At-Home Activities For Toddlers

How to captivate the smallest ones with family history

Ekaterina Shakharova, Unsplash. com

Every parent who is fond of genealogy strives to give their children an awareness of the family as something more than “dad-mom-me.” Preschool teacher Marina Abramova is convinced that a child’s understanding of his origin and knowledge of past generations of ancestors will give him the basis for all-round development. To make it interesting for children to learn the history of the family, consistency and an entertaining form of study are important. Here are some simple games to help parents.

Consultation with a genealogist

A detailed discussion with an expert genealogist of your situation, options for its solution and prospects for further study of family history child to the concept of the family as a whole. At this age, the child’s psyche develops in joint activities with adults. The child begins to pronounce the first sounds and words, and we can already offer him finger gymnastics (an adult bends his fingers for babies):

“This finger is grandpa (twist thumb),

This finger is grandma (twist index finger),

This finger is daddy (twist middle finger),

This finger is mommy (twist ring finger),

This finger is me (bend the little finger),

This is our whole family.

So the child’s speech includes the names of family members, the very word “family” gives the realization that this is something whole, and he is part of it. In addition, this game develops fine motor skills. Such gymnastics can be performed throughout the preschool period.

Why did I decide to learn the mother tongue of my ancestors?

People who came to this in adulthood tell

Didactic games

1-3 years old

During early childhood, the child continues to actively explore the world, develops his speech and visual-effective thinking.

Game “Who am I in the family?”

With the help of leading questions from an adult, children should answer who they are for their mother, father, grandmother and other family members. For clarity and better understanding, you can use a photo album.

This game forms ideas about family ties and teaches children to use names correctly: son, grandson, brother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, cousin, nephew and others.

Game “What are the names of family members”

Open the photo album and invite the child to look at family photos – first show yourself and tell about each relative. Then ask the child questions, pointing in turn to the image of each family member: “Who is this?”, “What is his name?”, “What does he do?”

This game reinforces the ability of children to clearly name their family members, develops memory, coherent speech and enriches vocabulary.

Conversations about the family

3-7 years old

Caroline Hernandez, unsplash.com

At preschool age, the child begins to actively explore the world of human relationships, the initial formation of his personality takes place. During this period, we may actively offer creative games and role-playing games.

Describe the family game

Ask the child to describe the qualities of family members: what kind of mother? (Smart, beautiful, good . ..) What kind of dad? (Tall, strict, handsome …) What kind of grandmother? (Old, kind …) and so on.

Ask them to tell you what kind of work family members do around the house.

Ask to show mom, dad, grandmother and other relatives with gestures and facial expressions.

Later that day, list the child’s definitions of family members and ask him to guess who you are talking about.

This game promotes the development of memory, creativity and speech.

Picture Family Game

Put photos or pictures of family members of different ages in front of your child. Tell the child that changes occur at every stage of a person’s life:

  • Baby – grows, develops;
  • Teenager – growing, learning;
  • A young man and a girl – grow up, study, work;
  • Father and mother, uncle and aunt — work, raise children;
  • Grandmother and grandfather — have a rest and work in the country, spend time with their grandchildren.

Conversations

From time to time on a walk with a child or on the way from the kindergarten it is useful to talk about the family and ask the child the following questions:

  • Who is related to whom in the family?
  • Who does what around the house?
  • Who is older, who is younger and why?
  • What do adults do around the house, what can children do and why?
  • Who in the family can we call old and young people and why?
  • What is a family?
  • What does friendship, love for relatives, home mean?
  • Who is your father’s grandmother?

After answering, ask for clarification: What do you think? Why do you think so? If the child is at a loss with the answer, tell yourself – with examples and fascinating stories.

Genealogical tree as a joint work

Closer to school age, when the child understands how the family works, you can proceed to compiling a family tree. You will need an A0 sheet (whatman paper), pencils, felt-tip pens, paints and photographs of relatives.

It is more convenient to plan the tree in advance on a small draft. So you will understand how much space is required, what size the leaves of the tree, branches, trunk will be, and what format the photos are needed.

