Description

Worcester Academy is an independent, co-educational (mixed-sex) school for students in grades 6-12 and graduates. From the height of its ancient hill in Worcester, the school looks at life a little differently than most day and boarding schools in New England. This is the place where life takes an interesting turn. This is called a reality where success is not easy to achieve, but it is worth it to make every effort. The unique teachers and coaches of the school teach to “dig deeper” and “push harder”. In the historic area on the school grounds, you can see buildings from 19th century where people think like the 21st century. Ancient languages are studied in modern classrooms. ” The touching story of a Saints wide receiver – First & Goal

Perhaps Saints fans or just football fans have noticed that a certain New Orleans wide receiver Deonte Harty began to be mentioned in the press. The consonance of the surname with Deonte Harris and the comparison of informational reasons suggested that journalists make a typo when they write about Harris. He is not the most stellar player, the mistake is quite understandable.

American fans even laughed at Mike Florio when he wrote: The Saints used the second round tender on Deont Harty. In the comments to the news on PFT, fun began: they say, Florio wrote again, what should we call the receiver now?

It was a little alarming that Nick Underhill, a journalist who has been writing about the Saints for the past ten years and probably knows the entire composition of the Saints, began to constantly make the same “typo”.

Everything turned out to be simple: Deonte Harris and Deonte Harty are indeed the same person. The story of a football player’s surname change was not advertised as widely as, say, in the case of Chad Ochosinko. At the same time, it is interesting and touching.

Harris is a native of Baltimore. As a child, he was noticed thanks to the Pop Warner program. Deonte had a very successful season at Archbishop Curley, finishing one season with over 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. The school ended up finishing for the first time in history with a positive win/loss balance. Nevertheless, Harris did not appear on the radar of colleges, no matter how hard the high school coach tried to draw attention to him. The answer, as a rule, was one: “Well, what are you! He’s too small!”

Harris is really only 168 cm tall, now he weighs 77 kg – of course, at school it was even less. So, due to its small size, colleges did not pay attention to it (there was one proposal from the NCAA Division II program, and that, according to Harris, was “incomplete”). Deonte attended Assumption College, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Not the most outstanding NCAA Division II football program (although he himself believes that he could well play in Division I: “I knew that I had the ability. I decided for myself: I will not prove that they are wrong. I will prove my case. Nothing good comes out of negativity.”

In college, Harris managed to set several records: 6173 yards, 45 touchdowns, 14 of them on the return (a NCAA record that has stood to this day). Curiously, at first, Harris didn’t want to play punt return at all. The coach persuaded him. One of the first returns ended in a fumble (“Oh shit!”), And then Deonta had to fight the fear of losing the ball for a long time. Over time, he developed his own strategy: the main thing is not to get hit.

“I’m getting attacked by some big, fast, strong guys,” says Harris. “So I have to be faster than them. ”

Despite his success in college, it didn’t come as a shock to Deonte that he wasn’t selected in the draft. Of course, it’s hard to accept that at least 254 people are better than you, but he expected to go to the NFL as an undrafted free agent. In this capacity, he was signed by the Saints in 2019. (The Saints were one of the teams that screened Harris in college.)

Alas, Deonte injured his hamstring on his first day of camp. The time has come for organized team training – again the same damage. The first day of training camp – well, you get the idea – the same injury. Harris, it seems, was destined for the role of the eternal player in the practice squad. Best case scenario. He believed that out of 90 players coaches see him the most recent.

Every day Harris waited to be expelled. I tried to calm myself down by talking to my parents, but I understood that all this was also stressful for them. They are 17 hours away from here, they cannot come, hug, support. Deonte says he was twitching 24 hours a day. The usually nonchalant, cheerful guy couldn’t control his emotions. It got a little easier after a preseason game with the Jets, in which Harris made a 78-yard return.

“I thought yes. It was a moment of calm. Knowing that I’m here.”

And yet, when it came time to cut the roster to 53 people, Harris was confident that he would be expelled. He remembers that the players were warned: if you get a call, there are two options. Either you are expelled, or you are expelled and transferred to the training squad. If you don’t get a call, just come and work.

Deonte did not expect the third option: he received a call to say that he was staying in the squad. Harris couldn’t sleep after the call. I got up at 5 am and went to the training facility. Actually, it was a day off. There was no need to come anywhere, the Saints had no training that day. Deonte sat in the car in the empty parking lot and smiled broadly.

“I finally breathed a sigh of relief,” he recalls.

Harris had a great rookie season. 338 yards on punt return is the best in the league. First undrafted rookie in Saints history to be selected to the Pro Bowl. Selected to All-Pro Team.

Next season: punt return 207 yards, 186 yards receiving and touchdown, 51 rushing yards. But the 2021 offseason changed everything. Most fans know the story that Harris was arrested for drunk driving that summer (he later served a three-game ban).

“I made a mistake and learned from it,” Harris says now.

Then the real nightmare began. As soon as Deonte left for training camp, he was informed that his girlfriend Ashley had a miscarriage. Harris’s family and parents remained with her, but the football player himself could not come and suffered even more from this. Two months pregnant – they did not even have time to find out if it was a boy or a girl.

“This pain will stay with us forever,” says Harris. We will learn to accept it. We believe in the guy upstairs. Everything happens for a reason. ”

The tests didn’t end there. Two weeks later, Deonte was informed of the death of close friend Colin White. They literally grew up side by side, in childhood at least twice a week spent the night with each other. Colin did not play sports, but the boys were always together.

“His parents were mine, and mine were his parents,” says Harris. “If you saw one of us, the other one was definitely there.”

The news that Colin had died of a heart attack seemed unreal. Harris did not want to go to the funeral and see a friend lying in a coffin. On the day of the funeral, New Orleans played a preseason game with Baltimore. Deonte still found the strength to go say goodbye to Colin. He does not remember the details of what happened, his brain was so clouded.

The drunk driving case was still pending, the issue of the league’s punishment was up in the air. Harris knew that he would receive a disqualification, but he did not know when and for how many matches. Plus, he had to face a sharp negative in his address on social networks.

“I tried to disconnect from it,” says Deonte. – Ignore it, stay away. After all, the people who loved me were still around. And I was the same.”

