Activities to Encourage Speech and Language Development

By: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association offers these age-appropriate ways that parents can engage their young children to help develop speech and language abilities.

Birth to 2 Years

  • Encourage your baby to make vowel-like and consonant-vowel sounds such as “ma,” “da,” and “ba.”
  • Reinforce attempts by maintaining eye contact, responding with speech, and imitating vocalizations using different patterns and emphasis. For example, raise the pitch of your voice to indicate a question.
  • Imitate your baby’s laughter and facial expressions.
  • Teach your baby to imitate your actions, including clapping you hands, throwing kisses, and playing finger games such as pat-a-cake, peek-a-boo, and the itsy-bitsy-spider.
  • Talk as you bathe, feed, and dress your baby. Talk about what you are doing, where you are going, what you will do when you arrive, and who and what you will see.
  • Identify colors.
  • Count items.
  • Use gestures such as waving goodbye to help convey meaning.
  • Introduce animal sounds to associate a sound with a specific meaning: “The doggie says woof-woof.”
  • Acknowledge the attempt to communicate.
  • Expand on single words your baby uses: “Here is Mama. Mama loves you. Where is baby? Here is baby.”
  • Read to your child. Sometimes “reading” is simply describing the pictures in a book without following the written words. Choose books that are sturdy and have large colorful pictures that are not too detailed. Ask your child, “What’s this?” and encourage naming and pointing to familiar objects in the book.

2 to 4 Years

  • Use good speech that is clear and simple for your child to model.
  • Repeat what your child says indicating that you understand. Build and expand on what was said. “Want juice? I have juice. I have apple juice. Do you want apple juice?”
  • Use baby talk only if needed to convey the message and when accompanied by the adult word. “It is time for din-din. We will have dinner now.”
  • Make a scrapbook of favorite or familiar things by cutting out pictures. Group them into categories, such as things to ride on, things to eat, things for dessert, fruits, things to play with. Create silly pictures by mixing and matching pictures. Glue a picture of a dog behind the wheel of a car. Talk about what is wrong with the picture and ways to “fix” it. Count items pictured in the book.
  • Help your child understand and ask questions. Play the yes-no game. Ask questions such as “Are you a boy?” “Are you Marty?” “Can a pig fly?” Encourage your child to make up questions and try to fool you.
  • Ask questions that require a choice. “Do you want an apple or an orange?” “Do you want to wear your red or blue shirt?”
  • Expand vocabulary. Name body parts, and identify what you do with them. “This is my nose. I can smell flowers, brownies, popcorn, and soap.”
  • Sing simple songs and recite nursery rhymes to show the rhythm and pattern of speech.
  • Place familiar objects in a container. Have your child remove the object and tell you what it is called and how to use it. “This is my ball. I bounce it. I play with it.”
  • Use photographs of familiar people and places, and retell what happened or make up a new story.

4 to 6 Years

  • When your child starts a conversation, give your full attention whenever possible.
  • Make sure that you have your child’s attention before you speak.
  • Acknowledge, encourage, and praise all attempts to speak. Show that you understand the word or phrase by fulfilling the request, if appropriate.
  • Pause after speaking. This gives your child a chance to continue the conversation.Continue to build vocabulary. Introduce a new word and offer its definition, or use it in a context that is easily understood. This may be done in an exaggerated, humorous manner. “I think I will drive the vehicle to the store. I am too tired to walk.”
  • Talk about spatial relationships (first, middle, and last; right and left) and opposites (up and down; on and off).
  • Offer a description or clues, and have your child identify what you are describing: “We use it to sweep the floor” (a broom). “It is cold, sweet, and good for dessert. I like strawberry” (ice cream).
  • Work on forming and explaining categories. Identify the thing that does not belong in a group of similar objects: “A shoe does not belong with an apple and an orange because you can’t eat it; it is not round; it is not a fruit.”Help your child follow two- and three-step directions: “Go to your room, and bring me your book.”
  • Encourage your child to give directions. Follow his or her directions as he or she explains how to build a tower of blocks.
  • Play games with your child such as “house.” Exchange roles in the family, with your pretending to be the child. Talk about the different rooms and furnishings in the house.
  • The television also can serve as a valuable tool. Talk about what the child is watching. Have him or her guess what might happen next. Talk about the characters. Are they happy or sad? Ask your child to tell you what has happened in the story. Act out a scene together, and make up a different ending.
  • Take advantage of daily activities. For example, while in the kitchen, encourage your child to name the utensils needed. Discuss the foods on the menu, their color, texture, and taste. Where does the food come from? Which foods do you like? Which do you dislike? Who will clean up? Emphasize the use of prepositions by asking him or her to put the napkin on the table, in your lap, or under the spoon. Identify who the napkin belongs to: “It is my napkin.” “It is Daddy’s.” “It is John’s.”
  • While shopping for groceries, discuss what you will buy, how many you need, and what you will make. Discuss the size (large or small), shape (long, round, square), and weight (heavy or light) of the packages.

Helping Toddlers Expand Language Skills

When we help children learn how to use language, we want to start by helping them do more of what they’re already doing by reinforcing and helping them feel proud about their attempts to communicate. Early language acquisition is instinctive and for most children tends to happen quite naturally. But how we as adults respond to their attempts to communicate can have an impact—accelerating or decelerating their language development.

As a speech-language pathologist who works with young children who are in the process of acquiring and developing language, I have collected many strategies and techniques that help children learn. Here are some of the basics that you can begin to use at home in everyday interactions with all children — those who are acquiring language typically and those who may be having a little more trouble.

Speech comes later

As all parents know, words aren’t the only way to communicate. Young children point, make eye contact, and use body language to give us messages. Recognizing, encouraging, and positively reinforcing these precursors to language set the stage for speech production and language to come. But even before kids figure out how to point to something they want, they communicate with us in other ways.

Early on, when infants cry because they’re hungry or uncomfortable, they may simply be reacting to how they feel — but when parents interpret and respond to their cries and sounds, babies begin to notice the reciprocal relationship between vocalization and getting their needs met. This encourages them to begin intentionally communicating their needs, through things like pointing and body language and making more sounds.

Eventually words will become the most efficient way for them to communicate with us, but until then parents shouldn’t overlook the importance of shaping nonverbal communication, which cements the utility of communication in a child’s mind and drives him to learn to communicate in more sophisticated ways.

One of the most interesting things about the development of language in children is that it is closely related to play. The time period when kids begin producing their first words, usually around 12 to 13 months, is also the same time that symbolic play evolves. By symbolic play I mean something like a child holding a banana to their ear and pretending that it is a phone.

Developmentally speaking, it makes sense that these two things would occur at the same time because children must first learn to think symbolically in order to use language, since language is symbolic (a word represents an object, for example). So when you join your child in imaginative play, you are actually encouraging and helping to expand their new capacity to represent things mentally and symbolically.

Observing and understanding your child’s play skills can help you as a parent know what to expect next. For example, if your child hasn’t moved past banging a spoon on the table, you shouldn’t expect them to be using speech to communicate yet because, developmentally, the intent to communicate is still emerging.

Creating opportunities

There are lots of ways parents can create opportunities that encourage kids to practice their communication skills. A favorite is putting things just out of reach. For example instead of handing your son a granola bar that you know he wants, let him see it slightly out of reach and wait for him to ask for it in some way.

How you arrange things in your home can create lots of opportunities for talking. Walk around the house and notice where the books and toys are. Maybe put the more desirable toys a little higher up (but still within eye-level). Similarly, you can try giving kids only part of a puzzle or Mr. Potato Head toy. Let them ask you for the other pieces they need. The goal here isn’t to frustrate your child, but it is to manipulate the environment in a way that encourages them to ask for things, notice things, and use intentional communication.

Another fun way to get kids communicating is to pretend to be forgetful. During a routine that you and your daughter have established — for example getting dressed — you can forget to put her socks on before her shoes. If your daughter is used to socks coming before shoes, she is going to notice the change in routine and “catch” you being forgetful.

