A Word from Our Owner
I am a professional teacher that’s always wanted my own school. After I had my middle son, I wanted to stay home with him, so I (with the steadfast support of my husband) decided to start infant care and preschool program from my home. We have now expanded to a child care center environment! I have a heart for children and a passion for teaching. My goal is to give every child the solid foundation he or she needs to be successful. I have high hopes and expectations for the children entrusted to my care.

“Drugs and gunfights – this is what my usual day looked like”
Mikhail Lapidus, a police officer from the US of Russian origin, came to Pushchino with a speech and gave a frank interview to our publication.
Recently, an unusual meeting took place in the Pushchino Central Cultural Center “Vertical”. Residents of the science city talked with the now famous blogger Mikhail Lapidus. In the 90s, the man emigrated with his family to America, where he subsequently lived for 24 years. Fate decreed that for 16 years Mikhail worked as a police officer in the city of Oakland, California. During his professional career, he has been a patrolman, forensic scientist, and head of a children’s room. The Russian-American cop told the Oki-info correspondent about how he was met by the New World and about the peculiarities of working in the unofficial criminal capital of the state. True, instead of an interview, a monologue turned out.
— I was born and raised in Samara. Until the eighth grade, he studied there at a school with an English bias. Mom insisted, but I didn’t like it, so after the 8th grade I went to college, after which I entered a pedagogical university. I wanted to teach history.
In the 1990s, confusion began in the USSR, they stopped paying salaries. Relatives from my father’s side, who lived in the United States for a long time, invited us to permanent residence. All our lives we huddled in a communal apartment, shared living space with cockroaches and two other families. Father – a famous engineer, did not get out of VDNKh, had a bunch of patents, but all the merits were taken by his party boss with the “correct” surname. We were also “knocked over” with a queue for the car. Mother is a teacher with an allied name, an apartment was intended for her, but her supervisor got it. So to speak, we accumulated and we submitted all the documents necessary for departure to the embassy. AT 92nd exit approved. I did not want to leave the country, I am a patriot. For the sake of my grandmother and parents, for the sake of decency, they asked my opinion, but I perfectly understood that without them I had nothing to do here.
***
— At that time, we were told on television and on the radio how well people live in free America and how bad things are here. The myth was quickly dispelled.
We flew out in October 1992, it was already snowing and it was cold. In Los Angeles, we were met by the sun, the weather was +30. That’s where the pluses end. There was an economic crisis in the United States, the riots associated with the beating of Rodney King had just ended, half the city was completely burned (we are talking about the Los Angeles riot, which caused the death of 53 people – ed. note). We don’t really know the language, there is no money, there is no work, whites are oppressed – in some areas it was impossible to appear at all, they could be soaked simply for the light color of the skin.
On one of the first days, when we were standing in line to pass the mandatory medical examination for all migrants, some Mexicans tried to rob us. Theft was commonplace. But it’s been worse. Once, in search of work, I was waiting for a bus, which, by the way, in the USA always runs on time. At a stop right at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and the Highlands (now it has been redone, then there were heaps of garbage, drunks, drug addicts and prostitutes lying around) a mass brawl broke out between gangs of blacks and Mexicans. A crowd of people with crowbars, chains and weapons fought to the death, the locals fled, and I did not know what to do, I just stood and waited for my bus. Not kneaded – lucky.
***
— For several months we were helped by special semi-commercial services, they gave us free food that was past its expiration date. They did it in order to get tax breaks.
We had enough savings to pay a deposit and pay for a month’s rent in the cheapest apartment in the West Hollywood area. It was a real garbage dump where poor immigrants from the Soviet Union lived. Some of our compatriots still remain in these quarters, it is more convenient for them. There are even shop signs in Russian, Russian TV broadcasts. But in order to achieve at least something and get a good job in a foreign country, you need to know the language, and know it well.
At that time it was impossible to get a job officially, at that time, according to the law, a US citizen had to pay a minimum of $ 4. 25 per hour, excluding taxes and insurance. In the emigrant environment, of course, this was not practiced, they paid much less – about two dollars in cash. I worked handouts, I folded T-shirts in the dye house, I came home with purple hands that couldn’t be washed. At the same time attended language classes in college, free of charge. I found people who could pay for my education.
A few months later he got a job in a restaurant run by Armenians. Good people already adapted to capitalism. My mother, for example, could not work there, because she is a Soviet person who is not used to the fact that a business has an owner who indicates what, how and when to do it. They paid a little there, but enough to live on, plus they were allowed to take food home.
***
The first few years there was a terrible nostalgia, I wanted to go back, and the difficult conditions of American life contributed to this even more. No friends, no one to talk to. Talking on the phone was very expensive, 2 minutes of communication was worth as much as an hour of my work. He wrote letters, something came through, something did not. After emigrating, I visited Russia again at 94th, for family reasons. Stayed here for three weeks. By this time, there was already real devastation in the country and I realized that I would not return here again. And the next 21 years he lived in the States.
I got married in 1996, and the next year my son was born. The family had to be supported by something, completely different incomes were required. I came across an announcement: there is a mass recruitment to the police. By this time, citizenship had already been issued. I came, filled out a “letter of interest” in Auckland, after which I was invited for testing, a polygraph, a medical board and other exams. Then silence – no one called back or wrote. He spat, filed documents with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. When they found out that I was Russian-speaking, they jumped to the ceiling, because almost 700 thousand people out of the population of the district are immigrants from the CIS. According to the law, after graduating from the academy, a person must work in prison for two years. But the department was interested in me, as this would allow them to save on a translator, so they issued a paper, according to which my work in prison is reduced to 8-9months. I passed most of the exams, when suddenly I got a call from Auckland. It turned out that there was a snag in the piece of paper about education. I found a school, passed the test, and was accepted into the Oakland Police Academy.
***
— The academy trains for six months, then three more are field tests. 34 people entered with me, 21 reached the field, three more were eliminated later. There were thieves. A relative of one of the city officials, who weighed twice as much as me, really wanted a place in the police. Even upon admission, she was canceled physical tests, motivated by the fact that she would pull herself up during training. Eventually she flew out. They really teach, if they fight, then for real, they use the same pepper spray as in real work.
I remember well my first day on patrol. I come to the room for formations, all the veterans are already sitting, according to the sign, newcomers cannot sit down without permission until all the old people are seated. The curator introduced me to a mentor, a Filipino boxer. I went to get the car keys, shotgun, papers. We got into the car, I told him: “Yes, sir. No sir. And he told me: “Tie up with formality, so we communicate only in public. Let’s agree that for a couple of days you just sit and look at me and do nothing else. It took me two hours. As a result, by the end of the first shift, I already taxied, wrote a report, and even arrested one type. Immediately sang with a mentor. However, the officer considered that a team that works so well will bring many problems. And after the probationary period, I was sent to another district.
Then the real work began with a 10-hour work schedule.
***
— Auckland is a city where everything is done through one place. The former governor ruined the state by signing a law to close the military base and production located on the territory. Then half of the population was left without work and switched to drugs, alcohol, theft and prostitution.
Historically, Oakland has a high crime rate, the city has the highest homicide rate in California and tenth in the United States among cities with a population of more than 250,000 people. Gunfights between gang members are common, I’ve been involved in several myself. In broad daylight they can kill someone on the main street.
Auckland has a large black population. At the beginning of the 20th century, Chrysler factories opened there, shipyards worked in the port, and ships were built. The peak of the city’s development fell on the period of the Second World War. The “whites” working there went to the front. There were vacancies left, where people rushed from all over America, mainly from the southern states, and these are mostly blacks. When the war ended and the former residents returned, they wanted their jobs back. Conflicts began, many blacks were fired on the principle of segregation.
The decline of the shipbuilding industry aggravated the situation. The western part of the city, adjacent to the port, became poorer and poorer due to lack of work. People began to move to the eastern part, where automobile and tractor factories were located. But over time, this industry also left the city, and Auckland gained notoriety.
The standard of living was falling, because of the large port, which is difficult to control by the authorities, the supply of drugs from Southeast Asia and Mexico improved. Criminal groups began to organize themselves, for example, the world-famous Hells Angels motorcycle gang has its own branch in Auckland, it even includes lawyers and doctors. In general, murders, drugs, prostitution and theft – this is the usual shift of a California police officer.
Recently, a lot has changed, before drug traffickers ran away when they heard the sound of a siren, now you can drive close to them and they do not pay attention. All because of the imperfection of the legislation, every action of a policeman can be challenged and crime takes advantage of this. The press inflates such stories, I know many examples.
***
When I entered the academy, the rules were stricter. Now liberalism rules, when recruiting there are conditions according to which a certain number of people must get into the group by race, gender, even by sexual orientation. To not hurt anyone. They take advantage of this, “rotten apples” seep in, but they are quickly kicked out.
There was a woman who did not like to pay for herself in a cafe. She came, took coffee, showed the badge and that’s it. Then she was fired. Once an officer wanted to buy a car at auction, when a higher price was offered for it, he took out a gun, started waving it and shouting that he was from the police and the car should go to him. He doesn’t work anymore.
There is a lot of talk in Russia about bribes. There is no such thing in the States, at least among the police. For 16 years of work, no one offered me money, this is a crime, the policeman will not take it. He earns decently, he has insurance, including dental and oculist services, vacation, career growth. No one wants to lose all this because of a crumpled hundred dollar bill. A normal person values his job, I really liked working in the police, even the worst day on patrol is much better than the best day at the office.
***
— I retired in 2015. There was a lot of free time. I visited Russia. Moscow has changed a lot, it has become beautiful. Honestly, now even in the largest city in America, you can’t walk the streets at night without incident. You can. And Samara, on the contrary, became worse. When we left, it was a green city, now there are ugly new buildings all around and people are fighting over parking spaces.
In 2017, Dmitry Puchkov, better known as Goblin, invited me to an interview for his channel. Our video has over 700,000 views. Dmitry Yuryevich said that it would be nice for me to start my own channel, especially since I have something to tell.

