8 simple tricks that will make the neck visually longer

Brigitte Macron

Among the anatomical features of the figure, there are those that, in fact, are not flaws at all, but are considered by the public to be flaws due to the influence of trends and stereotypes, which, moreover, actively fueled by poets, artists and (to be honest) journalists. The most common targets are small eyes, thin lips and a short neck. About the latter – a special conversation. There has long been a myth in the beauty industry that a long neck is good, and a short one is bad. Why is not clear, but the very fact of the “lack of a neck” among public figures often becomes an object of ridicule and gossip. Now most often goes to the first lady of France Brigitte Macron and American actress Chloe Moretz. Both indeed have relatively short necks and straight broad shoulders, which only exacerbate the situation. But both eventually learned to masterfully cope with the problem, and now they are teaching us. We talk about a few simple tricks that can visually lengthen the neck.

Short hair

Chloe Moretz, 2014

Chloe Moretz, 2010

Do you feel like your neck is not long enough? You can try shortening your hair! If haircuts “under the boy” are too radical an option for you, then a bob will also perfectly cope with the task of lengthening the neck, including elongated strands near the face. In any case, it’s definitely not worth hiding an imaginary “flaw” under the hair. Brigitte Macron, for example, chose her perfect bob haircut as a teenager, and Chloe Moretz decided to change in 2010 – and it was really a coup.

Ponytail and high bun

Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz

If parting with your hair is not in your plans, try to make a high hairstyle. Both a careless bun and an original styling with gathered hair will perfectly cope with the task, which will also divert attention from the neck. A high ponytail, however, is also suitable: just look how Chloe Moretz made it, and how it (along with the “correct” neckline, of course) lengthened her neck.

V-neckline

Brigitte Macron

Brigitte Macron

The classic V-neckline will also help visually correct the problem area. Look for everything you usually wear with him: T-shirts, jumpers, dresses. The same effect can be achieved if you do not fasten the top two buttons of a blouse or shirt. The secret is that this shape of the neckline visually lengthens the neck, creating a visual illusion (for how to do a similar trick with your own figure, read the material “Visual illusions in clothes: how to look a couple of sizes slimmer”).

Turn-down collar

However, more than one neckline can “fix” a short neck – turn-down collars will also come to the rescue. Do not fasten shirts and blouses to the end: a pair of buttons unbuttoned at the collar will also create the desired effect and will work no worse than a deep neckline.

Long necklaces and chains

Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz

Another life hack that will stretch your neck is long necklaces, beads and chains. A few strands of pearls, ethnic-inspired jewelry, pendants, pendants, and everything that is in abundance in jewelry stores and jewelry lines will do the job perfectly. A long decoration works on the same principle as a V-neck paired with a turn-down collar – they visually lengthen the upper part, and the previously popular chokers, on the contrary, visually shorten even the most swan neck.

Remove the scarf (or tie it properly)

Brigitte Macron

Brigitte Macron

The easiest and most effective way to visually lengthen the neck is to simply get rid of the scarf. Of course, not in winter: your health is much more important than the pursuit of an imaginary ideal of beauty. In spring and warm autumn, tie your favorite scarf around the handle of the bag, and in the cold season, when you can’t do without a muffler, look at lighter options for scarves and shawls, without wrapping yourself in tight rows of large-knit fabric or knitwear. Remember that visually your neck will start from the bottom of the scarf, and the lower it is, the longer your neck will appear.

Pastel shades

Brigitte Macron

Brigitte Macron

Among the wide palette of pastel shades – from light beige to caramel blue – it is easy to find the one that really suits you. However, if dessert shades are not your favorite range, you should not despair: pay attention to the bleached versions of colors that are already familiar to you. Deep dark colors can serve as an anti-example here: look how warm peach hue lengthened Brigitte’s neck and how black “stole” her.

elongated earrings

Chloe Motz

Chloe

It is better to refuse large accent earrings – no matter how fashionable and relevant the statement earrings are, too massive and catchy options will make the distance from the ears to the shoulders even less and only attract the unceasion attention. But elongated earrings – for example, drop earrings, threads or thin chains – will cope with our task with a bang.

We share with you how to wear a scarf to look stylish and elegant.

Content of article

If two thousand years ago a scarf was tied solely to protect against the cold, today this universal accessory gives a lot of opportunities to change your image. It looks appropriate with almost any outfit and harmonizes with different styles. Read about how to tie a scarf beautifully in our material.

Types of scarves

Becoming an integral part of every woman’s wardrobe, this practical accessory has managed to add to the list of all-season items. A scarf is worn in the cold and warm season, complementing the bow or focusing on it. But these garments differ not only in seasonality, but also in shape, length and material of manufacture. Before you learn how to tie a scarf beautifully, we offer you to get acquainted with its varieties.

Stole

ADVERTISING – CONTINUED BELOW

The cape, at least half a meter wide and over two meters long, won the hearts of fashionistas, who received products with fur, fringe, ruffles, patterns and lace from the designers. This scarf can be tied on the head or left on the shoulders, neck and even the waist. To create an elegant look, girls pin up the stole with a brooch or pin.

Shawl

Literally, the name of this item is translated from Persian sal as “a blanket made of woolen fabric”. The production of the first shawls began in the 15th century in Kashmir, in northwestern India. For centuries, goats were bred there with the most delicate wool, from which the thinnest bedspreads were woven. You will be surprised, but in those days men knew how to tie scarves! Yes, the shawl was an item of men’s clothing.

Later in France, it was popularized by Napoleon’s first wife, Josephine Beauharnais, whose collection included about 400 shawls, each of which could be threaded through a gold ring. We willingly believe that she knew how beautifully to tie a scarf not only around her neck. The Empress wore shawls on her dresses, used them as a bedspread, and even made a bed for her dog.

Snood

Once breaking into our wardrobe, a round scarf has not left it for several decades. The history of the thing began with a headband made of nets and ribbons, which was used to decorate complex hairstyles. Over the years, the product has been transformed, and soon the comfortable, warm and practical collar became the favorite of many girls. It is ideal for wearing on top of jackets, coats and sheepskin coats. And snood will be a great solution and a worthy replacement for a headdress if you don’t like hats. And it’s not at all necessary to know how to beautifully tie a scarf with it – its ends are already sewn.

Arafatka

This product is mainly worn by Arba men. It owes its name to the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who spoke from TV screens in an intricately tied headscarf covering his head, and its origin is keffiyeh. Cotton is more common in this shawl with a supportive hoop, but there are also woolen keffiyeh and with the addition of synthetic fabrics. The convenience and practicality of the accessory was appreciated not only by residents of the Arab countries, who save their faces from the hot sun and sandstorms, but also by fashion fans.

Kerchief

When the kerchief migrated from the national headdress of many peoples to a modern stylish accessory, one can no longer remember. Nowadays, a piece of fabric in the shape of an isosceles triangle has spread throughout the world, and a woman has long known how to tie this airy, almost weightless scarf around her neck, weave it into her hair and tie it on her handbag. With a luxurious selection of colors and patterns, you can create many looks!

Baktus

Before us is another kind of triangular scarf designed to protect the neck and chest from cold wind and cold. He came to us from the national costume of Norway, where they know how to beautifully tie a scarf both over clothes and under it, depending on the presence of a collar and hood. Most often, an elegant accessory is knitted or crocheted by hand. By the way, the thing can be found in women’s, men’s and children’s wardrobes.

Skeiche

Introducing the combination of a classic scarf and a stand-up collar with button or zip fastening. Original, practical and no need to worry about how beautifully to tie such a collar scarf. It is enough to fasten a zipper or buttons to keep your neck warm. But it can also be worn unbuttoned, simply folded over the chest, over and under outerwear, and even with another tied scarf.

Boa

This is the name of a fur strip or whole skin of a small furry animal, lying on the shoulders of ladies and giving chic to the image. This accessory was popular at the beginning of the last century. It can be worn not only with a coat or leather jacket, but also combined with evening dresses, a sweater and a turtleneck to make the look richer and more expressive. A great addition to any style of clothing other than sportswear, and there is no need to guess how to tie such a scarf beautifully. It is luxurious in itself!

Pareo

A light beach cape made of thin fabric has also joined the ranks of scarves for a long time. A flowing scarf of various colors is sewn from linen, silk, chiffon and cotton. Often the product is decorated with an eye-catching pattern. Pareo not only looks aesthetically pleasing, but also protects the skin from the hot sun and hides figure flaws. The scarf can be beautifully tied both on the head and transformed into a skirt, top and stylish sundress.

Poncho

A rectangular piece of fabric with a hole in the center for the head was once a traditional Latin American garment. And today, a scarf and a poncho in one bottle will be a good find for creating an image and giving the image completeness and nobility. Designers offer a wide range of wraps for shoulders – from warm versions with necklines to spring ones with a touch of sophistication and summer ones with decor. You can wear such a scarf both over a sweater and with an elegant knitted dress. The outfit will become more solid and feminine.

Ways to tie a scarf: 20 ways with photos and videos

No matter how many scarves you have in your wardrobe, just one can freshen up your look with a little imagination and wearing it in different ways. Here are interesting ways to tie a scarf with examples of photos and videos to create the right accents and interesting outfits.

1. How to tie a bandana-style scarf

This method is a great option for those who like neat outfits without bulky details. Only a large scarf can be beautifully tied around the neck like a bandana. We fold it into a triangle, circle both ends around the neck and connect them.

2. How to make a scarf poncho

3. How to tie a scarf with a collar

Why do you need a turtleneck when you can tie a soft scarf or scarf around your neck with a high collar. The technique is as simple as possible: put a scarf on your shoulders, leaving a long end on one side. Then we make 2-3 turns around the neck, connect the two ends into a knot and hide it. Here is an option for you how to beautifully tie a scarf on top of a coat or other feminine outerwear without a hood.

6. How to tie a star loop

If you are not afraid to mix different styles, here is a hint on how to tie a black scarf over a leather jacket of the same color. The rebellious outfit allows a little liberties – we choose the so-called star loop. At the first stage, we throw a scarf over the shoulder and make one turn to make a loop in front. Then we pass both ends through it inward.

7. How to quickly tie a snood scarf

You can buy a ready-made snood, but it’s easier to make it yourself at home from an ordinary scarf. It is not difficult to transform a long scarf into an “infinite” one. First, you should tie the ends in a knot, then put on an almost folded snood over a coat or jacket and wrap it around your neck several times. Now you know how to tie a scarf beautifully and use it as a detachable hood.

8. How to tie a large scarf in the shape of a butterfly

If the usual methods of tying scarves do not work, pay attention to the unusual “butterfly”. Fortunately, in the morning before leaving the house, you won’t have to deal with the equipment for a long time. We take a long product, fold it in half, wrap it around the neck and insert the end into the loop. Then the most interesting thing is to tie the ends of the scarf on the inside with a neat knot. We put it on the neck and straighten the ends on the shoulders. Voila – the final touch completed your image.

10. How to tie a sling scarf

A scarf can be useful not only for fashionable looks, but also for functional devices. An ordinary accessory can be easily transformed into a comfortable sling. But it is important to tie the scarf correctly so as not to harm either the child or yourself. For a sling, you will need a long and wide scarf, and we will teach you how to tie it beautifully.

