History

In 1920, Joseph Young arrived in South Florida to create his own Florida City of Dreams. His vision included the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean extending to the west, with artificial lakes, infrastructure, roads, and a coastal waterway. He wanted to include large parks, schools, churches, and golf courses; all of these industries and activities were very important to Young’s life. After spending millions of dollars building the city, Young was elected as the first mayor at 1925 year. This new city quickly became home to northerners known as “snowbirds”, who fled from the north in the winter and then fled from the south during the summer to escape the harsh weather. By 1960, Hollywood had over 2,400 hotel rooms and 12,170 single-family homes. Around 1920, Young bought thousands of acres of land and named his new town “Hollywood by the Sea” to distinguish it from his other real estate venture, “Hollywood in the Hills” in New York City.

The

Florida Guide, published by the Federal Writers Project, describes the early development of Hollywood, an early example of the planned community that proliferated in Florida during the real estate boom of the 1920s:

In the early days of development, 1,500 trucks and tractors were used to clear land and grade streets; two yacht pools, designed by General George Washington Goethals, chief engineer for the construction of the Panama Canal, were deepened and connected to the intracostal waterway. A large power plant was installed, and when the city lights were first lit, ships at sea reported that Miami was on fire, and their radio signals and red glow in the sky brought people to help from miles away.

Federal Writers Project, “Part III: The Florida Loop”, Florida: A Guide to the Southernmost State (1947)

Potential buyers of the land were enticed by free hotel accommodations and entertainment, and were “driven through the future city along paths cut through palmetto thickets; some areas were so deserted and abandoned that many of the women were said to be hysterical, and few fainted. Young had visions of lakes, golf courses, a luxury beach hotel (Hollywood Beach Hotel, now Hollywood Beach Resort), country clubs, and the main street of Hollywood Boulevard. After the hurricane in Miami at 1926 Hollywood was seriously damaged. local newspapers reported that Hollywood was second only to Miami in losses from the storm. After Young’s death in 1934, the city faced other devastating hurricanes and the stock market crashed due to personal financial failures.

Hurricane Irma hit Florida in 2017, causing extensive damage. Due to the spontaneity of the hurricane, about 700 elderly residents of the nursing home died. In the aftermath of the hurricane, it was discovered that some of the deaths were not actually the result of the hurricane, but the poor conditions they found themselves in after its aftermath. As a result, four employees of the nursing home were charged with negligence and manslaughter. Following the damage caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity created an initiative called “Rebuild Florida” to help citizens affected by the disaster. Initially, the focus of Rebuild Florida was the Housing Repair Program, which offered assistance in rebuilding the homes of families affected by Hurricane Irma. The program prioritizes vulnerable low-income populations such as the disabled, the elderly, and families with children under five. The success of this program has had mixed results across the city, with hundreds of citizens claiming to be left without help.

That’s not to say Brown isn’t being robbed of talent: he’s a great receiver, and the chances of him learning any of that from Johnson are slim (there aren’t any). However, Brown is more commonly referred to as “Hollywood” these days because Johnson realized he was from Hollywood, Florida during a 2017 game against Kansas State.

US Music Education: Universities and Tuition

      To the list of articles

      Education in the USA

The musical education received in America is considered one of the best in the world. US music universities traditionally occupy the first places in international rankings of educational institutions, and graduates of overseas conservatories conquer the most famous concert venues on the planet.

      US music college programs

Music universities in America tend to be small institutions, each with its own curriculum, admission requirements, and other requirements.

The choice of degrees that can be obtained in the States is also quite wide. High school graduates entering US music schools can enroll in one of the following types of bachelor’s degree:

      • Bachelor of Music is the most common degree in music universities in America. A Bachelor in Music may specialize in performance, music production, music technology, and music history and theory. Sometimes specialization is concretized to a certain genre or type of music: jazz theory, history of religious music, etc.
      • Bachelor of Fine Arts mainly specializes in the study of musical theater or dance.
      • Bachelor of Arts in Music is a broader field of study than the degrees listed above. Some schools allow students to choose to major in the music business or music management.
      • Bachelor of Science in Music – This degree is suitable for students who plan to pursue scientific research in music.
      • Bachelor of Music Teaching , as the name suggests, designed for students who want to teach music to elementary and high school students.

