was a temple of Athena, as well as a sanctuary for sacrifices (900-85 BC). According to Arrian (ancient Greek historian and geographer), Alexander the Great made a pilgrimage to Troy and visited the temple of Athena. From the temple of Athena, only a few fragments of altars and marble fragments have come down to us. With the growth of the power of the Roman state, a legend arose that it was the descendants of the Trojan Aeneas who founded Rome . Therefore, the Romans honored Troy . Gaius Julius Caesar ordered the expansion of the temple of Athena after his visit there in 48 BC. Augustus, who replaced him, also ordered the construction of a boulevterion (council hall) and an odion for musical performances in the “sacred Ilion”.

The ancient city of Troy | World Tourism

Thanks to Homer, Troy is without a doubt the most popular and perhaps the most famous archaeological site in Turkey. The remains of the ancient city, known by the Turkish name Truva, are located 20 kilometers south of Canakkale, west of the main highway. They are a rather pathetic sight, but if you lower your expectations and call upon your imagination, it can still make the right impression on you.

Today the ruins are not as run down as they used to be. With the help of modern scientific methods, fragments lost during previous excavations have been restored. The work that was carried out under the direction of Dr. Manfred Korfman helped to understand the plan of the area to such an extent that, at least, its general scheme became clear and an understanding of which settlements were located here at different historical times appeared.

A Brief History of Troy

Until 1871, it was believed that Troy existed only in legends. The Troad plain, on which the ruins lay, was associated with Troy described by Homer in the Iliad, but all traces of the city had already completely disappeared by that time. In 1868, the German businessman Heinrich Schliemann (1822-189) who had grown rich in America0 years) received permission from the Ottoman government to begin excavations on a hill known in Turkey as Hisarlik, where the remains of a classical temple and signs of even more ancient structures had already been found.

South Gate of Troy VI

Schliemann was born into a poor family in Mecklenburg and at an early age began to get involved in the legends and myths of Ancient Greece. Unable to study history professionally (although he taught himself ancient Greek in addition to several modern languages), he amassed a considerable fortune during the California gold rush of 1849.year, at the age of 46 he abandoned commerce and became the most famous and celebrated amateur archaeologist in the world.

Schliemann’s careless work resulted in significant damage to the excavation site, which was somewhat smoothed out by the first professional archaeologist working in Troy, Carl William Blegen, who arrived in Troy in 1932. Schliemann found the so-called Priam Treasure, a large cache of fine jewelry, which was taken to Berlin and exhibited there until 1941 years old when it was hidden for safety somewhere under the Zoo subway station.

Trojan horse

In May 1945, after the Red Army captured Berlin, the treasure was lost. For a long time it was suspected that he was taken to the USSR, and in August 1993 it magically appeared in Moscow. Today, there is a struggle between Germany and the Russian Federation for the legal recognition of the treasure as belonging to one country or another. Simultaneously with the trial, a thorough examination of the jewelry is taking place to determine whether it was fraudulently collected by Schliemann from various excavation sites in Asia Minor. Whatever the shortcomings of Schliemann’s work, his first haphazard excavations uncovered nine layers that clearly demonstrated the successive growth of the city over four millennia.

The very first layer, Troy I, dates back to 3600 BC. It is followed by four more layers of similar settlements. It is believed that Homer described Troy IV or Troy VII: the first was destroyed by an earthquake around 1275 BC, the second was badly damaged by a fire about a quarter of a century later. It is to this time that historians usually attribute the events of the Trojan War. Troy VIII, which reached its peak between 700 and 300 BC, was Greek, and most of the structures of Troy IX (300 BC – 300 AD) were built during the glory days of the Roman Empire.

Although it is not certain whether the Trojan War actually took place, there are ample indications that the city was indeed the scene of some kind of military conflict, even if it was not the ten-year confrontation between the two armies described by Homer in the Iliad. It is possible that the epic of Homer is based on the fact of the many years of struggle between the Mycenaean Greeks and the inhabitants of Troy, who were either trading partners or commercial rivals. Homer’s version of events turned this shaky world into a full-blown heroic drama, in which even the ancient Greek gods took part.

Ancient ruins of Troy

Troy excavation site

The excavation site (open to the public in May-September, 8.00-19.00, in October-April – 8.00-17.00) is indicated by the final stop of dolmush and the ticket office with the inscription “Gise”. It’s a good idea to buy two small books with Dr. Manfred Korfmann’s A Tour of Troia map in the little shop at the entrance, which will help you navigate the area and offer information labeled with numbers corresponding to one or another of the objects depicted in the pictures.

From the ticket office, a long, straight road leads to a giant wooden horse (which would have delighted Aunt Dot in Rose Macaulay’s novel) and the excavation house, which features a scale model of the area and a great video about the history of Troy and the archaeological work going on here. Further there is the ruined city itself, which stretches to the sea for 8 kilometers. A circular path runs along it with twelve diagrams to help you navigate the terrain.

The excavation is a rather pale sight, and you leave it convinced that there is really little left in Troy. However, when you stand on the ramparts and look at the plain stretching at your feet, it is not at all difficult to imagine the camp of the legendary Greek army besieging the city below. The most impressive surviving remnants of the city are the east wall and the gates of Troy VI (1700-1275 BC), 330 meters around the city from the east and south.

Wall ruins in Troy II

Inward-sloping walls 6 meters high and over 4 meters wide had to be lined with an additional top layer of brick. The ramparts are lined with flat stone slabs of Troy II (2500-2300 BC), which used to pave the road to the entrance to the citadel. Somewhere nearby, Schliemann found the treasure of Priam, which he used as evidence that he had found precisely Homeric Troy.

In fact, this statement was erroneous, and Troy II, who died in the fire, had nothing to do with Homer. Inside the fortress there is an impressive building of the House with columns from the times of Troy VI. The most important monument of Roman Troy IX, or Ilion, is the temple of Athena, restored by Alexander the Great according to the promise he made to his commander Lysimachus after he visited the sanctuary and left his weapons as a gift to the gods. The remains of the temple found by Schliemann confirmed that it had a Doric order.

Fragments of its ceiling can still be seen here, but the most famous relief of the temple, which depicts Apollo pacifying four hooving stallions, is today in Berlin. The remains of two more sanctuaries located in the west of the excavation indicate that Troy was an important religious center during the time of the Greeks and Romans. These temples were also restored after Alexander the Great visited the city. Since the layout of the sanctuaries is similar to that of the temple in Pergamon, it is believed that the goddesses Cybele and Demeter were worshiped here.

Recommendations for visiting Troy

The best place to visit the excavations of Troy is from Canakkale. A couple of local tour companies organize guided tours there for about 30 lire. In their offices they may tell you that no dolmush go to Troy. In fact, they go there from Canakkale every twenty minutes. Their final stops are near the minibus garage, opposite the market on Atatürk Street, and in the village of Tefvikiye, right at the entrance to the excavation site. The trip takes only half an hour.

If you are traveling further south, it is best to take the Troja-Canakkale minibus to the intersection with the main road, and from there change to any southbound bus. In Tefvikia, there is an overpriced Hisarlik Inn with a restaurant and bar located in front of the ticket office on the road leading to the excavation site.

  • Alexandria Troas

At Ezine, 20 kilometers south of Troy, a highway branches off the main road that heads towards the coast and after 15 kilometers leads to another grand excavation site, the ancient city of Alexandria Troas.