Find the middle and apply it to the lower back. We bring the ends forward and in turn throw each over the opposite shoulder. We repeat the same thing from behind, then we draw the ends of the scarf through the loops at the waist and tie the tails into one knot. We complete the sling – we adjust the space in front so that the child can easily fit there. The baby should not sag or dangle.

11. How to tie a turban

A scarf can be an excellent replacement for a trendy headdress – a hat, beret or balaclava. There are plenty of stylish ways to tie a scarf or shawl on your head that are worth trying on in the fall. For example, the original turban will perfectly complement the look with a classic coat and massive boots.

To do this, we wrap the head with a long scarf, pass it on the back of the head over the hair. Important: the ends should remain in front, and the ears should only be half closed. We connect the ends with a knot in front and hide it under the layers of fabric – the classic of the 70s is ready.

12. Scarf knots

Take an accessory of any length, the thickness doesn’t matter either. Throw the product around your neck, take it at chest level and make a not too big loop. Pass the ends through the window – you managed to tie a scarf simply and stylishly. If you wrap an accessory folded in half around your neck and pass both ends into one loop, you will get a Parisian knot.

Triple scarf pendant

A thin accessory, preferably very long, will help to realize the idea, and if it also has a fringe, it will give the image a special charm. Wrap an item of any length and width around the neck so that there is a loop in the front. Pass one end through it outward, but do not pull it out. Pass the second end of the product into this second loop. People around you will probably be interested in how you managed to tie an ordinary scarf so beautifully. If you have a buckle, doing the trick will be even easier.

17. How to tie a scarf in the form of a double collar

You have already figured out how to make a snood yourself. We suggest expanding your skills and tying a scarf so that you get a contrasting collar. Take two thin products of different colors – the length is not important. Tie them on both sides with a double knot and wrap the resulting ring around the neck several times. Hide the knots under the fabric.

18. Tie-like scarf

Throw the product around your neck and fold one half of the scarf behind the other. Pass it through the resulting loop from the outside to the inside and align the knot. If you are tying a scarf for a woman, then it is better to leave the knot at chest level.

I give so much credit to her teachers Ms. Makia and Ms. Jessica, both of whom she adores. They have gone above and beyond to make sure she is ready for kindergarten next school year and have even gone above and beyond by teaching her colors and numbers up to 20 in Spanish! More than 40% of all employees were thinking about leaving their jobs at the beginning of 2021, and as the year went on, workers quit in unprecedented numbers.1 Between April and September 2021, more than 24 million American employees left their jobs, an all-time record. 2 As the Great Resignation rolls on, business leaders are struggling to make sense of the factors driving the mass exodus. More importantly, they are looking for ways to hold on to valued employees.

To better understand the sources of the Great Resignation and help leaders respond effectively, we analyzed 34 million online employee profiles to identify U.S. workers who left their employer for any reason (including quitting, retiring, or being laid off) between April and September 2021.3 The data, from Revelio Labs, where one of us (Ben) is the CEO, enabled us to estimate company-level attrition rates for the Culture 500, a sample of large, mainly for-profit companies that together employ nearly one-quarter of the private-sector workforce in the United States.4

While resignation rates are high on average, they are not uniform across companies. Attrition rates for the six months we studied ranged from less than 2% to more than 30% across companies. Industry explains part of this variation. The graph below shows the estimated attrition rate for 38 industries from April through September, and the spread across industries is striking. (See “Industry Average Attrition Rate in the Great Resignation.”) Apparel retailers, on average, lost employees at three times the rate of airlines, medical device makers, and health insurers.

Industry Average Attrition Rate in the Great Resignation

This chart shows the average attrition rate across 38 industries from April through September 2021. The industries with the highest percentage of blue-collar workers are noted in light blue.

The Great Resignation is affecting blue-collar and white-collar sectors with equal force. Some of the hardest hit industries — apparel retail, fast food, and specialty retail — employ the highest percentage of blue-collar workers among all industries we studied. Management consulting, in contrast, had the second-highest attrition rate but also employs the largest percentage of white-collar professionals of any Culture 500 industry. Enterprise software, which also suffered high churn, employs the highest percentage of engineering and technical employees.

Industry explains some of the variation in attrition rates across companies but not all of it. Even within the same industry, we observed significant differences in attrition rates. The figure below compares competitors with high and low attrition rates within their industries. (See “How Culture 500 Company Attrition Rates Compare Within Industries.”) Workers are 3.8 times more likely to leave Tesla than Ford, for example, and more than twice as likely to quit JetBlue than Southwest Airlines.

How Culture 500 Company Attrition Rates Compare Within Industries

During the Great Resignation, companies within the same industry have experienced varying degrees of attrition.

Not surprisingly, companies with a reputation for a healthy culture, including Southwest Airlines, Johnson & Johnson, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and LinkedIn, experienced lower-than-average turnover during the first six months of the Great Resignation.

Although the sample is small, these pairs hint at another, more intriguing pattern. More-innovative companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, Nvidia, and Netflix, are experiencing higher attrition rates than their more staid competitors. The pattern is not limited to technology-intensive industries, since innovative companies like Goldman Sachs and Red Bull have suffered higher turnover as well.

To dig deeper into the drivers of intra-industry turnover, we calculated how each Culture 500 company’s attrition rate compared with the average of its industry as a whole. This measure, which we call industry-adjusted attrition, translates each company’s attrition rate into standard deviations above or below the average for its industry.5

We also analyzed the free text of more than 1.4 million Glassdoor reviews, using the Natural Employee Language Understanding platform developed by CultureX, a company two of us (Donald and Charles) cofounded. For each Culture 500 company, we measured how frequently employees mentioned 172 topics and how positively they talked about each topic. We then analyzed which topics best predicted a company’s industry-adjusted attrition rate.

Top Predictors of Employee Turnover During the Great Resignation

Much of the media discussion about the Great Resignation has focused on employee dissatisfaction with wages. How frequently and positively employees mentioned compensation, however, ranks 16th among all topics in terms of predicting employee turnover. This result is consistent with a large body of evidence that pay has only a moderate impact on employee turnover.6 (Compensation can, however, be an important predictor of attrition in certain settings, such as nurses in large health care systems).

In general, corporate culture is a much more reliable predictor of industry-adjusted attrition than how employees assess their compensation. The figure below displays the five predictors of relative attrition. (See “Top Predictors of Attrition During Great Resignation.”) To give a sense of their relative importance, we’ve benchmarked each element relative to the predictive power of compensation. 7 A toxic corporate culture, for example, is 10.4 times more powerful than compensation in predicting a company’s attrition rate compared with its industry.

Top Predictors of Attrition During the Great Resignation

The authors analyzed the impact of more than 170 cultural topics on employee attrition in Culture 500 companies from April through September 2021. These five topics were the leading predictors of attrition. Each bar indicates the level of importance of each topic for attrition relative to employee compensation. A toxic culture is 10.4 times more likely to contribute to attrition than compensation.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the top five predictors of employee turnover.

Toxic corporate culture. A toxic corporate culture is by far the strongest predictor of industry-adjusted attrition and is 10 times more important than compensation in predicting turnover. Our analysis found that the leading elements contributing to toxic cultures include failure to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion; workers feeling disrespected; and unethical behavior. In an upcoming article, we will dive deeper into each of these factors and examine different ways managers and employees can spot signals of toxic culture.8 For now, the important point is that a toxic culture is the biggest factor pushing employees out the door during the Great Resignation.

Job insecurity and reorganization. In a previous article, we reported that job insecurity and reorganizations are important predictors of how employees rate a company’s overall culture. So it’s not surprising that employment instability and restructurings influence employee turnover.9 Managers frequently resort to layoffs and reorganizations when their company’s prospects are bleak. Previous research has found that employees’ negative assessments of their company’s future outlook is a strong predictor of attrition.10 When a company is struggling, employees are more likely to jump ship in search of more job security and professional opportunities. Past layoffs, moreover, typically leave surviving employees with heavier workloads, which may increase their odds of leaving.

Another reason job insecurity could predict turnover is related to our measure of employee attrition, which incorporates job changes for all causes — including layoffs and involuntary terminations. We would expect frequent mentions of reorganizations and layoffs to predict involuntary turnover. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, however, involuntary separations have accounted for less than one-quarter of all employee exits among large companies during the Great Resignation.11 So it’s likely that poor career prospects and job insecurity contributed significantly to employees leaving on their own accord as well.

High levels of innovation. It’s not surprising that workers leave companies with toxic cultures or frequent layoffs. But it is surprising that employees are more likely to exit from innovative companies. In the Culture 500 sample, we found that the more positively employees talked about innovation at their company, the more likely they were to quit. The attrition rates of the three most innovative Culture 500 companies — Nvidia, Tesla, and SpaceX — are three standard deviations higher than those in their respective industries.

Staying at the bleeding edge of innovation typically requires employees to put in longer hours, work at a faster pace, and endure more stress than they would in a slower-moving company. The work may be exciting and satisfying but also difficult to sustain in the long term. When employees rate their company’s innovation positively, they are more likely to speak negatively about work-life balance and a manageable workload. During the Great Resignation, employees may be reconsidering the personal toll that relentless innovation takes.

Failure to recognize performance. Employees are more likely to leave companies that fail to distinguish between high performers and laggards when it comes to recognition and rewards. Companies that fail to recognize and reward strong performers have higher rates of attrition, and the same is true for employers that tolerate underperformance. The issue is not compensation below market rates, but rather recognition — both informal and financial — that is not linked to effort and results. High-performing employees are the most likely to resent a lack of recognition for their results, which means that companies may be losing some of their most productive workers during the Great Resignation.

Poor response to COVID-19. Employees who mentioned COVID-19 more frequently in their reviews or talked about their company’s response to the pandemic in negative terms were more likely to quit. The same pattern holds true when employees talk more generally about their company’s policies for protecting their health and well-being.

    Short-Term Actions to Boost Retention

The powerful predictors of attrition listed above are not easy to change. A weak future outlook that spurs restructuring and layoffs may be difficult to reverse; it is too late to fix a poor response to the pandemic; and a toxic corporate culture cannot be improved overnight. Relentless innovation provides companies like Tesla or Nvidia with a competitive advantage, so they must find ways to retain employees without sacrificing their innovation edge.

Our analysis identified four actions that managers can take in the short term to reduce attrition. (See “Short-Term Steps for Companies to Increase Retention.”) As in the graph above, each bar represents the topic’s predictive power relative to compensation. This time, the topics predict a company’s ability to retain employees compared with industry peers. Providing employees with lateral career opportunities, for example, is 2.5 times more powerful as a predictor of a company’s relative retention rate compared with compensation.

Short-Term Steps for Companies to Increase Retention

These four topics were the leading predictors of employee retention for Culture 500 companies from April through September 2021. Each bar indicates the level of importance of a topic for employee retention relative to compensation. Offering lateral job opportunities for employees, for example, is 2.5 times more predictive of retention than compensation.

Provide opportunities for lateral job moves. Not all employees want to climb the corporate ladder or take on additional work or responsibilities. Many workers simply want a change of pace or the opportunity to try something new. When employees talk positively about lateral opportunities — new jobs offering fresh challenges without a promotion — they are less likely to quit. Lateral career opportunities are 12 times more predictive of employee retention than promotions. We observed the same pattern in multinationals: The more frequently employees discussed the possibility of international postings, the more likely they were to stick with their current employer.