In the first week of September, Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans. The Saints were about to fly to Dallas. Harris bought a plane ticket to Baltimore. By that time, he was determined to quit football and fly home. His world collapsed, Deonte plunged into depression.

Who knows how all this would have turned out if not for faith in God and the help of the family.

“I just didn’t want to cross everything out,” says Deonte. “My family and I have invested so much to get here. I couldn’t give up, I had to go through all this shit, fight. If I gave up, everything we did would be a waste of time. I prayed a lot and tried to keep my faith.”

Harris did not fly to Baltimore. On September 12, 2021, he took part in the first game of the regular season against the Packers. An attentive spectator could see how, after a 55-yard touchdown, Deonte folded his arms, as if cradling a child, and then raised them to the sky. Thoughts about the losses of the last month haunted me.

One of the people who helped Harris during a difficult period of his life was his stepfather. Marlon Harty, a sergeant with the Baltimore Police Department, raised Deonte from the age of seven. The boy always perceived him as his own father. Deonte’s mother, Lisa Harty, says her son wanted to change his last name in high school and college, but was unable to do so due to his minority.

There was a moment before Christmas 2021 when Deonte decided to pay tribute to a man who had a big impact on him. He expressed his gratitude to his stepfather by changing his last name to Harty.

“I’ve always dreamed of this,” Deonte said. – He is my hero. He accepted me as his son, accepted my brothers. I am honored to bear his name and pass it on to my children. It is very important. Actually, he’s not a very emotional person. I’ve never seen him cry before.”

Another gift for the family was Ashley’s pregnancy.

Choosing a school when moving to the US / Sudo Null IT News

Many people with children who are planning to move to the US have heard about the need to carefully choose their area of residence. It is especially important to understand which schools belong to the chosen address.

After the move, the head is usually spinning and there is no time to sort out the intricacies. It is important to understand and remember the following: websites of real estate agencies and aggregators like Zillow do not provide up-to-date and correct information about whether a particular address belongs to a particular school!

Below is a step-by-step guide to identifying schools associated with a specific address and analyzing those schools.

First, a small cheat sheet (information may vary slightly for different states):

Elementary School – c K (Kindergarten) to 5th grade (from 5/6 to 10/11 years old)

Middle School – c 6 1st to 8th grade (11 to 14/15 years old)

High School – 9th to 12th grade (15 to 18 years old)

K-8 – combined Elementary + Middle, more common in new development areas and sparsely populated areas.

Charter school – charter schools. Private schools funded by the state. They require a separate story. In short, a good charter school is chosen by lot. Therefore, they cannot be guided as a “default” school

Magnet school – specialized schools with additional subjects.

Sometimes it is possible to study in one school for all ages K-12 (often in different cases). It is important to understand that in this case, the school ratings will most often refer to High School.

In any case, you need to carefully read and check all the information in each case.

1) By far one of the most convenient sites for finding real estate is www.zillow.com

You can start your search from there. The interface of the site is intuitive, but the boundaries of the districts related to schools are not completely and not always correct.

For the initial review, you can make a filter by the rating of schools by turning off private, charter schools and choosing a rating of more than 7. Decent areas are already visible by the concentration of good schools. Please note that Zillow uses data from the www.greatschools.org website, the interpretation of which is a separate conversation.

So, we roughly determined the area where we want to live. Having turned on the filter by the price of rent or purchase, we are sadly convinced that there are very few options.

But it is important to make sure that the options that we have are suitable for us.

In this case, the work of checking the correctness of information about the school was done by the agent. And his information confirms Zillow’s data. This is a rather rare option, but even in this case, I recommend making sure the information is correct.

Here is a strange situation. Only Elementary and Middle are listed on Zillow. The agent gives three schools, but the Middle school is different.

Let’s try to figure it out and find these schools

2) Determine the County we are interested in.

County is the smallest autonomous territorial unit in the United States. There are more than 3000 of them in total. They are responsible for the schools in their territory. The biggest problem is that counties most often have unique websites, systems of registration, accounting, etc.

Very often, counties divide one city into several parts. Sometimes in quite unexpected ways. Orlando (FL) split example:

As you can see, Orlando is divided into 3 counties. And 3 more counties cover the outlying suburbs.
You can determine the county using the service www.getzips.com/zip.htm or similar.

I’m sure everyone knows what a ZIP is, but let me remind you that this is a five-digit postal code, usually indicated at the end of the address, after the state name. In the examples above, ZIP 32828 and 32746.
On the resource above, we make sure that this is Orange County and Seminole County

3) We are looking for a link to a service for determining whether schools belong to an address. Due to the fact that the sites of all counties are different and saturated with information, it is often difficult to quickly find the way to the service. The easiest option is to type a request in Google, like: “ orange county school enrollment ”

Google will helpfully slip the desired link. We go through it and fill out the form. It seems that everything is obvious here, but here the lack of a unified approach begins to affect and bugs and glitches appear. Sometimes there is sensitivity to case, extra spaces, etc.

If a particular house fails to “break through”, you need to check a couple of neighbors, taking the address from the same Zillow.

There is also an alternative option – to find a map of school zones on the county website, but it is often difficult to clearly define the boundaries there.

Please note that the real situation does not match either the agent data or the Zillow website data.

Moreover, some Region2 is specified for Elementary. This means that several Elementary schools are linked to this address at once. We get a specific list by clicking on the link:

Specifically, for the 2nd region – three Elementary at once, and one of them is Magnet – i.e. with specialization.

Unfortunately, these schools usually differ greatly in quality. Parents can choose, but when places run out in a good school, lottery begins. In short, if there is a bad school on the list, and you start studying from the middle of the year, the chances are very high that you will end up in the worst one, since there will no longer be places in good schools.

Now we need to check the quality of schools. To do this, go to the next step.

4) We break through the school on rating sites. In the US, there are several popular school evaluation websites that differ in their methods. It is worth paying attention to the following:

Every site has pros and cons. The analysis of the school on all sites allows you to get an integrated assessment.

Note that Schooldigger is the least popular site and doesn’t always rank on the first page. But, in this case, we were lucky and the links go in a row.

Another problem is that due to the popularity of some names, there may be several schools with the same name in different states. We need to keep a close eye on this, paying attention to County.

