What Babies Need at 6 Months

What are the Must Haves for a 6 Month Old Baby?

What do babies need at 6 months?

Between 6-12 months, your baby changes so much! It’s an entirely different experience from 0-6 months.

You’re introducing solids. Your baby is learning to sit up, crawl, stand and walk. He or she is talking and teething more, grabbing and throwing things, and reaching for different toys.

What you need during 6-12 months can be very different from what you used during 0-6 months.

My baby just turned 1 year! Here are the six month baby essentials I loved!

They helped her in these new development stages. Or they made my life easier and gave me more time to do other things. They didn’t break the bank!

I have no regrets. I would purchase these again without hesitation!

26 Essential Items for a 6 Month Old

6 Month Feeding Essentials:

1. Bib

I’ve used both the cloth and silicone bibs. I’ve found the silicone bibs are better because they’re easy to put on and wipe down. I like these particularly because they’re larger and softer than other bibs I’ve seen.

When she was 1, I switched to this bib with sleeves. It’s light, waterproof and has velcro tabs. It was perfect for us at 1 year when she started being able to move her silicone bib out of the way and getting the food all over her clothes!

Some moms prefer this bib with sleeves for their 6 month old. I still prefer the silicone bib at 6 months because it’s just a little bit easier to clean and has a slightly better pocket to catch food.

2. Suction feeding mat

With your baby throwing everything on the ground, a suction feeding bowl is a must!

This one is made of silicone so even if your child is able to remove the suction cups and throw it, it won’t damage your floors or furniture. It’s easy to clean and dishwasher safe.

3. Utensils

I LOVE these bendable spoons and forks!

Babies struggle to hold spoons let alone get the spoon into their mouth.

When my baby could finally hold a spoon, I still had to assist her with getting the food into her mouth. She would turn the spoon over in transit, drop the food and then get what little was left in her mouth.

With these bendable spoons and forks, you can shorten the length or change the angle. It can be adapted according to your child’s motor skill development.

Little ones get to the stage of wanting to be independent eaters, and these bendable utensils help them get there with less food spillage and waste.

4. Transition cup

We heard from a nurse that we shouldn’t give our 6 month old girl a traditional sippy cup because it might result in tooth decay and speech issues. She said babies need to learn how to use regular cups.

We gave our baby water through a regular cup. Naturally, the water spilled everywhere!

We heard from a fellow mom about this trainer cup. It’s exactly like a regular cup except there are minimal spills!

The baby drinks from the rim like any regular cup. It’s only when you tilt the cup and apply pressure to the inside rim that liquid comes out. Your baby can whip it around or throw it on the ground – maybe a few drops will come out, but that’s it!

5. Snack storage

You could use ziplock bags for storing snacks. We love this snack catcher because my 6 month old baby can feed independently.

6. Iron-fortified cereal

This is the first food my baby ate. Our doctor said breast-fed babies need iron rich foods at 6 months because they start losing iron. I mixed the cereal with breast milk.

I had heard from a mom to start with a runny mixture (a bit of cereal with a lot of breast milk) to slowly introduce your baby to feeding from a spoon.

Over time, she suggested to make the mixture more lumpy (add more cereal with the breast milk) so your baby is exposed to different textures. This worked well for us!

If you’re interested in tracking the foods your 6 month old has already tried and monitor reactions to common allergens:

Here’s an prefilled but editable and customizable Baby Foods Checklist printable PDF that’s very inexpensive.

7. Premade food

With every meal, my baby had both pureed/lumpy food (for nutrients) and a finger food (to develop her ability to feed herself).

For the pureed food, I just threw everything we were eating into the blender. My baby ate hardly any of it over days. It was a waste of time.

I then came across premade food pouches.

I didn’t use these all the time because I wanted to expose her to different foods. It was a convenient way to feed her a good serving of fruits and vegetables when things got busy!

I also occasionally gave organic puffs to my 6 month old. They look like cheese puffs, but are a healthier and fun snack option to mix things up.

8. Snack Storage

Little ones are ravenous. I’m constantly preparing snacks and meals for my 6 month old baby.

A Bento Box is a useful item to have for on the go meals.

It’s also practical for portioning out her meal at home.

I like how there are additional separate compartments in this bento box. Sometimes you want that separate container for sauces.

I like how my 6 month old can grow with this bento box and use it in preschool and perhaps later years as well.

9. Tiny Scissors

It might seem odd to see tiny scissors on this list, but they have been a game changer! Making meal prep for a 6 month old SO MUCH EASIER!

I found out about these from my mom!

She got them for my sister-in-law because she was struggling to chop up food for my niece when we were at a restaurant.

While you can use any pair of scissors, these tiny scissors are DESIGNED for parents to efficiently cut up their children’s food:

  • They’re compact and portable – made for taking on the go.
  • They include a holder to keep the scissors clean and protect little ones.
  • The two pack allows you to keep one in the kitchen and one in your diaper bag!
  • They’re faster and easier to use than a knife and cutting board.
  • They’re BPA and Phthalate free.

Like other scissors, after you wash them, dry them immediately before storing to prevent rust!

10. Booster seat

I initially got this Ikea high chair, which came recommended by many moms. It worked well.

The only thing was that the height was too low for her to be able to see the food on the dining room table. It felt like she wasn’t a part of the eating experience with us.

When she was 1, we ended up switching to a Fisher Price Booster Seat and immediately, she was more interested in food and engaged when we all ate together.

It was a small change, but I regret not just buying this booster seat earlier because it can be used with 6 month olds.

What I also like about having a booster seat instead of a high chair is that it’s easily portable. You don’t have to bring along the legs.

This booster seat also grows with your child. You can remove the booster seat table and adjust the height of the seat to fit your table.

Safety and Health Must Haves for a 6 Month Old:

11. Baby gate/playard

We have 2 baby gates.

We live in a house with an open concept layout. We wanted to get an extra wide baby gate – something that could stretch across the entire room. This would give her a large space to play and keep her enclosed within a room.

We love this Summer Infant baby gate! The majority of the gate is mesh so your baby can run into it and not get hurt! It expands to fit openings up to 143″ so it fits spaces perfectly! It doesn’t have to be awkwardly bent. This gate can also convert into a playard.

We also have this Regalo baby gate. It fits up to 192″ wide. This gate looks nice. While it can also work across a room, it works particularly well for spaces where you need the gate to be angled e.g. around a fireplace.

12. Outlet covers

These outlet plug covers do the job. They also block out the draft on exterior walls so you’re saving energy!

13. Bath spout cover

This bath spout cover provides MUCH NEEDED protection from accidental head bumps during bath time! This is especially necessary with the baby increasingly on the move and exploring.

When I first saw this, I thought it was a ridiculous product.

When my little one was wobbly and bumped her head into the coffee table, I just imagined how that could have been the bath spout.

It would have resulted in more than just a scare for her. She would have been seriously hurt.

If you have regular baths in the bath tub, this is a must have! The whale is also gosh darn cute!

This spout is also mold and mildew resistant! With many of its alternatives, mold appears shortly after use.

14. Sunscreen

When a baby’s under 6 months, he/she can’t have sunscreen.

After 6 months, especially when you’re lounging at the beach or outdoor pool, it’s a good idea to have a baby sunscreen on hand.

Getting a mineral sunscreen (made without oxybenzone, parabens or added oils and fragrance) is better than a chemical sunscreen.

Here are a host of benefits detailing why mineral sunscreen is better than chemical sunscreen.

The big reason is because mineral sunscreens are made with natural minerals and not chemicals.

Another reason is that chemical sunscreens take 20 minutes to be absorbed into the skin before it starts working, which you might forget.

If you’re putting your child in daycare, daycare staff don’t have time to manage one kid’s sunscreen application time along with everything else they have to do.

15. Toothbrush

With 6 month olds eating solids, you’ll need to start using a toothbrush even if they don’t have much teeth!

I initially gave my baby the toothbrush she got for free at her first dental visit, but it was too hard on her teeth. She wouldn’t use it.