Sponsor corporate social events. Company-organized social events, including happy hours, team-building excursions, potluck dinners, and other activities outside the workplace are a key element of a healthy corporate culture, so it’s no surprise that they are also associated with higher rates of retention. 12 Organizing fun social events is a low-cost way to reinforce corporate culture as employees return to the office, and it strengthens employees’ personal connections to their team members.

Offer remote work options. Much of the media coverage of the Great Resignation has focused on the importance of remote work in retaining employees. Unsurprisingly, when employees discussed remote work options in more positive terms, they were less likely to quit. What you might not have expected is the relatively modest impact of remote work on retention — just a bit more powerful than compensation in predicting lower attrition. Remote work options may have a modest effect on employee turnover because most companies in an industry converge on similar policies. If companies cannot differentiate themselves based on remote work options, they may need to look elsewhere — providing lateral job opportunities, for instance, or making schedules more predictable — to retain employees.

Make schedules more predictable for front-line employees. When blue-collar employees describe their schedules as predictable, they are less likely to quit. Having a predictable schedule is six times more powerful in predicting front-line employee retention than having a flexible schedule. (A predictable schedule has no predictive power for white-collar employees.)

This finding is consistent with a study of 28 Gap stores, in which employees at randomly-assigned locations received their work schedules two weeks in advance, and their managers were barred from canceling their shifts at the last minute. Employees in the control stores were subject to the usual scheduling practices.13 The stores with predictable schedules increased retention among their most experienced associates. Compared with the workers at the control stores, the employees with fixed schedules had a 7% improvement in their quality of sleep. The benefits were especially pronounced for workers with children, who reported a 15% reduction in stress.

Much of the media coverage of the Great Resignation focuses on high turnover among burned-out knowledge workers who are dissatisfied with their stagnant wages. Our findings are broadly consistent with this narrative. Industries that employ large numbers of professional and technical employees, like management consulting and enterprise software, have experienced high turnover. We found indirect evidence that burnout may contribute to higher levels of attrition among companies that excel at innovation. It’s worth noting, however, that our direct measures of burnout, workload, and work-life balance do not emerge as key predictors of industry-adjusted turnover.

The simplistic narrative of white-collar burnout misses other critical realities of the Great Resignation. Our findings reinforce recent government statistics showing that blue-collar intensive industries like retail and fast food are experiencing unprecedented levels of attrition.14

More fundamentally, we found that corporate culture is more important than burnout or compensation in predicting which companies lost employees at a higher rate than their industries as a whole. A toxic corporate culture is the single best predictor of which companies suffered from high attrition in the first six months of the Great Resignation. The failure to appreciate high performers, through formal and informal recognition, is another element of culture that predicts attrition. A failure to recognize performance is likely to drive out a company’s most productive employees. This is not to argue that compensation and burnout don’t influence attrition — of course they do. The important point is that other aspects of culture appear to matter even more.

Our research identified four steps — offering lateral career opportunities, remote work, social events, and more predictable schedules — that may boost retention in the short term. Leaders who are serious about winning the war for talent during the Great Resignation and beyond, however, must do more. They should understand and address the elements of their culture that are causing employees to disengage and leave. And above all else, they must root out issues that contribute to a toxic culture. Our next article will explore, empirically, what constitutes a toxic culture and how organizations can address this challenge.

    3. To test the accuracy of our estimates of employee attrition, we compared them with the November U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for total separations (including employee resignations, layoffs, and other sources of job separations) for private companies with more than 5,000 employees. The BLS total separation rate was 10.8% for April through September 2021, and our estimates were 10.1% for the same period.

    4. To estimate turnover at the company level, we identified all job transitions where a user left their current employer for any reason, including quitting, retiring, or being laid off, and divided these by corporate head count. Job transitions were measured for April through September 2021 for 538 Culture 500 companies. The attrition rates are adjusted for sampling bias related to who has an online profile and for lags in when users reported transitions on their profiles. To test the robustness of our estimates of attrition, we separately estimated the hiring rate for each company for the same period. Hiring rate is defined as employees who joined the company divided by corporate head count. We would expect hiring and attrition rates to be correlated, as companies replace employees who leave. The Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.81 between the hiring and attrition rates.

    5. We assigned each Culture 500 company to a primary industry and calculated how many standard deviations the focal company’s attrition rate was above or below the industry mean. We used the resulting industry-normalized attrition rate as the dependent variable in our subsequent models. To identify which factors were most important in predicting each company’s normalized attrition rate, we used an XGBoost model and calculated the SHAP (Shapley additive explanations) value for 172 topics measured by the CultureX Natural Employee Language Understanding platform. The SHAP value approach analyzes all possible combinations of features in a predictive model to estimate the marginal impact that each feature has on the outcome — in our case, which cultural elements have the biggest impact in predicting a company’s industry-normalized attrition rate. Negative job review or workplace incident? How to fix it and move forward with confidence

It’s performance review time right around now for millions of workers and employees in America.

If you receive a poor job performance review or are called on the carpet for missing an important deadline — or if you experience a negative incident at work, such as getting caught bad-mouthing your boss — you may lose your confidence at work.

You may also wonder if you can ever shake off the criticism or worry the incident may have engendered.

GEN Z CALLS OUT BABY BOOMERS FOR ‘ANNOYING’ WORKPLACE HABITS: SURVEY

Some human resources experts weighed in on how to work through these feelings — and on how to turn the corner toward more positive work and career achievements.

    Here’s what to know.

How to become more confident after a poor job review

No employee ever wants to receive a poor job review.

However, nearly all professionals will receive constructive feedback at some point in their career, noted Niki Jorgensen, director of service operations at Insperity in Denver, Colorado.

Human resources experts offered keen insight into how to work through a difficult performance review or errors on the job — and on how to turn the corner toward far more positive career achievements.  (iStock / iStock)

A few considerations can help employees move forward, she said.

    1. Keep a good perspective. “A job review trending toward the negative does not necessarily mean an employee’s job is at risk or even that the person is underperforming,” Jorgensen told Fox Business.

‘SOFT SKILLS’ ARE CRITICAL TODAY. HERE’S WHY JOB RECRUITERS VALUE THEM SO MUCH

Unless the person is put on a performance improvement plan or is given an ultimatum by the manager or department head, the individual’s performance may meet expectations even if there’s room for growth, she said.

    2. Remember that performance reviews are to help you grow. It is a manager’s job to help employees grow — so a job review may point out an employee’s strengths but also focus mostly on areas of needed improvement.

“A job review trending toward the negative does not necessarily mean an employee’s job is at risk or even that the person is underperforming,” said one human resources professional.  (iStock / iStock)

“If a job review only addresses an employee’s successes, then that employee might never know about their weaknesses,” said Jorgensen.

    3. Be sure not to exaggerate the negative. Every employee will define a “poor” job review differently, noted Jorgensen.

“For perfectionists, a single instance of criticism may make a review feel like a disaster,” she said.

“In reality, it is normal for job reviews to include a mixture of both negative and positive feedback.”

How to bounce back from unintentional mistakes or poor discipline

Some mistakes are more consequential than others.

“It is normal for job reviews to include a mixture of both negative and positive feedback.”

Some errors on the job may be truly unintentional — such as misunderstanding an assignment or a deadline.

CAREER CHALLENGE: HERE ARE THE SMARTEST WAYS TO TRANSITION SMOOTHLY TO A NEW MANAGER

Others, however, may reflect poor discipline or a lack of skills, such as failing to check for errors in an important report, said Jorgensen.

“When an employee’s mistakes involve poor character, such as gossiping or lying, that is often more concerning for an employer than a mistake in the work product,” Jorgensen told Fox Business.

“Employers who offer a second chance after a mistake do so because they want to believe in an employee’s success,” one workplace expert said. (iStock / iStock)

With that in mind, if a mistake does not result in an employee’s termination, the best choice is to take accountability and move on, she said.

“Employers who offer a second chance after a mistake do so because they want to believe in an employee’s success,” Jorgensen said.

How to build confidence in practical ways

Building confidence after a work-related mistake may seem challenging.

There are strategies that you can incorporate, however, to feel better about your abilities and self-image at work.

Gather the details. When given a project, always communicate with your manager about the task at hand, said Randi Weitzman, an executive director at Robert Half in Sacramento, California.

CAREER CHALLENGE: HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN A SIX-MONTH GAP (OR MORE) ON YOUR RESUME?

Showcase your accomplishments. Use the feedback from your less-than-favorable job review as a way to improve and learn from it.

Always ask questions and prepare for additional feedback. “It will help you grow as a professional,” said one hiring and human resources professional.  (iStock / iStock)

“Don’t be afraid to showcase how you were able to work around a mistake or overcome a bad review,” said Weitzman.

Boost your communications. Always ask questions and prepare for additional feedback, said Weitzman.

“It will help you grow as a professional,” she said.

CAREER CHALLENGE: WHAT IF YOUR BOSS FINDS OUT YOU’RE JOB-HUNTING?

Update your goals. Be open about your goals and what you hope to achieve.

This will give you a clearer path and discussion points for your manager during a future performance review, Weitzman advised.

“Also, follow through and regularly review the goals you’ve established and keep your supervisor posted on your progress,” Weitzman told Fox Business.

    6. Depending on the characteristics of the work performed, the working posture of an employee in the “sitting” position is more comfortable than the working posture in the “standing” position. If the main working posture of the employee is the “standing” position, the organization of the workplace should provide the opportunity to change the main working posture to the “sitting” position, including by arranging a seat.

    7. Comfortable working posture of the employee in the “sitting” position is achieved by adjusting the relative position of the seat and the work surface, including its height and dimensions, as well as the height and angle of inclination of the footrest when it is used.

If it is not possible to provide the above regulation of the working posture, it is allowed to use a workplace with unregulated parameters. In this case, the height of the working surface is set in accordance with the state requirements for labor protection, based on the characteristics of the work, the requirements for ensuring the required accuracy of actions during its implementation and monitoring its implementation, the average height of workers (men – if only men work, women – if only women work, and men and women separately if both men and women work).

) machines, equipment, tools and devices.

    9. When organizing a workplace (work area), the stable position and freedom of movement of the employee employed on it, the ability to control activities and the safety of performing labor operations, subject to compliance with state labor protection requirements, must be ensured.

    10. When organizing a workplace (working area), it must be excluded, and in case of impossibility of exclusion due to the peculiarities of the organization of the production process, the duration of the work performance in uncomfortable working postures causing increased fatigue <2> associated with an inclination or body rotation, with arms raised above shoulder level, with uncomfortable (cramped) placement of the legs, with the need to keep the arms suspended, with the location of the controls or working surfaces of the equipment outside the maximum reach of the employee’s hands, or with the presence in the employee’s field of vision of objects that impede observation behind a serviced object or process, as well as in forced working positions <3> in the “lying”, “kneeling”, “squatting” positions.

    11. When organizing a workplace (work area), it is necessary to provide an overview of the observation from the place of work, ensuring the perception of visual means of displaying information and safety signs.

    12. Means of displaying information must take into account the frequency and significance of incoming information, the type of means of displaying information, the accuracy and speed of tracking and reading, and be located in areas that ensure the perception of information contained in the display means.

    13. Visual means of displaying information must have lighting that ensures the perception of the displayed information from the place of work.