Let’s try to consider the result.

5) Niche.com

It is Niche that many realtors are guided by when they promise “A-rated School”

However, the problem is that the Niche rating is integral and only partially depends on academic success. It can be seen that this school has A + only for diversity. The ethnic composition is implied: Latinos, Black American, etc.

Also an important indicator “Free or Reduced Lunch” is an indirect indicator of income level. The lower this figure, the better.

6) Now let’s see Greatschool

Here the score is on a 10-point scale. 4/10 – bad.

This site has the most reviews, where parents and students rate the school. This also needs to be paid attention to.

If you watch the school on 9/10 or 10/10, read the reviews carefully. Parents often complain that they put a lot of pressure on their children to get good grades. They describe bullying, etc.

7) And, finally, the least popular rating on schooldigger.

I like this site because it is the most convenient way to view academic results. The position of the school in the overall ranking throughout the state is also visible: 1451 places out of all 2118 Elementary schools in all of Florida. Badly.

Apparently, the realtor in this case tried to mislead.

Indeed at “4540 Messina Dr, Lake Mary, FL 32746” there is a small chance of getting into a good Lake Mary Elementary School, but a much higher chance of getting into a bad Wicklow Elementary.

School Digger is also interesting because it allows you to compare different counties and districts, sorting them by school ratings. Find the best schools in different sectors, etc.

With it, you can select several ZIPs for which you can already search for rent or sale on Zillow or on Craiglist.

Whether you’re adopting a blind pet or your longtime companion is losing their vision, you want to do what’s best for your vision-impaired animal. Follow these tips on helping blind cats and dogs to keep your companion safe and comfortable.

Set blind pets up for success

A pet who has lost or is losing their vision may feel vulnerable and anxious, so it’s important to create a consistent routine and a safe, comfortable home environment.

After adopting a blind cat or dog, keep them confined to a comfortable, small area to help them become more confident before slowly introducing them to the rest of the house. If your pet seems uncomfortable or confused, guide them back to their safe zone.

Before you give your pup or kitty free rein, ensure you’re setting them up for success. Even pets who were born with low or no vision will benefit from these safety measures.

How to care for a blind cat or dog in the home

Stick to a schedule: Consistent feeding times, walks, etc., will help your pet know what to expect.

Try to eliminate potential hazards: Cover sharp corners on furniture, block off stairs, keep furniture in the safe place (or if you do move it, move only one piece at a time), avoid clutter or other unexpected obstacles.

Use sound cues to help pets navigate and stay comfortable: Try using wind chimes by exterior doors to steer outdoor pets toward thresholds; if your blind pet gets startled by other pets in the house, add a bell to your other pets’ collars; try talking to your pet (or gently shaking their bed) before touching them or waking them from sleep to avoid startling them.

Add tactile markers such as mulch, sand or landscaping stones to create safe pathways.

In time, your pet will develop a mental layout of their domain and may learn to safely navigate stairs and other challenges, but it’s good to be cautious—a bad experience can cause injury and erode confidence.

Focus on training

Training is crucial for any newly adopted companion, but it can be especially helpful for blind pets. The training process itself will help build confidence and strengthen the relationship between you and your pet. Plus, a well-trained animal will be more likely to respond and follow your instructions if they’re in danger. For dogs, you can even use a specific verbal cue to warn them of danger while on walks.

Always use positive reinforcement. Never punish, hit or yell at your pet.

Be consistent. If you have a partner or children who also interact with your pet, make sure you all use the same approach.

Have patience! Training a new pet won’t happen in a day or even a week. You might have setbacks, but the rewards are worth it.

A little patience goes a long way

You’ve probably seen videos of dogs who needed to have one or more of their legs amputated due to an accident or illness. But then, the moment they’ve healed, they’re running and playing with their four-legged friends as best they can, happy as ever.

They may not be as fast, and they might stumble at times, but they seem just as overjoyed at the thought of playtime as they were when they had all four legs.

This is because dogs, along with most other animals, adapt to disabilities extremely well. And this same resilience can also apply to dogs who lose (or are born without) part or all of their vision.

Vision loss is a natural part of many dogs’ lives. While most dogs with vision loss experience it gradually as they get older, others may experience low vision or even blindness from an early age. Some dogs are even born blind.

But vision loss doesn’t have to stop your dog from enjoying life. Their habits may change, but you might be surprised at how well they get along — especially when you lend a helping hand.

“Dogs don’t rely on sight nearly as much as we do,” says Dr. Matthew Belden, a veterinarian in the small West Texas town of Ballinger. “Even after 38 years in practice, I am often amazed at how quickly pets adapt to their condition.”

Make small changes to your home

When it comes to your dog’s safety and your peace of mind, a few minor home adjustments can pay off in a big way. Consider making some of the following changes for your vision-impaired pet:

Block potential hazard areas

Dogs with poor vision have a harder time knowing when they’re putting themselves at risk. If you have stairs or a pool, you need to block these areas off so your dog doesn’t accidentally fall.

You may also want to block off certain high-traffic areas of your home, especially if you have a small dog. They may like to lay in a small kitchen or workout area, but these rooms can be problematic if your dog can’t detect your movement as well.

Walk around your home and take note of anything sharp at or near your dog’s eye level. Objects or furniture with sharp corners should be moved or covered with soft coverings or protective bumpers.

Soft corner guards, which are designed for babies but can be just as useful for dogs, are available in most supermarkets. You can also buy (or make) edge cushions to line the entire edge length of a fixture.

Lay down scents

Like the smell of fresh cooking that guides you toward the kitchen, scents can be used to guide vision-impaired dogs as well.

“If your pet has difficulty doing something it needs to do, like finding the doggy door, you may be able to help with smell,” Dr. Belden says. “You can mark the door with a special scent and then spend some time helping the dog in and out. They will usually get used to it pretty quickly.”

Experiment with fragrances like the smell of your dog’s favorite treat to nudge them along the right path.

Add texture to the floor

You can also use mats, rugs and other textured floor coverings to help your dog orient themselves in your home. This can be especially helpful around important areas like food and water bowls or the door they use to go outside.

