  • At KinderCare Learning Centers, your child’s safety is one of our
    top priorities. Not only are all of our outside perimeter doors
    locked to ensure security, but all of our playgrounds are fenced
    with locked gates as well. In addition the front door of the
    building has a coded entry where only authorized family members
    will have a code to enter. A door bell is available for visitors
    who will be greeted by a center staff member. At Lancaster
    KinderCare we even have a Health and Safety Coordinator on site. Ms
    Alyssa’s duties as Health and Safety Coordinator include conducting
    monthly fire drills and disaster drills, ensuring that all staff
    are First Aid and CPR certified, and maintaining high cleanliness
    and safety standards.

Qualifications:

Skills, Education, and Experience

  • At least two years of early childhood education experience required, with an understanding of developmentally appropriate practices and the ability to ensure its use in the classroom
  • A love for children and a strong desire to make a difference every day
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, verbal, listening, and communication skills required
  • CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain
  • Must meet state specific guidelines for the role
  • Must be physically able to use a computer with basic proficiency, lift a minimum of 40 pounds, and work indoors or outdoors. Must be able to assume postures in low levels to allow physical and visual contact with children, see and hear well enough to keep children safe, and engage in physical activity.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.

Puppy stages: A week-by-week guide to caring for a newborn puppy

There are few things more magical than watching a puppy grow.

If you’re really in on all the action from day one, you’ll watch in awe as they open their eyes, carefully (and sometimes not so carefully) explore the environment around them with their nose and gradually grow into those oversized paws.

To help you know what to expect during the most adorable weeks of a puppy’s life, we asked Dr. Carlo Siracusa, veterinarian and associate professor of Clinical Behavior Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, to share key happenings and care information through the early stages, from day one to 48 weeks.

Stage one: Newborn to 3 weeks old — silent senses

You may think interacting with a puppy early on only serves you — by optimizing the cuteness on all your social media channels — but, according to Siracusa, there are benefits for the puppy, too. During the first three weeks of life, a puppy is almost devoid of senses. Its eyes, ears and nose won’t work properly until week three, and they won’t respond to stimuli from humans until then, either. Puppies sleep most of the time, which is vital for a newborn’s development. Nevertheless, tactile stimulation can still foster the puppy’s development.

“Tactile stimulation is something that should happen,” Siracusa says, adding that there should always be respect for the puppies’ mother. “There are actually studies that show that a few minutes of stimulation and handling the puppies favors development. It makes the puppy more resistant to stress. Whether this is the fact that the puppies are touched, or another hypothesis is that touching puppies stimulates the mom’s licking of them. Whatever it is, handling puppies is important.”

Training during this period

You won’t actually be training this adorable ball of fluff for many, many weeks, but there are ways you can set puppies up for success, specifically by exposing them to background sounds that are typical of their environment.

“They should gradually be exposed to the stimuli that will be part of their life,” says Siracusa. “For example, we see that if a dog is born in a very quiet environment, like the countryside or the suburbs, and then moves to the city [later], then there are problems adapting to the environment.”

He recommends playing smart with your puppy during this time.

“If I play with my hands and the puppy goes bananas, I know that at some point the puppy is going to bite me,” Siracusa says. “The little teeth of a puppy are really sharp; they are painful! So at that point, punishing the puppy might promote some anxiety and stress for the puppy. So the best way to set the puppy up for success is, if you know the puppy is going to bite you, play with something else, not with your hand.”

If the first three weeks of life were the sleepyhead phase, this is the phase of awakenings! By the fourth week, the pup should be able to walk. There are important goings-ons between mother, puppy and siblings — strengthening the case for puppies staying with their mothers as long as possible early on. Mom begins weaning the pups and starts teaching discipline. The pup will socialize with its siblings and learn bite inhibition through puppy play-biting — skills that will come in handy later as they age.

“The senses, the sight, the smell and the hearing — they start to be more mature, so the dog can reach for stimuli from the environment,” says Siracusa. “This is when the socialization starts. Their fear threshold is still very high. Like children, they are not afraid of anything. They see something and immediately they throw themselves into it, whether it’s a big dog or another animal. Very young puppies are the same, because Mother Nature keeps this threshold for fear high, so the puppy can be exposed to the stimuli that would be part of the normal environment. Still, maternal care is the most relevant component here.”

Don’t forget to start your puppy’s vaccinations during this time. Consult with your vet to determine the right schedule for your pooch.

Training during this period

To help the puppy grow into a well-adjusted dog, Siracusa says it’s important to start to expose him or her to stimulation, under the careful supervision of mom.

