How To Select Baby Shoe Sizes Based On Your Baby’s Age: A Guide

The best way to pick out your baby’s next pair of shoes is by looking at a baby shoe sizes by age chart. This will quickly and easily illustrate the right shoe sizes for your baby, and let’s be honest about baby shoes, we all love them. There is something about putting those itty bitty teeny tiny little toes into a precious little shoe that is just too cute for words!

However, I’ve always found that picking the right shoe size for a baby can be ridiculously difficult! Let’s be honest; the little darlings just never seem to stay the same size! One week they fit one size, and by the end of the week they’ve grown up two categories! Add to that the fact that there are literally thousands of shoe choices out there for your little one and it’s enough to make you crazy! That’s why you should always try to find the right baby shoes sizes by age.

Once you have that set in your mind, the list of prospective shoes dwindles down dramatically. However, that still won’t be enough to make the right choice for your cherub, so read on in this baby shoes size guide to find out what else to think about so that you can select the perfect precious pair. We will discuss what to look for in any and every pair of shoes, as well as provide you with an easy to print guide so that you always have a baby shoes size by age chart handy.

How Will I Know if the Shoes Fit Correctly?

This can be kinda tough, since, you know, depending on your kid’s age, they won’t be able to give you a heads up whether or not the shoe feels good. Thankfully, there are a couple of key fit checks that you can do to be sure that your baby’s shoes are just right for their feet. If you would like more information on picking the proper fit for your baby’s feet, you can check out what parents or doctors have to say on the subject.

Toes

When I was little, my mom always squeezed the top of my shoes when we were buying a new pair, and I had no idea why. Now that I’m grown, I completely understand! There is no quicker way to determine if there is enough wiggle room for your baby’s piggy toes than to give them a quick squeeze. You want to make sure that their toes are a half an inch or a quarter of an inch away from the front of the shoes, to give them lots of room to grow and to make sure their toes aren’t getting pinched.

Tongue

The tongue of a shoe is the part that sits on the top, and helps to hold the shoe on your foot. Be sure to pull it out all the way when you are trying shoes on your baby, as the tongues tend to scrunch down, making for an uncomfortable fit. If the shoe fits properly, you should be able to get your finger down in between the tongue and your baby’s foot.

Heel

Another challenging part to fit properly is your baby’s heel. If a shoe is rigid, or too much like an adult’s shoe, you might have a tough time getting a comfortable fit for your little squirmer. Luckily, lots of baby shoes come with adjustable or stretchy heels, making it that much easier to get the shoe on and keep it on securely.

Width

Since babies are notorious for having loads of chubbiness all over their bodies, it is no surprise that one of the toughest parts of their foot to plan for is the width. Lots of infants carry an extra thick layer of chub on the sides of their feet, making it appear that they need a bigger shoe than their foot length calls for. There are a couple of ways that you can work around this difficulty. You could either get a bigger shoe, purchase a wide variety of baby shoe, or get one with lots of give that will mold itself to whatever width your baby’s foot might be comfortably.

It’s All About Sole

According to Dr. Laura Jana, baby shoes work best if they have a flexible grippy sole. This allows the to explore their world comfortably, all while developing the necessary muscles and balance they will need as they become more experienced walkers.

What Kinds of Shoes Should I Be Looking for Based on My Baby’s Age?

Now that you understand how to check to see if the shoe you’re interested in will fit your baby’s feet, it’s time to consider what kind of shoe you’ll need to match your baby’s developmental stage. Obviously, you’ll need to look for different key features in a shoe for a 3-month-old compared to shoes for a 2-year-old.

  • 0-6 months – At this stage of their development, babies don’t do a whole lot of movin’ and groovin’. So, you won’t need a shoe that is designed to take too much of a beating. In fact, the softer, roomier, and more comfortable a shoe is, the better it will be for your baby’s feet during this period. Not that you couldn’t get a shoe with a hard sole. It won’t hurt their feet; it just isn’t necessary. Be sure to give them lots of room for their toes to wiggle, or it could hurt their development.
  • 6-12 months – Ahhh, the crawling stage. No longer can you place your baby in one location and expect them to stay there! With this adjustment in your monitoring style, also comes a change in the style of shoes that you need to look for. Since most babies are only crawling during this period, or at the very most, pulling themselves to stand, you want to make sure that the tongue and toes of the shoe are made well since they will be bearing the brunt of your baby’s movements. If your little one is more advanced, and already taking some steps, you might want to get a shoe with a tougher sole as well.
  • 12-18 months – This is usually the age that your baby will begin taking their first steps. How exciting!! This also means that you should begin to purchase shoes that have a thicker sole to protect their little feet from the roughness of the ground. Keep allowing for plenty of wiggle room around the sides and toes, too, as your baby’s feet are still adjusting and developing to handle the rigors of walking as their main mode of transportation.
  • 18-24 months – Walking? That is sooooo six months ago! Now your little one is probably running all over the place. You should most definitely have a tougher sole on their shoes now, and it’s also a good idea for their shoes to have a tighter fit than before, to ensure that they don’t hurt themselves while they scurry about.

Baby Shoe Sizes by Age Chart

Here is a handy, dandy toddler shoe size by age chart to better help you to make sure that your toddler is in the perfect pair of shoes. However, while this is a great starting point, your baby may or may not fit into the categories listed here. If a shoe doesn’t seem to fit, don’t be afraid to go up or down a size.

As you can see, lots of the shoe sizes are really close to each other. When you take this, and your baby’s unique feet, into consideration, it is easy to understand that your baby might not line up exactly with this chart.

Some Great Shoes Regardless of Age

Again, there are literally thousands of choices out there for baby shoes. However, lots of them are inferior quality, don’t have the right fit for your baby’s development, or are just plain and simply not nice to look at. Then, when you add in the fact that lots of shoes on the market only come in a select number of sizes, shopping for shoes for your baby can be a real headache.

But don’t despair! The perfect shoe does exist! Aston Baby’s Shaughnessy shoe has a great fit for any age or size baby. Their high-quality construction and attractive design make them great for moms, while their tough sole and comfortable fit make them perfect for your baby. How to determine the size of children’s shoes? Size chart for children’s shoes Kotofey, Kuoma, Kapika, Zebra and Demar – size chart for children’s shoes

To correctly determine the size of shoes, you need to measure the child’s foot. It is better to do this at the end of the day, when blood rushes to the legs and the foot increases slightly in size. Put socks on your child and take measurements with them.

  1. Lay a sheet of paper on a flat surface (such as the floor).
  2. Have the child stand with their feet on the sheet. The child must stand, not sit: when standing and walking, the foot carries a large load, so its size increases slightly. nine0006
  3. Outline both of the child’s feet, holding the pencil vertically.
  4. Use a ruler to measure the distance in centimeters from the big toe to the heel. This must be done along the “traces” of both legs of the child: if the values \u200b\u200bare different, then the largest of them is taken as the basis.
  5. Infants from a few months to 1 year of age can be measured with a rope. First, we measure the foot with a rope, and then apply the fixed length to the ruler and get the result in centimeters. nine0006
  6. Please refer to the size chart of the correct shoe manufacturer.

Important

  • Orthopedists do not recommend choosing shoes with a margin of more than 0.5-1 cm. The exception is winter shoes, for which a margin of 1-1.5 cm is allowed.
  • For shoes for the first step, the free margin is 1 cm.

Tips

  • Measurements are best taken at the end of the day, when the blood rushes to the legs and the foot increases slightly in size.
  • Infants from a few months to 1 year of age can be measured with a rope. First, we measure the foot with a rope, and then apply the fixed length to the ruler and get the result in millimeters. nine0006
  • Feet must be measured with socks on. the way a child will wear shoes.

Note

Incorrectly chosen footwear in childhood is one of the causes of flat feet in adolescence, which leads to a distortion of posture. Wearing tight shoes leads to impaired blood circulation, and in boots and boots “for growth” the position of the leg is so loose that the gait becomes shuffling.

However, don’t rely on your baby’s feelings when selecting the size. In a small child, the nerve endings of the limbs are not fully formed, so he may not feel discomfort when wearing shoes that are smaller. The task of parents is to regularly measure the child’s leg: from 1 year to one and a half years, measurement is done 1 time in 3 months, from 2 years old – 1 time in 4 months, from 3 to 15 years old – 1 time in 6-9months.

). It establishes a correspondence between metric shoe sizes (the length of the foot in centimeters for which this size is calculated) and standard shoe sizes generally accepted in Europe and the Russian Federation. nine0003

The given dimensional grid is built on the basis of GOST data. The correspondence of sizes in a particular pair of shoes may differ from it and quite significantly – in Totto, for example, some models differ by more than a size from the tables according to GOST. Therefore, in order to decide on the choice of size, one must be guided by the data indicated in the product card:

nine0033 220

  • It is important to understand that the length of the shoe insole will be 5-8 mm longer than the length of the foot indicated in the table. This is due to the fact that when choosing shoes, it is necessary to provide for a margin, which should be at least 5 mm. The maximum margin depends on seasonality and is 10-15 mm for summer shoes, 15-20 mm for winter shoes. nine0006
  • When measuring the length of the foot, it must be ensured that the weight of the body is completely transferred to the leg whose foot is being measured. The distance is measured from the tips of the thumb to the edge of the heel of the child. When measuring, you do not need to add a margin – it is added later, when choosing a size. The measurement should be made as accurately as possible, because. an error of 5 mm is an error per one dimensional step.
  • The stock that will remain in a particular pair of shoes depends on the manufacturer, seasonality of shoes, collection and model line. In this regard, if you have exact requirements for the size of the stock, you need to measure the foot and indicate when placing an order that you need to measure the insole in a particular model. nine0006
  • Current GOSTs define only the length of the foot. But its width and instep height are determined by the shoe manufacturer. For this reason, we recommend ordering one additional shoe size per fitting. This will eliminate the situation when the size along the length of the foot is chosen correctly, but does not fit the height of the lift.
  • Even if your child has already worn shoes of a certain manufacturer and you are planning to buy the next size, since the foot has already grown, we recommend that you do not refuse to measure the length of the foot and select the correct size – it is possible that the size grid has changed in the shoes of the new collection and, for example , size 28 will have the same insole length as size 27 from the previous collection, which has become small. This happens especially often in Miniman shoes. nine0006
  • GOST provides for a step of 5 mm between shoe sizes, as well as “half” sizes, which most manufacturers neglect. As a result, the step between the sizes can be either 5 or 10 mm. For example, size 28 is 5 mm larger than size 27. But size 29 is already 10 cm larger than size 28, since foreign manufacturers usually do not produce size 28.5, provided for by GOST.
  • Not all manufacturers strictly adhere to one dimensional grid. But for some of them, it has been constant for many years – Kuom’s size table, for example, has not changed for almost 10 years. The Russian “Kotofey” quite accurately complies with the requirements of GOST, too, for quite a long time. nine0006
  • Most important! If you doubt the correctness of the choice of size, and there is no desire to delve into the numbers and GOSTs given here, just measure the length of the child’s foot (see paragraph 2) and report the measurement received in the order.

6 Early Signs Of Being Left-Handed, So You Can Figure Out Your Baby’s Preferred Hand

Life

by Kelly Mullen-McWilliams

As a parent, I love trying to predict the inscrutable future. Will my daughter like gymnastics or ballet? Mac and cheese or lasagna? Reading a book alone or socializing in a crowd? Recently, though, I’ve been wondering about hand dominance. At 16 months old, she seems pretty ambidextrous to me, but I’m watching for the tell-tale signs that she really prefers one hand over the other. Turns out, there are some early signs of being left-handed, and there are things you can (and can’t) do to help hand dominance develop on schedule.

“Parents should know that hand dominance is something that happens naturally for most children,” explains occupational therapist Keri Wilmot of Understood.org, in an email interview with Romper. “Just like many children learn to walk and talk, it’s another skill that emerges over time, as part of normal development.

Most children will show a preference for one hand over the other between the ages of 2 and 3, according to Momtastic, but, as with everything else, this will vary for individual children, and some won’t show true hand dominance until much later — even as late as age 5 or 6. Interestingly, only 10 percent of children are left-handed, reported Parents.

For your baby, developing a dominant hand is a process of discovery. By offering them opportunities to practice their fine motor skills and by carefully observing them as they interact with their ever-growing world, you can take this journey right along with them.

1

Having Lefty Parents

Even before your baby is born, he has a genetic predisposition to being left-handed. For one thing, boys are more likely than girls to be left-handed, reported Momtastic, and children with one lefty parent are twice as likely as the general population to scribble with their left, reported CNN. Two lefty parents further increases the odds, reported BackUp Care, giving their children a 25 to 50 percent chance of left-handedness.

Whatever their genetic background, babies start out using both hands interchangeably, and according to Wilmot, it’s important that they have this opportunity to develop strength on both sides. In fact, an obvious preference for one hand over the other before your baby turns 1 year old is something you should mention to your pediatrician, because it could signal a motor delay, according to Momtastic.

2

Holding A Spoon

“At first, young children will use both hands to complete activities like stacking blocks,” says Wilmot. Gradually, however, you’ll notice your baby favoring one hand over the other, especially in daily tasks, like playing or eating.

Left-handed children will eventually begin holding or stabilizing their cereal bowl with their non-dominant (right) hand, while manipulating the spoon with their more dextrous left. If you notice your young baby favoring one hand at meal time, don’t do anything to reinforce it. Instead, just let it happen naturally as your child’s coordination improves.

“Many times we inadvertently reinforce the use of a hand by always putting something on a certain side of their high chair or handing them an item and placing it in one hand,” says Wilmot. In this case, however, the process of developing hand dominance is valuable in and of itself. Try placing a piece of food or a utensil smack in the middle of your child’s tray and see which hand they use without encouragement from you.

3

Stirring (Counterclockwise)

According to Momtastic, left-handed children will stir a pot counterclockwise when they play pretend in the kitchen with you — or, you know, underfoot while you’re trying to cook a real meal — while right-handed children will tend to whisk clockwise. Neat, huh?

4

Using Scissors

As the world turns, babies become toddlers, and toddlers become preschoolers learning to use those kid-safe scissors. According to Wilmot, hand dominance actually matters most for children in preschool and kindergarten, who scribble, write, and draw all day. Having a preferred, stronger hand helps them to be more “efficient and automatic” as they learn crucial new skills.

“If a child is not showing a hand dominance and it is impacting their ability to complete activities their peers are doing, then it might mean that their skills are developmentally delayed and speaking with an occupational therapist about it might be helpful,” says Wilmot. Some examples of activities that benefit from a stronger hand include using scissors to cut out shapes (while a non-dominant hand supports the paper), she says, drawing shapes or letters, and self-feeding with a fork or spoon without excessive spilling.

5

Kicking A Ball

Not surprisingly, southpaws will generally prefer to kick a ball with their left leg, according to Made for Mums, and they’ll have better balance on their left when standing on one leg, too. Just keep in mind that this isn’t a definitive sign in the early years, as kids want to experiment with both sides.

In fact, according to Backup Care, daily, automatic activities like eating and grooming are a better sign of hand dominance than which hand they use to catch a ball.

6

Holding A Crayon

I don’t know a parent of a toddler who doesn’t own a million crayons, and that’s a good thing. Play is more than just “play” for young kids who use toys to develop important cognitive and motor skills, day in and day out. As noted before, left-handed children will do the most complex work with their left hand, and that includes scribbling on a kid’s menu.

“Play helps improve hand dominance, especially activities that involve using the small muscles of the hand,” Wilmot observes. “There are many activities that can help with fine motor skill development, but some fun activities to try include coloring with crayons, cutting with scissors, painting, stacking blocks, stringing beads, eating with utensils, completing puzzles, and manipulating sensory textures like Play-Doh.

How to Tell If Your Baby Will Be Right- or Left-Handed

Good Moments / Getty Images

I recently gave birth to my third son, and I’ve already heard, ‘He is such a clone of your husband!” Of course, as he grows and develops he’ll change so much. I may recognize my own facial expression in him, or perhaps I’ll notice that he has my partner’s smile. My 4-month-old boy is also at the age where many of my patients’ parents start asking me whether their child will be right-handed or left-handed.

As with physical characteristics, hand dominance (or hand preference) — which is defined as the hand that is most commonly used, is most nimble, and is the fastest at performing tasks — develops over time. Most people are right handed. About 10 percent of the population is left-handed and a very small number of people are mixed-handed (or ambidextrous).

Hand Dominance in Babies

Early on, babies should use both hands almost equally. (If you notice that your baby has a strong hand preference before age 1, talk to your pediatrician; it could be a sign of motor delays or neurological problems.) Most children will choose a dominant hand between 2- and 3-years-old. Some children will show a hand preference as early as 15- to 18-months-old and some will not choose a dominant hand until age 5 or 6.

Experts aren’t sure why, but a large part of whether your child will be right- or left-handed is determined by genetics. In fact, twice as many boys as girls will be left-handed.

