Admissions — Little Gators Preschool

Watching our students grow and blossom is one of the great joys of teaching. Our responsibility as educators is to prepare our children to leave Little Gators with a love of learning. 

Rolling Admissions

Little Gators Preschool is from September – May year-round program, with a rolling admissions process so children may be accepted at any time throughout the school year. Our enrollment process is designed so that the bulk of new students enter in the fall each year. Children may be enrolled if they turn 2.0 years old by August 1st of the school year.  Our rolling admissions process allows us to accept children into the program from our wait pool if spaces become available at other times of the year. If your child turns 2 during the school year, please contact us for more information.

Age Eligibility

Age Cut-Off : September 1st

If your child turns 2 years old during the School Year, s/he would be considered for Itsy Bitsy Gators 2’s Program (8:30 – 11:00 T/Th)

If your child is 2 years old by August 1, s/he would be considered for Teeny Tiny Gators 2/3 Program (8:30 – 11:00 T/Th)

If your child is 3 years old by August 1, s/he would be considered for Little Gators 3/4 Program (8:30 – 11:30 M/W/F)

If your child is 4 years old by August 1, s/he will be considered for a Little Gators Pre-K 4/5 Program (12:00 – 3:30 M-F)

If your child is 5 years old by August 1, s/he will be considered for a Little Gators TK Program (12:00 – 3:30 M-F)

Class Sizes

Class sizes range from 20-27 children. There are 3 to 4 teachers per class. Our student-teacher ratio starts with a 6:1 ratio in the young class and does not exceed 10:1 ratio in the other classes. 

application Process

1. Download our application and send it to Little Gators Preschool with a $150.00 application fee.

2. Once we receive your application we will email you a confirmation letter.

3. Tour: We have an Open House three Saturdays throughout the year. During the tour you will have a chance to meet the director and teachers and you will be given a presentation about Little Gators as well as have time to ask questions.

4. Siblings and legacies are given priority consideration in the admissions process.

5. We have a rolling admissions process and your child may be accepted to our program at any time during the school year.

6. Admissions decisions are based on a balance for age and gender.

7. If accepted you will receive a letter via email. If your child does not receive email for the year that you have requested, he/she will remain in the wait pool, moving to the next class level, unless you specify that you want your child removed from the wait pool.

Sign Up for Tours

Our tour is an in-depth presentation about our program and philosophy presented by the director and supplemented by a slideshow. You will receive a brief tour of the facility. You will then have time to ask the director questions. Our openings vary year to year. We encourage you to visit and apply.  Please call or email in advance to reserve a spot. Adults only, please. If you would like a tour during the months of July, August, or September please call or email us to schedule one. 

Tuition and Cost

The application fee is $150.00 and is due with the application.  Please call for tuition cost. 

Where do Gator Graduates go?

Little Gators provides a lot of support during the Kindergarten application process. The director meets with the parents starting in the Spring before the child is eligible to go through the Kindergarten process.

Little Gators has a Kindergarten information night each September where the director shares important information. After the parents have had the opportunity to tour the schools we have a Kindergarten Question and Answer night. The director also has individual meetings with all of the parents throughout the process.

School Calendar

School is typically in session from the week after Labor Day until the last week of May. In general we adhere to the calendars of the Independent Elementary Schools in San Francisco. 

Program Overview — Little Gators Preschool

 

Staffed with the Director and two teachers, Little Gators offers three to four-year programs, each appropriate to age level of the children, gradually increases educational levels as children prepare for kindergarten. A variety of activities are designed to provide students with balance between self and teacher-directed projects in various group sizes, in both indoor and outdoor settings. Working in areas which will stimulate perceptual and muscular development, social and emotional growth, the program consists of four separate levels, each geared to the age and ability of the class as follows:

Two-Year-Old Program

For many children, this is their first experience in a structured school environment. Our goal is to introduce new concepts of letters and numbers in learning through music, art, games, stories, cooking and other activities, while providing an environment which feels safe and loving to each child. Children have the opportunity to develop friendships with their peers and teachers during this new learning process.

During this crucial period of intellectual development and strengthening to peer relationships, children are continuing to learn letters and numbers, social studies, science, computer and fine and gross motor activities, in a style that shows learning is fun.

Pre-K Program

For our four and five year olds, the goal of this program is to prepare children for Kindergarten. Building on the concepts introduced in the Three Year Old Program, with the addition of more advanced worksheets, phonics and educational visitors, children enhance letter and number recognition and writing skills. The class is divided into small groups in order to meet the individual needs of each child based on their level of readiness for Kindergarten.

• MWF 12:00 pm – 3:30 pm

• Must be 4 years old by August 1st

Transitional Kindergarten

This is for children who need to complete a second year of Pre-K before entering Kindergarten. Children who turn 5 years old during the summer before or fall of the final year of Pre-K are eligible to enroll. The T-K class meets Monday through Friday from as a part of the Pre-K class and then divided into their own T-K group. This is offered to current Little Gators as well as those who would like to experience one year at Gators before Kindergarten.

Together with the monk, who sailed to Novgorod on a stone, a bell arrived, which is considered the most ancient in Russia.

Who doesn’t know Novgorod bells? Their voices can be heard from the belfry of St. Sophia Cathedral in the Novgorod Kremlin, next to which there are other huge exhibits of bell art. And inside the belfry, bell rarities are presented at the exhibition “Ancient Bells of Veliky Novgorod”.

Of course, if we are talking about Novgorod bells, any of us will definitely remember the famous Valdai bells with their “delightful ringing” famous in literature.

