Our afterschool programs are designed to build children’s social skills and enhance their school-day learning. Children engage in developmentally appropriate project-based learning curriculum, both individually and in groups.

For ten months of the year (including early release days), all seven classrooms provide care from the end of the school-day until 5:55 p.m.  Programs are open during school vacation weeks and on snow days.   All programs have a staff-to-teacher ratio of 3 staff to 24 or 25 children.  

All afterschool programs are licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care and our staff are trained in basic inclusionary practices.

  • Afterschool programs expand learning opportunities for young people of all ages. These creative and fun spaces allow scholars the opportunity to meet new friends, explore new interests, and learn exciting things. Afterschool offers hands-on projects and team-building activities that foster resilience, confidence and healthy relationships. These programs are staffed by certified teachers and caring mentors who are trained to help young people develop important life skills like coping with stress and using their voice. Quality programs are tailored to meet each scholar’s academic, physical, and social emotional needs.

    Jackson Public School District provides afterschool programming across all feeder patterns and FOR EACH school, ensuring equitable access to high-quality out-of-school-time experiences. Set to begin October 10, each program will offer homework help, afterschool meals, academic tutoring, transportation home and a host of enrichment activities provided by our afterschool partners. These activities include, but are not limited to, sports, dance, exercise, visual arts, performing arts, STEM, college readiness, career readiness, financial literacy, test prep, ACT prep, social emotional learning, mentoring, healthy eating, music production, dramatic arts, and MUCH MORE.

    It is important that scholars who participate in these programs are committed and consistently attend their scheduled time to fully benefit from this additional opportunity for academic support and enrichment activities.

Milton Abbey is a co-educational boarding school for boys and girls in the UK, founded in 1954. The school is located in the village of Milton Abbas near the town of Blandford Forum in Dorset, southwest England. Heathrow and Gatwick International Airports can be reached within 2 hours. The distance to London is 196 km, about 3 hours on the way.

Milton Abbey is one of the most beautiful schools in the country, covering an area of ​​89hectares. The school enchants with an ancient abbey with 1000 years of history. It belongs to the Diocese of Salisbury, but the school makes full use of it.

Eat, Drink, Savor: Chef Alejandro Ceja wants to change the way you think about food trucks

Local ingredients and a flair for regional cooking highlight his approach to Mexican food.

After 10 years of cooking for other people, Chef Alejandro Ceja, the owner of Hollister’s El Guapo Kitchen, is on a mission to change how people think of Mexican food trucks, even as he works to perfect his operation.

“It is so hard to transition from restaurants to food trucks,” he said. “The main problem is storage, so I need to be creative. I’ve torn down the truck three times so far because the flow in the kitchen was not there. I did a lot of video chats with colleagues to see what they would do differently because I could not put into practice what was in my mind.”

Ceja, 30, was born and raised in Hollister and left around 10 years ago to begin his career.

“Fresh out of high school, I didn’t think there was much to do here besides commute,” Ceja said, “so I went to the University of Las Vegas to study hospitality and management. I got picked up by Hyatt Hotels in New York and worked there until the pandemic hit. I came back here, and when the opportunity came to get this food truck, I grabbed it. I was tired of working for others and decided to work for myself.”

Ceja has been experimenting with what the local customers will buy as he tries to expand to more unusual offerings. 

“I have changed my menu four times, trying to figure out what local people will eat,” he said. “When I first started, I was doing bao buns with Wagyu beef, and I had things like black garlic aioli. But a lot of people were not familiar with it and were a little afraid of it. People would look at my menu and tell me it was a little too exotic for them.”

He added, “That was a new experience for me. I was used to having to educate my cooks on the kind of ingredients I use, and so I look at it in the same way as just trying to educate my customers. Some people are willing just to try new things, and there are people who only want what is traditional.”

All of the products Ceja uses are organic and locally sourced, including free-range chicken and grass-fed beef. And he puts the same care into preparation as he has with selecting his ingredients.

“I take time to do things a little bit differently,” he said. “My chicken is roasted and hand-pulled when other people traditionally season it with saffron, so it comes out pretty and yellow. For the beef, I smoke it to break away from the usual asada. I like doing my al pastor Yucatan style, which makes the beef black instead of the traditional red.”

With most of his ingredients sourced within 20 miles of Hollister, Ceja has a lot of room to let his imagination run wild.

“I can get really fresh cabbage and convert that to kimchi, for example,” he said. “And if you have the kimchi, why not convert that into something new? Turn it into a kimchi salsa and add a Mexican flair. Since I am born here in California, to me, you always want to go against the grain and try something new.”

While his menu at his regular appearances at the Farmer’s Market has reverted to a less exotic set of offerings, Ceja is confident that he can help change the way Hollister looks at street food.

“I decided I wanted my food truck to be a mobile restaurant,” he said. “I am not a taquero, I am not the taco guy, but I can make really great tacos. For me, to be a traditional taco truck is really hard because Mexico has such a wide range of ingredients and techniques which I want to bring into my menu. But it will all depend on the clientele. I hope that Hollister is ready for this kind of great dining experience.”

 

The foods of El Guapo Kitchen

Chicken tacos –  Free-range chicken is lightly basted with a basic olive oil, garlic, thyme and parsley mixture and then roasted, which gives it a slight caramelized sweetness. The hand-pulled meat is garnished with chopped onion and cilantro and Ceja recommends adding some of his salsa verde. The chicken is moist with a full, rich flavor and the tart medium-spiciness of the tomatillo sauce binds the ingredients together, adding heat but not overpowering the more subtle flavor of the meat. 

Carne asada tacos – Made with herb-marinated local grass-fed beef, Ceja recommended the medium-hot red sauce with these tacos. “I love the red sauce because it has a little kick to it,” Ceja said. “I have tried a lot of salsas and some of them just kill your mouth. Five minutes later you still feel it and can’t really enjoy anything else. I want mine to be cooler and more mellow.”  I opted for just a squeeze of lime which added a clean bright note to the more subtle spiciness of the meat.  