Take your time to make a tree in one day. At first, only mom, dad and children can be in the picture. Gradually, the tree will grow and be supplemented by close and distant relatives, and then by ancestors.

Let the child participate – stick photos, draw twigs and leaves. Be sure to talk about who is related to whom. Along the way, tell your child interesting stories from the life of relatives.

Correspondent is interviewing

Together with your child, you can make a list of questions for relatives and print it out. Children can become correspondents and record conversations on a voice recorder. Ask older relatives to share vivid memories, ask about childhood, about youth. The interview can be taken in several approaches so that it is not tiring for the child.

Chronicle of the family

From the accumulated material, you can make a chronicle of the family. Adults or older children can write down stories from the life of relatives, and younger ones can make sketches about it. Put in the chronicle photos from trips to grandparents, their life stories. You will be happy to leaf through such a chronicle on winter evenings and indulge in memories. Such a book can be gradually supplemented and passed on from generation to generation in the future.

Coat of arms and motto of the family

Tell your child that for a long time people have been building their family’s coat of arms from symbols that reflect the philosophy of life and the main values of the family. You can invent and draw a coat of arms and a motto all together. This process helps to focus on the important things that children and parents value, that everyone in the family cherishes.

A life motto can be written next to the coat of arms. It should be short and reflect the essence of the aspirations of the whole family.

Joint creativity and time spent in common activities will help the child to realize the value of family and clan. Conversations and games about the family will diversify leisure and holidays and can become new traditions for you and your relatives. Give children time, help them absorb the best from the family, teach them to appreciate the moments – and in their memory the main bright moments of childhood will remain next to their loved ones.

Main stage: November 2017 – April 2018.

Final stage: May 2018.

Justification of the need for the project.

It should be noted that people are currently interested in their genealogy. Therefore, a family study of their genealogy will help children begin to comprehend very important and deep postulates:

– the roots of everyone are in the history and traditions of the family, their people, the past of the region and the country;

– the family is the unit of society, the guardian of national values.

This contributes to the formation of the foundations of patriotism at preschool age, the child learns behavioral patterns, realizes the goals of life and lays the foundation for the success of the goal of education – the development of the child as a person in which the ideals of the family, people and state are concentrated.

Problem statement

Pedagogical problem: children need to be introduced to family traditions and customs, to increase interest in family values.

The problem is childish: they don’t know their close relatives, their names, who they worked for, they don’t know family traditions.

Relevance of the project

Family is the first social institution that a child meets in life, of which he is a part. The family occupies a central place in the upbringing of the child, plays a major role in shaping the worldview, moral standards of behavior, feelings, social and moral image of the child. In a family, the upbringing of children should be based on love, experience, traditions, a personal example from the childhood of relatives and friends. And no matter what side of the development of the child we consider, it will always turn out that the main role in the formation of his personality at different age stages is played by the family.

That is why the problem of preserving family values, reviving family traditions becomes relevant and is determined by the huge role played by the family and family traditions in the development and formation of a child’s social and moral culture. This topic will allow you to share impressions, personal experience; will enable teachers to form the concept of “My family” in children, parents of preschoolers will be able to feel like full participants in the pedagogical process. And most importantly, the project will help strengthen the family. The family has always had a huge impact on children. It is the family that can create an atmosphere of spiritual comfort for the child, help him feel secure, self-confident, teach him to treat others correctly.

The purpose of this project is the formation of the moral foundations of the child’s personality, the culture of communication and relationships, the upbringing of love for loved ones. In preparation for the implementation, the goal was set: to show children that the family is the basis of society, a microculture (history, traditions) is created in it.

To immerse children in the project, the educator formulates a problem in front of the children. The teacher brings his family photos to the group and talks about his family members, about traditions (birthdays, joint trips to the forest), about the meaning of his name, etc. Next, the teacher asks the children a question: What do you know about your family? How did she appear? Would you like to know about your family roots? After a discussion with the children, a goal is formulated for the children: to get new information about themselves, their family, close and dear people, about the traditions of the family. This project is being implemented in accordance with the comprehensive thematic planning of the educational process, as well as in accordance with the principles of integrating the content of education in various types of children’s activities: cognitive-search, productive, playful, communicative.