Renton Child Care | Renton Daycare
Welcome to Kiddie Adventures Early Learning and Development Center, a quality learning center located in Renton, Washington – an innovative and affordable concept in childcare and preschool education. We are dedicated to providing the best care for your child while encouraging an environment filled with fun and education.
Our center consists of the following two programs: Early Care and Education, and Child Development Program. Kiddie Adventures’ core mission is to provide high-quality, infant and early childhood mental health informed, and developmentally appropriate childcare in a nurturing, safe, and supportive environment.
What is Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) informed approach?
This approach is rooted in the belief that social and emotional development is the foundation of all learning. It is through social and emotional development that young children establish the building blocks for growth and understanding of the world around them. The early interpersonal relationships a child experiences play a crucial role in shaping their understanding of the world. Our program is built on the foundation of fostering positive relationships based on mutual respect and valuing the unique individuality of each child. We believe that all children should have access to the tools and skills needed to participate in meaningful relationships and activities with their peers, teachers, parents, and others.
We provide child care for infants up to school-age children, with planned activities tailored to support age-appropriate growth and development. Our center is designed to create a positive and nurturing environment for both children and parents.
Our full-time childcare center offers finest facilities for children from 6 weeks to Kindergarten. Our kindergarten program is specially designed for 4-1/2 to 5-year-olds to prepare them for the critical school years ahead. We also offer an extensive school-age program for before and after school, with planned activities to keep children engaged and challenged, with age-appropriate groupings for children between 5 to 7 and 8 to 12 years old.
Highlights:
Choices from a child’s perspective:
Kiddie Adventures is a child-centered center, recognizing that responsive, consistent, sensitive, and nurturing relationships with adults are crucial for a child’s growth and future success. We focus on providing a compassionate and relationship-based childcare experience where the child is at the center, and every aspect is viewed from the child’s perspective. We believe that when everyone involved, including parents, caregivers, community members, and educators, consider the child’s development from this perspective, the child will not only thrive, but also inspire positive change for the entire community.
A trauma-informed approach that focuses on social and emotional development:
At Kiddie Adventures, we understand the vital role that responsive caregiving relationships and emotional regulation play in a child’s learning and development. We recognize the importance of early identification of any factors that may impede learning. Despite the best efforts of caregivers, traumatic events, neglect, and poverty can all have a detrimental impact on a child’s development. Our teaching staff undergo regular training and coaching on creating healthy classroom environments that foster social and emotional development for all children.