But few people know that in the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, in the building of the Offices in the Kremlin, in the exposition “History of Novgorod and the Novgorod land from ancient times to the end of the 17th century” there is a unique exhibit – the very first bell that appeared in Russia, main character today’s Treasury.

“Sugar loaf”

Finding this small bell, the shape that experts call “sugar loaf”, is not difficult, knowing the age when it was made. Moreover, there are no other bells in the first part of the exposition. The fact is that in those ancient times in Rus’, the foundry business was not yet developed enough to create chimes on its own. That is why they were brought for churches and monasteries being built everywhere from Western Europe, where at that time there were the best bell makers.

Thus, in the 12th century, a foreign bell appeared in Novgorod, which is by far the oldest surviving bell not only in our city, but throughout Russia. According to church tradition and according to researchers of the 19th century, the Monk Anthony the Roman brought him to us.

Saint Anthony the Roman (about 1067 – August 3, 1147) – Russian Orthodox saint, founder of the Novgorod Antoniev Monastery.

According to the life of the saint, compiled in the 16th century, Anthony was born in Rome to Orthodox parents. At the age of 18, orphaned, he took monastic vows. When the persecution of Orthodoxy began, Anthony prayed for a year on a seaside rock. One day the stone on which Anthony was standing broke off the rock and fell into the sea. Miraculously, he sailed on a rock to Novgorod. With the assistance of the Novgorod Bishop Nikita, Antony founded a monastery in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, spending for this purpose the remains of his property found in a barrel caught by fishermen. He ruled the monastery for 16 years, on the eve of his death, appointing monk Andrei as his successor, to whom the authorship of the life is attributed.

The life of the saint is mainly of a legendary nature, but Anthony’s activity is confirmed by historical sources: Novgorod chronicles and lists of the saint’s “spiritual literacy”.

He was canonized in 1597. For many years, his remains were considered lost, but in 2016, scientists managed to isolate the relics of Anthony the Roman from the complex of remains stored in St. Sophia Cathedral and transfer them to the church.

It is a pity that the founders of that time rarely stamped their products with the brand of the author and the year of issue. How much easier it would be for scientists and researchers to work! Indeed, today no one can say with absolute certainty whether the bell from the exposition of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve belonged to a Russian saint or not. Scientists claim that it was made a couple of decades after the death of Antony. But when it comes to a period of nine centuries, the error may well be several decades.

What can be absolutely certain today is that of the bells that appeared in Rus’ in the Middle Ages and have survived to this day, there is no older bell than this one. What is very valuable, during the whole time he was part of the bell ringing of the Anthony Monastery. And only in the last century it took an honorable place in the funds of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve.

Who knows, maybe future studies of this exhibit will be able to put an end to the determination that the ancient bell belonged to the Novgorod saint.

From eye to tongue

The exhibits kept in the St. Sophia Belfry were more fortunate. After all, in the 16th century, when the flourishing of bell art began in Rus’, including Novgorod, many craftsmen cast on them not only the year of manufacture, but also their names.

That is why today we know the names of the first Novgorod casters. The exhibition “Ancient Bells of Novgorod” exhibits the works of master Ivan, who lived in Gorodische. In 1554 he cast the Novgorod “plague” bell for the Church of the Sign. Three years later, Ivan, together with another master Philip, cast a 70-pound bell for the church of Philip the Apostle. And in 1556, together with his stepson Mitya, he created two bells for the Church of the Ascension on Prussian Street.

Other Novgorod bell-makers are also known. Their names can be read among the cast inscriptions on the products.

It is worth mentioning that until the 17th century, all manufactured bells were used for the so-called eye ringing. They were tightly attached to the shaft on the bell tower. Ringers with the help of a shaft swung the bell and hit it on a motionless hanging tongue.

And the usual lingual ringing, when the bell-ringer swings his tongue with a rope and beats it against the walls of an immovable bell, appeared only in the middle of the 17th century. But this method of ringing became much more convenient and made it possible to make bells of enormous weight. After all, they did not need to be rocked. You yourself can see this by looking at the hundreds of pounds of bells standing near the St. Sophia Belfry.

The Voice of Carthage in Valdai

Of course, when talking about the Novgorod bells kept in the funds of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, one cannot bypass the Valdai Museum Bell Center – the only museum in Russia where bells from all over the world are collected. Here you can learn almost the entire history of “voiced” production – from archaic bells from the Punic wars of Rome and Carthage to the bell casting of modern Russian factories.

Of course, the main part of the exposition of the museum center is devoted to the famous arched bell, made in Valdai for the first time. Moreover, the popularity of the products of the Valdai bell foundries and workshops was so great in the 19th century that local bells were often identified with arch bells in general, and craftsmen from other centers sometimes even cast the inscriptions “Valdai” or “Gift of Valdai” on their bells.

The museum bell center also has all kinds of door, ship, station, theater, fire, school, wind and other bells. It now seems that at that time they rang only on bell towers and in Russian troikas. In fact, there were a great variety of uses and forms of bells. Actually, you can verify this by looking at the Valdai Museum.

Impressions and reviews about Abkhazia

There are a lot of conflicting reviews about holidays in Abkhazia: someone writes that this is a poor country with lazy and rude residents who seek to extract money from tourists, and someone considers Abkhazia the Country of the soul and returns there again and again. Beyond all praise, of course, the nature of Abkhazia and its sights, clear sea and beaches – everyone speaks only positively about this.

I would love to return to Abkhazia! Almost everything impressed me: snow-capped mountains, exotic plants, magnificent abandoned places, delicious food, sincere people and some kind of atmosphere of general relaxation, calmness and simplicity. As our guide Danil said, Abkhazians live slowly. Perhaps in the high season this atmosphere is not there, because many tourists come.