It’s important for your 6 month old to have a toothbrush with soft bristles so that it’s gentle on their sensitive gums.

With the handles, the baby banana is easy for her to hold and use herself.

Toys for a 6 Months Old Baby:

15. Walker

The Fisher Price Walker is great for 6 month olds and beginner walkers. It’s for ages 6 months-3 years so I imagine she’ll get a lot of use out of it!

There are a lot of activities like piano keys, rollers and 75+ songs!

Even if your baby isn’t interested in walking yet, this is a toy your child can have fun with sitting down.

If your baby is using it to learn how to walk, it does take off quite fast so I recommend closely supervising your baby while he or she is learning how to control the walker.

16. Portable Toy

We love this Baby Einstein Musical Toy! This is a must have distraction toy when we’re in the car and out of the house.

There’s a large button she can press to switch between the 7 songs. She loves watching the lights flashing to the beats. I actually really like listening to the classical tunes – it’s calming!

It’s small enough to fit in the diaper bag!

17. Activity Cube

This activity cube is one of my 6 month old’s favorites! She loves pressing the buttons, seeing the flashing lights and dancing with the songs and animal sounds.

She can also spin the blocks and move the gears. There’s a variety of motor skill development!

This cube can hold her attention for at least a trip to the bathroom! It’s great for encouraging your child to sit up. It’s for ages 6 months-3 years so I can see she’ll get a lot of use out of it!

18. Teether toy

We first got her Sophie the Giraffe when she was 3 months old and she didn’t use it until she was 6-7 months. Now she likes chewing Sophie’s ears and horns when she teethes!

If you have a clip-on, you can attach the teether to the baby’s shirt so it doesn’t fall on the ground.

19. Ball

I first heard about this toy from a mom who was raving about it because even her 6 month old boy (who is a small baby and has tiny fingers) can play with it.

The oball toy ball is soft, light and bendable (it caves in when stepped on so it doesn’t hurt her). The large holes make it easy for my baby to grip. This is the first toy she was able to hold and play with. Now we play catch with it. She loves it!

20. Exersaucer/Jumper

My 6 month old girl loves this Baby Einstein Activity Jumper! There are over 12 activities including musical ones. The seat swivels so your baby can independently move to different activity stations.

I like how my baby can also jump in this – building her leg muscles.

This is a great place to put your baby in when you need to get a few things done around the house!

I’ve often heard it referred to as the circle of neglect because you can leave your baby in it for hours! I would normally only put her in it for 15 minutes/day as I’ve heard overuse can hinder their development.

Books for a 6 Month Old

21. Touch and feel books

We got the Baby Touch and Feel Animals book as a gift. She can play with it on her own. She likes flipping the pages and touching the different textures e.g. puppy’s fur. It’s durable and she can’t chew the pages as easily as other books.

There aren’t many words or textures, but it’s my baby’s favorite book! When I often put out 5-10 different board books for her to choose from (some of them also have touch and feel features), she always goes for this one!

22. Colorful and engaging books

We also got this Usborne Book Collection as a gift. The books are about dinosaurs, animal homes, the zoo, night time, the garden, and the farm. I love reading these with her!

There’s so much good information for her to know. The illustrations are beautiful. She loves touching the holes and moving the flaps.

Clothing Needs for a 6 Month Old

Related: Here are our baby clothing essentials for the first year.

24. Bigger Clothes

When she was 6 months and going out more frequently, we bought larger versions of all of the staple clothing pieces like:

  • Short-sleeve bodysuits
  • Long-sleeve bodysuits
  • Pajamas
  • Sleep sack
  • Footed pants
  • Shorts
  • Warm jacket
  • Sweater

Swim suit

At 6 months, we started taking our baby swimming.

From speaking with other moms and dads, it seems this is the age people often start taking their babies to “swimming lessons”.

We took our baby to a swimming lesson. The babies don’t actually learn how to swim on their own, but they get comfortable with being in the water. There’s usually singing and lots of water movement. It’s fun!

If your little one is planning on going to an outdoor pool area or beach, it’s convenient to have a swimsuit that has UPF 50+ protection.

Here’s one with UPF 50+ Protection for girls.

Here’s a boy’s version.

Sun shirt

A fellow mom introduced me to these breathable UPF 50+ long sleeve sun shirts.

I love them!

I use them for when we’re going out to the beach or park or it’s just a really sunny day and I just want to put her in a light shirt (that doesn’t have to be waterproof).

With the shirt, I don’t have to put as much sunscreen on her.

18. Hats with a wide brim

During 6-9 months is when you often see babies start to crawl. With them moving around a lot, this UPF 50+ sun hat has a wide brim to protect the face, but it’s not too huge to obstruct his or her vision.

It’s light and can be easily folded for the diaper bag. It has a chin strap for windier days.

The best part is that there’s an adjustable toggle so you can loosen or tighten the width of the hat so it’s always the perfect fit and stays on your baby’s head.

23. Socks with grips

During 6-12 months, she was often pulling to a stand and learning how to balance.

It was important for her to be either barefoot or had socks with grips for hardwood floors.

19. Everyday Shoes

My baby didn’t need shoes before she was 12 months.

I know some babies start walking as early as 9 months.

If your baby is an early walker, you’ll want to get good everyday shoes.

These Stride Rite sneakers are genuine leather with a rubber sole so they’re soft and durable.

I love how they offer great support and promote natural foot and balance development.

There’s a memory foam sole so it’s extra comfortable. They’re easy to put on with the velcro strap.

Stride Rite has a huge variety of baby shoes to fit different tastes.

Additional Things a 6 Month Old Needs

Here are a few other things I used a lot in her 6-12 months. I also used these things during her 0-6 months period.

24. Carrier

This ergonomic carrier was a lifesaver for me to be able to comfortably carry my baby while being hands-free and get stuff done around the house! I’m not a doctor.

After reading about hip dysplasia and the importance of using a baby carrier that has a supported seated position, this carrier became my #1 choice. Of course, you should always do your own research on the topic before making a decision.

What I like particularly about this carrier is that it can be used with a newborn right away at 7 lbs (no additional infant insert required) up until the baby is 45 lbs.

It can be adapted for all carry positions including facing the baby inwards and outwards, carrying on the hip or back.

You can even breastfeed your baby in it. Sometimes I found the carrier easier to use than a stroller when I was out of the house. For example, when I was going to a restaurant with tight spacing or on a plane.

25. Diaper pail

The Ubbi Diaper Pail was one of the most expensive diaper pails on the market. After a lot of consideration, we got it and we are so glad we did.

With her eating solids, the diapers have gotten smellier!  It has been 12 months and it still traps in the odor. The odor hasn’t been absorbed like what I’ve heard can happen with the plastic pails.

You can open it using just one hand. With its tall and thin frame, it’s a space saver and is large enough to hold at least a week’s worth of diapers. There is a child safety lock feature but we haven’t had to use it yet.

As it has a classic steel design, we might just keep it after our diaper days are over and use it as a regular trash can in the house.

Here’s the best part:

There are no special expensive refill bags like the Diaper Genie; we just use regular garbage bags. If you do have a leak in your bag, I highly recommend cleaning the pail immediately because otherwise you might get rust.

Original gifts for a Baby for 6 Months

Do not chase expensive presents, because the baby has many important dates ahead and you will have time to give him everything you plan. When choosing a gift for a baby for 6 months, give preference to unusual and memorable things.

Box for tooth and curl. An elegant and sweet piece that will keep memories for years to come. The box is small, has a cute design and nice colors.

Inside there is a container for a tooth and a special vessel where you can put the first curl. Also, a tag from the hospital is often placed in such a box.

Busyboard. This is an educational board for children. In another way, it is called the Montessori board. It has a lot of buttons, locks and other household items with which you can perform various actions.

This unusual gift will quench your child’s curiosity, teach you how to properly handle real-life analogues of objects, and develop fine motor skills.

