SUMMER DAY CAMP The Safekey Administration Office is excited to announce that we will be hosting two Safekey Summer Day Camp locations in the South West area of the valley. Registration will open Wednesday, April 26th at 9:00 am. Spots will be on a first come, first served basis. Parents must complete a Summer Day Camp Registration Form (found on our website) prior to paying for days.

Registration Instructions:
Please log into your account (or create an account if you don’t have an account, then log in) and follow the steps, as noted below. If you receive a message like “the family members must take at least one prerequisite”, it means you have not paid the $10 Registration/Participation fee (Step 2). You must complete Step 2 before you are able to move to Step 3, where you are able to select days/sessions you would like to enroll in and pay for your child to attend Safekey from the calendar.

Please enroll each child in the Safekey Participation Fee ($10 registration per child) at the appropriate site/school, by selecting/marking the participation fee the prerequisite requirement will be satisfied.

Clark County Parks & Recreation Safekey is a before and after school recreational based program. It is offered to students in grades K-8 at participating schools. Safekey offers a healthy environment where participants will engage in, a variety of activities including indoor/outdoor individual and small group games, arts & crafts, our CCPR reading program, and provide an afternoon snack; all designed to enhance your child’s social growth. Clark County Safekey does not provide one-on-one care.

Safekey does not operate when school is not in session (teacher training, Winter Break, Spring Break etc.).  A great alternative for Safekey participants is offered at several of Clark County’s Recreation Centers. Click here for a list of Clark County Community Centers.

Weather in Las Vegas

Located in the middle of the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas has hot and dry summers with mild winters and plenty of sunshine all year round. At the height of summer, in July and August, mercury often soars above 38 C.

Winters are cooler and bring windswept nights, with daytime highs around 16 C and cool nights averaging 4 C.

Light rain usually falls in the winter, from January to March. In summer sometimes late thunderstorms approach from Mexico.

Las Vegas residents

Las Vegas locals are always smiling. This polite habit of Americans is no longer surprising, but why do they smile at strangers? It turns out that this is an awkward situation – to look into the eyes of a stranger, and to smooth this moment – people smile.

Another unspoken rule in Las Vegas is about personal space. For example, do not approach people in line. Everyone obeys the rules! There is no point in getting nervous and thinking about how to get to work or somewhere to exceed the speed limit.

The locals also have one habit against manners: they have some strange way of licking their fingers in public places and at home, without embarrassment.

Tours from Las Vegas

Although the city is mostly known for its artificial sheen, many wonderful natural attractions draw visitors from Las Vegas. Popular city tours include visiting the spectacular Grand Canyon, the engineering marvel of the Hoover Dam, and the beautiful desert scenery of Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire.

Hoover Dam

Stretching 380 meters across the Colorado River, the Hoover Dam holds the waters of Lake Mead and is a fine example of the engineering of its time. One of the world’s most famous dams, the Hoover Dam was built during the Great Depression in the 1930s – one of the many massive public works projects commissioned by the US government to get people back to work.

The dam employed thousands of people from all over the country, and its hydroelectric plant continues to provide electricity to Nevada and neighboring states. In addition to engineering achievements,

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is popular with both watersports enthusiasts and sunbathers.

Grand Canyon

Depth of 446 km long and up to 29 km wide, the breathtaking splendor of the Grand Canyon is so impressive that words simply cannot justify it. One of the greatest natural wonders of the world, it was formed by the cutting of the Colorado River over millions of years, when the harder rock formations remained great cliffs, pinnacles and hills, and the various layers of rocks had a variety of colors: purple, fiery red and pastel. pinks to yellows, browns, grays and soft blues.

Whether on foot or horseback, from a plane or helicopter, aboard a raft down the mighty Colorado River, or simply gazing in awe at the edge, the seemingly endless depths of the canyon can be explored in a variety of ways. The park receives crowds of visitors from all over the world who can’t help but be blown away by the sculpted rock forms, changing colors, with light and a tiny glimpse of the Colorado River far below.

Grand Canyon National Park consists of two separate areas: the south and the more remote north. The distance from the canyon to 16 km is 346 km from one visitor center to another, and the southern edge, being the most accessible with more facilities, sees about 90 percent park visitors. The northern edge is higher in elevation and wetter, with thicker surrounding forests, and is farther away and usually closed due to snow between mid-October and mid-May, but many people prefer the comparative tranquility of its less crowded lookouts.

Both rims have several driveways and walkways along the rim with numerous viewpoints for viewing from different angles, as well as several hikes down into the canyon where you can spend the night at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon.

The impact of millions of visitors a year on the South Rim, especially during the busy summer months, has a negative impact on the park, where overcrowding and traffic congestion are common. Despite all the inconveniences, it is an unforgettable experience to visit one of the most striking examples of erosion in the world.

Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon is a spectacular valley 10 miles west of Las Vegas and is a good hike to avoid the neon lights of the slot machines. Its distinguishing feature is the steep slope of the Red Rock, which rises to 914 m along its western edge.

Today, the dramatic landscape is teeming with cacti and Joshua trees and is a good place for walking, climbing, biking or just taking a scenic drive.

The Mojave Desert is not as barren as it may seem, the place is teeming with rare life and beauty – waterfalls crash into canyons, and high above the red mountains tailed hawks seek their food. To experience the natural beauty of Nevada, there is no better place to explore.

Valley of Fire

Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s oldest park and is so named for its red sandstone formations that look like they’re on fire when the sun reflects off them.

The rocks were formed over 150 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the area. Aside from the rugged beauty of the surrounding Mojave Desert, the park’s main attractions are the well-preserved petroglyphs that adorn the many red sandstone structures left there by the ancient Pueblo people, also known as the Anasazi.

This rock art has been variously dated from 300 BC. before 1150 AD Visitors should head to Atlatl Rock to see some of the finest examples of ancient Indian rock art or petroglyphs, including a depiction of the atlatl, which is a serrated stick used to propel spears, the forerunner of the bow and arrow. Other activities here include hiking and camping.

Las Vegas Attractions

When you visit Las Vegas, you quickly realize that the city itself is the biggest attraction. You can just stroll down the Strip and bask in the fluorescent lights, hum in the traffic, ping the slot machines and absorb the incredible energy of this incredibly exciting desert city. A century ago, there was nothing special here, but since then Las Vegas has become one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Key attractions are, of course, the extravagant casinos The Strip, competing to attract passers-by with lavish displays and performances. Most people come to Las Vegas to play, party, or maybe get married in one of the famous chapels, but the city is also an entertainment hub, offering theme parks, incredible pools, giant malls, and more. Music lovers should head to the Liberace Museum and the many grand shows, and car fans won’t want to miss the world-class car collection.

If you are hiking, do so at night, when the lights have the most impact and the temperature is coolest. During the day, make the most of the city buses that run the entire lane.

Las Vegas may seem brash and sleazy at first, but this fun and fantasy-filled city is described as the world’s largest theme park and attracts kids. The city is making an effort to attract families, and of course they have something to lure them in. Nestled in the middle of the vast Mojave Desert, this lively resort offers everything from wildlife viewing to theme parks and shopping malls. Naturally, there are many places in Vegas that are not suitable for children, but there has been a concerted effort to accommodate families, with family resorts springing up in and around the city.

Kids on vacation in Las Vegas will be immediately impressed by the recreated skylines of New York and Paris seen from The Strip and revel in the adventurous glimpse of exploring the canals of Venice or the Egyptian pyramids.

In an attempt to lure casino players into spending all their cash, accommodations and restaurants in Las Vegas are surprisingly affordable – a real benefit for families on vacation.

The pursuit of pleasure by both parents and children is possible all year round. Summer in Las Vegas is very hot, but everything is air conditioned.

Bellagio

Bellagio is one of the most luxurious hotels in Las Vegas and the most popular casinos. With an Italian theme, the bulk of Bellagio is in its own huge garden.

It has over 3,000 rooms, hundreds of slot machines and gaming tables. However, its most famous attraction is the amazing water show – a breathtaking union of water, music and light. From 15:00 to midnight (12:00 on weekends), the world-famous Bellagio Fountains “dance” to operatic, classical or whimsical music with carefully choreographed movements.

Behind the graceful lobby of the Bellagio is the Conservatory and the Botanical Garden, a magnificent garden full of fragrance, texture and color. The hotel also has a new fine arts gallery that hosts contemporary art exhibitions.

Fremont Street

Also known as “Shiny Gorge” for the bright neon signs and the thousands of flashing lights that line the streets, you’ll find Vegas Vic and Sassy Sal, two of the country’s most famous neon icons.

Some of the city’s most famous vintage casinos are located here, including the Golden Nugget and Gold Spike, as well as most of the strip clubs and stage shows.

Most of the entertainment is near the Freemont Street Experience. Fremont Street embraces the iconic look of Vegas, giving people exactly what they expect when they think of the glitzy casino city.

Auto Collection

With over 250 classic vintage cars on display, the Imperial Palace Auto Collection is a must for car enthusiasts. This is actually part of a large collection and the cars are regularly changed in the showroom.

All cars are available for purchase and once a car is sold it is replaced with another one. The exhibit features rare models, racing cars, performance cars, touring roadsters and dozens of cars that were once owned by the rich and famous.