Yes, there are many problems in the country, and it will disappoint you if you know absolutely nothing about Abkhazia and expect to see something like Sochi there. At the border, this difference is especially striking. Abkhazians themselves do not hesitate to criticize the government and say that it is no longer possible to attribute all the troubles of the country to the war that took place more than thirty years ago, that it is time to restore the economy and the Soviet legacy. Everyone spins as best they can, and lives mainly due to tourism: they rent apartments to vacationers, open new hotels and cafes, conduct excursions and organize transfers.

Abkhazia is an abandoned country with bad roads, water and electricity shortages, poor infrastructure and mediocre service. This must be taken into account, otherwise the rest will turn into a nightmare. For me, all the advantages of Abkhazia outweigh the disadvantages, and I didn’t even notice the disadvantages – except for bad roads in the cities, perhaps. In general, I imagined Abkhazia more destroyed than it actually is, and was surprised that there are even trendy cafes, beautiful hotels and embankments.

When is the best time to go

The first tourists come to Abkhazia in late April – early May. This is the time for a sightseeing holiday in Abkhazia, because it is still cold to swim, although I saw bathers in Gagra. The weather is unstable, it often rains, there are cold snaps. If you like sunny dry weather, choose the middle or the second half of May.

We arrived at the end of April for a week, and about half of that time it rained to varying degrees. It didn’t bother us, on the contrary, it added romance – the fogs in the mountains were amazing, the waterfalls were the most full-flowing in the year, the greenery was especially juicy, and how beautifully the rhododendrons and wisteria bloomed!

The beach holiday season in Abkhazia begins in June, when the sea warms up to +20°C and above – you can already swim. According to the reviews of the guides with whom we went on excursions, it is better to come to Abkhazia in June, because the weather is pleasant, prices are low, and there are few tourists.

July and August are hot months, the water temperature in the sea reaches +23. ..+25°С. The air temperature in this case is about + 28 ° C and above.

September is the velvet season in Abkhazia, water and air temperatures are approximately equal and stay at +23…+24°С. This is a good time to relax in Abkhazia.

At the end of April, there are already vacationers on the beaches. Mostly they sunbathe, but there are also daredevils-bathers. We found Lake Ritsa wrapped in thick fogs. Magnolia. The advantage of resting in Abkhazia in the spring is flowering plants.

Which resort to choose

Here I will briefly tell you which resort to choose for a holiday in Abkhazia in the summer of 2023, and you will find more information in the full review of the resorts of Abkhazia.

Tsandrypsh

Tsandrypsh is a quiet resort right on the border with Russia. There are no entertainment and parties here, only a quiet and simple resort life with shops, cafes, the private sector and the market. Gagra

Gagra is a classic holiday resort in Abkhazia. There is a long sand and pebble beach, a promenade, a water park, a Ferris wheel. Lots of accommodation, cafes and shops. From Gagra it is convenient to go on excursions or see the sights yourself: Old Gagra and abandoned places, Ritsa lakes, Gegsky waterfall, Mount Mamdzyshkha. The city is green and beautiful. Pitsunda

Pitsunda is a neighboring resort and rival of Gagra. Maybe a competitor in terms of sea and nature, but it is definitely inferior in terms of infrastructure. Pitsunda is a time machine in the USSR, but this is its charm. Due to the neglect of the resort, tourists leave negative reviews, but we really liked Pitsunda.

Those who want to walk in silence through the park with relic pines and feel nostalgic or imagine how it used to be here, I advise you to come for a couple of days. The pines and cypresses are gorgeous, and the sea, in which dolphins frolic not far from the coast, is crystal clear. You will be impressed! Read the comparison of Gagra and Pitsunda. Gudauta

According to reviews, Gudauta bears little resemblance to a resort. There is almost no tourist infrastructure, and if you want to relax in Abkhazia with amenities, it is better to go to Gagra or Sukhum. Gudauta is a quiet provincial town, but for this they love it. New Athos

New Athos – cypress resort. A good place to relax in Abkhazia in the summer, because, according to reviews, there is an optimal combination of humidity and air temperature. Sukhum

Of all the resorts I visited in Abkhazia, I liked Sukhum the most – cozy, beautiful, green. There is something elusive in it, some special atmosphere of simplicity and intelligence at the same time. Even the people here are different. They live relaxed and are not in a hurry: they chat over a cup of coffee, walk their dogs, play dominoes at Brekhalovka, watch dolphins. In general, the city sunk into the soul, I did not want to leave.

Vacation in Abkhazia in the summer of 2023 on a tour is a great solution if you don’t want to plan anything on your own. I advise you to buy a tour in advance so that you have plenty to choose from.

Prices for tours to Abkhazia in 2023. In summer, the most inexpensive tours with accommodation in guest houses cost from 50,000 ₽ for two, to 3 * hotels – from 65,000 ₽, 4 * – from 90,000 ₽. At the same time, for June you can find vouchers from 25,000 ₽ for two, for September – from 35,000 ₽. Cheap tours may not include transfers.

Crossing the border

I crossed the border by train, and I think it’s the easiest way, because you don’t have to cross the border on foot and carry luggage. The border guards themselves walk around the cars and check the documents, which takes about two hours.

When crossing the border on foot, you will need to walk along the pedestrian bridge over the Psou River with your luggage.

Crossing the border by car is not difficult. According to tourists, when crossing the border it is better to keep to the very right edge. Usually it takes about 40 minutes to complete – 1 hour, if you’re lucky. You can stay longer during the season. From 7 to 11 am and from 5 to 9 pm the border is busiest.

