How old can you be to work as a nanny – from 16 and older

When young parents are faced with the question of choosing a nanny for a child, few have a good idea of what age she should be. It all depends on the range of duties of the babysitter and the financial capabilities of the employer. The advantage of young nannies can be considered good physical health, and older nannies – work experience. There are many exceptions to these stereotypes.
In the article we will consider the features of nannies of different age groups, restrictions on work in accordance with the current legislation, which nanny to give preference to – young or old.

From what age can you be a nanny and up to what age

In Russia, even teenagers cope with the duties of educators. Many have younger brothers and sisters, others just like to mess around with babies. Babysitting is a good way to earn money in a fair and safe way.
From what age you can work as a nanny, school-age children are already beginning to be interested.
The state today allows hiring boys and girls from the age of 14 with the consent of their parents or guardians, and from the age of 15 a teenager can make a decision on his own.
The number of hours of the working week for a teenager is strictly regulated by Article 92 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation:

  • 14-16 years old when combining work with study – 2.5 hours a day, 12 hours a week;
  • 14-16 years old without combining work with study – 5 hours a day, 24 hours a week;
  • 16-18 years old when combining work with study – 4 hours a day, 17.5 hours a week;
  • 16-18 years old without combining work with study – 7 hours a day, 35 hours a week.

If parents need to leave the child for a short time during the day, a teenager as a babysitter is the best fit.

Young babysitter distinctions

A young nanny, who herself was a child not so long ago, can easily establish contact with children. She will be active: she will play with them with pleasure, run on the street, take up drawing, sculpting, and share her creative skills and abilities.
Thanks to excellent health and physical data, the young teacher will not complain about feeling unwell, will keep up with the child everywhere and even carry him in her arms.
Usually, young nannies for a child strive to become necessary, gain experience, so they listen to advice and comments addressed to them, make mistakes, but they also learn from them. In addition, they try to educate kids in accordance with modern rules, taking into account pedagogical recommendations and refusing to be conservative.
For their work, as a rule, young babysitters do not require a large fee.
The disadvantages include the lack of necessary knowledge in the upbringing and development of children. In some cases, nannies do not understand how to properly care for a child, they lack experience, since they do not yet have their own family and children.
There is also a possibility that the nanny will take up her personal life and leave the ward, who managed to become attached to her.

Features of the experimental

A teacher of respectable age has an extensive store of knowledge and commands respect from the child and all family members. The nanny knows not only how to properly care for children of different ages, but also how to run a household, what menu to choose for your child.
During work, she will not make spontaneous decisions, showing consistency and calmness.
Usually nannies in years are reliable assistants that you can rely on. As a rule, her own children have already grown up, she is not burdened with a family, so she will be able to pay maximum attention to her child.
Of the minuses, it is worth noting the likely health problems, as well as established views on life, in which, perhaps, the nanny does not agree with the child’s parents, especially regarding methods of education.

Is it possible to work as a nanny at the age of 13-16: follow the law

Persons under 18 have the right to work, but their employment is limited in time and subject to certain requirements.
A teenager of 14-16 years old can officially find a job in accordance with the law if he is not studying full-time (or has stopped studying, taking into account legislative norms) and he has completed general education. In the period not occupied with studies, the teenager is allowed harmless and uncomplicated work.
Those under the age of 14 are only entitled to work in certain areas:

  • concert;
  • cinema and theater;
  • circus.

According to Art. 63 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation there is a prerequisite: work should not harm health – physical or moral. Thus, to the question of whether it is possible to work as a nanny at the age of 13, labor legislation gives a negative answer.
For the employment of children under 16 years of age, the written consent of the parents or persons replacing them is required.
Is it possible to work as a nanny at the age of 16, what does the law say? For minors, the legislation provides for a reduced working time, while the production standards are calculated on the basis of general indicators in proportion to the hours worked.
The official employment of a teenager provides for the provision of documents:

  • passports;
  • documents on education or certificate of suspension of studies;
  • work book;
  • medical certificate;
  • permission of parents (custodians) and guardianship authorities for employment (if the child is under 16 years old).

For those who combine study and work, payment is provided in accordance with the hours worked. Every year, teenagers, like adults, have the right to take paid leave of 31 calendar days. The employer does not have the right to refuse to provide it, to replace the leave with compensation or to interrupt it ahead of schedule.

Nanny for a child by age: advantages and disadvantages

More on the topic:

People have many personal and professional characteristics that do not depend on age. Contrary to the stereotype that older nannies act not according to the employer’s needs, but according to their own established standards, innate stubbornness can also be observed in young girls.
Age is not affected by appearance and grooming. If the nanny is not indifferent to her own appearance and health, she will have a pleasant and fresh look even in adulthood, even in comparison with younger colleagues who do not take care of themselves.
A person’s readiness for change and learning new things depends solely on the personality, and not on age. Many nannies try to develop themselves, learn new methods of raising children, and even in everyday terms are ready to cope with the electronics and appliances that are present in the house where they work.
Does not depend on age and work experience in families. Sometimes a woman becomes a nanny only after she retires, having experience only in raising her own children and grandchildren. And a young girl can have a lot of practical knowledge and skills.
There are also qualities that are inherent in people at a certain age.

Adolescents aged 14 to 18

Often, 14-18-year-old girls try to earn extra money as babysitters in their free time from school. They want to find a job in order to have their own finances and be at least a little independent of their parents’ money.
Is it legal to babysit at 14? Such a nanny can be hired by those who need to leave their child unattended by their mother for a couple of hours a day. In this age category, there are responsible and serious people, but it should be understood that parents are fully responsible for the safety and health of the child.
Before entrusting your child to a girl who was a child herself, ask her questions:

  1. What experience does she have with children?
  2. How long does she need a job?
  3. Is she going to connect her future professional activity with the upbringing of children?

Perhaps the girl is studying at a pedagogical college or institute, a medical school. Then she needs practice herself.
Benefits for 14-18 year old nannies:

  • desire to follow the instructions of the employer, diligently fulfill duties;
  • energy;
  • the ability to quickly find contact with children of different ages.

Even the lack of experience in raising children cannot be called a significant disadvantage, since at this age teenagers are easily trained.

Students and youth

Adult young people usually have already formed the skills of behavior in everyday life and communication with people of different ages. Babysitting for students is suitable in many ways. However, most of them perceive child care as a temporary part-time job.
You don’t have to count on the fact that the nanny will stay in your family for a long time. As soon as a more suitable option turns up for her, she will leave you. The main disadvantage of this situation is that the child will have to get used to a new person.
This age category of babysitters is distinguished by activity, the ability to present themselves favorably, and competently write a resume. Often they themselves choose the family where they will work, knowing for sure what kind of salary they need and what functions they will have to perform.
Such girls have a formed character, established habits, a stable psyche, and most importantly, experience in raising children. They are always in demand in families.
Pluses for nannies from 18 to 30:

  • unmarried marital status;
  • responsible attitude to duties;
  • good physical data;
  • willingness to play outdoor games;
  • knowledge of modern gadgets, the ability to navigate the Internet.

If the nanny has a driver’s license, this will be an additional advantage: she will be able to pick up the child from kindergarten or school, take him to additional classes and entertainment.
However, such girls are mainly focused on making money and may leave if a more tempting offer looms on the horizon. In addition, they need to arrange a personal life, which means that as soon as the girl acquires the status of a married woman, she will most likely stop working as a nanny.

30 to 45 years old

Many thirty-year-old women can already share the experience of raising and developing their own children. They treat work with great responsibility, especially if it is connected with kids.
At the same time, they put their own family above all else, without sacrificing its interests for the sake of professional duties. Having a child, they can become pregnant again and go on maternity leave at the expense of the employer. When hiring women of this age category as a nanny, it is worth asking how having a family of your own will affect duties towards pupils.
It is good if the nanny lives close to the employer. This increases the likelihood that she will stay in the family for a long time.

50 and up

Women who are 50 or older are subconsciously perceived by the child’s parents as alternative grandmothers. They often make great babysitters for years to come, until your child no longer needs a caregiver.
Such women are trusted with both babies and older children, given that they have experience in raising their own children. Even for some inexperienced parents, they can be a great example.
Age babysitting benefits:

  1. Willingness to stay in the foster family for a long time.
  2. The ability to adequately perceive problematic situations: illness, accidents with a child, teenage psychological trauma. They can help find a way out of the current circumstances.
  3. The desire to establish contact with both parents and the child in order to stay in the family as long as possible. It is not uncommon for nannies and children to become sincerely attached to each other.

“Drugs and gunfights – this is what my usual day looked like”

Mikhail Lapidus, a police officer from the US of Russian origin, came to Pushchino with a speech and gave a frank interview to our publication.

Recently, an unusual meeting took place in the Pushchino Central Cultural Center “Vertical”. Residents of the science city talked with the now famous blogger Mikhail Lapidus. In the 90s, the man emigrated with his family to America, where he subsequently lived for 24 years. Fate decreed that for 16 years Mikhail worked as a police officer in the city of Oakland, California. During his professional career, he has been a patrolman, forensic scientist, and head of a children’s room. The Russian-American cop told the Oki-info correspondent about how he was met by the New World and about the peculiarities of working in the unofficial criminal capital of the state. True, instead of an interview, a monologue turned out.