Considered to be one of the largest and finest collections of classic cars in the world, this massive showroom is a gas head heaven and very popular with Vegas tourists.

MGM Grand

MGM Grand, one of the most famous casinos in Las Vegas and was the largest hotel in the world, opened in 1993 with over 5,000 rooms. The complex also houses about 19 restaurants, many shops and nightclubs, a conference center and a spa.

The MGM Grand was the most famous attraction for many years, but the casino closed in early 2012 as part of a major renovation. Today, MGM Grand is home to many exciting entertainment venues. The MGM, an iconic Vegas landmark, has thrilled and entertained visitors for years.

Mandalay Bay

The 44-story Mandalay Bay Hotel is one of the largest on the Las Vegas Strip with over 3,000 hotel rooms and a 12,500 sqm casino.

The tropical-themed resort has a number of popular family attractions, including a marine aquarium with a shark reef and massive stage performances ranging from Broadway musicals to stage productions.

However, the most popular attraction in Mandalay Bay is Mandalay Beach, an 11-acre swimming pool that has three heated pools, a wave pool, a lazy river and a children’s pool. The Mandalay Bay Hotel has its own bar and restaurants.

Luxor

The ancient Egyptian themed Luxor Hotel is one of the most famous attractions on the Las Vegas Strip. It is a massive black glass pyramid containing 36 floors of hotel rooms. It shines through the night sky with one of the most powerful beams of light in the world, which they claim is visible on planes circling Los Angeles.

The ground floor of the hotel is reserved for a huge casino, which stands under the tomb of King Tut. In addition to gambling, entertainment at the hotel includes an IMAX theater, gyms, swimming pools and exhilarating shows of comedians, dancers and singers. The Luxor is a Vegas landmark and one of the most popular casinos and hotels in the city.

Treasure Island

No longer the pirate family haven it used to be, Treasure Island has reinvented itself as an adult-oriented contemporary resort. Sirens of TI Free Show is a must-see special effects show on the Las Vegas Strip, with music, explosions and beautiful women.

Treasure Island is also home to the show and offers many restaurants and nightclubs. Famous comedians and musicians regularly perform at the resort. Treasure Island, while not a family resort, is an exciting adult destination in Vegas and one of the city’s perennial favorites.

Amusement Park

The Adventuredome glass theme park is the perfect attraction for those looking for a thrill-seeking Las Vegas vacation. Its loop rollercoasters and other harrowing rides are not to be missed. If that adrenaline rush is too much, you can also see magic shows here, as well as plenty of treats like ice cream, popcorn, and candies.

There are also rides and activities designed for younger children who may not be old enough to ride the main attractions. The fact that the theme park is indoors is an added bonus, protecting visitors from Nevada’s sometimes inhospitable climate.

Buffalo Bill

Buffalo Bill Amusement Park is a great place for kids to enjoy everything from diving into the ground, defying gravity, or walking on a fabulous lake.

Buffalo Bill is an excellent Las Vegas resort choice for families traveling with children as the resort caters to adults and children alike and is known for its high energy live performances as well as an amusement park and playgrounds. The kids will be happy and busy as the adults take in the more adult sights of the resort.

Las Vegas Festivals

Jazz Festival

The annual City of Las Vegas Jazz and R&B Festival takes place at the Clark County Government Amphitheater, where festival-goers can enjoy days in the Nevada heat to listen to the good old beat and blues.

Those looking for a good time should bring a camping chair, sunhat, some snacks and refreshments and go to the stage to watch the live performances. Souvenirs and food stalls are also available.

Rock and Roll Marathon

The Las Vegas Rock and Roll Marathon runs along the Strip, where runners can enjoy the sights and sounds of Sin City and spectators can enjoy live entertainment including music.

Runners and spectators alike can look forward to an energetic run and party that captures the wild Vegas spirit. The half marathon has a wave start, allowing runners plenty of room to enjoy the run and side activities along the way.

Burning Man Festival

Burning Man Festival is one of the most unique festivals in the world. More than 20,000 people from all over the world take part in it every year. This is a celebration of art, creativity and humanity. Unlike most other festivals in the world, there is no commerce, no shops, no rock stars, no rollercoasters.

It’s just a meeting, albeit a very large one. The tranquility of the area makes festival goers feel at ease. The emphasis is on community and people helping each other. On the final day, the Burning Man bonfire takes place, setting the sky on fire as the community dances around. Due to the non-commercial nature of the festival, attendees are advised to bring whatever they may need with them.

Rodeo

Referred to as the “Super Bowl Rodeo”, cowboys and cowgirls from across America and Canada train throughout the year in hopes of becoming one of the top 15 to claim victory and compete for prize money. Activities include bull riding, team stunts, bronco saddle, bareback, steering wrestling, and barrel racing.