Al pastor tacos – “Al pastor is my favorite and I try it everywhere I go,” Ceja said. “I recommend mixing the green and red sauces, which elevate the spices used in cooking the pork.” Ceja makes two different version of al pastor, an argentinian black recipe which he introduced when he first opened his truck, and the more easily found red version, seasoned with achiote, cinnamon, chilies, and garlic, which is what I sampled.   On Ceja’s recommendation I tried the two sauces together and found they nicely complimented the deep earthy spices of the meat.  

Salsa fries – A foray into county fair finger food, french fries are covered in a mixture of melted Queso de Oaxaca, cheddar, and Monterey Jack cheeses, sliced jalapenos, onions, salsa verde, carne asada and a sundried tomato aioli. “Balance is one thing I really try for in my dishes,” Ceja said. “With other places, you can end up with a little bit of protein and a lot of filler. I do not want to overwhelm my dishes with too much cheese or too much sauce so you can barely taste the rest of it.” This one hits all the right notes of sweet and savory, and the layers of flavor and textures just explode out of this dish. It is fun to eat and the ample amount of meat makes it a meal in itself.

This study is the first intellectual history of the solution of the “Highland problem” of Great Britain in the late 17th – first half of the 18th centuries in Russian and foreign historiography. The author focuses on the role of colonial knowledge in the appeasement and “civilization” of the Highlands. Geographers, ethnographers, political economists in the Highlands were also officials, in practice confirming the close connection between power and knowledge in the framework of the colonial and marginal policies of European powers in the spirit of the Age of Reason and Enlightenment. They combined the expansion of the imperial order, new scientific knowledge and secular ideas about humanity. The disclosure of these stories helps to understand more deeply how the British nation and the British Empire were formed, as well as the significance of the intellectual colonization of the Highlands for empire building overseas and, more broadly, the role of humanitarian knowledge in the age of Reason, Enlightenment and the first global empires. The publishing house was formed in 1992, its permanent editor-in-chief is the philologist and cultural historian Irina Dmitrievna Prokhorova. What is ptyalism?

Ptyalism is a condition where you make too much saliva. People with ptyalism might produce one to two litres of saliva daily (Freeman et al, 1994). Ptyalism is also known as hypersalivation or sialorrhea, and often affects women in the early stages of pregnancy (VanDinter, 1991, Freeman et al, 1994). Ptyalism won’t harm your baby and is not a serious condition but that doesn’t mean you can’t find it upsetting and uncomfortable.

Excessive saliva and the first trimester

Ptyalism is common during the first trimester of pregnancy. You might need to spit out some saliva into a tissue quite often, and the bitter taste of the saliva can cause nausea and vomiting. The good news for most women is that it should ease after the first trimester.

Causes of excessive saliva

As with most things in pregnancy, your hormones are to blame for excessive saliva (Freeman et al, 1994). It can also be caused by pregnancy sickness, as nausea can make women try to swallow less, especially in those with hyperemesis gravidarum (extreme morning sickness).

Other causes include heartburn, which is common in pregnancy, and irritants like smoke, toxins and some medical conditions.

Baby Drool Rash: How to Recognize, Treat, & Prevent

While baby drool can be an annoying (albeit critical) process of teething that you can’t do anything about, you can prevent drool rash. Drooling and excess saliva in general are just part of a young baby’s growth. At that age, everything is centered around their mouth. From three to six months, in particular, this can be very common in babies.

  • Drooling and saliva are responsible for many roles in your newborn.
  • It keeps your baby’s mouth moist
  • It helps wash away food or milk residue
  • It can make it easier for a baby to swallow, especially since saliva can soften food
  • Once your baby has teeth, it reduces tooth decay.
  • It also helps digestion due to the enzymes present in saliva which both change starches into sugars and neutralize stomach acid.

Sometimes, though there’s just simply too much drool. Your little one may develop a skin condition, sometimes called a teething rash as excess saliva production is associated with teething. Saliva is thought to soothe their irritated gums. New parents may also wonder how long drool rash lasts? Most babies stop having bouts of drool rash when they are in the 15-month to 18-month range.

Signs & Symptoms Of Drool Rash

Drool rash often looks like flat or slightly raised patches of reddened skin with small red bumps. These can appear on the mouth, cheeks, neck, or even chest. Sometimes the skin appears chapped as well. The patches may be moist or dry. Milder versions of drool rash may initially present as irritated skin.

Some parents wonder if drool rashes and teething rashes hurt. Well, it depends. Some babies do experience pain, if it’s not resolved quickly. And some babies are simply irritated, but not in pain.

Sometimes drool rash can look similar to other forms of dermatitis. A good way to narrow down the cause is to see if your baby has any other allergies or irritants besides drool that could be causing the problem.

What Causes Drool Rash?

Drool rash is simply caused by too much drool. When that much liquid is left lingering on the baby’s delicate and sensitive skin for an extended period of time, it’s easy for a rash to develop. But where is all this drool coming from?

Teething

Excess saliva is a very common symptom of teething. Babies may gnaw on their hands or other objects as their teeth begin to erupt. Saliva then drips down their faces, necks, and bodies where it can gather and pool.

Food Residue

If a smear of food is left on your baby’s face for too long, it can also lead to a drool rash. Sometimes food gets on their faces when they are experimenting with solids. Or your baby may not be able to keep food down if they don’t have their front teeth in yet.

Pacifiers

These are another culprit for teething rashes. As pacifiers can stay in babies’ mouths for a long time, saliva that trickles out gets trapped between the pacifier and the chin. This gives time for the drooling rash to develop.

Home Remedies

While these are the major causes, your baby may also just drool a lot. So what can you do to prevent and manage drool rashes? There are a few solutions.

Prevention Is Key

The best thing you can do is prevent drool rash in the first place.

Frequently drying your baby is a good idea. Especially after feedings. Keep a burp cloth handy (or use a receiving blanket) and make sure to wipe down your baby’s drool. Don’t focus on just the face. Make sure to check the folds of their neck and pat down the chest as well. Dab gently—remember their skin is sensitive!