To get a sense of whether your child will be right- or left-handed, watch which hand he uses for common tasks, such as picking up a toy or feeding himself. You can also look at what direction your child stirs a pot during pretend play; if he stirs counterclockwise, it’s more likely that he’s left-handed. Another clue to whether your child will be right- or left-handed is which hand he uses to hold a crayon. And, when you roll a ball to your toddler, he’ll usually reach for the ball with his dominant hand.

Some parents believe that if a child is left-handed, you should try to “train” her to be right-handed — but you shouldn’t, because some part of hand dominance is neurologically hard wired. Trying to force her to learn to use her non-dominant hand will only lead to frustration and lack of confidence. It also will prevent her from performing tasks to the best of her ability, which can damage her self-esteem.

If your child is part of the 10 percent of the population that is left-handed, be supportive. For example, you can buy special left-handed scissors for him. And, take heart: In sports, being left-handed is often considered an advantage!

Babies and toddlers develop quickly and are rapidly changing. Watching your child grow and accomplish tasks is fun. As your toddler starts to take on more common everyday tasks you can watch and see which hand he uses. Whether your child is among the 90 percent who are right hand dominant or the less common left-handed bunch, celebrate who he is. Enjoy the new things he can do each day and support him — all while having fun!

Article | Left-handed child: advantage or disadvantage?

Tomorrow, August 13th, is International Left-Handed Day. This is an unofficial holiday for people who prefer to use their left hand. Who are left-handed people, how to behave with them and whether it is worth retraining them, how parents can determine if their child is left-handed – all this is told by Senior Researcher Center for Interdisciplinary Research of Modern Childhood MSUPE , Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Preschool Pedagogy and Psychology, Faculty Psychology of Education” MSUPE E Katerina Klopotova .

Who are lefties?

Traditionally, a left-handed person is called a person whose activity of the left hand prevails over the right, respectively, in the process of use, he gives preference to it.

Lefties make up 5-15% of the world’s population. In our country, according to various sources, there are about 15-18 million people. There is an opinion that this number began to increase after 1985 years old. Until that time, children had been stubbornly retrained, forcing them to write and draw with their right hand, use cutlery, and play sports using their right hand. Most of the older generation of left-handers have experienced this first hand.

Many Russian celebrities in their interviews have repeatedly talked about a similar problem. So, the actor Viktor Sukhorukov recalled that the teacher, trying to force him to write with his right hand, even beat the brushes with a ruler. On the set of Maxim Averin, some directors forced him to be right-handed in the frame. But it looked unnatural, and they understood the futility of this activity. But the singer and actress Elka (Elizaveta Ivantsiv) was lucky. In elementary school, she showed character and refused to write with her right hand. Her wise mother found medical literature that recommended not to retrain left-handed people, and showed these tips to the director. So Elka became the only left-hander at school who was left alone. nine0025

Reasons for the birth of left-handers

Today we can say that there is a genetic predisposition to this. As a rule, if a child is left-handed, then one of the parents or grandparents is also left-handed. But this is optional. There are three confirmed factors of left-handedness:

  • genetic;
  • traumatic;
  • environmental factors (imitation, compulsion, overlearning, etc.).

The literature provides data that about 2% of left-handed children are born to right-handed parents, if one parent is right-handed – 17%, and two left-handers – 46%. nine0025

Left-handed and right-handed scientists publish interesting facts. For example, rock paintings, cave walls and Egyptian pyramids show people doing something with their right hand. The tools and products of the ancient gunsmiths of the Paleolithic era were also intended for use with their right hand. However, there are other works that prove that in the Stone Age there were the same number of right-handed and left-handed people, and in the Bronze Age there were already two-thirds of right-handers. nine0025

By the way, observations of newborn children show that most often they grab everything with their left hand. An interesting fact is that right-handed people can do something with their left hand.

Right-handed versus left-handed

There have always been many myths about the advantage of left-handers. The most common is that left-handers are more successful in creative activities, more emotional and sensitive. But there are no reliable data on the creative superiority of left-handed people over right-handed people today. Of course, left-handers differ in some features. Write “Alice Through the Looking-Glass” and come up with the smile of the Cheshire cat, which remains when he has caught a cold, perhaps only left-handed Lewis Carroll could. This doesn’t come to everyone’s mind. nine0025

The advantage of being left-handed can definitely be said in pair or team sports. A left-handed opponent is an atypical opponent, his actions and movements are more difficult to predict for right-handers, who are the majority. This gives him a definite advantage.

The desire to compare left-handers and right-handers is due to the ordinary idea of the different functioning of the cerebral hemispheres and the dominance of the left hemisphere in right-handers, and the right hemisphere in left-handers. To date, it has already been proven that the work of the brain is much more complex and finely organized, and this kind of distinction is unreasonable. nine0025

Based on the research conducted today, we can say that left-handed children quite often begin to speak later than their peers, they often have difficulties with the development of motor skills, in elementary school reading and writing are given to them with great difficulty, they have a lot of speech therapy problems.

But there is also evidence that many left-handers who had trouble doing well in elementary school later became even more successful than their peers. This is due to the fact that a left-handed child has to make more efforts to learn than a right-handed one: the teacher shows all the actions for right-handed people, all prescriptions are made under right-handed people, even an oblique vertical ruler in notebooks is for right-handed people, she knocks down left-handers. A left-handed child is forced to work harder than his peers. He develops ways of mastering the material that other children do not have, and he subsequently successfully uses them all his life, having some advantage over right-handers. nine0025

There are many examples when a left-hander with outstanding talent, after retraining him to work with his right hand, lost all these abilities. But if you return it to its nature, then the talent returned to the person.

Recommendations to parents

When raising a left-handed child, it is necessary to adhere to several fundamental positions:

  • do not draw his attention to the fact that he is left-handed;
  • teach the child to use both hands, this can be done with the help of ball games, modeling, playing musical instruments; nine0042
  • properly equip the child’s work area – the light should fall on the right; at school, ask the teacher to seat the baby on the left at the desk so that the right hand of the neighbor does not interfere with him;
  • keep in mind that the left-hander thinks figuratively, while preparing the child for school, use visual aids to facilitate memorization of the material;
  • while reading, invite your child to use a bookmark, a ruler, or just a piece of paper: it can be difficult for a left-hander to follow the lines in the text, and the ruler will help not to get lost and not jump over the line; nine0042
  • warn all specialists working with the baby – kindergarten teachers, additional education teachers, coaches and school teachers should treat the left-hander with understanding and attention, without singling him out in the team;
  • make sure that no one from the environment expresses regret or irritation about the non-standard “habits” of the child;
  • be aware of the slowness in teaching left-handers to read and write – you should not choose groups and classes with an intensive program; nine0042
  • be loyal to the manifestations of the features of the formation of memory, thinking, attention and speech.

The main thing that parents need to understand and explain to their child is that left-handedness is not a pathology!

Retrain or not?

Parents who face such a choice need to understand that the dominant hand (if it is not a consequence of some kind of injury) is laid at birth and is due to the functioning of the brain.

If you decide to retrain a child, you must understand that you are interfering with the work of the brain. A striking example is the clock mechanism, where all the gears are interconnected and ensure synchronous operation. If you try to turn one gear in the opposite direction, the operation of the entire mechanism will go wrong. Same with the lefty. If the baby has the leading hand with the left hand and, performing actions with the right hand, he does it more slowly and less successfully, you need to understand that his body (the whole body!) Functions successfully when actions are performed with the left hand. nine0025

By retraining a child, we disrupt the functioning of the brain. The consequences of this are usually quite unpleasant. First of all, it can slow down the normal development process. Huge resources of the child will be spent on adapting to a situation that contradicts the logic of his development. The main disorders that appear in overtrained left-handers are associated with impaired development of cognitive processes, impaired speech, motor skills and the nervous system. In the cognitive sphere, the processes of processing and remembering information are disrupted. In the development of speech, logopedic problems appear. More stable and pronounced difficulties appear, in comparison with “ordinary” left-handers, in orientation in space and on a sheet of paper. Relearning almost always entails nervous tics and stuttering. nine0025

How can you tell if your child is left-handed?

As a rule, by the age of 5, most children are already determined with the dominant hand. Just by watching the child, interacting with him, parents in most cases see which hand he performs actions more often and more successfully.

There is a group of children who equally successfully use both hands – the so-called ambidexters. Parents of such children are advised to orient the child to the right hand in the process of interaction, but if it is more convenient for him to use the left, do not insist. nine0025

From 1 to 1.5 years old, a normal healthy child does not pay attention to which hand is dominant when he takes a spoon, cup or toy. Meanwhile, if you measure their strength indicators, then for right-handers in the right hand they will be higher than in the left. If you do not focus the attention of the crumbs on which hand he eats, draws, plays with, then it may well turn out that the baby, when he grows up, will be able to control both his left and right hands with equal success.

At the age of five, you can check with the help of various tests, which are many on the Internet. Let’s take one of them. nine0025

The child performs, the adult records the result.

  1. We hook the fingers into the lock. If the thumb of the left hand is on top, we write L, if the right one – P.
  2. We aim at an imaginary target. If the child closed his left eye, write the letter P on a piece of paper, if the right eye – L.
  3. Cross your arms over your chest. If the right hand is on top, we write the letter P on the sheet, if the left hand is L.
  4. During applause, left-handed children usually beat with their left hand against their right (we write L), if vice versa with their right on their left hand, we write P.

If you wrote down on the sheet PPPP, then the child is 100% right-handed, if LLLL, then, accordingly, he is 100% left-handed.

If the answer contains both letters, then you can see the percentage of dominance of one of the hemispheres of the brain.

Famous left-handers

The child needs to give examples of famous left-handed personalities who have achieved world recognition. These are brilliant Alexander Pushkin, Hans Christian Andersen, Leo Tolstoy, Aristotle.

Musicians and composers: Niccolo Paganini, Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgant Amadeus Mozart, Frederic Chopin, Sergei Rachmaninov, Sergei Prokofiev.

Left-handed artists: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael Santi, Rubens, Picasso.

“Left-handed” scientists were Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Ivan Pavlov, spouses Pierre Curie and Maria Sklodowska-Curie.

It is known that Gaius Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Jeanne d’Arc, Napoleon Bonaparte, Benjamin Franklin, Fidel Castro, Winston Churchill and others were left-handed.

The passion of the legendary actor Charlie Chaplin was playing the violin. To enjoy his favorite pastime, the stellar left-hander had to pull the strings on the instrument in reverse order. “On the contrary” is holding a guitar and the famous “Beatle” Paul McCartney.

There are a lot of left-handers among athletes, for example Pele, Oleg Blokhin. The famous Argentine footballer Diego Maradona scored more than three hundred goals during his sports career, but only three of them with his right foot.

And tennis player Maria Sharapova is a unique case. She is not left-handed, but ambidextrous, equally effective with both right and left hands.

If you give such examples to your child, especially choosing stories from his area of interest, this will give him additional motivation.

10 tasks to help determine this exactly

Is your child left-handed or right-handed: 10 tasks to help determine this exactly

nine0002 You can test yourself too

Very young children often use both hands equally well, and it can be difficult to know which hand is dominant. In addition, some people who are left-handed by nature can also develop their right hand well – and then their left-handedness becomes unobvious.

Meanwhile, it would be nice to understand exactly which of the hands is the main one, because left-handed children are arranged a little differently than right-handed children. They have a different way of processing information and different emotional reactions. nine0025

Invite the subject to fold their hands into a lock. The test should be performed quickly, without preparation. It is believed that for right-handers, the thumb of the right hand lies on top, for left-handers – the left.

Fold your arms at chest level. It is generally accepted that for right-handers, the right hand lies on top of the left forearm, and for left-handers, the left hand lies on top, on the right forearm.

For right-handers, the right hand is more active during applause, for left-handers, the left. This test is considered more informative in adults, and children often applaud, joyfully clapping both hands. nine0025

Watch this video . It is necessary to answer a simple question: in which direction is the train moving? Those who think that the train is moving to the left have a more developed right hemisphere (like a left-hander). If to the right, then, respectively, – left (as in a right-hander).

Tie a few knots in a string or string, then have your child untie them. The right-handed person will untie the knots with his right hand, and with his left hand he will only help / hold, and the left-hander, respectively, on the contrary, will untie the knots with his left, and will hold with his right hand. nine0025

Check with which foot the child pushes off when jumping: if the pushing leg is left, then this is a sign of left-handedness, if right, then, on the contrary, right-handed.

Take a sheet of paper and two pencils. Give the child one in each hand. And let him draw with both hands at the same time: a circle, a square, a triangle. We observe: the movements performed by the leading hand can be slower, but more accurate. The lines of the figures drawn by the leading hand are clearer, smoother, the tremor (hand trembling) is less pronounced, the corners are not smoothed, the connection points do not diverge. nine0025

Some researchers recommend performing this task with eyes closed, then it is possible to more clearly highlight the violation of the shape, proportions of the geometric figure, which is drawn by the non-dominant hand.

Ask the child to imagine an imaginary target in front of him. Let him raise his hand as if he had a bow and arrows in his hands, close one eye and take aim. Which eye did he close?! If right, then this is a sign of a left-hander, and if left, then a right-hander.

An imaginary telephone rang in the room. Which hand will the child pick up the phone with? And which ear will he put it on? If the hand is left – he is left-handed, the right – right-handed. nine0025

It’s simple: sit on a chair/sofa/armchair/stool and cross one leg over the other. The leg that is on top is the leading one.

8-Week-Old Baby Milestones – Happiest Baby

By
Dr. Harvey Karp, MD, FAAP

Your baby is about 2 months old! It’s too soon to break out the cake, but you should celebrate, nonetheless. In the past eight weeks, you’ve gone from meeting for the first time to being unable to imagine life without your little love.

8-Week-Old Baby Sleep

Your 8-week-old baby probably racks up about 13 to 14 hours of sleep total these days. Your early bird likely starts their day around 6am and takes about three to five naps a day, totaling about four to eight hours of daytime sleep with wake windows of about an hour to two hours between each sleep session. At night, 8-week-olds start to sleep longer, potentially clocking five- to eight-hour stretches (though they still will wake for a feeding or two!).

8-Week-Old Sample Sleep Schedule

Every baby’s routine will be different, but here is an example of what an 8-week-old baby’s sleep schedule might look like.

6am                           Wake Up

6:30–7:30am             Nap #1

9–11am                      Nap #2

12:30–2:30pm           Nap #3

4–6 pm                      Nap #4

7–8pm                       Nap #5

9:30pm                      Bedtime Routine

10pm                         Night-Night

11:30pm                     Dream Feed

2:30am                      Night Feed

8-week-old baby sleeping more than usual?

Around this age, many babies start consolidating their sleep, so you might notice longer sleep stretches at night (especially if they’re using SNOO!). At the same time, they’re feeding less frequently than they did when they were first born, which allows for extended shut-eye. This is generally a development to cheer, but if you have any concerns, of course, don’t hesitate to call your pediatrician.

Your 8-Week-Old Baby’s Development

Roll, baby, roll!

If your baby has been hitting the tummy time gym hard, they may surprise you with a 360-degree swivel—like the hands of the clock, pivoting the location of their head and feet around the belly button—or a full back-to-stomach roll over. Yay! Rocking and rolling from their tummy to back is a first step on the track to crawling, walking, and running.

But this new ability can also introduce some first accidents, like falling off the bed. Even when you thought you safely placed the baby in the middle of the bed…three rolls in a row can end with a terrible “thud”…and your baby shrieking on the floor!

Also, rolling means you need to stop swaddling soon. Proper swaddling—arms in—can make it harder for a baby to roll over and reduce the risk of SIDS, so it can be the safest thing for your baby. And, if your baby is in SNOO, you can rest easy knowing that our special swaddle prevents risking rolling, allowing babies to sleep longer, cry less, and continue enjoying the swaddling they love. However, rolling to the stomach when swaddled can immediately raise the risk of SIDS!  So, if you’re not using SNOO, once your baby can roll, it’s time to check in with your doctor to see when they recommend you stop swaddling.

8-Week-Old Baby Milestones

As you approach the 2-month mark, your doctor will likely have you keep an eye out for these baby milestones. Below are the milestones that most babies achieve by the end of their third month. But remember, every baby is different. So, if you are ever concerned about your baby’s development, don’t hesitate to bring it up with your child’s health care provider.

2-Month Social and Emotional Milestones

  • Smiles when you talk or smile at them
  • Calms when spoken to or picked up
  • Looks at parent(s)
  • Seems happy to see you when you approach

2-Month Language Milestones

  • Makes sounds other than crying
  • Reacts to loud noises

2-Month Cognitive Milestones

  • Watches as you move
  • Looks at a toy for several seconds
  • Can hold head up when on belly
  • Moves both arms and both legs
  • Briefly opens hands

    Your 8-Week-Old Baby’s Health

    The 2-Month Check-Up

    If you’re eager to learn just how much your baby has grown, you’ll have a chance at the 2-month checkup. Leading up to your baby’s 2-month checkup, you’ve probably been compiling a list of questions. But isn’t it funny how those questions can escape you when you’re put on the spot? It can really help to write down your concerns before the appointment.