There is no better place to experience the still enduring US cowboy culture. The competition includes food stalls and rides that should be fun for the whole family.

Las Vegas Restaurant

There was a time when Las Vegas restaurants were known for more quantity than food. This was due to legendary casino buffets that offered mountains of food at modest prices on the well-calculated assumption that diners would play long hours at the tables or slot machines, and stay longer in the casino if they ate generously.

Today, however, Las Vegas has a large selection of world-class eateries, especially Italian cuisine, classic French fine dining and luxurious steakhouses.

Some of the country’s best chefs are now in Las Vegas and new restaurants are opening weekly. In addition, Vegas is home to several world-class sommeliers. Restaurants have certainly become one of the many entertainment venues in Vegas where restaurants attract the attention of many diners.

All this growing activity and more competition means that Vegas offers decent value for money compared to other major cities.

The end result is that the former 99 cent shrimp cocktail capital is now regarded as the cuisine capital of the world. When it comes to food at least the odds are really in your favor. Don’t panic, huge buffets are still available!

Shopping

Las Vegas is one of the world’s shopping capitals. There are over 20 malls, each with a unique theme and each offering prices that retailers in other cities are trying to compete with.

Las Vegas Town Square shops are mostly on the street, so you can enjoy a friendly walking atmosphere while exploring the wide range of shops. The town square also offers an eclectic selection of restaurants, a newly built spa and a lovely interactive kids park.

Caesars Palace is home to extremely popular shopping with over 220,000 square meters of retail space. The Fashion Show Mall at 3200 Las Vegas Boulevard is well worth a visit for incredible deals. The recently refurbished Boulevard Mall, with over 170 stores, is also a good option.

The Strip is known for its designer boutiques and all the big names are represented here. Away from The Strip and the luxury malls, you can find more individual stores selling Las Vegas collectibles like old gambling chips, esoteric books, and weird clothes. Two markets that are really worth visiting are Broadacres Swap Meet and Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet.

Las Vegas at night

There’s a reason they say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. With world-class bars, clubs, strip clubs, casinos, and international shows hosted for years, it’s no surprise that Las Vegas has earned itself the fame, and often infamy, as one of the party capitals of the world.

The world famous Strip can be soft and muddy during the day, but the minute the sun goes down this desert oasis comes to life. The real problem when heading out for the night on the Strip is choosing where to start.

There are always major comedy or musical acts and big Broadway plays to be seen in major hotels throughout the city. World famous wizards like David Copperfield and Criss Angel, singers like Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Cher and famous actors call Las Vegas home.

Hotels in Las Vegas offering great entertainment include the Bellagio, the Venetian, Caesar’s Palace, Mandalay Bay, Treasure Island and the MGM Grand.

Casinos in Las Vegas are also the best place for nightclubs and bars. Famous clubs host celebrity parties almost every weekend.

Las Vegas Transportation

Most trips to Las Vegas are limited to the Strip and downtown so there is no need to hire a car as both are easily accessible on foot and there are several modes of transportation that can be used.

Local buses run all the way to the city center and operate 24/7 at a fixed price including transfers. The old-fashioned Las Vegas Strip Trolley also operates the entire length of the Strip from 8:30 am to midnight, and the Downtown Trolley simultaneously circles between the Stratosphere and downtown.

A modern monorail runs over the streets and operates from 7:00 am to 3:00 am between the Sahara Hotel and the MGM Grand. Taxis are plentiful and can be found queuing outside every hotel and casino, as well as at taxi ranks. Cars are the most practical way to explore the Las Vegas area.

Las Vegas Airport

But the project was blocked after conservationists proved to American justice that pumping water from an underground reservoir threatened the vast number of animals and plants that live on areas to be drained and through which pipes will be laid. Our History

The classroom friendship of two little boys in elementary school resulted in their mothers’ meeting and starting Gingerbread Cottage Preschool. Anne Long and Shirley Patterson opened Gingerbread Cottage Preschool in September 1977 at the West End Alliance Church in Glen Allen, VA.

In 1986 the school moved from West End Alliance Church to Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Glen Allen, VA, where it remained until 1992. The school then moved to its present location in Laurel Presbyterian Church in Glen Allen, VA.

In 1987 and 1996 the school expanded into two new areas. In 1987, Gingerbread Cottage Preschool opened a new location at Berea Baptist Church in Rockville, VA. In 1996 Gingerbread Cottage Preschool opened another location at Northside Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, VA. In 2005, the Mechanicsville school moved to Gethsemene Church of Christ, and then in 2008 the Mechanicsville school relocated to Shalom Baptist Church where it is presently located.