“Hold it, handling it briefly, and start to have them used to being touched and our smells,” he says. “Around 8 weeks, they start to be more playful, so [engage in] gentle play with them.”

Careful interaction is key here.

“We want to keep our handling and interaction below the threshold for fear,” Siracusa says. “If there’s something that we do that the puppy thinks is scary, this is not a good form of socializing a puppy. It means exposing a puppy gradually to an environment that he has to get used to but always keeping the puppy below threshold. This is crucial in period three, because after eight weeks is when the threshold for fear starts to decrease. Puppies start to be more and more wary of stuff.”

Socializing with other dogs will usually start within the same litter, he notes, and once a puppy leaves its siblings — usually occurring between this stage and the next — socialization with other puppies can begin.

“It should be done, however, in a safe environment where puppies are in good health conditions,” Siracusa says. “Dog parks should be avoided, but reputable puppy classes in a clean environment can be a great opportunity for socialization.”

Stage three: 8 to 12 weeks old — Fear of the new

That adorable ball of fluff is becoming more independent and starting to really get the hang of physical coordination. They will continue to learn about everything around them, like what’s safe and unsafe.

“The puppy soaks up everything, like a sponge,” says Siracusa.

He recommends that the puppy’s adoption take place between state two and this stage, around 8 weeks old.

“Because [8 to 12 weeks old] is when the fear response starts to become more pronounced,” he says. “So if we wait too long, then it’s going to be more difficult to acclimate the puppy to our environment.”

The owner or care provider should try to make the puppy’s experiences during this period as positive and comforting as possible, because they can be hypersensitive to upsetting incidents.

Training during this period

From about 7 to 8 weeks of age, owners can start promoting some independence in their puppies.

“At the beginning, it can be as simple as having the dog chewing on a treat or toy while on a mat away from the owner, but in the same room,” Siracusa says. “This time of independence can then progressively be increased. But it is important to keep in mind that puppies need plenty of social interactions and should not be left alone for many hours.”

If a dog owner plans to get a puppy and then go to work for eight to 10 hours a day, “then he or she should reconsider the opportunity to acquire a dog,” Siracusa says.

Housebreaking can begin at 8 weeks old, and training by 9 weeks old. Negative experiences can have an impact on the pup, so take care, just like their mother would.

“Many people think that having guests come in and having everybody handling the puppy and picking up the puppy, we make the puppy good around people, [but] it’s not true,” Siracusa says. “If someone handles the puppy and he gets scared, for example, because we pick him up too quickly and he loses contact with the floor — or inadvertently while handling him, a young child causes some pain — these are not positive experiences. The same way positive experiences leave a long-term mark, negative experiences do. Negative experiences might even leave a more profound impression. So this is very, very important [to know] in stage three.”

Don’t encourage forms of play that are inappropriate, Siracusa says.

“The puppy has to learn that there is a way of playing with humans that does not imply biting their hands,” he says. “Instead of roughhousing with a puppy with your hands, use toys.”

Stage four: 12 to 24 weeks old — Chewing everything in sight

With the puppy’s first permanent teeth making their appearance now, chew toys are a must-have.

“Chewing is an exploratory behavior, so they chew a lot,” says Siracusa. “They start to be extremely proactive. Now they are more likely to leave the mother’s side and just go around and explore.”

He recommends an exercise pen or limited area where you can supervise the goings on.

“Provide the puppy with enough stimulation, enough toys and [human] contact and interaction,” he says. “Fill toys with some food inside to stimulate this chewing.”

This is also when you can enroll your puppy in its first training class, like a puppy socialization class.

“This is a good time to have exposure to people again in a controlled way,” he says. “Observe your puppy a lot. Start to pick up his body language. Start to understand when he’s feeling uncomfortable in a situation.”

Training during this period

This is the age to start practicing some easy training, Siracusa says.

“Start to work, for example, on calling the puppy with a happy voice,” he says. “Puppies and dogs, in general, are much more likely to listen to us if we use a happy tone of voice. There are studies that show this. They want to go for positive stimuli where they expect the outcome is going to be good. Work on gentle recalling and then giving a treat.”

This is also a very important time for house-training. Take them out when you anticipate that they are going to go potty, usually every two to three hours, definitely after meals and when they’re excited or when they wake up.

Crate training can also start during this stage and can help with potty training and separation anxiety.

“If he pees or poops in the crate, just clean it,” Siracusa says, adding that this is the time puppies should get used to staying in the crate. “Getting upset doesn’t fix anything.”

He suggests making the crate a fun place in the beginning to enforce the positive rather than negative.