You can also pause during some predicable activity, like singing a favorite song. If she likes “The Itsy Bitsy Spider,” maybe one day sing, “The itsy bitsy spider ran up the — ” and then pause, encouraging her to fill in the blank. This not only encourages her to retrieve and use new vocabulary words, but also teaches her turn taking and that using language in a back and forth exchange is fun!

Strategies to expand language skills

When working with kids on language skills, your goal should always be to help them reach just the next level of complexity — nothing more and nothing less. For example if your child communicates in one or two word bursts, your goal should be to model and use three and four word sentences. But make sure to follow your child’s lead so they remain engaged and empowered to try out new words and communicate in new ways.

Talking and communicating with others should be fun! Remember, language is something kids acquire naturally, so we want to watch what they’re interested in, observe and listen to how they communicate, and help bring them to the next level of language skill.

Here are some strategies you can use with kids from birth all the way up to five years old, depending upon their language level. How you do these things may look different during infancy compared to when kids are starting to use words, but the basic idea will remain the same.

  • Imitate: If your daughter is making noises (babbling), making another sound in play, or even banging a spoon, you can do that too. Imitating children’s sounds, words, and actions shows them that they’re being heard and that you approve of what they’re doing or saying. It also promotes turn taking and, best of all, encourages them to imitate you and your more complex language utterances.
  • Interpret: If your son is pointing to the apple juice that he wants to drink, he is communicating with you. Take this to the next level by interpreting what he is trying to say. Respond with, “Apple juice! You want apple juice!”
  • Expanding and recasting: When your daughter says “red truck,” you can expand on that by saying, “Yes, a big red truck. ” If your son says, “The dragon jumping on the bed,” you can recast his grammar by saying, “The dragon is jumping on the bed. Use stress and intonation to highlight the words you want your child to focus on.
  • Commenting and describing: Instead of telling kids what to do during playtime, be a sportscaster and give a play-by-play of what they’re doing. Say, “You’re driving the red car around in circles,” or, “You’re putting the cow into the barn. The cow is going to sleep.” This models good vocabulary and grammar and helps kids organize their thoughts. Maybe they weren’t actually putting the cow to sleep — maybe they were just putting it inside the barn—but by suggesting that you’ve given them a new concept to consider.
  • Eliminate negative talk: Try not to say things like, “That’s not where the cow goes,” or, when they’re coloring, “The sky isn’t pink.” Remember we want to encourage all attempts to communicate and validate those attempts so that kids do more of it. We all respond better to more positive phrasing.
  • Contingent responses: Respond immediately to all attempts to communicate, including words and gestures. This is a big one. It shows kids how important communication is and gives you the opportunity to model more sophisticated language skills.
  • Balance turn taking: Give kids the space to exercise their communication skills by making sure they get a turn. Turns don’t need to be talking, either. A turn could be your child handing you a toy or making eye contact. Maybe your daughter will look at you because she needs help opening a box. You can say, “You need help opening the box!” Then you can wait for her to hand you the box — that’s her taking another turn. Turn taking can be hard for parents because we’re used to taking charge of situations, but it is important to give kids the opportunity to use the skills they are developing.
  • Label things: Even when kids aren’t ready to use words yet, you can prepare them by labeling things in their environment. During bubble baths keep referring to the bubbles; during snack time you can label the apple juice.
  • Limit “testing”: If you know that your son knows which sound a pig makes, don’t keep asking him. Testing him during playtime instead of just playing with him can be stressful. Instead you could say, “I wonder where the pig is going?” It still invites him to respond, but it doesn’t put him on the spot.
  • Labeled praise: Instead of just saying “good job,” put a label on that praise. If you’re child isn’t yet using words, (or even if they are) you could say, “Good job putting all the blocks back,” because it reinforces their good behavior even more. For a child who is using some words to communicate, you could say, “Nice job telling me that you want apple juice,” or “Nice job saying more juice please.” This will help create positive feelings around communication and motivate them to continue to try and add new words.

  • District grade based on parent and student survey responses
  • Culture and diversity school culture, racial and economic student diversity
  • Resources and Facilities: expenses utilized per student and staffing
  • Clubs and activities: expenses utilized for extracurricular activities
  • Sports grade: based on the athletic sports offered at the school, and participation

Which California school districts are run well?

Posted inCommentary

by
Dan Walters

In summary

A new on-line tool allows parents and voters to see how well their local school districts are prepared to make the reforms necessary to raise academic achievement in California.

Gov. Gavin Newsom is fond of characterizing his state as a national — or even global — model in all things good, from economic clout to fighting climate change.

One conspicuous absence on his list of California’s virtues is its public education system, for good reason.

In statewide and nationwide tests of K-12 academic achievement, California lags badly behind. Learning is especially deficient among children from poor families, but even kids from affluent California families tend to lag behind those in other states.

To the extent that this educational crisis receives any attention in the state Capitol, the discussion is almost always confined to money, on the fanciful notion that spending more will automatically increase academic attainment.

One reason money doesn’t solve the problem is that the state provides very little oversight on how the money is spent, including the extra funds that local school systems receive specifically to close the achievement gap. State education officials intervene only when local systems are flirting with insolvency.

Some school districts spend their money wisely and effectively and some don’t and outcomes largely hinge on the quality of their governance. Those with engaged and committed boards and administrators tend to have better outcomes than those with inconsistent, politics-driven and often chaotic governance.

That’s why a massive effort to judge how well California’s local school systems are structured and managed is welcome.

Arun Ramanathan, CEO of Pivot Learning, an Oakland-based non-profit organization that advises school systems on improving instruction, created a series of benchmarks to gauge how well school districts are prepared to embrace reforms. He also created a website that allows the public to view the results for every school district with at least 2,500 students.

“Despite billions in investment and decades of effort, new reform efforts rarely have intended impacts at the district, school and classroom level, and sustained improvement is rare,” Ramanathan told EdSource, a website of education journalism. “There are rarely insights into why. The District Readiness Index resulted from that questioning.”

The ratings cover five “domains” – community relations, finance, leadership, personnel policies and workplace conditions. Users can see how the districts score in each, with overall ratings designated by colors. Blue is the best, yellow is in the middle and orange is the worst.

The grading process resulted in about half of the 420 districts getting yellow grades and about 40% blue marks with roughly two dozen placed in the orange category, meaning they have “few foundations” for achieving needed reforms.

Some of the state’s largest districts are colored orange, including Los Angeles Unified, whose enrollment approaches 10% of the state’s 6 million public school students.

It’s not surprising that LA Unified, Oakland Unified, San Francisco Unified and Sacramento Unified received low marks because all have been in constant political turmoil and financial distress of their own making.

Three of the large districts – San Diego Unified, Elk Grove Unified and San Juan Unified – escaped the orange designation and are marked as yellow.

A few large districts achieved blue status for being well prepared, including Fresno Unified, Long Beach Unified and San Bernardino Unified. But most of the blue districts tend to be either in affluent suburbs – no surprise there – or in rural areas.

Most interestingly, the blue list includes a number of districts with large numbers of poor students, such as Brawley and Calexico in poverty stricken Imperial County.

The District Readiness Index provides new ammunition for the school reform movement in California, which seeks to elevate students’ welfare over the petty politics, particularly in Los Angeles Unified and other large districts, that sabotage their educations.

It also ranks 51st in student-teacher ratio and 37th in percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunches.

What You Should Know About High Schools in California

A good understanding of general high schools across the state is a good way to set your expectations in the right direction.

So on this note, we briefly pointed out some of the norms of California high schools.

Credit Load

Students must complete 13 special annual courses before graduating from high school in California.

Of course, this includes three English lessons, two math lessons and two science courses.

California’s high private high school enrollment rate

California is the most populous US state with the highest number of students.

In the 2005-06 school year, more than 6.2 million students enrolled in California high schools.

Thus, California has one of the highest recruitment projections in the country.

With such a large number of students, private high schools and public schools are trying their best to serve such a large number.

California private high school dropout rates

One of the biggest problems with the California school system is the high dropout rate in high school, especially among minority students.