You can also use a bib too to protect your baby’s chest. This can prevent chafing and the rash if your baby soaks through their shirt quickly. Change bibs as needed.

Eliminate Other Irritants

Make sure you are using baby-safe detergents, soaps, and other cleansers. When in doubt, choose the fragrance-free option. Cleaning their pacifiers or teething toys frequently also helps. You can monitor your baby to see if a particular object or product worsens the rash when present.

Clean & Apply Soothing Creams

Wash the affected areas gently twice a day. It’s going to take time for the skin to heal and you don’t want an infection to set in. Check with your physician to see if you can use an ointment like Aquafor or petroleum jelly to soothe your baby’s skin and create another barrier.

When To Call the Doctor

  • If the rash begins to crack, ooze, or weep other fluid. This could be a sign of an infection, and a physician may give you an antibiotic.

Enteroviral infections – is a group of diseases caused by several types of viruses. The disease is caused by Coxsackieviruses, polioviruses and ECHO (ECHO).

After an enterovirus infection, persistent lifelong immunity is formed, however, it is serospecific. This means that immunity is formed only to the serological type of virus that the child has had and does not protect him from other varieties of these viruses. Therefore, a child can get sick with an enterovirus infection several times in his life. Also, this feature does not allow the development of a vaccine to protect our children from this disease. The disease has a seasonality: outbreaks of the disease are most often observed in the summer-autumn period.

Causes of infection with enterovirus infection.

Infection occurs in several ways. Viruses can enter the environment from a sick child or from a child who is a carrier of the virus. Virus carriers do not have any manifestations of the disease, but the viruses are in the intestines and are excreted into the environment with feces. This condition can be observed in children who have been ill after a clinical recovery, or in children in whom the virus has entered the body, but could not cause the disease due to the strong immunity of the child. The virus carrier can persist for 5 months.

Once in the environment, viruses can persist for quite a long time, as they tolerate adverse effects well. Viruses are well preserved in water and soil; when frozen, they can survive for several years; heated to 45ºС die in 45-60 seconds).

How enterovirus infection is transmitted.

The transmission mechanism can be airborne (when sneezing and coughing with droplets of saliva from a sick child to a healthy one) and fecal-oral if personal hygiene is not followed. Most often, infection occurs through water, when drinking raw (not boiled) water. It is also possible to infect children through toys if children take them in their mouths. Most often, children aged 3 to 10 years are ill. In children who are breastfed, there is immunity in the body received from the mother through breast milk, however, this immunity is not stable and quickly disappears after the cessation of breastfeeding.

Symptoms of enterovirus infection.

Viruses enter the body through the mouth or upper respiratory tract. Once in the child’s body, the viruses migrate to the lymph nodes, where they settle and begin to multiply. The further development of the disease is associated with many factors, such as virulence (the ability of the virus to resist the protective properties of the body), tropism (the tendency to infect individual tissues and organs) of the virus, and the state of the child’s immunity.

Enteroviral infections have both similar manifestations and different ones, depending on the species and serotype. The incubation period (the period from the virus entering the child’s body until the first clinical signs appear) is the same for all enterovirus infections – from 1 to 10 days (usually 2-5 days).

The disease begins acutely – with an increase in body temperature to 38-39º C. The temperature most often lasts 3-5 days, after which it drops to normal numbers. Very often, the temperature has a wave-like course: the temperature stays for 2-3 days, after which it decreases and stays at normal levels for 2-3 days, then rises again for 1-2 days and finally returns to normal. When the temperature rises, the child feels weakness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, and vomiting may occur. With a decrease in body temperature, all these symptoms disappear, but with a repeated increase, they may return. The cervical and submandibular lymph nodes also increase, as viruses multiply in them.

Depending on which organs are most affected, there are several forms of enterovirus infection. Enteroviruses can affect: the central and peripheral nervous systems, oropharyngeal mucosa, eye mucosa, skin, muscles, heart, intestinal mucosa, liver; in boys, testicular damage is possible.

When the mucous membrane of the oropharynx is affected, enterovirus angina develops. It is manifested by an increase in body temperature, general intoxication (weakness, headache, drowsiness) and the presence of a vesicular rash in the form of bubbles filled with liquid on the mucous membrane of the oropharynx and tonsils. These bubbles burst, in their place ulcers are formed, filled with white bloom. After recovery, no traces remain at the site of the sores.

When the eyes are affected, conjunctivitis develops. It can be one- or two-sided. It manifests itself in the form of photophobia, lacrimation, redness and swelling of the eyes. There may be hemorrhages in the conjunctiva of the eye.

With muscle damage, myositis develops – muscle pain. Pain appears on the background of an increase in temperature. Soreness is observed in the chest, arms and legs. The appearance of pain in the muscles, as well as temperature, can be undulating. When the body temperature decreases, the pain decreases or disappears completely.

With damage to the intestinal mucosa (enteritis), there is a liquid stool. Stools of normal color (yellow or brown), liquid, without pathological (mucus, blood) impurities. The appearance of loose stools can be both against the background of an increase in temperature, and isolated (without an increase in body temperature).

Enteroviral infections can affect various parts of the heart. So, if the muscle layer is damaged, myocarditis develops, if the inner layer is damaged with capture of the heart valves, endocarditis develops, if the outer shell of the heart is damaged, pericarditis develops. The child may experience: increased fatigue, weakness, palpitations, drop in blood pressure, rhythm disturbances (blockade, extrasystoles), pain behind the sternum.

With damage to the nervous system, encephalitis, meningitis can develop. The child has: severe headache, nausea, vomiting, fever, convulsions, paresis and paralysis, loss of consciousness.

With liver damage, acute hepatitis develops. It is characterized by an increase in the liver, a feeling of heaviness in the right hypochondrium, pain in this place. Perhaps the appearance of nausea, heartburn, weakness, fever.