“The dog should not be locked in the crate and left alone, because the dog will not associate the crate with a fun place,” Siracusa says. “He will associate the crate with a prison. We want to put in interesting toys, water — never deprive dogs of water, especially puppies. The crate should be a nice environment, not a timeout.”

Stage five: 24 to 48 weeks old — Teenage doghood

At this age, your pup is old enough to have regular walks outside, and the potty training may be complete. The more the dog matures, the more the training can become intensive, because his or her attention span has increased.

Exploratory behavior is important right now and all a part of the learning process.

“Allow the dog to sniff the environment when you bring the dog out for walks,” Siracusa says. “It’s OK for your dog to explore the environment, starting to recognize the smells, because dogs communicate through smells. He will learn how many dogs there are in the area. Allowing the dog to explore the environment at this age is very important.”

Typically, spaying or neutering of your puppy is done at 6 months old. Talk with your vet about timing.

Training during this period

“At this point I think you can move to more advanced training,” Siracusa says. “We might try to start exposing the dog to more professional training, for example, if we want him to be a working dog or want him to be an agility dog.”

It’s important to help your puppy acclimate to receiving regular veterinary care.

“When the dog goes to the vet for its first vaccines, then it should be exposed to positive things,” he says. “We use baby food a lot with our patients. While they are eating some baby food, that is when the veterinarian is doing the vaccines. This type of gradual exposure should continue throughout the other stages.”

Try getting the dog used to the waiting room by doing what Siracusa calls “happy visits.”

“Sitting in the waiting room, giving some treats to the dog and go back home,” he says. “We need to get the dog used to it now, when it’s easy to handle. Otherwise, when its big, then it might actually be trouble.”

With the puppy’s first permanent teeth making their appearance now, chew toys are a must-have.

Chewing is an exploratory behaviour, so puppies naturally chew a lot. They start to become extremely proactive in this stage. Now is when they are more likely to leave their mother’s side and just go around and explore.

The expert recommends an exercise pen or limited area where you can supervise what the puppy is getting up to. Be sure to provide them with enough stimulation, enough toys, human contact and interaction. Fill toys with some food to stimulate this chewing behaviour.

This is also when you can enrol your puppy in its first training class, like a puppy socialisation class. It’s a good time to have exposure to people again in a controlled way, where you can observe your puppy a lot, start to pick up their body language and understand when they’re feeling uncomfortable in a situation.

Training during this period

This is the age to start practising some easy training.

The expert says you can start to work, for example, on calling the puppy with a happy voice. Puppies and dogs, in general, are much more likely to listen to us if we use a happy tone of voice, and there are studies that back this up. They want to go for positive stimuli where they expect the outcome is going to be good. Work on gentle recalling and then giving the puppy a treat.

This is also a very important time for house-training, especially for toilet training a puppy. Take them out when you anticipate that they are going to do their business, usually every 2 to 3 hours, but definitely after meals, when they’re excited or when they wake up.

You can also start a puppy crate-training schedule during this stage, which can help with toilet training and separation anxiety.

If they pee or poop in the crate, just clean it up; getting upset about it doesn’t fix anything. This is the time puppies should get used to staying in the crate.

It’s a good idea to make the crate a fun place in the beginning to enforce the positive rather than the negative.

The dog should not be locked in the crate and left alone, because they will not associate the crate with a fun place if you do that. Instead, it will be more like a prison to them. You should put in interesting toys and water—never deprive dogs of water, especially puppies. The crate should be a nice environment, not a timeout.

Stage 5: 24 to 48 weeks old—teenage doghood

At this age, your pup is old enough to have regular walks outside, and the toilet training may be complete. The more the dog matures, the more the training can be intensified, because their attention span will have increased.

Exploratory behaviour is important right now and a part of the learning process. Allow the dog to sniff the environment when you take it out for walks. It’s OK for your dog to explore the environment and start to recognise the smells, because dogs communicate through scent. By letting them sniff, they will learn how many dogs there are in the area. Allowing your dog to explore the environment at this age is very important.

Typically, spaying or neutering of your puppy is done at 6 months old. Talk with your vet about timing.

Training during this period

At this point, you can move on to more advanced training. Perhaps try to start exposing the dog to more professional training, for example, if you want them to be a working dog or an agility dog.

It’s also important to help your puppy acclimate to receiving regular veterinary care. When the dog goes to the vet for its first vaccines, it should be exposed to positive things. Some vets use baby food a lot with their patients. While they are focused on eating the food, the veterinarian administers the vaccines. This type of gradual exposure should continue throughout the other stages, too.