— I was born and raised in Samara. Until the eighth grade, he studied there at a school with an English bias. Mom insisted, but I didn’t like it, so after the 8th grade I went to college, after which I entered a pedagogical university. I wanted to teach history.

In the 1990s, confusion began in the USSR, they stopped paying salaries. Relatives from my father’s side, who lived in the United States for a long time, invited us to permanent residence. All our lives we huddled in a communal apartment, shared living space with cockroaches and two other families. Father – a famous engineer, did not get out of VDNKh, had a bunch of patents, but all the merits were taken by his party boss with the “correct” surname. We were also “knocked over” with a queue for the car. Mother is a teacher with an allied name, an apartment was intended for her, but her supervisor got it. So to speak, we accumulated and we submitted all the documents necessary for departure to the embassy. AT 92nd exit approved. I did not want to leave the country, I am a patriot. For the sake of my grandmother and parents, for the sake of decency, they asked my opinion, but I perfectly understood that without them I had nothing to do here.

***

— At that time, we were told on television and on the radio how well people live in free America and how bad things are here. The myth was quickly dispelled.

We flew out in October 1992, it was already snowing and it was cold. In Los Angeles, we were met by the sun, the weather was +30. That’s where the pluses end. There was an economic crisis in the United States, the riots associated with the beating of Rodney King had just ended, half the city was completely burned (we are talking about the Los Angeles riot, which caused the death of 53 people – ed. note). We don’t really know the language, there is no money, there is no work, whites are oppressed – in some areas it was impossible to appear at all, they could be soaked simply for the light color of the skin.

On one of the first days, when we were standing in line to pass the mandatory medical examination for all migrants, some Mexicans tried to rob us. Theft was commonplace. But it’s been worse. Once, in search of work, I was waiting for a bus, which, by the way, in the USA always runs on time. At a stop right at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and the Highlands (now it has been redone, then there were heaps of garbage, drunks, drug addicts and prostitutes lying around) a mass brawl broke out between gangs of blacks and Mexicans. A crowd of people with crowbars, chains and weapons fought to the death, the locals fled, and I did not know what to do, I just stood and waited for my bus. Not kneaded – lucky.

***

— For several months we were helped by special semi-commercial services, they gave us free food that was past its expiration date. They did it in order to get tax breaks.

We had enough savings to pay a deposit and pay for a month’s rent in the cheapest apartment in the West Hollywood area. It was a real garbage dump where poor immigrants from the Soviet Union lived. Some of our compatriots still remain in these quarters, it is more convenient for them. There are even shop signs in Russian, Russian TV broadcasts. But in order to achieve at least something and get a good job in a foreign country, you need to know the language, and know it well.

At that time it was impossible to get a job officially, at that time, according to the law, a US citizen had to pay a minimum of $ 4. 25 per hour, excluding taxes and insurance. In the emigrant environment, of course, this was not practiced, they paid much less – about two dollars in cash. I worked handouts, I folded T-shirts in the dye house, I came home with purple hands that couldn’t be washed. At the same time attended language classes in college, free of charge. I found people who could pay for my education.

A few months later he got a job in a restaurant run by Armenians. Good people already adapted to capitalism. My mother, for example, could not work there, because she is a Soviet person who is not used to the fact that a business has an owner who indicates what, how and when to do it. They paid a little there, but enough to live on, plus they were allowed to take food home.

***

The first few years there was a terrible nostalgia, I wanted to go back, and the difficult conditions of American life contributed to this even more. No friends, no one to talk to. Talking on the phone was very expensive, 2 minutes of communication was worth as much as an hour of my work. He wrote letters, something came through, something did not. After emigrating, I visited Russia again at 94th, for family reasons. Stayed here for three weeks. By this time, there was already real devastation in the country and I realized that I would not return here again. And the next 21 years he lived in the States.

I got married in 1996, and the next year my son was born. The family had to be supported by something, completely different incomes were required. I came across an announcement: there is a mass recruitment to the police. By this time, citizenship had already been issued. I came, filled out a “letter of interest” in Auckland, after which I was invited for testing, a polygraph, a medical board and other exams. Then silence – no one called back or wrote. He spat, filed documents with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. When they found out that I was Russian-speaking, they jumped to the ceiling, because almost 700 thousand people out of the population of the district are immigrants from the CIS. According to the law, after graduating from the academy, a person must work in prison for two years. But the department was interested in me, as this would allow them to save on a translator, so they issued a paper, according to which my work in prison is reduced to 8-9months. I passed most of the exams, when suddenly I got a call from Auckland. It turned out that there was a snag in the piece of paper about education. I found a school, passed the test, and was accepted into the Oakland Police Academy.

***

— The academy trains for six months, then three more are field tests. 34 people entered with me, 21 reached the field, three more were eliminated later. There were thieves. A relative of one of the city officials, who weighed twice as much as me, really wanted a place in the police. Even upon admission, she was canceled physical tests, motivated by the fact that she would pull herself up during training. Eventually she flew out. They really teach, if they fight, then for real, they use the same pepper spray as in real work.

I remember well my first day on patrol. I come to the room for formations, all the veterans are already sitting, according to the sign, newcomers cannot sit down without permission until all the old people are seated. The curator introduced me to a mentor, a Filipino boxer. I went to get the car keys, shotgun, papers. We got into the car, I told him: “Yes, sir. No sir. And he told me: “Tie up with formality, so we communicate only in public. Let’s agree that for a couple of days you just sit and look at me and do nothing else. It took me two hours. As a result, by the end of the first shift, I already taxied, wrote a report, and even arrested one type. Immediately sang with a mentor. However, the officer considered that a team that works so well will bring many problems. And after the probationary period, I was sent to another district.

Then the real work began with a 10-hour work schedule.

***

— Auckland is a city where everything is done through one place. The former governor ruined the state by signing a law to close the military base and production located on the territory. Then half of the population was left without work and switched to drugs, alcohol, theft and prostitution.

Historically, Oakland has a high crime rate, the city has the highest homicide rate in California and tenth in the United States among cities with a population of more than 250,000 people. Gunfights between gang members are common, I’ve been involved in several myself. In broad daylight they can kill someone on the main street.

Auckland has a large black population. At the beginning of the 20th century, Chrysler factories opened there, shipyards worked in the port, and ships were built. The peak of the city’s development fell on the period of the Second World War. The “whites” working there went to the front. There were vacancies left, where people rushed from all over America, mainly from the southern states, and these are mostly blacks. When the war ended and the former residents returned, they wanted their jobs back. Conflicts began, many blacks were fired on the principle of segregation.

The decline of the shipbuilding industry aggravated the situation. The western part of the city, adjacent to the port, became poorer and poorer due to lack of work. People began to move to the eastern part, where automobile and tractor factories were located. But over time, this industry also left the city, and Auckland gained notoriety.

The standard of living was falling, because of the large port, which is difficult to control by the authorities, the supply of drugs from Southeast Asia and Mexico improved. Criminal groups began to organize themselves, for example, the world-famous Hells Angels motorcycle gang has its own branch in Auckland, it even includes lawyers and doctors. In general, murders, drugs, prostitution and theft – this is the usual shift of a California police officer.

Recently, a lot has changed, before drug traffickers ran away when they heard the sound of a siren, now you can drive close to them and they do not pay attention. All because of the imperfection of the legislation, every action of a policeman can be challenged and crime takes advantage of this. The press inflates such stories, I know many examples.

***

When I entered the academy, the rules were stricter. Now liberalism rules, when recruiting there are conditions according to which a certain number of people must get into the group by race, gender, even by sexual orientation. To not hurt anyone. They take advantage of this, “rotten apples” seep in, but they are quickly kicked out.

There was a woman who did not like to pay for herself in a cafe. She came, took coffee, showed the badge and that’s it. Then she was fired. Once an officer wanted to buy a car at auction, when a higher price was offered for it, he took out a gun, started waving it and shouting that he was from the police and the car should go to him. He doesn’t work anymore.

There is a lot of talk in Russia about bribes. There is no such thing in the States, at least among the police. For 16 years of work, no one offered me money, this is a crime, the policeman will not take it. He earns decently, he has insurance, including dental and oculist services, vacation, career growth. No one wants to lose all this because of a crumpled hundred dollar bill. A normal person values his job, I really liked working in the police, even the worst day on patrol is much better than the best day at the office.

***

— I retired in 2015. There was a lot of free time. I visited Russia. Moscow has changed a lot, it has become beautiful. Honestly, now even in the largest city in America, you can’t walk the streets at night without incident. You can. And Samara, on the contrary, became worse. When we left, it was a green city, now there are ugly new buildings all around and people are fighting over parking spaces.

In 2017, Dmitry Puchkov, better known as Goblin, invited me to an interview for his channel. Our video has over 700,000 views. Dmitry Yuryevich said that it would be nice for me to start my own channel, especially since I have something to tell.

Daycare Pros and Cons: What Parents Should Know

  • Deciding to send your child to a daycare facility can be an overwhelming decision for parents.
  • Since many parents work, daycare services meet an essential need within our communities.
  • There are advantages and disadvantages to daycare. Weighing the pros and cons of daycare can help you understand the best options for your family.

The pregnancy test is positive! Congratulations—you’re going to have a baby!

The first few weeks after finding out I was going to have a child, my mind was flooded with thoughts and questions about how to navigate the upcoming journey.

Should I breastfeed or formula feed? Should I co-sleep or sleep train? Which pediatrician should we use? Should I stay home with the baby or find a daycare?