Longfellow 45/15 Non-School Enrichment Days
SACC will accommodate the 45/15 day schedule. Non-School Enrichment Days will be offered during the 15-days off schedule for Longfellow children. A collaboration of agencies will provide programming for the 15-days off. Longfellow break registration will be available online to families in advance of the Non-School Enrichment Days.
Inclement Weather Days
When school is closed all day due to weather conditions, SACC may be available from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM at the Northrop Education Center. If all District buildings are closed, care will NOT be available.
If children require medication while attending School Age Child Care, you must check “Yes” for the Release of Information (question 13) on the registration page.
SACC will accept EpiPens and Inhalers, but does not administer daily scheduled prescription medication during AM or PM SACC. If your child will need a daily scheduled prescription medication on our Non-School days, SACC will then administer the medication, however, you must provide a Medication Authorization signed by the provider. You must also provide all emergency care plans (if needed) before you will be allowed to schedule SACC care.
Children with special dietary needs must contact Student Nutrition Services at (507) 328-4218 for accommodations.
School Age Child Care does have a nurse available to answer any questions or address , please email or (507) 328-4046. See the SACC Parent/Guardian Handbook for further information.
Standards
Program standards for the School Age Child Care (SACC) Program are adapted from guidelines developed by the Minnesota Department of Education and have been reviewed and approved by the School Board of the Rochester Public School District.
Staff Responsibilities
The SACC Program is staffed with caring people who have experience in various fields. Background checks, first aid, CPR training, and continued staff development through workshops and trainings are required of all staff. Each SACC site is staffed with at least one Program Lead who is responsible for overseeing the operation of the program. Program Assistants are trained to assume Program Lead responsibilities in their absence, and otherwise assume numerous responsibilities toward the operation of the site. Program Aides may also be included as part of the site team. They have a very important role of spending most of their time directly with children. Special Needs Assistants will be assigned to sites as needed. Team Leader Inclusion Specialists will be available to assist with children and staffing needs. Each site is overseen by a Team Leader who directs and guides the staff in general site operation, including communication, challenging behavior, teamwork, scheduling, program planning, etc.
Ratios
SACC strives to maintain staff to child ratios of 1:7/10 for younger children, Kindergarten through 2nd grade, and 1:10/15 for older children, 3th grade through 5th grade. Adjustments may be made according to individual needs.
Breakfast
Summer: Children attending summer SACC will have the option to receive a free breakfast through the Student Nutrition Service’s Summer Feeding Program. A monthly breakfast menu will be posted online.
School Year: Breakfast is only available through Student Nutrition Services for a cost. Call Student Nutrition Service at (507) 328-4218 for further questions regarding the school year Breakfast Program.
Lunch
Summer: All children attending summer SACC will have the option to receive a free hot lunch through the Student Nutrition Service’s Summer Feeding Program. Monthly lunch menus will be posted online. Children attending field trips over the lunch hour will receive a free bag lunch including a sandwich, fruit and/or vegetable, small treat, and juice. Children may also choose to bring their own lunch from home if they wish. Refrigeration and microwaves are not available for general use.
Non-School Enrichment Days: Parents or guardians mustprovide a lunch and beverage.
Inclement Weather Days: Parents or guardians must provide a nutritious bag lunch and beverage–lunch is not available at SACC. Refrigeration and microwaves are not available for general use.
Snacks
Summer: No morning snack is served during the Summer Program. Children will receive a healthy snack and beverage in the afternoon.
School Year: Children will be offered a light morning snack throughout the morning until 8:30 AM during the School Year Program. They may also choose to participate in their school’s Breakfast Program. In the afternoon, children are served a healthy snack with a beverage.
Non-School Enrichment Days and Inclement Weather Days: Children will be offered a light morning snack and an afternoon snack with beverage.
A child may choose to bring a healthy snack of choice from home that can be eaten during snack time. Staff must be made aware of allergies by a parent or guardian on the child’s contract. In accordance with Rochester Public Schools’ policy, any snacks brought by children or staff to share for special occasions must be purchased from a commercial supplier–no home-baked goodies please.
Children with special dietary needs must contact Student Nutrition at (507) 328-4218 for accommodations.
SACC Shirts
For safety reasons, SACC shirts provide staff and child identification.
On Summer and Non-School Enrichment Days, children are strongly encouraged to wear a SACC shirt.
Program shirts are required for all off-site activities and field trips. If a child arrives without a program shirt when required for off-site activities or field trips, parents and guardians have the following options:
Parent or guardian returns home and promptly provides a program shirt for the child.
Staff will provide the child with a program T-shirt, and the parent or guardian will be billed $10.00.
Shirts are available at the SACC Office and may be purchased or billed to the statement. A limited supply of shirts will be available at the summer and Non-School Enrichment Day sites.
T-shirts are $10.00
Children are also encouraged to keep an extra set of clothing in their locker or backpack in case of an accident.
Footwear
Children must wear athletic shoes or regular soft-soled enclosed tie and/or velcro shoes while attending SACC. Clogs, sandals, and crocs are not allowed. Children must wear shoes at all times, except when swimming.
If a child arrives without the proper footwear, the child’s participation in activities will be limited. Sandals are not allowed except at the pool.
Please note the fees below directly are reflective of the 2022-2023 school year.