Approximately 22% of African Americans and Hispanics in California live in poverty.

However, only about 68% of students living below the poverty line usually complete secondary school.

In light of this, the State of California passed the Recovery and Dropout Prevention Act (SB 65) as the government’s way of dealing with California’s high dropout rate.

In addition, Senate Bill 65 initiated three new dropout prevention activities: the Student Motivation and Support Program, the Alternative Education Counselors (AEOC) Program, and the Educational Clinic Program.

Although the typical teacher-to-student ratio has recently been estimated to average 12:1. subjects in the country, states, and some city districts.

Typically for a representative sample of 4th, 8th, and 12th grade students.

California kids tend to do poorly on NAEP tests.

However, in the long run, the results of the California school have improved significantly.

But they are still rather mediocre.

NAEP measures, while imperfect, allow researchers and policymakers to monitor the overall education system by comparing student achievement across years, states, grades, and student subgroups.

California private high school acceptance rates

A very accurate estimate of an average approval rate of 84%.

However, minority enrollment is 48% and 50% of schools are religious (most often Roman Catholic and Christian).

    Reading-readiness emphasis helps kids perform at 2nd grade level when they graduate from the preschool.

    Flexible hours sign-up with choice to enroll for as many hours per day, or as many days per week. Choice of adding extra hours any day, (or extra days) aside from your routine schedule. It comes in handy when parents have appointments, last minute errands, etc. You don’t need to rush at pick-up time.

    Affordable rates. Monthly tuition $200 (half days, 2 days/wk), ranging to $900 (extended days, 5 days/wk).

    Balanced focus on “Academic” as well as “Social development” addressing all the needs of the child, for eventual success in life.

    Preschoolers read at 2nd grade level
    (Click on the picture above to play video)

    Academic learning at noon and in the afternoon also. All other preschools offer only one 3-hour academic session in a day, only in the mornings. We offer three academic sessions of 3-hours each, daily, in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon.

    Drop-off later during the day (at 8:30am or 11:30am or 2:30pm), yet still get the same academic education. Preschool open 6:30am – 6:30pm.

    Know what your child did today even before you pick them up. We upload pictures/videos everyday, of what activities get done that day, on Facebook .

    Track your child’s progress daily. We send home everyday, all the worksheets and artwork, that children work on that day. This way parents know real-time as to what level of learning their child is at. This also helps parents get involved in the child’s learning by doing with them the extra work we send home.

    Awesome field trips and events. We have seasonal events almost every month, mostly at venues other than the preschool. Families get to mingle with each other for extended time in an entertaining environment. These events are very nicely celebrated so checkout the pictures/videos on Facebook .

    Yes we have openings and vacancies. We’re enrolling now. No waiting list at our newest location in Lake Forest.

    Our Montessori preschool programs in Irvine and Lake Forest are focused on the needs of parents of preschoolers. We constantly assess what the parents’ needs are and challenge ourselves in fulfilling all of their childcare needs.

    We differentiate ourselves from other local preschools by our academic curriculum. Most local preschools have academic

    learning only in the mornings and the rest of the day is primarily baby-sitting. We on the other hand, each day have three academically-balanced 3-hour-

    sessions starting at 8:30 am, 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. This is a blessing for parents whose life schedule does not allow them to bring their child in for academic learning primarily in the morning. Each session is identical in learning curriculum for children. Parents may choose to sign up for as many sessions or days as they like.

    On the principles of education

    The countries of Asia have always stood apart in the world. Their culture, traditions and customs are so different from Western ones that sometimes it seems as if they live in a completely different world. And if most of the surnames in the culture of different countries were formed plus or minus according to the same principles, in Japan the traditions of forming these proper names are somewhat different.

    Chinese surnames are considered the most ancient in the world. The appearance of the first of them was recorded more than 3,000 years ago, when in Europe they started talking about such a concept only in the 11th century.

    Things are even worse with the neighbor of South Korea – there are only about 200 surnames, the most common of which are Kim, Li, Choi, Tszyu. They make up 50% of the total population.

    The most popular and numerous are surnames, the type of which comes from toponyms. They make up about 70-80% of the total family volume. This includes:

    • names of geographical objects;
    • plant names;
    • names of objects of inanimate nature.

    Next are the surnames, the main part of which are hieroglyphs with the names of parts of the world and other spaces. The third group includes various adjectives.

    And from all these “components” this or that surname is formed. The combinations can be endless, hence the inability to fix the exact number of proper names in Japan.

    More often in Japanese, you can hear surnames formed from court officials (for example, Konoe, Dazai).

    As for another common practice – the formation of surnames from the name of the father, in Japan this principle is practically not used. Fathers’ names are usually inherited by sons in given names rather than surnames.

    History of the origin of Japanese surnames

    Now that everything has been said about the uniqueness of Japanese surnames, we can talk about their history. Until the 19th century, in Japan, surnames were given only to aristocrats (or kuge – for locals) and samurai (or bushi). All other inhabitants of the country had to make do with nicknames and names.

    The most notable are the following surnames (genus Fujiwara):

    • Takashi;
    • Kujo;
    • Gojo;
    • Ichijo;
    • Konoe.

    Some Japanese took the names of the towns and villages in which they lived as surnames, while others took the name of the shop where they worked. Especially creative were surnames from the names of plants, seasons, weather phenomena.

    About modern surnames in Japan

    The new generation of Japanese has been trying for a long time to expand the old and well-established list of nominal hieroglyphs (including family hieroglyphs). As a result, they achieved their goal, and completely new surnames with original sound and spelling appeared in language practice, unlike what was before.

    However, it’s funny that rather “extravagant” hieroglyphs were included in the updated list, as well as signs with a strange nominal meaning: “beetle”, “frog”, “spider”, “turnip”.

    The Japanese, who are extremely sensitive to such liberties in relation to children, quickly became indignant, and therefore the country’s Ministry of Justice urgently excluded from the updated list frank inappropriate hieroglyphs, for example, “buttock”, “curse”, “malice” and other.

    In Japan, any adult can take a pseudonym, and after death he receives a new, posthumous name (kaimyo), which is carved on a wooden tablet (ihai). This is a kind of embodiment of the spirit of the deceased, because most Japanese believe in rebirth and try not to get attached to such trifles as, for example, a personal name and surname in one of their lives.

    The most euphonious Japanese surnames

    The peculiarity of Japanese surnames is that almost all of them are euphonious. Either the matter is in the principles of education, or in the phenomena from which proper names come, or in everything at once.

    The most harmonious are the following surnames:

    • Yamaguchi;
    • Inoe;
    • Kimura;
    • Saito;
    • Hayashi;
    • Maury;
    • Yamazaki;
    • Ikeda;
    • Maeda;
    • Fujita;
    • Hashimoto.

    In Japan, as well as in America, for example, surnames are practically not tied to gender. Moreover, the wife is obliged to take her husband’s surname after marriage, since the family line is inherited exclusively through the male line.

    However, there are still a few remarkable surnames that are more associated with the feminine:

    • Akiyama;
    • Kaneko;
    • Araki;
    • Isis;
    • Ishikawa;
    • Wada;
    • Mizuno.

    Conclusion

    The tradition of surname formation in Japan stands out against the background of traditions in other countries. This concerns not only linguistic principles, but also, for example, historical ones. Therefore, when it comes to Asian proper names, Japan should always be discussed separately. Many traditions that have developed millennia ago are still active in this country today.

    Bright Horizons provides comprehensive solutions for back-up and emergency child care, relieving stress for working families and enabling employers to ensure business continuity.

    Bring Back-Up Care to Your Company

    8 Common Reasons Working Parents Need Back-Up Care

    1. Children who are home sick
    2. Nanny cancellations or sick days
    3. School holidays and summer vacation
    4. Weather emergencies
    5. Schools closed for teacher development
    6. Lack of child care options while on a daycare waiting list
    7. Relocated employee without family nearby to call in a pinch
    8. Before- and after-school gaps in care time for parents with long hours

    The need for back-up child care

    For working professionals, caring for young children while advancing their careers can feel overwhelming at times. Workers are often forced to skip meetings, miss deadlines, or sacrifice billable hours to deal with child care emergencies.