Documents at the border . To enter Abkhazia, adults need only an internal passport of the Russian Federation. It is better not to present a foreign passport so that there are no problems later with entry into Georgia. Children need a birth certificate. If you are driving a car, take a driver’s license, vehicle registration certificate and Abkhazian OSAGO insurance. If the car is not yours and the owner of the car is not with you, you need a notarized power of attorney with the right to travel abroad.

What questions are asked at the border . Abkhazian border guards do not ask anything at all, they even look at documents lazily, with one eye. But the Russian border guards carefully look at the documents and compare them with the photo. Adults are asked if this is the first time you are going to Abkhazia and with whom you are going. On the way back, they are interested in how many liters of alcohol you are carrying. Children are usually asked to give their parents’ names, their date of birth, and other simple things.

There are many cars with Krasnodar license plates in Abkhazia. Locals consider the inhabitants of the Krasnodar Territory and the Circassians theirs.

Where to look for housing

There are many housing offers in Abkhazia – you can stay in an apartment, guest house, hotel and sanatorium. But, according to reviews, the implementation and service are lame, don’t expect much.

The private sector in Abkhazia is very developed – it seems that every second person rents out housing in the country. Apartments, apartments and houses are cheaper to rent if you are traveling with a family or a group. Good apartments with a high rating in the summer of 2023 cost 4500-7000 ₽ per day, in the low season – from 2000 ₽.

Book apartments and houses on Daily, choosing from photos and real reviews. We also rented apartments through this site – conveniently and reliably. I recommend two apartments in which we lived during our holidays in Abkhazia:

• 3-room apartment by the sea in Sukhum. In the low season it costs 3500 ₽ per day, in the summer – 7000 ₽.
• Retro apartment in New Gagra by the sea. In the low season, it costs 3000 ₽ per day, in the summer – 4500 ₽.

guest houses are an inexpensive alternative to hotels. Not as pretty, but comfortable. Usually there is a parking lot and a courtyard with a kitchen where you can cook, sometimes a playground and a small pool. In the summer of 2023, economy rooms cost from 1600 ₽ per night, comfort – from 2500 ₽.

There are not many hotels in , but there is a choice. In summer, 3* hotels cost from 5,000 ₽, 4* — from 8,000 ₽ to 25,000 ₽ per day. Here are good hotels with high ratings and excellent reviews from tourists: Gagra, Dioskuria 3*, Apsny 3* (all inclusive), Apsuana Rose 4*, Amra Park-hotel & SPA 4*, Paradise Beach 4 *, Wellness Park 4* (“all inclusive”).

Trusted sites where you can safely book accommodation in Abkhazia:

• Daily.ru – a lot of apartments and guest houses.
• Hotellook, Ostrovok. ru, Yandex.Travel – hotels and guest houses, but the housing base is still limited.
• Travelata – a large selection of hotels and guest houses at tour operator prices. Here you can buy a tour or book a hotel without a flight. Very convenient and profitable.

Tips for booking and finding accommodation in Abkhazia:

• If you are going on vacation to Abkhazia in the summer, book your accommodation a couple of months before the trip.
• Most apartments can be booked from 2-3 days.
• There are problems with electricity and water in Abkhazia. We have not encountered this, but I have seen such reviews. Check with the owners of the shutdown schedule.
• For the low season, choose accommodation with heaters and underfloor heating, for the summer – with a water heater and air conditioning. There is no central heating in Abkhazia.
• Check the location of housing on the map. It happens that a large city appears in the description, but in fact the housing is located in the suburbs or a neighboring village.
• Choose accommodation close to the sea, especially if you come with children. The roads in the cities of Abkhazia are bad, and even more so the sidewalks.

In Sukhum we lived in a warm and spacious three-room apartment by the sea. Our cozy retro apartment in Gagra. This spacious loggia overlooks the mountains. A beautiful hotel with a shady well-groomed park Amra Park-hotel & SPA 4 *. He reminded me of the Ordzhonikidze sanatorium in Sochi, only restored.

Meals

Eating on vacation in Abasia in the summer of 2023 can be relatively inexpensive. In cafe we tried to try the local cuisine. Meals cost an average of 300-500 ₽. In our cafe, the bill for four came out to about 2000-3000 ₽. Please note that a 10% service charge is included in the bill. Here are the prices for food in a cafe:

• Hominy with smoked cheese and beans — 320 ₽.
• Chanakhi – 350-550 ₽.
• Khashlama soup — 300 ₽.
• Ajapsandal (without meat) — 300 ₽.
• Lamb shish kebab — 500 ₽ for 200 g.
• Khachapur “Boat” with egg — 280-350 ₽.
• Khinkali — 300 ₽ for 4 pcs.

Most of all we spent on groceries in shops and markets, because we always had breakfast at home and sometimes had dinner when after the tour there was no desire to go to a cafe.

Food prices in supermarkets are the same or slightly higher than in Russia: kefir and milk from 60 to 100 ₽ per liter, a dozen eggs – 95 ₽, cheeses from 600 to 1500 ₽ per kg, brisket – 550 ₽ per kg. Abkhazian wine is very cheap (Eshera, Psou, etc.) – only 240 ₽! Local fruits are inexpensive, for example, tangerines in season are only 30 ₽ per kilogram. In small grocery stores, prices are slightly higher than in supermarkets.

At markets I advise you to buy specialties: smoked meat for 750-850 ₽ per kg, smoked cheese – 900 ₽, buffalo and goat cheese – 1000 ₽, feijoa jam – 100-200 ₽ for a small jar. They sell a lot of nuts, dried fruits, churchkhela, spices, teas and herbs – we bought all this for gifts.