Also try getting the dog used to the waiting room by doing what the expert calls “happy visits”. Here, you sit in the waiting room, give the dog some treats, and then go home again. You need to get the dog used to the vet at this stage, when it’s still easy to handle. Otherwise, when it gets big, vet visits might cause trouble.

1-2 weeks: from cell to fetus

It all starts with the fertilization of the mother’s egg in the fallopian tube, and so the puppy begins his great journey. Together with their future brothers and sisters, the fetus goes to the mother’s uterus. Fertilized eggs are distributed throughout the uterus and tightly pressed against its walls. Parent-teacher nights are coming up soon, and we recommend that parents start thinking about any specific questions they’d like to ask their child’s teacher. Here are some tips to help you get started!

A lot of guides online will encourage questions like, “What is your teaching style?” However, we’d recommend focusing on more specific questions that relate to your individual student. If you’re attending a parent-teacher night, the teacher will most likely give a short introduction and provide an overview of the daily classroom routine. As a result, general questions like “What is the daily schedule for students?” may be a bit redundant. Instead, we recommend asking questions that will help you gain insight into your child’s performance and behavior during class time.

1. “What are my child’s biggest challenges?” This is a good question to start with as it answers the main concern most parents want to know! Academic obstacles throughout the school year can cause quite the headache, and your child’s teacher will have the most direct experience working with them. We’ve seen some guides recommend questions like “What are my child’s strengths?” – but in all honesty, most parents already know the answer to this question! We recommend using parent-teacher night as an opportunity to ask the tough questions, as these will provide you with more insight into your child’s overall classroom experience.

2. “How can we make homework less stressful?” For most parents, homework is the main source of after-school stress. After all, your child’s homework assignments are the most direct connection you have to their classroom experience! Parents are sure to have their own insights that can be very valuable to bring up with their child’s teacher – ranging from organization concerns to time management. This is also a good opportunity to discuss any specific assignments or projects that were particularly overwhelming for your child. 3. “What can I do at home to help my child meet classroom behavior expectations?” One thing most parents don’t get to see is how their child acts during class time. “How was your day?” you ask. “Fine” or “good” or simply a blank stare is your kid’s response. Sound familiar? Then you’re probably champing at the bit for a parent-teacher conference—the quarterly information sharing ritual that gives parents a sense of what’s been going on…the good, the bad and the ugly. Alas, these tệte-à-tệtes are typically quite brief, so it’s wise to show up prepared. We spoke to Judy Stern, a school principal in Brooklyn with 15 years of teaching experience under her belt, to get her take on the most productive questions to ask.

1. In what moments have you seen my child thriving? Struggling?

This one is pretty straightforward, but it is helpful to know the areas in which your child naturally excels, as well as those that present a challenge. The beauty of this question is that it allows the teacher to touch on a wide range of strengths and weaknesses, from academic performance to classroom behavior. Indeed, Stern says that in her experience “slightly broader questions like this one tend to require a more thoughtful response from teachers.

2. Does my child seem happy playing with his/her peers?

A large part of the learning that takes place in elementary school is the social-emotional kind—and you most likely don’t get to see your kid’s social skills in action nearly as often as their teacher does. As such, “you’ll be in a much better position to promote your child’s healthy social-emotional growth at home if you mine the teacher for insight,” says Stern.

3. Does my child ask questions when they do not understand?

Per Stern, “young children sometimes struggle academically simply because they feel too shy or embarrassed to ask for help or even just basic clarification before they begin their work.” The kids who ask for extra guidance when they need it, however, are far less likely to fall behind. Find out how comfortable your kid feels asking questions, so you can help them practice this useful classroom skill if necessary.

4. How can I best support my child at home?

“When teachers and parents are working in tandem, everyone wins,” says Stern. That said, it’s not always easy for parents to determine how best to help, which is why it’s important to come right out and ask. (Hint: The answer will depend on your kid’s specific needs, and could range from anything from “set up a nightly reading routine” to “consider an outside tutor.”

5. How can I best support you?

Teachers also need as much support as they can get in order to keep the whole classroom operation running smoothly, but you won’t know exactly what they need (supplies, volunteer time, etc.) unless you ask. For this reason, Stern recommends ending the conference with this question. After all, both teachers and students are more likely to succeed when parents get involved—even if it just means sending in an extra roll of paper towels.

There will definitely be information about what kind of education the teacher has, what his teaching experience is and how he improved his qualifications. All this is important.