    Balancing an elementary school schedule with a professional work week is not easy, but it’s essential for parents of children who are still too young to be on their own. According to research, nearly half of all working mothers have had to dial back their careers to accommodate their child’s needs. Implementing back-up daycare programs is an effective way for employers to make their workplace more family-friendly and to recruit top talent, while enabling productive and sustained careers for employees.

    Back-up care with Bright Horizons

    As a premier provider of corporate daycare centers, Bright Horizons provides back-up child care that can help employees solve child care gaps and enable employers to better support their workers with families.

    When employees experience a disruption in their normal care routine, they can contact our 24-hour call centers staffed with experienced consultants who can help to arrange the best care for their children. The employee’s time is limited to the phone call – Bright Horizons staff takes care of the rest, preventing the stress and distraction of child care gaps from affecting business productivity.

    Back-up child care with Bright Horizons includes:

    • Center-based care at any one of our 3,500+ child care locations, providing convenient emergency care in a location operated or directly contracted with Bright Horizons.
    • In-home care for more individualized care at critical moments, provided by experienced caregivers from Bright Horizons or other top-rated providers.

    Lost productivity due to child care gaps is costing businesses billions of dollars. With back-up child care, companies can keep disruptions from impacting productivity and continuity, minimizing unplanned time off and keeping employees focused on their work.

    Back-up child care has long-term advantages as well, saving employees from the burnout that comes from managing both a career and a family as well as the conflicts that arise from negotiating time off. Accommodating the needs of family schedules is a priority for many workers, and providing backup child care is one of the best ways that organizations can retain and reward employees.

    Another back-up care advantage is the ability to recruit highly talented candidates who have children or are who planning to become parents. Offering back-up child care as a benefit can be a highly effective recruitment tool, attracting top talent required to move the business forward.

    Leaving for an alternate airfield: what to do? — FrequentFlyers.ru

    Sometimes it happens that a plane does not land at all where it was planned, but at an alternate airfield. The decision to go to the alternate is made exclusively by the aircraft commander – no one can force him to make a choice, although controllers, of course, can recommend certain actions depending on the situation. However, in any case, this does not happen spontaneously. When drawing up a flight plan, alternate airfields along the entire route must also be calculated. Moreover, if somewhere an alternate airfield is closed, the route can be changed right in flight so that at each stage of the flight the alternate airfield is within reach. And when flying across the ocean, you even have to specifically fly not by the shortest route, but in such a way as to be within the reach of alternate airfields capable of receiving a specific type of aircraft. What if you had to land in the wrong place?

    The flight plan must indicate alternate aerodromes in the form of ICAO codes. In this example, instead of Sochi, you can end up in Anapa or Krasnodar.

    The reason for leaving to an alternate airfield may be a sudden breakdown, medical indications for one of the passengers or crew members (it became ill on board), an air brawl (and all costs will then be sued from the culprit of the unrest) or, corny, non-flying weather at the destination airport . An explanation is needed here: different types of aircraft may have different weather minimums (that is why some planes land and others do not), and different crews may have different weather minimums – that is, depending on the experience of the people at the controls, even the same aircraft may not land each other. another: someone can, but someone will have to fly to the spare. Moreover, if the weather at the destination airport is already non-flying by the time of departure, then the plane will not fly anywhere, and the flight will be delayed or canceled.

    Heavy fog may interfere with landing.

    So, you have landed at the alternate airfield. The best option is if the landing was due to a brawl or poor health of one of the passengers: they will be dropped off to take appropriate action and you will go on, and the delay will be small. With a minor breakdown at a major airport, the problem will also be resolved quickly, and you will be sent further pretty soon, without even getting off the plane. In general, when leaving for an alternate airfield, most likely you will just sit on the plane during your entire stay there: you should not count on the fact that you will taxi up to the air bridge and go to a cozy business lounge.

    It is not known what is worse – sitting for several hours in a stationary plane or in a crowded terminal.

    However, do not forget about the crew’s work time: if the “shift” ends, then with all the desire to fly away will not work. You can still find a reserve crew at the home airport, which, however, will require additional time, but outside it, the pilots will simply go to the hotel to sleep.

    And if it becomes clear that in the foreseeable future you will not fly anywhere, the fun begins. You will be dropped from the plane. True, not immediately, because you are an unscheduled flight for the airport, and you need to find a parking lot, ladders, buses, etc. – just like that, they usually stand idle only at unloaded airports. The airline will then decide what to do next. If you are at a major hub, just like a canceled flight, you will be directed to your destination by an alternate route. Roughly speaking, if you flew from Dusseldorf to St. Petersburg via Moscow, and landed in Minsk, then theoretically you can be sent on a flight from Minsk to St. Petersburg so that you get to your destination faster. By the way, for this you can not stand in line at the counter, but call the airline’s call center (and many foreign countries have a separate number for these cases, designated “irregular operations”). If the distance between the alternate airfield and the airport of arrival is short, and the bad weather promises to rage for a long time, it is possible to organize an alternative transfer by train or bus. By the way, you can try to return the money for the “unsuccessful” segment and fly to where you need to, on your own, but if alternative transport has been provided, this will not be easy.

    Amadeus offers a complete CRM system for irregular operations.

    Once in the terminal building, it is better not to go beyond the “clean zone”, because you will most likely not have a boarding pass, and it will be difficult to get through control again. In addition, if the alternate airfield is located in a country to which you do not have a visa, you will not be released anywhere. In some cases, if the delay is very long and the airport is international, passengers may be issued an emergency visa, but most often it is intended only for those who become ill on board and require immediate hospitalization. For ordinary people, most often they simply collect passports and take them to a hotel (the requirements for providing food, water and overnight when landing at an alternate airfield are the same as when a flight is delayed). And at some airports (for example, in Switzerland) bus tours around the city are available for transfer passengers – and some airlines use this opportunity to entertain those stuck in the middle of the journey; there is evidence on the Internet that passengers of Aeroflot and Rossiya were carried on them.

    However, you can sit down at a military or even at an abandoned airfield in some wilderness – then there will be no entertainment, and you will all be put to sleep together in the barracks or in a village school.

    Barracks is not a Hilton for you, but it’s better than sitting on a plane for 20 hours.

    It is important to remember that when landing at an alternate airport, no one will unload your baggage from the aircraft: at least this is additional time and money, but it also happens that baggage was loaded into containers at the departure airport, and unloading and loading systems at the alternate there are no containers, so it is impossible even physically. Therefore, essentials – from a toothbrush to a phone charger – should always be taken with you in hand luggage.

    In some cases, landing at an alternate airport can be a pleasant surprise: for example, if you are flying to St. Petersburg with a transfer in Moscow, and the commander decided to land the plane in Pulkovo. Or in Moscow itself, take a seat at Vnukovo instead of Sheremetyevo, and you live in the South-West. In this case, if the delay is long and you are let off the plane, you can immediately go home – unless, of course, you have luggage. However, you can not pick up your luggage, but come to the destination airport for it later: it will be waiting for you in the KNB (unclaimed baggage room).

    Spare care: the resignation of the leader of Kyrgyzstan will intensify the political crisis | Articles

    The departure of the President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov will only worsen the situation in the republic and provoke a new round of inter-clan struggle, politicians and experts interviewed by Izvestia agreed . The fate of the country’s leader who announced his resignation will be decided at a meeting on October 16 by the parliament. At the same time, domestic political instability also affected the economic sector. Russia has suspended financial support for the republic , said presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov. This is partly due to the fact that after the destabilization of the political situation, Kyrgyzstan stopped transferring customs payments to partners in the EAEU , a source close to the government told Izvestia, the information was confirmed by a federal official.

    When leaving, leave

    The day before, the President of Kyrgyzstan denied all media reports that he would soon resign. He explained this by saying that he simply could not leave his people. But less than 24 hours have passed since Sooronbai Jeenbekov changed his mind and resigned.