What to see on vacation in Abkhazia

There are so many beautiful places in Abkhazia that you will always find where to go and what to see on vacation in the summer: Lake Ritsa, Malaya Ritsa, Gegsky waterfall, Old Gagra, New Athos, pine trees and the Pitsunda embankment, cities -ghosts, alpine meadows… Here I will not paint everything, otherwise the article will be endless. Excursions

The resorts of Abkhazia offer many excursions, the only problem is how to choose a good one. There is little trust in street travel agencies, so I booked excursions on our favorite Tripster service. There is a huge selection of interesting copyright programs, there are real reviews of tourists and ratings of guides. It is convenient that you can talk with the guide before paying and ask clarifying questions.

It is difficult to drive around the sights of Abkhazia without your own car. We didn’t have a car, but we really wanted to see all the most interesting things and get the most impressions, so we spent almost the entire week of our vacation on excursions. The trip ended up being amazing! We saw all the main sights, learned a lot about the country and met interesting people. Without these impressions and acquaintances, our vacation would not have turned out as bright and memorable. My mother dreamed of our adventures for a few days after returning home – that’s how much we brought impressions. Group tours in Abkhazia cost 500-1600 ₽ per person, and individual tours cost an average of 10000-17000 ₽ for 1-6 people. You can take a group tour around the city, but if you want to drive around the sights all day long, especially natural ones, I advise you to take an individual one.

As a guide, we liked Danil the most, with whom we walked around Sukhum and went to New Athos. An excellent storyteller and just a nice person, I advise you to take any excursion with him – you will not regret it.

Also on Tripster there are multi-day tours to Abkhazia. They last from two to eight days. The programs are promising and varied, but the prices are more than adequate. For example, a busy week-long tour costs 37,800 ₽ per person.

We visited the delightful waterfall “Giant” on an excursion to Eastern Abkhazia. We saw the openwork station Psyrtsha during an excursion to New Athos.

How to get around

The main transport in Abkhazia is minibuses and taxis, and we used them. There are buses only in Gagra and Sukhum.

There are minibuses from Psou to any resort. End points are indicated on the windshield, but you can get off and sit down anywhere on demand. You need to slow it down with a wave of your hand, otherwise it can sweep past. Yes, it’s to zip through – drivers sometimes drive around the city at 100 km / h. Minibuses depart as the cabin is full.

Minibuses run frequently in the summer, and the rest of the time – as they please. According to the stories of locals, in the low season you can wait for a minibus for quite a long time, but we have not come across this.

The price depends on the distance and impudence of the driver. For example, we paid 150 ₽ per person for the trip from Gagra to Pitsunda, and 75 ₽ back. As I understand it, you do not need to ask the cost, otherwise they can call an overpriced price. Sometimes the price is already written in the minibus. Here are the prices for travel in minibuses in 2023:

• Gagra – 50 ₽
• Gagra – Pitsunda – 75-150 ₽
• Gagra – Gudauta – 200 ₽
• Gagra – New Athos – 250 ₽
• Gagra – Sukhum – 300 ₽

Buses . In Gagra, bus number 2 connects the old part of the city and the new one, and number 3 goes from Staraya Gagra to the village of Bzypta. Travel around the city costs 25 ₽, according to tourists. There is also bus number 5 from Gagra to Pitsunda and Ldzaa, the fare costs 70 ₽.

There are city buses and even a trolleybus in Sukhum. We took bus number 1 from the railway station to the city center. The fare costs a penny – only 10 ₽! I looked at the bus route in Sukhum on Yandex.Maps, but in reality it was different. I had to navigate the place and ask for help from the locals.

Taxis are everywhere. The most popular are “A-taxi”, “Garuda-taxi”, “Prestige”. Travel around the city costs from 100 ₽, but private traders, taking advantage of the ignorance of tourists, offer to carry for 300 ₽. The fare from the border to the resorts costs from 600 ₽ to a couple of thousand, depending on where you need to go.

I used “A-taxi” only to get around the city. It is convenient that they work without a roaming connection: as long as there is Wi-Fi, I called them on WhatsApp and ordered a car. You can install the application on a Russian number, but I did not succeed.

The final stop of minibuses in Sukhum is the railway and bus station.

Holidays in Abkhazia with children

Why do many people choose Abkhazia for holidays with children? I think it is captivating proximity to Russia. If you want to feel abroad, but you can’t go far, Abkhazia is a good option. There is beautiful nature, clean sea and air, quite free beaches.

Tourists recommend Gagra and Pitsunda for holidays with children in Abkhazia. According to reviews, Pitsunda has the best climate for relaxing with a child: a fresh breeze, relic Pitsunda pines and a clear sea in which dolphins frolic.

Gagra is an ancient city with beautiful architecture. Sights are concentrated in Staraya Gagra, and entertainment for children can be found in New. There is a water park, a Ferris wheel and a dolphinarium.

What is important to remember on vacation with a child :

• Russian medical policy in Abkhazia is not valid, so buy insurance for abroad at Cherekhapa.
• The end of summer and the beginning of September is the best time for families with children in Abkhazia.
• Book your accommodation in advance during the high season.
• The roads in the cities are broken, which is inconvenient for a stroller, so settle closer to the sea.
• To walk along the pebble beach, buy aquashoes.
• Remember the rules of hygiene – children in resorts often become infected with rotavirus.

A child in Abkhazia will definitely be interested and happy if you follow the simple rules of hygiene and do not swallow sea water.

Money and bank cards

Abkhazia has its own currency, but everyone uses Russian rubles. The priority is cash, preferably small or for settlement, especially in transport and small shops. I read in the reviews that if there is no cash, then the sellers offer to distribute the Internet and transfer money to them, but I have not come across this.