If their food and water bowls are on hard flooring, try placing them on a big rug or doormat in the same spot. If they’re on carpeting, put down a smooth, plastic mat instead. Your dog will feel these textures with their paws and know that they’re close to their food and water.

Experiment with bells and other noise-makers

Bells can help visually impaired dogs know when other people or animals are moving around or approaching them.

To start, try clipping a small bell to your belt or pant leg whenever you’re inside the home. If you have other dogs or cats, clip one to their collars too. The soft jingle of these bells will alert your low-vision or blind dog to the presence of someone or something moving around them and prevent them from getting startled.

And next time you buy your dog a new toy, try one that makes noise. A toy with a bell or squeaker inside can give them a satisfying dose of sound feedback in the absence of eyesight.

Invest in a halo (or make your own)

If your dog bumps into objects a lot, they might benefit from a halo, a special harness with a plastic loop that hovers over their heads. The loop hits objects first and gives them a moment to stop walking in that direction. Over time, most dogs get used to wearing the harness and feel more comfortable walking around.

Name-brand halos can be on the expensive side but may be worth the expense in the long run. Several generic alternatives are also available through popular online retailers.

… but don’t change too much

Dogs rely on their senses of smell, hearing and touch to a greater degree than humans do, and even more so when their vision is poor.

In many cases, a dog that seems blind can still see some light and shapes. You might notice these dogs turning their head when a light comes on or following you with their eyes when you walk past them.

Dogs with low vision will usually continue to use even the faintest sense of sight to identify the outlines of objects. Completely blind dogs will use the familiar scent of a sofa or texture of the floor to figure out which part of the home they’re in.

Before you move anything, take the following factors into consideration:

Like people, dogs find great comfort in knowing where to go when they’re hungry or thirsty. Try not to move their food and water bowls, unless you really need to, as this can make them feel anxious.

The same is true for furniture and other familiar fixtures they’re used to living with. When a dog has vision loss, it uses familiar objects like a couch, table or chair to know where they are. Moving or removing these objects can make them feel lost in their own home.

Don’t feel like you have to separate your dog from other pets in the home unless you have reason to. “Other pets can actually help. They leave scent trails wherever they go that a blind pet can follow,” Dr. Belden says.

Create a relaxing retreat

When dogs lose their vision, they tend to move around less and spend more time in one familiar area. You might notice them sitting in their favorite spot more often, enjoying the sounds and smells of the home.

Designating one area for rest and relaxation means they’ll always have a “happy place” to fall back on whenever they’re feeling tired or stressed out.

Place their favorite bed, blanket and toys in an area they feel comfortable. If they drag their stuff around a lot, try to place everything back in the same spot each morning and before bed at night.

Leave the TV on

Modern humans tend to watch a lot of television. Dogs don’t exactly watch TV like people do, but they do get used to the sound of it being on.

If it’s normal for you to keep the TV on for long periods of time, consider leaving it on throughout the day, even and especially when you leave the home. It will make them feel more comfortable and may stop them from getting confused or disoriented by other sounds.

The noise from a TV can also help them figure out which part of the home they’re in.

If you don’t have cable, you can stream countless multi-hour live video feeds of nature scenes for free on YouTube. Cornell University’s Cornell Labs, for example, stream a 24-hour bird camera, complete with audio ambience for your pet.

Keep the conversation going

There’s a good chance you already talk to your dog. There’s even evidence that dogs like the high-pitched “dog-speak” people tend to use around them.

When they lose part or all of their vision and rely more on sound, dog-speak can become even more important. Talk to your dog as much as possible, and they’ll take comfort in hearing the sound of your voice.

Keep playing and going for walks

When a dog loses their vision, it might feel necessary to incorporate fewer walks and less playtime into their lives.

However, most dogs still benefit greatly from physical activity — even if it has to be a little slower. These activities can work wonders for their bodies and minds.

On walks, try to keep your dog on a shorter leash and stay mindful of where they’re walking. They won’t have the same spatial awareness outdoors as they do inside your home, so they’re more likely to bump into trees or mailboxes along the way.

Let your dog set the pace as much as possible, giving them a chance to absorb your neighborhood’s familiar smells and sounds.

Signs your dog might be losing their vision

Vision changes aren’t always easy to recognize in your pets. Dogs tend to deal internally with injuries and disabilities, and then adapt to them, more quickly than humans do.

Most of the time, their natural reaction to vision loss and other physical changes is to accept the changes and adjust their lives accordingly. You may not even notice these changes until you make an unrelated change to your pet’s environment.

“Many owners have blind dogs and don’t know it because the dog is so good at navigating their living space — indoors and outdoors — without the benefit of sight,” Dr. Belden says.

When changes do become noticeable, they can include:

Getting startled easily.

Bumping into furniture and other fixtures, especially any that were recently moved or added to the home.

Taking longer to find a toy or treat (or not noticing it at all) when one is tossed in front of them.

Hesitating to jump on and off of beds or in and out of cars. They might also be leery of using the stairs, in either direction.

Hesitating to go outside at night, especially when an outdoor light isn’t on.

Squinting or wincing in bright light, due to increased light sensitivity.

Squinting or wincing as they walk, out of fear of bumping into objects.

If you think your dog might be losing their vision, scheduling an appointment with a veterinarian is the first step. Any changes in a dog’s behavior should be assessed to rule out serious conditions that need immediate care.

If your dog is in pain or you notice visible symptoms like redness, inflammation, swelling, discharge or anything else that concerns you, schedule a vet appointment as soon as possible.

After your vet visit

If a vet does find that your dog is losing their vision, it can make you feel sad for your pet. This is a very normal and understandable feeling to have for a beloved pet facing a difficult change.

However, it should offer a small bit of comfort to know that, from your dog’s perspective, reduced eyesight is simply something they will or have accepted and are quickly adapting to — if they haven’t completely adapted already.

Vision loss becomes a part of their normal, everyday life. With a little help from their owners, they can be just as happy without sight as they were with it.

“While sudden vision loss does happen because of trauma and disease, it is usually a slow process, allowing the dog to compensate with other senses,” Dr. Belden says, noting that blindness alone is not a reason for euthanization.

“The main thing to keep in mind is that the pet isn’t suffering nearly as much as we would, under the circumstances.”

Why do dogs go blind?