Impression set for stem and handle. It will allow you to create unique personalized prints of the hands and feet of the baby. The result is a cute composition that will decorate the interior of any room, not only the nursery. This is a priceless gift for a lifetime.

Engraved silver spoon. This thing is given for the first feeding or, as the people say, “for the first tooth.” Silver has bactericidal properties and conducts heat well, so the baby will never get burned.

If the food is hot, the spoon will immediately become hot. A good gift that can become a family heirloom and be passed down from generation to generation.

Useful gifts for a boy for six months

Thinking about what to give a child for six months, remember that a growing person needs a lot. Therefore, in order to please the hero of the occasion and his parents, bet on gifts that are of practical use.

Teether. During the eruption of milk teeth, babies endure suffering, do not sleep at night and make parents worry.

To facilitate this process, we came up with special products that scratch the gums well and relieve discomfort.

There are different types of teethers. It can be an ordinary rattle with a rubber tip or a toy filled with a special gel. Before using it, it must be cooled in the refrigerator.

Slingobus. An indispensable item for many mothers and a fun toy to give to a 6 month old baby. Bright beads attract the attention of the child.

The product is made from unpainted wooden beads, which are tied with cotton threads or natural fabric.

Some beads may make sounds such as ringing or rustling, as well as being different to the touch. Eco-friendly beads develop the baby and allow mom to relax.

Non-spill cup. At this age, children are gradually transferred to adult food, so they are in dire need of water. Also, the baby will not refuse delicious compote or warm milk. Very little time will pass, and the boy will want to drink without the help of adults.

At this point, a non-spill cup comes to the rescue. A cup of light weight, with a comfortable spout and handles will definitely appeal to the hero of the occasion.

Interesting pot. Very soon, the child’s parents will face the problem of how to wean the boy from diapers and painlessly teach him to the potty.

When choosing a gift for a baby boy for 6 months, you need to be guided by such principles as safety, comfort and convenience. To attract a baby, you need to buy things with bright colors, now there are even musical models of pots.

Do not buy products in the form of animals or cars, otherwise they will quickly turn into another toy and the boy will not be able to use them for their intended purpose.

What an inexpensive gift can be given to a 6 Month Boy

A gift for a baby does not have to be expensive. Think about what will cause him positive emotions, and if you can’t decide on your own, then there are other options that you can give the boy for 6 months.

Anti-slip toe stickers. As soon as the boy learns to lean on his legs, the first falls and bumps await him. Get these stickers to keep your little one safe when they take their first hesitant steps.

Socks are a great alternative to slippers, and the child will feel the freedom of movement.

Nibbler. This thing will make life much easier for both mom and baby. Although the product is considered a novelty, in fact, the device was known to our grandmothers and even great-grandmothers.

Simply modern nibbler has an improved design and consists of a rubber handle and a special mesh. Inside it, you can put a piece of any fruit, cookies and not be afraid that the boy will bite off a large piece and choke. A wonderful gift for a six month old boy.

Neck circle for swimming. At first glance, this is an ordinary swim ring, but much smaller. It is securely fixed on the baby’s neck, allowing him to freely move his arms and legs.

Such swimming has a good effect on the health and physical development of the child. Using a circle when bathing will help eliminate muscle tone, teach elementary water movements.

Comforter. This is a toy that was unanimously recognized by pediatricians and child psychologists. It is made from natural materials, such as cotton or bamboo, and helps the baby calm down and fall asleep faster.

Suitable for those families in which mother and child sleep together. Comforter must be placed nearby so that it is saturated with mother’s “native” smell.

Then the boy will fall asleep comfortably in his bed with him. The toy for several years becomes the most beloved. For most children, comforters help to overcome stressful situations, for example, the first days in kindergarten.

Gifts for physical and mental development

It is important for a child to develop harmoniously from all sides, so if you still do not know what gift to give a boy for 6 months, choose our win-win options.

Jumpers. As soon as the baby sits down, he will immediately want to crawl, and even better, master upright posture in order to explore the world and make interesting discoveries.

Jumping will bring many happy moments to both the boy and his parents.

The child is securely fixed in them, pushes off the floor and laughs fervently. But this is not only entertainment, but also a very useful simulator that develops leg muscles and the vestibular apparatus.

Development mat. This is a great play space that includes many useful elements. The rug harmoniously develops the child, stimulates him to active knowledge of the world.

Such a product has a good effect on fine motor skills, which is very important for the formation of speech, color perception, trains vision, attention, memory and hearing.

This toy will keep the boy busy for a long time and give mom a break.

Children’s sports and development complex. This is a significant contribution to the physical development of the child. Now the baby will be most attracted by the swing and the slide, from which he can go down with the help of his parents.

And then the complex can be expanded and a horizontal bar, rings, wall bars and many other necessary elements for active games can be added. But do not forget that the main thing is safety, so the platform must be purchased along with a sports mat.

Bathroom drawing pencils. The kid needs all-round development, so you need to pay attention to creative abilities.

Of course, a six-month-old baby cannot hold a pencil correctly, but he will definitely like bright crayons.

Give him the opportunity to draw on the sides of the bathroom, in this way you will teach him to control his emotions, contribute to the development of aesthetic feelings. The boy will not have the desire to throw out his creative impulses on wallpaper, doors or furniture.

A couple more interesting ideas, What to give a Baby for Six months

Still haven’t chosen what to give a six-month-old baby, then you will definitely like the following ideas (gifts for every taste and budget).

Tree seedling. This is a symbolic and very memorable gift for a half year old boy. In a few years, the seedling will turn into a strong tree, and will continue to grow with the boy.

A gift will be especially successful if the baby’s family lives in their own house or has a summer cottage. Every time a tree gets stronger, the boy will gratefully remember the person who presented this unusual present.

Child faucet attachment. Mostly bright in color and shaped like a scoop. The nozzle is easily fixed on any faucet, its direction can be adjusted.

It will prevent water from splashing in all directions. It is absolutely inexpensive, but it will evoke pleasant emotions in both children and adults.

Warmer toy. The heating pad, made in the form of a funny toy, will not only attract the attention of the boy, but also bring him practical benefits. It is pleasant to touch it, touch it with fingers, smell it.

It warms up perfectly if you first take out a special bag with filler and put it in the microwave for a few minutes. Dry heat is absolutely safe.

The thermal toy can also be filled with soothing herbs such as lemon balm or mint. It will emit a pleasant aroma, which will provide the boy with a sound and healthy sleep.

Baby’s first book, which will record all his first achievements and events. It is impossible to remember the most exciting moments, but they can be recorded or photographed.

Believe me, when the boy grows up, he will be very interested to know how he developed, what he looked like, what skills he acquired in one or another period of his childhood.

How to understand What is better to give a Boy for 6 Months

To make your choice easier, here are some more useful tips. We are sure that they will be very useful to you.

The main mistake of the vast majority of donors is the high price of the gift. Six months, of course, is a round date, but it is better to buy something that is not too expensive.

The baby will grow, and from year to year it will be necessary to come up with something new and unusual. It is nice to give expensive gifts, but it is better to do it when the birthday boy reaches a conscious age.

Children under one year old grow very fast, so if you plan to donate clothes, it is very important not to miscalculate with the size.

Remember, according to etiquette, it is not customary to give things for growth, just ask the parents for the size that will fit the baby.

If you do not have your own children, and therefore the relevant experience, discuss the topic of gifts with friends who have already become happy parents.

So, you will be able to avoid unpleasant situations and please not only the hero of the occasion, but also his parents with a gift.

Give preference to practical gifts, for example, those things that can become your mother’s faithful helpers.

If she is rested and cheerful, then the baby will be happy too. Complete your gift with a small rattle or educational book.