All Russian cards work, even though they are abroad. However, they are not accepted everywhere. For example, I have never seen terminals on the market. In small shops, they prefer cash, even if there is a terminal. I paid with a card a couple of times – the payment went through successfully. They do not have PayPass terminals, you need to insert a card.

There are no Russian banks in Abkhazia. Make no mistake, Sberbank is not what it seems, and has nothing in common with ours. There are ATMs, but not as common as in Russia. Most of them are in Sukhum. You can withdraw from Tinkoff cards without commission if the amount is more than 3000 ₽. According to reviews, Sberbank has a commission of 1%.

I took both cash and bank cards on vacation in Abkhazia. I advise you to take 50/50 as well.

Mobile communication and Wi-Fi

Roaming is activated on the border with Abkhazia. If it is important for you to always be in touch, you can choose the tariff of your operator or buy a local SIM card (there is also an E-sim). The two main operators in the republic are A-mobile and Aquafon. The prices for their tariffs are almost the same. For example, at Aquafon, a SIM card costs 350 ₽, and the minimum tariff with a package of minutes within Abkhazia, SMS and the Internet is 550 ₽. If you need to call to Russia, you will have to pay separately.

We didn’t need to be constantly connected, so I decided not to buy a local SIM card. To move into a rented apartment, I activated the service of unlimited calls for a day from MTS for 170 ₽ to the border, and immediately turned it off after settling in. The rest of the time, Wi-Fi and calls through instant messengers were enough. Wi-Fi everywhere I used it was fast.

Is it safe in Abkhazia? And I was wary of resting in the republic, but in reality I felt completely safe there. Nobody encroached on the camera, and the men were not burdened with attention. But the pedestrian in Abkhazia seems to be absolutely defenseless, so be careful when crossing the road.

Car tourists often leave negative reviews about Abkhazia. Therefore, we did not go to the republic by car, but took excursions. However, we asked both guides and tourists who arrived in their own car about safety – everyone answered that there was no need to worry if you follow traffic rules and buy local insurance, and also be polite and non-confrontational.

In general, not a single tourist from our company was injured while on vacation in Abkhazia. The worst thing that happened to us was that on the embankment in Gagra a gypsy stuck up to us, and even that one was safely sent away. 🙂

We met these gypsies traveling around the country three times during our vacation. They love to tie red strings around the wrists of tourists. Ignore them, and if they persist, threaten them with the police. Drivers on the roads of Abkhazia need to be careful – every now and then there are cows, horses, sheep and even buffaloes.

Tips

To make your stay in Abkhazia memorable only good, follow these simple tips:

• Russian medical policy in Abkhazia is not valid, so buy insurance for abroad at Cherekhapa. The policy costs only 60 ₽ per day per person. Or you can get free insurance for trips around the world by issuing an All Airlines Tinkoff card.
• Check your cafe bill before paying.
• Carefully cross the road.
• Buckle up in the car. The driving style of the Abkhazians is specific, and accidents are frequent.
• Do not leave things unattended, especially on the beach and in the car. Watch your phone and keep your money in different places.
• Drink bottled or boiled water.
• Do not swallow sea water.
• Wash fruit and hands thoroughly.
• Take a tourist first aid kit, especially if you are traveling with children.
• To walk along the pebble beach, buy aquashoes.
• There are scammers and gypsies in the resorts. Do not let them dress you up in national costumes or put animals and birds on you and do not take pictures with them – they will take a lot of money for this, even if initially the amount is small.

Federal Aid Is Propping Up Child Care. It Isn’t a Long-Term Fix.

This story has been updated to clarify the possible impact of a package of child care proposals in Utah.

Federal COVID-19 relief dollars for child care providers will continue to flow through the states this year, cheered by both Republican and Democratic governors who say parents need affordable child care to get back to work. 

But child care providers and advocates warn that the federal money, which expires in 2024, won’t solve the industry’s fundamental, long-term challenge: how to provide quality services and pay workers a competitive wage while keeping prices affordable.

Federal and state aid must continue, said Karen DeVos, owner of a child care business in rural Ada, Minnesota. “We can’t just say, ‘We’re nearing the end of the pandemic,’ or, ‘OK, the pandemic is now the norm: Figure it out.’”

While some states have started to spend the $39 billion for child care authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act, others haven’t. Some governors and state lawmakers are starting to announce their plans now, from setting aside grants for startup child care businesses to offering larger grants to businesses that can use the money to give workers a bonus.

States have until 2023 to spend $24 billion in child care business grants and until 2024 to spend $15 billion in child care subsidy dollars. A wide range of providers can apply for the business grants, and spend them on rent, wages, equipment and other operating expenses.

The subsidy money builds on a longstanding state and federal partnership to help low-income families afford care at licensed facilities. The federal government is encouraging states to use the money to increase subsidies for families, payments to providers, salaries for early educators or funding for training early educators.

The relief dollars come as state policymakers of both parties are increasingly talking about the important role child care plays in the economy. Idaho Republican Gov. Brad Little, for instance, said in an October speech that about 9% fewer adults in the state are working or looking for jobs now than in 1998. 

“If we want to get the participation rate up, [day care] is something we’re going to have to address,” he said.

Some conservative lawmakers remain wary, however. Idaho’s Republican-controlled legislature last spring rejected some federal funds for early childhood education. Lawmakers said they feared the money would require educators to teach social justice concepts and encourage mothers to work outside the home. 

“My concern with any federal money is the strings that are attached to it,” Idaho Republican state Rep. Charlie Shepherd said in a recent phone interview. “If they try to implement their curriculum, or if they throw in any, ‘we must teach this’ or ‘we must teach that’—for me, that’s automatically a no-go.”

