My name’s Alessandra 🙂 I love the outdoors, music and cooking up my own healthy recipes! I enjoy babysitting and nannying because it’s refreshing for me to be around young kids. I think we could all use thoseyouthful, vibrant energies in our lives as often as possible and I genuinely have fun entertaining and playing with them (my background in Theater helps with this.) I think it’s important for any child to stay active and spend time outside. I grew up in an area with a lot of land in Maryland, so I was always exploring the outdoors. I have previous experience babysitting for various families, as well as knowledge of handling any emergency situations. I have a severe peanut allergy, so I also know how to use an Epi-Pen….

Previously I worked with another family full time with four precious girls, including 3mo twins, and three years for a summer childcare program that cared for children in grades K-8. My jobs as a nanny have included everything from overnight sitting to activity planning to household chores. I have experience with children of all ages including special needs and health concerns, and with elderly care. I’m a non-smoker, comfortable watching sick kids, and love animals! After all, parents are people too, and, oddly enough, they have desires, in addition to changing diapers, to just sit with friends in the hotel restaurant and celebrate the New Year 2017 (while the baby is sleeping) or do household chores by putting the stroller with the child on the terrace. There are still a lot of cases when you need to leave the baby, but be completely sure that everything is in order with him.

Many of us go with our children to summer cottages, to the sea or just for weekend picnics. For many parents, take a baby monitor or baby monitor rent may be more profitable than buying it.

If in a normal situation when you are at home with a child, a baby monitor is not really needed, but when you find yourself with the kids in a completely new environment that is unusual for both you and your child, having a baby monitor at hand, or better a video baby monitor – turns out to be pretty good.

In summer, children are often left outside for daytime naps in the garden or summerhouse. And mom always needs to be aware of how the baby sleeps in the stroller. Here the baby monitor will “tell” you about it.

how to hire a nanny in Thailand

If your family grows up a baby, and you decide to go to Thailand (on vacation or for a long time), one of the important issues that you have to decide will be finding a nanny. How to find a reliable person who will please not only you, but also your child, and what you should pay attention to when choosing a nanny, read in our material.

Where can I find a nanny?

All loving parents who have to entrust their child to a nanny ask the same question: where to find a responsible person who deserves their trust? There are several ways to solve this difficult task.

First, you can communicate with other families who live in Thailand and use the services of a babysitter. You can find them through friends or on expat forums on the Internet. Word of mouth is one of the most reliable sources, because they will recommend you a trusted person who has a positive experience of communicating with children.

Secondly, you can contact an agency that will select a specialist according to your criteria, or find a nanny through specialized sites, such as thaikidshome.com or greataupair.com. And, thirdly, you can join special groups on social networks (Facebook or VKontakte), where you can find not only a nanny, but also reviews about her work.

What to look for when choosing a nanny?

When choosing a nanny in Thailand, you should pay attention, first of all, to her human qualities, education, experience with children and recommendations from past employers. You also have the right to ask the nanny for the original documents to make sure of her reliability.

In addition, you have to decide which nanny to choose – Thai, Filipina or Russian. Consider the features of each option.

Thais generally do not speak English well, so it may be difficult for the nanny to communicate with you and your child. A Thai nanny may not understand some of the nuances, and the baby will not learn the language. But at the same time, it should be borne in mind that Thais are very fond of babysitting children and are serious about the constancy of work.

Filipinos, unlike Thais, speak English well, so they ask for more money for their work. As a bonus, they will most likely help you around the house: cook, clean.

With Russian nannies, neither you nor your child will have a language barrier – this is their main advantage. In addition, reviews of a Russian nanny abroad spread quickly. But our compatriots, as a rule, take more money for their work.

Issue price

You can hire a nanny in Thailand both for a few hours and for permanent work. On average, her labor will cost 300 baht per hour for one child, plus 100 baht per hour for the second child if paid by the hour.