Examples of bad gifts that are better not to give a Boy for six months

At six months, the child is actively exploring the world, so he will be happy with any thing that you put in his hands. But after all, everyone wants not to get into a mess, to be original. There is a category of gifts that are not recommended:

icon-ban Babies are very inquisitive, they will probably want to taste your gift, so never give them clothes or toys with small details. The battery compartment, if any, must be securely closed.

icon-ban Stuffed toys tend to accumulate dust that can harbor mites, other insects and houseplant pollen. It is difficult to take care of such products; it is not always possible to wash them with a washing machine. Fluffy toys can cause allergies in a child, or other serious problems, because most of them are made from synthetic materials.

icon-ban A toy should not frighten a child. You should not pay tribute to fashion and buy noisy and unattractive-looking things. Choose educational, cute and funny toys.

icon-ban Many of the guests will take the easy path and decide to donate clothes. Therefore, give up this idea. The child grows in leaps and bounds and may simply not have time to show off in your outfit.

icon-ban Don’t buy toys that can’t turn off the sound mechanism. The child may be delighted, but the constant noise will distract the parents and in a few days they will get tired of your gift.

icon-ban The body of a child at this age is not adapted to solid food. Children do not need treats such as cookies, candies, nuts, etc. If you want to treat the hero of the occasion with something, ask your mother for permission and advice on what to buy.

Congratulations

Little kids want to be pampered all the time. Where to get gift ideas for a 4, 5, 6 month old baby? It is necessary to build on the age and skills of the baby.

At four months, the little man looks around with curiosity, so bright toys will attract his attention and stimulate the desire to reach for them. A mat for the nursery will allow you to leave the baby on the floor.

Five-month-old peanuts love to travel around the apartment, they don’t want to lie down anymore. A sling or ergo backpack will free mom’s hands, while the baby will always be there.

And in about a month he will start crawling. By this time, plugs for sockets, door stops and locks for cabinets should be purchased. The playpen will be a good gift for a six-month-old butuz.

Useful and practical gifts

Usually complementary foods start at four, five or six months (depending on the outlook of the parents and the health of the baby). So you don’t have to worry about what to give as a gift.

Dishes made of quality materials are always useful: plates with suction cups, drinking bowls, nibblers, cutlery, silicone bibs. Often, babies 4-6 months old are given high chairs.

To prepare healthy meals, the baby really needs helpers – a blender, a double boiler or a slow cooker. Therefore, household appliances will also be a good gift for the baby and his parents.

Educational gifts

id=’d25e1dd2’>

At the age of three to six months, babies already know how to listen carefully and try to participate in conversations themselves.

What to gift?

  • Books with nursery rhymes and jokes
  • A selection of children’s songs or classical music on a CD or flash drive
  • Soft books with rustling pages
  • Soft toys made of different materials for the development of tactile sensations.

Clothing

id=’b1bea2d4’>

By six months, the growth rate of the child decreases slightly, and you can give him clothes without worrying that in a couple of weeks the new thing will become small.

A little man who is learning to crawl should choose comfortable outfits: bodysuits, overalls, slips, strong panties.

In the cold season, a woolen vest, hat or socks will come in handy.

Toys and entertainment

id=’99a4b6d2’>

Gradually, the periods of wakefulness of the baby increase, and there is time for new entertainment.

A four-month-old baby can be delighted with such simple things as socks with bells or soap bubbles that adults blow for him.

A six-month-old will appreciate traditional toys:

1 Tumblers

2 Musical toys

3 soft cubes

4 Rattles

5 Teethers

Mementos

id=’9cdb5612’>

What can be given to keep the first tooth and the first spoonful of porridge in memory for a long time?

1 A new photo album or photo frame set to print pictures of happy moments.

2 Set for impressions of arms or legs. You can make them at different ages and watch your favorite legs grow.

3 Photographer’s certificate to send the whole family to a photo shoot.

Gifts for the future

id=’9c2584ba’>

The whole family is anxiously waiting for each new achievement of the child, so gifts for the future are a common thing.

At three to six months, a baby can receive a rolling toy that will one day help him take his first step.

You can also give a small pedestrian soft slippers, which in the future will teach the baby to wear shoes.

Very soon the little one will be interested in pyramids, tapping games, figures of vegetables, fruits or animals.

You can buy these toys in advance.

The best gift for a girl

id=’12ce5da8’>

What to buy a girl? You can find real girls’ outfits: dresses, skirts, headbands with a bow.

Often a doll is chosen as a gift for a daughter, sister or niece. But buying fantastic characters, of course, is not worth it. The ideal option would be a doll with a proportional body and face.

A toy stroller in a couple of months will help the girl take her first steps.

Young ladies who have enviable hair can buy soft rubber bands with felt bows.

Original gift for a boy

id=’b9c7c196’>

What do they give young people six months old?

Already at this age, you can give your son, brother or nephew a big car: before the little passenger learns to drive in them, he will be able to stomp around the apartment, holding the steering wheel.

Cars and wheelchairs will also be of interest to the boys.

You can make a sports gift: a fitball or a subscription to baby swimming.

And in winter, a sled will be a wonderful gift

Tylenol baby sleep: Reduce Baby’s Fever: How to Treat an Infant’s Fever at Home

How Often, Dose, When to Give

You’ve heard that the teething stage is bad, but is it really? Like, can’t you just give a baby a teether or a cold washcloth and move on?

Well — not always. Sometimes teething pain is bad enough to warrant some medicinal relief — and Tylenol is often considered the go-to option, as it’s generally safe for young babies.

But since teething can last a long time (read: months and months on end), you can’t keep your child on a 24/7 infusion of infant Tylenol. Here’s how to know when to give it to your baby, how to use it safely, and how it stacks up against other pain relief options.

You might not remember what it felt like when your 6-year molars or wisdom teeth came in, but let us assure you: Yes, teething is uncomfortable!

To be clear, it might not cause “pain” in the traditional definition of the word. Some experts think teething causes a dull, achy sensation, or possibly even an itchy one — which is why babies turn to chomping and gnawing during the worst bouts of teething in an attempt to soothe their irritated gums.

Some babies are hardly bothered by teething, while others seem more acutely affected. Either way, it’s reasonable to assume your baby will notice something going on in their mouth — and may not like the feeling.

Since babies can’t tell you how they’re feeling, it can be hard to know if or when they’re in pain. But some common symptoms that your baby isn’t feeling well include:

  • unusual fussiness or irritability
  • extreme clinginess (i.e., not wanting to be put down)
  • difficulty sleeping at naps or bedtime
  • pulling on their ears

Specific to teething woes, you might also notice an increase in the amount of drooling your baby is doing — hello, 10 bibs per day! — along with sore or swollen gums and a desire to chew on everything within reach.

Some parents think teething can cause fevers, but this isn’t quite true: While teething can increase your child’s body temperature a smidge, it shouldn’t cause a true fever like the kind that could occur with illness.

Officially, the makers of Tylenol advise that parents talk with doctors about medicating kids under 2 years old. We concur — but according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), you can use your child’s weight to determine the correct dosage if they’re more than 3 months old.

Since teething typically starts between 4 and 6 months, you can give teething babies Tylenol safely.

You can — and should! — always talk with a doctor about the right dosage for your baby’s weight if they’re under 2 years old. These are the general recommendations about dosing based on weight, which may act as a starting point for the conversation with a doc.

  • Whether you buy an infant or children’s formula, liquid medication, or tablets, all pediatric Tylenol now contains the same strength of medication per dose: 160 milligrams. This standardization simplifies dosing. For liquid medication, which you’ll likely give your baby, this equals 5 milliliters (mL).
  • For infants between 6 and 11 pounds, the typical dosage is 1. 25 mL according to the AAP. The dose increases by about 1.25 mL from there for every 5 pounds in weight.
  • Older babies may be able to take a chewable or dissolvable tablet, but that’s child-dependent. You can give your child liquid medication when they’re any age.
  • You can give your child a new dose every 4 to 6 hours as needed, but you shouldn’t give them more than 5 doses in a 24-hour period, per the AAP.
  • It might be better to use Tylenol for teething relief at night or before long naps to distract your child from their discomfort. During the day, you can try to rely on teethers to distract them from the pain. Talk with your pediatrician about giving your child a dose 1 hour before going to sleep, so it’s working in the full effect by bedtime or naptime.
  • Remember to always use the measuring device that comes with your package of Tylenol. It’s guaranteed to give you an accurate amount of medication. Other devices may not be standardized to Tylenol’s measuring system.