These are all important questions to consider, but the decision for childcare was the most complex for me. I just needed to know what was best for my child, but getting that question answered was so challenging! It seemed impossible to consider leaving him for eight hours a day with just anyone.

I wanted the confidence that I was doing what was best for my child’s social and emotional development. I was curious about the best age to start daycare and how I could stay bonded with him after returning to work.

I wanted to know what the “right” decision was.

Turns out, I wasn’t the only one asking those questions.

Whether your child is an infant or a preschooler, deciding whether or not to leave her and go back to work is an emotional and complicated issue for many families.

When considering the pros and cons of daycare, there is a lot of research to wade through. In this article, we’ll examine the facts about childcare facilities. We’ll also discuss the building blocks that set your child up for success and things to consider when making your childcare decisions.

After reading this article, you will have the information necessary to feel confident about wherever you send your baby.

What Is a Daycare For?

A daycare provides daytime supervision and safe-keeping for individuals unable to care for themselves. Most childcare centers serve children with a minimum age of 6 weeks to a maximum age of 12 years.

There are many different types of child care centers that fit this description:

  • In-home daycare is supervised care in a residential home. The care provider may be a family member or friend. There are also state-licensed homes that allow for more children when appropriate supervision is provided.
  • Daycare facilities provide center-based child care. Governmental guidelines usually regulate these facilities, including the requirement to be CPR certified.
  • Preschool programs are educational programs for infants to kindergarten-aged children and are typically offered as an extension of an already-established elementary school. This would include religious and Montessori schools as well.

The term “daycare center” in this article references all of the above options.

Why Are Parents Sending Their Children To Daycare?

Parents typically choose a daycare center for their children based on two reasons: Accessibility and affordability.

Some families rely on two incomes. Others are single-parent households.

Some families are located away from their extended family and cannot rely on their help. Some communities lack reliable and safe nanny/sitter options.

Some parents struggle with being home all day and not working. Some children are social butterflies and thrive in bigger groups with more opportunities to interact with peers.

There are numerous reasons why parents choose to send their children to a daycare center.

Research shows that a child has both advantages and disadvantages when sent somewhere outside the home.

What Are the Advantages of Daycare Centers?

From an early age, children can socialize and learn from their peers, so sending a child to daycare can help them develop these essential skills. In a daycare setting, children are exposed to a variety of other kids from different backgrounds and with different personalities. This can help them learn how to interact with others, share toys and materials, and resolve conflicts.

In addition, daycare providers often plan activities and outings that provide learning opportunities. For example, trips to the park or local library can expose children to new people and ideas. As a result, daycare can play an important role in helping children learn and grow.

Time in daycare as a young child may also have long-term positive effects on a child development. A longitudinal study by the National Institute for Health found that adolescents who were in a “high-quality child care setting” in their childhood ranked measurably higher on academic and cognitive achievement scores.

The same study also found that children in high-quality to moderate-quality care were less likely to have “acting-out behaviors” when compared to their peers from lower-quality care settings.

High-quality care was measured by three criteria of the caregiver: their warmth, support, and cognitive stimulation of the children they were supervising.

Fewer “acting-out behaviors” and higher academic success are significant advantages to sending your son or daughter to a daycare center.

What Are the Disadvantages of Daycare Centers?

The same study from the National Institute of Health revealed a few disadvantages to daycare centers.

One main disadvantage was that adolescents who had been in care outside the home for the most time reported a higher likelihood of impulsivity and high risk-taking activity at age 15 than did teens who spent less time in child care.

One conclusion may be that the advantages of daycare lessen as time in care increases.

It’s also important to note that the cognitive achievement found in those who attended daycare is very slight, meaning it could also be contributed to other factors not measured through the study.

Daycare Pros and Cons

There are both pros and cons to placing your child in daycare. On the plus side, daycare can provide a safe and stimulating environment for a child to learn and grow. Toddlers in daycare have the opportunity to socialize with other children and adults, and they can learn important skills such as sharing, turn-taking, and communication. In addition, daycare can provide relief for parents struggling to manage work and child-rearing responsibilities.

On the other hand, daycare can be expensive and it may only be available in some areas. In addition, not all daycare facilities are equal in quality, so it’s essential to do your research before enrolling your child. Some parents also worry that their child will miss out on important bonding and family quality time if they are in daycare.

Before you decide if daycare is appropriate for your family, it may help to consider the pros and cons side by side:

Pros of daycare

  • Reliable and consistent care: Probably the main advantage most parents identify when they are considering daycare options is reliable and consistent care. The bigger the facility, the more workers and supervision are required. This equals more hands to care for the children and more eyes to supervise them.
  • Positive Support: “It takes a village” is a common term used to describe the challenge of raising children. Children who have consistent direction and guidance tend toward higher levels of resiliency and self-confidence as they age. The positive support of other caring, nurturing adults is not only empowering for young children, but it is also helpful to stressed, overworked parents. When you trust your caregivers, you can rest assured your child has their needs met when you are unable to do so. It takes a village!
  • Social Skills and Language Development: Being around other children and adults increases the number of words and phrases a young child hears in their day. This increases their social skills and language development.
  • Educational Activities: Most daycare centers offer educational activities. This creates a school-like environment that can ease the transition to elementary school when the time comes. These activities also help children with motor skills development and potty training.
  • Possible Cheaper option: Thanks to government funding and multiple families paying tuition, a daycare center is typically a cheaper option than having a nanny or babysitter.
  • Immunity Booster: Children exposed to more illnesses earlier in life tend to experience a higher level of immunity as they age. So although your young child may have a higher illness rate initially (see the cons of daycare), there are reasons to believe this will serve as an immunity booster throughout their adolescence and adulthood!

Cons of daycare

  • Higher Illness Rate: A common disadvantage for those who utilize daycare services is a higher illness rate among children. With close quarters and naturally poor hygiene of young children, any contagious illness spreads rapidly. Sick children love to share their germs!
  • Strict Sick Policies: The ease at which illness spreads requires many daycare centers to abide by strict sick policies. These policies may require a certain amount of days kids have to stay away from the center after having symptoms or being sent home if symptoms appear at the center.
  • Unexpected Missed Work: When children have to stay home due to illness, this creates instability in the parent’s schedule and unexpected missed work. Many workers don’t have enough sick leave available, so they may have to choose a low-quality childcare option for their sick kids instead of staying home with them.
  • Expensive: Depending on where you live and the quality of daycare centers available to you, the right daycare for you may end up being quite expensive. Some parents express that their childcare situation costs them in tuition what they make going to work.
  • Daytime Schedule: Due to most childcare facilities providing a typical daytime schedule, parents and caregivers are reliant on the daycare hours offered. If they need to work overtime or a first/third shift, they are typically unable to utilize daycare services.
  • Learned Negative Behaviors: Although social skills development is seen as a pro to daycare services, the downside may also be learned negative behaviors. Many children in daycare settings often fight for attention, so they may pick up poor habits to gain staff’s attention which will undoubtedly leak over into life at home. They also may begin to mimic others’ words, both the good and the bad language! Sometimes, when verbal skills are low, aggressive behavior may be witnessed due to their urge to get their needs met.

Should You Send Your Child To Daycare?

No one will argue that a child being with their parents in their own home is the best, most secure option when it is available.

However, as the previous facts represent, children who are sent to daycare, whether in a small homelike setting or a larger school-like structure, can and do thrive!

It may seem hard to fathom being away from your child. Still, the families who choose daycare either out of necessity or for social benefit often report happy children and happy parents.

No one can say what option is best for your child. You are the expert on them!

Evaluate your circumstances, talk to trusted adults and professionals in your life, and look through your options. When you do make your final decision, trust your parenting gut! It is rarely wrong.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Two newborn girls died after they were found in the bathroom of a child care center Thursday evening on the Northwestern Medicine campus in Streeterville.

Police said, shortly before 7 p.m., officers responded to the Bernice Lavin Early Childhood Education Center in the 400 block of East Ontario Street, where someone had found two newborn girls in a bathroom.

According to unconfirmed police dispatch reports, a janitor was called to clean up some blood, when she found two the babies in a trash bag.

The twin girls were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A cause of death had not been determined as of Friday afternoon, as more study and investigation is needed, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The center said in a statement that a staff member “experienced a medical emergency that resulted in the unanticipated delivery of newborn twin babies. ”

The child care center is a facility used solely by Northwestern Medicine employees, but Northwestern stressed that the woman who gave birth was not a Northwestern Medicine employee. She is employed by Bright Horizons daycare, which is providing emotional and mental health support to their employees.

A Northwestern spokesperson added in a separate statement that, “no daycare children were involved or impacted by the situation. The Chicago Fire and Police Departments were called. We are working with CPD regarding this incident and [are] unable to comment further at this time.”

A Northwestern spokesperson said he could not comment further, saying the hospital is working with CPD regarding the incident.

The childcare center said they’re offering emotional and mental health support to all employees and their families.

“We ask for support and respect for everyone involved at this time as we grieve together and work to support each other and any ensuing investigation,” a spokesperson said in an email.

Area 3 detectives were investigating. A Police Department spokesperson would not clarify if the probe is a criminal investigation, and would only confirm they are investigating a death.

No one was in custody Friday.