When the skin is damaged, exanthema may appear – hyperemia (red coloration) of the skin, most often on the upper half of the body (head, chest, arms), does not rise above the level of the skin, appears simultaneously.

Boys may have inflammation in the testicles with the development of morchitis. Most often, this condition develops 2-3 weeks after the onset of the disease with other manifestations (tonsillitis, loose stools, and others). The disease passes quite quickly and does not bear any consequences, however, in rare cases, the development of aspermia (lack of sperm) in adulthood is possible.

There are also congenital forms of enterovirus infection, when viruses enter the child’s body through the placenta from the mother. Usually, this condition has a benign course and is cured on its own, however, in some cases, an enterovirus infection can cause an abortion (miscarriage) and the development of a sudden death syndrome in a child (the death of a child occurs against the background of complete health).

Very rarely, damage to the kidneys, pancreas, lungs is possible. The defeat of various organs and systems can be observed both isolated and combined.

Treatment of enterovirus infection

There is no specific treatment for enterovirus infection. Treatment is carried out at home, hospitalization is indicated in the presence of damage to the nervous system, heart, high temperature, which cannot be reduced for a long time when using antipyretics. The child is shown bed rest for the entire period of fever.

Meals should be light, rich in proteins. A sufficient amount of liquid is needed: boiled water, mineral water without gases, compotes, juices, fruit drinks.

Treatment is carried out symptomatically, depending on the manifestations of the infection – tonsillitis, conjunctivitis, myositis, loose stools, heart damage, encephalitis, meningitis, hepatitis, exanthema, orchitis. In some cases (tonsillitis, diarrhea, conjunctivitis …) bacterial complications are prevented.

Children are isolated for the entire period of the disease. In the children’s team may be after the disappearance of all symptoms of the disease.

Prevention of enterovirus infection.

“Saliva is produced by the salivary glands, among which are sublingual, parotid and submandibular. The excretory ducts of all salivary glands are located in the oral cavity. Causes of the phenomenon

In addition, excessive salivation occurs when certain peripheral nerves that innervate the salivary glands or their branches are damaged. Saliva can be secreted in excess and with helminthic invasion, ”notes otorhinolaryngologist Kulikova.

It happens that the amount of saliva is normal, but swallowing is disturbed. In this case, experts talk about false hypersalivation. “This situation may arise due to a violation of the innervation of the muscles involved in the act of swallowing, or their primary lesion,” the specialist notes.

What to do?

    I would like to post a personal response regarding the previous review (A. Ward). I am the Assistant Director of Kids ‘R’ Kids of Franz Road and mother of two girls who attend the facility. Normally, I would not feel the need to comment as a parent or employee. But the assumption made by the previous poster comes as a complete shock to me and I feel a comment from myself is necessary– as I can not sit aside and watch the name of such a caring person be tarnished.

    I am a woman of color (African American) and was hired by Meredith in 2012. She and I have worked side by side (we literally share an office) and in all of my 6 years employeed at Kids ‘R’ Kids, I honestly have never witnessed anything to assume any prejudices from her and it saddens me that someone might feel that way. She has dedicated herself to our school and children since the school first opened its doors. She is fair with all employees and children alike and gives many opportunities for her employees to grow no matter their ethnicity or culture. She does not see color, just people (my own children call her “Auntie M”).

    Our school strives to break boundaries and come together as a united community. We teach our children about cultural differences so they can grow and acknowledge them– thus making the next generations more united than past ones have been. Our children 2 and up also get a chance to enjoy a Multicultural class once a week (a program implemented by our Director, Meredith).

    Please inquire about programs and the people involved before making such strong accusations. Let’s continue moving forward and coming together as a society. I do wish you luck in your job search.

    I am seeing the negative reviews on google and I have to chime in. Both my children have attended Kids R Kids on Franz Road and have loved every minute! They have had amazing teachers who really take the time to love and educate my children. Every time I walk in the door I am greeting by the front desk who is always smiling and makes me and my children feel welcome. Any issues I have, if you want to call them that, are handled promptly by the Director and Assistant Director and always to my satisfaction. My children have learned so much and are always coming home with funny stories and they can’t wait to go to Kids R Kids the next day. I am blown away with what they know and I am FULLY confident that my children will be so far ahead of the game in public school. I know that no school is perfect and will make mistakes, but this school goes above and beyond to make the parents and children happy and I am happy with this school. My children will continue to attend Kids R Kids of Franz Road no matter what any review says. Thank you so much!!

In 1989 we wrote the book Gifted Children at Home and at school”, which was published in Germany on 1993, and subsequently translated into 12 languages ​​and is still being supplemented and reprinted. Clearly, it’s time for a brand new book for parents and teachers. This book is now in your hands.

In 1989, very little attention was paid to the upbringing and education of gifted children, both in the media and at school and at home. The term “gifted child” was not yet known. At that time, it was believed that all people are strictly divided into two categories: ordinary people and geniuses. A child of genius, or “wunderkind”, was considered a unique specimen, a photograph of such a child standing at the blackboard with a pointer in his hand was in all the newspapers. We read with curiosity about the youngest student at a university in a distant country: “He is only eight years old, and he already speaks Latin!” At that time, they did not yet know that a gifted child can look just like an ordinary child, experience the most ordinary childhood emotions and have the most ordinary childhood desires and needs. It turned out that a gifted child is in many ways an ordinary child. At present, since about 2000, the term “gifted child” has completely entered our vocabulary, but prejudices about giftedness have not yet completely disappeared. For example, there is an opinion that many parents want their child to be gifted. In reality, this fact has not yet been confirmed. Most parents do not ask this question at all. If in the family in which the child grows up it is considered normal to ask questions, read books and study independently, then the child’s giftedness often goes unnoticed. Parents consider their child the most ordinary. (The fact that every child is unique in his own way has nothing to do with his ability to learn.) He differs from other children only in elementary school. Sometimes the differences are so great that it becomes necessary for parents to meet with teachers, and this often causes anxiety among parents. Parents need to develop a realistic action plan with teachers so that the child actually learns something new in school. Each elementary school has approximately ten percent of gifted and highly gifted children. There is no need to write articles about them in the newspaper.