If you hire a nanny on a permanent basis, then her work will cost you an average of 9-10 thousand baht for a 6-day work week with a 10-hour workday. If there are two children, then the payment will increase by approximately 2,000 baht. This amount includes child care and cooking for him.

As we noted earlier, the work of a Thai nanny will be the cheapest, but Filipinas and Russians will cost more.

If you decide to take your child to Thailand for the winter or on vacation, you can be sure that you can find a reliable assistant in the form of a nanny here.

With your two-year-old’s blossoming language and social skills, they’re ready to become an active mealtime participant. They should no longer be drinking from a bottle, and can eat the same food as the rest of the family. Their diet should now include three healthy meals a day, plus one or two snacks.

Here are some tips to help your little one develop healthy, safe eating habits and get the nutrition their growing bodies need.

Mealtime tips for toddlers

  • Try not to fixate on amounts of food they are eating.

  • Avoid making mealtimes a battle.

  • Pay attention to adopting healthy eating habits—including sitting as a family at mealtime.

  • Focus on making healthy food choices as a family.

Unsafe foods for toddlers: choking risks

At two years old, your child should be able to use a spoon, drink from a cup with just one hand, and feed themselves a wide variety of finger foods. However, they are still learning to chew and swallow efficiently and may gulp food down when in a hurry to get on with playing. For that reason, the risk of choking at this age is high.

Avoid these foods, which could be swallowed whole and block the windpipe:

  • Hot dogs (unless cut in quarters lengthwise before being sliced)

  • Chunks of peanut butter (Peanut butter may be spread thinly on bread or a cracker, but never give chunks of peanut butter to a toddler.)

  • Nuts—especially peanuts

  • Raw cherries with pits

  • Round, hard candies—including jelly beans

  • Gum

  • Whole grapes

  • Marshmallows

  • Raw carrots, celery, green beans

  • Popcorn

  • Seeds—such as processed pumpkin or sunflower seeds

  • Whole grapes, cherry tomatoes (cut them in quarters)

  • Large chunks of any food such as meat, potatoes, or raw vegetables and fruits

The best foods for toddlers include:

  • Protein foods like meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds and soy

  • Dairy such as milk, yogurt, cheese or calcium-fortified soymilk

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Grains such as whole wheat bread and oatmeal

It is normal for toddlers to choose from a limited number of foods, reject foods entirely, and then change their preferences over time. Never force your child to eat something they do not want to eat. The best approach is to let your child to choose from 2 to 3 healthy options, and continue to offer new foods as their tastes change.

Offering a variety of foods and leaving the choices up to your child will eventually allow them to eat a balanced diet on their own. Toddlers also like to feed themselves. So, whenever possible, offer your child finger foods instead of cooked ones that require a fork or spoon to eat.

Supplements for some children

Vitamin supplements are rarely necessary for toddlers who eat a varied diet, with a few exceptions.

Vitamin D. Infants under 12 months of age require 400 International Units (IU) of vitamin D per day and older children and adolescents require 600 IU per day. This amount of vitamin D can prevent rickets—a condition characterized by the softening and weakening of bones. If your child is not regularly exposed to sunlight or is consuming enough vitamin D in their diet, talk to your pediatrician about a vitamin D supplement. See Vitamin D for Babies, Children & Adolescents for more information and a list of vitamin D-enriched foods.

Iron. Supplemental iron may be needed if your child eats very little meat, iron-fortified cereal, or vegetables rich in iron. Large quantities of milk (more than 32 ounces [960 mL] per day) also may interfere with the proper absorption of iron, increasing the risk of iron deficiency anemia.

Calcium. Your child should drink 16 ounces (480 mL) of low-fat or nonfat milk each day. This will provide most of the calcium they need for bone growth and still not interfere with their appetite for other foods—particularly those that provide iron.

Note: Children stay on whole milk until they are two years of age—unless there is a reason to switch a baby to low-fat milk sooner. Whole milk contains approximately 4% milk fat. It may help to gradually switch your child from whole milk to a lower-fat milk. Therefore, many pediatricians recommend that children get reduced fat (2%) milk for a few weeks before switching them to low fat (1%) or no fat (skim) milk.