    14. Placement of controls for machines and equipment at the workplace (in the working area) must ensure compliance with state labor protection requirements, including taking into account the working posture of the employee, the functional purpose of the control, frequency of use, sequence of use, functional connection with the appropriate means information display.

    15. The distance between the controls of machines and equipment must exclude the possibility of arbitrary change in the position of an unused control when manipulating another adjacent control.

    16. Machines, mechanisms, production equipment that are a source of injury hazard, in accordance with the requirements of technical regulations, must be equipped with protective fences and interlocks that exclude the operation of the equipment when the protective fence is removed, when a person or parts of his body is in the area of work of traumatic parts and assemblies , the operation of such machines, mechanisms, production equipment must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of technical (operational) documentation and in compliance with state labor protection requirements.

    17. Areas and zones where the employer, based on the results of his occupational risk assessment, determined a high probability of injury to employees, must be marked with signal markings and / or safety signs, taking into account state labor protection requirements.

    18. The use of safety signs and signal markings is supplemented by informing the employee by all means available to the employer, provided for by the labor protection management system, in order to prevent or reduce the impact on employees of harmful and (or) dangerous production factors in the course of their labor activity.

    19. The workplace (working area), when carrying out work on lifting and moving people and goods, is equipped with auxiliary lifting and transport equipment (tools), taking into account state labor protection requirements.

    20. When organizing workplaces, their relative position and layout should ensure safe access of employees employed at them to each workplace and the possibility of quick evacuation of workers in the event of an emergency or other emergency in accordance with state labor protection requirements. Escape routes and passages must be free for movement, marked with appropriate signs and have lighting that ensures their perception.

    Driver’s seat and overview

Professional drivers and athletes know that getting ready to drive starts with the seat. Why is it so important? Masters of the ASport Driving Academy answer this question in this way: you can feel the difference while driving, at speed. A proper seating position gives the driver the opportunity to fully experience the behavior of the car on the track, evaluate the forces acting on it, and more accurately work with the car’s controls.

What is the most important thing to pay attention to when driving

The main condition for a correct seating position is that the entire back of the driver, up to the coccyx, fits against the back of the seat. This factor is often underestimated, especially by those who studied on domestic cars that were not too adapted for this. Through the back of the car, the driver can get up to 70% of the information.

The driver’s gaze is directed to the road and the instruments, which do not show much useful information. But a lot of data is received and processed by the driver unconsciously – through hearing, smell, tactile sensations.

Tactile sensations come from the vibration of the handlebars placed on the floor or foot pedal. But best of all, the driver receives information about the behavior of the car, existing overloads and movement through the tightly pressed back of the seat.

Also, do not forget about fatigue on the road. With the right fit, good health lasts much longer, this directly affects the reaction, and ultimately – driving safety.

Although it must be admitted that a lot depends on the design of the chair. Moreover, the purpose of sitting in a jeep and a racing car are different. Although a good seat is expensive, it allows you to fully use all the capabilities of the machine laid down by the instructors.

    Types of seat adjustment

When preparing the chair, it is necessary to make the following adjustments to its position:

    • longitudinal stroke, which determines the distance to the pedals;
    • Seat tilt, providing distance to the steering wheel and gearshift lever, on machines with mechanics;
    • adjustment of head restraints, insuring against injury;
    • seat belt fitting.

    Seat fore/aft travel

This is one of the most important adjustments needed to set the correct pedal distance. First, you should calculate the farthest point for the leg – the clutch pedal (gas) stop. Adjustment is carried out in this way: by moving the seat, achieve a position where the pedal is fully depressed, and the leg is not fully extended.

The pedal should be fully depressed, but the leg should not be straightened, like a stretched string, to the limit. In this position, a person is forced to reach for the clutch, experiencing excessive tension, and also strongly pressed into the seat cushion. It is very tiring to maintain this position for a long time.

On the other hand, it is recommended to keep as much distance as possible from the “torpedo” while maintaining a comfortable position. Too close landing will not allow you to rest on the floor with your left foot. And with high knees, there is still a risk of injury in an accident or sudden braking, hitting the steering column with your knees.

In the seats of some cars, you can find additional options – a retractable front, height and inclination of the cushion, and other characteristics. But all these additional settings should pursue the same goal:

    • when you press any pedal to the stop, the foot should not rest against the pillow;
    • the knees must be sufficiently far from the “torpedo”;
    • the leg must not be fully extended when working;
    • The left leg must have a full hard stop on the floor.

    Seat backrest tilt

After adjusting the longitudinal position of the seat, the backrest tilt must be adjusted. This helps to determine the distance to the steering wheel and gearshift lever.

The distance to the steering wheel must be such that the driver, leaning firmly on his back, can freely reach with outstretched arms to its upper point. The best steering is achieved with almost fully extended arms. And with high-speed control, the elbows will not beat either on the driver’s body or on the car doors.

And at the same time it is necessary that during any operation with the steering wheel the blades do not come off the back of the seat. In the same way, the optimal distance should be for working with the gearshift lever, so that when shifting gears, you do not have to take your back off the seat.

For additional adjustments, the same requirements must be met: the back is pressed against the back of the chair and does not come off from it when working with any controls – switches, buttons, levers. At the same time, the maximum distance to the steering wheel and control panel must be maintained in order to ensure its maximum visibility.

It is possible to achieve all the necessary conditions only in well-designed cars. Cheaper models of cars cannot provide an ideal position. But here, too, a compromise can be reached in order to meet the main requirements:

    • maximum visibility;
    • optimum position to handlebar;
    • Comfortable shifting of at least the first 3 gears.

Adjusting the headrests – important for safety

The headrest, despite its seemingly insignificance, is essential for safety. It is believed that its upper edge should be at the level of the upper point of the ear (eyebrow height). If it is located higher or lower, the driver is at risk of injury in a rear impact.

Those who are just starting to ride should be warned: when driving, the head should not rest on it. The headrest is an element of the passive protection system. The driver’s head must be upright and the neck muscles must not be relaxed. Otherwise, it may lead to falling asleep. And if the head is thrown back or tilted to the side, this significantly reduces the ability to assess the traffic situation and instantly respond to its change.

It should be noted that even for experienced drivers with a long experience, the landing is not always completely competent. You need to understand that the optimal driving position is not related to the tastes or preferences of the motorist. It is laid down by designers during the design of the machine and its manufacture. In jeeps, the driver’s position is close to vertical, and in sports cars, the pilot is almost lying down.

    Seat belt adjustment

In modern vehicles, it is possible to adjust the position of the upper anchorage point of the seat belts (with a three-point system). When setting up, you need to make sure that the fastened belt fits freely on the shoulder, without restricting movement. It should not slip off or irritate the neck.

Never neglect the belt! In a frontal or side collision, it will protect the chest from impact. He also, although not much, but presses the body against the back of the chair, improving contact with the seat and helping to feel the vibration of the car.

If it seems to you that the belt restricts movement when driving, remember again: the body must be stationary during any maneuvers. And if the belt “prevents” movement, reconsider your driving behavior and landing. With the right position, the problem will disappear by itself.

    Vision adjustment

After reaching the optimal position, the rear vision must be adjusted. To do this, you need to set the mirrors in the correct position.

The side windows need to be turned so that only a small fragment of your car is reflected in them, and the main space is occupied by the road. In this case, a fragment of the car must be viewed without fail so that the image is “attached” to a point in space. Then, with a cursory glance, it will immediately be clear what position relative to the machine the visible object occupies.

It is also necessary to ensure that the horizon line in all mirrors coincides as much as possible. This will provide a more convenient orientation when shifting your gaze.

Do not forget that all adjustments must be designed for the working position that the driver occupies. And if this requires moving around the cabin, then the final view must be assessed from a stationary position.

    Danger of Blind Spots

It is very important to know the location of the blind spots, which must be taken into account when manoeuvring. To do this, the driver will need the help of a partner.

When a motorist looks ahead, he also turns on peripheral vision, which covers approximately 180° of space in the front hemisphere. Ask a friend to stand in the back left so that he can be clearly seen in the mirror. And ask him to start moving to the left, away from the car. At the moment when he disappears from the mirror, signal. And then turn around and remember the sector in which it is located.

Between the area covered by peripheral vision (almost perpendicular to the car) and the area visible in the mirror is the “dead zone”. As you move away from the car, it grows, and already at a distance of a couple of meters it becomes large enough to fit a car in it.

Now remember that this is an adjacent traffic lane, in which an “invisible” car may be. And not from behind, but from the side, and it moves at the same speed as yours. When making a maneuver in this direction, it will be too late for her to slow down, and a collision will become inevitable. Therefore, each time before the maneuver it is necessary to do the usual viewing of the “dead zones”. And you need to do this with quick, short glances so as not to lose control of the situation along the way.

Such zones are very dangerous when leaving at an angle to the main road. After all, she is completely in the “invisible” sector. That is why a stop sign is installed at such intersections. But even if there is no such sign, remember to do two things at the same time:

    • take a quick look at the situation on the main road;
    • keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and control its movement: when you think that it has gone into an open road, it may suddenly stop.

Equally important is the same area to the right of the machine. Inspect it when returning to your lane after overtaking – do not discount those who like to overtake on the right and make unexpected lane changes. Also dangerous is the appearance in this sector of motorcyclists, cyclists or pedestrians, just objects when parking or when reversing.

Experienced drivers try to take into account their entry into someone else’s unobserved zone, which allows them to avoid unexpected maneuvers of a “colleague” who is unaware of your presence.

    Additional notes

When setting up a seat, it is worth considering that each person has his own physical characteristics. This is the length of the arms and legs, fullness, high or low growth. And often play a role and more complex conditions – back pain, curvature of the spine.

In such cases, a compromise must be found to ensure maximum compliance with the conditions for driving the machine:

    • comfortable distance to the pedals;
    • normal steering position;
    • free shifting.

If all these requirements cannot be met at the same time, the seat must be changed, the principle of adjustment must be changed or this type of machine should be abandoned altogether.

Our 2 and 4-year-old kids attend Guidepost Montessori 5 days a week, and we are very pleased with the professionalism, care, daily updates shared on their progress and overall good feeling that we get when we drop off and pick them up each day. Highly recommend the school!

“Guidepost has been a perfect fit”

Guidepost has been a perfect fit for our pre-schooler! The staff at Guidepost are truly amazing. The guides are compassionate, understanding, and informative. I love the app they use to provide daily updates about what my little one is learning. Since enrolling at Guidepost, my daughter’s independence has increased, she’s learned skills to more effectively express her emotions when she’s upset, and she has learned so many things! Each day on our drive home she tells me about her daily artwork, the fun playground, and the new lessons she learned. Aside from the education component, the community is phenomenal. The school has hosted multiple virtual events, including pumpkin painting and hot cocoa in October and a book fair!

“The best decision we have made”

Enrolling our daughter at Guidepost has been THE BEST decision we have made. We were nervous because she is so young and due to COVID, hadn’t been around many other children or had any experience in a school environment but the administrators and guides at Guidepost were welcoming, patient, helpful and kind. After only 3 weeks, our daughter LOVES school and can’t wait to go each morning. And we see her developing new skills in front of our eyes. We could not be happier with our experience at Guidepost!