4. At the first meeting, exchange phone numbers with the teacher and immediately agree on a convenient time to call. Some teachers work double shifts or stay with the children on aftercare. Do you think that 6-7 pm is the best time to disturb the teacher? Or maybe he just finished his work day?

5. Suppose a child has a disease. Should I report this to the teacher? “My opinion is yes. With Family Connection, you can make payments with a credit card, debit card, or Automatic Clearing House (ACH). Some of our centers bill weekly, and others bill monthly.

  • For those that bill monthly, tuition invoices are generated on the 25th of the current month for the upcoming month’s enrollment. Your payment is due on the 2nd of the month.
  • For centers that bill weekly, invoices are generated on Friday morning for your child’s pre-planned care the upcoming week. Payment is due before the center closes that same day (Friday), with a grace period through Tuesday of the following week.

Late payments will incur a fee.

Fees

Notice a fee on your tuition invoice? There are a few reasons why this might be showing up:

 

  • Late Pickups: Life gets in the way sometimes! We get it. But if your child is in the center past closing time, your center might charge a late pickup fee.*
  • Drop-In Fees: If your child joins us for more days than they’re signed up for, you might be charged a drop-in fee for each day above their contracted schedule. *
  • Summer Fees: During the summer, we charge a one-time fee to help us organize extra-special enrichment activities for your child like field trips and splash days.* This fee also covers an adorable branded summer T-shirt and water bottle for your child—don’t be surprised if they become household favorites!
  • Overdue or Insufficient Payments: It happens to the best of us—we miss a payment deadline or overdraw on our account. If you have an overdue payment, you’ll be charged a late fee, and have 14 days to make your payment.* If you carry an overdue balance for more than 14 days, your account could be closed. We never want to get to that point, but also don’t want our families to incur overburdensome costs. If your payment is returned by the bank, you will be charged a fee for insufficient funds.*

Autopay is the best way to make sure you never miss an invoice or a payment deadline.

  • How much will you be charged? Any time there’s an invoice pending, we’ll charge you the total outstanding balance on your account. Your invoice amounts will vary based on tuition, fees, and other charges that you might incur.
  • When will you be charged? Your account may be charged according to your center’s billing schedule. Contact your center director to understand the billing schedule at your center location.
  • When is tuition due? Your payment for child care is due before your child joins us for the upcoming week or month (depending on your center’s billing schedule).

When (and Why) We Bill for Unused Days

Unplanned absences and center closure days are still included in your tuition. Here’s a helpful way to think about it: You pay for your child’s reserved space in our program, not for their attendance.

  • Unplanned Absences. We staff and stock all your child’s classroom based on their planned care schedule. That means we don’t offer a credit for your child’s absences for sick days, nationally observed holidays, or emergency closures at your center.
  • Professional Development Days. Every year, we hold two Professional Development Days (PDD) for our staff. PDD is a very special, enriching time when our teachers plan, learn, and train to be their best for your child. On these days, our center is closed but tuition will still be charged.

Digital citizenship: teens being responsible online

What is digital citizenship?

Digital citizenship is when a person uses the internet in a legal, safe, ethical and responsible way.

Digital citizenship means:

  • behaving lawfully – for example, it’s a crime to hack, steal, illegally download or cause damage to other people’s work, identity or property online
  • protecting your privacy and managing your reputation
  • thinking about how your online activities affect yourself, other people you know, and the wider online community.

Responsible digital citizenship is different from the skills you need to make informed decisions about the content you use and trust. These skills are part of media or digital literacy.

What children and teenagers get out of being digital citizens

When they’re online, children and teenagers are mostly social, engaging with content and people.

For example, games like Minecraft allow children to work with others to build new worlds. And platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Messenger, Twitch and Snapchat help teenagers maintain friendships, share experiences and support peers. This culture of communicating and sharing helps children and teenagers feel connected to a larger global community.

As digital citizens, teenagers express themselves by sharing and posting comments, images and videos. They can explore who they are and take action on issues they care about. They might do this by engaging in social causes like climate change, joining or creating online communities, or creating content like videos or memes.

Sometimes the anonymity of the internet can be a bonus – for example, if teenagers want to explore aspects of their identity or get help with issues they’re worried or embarrassed about.

Finally, the internet gives teenagers access to news and information, and many turn to the internet first to understand themselves and the world.

Children and teenagers connect socially both online and offline, but they might do things online that challenge your ideas about what’s normal or OK. This is often about discovery and self-expression, which are important for your child’s development.

Key messages for safe and responsible digital citizenship

These key messages can encourage your child to be safe and responsible online, while still having fun:

  • Be respectful – and expect respect.
  • Protect your reputation.
  • Protect your privacy.
  • Think critically.