Healthy Foods for 2 Year Old Child Along with Recipes

Food habits change rapidly as your infant grows. Within the first two years, your baby will have begun teething, moved on to solid foods, and more or less integrated with family mealtimes. Here is a food chart, as well as some recipes on how to integrate healthy eating habits in your child and include good, wholesome and nutritious food in his diet.

How Does Your Toddler’s Meal Time Change?

Your child will have begun eating solid foods as he starts teething. Kids this age are impatient and even fussy around mealtimes. At one and a half years (18 months), toddlers usually manage to handle a spoon to feed themselves. By 24 months, your child will have joined the grown-ups table as a regular!

Some Useful Steps to Form Good Eating Habits in Your Child

A toddler’s eating habits and tastes are only being established as he first starts eating solid foods. This is the time when parents should strive to build a healthy eating habit.

  • Delay your child’s introduction to fast food and sweetened aerated drinks, and help build a preference for fresh, wholesome food.
  • Stick to strict meal timings. Establishing a routine will lead to your child developing a fixed mealtime by getting hungry at the right time.
  • Do not feed your child heavy snacks or lots of liquid rights before mealtime.
  • Each meal should last for 20 minutes and no longer.

Food for a 2-Year-Old Baby

While a balanced diet is essential for us, children need a boost of nourishment that helps them grow.

1. Dairy Products

Milk, yoghurt, and paneer are all rich in calcium. Calcium helps build strong bones. In case your child is lactose intolerant, he may need to take calcium from other sources like nuts and pulses to make up for a gap in the calcium intake.

2. Chicken

Chicken and other non-vegetarian foods contain good quantities of easily absorbable iron and protein. Iron helps power haemoglobin in the blood and prevents anaemia. Iron found in vegetarian food is harder for the body to absorb and, hence, your child will need to consume at least twice as much of it to get the required amount.

3. Fish

Fish is a good source of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). EFAs help builds immunity and strengthens the cardiovascular system. Vegetarians will need proper substitution of EFA sources, as it is not produced in the body and can only be gained externally.

4. Healthy Oils

Flaxseeds, walnuts, soybeans, and other nuts and their oil contain reasonable amounts of EFAs and minerals.

5. Carrots

Carrots are famous as a rich source of Vitamin A. Spinach, kale, and other vegetables also contain high levels of Vitamin A. It is essential to include foods rich in different vitamins in your child’s diet. Vitamin A helps in boosting eyesight and immunity.

6. Citrus Fruits

Lemons and oranges are renowned for their Vitamin C content. Deficiency of Vitamin C can lead to serious diseases like scurvy. Vitamin C helps in strengthening gums and blood vessels and recovering from bruises. Guavas, mangos, bananas, tomatoes, and spinach also contain Vitamin C.

7. Sunshine

Although this isn’t technically a food, it is something the body absorbs. Hence, it is included in this list, considering the integral role it plays in growth. The element we gain from sunshine is Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for a child to achieve his maximum growth potential. Foods that contain Vitamin D are fish and dairy products.

8. Bananas

Magnesium and potassium, are essential elements for cardiac health, and muscle condition, and are found in bananas. Incorporate this beneficial fruit into cereals and other foods to make it a staple.

Feeding Tips

  • While providing healthy food for 2-year-old baby do not fixate on the amounts eaten. This will change from child to child and between different days and mealtimes.
  • A 2-year-old toddler’s food requirement does not have to include artificial supplements.
  • Indian baby food recipes for a 2-year-old can be spicy. If your child is fussy about this, you can experiment with reducing the amount of seasoning, especially red chilli powder.
  • Give your child notice before every mealtime. This gets him thinking about food and builds up an appetite.
  • Have the food ready and plated for mealtime when your child arrives.
  • Do not punish or reward your child’s eating habits, as it can create a problematic attitude towards food and harm your child’s relationship with food.
  • Don’t allow your toddler to watch T.V. during mealtime, as he needs to focus on the food. Talk to him instead and include him in conversations with all the family members.