Note on Deficiencies
Deficiencies are listed in broad categories and are available online for 36 months. We encourage you to contact your region office for an explanation of any of the deficiencies, or for additional information about this facility’s compliance. Resolved “On Site” means that a violation was resolved during the Licensing Specialist’s inspection.
Severity Levels
High:
These are the most serious violations of child care regulations and could pose a risk to the health and safety of children. If you would like an explanation of any of the deficiencies, or would like additional information about this facility’s compliance, please contact your regional office.
Medium:
These are significant violations of child care regulations and could negatively impact the health and safety of children. If you would like an explanation of any of the deficiencies, or would like additional information about this facility’s compliance, please contact your regional office.
Low:
These violations are the least likely to impact health and safety, but they still show that a facility is out of compliance with some child care regulations. If you would like an explanation of any of the deficiencies, or would like additional information about this facility’s compliance, please contact your regional office.
Note on Frequency of Inspections
Centers, Group Homes, and Licensed Family Homes::
In 2014, legislation was passed that changed the number of unannounced visits from two per year to one per year in Child Care Centers, Group Child Care Homes, and Licensed Family Child Care Homes. As a result of this new law, you may see a decrease in the number of deficiencies listed on this website for these types of providers. Unannounced visits are still made in response to a complaint, and visits are scheduled with the facility during the re-licensing process, which occurs every two years.
Registered Family Homes:
Most family homes are registered, not licensed. In 2014, legislation was passed that allows Child Care Licensing to make one unannounced visit to these homes each year. As a result of this new law, you may see an increase in the number of deficiencies listed on this website for Registered Family Child Care Homes. Unannounced visits are still made in response to a complaint. Click here for an overview of each facility and the requirements they must meet according to state law.

On September 16, the artistic director of the Theater of Nations, Yevgeny Mironov, spoke about what the new season will be like in the team he leads.
Evgeny Mironov
Photo: Gennady Cherkasov
Actually, it has already begun. On September 5, the theater went to Tula as part of the Big Tour program, and then took part in the IV International Cultural Forum Golden Mask in Ulyanovsk.
In the upcoming season, the theater will continue experiments with novice authors and directors on the Small Stage. It is there that on September 17 the premiere of the play “#shakespeare’s sonnets” directed by Timofey Kulyabin will take place, which will turn to sonnets dedicated to withering and oblivion. On October 2, the performance “My Anomaly” will be performed by the director, stage designer and choreographer in one person – Mart Kangro from Estonia. This is a co-production of the Kostroma company of modern dance “Dialogue Dance” and the Moscow rock band J.Hellboy. According to Mart Kangro, he is interested not only in the anatomy of the body, but also in its sociality, which does not end beyond our skin. “I am interested in the whole person, as he is, with all his signs, friends, the music he listens to, what he breathes and lives in,” says the director.
Polina Struzhkova, a graduate of the Moscow International Film School and Russian Academy of Theater Arts, will present the Kindergarten of Poems on October 18 based on the poems of the Scottish writer and poet Robert Louis Stevenson. The main role will be played by a young and talented actress Nadezhda Lumpova, who recently made her bright film debut. She starred in the film by Oksana Bychkova “One more year” based on the play by Alexander Volodin “Do not part with your loved ones.” “Kindergarten of Poems” is the first performance at the Theater of Nations addressed to a young audience. As part of the Russian Classics cycle, the December premiere of Russian Romances directed by Dmitry Volkostrelov will take place.
June 2015 is scheduled for the release of Pushkin’s Tales staged by the outstanding director Robert Wilson as part of the same programme. He has already chosen the actors. The lucky ones were: Daria Moroz, Dmitry Serdyuk, Elena Nikolaeva, Oleg Savtsov, Anna Galinova and Alexander Novin. Pushkin the narrator will be played by Yevgeny Mironov. A whole team of Wilson will come to Moscow: German opera director Nicola Panzer, lighting designer A.J. Weisbard, set designer Annick Lavalier and not only them. Rehearsals began back in August at the Robert Wilson Watermill Center near New York. In November they continue in Moscow. The world premiere is scheduled for June 16 at the Theater of Nations. .
The no less famous director Luc Bondy is also invited to the theatre. He turned to Chekhov’s play “Ivanov”.
Work is in full swing on the social-documentary project “The Touched” with the support of the Foundation for the Deaf-Blind-Mute, directed by Ruslan Malikov and playwright Marina Krapivina.
This autumn the Theater of Nations will tour Tbilisi and Yekaterinburg. The performance of the Theater of Nations “Miss Julie” was invited to the prestigious Lincoln Center.

Horrible experience. Not nearly enough staff to take care of children, let alone they seem to not even care about the infants, when they need much love. How they say ” home away from home” is very far fetched. I left my daughter for 40 min there, to come back and see that she had a massive poopie diaper and it was all over her clothes, which she obviously was sitting in for a while. They never change aged her diaper, I did. When I called to check on her, they said she must be hungry even though I had just fed her. All the babies were crying in there enough where boogers were running down there face. I would never try this place again and never recommend it for infants.

NATIONAL ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY – September 22, 2023
National Elephant Appreciation Day is a great time to give these majestic and beautiful creatures the respect they deserve. Elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth, so it’s only right that they have a day completely dedicated to them. Sadly, humans are increasingly placing the elephant’s future at risk. So, whether you’re a lifelong elephant lover or not, take time on September 22 to learn about these amazing pachyderms.
National Elephant Appreciation Day timeline

How to Observe National Elephant Appreciation Day
Visit elephants in the zoo
If you’re lucky, you might get to watch the elephants during feeding time or have the opportunity to ask about what life is like for zoo elephants.
Do elephant arts and crafts
Pop over to your nearest craft store, and you’ll be well on your way to creating adorable masks, handprint art, and even cute T-shirts.
Read about elephants
Make it a point to grab a book that will help you brush up on your elephant trivia.
4 More Reasons To Save The Elephants
Spilled something? Call an elephant to help you pick it up
There’s so much dexterity in an elephant’s trunk —it can pick up the tiniest of particles.
Elephant babies show their independence
Baby elephants, blind shortly after birth, can nonetheless stand up and function quite well.
Old man elephant
Elephants have life expectancies of 50 to 70 years.
The mice myth
They’re not afraid of mice; some African communities actually use elephants to help keep field mice out of crops.
Why National Elephant Appreciation Day is Important
They’re endangered
Hunting has severely reduced the number of elephants left in the world. Thankfully, organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund and the International Elephant Foundation are working hard to protect African and Asian elephants.
They’re emotional
Pay attention to an elephant for a little while, and it’ll be easy to feel connected. Elephants are able to display fear, joy, excitement, and even grief. They’re also very social, meaning they’re more like humans than you may have realized.
Elephants respect their elders
Elephant “respect” comes through age and wisdom — not aggression. Many elephants follow around the oldest female because she knows where to find food and shelter.