Be respectful – and expect respect

Respect for yourself and other people is important in all relationships, and it’s no different when you’re online.

You can encourage your child to treat online friends with as much respect as face-to-face friends. Part of this is not creating or forwarding nasty or humiliating emails, images or text messages about someone else. It’s also refusing to take part in mean or negative online discussions about other people.

You can encourage your child to tell you or another trusted adult if they see someone being bullied or attacked online. Young people often try to sort things out for themselves, but it’s good to encourage your child to talk with you if they’re worried about something online. It might help your child to know that things are easier to sort out when other people help.

If your child gets any nasty or bullying comments, they should block or unfriend people who don’t treat them with respect.

It’s often hard to ‘read’ emotion in posts and emails, and jokes can easily be misinterpreted. You can encourage your child to ‘stop, think, review’ before they send a message or post an online comment. Using emojis or hashtags can help, but these might have more than one meaning.

Protect your reputation

Make sure your child understands the consequences of posting photos and videos and uploading personal content,. Once this content is online, it’s very hard to get rid of and can become part of your child’s permanent online reputation. Also, photos and other content can be altered or shared without your child’s permission.

You can encourage your child to think about the online content or behaviour their future self might be comfortable with. For example, you could say, ‘Some videos or posts might seem OK to you now, but you might feel differently about them in the future and not want people to see them’.

Depending on your child’s age, you could agree that they show you posts, images and other content before they upload them.

Protect your privacy

There are several ways your child can protect their privacy:

  • Share only as much personal information as necessary. For example, it’s not compulsory to enter your year of birth, mobile number, email address or city on all online forms.
  • Keep privacy settings up to date on social media sites, so your child’s profile isn’t publicly available.
  • Keep passwords private.
  • Check the location settings and services on smartphones, tablets and apps. Turn off the location services your child doesn’t need.
  • Read the terms and conditions of apps to understand what data the apps collect about your child and how the apps distribute that data.
  • Don’t use public wi-fi for posting on social media or messaging, because the connection is public and can be hacked.

Think critically

There are many dodgy people, places and offers online.

Not everyone online is who they say they are. It’s important for your child to be careful about what they share with people they don’t know.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably isn’t true. You and your child can find out how to recognise, avoid and report scams on Scamwatch, a website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). You can also use the ABC’s Fact Check to check the accuracy of claims by politicians, public figures, advocacy groups and institutions.

If your child isn’t sure about a site’s credibility, they can ask themselves some critical questions. For example, ‘Whose interest does this site serve?’ or ‘How accurate and reliable is what I’m reading?’ The answers can help your child work out which sites and offers are dodgy and which have accurate news and content.

Your child should also be careful about clicking pop-ups on websites. Some pop-ups that seem safe can lead to porn sites or are scams that collect personal or financial information.

Having regular, relaxed and respectful conversations with your child is the best way to help your child make good decisions about online behaviour. You could talk about using social media responsibly, cyberbullying, sexting and avoiding online pornography.

As more and more students interact digitally–with content, one another, and various communities–the concept of digital citizenship becomes increasingly important.

Which begs the question: what is digital citizenship?

Well, first citizenship, which is formally defined as “the quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community. ” This makes citizenship far more complex than a simple legal matter, but rather one that consists of self-knowledge, interaction, and intimate knowledge of a place, its people, and its cultural history.

So digital citizenship is nearly the same thing–“the quality of a response to membership in a digital community” would be a good first crack at the definition.

Revising that might more clearly articulate the differences between physical and digital communities, so a decent definition of digital citizenship then might be “Self-monitored participation that reflects conscious interdependence with all (visible and less visible) community members”

But that leaves out the idea of content itself, which leads us to a pretty good definition for educators: “The quality of habits, actions, and consumption patterns that impact the ecology of digital content and communities.”

Still too wordy? Maybe a shorter version for students–with some moral imperatives and implied advice–could be: “the self-monitored habits that sustain and improve the digital communities you enjoy or depend on.

Testing digital literacy for everyone. Results of the first month of operation of the Digital Citizen portal – NAFI

  • More than 1,000 people have taken free professional digital literacy testing since the launch of the Digital Citizen platform.

  • The share of people with a high level of digital literacy among those who passed the test is 85%, among Russians in general – 27%.

  • Russians are interested in improving digital competencies: 24% of working Russians are afraid of losing their jobs if they do not receive training in the digital sphere.

  • NAFI is the operator of the Digital Citizen platform. NAFI has been conducting research on the level of digital literacy of Russians since 2017.