 

Throughout the years, the school has truly been blessed. The congregations who have allowed us to rent the facilities of their churches have graciously supported early childhood education. It is the talent, hard work, dedication, and love of our wonderful staff that have made Gingerbread Cottage so successful.

 

In August, 2007 Anne retired from the day to day business of children. In January, 2011 Shirley lost her long battle with cancer. Anne and Shirley knew that their dream of serving young children and their families surely had come true.

 

Today Anne and Shirley’s dream and legacy continue as Gingerbread Cottage Preschool moves forward still serving the community since it originated in 1977.

Philosophy

Our curriculum fosters self-esteem, takes the individual needs of each child into consideration, encourages respect for others, and provides a wide range of educational experiences for your child.

 

Our site directors are knowledgeable about the SOL standards that must be met in the public school system. With this information in mind, our curriculum is designed to incorporate many pre-SOL skills, which will enable our students to be prepared as they enter kindergarten.

 

Each week the curriculum is based upon a different educational theme. All classroom activities, including art, stories, music, and finger plays, revolve around this unit of study. Educational speakers, special emphasis days, cultural studies, and holiday parties are also important aspects of our program. Gingerbread Cottage Preschool students receive regular musical instruction. Our music teacher provides the children with a variety of songs, creative movement, and a study of musical instruments.

The primary mission of Gingerbread Cottage Preschool is to provide a loving, engaging and fun atmosphere where each child can reach his/her emotional, social, and academic potential and create a love for lifelong learning.

Health & Safety

Student and staff health and safety is one of our top priorities. Gingerbread Cottage Preschool students practice healthy habits such as regular handwashing.

  team of child development experts who have true passion for

• Your child health and safety is of key importance to us here at
  KinderCare. Some of the features we offer to make your family feel
  more secure include: all staff are CPR & First Aid Certified; we
  utilize a mandatory cleaning checklist per class, keypad entry, all
  our outdoor play areas are fenced, proper hand washing procedures
  are practiced by teachers and children, we ensure that criminal
  background checks are done for all staff, all our classroom
  cleaning supplies are kept locked and out of children’s reach, we
  only allowed pre-approved pick ups with photo identification to

What time can I drop my child off for school in the morning?

Children who are not enrolled in Harambee’s optional Before Care service should be dropped off between 8:30-8:45 AM in time for the child to receive breakfast. The daily instruction schedule begins at 9:00 AM.

Does Harambee require students to wear uniforms?

No, children are not required to wear uniforms; although, parents may choose to dress their child in uniform attire if that is their preference. We do ask that children wear clothing in which they can play freely, along with socks and closed-toe shoes.

What holidays do Harambee observe?

HFA Preschool observes the same holidays, administrative days, early dismissals and other closures as the East Orange School District. Parents should refer to the HFA school calendar for a detailed schedule. Harambee also adheres to the East Orange District-wide closures in response to weather, health and community emergencies. 

What curriculum is used at Harambee Family Academy? 

Harambee currently follows the Tools of the Mind curriculum, which prepares children to be learners and good students for life. Play is an important activity for 3-5 year olds, so the majority of the classroom instruction and learning takes place through games, working with partners/buddies, small groups, and play.

Will my child’s teacher hold parent conferences?

Your child’s teacher will schedule formal conferences to discuss your child’s progress twice during the school year. Parents may request additional progress discussions as needed.

May I pick my child up early from school?

Unless it is an emergency or your child has an urgent appointment scheduled, please do not arrive before 2:30pm to pick up your child.

Do I need to send my child to school with food?

HFA participates with the USDA Child Care Food Program through a partnership with East Orange Early Child Development, which enables us to provide a nutritious breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack to all students. Parents are not allowed to send their child to school with outside food.

Is there nap time?

Yes, all children are encouraged to nap or lie down for quiet time.

Does my child have to be potty trained to attend Harambee?

Harambee teaching staff will help younger children master toilet training. Children who are not fully potty trained must wear side fastening pull ups.

Can my child bring a favorite toy to school?

Parents should not send their child to school with toys and expensive items from home. Although our staff makes reasonable efforts to safeguard children’s belongings and clothing, we are not responsible for lost or lost damaged items.

At the end of May, a gorilla named Harambe was shot at the Cincinnati Zoo: this had to be done so that the monkey would not harm a four-year-old child who made his way to her enclosure. The murder of Harambe caused a heated discussion about who is to blame for what happened – the parents of the child, employees of a particular zoo, or zoos in general? Meduza tells what happened that day and whether it was possible to save the gorilla’s life.