Top 13 Non-Ivy League Schools for 2023 Prep School of Medicine

Ivy League schools are competitive and expensive. Check out our list of the best schools for non-Ivy League prep courses. The academic quality of these schools is on par with the Ivy League schools, they are affordable and have high acceptance rates.

Ivy League institutions are quite popular, if not the most popular schools in the United States, after all, their academic programs are world class and top notch. Every student dreams of being in the Ivy League, which is why thousands of students apply every year for each of them, and only a few are selected due to their rigorous admissions process.

To be eligible for the Ivy League, you need a GPA of at least 3.7 and a SAT score of 1500. Even with tough requirements, many students can still meet and send out their applications. This makes these ivy leagues very competitive and their acceptance rate is also very low, between 4% and 8%.

    [lwptoc]

What is an Ivy League school?

The Ivy League is an American collegiate athletic conference that includes eight private research universities. These schools are considered the most prestigious and elite of all US colleges, eight Ivy League schools:

    • Brown University
    • Cornell University
    • Columbia University
    • University of Dartmouth
    • Harvard University
    • Princeton University
    • University of Pennsylvania
    • Yale

Other institutions of higher education that are not yet in the Ivy League are on par with them, especially in medical programs, which is the focus of this article. Universities such as John Hopkins, Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, and many others are discussed here. Apart from the medical programs, the other academic programs offered by these non-Ivy League institutions are top notch.

Now, taking a pre-med program at one of these non-Ivy League universities won’t put you under the stress of the Ivy League, and you’ll also get a world-class pre-education to prepare you for your medical journey. You must understand that many of the best premed programs for medical school applicants are not limited to Ivy League schools.

Liberal arts universities offer some of the best degree programs in the country. Today we’re going to talk about the best non-Ivy League schools to prepare to be a doctor.

    What do preschools do?

Premed schools are institutions of higher learning in the United States that provide an educational path for undergraduate students who wish to become medical students. Pre-medical education, volunteering, clinical experience, research, and the application process are all part of the process of preparing a student for medical school.

Some pre-med programs are labeled “pre-professional” because they prepare students for different first professional degree or graduate programs with identical prerequisites (eg medical, veterinary or pharmaceutical schools).

Pre-med is a college course consisting of certain courses that you agree to take as a prerequisite for admission to medical school, even if it looks like a specialty. Students may study any discipline they wish, but in order to remain at the medical preparation level, they must complete all required medical preparation courses. Most undergraduate students specialize in a field related to medicine, such as biology or chemistry.

If you know you want to become a doctor while still in high school, look for universities that will properly prepare you for your future profession. However, keep in mind that your prior medical experience should ultimately prepare you for a higher goal: medical school. A preparatory program at an appropriate college will ensure success in the following four important components of medical school admission:

    • Good GPA
    • Getting a high MCAT score is a great way to start your career.
    • Build a solid resume and find interesting activities
    • Completing the application includes letters of recommendation, essays, and interviews, although you should note that these are largely independent of the undergraduate school you choose.

In this post, we’ve compiled a list of the best non-ivy league schools for doctor preparation. These schools are determined by factors such as acceptance rate, GPA, MCAT preparation, patient care experience, and research experience.

Sure, moms pretend to love everything their kids make them, but what they really love is the gesture and the effort. The 13 DIY gift ideas on this list are not only handmade but also things she will actually love receiving, from tote bags to gourmet goodies. They may require adult supervision (and an adult bank account) to pull off, but they are all designed to be unique offerings created just for her.

Elia Dark Chocolate & Espresso Olive Oil Cake Mix

This olive oil–infused organic cake mix is about 10 times the price of a grocery store version. But as our kitchen team vouches, it’s also about 10 times more delicious.

Yes, once you pay the $9 shipping costs, this cake will run you as much as a fancy bakery cake, but the point here is that it’s not from the bakery—it’s something the kids made that Mom will truly love. Members of our super-selective kitchen team give this organic mix their seal of approval because the resulting cake comes out dense but moist, even if the pint-sized bakers are distracted and less than meticulous. It should definitely be served with a dollop of freshly whipped cream and an additional drizzle of olive oil (included in the box). If chocolate isn’t Mom’s thing, Elia sells mixes in vanilla with lemon and almond and citrus, too.

    Photo: SunPrint

    Sunprint Kit

All it takes is a little sunlight and about five minutes to make indigo prints of botanicals, handprints, or object collages.

    Buying Options

    $22* from Amazon

*At the time of publishing, the price was $20.

These light-sensitive squares of paper develop into a rich indigo when exposed to sunlight, but they remain white wherever they’re covered up. Have kids gather botanical ephemera on a walk, or top papers with their favorite smallish toys, like dollhouse families, matchbox cars, or other shapely treasures. After just five minutes in the sun and a quick rinse in water to lock in the print, the resulting shadows will serve as a fleeting snapshot of childhood. Each of the 15 included sheets is about 8 by 12 inches; they can be trimmed and preserved in a ready-made frame from Target or in something nicer from our favorite service, Framebridge.

    Construct her a garden

    Photo: KiwiCo

    KiwiCo Felt Succulent Garden

This assemble-it-yourself felt and clay garden is fun to make, looks almost as good as the real thing, and is impossible to kill.

Contributor Ellen Lee’s 12-year daughter proudly assembled this Felt Succulent Garden two years ago, and it’s still prominently displayed in her grandmother’s living room. The kit comes with precut felt pieces, a planter, modeling clay for garden adornments, and a link to step-by-step instructions. The actual design is up to the artist. For kids over 10, it takes about 45 minutes to create a pretty faux garden that doesn’t need sunlight, water, or repotting.

    Mix her a scrub

    Photo: Uncommon Goods

    DIY Sugar Scrub Kit

This kit includes everything needed—almond oil, sugar, scents, a reusable container, and labels—to make two jars of simple homemade body scrub.

A sugar scrub exfoliates skin, melts away in warm water, and leaves a nice moisturizing oil behind. This DIY Sugar Scrub Kit includes sugar, almond oil, lavender oil, orange peel powder, herbs, tools, and jars, so kids 8 and older can create the gift themselves (with supervision). Staff writer Samantha Schoech made it with her 12-year-old daughter, and they both had fun creating their signature scents and then actually using the scrub in the shower. They really liked the lavender and mint, but if the included scents aren’t for you, any essential oil will do. Hang on to the instruction sheet for future creations—the ingredients are easy to restock at any natural foods store.

    Paint a rock

    Photo: Creativity for Kids

Even if hand-painted rocks aren’t that high on Mom’s wish list, boy, do kids love making these. And because these are meant to be nestled outdoors, they’d make a lovely gift for a gardening mom, who can tuck them into beds and borders, or for the mom who needs a way to get the kids out hiking with her. The Creativity for Kids Hide & Seek Rock Painting Kit, which deputy editor Christine Cyr Clisset recommended after her daughter received it as a gift, comes with 10 rocks, eight pots of paint, and a bunch of transfer designs. Once decorated, the rocks are to be released into the wild to await discovery. The kit includes tracking stickers with hashtags, so those who come across a rock can post their find on social media. Kids can use the leftover paint on regular ol’ rocks, too.

    Create a calendar for her

    Photo: Artifact Uprising

    Artifact Uprising Modern Wall Calendar

This large, modern wall calendar has plenty of room for jotting schedules and planning, and it can be customized with the photos of your choice.

It’s a universally acknowledged fact that moms love pictures of their progeny. Unfortunately, it’s usually moms who end up doing the printing and displaying of said photos. With the help of a parent and the Artifact Uprising Modern Wall Calendar’s easy-peasy website or app, a kid can select photos for their mom and turn them into a wall calendar. We like that this one is made from 100% recycled paper fibers. We also love this calendar’s particularly sleek design and the ample space for jotting down birthday parties, practices, and concerts. And unlike many other photo calendars (which end up getting chucked or saved but not displayed), this one will let her tear along perforated edges and keep the photos forever. Have the kids make some art while you’re at it; you can scan it and mix it in for an even better snapshot of the moment.

    Personalize a tote

    Photo: Sarah Kobos

    L.L.Bean Boat and Tote

This tote is made from heavy canvas, so it will last a lifetime. It comes in four sizes, with a variety of handle lengths and color options, but it doesn’t have any pockets for storage.

    Stained by Sharpie Fabric Markers

Sharpie’s take on a fabric marker has a brush-like tip and leaves behind a dark, vibrant line. The ink holds up in the wash and doesn’t bleed. It will stain other surfaces, though.

If you and the kiddos are going to make her a special tote, you may as well start with a quality bag that will last forever. The classic L.L.Bean Boat and Tote is our pick, and it looks especially lovely graffitied with words of affirmation or bespoke art. To keep things simple in the execution, we’ve found that the Stained by Sharpie Fabric Markers are pretty amazing for laying down dark, vibrant pigment that doesn’t bleed or fade, even after multiple washes. Be warned they do stain absolutely everything, so either set kids up outdoors or on a surface of paper bags. You could provide stencils for older kiddos; younger ones will appreciate the satisfying, brushlike tip.

    Pinch her a pot

    Photo: Crayola

    Crayola Air-Dry Clay

This soft clay is easy to manipulate, and once it hardens (in two to three days), your masterpiece will be ready to paint. Although it’s nontoxic, it’s not food-grade or waterproof.

    Arteza Acrylic Paint

This paint produces vibrant hues, dries quickly, and glosses onto a number of surfaces, including clay, wood, glass, and paper.

With air-dry clay, it’s easy to mold Mom a tiny personalized pot to hold air plants, rings, or daily ephemera—and it’s 100 times easier to clean up after than traditional clay. Crayola Air-Dry Clay dries in two to three days and is then ready for acrylic paints. Of course, pots are just the beginning. As any dip into Pinterest will tell you, the possibilities with air clay are nearly limitless. Figurines, beads, ornaments, keychain doodads, and hand prints are also options. This clay is soft and easy on small hands. And even though leftover dried-out clay can be revived with a little water, keep the lid on if you want to reuse it.

    Pack her a picnic

    Photo: Michael Murtaugh

    The Forest Feast for Kids

This vegetarian gourmet cookbook features exquisite photos and watercolors, yet the 40 recipes are definitely for kids.

    Nemo Victory Picnic Blanket

Our favorite picnic blanket travels easily, is comfortable to sit on, and holds up to wear and tear.

Treat mom to a spring picnic, and then let her take home the supplies. Start by preparing a few kid-friendly recipes from the gorgeous Forest Feast for Kids, which staff writer Samantha Schoech’s teenagers have been cooking from since they were 8. The picnic menu suggests nutty couscous, strawberry wraps, and peanut butter coconut balls. Pack the treats in our picnic basket pick, which comes with four sturdy melamine plates, acrylic glasses, and real metal flatware. This basket is insulated to keep food hot or cold, and it collapses for easy storage. Spread out the feast on our favorite picnic blanket. It has a water-resistant lining to prevent damp bottoms (a real picnic-killer), and it feels soft and comfy.

    Make her some magnets

    Photo: Avery

    Avery Printable Magnet Sheets

You can print your photos straight onto these magnetic sheets. Instructions and templates on the site will help you get the shapes and sizes just right.