Dogs can lose their vision for many of the same reasons humans do. Some cause a gradual loss of vision, while others result in near-immediate blindness.

“Blindness is quite common in elderly dogs,” Dr. Belden says. “Cataracts are the number one cause. Corneal scarring from trauma or chronic dry eye is probably second, followed by glaucoma, detached retinas and neoplastic disease.”

Different dog breeds can have different risks of developing cataracts at some point in their lives.

One study of 72 breeds saw noticeable swings in how often dogs developed cataracts after age 7:

Fewer than 10% of Great Danes, boxers, collies and Siberian huskies

Around 15% of border collies, Rottweilers and miniature poodles

More than 25% of Portugese water dogs, field spaniels, flat-coated retrievers and Havanese

The study also shows how some breeds can be predisposed to cataracts earlier in life. In this case, about three of every 20 English mastiffs, silky terriers and bearded collies examined had developed cataracts before they turned five years old.

Canine glaucoma, when high pressure inside the eye causes vision loss, also occurs more often in certain breeds. Jack Russell terriers, chow chows, basset hounds and Shar-Peis are among the most common dogs seen with primary glaucoma.

Surgery could restore a dog’s vision, but it isn’t for every dog (or owner). Success rates are high — as high as 85-90% for cataracts — but they can vary depending on breed, age and other factors.

Surgery can also be expensive and too heavy a financial burden for many. For this reason, many owners choose to instead help their pets adapt to life with cataracts.

Plus, a vet may be able to offer ways outside of surgery to treat your dog’s condition and help them live comfortably.

Veterinarians can also sometimes help slow the progression of other causes of vision loss, such as corneal and retinal damage, to give your dog the best possible eyesight for as long as possible. Early diagnosis of sight-threatening conditions offers one more reason to schedule regular check-ups with your vet.

Talk to your vet about any other conditions your dog has, even if they don’t immediately affect their eyes. Diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and certain infections — along with other issues — can cause eyesight problems down the road, especially without proper management.

A little patience goes a long way

Living with a visually impaired dog can be just as rewarding as living with one who has full vision. But you might still feel frustrated from time to time, especially when you and your dog are still getting the hang of new habits.

During the transition, it’s important to be patient with your pet and give them the love and support they need to feel comfortable. Over time, new habits will become second nature for everyone involved, no matter how many legs they walk on.

Dr. Belden gives concerned owners comfort in knowing that our canine companions don’t feel sorry for themselves like humans do; nor do they face the same psychological hurdles adapting to a disability.

“I have to remind owners that their dog doesn’t read, drive, watch television or do needlepoint. They don’t need to see to be happy.”

Gray lived with me for 15 years. He was the perfect city dog: calm, calm, getting along well with dogs, cats, birds and people. I don’t remember his behavior ever causing inconvenience or problems.

The time has come, the dog has grown old. At first, Gray began to stall. Slowly but surely, at the age of 11-12, the rumor gradually faded away. His character changed, he became irritable, withdrawn, sometimes even biting. At that time, I could only surround him with care and treat his condition with understanding.

During the period of loss of vision or hearing, the dog may be overtaken by severe depression . She does not understand what is happening to her, the body ceases to obey, which greatly suppresses her. The reaction of the dog can be completely different: from almost mild symptoms of stress [1, 2], to severe aggression. A dog can hide in a shelter and not leave it for days on end, it can howl or whine, start to dirty the apartment or spoil things. You can’t get angry and scold her. Your task is to reduce stress and rid the dog of depression. Surround her with care and affection. Buy her new toys and treats. Be patient. Reward only good behavior and ignore bad behavior. Domestic difficulties were solved quite simply. When I called Gray to eat, I drove or tapped the bowl on the floor. Water was always in the same place, as were toys and bones. He got used to the gestures quickly, because he already had training experience. While Gray was young, we did a lot of things, incl. and exercises at a distance, so now I didn’t have to rack my brains much.

Since the dog can no longer hear, incl. and suppressing unwanted behavior of the word, it’s good to train her to match your displeased facial expression with the word “no”, you can still wag your finger. These gestures are good to use for minor violations: the dog pulls food from the table, tears up a book, climbs onto the sofa. If the dog is barking, the easiest thing to do is to ignore it, because. any expression of attention to this action encourages the dog to bark more [4]. It is best to distract the dog with a toy and switch attention to a more useful thing. If the dog expresses aggression towards someone, just take him away, distract him and think about the reasons for this behavior.

Blindness overtook Gray at about 13 years of age. The reason is banal – cataract. He was not completely blind: in daylight he did not stumble upon objects, but in the dark he did not orient himself, of course, he did not distinguish small objects and faces. When Gray began to go blind, I was seized by a panic: how to cope with a deaf and blind dog, I did not know at all. In addition, Gray had an even worse depression than the first time. He did not want to stay at home alone and hid in the closet, he was terribly nervous on a walk, howling.

Leave your dog chew toys when you leave home. If she still has her hearing, you can leave the radio or TV on.

The way out was not found immediately, it was more intuitive than conscious. I chose the solution that at that time seemed to me the simplest: while the vision has not completely disappeared, you need to teach touch commands .

I taught very simply: I touched him and then showed him a gesture that he already knew. There were four teams: “let’s go”, “left”, “right” and “stop”. As well as an inviting gesture. The gestures are extremely simple and developed from our daily communication with him. When I started the movement, I touched the back of his head, and then just went forward, sometimes beckoning him with my hand behind me. He saw that I was leaving and followed me. “Right” and “left” meant touching the right and left ear, respectively, and a gesture meant a wave of the hand and a turn of the body to the right and left. In short, use touch only in certain situations, when the dog knows it will happen .

The time came when Gray stopped seeing and gestures well. Now, following me, he was guided by the smell, he was afraid to go far. But what a walk when a dog walks with his nose buried in his legs, afraid to tear himself away from the owner. Gray and I learned to walk the streets all over again. I had to completely switch to physical contact.