Meanwhile, advocates for child care providers and some Democrats say states and the federal government need to do much more to bolster the industry, such as by expanding subsidies for low-income families or increasing access to publicly funded preschool.

Ultimately, they say, the federal government needs to step in. “States cannot do it alone. This problem is so massive that federal intervention is needed,” said Clare Sanford, government relations chair of the Minnesota Child Care Association, an advocacy group for child care centers based in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. 

Democrats in Congress have included new child care subsidies for low- and middle-income families in their sprawling social spending bill, the Build Back Better Act. States would administer the funds and eventually contribute 10% of the child care assistance costs.

That legislation is currently stalled, however. Republicans and moderate Democrats oppose its price tag and many of its provisions. Republicans say the child care portion of the bill would increase child care costs and hurt faith-based providers. 

With future funding uncertain, child care providers worry about what will happen when federal relief dollars dry up. DeVos is currently using a federal grant provided monthly by Minnesota’s human services agency to pay her employees $300-$700 monthly bonuses. 

She can’t afford the bonuses without the grants, she said. “My fear is, when those end, what happens?”

A Massive Infusion of Federal Aid

Before the pandemic, parents already were struggling to find child care and afford licensed programs that can cost as much a year as in-state college tuition. Meanwhile, child care workers typically were earning less than $12 an hour, according to the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment at the University of California, Berkeley.  

Then COVID-19 threatened to shut down whole swaths of the industry. Public health orders forced businesses to temporarily close. Parents kept their kids home to keep them safe from the virus. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended social distancing procedures and cleaning protocols that reduced child care businesses’ revenue while increasing costs. 

Yet while some businesses have closed for good, federal aid has kept the industry afloat, policy experts say.

First, the March 2020 CARES Act set aside over $4 billion for child care programs and Head Start, a federal early childhood program for low-income families. Then a December 2020 budget bill allocated over $10 billion for the same purpose. And finally, the March 2021 American Rescue Plan Act authorized $39 billion for child care programs. 

That doesn’t include federal small-business loans and state grants—largely funded by federal aid—that some child care centers also have received. DeVos also received a federal Paycheck Protection Program loan, for instance.

“We have just very narrowly staved off widespread closures, as a result of federal relief dollars,” said Dan Wuori, senior director of early learning at the Hunt Institute, an affiliate of the Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy. “If the CARES Act had happened any later than it did, I think some of the more dire predictions would have come true.”

Minnesota advocate Sanford said that in her state, about as many child care providers closed in 2020 as in prior years. She attributes the sector’s stability to government aid, starting with emergency grants Minnesota funded soon after the pandemic began. (The state later used federal aid to cover the $30 million cost.)

DeVos is moving ahead with her pre-pandemic plan to expand to a second location, which will more than double the number of children her business serves.   

The child care industry isn’t yet back to normal. About 11% fewer people are working in child day care services now than in February 2020, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.  

Providers and advocates say recruiting and retaining workers is now their biggest challenge. They say businesses are struggling to compete with fast-food chains and big-box stores that are offering upwards of $15 an hour. 

“Our child care programs—they simply cannot hire,” said Beth Oppenheimer, executive director of the Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children, an advocacy group based in Boise. “The wait lists are long, and that doesn’t mean there’s no space. It means they can’t hire a teacher to be in a classroom that’s sitting there empty.”

Surging COVID-19 cases and quarantine rules make staffing even more difficult. DeVos said she’s hired three more people, increasing her total staff by a third, to make sure she has backup if an employee tests positive. “We need to have somebody there to fill in that spot,” she said. 

States Finalize Spending Plans

Governors of both parties have in recent months proposed new spending on child care programs.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, said she wants to allow families who earn up to 225% of the federal poverty line to access child care subsidies—up from the state’s current 200% limit—and she wants to spend $75 million to boost child care worker wages. Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis wants to spend $30 million to renovate state buildings, including higher education institutions, to add child care facilities. The facilities would be open to the public and run by private providers.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, blasted the federal Build Back Better bill in her annual budget address but touted her plans to distribute her state’s $100 million allocation of American Rescue Plan Act aid. The money will be spent to help new and existing child care businesses, help employers open facilities for employees, and fund scholarships for child care workers, she said.

Many of the recent proposals will likely be funded by American Rescue Plan Act funds—even if governors aren’t making that explicit, said Anne Hedgepeth, deputy chief of policy for Child Care Aware of America, a nonprofit that works with child care resource and referral agencies and advocates for child care policies. 

“You see relief [funds] driving it,” she said.

Some states have started distributing the federal child care funds, but others still are working on their plans for the money. 

That’s partly due to timing, Hedgepeth said. In some states, legislatures need to approve the spending and didn’t have time to do so last session.

State plans reveal a range of strategies for spending the business and child care subsidy funds. North Carolina and Connecticut are giving larger business grants to programs that use the money to increase worker base pay or benefits, for instance.  

Arkansas will use the subsidy funds to help essential workers pay for child care and to pay for scholarships for early childhood teachers. Georgia is expanding child care subsidies to families who earn up to 85% of the state’s median income, up from the state’s typical 50% threshold.

Some states are considering additional policy changes. Republican lawmakers and governors say lifting regulations could alleviate child care shortages by helping businesses grow.

A Utah legislative committee recently advanced a series of child care proposals that could allow non-licensed, home-based centers to serve more children and would prevent cities from exceeding state child care regulations.

The package also would include startup funds for child care businesses that partner with employers, funded with federal child care aid, and would allow child care businesses to take advantage of certain state economic development incentives. 