In babies more than 6 months old, Motrin is also an option for teething pain relief. Tylenol is often recommended as the first line of defense since you can give it to younger babies and Motrin may cause an upset stomach in some kids.

Tylenol may be tolerated better by your little one, but there’s no major difference in effectiveness in treating teething pain with either medicine. It just comes down to your baby’s age and how well they respond to the active ingredient.

Wondering what you can do instead of — or along with — giving your baby another dose of Tylenol to help them feel better? There are a few good at-home teething remedies, like:

  • offering them teething toys
  • letting them chew on a cold washcloth or baby toothbrush
  • giving them cool, soft foods to eat, like fruit puree in a mesh feeder (if they’re eating solids)

You can use these at-home remedies as often as necessary, especially if it reduces your need to rely on Tylenol to soothe teething pain. But you should avoid the following remedies to treat your baby’s discomfort, since pediatricians don’t consider these to be safe options:

  • topical teething gels
  • homeopathic teething tablets
  • amber teething necklaces

The good news is you can manage teething pain at home with a combination of natural remedies and over-the-counter (OTC) infant pain relievers after getting a doctor’s advice on dosing. Teething isn’t something that typically requires a pediatrician appointment.

Certainly, you can give your doctor a call for advice if you’re:

  • having a difficult time handling your child’s teething
  • feeling like they need pain relief from Tylenol frequently
  • wondering what you can do to help

It’s also possible there could be something else going on besides teething. So, if your child seems inconsolable, it’s smart to check in with the pediatrician.

Tylenol, with a 160mg/5mL strength and dosed based off of weight, is generally okay for babies. Be sure to ask your doctor for dosing recommendations.

By ResumeCat Editorial Team
Updated June 7, 2023

It’s important to prepare for an interview in order to improve your chances of getting the job. Researching questions beforehand can help you give better answers during the interview. Most interviews will include questions about your personality, qualifications, experience and how well you would fit the job. In this article, we review examples of various babysitter interview questions and sample answers to some of the most common questions.

  • What are your qualifications for babysitting?
  • What are your availability?
  • What are your rates?
  • What are your references?
  • What are your policies for sick days, vacation days, etc.?
  • What are your policies for disciplining children?
  • What would you do in case of an emergency?
  • What are your bedtime routines?
  • What are your policies for dealing with bedwetting, tantrums, etc. ?
  • What are your policies for screen time, internet usage, etc.?
  • What are your policies for food and snacks?
  • What are your first aid and CPR qualifications?
  • What are your policies for dealing with allergies?
  • Do you have any experience with special needs children?

What are your qualifications for babysitting?

The interviewer is trying to determine if the babysitter has the necessary qualifications to do the job. It is important to know if the babysitter has the proper qualifications because it will ensure that the children are being properly cared for.

Example: “I have over five years of experience babysitting children of all ages, from infants to toddlers to school-aged children. I am CPR and First Aid certified, and have a degree in Early Childhood Education. I am patient, reliable, and loving, and I will make sure your child is safe and happy while in my care.”

What are your availability?

The interviewer is asking the babysitter what their availability is to find out if they are able to work the hours that the family needs. It is important to know the babysitter’s availability so that the family can be sure that they will be able to care for their child when they need them.

Example: “I am available Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm.”

What are your rates?

An interviewer would ask “What are your rates?” to a babysitter in order to get an idea of how much the babysitter charges per hour. This is important because it allows the interviewer to determine whether or not the babysitter is within their budget.

Example: “My rates are very reasonable and depend on the number of children, their ages, and the length of time needed. Please contact me for a specific quote.”

What are your references?

The interviewer is trying to get a sense of the babysitter’s character and whether she would be a good fit for the family. It is important to have references who can speak to the babysitter’s work ethic and abilities.

Example: “My references are my previous employers. I can provide you with their contact information so you can get in touch with them to ask about my work ethic and childcare abilities. I am also happy to provide character references from people who know me well.”

What are your policies for sick days, vacation days, etc.?

The interviewer is trying to gauge whether the babysitter is reliable and will show up for work as scheduled. It is important to know the policies for sick days and vacation days so that the family can plan accordingly.

Example: “My policy for sick days is that if the child is sick, I will not come to work. I will also not come to work if I am sick. If the child is sick and I am unable to find a replacement, I will call the parents and let them know that I am not able to come to work. My policy for vacation days is that I will give the parents two weeks notice before I go on vacation. I will also try to find a replacement for myself while I am gone.”

What are your policies for disciplining children?

The interviewer is asking this question to get a sense of how the babysitter would handle disciplinary issues with the children under their care. It is important for the interviewer to know this because they want to make sure that the babysitter would be able to handle any disciplinary issues in a way that is consistent with the parents’ expectations.

Example: “My policies for disciplining children are based on the age, maturity, and behaviour of the child. I believe in using positive reinforcement as much as possible, such as praise, encouragement, and rewards for good behaviour. However, I also believe in using negative reinforcement when necessary, such as time-outs, verbal warnings, and removal of privileges. I always try to use the least amount of force necessary to achieve the desired result.”

What would you do in case of an emergency?

The interviewer is asking this question to gauge the babysitter’s ability to think and act quickly in case of an emergency. This is important because the safety of the children in the babysitter’s care is always the top priority.

Example: “If there was an emergency, I would first call 911. Then, I would comfort the child and try to keep them calm. I would also follow any instructions from the dispatcher.”

What are your bedtime routines?

The interviewer is trying to gauge whether the babysitter is someone who is able to stick to a set routine. This is important because having a set bedtime routine for children is often key in getting them to sleep through the night.

Example: “My bedtime routine is pretty simple. I usually take a shower and then brush my teeth. I then put on my pajamas and climb into bed. I read for a little while before turning off the light and going to sleep.”

What are your policies for dealing with bedwetting, tantrums, etc.?

The interviewer is asking this question to gauge the babysitter’s level of experience and expertise in dealing with common childhood behaviors. It is important to know how the babysitter will handle these situations in order to ensure that the children are being cared for in a safe and effective manner.

Example: “My policies for dealing with bedwetting, tantrums, etc. are as follows:

For bedwetting, I will work with the child to help them overcome it. I will talk to them about what may be causing it and help them to come up with a plan to overcome it. I will be supportive and understanding, and help them to feel comfortable and confident about overcoming this issue.

For tantrums, I will try to defuse the situation and help the child to calm down. I will talk to them about what is causing the tantrum and help them to find a way to express their feelings in a more positive way. I will also help them to understand that tantrums are not an effective way of getting what they want.”

What are your policies for screen time, internet usage, etc.?

The interviewer is asking about the babysitter’s policies for screen time and internet usage because it is important to know how the babysitter will manage these activities when caring for children. Screen time and internet usage can be a source of conflict for families, so it is important to know how the babysitter will handle these situations.

Example: “Our policy is that children under the age of 12 should not be allowed to use screens for more than two hours per day. For children over the age of 12, we believe that screen time should be limited to no more than four hours per day. We also believe that internet usage should be supervised at all times, and that parents should have the final say in what websites their children are allowed to visit.”

What are your policies for food and snacks?

The interviewer is likely asking this question to get a sense of the babysitter’s food policies to ensure they are aligned with the family’s own policies. It is important to know the babysitter’s food policies because it can impact the health and well-being of the children in their care. For example, if the babysitter does not allow any snacks, the children may become hungry and cranky. On the other hand, if the babysitter allows sugary snacks, the children may become hyperactive. Therefore, it is important for the interviewer to understand the babysitter’s food policies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children.