During the month more than 1000 people passed free testing on the Digital Citizen platform (it-gramota.ru) to determine their level of digital literacy*. Interest in testing was mainly shown by users who already have good knowledge and skills in the digital environment. The share of people with a high level of digital literacy among those who passed the test is 85%, among Russians in general – 27%**. The challenge for the coming months is to bring testing to the attention of users and employees of organizations that may be lagging behind in digital knowledge and skills.

Timur Aimaletdinov , Deputy General Director of the NAFI Analytical Center:

“The NAFI Analytical Center acts as the operator of the Digital Citizen platform. The platform has been operating for almost a month, its goal is to prepare a person for life and work in the digital economy. The system generates a unique set of questions for each user based on their current level of digital literacy. We are constantly improving our testing tool and welcome feedback from users.”

Most (85%) of the users who passed the Digital Citizen test have a high level of digital literacy, 15% received average scores. On average in Russia, according to the results of the NAFI study, the share of people with a high level of digital literacy at the beginning of 2020 was 27%. The digital literacy index of those who were tested on the Digital Citizen – 76 p.p. out of 100 possible. On average in Russia, according to the results of representative testing, the value of the Digital Literacy Index is 58 p.p.

The difference is explained by the fact that the interest in testing their level of digital literacy on the Digital Citizen was shown primarily by users who are already well versed in the digital. However, their knowledge in some areas needs to be improved.

Users received relatively low scores on questions related to the assessment of the reliability of information in the network and the protection of personal data . Worst awareness on topics related to customization software , as well as latest technological developments .

Men scored higher on digital literacy tests than women (92% versus 81%).

Russians understand the importance of competencies in the digital sphere. The majority (65%) believe that in the organization where they work, staff may be reduced due to process automation and the introduction of new technologies. One in four employees (24%) believe that they themselves may lose their job if they do not receive training in the digital sphere***. At the same time, additional training in the field of digital literacy is more often carried out by those who already have it at a fairly high level.

Digital literacy testing for everyone

Anyone can assess their level of digital literacy and receive individual recommendations for improving it. To do this, you need to register on the portal it-gramota.ru and pass the test – it will take from 30 to 45 minutes. As a result, the user will receive not only a personal strategy for improving their competencies, but also links to available training materials.

All test results, personal training recommendations and links to training courses will be stored in the Personal Account. It will also be possible to obtain a certificate confirming the current level of digital literacy (beginner, basic or advanced).

Comprehensive testing of digital literacy for employees of government agencies and corporations

The test will help the heads of executive authorities assess the readiness of Russian regions for digital transformation, track the achievement of digital competencies of the population of the region as a whole, as well as individual subgroups in order to build the most effective trajectory for their learning.

Testing will help managers and HR departments assess the current level of digital literacy of employees, which is especially important in the context of the transition to a digital economy, and form an effective corporate strategy for improving it.

How is testing done?

The portal user gets access to a test of 64 questions that test his digital competencies. Based on the results of testing, an individual trajectory for improving digital competencies is built. Total in the system more than 1000 questions; the more correct answers the user gives, the more difficult questions he is asked.

Assessment criteria: 5 digital competencies

Digital literacy is measured as an index consisting of five components (sub-indices) :

  • information literacy;

  • communicative literacy;

  • creation of digital content;

  • digital security;

  • problem solving skills in the digital environment.

Each of the sub-indices is measured through a series of questions in the questionnaire. For more information on the components of digital literacy, see Appendix No. 2.

Uniqueness test

  • The International Competence Framework takes into account all modern requirements for knowledge in the field of digital technologies.

  • The scientific base of the test was developed by specialists from the NAFI Analytical Center, experts from the DigComp group at the European Commission (for more details, see Appendix No. 1).

  • The platform algorithm creates a unique set of questions for each test taker, guided by their current level of digital literacy.

  • The measurement methodology and the competency framework have been adapted for Russia, taking into account the digital infrastructure and software market of our country.

  • The test is easily integrated into the certification and educational systems of educational institutions, corporations and government agencies.

  • The technique is patented, passed the examination and was registered with the Federal Service for Intellectual Property.

Appendix 1. Methodology for testing the level of digital literacy

The digital literacy testing methodology is based on the DigComp international competency framework developed by experts from the European Union countries. All test questions were adapted by NAFI experts for the Russian digital agenda, taking into account domestic legislation, information infrastructure features, government digital services, etc.

