History

The club was founded as Celaya FC in February 1954. Dr. Miguel Iriarte Montes was the club’s first president and registered the club in the Segunda División Professional, which at the time was the second most important league in Mexico. In only its second year of existence, the club finished second behind Monterrey Football Club, which achieved promotion.

In 1957-58 the club achieved promotion after winning the league, where they were unbeaten in their first 18 games. The club formalized the promotion on December 15, 1957, when they defeated Nacional 2–1 under Argentine coach Florencio Caffaratti and took the top spot from Tampico.

The club played their first match in the top flight on 13 July 1958 against America, who defeated them 4-1. The first goal in the top division was scored by Felipe Negrete, although many others believe it was Mateo de la Tiera (due to a free-kick mix-up that led to the goal). The club struggled desperately in the early games but did not win until the 8th round, when they pulled out a 3-2 victory over Zamora. The club managed to maintain their place in the league thanks to a one-point advantage over Kualta’s team, who were relegated. That year the club finished 13th in the league with 19points, winning only 4 games, Ranulfo Rosas was the club’s top scorer that year with 8 goals, followed by Jones and Appichafoco, both with 5.

with 12 points, leaving Monarcas Morelia and Deportivo Zamora to fight for survival. Ferreira was the top scorer for that year with 9 goals, followed by Ortiz with 8 and Cabañas with 4. The club’s mediocre performance let them down in the 1960-61 season, when the league ended with a record of 6 wins, 7 draws and 13 losses , a total of 19points, the club was relegated to the second division. They started the tournament quite well, but when coach Florencio Caffaratti left the club, it was led by Gabriel Unate, who was very difficult to win. The club was officially relegated on 15 January 1961 after a 0-0 draw against Tampico Madero. There were only a few players in that squad who had a good year: Quaglia, G. Mercado and Ismael Ferreira, they scored 7, 5, and 4 goals respectively.

The club spent the 1960s in the Second Division where, after 10 years of mediocre performances, the club was finally disbanded at 1970 year. A few years later, Celaya, along with the Technologico de Celaya club, were revived with the aim of restoring the city of Celaya to its former sporting glory. Celaya entered the Tercera Division and in 1973-74 the club won the league. Celaya continued in this vein, but in 1975-76 she lost to the Segunda Division de México in the final against San Luis Football Club. In turn, Tecnológico de Celaya would later be relegated to Tercera Division, where they played a few more seasons before being disbanded.

The club spent the 1980s with mixed success in Segunda B before breaking back into Segunda A in 1991. From 1991 to 1993, again 2 clubs represented the city of Celaya: Celaya and Linces Celaya.

Atlético Celaya Era

The club achieved its comeback in 1994 when two clubs from the second division (Atletico Cuernavaca (Morelos) and Escuadra Celeste de Celaya (Guanajuato)) merged. Another team, Atlético Espanyol also joined the tandem at a later date.

All the merged clubs brought a piece of their former symbolism to the newly minted club: the name of the new club was taken from Atlético Cuernavaca (although its name also coincides with the former Atlético Espanyol), the blue color was taken from Celeste de Celaya, and the bull was taken from Atlético Espanyol , who also gave the new team its nickname – Toros (bulls).

Atlético Celaya won the second division and were promoted. The first year in the Primera Division came in the 1994-1995 season after winning the Liga de Ascenso, where they managed to leave Pachuca behind. At 19In the 95-96 season, former Real Madrid legends Emilio Butragueño and Hugo Sanchez came to the club, who helped the club achieve such results: 14 wins, 10 draws and only 10 losses, a total of 52 points, and the club also made it to the quarter-finals of the cup for the first time in its history where FC Monterrey won. The first match was played in Monterrey, where, after 90 minutes of play, the referee recorded a 2-2 draw. The second match was played in Celai, where the clubs again did not reveal the strongest, 0-0, but the team from Celai went further on away goals. In the semi-finals, the club faced Veracruz, the first match was played in Veracruz, where Celai managed to win with a minimum score of 1-0, securing an advantage for the next match. The second game was played in Celai, after 90 minutes of opposition Celaya scored 5 goals and was on her way to her first Mexican Cup final. In the final, the club faced Necaxa, who had passed UANL Tigres in the quarter-finals and America in the semi-finals. The first match was played in Celai, where the clubs parted with the world, 1-1. The second game was played in Mexico City at the legendary Azteca Stadium, where after 90 minutes the clubs finished with zeros on the scoreboard. The league’s controversial decision was not to play extra time or a penalty shoot-out, but to award the Necax Trophy with an away goal in the city of Celaya.

In the 1996-97 season, due to the grief of losing the cup through an unfair decision, the club finished last in Group 4 with 5 wins, 2 draws and 10 losses, for a total of 17 points.

But now the club is at the bottom of the standings. The team also had financial problems which led to the sale of their First Division license to an industrialist from Morelos during the winter of 2002-03. He formed a new team called Colibris de Morelos, but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. At the same time that Atlético Celaya disappeared, her older neighbor sister Celaya was relaunched again when La Piedad moved to Celaya. This club was made up of the likes of Mauro Nestor Guerc, Antonio Lomeli, Felipe Robles, Luis Fernando “Scoponi” Sandoval, Marcos García Nascimento, David Pacheco and Josémir Lujambio, but it wasn’t long before the club disbanded again in 2004 .

New time

The club was revived again in 2007, when the club from the first division, Querétaro became known throughout the country. The club celebrated its first year in the elite with a good play-off qualifying round, but after a controversial decision, the club was liquidated by the Mexican Football Federation due to player problems. The club was sold due to the fact that Querétaro was relegated from the first division, which allowed clubs belonging to the same owner to play among themselves. The club has played in the Segunda Division de Mexico since 2008. In 2010, the club defeated Tampico Madero in the final and was awarded as Tamaulipas State Champion.