NATIONAL ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY – September 22
(Last Updated On: November 8, 2022)
NATIONAL ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY | SEPTEMBER 22
Remember, September 22nd recognizes National Elephant Appreciation Day. The elephant probably won’t forget.
#ElephantAppreciationDay
People of all ages are fascinated by elephants. Discover some interesting facts about them to celebrate with us!
These captivating and social animals live between 60 to 70 years. Like humans, elephants develop remarkably close family bonds. Two species, the African Savannah and Asian elephant, exist. However, recently scientists suggested that the African Forest elephant is also a unique species and not a subspecies.
Each day, poachers kill approximately 100 elephants for their ivory, meat, bones, and skin.
These pachyderms are closely related to rhinoceroses and hippos. In fact, pachyderm describes thick-skinned animals with hooves or nails similar to hooves. While the African elephants outgrow the Asian, both hold the prize for the largest land mammal on earth. However, there are some differences between the species, though.
Differences Between African & Asian Elephants:
The African elephant grows larger ears.
In the Asian species, only the male grows tusks. However, in the African, both male and female elephants grow tusks.
One of the things that fascinate us about elephants is their trunk. It’s super sensitive. At the end, a small finger-like appendage grows. The appendage, also known as a lobe, gives elephants the ability to pick up small twigs, bits of grass and other items. On the Asian elephant, the lobe grows at the top tip of the trunk. However, the African elephant grows a lobe at the top and bottom, giving it extra pinching dexterity.
Both species live in herds. The herds are led primarily by a matriarch and comprised of sisters, daughters and their young. As the males grow, they move off on their own. Asian herds tend to be smaller than the African herds.
While both species are herbivores, their diets vary based on the available habitat.
Elephants are spirited and playful animals. Have you ever seen them frolic in the water? And they will defend their own with their mighty tusks. Whether foraging for food or digging a mud hole, their tusks are vital for survival. Since hunters value the ivory more than the life of the elephant, they endanger the continued existence of these majestic animals.
Do elephants never forget? Well, studies have determined that elephants have excellent memories. They remember vital locations over large areas of land. Elephants also show recognition of faces and other elephants even after a long time has passed. And while we may be forgetful from time to time, we don’t recommend forgetting this holiday!
HOW TO OBSERVE ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY
Don’t forget to celebrate the Elephant on September 22nd! Show your appreciation today by visiting the elephants at your local zoo. Get involved. Learn about conservation and eliminating poaching.
Read up about elephants. We suggest The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony or Love, Live and Elephants: An African Love Story by Daphne Sheldrick. You could also read Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss or any of the Babar stories by Jean de Brunhoff.
Documentaries bring the life of the elephant into our living rooms. Watch Elephant directed by Mark Linfield or When Elephants Were Young directed by Patricia Sims.
Use #ElephantAppreciationDay to post on social media.
Educators and families, visit the National Day Calendar Classroom for even more ways to Celebrate Every Day!
NATIONAL ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY HISTORY
National Elephant Appreciation Day originated in 1996 to raise awareness concerning the plight of elephants.
Elephant FAQ
Q. What’s another word for an elephant? A. The word “pachyderm” is often used in reference to an elephant. However, the elephant isn’t the only pachyderm in the world. The obsolete term was once a classification of animals which also included hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, pigs, and tapirs.
Q. Do elephants sleep standing up? A. Elephants do sleep standing up, though not all the time. Wild elephants will spend more time sleeping standing up than their captive relatives.

Every year on September 22, some countries celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day. For people, this is primarily an opportunity to express their gratitude to these majestic and amazing animals. It turns out that they have a lot of different talents.

This day was first announced in 1996 by WildHeart Productions. The main purpose of the holiday is to draw attention to these unique mammals. They are one of the noblest animals on earth. A species that is undeservedly endangered. Throughout history, the elephant has been a benefactor of mankind in many ways, cute and funny, gentle and friendly, plays a big role in the development and maintenance of the ecosystem and generally deserves to be appreciated and supported. This is an example of courage, strength, self-confidence, patience and perseverance.
Elephant Day is sponsored by WildHeart Productions, a Florida registered trademark owned by Mission Media, Inc., a digital and print graphics publisher. Mission Media is wholly owned by the Hepburn family of Sarasota, Florida.
What it’s for
Company founder Wayne Hepburn, who lived in the Chicago area in 1970, received a paperweight with an elephant-decorated base as a gift from his twelve-year-old daughter. Then he started buying figurines of these animals. K 19In 78, when he moved to Orange Park, Florida, he had about eighty elephants.
He became more interested in these animals, began to read and learn about them, look for them, ride them. The man supplemented his growing passion for elephants with a collection that in 1997 numbered nineteen hundred and nine cataloged items. Among them are figurines, toys, clothing, books (over 100), music boxes, jewelry, prints and original works of art, in short, every conceivable piece of art and artifacts related to elephants in one way or another. In addition, he collected examples of elephant images used in brand advertising, cartoons, and various print and other media.
He purchased the wildheart.com worldwide web domain in 1996 and hosted the one-of-a-kind ELEPHHANTERIA WildHeart site online as a place for elephant lovers to find everything that interests them and links to everything that isn’t there directly. on this page.
How Elephant Day is celebrated
Unlike most public holidays, this day does not have a central event. It can be done anywhere at the local level. “Elephant Day” and “Elephant Appreciation Day” are trademarks created in interstate commerce by Mission Media, Inc. Use is permitted for non-commercial purposes without obtaining a license. Any other use requires licensing by the trademark owner.
What elephants can do
They are incredibly smart and talented animals. For example, they can play football and darts. An annual festival in Surin Province, Thailand, is dedicated to elephants and everything they do. Highlights of the event include a football match and a dart throwing competition with an elephant.
They also help wash cars. Elephants at Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon will wash your car for as little as $20, but the terms say they don’t wash it! However, the elephants have fun by splashing water, and the money goes to the maintenance of the zoo.
A baby elephant in Phuket, Thailand enchants tourists with her dance skills and harmonica playing. And he’s not the only musician. An elephant named Five at the West Midlands Safari Park in England can play the harmonica, and an African elephant named Bubbles plays the harmonica at the Myrtle Beach Safari in South Carolina.
Kosik, an elephant from Yongin, Korea, made headlines a few years ago when zookeepers announced that the 16-year-old animal had learned to talk! Kosik was not specially taught to communicate, but the caretakers heard recognizable words coming from his enclosure.
The elephant could be heard saying yes, no, lie down, sit down (in Korean) and some other phrases used by its caretaker. It is doubtful that Kosik understands the meaning of words, but the reproduction of sounds in itself is a real achievement.
Elephants at the Island Safari Center in Koh Samui, Thailand, being taught how to play basketball. This activity is supposed to stimulate and maintain their health, and in addition, basketball games are very popular among tourists.
It takes only two or three months to teach an elephant how to handle a ball.
In Ponce DeLeon Springs, Florida, in 1959 or 1960, Queenie, a water-skiing elephant, lived.
A group of animals at the Maetaman Elephant Camp in Thailand learned to draw. Surprisingly, these are not abstract paintings, like most animals, but close to real images. Of course, they were taught this, but it doesn’t matter if they memorize the sequence of lines or draw what they see – this is an amazing achievement.