In a number of musical universities in America, students have the opportunity to continue their education after receiving a bachelor’s degree. Universities offer many master’s and doctoral programs in various fields.

The best music schools in the USA

Every year, American rating agencies, as well as various print and online publications, publish national rankings of educational institutions for future musicians. For example, at the end of 2016, The Hollywood Reporter magazine, which tracks events in the film industry and related industries, ranked the Top 25 US music schools. A selection of the top 20 conservatories in the United States has also appeared on TheBestSchools.org, one of the most famous online educational publications.

Despite some differences in the structure of ratings, they still have quite a lot in common.
Both tables include such famous educational institutions as:

      The Juilliard School, New York

The undoubted leader of music education in the USA. It is this educational institution that has occupied the first lines of international rankings of music universities for many years. Among the graduates of the university are Robin Williams, Kevin Spacey, Nina Simone, Mark Wood and dozens of other famous actors, musicians, composers.

      Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia

Another regular in global rankings. In the QS World University Rankings 2016 Top 100 Performing Arts Universities in the World, the Curtis Institute of Music ranked 13th. The university is known for its selectivity in relation to students. According to the latest data, only 4.8% of applicants enter the educational institution.

      Berklee College of Music, Boston

It is the world’s largest independent university specializing in the study of contemporary music of various genres and directions: jazz, hip-hop, reggae, rock, etc. During the existence of the college, its graduates were awarded 266 Grammy awards.

      New England Conservatory, Boston

Founded in 1867, this is the oldest independent conservatory in the United States. The university has worked closely with the legendary Boston Symphony Orchestra since its founding in 1881. The first part of the orchestra consisted mainly of teachers from the New England Conservatory.

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music also takes pride of place in both ratings; Eastman School of Music; Oberlin Conservatory of Music; Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University.

Tuition fees at music universities in the USA

Tuition fees at US music universities directly depend on the status of the educational institution. For example, a year of study at The Juilliard School will cost more than $40,000 (including the cost of food and accommodation – $60,000).

Of course, in addition to the world-famous conservatories, there are many other lesser-known educational institutions in the United States. Education in them will cost 2 or even 3 times cheaper than in top universities.

In addition, there is an opportunity for Russian students to significantly reduce the cost of music education in America. Many schools (including the most prestigious ones) have scholarship programs that allow talented children to study for free or almost for free.

For example, at Curtis School of Music , every accepted student receives a full tuition scholarship, regardless of their financial situation. Future musicians pay only for accommodation, meals and teaching materials.

Julliard School has a Kovner Scholarship covering all tuition, accommodation and meals. It is awarded to outstanding students who receive a letter of admission to the Faculty of Classical Music. Fellows are selected in mid-March after passing an audition. The main criteria for the scholarship are:

      • The highest level of merit in the arts (the decision is made on the basis of jury scores, audition results and resumes).
      • Excellent academic history (school/university grades, English proficiency, recommendations, test results are assessed)
      • Potential for personal growth, commitment to the values of art and society.

The Julliard School Kovner Scholarship is awarded to approximately 50 students per year.

Studying at the American Conservatory is an opportunity to learn from outstanding musicians from all over the world and become part of an international professional community. A US music degree is the first step to a successful career abroad.

      Areas of Los Angeles

The suburbs of Los Angeles, which include dozens of disparate areas, are located on a vast territory – both off the coast of the Pacific Ocean and on the plains and in the foothills. Los Angeles consists of many districts spread over a vast territory (1300 sq. km). Many of these areas were separate cities in the past, absorbed into Greater Los Angeles. In addition, formally independent cities located near Los Angeles are considered as part of it.

Usually there are 10 main areas: Downtown (Central), Eastside (East), Northeast Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Waterfront, Hollywood, Wilshire (west of Downtown), Westside (West), San Fernando Valley, Valley of the Crescent. In addition to Los Angeles itself, the largest metropolitan cities are Long Beach, Santa Ana and Anaheim.

      Santa Monica and the coast

The most popular areas of Greater Los Angeles are located here. The 100 km coastline stretches from the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the south to Malibu in the north. The weather here is milder than in the interior of Los Angeles, and there is also less smog. The cities and towns along the ocean coast have their own charm, most of them linked by footpaths and bike paths.