Have kids create some special art for Mom, scan it, and make her magnets. You can feed Avery Printable Magnet Sheets through your home printer to create custom fridge magnets using photos or kid-made masterpieces. Unless you have some graphic design skills, we recommend using the Avery website to set up the printing, since it supplies templates for both plain photo magnets and some pretty tacky themed options. Once the sheet prints, simply cut out the photos (scissors will work, but a craft cutter will make it look professional), and voilà—you’ve got customized magnets for about 75¢ a pop. The photos aren’t coated and are vulnerable to kitchen drips, but at that price, you can always print them again.

    Design her some hoops

    Write her some coupons

    Illustration: Dana Davis

    Printable coupons (free!)

The idea of custom coupons isn’t new, but the execution can be a little cuter this year, thanks to this printable template. Work with your kiddo to come up with age-appropriate tasks they can do for Mom—think vacuuming, doing the dishes, or pairing the socks up in the laundry. She may also like slightly more enjoyable coupons, such as an afternoon off from parenting or a night out with friends.

    Shibori-dye some tea towels

    Photo: Rit

Rit Indigo Shibori Tie Dye kit

This kit includes everything you need to get started with the Japanese art of shibori: indigo dye, dye fixative, gloves, rubber bands, and simple instructions. You supply the fabric.

Aunt Martha’s Premium Flour Sack Dish Towels

Our favorite cotton flour sack tea towels are absorbent, soft, and bleachable. And they come in packs of seven, so you can use them like paper towels.

Tie-dyeing is fun, but the resulting psychedelic prints may not exactly fit your mom’s aesthetic. Instead, pick up a shibori kit (shibori is a monochromatically chic Japanese dyeing technique). Several staffers have used Rit’s Indigo Shibori Tye Dye Kit on sweaters and T-shirts with good results, thanks to the kit’s straightforward instructions. We suggest starting with something easy, like a tea towel. But if the mom in your life has some boring article of clothing stashed away in a drawer, and it’s just begging for a dye job, go for it.

We love finding gifts that are unusual, thoughtful, and well vetted. See even more gift ideas we recommend.

    Samantha Schoech

Except for the time she gave a boyfriend her mother’s old toaster for Christmas, staff writer Samantha Schoech has a reputation as an excellent gift giver. She lives in San Francisco with two teens, two cats, a geriatric betta fish, and a bookseller husband. Her first book of short stories, My Mother’s Boyfriends, is coming out in 2024.

What to give for Mother’s Day

    02.11.2021

Mother’s Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of November. This is the best moment to thank your mom and remind you how much you love her. Let’s prepare warm words and gifts!

    3 facts about the holiday

    1. Its main symbol is forget-me-not, a sign of memory and devotion. It is usually presented with a teddy bear holding a flower in its paws. Before the holiday, you can find a toy in stores, in the mail – a postcard with an image of a forget-me-not. And on the streets, volunteers often distribute symbolic souvenirs.
    2. Mother’s Day has been officially celebrated in Russia for more than 20 years, since 1998. However, not everyone knows when this holiday is and that it even exists. Remind your friends – let them prepare and figure out how to please their mother in an original way.
    3. The holiday has a long history and is rooted in the history of Great Britain. Mother’s Sunday has been celebrated there since the 17th century. Perhaps that is why the tradition of baking English simnel cake for mothers has taken root in our country. You can easily find his recipe on the Internet.

    What to give

A useful accessory. Often mothers forget about such things as cosmetic bags, key holders or document covers. But these are status attributes. Take care of it yourself: find accessories to match the bag or simply choose a print that your loved one will love.

Edible surprise. A caring mother will definitely invite you to the table to have a sincere chat and find out how things are going. And he won’t miss the opportunity to feed him with normal food 😉 Therefore, taking something to the table is definitely a good idea, even if you have prepared something else as the main gift. Ideally, if the present is with a thematic inscription. She will remind you of the peculiarity of the moment.

Crockery. We do not call for giving a tenth frying pan or Chinese porcelain for 24 people, they are inappropriate. It is better to choose a small item that the recipient will use often. Suitable tea pair, mug or teapot. Definitely themed. We so rarely tell our mothers that they are the best and we love them – so let the dishes remind us of our feelings every day.

DIY gift. This is the highlight of the program! If you made a present yourself, mom will definitely be touched. And the more ridiculous the gift looks, the more emotions. Checked.

Little ones can make a postcard or a panel. For older children, we advise you to collect a festive photo album. Find the best joint pictures, prepare materials for scrapbooking – and go ahead, create! Whatever happens, be sure: mom will definitely save such a gift.

    Remember the atmosphere

Turn this day into a real celebration! Balloons, garlands and other festive decor will help to organize a good mood for mom.

What to give mom – gift ideas for mother’s day from Eli.ru

Mom is a special person in the life of each of us! This is not just a woman who gave us life, she is also the main friend, adviser and protector. There is reason to believe that there is a special bond between mother and child that only grows stronger over the years. And therefore it is not at all surprising that there is such a holiday as Mother’s Day. This celebration is a great occasion to congratulate our dear mothers, tell them about your feelings and thank them for everything they put into us.

The history of this warm and family celebration in our country has more than 20 years. Mother’s Day is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday in November. In 2022, we are preparing to please our mothers on the 27th.

But the world history of this celebration began many centuries ago. Even the ancient Greeks tried to exalt mothers: every March in honor of Rhea, considered the progenitor of all gods, magnificent celebrations were held. In Great Britain, the holiday appeared in the 17th century. This celebration reached the USA in 1872: Julia Ward Howe took the initiative to hold Mother’s Day, but no one supported her idea. More than 30 years later, another American, Anna Jarvis, managed to do this at 1910 year.

How did Mother’s Day appear in Russia? For the first time, our compatriots started talking about this holiday in 1915. Then it was celebrated on December 1, but this date was not fixed in the calendar. Several decades later, in 1988, Elmira Huseynova, a teacher from the city of Baku, took the initiative to officially create the celebration. She hosted a party at her school on October 30th. The following year, Mother’s Day was not celebrated, and in 1990 the importance of the event was already discussed in the State Duma. Mother’s Day in Russia was established on 1998 year. It should be noted that in addition to Britain, the USA and Russia, it is celebrated in more than 20 countries of the world.

How is Mother’s Day celebrated in our country?

Forget-me-not is considered to be the symbol of this celebration. An amazing blue flower represents devotion, constancy and incredible love. It is he who is depicted on their postcards, applications and other crafts by children preparing for the celebration of Mother’s Day in schools and kindergartens. Also, kids are happy to draw portraits of their beloved mothers, recite poems about them, sing songs. Schools and kindergartens often organize photo exhibitions, where joyful children bring the best pictures of their mothers.

In addition, every year Russia holds a social action with a touching and sensual title “Mom, I love you!”. As part of it, volunteers from different cities and villages of our country distribute wonderful postcards with the image of a bear cub and a forget-me-not to everyone around. Subsequently, all who received such cards can send them to their mothers. Thematic lectures are organized in schools and institutes within the framework of this action, and soldiers in military units write letters to their mothers.

What to give mom for Mother’s Day?

Every year, on the eve of this celebration, we begin to think how to please our relatives and loved ones. And in fact, what to give mom to make her feel the happiest in the world? We have selected some interesting ideas for you.

Keep in mind that the main thing for mothers is attention and our love, so a gift does not have to be expensive at all. You can quite make a surprise with your own hands – for example, cook something tasty, draw a beautiful picture for your mother or build crafts, do all the household chores so that the parent on her “professional holiday” can just relax and devote time to herself.

But if you still want to buy a gift, then catch some interesting and always relevant options:

    • Flowers in a vase. At the same time, it is not at all necessary to buy live roses, chrysanthemums and orchids. You can pick up a nice artificial plant in a vase or pot. It looks just like the real thing and does not require everyday care;

    • Planter. This is a great option for those mothers who are fond of growing indoor flowers. At the same time, the choice is so wide that you can easily pick up a gift for your mother – it can be either a classic planter or a model of an unusual shape or with an original decor;
    • Candles. They will fill the interior of the house with warmth, comfort, romance. It is very pleasant to be in a room in which candles are burning, your mom will be able to relax and unwind after a day filled with various household chores;
    • Living postcard. A great idea for kids who want to prepare a truly original gift for Mother’s Day. A live postcard is a great alternative to the classic paper version, it is a box with a small living garden on which you can write touching wishes;
    • Crockery. Each mother is a caring hostess and she will be very pleased to receive a set of beautiful plates, cups or glasses as a present;

    • Decorative figurines. If your mother loves to bring beauty and comfort in the house, then she will definitely be delighted with the original figurine or figurine.

How to Prepare Yourself When You Send Your Baby to Daycare

There comes a time for most families to send their kids to daycare. It’s not easy at first – especially if your child is just a baby, but like every other notch on the parenting journey, you will conquer this too.

For my family, my husband and I work at home as business owners, so we decided to keep our son home until age two and a half. Working with our sweet, rambunctious boy, constantly interrupting, was becoming impossible. For many families, the daycare phase can come as early as six weeks after maternity leave is exhausted and sometimes even after four weeks. Some U.S. companies have paid maternity leave policies ranging from 6-8 weeks on average) and then there is the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) which gives 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave (you cannot do both – parents must choose either paid leave based on their employer’s policy or 12 weeks of unpaid leave via FMLA.).

Whether it’s six weeks, eight weeks, or 12 weeks, sending your baby to daycare is scary and nerve-wracking. When the time comes for your family to take the daycare adventure, here are ten tips to make the process easier and ensure your baby is in good hands.

How to Prepare to Send Your Baby to Daycare

    Tip #1: Research

Try to get your baby on the list at a daycare center as soon as possible because early childhood centers typically fill up and are challenging to get into on short notice. Here’s how to find the best daycare that will fit your needs:

Make a list of all the recommended daycares and leave space for notes on each.

Start by asking other moms about their favorite daycare and why. I love utilizing local mom groups on Facebook for questions like this.

    Google each facility.

First, go to their website. You can tell a lot from their website, like the daycare’s mission, approach, schedule, programs, and story. Next, look at their Google reviews. Don’t dismiss a daycare if there are some bad reviews. Click on them and read because sometimes it’s genuinely the family and not the daycare who is causing issues. This happened with our daycare. A bad review was posted, and I knew it was 100% false – or at least the parent’s interpretation of the situation was false because my son had been attending this fabulous daycare for three years. If the positive reviews greatly outweigh a few negative reviews, then it’s safe to keep them on your list.

    Don’t rule out at-home daycares.

Usually, they take fewer children and may be a good fit for your needs.

    Tip #2: Brainstorm Daycare Alternatives

There may be some options available that don’t require daycare right away. For example, my friend wanted to wait for daycare until her baby was six months old, so she came up with an alternative plan because she still had to return to work. She split four days out of the week between her mom and a nanny. Her husband, who works from home, watched the baby on the fifth day. She has an in-home daycare lined up for when the baby is six months old. Another idea is to introduce daycare gradually by sending your child half days or only a few days a week. This works only if you can work from home or arrange other help for the non-daycare days.

    Tip #3: Arrange a Visit

After researching each recommended daycare, contact all the centers on your list. For us, we could rule out specific childcare centers right away just by an in-person visit. For older kids, bringing them with you on the visit is essential. Involving them in this process helps make the transition easier for them. With a newborn, it’s probably not as important to bring them, but the staff may want to see your adorable baby. Some daycare tours may also be conducted while you are still pregnant since it’s not uncommon for there to be a 6-month to a 1-year waiting list. When touring a daycare, I look for the following:

    Cleanliness

Look at toys and even the toys outside. Also, pay attention to the floors, corners, bathrooms, etc.