                                      during the implementation of the project, the children were asked to fill up the album “My family” with photographs and stories about their fathers and mothers, where they studied, what they work with, what their work is, what benefits people bring from their profession, hobbies. In the course of work on this project, children, together with their parents, studied the roots of their family, compiled a genealogical tree. In accordance with the characteristics of their family, they made up the coat of arms of the family, came up with the motto of the family. Parents took an active part in the work on the project. With the help of their parents, children were asked to find answers to the questions: “What does my name mean?”, “How was it chosen for me?”, “In honor of whom was I named?” Thus, parents become indispensable participants in organized events, participate in the collection of materials on the topic of the project. To expand knowledge. The educator offered the parents booklets, memos, recommendations, game libraries on the topic of the project. In the process of preparing and implementing the project, a unique opportunity arises for meaningful interaction between children and parents in the process of joint search and cognitive, creative activities, which contributes to family unity, rapprochement between adults and children. Cooperation between children and parents, participation, spiritual interpenetration give rise to love and appreciation in the heart of the child, the need to communicate.

    the longest queues and unfinished repairs (map, infographics) — USI Online

    10 May 2019, 10:53

    A new academic year has already begun in pre-school educational institutions in Odessa. However, some kindergartens have not yet started their work – somewhere because of repairs, and somewhere because of long queues.

    Correspondent of the Ukrainian Information Service compiled a map of state kindergartens in Odessa and collected information about the presence of queues in each district of the city into infographics.

    In total, there are 130 state children’s educational institutions in Odessa: 30 in Kiev and Suvorov districts, 42 in Primorsky and 28 in Malinovsky. TOP-3 kindergartens with the longest queues in each district we have highlighted with stars.

    Such a large number of kindergartens in the central area of the city is not accidental. This is due to the fact that most of them are designed for a small number of groups: from 2 to 4 for kindergarten.

    This is also related to the fact that in the Primorsky district the largest queue of children in one group is 39people in the “Manger-garden No. 48″ on the street. Dyukovskoy, 12. In second place is the Primorsky district – “Nursery-garden No. 137”, in the third – “Nursery-garden No. 75”, in both kindergartens 27 people per group.

    The same line of 27 people in one group and in kindergarten No. 165 on the street. Ak. Williams, 5/5 in the Kiev region. Gardens No. 260 and No. 85 are in second and third places, respectively.

    In the Suvorov district, the longest queue is of 24 children per group in two kindergartens at once – No. 5 on the street. Vysotsky, 25A and No. 125 on the street. Krugovoi, 1. In third place is nursery school No. 145.

    The situation is almost the same in the Malinovsky district. The longest line here is in the garden number 26 st. Bulgarian, 60 and is 25 people. In second place is kindergarten No. 93 with 24 children, and in third place is No. 238, where there are already 20 people per group.

    It should be noted that, according to art. 14 of the Law of Ukraine “On preschool education”, the norm in groups is:
    For children under the age of 1 year – up to 10 people;
    From 1 to 3 years – up to 15 people;
    From 3 to 6 – up to 20 people.

    But in fact, the number of registered children in one group of a kindergarten in Odessa often reaches even 40 people, here the children sleep in twos on the same bed and share one closet.

    Kindergarten queues infographic

    Sometimes this leads to illegal actions by both kindergarten staff and parents. Parents try to bypass the lines in every possible way, including resorting to threats and blackmail. On the other hand, educators also use the situation for personal gain.

    It is forbidden in private messages to blackmail an official / headmaster of a school or kindergarten “to place a teacher in a particular school, kindergarten, otherwise I’ll tell you everything”. We won’t, tell me. I guarantee free advertising to every next writer of such threats. Anonymous messages about the cost of the device will not help anyone , – notes the director of the Department of Education and Science of Odessa Education Elena Buinevich .

    The official noted that the only way to get into a school or kindergarten out of turn is to forge a certificate of benefits.