    I don’t hold on to power. I don’t want to remain in the history of Kyrgyzstan as a president who shed blood and shot at his own citizens,” Jeenbekov explained his decision, addressing the citizens.

    The new prime minister Sadyr Japarov insisted on the resignation of the president, who was approved by the parliament for the second time only on October 14 and whom Jeenbekov did not want to see in this post, hoping to put his man at the head of the cabinet. With the departure of the leader of the state, the situation will not calm down, but, on the contrary, will flare up with renewed vigor, experts say.

    Photo: REUTERS/Fabrizio Bensch

    — Jeenbekov is the only legitimate force. He must remain in this role in order to save the country from the fight of all against all , which will immediately begin, ”political scientist, coordinator of the Greater Eurasia expert platform Sergey Masaulov told Izvestia.

    According to the law, the powers of the head of state will be transferred to the speaker of parliament, that is, Kanatbek Isaev, the expert explained. However, yesterday at the prime minister’s rally, his supporters shouted slogans against Isaev. The protesters hope for the transfer of powers to Sadyr Japarov.

    Kyrgyzstan’s problem is that it is a parliamentary republic, and a lot for the president will depend on what political forces gather in parliament. However, whether the head of state will really resign remains in question. According to the press service of the parliament, they will consider the resignation of the country’s leader on October 16.

    Perhaps the resignation is an attempt to gain time and take control over the situation in the country and over the security forces, Andrey Grozin, head of the Central Asia and Kazakhstan department at the Institute of CIS Countries, and political scientist Vladimir Evseev told Izvestia.

    Now the former president is also threatened with criminal prosecution – such a course of events is typical not only for Kyrgyzstan, but also for the post-Soviet space as a whole, says Vasily Korchmar, former chief adviser of the CIS countries department at the Foreign Ministry, retired envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary II class.

    Photo: RIA Novosti/Aleksey Maishev

    The arrest of the former president is possible. Everything will depend on the emotions that are present in the protesters . As an example, we can recall the situation when Nikol Pashinyan came to power in Armenia and the former president was arrested. There was a story with Mikheil Saakashvili, who was forced to leave because a criminal case was opened against him. In Kyrgyzstan there is a struggle of clans. All trials take place at the top of the government,” said Vasily Korchmar.

    Reversal of terms

    Russia has stopped transferring money to the republic and generally suspended its financial support, Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

    “Now, of course, since there is no government as such, and since we are seeing such a moment of crisis, therefore, of course, before the departments, all organizations, of course, there is a certain pause,” he said.

    This is due to the fact that after the destabilization of the political situation in the country, Kyrgyzstan stopped transferring customs payments to partners in the EAEU, a source close to the government told Izvestia, the information was confirmed by a federal official.

    Now the countries of the union distribute the received import customs duties within the EAEU according to certain standards. Partners must transfer 85.3% of funds to the budget of the Russian Federation, 1.9% to the Kyrgyz Republic. Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia receive respectively 7.1%, 4.6% and 1.2% of import duties.

    The trend towards the isolation of countries within economic unions is quite clearly visible throughout the year – first, the EU countries remembered that they have their own sovereign borders during the pandemic, a similar situation occurred in the EAEU, said Vladimir Klimanov, director of the RANEPA Center for Regional Policy. According to him, The potential new Kyrgyz leadership is not satisfied with any conditions within the union, the refusal to transfer customs payments is a way to demonstrate their position and exert some political and economic pressure.

    Photo: RIA Novosti/Aleksey Maishev

    Against the backdrop of the aggravation of the situation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a telephone conversation with his newly appointed Kyrgyz counterpart Ruslan Kazakbaev . Both sides expressed their concern about the internal political conflict, while reaffirming their intentions to maintain cooperation.

    Strategic relations between Kyrgyzstan and Russia with the change of leadership, according to Sergei Masaulov, are unlikely to change for the worse . The political scientist recalled that Moscow had written off Kyrgyzstan’s debt of $700 million and provided a grant of $250 million. The bulk of the active population of Kyrgyzstan works in Russia, and annually migrants bring $2 billion to their country, on which the rest of the population lives.

    It is still difficult to predict how relations between Russia and Kyrgyzstan will develop after the change of power, because the persistent efforts of the new prime minister raise many questions in Russia, Leonid Kalashnikov, head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, told Izvestia.

    We believe that Dastan Bekeshev, Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament, is a politician ready to cooperate with Moscow. But the information about the prime minister remains unclear,” the politician believes.

    What is happening in Kyrgyzstan, according to Andrei Grozin, is bad not for the neighbors, but for the country itself. At the same time, Russia will not interfere in the internal political process in the republic, because the local elite is now keen on sharing money and portfolios.

    — There is an anarchic situation and anarchy in Kyrgyzstan, and each of the leaders of the October rebellion sees himself in this place. You can immediately name 20 people who will make efforts to take this post, ”the expert told Izvestia.

    Protesters attempt to break into a government building during a rally against the results of parliamentary elections in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, October 5, 2020

    The political crisis has been going on in Kyrgyzstan for almost two weeks. It all started on October 4, when, after the parliamentary elections, the failed parties staged riots.

    • It is common for some children to exhibit separation anxiety when it is time for their parent to leave. This is normal behavior in a child’s emotional development. The longer the parent of an anxious child delays their departure, the more anxiety the child is likely to feel. We ask that you say your goodbye at the door and the teachers will comfort and assist the child through the anxious time. If a child continues to cry and cannot be consoled after a reasonable amount of time, we will call you. Our teachers have been specially trained to help comfort your child and we have a play therapist on staff who can help settle your child down if needed. Usually, after a few visits, the children learn that you will come back and that this is a fun time where they can play, learn and make friends.

    • It is the responsibility of anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect to report it. Information on reporting is posted in the intake’s office in the document titled Keeping Children Safe. The Child Abuse Hotline number is 1-800-252-5400.

    Share Donetsk orphanage plays herself in a Broadway musical

    Katerina Pogontseva (Rostov region)

    Tanya – Annie

    Tanya Myagkova plays the main role in the musical. She, along with her brother, ended up in the Donetsk orphanage on March 1997 years old, he was 8 years old, she was 5. Their parents had tuberculosis, led an antisocial lifestyle, drank. Brother and sister rarely saw each other: the girl lived with her father and grandmother. Sasha traveled half the country with his mother, who was a wanderer. The boy did not have several teeth – the parent knocked them out when he asked her to eat.

    Tanya was small for her years, with a sunken chest – the consequences of rickets. Both children did not know elementary things, did not know how to play with toys, were gloomy, their vocabulary consisted mainly of unprintable words.

    – The Myagkovs were one of the first wards of our orphanage, – says Elena Razinkova, permanent director of the institution. – At that time, the building was divided into two wings, in one there was an orphanage, in the other – a kindergarten, and the playground in the yard was shared. We thought that our orphans, having communicated with the pupils of the kindergarten, would behave better, gain good manners from them, but it turned out the other way around. The orphans taught the kids such words and things that parents began to take their children from our kindergarten. And gradually the orphanage occupied the entire building.

    Sasha never completely forgot his old life. He is still rather reserved and unsociable, like a little wolf cub.

    But Tanyusha has changed beyond recognition in these six years and has become a well-mannered, educated, charming girl, with whom it is not shameful to appear in a decent society.

    – Starting from the first grade, she studied diligently, and after school she took up singing, – says Razinkova.

    The music worker of the orphanage immediately noticed Tanya’s sonorous voice. Later it turned out that Myagkova not only sings cleanly, but also has excellent artistic abilities, is very mobile and flexible.

    The girl was shown at various amateur art competitions. At one of the regional reviews, a small star was noticed by two wealthy Rostovites. The couple had been married for almost 10 years, but they could not have offspring – they wanted to adopt Tanya. They began to come to visit her in Donetsk, and once they even took her to their place for the weekend in Rostov. It seemed that just a little bit more, and the cherished dream of every orphanage – to find a father and mother – would come true for Tanya. Unexpectedly, the adoptive parents called the director of the orphanage and said that they were not ready to accept a child with such a difficult past into their home.