Russian police officer from the USA Mikhail Lapidus talks about child drug dealers and a grandmother with a Colt

In the 1990s, 17-year-old Misha Lapidus moved with his parents from Russia to California. There he graduated from the police academy and served in the US police for almost 17 years. After retiring, he returned to Russia, starred in films, writes a book and shares his memories.

Mikhail Lapidus is known in Russia as a successful blogger and an expert on the various intricacies of police work in the United States. On his YouTube channel Edge of Sunset, for several years now he has been talking about serving in the American police, conducting analysis of movie bloopers in crime films and discussing juvenile delinquency and parenting with subscribers.

Five years ago, after almost 17 years of service with the Oakland Police Department (California), Mikhail retired due to injury.

“A lot has happened in these 17 years,” recalls Mikhail. – I retired due to a combination of various injuries, injuries, accidents, falls … Because when you work on patrol on the street, something physical happens all the time. It happens that you need to run, jump over fences, climb roofs, attics, basements. When I was a forensic scientist, I still worked on patrol, helping patrol officers to detain criminals. There were two or three major accidents when they just pulled me out of the car. In total, this gave such a result that they said: “That’s it, due to health reasons, you can no longer work at full strength.” And you can’t work half-heartedly.

Mikhail Lapidus, Dmitry Puchkov / Photo: vk.com

During this time, the officer managed to work as a patrolman, forensic specialist and head of the children’s room in the Oakland police – one of the most criminal cities in the United States. He started running his channel in 2010, and the well-known blogger and translator Dmitry Puchkov, aka Goblin, pushed him to this.

“We got to know him interestingly, on the Internet,” says Mikhail Lapidus. — I have been his viewer for a long time, I watched his videos on YouTube a lot. I was still in the USA at that time, and in one of the videos Dmitry Yuryevich said that, in America, the police are killing blacks, something like that. And I wrote to him: “Hello, I am your viewer, I work in the US police. I disagree with you a little, I can tell you how it actually works.”

Upon receiving this message, Puchkov invited Mikhail to a meeting and recorded an interview for his channel.

– I came once, twice, three times, our interviews got many, many views. As a result, he told me: “Stop coming here, shoot yourself!”. And so I started blogging,” our interlocutor shared.

Now there are more than 70 thousand subscribers on the channel of Mikhail Lapidus. A few years ago, he returned to Russia, and now he regularly meets with his viewers in person. And recently, he even starred in a science fiction film by St. Petersburg director Alexei Talyzin “Something for Nothing”.

A neo-noir fantasy film based on Robert Sheckley’s short story “For Nothing” was filmed entirely in St. Petersburg, despite the fact that the plot is set in the United States.

– Alexey Talyzin – a very talented director. I really liked how the work on the film went,” said Mikhail Lapidus. – They contacted me, at first they wanted to ask me to be a consultant, that is, just to show them how, roughly speaking, to put on handcuffs correctly, as we do in America, how to read rights and all sorts of such trifles. We even filmed a video where I explain to them how to do it all. And after a while, I was offered to play a small role there, to practically play myself.

The blogger especially liked the high-quality scenery, like two drops of water similar to the real “nature”:

— There were scenery of the hospital, and there was an impression that, yes, I ended up in the hospital. I have been to different hospitals in the USA – yes, everything was done perfectly. A cafe was built from scratch on level ground, such that you can’t distinguish it from the real one. It looks like everything is happening on the outskirts of Los Angeles, with the San Bernardino desert behind … I have not seen this in Hollywood. But they shoot on location there, you don’t have to go far, you drive for half an hour – and here is nature. And here everything was done with amazing scenery and special effects.

Filming of the film “Something for Nothing” / Photo: kinopoisk.ru

But filming a movie, writing memoirs, a successful blog and meeting with fans are all the fruits of many years of service, which there is something to remember.

Some of the most difficult memories for Mikhail are associated with miracles

— I came to 9:00 p.m. and worked on juvenile delinquents until 07:00 a.m. At the same time, I also dealt with missing people,” our interlocutor recalls.

True, he encountered crimes against children in all his positions. And often, unfortunately, minors are just “expendable”.

— Children are very often used by adults to avoid responsibility themselves. For example, there are entire families where adults force their children to sell drugs. Because when an 11-12-year-old child sells drugs, if he is caught, he will most likely get nothing. Not only will we let him go, we will detain him, we will issue him, but he will be released from the children’s court, they will not be imprisoned, – says Mikhail Lapidus. “For such people, this is just a way to make money.

Photo: Keiko Hiromi/globallookpress.com

There are even worse situations, and they are by no means rare:

— Children are used for prostitution. Young children do not always understand what is happening. For them, if an adult said, then everything is fine. Sometimes. Some, of course, understand and do it consciously, but some do not. For them, it’s a game, a big game. Plus, again, money.

According to a former Oakland police officer, in addition to their own parents, American pop culture also has a great influence on children in the United States. It largely contributes to the romanticization of crime.

– When a child watches all sorts of videos on the Internet and on TV, in which, roughly speaking, the gangster lifestyle is promoted: gold teeth, wads of money, expensive cars, bang-bang – they see it, and for them this is already the norm. This is also of great importance and has a great influence on them. How to deal with it? We don’t know, we can’t fight it, this is the task of parents,” Mikhail throws up his hands. — And parents, unfortunately, sometimes add to this problem: either they don’t watch children at all, or they use children for their own purposes.

In almost 17 years of service in the Oakland police, the blogger reflects, he did not notice a serious increase in the negative influence of pop culture on children and adolescents – not because everything was normal, but because this influence was felt just as pernicious in the late 90s. But sometimes terrible things happen to children, regardless of their age, behavior and values instilled by the TV:

— Very often, unfortunately, children become victims. And not even because they are the goal, but by chance.

Photo: Watchara Phomicinda/globallookpress.com

Mikhail Lapidus recalled one similar incident that occurred during his service in the USA:

— There was a shootout next to a small Mexican cafe on wheels. They tried to rob him, but the seller refused to give the money, and they opened fire on him. And a little boy, 6-8 years old, played for the cafe, and he died. Such things have always been hard to experience, and not only by me. All officers are people, and this is sometimes reflected very harshly.

– In the first or second year after I arrived ( in US ), there was an earthquake in Los Angeles,” the ex-cop shared. — When buildings started to crumble, glass broke, what was the first thing people did? Run to save someone? No, they ran to rob banks, shops, cars. Shop windows were broken, alarms were howling all over the city, there were a lot of calls – and they robbed everything that was possible, instantly, within an hour after the earthquake.

Mikhail Lapidus recalled this situation in the context of increasing pressure on the police in the United States associated with the strengthening of various social movements, including Black Lives Matter. Many in the United States are in favor of reducing the police force, and this trend has developed a “permissive feeling” among criminals in recent years, the blogger noted.

– We can do much less now than we could when I started working. Not in the sense that the laws have changed – the laws have not changed, but the way they look at the work of the police, condemn, discuss … We are practically pointed at a microscope. And some of my colleagues, I can’t say that they were afraid, but they didn’t do their job to the fullest, so that it looked good, and not as it should. And when you do the job right, it doesn’t always look good on camera,” the former policeman admitted. – But you can’t do anything about it, it’s part of your job.

Photo: Steve Sanchez/globallookpress.com

After stories about the deaths of African Americans George Floyd, who was allegedly killed by a policeman during his arrest, and teenager Trayvon Martin, many in the United States began to advocate for a reduction in police funding.

– Somewhere they say that we need to remove funding altogether and close our departments – come on, they did it in Seattle, and what did it lead to? The city is almost gone. There is a combat zone, roughly speaking, – the ex-policeman shares. – Any social or political movement, I think, should have some clear goals, tasks, but they cannot formulate anything there and it is not clear what it is about. But they seem to achieve some of their goals. I talked with friends, discussed all this, people there often do not understand what is happening at all – both in political life, and in cities, on the streets. Something terrible is going on, really.

Mikhail Lapidus also remembered another story from the past:

— Once in the city of Boston, many, many years ago, the police union went on strike because they were given such working conditions that it was impossible to work. In three days, Boston was practically razed to the ground! Only the firebrands remained, figuratively speaking. There was something absolutely terrible going on. And now the so-called public figures are striving for this very thing: cut the police, close departments, and so on.

The blogger noted that throughout his career as a police officer, he never found a moment when the police force would be fully staffed.

Photo: vk.com/Mikhail Lapidus

– In Auckland, we once hired a special commission from a company that deals with logistics and statistics specifically in the field of law and order. They analyze the crime rate in the city, the number of crimes, demographics, trends, and write a list of tips for the city authorities – what they need to improve the situation in the city, and how much police is adequate for a city of this size. It was about 20 years ago, they came, inspected and said that in Auckland, for everything to function normally, at least 2,500 officers are needed. There were 600 of us.

The most common crimes in Auckland were burglaries and car thefts, said Mikhail Lapidus. Moreover, during the day they broke into houses while people were at work, and at night they broke into business centers and other work points while employees were sleeping. Break-ins, our interlocutor noted, took place several hundred per day.

— Cars are more often stolen not to dismantle, resell, but often just to ride, — said the blogger. – You just steal a car instead of a taxi, drive as long as you need, leave, go on business. This was also very common. Cars ( to US ) are generally easy to steal. They even showed us at the Academy that some old cars could be hacked with just a straw from McDonald’s. And start with nail scissors. And therefore, from infancy to old age, many people do this.