Disclaimer:

  • Look out for allergies. Your child could be allergic to certain nuts, grains or dairy products. Make sure you avoid these food items and consult your doctor about the allergies.
  • When introducing your toddler to new foods, you should ensure that you introduce new food one at a time as this will make it easier for you to check for allergies and help you understand your child’s preferences.
  • If your child is suffering from diarrhoea, don’t stop feeding him. Consult a doctor and feed him foods that are nutritious and can control the diarrhoea.
  • Don’t force-feed your toddler. Toddlers can be fussy with food, be patient and know when he has eaten enough.

Eating nutritious food that is fresh and doesn’t contain preservatives is seen by many as something that takes too much effort, but with the right motivation, it can be a habit and not a chore! Include different fresh fruits in your child’s diets, so his tastes vary and he is less likely to become fussy over time.

Sample Daily Toddler Meal Plan (And Feeding Schedules)

Deciding what to feed your toddler every day can be a challenge so these sample toddler meal plans, feeding schedules, and information on what and when to feed, should help eliminate some of the confusion.

Toddler Meal Plan

To give you examples of what a toddler might eat in a day, I have 5 sample toddler meal plans from my own real life when my middle kiddo was 2 years old. These days represent average days and will show how an appetite might fluctuate and the diversity of foods that we can be offering to our toddlers.

What should toddlers eat?

Each day, toddlers should have a mix of:

  • Protein from dairy, nuts/legumes (in forms that are safe for their age), meat, poultry, and fish.
  • Complex carbohydrates from whole grains and produce including sweet potatoes and squash.
  • Healthy fats such as avocado, flax seed, chia seed, hemp seed, egg yolks, and nuts and seeds.
  • Produce including fruits and veggies.

Toddlers also need iron-rich foods and fiber-rich foods, which they’ll naturally get if they eat from a mix of categories above. It’s also a good idea to aim to serve them a wide range of foods to ensure that they’re getting the nutrition they need to grow—and to help avoid falling into a rut of picky eating.

This may sound overwhelming, but really, if you aim for 1-2 food groups minimum at most meals and vary what you serve throughout the week, you don’t need to spend time tracking food groups or counting grams, promise.

TIP: Get a printable Toddler Daily Nutrition Chart here.

How many meals a day should a toddler have?

Most toddlers will do well with three main meals and two smaller snacks a day. Tune in to your toddler though because they may prefer a snack first thing, then breakfast later in the morning at what is typically morning snack time. Many toddlers are also hungry for a dinner-size meal at 4 pm and would be satisfied with a smaller snack closer to bedtime. You can adjust as needed.

TIP: It can help to think of all of the food your child eats in one day as “mini meals” and to serve the same sorts of foods at each meal—instead of saving “snack” foods for just snack times. That can improve your kiddo’s disposition at all meals!

How much time should I allow between toddler meals?

Depending on the age of your toddler, and their activity level, whether they have a cold, and what you’re up to, etc, you can aim for 2-3 hours between meals and snacks. That window of time will give them plenty of time to work up an appetite, which can help them be more interested in eating what you serve them.

Having set meal and snack times is a good routine to aim for since it can set a cadence to your day and help your toddler know what to expect. (I.E., try not to allow grazing on snacks all day since that is the fastest way to ruin an appetite for an actual meal!)

TIP: Learn what to do when your toddler won’t eat here.

Toddler Meal Plan for 2 Year Old

Here’s a look at a few sample toddler meal plans from real life with my two year old. This first was a weekend day and we typically go lighter on snacks to help our toddler have an appetite for her meals. She ate a solid breakfast this day so the banana was all she needed for her morning snack.