SIMFEROPOL, August 28 – RIA Novosti Crimea. In the Indian state of Kerala, a dog named Tommy died while protecting his owners from an angry elephant. People were not injured, Lenta.ru reports with reference to the Daily Star. The incident occurred at the end of August. A wild elephant tried to get into the courtyard of the site where a family of five lived, but got stuck in the fence. The animal went berserk, probably because of the pain of the barbed wire piercing its body, and broke the fence. The elephant was about to go to the people, as the dog blocked his way. Despite the impressive size of the enemy, Tommy rushed at the elephant and bit him on the leg, which further angered the wild animal. The elephant tried to strangle the dog with its trunk and pierced its body with sharp tusks. Even when wounded, Tommy scratched the elephant’s eye, and he was forced to retreat. The faithful dog was seriously injured, lived a couple more days after the fight and died on August 26, Dog Appreciation Day. Dog Appreciation Day or Dog Appreciation Day is celebrated on August 26. This date appeared in 2004 in the USA. Gradually, the holiday acquired an international character, although it does not have an official status. On this day, it is customary to thank your pets and remember that mankind knows many feats of dogs that saved human lives in difficult situations.

Deciding to send your child to a daycare facility can be an overwhelming decision for parents.
Since many parents work, daycare services meet an essential need within our communities.
There are advantages and disadvantages to daycare. Weighing the pros and cons of daycare can help you understand the best options for your family.
The pregnancy test is positive! Congratulations—you’re going to have a baby!
The first few weeks after finding out I was going to have a child, my mind was flooded with thoughts and questions about how to navigate the upcoming journey.
Should I breastfeed or formula feed? Should I co-sleep or sleep train? Which pediatrician should we use? Should I stay home with the baby or find a daycare?
These are all important questions to consider, but the decision for childcare was the most complex for me. I just needed to know what was best for my child, but getting that question answered was so challenging! It seemed impossible to consider leaving him for eight hours a day with just anyone.
I wanted the confidence that I was doing what was best for my child’s social and emotional development. I was curious about the best age to start daycare and how I could stay bonded with him after returning to work.
I wanted to know what the “right” decision was.
Turns out, I wasn’t the only one asking those questions.
Whether your child is an infant or a preschooler, deciding whether or not to leave her and go back to work is an emotional and complicated issue for many families.
When considering the pros and cons of daycare, there is a lot of research to wade through. In this article, we’ll examine the facts about childcare facilities. We’ll also discuss the building blocks that set your child up for success and things to consider when making your childcare decisions.
After reading this article, you will have the information necessary to feel confident about wherever you send your baby.
What Is a Daycare For?
A daycare provides daytime supervision and safe-keeping for individuals unable to care for themselves. Most childcare centers serve children with a minimum age of 6 weeks to a maximum age of 12 years.
There are many different types of child care centers that fit this description:
In-home daycare is supervised care in a residential home. The care provider may be a family member or friend. There are also state-licensed homes that allow for more children when appropriate supervision is provided.
Daycare facilities providecenter-based child care. Governmental guidelines usually regulate these facilities, including the requirement to be CPR certified.
Preschool programs areeducational programs for infants to kindergarten-aged children and are typically offered as an extension of an already-established elementary school. This would include religious and Montessori schools as well.
The term “daycare center” in this article references all of the above options.
Why Are Parents Sending Their Children To Daycare?
Parents typically choose a daycare center for their children based on two reasons: Accessibility and affordability.
Some families rely on two incomes. Others are single-parent households.
Some families are located away from their extended family and cannot rely on their help. Some communities lack reliable and safe nanny/sitter options.
Some parents struggle with being home all day and not working. Some children are social butterflies and thrive in bigger groups with more opportunities to interact with peers.
There are numerous reasons why parents choose to send their children to a daycare center.
Research shows that a child has both advantages and disadvantages when sent somewhere outside the home.
What Are the Advantages of Daycare Centers?
From an early age, children can socialize and learn from their peers, so sending a child to daycare can help them develop these essential skills. In a daycare setting, children are exposed to a variety of other kids from different backgrounds and with different personalities. This can help them learn how to interact with others, share toys and materials, and resolve conflicts.
In addition, daycare providers often plan activities and outings that provide learning opportunities. For example, trips to the park or local library can expose children to new people and ideas. As a result, daycare can play an important role in helping children learn and grow.
Time in daycare as a young child may also have long-term positive effects on a child development. A longitudinal study by the National Institute for Health found that adolescents who were in a “high-quality child care setting” in their childhood ranked measurably higher on academic and cognitive achievement scores.
The same study also found that children in high-quality to moderate-quality care were less likely to have “acting-out behaviors” when compared to their peers from lower-quality care settings.
High-quality care was measured by three criteria of the caregiver: their warmth, support, and cognitive stimulation of the children they were supervising.
Fewer “acting-out behaviors” and higher academic success are significant advantages to sending your son or daughter to a daycare center.
What Are the Disadvantages of Daycare Centers?
The same study from the National Institute of Health revealed a few disadvantages to daycare centers.
One main disadvantage was that adolescents who had been in care outside the home for the most time reported a higher likelihood of impulsivity and high risk-taking activity at age 15 than did teens who spent less time in child care.
One conclusion may be that the advantages of daycare lessen as time in care increases.
It’s also important to note that the cognitive achievement found in those who attended daycare is very slight, meaning it could also be contributed to other factors not measured through the study.
Daycare Pros and Cons