Example: “I believe that it is important to provide healthy food options for children. I always have a variety of healthy snacks available for children in my care. I also offer water and milk as drink options. If the parents request that their child have a specific snack or drink, I will of course accommodate this.”

What are your first aid and CPR qualifications?

There are a few reasons an interviewer might ask about first aid and CPR qualifications for a babysitter. One reason is that they want to be sure the babysitter is prepared to handle any minor injuries or health issues that may come up. Another reason is that they want to be sure the babysitter is prepared to handle a more serious emergency, such as a choking incident or a seizure. CPR training can be the difference between life and death in these situations, so it is important for babysitters to have this qualification.

Example: “I am certified in both first aid and CPR. I have my certification through the American Red Cross.”

What are your policies for dealing with allergies?

An interviewer might ask this question to a babysitter in order to get a sense of how the babysitter would deal with a situation in which a child under their care had an allergy. It is important for the interviewer to know how the babysitter would handle such a situation so that they can gauge whether or not the babysitter would be a good fit for the job.

Example: “I have a few policies for dealing with allergies that I think are important. First, I always make sure to ask the parents about any allergies their child has before I babysit. This way, I can be prepared and have any necessary medication on hand. Secondly, I always keep the child’s environment as clean as possible to minimize their exposure to allergens. Lastly, if the child does have a reaction, I am trained in CPR and first aid and will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure their safety.”

Do you have any experience with special needs children?

The interviewer is asking this question to find out if the babysitter has the necessary skills and experience to care for a child with special needs. This is important because children with special needs often require special care and attention.

Example: “Yes, I have experience with special needs children. I have worked as a babysitter for a family with a child who has autism for two years. I am also a certified special education teacher. In my experience, I have found that children with special needs require a lot of patience, understanding, and creativity. I am confident in my ability to provide the care and support that these children need.”

If you need a nanny to live in your area, ask where you live first. An important and first issue may also be the citizenship of the nanny, registration in your city, experience working with children of the appropriate age.

Sample list of questions for a telephone conversation with a nanny

1. What area do you live in?
2. Do you have experience with children 2 years old? If so, which one?
3. Do you have references from the families where you worked? Can you provide them?
4. Are you satisfied with our work schedule?
5. How much do you want to receive per hour, per month?
6. Can you work weekends sometimes?
7. Do you know how to cook baby food?
8. Are you sometimes ready to work in the presence of the child’s grandmother?
9. Can you start work soon?

The list is very approximate, your questions may be different. Order the questions, that is, first of all, ask about what is paramount to you, then questions in descending order of importance. When talking with each candidate, put pluses or minuses. If the answer to the first question does not suit you, end the conversation and say goodbye, do not waste either your own or someone else’s time. Do not forget to write down the coordinates of the nannies who have gained a lot of pluses in order to schedule a personal meeting later.
The same conversation pattern applies if you find suitable nanny candidates online. Carefully analyze their resumes or ads, weed out inappropriate ones, contact the rest and ask questions that are important to you.
Each family has its own situation, so everyone will have their own list of questions for the nanny. There is one more important point in a telephone conversation: if for some reason you did not like the interlocutor during the conversation, despite the positive answers, do not invite this person. Especially if it becomes clear that the style of the conversation does not match the content of the answers. For example, if a lady with a higher education (according to her) has an extremely limited vocabulary and uses expressions like “weigh the favors.” Read more advice on choosing a nanny

You have decided to go to work, and you are faced with a difficult task – to find a nanny for your baby. In order for the selected candidate to meet all your expectations, and you would be calm for the health and life of your child, leaving him with a stranger, you need to conduct an interview for the future nanny.

Together with your spouse, identify the qualities that your babysitter should have and make up your own questions with preferred answers based on them.

What could this list be?

If pedagogical education is fundamental for you, put it as the first item, if not, do not pay attention to it. For someone, the age of the nanny and the place of residence are important – closer to the family, for someone the absence of bad habits and their own children, so that the nanny does not ask for sick leave. First of all, you need to rely on your own preferences!

Olesya Garanina

educational psychologist

First of all, you should like the appearance of the nanny. As well as the timbre of the voice and the manner of communicating. If a person is unpleasant for you, it is worth talking with another candidate.

• Nanny should be a positive and optimistic person.

Ask her: in your opinion, why do children act up and cry? And why are they messing around? Why do they play pranks over food, spit porridge and do not want to eat at all?

A person who is unfriendly towards children will most likely answer that they are simply spoiled, they lack a firm hand, perhaps even punishments, there is no respect for parents. The nanny, in an indifferent mood, will say something like: well, it happens, it’s a common thing for children to indulge.

The most acceptable answer is to look for reasons: perhaps the child is tired or sick . Or maybe he didn’t get enough sleep or he just doesn’t like porridge?

• The nanny has to do two or three things at once.

Keeping track of a child is not easy, because at the same time you have to perform several actions – put away toys, cook something, read, take a walk.

Ask: when you cook dinner, do you do each dish in turn or several at once? A similar question may be about ironing clothes and watching a TV series. The main thing is to find out if a person is comfortable when doing several things at the same time.

• The person who will be with your child for several hours a day should be honest with you about falls and bruises.

And if such a nuisance, unfortunately, happens, he will tell about the incident. Unfortunately, no one is immune from mistakes. But it is very valuable when the nanny knows how to take responsibility for them.

Ask: did you have any mistakes/failures in your previous family? For what reason?

The ideal answer would be one in which babysitting applicant will be honest about the gaffes. It is hardly true to say that there have never been any misses.

• Your little one will feel comfortable or even happy to stay with a nanny.

Not the most successful criterion for evaluating a nanny is your child’s attitude towards her at the first meeting. A contact and sociable baby can easily sit in the arms of an unfamiliar adult. And the anxious one, or the one who needs a little more time to adapt to a new person, will not immediately go into his hands.

It is also important whether the nanny herself is determined to receive feedback from the child, even if it is still very small. Or is it simply important for her to formally fulfill her duties?

Ask: do you think you are a good babysitter? Do kids love you? How do you understand it?

It’s great if the answer contains words that reflect both the opinion of the parents themselves (“The parents praise me, ask me to extend the term of work”) and the attitude of the child (“The children trust me. They are happy when I come, and in the evening they ask me to stay longer”) and objective signs (“I taught the child to use the potty. With me, he himself learned to dress, eat, read”).

• The nanny’s worldview and values should match yours.

This is important, because while you are at work, it is she who will form an idea of the world around your child. Of course, this formation will not be as significant as yours, but it will be.

Ask: to find out about the nanny’s attitude, ask her those questions, the answers to which you consider fundamental. Focus on your preferences. My acquaintances refused to recommend the nanny because she was watching a television program that they did not approve of.

• A nanny should come to your family with joy and do an interesting and favorite thing, and not babysit the baby from the impossibility of finding another job.

Ask: what attracts her in this particular job? Why did you choose her?

Well, if the answer lists the reasons why the nanny likes her work, the motivation is explained.

Example: “I have over five years of experience babysitting children of all ages, from infants to toddlers to school-aged children.

14 Must-Ask Questions for Your New Babysitter

THIS:

Interviewing for a new after-school sitter or nanny for the school year? It’s important to determine the right questions to ask to find the right fit for your family.  It has been said that finding a great babysitter is as much intuition as it is qualification. But whether you’re hiring a sitter for one Saturday night or a nanny for (hopefully) years to come, it’s important to have a detailed discussion about the care of your child.

Here is a handy list of key interview questions to ask that will make everyone – you, your sitter and your kids – feel more at ease!

1. What is your childcare background?

2. Do you have children of your own, nieces or nephews, godchildren, or young cousins?

3. Do you envision yourself doing this for a long period of time or just in the near future?

4. What do you think is the best form of discipline for a baby, toddler, grade-school child?

5. Do you believe tidying the house is part of your job?

6. How much do you charge and how does that relate to your experience?

7. Do you do overnights? How much do you charge for that?

8. Are you comfortable driving? Taking walks in the stroller? Going to the park, library, local cafe?

9. Do you have any current health issues that might prevent you from caring properly for my children?

10. Have you been formally trained in CPR?

11. Can you give me an example of an activity you might do with my children? (art project, hide and seek, board game, etc.)