    Friendly Staff

The staff should be happy, welcoming, and accommodating.

    Food

If it’s during snack or lunch, you can take a peek at what they are serving. We loved that our daycare was BYOL, but if the childcare center provides lunch, it does matter what they are feeding kids. For babies, this obviously isn’t a concern right away because of the milk and baby food, but it’s important to be aware of this when they get older.

    Happy Kids

Are the kids happy? Are they bored? Do you see them engaging in learning or fun activities?

    Happy Environment

Are the walls bare or filled with children’s artwork on display? Are there fun colors, toys, and furniture in the facility?

Have questions prepared in case the daycare doesn’t answer them:
    • What is the teacher-to-child ratio?
    • What is your approach to discipline?
    • What is the daily schedule?
    • Do you follow safe sleep practices?
    • How do you comfort an upset baby?
    • Are meals and snacks provided, or do we bring our own?
    • Are the toys regularly cleaned and sanitized? If so, how often?
    • How do you handle naps?
    • Does the facility have cameras?
    • How do you communicate with parents so that we know how our kids are doing?
    • Is the facility baby-proofed?
    • What is your nap routine for babies?

Tip #4: Mentally Prepare to Send Your Baby to Daycare

It’s okay to feel scared and nervous putting your baby in daycare. You are just getting into the groove of taking care of your little bundle, and now you have to hand them off to some total stranger. You’re not alone. Moms usually feel a range of emotions – some rational and some irrational – like mom guilt, anxiety, sadness, and even relief. Mom guilt can creep in easily when you leave your baby all day with someone else. But remember, you researched diligently, visited multiple times, and have placed your baby in good hands. Your baby will still love you just as much, and just think how exciting it will be to pick up your little one every day.

Own your decision and know that you chose the best option for your baby. Expect to feel different emotions when sending your baby to daycare – and that’s okay. Process and stay positive. Each day at daycare gets easier and easier. Daycares have become a second family in our experience. It’s a nice bond that builds.

    Tip #5: Trial Run

Knowing what to expect and how much time you need to send your baby to daycare helps prepare for that first real day. The day before, make sure to have your bags packed and ready to help relieve some stress. Do a trial drive to the daycare after completing a morning routine to see if you are on time, early, or need more time. Often, the childcare center will let you come in to visit and observe for 2-3 hours before the first drop-off day.

    Tip #6: Pack Smart

    Here’s a simple baby-packing list for daycare:

    • Diapers and wipes
    • Diaper cream
    • A couple of spare outfits
    • Sleep items like a crib sheet and sleep sack
    • Comfort items like pacifiers or a lovey
    • Burp cloths and bibs
    • Blanket
    • Bottles, milk, food, and snacks
    • If cold out, pack a hat, mittens, and a snowsuit

Pack the night before to save time in the morning. Make sure to label everything and mark on all sides so the name can be seen quickly, no matter which side the teacher grabs.

    Tip #7: Communication

Write down your baby’s typical schedule. Make sure to include sleep routines, feeding times, and allergies or sensitivities. Then, discuss it with the teacher. Sometimes, the schedule may be different, but they will let you know and gradually get the baby on the daycare schedule. Being on the same schedule with the other kids makes it easier for the staff to take care of babies.

Also, find ways to stay up to date on your baby’s progress at daycare. Usually, there is an app or online parent portal to see daily updates and photos. Some daycares even have live video feeds that you can check anytime. My daycare only did photos and updates through an app, which was still great. They had cameras, but only for security purposes.

Finally, find the best way to reach your teacher and administrative staff should you have questions or need something. Of course, make sure they have the best way to contact you. Daycare is not an easy step to go through, but as you get to know the staff and see your baby thrive and learn, daycare becomes something you are very grateful for.

    Tip #8: Short and Sweet

Drop-offs should be short and sweet. Not only are the teachers busy and need to get back to their kids, but prolonging the drop-off doesn’t help the child or the parent. Having a trial run helps with the real drop-off day. Create a drop-off ritual, hand your child off after you hug and kiss them, and never turn around after you leave. This was the best advice I got when I had a 2-year-old going into daycare because once you look back – even if they are crying – it makes it worse.

With babies, they won’t always realize mommy or daddy is leaving, but not looking or going back reassures the teacher that you are trusting them with your baby. Establishing this rapport is crucial. It also helps your baby adjust. The more you stall and turn around, the more challenging it will be for your little one.

    Tip #9: Tears are Okay

I cried when I returned to my car on the first daycare drop-off day. It was happy tears because my child was not a tiny baby. I was feeling proud of this big next step. When dropping off a baby, however, it’s a lot different. Allow yourself to have those tears, and call someone on the phone to talk through it. It helps to talk to someone. My mom is always my go-to phone call. Some moms even take a day off from work on the first day of daycare drop-off. For me, I would rather keep busy at work, however.

Tip #10: Watch Baby Thrive When You Send Them to Daycare

One of the best parts of daycare is that it gives babies a healthy learning environment to grow and thrive — kids in daycare gain many developmental benefits1,2,3. I was in complete awe at what my child did in just one day at daycare, from circle time to endless arts and crafts, learning activities, outside play, story time, free play, snacks, lunch, naps, and so much more.

    Benefits of Daycare

Here are some great benefits to sending your child to daycare:

    • Teaches children how to share and take turns.
    • Provides practice making new friends, being part of a team, and playing well with others.
    • Helps hone communication skills.
    • Teaches problem-solving, compromise, and conflict-resolution techniques.
    • Encourages children to demonstrate cooperation, inclusion, and compassion.
    • Eases separation anxiety as children interact with other children and adults.
    • Teaches children to respect and listen to non-parent authority figures.
    • Gives children time to adjust to school-like schedules and routines.

In addition to the social skills that kids learn, sending your baby to daycare can help to provide a consistent routine. Cadence Education says, “As new little humans in a big world, children need a solid foundation of structure and stability to learn and grow. Having a consistent schedule and routine is one of the big benefits of daycare: it’s a great way to provide structure for children, which allows them to predict and anticipate what’s next.”

So when sending your baby to daycare, prepare by following these steps and know that daycare can truly be an extension of the home, like a second family. Our daycare was surely like family, and it’s so adorable as your child gets older. They really grow to adore and love their teachers so much. You’ve got this, mom (and dad too)!

How to Prepare Baby for Daycare: Tips from an Expert

The first day of daycare is just around the corner. Are you ready? Probably not, if we’re talking about feelings. But just because you’ll be an emotional wreck doesn’t mean you can’t be ready in other ways. So, how do you prepare for your baby’s first day at daycare? By going straight to the source for the insider tips to sending your baby or newborn to daycare.

Meet Renee, a distinguished daycare provider for over 20 years, who got together with us to offer you tips to making the transition to daycare as smooth as possible. With her help, you’re sure to be so well prepared, you’ll even remember the tissues.

Q: What should a parent look for in a daycare provider for their infant?

Renee: Of course, make sure it is someone you feel very comfortable with. My favorite thing about my job was getting a baby at three months old and they would stay until three, four, or even five years old and it was so much fun to watch them grow and become the little person they became. Sometimes, when they got older and got their driver’s license, they would come back and visit with me. This kind of relationship can be so beneficial to your baby and finding a provider you trust and get good feelings from is how you can help make that kind of relationship possible.

Besides someone they feel comfortable with, I always tell people to look for a provider who is licensed, if possible. If they aren’t licensed, that’s okay, just make sure they are CPR and first aid certified. It’s even better if they are infant-CPR certified, as it’s a different CPR experience for little ones than it is adults.

Q: What are some things parents should talk to their daycare provider about before the first day?

Renee: Always feel comfortable telling your provider how you want things done. You know your baby best and we get to know them better through you. Even things you feel are a personal matter, they matter to us. So, for example, if baby is having issues going from breast to bottle or you’re still trying to find a bottle nipple level that works, those kinds of things are very helpful for us to know about because we can work with you to work with baby. Knowing these kinds of ins-and-outs of baby’s daily life prior to spending the day with their provider will make the transition much smoother for everyone – but especially your baby.

Some things to consider talking to your daycare provider about include sleep routines, typical feeding times, and of course any allergies or sensitivities. Don’t be shy in giving your daycare a feeding and snack schedule. For toddlers, it’s also important to know how parents prefer to discipline their child. It can be a really tricky topic but consider this: If your kid bites another child and the daycare provider is unsure how you’d like them to handle the situation, you may not end up liking their personal approach to discipline.

Q: What’s one thing you want parents to know about the transition to daycare?

Renee: The most important thing to remember is that there’s going to be change in baby’s schedule from being with mom or dad during the day and being with their daycare provider. Nap time and play time – even down to the small things like the way you console baby, may be different. For example, if a baby can be calmed by being rocked in one arm while vacuuming with the other, that can’t happen at daycare. Some things have to change and that can be a little stressful for babies, so be prepared for the potential of a fussy baby in the first few days or week until they get adjusted.

While daycare providers don’t make big changes all at once, over time, baby’s daytime routine is going to follow the daycare’s overall routine, so it flows well with every child. If it’s possible, keeping that daytime routine during the weekends can help your little one not be so stressed out come Monday. That doesn’t always happen, so Monday’s can be tough on everyone. By Tuesday, though, it’s always peaches and cream again.

Q: How can parents prepare baby for the change in caregivers?

Renee: If baby is struggling with attachment, I always recommend that particular parent spend longer periods of time away from them so that baby can get used to that parent being gone. In the weeks and days leading up to the first daycare day, stretch the absence to as long as you can to help the transition into a full day.

Q: What should parents bring with baby on the first day of daycare?

Renee: Best case scenario, you’ll have two different sets of “stuff. ” One bag would be all of the items that need to go home with baby at the end of the day. Like blankets, lovey, pacifiers, teethers – anything that is “personal.”

The second thing to bring is a large tote that holds all of baby’s items that can stay with your provider. Diapers, formula, bottles, baby wipes, medicines, bibs, extra clothes, burp rags – all of the day-to-day things baby uses. Make sure you mark it with baby’s name.

Also, bring important paperwork like physicals, shot records, emergency phone numbers, and names and pictures of any potential caregivers who are allowed to pick up baby from daycare if you can’t, like grandma or a godparent.

Q: What are some tips to help parents make sure the daycare has everything baby will need?

Renee: What I liked people to do is bring enough at one time for at least two weeks. So, in that large tote, bring at least two weeks’ worth of diapers, baby wipes, formula – all the perishable things. And when it comes to formula or breastmilk, bring more than necessary if you can. Sometimes baby will have a really hungry day, so having some extra food around is important. For breastmilk, breastmilk storage bags are great because you can mark them with your baby’s name and I can keep them in the freezer, so they’ll stay good.

Bringing extra sets of items means that you don’t have to drag all of this stuff each day, just the single bag of their personal items that will go back home with them.

The first day of daycare can be stressful and full of feelings. But by having all the details sorted out prior, your time is spent with baby rather than worrying. Just make sure you don’t forget the tissues!

The child is crying and does not want to go to kindergarten – what should I do?