On the afternoon of Saturday, May 28, a four-year-old boy somehow ended up in a gorilla enclosure. To do this, he had to crawl under the fence, overcome the wire fence and climb over the wall. According to other sources, he simply climbed over a 1.2-meter fence and made his way through the bushes. Be that as it may, as a result, the child fell from a height of 4.5 meters into a shallow reservoir, to which the monkeys had access.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

One of them, the western lowland gorilla Harambe, who turned 17 the day before, became interested in the boy. The monkey spent the next 10 minutes in close contact with the child, carrying him from one end of the enclosure to the other. The animal did not attack the unexpected guest and did not pose a direct threat to his life, but could accidentally hit the child on something with his head. To save the victim, the zoo staff decided to shoot Harambe. Two other gorillas that lived with him were unharmed.

“We are saddened by the loss of Harambe, but the child’s life was in danger and our Dangerous Animal Response Team needed to make a quick decision,” Zoo Director Thane Maynard said of the incident. According to him, when the gorilla dragged the boy around the enclosure, the child’s head hit the concrete.

A child with non-life-threatening injuries was taken to the hospital. In the evening of the same day he was discharged.

Who is to blame – the parents or the zoo staff?

The news of the animal’s murder has outraged many, including celebrities. Among them are Queen guitarist Brian May and British comedian Ricky Gervais.

“Why was that gorilla killed? No judgment, no reason. There is no excuse. Who will investigate?”

“Some gorillas seem to make better parents than some people.”

On Monday, several dozen people gathered near the zoo, who staged a protest and paid tribute to the memory of Harambe. At the gorilla monument in the zoo, people lay flowers and toys.

A gorilla memory page has been launched on Facebook, to which more than 120,000 users have already subscribed. Sympathizers draw pictures with a photo of Harambe and the caption: “I don’t know why they killed me. I looked after this lady’s child better than she herself.” Their opponents answer: “If you care more about the gorilla than the child, you have serious problems with your head.”

Gorilla defenders pay attention to the video, which shows how Harambe and the boy who fell towards him were holding hands. True, in the same video you can see how the monkey rather roughly dragged the child from one end of the reservoir to the other.

Two petitions have already appeared on Change.org in connection with the murder of Harambe. In the first one, they demand to start an investigation against the parents in order to establish their responsibility and make sure that nothing threatens the child at home. In the second, to adopt the “Kharamba law”, which would prescribe the responsibility of people guilty of creating situations leading to the death of rare animals (and Harambe was a representative of a species under threat of destruction). At the time of writing, the two petitions in total have gained almost half a million signatures.

Parents’ critics were answered by the Huffington Post, in a column that says – these were the most terrible moments in the mother’s life, and she deserves not censure, but sympathy. Parents themselves try not to “shine” in the press. They released an anonymous statement thanking the Cincinnati Zoo staff for their quick response: “We know this was a very difficult decision for them and that they are grieving the loss of the gorilla.”

Many wonder why the gorilla wasn’t simply put to sleep with a tranquilizer dart. Forbes came up with a detailed explanation: a tranquilizer instantly puts the victim to sleep only in the movies, but in reality it takes about five minutes until it works. Moreover, it would be a difficult five minutes, because usually gorillas get furious from this kind of shots, pull a dart out of their body and begin to run around the enclosure in anger until they finally fall asleep. Another reason not to shoot sleeping pills at Haramba is that the dart does not fly as accurately as a bullet, and it could hit the boy.

Another complaint against the zoo is that the boy got into the enclosure too easily – according to observers, the fence could have been more secure. The head of the zoo, Thane Maynard, replied that it had never occurred to anyone to criticize the fence for 38 years of its existence – it regularly performed its functions. However, all fences will be checked at the zoo. The section containing gorillas will be closed indefinitely.

Initially, the police did not find a reason for a criminal case in connection with the murder of Harambe, but on Tuesday they decided to take a closer look at the incident. At the same time, animal advocates filed a complaint with the US Department of Agriculture demanding that the zoo be punished for killing the gorilla. If the ministry agrees with the activists’ arguments, the organization faces a fine of up to $10,000.

Many businesses focus on creating products that meet consumer needs. Regardless of the industry, developing products and helping them find their place in the market is a viable career. In this process, both analysts and product managers are important. In this article, we will discuss what is a Product Analyst, what is a Product Manager and what is the difference between these career paths.

What is a product analyst?

A product analyst is a person who analyzes the market and identifies trends in order to predict the popularity of a product. They collect data through customer surveys and market research to provide product recommendations, marketing plans, and launch strategies. Companies may involve a product analyst in product design, marketing, and pricing decisions. The Product Analyst considers the company’s budget and mission to help it create a profitable product plan.

What is a product manager?

The product manager oversees the creation, production, marketing and sale of a product from its inception. While the product analyst advises on how the market might perceive the product, the manager makes the final decision on all aspects of the product. They work with all departments to create a product and are engaged in the strategic development of the supply chain and product distribution. They also determine which audience the product is aimed at in order to develop a marketing plan for that audience.