      Malibu

Malibu is located 45 km from downtown Los Angeles on the Pacific coast. The privately owned ranches were purchased in 1857 for 10 cents an acre, and Malibu is now home to the most expensive real estate in Los Angeles. The 40-kilometer coastline of Malibu consists of wide beaches, picturesque hills and cliffs. The relative distance from the center of Los Angeles makes this area very popular among the wealthy.

      Santa Monica

Santa Monica (Santa Monica) – this town in the western part of Los Angeles is very popular primarily due to its beaches. A festive and relaxed atmosphere, stylish hotels near the ocean, many restaurants and excellent shopping opportunities – all this makes Santa Monica one of the most interesting areas of Los Angeles.

      Venice (Venice)

The resort town of Venice (Venice) was created by a tobacco magnate in the early 20th century in the likeness of Italy’s Venice. Now this area is built up with luxury housing, there are many good restaurants and boutiques. However, first of all, Venice is known for its embankment – the most popular recreation area.

      Marina del Rey

South of Venice lies the pretty seaside area of Marina del Rey. It is quieter here than in the popular Venice. The main attraction of the area is the fishing village and the large harbor where more than 5,000 boats shelter. The main activities are various boating and fishing options. The colorful houses house shops and restaurants.

      Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is a famous area with celebrity palaces, expensive shops and palm trees along the streets. Beverly Hills is a unique place filled with glamor and surrealism. The area’s main shopping area is located near Rodeo Drive.

      West Hollywood (West Hollywood)

West Hollywood is located between Beverly Hills and Hollywood. The area is filled with restaurants, shops, clubs and art galleries. West Hollywood is a convenient place for walking. Particularly popular is the 2.5 km stretch of Sunset Boulevard, named the Sunset Strip.

      Bel Air and Holmby Hills

Bel Air and Holmby Hills are hilly areas north of Westwood and west of Beverly Hills. These are luxurious areas where celebrities and very rich people live. Residents of Bel Air and Holmby Hills love silence and live in isolation, so there is absolutely nothing for tourists to do there.

      Brentwood

Brentwood is a Los Angeles area located on the southern borders of the Santa Monica Mountains northeast of the city of Santa Monica. Brentwood is an urban area where the wealthy and upper-middle class live. It is in Brentwood that the magnificent Getty Center museum is located.

      Westwood

Westwood is home to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Westwood is known for many good cinemas and restaurants and is a good place to spend an evening.

      Century City

Century City is a commercial and residential area east of Westwood. Many companies, shopping centers are concentrated in Century City, the center of the district is built up with high-rise buildings.

      West Los Angeles

West Los Angeles (West Los Angeles, not to be confused with Westside) is usually called any place in the Western part of the metropolis that is not included in any of the other areas. These are mainly areas south of Santa Monica Boulevard, east of Venice and Santa Monica, and southwest of Century City.

      Hollywood

Hollywood is still a destination for millions of tourists who want to see the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, or the Kodak Theatre. However, you should be aware that many film studios have moved to other larger locations in Los Angeles.

      Griffith Park

North of Hollywood lies the grounds of Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Griffith Park is home to famous attractions such as the Griffith Observatory, the Los Angeles Zoo and the Greek Theater.

      Wilshire

Wilshire is an area of Los Angeles located east of Beverly Hills, west of downtown and south of Hollywood. Wilshire includes many smaller areas of very different levels of wealth. Part of Wilshire Boulevard is called the Miracle Mile. Mile of Wonders is the most famous shopping area full of shops, restaurants and clubs. In addition, a dozen museums are concentrated here, including the very famous ones: La Brea Tar Pits, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Petersen Automotive Museum.

      Downtown Los Angeles

Downtown Los Angeles is easily recognizable by the skyscrapers of the financial center. Unlike most other cities in America, downtown Los Angeles is not the tourist center of the city. Visitors to Los Angeles are more attracted to other areas: Hollywood, the Westside and the beaches of the coast. At the same time, downtown has such interesting and diverse areas as Little Tokyo, Koreatown, Chinatown, Olvera street. In addition, the downtown area is home to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the L.A. Live, as well as other attractions and places for entertainment and recreation.