The main advantage of the chosen approach is its adaptability, since it reveals digital literacy through a set of real requirements for the knowledge and skills of applicants described in vacancies posted by enterprises. This is a kind of aggregation of the current demand for “digital competencies” from the economy. The measurement methodology is based on the evaluation of five indicators:

  • information literacy;
  • communication literacy;
  • digital content creation;
  • digital security;
  • digital problem solving skills.

Information Literacy

This sub-index reflects the skills of Russians in searching for information on the Internet, competence in working with various types of data and evaluating the reliability of messages on the network.

Communication Literacy

The skills of communicative literacy include the ability of Russians to use various types of online services and electronic devices, compliance with the rules of communication on the network.

Digital Content Creation

This sub-index of digital literacy demonstrates a person’s competence in creating and editing digital content, skills in working with copyright on the web.

Digital security

Digital security shows the ability of Russians to assess the risks of social engineering and online fraud when working in the digital space, knowledge of measures to ensure the security of personal data, as well as an understanding of the negative impact that digital devices have on the environment, physical and mental health of a person.

    RESTON, VA — Children will have the opportunity to swim with a mermaid at the Reston YMCA as part of the upcoming Healthy Kids Day on April 29.

    This free event, which starts at 10 a.m., will include family-friendly activities to promote a healthy start to the summer season for area families.

    All YMCA branches in the D.C. metro area, including the Reston YMCA located at 12196 Sunset Hills Road, are participating in the annual event.

    Both here in France, on the fields of Champagne, and in the wild mountains of Macedonia, Russian special regiments covered themselves with unfading military glory. But the sacrifice made on the altar of the Fatherland in a foreign land was also great. The graves of Russian soldiers are scattered throughout France and throughout Macedonia. The largest military Russian cemetery, where more than a thousand of our brothers rest, is located near Mourmelon (Marne).

    At the international conference in Chantilly November 15 19On 1616, it was decided that in the coming spring to look for solutions to the war by going over to a general offensive on all fronts, provided with a maximum of forces and technical means.     The revolution has come. Russia is out of order. The special regiments of the Expeditionary Corps were disbanded by the French command and military worker companies were made up of them. The allies were suffocating under the onslaught of the German hordes deployed from the eastern front. The name of the Russian was then synonymous with a traitor.
    Hundreds of Russian soldiers, wounded in their national pride by the chaos in their homeland, and here by the contemptuous attitude of the allies, began to grow up to be sent to the Front. After long hesitation – so great was the distrust of the Russians, the formation of the Russian Legion was finally allowed – from volunteers of special regiments.

    The heroism of the Russian soldier in France reached an extraordinary height in the combat work of the Russian Legion, which was included in the Moroccan shock division, the best division of France. The historian writes “who are these wonderful people who, shouting incomprehensible words, do the seemingly impossible – they pass that zone of death that neither the Zouaves nor the arrows could pass. These are the Russians of the Moroccan Division. GLORY TO THEM.”.

    May 1918 The Germans abandon their best forces and tear at the front of the French army. In one leap, they jump over Chemin de Dam, cross the river Ain (…). The road to Paris is open. The Moroccan Division, thrown to the rescue, on horseback along the Soissons-Paris highway, takes the entire blow of the German boot. But the Germans bring fresh forces into battle and push the Zouaves in the center. At this critical moment, when it seemed that everything was already lost, the last reserve, the Russian Legion, rushed into the counterattack. The historian writes: “The Russian Legion rushes forward, with officers in front. Even the doctors, seized with the fervor of enthusiasm of this glorious phalanx, have forgotten their direct mission of mercy and, together with the fighters, break into the ranks of the enemy…”.
    This battle cost the life of the Russian Legion, losing 85% of its staff and almost all officers. Then the French press of that time for the first time adds a flattering word and calls it the “Russian Legion of Honor”.

    Later, the Russian Legion receives a long-awaited replenishment of volunteers from special regiments and, as part of a separate battalion, takes part in breaking through the fortified Hindenburg line. For the sacrifice with which the Russian Legion performed his maneuver, the courage and courage with which he carried it out under the enemy’s hurricane fire, he will be presented for an award by the French Commander-in-Chief and receives the “Military Cross” and “Forager” on the banner.

    If the gap in the fortified line of the Hindenburg was not deep enough and did not bring a final solution, then the morale of the enemy was so undermined that he began to withdraw his troops … The Russian regiment was transferred to Lorraine, but rumors of negotiations had already spread.

    After the armistice, the Russian Legion entered Germany, where it was sent to the city of Worms assigned to it for occupation.
    Great was the surprise and indignation of the Germans to learn that their occupying troops were Russians. Our national white-blue-red flag was developed on the banks of the Rhine.