There are both pros and cons to placing your child in daycare. On the plus side, daycare can provide a safe and stimulating environment for a child to learn and grow. Toddlers in daycare have the opportunity to socialize with other children and adults, and they can learn important skills such as sharing, turn-taking, and communication. In addition, daycare can provide relief for parents struggling to manage work and child-rearing responsibilities.
On the other hand, daycare can be expensive and it may only be available in some areas. In addition, not all daycare facilities are equal in quality, so it’s essential to do your research before enrolling your child. Some parents also worry that their child will miss out on important bonding and family quality time if they are in daycare.
Before you decide if daycare is appropriate for your family, it may help to consider the pros and cons side by side:
Pros of daycare
Reliable and consistent care: Probably the main advantage most parents identify when they are considering daycare options is reliable and consistent care. The bigger the facility, the more workers and supervision are required. This equals more hands to care for the children and more eyes to supervise them.
Positive Support: “It takes a village” is a common term used to describe the challenge of raising children. Children who have consistent direction and guidance tend toward higher levels of resiliency and self-confidence as they age. The positive support of other caring, nurturing adults is not only empowering for young children, but it is also helpful to stressed, overworked parents. When you trust your caregivers, you can rest assured your child has their needs met when you are unable to do so. It takes a village!
Social Skills and Language Development: Being around other children and adults increases the number of words and phrases a young child hears in their day. This increases their social skills and language development.
Educational Activities: Most daycare centers offer educational activities. This creates a school-like environment that can ease the transition to elementary school when the time comes. These activities also help children with motor skills development and potty training.
Possible Cheaper option: Thanks to government funding and multiple families paying tuition, a daycare center is typically a cheaper option than having a nanny or babysitter.
Immunity Booster: Children exposed to more illnesses earlier in life tend to experience a higher level of immunity as they age. So although your young child may have a higher illness rate initially (see the cons of daycare), there are reasons to believe this will serve as an immunity boosterthroughout their adolescence and adulthood!
Cons of daycare
Higher Illness Rate: A common disadvantage for those who utilize daycare services is a higher illness rateamong children. With close quarters and naturally poor hygiene of young children, any contagious illness spreads rapidly. Sick children love to share their germs!
Strict Sick Policies: The ease at which illness spreads requires many daycare centers to abide by strict sick policies. These policies may require a certain amount of days kids have to stay away from the center after having symptoms or being sent home if symptoms appear at the center.
Unexpected Missed Work: When children have to stay home due to illness, this creates instability in the parent’s schedule and unexpected missed work. Many workers don’t have enough sick leave available, so they may have to choose a low-quality childcare option for their sick kids instead of staying home with them.
Expensive: Depending on where you live and the quality of daycare centers available to you, the right daycare for you may end up being quite expensive. Some parents express that their childcare situation costs them in tuition what they make going to work.
Daytime Schedule: Due to most childcare facilities providing a typical daytime schedule, parents and caregivers are reliant on the daycare hours offered. If they need to work overtime or a first/third shift, they are typically unable to utilize daycare services.
Learned Negative Behaviors: Although social skills development is seen as a pro to daycare services, the downside may also be learned negative behaviors. Many children in daycare settings often fight for attention, so they may pick up poor habits to gain staff’s attention which will undoubtedly leak over into life at home. They also may begin to mimic others’ words, both the good and the bad language! Sometimes, when verbal skills are low, aggressive behavior may be witnessed due to their urge to get their needs met.
Should You Send Your Child To Daycare?
No one will argue that a child being with their parents in their own home is the best, most secure option when it is available.
However, as the previous facts represent, children who are sent to daycare, whether in a small homelike setting or a larger school-like structure, can and do thrive!
It may seem hard to fathom being away from your child. Still, the families who choose daycare either out of necessity or for social benefit often report happy children and happy parents.
No one can say what option is best for your child. You are the expert on them!
Evaluate your circumstances, talk to trusted adults and professionals in your life, and look through your options. When you do make your final decision, trust your parenting gut! It is rarely wrong.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Two newborn girls died after they were found in the bathroom of a child care center Thursday evening on the Northwestern Medicine campus in Streeterville.
Police said, shortly before 7 p.m., officers responded to the Bernice Lavin Early Childhood Education Center in the 400 block of East Ontario Street, where someone had found two newborn girls in a bathroom.
According to unconfirmed police dispatch reports, a janitor was called to clean up some blood, when she found two the babies in a trash bag.

The twin girls were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A cause of death had not been determined as of Friday afternoon, as more study and investigation is needed, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
The center said in a statement that a staff member “experienced a medical emergency that resulted in the unanticipated delivery of newborn twin babies. ”
The child care center is a facility used solely by Northwestern Medicine employees, but Northwestern stressed that the woman who gave birth was not a Northwestern Medicine employee. She is employed by Bright Horizons daycare, which is providing emotional and mental health support to their employees.
A Northwestern spokesperson added in a separate statement that, “no daycare children were involved or impacted by the situation. The Chicago Fire and Police Departments were called. We are working with CPD regarding this incident and [are] unable to comment further at this time.”
A Northwestern spokesperson said he could not comment further, saying the hospital is working with CPD regarding the incident.
The childcare center said they’re offering emotional and mental health support to all employees and their families.

“We ask for support and respect for everyone involved at this time as we grieve together and work to support each other and any ensuing investigation,” a spokesperson said in an email.
Area 3 detectives were investigating. A Police Department spokesperson would not clarify if the probe is a criminal investigation, and would only confirm they are investigating a death.
No one was in custody Friday.