However, sometimes cars in America “saw” with pleasure – this is called chop shop, our interlocutor noted, from the word chop – “chopping”. True, cars are not only stolen a lot, but also found a lot – after the “taxi drivers” who abandoned them.

Photo: Nicolas Armer/globallookpress. com

Sometimes it’s just as easy to “enclose” a business center, Mikhail recalls:

— Some character enters large buildings in the city center in the evening, hides there with a backpack, there are a lot of nooks and crannies, stairs, and at night he just walks through the offices, collects laptops. They stole several dozens of them during the night.

Sometimes there were robberies – and here, given the right of US citizens to keep and bear arms, various situations happened:

– I had a case, then I trained one novice forensic specialist. We had a call, they asked us to come to the mountains. In Auckland, part of the city is on the hills. And there granny worked for a robber for 70 years. A man broke into her house, she had such a Colt, and she worked on it. True, she didn’t hit, he ran away. She has the right, by law. We were a little shocked, because the grandmother was God’s dandelion: with a haircut, makeup, earrings, small, thin, more than 70 years old . .. And a huge Colt. They laughed, took fingerprints, like, then they even found ( offender ).

Rallies in the USA are sometimes not so fun. Of course, there is nothing terrible in this phenomenon as such – as long as people do not cross the boundaries of reason.

— There are permitted and unauthorized gatherings, authorized and unauthorized. It is not so difficult to obtain permission for a meeting there, you need to submit a paper to the mayor’s office and indicate where it will take place. Accordingly, no one will let you block the main street in the city. This is fine. When ( rally ) legal, a couple of officers will keep order, an ambulance will be on duty, suddenly someone becomes ill in the heat,” said Mikhail Lapidus.

Photo: Ron Adar/globallookpress.com

But rallies are not always limited to flowers at the muzzle of guns:

– And rallies that end in riots are no longer rallies, they are already criminal acts committed by a group of individuals. And when they start burning cars there, breaking shop windows, beating people – how should one react? We are trying to arrest them, at least to clear the territory from them and all that. Something similar happened to us all the time,” the ex-policeman recalled. “It even happened that meetings that were initially allowed, then turned into this. Then the police announces through the loudspeaker that your rally is already becoming illegal, and people should disperse. And if they don’t diverge, they automatically get the article.

Mikhail Lapidus admitted that police service often has a very bad effect on the psyche and emotional state:

— All officers are people, and this is sometimes reflected harshly. Some people start drinking because you see the worst in people. And even if you don’t understand how deeply it can hurt you, after a while it can overtake someone: everything seems to be fine, your career is going uphill, and suddenly a person starts drinking too much, often going to a bar. And you look – that’s it, the career went downhill, the person drowns all his worries and stress, begins to drink alcohol heavily.

Photo: vk.com/Mikhail Lapidus

Mikhail himself was helped to cope with such impressions by his “sparing memory”:

– It blocks many things that I don’t want to remember. Because of this, I have problems with the book. I am writing a book, and often at some point I just stop. I have a block, I don’t want to describe ( what happened ). Sometimes I break it, but it doesn’t always work, and the book has a hard time moving forward because of it.

Nevertheless, by the end of the coming summer, Mikhail Lapidus plans to finish his book about service in California, or rather, the first of three.

And now the so-called public figures are striving for this very thing: cut the police, close departments, and so on.

The blogger noted that throughout his career as a police officer, he never found a moment when the police force would be fully staffed.

Family Child Care: What to Expect in an Inspection

All family child care homes in Pennsylvania will soon be required to earn a Certificate of Compliance as a CERTIFIED, also called LICENSED, child care provider. The process to get certified/licensed includes annual unannounced inspections of family child care homes.

Conducted by Certification Representatives from the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL), under the Department of Human Services (DHS), the annual unannounced inspections will help family child care homes meet regulatory standards for providing safe and healthy environments for children.

OCDEL worked with the Pennsylvania Key, Better Kid Care, and several experienced family child care programs to produce this introductory video on what providers can expect during an inspection.

OCDEL Program Self Assessment Checklist to Support Certification Compliance

These new user-friendly tools were designed to assist Child Care Center, Family, and Group Child Care Home Providers in performing periodic reviews of their facility operations to achieve compliance with OCDEL certification regulations.  When utilized regularly, these checklists can help to identify program strengths and gaps in the understanding of and compliance with OCDEL regulations.

New Certification Inspection Instrument and Worksheets for Renewal Visits

The creation and implementation of the Certification Inspection Instrument (CII) represent DHS and OCDEL’s commitment to consistent monitoring of all existing regulations and transparency of the certification and inspection process. The CII standardizes how certification regulations are applied, measured, and enforced consistently across Pennsylvania and support consistent documentation of inspection results and compliance.

The CII accessed via the links below and presented in the webinar is for use in conducting a renewal inspection at a Child Care Center, Group Child Care Home, Family Child Care Home, and School Age Child Care facility.

Download the CII and related worksheets and forms below: The CII supports the consistent monitoring of Certification Regulations. Use this to support your own review of requirements related to: posted notices, required paperwork, transportation, ratio and supervision, and physical site.

Best Place To Get Babies Ears Pierced?

Baby

ByWinters

HoursUpdated:

Recently, I’ve been flooded with questions from new moms about babies’ ear piercings.

For example, what are the best places to get a baby girl’s ears pierced? Or what is the right time to get a baby’s ears pierced?

So I’ve compiled all baby’s ear-piercing facts (that matters!) and have put them right here. Swear by this guide, and you’ll be ready to achieve a new milestone with your little one.

What Is the Right Time to Get Your Baby’s Ear Pierced?

It’s every parent’s personal choice, there isn’t any ideal time really. As a mother, you might have different concerns. I’ve addressed the most common ones below.

I’m Worried about My Baby Catching A Chance Of Infection!

Babies can catch a risk of infection when piercing their ears, as there’s a wound left open. Which becomes an entry point for the bacteria. Here’s what you can do.

  • Wait until your baby gets a jab of the tetanus vaccine, a vaccine that strengthens your baby’s immune system.
  • Wait until your baby’s immune system is fully developed – when they turn 7-8 years old.
  • If you want to pierce your baby’s ears before they are 7-8 years old and still be assured that there are fewer chances for them to catch an infection, wait until your baby turns six months of age.

I Wonder If My Baby Would like to Get an Ear Piercing!

In that case, skip the piercing ritual, and let the baby decide when they grow up.

Can I Pierce My Baby’s Ears as per My Cultural Norm?

You can go for piercing when your culture recommends you to. For instance, Indians prefer piercing their baby’s ears on the 12th or 13th day after the baby’s birth.

If you have no external obligations, including cultural or family pressure, at least wait until your baby turns three months old.

What If My Baby Won’t Be Able to Deal with an Ear Piercing?

In that case, AAP recommends mothers pierce their kid’s ears when they are between 5 to 12 years of age.

By that time, your baby can care for the piercing themselves. For instance, keeping their pierced ears clean until they heal.

Pediatricians recommend waiting at least 2-3 months before getting your baby’s ear pierced. I’d say, the earlier you pierce your baby’s ears, the better. This is because the piercing process will be less painful, and your baby won’t recall the pain as they grow up.

Ensure this before Piercing Your Baby’s Ears

  • To get the piercing job done, a nurse, doctor, pediatrician, or technician should be your first preference.
  • But if you want to visit a parlor or jewelry store, ensure the hygiene is checked and all the piercing instruments they use are sterile.
  • Get both of your baby’s ears pierced simultaneously, so the baby won’t have to anticipate the fear of getting pierced twice.

Best Places to Get Your Baby’s Ears Pierced

Your Pediatrician Clinic

Your pediatrician’s clinic or office will serve as a safe, sterile, and expert-supervised environment for your baby. A nurse or a medical professional might perform the ear-piercing process.

Your Choice of Jewelry Store

These stores can charge a minimal fee for ear piercing or offer piercing services for free or at a discounted rate in exchange for a jewelry purchase.

They have a staff person trained in baby piercing, so you need not worry about your baby being in the wrong hands. Only ensure whatever piercing tools they use are sterile.

A Piercing Parlors

These parlors maintain hygiene and have trained people to handle baby piercing needs.  Choose a parlor that has good reviews on the internet. You can also visit the parlor and take their services before trying them out on your baby.

A Quick Walkthrough of Getting Your Baby’s Ear Pierced

Though the process may vary a little depending on where you choose to get your infant ear piercing done, the following steps remain constant.

Step 1: The doctor will apply the numbing gel to your kid’s ears. They might use a clean cotton bud to keep the gel application process less messy.

Step 2: After the baby’s ears are numb, around 10 to 15 minutes after the gel application, the doctor will clean the outer parts of the ears with an alcohol swab. It will keep the baby’s earlobes clean and germ-free.

Step 3: Next, using a marker, the doctor will create a spot where they will pierce a hole. Mothers, ensure that the tag is exactly where you want your baby’s ears pierced.

Step 4: Finally, the doctor will pierce the hole in the baby’s ears using a sharp, disposable piercing needle.

Some places use a reusable, spring-loaded piercing gun to puncture the baby’s earlobe and insert a sterile stud. If you visit a salon, you are more likely to find these.

Tips for Minimizing Pain during Ear Piercing

Getting your baby’s ears pierced is an important milestone for both babies and mothers.

Every mother wishes to treasure this event as a painless, beautiful memory. But your baby might feel a tiny pinch in its ears when pierced. Sometimes, there will be pain.