    – This news was a terrible blow for Tanya, – says Natalya Markova, deputy director for educational work. – She worried for a very long time, and then seemed to start up and went headlong into work.

    Thankfully, two years ago, thanks to the initiative of the mayor of Donetsk, two departments of the art school were opened on the basis of the orphanage: theater and choral. Leading teachers of vocal and acting skills, choreography, and music began to come to the orphanage and study with everyone who wanted to, there was no shortage of them. The lessons of creativity moved to a qualitatively different level, and the result was not long in coming. Last year, two pupils of the orphanage Tanya Myagkova and Ira Gurduza took first place in the competition of creativity of children from orphanages “Constellation” in Pskov.

    Ira and Anya

    Ira also plays in the musical. She is the oldest of the young actresses and therefore the most difficult for her. At the age of 14, she is forced to play an eleven-year-old.

    Ira has been in the orphanage for three years already. Her father divorced her mother and moved to Ukraine, her mother began to wander. For some time, Ira and her sister were raised by their grandmother, but then she died, and the girls were completely orphaned.

    The family of another participant in the musical, Anya Provotorova, had four children. At first, they lived no worse than others, and then difficult economic times began in the country. The keeper of the hearth, the holder of a diploma of higher education, found herself without a job (it is worth explaining that Donetsk, Rostov Region, is a small mining town). On this basis, her psyche was upset, she ceased to be adequate and could no longer provide her children with a normal existence. Then his father died, and the younger Provotorovs, Anya and her sister Nastya, ended up in an orphanage. The older brother got married and took the middle brother with him.

    Rostov women were received very well in Moscow. Placed in a boarding school named after Nikulin. The girls live and study there. In addition, every day they have rehearsals and performances at the Variety Theater. On New Year’s Eve, the artists of the musical congratulated them very warmly, gave them a bunch of toys, and the producer even invited them to her house for a few days.

    Initially, the project was designed for a year, but the premiere was such a success that the creators decided to extend it to two years.

    – Will it not turn out that after two years of a rather “starry” life in the capital, they will no longer be able to live as before in Donetsk? Will the return home be the biggest tragedy for them? – I’m interested in Elena Razinkova.

    – Before leaving, we had a big conversation with the girls, – Elena Ivanovna recalls. – Set them up to work. They were told that they should not relax and take for granted what was happening to them. That this is just a chance that they can either miss or use.

    This is one of the commandments that is strictly followed in the Donetsk orphanage.

    – Many of our wards know from their parents how difficult it is to find a place under the sun and how easy it is to sink to the bottom, – says Natalya Markova. They don’t want that fate for themselves. Therefore, our calls to study and work are not an empty phrase for them.

    Children do not miss a single competition – they write compositions, invent ditties, riddles, sing, play musical instruments. And they constantly win something: either a music center, or a computer, or upholstered furniture, or even a trip.

    – Children come to us with a wounded soul, who, as a rule, already inside the womb experienced a lack of affection, communication, nutrition, – says Elena Raznikova. – We try to find a niche for success for each of them, developing not only intelligence, but also creative abilities.

    Perhaps it was because of this that the Donetsk girls were the only ones from the Rostov region who could withstand the frantic pace of rehearsals and performances. Initially, the producers of the musical selected eleven people on the Don. It so happened that eight went to Moscow to participate in the final casting. And now only Tanya, Ira and Anya remained on the stage of the variety theater.

    In Donetsk they showed me the rooms where they lived. In a small corridor there is a wardrobe for outerwear, nearby there is a TV set and a table for dinner.

    – We didn’t make a common canteen, why should we create a bureaucracy? – Natalya Markova comments.

    The bedroom has five beds covered with bright pink silk bedspreads. Nearby is a large wardrobe. On the walls, as usual, hang pictures of idols. For girls from the orphanage, this is not Brad Pitt or even the soloists of the Smash group, but Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Natalia Oreiro.

    – On which bed Tanya slept, I won’t undertake to say, the furniture was recently rearranged, – Natalya Dmitrievna apologizes. – Somehow we lost sight of it, otherwise we could have hung a sign with a photograph over her bed. We are very proud of her. Moreover, for the girls who remained here, she is generally a role model no worse than “Brilliant” or “Cream”.

    The girls present during the conversation are smiling.

    – Would you like to become professional artists? Perform on the big stage? – I come to them.

    – Of course! – without hesitation, they answer in unison.

    p.s.

    According to the script of the musical, eleven-year-old orphan Annie lives in an orphanage run by a tough Miss Hannigan and dreams of running away and finding her parents. Alas, Miss Hannigan is as vigilant as she is insufferable. But one day luck smiles at the girl – in the form of an invitation to spend Christmas in the house of the millionaire Warbuck. The brave and kind Annie completely captivates this eccentric, and he is ready to adopt her, but the young heroine does not lose hope of finding her real parents. Then the touched rich man assigns a reward to the one who will find Annie’s dad and mom. The scammers respond to the ad first. But everything that is done, everything is for the better. The teachers of the Donetsk orphanage are convinced that the stories of their girls will have a happy ending.

    📖 INTRODUCTION. Once upon a time there was a girl who looked like you… Brett D. Page 3. Read online

    I started writing The Annie Stories about ten years ago. What prompted me to write them was that my then three-year-old daughter Amantha was a shy child. Somewhat later, when the journalists-interviewers who visited us got acquainted with the already somewhat matured Amantha, such an explanation aroused bewilderment in them.

    I’ve been asked, “How did The Annie Stories come about?” And I answered: “The reason for this was the timidity and shyness of Aman-you.” By that time, Amante was ten years old, and she was already definitely not a timid dozen. Journalists could not hide their surprise when she deftly intercepted the microphone from her parent in order to get more “airtime”.

    However, at the age of three Amantha was shy. Especially in unfamiliar surroundings. At the playground where we went out, Amantha, with great apprehension, finally decided to move away from me and play with other children. While the other children frolicked carelessly, Amantha sat at my feet, watching with awe and wonder. Other mothers looked at me with pity and sympathy.

    It is easy to guess that the thought of a kindergarten could hardly have excited Amantha. Therefore, my husband and I started talking about kindergarten ahead of time. We wanted to reassure the daughter, to convince her that the garden is very good, that she will be safe, that she will like it there, etc. They convinced Amantha until they were blue in the face. She listened, looked at us, but we understood that, despite the rosy picture that we painted in front of her, Amantha was not going to succumb to persuasion at all. The expression in her eyes clearly said: “Maybe kindergarten is heaven on earth for you, but not for me.”

    That’s when I got the idea to tell Amante a story. It was a story about a little girl named Annie. Annie lived in exactly the same house as ours. She had a dog just like ours, and she also had a dad and a mom, like

    Martin and me. But most importantly, she, like Amantha, was afraid to go to kindergarten. The story began with Annie’s first day in kindergarten, where it turned out not to be as bad as she first thought, and covered the following days. Every day Annie liked kindergarten more and more. By the end of the first week, she was already dreaming about going to kindergarten tomorrow.

    The story captivated my daughter. She asked for the continuation of the story about the girl Annie. And when Amantha reached the age required to enter kindergarten, she overcame her former reluctance with surprising ease, just like Annie in that story.

    I was simply amazed at the success of the therapeutic storytelling method. Every time my daughter was frightened about something or faced difficulties or problems, she would come to me and say, “Tell me a story about Annie.” And I told her about how similar difficulties met in Annie’s life. Carried away, Amantha asked to tell the story again and again and overcame difficulties, following the example of the heroine of the stories, to whom she managed to become attached.

    I began to explain to other parents how to tell “Annie stories”. Doctors and educators are also interested in this method. By the time the first volume of Tales of Annie was published, I had already accumulated a lot of positive feedback from parents and specialists. The children loved listening to these stories. The stories helped them feel more confident, stronger, overcome fears and better understand and resolve certain conflicts. Parents were happy to tell these stories, because it helped to find mutual understanding with the child. If earlier they were powerless to help the baby in trouble, now they could already do something. Moreover, this “something” was simple, natural and reasonable and saved me from going to a specialist psychologist.