The rating evaluated kindergartens according to three criteria: “Conditions created for the child” (safety, equipment of premises and playgrounds, availability of toys, etc.), “Teachers working with children” (assesses the qualifications of teachers) and “Additional services” .
All kindergartens were rated “good” and “satisfactory” according to the criterion “Conditions created for the child in kindergarten”.
Moscow, Tambov, Samara and Ulyanovsk regions received the highest results among other regions – from 75% to 100% of kindergartens from these regions were rated “good”.
The vast majority of kindergartens according to the criterion “Teachers working with children in kindergarten” correspond to the assessment “satisfactory”. Only one kindergarten from the Samara region, which is the leader in the overall rating, corresponds to the “good” rating. The lowest results were shown by kindergartens in the Jewish Autonomous Region, 55% of which were rated “not satisfactory”.
A compensating type kindergarten “Mayachok” Togliatti topped the published rating of municipal kindergartens in Russia-2013.
“Mayachok” outperformed other kindergartens in the first two indicators, yielding in the third. However, his composite index was 55.95%, which allowed him to take the first line. Family Reviews
My daughter loves arriving everyday, always excited to see her teachers and friends. This facility goes way beyond a daycare. I could have never asked for sweeter, more caring people to help me raise my daughter, and I’m very blessed to have them as part of our family!
Jennifer Kennedy
My daughter has been at this center since she was nine months old. Our family absolutely loves this center. The staff is exceptional. I never have any worries about my daughter while she is there. This is a great piece of mind to have while working. I highly recommend this center!!!
Elizabeth Mills
The staff feel like our extended family and you can tell how much they really care about the kids. The level of care he receives has more than exceeded our idea of what daycare would be when we first started our search! We recommend The Sunshine House, they are simply the best around! :)
Ashley Roberts
The director is amazing, and the teachers go out of their way to make my kids have a great day, and come home having learned something! We are very picky about where and who we leave our children with. We feel 100% comfortable leaving them with the team at The Sunshine House.
T Rowe Piper
My oldest started here almost three years ago. She absolutely loves it and I do too. I now have my 8 month old baby here as well. Every single one of the teachers have been amazing and so have the directors.

As a retired teacher of 45 years, I know an excellent educational program when I see one. This program is one of the best I have seen. Our granddaughter has been attending the Sunshine House for the last 18 months. Our granddaughter has been teaching us hand movements with music and new songs that she sings to us. Our granddaughter loves attending school with all the new ideas and concepts that are being addressed with each and every child. Awesome job!!

Meet Our Director, Becca Glover
Hello! My name is Becca Glover, and I am the Center Director at The Sunshine House Early Learning Academy on Lawndale Drive, near The Fresh Market in Greensboro.
I have an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education and have worked in the early education field for almost 30 years. I have worked as Assistant Teacher, Lead Teacher, Assistant Director and Director in Virginia, Kentucky and Illinois, and have been in North Carolina for more than 20 years.
I enjoy the fast pace of working with all different age groups of children, staff and families. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my two boys, who are very involved in school sports and activities, as well as spending time at the beach and the mountains.
Meet Our Assistant Director, Jane Seawell
Hello! My name is Jane Seawell, and I have 10 years of childcare experience ranging from the classroom to afterschool programs, and even as a personal nanny. I graduated from UNCG in 2020 with a Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Human Development and a minor in ASL. I have worked with children of all ages including newborns up to 16 years old.
I recently got engaged this past August and am looking forward to wedding planning! For now my fiancé and I are enjoying our lives together with our two cats and an abundance of plants!
I love working with children and have always had teaching and childcare in mind for my career. I feel lucky that I have been able to make that happen. Moving into this position will give me a new experience, and there are so many things to learn! I strive to maintain the standards that The Sunshine House has put forth while helping families, children, and teachers feel welcome, comfortable and happy.

The cost of child care
RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina state lawmakers could address the increasing costs of child care this legislative session. It comes as some families are seeing costs outgrow their income.
Families like that of Sheranae Stoddard are feeling the impact.
What You Need To Know
North Carolina lawmakers could address the cost of child care this legislative session
Sheranae Stoddard is a stay-at-home mother to her five children
The cost of child care has ballooned to now more than what her salary brought in for their family
According to N.C. Child, 44% of North Carolina families are in a “child care desert”
Stoddard is a stay-at-home mother of five.
When her eldest children were young, she tried to work.
“I worked at a day care with my two oldest when I first graduated. My degrees [are] in psychology and minored in child development. So I was able to get a job at a day care pretty much right away, and I think the cost, this is at that time, which was 14 years ago about, it was like $900 for an infant to be, you know, to be there all day,” Stoddard said.
She said it just wasn’t financially doable for her situation.
Instead of working full time like her husband, Stoddard looked for part-time jobs.
“I took a job at the YMCA because I could bring my kids to work with me, and just other little things like little part-time jobs, where it coincided with his schedule. Because, you know, we just didn’t have enough money to put all three young kids in day care.”
When they had their fourth child, they decided it wasn’t worth it anymore.
“I think it is frustrating when you actually add up,” Stoddard said. “[It’s] $500 per kid, and that’s $1,000, you know? That’s $1,000 because you have two of them, and you’re only bringing in ‘X’ amount of dollars. You’re leaving your house for eight, nine, potentially 10 hours a day, and you’re only bringing home $300 or $400.”
It’s a problem that other families across North Carolina are facing, and the COVID pandemic only exasperated the need for more care at a lower cost.
According to NC Child, 44% of North Carolina families live in a child care desert.
This means a family might be in a situation where there are five children in need of care but only one spot is available. The burden of care for the other four children could then fall entirely on the mother.
Not every family can afford to have one parent stay at home and live off of one salary. It can leave parents in a precarious situation.
“Women have the babies — usually. I mean, when I couldn’t ask my husband to leave work or to do something when he’s the major breadwinner… And that’s part of the reason why I chose to stay home. My job, whatever job I got straight out of school and even into now, wasn’t going to make as much as he was making,” Stoddard said.
Republicans and Democrats in the state legislature say they’re hard at work on the issue.
Lawmakers have introduced many bills to address different areas of early childhood education and assisting high costs.
Stoddard says that as talks continue at the state’s capitol, she hopes there’s focus on finding a good balance between quality care and cost.