Stick to the following hacks to reduce your baby’s discomfort during the piercing process.

The Timing Matters!

Suppose you take your baby for piercing when they are starving, fuzzy, irritated, or haven’t slept well. In that case, your baby will not coordinate with the piercing process.

In contrast, your baby will be easier to manage if they are well-fed and in a happy and playful mood. Also, the doctor can do the piercing quickly and stress-free.

Diverting Your Baby’s Attention

While the doctor takes care of the piercing, divert your baby with fun games. Or let them watch an engaging video on the phone on the TV.

I remember making funny faces at my baby to lighten up her mood! The plan is to keep your baby occupied, so they are not much alert when their ear piercing is done.

Hold Your Baby Correctly

When the infant ear piercing happens, ensure that you firmly hold your baby’s head. Your doctor should guide you through the proper holding techniques.

Your baby should not move their head around much, and the piercing procedure should end smoothly.

Finally, if your baby is afraid of starts crying after their ears are pierced, put a pacifier in their mouth. Next, try calming them with a sweet treat, breast milk, chocolate, or any food item to make them happy.

Aftercare Instructions or Tips for Baby’s Ear Piercing

  • If your baby develops a fever after baby ear piercing, visit a doctor immediately.
  • Wash your hands clean with soap and water before you touch your baby’s piercing. That said, do not touch them often.
  • For three to five weeks after piercing, gently clean the pierced area with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. This will prevent the area from trapping any germs and causing skin issues or infections.
  • Ensure you keep your baby’s studs and earrings in place (don’t over-tighten or loosen them) while you clean the pierced area. Else, you would cause discomfort to your baby.
  • If your baby’s ears feel warm 24 hours after piercing, it might be a sign of infection. Visit a doctor’s office in that case.

I hope this guide has answered your baby’s ear-piercing questions. Not to forget, after the baby gets the ear piercing, capture a photograph of both mama and baby wearing their beautiful diamond earrings and a broad smile.

Baby ear piercing: When and where babies can get their ears pierced

Baby ear piercing is safe, and it’s up to you whether to pierce your baby’s ears. There are some risks, though, so let your pediatrician know ahead of time. If you decide to pierce your baby’s ears, get it done at a medical office to ensure sterile conditions. Clean the piercing sites twice daily for six weeks to reduce the risk of infection and other complications.

Lots of people have opinions on when to pierce a baby’s ears. Some prefer to do it during infancy so babies won’t remember, while others would rather their child be old enough to make the decision and to take care of the piercings themselves.

In some cultures, piercing a baby’s ears is a custom and a rite of passage. In Spain and Latin America, for example, it’s customary to pierce a baby girl’s ears days after birth (sometimes even before she leaves the hospital).

Indian, African, Asian, and some Middle Eastern countries practice baby ear piercing as a custom, too. For example, Hinduism has the Karnavedha, a traditional ear-piercing ceremony typically performed when a female child is between the ages of 1 and 5.

In the United States, there are no definitive rules on whether or not to pierce your baby’s ears (and when). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) doesn’t explicitly recommend when to pierce your child’s ears, but says there’s little risk at any age if the piercing is performed carefully and cared for conscientiously. The AAP does recommend waiting until a child is old enough to take care of the piercings themselves, because this is the best way to reduce the risk of infection.

Piercing your baby’s ears: When to do it

Ultimately, when and whether to pierce a baby’s ears is a matter of parental preference.

There are things to consider when contemplating when to pierce your child’s ears, but ultimately, it’s about weighing any risks and benefits. Some parents wait, thinking there’s a connection between infant ear piercing and keloids (small nodules on the ear that most often occur as a result of injury to the lobe). But one small study found this was only true in children who pierced their ears after the age of 11, and who had a family history of keloids.

As long as ear piercings are done in a sanitary environment and the piercing sites are cared for diligently for the first few weeks, your infant’s ear piercings should heal well. In fact, they should heal just as well as if you waited until your child’s older.

You also don’t need to worry about your child having drooping or off-center piercings if you pierce their ears during infancy. Yes, our ear lobes do change as we age, but this gradual sagging won’t make a big difference in how your baby or child’s ear piercings look over time.

Piercing your baby’s ears right after leaving the hospital

If you’d like to get your baby’s ears pierced shortly after they return home from the hospital, your pediatrician may be willing to perform a medical piercing. (This means a piercing done in a sterile environment and performed by a medical professional.) If not, see if they can recommend another reputable healthcare professional to do the job.

Piercing your baby’s ears at 1 month

The younger a baby is when you pierce their ears, the less likely they are to remember it happening. At this age, your baby won’t move around much, which will make piercing easier. Plus, they won’t tug at their ears as they’re healing.

Some experts recommend waiting until your baby is at least 2 months old before getting their ears pierced – after they get the DTaP vaccine at their 2-month checkup. DTaP helps prevent diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus. A common cause of tetanus is puncture wounds or infection from a foreign object, which could include an unclean earring or piercing gun. However, if you have your baby’s ears pierced in a sterile, sanitary environment (more on that below) you won’t need to worry about a tetanus infection.

Piercing your baby’s ears at 3 months

By 3 months old, your baby is no longer considered a newborn, and is technically an infant. Their immune system is getting stronger, too. Some pediatricians recommend waiting until your baby hits 3 months before piercing their ears, out of an abundance of caution. At this age, if your baby were to get an infection from the piercing sites, it’s less likely they’d need to be admitted to the hospital.

Baby ear piercing risks

Let your pediatrician know ahead of time that you’re planning to pierce your baby’s ears. As with any piercing or body modification, there are some risks involved. They include:

  • Pain or bleeding from the puncture site
  • Allergic reaction from the earring itself or the tools used during the procedure (some babies and kids are allergic to nickel or gold, both metals that are commonly used in jewelry)
  • Infection, which may warrant a visit to the hospital and/or a round of antibiotics
  • Embedding of the backings into the piercing hole
  • The formation of scar tissue near the piercing site

A less common but possible risk is that a loose earring could get dislodged from their ear and fall into your baby’s mouth, causing a choking hazard. Make sure the backings are secure (screw-back earrings are preferable for this reason) to prevent earrings from falling out.

Where to get your baby’s ears pierced

Get your baby’s ears pierced at a healthcare professional’s office, which you can trust is sterile and sanitary. It’s not unusual for pediatricians to do ear piercing, but if your baby’s doctor doesn’t, ask them to recommend someone.

Never pierce your baby’s ears at a jewelry store or a kiosk at a shopping center. These places usually use piercing guns (rather than needles), which can’t be sterilized. Workers are often inexperienced and receive little training or supervision, depending on the regulation and licensing standards in your state.

Healthcare providers who pierce babies’ ears use sterilized needles and put in starter earrings made of hypoallergenic surgical steel that are especially designed for this purpose. They also use gloves when piercing, and essentially treat piercing as they would any other medical procedure.

How to minimize pain from infant ear piercing

Even though ear piercing is over in a matter of seconds, it’s painful. If you want to spare your baby that pain, ask the doctor to apply a little bit of topical anesthesia to your baby’s ear lobes before the piercing. An alternative option is to numb the area beforehand with an ice pack.

Baby ear piercing aftercare

After the piercing, keep the earrings in for six weeks to prevent the holes from closing up. Always wash your hands with soap and warm water before touching your baby’s piercing sites, and try not to touch their earlobes other than when you’re cleaning them.

Here’s a few more cleaning tips for your baby’s pierced ears:

Apply rubbing alcohol or an antibiotic ointment around the ear lobe, front and back, twice a day, and gently rotate the earrings at least once a day while cleaning. Don’t press on your baby’s ear when doing so, as that can be painful. After each bath, dry the area around each piercing so it doesn’t stay damp.

Keep an eye out for any signs of infection. These can include pain, discharge, inflammation, fever, or bleeding, or the piercing site could become red or warm to the touch. If you see any of these signs, take the earring out (with washed hands!), clean the piercing sites with alcohol, and ask your baby’s doctor whether you need to apply any topical medication.

The doctor may recommend applying an antibiotic ointment or cream to the earlobe as well as to the earring itself before putting it back in. Ask your doctor if you can buy the cream over the counter or if you’ll need a prescription. Call the doctor if your baby runs a fever or their earlobe gets very red and swollen.

Swap in different earrings only after six weeks, when the ear lobes have healed. Make sure all new earrings are made of surgical steel or gold that’s at least 14 karats. Earrings made of other materials or mixed metals can trigger an allergic reaction.

Choose baby earrings that are very small, round, and as flat as possible in front. The fastener should cover the entire back of the earring, and the post should be rounded with a little point at the end. Never use dangling earrings or hoops, because your baby could tug on them and even pull them out – or the earrings could catch on something.

Recommended age for piercing a child’s ears

Piercing a child’s ears is an ancient tradition, but it is still in fashion today. Now, this tradition has become much younger, and parents can pierce the ears of a child at an early age (up to 1.5 years), since the pain from the procedure for piercing children’s ears is reduced to zero. However, parents should take into account that the advantage of piercing the ears of a child at an early age (up to 1.5 years) is absolute fearlessness to the procedure ear piercing on the baby side. Psychologists say that after 1.5 years, the child may already experience a sense of fear and after a long time experience negative emotions associated with the procedure. Therefore, after 1.5 years, in no case should you pierce the ears of a child without first explaining how and why this is done, and, moreover, pierce the ears of a child against his will.