Yesterday the child happily ran to the kindergarten, but today it cries, grabs hold of you and flatly refuses to go there. What is rollback in adaptation, why does it happen and what should parents do? We deal with the child and family psychologist Olga Khlopova.

Question. Initially, my three-year-old child went to the garden with pleasure. There was no crying, no other horrors of adaptation that frightened me. And now, two months later, he suddenly said sharply that he would no longer go to the garden. Tears and tantrums began. What happened – and how to get everything back on track?

Answer. Kindergarten is a new space for a child. When a child first comes there, he experiences stress, but at the same time he is attracted to many things, and new impressions maintain interest, motivation to return there again. But after some time he gets used to it and finds out: there are not only interesting things here, but also those that are alarming. And again begins to experience stress. Moreover, if earlier the child could be distracted by new impressions, now this does not work, because everything around has already become familiar.

In addition, 2-3 months in the garden (if you count from the beginning of the school year, this is November – December) is, in principle, a difficult time of the year. At this time, it gets dark early, it is cold and dank outside, the season of constant snot and SARS begins. In this case, going to kindergarten is also rejected because of discomfort: who wants to get up early and go somewhere in the dark and damp?

And there is also a typical story about accumulated fatigue. For the same first-graders, lessons usually last up to 12 hours, there are holidays, there are interesting circles where you can switch. And preschoolers stay in the garden, as a rule, until the evening, without holidays, they don’t always go anywhere else but the kindergarten. For them, it’s like a full-fledged five-day work week, and not the easiest.

If the child is tired, if he can no longer cope with the psychological load, it is important not to let him burn out completely and, if possible, take a break – for example, an unscheduled day off. Most likely, it will not be easy to organize from the point of view of logistics. But if there is such an opportunity, great. This will support the child.

Often, educators oppose such absenteeism: they say that, on the contrary, it can ruin everything, the child will get out of the rut, begin to act up and demand to stay at home even more. But in fact, if you discuss the rules with the child in advance (we stay at home not according to desire and mood, but having discussed the day and format of absenteeism in advance, explaining that this, for example, can be no more than once a week, and so on), you will insure yourself from manipulation. The child will understand that such indulgences do not happen spontaneously, that even here you need to follow the rules, that for an unscheduled day off you still need to go to kindergarten for a couple of days. And then it will give him additional support, maybe even motivation.

It is not a fact that after an unscheduled day off the child will happily run to the garden

But such a break will allow his nervous system to reboot. On the contrary, accumulated fatigue and lack of rest can break it. In this case, a negative attitude towards the kindergarten and the negative patterns of behavior associated with it can be fixed. And then tantrums and whims in the morning will become a kind of ritual that will help the child relieve stress.

Adapting to kindergarten is a long process, but there is no need to be afraid of it. A person throughout his life is constantly adjusting to new circumstances, a new environment, a new schedule. The main thing here is to learn to notice in time that resources are depleted and find sources that would feed them.

And more. If a child is worried about kindergarten, do not scold him or devalue his feelings with words like: “You will still miss kindergarten at school.” On the contrary, pronounce his feelings, but offer a way out (“I understand that you don’t want to get up, leave the house, go somewhere. Do you think everyone is in the same mood today? Why is the teacher cheerful? Maybe she has some “Something a secret? Let’s think: what?”).

It is important for a child to know that you understand him, empathize, but at the same time you are not helpless, you do not cry with him, but you know how to find a positive way out of the situation. But it is important that this sympathy be real, sincere.

IF THE CHILD DOES NOT GO TO GARDEN YET. ..

To join the queue for kindergarten, you applied on the public services portal or in person. It contained information about the baby, as well as priority kindergartens for you.

If you are registered in Moscow and submitted an application through the personal account of the portal of state and municipal services in Moscow (address: www.pgu.mos.ru), then before February 1 of the year in which it is planned to send the child for enrollment in kindergarten, you can change certain data in the application: year of admission, registration address, information and availability of benefits, priority kindergartens. This can be done through your personal account on the public services portal or by contacting the district information support service.

Accordingly, if you move to another area, you can move the queue. To do this, you need to write an application to the district education authority with a request to reschedule the queue indicating the reason, then the place for the child in the queue will remain and next year he will go to kindergarten without any problems. But keep in mind that in this case, your offspring will most likely end up not in the garden you have chosen, but in the one in which there will be places.

IF THE CHILD ALREADY WENT TO THE GARDEN IN THE OLD PLACE OF RESIDENCE…

The transfer of a child to a new kindergarten consists of two stages: deductions from one kindergarten and admission to another. Moreover, you must first obtain a ticket (referral) for enrollment in a new kindergarten. To do this, you need to apply with an application to the district education authority at the new place of residence.

A voucher (referral) is issued only if there are free places in the kindergarten.

Having received a voucher (referral), the parents (legal representatives) of the child write to the head of the kindergarten, where the child is now attending, a statement with a request for his expulsion. It indicates the last name, first name, patronymic of the child, date of birth, group of study, as well as the name and address of the kindergarten to which it is planned to transfer the child, indicating the reason for the transfer. A copy of the voucher-direction is attached to the application, which confirms the acceptance of the child in another kindergarten. If there is a debt to pay for the maintenance of a child in kindergarten, you will need to pay it off.

Next, an application for admission is written in the name of the head of the kindergarten to which the child is transferred. The application shall indicate the surname, name, patronymic of the child, the date of his birth, as well as the surname, name, patronymic of the parents (legal representatives) of the child.

Already in the new kindergarten, an application and admission of the child, a voucher, the original document proving the identity of the applicant, the child’s medical card and other documents, if any, are submitted.

The head of the kindergarten issues an order to enroll the child and concludes an agreement with the parents (legal representatives) of the child.

    IF YOU ARE REJECTED…

#FOOTNOTE#According to the law1, you can be refused on the basis of the child’s age: if he is under 2 months old or older than 7 years old, or because there are no free places in kindergarten. There are no other legal grounds for refusing admission.

If there are no vacant places in the kindergarten, the child’s parents must contact the district education authority at the place of registration to resolve the issue of placing the child in another kindergarten2.

According to the legal position of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation, expressed in Resolution No. 5-P dated May 15, 2006, the state and municipalities, based on the constitutional requirement that preschool education is generally accessible, regardless of place of residence, are obliged to maintain a sufficient number of existing preschool educational institutions and the need to expand their network.

If you have been refused admission to your child, get the refusal in writing: you can file a complaint with the local authorities or the court. As a rule, the courts are on the side of the plaintiffs: Ruling of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation of August 13, 2014 No. 35-KG14-2; Determination of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation of February 17, 2015 No. 50-KG14-12; Appeal ruling of the Perm Regional Court dated March 25, 2015 in case No. 33-2748; Appeal ruling of the Omsk Regional Court dated 05.09.2012 in case No. 33-5207/2012; Appeal ruling of the Khabarovsk Regional Court dated 08/01/2012 in case No. 33-4953/2012.

But, of course, we wish you not to face problems when enrolling your child in kindergarten, even if after submitting the application you moved to another area of the city!

    Description:

Little Lambs Daycare and Preschool Ministry:
We offer quality childcare at affordable prices. Full preschool curriculum provided at no extra charge.
We are not an institution. We do not force one genericschedule onto every single child regardless of maturity level or age. We tailor each curriculum and each routine to each child, as everyone really should.
We are not some place where your child will have a different teacher every week. There is no turn-over in a family home.
We do not place your child into a room of 15 other children the same age with just one or two teachers who may or may not even be mothers themselves. Your child already knows how to be their own age! In our home, they will interact with people of many different ages. An inter-generational education and daycare setting prepares even the little ones for the real world. None of you spend your entire day with 15 other people the exact same age as you are. How boring and weird would that be? Why expect that for your child?
We do not believe in using the t.v. or toys or food to entertain a child. Children come here to be interacted with and to learn. We are the ones responsible for that, not some inanimate object.
We are not a germ waiting to catch your child. Every single item in our main room is sanitized every single day. We keep things to a minimum and rotate them out for optimum health. Our kids have been extremely healthy this year, and we work hard to ensure that.
We are not just a place to keep your child. We are a home with lots of love, patience, kindness, and respect. We are a big family here.
We are not in this to make money. We do not take just anyone into our home for a paycheck. We pray over each one and let the Lord lead us in who comes to our home. Money is not even considered. Attitudes, integrity, faith, and morals are considered. There is not one bad influence in our home, and we try to keep it that way. The children here are wonderful, and we would love to welcome yours into our family.
Our Full-Time Rates are $100 per week regardless of age ($20 daily). No extra charge for infants! We do not charge a supply fee or enrollment fee. We strive to be honest and fair in our pricing as Jesus would want us to be….

She goes above and beyond to provide for her students and their needs. She is always positive, and praises her students for even the smallest of accomplishments. Not only does she provide her students with Rich curriculum, but both inside and outside play opportunity. We have never regretted our decision to enroll him, and will be sad when Kindergarten comes for our little guy….

I love that she doesn’t cry at drop off. They keep the kids active and moving. They read books and do science experiments. I feel she is safe there. The director is level headed and helps resolve problems. She teaches the children how to voice their needs early. My kid is happy and a very well mannered kid and I know it’s because we can trust the school to help us raise her.

My son has Autism. La Petite is very supportive and allows my son’s ABA therapists, SLT, and OT all work together. This is called universal design. Joe now talks because he has therapy and is in the least restrictive environment. My son deserves to be with everyone else. I totally recommend this place.

I loved this school the moment I walked in. The staff is friendly, caring, and down to earth. They serve things to eat that my kids already like and things that they have never eaten before and ask for at home and they listen to me and work with me about dietary concerns.

MCCA’s approach to school readiness helps children acquire the skills they need to be successful throughout their school careers. Research shows that the social and emotional skills nurtured early in a child’s life are major predictors of children’s later school success.

  • Mission Statement

    • Child Guidance

Our licensed and accredited child care programs provide a secure, comfortable environment where children are guided by clear and consistent limits and learn self-control. An essential component of our approach to discipline involves teaching children appropriate expression of their feelings. Child guidance techniques focus on respect, trust, honesty and caring for others and we approach guidance from a child development perspective.

Techniques such as distraction and redirection are used with our youngest children. As children mature, we build on these approaches with more language as we help children label their feelings and develop skills in expressing these feelings in words. Teachers actively model problem solving techniques and engage children in discussion and implementation of logical consequences of inappropriate behavior.

Teaching staff periodically conduct child assessments and develop plans to guide classroom behavior. Conferences may be scheduled with families to address more challenging behaviors or other developmental issues.

    • Staff Training Requirements

MCCA provides customized professional development to all staff and encourages its employees to pursue higher levels of education through scholarships and other incentives. MCCA teachers and aides meet or exceed all professional requirements as established by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Office of Child Care and our staff participate in the MSDE Child Care Credentialing program.

    Spread Love

Since the 1970s, a wave of homelessness has swept through the United States that never existed before. Various factors are said to be responsible for the increase in the number of homeless people on the streets. These include industrialization and mass migration to urban areas, the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill, high unemployment and the emergence of HIV and AIDS. This has led to the emergence of a number of organizations helping the homeless.

Since the 1970s, when organizations to help the homeless began to operate, the number of homeless people has steadily declined significantly. According to Statista, the number of homeless people in 2021 was 326,126, a decrease of 44% from the previous year.