He walked away about 10 meters and suddenly realized that he was left alone, I did not have time to quickly approach. Gray turned and trotted away from me. I ran after him. He went into the bushes without seeing them, and then I overtook him. Of course, he was delighted and soon calmed down, but the fact that Gray did not orient himself in the courtyard in the dark firmly stuck in my head. But what about being in a foreign place? I imagined that blind people get used to the arrangement of things in the house and are well oriented in space. Then, going out for a walk, I began to bring Gray to all the obstacles that are in the yard. He knew their smell, and in bright light he could distinguish them, but in the dark he could not use the rest of his senses. Gradually, he got used to their location in the dark, and after a while, when a mental map of the courtyard appeared in his head, he no longer panicked and easily found a landmark if he suddenly got lost. In a strange place, we also carefully passed all the obstacles, Gray remembered their smell, their approximate location in space and felt much more relaxed. Of course, he was always in control.

At home, tactile signals can be used: these are ordinary tracks made of a material different from the main floor covering. Your dog will feel the difference with his paw pads. By laying paths to all important points for the dog in the house, you can create a map along which the dog will move without fear of getting lost. If you have a private home, you can do the same in the yard with fresh sawdust, hay, or fine gravel. You can saturate with (various) fragrances in all important places: front doors, places for eating and drinking, bedding, corners and door frames.

Once a friend of mine asked me to help with a blind cat. The cat could not get used to the location of the doors and felt confused when she wanted to get into the corridor. Then we took an old mobile phone , set it to vibrate, set it to vibrate every 15 minutes and put it on the floor in the hallway. After some time, the cat realized that it was necessary to go to vibration and quickly got used to it. To reduce the chance of injury in an unfamiliar place, you can buy or build your own hoop harness or cane collar. These are devices that do not allow the dog to stumble on an obstacle. Harness-hoop is an ordinary harness made of leather or fabric with a plastic or metal hoop attached to it in front at the level of the dog’s muzzle. As the dog approaches the obstacle, the hoop hits it first, protecting the dog from injury. The dog must be controlled, because. the design can get tangled in the branches of a shrub or catch on a piece of furniture.

Collar cane is designed for the same purpose. Long plastic probes are attached to an ordinary collar, which are 8-10 cm longer than the tip of the dog’s nose. Its disadvantage is that if the obstacle is narrow (post, chair leg, trunk), it will pass between the probes and the dog will stumble upon it. A blind or deaf dog can and should lead a normal life. And only a loving and caring owner can help her with this.

With a deaf and blind dog, you can play educational and outdoor games, search [5, 6, 7]. Toys for a blind dog are better to choose squeaky and flavored. This will make it easier for her to find them. For the blind, games with the presence of smell are suitable.

In a small article it is impossible to reflect all the nuances of training, I tried to talk about the most common problems and their solutions.

Canada is known for its excellent educational system and Vancouver contributes to this reputation with a good selection of schools and universities. Whether you are interested in a budget education, independent education or homeschooling, there are plenty of options in British Columbia. The province offers education in French and/or English.

The school year in Vancouver runs from September to June and children start kindergarten at the age of 5. The main school divisions are elementary (grades K-7) and high school (grades 8-12).

Vancouver students have access to free education in all public schools. Most schools provide all teaching materials, including textbooks, and places are distributed according to the place of residence. You can register your child in a public school by obtaining the status of a resident.

There are 92 public elementary and 19 high schools in the Vancouver school system. In addition to schools, there are centers for extracurricular activities, they offer programs in art and culture.

Children in Vancouver can enroll in the StrongStart BC program before starting school. Here at Tick Tots Around the Clock we strive to meet every family’s individual needs, from running late on the commute, to a much needed evening out. We are proud to offer extended evening, overnight, and weekend care at a minimal extra charge. Our program serves children from age 6 weeks to 12 years and is open 24 hours a day; 7 days a week, except on designated closed holidays and events. Our core curriculum hours are Monday- Friday 9:00am-4:00pm.

Infants :

Age Range: Our Infant Program serves children from ages 6 weeks to 18 months.

We know that this is a very precious age and we want to come alongside you and work towards developmental milestones, healthy attachments, and a strong home/school partnership. Our staff is handpicked for their natural ability to care for young infants, and their passion for this age group. We provide hands on sensory activities to promote learning, as well as a variety of toys and materials to develop small and large motor development, language, and social understanding. At this age every baby has a unique schedule and with our 1:4 ratio, teachers can learn their children’s needs quickly and efficiently. Communication, both formal and informal, is key for building the relationships between families and teachers, daily intake/outtake reports are prepared by the teachers, and parents have the opportunity to document any activity at home as well. In our nursery the love of learning and school begins, and at Tick Tots Around the Clock that love will continue for years to come!

Toddlers :

Age Range: Our toddler program serves children from 18 months to 36 months.

No longer content with peek-a-boo and multiple naps throughout the day, our toddlers are moving and grooving from morning till evening! Bursting with energy and a boundless curiosity, they are exploring the world around them as quickly as possible while refining development skills. The toddlers are offered unstructured play time each morning in order to allow them to enter the group at their own pace before moving into the day. We offer daily scheduled activities such as art, music, physical activities, dramatic play and story time in our flexible schedule. Our teachers are quick to promote the use of language, encourage movement, and create an environment that encourages social interactions. Our teachers are also potty training pros, working with families to move children from diapers to underwear and keeping consistent with the training moms and dads begin at home!

Pre-K1 (3 year olds) :

From here your toddler will transform into their own little individual! With an age specific play yard, and energetic teachers, our 3 year old’s use their seemingly unending energy to move through the day. We provide a flexible schedule that includes art, group time, inside centers (blocks, manipulative, science, library) outside large motor activates and exploring. There is a heavy emphasis on language development and social conduct. Our teachers focus on developing the social abilities that our 3 year old’s will need as they grow, such as: sharing, manners, healthy habits, and of course, strong attachments and friendships. Beginning learning is introduced during group time, as our teachers use games and play to help children recognize colors, shapes, number amounts, and beginning science and math concepts.

This age group enjoy using their new vocabulary and social skills to dive headfirst into learning. They eagerly participate in group art projects, nature walks, organized outdoor games, and independently work at centers available in the room. Willing and able to do everything themselves, they are encouraged to develop self-help skills and independent thinking. Teachers guide the day with cleverly designed lesson plans that promote learning through play and hands on discovery. Building upon the foundation laid in our younger rooms, teachers expand the children’s learning as counting and shape and color recognition become more advanced, not to mention working on personal behavior such as manners and social skills.