12. Under what circumstances would you call me?

13. Under what circumstances would you call 911?

14. What do you expect from me as a parent?

nannies, carers and housekeepers!

People who are interested in your ad start calling you, ready to get a job as a nanny in your family. You need a list of questions that you will ask your interlocutors on the phone.
Think about what is most important to you, and ask this question first to immediately weed out those who obviously do not suit you. So what to ask?

  • Nanny Interview

When hiring a nanny for a child, parents want to be sure that they will make the right choice, because they entrust the most precious thing to a stranger.

05 Jun 2023

Author:

Olesya Garanina

IN HOUSTON – Our Texas – Russian Newspaper in Houston, Dallas, San-Antonio, Austin, Texas

WASTE DELIVERY DUE TO TRAIN DECLINE IN OHIO

Politicians protested in Houston last week when news broke that that hazardous waste from East Palestine, Ohio, is sent to their city for disposal.

Trucks transported toxic wastewater over 1,300 miles from eastern Ohio to be buried at the Texas Molecular plant in Dear Park, on the outskirts of Greater Houston.

Officials issued statements that the public should have been warned, prompting the Environmental Protection Agency to order a Feb. rails and caught fire.

On February 27, waste shipments resumed, but only to facilities in Ohio.

Despite the outrage, the railroad operator did nothing unusual by sending their waste across the country to Houston. Houston, with a population of 7.2 million, is home to a large industrial sector on the Gulf of Mexico, making it the nation’s energy and petrochemical capital, as well as one of the best places to pump hazardous waste deep underground.

“It’s no wonder the sewage from the Ohio train derailment ends up here,” said Sema Hernandez, a 37-year-old mother of four and environmentalist from Houston’s Pasadena neighborhood, which neighbors Dear Park. “No one cares what happens in our neighborhood as long as it doesn’t affect richer communities.”

Not all railroad accident waste from Ohio arrived in Houston. According to news reports, some of the toxic sewage, containing unburned residues of spilled chemicals mixed with firefighting foam, was pumped into Ohio, and some was pumped into Michigan. But the largest volume was on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas and Louisiana contain the majority of hazardous waste disposal wells, according to the US Environmental Agency. Only eight other states have such wells. Most are privately owned and do not accept third party waste, but a few commercial wells, such as the Dear Park well, accept third party waste.

ABOUT HISD’S IMPENDING ACQUISITION

From the Texas Capitol to the Houston City Council, politicians say the Texas Education Agency will take over Houston’s Independent School District within days.

Mayor Sylvester Turner says the looming takeover could happen as early as next week.

While the takeover is largely a bureaucratic move at the highest levels of the district, the move could affect students and staff if schools are closed or converted to charter schools, critics say.

There are over 196,000 students in the district.

“It worries me a lot,” says Turner. How do you go in and take over the largest school district in the state of Texas? How do you do it and do it successfully?”

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) initially tried to take over in 2019 due to poor test scores at several district schools. The school district opposed the move and sued the agency in 2020.

The case went all the way to the Texas Supreme Court, and in January of this year, judges sided with TEA, clearing the way for state-appointed managers to replace elected school board members.

State-appointed managers will have tremendous power. They can control the budget, school closures, partnerships with charter networks, curriculum and library book policies, and hire or fire a superintendent, among other important decisions.

Members of the Community of Houston for Community Education (CVPE) have long been protesting the takeover.

In response to Turner’s comment, a TEA spokesman did not confirm whether the takeover would take place next week. “TEA continues to review the Supreme Court’s decision to determine the next steps that will best support students, teachers, parents, and the Houston Independent School District school community,” TEA said in a statement.

DISCOVERY GREEN RECEIVED A $2 MILLION GIFT

Houston’s iconic city park that has transformed downtown has received a special gift to ensure the green spaces are preserved for future generations.

The Kinder Foundation donated $2 million to the Discovery Green Conservancy to create a fund for the 12-acre park.

Before Discovery Green was conceived in 2008, the site contained two underutilized surface car parks. The park has served as a catalyst for change in the region, reimagining public park spaces and generating more than $1.8 billion in development funds within a two-block radius.

The park has also rethought building types leading to the creation of so-called 20-minute blocks that provide walking distance.

Today, millions of visitors from near and far come to Discovery Green to enjoy the green oasis, art installations, events, restaurants and more. The George R. Brown Convention Center, Hilton Americas, Marriot Marquis, and the Avenida Houston entertainment district contribute to the area’s success.

Access to green space in downtown Houston has expanded over the years, proving that leaders, developers and the community understand how important they are to our personal health and the health of our economy.

THE BAD SIDE OF HOUSTON SPRING

Spring has just arrived, and Houston allergy sufferers are sneezing everywhere.

Baylor College of Medicine doctors say pollen counts in Bayou remain high due to warmer winters.

Tree pollen saturation has been classified as “extremely severe” by the Houston Department of Health for the past week.

And the concentration of weed pollen, field grasses and mold spores was at an average level.

Living in Houston means living with allergies all year round. Herbs pollinate in spring, trees and weeds in summer and fall, and mountain cedar in winter, according to a Baylor College of Medicine spokesman. So as long as the weather remains unseasonably warm, no matter the time of year, there will be allergens in the air.

To relieve symptoms, doctors recommend over-the-counter allergy medications or nasal sprays.

Also try using a nasal washer (neti pot) and consider wearing a mask outdoors – a surgical grade mask can block some of the larger pollen.

CHICKEN IN SPRING

Soaring egg prices, coupled with the desire for greater food security, are driving more Houstonians to raise their own laying hens in their yards.

Interest in backyard chickens in Houston skyrocketed at the start of the pandemic when people panicked when they saw empty food shelves. Chicken owner Brett Chisholm said that in 2020, the Houston Area Backyard Chickens Facebook group he oversees has grown rapidly from under 2,000 to over 3,000 people.

Now there are about 8000 members in the group. According to Chisholm, about half of the people in the group have chickens, and the other half are about to get them.

Owning chickens can have several advantages – excellent egg quality, a direct food source, plus they are pretty cute pets.

There are also disadvantages: raising chickens can be associated with the cost of eggs. Having chickens will not be cost effective if you don’t plan on doing so for a long time, as the cost of coops, feed, fencing, and general supplies can go up.

Hens start laying eggs at 18 to 22 weeks of age, so this is not a quick return on investment.

Note: Houston allows residents to have up to 30 chickens (as long as they are kept clean and at least 100 feet from nearby residences, schools, hospitals, or churches), but many homeowners associations do not allow chickens.

OUR PARENTS ARE LUCKY WITH NANNY PRICES

Houston parents, rejoice. Babysitting rates in the city have gone down, while in the rest of the country they have gone up.

In 2022, babysitting rates for single child care fell by 3% in Houston, according to a survey conducted by carer search platform UrbanSitter. Even more – by 17% – for two children.

Last year, the average babysitting rate on UrbanSitter in Houston was $17.84 per hour for one child and $18.77 for two. In 2021, it was $18.39for one child and $22.73 for two.

Nationally, single babysitting rates rose 9.7% to $22.68 an hour, slightly less than the 11% increase seen in 2021 but still outpacing inflation for the second year in a row.

Many teachers, nurses and early childhood professionals have taken to babysitting during the pandemic and raised babysitting prices due to their experience.

But many people in Houston are now gone, which is probably why the average rate has dropped, says UrbanSitter founder and CEO Lynn Perkins. Perkins also notes that there are many nannies and carers in the Houston area, which means lower rates.