    At the visit, there will be the fun stuff—like finding out how much your lovebug has grown in length, weight, and head size. The doctor/nurse will also take a close look at your baby’s vision, muscle strength, reflexes, organs (from lungs to liver), and check out the soft spots on the head.

    2-Month Vaccines

    And super-important (maybe a bit less fun): It’s also time for your baby’s first vaccines. No one (adults included!) likes shots, so prepare to soothe your baby afterward with the 5 S’s, a feeding, or whatever gives comfort. Ask your doctor if you should give some acetaminophen (Tylenol) drops.

    Tears aside, this is truly good news! You and your baby are blessed to live at a time when doctors can protect vulnerable little babies from the diseases that used to cripple or kill them by the thousand! Most doctors and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that 2-month-old babies get protection from:

    • Whooping cough and tetanus (Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis – DTaP)
    • Meningitis and other fatal infections (Haemophilus influenzae type B, also called H flu. This bad-news infection is not related to the viral infection, influenza.)
    • Pneumonia and ear infections (Pneumococcal)
    • Infant paralysis (Polio)
    • Severe diarrhea (Rotovirus)
    • Hepatitis B (this is the second dose, the first is given at birth)

    That’s quite a few, but there are good reasons why that’s exactly the right amount…Vaccines have saved millions of lives and prevented terrible suffering of children and adults! Bottom line, your baby’s immune system is magnificent at protecting against many exposures…all at the same time.

    Why Do Babies Like Chewing on Their Hands?

    Why do babies chew on their hands?

    Seeing your baby chew on their hand can seem rather disconcerting. Are they hungry? Do their hands hurt or itch? Are they teething? If only they could answer your questions and tell you what’s going on! Unfortunately, that’s not an option. So instead, we have to turn to the experts for answers.

    Most pediatricians agree that your baby is chewing on their hands simply because they have found them. Babies aren’t born knowing the parts of their bodies or how to control them. But after a few months, they’ll eventually “find” their own hands and realize that those hands are attached to the rest of their body. Putting their hands in their mouth and chewing on them is simply another step in the process of discovering their own bodies, how they work, and what they can do.

    Take a quiz

    Find out what you can do with our Health Assistant

    Your baby is chewing on their hands. Is it teething?

    If your baby starts to chew on their hands when they’re about four to seven months old, it could be a sign that they’re teething. Their first teeth beginning to break through their gum tissue causes some discomfort. This discomfort causes them to bite on different things, including their hands, to scratch their gums and find relief. Teething is usually accompanied by other signs and symptoms, most commonly:

    • Increased drooling
    • Decreased appetite
    • Swollen gums
    • Fussiness
    • Difficulty sleeping

    Other babies might chew on their hands when they’re hungry. Other early signs of hunger include:

    • Smacking their lips
    • Flailing their limbs
    • Fussiness
    • Crying
    • Rooting

    If you’re wondering whether your baby is “eating” their hands because they’re hungry, think about when you last fed them. If your baby isn’t hungry, they could be chewing their hands as a simple game.

    Other babies chew on their hands as a form of self-soothing, which is a sign that they’re developing well. This could happen when they’re overstimulated and need to calm down. They could also play with their hands when they’re bored and can’t engage with anyone but themselves.

    Should you do something when your baby is “eating” their hands?

    If you’re concerned about your baby chewing on their hand, try to figure out what is causing it. The easiest thing to do is to check whether they’re hungry. If they take your breastmilk or a bottle when offered, and stop chewing their hands once they’re fed, hunger was probably the cause.

    If your baby isn’t hungry and they’re still chewing on their hands, there could be other factors at play. If they’re simply playing with their hands and discovering their bodies, it’s important to keep in mind that they’ll probably be reaching for objects and taking them to their mouths soon.

    In this case, you should try to create a childproof environment at home. This means making sure that sharp, toxic, small, or otherwise dangerous objects are out of your baby’s reach. Make sure that they can only grab objects that are safe to chew.

    When a newborn is sucking their hand because they are bored, try engaging them with sounds, music, figures, or colors. Or if they’re overstimulated, you could cuddle them in a quiet room for a bit or play some soothing music. You can also provide a pacifier for them.

    If your child is chewing on their hand because they’re teething, there are several tips that could help relieve their discomfort. There are many teething toys available on the market.

    Some of the most popular models include teething rings, some of which are filled with water that can be chilled in the fridge. The cool water can help relieve your baby’s aching gums. Other products, such as teething gels, can numb their gums and relieve teething symptoms.

    Excessive hand chewing might also be a symptom of oral thrush. Other symptoms of thrush include mood changes, refusing to nurse, and having white velvety sores in the mouth and on the tongue. If that’s the case, contact your health care provider.

    It’s important to keep in mind that in many cases, it’s perfectly normal for your baby to chew on their hand. While it’s normal to be concerned as a new parent, there is no need to worry about these behaviors.

    If you fear you’re worrying too much, can’t bond with your baby, or are worried about your feelings as a new parent, talk to your health care provider about postpartum depression. With help and treatment, you’ll soon be feeling like your old self again.

    When should newborns stop sucking their hands?

    Every child develops differently and will learn to stop sucking on their hands at a different age. Some babies never do this, while others love their pacifiers, and others continue to suck their hands even after their first birthday.

    If you’re worried about your baby sucking on their hand, talk to your pediatrician about it. They’ll be able to address any concerns and help you stop this behavior when your baby is a bit older. When your child is 18–24 months old, you’ll probably have an easier time trying to break this habit.

    It’s normal to worry when your baby does things you can’t understand. Your baby could be chewing their hand for many reasons, from simple boredom to self-soothing, hunger, or teething.

    Regardless of the cause, this is a very common behavior that most babies exhibit at some point during their first months of life. In most cases, it’s perfectly normal and your baby will grow out of it with time!

    Teething in a child

    How to understand that a child is teething? How to help a child with teething?

    Most parents are puzzled by these questions when baby teeth are just beginning to appear.

    In general, the appearance of teeth in a child occurs at the age of four to seven months. This period is also associated with the introduction of complementary foods into the baby’s diet, which will greatly help him in the fight against the symptoms of teething.

    So, what is the harbinger of teething and how to reduce the discomfort of pain to your child? nine0003

    Temperature

    An increase in temperature during teething in babies is considered normal, as it is associated with local inflammation of the gums. However, a slight increase in temperature is considered normal when the first teeth appear. If a child’s temperature rises sharply to 38 degrees and above and lasts more than 3 days, then this indicates an infection and the baby should be immediately shown to the doctor.

    When teething, a child’s general immunity decreases, which makes it possible to pick up an infection and get sick. This is due both to the body’s reaction to the teeth, and to the fact that after 6 months of breastfeeding, the child’s body switches to the development of its own immunity and stops taking antibodies from the mother’s body. Therefore, when teething, monitor the temperature of the child and his well-being! nine0003

    Drooling

    As soon as parents see that the baby has increased salivation, they are already waiting for the first tooth to appear in 1-2 months. Saliva is a normal reaction of the body to inflammation of the gums, and they also help to protect the infection from entering the oral cavity. Children’s drool is everywhere in the house, the baby is all in saliva and how to deal with it?

    Increased salivation causes the entire chin of the baby to dry out, so it is important to monitor the baby’s skin during this period. First of all, you need to buy a soft fabric bib for the child. Soft fabric with a waterproof back will not only be pleasant to the body and protect the baby from wet spots, but it will also be possible to blot the skin of the child, removing drool from his face. It is important not to rub the skin, as the top layer is injured, which will lead to redness and the development of allergies, and be sure to lubricate with baby cream or body lotion so that it does not dry out. nine0003

    When a child sleeps, drool gets into his throat, which can provoke a cough in a child, and therefore restless sleep. To prevent this, after the child falls asleep, turn his head on its side, laying something under the bottom so that saliva flows from his mouth and does not interfere with his sleep.

    Runny nose

    Snot also comes with saliva, as it is a reaction of the nasal mucosa to inflammation in the gums. You can help the baby by washing the nose and using an aspirator for the smallest. nine0003

    Normally, a runny nose during teething disappears after 2-3 days and does not particularly cause discomfort to the baby. If you see that the nature of the discharge has changed, the child has difficulty breathing and the runny nose lasts more than 3 days, consult a doctor!

    Loose stools

    Due to the fact that the body secretes a lot of saliva, and the gastrointestinal tract can not cope with such a quantity, disorders in the digestive system occur. During teething, diarrhea is considered common if it lasts no more than 2 days and no more than 3 times a day. nine0003

    During this period, monitor the dynamics of the child’s stool and give him more fluids, as the baby’s body loses a lot of water. Attach the baby to the breast and feed more breast milk, which is 80% water. So you will maintain the water balance in the body, and the sucking process itself will calm the baby in case of discomfort.

    It is also not necessary to introduce complementary foods or a new type of complementary foods, as the child’s body can reject it and then the child will have a negative reaction to some product. nine0003

    Gums and pain

    When teething, one of the main symptoms is moodiness, caused by the fact that the baby’s gums begin to swell, itch and hurt. Very often you can see how a child pulls something into his mouth, or begins to put his fingers in his mouth to relieve pain.

    Reduce your baby’s pain and discomfort with a teether. The best option is a silicone teether, as it is the easiest to disinfect, it does not require special care and can serve as a toy for a child. nine0003

    Banana teether is the most popular teether because it can be used as a baby’s first brush. Thanks to silicone bristles, it does not injure the gums, it massages well, it is selected even in hard-to-reach places and it is easy to hang it on the holder and hold it in the hands of the baby.

    Buying a teether in Ukraine is now easy and simple, because it is the most affordable, easy and safe way to help your child with teething.

    To reduce pain, the silicone teether can be cooled and offered to the baby. Also, thanks to its unusual shape, it will interest the baby, helping to reduce his attention to pain, help develop fine motor skills of the hands and contribute to the study of new words.

    nine0002 Your baby is 2 months old. It is this period of life that pleases and surprises parents: just a couple of weeks ago, the baby only ate and slept, and now he is more and more awake and begins to explore the world for the first time.

    Two months is also such an age when mothers, especially young ones, have their first anxieties. Not everything can be learned from books and from experienced grandmothers, and new parents are concerned about a variety of questions: is the child developing correctly, and what should a two-month-old baby be able to do in general, and whether it is necessary to strive for strict development standards. nine0003

    If you are one of the parents who are concerned about the proper development of the child, you can remain calm. The norms for the development of children at 2 months have long been established by pediatricians, and you yourself will be able to assess how your baby complies with them and, if necessary, help the baby.

    Physical development

    In the first year of life, the baby’s physical indicators are monitored especially carefully – height, weight, head and chest circumference primarily indicate compliance with developmental standards. But deviations from the average up or down are not a reason to believe that the child is developing incorrectly, especially if the baby was born prematurely or there is a genetic predisposition to a certain body type. nine0003

    Average indicators of the physical development of a two-month-old child:

    Measured parameter Boys norm Girls norm
    Weight (in kg) 4.2-6 4.2-5.5
    Height (in cm) 53.8-59.4 53.3-59.3
    Head circumference (in cm) 39.1 38.3
    Chest circumference (in cm) 39 38.1

    Other norms for the physical development of a baby at 2 months:

    1. Even if the weight of a boy or girl is less or more than average norms, pay attention to a more important indicator – weight gain over the past month. For a period of one to two months, the child should gain about 800 grams. nine0106 The total increase, taking into account the first month of life, will be 1300-1500 grams.
    2. Average changes in other indicators: growth over the past month has increased by 3 centimeters, head and chest circumference by 2 centimeters.
    3. The total duration of sleep is reduced compared to the sleep of a newborn and is approximately 18 hours.
    4. The hairline of the head changes: instead of the fluff, a permanent bulbous cover begins to grow.
    5. The child begins to better recognize pain and other unpleasant sensations – for example, feels discomfort from wet diapers. That is why a previously silent baby at the age of two months sometimes begins to cry and scream a lot. nine0064

    Differences between boys and girls

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    There are no significant differences in height and weight between boys and girls at two months. On average, boys are larger, but a girl who exceeds the average height and weight is not uncommon and is not considered a deviation from the norm.

    According to the observations of both doctors and parents of children of different sexes, according to some indicators, girls develop faster than boys. This is true: fewer female babies are born than male babies, and girls have to learn different skills faster – this is how evolution ordered to maintain a balance between the two sexes. So, by the age of two months, girls hear and see better, react more sharply to stimuli. nine0003

    Physical ability

    What a two-month-old baby should be able to do – physical ability:

    • to hold a toy or other object that an adult put into his hand;
    • briefly, for about twenty seconds, hold your head upright and raise your shoulders while lying on your stomach;
    • from a position lying on his stomach with his head raised, try to turn his head from side to side, especially if something caught his attention. nine0064

    What a 2 month old baby should be able to do

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    The period of life up to three months is generally the most important for a child under one year old. And it is at two months that the child begins to behave meaningfully: the baby develops a variety of skills that confirm the normal development of motor activity, sensory organs, timely intellectual and neuropsychic development.

    Briefly about what the child is already doing well by the middle or end of the second month of life:

    • thanks to strengthened muscles, not only raises his head and chest while lying on his stomach, but also makes swimming movements with his arms and legs;
    • knows how to squeeze and unclench his hand, grabs a toy, fingers and hair of an adult;
    • brings brush to lips, can suck fingers;
    • holds its head for a few seconds when in the arms of an adult;
    • touches the hanging toy, pushes it away;
    • rubs eyes and nose with hands or fists; nine0064
    • smiles;
    • shows interest in sounds;
    • the first sounds appear in speech;
    • distinguishes between familiar and unfamiliar people;
    • briefly focuses on the subject of interest.

    Each aspect of the development of a two-month-old baby is described below in more detail.

    Motor activity and reflexes

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    At two months, the baby assumes completely different postures than the newborn. Legs in the supine position or on the stomach are no longer constantly bent due to the fact that muscle hypertonicity characteristic of newborns gradually becomes weaker. However, the baby still spends part of the time in the fetal position, which is normal for its age. nine0003

    The reflex is also weakened, due to which the newborn firmly rested his feet on the surface when he was held by an adult. A two-month-old baby still rests his feet on a crib, sofa or other support, but not so much. The breath holding reflex is preserved, but by the end of the second month of life, it usually completely fades away.

    Automatic walking and crawling reflexes develop when the child is held in the appropriate position. By two months, the baby occasionally assumes a swordsman’s position when lying on his back: he turns his head to the right and automatically straightens his right arm and right leg. The same thing happens when turning the head to the left, only with the left arm and leg. nine0003

    A two-month-old baby reacts differently to smells: when he smells a pleasant aroma, he freezes or smiles, when he catches an unpleasant smell, he wrinkles his nose and sneezes.

    Intellectual development

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    The behavior of a two-month-old baby is already quite conscious: he, to the best of his ability, learns the world and is able to establish simple cause-and-effect relationships. The kid understands that his mother is the main figure who takes care of him, and reacts to the presence of his mother differently than to other people: he smiles, tries to walk, follows his mother with his eyes. The child does not yet experience such complex emotions as fear or embarrassment and willingly goes into the arms of any adult. nine0003

    In a simple form, the baby expresses his attitude to objects: he is attracted to things that are interesting to him, repels uninteresting things or does not react to them at all. Produces simple, but already emotionally colored repetitive sounds, similar to singing. And although these first sounds seem unintelligible to others, these are the first attempts of the baby to repeat the speech of adults.

    Neuropsychic development, emotions

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    A child who is two months old experiences emotions and needs to respond to them. Crying changes: the cry ceases to be monotonous, like that of a newborn, intonation coloring appears. Sensitive mothers can determine the cause of discontent by the cry of their son or daughter: fatigue, soiled diapers, hunger, or something else. nine0003

    The baby’s smile becomes meaningful: he does not just raise the corners of his lips, but smiles in response to a certain event, for example, in response to a gentle voice. Some babies already know how to laugh at two months. The baby also cries and screams consciously, realizing that in this way you can attract the mother.

    The child not only smiles, but also uses different facial expressions. May frown and wrinkle nose, open mouth when spoken to. Holds a look at the person who is talking to him, can look at the face of the speaker for a long time and intently. nine0003

    The baby is aware that a mother or other person who is talking to him affectionately can take him in her arms and emotionally anticipates this event – makes impatient sounds, quickly moves his arms and legs.

    Sense organs

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    A baby grows up and every day his sense organs develop. The child sees and hears better compared to a newly born baby and, as a result, reacts more noticeably to stimuli.