There is also an opposite opinion, according to which parents, on the contrary, are not at all happy if they have a gifted child: “God forbid! Better not. How terrible it is to have a gifted child! Hidden behind this judgment is the belief that gifted children are “always very problematic,” “often autistic,” “emotionally retarded,” or just downright nasty smarties. But all this is also nonsense. Primary school still often lacks teaching materials for gifted children, and differentiated education begins, at least in Holland, only at the age of twelve. All this feeds the existing prejudices that “giftedness is just a way to attract attention.”

Books with titles like Test Yourself! Are you gifted?” show that a game is often arranged from a serious and difficult task of determining giftedness. Many people take this at face value, often due to the fact that in such books they find phrases like: “People with an IQ of 130 or higher are considered gifted. ” Contrary to popular belief, the intelligence test does not show giftedness. Not only cognitive, but also personal and environmental factors play a role in the diagnosis of giftedness. In addition, the recognition of giftedness is not necessary in order to flatter someone. Recognition of giftedness is necessary so that thousands of young children are involved in the educational process at school and that they are given the opportunity to satisfy their cognitive needs, so that they are not ignored, because “they already know everything”, and are not forced to help other children, because they want to learn.

Thank God, nowadays people are more accustomed to the term “gifted” and do not treat gifted people as eccentrics who can only do great mental arithmetic.

There is also the danger that it will become fashionable to be gifted. Some of the proposed methods of working with gifted children have neither a theoretical nor an empirical basis. Children and their parents who need real help are being misled.

Through our book, we hope to give parents and teachers a basic understanding of what giftedness is and how to deal with gifted children at home and at school, trying to build a harmonious relationship between these two areas of life. Knowledge and understanding of giftedness is very important, but it is useless if not put into practice. Previously, the teacher faced an almost impossible task to independently come up with a training program for a highly gifted student. Schools and teachers are currently receiving the necessary assistance. There is training material and refresher courses. Every elementary school should send one of their teachers to such courses in order to have a gifted worker on their team.

In our book, we describe major new developments in the field of giftedness and hope to support parents and teachers in their concern for the upbringing and education of gifted children.

Chapter 1

Really gifted?

The world is eight years old. She had a great time last year. The teacher, originally from Curaçao, told such interesting stories, taught the class a Christmas carol in Papiamento, taught with inspiration and came up with some original task every time. Compared to last year, this school year with the new teacher, Mrs. Zwart, looks somehow faded. Of course, she also loves her work and does it with pleasure, but none of her assignments was original or new and did not inspire her students. All her creativity comes down to cross stitching and coloring pictures. Mira cannot keep her attention on her assignments and spends almost the whole day in her dreams. She is still too young to care how she looks from the outside as she slides down her chair and stares out the window, wide-eyed and half-open-mouthed.

“She’s so prostrated all the time,” Mrs. Zwart says to Mira’s stunned mother, who is called into the school to talk about her daughter’s progress. “It seems to me that she has a slight mental retardation … You should examine her with a psychologist. ” An obedient mother takes Mira to a psychologist for a comprehensive examination. “Congratulations,” the psychologist says happily. – Your daughter is very gifted, in principle in everything, but her penchant for art is especially pronounced. Unusual girl.”

With these results, Mira’s mother goes back to the teacher. “Ah … to art! – she answers. “My husband also had a penchant for art, but I quickly weaned him from this!”

Fortunately, this kind of reaction is not common in a typical elementary school. Mira ceased to be attentive in the lessons, because they became uninteresting to her. She is able to understand and understands a lot, much more than what is expected of her in the third grade. She is not lazy, not stupid, and certainly not “mentally retarded”, on the contrary, she is a very smart girl, and she instantly comes to life if she is offered a really interesting task.

For the sake of children like Mira, it is necessary to constantly draw the attention of teachers to the fact that the educational process should take into account different levels of abilities, and this applies not only to lagging behind, but also to gifted children (who are actually no less) for whom lessons are being taught too slow, and their content is not of great interest. This must be done until it is clearly stated in the school system that differentiated education is necessary already in primary, and not only in high school, as is customary, for example, in the Netherlands, where high school students are divided by ability. This is necessary not only for the development of children, but also for the development of society, which will only benefit from the emergence of a large number of talented people.

Characteristic of Mira’s situation is that her parents considered their daughter to be completely ordinary and that at school she was perceived as more behind the curve than smart. In general, neither parents nor teachers considered it necessary to ask how the child’s desire for knowledge was satisfied. At home, Mira’s problems were not so noticeable, because there was something to do, although her parents did not make much effort to organize her leisure. Mira had an older sister, and there were musical instruments, books, and drawing kits in the house. Her parents sometimes told fascinating stories and took her questions seriously. She was never bored at home.

In order to determine the cognitive needs of smart children in time (even before they have lost all interest in school, stopped making any efforts and found themselves in social isolation), it is necessary to understand what giftedness is and how to behave with gifted children at home and at school, without overloading them, but without neglecting their interests.

What is giftedness?

Not everyone understands the word “gifted” in the same way. If you ask your friends, you will hear many different definitions. But scientists still continue to search for the best definition of this term. All scholars, however, agree that giftedness cannot simply be defined as “high intelligence.”

However, if you ask a teacher to describe a gifted student to you, in most cases he will first of all name a child with good intelligence and high achievements. Of course, both success and intelligence are present in all the main scientific models of giftedness, which we will discuss below, but they are only part of many other components of this concept. In addition, scientific models differ in what aspect of giftedness they emphasize. According to some models, the central component of giftedness is innate abilities, while others consider interaction with the environment to be the key link, or they rely on something else. But if intelligence is not the single most important component of giftedness, then what is giftedness?