In connection with the above optimal age when it is possible to pierce the ears of a child , we can consider the moment when the girl herself consciously asks her parents about it. Usually, this happens at the age of 3-4 years, when children have a particularly pronounced desire to imitate adults. From the point of view of official medicine, it is not recommended pierce the ears of children under 3 years of age.

Recommendations for preparing a child for ear piercing

  • We recommend preparing a child for ear piercing first of all with an elementary conversation about it.
  • If mother or grandmother has pierced ears, give this fact as an example, tell the child that you are very pleased that you wear beautiful earrings and have the opportunity to change them.
  • DO NOT mention the words “ear piercing”, rather say that you will “put on earrings”, this has a very effective effect on the behavior of girls during the procedure piercing the child’s ears . Fear in anticipation of pain does not appear.

Technology for piercing a child’s ears with a gun

The most advanced development of STUDEX 75 in ear piercing technology is the system-75. It is this system that we chose for ear piercing for children from our specialists.

  • complete sterility guarantee. System-75 complies with all hygiene standards worldwide and of course this is very important at piercing a child’s ears with a gun;
  • Puncture without “shot”. Now the earlobe is truly pierced, and not “shoot through”. Thus, the tissues of the child’s earlobe are pulled apart.
  • The needle part of the earring has a diameter of 0.9 mm and a special sharpening. All this provides a significant reduction in pain. The needle earring cartridge is designed so that neither the needle earring nor the clasp has contact with the instrument.
  • The needle ear module is clearly visible both in the transparent plastic container and after it has been removed. In the process of piercing, a “miss” is excluded. The puncture occurs exactly in the intended place.
  • The tool is very easy to use. All stages of preparation for a puncture take no more than one minute.
  • Piercing a child’s ears with the gun is silent. All these factors allow to pierce the ears of children without any problems.
  • During the piercing process, the earring closes automatically. The clasp of the needle earring closes so that the “clamp” of the earlobe of the child’s ear is completely eliminated. This means that the healing process occurs without problems.

What are the advantages of piercing a child’s ears AT HOME!

  • At home, the child feels more confident, freer, so there is no fear of “someone else’s” office. The child is in a homely, safe atmosphere for him, surrounded by his beloved mother, father, grandmother and other close people, he knows that at any moment he will receive the necessary support and understanding from them during and after the ear piercing procedure .
  • You can organize a surprise for your child, for example, invite our master on his birthday and pierce your child’s ears without leaving the festive table. Be sure that the child will appreciate your gift with joy and worth!
  • Even if a girl sheds a couple of tears after ear piercing (not from pain, naturally, but from emotional experience), then none of the outsiders will see her tears except for close people. What is an important psychological aspect for girls of any age.
  • Ear piercing child will not want to part with the mirror, be sure that the baby will spend more than one hour looking at her beautiful ears with earrings in the mirror. Do not deprive the baby of the opportunity immediately after the ear piercing procedure to start this important task!
  • Our masters have with them all the means, individual consumables and tools with which pierce the ears of a child as safely as in any beauty salon.
  • Your baby will be able to choose the earrings she likes from a large assortment, always available from the masters.

When and who can have their ears pierced?

In the children’s “Euromed” it is possible to pierce the ears of a child after 1 year. Recommended age – from 5-6 years old , at this age, kids can sit quietly during the markings and the procedure. Also, at an older age, children understand that it is impossible to touch the ears before healing. In a child younger than two years old, there is a risk of unconsciously pulling the earrings out of the earlobe and damaging it.

How is a child’s ears pierced at the Euromed Kids Clinic?

There are several ways to pierce the ears. The method that is right for your child will help you choose a doctor according to the age and anatomical features of the earlobe.

Ear piercing with a Studex gun (R993)

Piercing with a gun is very quick and causes moderate pain.
Original earrings from the pistol manufacturer are used. They are hypoallergenic and made of surgical steel, which is not subject to oxidation.

The hole is punched by a stud earring with a pointed end – in this way the jewelry is quickly inserted into the ear and automatically fixed into the plug. Due to the thickness of the earring pin, after healing, the baby can wear jewelry with any other thickness.

It is worth noting that this system also has disadvantages . The puncture moment is quite loud: the characteristic pop when the spring is triggered can scare the child. Sometimes there are micro-ruptures of tissues, because of which healing can be long and sensitive. Earrings also have to be sterilized before being pierced, which can increase the risk of infection.

Ear piercing with Studex System 75

    System 75 – improved modification of the R9 pistol93.

This method eliminates the inaccuracy of the lobe puncture. Due to the design features of the gun, the earring does not pierce the earlobe, but, as it were, pushes the tissue apart. As a result, the procedure is more comfortable and the puncture heals much faster.

System 75 does not have loud pops that can frighten a child.

Another advantage of this method is the individually packaged earring cartridges. There are situations when a child can be naughty and prevent the second earlobe from being pierced. At such moments, we can postpone the procedure for another day, and the second earring will remain unpacked in the meantime. Needle earrings do not touch the gun itself (since they are in the cartridge), which eliminates any infection.

All jewelry is also original and certified.
The only disadvantage of the System 75 is the very thin diameter of the stem of the earring. On the one hand, this is done for a more gentle and painless puncture, but on the other hand, there may be little difficulty in finding jewelry of the desired diameter after healing.

Both of our guns and their accessories are carefully treated three times with modern disinfectants. Parents who choose our clinic to pierce their children’s ears in St. Petersburg can be sure of the safety of the procedure.

Ear piercing with a medical (venous) catheter

Catheter is a disposable sterile kit that consists of a needle and a plastic tube (cannula). After the puncture, the needle is removed and the cannula remains in the canal. The plastic tip of the cannula is cut off, then the earring is inserted, then the cannula is removed from the canal, and the jewelry remains.

The catheter speeds up the puncture process and guarantees sterility. With the help of a catheter, you can choose a different diameter of the channel. As a rule, this method is used to puncture the piercing.

The doctor performs ear piercings for children, as well as other popular types of piercings.

This method is recommended to be used no earlier than from eight years .

    How is the procedure?

The doctor disinfects the earlobe on both sides. Then he marks the place of the future puncture, which is agreed with mom, dad and, of course, with the little patient.

After that, the doctor makes the puncture himself with a special gun. This method of ear piercing is ideal for children, as it allows you to make the process almost painless!

At the request of the parents, the puncture site can be anesthetized with special ointments and sprays.

    Why Euromed Kids?

    • Ear piercing and piercing procedures are performed by a qualified experienced pediatrician who can examine the child before the procedure and assess the safety of manipulation.
    • The clinic has all the narrow specialists who can also be consulted before the procedure (ENT, surgeon) or if problems arise during the recovery period.
    • You can always contact us during the recovery period and get advice if you have any questions.
    • All instruments in the clinic are completely sterile and the risk of infection is thus minimized.
    • Modern and safe ear piercing options are available for even the smallest patients. We use the silent atraumatic Studex System 75.

The clinic has a large selection of first earrings that will be safe for puncture healing and at the same time will delight little princesses.

    Contraindications:

    • chronic skin diseases in the acute stage; tsov,
    • recent or upcoming vaccination.

Parents’ most common questions about the piercing procedure

Can gold earrings be worn after the piercing?

After piercing with a gun, it is recommended to refrain from changing earrings for 1. 5 months, this is also recommended by the manufacturer Studex. When punctured by a catheter, this period can take up to 1–1.5 months.

It is not recommended to insert earrings made of precious metals directly. They can slow down the healing process and canal formation.

Can a child be pierced? Where can you get a piercing?

The recommended age for cartilage piercing of the ear, eyebrows, nose, lips, navel is from 14-15 years old. Until the age of 15, such procedures are carried out only in the presence of legal representatives (parents, guardians).

After the age of 15, a child can independently sign an informed consent without the parents’ marks. But in our clinic, we are sensitive to the health of young patients and value the opinion of loved ones. Therefore, at a minimum, we require the written consent of the parent to pierce the child and personal presence before the procedure to sign (or indicate consent to sign) a contract for the provision of medical services.

How to care for the puncture site?

    &nbsp
Do not remove earrings for 1-2 months after piercing.
2-3 days to ensure that water does not get on the earlobes: gently wash and comb the hair.
For the period of healing and formation of the channel within 1 month it is forbidden to visit the pool, saunas, open water.
Treat the puncture sites twice daily with a solution of chlorhexidine 0.05% or Miramistin 0.01% for 10–14 days.
After 5-7 days, rotate the earrings in the ears in both directions several times a day, after washing your hands.
If swelling, irritation occurs, or if a child’s ear piercing is festering, you should immediately consult a doctor.

2Yr old baby food: Feeding your baby: 1–2 years

Feeding your baby: 1–2 years

At this age, breastmilk still provides important nutrition and protection against disease, but other foods become your child’s main source of nutrition and energy. Feed your child other foods first and then breastfeed after if they are still hungry.

What to feed your child

Your child can eat anything, so you can give them some of all the food your family eats and make every bite count. Each meal needs to be packed with nutritious food.

Be sure your child has a portion of animal foods (milk, dairy, eggs, meat, fish and poultry) each day, plus legumes (like chickpeas, lentils or peas) – or nuts, and orange or green vegetables and fruits. Add a little oil or fat to their food for energy.

Be sure your child’s snacks are healthy, such as fresh fruit.