Pre-K2 (4 to 5 Years) :

Practically all grown up, our 4’s and 5’s are focused and well rounded. They have a solid grasp of what they like, what they want to do, and how things work. With their teachers acting as guides and facilitators of learning, our 4’s and 5’s spend most of their time involved in “hands-on” activities that tie into academic principles. Our teachers in this program skillfully weave in academic goals and objectives as they build on what children can do, and challenge them to try new things. Our kids contribute their own ideas and use their own problem-solving strategies to explore the world around them. Our 4’s and 5’s practice writing, have access to a variety of age appropriate books and language materials, and use each other to bounce new learning concepts around. While they still enjoy building castles in the blocks, managing a small flower shop in dramatic play, and helping care for the class pet in science, they also crave the pride of being able to write their name, learn their letters, and prepare for kindergarten. If you want your child to be prepared for kindergarten, our pre-school program lays a great foundation and will set them up for a successful kindergarten year!

Schoolers :

The learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings! With a unique school age program that includes transportation to and from various local elementary schools, our before/after school program combines learning and fun for ages 5-12. Available before school (5:30am-8:00am) and after school (3:00pm-6:00pm) our program offers a homework period, outdoor games and activities, movies, art projects, and much more! Focused on building the whole child up, our school age program presents learning in a laid back and loosely structures setting, giving our big kids the chance to take a breath after a long day at school. These big kids are full of curiosity and ingenuity, tackling life’s big problems (like how to build the perfect racetrack, using science to make exploding goo, or creating one-of-a kind masterpieces) and learning how to be leaders and positive role models.

Care is offered Monday through Friday, before and/or after school and on holidays like spring break, winter break, and summer.

Summer Camp :

Our Summer Camp is offered from June-August and you will not believe the fun to be had. With dress up days, field trips, movie days, or water days EVERY WEEK, our campers are never without some excitement. Our unique character building program highlights 1 character trait per week that our campers embrace and model.

Drop-In Care :

Have a non-traditional job? Trying to take that one extra class? Or maybe just a much-needed nap? Tick Tots Around the Clock has got you covered with a hourly, full day, evening, overnight, and weekend program available for much less than your average babysitter. Our extended program serves children from age 6 weeks to 12 years and is available every day, except on designated closed holidays and events. Pre-registration is not required but is strongly recommended. However, our services are available to both Tick Tots Around the Clock families and to families with children who do not regularly attend Tick Tots Around the Clock.

A full day of activities as well as meals and snacks are provided.

What are your hours of operation?

We are open 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. Excluding holidays and events. Please see our Family Handbook for date listings.

What age children do you accept?

We accept all children beginning as young as 6 weeks through 12 years old.

Do I need a reservation to drop off my child?

No, a reservation is not required but strongly recommended. For special occasions we do recommend making a reservation to guarantee space, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Our classrooms will fill up fast, and infant reservations are always recommended.

What do I need to do to sign up?

The registration process is fairly easy. The first step is to fill out our registration form. This can be found either on our website under “Registration”, or at the center. It typically takes about 10 – 15 minutes to fill out. We will also need your child(rens) current immunization records for all non school age children. You will also need a valid photo I.D. You can drop off your paperwork beforehand or bring it in on your first intended visit. For kids that seem a little more apprehensive about their first visit, we encourage you to bring them by a little early for a personal tour from one of our staff members.

Is there a registration fee?

We have an annual registration of $65; this is inclusive for an entire fiscal year starting the day you register and is per family. Once this is paid you become a “member”. All families are required to pay the registration and become members.

What do we do at Tick Tots Around the Clock?

When you enter Tick Tots Around the Clock, there will almost always be a game, learning, crafting, or some type of exploration happening. We follow a structured schedule which is full of educational and fun activities and games. We have a large playground, board games, computers, Legos, play kitchens, costumes and much more! Each Friday and Saturday night are theme nights. All activities are centered on the theme which makes it easy for the children to get involved.

Do the kids nap?

Due to the fact that many of our children have different schedules and are sometimes here for short periods of time, every age group has different designated nap times. If you let us know that you would like your child to nap, we will certainly do our best. We have plenty of resting mats, cots and soft blankets. If your child will be here in the evening and may get sleepy you are welcome to provide pajamas/sleepwear for your child to make the transition easier upon returning home from an exciting night at Tick Tots Around the Clock!

What If my child gets upset or cries?

Most children, even if a little upset upon drop off, are quickly captivated by all of the activities and fun things to do at Tick Tots Around the Clock. Crying and sad faces are typically gone within minutes. If, for some reason after about ten to fifteen minutes a child is still uneasy, we will reach out to you by phone. This is not necessarily to ask you to pick up your child, but to update you on their mood and ask for any advice in consoling them.

What are drop off hours?

24 hours a day / 7 days a week excluding holidays and events. Our goal is to provide worry free childcare for your children in a safe and fun environment.

What form of payment do you accept?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and Money Orders. You can also make a payment through Tuition Express. No cash or checks are accepted. See Family Handbook for more information on Tuition Express.

Is transportation provided to local schools?

Yes, we transport to and from 17 local schools within 4 miles of our locations in Alief and Houston ISD

Are field trips offered for the children?

Yes, our buses are available for area field trips. We transport children who meet the state’s age requirements. These children are given opportunities to see their community and other places of interest year-round. We provide fun and learning for the children and guarantee the maximum protection plan for parent’s peace of mind.

Are meals and snacks provided?

Yes, all children are provided hot meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks at no additional cost. Staff is trained in nutrition, USDA and CACFP guidelines, and proper portions for young children. Our center participates in the CACFP Food Program so you can rest assured your child is getting a healthy and nutritious meal!

Can I bring food?

Yes, you are more than welcome to pack a meal and/or snack as long as there are no nut products; we are a nut free facility. All meals brought from home can be refrigerated and heated up upon meal time if needed. Food may only be heated not cooked. No soda, candy, or sugary snacks or drinks are permitted.

Is your staff trained?