    A two-month-old baby is interested in many objects, and by the middle of the second month of life, he tries to grab an attractive thing and hold it in his hand. It’s not always possible to grab it yet – at this age it is difficult to accurately calculate the trajectory of movement. But if an adult puts an object in a child’s hand, then the baby will hold it, tightly squeezing his palm. nine0003

    If you give a rattle to a two-month-old baby, he will quickly learn that the rattle makes sounds when it is moved. The baby begins to rattle the rattle consciously.

    Hearing becomes more sensitive, and the baby looks in the direction where the sounds come from, listens for a long time. May be frightened by harsh or unfamiliar sounds, shuddering and blinking frequently.

    Vision is also developing, and although the child is not yet able to distinguish small details of the surrounding world, bright and moving objects already capture the child’s attention. At the age of two months, the baby begins to squint, reacting to bright light. nine0003

    The baby continues to develop a threshold of taste sensations, but as a pleasant one, he only distinguishes a sweet taste. All other flavors are disgusting.

    Muscle tone

    Young parents are often worried about muscle hypertonicity in a two-month-old baby. Considering muscle tone a problem, moms and dads consult neurologists and pay for special massage sessions.

    But you shouldn’t worry too much about hypertonicity. At two months, muscle tone is still preserved in the arms and back. nine0105 On average, hypertonicity in infants completely disappears only by 6-8 months , but if it seems to you that your child has too strong muscle tone, record the vivid manifestations of muscle hypertonicity on video and show it to your pediatrician.

    Daily routine of a two-month-old baby

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    The well-established routine depends on the well-being of both mother and child. It is really important to organize the order of the day, but in a two-month-old baby, biorhythms are very different from those of, for example, a six-month-old baby. nine0003

    At the age of 2 months, the mother can only start preparing for the future regimen. And if a baby at this age falls asleep and wakes up at different times – this is a variant of the norm, there is no reason to worry.

    Gradually accustom your child to approximately the following daily routine:

    • 7.30 am — getting up;
    • every 2.5-3 hours – feeding. The frequency of feeding is set depending on the type of feeding: breastfeeding, mixed, completely artificial;
    • daytime sleep – 4-6 times a day lasting from 30 minutes to 3 hours; nine0064
    • 20.30 – bathing;
    • 21.00 – going to bed.

    The regimen of a two-month-old baby is never stable, with rare exceptions. And if your baby, for example, sleeps little at night, falls asleep late, often wakes up for night feedings, you will have to temporarily adjust to his rhythms. Usually, by four months, children themselves begin to sleep more at night, and stay awake during the day.

    Child development at 2 months: Dr. Komarovsky’s opinion

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    According to Yevgeny Komarovsky, the main problem with caring for children at the age of two months is the difficulty in determining the causes of crying. Mostly babies cry because of hunger, thirst, drowsiness and problems with stool. The doctor advises to start by offering a crying child to eat or drink, if it doesn’t help, try to lull the baby.

    If the crying doesn’t stop or gets worse, the baby may not be able to empty its bowels on its own. Remember when the child last had a chair, and if more than ten hours have passed, help the baby by giving him a stomach massage. You can try to press the legs to the stomach. nine0003

    For the rest, Dr. Komarovsky advises focusing exclusively on the pace of development of your child, not trying to keep up with the rapidly developing children of friends or neighbors. Komarovsky claims that severe pathologies that would prevent the baby from starting to walk and talk are not so common and are visible not at two months, but much earlier – usually even at the stage of pregnancy.

    Common problems: when to worry and how to solve them

    Prostock-studio/Shutterstock.com

    Young parents worry for various reasons, but the most common problems associated with the development of a two-month-old baby are five:

    1. The child does not even try to hold his head, constantly bowing it to the shoulder of an adult.
      Solution: lay the baby on his stomach as often as possible (but before feeding or at least half an hour after eating) – various muscle groups are perfectly strengthened in this position, including the muscles of the neck.
    2. You notice that the baby’s muscles do not develop symmetrically: more in one part of the body than in another. nine0330 Solution: carry the baby, periodically changing hands, turn from one side to the other when he sleeps.
    3. The baby has an anxious sleep, he sleeps poorly or little, is naughty when falling asleep and waking up.
      Solution: Try to set up a schedule for going to bed and waking up around the same time.
    4. Colic begins.
      Solution: give the child a tummy tuck, apply heat to the tummy, use a gas tube.
    5. Dry skin, allergic reactions on baby skin. nine0330 Solution: Reconsider bathing principles. Skin problems in babies happen due to too frequent bathing and the use of bath additives. Bathe your child three to four times a week without using any supplements, not even herbal teas

    If problems with the development or care of the baby are episodic or easily solved by the parents, there is no reason for concern. But if a specific problem is not solved in any way – for example, by the end of the second month of life, the child cannot hold his head at all or suffers from too painful colic – be sure to consult a doctor. nine0003

    How to develop your baby: tips for parents

    Follow these simple tips to help your two-month-old baby develop correctly:

    • talk a lot with your son or daughter to promote development hearing and speech;
    • play with a rattle, moving it in front of the child from side to side – both vision and the ability to concentrate are trained in this way;
    • regularly do a light massage – it will relax the baby and create a close emotional connection with the mother; nine0064
    • spend more time outdoors;
    • from educational toys at the age of two months, play mats and mobiles can be used.

The babysitting industry also has been impacted by inflation, leaving many parents questioning if a night out is worth it

The babysitting industry also has been impacted by inflation, leaving many parents questioning if a night out is worth it

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Between rent, groceries and gas, seemingly everything is more expensive, and a new survey revealed Floridians are having a hard time keeping up.

A University of South Florida survey polled 600 Floridians and found that nearly half are having a hard time paying necessary bills because of inflation.

For some families that means cutting down on eating out, shopping and date nights.

There’s one industry heavily impacted by inflation, but it won’t shock parents: babysitting.

I remember making about $10 an hour to babysit in high school. The new nation’s average rate is $20.57 an hour for one child and $23.25 an hour for two children, according to an analysis from UrbanSitter. This has many families questioning if a night out from the children is even worth it.

Mother Tina Peckham never stops moving with her two boys, 2-year-old Austin and 5-year-old Archer, so that downtime alone with her husband is cherished.

“We try to do date nights once a month — that’s the goal. We don’t have family here, so it’s finding time to get away and does it make sense financially?” Peckham said. “For dinner and a movie and not even at a crazy restaurant, just basic, is $150-200, and babysitting costs are a good half of that.”

Advance Homecare Placements owner Sharyn Edmiston says that’s a steal compared to what nanny rates are going for.

“They’re probably looking at $24 an hour at a minimum, and if we’re bringing someone in from somewhere else, it could be much higher than that. We’re seeing rates from $22 to as much as $35 an hour,” Edmiston said.

And that’s the rate for one or two children.

“When you get into three or four, we’ve done some placements recently where it was $80,000-110,000 a year,” Edmiston said.

Edmiston says that when COVID-19 hit, many parents wanted to keep their children home — which drastically raised the demand for even part-time nannies.

“And it makes it difficult from an agency perspective passing that along to a consumer and explaining that,” Edmiston said.

And while most parents only need a babysitter every once in a while, everyone is feeling the pinch.

Also, for those pet parents out there, the cost of pet sitting has also gone up. The national average for a pet sitter is around $16, and the cost per dog walk is almost $18.

Wi-Fi Nanny and Child Surveillance Camera – Rubetek 9 Smart Home0001

There is no one to leave the baby at home, we hire a nanny. But no matter how scrupulously they approached her choice, we still understand: the child remains with a stranger. What if they don’t find a common language? And if the nanny turns out to be not as conscientious as she said? Instead of supervision, will he go about his business, hit children for disobedience, feed them at the wrong time, or leave them in a dirty diaper? You read forums – this behavior is not uncommon. It turns out that another nanny should be placed above the nanny. nine0003

Among the rubetek equipment there are video cameras with different functions and capabilities. They provide stable video communication and two-way audio communication; record video on removable media, in cloud storage and broadcast online; support passive surveillance and protection modes. Therefore, of course, they are suitable for monitoring the nanny. photo

As if mom is still around

Wi-Fi camera rubetek replaces the classic video baby monitor. It has a microphone and speaker. You see what the baby is doing and hear what is happening around. If he is capricious, you can talk to him. When a child hears a familiar voice, he feels more confident and calms down faster. Instead of worrying and being nervous, you calmly go about your business. nine0003

Rubetek’s parent device is a cell phone. Mobile internet is sufficient for data transfer. Thanks to this, you can communicate with your child from anywhere in the world. It doesn’t matter if you went to work or flew to another country for a week. Despite the distances, the child always remains nearby.

The babysitter has no chance of making a mistake.

You warn the babysitter that you will be monitoring the child remotely via a Wi-Fi camera. This encourages her to take responsibility for her work. When you know that you can be looked after, you will think three times before sitting down again or drinking another cup of coffee. The camera, like a strict boss, is watching your employee. nine0003

It is almost impossible to hide something from a rubetek video camera. The Internet is temporarily gone – she records what is happening on a memory card. When you get home, you watch the recording. And if you have installed the rubetek control center, you get access to the records from anywhere in the world. “Accidental” data loss is excluded.

Another nice bonus is the ability to remotely rotate the camera (355 degrees horizontally and 90 degrees vertically). Wherever the device is located, inspect the room from any angle. If the nanny “accidentally” moved the camera – no problem, with one movement on the phone we return it back. It won’t come off. nine0003

When everyone is out and about, the house is protected

A rubetek security camera is a great alternative to setting up an alarm. She copes with the protection of the house no worse, and there is no need to pay a monthly fee.

Before going for a walk, the nanny installs a camera near the front door and activates the security mode. While it is on, the device responds to the built-in motion sensor. The door opened – the siren goes off, the video recording starts, and the photo recording of the event comes to the phone. You quickly respond to outside interference: call the police or go home yourself if you see that you can cope with the threat. Even when the thief manages to escape, he is quickly found by video (which, by the way, can be used in court). In other words, the house is protected. nine0003

The rubetek smart home allows you to communicate with your child, look after the nanny and protect your home from uninvited guests. All this with a video camera.

It might seem that this requires three different devices. But no. All options are in one camera – rubetek RV-3404.

One device instead of baby monitor, ip camera and security system. Instead of three systems, you buy one!

In terms of price, the rubetek camera is cheaper than a regular baby monitor. It turns out that you get control over the nanny and security absolutely free.

Baby rubbing head: Why is my baby rubbing ear and side of head?

Why is my baby rubbing ear and side of head?

If you’ve ever noticed your baby rubbing her ear or the side of her head, you may have wondered what the heck is going on?  Is she just scratching an itch, or could there be something else more serious?

Let’s take a closer look at some of the possible reasons why your baby might be rubbing or pulling their ear:

  1. If your baby is rubbing their ear, but does not appear to be in pain or discomfort it’s likely she is trying to soothe herself.  Babies love routines and familiar things (including their own body parts), so rubbing her ear or head might be a way for her to self-soothe and feel comforted. This can be especially true if he’s tired or feeling overwhelmed. If you think this might be the case, try offering him a pacifier or toy to help her calm down.
  2. If your baby is also crying or appears in pain this could be due to an ear infection, teething pain, or even a cold. If you think this might be the case, check for other signs of pain such as crying, fussiness, or difficulty sleeping. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and take your baby to see her pediatrician.
  3. Lastly it might be a sign that she is overtired or that their ears are blocked with ear wax. If it’s tiredness their ear pulling or ear grabbing is often accompanied by frequent yawning or clinginess.

What does an ear infection look like?

Ear infections are common in babies and young children, and can sometimes be the culprit behind why your baby is rubbing their ear.  Ear infections happen when there is fluid in the middle ear (the space behind the eardrum), and can cause pain, fever, irritability, and difficulty sleeping. If you think your baby might have an ear infection, you have a couple options:

  1. You can take your child to a pediatrician in-person.
  2. You can use a home otoscope (ear scope) to evaluate your child’s ear and see if there is any redness or bulging of the eardrum.

If you are a Blueberry member you can simply use the otoscope and Blueberry app to take a video of your child’s ear and our pediatricians will be able to quickly share back whether you baby has an ear infection, as well as next steps. We’ll also ask you questions around your child’s symptoms such as ear pulling, ear tugging, past history of ear infections, and whether there is any fluid or wax buildup.

Why are my child’s ears so waxy?

Ear wax is a natural substance produced by the body to protect the ear from dirt, dust, and other potential irritants. While a small amount of ear wax is normal, too much can build up and cause problems such as hearing loss, ear pain, and itchiness. If you notice an excessive build up, you may need to take your child to a pediatrician who can remove it.

Do babies rub ears when teething?

The simple answer is, yes! It’s not uncommon for babies to rub their ears when they are teething. This is because as the teeth start to come in, there can be pressure and pain in the gums and jaw which can radiate to the ears. If you think your baby might be teething, in addition to ear rubbing, you might also notice other signs such as increased drooling, biting or gnawing on objects, and irritability. If you’re curious about how evaluate teething vs an ear infection you can find a detailed breakdown in our article “Baby Ear Infection vs Teething – Everything You Need To Know!”.

Should I be worried about a baby pulling on ear?

If you’ve ever noticed your baby rubbing their ear and side of head, ear tugging, or ear pulling you are not alone. It’s actually a pretty common thing for babies to do. While there are a few different possible explanations, the most likely ones are that she’s either trying to relieve some pain or discomfort, or that she’s trying to soothe herself. If your baby is crying, running a fever, or seems to be experiencing ear pain, it’s always best to consult with your child’s pediatrician.

Have questions about ear tugging, ear pulling, or a possible ear infection? You can contact a Blueberry pediatrician 24/7, day or night! The best part? An entire year of Blueberry membership costs less than the typical copay of a single urgent care visit!

My Baby Scratches Their Head a Lot: Should I Be Concerned?

  • It’s normal for babies to scratch their heads. It’s a natural reflex and a signal that an area on their body needs attention.
  • It’s never too early to start a skin care regimen for your baby. Use gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers for your baby’s skin.
  • Save baby mittens for sleep time. Your little one needs free hands to explore and develop his sensory system.
  • If your baby’s constant scratching causes skin irritation to spread, consult his pediatrician.

Your baby’s perfect head is covered in scratch marks. Maybe scratching his head has become a habit. If this sounds familiar, you may be doing a bit of head-scratching of your own trying to figure out why your baby scratches his head

In many young babies, actual scratches on the head and face are likely accidental and due to uncontrolled hand movements. These types of scratches are generally not a big concern beyond making sure they don’t get infected. But if it seems like your baby is deliberately scratching because they’re itchy then you’ll want to address the problem.

Common reasons for babies to scratch include overwashing, dryness, and allergies. Another reason might be eczema. If you notice constant scratching, keep a record of it. You may want to include information about your baby’s diet, clothing material, detergent brand, and anything else you put on their skin.

Keep in mind that your baby’s skin is an amazing organ. It constantly sheds, renews, and makes up the beautiful little human that’s before you. His built-in reflex that tells him to scratch an itch is also a thing to appreciate. Think of it as a method of communication to you—his body needs attention somewhere.

With a bit of close observation, recordkeeping, and patience, your baby’s scratching can be addressed and remedied.

Is It Normal for a Baby to Scratch Their Head?

When there’s an itch, can you resist scratching it? Babies are no different. It’s normal for babies to scratch their heads.

Babies endure a multitude of skin issues. Their tender skin constantly sheds and adjusts to elements outside the womb.

Some common culprits that cause babies to scratch their head include:

  • Too-frequent bathing. Your well-intentioned attempt to keep your baby squeaky clean with frequent baths may be removing the natural oils from his skin and causing dryness.
  • Harsh chemicals in baby shampoo. If your baby has sensitive skin, these can also lead to an itchy scalp.
  • Dryness. Baby skin is susceptible to moisture loss, which can cause dryness. Dryness can be uncomfortable and itchy for your baby.
  • Eczema. The onset of eczema usually occurs before the age of one. Eczema most commonly appears in babies as a dry, scaly rash on the cheeks, trunk, scalp, hands, or feet.
  • Cradle Cap. Cradle cap is a rash that can form on the scalp and face. It’s identified by greasy, scaly patches and tends to disappear between 6 months and one year of age. Keep in mind, however, that cradle cap is not usually itchy, so it’s unlikely to be a culprit for scratching.
  • Allergies. If your baby is allergic to a type of food or material, skin irritation may appear on his head.

Your Baby Scratches the Back of Their Head

If you notice your baby scratching the back of his head, he may just be tending to an itch that’s causing him discomfort. Your baby may also be tired and indicating that it’s time for a nap. Scratching the back of his head can serve as a self-soothing method.

Your Baby Scratches Their Face

A newborn baby’s startle reflex is meant to protect him by quickly throwing out his arms and legs. With very little control of his hands, your baby may accidentally scratch himself. The skin on your baby’s face, unfortunately, might take the brunt of it.

Additionally, as your baby embarks on some face exploration, he is engaged in healthy development behavior. Just bear in mind that he may conclude his exploration with an accidental scratch on his face.