In order to explain the results of their research to a wide audience in an accessible way, scientists use models: a short and visual description of psychological reality. There are a huge number of different psychological models, including those for giftedness. Below we describe a few of them. It immediately becomes clear that each scientist has his own vision of the phenomenon of giftedness, and in order to get a clear idea, it is important to consider different points of view. This “own vision” of giftedness is not to be confused with the conventional wisdom: the model is the product of a series of scientific studies. In our book, we show that over time, the idea of ​​what giftedness has constantly changed and continues to change until now. Scientists learn from each other, and each subsequent study builds on the previous one, so it should not seem strange that scientists return to the same fact or phenomenon again and again. Previous research has given us some knowledge that helps us better understand what to pay special attention to. Thus, slowly but surely, we are getting closer to the truth.

A. Models of giftedness as abilities

Models that consider abilities as the basis of giftedness (see: Hany, 1987) proceed from the fact that if high intellectual abilities are clearly manifested already at a very early age, then they will persist throughout life . The most famous representative of this trend is the American scientist Lewis M. Terman (1877–1956). Terman is considered a pioneer of longitudinal research on gifted people. For thirty years he observed the development of a group of gifted children. Thirty years later, he was still convinced that if a child had an IQ greater than 135, then he would remain that high throughout his life. But at 19In 1954, two years before his death, he found to his dismay that his main assumption was wrong. Incorrect was not only his hypothesis that IQ remains high throughout life, but also the conclusion that a high IQ is a guarantee of success in life. Many of the brilliant people that he observed did not achieve anything special in their lives, both professional and personal. It turned out that high intelligence in itself does not guarantee the achievement of any particular success. Energy and perseverance, as well as a positive and supportive environment, turned out to be necessary additional conditions. If these factors were absent, then at an older age, the presence of a high IQ was almost imperceptible. The abilities were still there, but the individual was not able to manifest them.

The US Department of Education also used the ability model of giftedness, which was based on a broad definition of giftedness. Most US states have adopted this model and made it the basis of their educational programs [1] . According to the definition adopted for this model, in addition to intellectual giftedness, there are other forms of it.

“Gifted children have either existing or potential skills that are a manifestation of high intellectual abilities, creative abilities, abilities in the arts (musical or artistic) or academic abilities, or have outstanding leadership qualities. In this regard, they need help and activities that are not part of the regular school curriculum.”

The most remarkable thing in this definition is the last phrase: “In this regard, they need help and activities that are not part of the regular school curriculum. ” This is important to keep in mind if you want to meet the needs of gifted children in practice. However, this broad definition is not entirely accurate given what we currently know about giftedness. This definition does not represent non-cognitive factors at all, while we already know how important and even necessary motivation is for achieving special success. From the definition, it is again not clear to what extent this or that ability should be expressed in order to state that you have a gifted child in front of you. Nothing is said about the role of family, school and friends either. Initially, in this definition, which was formulated in 1972, “psychomotor giftedness” was also mentioned, but since 1978 it has been included in the general term “artistic ability”. At this point, we would consider this logic strange. Thus, we have, so to speak, already outgrown this model.

B. Cognitive models

These models focus on qualitative differences in the process of information processing. What ways of processing information distinguish gifted children from ordinary ones? What matters here is not the end results, but the way they are achieved. Some representatives of this trend suggest replacing the term IQ (intelligence quotient) with QI (quality of information processing). Research conducted from this perspective can open up important data, such as early indicators of giftedness. So, for example, in conversations with parents, one can often hear that their gifted child demonstrated independence and productivity of thinking from an early age. A good example is the girl Anya (two years old), who said to her mother when she woke her up in the morning: “Mom, when you sleep, you don’t know that you are sleeping.” This form of metacognition is often inaccessible to even older children: Anya is able to think about the very fact that she is thinking.

C. Success Models

Key terms in these models are “potential” and “realized potential” or “success”. Potential is necessary for success – in order to create something, you need to have certain abilities for this. Not all children get the chance to develop their potential. The main obstacle here is often adults who do not notice the giftedness of the child. It is known from the literature that about half of all gifted children do not receive adequate opportunities to develop their abilities, because they either simply go unnoticed or are deliberately ignored.

The advantage of performance-based models is not only that they focus on actual performance, but also that they indicate which external factors hinder or facilitate the realization of giftedness. In addition, these models not only describe the conditions for the realization of giftedness, but also set a specific goal: to show that everyone should have the opportunity to develop in accordance with their abilities. In the sixth chapter of this book, we talk about gifted children who do not reach their real level, it becomes clear that if gifted children are not given a chance to prove themselves, then they develop a negative self-image. This negative self-image, in turn, leads to new problems, and therefore it is important to prevent it in time.

Binding – liaison | French language learning

Coupling is a phonetic phenomenon that occurs between two words within a rhythmic group. The first word ends with an unpronounceable consonant, the second begins with a vowel or a mute h. In this case, the two words are merged and read as one, with the final consonant of the first word pronounced.

When linked, the ending letters

  • s and x are read as [z] : trois enfants [trwazɑ̃fɑ̃];
  • d as [t] : un grand enfant [œ̃grɑ̃tɑ̃fɑ̃];
  • f like [v], but only in two expressions: neuf heures [nœvœ:r], neuf ans [nœvɑ̃];
  • g used to be read as [k] , but now this rule is not observed and is considered obsolete, i. e. g is read as [g] .
  • Final n has a mandatory linkage in words on, mon, ton, son , en . When linking, a nasal vowel and a clear sound [n] are pronounced: mon ami [mɔ̃nami]
  • The letter p is connected only at the end of the words beaucoup and trop: trop heureux [tropørø].

Question

Help please!

I have a son who is 16 months old. He likes to gag himself. He uses all 4 fingers and sticks them down his throat and has actually vomited on a few occasions. Mostly just gags though.

He mainly does this for attention to get out of where he is confined. (Either his highchair or playpen, etc.)

I have very firmly said no, bad boy, smacked his hand and nothing works. He will continue to do it until he gets his way.