Yes, Tick Tots Around the Clock staff members are required to follow the Texas state regulations training. All staff are trained in First Aid/CPR, Infectious Disease Control, Injury Prevention, and Child Abuse Awareness. Additional training in curriculum, child development, classroom arrangement, classroom management, age-appropriate activities, nutrition, field trip planning and OSHA regulations provides the skills needed to create a quality learning environment. Our teachers are experienced, well educated and professional. The team at Tick Tots Around the Clock is made up of fun, caring, and passionate individuals with one common goal: to provide a positive and safe experience for all the kids in their care. Finding team members who meet the standards set in place is both rigorous and thorough. Our staff have a true passion for children and having fun! We perform extensive background checks including FBI fingerprinting.

Do you offer camps or special programs?

Camps are one of our specialties! We have summer, winter, and spring break camps. There are both half day and full day options. The best part is that there is no weekly or monthly commitment to the camps; you can choose which days you want to bring your child in! Each week is a different theme, and each day is full of games, crafts, explorations, and activities. During the school year we offer a pre-school program with a structured curriculum and weekly lesson plans.

Are immunization records required?

We are required to have current immunization records on file for all children who are not currently enrolled in school. If your child is enrolled in school or a daycare other than Tick Tots Around the Clock, we require that you provide the full information including name, address, and phone number. Please note that if your child is not enrolled in school we do require immunization records to be up to date and accurate.

If your family has chosen to exempt your child from receiving immunizations, we ask that you provide us with the State Vaccine Exemption Affidavit. It must be the original copy.

Is there internet viewing of my child at your center?

Although we do have several surveillance cameras both indoor and outside of our facility, our internet viewing system is for the Director, Board Members, or authorized staff only. This rule is in place to enforce our strict media policy and to protect the safety and privacy of others. The same cameras are fed to the front desk for additional monitoring by administrative staff.

Is Tick Tots Around the Clock safe and secure?

The security and safety of your child is of utmost importance to us! For this reason, all of our doors remain locked from the outside. Our main entrance is locked and each parent must be identified before their child is released (must present drivers license). Only parents/guardians may pick up unless prior arrangements have been made with staff Tick Tots Around the Clock. Parent identification information is stored in our software system for quick identification. We have alarmed entrance/exit gates and doors into the play area which is monitored by our staff; any visitor beyond the gate/door must be escorted by a staff member at all times. We have video surveillance cameras in several different areas of the center, lobby and front door. All staff have extensive training in emergency procedures whether due to injury, illness, safety, or a weather emergency.

Keeping the children in our care safe is a top priority of the staff at Tick Tots Around the Clock. Important measures are taken each day to insure the safety of all children. Our front entrance is a controlled access entry and our staff and management will only open the door upon visual recognition. We encourage parents to stop by for information and tours; as a safety precaution the front office will request a valid state photo ID. Only staff is permitted in the classroom and play areas; parent will drop children off in the lobby area.

Is your center clean?

At Tick Tots Around the Clock, keeping our center clean is a high priority to us! We value a clean environment for your kids, our kids and us! We have dedicated staff to clean and sanitize hourly. For this reason, we ask that your children only wear socks or booties into the classroom areas. All toys and play areas are cleaned and sanitized daily. If your child has any symptoms of illness, we ask that you not bring them into Tick Tots Around the Clock.

The organization and holding of health-improving holidays for children brought up in the families of students, graduate students, faculty and staff is a long-term tradition of the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. In 2007, the residential buildings were reconstructed. The territory of the boarding house is 3.2 hectares, landscaping is 50% of the territory. The boarding house is surrounded by 700 hectares of forest, which is also the territory of Moscow State University. The boarding house is located in the suburbs of Moscow, in the vicinity of Zvenigorod, in a picturesque resort area, commonly known as “Russian Switzerland”.

This cozy corner of the Moscow region is famous for its extraordinary landscapes. Quiet beauty of coniferous forest, chirping of birds, rustle of herbs will help you to forget about the bustle of the city and fully relax or work fruitfully in a calm environment.

On the territory of the boarding house “Universitetsky” there are two sleeping four-story buildings for 200 people. For accommodation there are single and double rooms with all amenities: modern furniture, satellite TV, Internet (Wi-Fi), refrigerator, shower, bathroom. On the floors there are spacious, lighted halls with soft sofas and armchairs. All buildings of the boarding house are interconnected by covered walkways. There is a free guarded car park.

The activity of the boarding house for many years has been aimed at holding conferences, thematic seminars, trainings, business meetings, negotiations, presentations, training of personnel for the faculties of Moscow State University.

Every year, during the winter and summer school holidays, the Universitetsky boarding house organizes the Star University children’s health camp (about 800 children a year in 4 shifts). Conducted scientific and educational programs for schoolchildren: “Lift to the future”; “UMA Foundation for Support of Young Scientists”; “NOTE”; “NGO Foundation EMSH”.

Annual student sports days, field seminars and conferences for students of the faculties of Moscow State University are also held here: Russian Academy of Justice; OKB “Gidropress” Rosatom; initiation into students.

We offer various sports entertainment games and programs for corporate clients.

Talented and experienced organizers of children’s leisure offer programs of different ages, including the creative and health development of your child.

The child learns a lot of new and interesting things with the help of our summer activities. In June, we will talk with children about trees, wild and garden flowers, go on an exciting journey and get acquainted with summer games and fun. Our art work will be directed to the study of these topics. And in music lessons, the child will be able to reveal his inner potential. We offer your child a stay in our center from 1 hour to 3-4 hours a day under the constant supervision of experienced teachers. Your child will have classes on early development, music and creativity. The kid will be able to study both in the Montessori room and be in the playroom, equipped with toys according to age. We have facilities for hygiene procedures. In addition, your baby will be given a snack in the form of fruit puree or bio-yogurt. We are waiting for our little friends!.

We will collect all the knowledge and prepare the children for school 4 subjects: mathematics, reading, writing and the world around us, as well as classes with a psychologist in a psychological sandbox for the emotional-volitional sphere. The child learns a lot of new and interesting things with the help of our summer activities. In June, we will talk with children about trees, wild and garden flowers, go on an exciting journey and get acquainted with summer games and fun. Our art work will be directed to the study of these topics. And in music lessons, the child will be able to reveal his inner potential.