Your Baby Scratches Their Head at Night

Babies with eczema tend to scratch more often at night. This is likely because a drop in body temperature at night can cause skin to become itchier. If your baby scratches his head at night, it’s likely his scratching disturbs much-needed sleep—for everyone.

Here are some tips for your baby to scratch less and get a good night’s rest:

  • Treat your baby to a soothing bath that includes skin-friendly oatmeal and calendula. Avoid bubble products as they can irritate the skin.
  • Pat your baby’s skin dry with a soft towel.
  • Moisturize your baby with a fragrance-free cream as soon as he’s out of the water to lock in moisture.
  • Dress your baby in comfortable pajamas made from 100% cotton or linen. Use hypoallergenic blankets and sheets for his bed. Avoid materials like polyester and wool, which can cause itchy skin.
  • Use a humidifier if the weather is dry.
  • Keep your baby’s room at a comfortable, cool temperature. Sweat may cause itchiness, too.
  • Baby nails are notorious for being razor-sharp. Using an emery board, file your baby’s nails—including those sharp corners.
  • If your baby’s hands make their way to his little head while he’s asleep, it’s less likely he’ll wake up or hurt himself by scratching his head with sharp nails.
  • Place scratch mittens over your baby’s hands. Mittens may not be necessary, though, if you keep your baby’s nails trimmed and filed.

Your Baby Scratches Their Head When Upset

Besides crying and turning red, babies have other devices to show that they’re upset. Some babies scratch their head to demonstrate unhappiness.

Your baby might have jerky movements when he’s upset, increasing the likeliness that he’ll scratch his head more furiously. This may cause worry as your baby navigates the often tricky emotional development. Stress and anxiety trigger itching, making your child’s emotions and physical discomfort even more upsetting.

Remain patient and gently guide your baby’s hands away from his head. Remove your baby from as much stimulation as possible by going to a quiet room where he can calm down. Keep track of events and activities that tend to upset him and avoid those.

Your Baby is Rubbing Their Head

Some babies rub their heads to self-soothe. If your baby is approaching naptime, he might scratch his head due to tiredness. Overstimulation may also cause your baby to rub his head.

Head rubbing might be accompanied by tugging at his ears and drooling if your little one is starting to get new teeth.

How Can I Stop My Baby from Scratching Their Head?

Here are some ways to prevent your baby from scratching his head:

  • Retain moisture in your baby’s skin by using a fragrance-free moisturizing cream. Apply generously throughout the day. Avoid lotions as they tend to contain alcohol.
  • Keep his nails trimmed and filed.
  • Use mild soap and detergents.
  • Gently brush your baby’s hair to remove dry flakes.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Keeping your baby’s skin moisturized and using over-the-counter treatments may keep itching at bay. If your baby’s scratching persists, worsens, or other symptoms appear, consult with their doctor.

Here are other signs you may need to visit the doctor:

  • There is no improvement with over-the-counter treatments.
  • Prescribed medication stops working.
  • Your baby develops a rash, or skin starts to ooze, bleed, develops sores or blisters, or looks swollen—it might be infected.
  • There are flat red spots on the skin.
  • Your baby scratches multiple areas.
  • A fever accompanies scratching.
  • If your baby seems intensely uncomfortable or is unable to stop scratching
  • If anyone in the household is known to be exposed to or diagnosed with scabies, lice, chickenpox, herpes simplex (cold sores), or other skin infections.

FAQs

What are the symptoms of eczema?

Your baby may have eczema if you see these signs:

  • Circular red patches
  • Dry, scaly skin
  • Skin appears thick and leathery
  • Skin is red and itchy
  • When scratched, the area oozes
  • On infants, patches are prominent on cheeks, forehead, and scalp

How do you treat a scratch on your baby’s face?

Small scratches heal quickly (within a matter of days) and usually don’t require bandages. If the scratch is deep, you can treat the scratch with these steps:

  • Clean the scratch gently but thoroughly. Use a wipe or a cloth instead of a cotton ball—the fluff can stick to the wound.
  • Pat the area dry.
  • Apply a moisturizer or antiseptic cream.
  • If you use a bandage, check it often. Be sure it’s not loose or grubby. Avoid using bandages at night unless the area is inaccessible to your baby. For example, a bandaid under zip-up jammies is okay; a bandaid on their finger or face is not because it can come off and pose a choking hazard.

What if my baby has a cold sore?

Herpes simplex (cold sores) can be really dangerous for babies, especially those under 6 months. These blisters (usually accompanied by fever) can be itchy, too, and they require evaluation by a pediatrician ASAP. To help prevent cold sores, caution caregivers (and anyone else!) not to kiss your baby if that person has a cold sore.

“My Baby Will Only Sleep on Me! Help” – Tips & Advice

Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019

Are you struggling to get your baby to sleep anywhere other than on you? Yes, we’ve all had that problem. While it’s nice to have them snuggle it can be inconvenient. We spoke to sleep consultant, Hadley Seward from Bonne Nuit Baby who let us know just what to do.

If you’re like many new mums, you may love nothing more than snuggling up with your newborn while she naps. It’s such a great feeling… until, little by little, you realise your to-do list has become a to-do book and the idea of eating a meal with both hands seems like an unattainable dream. In my case, it took about 8 weeks to get to this point. My daughter slept in her bassinet overnight but absolutely refused to nap anywhere other than in the baby carrier. While I initially loved the feeling of her cozied up next to me, I began to have serious back problems and decided this couldn’t be our long-term plan for naps. If you’re in the same boat, here are some tips that I used to help my newborn begin to nap in her bassinet:

Watch your awake windows. In order to set up your baby for success, aim to keep her awake windows between naps short. Most newborns can’t comfortably stay awake longer than 45-60 minutes without becoming overtired. Watch for tired signs and get her down quickly thereafter.

Reassess your baby’s sleep environment. Around 7-8 weeks, babies become more sensitive to light and dark. Use this to your benefit and create a very dark, quiet sleep environment for her.Bonus points for blackout curtains, a white noise machine and organic sleepsuits that are gentle to baby’s delicate skin.

Start with baby steps. Every day, your goal should be to try one nap in the bassinet or cot. The first nap of the day is usually the best bet. Most newborns around 7-8 weeks will be ready for their first nap about an hour after they woke up.

Replace sleep associations. Your baby may not be ready to fall asleep independently right off the bat — that’s okay! If your goal is to move away from a big sleep association (like nursing to sleep or napping on mum/in the baby carrier), try introducing new sleep associations that will be easier to transition away from. For example, place your baby in the cot and bounce it (to create motion) while placing your hand gently on her chest (to mimic the sensation of being next to you). The goal is to start with some form of intervention and progressively lessen it as your infant adjusts.

Slow and steady wins the race. The first time you try this, your baby may hate it and waste no time in letting you know! Even if Day 1 is an utter failure, tomorrow is another day. Keep trying your chosen technique, giving your baby an opportunity to fall asleep. She can do this!

Practice makes perfect. Your baby will need some consistent practice in order to reliably fall (and stay asleep) in his new sleep space. Start with one nap per day, then two, and work your way towards the goal of most naps in the cot.

Learning to fall asleep in a new sleep environment is a big deal. The first time she succeeds is a huge victory, even if she only snoozes for 5-10 minutes. Give her a big cuddle and congratulate her on a job well done. And give yourself a pat on the back too, because YOU help to make this happen!

What is the safest sleep solution for my baby with reflux?

Anthony Porto, MD, MPH, FAAP

Answer

By: Anthony Porto, MD, MPH, FAAP

Naturally, you want to do whatever you can to keep your baby safe. And if your baby is one of the many who have reflux―also called
gastroesophageal reflux (GER)―there are a fair share of myths and misconceptions out there when it comes to
sleeping positions.

Here are three sleep safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for babies with reflux:

Note: Many of the factors that contribute to GER in infancy are part of typical growth and development―including a short esophagus in newborns that will grow as the baby does, along with a muscle at the bottom that is also relatively short and not as strong as it will be later in life. GER typically starts at 2-3 weeks of age and peaks at 4-5 months in full term infants. GER typically gets much better after 6 months once a baby learns to sit up; the esophagus gets longer and the lower esophageal sphincter functions properly.

1. Back to sleep―even with reflux!

Though parents are often concerned that their baby may vomit and choke while sleeping on their back, it is a total myth! Babies automatically cough up or swallow fluid that they spit up or vomit because of the gag reflex, that naturally prevents choking from happening. There is no evidence that healthy babies placed on their backs are more likely to have serious or fatal choking episodes than those placed on their stomachs. But there
is strong evidence that babies placed on their stomachs are at higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Take the spitting over the SIDS!

Back sleeping is the best way to reduce the risk of SIDS and is the recommended position until babies can roll over fully on their own―even for babies with reflux.

2. Transfer a sleeping baby to a firm, flat safe sleep surface when not traveling.

If baby falls asleep while riding in his
car seat―which often happens―the AAP recommends transferring him out of the seat when you reach your destination and placing him on his back in a crib, bassinette or play yard with a firm, flat mattress, free from soft bedding, including pillows or blankets, toys and bumpers.

Car seats and other sitting devices, like swings or reclined bouncy seats, are not safe sleeping environments; neither are sleep positioners or nests―a mat with raised supports or pillows surrounding it, frequently resembling a raft. These products are unregulated and there are no safety standards that apply to them. The AAP does not recommend sleep positioners or nests, as their safety has not been well researched. In addition, there is evidence that a semi-inclined position can make a baby’s reflux worse.

Placing your baby in a semi-inclined position does not make reflux better.

In 2019, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Fisher-Price issued a recall of 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play infant sleepers following reports of over 30 infant deaths. Death was associated with infants turning over while sleeping in these inclined sleepers leading to an increased risk of suffocation and strangulation.

The AAP does not recommend letting infants sleep in inclined products like the Rock ‘n Play that require restraining a baby. AAP policy calls for infants to sleep on their back, on a separate, flat and firm sleep surface without any bumpers, bedding or stuffed toys.

3. Gadgets are not recommended.

There are many gadgets that are marketed for treating reflux. Wedges and sleep positioners are not needed and although these are sometimes marketed to reduce the risk of SIDS, research is lacking.

Avoid devices designed to maintain head elevation in the crib.

Elevating the head of a baby’s crib is not effective in reducing GER. It’s also not safe as it increases the risk of the baby rolling to the foot of the bed or into a position that may cause serious of deadly breathing problems.

This recommendation is supported by the AAP, the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

So with sleep positioners and gadgets out, what’s a parent of a baby with reflux to do?

Reflux will end for most babies. As difficult as it can be, wait it out. Most babies outgrow the symptoms. We know that by 4 months of age, the great majority of babies are spitting up. By 6 months, that dramatically drops off because they’re sitting up on their own.

If you have any concerns about your baby with reflux, it is always best to talk with your pediatrician and come up with a plan together for best sleep practices.

How to wean sleep on the breast

There is an opinion that breastfeeding can disrupt a child’s healthy sleep. Let’s figure it out, shall we?

Breastfeeding is not just about feeding and nourishing your baby. Breastfeeding is a strong bond between mother and child. The first year of life is the busiest. The kid is going through crises, growth spurts, teething, new emotions and impressions, learning to sit down, crawl, walk. During this time, the child’s body experiences enormous emotional and physical stress. It is on the chest that the baby calms down, feels safe and secure. Therefore, in a certain period, he wakes up much more often and requires his mother’s breast.
Libo is only able to fall asleep while feeding.

As a result, mothers often get tired of lack of sleep, the inability to delegate the laying down of the child to relatives. And the thought comes to stop breastfeeding. But do not rush, it is enough to wean the child from falling asleep with the breast and life will become much easier.

It should be understood that upon closer examination, the child does not ask for the breast itself, he asks for help and support from his mother. This is not to say that breastfeeding negatively affects sleep. It’s all about the correct, consistent and reasonable approach to a child’s sleep. Breastfeeding is a fairly strong association of the child, which he strongly associates with subsequent sleep. The main task is to separate food and sleep, but at the same time maintain full breastfeeding.

What happens when a baby falls asleep only when feeding?

Baby’s sleep consists of separate cycles, lasting about 40-50 minutes. After each cycle, the child wakes up to assess the situation. It would be ideal if she remained the same. Therefore, if a child falls asleep with a breast, then after waking up, not finding the same conditions, he starts crying and demands to return them back.

So how do you stop your baby from falling asleep while feeding?

  1. Let your little one enjoy your presence during the day . Be there, be involved in active and quiet waking hours.
  2. During the day, show your baby that mother can support not only breastfeeding, but also in other ways . For example, use tactile and vocal contact with the child.
  3. Show that peace of mind for a child is not a breast, but the mother herself with her help.
  4. Try to delegate bedtime with your husband or grandmother . the fact is that the baby knows your smells, knows that you have breasts, so it may insistently require the usual way of laying from you, while not from another relative. It may not be easy at first. If the child has a daily rhythm and bedtime rituals, then the adaptation process will go much faster.
  5. Some babies do not sleep on the breast . Your task is to support his habit. Put him in the crib before he falls asleep.
  6. Teach how to fall asleep on your own . As a result, after the end of the cycle, the baby will wake up, but will be able to fall asleep on his own. It will be enough for you to say a mantra for sleep (a phrase signaling sleep).
  7. Expand your list of sleep associations for your child . To do this, you can use hissing or warming up vowels, stroking, squeezing a hand or foot rhythmically, clapping. You can choose the place where your baby will be most pleasant to touch.
    Come to the courses “ PASSPORT of sleep ” and “ BABY’S DREAM. MAMA IN RESOURCE “. We give effective methods for improving sleep, remove resistance, work with the emotional state of the mother. If you think that your situation requires an individual approach, write to us, we will select the best package of services with daily support from a consultant.
  8. If the mother is not afraid of association with the nipple, then offer it instead of the breast . The dummy is not a strong association and can be gradually weaned from it as well.
    Many modern mothers choose to co-sleep with their baby. This moment must be taken into account if the mother decides to separate breastfeeding and sleep, to wean from falling asleep with the breast.

Frequent night feedings can be not only an association with falling asleep, but also a completely physiological need for a child. To begin with, it is necessary to distinguish food awakenings from non-food ones. With a normal feeling of hunger, the baby will eat fully, that is, you will hear characteristic sips, which on average last from 5 to 10 minutes.

During a non-food awakening, the baby may suckle for a few seconds, and then only keep the breast in the mouth, periodically sucking. If you have determined that at night the child wakes up precisely for food, then pay attention to the number of calories consumed during the day. The solution may be to increase the number of attachments to the breast during the day or to review the diet in case of introduction of complementary foods. Also try to feed your baby 30 minutes before bedtime. To maintain normal lactation, morning feedings should not be neglected, from 4 to 8 in the morning, when milk production is especially intense.

Before weaning the child to fall asleep only on the chest, check the following points, only then proceed to the learning process:

  • The baby must be healthy.
  • The mother is lactating and the child is gaining weight.
  • The baby has a daily rhythm. Correctly organized calm and active wakefulness.
  • Do not wean the child from anything else during this period. It is better to gradually than the baby will experience even more severe stress.
  • Remember that breastfeeding is only a strong sleep association, there is nothing wrong with it . The main thing is to understand the state of mother and child. If, with this method of falling asleep, all participants in the process feel satisfied, the mother is in the resource, the baby is healthy, then this is not a problem, but one of the ways to organize the process of feeding and sleeping.

    In the event that something does not suit you, then be patient. All children are different, everyone needs different time for adaptation and weaning. The main thing is to be tolerant, confident and consistent. Children easily read our state.

    Does your child fall asleep only with his mother when feeding? Weaned? Share in the comments below.

    The science of sleep: 6 ways to teach your child to fall asleep (without screaming and motion sickness)

    Parents go to great lengths to calm a crying child and make him fall asleep. Someone lives with a baby in their arms, and someone drives him in a car at night, because this is the only way he falls asleep. Tatyana Meyer offers six rules that work.

    Here I am blogging about family sleep, not only here on Mel but also on other platforms. It doesn’t matter what a specific post will be about — in the comments, they will most often ask how to stop rocking and, in general, how to put a child to sleep. Then I boringly (actually with a claim to sarcasm and irony) begin to explain that you can just put a child to sleep with a tranquilizer, but since this method is not suitable for humanists and teachers, then you need to act systematically.

    There are funny videos on the Internet in which violent babies are instantly put to sleep by swiping a tissue over their face or massaging their ears. Magic, and nothing more. I do not even rule out that such a trick can affect some children at the right time. But in general, there is nowhere to go, you need to build a calm family dream from many bricks. I will talk about my “6 R” – the components of restful sleep.

    1. Mode

    At each age, the child has a set time for wakefulness and the total number of hours of sleep per day that he needs to sleep. With children up to a year and a half, we are not talking about a mode tied to a clock, but rather about the rhythm of sleep and wakefulness, observing which we do not overwork the baby, and then he does not overwork us.