I am a stay-at-home mom and he is with me 24/7 and is still going through some separation anxiety but he usually only does this while confined. I HAVE to confine him to get normal everyday things done for short periods because he climbs on everything, tries to get into everything which has caused a lot of problems. I have to move furniture around and actually get rid of my loveseat to make room so he will stop! He will get into the cords to everything, climb on top of the sofa and stand on the arm, etc. My living room is so barricaded it is not even funny.

Any advice you can give would greatly be appreciated!

Sounds like you’ve got a wonderfully active little guy there. 16 month olds often LOVE to climb, and of course they get into everything. Unfortunately, their lack of judgment does mean they need constant supervision. That’s just part of parenting a 16 month old.

Your son is not only active but also inventive; most kids don’t gag
themselves, even as a protest. I wonder if you can expect
protest-fasting when you won’t let him use the car when he’s 16?

Seriously, though, your son is trying to tell you something and you’re not listening. So he is making sure you listen by upping the ante. You
sound like you just want his behavior to stop, and that’s completely
reasonable. But the way to get it to stop is not punishing him, it’s
listening to him and taking the need he is expressing seriously.
Toddlers NEED to explore and move. He’s outgrown the playpen.

You’ll be happy to know that this stage doesn’t last forever. Soon he will lose interest in climbing and sticking the fork in the light socket, and become passionate about other things, like chasing the cat. In the meantime, it would be good to do even more baby-proofing, so confinement can be minimized or eliminated. It’s actually GOOD for kids to move freely around the house and explore (i.e., “get into”) everything; it encourages their intellectual curiosity. Some experts think that free exploration raises the IQ.

The trick is to move anything breakable into high places that are out of sight, move linens, tupper-ware, pots and pans and other unbreakables into low drawers and shelves. Pack up every breakable you can do without and store it away for a year. If you can’t move something dangerous (like cleansers under the kitchen sink), install a baby-proof lock. Bundle up electric cords into tough, flexible plastic tubing and duct tape it down to the floor. Earthquake-tether all furniture so it doesn’t move when climbed on, babygate the stairs, put the garbage under the sink and babylock it, put corner protectors on every sharp corner. Anything that can’t hurt him and that he can’t break, don’t worry about. He may make a mess pulling books out of the shelves and pans out of the cupboards, but it’s actually great for his brain development and it won’t last for long.

You’re right to be concerned about the gagging behavior, which could easily escalate. Once little ones discover gagging and vomiting, they often use it in other situations, such as when they don’t want to be put to bed or when they tantrum. It can become a bad habit that is hard to break, so you really need to do whatever is necessary to prevent him from getting into this habit. That means, preferably, not creating the conditions ever again which will encourage this behavior (i.e., confining him.) Otherwise, you are reinforcing this habit by stimulating him to repeat it, and you could be cleaning up vomit every day for years.

Unfortunately, there is no direct way to stop a child from gagging or anything else he wants to do with his own body. Hitting him, even on his hand, and calling him a Bad Boy will not change his behavior — in this or in anything else — but it will definitely undermine your relationship and make him more difficult to manage as he gets older. Some moms put vinegar or peppermint oil on the child’s hands to stop them from gagging themselves, but I advise against that. Why? Because you will have to do it all the time, many times a day, for months. Because it will get into your child’s eyes as he rubs them, and it really, really hurts. Because kids need to be able to put things into their mouths as part of exploring their world, and you will stop that process. But most important, because your child is telling you something. If you ignore it, either he will find a more upsetting way to tell you, or he will give up and turn his feelings inward. It is hard to say which would be worse.

Since we can’t stop the gagging directly, I’m afraid you need to reconsider the confinement, which he is clearly reacting against. He may hate the playpen because he finds it confining, and it is certainly true that most kids, once they begin walking, refuse to be confined. He may simply be bored. 1. Try to make the playpen continue to work for you by shortening his playpen confinement to the least possible amount of time — no more than once a day for 10 minutes. Put in fabulous toys that he can’t play with any other time (use a couple at a time and keep recycling them so they hold his interest). Put music he loves on when he’s in the playpen– if possible, a kid’s cd or tape player that he can operate. But if he gags there again, even once, give up on the playpen. It really isn’t worth it. And it wouldn’t have worked for much longer anyway, since he will be climbing out of it soon!

2. Ditch the playpen. When he’s awake, just take him everywhere with you, even into the tub when you take a bath. In each room where you spend time (bathroom, kitchen,laundry), temporarily create a little play space — a low shelf or drawer with books and toys, or a basket containing a mat to sit on and some toys. When he opens a drawer and starts throwing your clothes on the floor, redirect him to “his” drawer in your dresser, that has his own toys/books in it. If you have to “confine” him for a moment while you take something hot out of the oven, put him in his high chair. (Keep something he loves nearby to hand him while he’s in the highchair.) But don’t leave him confined in the high chair for more than a minute unless he’s eating.

3. Keep your little terror busy “helping” you — give him a child sized broom in the living room, let him wash the tub with a (clean) wet sponge, let him cut up a banana with a plastic knife, or help you match the socks. Save any tasks that you really can’t do with him for when he’s asleep. I guarantee you that involving him in all your activities will not only keep him too busy to get into trouble, but will boost his IQ and build a closer bond between you.

4. When you must do something that will distract you from your son and you don’t think you can keep him safe, put him in a backpack. This is what I did when my son was this age, and he loved it because he got to watch everything from a high level.

5. Baby-proof his room thoroughly (which you have probably done anyway) and confine him there, with a babygate for very short time periods only. Be aware, though, that his won’t work if he is expressing separation anxiety, because he will just vomit there.

6. Instead of a playpen, use the space for something he can climb on that will keep him busy and engaged, so he doesn’t climb on things that are dangerous. If you have room, indoor play equipment such as a plastic climber would be perfect. You can find soft play climbers online that are made up of various pieces that fit together, so it can be dismantled and put away when you aren’t using it.