    How children acquire knowledge and skills

    Stories, fairy tales and the inner world of a child are inseparable from each other. In any society, regardless of the degree of civilization and lifestyle, children’s stories gather a large audience of small listeners. There are good reasons for this.

    If we, adults, want to acquire some knowledge, we have many ways and channels for this. We can go to the library or bookstore and read whatever interests us. You can consult a specialist in this field, get the necessary information from newspaper and magazine articles, listen to lectures, take part in seminars. Finally, talk to friends and exchange information and thoughts.

    All this requires certain professional skills the ability to read and research the material, the ability to express one’s thoughts.

    These skills are not given to a person initially, they are acquired with experience. Children, on the other hand, cannot carry on a conversation at an adult level, and yet the problems that occupy them are no less important. How can you help them acquire knowledge?

    Through games and imagination. Throw the rattle game introduces babies to the law of gravity. Other games teach reincarnation and let kids feel like mom, dad or a ferocious wild tiger. Imaginary doubles provide an opportunity to probe feelings and explore different possibilities.

    For a child, the world appears new and unknown. It needs to be explored, discovered, studied, mastered. Fortunately, children are born with an irresistible desire for knowledge. See with what perseverance, with what perseverance a baby learns to walk. He tries to get to his feet and falls face down, tries to get up again and falls again, and so on until he learns. It is unlikely that Sir Edmund Hilary showed more perseverance and determination in conquering Everest.

    Another example: notice how an infant persistently throws his favorite toy over the edge of his high chair. His curiosity and desire to learn more about the laws of the world around him are so great that he is ready to risk the loss of his precious “property”.

    Remember that a child acquires knowledge through play and imagination. Play is a way of acquiring adult skills. Children’s games, in essence, can be equated with work and study.

    If you watch children play, you will notice that a lot of this game is based on imitation. They imitate mothers and fathers, older brothers and sisters, TV heroes, etc. This imitative behavior is quite justified. Since most of the skills needed in the life of a modern person are much more complex than the instincts laid down by nature, they are acquired through imitation. Children observe someone and then do the same. In other words, by imitating adults, they thereby acquire the necessary skills. The strong desire of a child to imitate someone helps him to know the subtleties and complexities of adult behavior.

    Research has shown that when children are given two role models, one “successful”, with a positive result, the other unsuccessful, they prefer the first one. This circumstance is taken into account in the “Stories about Annie”. By successfully overcoming her challenges, Annie becomes a positive role model who teaches how to succeed.

    Communication through stories

    As adults, we should remember that if we want to teach a child something or convey some important idea to him, we need to make it recognizable, digestible and understandable. If we want to explain something difficult to a Frenchman, then, of course, we will succeed more if we speak French. When communicating with children, try to speak with them in a language that they understand and to which they respond best in the language of children’s fantasy and imagination.

    Stories, especially fairy tales, have always been the most effective means of communicating with children. Fairy tales have been passed down and passed down from generation to generation for centuries and are reflected in the cultures of different peoples. In his book on fairy tales, Bruno Bettelheim emphasizes their vital role in helping children overcome the anxieties and conflicts they have to face.

    Fairy tales raise important problems for children’s perception of the world. Cinderella, for example, talks about rivalry between sisters. In the tale of Hansel and Gretel, the main theme is the fear of being abandoned. “A Thumb Boy” tells about the defenselessness of a little hero who finds himself in a world where everything suppresses with its size, scale and power. Fairy tales contrast good and evil, altruism and greed, courage and cowardice, mercy and cruelty, perseverance and cowardice. They tell the child that the world is a very complex thing, that there are many injustices in it, that fear, regret and despair are as much a part of our existence as joy, optimism and confidence. But most importantly, they tell the child that if a person does not give up, even when the situation seems hopeless, if he does not change his moral principles, although temptation beckons him at every step, he will eventually win.

    Listening to these stories and fairy tales, children involuntarily find in them echoes of their own lives. They seek to use the example of a good hero in dealing with their fears and problems. In addition, stories and fairy tales instill hope in the child, which is extremely important. A child who is deprived of hope or who has lost it, refuses to fight and will never succeed.

    The impact of “Annie stories”

    “Annie stories” are like personalized, “humanized” fairy tales. They have a hero or heroine who has the characteristics of your child and who faces the same problems as your child. In Annie stories, the hero or heroine finds ways and means to understand and resolve their difficulties and conflicts. In addition to characters taken from life, stories may include characters from the world of fantasy and magic. The main characters can be bunnies, squirrels or little hippos. The main thing is that the situation of the protagonist resembles the situation of your child. The story “fits” to your child in the same way as the name of its main character. I called my stories “Annie stories” because my daughter’s name is Amantha. I wanted the heroine’s name to resemble her daughter’s name, but not be identical to it.

    If, for example, I told these stories to a boy named Jack, I could call them “Stories about John.”

    The Annie Stories are not a magic wand that makes all the troubles and pains of the real world disappear, but they allow children to learn about themselves and their problems what comforts them, what gives them strength and what they start from feel support and understanding.

    The effectiveness of “Annie stories” is due to many reasons.

    Above all, “Annie stories” allow the child to perceive their difficulties and deal with them in an effective way. After all, many children feel guilty about their fears or feel embarrassed about them. They find it difficult to talk about them openly. Often, when you start a direct conversation with children about this topic, they immediately withdraw and withdraw from the conversation. Listening to history is another matter entirely. In this case, the children are not instructed, they are not blamed or forced to talk about their difficulties and problems, they just listen to a story about a girl just like them. Nothing prevents them from listening, learning something new, comparing something, comparing without any unpleasant psychological consequences. This means that they can reflect on what they heard in a psychologically comfortable environment. By changing the context, you create security zone.

    Here it is appropriate to recall one joke that illustrates the importance of context. A man came to court demanding compensation for damages as a result of a car accident. The investigator cross-examined him.

    “So, Mr. Brown,” he says, “please tell the court what happened on the morning of February 12th.”

    Mr. Brown replies: “I was driving a car on a country road and suddenly I saw that some horse ran and galloped right in front of my car. I spun the steering wheel sharply to the side, but it was not possible to go around the horse. The car was thrown into a field by a collision with a horse, where it collided with a cow. I was thrown out of the car and immediately lost consciousness.

    “Yes,” says the investigator. “But you will probably not deny that when you came to your senses, a local veterinarian arrived at the scene. He bent over you and asked how you were feeling, to which you replied: “I have never felt better in my life than now!”

    “That’s the absolute truth,” replies Mr. Brown.

    “In that case,” protested the investigator, “how do you have the audacity to go to court and claim damages for physical injuries resulting from an accident?”

    “Let me explain,” Mr. Brown replies. “When I came to my senses, I found myself lying in a field and experiencing hellish pain. I saw the vet come. He approached a wounded horse that was lying in the middle of the road, took a gun and shot it. Then he went to a cow lying on the grass, looked at it, took a gun and shot it. After that, he came up to me and asked me how I felt. Of course, I replied that I had never felt better in my life.

    Let’s return to our conversation. Stories of Annie gives the child the opportunity to think, reflect and ask questions on conflict-prone “explosive” topics, without fear of interfering with the inner world. We adults often do the same. Most people are familiar with the practice of seeking advice on a confusing issue using the familiar trick: “My friend John has a problem…”

    It is very interesting to see how children use this safety zone.

    On the one hand, the child identifies with “Annie”, but when the story gets to the “sore point”, he takes the position of the listener, and then “Annie” is just a girl from the story. In this way, he gets the opportunity to observe his double from the side, not allowing embarrassment to take power over the mind.

    The form of a story has another advantage: for a child, a story is much more interesting than a moralizing lecture. All over the world, children turn off radios and televisions when they are lecturing, and turn them on when it’s time for a story.