    We put newborns to bed often, often and let them sleep as much as they want, practically until they wake up to eat. During the first year, this picture will change a lot and by the end of it, the baby will have one or two maiden dreams, with a total duration of two to three hours, can you imagine the difference?

    Here are the wakefulness norms for different ages:

    Newborn — 50-60 min.

    1 month 1 hour – 1 hour 15 minutes

    2 months – 1 hour 15 minutes — 1 hour 20 minutes

    3 months – 1 hour 20 minutes — 1 hour 35 minutes

    4 months – 1 hour 45 minutes — 2 hours

    5 months — 2 hours — 2 hours 15 minutes

    6 months – 2 hours 15 minutes — 2 hours 30 minutes

    6. 5-7 months – 2 hours 45 minutes — 3 hours

    8-10 months – 3-4 hours

    11-12 months – 3 hours 30 minutes — 4 hours 30 minutes

    13-15 months – 3-4 hours (at 2 DC), 5 hours (at 1 DC)

    16 months – 3 years – 5-6 hours

    4 years – 6 hours (with DS)

    2. Ritual

    No, we are not talking about dances with a tambourine and sacrifice to the god of sleep! A ritual is a constant, repeating chain of actions that helps the child understand that it is time for sleep. It sets you up for relaxation, satisfies the need for hugs, love, tactile contact. We need a ritual to mark the time of bedtime, so that the child only has to close his eyes and fall asleep. This sequence of actions is repeated for all dreams, although for daytime sleep the ritual may be shorter (and even different from the night ritual), and carried out only once, so the child will soon get used to the fact that after doing “one-two-three” – It’s time for sleep.

    The ritual should be such that it can be repeated by any adult who puts the child to bed (mom, dad, grandmother, nanny) and should not be tied to a place. This is how he will help put the child to sleep at a party, vacation or in the country.

    3. Intelligent sleep associations

    Sleep associations are the conditions in which the baby is accustomed to falling asleep, including the environment and actions of the parents. They are necessary both for a calm going to sleep and at the moments of awakening between sleep cycles.

    The sleep cycle per year is 40-50 minutes, in two years it is about 1.5 hours, hence the frequent awakenings that exhaust children and parents. If the conditions in which the child woke up are identical to those that helped him fall asleep initially, then returning back to sleep will be much easier.

    There are strong and weak associations. The strong ones work better, but the dependence on them is much higher.

    Strong associations for falling asleep : sucking (breast or nipple), motion sickness (in a wheelchair, on arms, on a fitball), sleeping on the move, eating and drinking, presence and intervention of an adult.

    Weak : sleepy sounds (white noise), sleepy place (bed, cradle), sleepy objects (toy, blanket), sleepy clothes (swaddling, pajamas, sleeping bag), sleepy environment (room, temperature, lighting), sleeping posture.

    If the child was rocked to sleep, then when he wakes up between cycles, he will again need rocking. For the same reason, babies often sleep “with their breasts in their mouths”, their sleep cycle is very short, their sleep is shallow, support in the form of a strong association is constantly needed. A smart choice in this case will save parents from hourly jumps on a fitball or having to intervene every 40 minutes.

    4. Separation of food and sleep

    Well, in principle, this is again about reasonableness, if a child falls asleep on his chest, and there is still no skill of falling asleep on his own, then at each end of the cycle (and a year, I remind you, this is 40 minutes) again you will need breasts, so it is better to set up the sleep-eat-play sequence rather than the sleep-play-eat sequence.

    How to choose infant drool bibs and baby mealtime bibs

    When shopping for baby clothing accessories, expecting parents are overwhelmed by selections of infant socks, baby mittens, headbands, bibs, burp clothes, blankets, and newborn hats.   They often wonder “what are the essential items that my baby really needs?”  These new parents are probably told “baby bibs are important and is a must” but often times it wasn’t until they actually reached the throes of parenthood that they realize just how necessary bibs are.  Babies (or even toddlers) can easily go through several bibs a day, and different activities may require a specific type of bib.  So there really isn’t a “best baby bibs” out there that would serve all purposes.  Here we are going to go through the two major categories of bibs, their functions, shapes, and different materials that are used to make the bibs. Hopefully this will help new parents picking out the ideal bibs for their needs. One thing important we must remind everyone again is “buy quality rather than quantity”.

    Bibs for teething or drooling

    All babies drool.  This is because their oral muscles used to control their drool may not be fully developed until they are 2 years old. The excess drool helps kids to digest food when they start eating solid food.  When they begin teething, drooling intensifies and they may go through couple of bibs in a day.  So it is a good idea to keep a few bibs at home or in the diaper bags.  A drool bib can sop up the spit to keep babies’ clothes getting soaked (and potentially irritating the skin underneath).  It can also be handy to wipe off dribble around their mouth, which can also cause a skin rash.

    The size

    Baby drool bibs (or some refer them as baby teething bibs) are smaller than feeding-time bibs. The main purpose is to keep the front part of babies’ clothes dry, so basically the bibs size should be just large enough to cover the neck to upper chest part.  You want to make sure they fit well around your baby’s neck and leave no or very little gap so drool doesn’t go down their neck and eventually get to their body.

    The fabrics

    You want to make sure these bibs are made of absorbent fabrics that also wash easily and last well (you might be washing them daily). Since at this stage, baby’s skin is still delicate, so you want to pick out something that’s soft. Organic cotton baby bibs are a good choice. You can also consider sustainable fabrics such as azlon from soy and rayon from bamboo, these fabrics are softer than cotton and are environmental friendly. Most of drool bibs are double-layered, there are some waterproof baby bibs in the market which has a plastic or polyester lining between the layers.  But we think the regular double layer bibs will do the job.

    The fit and style

    Cloth bibs : Basically a round piece of fabric with a neck opening using either snaps or Velcro to secure itself on baby’s neck. Simple, machine-washable bibs made from soft, absorbent fabrics.

    Bandana bibs :  When you want a bit more style, baby bandana bibs is an option.  They are a good choice for drooly toddlers, since the bandana style looks less babyish. One thing to note is that a bandana bib is a bit more difficult to take off than regular-shaped baby bibs, the positive side is that it will stay on better when your child tries to pull it off, but not so cool when you have a million things to accomplish and trying to remove the bib.

    Flower shape bibs Some brands has taken a step further and modified the cloth bibs and turn them into a flower petals shape drool bibs. Although some may consider these to be more of a baby bibs for girls, but we think they are gender neutral and ideal for those that simply want to add a bit of style on top of the traditional shaped bibs.

    Bibs for mealtime

    Babies and toddlers are known to create a mess when they eat.  So when it comes to keeping formula or food off your baby or toddler’s outfit, any bib is better than nothing. Especially when your baby begins to self-feed, you will find a mealtime bib is important.

    The size

    Mealtime bibs are typically larger than drool bibs. They offer wider coverage to protect your baby’s clothes and skin from mealtime messes. Ideally, a mealtime bib should at least cover your baby’s entire chest area. If your kids tend to make a real mess, you will find large baby bibs that cover their stomach and arms are a plus.

    The fabrics

    Mealtime bibs are usually made of waterproof or almost waterproof fabrics. Silicone and plastic are the most common materials used for mealtime bibs. This makes them easy to wipe off or clean after each meal and ready to go on the next. At the end of the day, a quick hand-wash or toss them in the washer and air dry.

    Silicone bibs are soft, flexible and waterproof. They can also be wiped clean after mealtime. Make sure you select food-grade silicone, which ensure safety especially for younger children.

    Plastic bibs are thinner than silicone bibs but are also waterproof that can be wiped clean. Some have pockets for crumbs, but they don’t always catch as much as silicone bibs. Some options are also big enough to cover a child’s shoulders or lap.

    Disposable bibs are single-use made with thin plastic, an option that can be helpful for meals-on-the-go or when you’re traveling.

    The fit and style

    Feeding-time bibs come in various styles. The first is what we call large baby bibs. They are simply a larger sized traditional drool bibs that covers baby’s whole chest area. The second is the scoop bib. It looks like a traditional bib but with a lip or pocket at the bottom. This pouch catches food, drool, and other debris during mealtime.  The third is smock-style bibs which is a long-sleeved bib that offers full coverage. These bibs are open-back long-sleeved shirts that you can put on and take off for a meal. This added coverage keeps even the messiest baby food free. There are short-sleeved option baby smocks if you feel it would be more comfortable for your baby or toddler. One drawback is that these bibs are more size-specific, your little one may outgrow their pair of smock bibs sooner than you think.

    Bibs for newborns

    We also came across some new parents asking what about bibs for the newborns?  A bib can keep dribbled breast-milk or formula off of your little one’s clothes during feeding and also help sop up the inevitable spit-up that comes every now and then.   We recommend using drool bibs (as they are smaller) made with either sustainable fabrics like soy fabric or organic cotton as they tend to be softer and less irritating to infants’ delicate skin.  Using snap bibs is better than Velcro as there’s a chance Velcro might scratch your baby.

    Other factors to consider

    Whether you’re shopping for baby drool bibs or mealtime bibs, besides fit and comfort, colors and patterns is another factor to consider.  Solid colors are an easy option as they would match up to outfits more readily (yes, your baby want to remain stylish even while drooling).  If you like patterns, pick bold and loud patterns, they hide stains better. If you are buying baby gifts, an embroidered baby bib or a monogrammed bib may be a good option to show off personalization!

    Genetic analysis – DNA tests on saliva

    Genetic analysis of saliva

    Absolutely all hereditary information about a person and the program of his development is stored in a chain of genes, which can be studied today by analyzing saliva for genetics.

    Fluid produced by salivary glands like blood, hair, nails or urine contains the same set of genes and is excellent for this type of research. Knowing your genetic code enables a person to make his life better and longer. nine0005

    DNA – BABY TEST

    DNA – BABY TEST PARENTS NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THEIR CHILD!

    The test aims to identify problems in a child from an early age. It is done once in a lifetime, our DNA does not change with age and it can be done from 2 months. The baby test examines 10 genes. In fact, there are many more genes, but the most important ones that can cause pathologies are no more than 50. The rest are dormant and do not affect the body. The test will help you understand what your child needs for full development and good health. nine0106 ⠀
    Unlike traditional advice, DNA test recommendations take into account:

    • Individual need for nutrients and vitamins;
    • Features of eating behavior and habits;
    • Having intolerance to gluten and lactose and other foods to which allergies may occur and further complications of underweight or childhood obesity;
    • Risk of diseases associated with malnutrition;
    • Innate ability for sports – this will help determine which sports sections are optimal
    • Physical activities acceptable for a child i. e. will be optimal, suitable for its bodily functions.

    Ways of HIV transmission – How to protect yourself? — HIV/AIDS: United Nations Children’s Fund

    Ways of HIV transmission

    HIV is transmitted by the transfer of body fluids containing the immunodeficiency virus from one person to another.

    Immunodeficiency virus is present in the following body fluids: blood, semen and pre-ejaculatory secretions, vaginal secretions and breast milk. This virus is also found in saliva, but according to experts, its concentration is too low to cause disease. nine0005

    Meeting at a jazz club in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Photo by UNICEF. It follows that kissing, even deep kissing with an open mouth, does not carry any risk. It is also impossible to get HIV through ordinary touch, such as shaking hands. Moreover, it is impossible to catch HIV from touching something that an HIV-infected person has already touched. HIV is also impossible to catch by air. Biological fluids containing the immunodeficiency virus enter the human body only through damage to the tissues / skin. nine0005

    Sex

    Unprotected penetrative sex is the most common way for bodily fluids to pass from one body to another, which can spread the virus. “Unprotected” means sex without a condom, “penetrative” means that during intercourse the penis penetrates or enters the vagina or anus. In this case, HIV-infected semen, vaginal fluid, or blood from one person can enter the body of another person through tiny cuts or wounds in the vagina, anus, or penis. These cuts or wounds may be so small that they cannot be seen. nine0005

    Having another sexually transmitted disease increases the likelihood of contracting HIV because venereal diseases cause damage to the tissues of the genital organs, facilitating the entry of infected blood into the circulatory system. Sexually transmitted diseases can also cause serious health problems. The approach to and perception of parenting has evolved in recent years. The modern parent sees his or her role in said capacity not as yet another aspect of their lives, but rather as the central axis of life around which everything else, from work to friendships to hobbies, must be balanced. By in large, this is a positive shift, as children deserve the best effort their parents have to make, and certainly so in those early years. And when a parent is trying to be the best mother or father they can be, as a fringe benefit they are likely also being the best person they can be overall; this spills over into diet, attitude, activities, and so forth. And then you have some people who see parenthood as a crisis. Oh well.

    Regardless of how parenthood will affect you (or how adding a second or third or eighth child to the brood will affect the family), I think we can all agree that when a grown man gets an excuse to cut loose, it’s time to party. Baby showers are occasionally co-ed these days, but seldom are they male-centric, and logically so: the female has a physical role in the child bearing and rearing process that even the most devoted father can’t take on, so much of the paraphernalia (i.e. gifts) involved at a baby shower skews female.

    Related: Great Gifts for the Father

    Thus we have the Man Shower, AKA the Dadchelor Party, AKA the Keg Party (maybe not that one). Whatever name you choose, this event is an excuse for a man and his crew to… well… drink a lot. But thematically and in celebration of a damn good cause.

    These Guys Know How To Party

    In my circle, the Dadchelor Party goes by the name Man Storm. (To parse that for you, it’s Man instead of Baby, and Storm instead of Shower. Clever, no? I can’t take credit.) A Man Storm has little to do with gifts, and more to do with experience. It’s a celebration recognizing that a father to-be has a lot of responsibility headed his way, and it’s an excuse for said gentleman to be anything but responsible for at least a day (but ideally a weekend).

    First I’ll tell you of my own Man Storm, then I’ll share some tried-and-true ideas for making your own event — or the Dadchelor Party you plan for a bro — epic enough to tide you over for a year or 18. (Because parenting stops the moment they turn 18, right?)

    It began with a trip to Golden Road Brewery, a spot with beer aplenty, as well as fine burgers and lot of large, heavy wooden furniture, just the kind I like. Beer was consumed. Burgers were eaten. Man things were spoken of.

    Next the crew and I piled into a limousine and traveled south from Los Angeles all the way to Buena Park, where we attended the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, where more beer (and specialty cocktails served in large novelty mugs) and more meatstuffs were consumed.

    Also we yelled at our knight a lot. As I recall, we wasn’t the finest jouster of the evening and, not feeling particularly reserved, I let him know this fact in no uncertain terms. (And for the record, I’m sorry, Green Knight — it was nothing personal, I just got tired of seeing you not defeat that awful Orange Knight, so I used unkind words. Also why don’t you learn how to use a goddamned sword?)

    Our trusty limousine brought us back to my (then) hometown of Glendale, CA, where we were deposited at a pool hall. After many gloriously bad games of billiards, I elected to skip a taxi and stroll the mile or so back to my house to collect my thoughts (and have a cigar). There, I encountered my wife dealing with some morning sickness (which often comes in the middle of the night or the early afternoon or whenever the hell it wants, FYI), so I helped her through some nausea while feeling perhaps not great myself, but while certainly appreciating the fine group of men with whom I’d shared many reflections on fatherhood and life in general, and with whom I’d shared way too many drinks.

    Now, as for how to plan a Man Shower party, all you really need to know is how much time is available, and what the dad to-be likes to do. And also what he likes to drink, as unless he is a teetotaler, that’s a big part of this process, and you might as well own it.

    Vegas, baby: If you and the guys have an overnight or weekend free, then by all means hit up Las Vegas or Atlantic City and have a blast; just make sure you reserve plenty of time to be together, as trips to those and similar cities often see the group going in different directions. Make sure to find low limit tables where you can all sit together and focus on talking more than money. I’ve always loved hanging out in the sports book area, where you can often get a table, place small, low stress bets on horse races all around the world, and enjoy your friends’ company at leisure. But you do your thing; just keep in mind that disparate financial situations might make this type of trip a burden for some.

    Hiking/Camping: There’s no better way to enjoy the company of your friends than with nothing to distract you save for the stunning beauty of nature. Do a day hike if time is tight and booze isn’t that important to your crew. Car camp and pass the brews if that’s more your speed. Or go ahead and climb Mt. Rainier if you want enjoy an existential crisis or two and feel more lactic acid in your quads than you knew possible. Or just go fishing.

    A Good Ol’ Party: More often that not, your Dachelor Party is going to be a single evening event, AKA… um… a party. So make it awesome. The menu and the beverage selection is up to you (if you’re having trouble there, just go with BBQ and beer, dude), but here are some fine ideas for Man Shower party games — I’ve linked to the sources, and can’t take credit for all of these fine ideas. I’m here to share, sir, I’m here for you.

    Blindfolded Diapering: FYI, the early years of a child’s life involve a lot of diapers. The better you get at changing a diaper, the better your life is going to be. And while diapers aren’t really that big of a deal, changing them isn’t exactly fun. Unless you’re changing the diaper of a doll while you’re wearing a blindfold and also you’re drunk. No need to explain this in greater detail, I’ll wager.