How much food and how often

Your child can take between three quarters to one cup of food three to four times a day, plus one to two snacks between meals.

If you’re not breastfeeding, then your child will need to eat more often.

At 1 year, about the time children start to walk, your child’s feeding schedule should include four to five meals a day, plus two healthy snacks. Milk products are a very important part of your child’s diet – give them one or two cups of milk a day.

Foods to avoid

Avoid junk food and soft drinks. Factory-made snacks like crisps, cookies, cakes, soda and candy are unhealthy. They have high amounts of sugar, salt, fat and chemicals, and take up space in your child’s stomach that should be filled with nutritious foods.

Mealtime tips

Having their own bowl of food will help your child learn to feed themselves. Start as soon as your child wants. Give them all the food they need and plenty of time to eat.

At first, your child will be slow and messy. Help them to get most of the food in their mouth (instead of on themself or the floor!). Encourage your child to finish it and make sure they have had enough.

Give your child lots of love and encouragement to eat during meal times.

Sit in front of your child and make eye contact. Interact by smiling, talking and praising them for eating.

Make the meal a happy time!

What to do when your child refuses to eat solid foods

Make sure your child is hungry at mealtimes and has not just had a snack. Although breastfeeding continues to be healthy for your child, breastfeed them only after their meal. At this age, they should eat solid food first.

Give your child healthy food that they like or mix the food they like with food they don’t like as much. Try different food combinations and textures.

If they still refuse, don’t force or pressure your child to eat, and don’t be tempted to give them junk food instead.

Be calm and accepting. Give your child positive attention when they do eat, but don’t make it a problem when they don’t eat. Just take the food away, cover it, and offer it to them again a bit later.

Food chart for 2 years baby

So your child is 2 years old now!!! With time the food habits of the child also changes. Your child has witnessed the phase of teething, eating solids and now is ready to enjoy the family meals. But see to it that you add less spices in your child’s food. Maintaining a food chart for 2 years baby along with some easy food recipes can help to plan your kid’s meals properly.

Below meal plans and food chart for 2 years baby attempt to maintain a balance of nutrients between meals by providing you with ideas for ensuring a healthy and balanced diet for your child; however, bear in mind that each child is unique, and you must feed according to his/her likes. (Why balanced diet is so important?)

Some Steps to Help Your Child Develop Healthy Eating Habits:

The baby’s sense of taste and flavor develops once he/she starts solids. This is the perfect moment for parents to inculcate a good eating habit in their children.

  • Follow meal timings and feed at regular intervals. It is important to establish a schedule to help your child develop a fixed mealtime by feeling hungry at the right time.
  • Avoid snacks or liquid food like fruit juices or milk before the meal time.
  • Make sure you provide complete nutrition to your child by including nutrient-dense foods.
  • Teach eating etiquette and encourage them to eat slowly.
  • Avoid unhealthy junk foods.

Foods for 2 year old baby:

Your toddler’s body is rapidly developing at this stage and he/she requires a variety of foods from all food groups. Make sure that you provide a balanced diet and choose toddler food recipes for 2 year old that provide good nutrition.

Here is a list of some foods that are important for growth and development for your child.

Dairy and dairy products

Dairy and dairy products are good sources of carbohydrate, protein and fat along with important vitamins and minerals like calcium and vitamin D. Calcium and vitamin D are important for strong bones and teeth. Other dietary sources of calcium include dairy products such as yoghurt, buttermilk and cheese.

In case of a child having lactose intolerance or milk allergies, the plant based milk alternatives is the best option. Also to meet the calcium needs of children, nuts and pulses can be included in the diet.

Vegetables

Vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients. These phytonutrients not only help in growth and development but also strengthens the immune system. The fibre-rich veggies eases the bowel movements and prevents constipation. Always include vegetables of different colours in toddler food recipes for 2 year old, such as:

  • Green vegetables ( peas, beans, spinach. broccoli)
  • Orange vegetables( carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato)
  • Yellow vegetables( corn , capsicum )
  • Red vegetables( Tomato )
  • Purple vegetables ( Beetroot, cabbage)
  • White vegetables ( Cauliflower, cabbage)

Fruits

  • Green fruits ( apple, grapes, kiwi)
  • Orange fruits( orange, mango)
  • Yellow and red fruits ( banana, strawberries, watermelon)
  • Purple fruits (grapes, plum, blueberries)

Meat

Chicken is the best source of protein as it is abundant in amino acids. For developing children, chicken is a nutritious and filling option to consider. It is advised to avoid/ consume lesser quantities of red meat such as beef, mutton because of their high saturated fat.

Fish

The best non-vegetarian food for growing children is fish. It has high quality proteins and vitamins, minerals. It is a rich source of omega 3 and Docasahexanoic acid (DHA). This helps in growth of brain tissues, bones and helps in maintaining good eyesight.

HEALTHY OILS:

Nuts and seeds contain healthy oils such as essential fatty acids and minerals.

Citrus fruits

Vitamin C is important in kids for strengthened gums and  blood vessels. Scurvy is a serious illness caused due to its deficiency. Oranges and lemons are well known for their high vitamin C content. Other dietary sources of vitamin C include guava, tomato, banana, spinach etc.,.

Sunlight

Vitamin D is necessary for the growth and development especially bones. And the efficient source of this vitamin D is sunlight. Other foods that contain Vitamin D are dairy products and meat.

Few tips to be taken care of while feeding your child:

  1. It is important that you should not focus on the amount of food your 2-year-old infant consumes. It varies among the children.
  2. Do not include artificial supplements in your child’s diet.
  3. Your child’s eating habits should not be rewarded or punished as this might lead to a negative attitude towards food.
  4. While eating, do not allow your kid to watch his favorite cartoon on television. He/ she has to concentrate on the meal.
  5. Make sure you don’t force-feed your child. (How food format helps to feed nutrition to kids?)

Many people believe that eating nutritious food that is fresh and free of preservatives requires too much work, but with the proper motivation, it can become a habit rather than a burden! Your child’s diet should include a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, so that his palate will be stimulated and he will be less likely to lose interest in foods.

  • Chicken egg – 1 pc.
  • Flour – 3 tbsp. l.
  • Parsley – 2 tbsp. l. (chopped)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper – to taste (ground)

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
Frozen green peas put in a colander and pour over with boiling water, wait until the water drains. Grate the cheese on a grater with large holes, pass the turkey fillet through a meat grinder or chop finely.

Washed and peeled potatoes also grate on a coarse grater. Put the grated potatoes on a towel and squeeze out the liquid slightly.

Then transfer the squeezed potatoes to a large bowl, add green peas, grated cheese, minced turkey fillet, egg, flour and chopped parsley. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix all products thoroughly.

Shape into patties and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake 30-35 minutes until golden brown. You can (but not have to) flip once during the baking process.
Serve with sour cream. Bon appetit!

• Children from 0 to 7 months

If the mother does not have milk or it is not enough, the local pediatrician prescribes powdered milk formula to the child. The mixture is adapted for infants and provides them with useful substances necessary for growth and development. It is designed to feed healthy children.

According to electronic prescriptions issued:

– from the 1st to the 10th of the month, parents can receive formula from the 11th to the 20th of the current month.

– from the 11th to the 20th day of the month, parents can receive milk formula from the 21st to the 30th (31st) of the current month.

– from the 20th to the 31st of the month, an electronic prescription for a dry adapted mixture for the next month will be issued. Parents can receive it from 01 to 10.

If the child has individual characteristics: allergies, a tendency to spit up, underweight, etc., then he needs a different, special mixture. It will be helped by a local pediatrician and a specialist in the office of a healthy child.

In the eyes of the law, you’re still a child, and you must remain in school till the age of 18. You can work, but because of your age, there are strict rules and regulations. However, we have plenty of jobs for 15-year-olds, right here. But do read on – you should know your rights before you start any new job!

How Many Hours Can A 15-Year-Old Work?

How many hours can a 15-year-old work is surprisingly flexible. However, because you must remain in school while you’re working, there are some rules you and your employer must appreciate and follow.

During term time, you can only work a maximum of 12 hours a week. You can work a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays. On Saturdays, you can work for a maximum of 8 hours. However, you are not allowed to work before 7 am and after 7 pm, and you cannot work during school hours, sorry!

During the school holidays, you can work a maximum of 35 hours a week. This is divided into 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays. You are only allowed to work a maximum of 2 hours on Sundays.

As a 15-year-old, you must have at least 1 hour break for every 4 hours worked. You also have to take a 2-week break from school and working once a year.

15-Year-Old Working Laws

15-year-old working laws means you’re limited to what types of jobs you can do. However, you should contact your local council and see what job restrictions there are – as some councils will allow you to work in a place that may otherwise be illegal. Check what your local bylaws says before starting any new job, just in case.

Legally, you are not allowed to work in these areas:

  • Workplaces like a factory or an industrial estate.
  • You cannot work in places like pubs and betting shops, or other workplaces that require at least the age of 18 to work there.
  • You cannot work in a place that may be harmful to your health or well-being.
  • You cannot work for more than 1 hour before school.

Remember to check with your local council before starting any new job – as some local bylaws will allow you to work for 1 hour before school. You do this contacting your local education department or education welfare service. You should also be aware that, because you’re still a child, you are not entitled to employment rights.

The pay rate for a 15-year-old will vary from job to job. However, you are legally obliged to at least the minimum wage for your age group.