I realize that ditching the playpen is not what you were hoping I would say. However, you really don’t want him to start gagging himself to the point of vomiting all the time. I know of kids who did this for years; it is a hard habit to break and bad for their health, not to mention unbearable for the parents. Hopefully, your son’s gagging will vanish along with the playpen. If it doesn’t, it means he has now adopted this protest behavior and, unfortunately, your problem has gotten bigger. Why babies gag themselves, and what to do if your baby’s gagging on food

It’s normal for babies to gag. They may gag when they’re first getting used to eating, taste something they don’t like, or have too much to eat. Gagging is different from choking: Gagging resolves on its own, but a choking baby needs help. You can tell a baby is choking if they’re unable to cry, talk, or cough. If your newborn is gagging, try slowing the flow of milk by changing nursing positions or changing the bottle nipple. If your baby gags on food, they may not be ready for solids yet – or you may need to keep trying.

We all have a gag reflex – it’s a lifelong automatic response that helps prevent choking.

Gagging is normal for babies as they learn to eat solids, whether they’re spoon-fed or you’re doing baby-led weaning. Gagging brings food forward into your baby’s mouth to help them learn how to chew.

Until your baby’s around 6 months old, they also have a reflex that causes them to thrust their tongue forward whenever the back of their throat is stimulated. This tongue-thrust reflex can make early solid feedings a bit of a challenge, so it’s best to wait until the reflex is gone to try solid feeding. Still, gagging on or pushing out those first spoonfuls of pureed food isn’t uncommon.

And until they get the rhythm of sucking, some infants will gag while breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, especially if it’s flowing too quickly for them.

The difference between gagging and choking

Gagging is different from choking. Choking means your child’s airway is partially or completely blocked, which prevents breathing. Here’s how to recognize the difference between gagging and choking:

A child who’s gagging may push their tongue forward or out of their mouth and do a retching movement to try to bring food forward. Their eyes may water. They may cough or even vomit. Let your child continue to gag and cough – it means their airway isn’t completely blocked.

Coughing can usually effectively clear their airway. Don’t pat them on the back or reach into their mouth to try to grab the object. Doing either can cause whatever they’re gagging on to go farther down their airway. It’s best to calmly stay with them and make sure they completely recover.

A child who’s choking is unable to talk, cry, or cough because their airway is blocked. They may gasp or wheeze, make odd noises, or make no sound at all while opening their mouth. They may grab at their throat or appear panicked. A choking child might turn blue because they aren’t getting oxygen. They may need first aid for choking – back blows and chest thrusts (or, for children over age 1, abdominal thrusts) – to dislodge the blockage.

Newborn gagging

Newborns might have their gag reflex stimulated if the breast milk or formula they’re fed comes out too quickly, especially when they’re first getting used to eating.

Try to get your baby to relax during feedings and don’t push them to eat more than they want.

If you’re breastfeeding, the flow of milk coming out (the “letdown”) can be strong – especially in the early weeks – and cause your baby to gag. Try nursing your baby with them in more of an upright position, so they aren’t lying down. This might help slow the flow as it enters their mouth. You can also try nursing in a side-lying position (with both of you lying on your sides) to slow the milk flow as well.

If you create a lot of milk, or it’s been a little longer than usual since you last nursed your baby and your breasts feel engorged, you can try pumping or hand-expressing milk for just a few minutes to get past the initial forceful letdown before nursing your baby. Then, the milk flow will be a little slower.

If your baby is bottle-fed, make sure the nipple is the right size. Nipples with faster flow have more holes, and can allow too much breast milk or formula to come out at once, causing babies to gag.

What if your baby’s gagging on food?

It’s scary when your baby gags on food, but it’s part of the normal process of learning to eat. Try not to worry when it happens, as hard as that might be.

From birth to around 7 to 9 months, the gag reflex is actually triggered closer to the front of the mouth. Because of this, gagging might be more common when first starting solids and lessen once your baby gets older (around 9 to 12 months), when the gag reflex moves more to the back of the mouth.

If you’re starting to introduce solid foods and your baby gags, here’s what you can do. 

Make sure your baby is ready for solid food before you introduce it. This usually happens around 6 months old, once your baby is able to sit upright, has good head control, grasps, turns away when full, and shows an interest in food, leaning forward and opening their mouth when food comes near.

When you think your baby’s ready, start by putting a small amount of food on a spoon. Tip the spoon to get a bit of the food on the front of their tongue, rather than putting the whole spoonful in their mouth, which may trigger the gag reflex.

If your baby pushes the food out with their tongue, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t like it – they’re probably just trying to figure out this new way of eating. Feed them slowly while they get the hang of it.

After a few tries, they’ll start using their tongue to move the food to the back of their mouth. If your baby is still pushing food out of their mouth or having trouble swallowing food after a week of trying, they may not be ready for solids yet.

If you’re introducing your baby to solid food through baby-led weaning, gagging is also a normal part of the process. Your baby’s learning to feed themself, and that’s naturally going to come with some bumps along the way. Let your baby work out the gagging on their own, but keep an eye on them to make sure they’re not choking.

To help keep your baby from gagging on finger foods, feed them soft, easy-to-swallow food that’s cut into bite-size pieces once they develop the pincer grasp, at around 8 or 9 months old. If you’re doing baby-led weaning, you’ll give them large pieces of soft foods to grab and gnaw on. These foods should pass the squish test – they should squish easily between your thumb and forefinger or between your tongue and the roof of your mouth – so they’re easy for your baby to eat.

Don’t give them foods that are choking hazards, like whole grapes, hot dogs, nuts, raw vegetables, large chunks of meat or cheese, popcorn, or other cylindrical foods that can block the airway (like pieces of sausage or hot dog).

If your baby gags because they don’t like the texture of solid food, try giving them different types of food – and remember that it’s normal to have to give a baby a new food many times before they’ll accept it.

If your baby turns away or cries, they’re done eating. Resist the urge to push extra food on them or make them eat more once they’re done.

Your baby will most likely gag less as they get more meals under their belt and as they get older, though some kids do have an overactive gag reflex. If your baby is still gagging about a month after starting solids, mention it to their doctor. Your baby’s doctor can give you input and check for problems, or may even suggest seeing a specialist, just to be sure.