    Labor Face vs. Orgasm Face: Pretty simple, but lots of fun (and maybe a bit disturbing). Compile a sheet with close-up images of women’s faces who are either in the throes of ecstasy or the pains of labor. The man who makes the game sheets has an interesting hour or so ahead of him; the players will enjoy the game, and will find it harder than expected to choose correctly. Credit

    A Bottle of Beer: It’s a scientifically proven fact that, given the choice between drinking beer out of a tarnished old tuba or not drinking beer at all, a man will immediately begin to guzzle suds from the corroded brass instrument. This also holds true when beer is served in a baby bottle. Make that the beverage conveyance of the evening, or set up a race even to see who can chug their baby bottle of beer the fastest. The winner gets another beer!

    Balloon Shoe Tie: Put yourself in the pregnant lady’s shoes by having all the men in the group inflate a large balloon, tuck it under their shirts, and then try to tie their shoes while seated without popping the balloon. This game is harder than you’ll expect if your balloon is properly centered. Flexibility helps, as does the fact that you can just take the damn balloon back out any time. Credit

    Beer Pong: Just play some beer pong, brah. You don’t have to be clever with everything.

    Throwing a diaper party is a great way to celebrate your soon-to-be baby. They are easy to plan, stress-free, and a fun party for everyone who attends!

    We all love baby showers, but they are usually hosted exclusively for moms and the women in their lives. So why not celebrate the dads by throwing a party just for them and their male friends?

    Baby showers for men are becoming more and more common and for good reason. It is a fun way for the dad-to-be to celebrate the pregnancy with his friends, family, and co-workers. One of the best ways to celebrate is with a diaper party.

    If you are new to the guy baby shower idea, as well as a diaper party, we break down the logistics of what is a diaper shower and all the how-tos on how to throw an awesome diaper party in no time.

    What is a Diaper Party?

    A diaper party is a fun and simple way for dads-to-be to celebrate their new bundle of joy. You might also hear people refer to diaper parties as “dadchelor parties,” “man showers,” or “baby stag.”

    A baby shower for men is all about celebrating the father-to-be with all his favorite things. Guests typically bring a pack of diapers and perhaps some wipes to help the future parents stock up on the important baby essentials.

    This is a low-key gathering for guys to get together and have fun. A diaper party is straightforward in comparison to a baby shower, where the husbands celebrate with simple snacks and beer.

    Why Have a Diaper Party?

    A baby shower is not just for the mother-to-be. It’s also for the father, who will have a hand in taking care of and raising the child. A diaper party is a great way to honor the father of the baby on his upcoming role as a parent.

    Diapers are the most needed item for babies. However, they are also one of the most expensive. Given that on average babies wear about 3,000 diapers in the first year, the cost can be quite staggering.

    That’s where diaper parties come in! Instead of having the guys bring breastfeeding equipment, toys, or other baby accessories as gifts, they can bring boxes of diapers. Having this fun get-together will provide the expecting parents some financial relief as they stock up on diapers for the first few months.

    What is the Difference Between a Baby Shower and a Diaper Party?

    There are some pretty distinct differences between a baby shower and a diaper party. The main difference is that guests bring diapers for gifts instead of other baby-related items such as pacifiers, washcloths, and receiving blankets.

    Commonly baby showers have:

    • A party theme
    • Decorations
    • Favors
    • Baby shower games and activities
    • Prizes for games
    • Gifts from a registry that are wrapped. (Usually, this is the highlight of the shower where everyone watches the mom-to-be unwrap them.
    • Themed food or typical baby shower food
    • Invitations
    • Attended by women only, unless it specifically indicates on the invite that it is co-ed.

    Diaper Parties have:

    • No party theme
    • Usually no decorations
    • Food is usually snacks, finger food, or a BBQ
    • They might have 1-2 baby shower games for men
    • Gifts are diapers and wipes that are unwrapped
    • Beer is usually the preferred drink at the shower
    • Invitations
    • Attended by friends of the dad, family, and some co-workers.

    Who Should be Invited to a Diaper Party?

    When it comes to who is invited to the diaper party the dad-to-be decides the invite list. This usually consists of friends, co-workers, and family.

    Who Hosts a Diaper Party?

    Typically diaper parties are hosted by the dad-to-be’s family or close friends. Similar to a baby shower, it’s not common etiquette for you to host your own diaper shower.

    If you are a dad-to-be and want a reason to get together with friends to celebrate the last days before fatherhood, tell your close friends or family that you would like to have a men’s baby shower. Introduce them to the idea of a diaper shower as your preferred celebration.

    How to Throw an Amazing Diaper Party

    1. Pick a Location

    You will want to pick a location to have the party. This is typically at someone’s home or in a backyard.

    For more extensive celebrations, the diaper party can take place at a location where there are multiple activities. For example, if the father-to-be is a fan of golfing, consider having the diaper party at a country club where he can play a round of golf with his friends before dining at the restaurant.

    Other great places are at a sporting event or at a favorite bar. The one thing to consider is if you will be drinking at the party you want to make sure that your location allows for this.

    2. Choose a Theme

    Baby showers for men usually are unthemed. They really are just gatherings to get together and have fun. If you would like to spice it up a little bit you can easily have a themed party! Some great options are:

    • BBQ and Beer
    • Pizza
    • Diaper Raffle
    • Poker and Pints
    • Dadchleor Party
    • Burgers, Babies, and Beer
    • Chuggies and Huggies
    • BYOD (Bring Your Own Diapers)
    • A Baby is Brewing
    • Diapers Brew and Shooting Too

    3. Compile a Guest List

    Talk with the dad-to-be about who he wants to be at the party. Get phone numbers or addresses so you can let all the guests know.

    4. Create Diaper Party Invites

    You will want to let people know about the event. So grab some fun diaper party invites and send them, or if it is easier you can send a text to let them know about the party. You can even send the invites through email if this is more your style.

    On the diaper party invite be sure to put the following information:

    • Dad-to-be’s name
    • Date, time, location of the party
    • RSVP number so you know how many to plan for.
    • A reminder to bring diapers as some of the guests might not be familiar with a diaper shower.
    Diaper Party Invitation Ideas

    When it comes to diaper party invites, make it as stress-free as you can. If you decide to mail out invitations, there are many options on Amazon for you to choose from. Some are even customizable so you can mail them right out after you receive them!

    Here are some of our favorite invitations that are perfect for a dadchelor party.

    5. Prepare Food and Drinks

    When planning a diaper party, consider simple food that you can eat easily with your hands. Hamburgers, wings, hot dogs, tacos, and pizza are the most common food choices, but you can do sandwiches, dips, or even just snacks.

    Beer is the most common drink to serve, but you can also serve cocktails or hard alcohol if you choose. I always recommend having plenty of water and some soda on hand just in case friends and family choose not to drink.

    When it comes to dessert, storebought cookies or a cake are a great choice. No need for fancy pastries!

    6. Decorate for the Diaper Party

    Diaper parties are low-key, so no decorations are necessary! A group of men probably won’t even notice if you put up any decorations.

    But if you want to spruce up the place a little, here are a couple of easy decoration ideas:

    7. Set Up Diaper Party Games

    Get your guests excited with fun and exciting games at the diaper party. There are some pretty fun games out there designed for men’s baby showers that the guys will love.

    Diaper party games can be as simple as playing the father-to-be’s favorite board games. For example, you can have the guys gather around to play poker or Cards Against Humanity.

    If the father-to-be is a gamer, you can throw a diaper party featuring various video games. Multiplayer games like Mario Kart and Super Mash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch are always super fun options. If there are guests who live out of state and can’t make it to the party, you can always include them by playing online games like Among Us and Castle Crashers.

    For diaper party game ideas that will get everyone up and moving, lawn games like cornhole or spikeball are easy to set up and fun to play.

    If you want to have more baby-themed games at the dadchelor party, here are some great ideas:

    • Chugging Contest- Grab some baby bottles and fill them with beer to see who can drink it the fastest.
    • Diaper Changing Challenge- Blindfold the guests and give them all a baby doll and a diaper to see who can change their baby’s diaper the fastest. We can all use more practice on changing a diaper with the baby coming.
    • Pop the Belly- Give the dads a chance to know what pregnancy feels like with this pop the baby game! Each guest puts a balloon under their shirt and has to figure out how to pop it without anything sharp. The first one that pops their balloon wins.

    If you choose to have games at your dadchelor party, it is always fun to have prizes. These can be simple like an awesome beer flavor or a gift certificate to a restaurant.

    8. Hold a Diaper Raffle

    One fun activity that will ensure the dad-to-be gets as many diapers as possible while making the diaper party extra exciting is to hold a diaper raffle.

    The rule of the diaper raffle is that guests that bring a pack of diapers are entered into the raffle. You can expand the acceptable items to baby wipes and other diaper-related essentials such as diaper rash cream.

    Each pack of diapers counts for one raffle ticket. So if someone brings 10 packs of diapers, then he gets 10 raffle tickets and increases his chance of winning a prize.

    You can cut up pieces of paper and write the guests’ names on them for the raffle tickets. To save time, you can also purchase these diaper raffle tickets that match the beer theme:

    If you are doing a diaper raffle, make sure you include the instructions on the invitations, especially if you have specific requirements such as organic or cloth diapers.

    Of course, then you need to decide on a raffle prize! Some prize ideas include:

    • Gift cards or certificates
    • Subscriptions
    • Gift baskets
    • Alcohol
    • Movie tickets
    • Video games
    • Coffee mugs

    Diaper Party Gift Ideas

    If you are attending a diaper party, selecting a gift is easy. Unlike a baby shower, where you have a whole list of best pregnancy gifts for moms to choose from, you just need to stop by the store on the way and grab a pack or two of diapers and some wipes and you are all set. No need to wrap them either!

    When selecting your diaper size, it is common to get newborn diapers, but try to avoid these as the baby only will wear these for a couple of weeks, and some won’t even wear them at all. Try to choose sizes 1, 2, or 3 because these are the sizes that babies wear the longest.

    Fun and Easy Diaper Party for the Father-to-Be

    Baby showers are the perfect way to celebrate the birth of a baby. However, men often feel left out because the activities are often geared toward women. But dads are important too, and they deserve a special day to celebrate with their buddies before stepping into fatherhood.

    Throwing an awesome diaper party is simple and fun! There is no reason to go crazy in the planning. It is a fun way to celebrate the dad-to-be, get together, and spoil the baby that will be here soon.

    The parents-to-be will be so thankful for all their wonderful friends and family and all the diaper gifts they will receive. Having a large stock of diapers will at least mean one less thing to worry about when taking care of a newborn.

    Trust me, nobody wants to be running out for a diaper run at 2 AM with an unexpected baby diaper blowout. Oh, the joy of parenthood.

    Secret of the name – 30 strong names for a boy

    A name for a child is, without exaggeration, an important component of his future life. It is known that among male names there are “strong” and “weak

    A name for a child is, without exaggeration, an important part of his future life. It is known that among male names there are “strong” and “weak”, which have a certain energy and can endow a person with certain qualities. Therefore, before giving your son a name, be sure to familiarize yourself with its semantic load.

    Source: Instagram @photo_ginger_

    In addition, parents need to remember that name abbreviations and affectionate nicknames can also affect the child’s perception of self. It is worth alternating such manifestations of love with the full name, and also, if possible, reduce their use when the child is already in school. Otherwise, an adult man may forever remain a soft and infantile “Vlad”, although he had the makings of a strong Vlad.

    If everyone knows about the “strength” of the names Alexander and Vladimir, then there are less common names that many have forgotten about.

    Daniel

    This name is translated from Hebrew as “God is the judge of everything” and has a biblical origin.

    Daniil is a strong, balanced man who is not inclined to make decisions in a hurry. He has a well-developed intuition, all things are sorted out, and he accepts adversity and problems with restraint and optimism.

    Such boys are inclined towards the exact sciences, love analytics, and often have outstanding intellectual abilities. In addition, Daniels are very moral people, rarely betray, appreciate friends and family, love their home and are not prone to senseless adventures.

    Mark

    The origin of the name Mark is still unknown. There is a version that the name sounds consonant with the Latin word “marcus”, which means “hammer”. It is also suggested that the name originates from the name of the god of war Mars or from the French word “marquis” (marquis).

    Despite the fact that this name sounds very beautiful and “strong”, the upbringing of such a child should not be left to chance. Since childhood, Mark has been a rather narcissistic and selfish boy, but if his energy is directed in the right direction, this trait can be balanced by politeness and a willingness to come to the rescue of others.

    A child with this name is often jealous of the successes of others, so from childhood he must be taught patience and concentration on his own victories, as well as the ability to lose with dignity. In adulthood, Mark is a rather dominant man who strives to be the master of the house and the leader at work.

    If Maxim is deprived of excessive vanity and self-confidence, he will be able to achieve a lot in life and become a reliable man, a loving father and husband.

    Maxims are smart, sociable, able to find an approach to almost any person and persuade them to do anything. People with this name are good at “calculating” people and are able to manipulate them for their own purposes. Arseniy is a dreamy and creative person, so the main thing for parents is to instill in the child a sense of discipline and responsibility in time, otherwise in adulthood such a man may not finish the work he has begun to the end and rush from passion to passion.

    If determination and firmness are brought up in a child, Arseniy will achieve success and will not lose his sincerity.

    For such a man, self-realization, material wealth and love for his work are very important. But laziness can destroy many of Bogdan’s talents in early childhood, so parents should not cultivate this trait in a boy.

    In life and in the family, Bogdan is a clear leader. He is restrained, always behaves with dignity and knows his own worth. Such a person will never become a victim of circumstances, since he does not go with the flow, but builds his life himself.

    Ostap

    Ostap can be translated from Greek as “solid”, “persistent”.

    Ostap is a male leader who always has his own point of view on everything. Ostap does not like too close attention to himself from other people, he does not trust everyone, and he demonstrates his talents only in the circle of his close ones.

    A man with this name is a subtle psychologist who likes to observe people and evaluate their behavior in different situations. Also, such a bright personality is not prone to breakdowns, depression, lives with an optimistic attitude and has a high self-esteem. But if parents want Ostap to find himself in some business, they should muffle their son’s zeal to participate in everything in the world and go to all sections at school.

    Orestes

    The origin of the name originates from the Greek word “oros”, which means “mountain”, “mountainous”.

    Plato is a rather calm and withdrawn person, he does not like to share his feelings and emotions, but he is very reliable and faithful in any relationship, both in companionship and family.

    Stanislav

    The name Stanislav comes from two Slavic words: “stan” (“become”) and “slav” (“glory”). Therefore, it is translated as “establishing glory.”

    From childhood, Stas is a very kind and open boy, but he can be quite unrestrained in his desires and dreams. The character of Stanislav is very unusual, his way of thinking is different from those around him, and therefore it is difficult for him to find true friends in spirit.

    Even before they can talk, young babies know that two people must have a close relationship if they’re willing to do to anything that involves swapping saliva.

    Kissing on the mouth, sharing a spoon, taking licks off of someone’s ice-cream cone — all of these activities generally only happen when people have an especially intimate relationship, and this fact appears to be obvious to infants who are only 8 to 10 months old, according to a new study in the journal Science.

    “From a really young age, without much experience at all with these things, infants are able to understand not only who is connected but how they are connected,” says Ashley Thomas of MIT, who studies what babies and young children understand about the complexities of their social world. “They are able to distinguish between different kinds of cooperative relationships.”

    Who do babies look to first?

    Thomas and her colleagues reached that conclusion after showing videos of carefully crafted puppet shows to babies and toddlers.

    One of their videos shows a woman rolling a ball back and forth with a blue fuzzy puppet. Then another woman shares an orange with that same puppet by putting a slice of orange in her mouth, then letting the puppet nibble on the slice, and then putting it back in her own mouth.

    “Both of these interactions are perfectly friendly and pro-social,” says Thomas, but taking bites off the same food suggests a more intimate relationship than simply playing ball.

    To test whether infants made this distinction, the video then shows the two women with the blue fuzzy puppet in between them. The puppet starts to cry and puts its head down, as if it is suddenly unhappy.

    When the puppet cried, infants and toddlers looked first and looked longer at the woman who had shared bites of her orange.

    “They’re looking in that direction because they expect something to happen there,” says Thomas. “They expect that woman to be the one to respond to the puppet’s distress.

    When the two women were shown with a totally new puppet that started to cry, however, infants and young children looked at both women equally often. This suggested that they didn’t see this particular food-sharing woman as especially helpful; instead, her relationship with the puppet was what really mattered.

    To make sure it wasn’t just sharing of food that seemed to make babies infer the existence of a close social connection, the researchers created another, similar video. This time, instead of sharing an orange slice, a woman simply put her finger in her own mouth and then put it in a purple puppet’s mouth, before putting it back in her own mouth.

    Then that same woman also interacted with a green puppet, touching its forehead and then touching her own forehead. After that, the video showed the woman seemingly in distress, with the purple and green puppets looking on.