“All these things, we’re hoping, will help to increase capacity,” said Utah state Rep. Susan Pulsipher, a Republican and the bill’s sponsor. 

The South Dakota Department of Social Services will be reviewing child care licensing requirements, said Cabinet Secretary Laurie Gill. “I think our governor is interested in taking a look at the licensing requirements and making sure that they’re relevant today, and that we don’t have unnecessary red tape or hurdles.”  

Democrats and child care advocates are instead calling for larger child care subsidies that could help parents afford care and businesses offer higher wages. They’re skeptical that cutting regulations and other interventions popular with conservatives will solve the industry’s structural problems. 

“The small-government interventions—I would love to hear some that would actually have a positive impact, because we could actually get them done, maybe in Utah,” said Anna Thomas, a senior policy analyst at Voices for Utah Children, a Salt Lake City-based nonprofit that advocates for children.

“But there just haven’t been any viable solutions to this systemic problem that don’t require substantial government investment,” she said.  

Given the record-breaking surpluses many states expect this year, some Democrats say now’s the time for big spending increases. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said at a virtual panel last month that “this is the moment” to help families, according to the Star Tribune.  

Walz won’t reveal his budget until the end of January, however. Walz’s press team declined to comment further on the governor’s plans.

Maila Rajamets, head of the pre-school education department of the Ministry of Education, confirmed to ERR that a parent has the right to demand a place in a kindergarten from the municipality from the moment the child is one and a half years old. At the same time, for children under three years old, a place in a kindergarten can be replaced by a childcare service, but only with the consent of the parent.

“Currently, we are considering options on how to unify the services offered by kindergartens and childcare facilities without losing quality. In the coming days, we will meet with a working group of the ministry and plan to meet with representatives of local governments to hear their specific suggestions to help solve this problem,” she said.

According to Rajamets, a draft law on pre-school education and child care services is currently being prepared, the purpose of which is to unify the services offered by kindergartens and child care centres.

Child care centres: we are discriminated against

At the end of January, the Estonian Union of Child Care Institutions sent a letter to the Ministry expressing their dissatisfaction with the current situation. The letter noted that due to the cumulative effect of laws and regulations, child care centers are discriminated against and may soon disappear altogether, since they are not equated with kindergartens or nurseries.

“Parents refuse childcare services, demanding compensation from the local government or a place in a kindergarten. Increasingly, this is done through the courts and with a public smear campaign,” the union wrote.

Although the law interprets the childcare service as a social service, in reality, according to the union, this does not mean a reduction in educational and educational work. The union blames the municipalities for the fact that the size of the subsidy for private kindergartens decreases from year to year compared to kindergartens, and, of course, parents do not want to use the service for which they have to pay more.

“Today, there are a number of child care centers whose quality is very high, and sometimes even better than some nurseries, but from the point of view of the law, these centers cannot be considered equal service providers,” representatives of the care centers said for the children.

They also pointed out as a problem that since the kindergarten is an educational institution, income tax can be deducted from the attendance fee, which is not possible in the case of a child care center.

Child care centers fear that until the adoption of the new Law on Pre-School Education and Child Care, the childcare service may completely disappear from the educational landscape in Estonia, as the current system has created a situation in which parents compete only for a place in kindergarten without considering other options.

Millions of euros are required to create the required number of places in municipal kindergartens

Last autumn, the Harju County Municipal Association also applied to the Ministry of Education, since in a number of municipalities, including the parishes of Harku, Kiili, Rae, Saku, Saue and Viimsi, it is impossible guarantee places in municipal kindergartens for all children under the age of three.

According to the association’s assessment, in order to provide places in kindergartens in Harju County for all 2,500 children, it is necessary to build 25 six-group kindergarten buildings, but local governments do not consider such an investment to be reasonable. Therefore, in these parishes, the network of preschool institutions is formed from municipal and private kindergartens and providers of childcare services.

The Union proposed to amend the Law on Pre-School Institutions so that the rural municipality or city government can replace a place in a kindergarten for a child aged 1.5 to 3 years with a child care service, and that a service provided to all children under the age of three , was considered as a childcare service.

In a reply to the Union of Municipalities of Harju County, the Ministry referred to a plan to unify the quality of services offered by kindergartens and child care centers through the Act on Preschool Education and Day Care Centers. In this regard, according to the Ministry, it is necessary to change the Income Tax Law in such a way that a parent using the services of a child care center has the right to deduct these expenses from his income.

A parent has the right to demand a place in a kindergarten

According to the representative of the Ministry of Education, the law allows the local government to purchase a service from a private enterprise on a competitive basis instead of running a municipal kindergarten, so the practice of local governments in Harju County, where the network of preschool institutions consists of both municipal, and from private kindergartens and child care providers, is perfectly legal.

“In both cases, the local self-government unit remains an obligated entity that must provide services to the child and family under the conditions provided for in the Law on Preschool Education,” Rajamets said.

However, unlike kindergartens, which are part of the education sector, child care services, which are part of the social sector, are not required to guarantee preschool education.

“Kindergarten is an educational institution and childcare is a social service. Childcare providers are very good cooperation partners and offer a high-quality service. However, childcare cannot be equated with kindergarten services, and a parent still has the right to demand a place for their child in a kindergarten,” Rajamets said.

Regarding the appeal of the Union of Child Care Institutions, the representative of the Ministry of Education stated that the Ministry stands for quality education at all levels.

“For children for whom the local government unit cannot guarantee a place in a nursery school, private childcare fees must be reimbursed on the same basis as for municipal kindergarten costs. In addition, many local government units local governments, when a parent submits an application, compensate for reasonable expenses associated with the use of a place in a child care center, for example, they compensate for transportation costs,” said Rajamets.