    When I was writing a story about relaxation for the first book of The Annie’s Tales, I started by developing an appropriate “script” suitable for children. Having polished the “script”, I decided, as usual, to test it on my daughter. I waited until she was in a bad mood, went up to her and said in the most friendly voice: “Do you want me to help you relax?” Amantha looked at me longingly, and I began to read my script to her. In the end, Amantha snorted and said, “Boring.” She took my intervention as an obsession. The girl was irritated and not disposed to communicate. She didn’t want anyone to tell her what to do. I went back to my desk and tried to connect the relaxation scenario with the Annie story.

    I waited again for Amantha to be in a bad mood. This time, instead of “if you want me to help you relax,” I said, “Do you want me to tell you a story?”

    Amantha agreed and I started talking. She listened attentively, following with great interest the events that seemed to involve not only Annie, but also my daughter. At the end of the story, her face beamed. “Shine!” It was the highest honor an Australian schoolgirl could receive at the time.

    The relaxation scenario was absolutely identical to the one she declared “boring”. The only difference was that this time it was in the form of a story. The daughter did not get the impression that something was being imposed on her, and therefore she listened with interest.

    Stories allow the child to feel that he is not alone in his fears and experiences, that other children experience the same. This has a calming effect. The child gets rid of an inferiority complex, he no longer considers himself a freak, a dumbass, a wretch or a coward, etc. Such reassurance strengthens his self-confidence and helps him deal with difficulties.

    Stories have another positive side: in order to compose an interesting story for the child, the narrator must penetrate the child’s inner world. It is necessary to see the environment through the eyes of a child, which we do infrequently. We are so used to our adult perspective that we forget that there is another way of looking at things. We forget that to a child, the monsters in the closet are as real as you or me. We forget that children believe in magic just as sincerely and unconditionally as they believe in electricity or a magnet. We forget that what seems to us ordinary, trivial, can be perceived by a child as a catastrophe. We forget that our interpretation of events may be fundamentally different from the interpretation of the child. This also applies to language. For example, instead of saying “grandmother died,” adults usually say “we lost our grandmother.” Children who are not familiar with this euphemism will understand these words literally grandmother got lost somewhere. They may wonder why, in this trouble, no one even lifts a finger to look for her, and hope that one day she will still find her way home.

    Because we don’t want to bother looking at the world through the eyes of children, we often limit ourselves to trying to dissuade them and reject their ideas. To a child who is afraid of monsters in the dark, we say, “Don’t be silly; there are no monsters.” From this, the child begins to feel misunderstood, his will is paralyzed. And the fear only intensifies. This attitude of adults drives a wedge between parents and the child, because it seems to the child that the parents do not understand him. This complicates their further communication. Having lost hope of being understood, the child becomes isolated.

    When an adult tells one of the “Annie stories” a story that is close to the perception of the child and reflects his real life, the child acquires an experience of the opposite kind. The emerging mutual understanding improves the relationship between parents and the child. Remember the last time you talked with a person who was really attuned to your wave (and you felt it), understood your feelings. Remember how nice it was and how you missed it later.

    Annie’s stories encourage and encourage communication in a very special way. Often children avoid talking about their problems because they are ashamed of it, they are afraid of unwanted reactions from adults, or because they do not have enough words and concepts to describe their feelings and emotions. Hearing their often confused and confused feelings put into words in a story can be very rewarding.

    This gives you the opportunity to enter into a dialogue with your child. After all, talking with a child about his anxieties and problems sometimes resembles an interrogation in a prisoner of war camp: the name, military rank and registration number are all that you manage to find out. But the same child can become surprisingly open when he talks about what Annie is worried and worried about. So, if you don’t know what exactly is bothering your child, you can ask him what he thinks is bothering Annie. And in this case, again, the same sense of security allows him to be so open. If I’m not sure what exactly is causing my daughter’s concern, I’ll just ask her what kind of “Annie story” (or rather, what) she would like to hear from me. If she says something like, “Tell me how Annie went to the doctor,” I’ll know what the problem is.

    The method of communication through storytelling is also valuable because in this case the child feels independent to a certain extent in learning something new. He can spend as much time as he needs to assimilate the content of the story and grasp its idea. He can listen to the story again and again and focus on what is especially important for him at the moment nothing is forced on him. And, most importantly, everything new that he learns is perceived by him as his own achievement, as a result of independent efforts. If he wants to overcome fear, as Annie does, he does so because he decided to do it himself, and not because his mother said so. Thus, the child gets the opportunity to experience a sense of his own importance, his ability to weigh the situation and make his own decisions.

    I can give a very interesting example of this feeling of “self-reliance” in my daughter Amantha. She was eleven years old when she really wanted to prove that her mother’s opinion is not always correct. One day she came home from school completely upset. In response to my inquiries, Amantha gave me an angry look and blurted out in annoyance: “No one wants to play with me.” In translation, this meant that she quarreled with her best friend. I began to give her sound advice about what to do when your best friend doesn’t want to play with you, but Amantha cut me off: at that moment, the last thing she needed was my guidance. In the evening she was still irritated when I put her to bed. She could not forget the upsetting incident and was not at all eager to go to school the next day. Just in case, I asked, “Do you want me to tell you a story about Annie?” She looked in my direction with eyes that said: “If you need it so much,” and I began to tell her the story of what Annie did when her best friend did not want to play with her. Amantha listened with a sour expression on her face, and when I finished, she angrily announced: “Stupid story, and I felt even more bad than before.”

    I left the room feeling more inadequate than a minute ago.

    Maybe I was right, I thought, when I thought that the age limit for these stories was ten years.

    The next day, not without trepidation, I went to pick up Amantha at school. To my surprise, instead of yesterday’s gloomy face with the expression “no one wants to play with me,” I saw her usual cheerful face.

    “Hi,” I said. How was school today?

    “Fine,” Amantha replied.

    Encouraged, I inquired about the “social situation”: “Who did you play with today?”

    “With everyone,” she answered easily and carelessly. And Amantha told me about how she resolved her conflict.

    Essentially, she did what Annie did in the “stupid” story. So she followed the advice, managing to maintain her eleven-year-old sense of “self-reliance” and dignity. It was a feat that made a big impression on me.

    Annie’s stories are also good because they recreate the warm, kind and intimate atmosphere of a fairy tale told “for bedtime”, which, in itself, has a calming effect on both the parent and the child. In today’s world of electronics, television, video games and everyday turmoil, the cozy comfort of the world of fairy tales and heroes of children’s stories is a real oasis in the desert.

    Drawing, painting and clay modeling activities can be combined with “Annie stories” where children sculpt or draw scenes from the stories or their characters. Art classes are a great opportunity for children to express or reproduce what worries them. Children, for example, often draw a “monster” that frightens and disturbs them, and then tear it to shreds with obvious glee. Thus, they symbolically deal with the monster and demonstrate their victory over him.

    Stories and psychotherapy

    The healing effect of stories on children is recognized by physicians of various schools and persuasions. Their use is recommended by experts in psychoanalysis and behavior therapy.

    Psychoanalysts note the beneficialness of the process of identification, identification of the listener with the lucky hero in the story. They recognize the cathartic effect of the child’s “safe” acknowledgment of repressed feelings and emotions by observing them in a fictional, imaginary “alter ego”.

    Behavioral practitioners will certainly appreciate storytelling as an effective way to apply social modeling techniques. Stories can also offer you fun ways to teach behavioral patterns, such as desensitization, as discussed in Chapter 7.

    Educators have used stories in school situations. Just as with the individual child, they allowed the class to discuss difficult and sensitive topics in a “safe” way.

    Doctors also used stories as a means to establish contact with children. After the “Annie stories” seminar, one of the participants, a doctor by profession, told me about her patient. The girl was taken into the care of a dysfunctional family, where she was treated very badly. She withdrew into herself, was silent and uncommunicative and remained so during several weeks of treatment, until the doctor in charge came up with the idea to tell her a story. The story was about a worm that lived in a rotten apple and was then forced to move to another dwelling. The girl literally came to life during the story. For the first time in her treatment, she was able to elicit an emotional response, and this was the beginning of a breakthrough in her relationship with the doctor.

    For children whose problems appear to be particularly serious, medical advice is recommended.