Education

Product analysts usually have a bachelor’s degree in marketing or business. Studying for this degree can teach the analyst important information about market research and customer behavior. They can take statistics classes to prepare themselves for doing their own market research. If they are interested in a particular industry, they can take classes in that area to gain insight into the market. For example, if they are interested in pharmaceuticals, they can take classes in chemistry. To qualify for higher-paying positions or leadership roles, a product analyst can pursue a master’s degree in business administration or marketing research.

Product managers may also have a bachelor’s degree, although their specialization may vary by industry. For example, if they manage products for technology or agriculture, earning a degree in that field can help them become familiar with the market and understand the fundamentals of product development and use in that industry. A product manager may also have a degree in a more general field such as communications, marketing, or business administration. These degrees can help a product manager understand business principles or marketing strategies, which can also be good for their careers.

Training

Product Analysts can receive on-site training on their firm or company’s software and business practices. This practice may vary depending on where you work. Their educational background may cover broader topics of market research and analysis. A product analyst may also be certified by the Marketing Research Association. This certification requires a certain amount of work experience, attending courses in associations and passing an exam.

Product managers usually have experience in other product related roles before becoming managers. This experience allows them to become familiar with the industry. Many product managers also pursue a master’s degree in business to further their education in business principles and management strategies. While it is not required to work as a product manager, some choose to earn the Certified Product Manager Credential from the International Product Marketing and Management Association. After passing the exam and gaining the required experience, certifications like these can enhance your resume if you want to move into product management.

Salary

The average salary for a product analyst in the US is $69,740 per year. However, where you work, the industry you work in, and how much experience you have can affect your salary. For example, in San Francisco, the average salary for a product analyst is $111,782 per year. This increase may be due to technology companies based in and around San Francisco. By comparison, product analysts living in Atlanta have an average salary of $64,883 per year.

A Product Manager is usually in an advanced position and therefore may be paid more than a Product Analyst regardless of location or industry. The average national product manager salary is $96,611 per year.

What Is Transitional Kindergarten? – Teaching Strategies

The concept of transitional kindergarten—also known as “TK”—first emerged in 2010, when California passed the Kindergarten Readiness Act. This act was created for 4-year-old children who turn 5 between September 2 and December 2, although California recently expanded the range to February 2 of the following year. Since these children have late birthdays, they traditionally missed the cutoff for kindergarten in California, which requires kindergarten students to be 5 years old by September 1.

Transitional kindergarten has recently picked up steam after California unveiled a $2.7 billion, 3-year plan to expand the offering, starting with rolling out a universal transitional kindergarten program this year.

Despite the new and exciting advancements developing in the transitional kindergarten space, many teachers, families, and school leaders have been left with unanswered questions. Fortunately, we’ve got answers.

 

What Is Transitional Kindergarten?

A steppingstone between preschool and kindergarten, transitional kindergarten is often referred to as the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience. It’s an entirely optional offering, since children in California are only required to start attending school once they turn 6 (although there is pending legislation that may require attending kindergarten). This means families can choose whether to enroll children in a transitional kindergarten program, sign them up for a private preschool program, or keep them home.

Transitional kindergarten programs are offered at no cost to families. Just like with kindergarten, schools can offer transitional kindergarten as a half-day (3 hours) or a full-day (6 hours) program. That said, California’s new Expanded Learning Opportunities Program requires local schools to offer a 9-hour school day that includes before- and after-school activities for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade.

Ultimately, the goal of transitional kindergarten is to provide children with late birthdays with a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum that will help them thrive in kindergarten. It can also help Spanish-speaking multilingual learners become more acquainted with English prior to kindergarten. This is particularly beneficial in a state with nearly 11 million Spanish speakers. In addition, since about 90% of brain growth happens before kindergarten, expanding access to early childhood education can help close the achievement gap (First Things First).¹

 

Transitional Kindergarten vs. Preschool and Pre-K

Unlike preschool and pre-kindergarten, transitional kindergarten is part of the public school system. While families can enroll any 4-year-old child in pre-K, transitional kindergarten is currently available to children who are 4 but will turn 5 between September 2 and February 2 the following year.

Transitional kindergarten also features more structured curriculums than those used in pre-K along with modified versions of kindergarten lessons. This includes important skills for reading, writing, and math, as well as learning social–emotional skills such as listening to directions and taking turns.