    Infants and toddlers gazed at the purple puppet that had the more intimate, finger-in-the-mouth interaction, as if expecting this puppet to be more affected by the woman’s consternation, presumably because they seemed to have a closer relationship.

    The researchers also studied older children, aged 5 to 7, and told them about another child who was sharing stuff. Some of the sharing involved contact with saliva, although the scientists never explicitly referred to spit.

    “We just said, like, ‘This kid is eating applesauce with a spoon and he shares his applesauce with one of these two people using his spoon. Who do you think he shared with?’ And the choices were always between a family member and a friend,” explains Thomas.

    For items that could be easily divvied up, like separate pieces of candy or toys, kids thought a person was just as likely to share with a friend as a family member.

    “But when it comes to saliva-sharing items, like sharing an ice cream cone or using the same spoon, then kids think that the kid is more likely to share with family,” says Thomas.

    Saliva as social glue

    Other researchers find these results intriguing.

    “These findings not only illuminate what young children understand about the social structures around them but also spark further questions regarding how children come to acquire these expectations and how universal they might be,” writes Christine Fawcett of Uppsala University in Sweden, in a commentary that was published along with this new study.

    She notes that the idea of exchanging saliva with a stranger can create feelings of disgust, perhaps as a way to protect people from contamination or disease, but that people will happily do this with those close to them, even pet dogs.

    There could be an evolutionary pressure to suppress disgust with bodily substances to aid in taking care of babies, and infants’ experience of this kind of caretaking could then lead to a learned expectation that such behavior is associated with closeness, Fawcett points out.

    But Alan Fiske, an anthropologist at UCLA, believes that babies have an innate understanding of certain kinds of social relationships. He’s written that humans are born primed to recognize four fundamental forms of relationships, and he calls this study “enormously important.”

    In relationships characterized by “communal sharing,” he says, sharing saliva “is a way of connecting bodies, or making bodies the same in some respect. And that’s the crucial thing. When people feel that some how they are essentially the same, almost in an embodied way, then they feel socially the same.”

    “Spit sharing is one instance of, or one type of, connecting bodies physically through bodily substances,” says Fiske. But there are other ways — such as having sex, breastfeeding, or even mingling blood to become “blood brothers.” The ritual of communion in Christianity, he notes, involves ingesting the body and blood of Jesus Christ as a way for that religion to express and reinforce a communal sharing relationship.

    This kind of close relationship can be created between people in other ways that don’t involve body fluids, however, such as grooming, snuggling and hugging, or synchronous rhythmic movement such as dancing or marching, says Fiske.

    In this view, babies seem to just know all this innately. He believes that future studies will show that babies not only observe these activities to understand the social links of those around them, but also actively initiate these behaviors themselves in order to forge relationships with others.

    “They know how to hug and snuggle, and they know how to feed you, and they like to do those things,” says Fiske. “And they don’t feed just anybody, they feed the people that they love. They don’t cuddle with just anybody, they cuddle with the people that they love.”

    Saliva Collection from Infants and Small Children for Research Studies – Salimetrics

    Studies have reported that some older preschoolers are able to donate saliva samples by spitting or drooling (1,2), but researchers have generally found that using some sort of absorbent device is the best way to collect saliva from young children. Parents often have a better chance of getting the child to accept the device into his or her mouth, but even they may not succeed if the child is frightened, cranky, or overexcited.

    Safety is an important issue when choosing a collection device to use with children, due to the potential for choking. For this reason, we advise that our own SalivaBio Oral Swab (SOS) – a 1 x 3 cm swab made of an inert polymer – should be used only for adults and children 6 years and older.

    Salimetrics previously recommended two devices that could be held by a parent or technician to insure that they were not choking hazards:

    • Braided cotton dental rope. Although widely used in many studies for both children and adults (3-6), cotton was a poor collection material due to its unpleasant taste and texture, the difficulty of recovering the saliva and/or analytes from the cotton, and the fact that it causes interference with certain biomarkers, including testosterone, SIgA, estradiol, DHEA, and progesterone (7,8).
    • The Sorbette – a small, arrowhead-shaped hydrocellulose sponge attached to a plastic shaft. (BD Opthalmic Systems Visipear, prod. no. 581089) The Sorbette was an improvement over cotton rope, with better overall recovery of volume and cortisol compared to cotton (7) and it has been successfully used in studies with young children (8-11). However, the volume recovered from the Sorbette could still be unacceptably low (7). This was mainly due to the sorbette appearing to have collected a sufficient sample volume, before reaching capacity, and because the capcity was limited to 200-300 µL per device. This led to researchers utilizing multiple sorbettes at the same time, and even then still failing to obtain enough sample to complete testing. An additional negative point was that Salimetrics approved the Sorbette for use only when testing for cortisol, α-amylase, cotinine, and SIgA, since it caused assay interference for other analytes. Similar “eyespear” devices from other manufacturers have also been found to cause varying degrees of assay interference for cortisol determination, unlike the Sorbette, and they should not be used for saliva collection without appropriate validation (12). Use of the Sorbette was also problematic when samples were to be tested for analytes that require expression of assay results in relation to saliva flow, such as SIgA and sAA. (13,14) Given its limited absorbent capacity, there was a real likelihood that the Sorbette would reach saturation very quickly when adequate saliva was present in the mouth. We therefore felt that it was probably not possible to reliably estimate flow rates by noting the length of time it was in the mouth and weighing the device to determine the volume absorbed. (14)

    Given the need for a child-safe collection device that works with a broader range of analytes and that collects a larger volume, Salimetrics has introduced two alternative versions of the SOS: the SalivaBio Children’s Swab (SCS) (Item No. 5001.06), and the SalivaBio Infant’s Swab (SIS) (Item No. 5001.08) These devices are manufactured in longer lengths, which allows one end to be held by an adult while the other end is placed in the child’s mouth. The diameters of the SCS and SIS are appropriate for the size of the children’s mouths, 8 mm and 5 mm, respectively. The polymer used for the swabs is very durable and can withstand chewing by the child, and its taste and texture are also acceptable to children. Like the original SOS, samples collected with either the SCS or the SIS may be tested for multiple analytes. And, importantly, even at small collected volumes of 25-50 µL, the recoveries of saliva volume and cortisol from the SCS are = 90 and 95 %, respectively.

    Either swab can also be centrifuged or compressed (in a 5 cc needless syringe) if desired. In this case, the wet end of the swab should be inserted into the storage tube (or syringe), followed by doubling the dry end over into the opening, and finally using the cap (or plunger) to push the entire swab into the interior space. This procedure will allow the entire swab and storage tube to be weighed before and after collection of samples for determination of SIgA or sAA, in order to estimate the saliva flow rate during the timed collection period. The issue of the swab remaining in the mouth after the point of saturation is still a concern, however, and estimates of the flow rate and secretion rate will be inaccurate if the collection period is too long (14). We therefore advise that some preliminary study should be done to determine the optimum collection duration for the type of subjects in the study.

    Researchers with infants achieved the highest success rate for saliva collection with the infant swab when the infants were allowed to chew or suck on the swab for 30-60 seconds, followed by mopping up any pooled saliva left in the mouth or on the face. The samples were then recovered immediately by compression in a syringe, and the procedure was repeated to collect more saliva until a sufficient volume was reached. When the samples arrived at our testing laboratory for testosterone analysis, most of the volumes were around 1 mL, and there were no samples with insufficient volume.

    Sialoadenitis (inflammation of the salivary glands) – treatment, symptoms

    In the human oral cavity, on the surface of the mucous membrane, there are three pairs of large salivary glands. One pair of them – parotid – are located in front and under the auricle. These are the largest salivary glands. The second pair – submandibular – is located under the lower jaw, slightly below the back teeth. The third pair – the sublingual salivary glands – are located under the mucous membrane of the bottom of the oral cavity on the left and right sides of the tongue.

    All three pairs of salivary glands produce a specific secret – saliva. Saliva is produced in the body through special ducts located inside the oral cavity.

    The main function of saliva in the body is to ensure normal and healthy digestion. Saliva softens hard pieces of food, preparing them for entry into the stomach. It also helps a person to swallow these softened food pieces.

    If a person develops inflammation of the salivary glands, saliva ceases to perform its main function. The process of saliva production fails, swallowing food becomes more and more difficult.

    Why inflammation of the salivary glands begins

    There are two types of inflammation of the salivary glands.

    Epidemic sialoadenitis

    Epidemic sialoadenitis is caused by viral diseases and infections. A common cause of inflammation of the salivary glands is mumps. The virus in this disease passes from one person to another by airborne droplets. The inflammatory process in the salivary glands occurs with a strong increase in their size.

    Non-epidemic sialoadenitis

    Another cause of inflammation of the salivary glands is the formation of blockage of the salivary duct. Violations in the functioning of the duct can occur due to severe mechanical injuries, the ingress of foreign bodies into them, the development of salivary stone disease in humans – sialolithiasis.

    A very common reason for the development of inflammation of the salivary glands is the irregular observance of the rules of oral hygiene. Non-epidemic parotitis – this is what inflammation of the parotid salivary glands is called in medicine – can occur as a result of the transfer of an infectious disease (pneumonia, influenza, typhoid, encephalitis are at risk) or as a result of surgical intervention.

    How sialadenitis manifests itself

    The most common symptoms of inflammation of the salivary glands include:

    • pain during eating, swallowing food;
    • redness, swelling of the face or neck;
    • disturbance of taste sensations;
    • the presence of an unpleasant aftertaste in the oral cavity;
    • dry mouth;
    • difficulty opening the mouth;
    • the appearance of shortness of breath;
    • general increase in body temperature.

    It should be borne in mind that in acute sialoadenitis, the symptoms subside as quickly and abruptly as they appear. But this is not a reason to forget about the problems that have only recently tormented you. The fact is that the disease does not go away, but only goes into a quiet stage, which can subsequently lead to the development of chronic sialadenitis.

    Sialadenitis can be accompanied by complications if treatment is not started in time or if all prescriptions of the attending physician are not followed. The most common complications include:

    • formation of abscesses on the floor of the mouth;
    • abscess (purulent inflammation) of the salivary glands;
    • re-infection.

    Diagnosis and treatment of inflammation of the salivary glands

    How sialoadenitis is diagnosed

    Diagnose sialadenitis by a dentist during an oral examination or by a general practitioner if you go to a multidisciplinary clinic with a disease. During the examination, a significant increase in the salivary glands is usually detected, sometimes – the release of purulent fluid. In the case of a bacterial infection, soreness of the salivary glands is revealed.

    If the attending physician suspects an abscess, the patient will usually order an ultrasound. Our Dentistry is located in the same building as the multidisciplinary clinic “Diamed” on Schelkovskaya. You will be able to quickly receive treatment and undergo the necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

    Treatment of sialadenitis

    Sialoadenitis is easier to treat when the disease is acute and has not become chronic.

    The treatment of acute sialadenitis consists in the use of special drugs that increase the secretion of salivary fluid. In the treatment of sialoadenitis, an important place is occupied by physiotherapeutic procedures, in particular ultra-high frequency therapy (UHF) and laser physiotherapy. After the start of physiotherapeutic procedures, relief occurs already on the third day, and on the 7th day the disease completely disappears. The physiotherapy room is located in the same building as our dentistry, you will be directed to an appointment with a specialist physiotherapist for a free consultation.

    During the treatment period, it is very important to follow all the rules of oral hygiene. It is recommended to brush your teeth not only in the morning and evening, but also to clean after each meal with dental floss. Compliance with this rule helps prevent the further development of inflammation. For the period of treatment, smokers are strictly required to get rid of their bad habits.

    During treatment it is very correct to observe the diet. The food you eat should be cut into small pieces. Also, a positive effect on the salivary glands has an abundant use of warm liquids – milk, rosehip broth, exclusively fresh juices and fruit drinks.

    If you have a fever, your doctor will prescribe antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drugs.

    Chronic sialoadenitis is difficult and long to treat. There is a high probability that a complete elimination of the disease may not occur. That is why we recommend that you contact your dentist as soon as possible. During periods of onset of exacerbations, antibiotics or drugs that help increase salivation are indicated. Antibacterial therapy is carried out. A good effect is the use of direct current of low and low voltage for medicinal purposes (this procedure is called galvanization of the salivary glands).

    Pharyngitis – what is it? Causes, symptoms, treatment

    What is pharyngitis?

    This is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the pharynx and its lymphoid tissue. With pharyngitis, the throat is ticklish, sore and irritated. The pain is aggravated by swallowing. Usually pharyngitis develops with influenza and SARS. Viral pharyngitis usually goes away on its own. Some other less common forms of pharyngitis may require treatment.

    IMPORTANT! Information from the article cannot be used for self-diagnosis and self-treatment! Only a doctor can prescribe the necessary examinations, establish a diagnosis and draw up a treatment plan for a consultation!

    Symptoms:

    • sore throat;
    • pain worse when swallowing;
    • difficult to swallow;
    • swollen cervical lymph nodes;
    • white spots or streaks on tonsils, back of throat;
    • hoarse or hoarse voice.

    Accompanying symptoms of SARS or flu can be: cough, sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, fever, pain in the head and body, nausea or vomiting.

    When to go to the doctor?

    Show your child to the doctor if the child’s sore throat does not go away after breakfast.

    Call an ambulance immediately if:

    • the child is having difficulty breathing;
    • he cannot swallow;
    • The infant is unusually drooling, which may indicate an inability to swallow saliva.

    If an adult has pharyngitis, see a doctor if:

    • severe or prolonged (more than a week) sore throat;
    • sore throat often;
    • difficulty breathing, swallowing or opening the mouth;
    • earache;
    • joint pain;
    • rash;
    • fever above 38.3 for more than three days;
    • blood in saliva or sputum;
    • pain when turning the head;
    • nodes and tumors on the neck;
    • hoarseness, hoarseness lasts more than two weeks.

    Causes

    As a rule, it is a viral infection (ARVI), in some cases it is bacterial (streptococcus, pneumococcus). In addition, the cause of pharyngitis can be:

    • Allergic to dust, mold, pet hair, plant pollen. Since allergies cause a runny nose, fluid can drain down the back of the nasopharynx and irritate the throat;
    • dryness of the air, especially in the morning;
    • tobacco smoke, chemical irritants;
    • overexertion of the vocal cords (long performances, loud screams at sports competitions, etc. )
    • gastroesophageal reflux – reflux of stomach contents back into the esophagus. May be accompanied by heartburn, lump in the throat, hoarseness.
    • HIV. Pharyngitis may be a sign of a recent HIV infection in the body. Also, people who have long been infected with HIV may experience secondary acute and chronic pharyngitis caused by cytomegalovirus, oral candidiasis, and common viruses that cause SARS. These complications in HIV-positive people can be dangerous.
    • malignant tumors of the throat, tongue, trachea can also be manifested by pharyngitis, coupled with hoarseness, breathing noise, blood in saliva and sputum, a “knot” on the neck.

    Rare causes of pharyngitis can be a throat abscess and epiglottitis, a serious condition in which the epiglottis, which is like a petal between the trachea and larynx, becomes inflamed and blocks air from entering the airways. As a rule, epiglottitis in children is caused by a hemophilic infection, against which it is necessary to get vaccinated in time.

    Risks and measures to prevent pharyngitis

    Children and adolescents get sick more often with pharyngitis, adults also get sick, but less often. Also, the risks of pharyngitis increase with dry air, irritation of the throat with tobacco smoke or chemicals, with allergies, weakened immunity, chronic or frequent infections of the nasopharynx.

    You can reduce the likelihood of illness in the same way as with other nasopharyngeal infections: wash your hands, do not drink from the same cup with others, cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing (do not “share” your viruses), wipe the screen and keypads of phones, and other devices, etc.

    Diagnosis of pharyngitis

    Usually, the ENT examines the patient’s throat, as well as his nose and ears, carefully palpates the lymph nodes, listens to breathing with a stethoscope.

    The streptococcal test is a simple and reliable way to diagnose bacterial pharyngitis. The doctor takes a scraping from the child’s throat, and within 24-48 hours the result is ready. Streptococcal pharyngitis will have to be treated with antibiotics.

    We have our own laboratory in the clinic, so you can always take all the necessary tests with us!

    Treatment

    Viral pharyngitis usually resolves within 5-7 days. The child should be provided with:

    • peace and the opportunity to sleep as long as he wants;
    • drink plenty of water to relieve sore throat and prevent dehydration;
    • humidification;
    • Sore throat can be relieved by both warm drinks and cold ice cream, especially popsicles;
    • for sore throats, gargle with a solution of table salt – a teaspoon in 250 ml of warm water;
    • children over 4 years of age can be offered lozenges for sore throats. Do not give lozenges to small children – they may choke;
    • do not smoke around a sick child, avoid strong irritating odors in the throat;
    • Paracetamol and ibuprofen medications can help relieve sore throat and high fever.