HOUSTON’S ENERGY SYMBOL WILL BE A HOUSE

A vacant downtown skyscraper, a reminder that Houston is the energy capital of the world, may soon revive the trend of living in you acres in downtown. The tower, formerly known as the headquarters of Humble Oil and now the Exxon building (800 Bell St.), was sold to an out-of-state developer who
plans to convert it into a residential building. The 1.2 million square foot building was sold to a New York
investment group associated with CMI Developers. It is noteworthy that the group has experience in the historical reconstruction and redevelopment of apartments. The age of the Exxon building (it was completed in 1962) and its high 90,331 local prominence may provide property developers with historic preservation tax credits. As residents of the city remember, Exxon’s former headquarters at 800 Bell lasted for about eight years when the company moved into a new modern complex. Culturally, the building was of great importance as
Houston’s towering energy status symbol. At the time of opening, the building was considered the tallest west of the Mississippi River. Its famous Oil Club on the top floor was the site of countless 90,331 deals and later special events. Looking ahead, the building provides numerous opportunities for
adaptive reuse. Once open to neighbors who used the Exxon cafeteria, the ground floors of the building could be the perfect multifunctional space for restaurants and even shops. It is to be hoped that the building’s signature fins, designed to protect against the hot Houston sun, will remain a design feature.

14 Babysitter Interview Questions (With Example Answers)

You have decided to go to work, and you are faced with a difficult task – to find a nanny for your baby. In order for the selected candidate to meet all your expectations, and you would be calm for the health and life of your child, leaving him with a stranger, you need to conduct an interview for the future nanny.

Together with your spouse, identify the qualities that your babysitter should have and create your own questions with your preferred answers based on them.

• The nanny should be a positive and optimistic person.

The ideal answer would be one in which nanny applicant will be honest about gaffes.

They are happy when I come, and in the evening they ask to stay longer”) and objective signs (“I taught the child to use the potty.

Worse, if it’s just a forced measure or a way to earn money.

When interviewing, remember that Nothing is perfect in nature, and the nanny cannot be your exact copy. Focus on what really matters to you and your baby.

People who are interested in your ad start calling you, ready to get a job as a nanny in your family. You need a list of questions that you will ask your interlocutors on the phone.
Think about what is most important to you, and ask this question first to immediately weed out those who obviously do not suit you. So what to ask?

The list is very approximate, your questions may vary.

Austin, TX

I am a babysitter at babysitting connection. It is such a healthy workplace here! Management respects my school schedule, and there is plenty of flexibility.  As well, I always feel safe on my sits and even look forward to meeting families.

There have been some genuinely memorable experiences on the job exploring all of the pockets and people of Austin. I definitely recommend working here!”

Raheena A.

San Antonio, TX

I absolutely love working here. I started when I was in college and then kept doing it after I graduated (part time) because it is just so fun to play with kids and get paid on my own time.

The management is also spectacular. They are always willing to hear us out and they set clear expectations on both ends to do their best to make everybody happy. I’ve been with Babysitter Connection for over a year now and I am so glad I joined in the first place.

Babysitting Connection is great! They really care about their sitters and I have a lot of fun working for them. I love how easy it is to create my own schedule and find members close to me!

Kendall B.

Neodymium magnets (or “Rare Earth”) have an inherent risk associated with them. However these magnets have been evaluated and passed by our stringent safety and quality control tests. There is no risk of a magnet being exposed to a persons skin (there is also no known benefit either!).

We caution those with electronic medical implants and pacemakers to keep their distance from raw magnetic materials. Please consult your physician before purchasing. Contact [email protected] if you have any question about this.

We’ve found no problem using Apple or Android devices while resting on top of a FORT! A magnet can potentially wipe a credit card or ID badge, so it’s best to keep those away from magnets.

The FORT is made from an polyurethane foam and polyurethane leather (PU). The magnets are neodymium magnets. Our materials pass or exceed all US safety tests making them safe for children.

10 kids indoor fort ideas to transform your living room

I grew up in a technologically dark yet neon lit time known as the ‘80s. There were no streaming services, phones were chained to walls and Facetime involved looking at someone’s actual, physical and in-person face. Instead of relying on Netflix or PlayStation for entertainment, we had to make our own unstructured fun by ourselves. Fun required imagination, creativity, a slew of comfy couch cushions and free reign over the linen closet. That’s right — this was the golden age of the play fort.

With just a few king-sized sheets here and two arms full of couch cushions there, we could construct an elaborate fort complete with a kitchen, parlor and garage. I’m not saying we were any match for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but they probably would’ve been pretty impressed with what we came up with.

Forts may look like a few pieces of fabric draped over mounds of stuff, but really they are the blueprints of some pretty important life skills. In one afternoon we had utilized important components of STEM, honed our teamwork talents, harnessed the power of our imaginations, fine-tuned our decision-making abilities and identified ways to work through obstacles and frustrations.

Times may have changed, but the fun and the benefits of this indoor playtime classic remain the same. Here are some fort-tastic options to help your kid build the coolest fort in the living room.

Best kids indoor forts, according to shoppers

The Nugget

Don’t want your kids to dismantle your couch? Give them a couch of their own! The Nugget couch comes with four foam and machine-washable pieces and is available in a slew of vibrant colors.

Foamnasium Pillar Builders

Made with love out of Greenfield, IN, Foamnasium has a plethora of foam and vinyl options to inspire imaginative and active play. The Foamnasium Pillar Builders includes four vinyl and easy to clean/disinfect pillars and one base, features non-skid ends and is available in nine fun colors. Plus, a portion of each purchase benefits Mwana Villages, an organization which provides refuge within orphanhood to vulnerable children and families.

Melissa and Doug Firetruck Play Tent

Allow your child’s curiosity to catch fire with this fun and imaginative play tent. It’s not only a great starter fort for little kids who have more imagination than motor skills, but it’s roomy enough for multiple children and fun enough for one.

Sarah’s Silks Play Clips

There are few things more devastating than putting the finishing touches on your fort mansion, only to watch in horror as a sheet falls to the ground. Avoid destruction and tears with these easy-to-use wooden play clips. Available in packages of one, two and four, the fort and the fun are never-ending with these child-friendly clips.

The Original TOTE A FORT Blanket Fort Kit

Who’s ready for 150 square feet of fort fun? Everyone! This thoughtful fort kit comes with everything your child needs to build a fort in the living room, in their bedroom or underneath the dining room table. The fort kit includes six colorful fort blankets made with kid-friendly breathable fabric. Plus, each blanket features velcro straps and patches, perfect for easy construction and demolition.

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Jumbo Cardboard Blocks

If every good fort needs a solid foundation, 40 sturdy and colorful cardboard boxes should do the trick! Lightweight and easy for kids to carry, these blocks will provide hours of supported and imaginative play.

AirFort UFO

For out-of-this-world fort fun, look no further. This fort is less about construction and all about imagination. With just a standard box fan, your child’s UFO AirFort will inflate in 30 seconds. A hit for an afternoon playdate or a slumber party, this fort is ready for takeoff!

HearthSong Cabin Fantasy Fort

If your child has always wanted their own life-size log cabin, then their dreams are about to come true. This 32-piece kit includes faux wood panels, velcro connectors and building clips for two-story fort builds. As an added bonus, this kit also cleans and organizes itself. Just take six of the faux panels and — wham! — a storage cube! Good for outdoor and indoor fort building fun, this option’s designed for kids ages 4 and up.

Fort Magic Kit

Let your child’s imagination and skills run wild with this limitless fort kit. Winner of nine educational STEM toy awards, this kit allows for boundless creativity and designs. Build a car, a submarine, a rocket, a horse and carriage and much, much more! With 354 fort-ifying pieces, this kit is great for hours of fun for kids ages 6 ½ and up.

The Viking Fortress is the perfect playground for a large family. Enough space for everyone! A huge number of games and a lot of space for boys and girls.

Tower, house, walking stick, sandbox, play table, climbing wall, captain’s bridge, 3 swings and more – isn’t it the perfect set?

Children’s Village Viking Fortress is the most popular choice for families with several children! This is understandable, because there are so many places for games and even a house under the tower!