Facility requirements for transitional kindergarten are the same as for kindergarten. As a result, new and existing facilities will need to ensure transitional kindergarten classrooms are close to drop-off and bus loading zones, allow for play yard supervision, include windows, provide height-appropriate sinks for children, and have restrooms located within the classroom or the kindergarten complex. To ensure providers are meeting these requirements, California has allocated about $490 million to build new transitional kindergarten facilities or update existing ones (Officer of Governor Gavin Newsom, 2021).²

 

Transitional Kindergarten in California

As we mentioned, California has started rolling out a universal transitional kindergarten program as part of its public school system, making it available to children regardless of family income. Although most school districts will receive funding for their transitional kindergarten programs based on the average number of children in attendance throughout the school year, approximately 15% of districts will not receive funding (Aguilera, 2022).³ Known as basic aid districts, these exempted districts are among the wealthiest in California (Aguilera, 2022).³

About 100,000 children in California attended transitional kindergarten programs in 2021 (D’Souza, 2021a).⁴ The new universal transitional kindergarten program has started accepting younger children and aims to ensure all 4-year-olds in California—about 400,000 children in total—are eligible for transitional kindergarten by the 2025-2026 school year (D’Souza, 2021b).⁵ This is a game-changing initiative for a state with almost 3 million children under the age of 5 (D’Souza, 2021b).⁵ 

Requirements for TK teachers

Transitional kindergarten teachers are currently required to have a multiple-subject teaching credential, which is the same credential teachers need for all the elementary grades.

By 2023, transitional kindergarten teachers will also need to complete an additional 24 units of early childhood education coursework or the equivalent, depending on their employer’s requirements, or they’ll need to hold a child-development permit. Once transitional kindergarten teachers meet the necessary requirements, they can look forward to smaller class sizes with a ratio of 12 children per teacher or teaching assistant. California hopes to transition to 10 children per teacher by the 2025-2026 school year. Furthermore, while school districts have the final word on compensation, transitional kindergarten teachers can typically expect the same pay as kindergarten teachers.

 

Strengthening School-Family Connections in TK

Transitional kindergarten will mark the first time many families send their children to school, making it an ideal opportunity to start building strong family-school partnerships that can set young learners up for success.

According to the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child (2004), young children experience the world through their interpersonal relationships.⁶ Since these relationships affect almost all aspects of a child’s development, it’s crucial that transitional kindergarten programs nurture family engagement, such as by

• fostering an inviting, uplifting environment where families feel welcomed, regardless of whether they’re visiting their children’s classrooms or the school’s front office;
• engaging families in conversations, especially at the start of the school year, to better understand each child’s home life; and
• creating opportunities to connect with families throughout the year and maintaining an open dialogue on how families can support their children’s learning.

Transition to Kindergarten (TK) is a legislatively established and authorized program for children who are at least 4-years-old by August 31 and have been identified through a screening process to be in need of additional preparation to be successful kindergarten students in the following school year.   

OSPI published data on February 1, 2023, showing that TK is an effective strategy for closing opportunity gaps. 

OSPI will adopt emergency rules for the 2023-24 school year consistent with the criteria identified in House Bill 1550 (HB 1550) as passed by the legislature. 

Bulletin No. 036-23 provides information about the upcoming rulemaking process and guidance for local education agencies implementing a TK program. Updated rules and guidance will be posted to the OSPI website.

The employee has the right to terminate the employment contract by notifying the employer in writing no later than two weeks in advance, unless another period is established by this Code or other federal law. The specified period begins the next day after the employer receives the employee’s application for dismissal.

By agreement between the employee and the employer, the employment contract may be terminated even before the expiration of the notice of dismissal.

In cases where the employee’s application for dismissal on his own initiative (of his own free will) is due to the impossibility of continuing his work (enrollment in an educational organization, retirement and other cases), as well as in cases of established violation by the employer of labor legislation and other regulatory legal acts containing labor law norms, local regulations, terms of a collective agreement, agreement or employment contract, the employer is obliged to terminate the employment contract within the period specified in the employee’s application.

After the expiration of the termination notice, the employee has the right to stop working. On the last day of work, the employer is obliged to issue a work book to the employee or provide information about labor activity (Article 66.1 of this Code) with this employer, issue other documents related to work, at the written request of the employee and make the final settlement with him.

If the employment contract has not been terminated after the expiration of the termination notice and the employee does not insist on dismissal, the employment contract continues.

1. article 124: if an employee falls ill during vacation, the employer must extend his vacation;
2. article 256: both spouses have the right to be on parental leave at the same time if different children are involved;
3. articles 77 and 81: no matter how often an employee takes a sick leave, this cannot be a reason for dismissal;
4. articles 60, 62, 379: the boss does not have the right to shift the duties of other employees onto the employee;
5. article 128: an employee has the right to leave at his own expense (up to 5 calendar days) when it comes to the birth of a child in the family, marriage registration or the death of someone close.