  • Breakfast: Applesauce Waffles, applesauce, nut butter
  • Morning Snack: Banana, water
  • Lunch: Spinach Pesto Pasta with Peas, grapes, fruit leather, milk
  • Afternoon Snack: Cherry tomatoes, raisins
  • Dinner: ½ Cheesy Meat Bun, broccoli, milk

Sample Toddler Meal Plan Day Two

This toddler menu was another sample day in our life. On this day, my two year old ate more substantial snacks and didn’t eat all of her main meals, as sometimes happens.

  • Breakfast: Breakfast Cookie, reusable pouch with plain whole milk yogurt
  • Morning Snack: Cheese stick, clementine
  • Lunch: Butternut Squash Apple Soup, Veggie Straws, fresh snap peas with ranch (she didn’t eat all of this and mostly ignored the soup!)
  • Afternoon Snack: Joe’s O’s, kiwi, milk
  • Dinner: Taco filling with ground beef, peppers, beans, and corn; cheese quesadilla (she mostly ate the quesadilla in this meal)

Sample Toddler Meal Plan Day Three

I love to make a batch of muffins on the weekend to have on hand for easy weekday breakfasts—and the Banana Oatmeal Muffins are always a hit with my kids.

  • Breakfast: Banana Oatmeal Muffin, cantaloupe, milk
  • Morning Snack: Sauteed Cinnamon Apples
  • Lunch: Bean and Cheese Quesadilla, corn, Roasted Zucchini, Strawberry Applesauce
  • Afternoon Snack: Cheese Crackers
  • Dinner: Teriyaki Shrimp with Zucchini and rice

Sample Meal Plan Day Four

This may or may not be the right amount of food for your child, so adjust what you serve based on their typical hunger patterns and allow more food if they let you know they’re still hungry.

  • Breakfast: Spinach Pancakes, pineapple, peanut butter
  • Am Snack: Siggi’s 2% yogurt, cucumbers
  • Lunch: Sweet Potato Grilled Cheese, peppers, freeze-dried strawberries, chocolate chip cookies
  • PM Snack: Cheese stick and clementine
  • Dinner: Egg Muffins with veggies, salsa, applesauce, Triscuits

Sample Meal Plan Day Five

We do oatmeal at least twice a week and I’ve found that having it in a regular cadence each week increases the likelihood that my toddler will be happy to eat it.

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal with blueberries
  • Am Snack: Banana
  • Lunch: Carrot Cake Muffins, Roasted Carrot Fries, cottage cheese, grapes
  • PM Snack: Cottage cheese, raspberries, graham crackers
  • Dinner: Baked Chicken Tenders, Cheesy Rice with Carrots, watermelon

TIP: My kiddo was on a cottage cheese kick on this day, hence having it twice.

How do I know if my toddler is eating enough?

If your toddler is healthy and is energetic, is meeting milestones and is gaining weight, you can trust them to eat as much as they need for their hunger assuming there are no medical issues at play. (If there are medical concerns, always check in with your pediatrician.)

To help them do this, try to:

  1. Limit distractions at the table, turning off screens so they can focus on their food.
  2. Sit with them while they eat so they start to learn table manners and can mimic what they see you doing.
  3. Don’t pressure them to eat more than they seem to want.
  4. Read up on the Division of Responsibility in Feeding to avoid power struggles.
  5. Set meal times and decide what to feed at each meal.
  6. Let the kids decide what of the food to eat and how much.
  7. Aim to serve a variety of healthy foods throughout the week.
  8. Remember that just because a toddler refuses a food doesn’t mean that they don’t like it.
  9. Keep foods you want them to eat in regular rotation so they’re familiar.
  10. Serve small portions to avoid overwhelming the kids.
  11. Be patient, they’re still learning!
  12. Remember that appetites naturally fluctuate and that is not a cause for concern.

There’s No Such Thing As a Perfect Toddler Diet

And most of all, take images of meals that other kids are eating with a grain of salt. No two kids are the same, no two families are the same. There is not one perfect way to feed a toddler, but I hope that seeing some examples do help!

2 year old child’s menu with recipes

Menu author: Natalia Dik — pediatrician. She graduated from the Chelyabinsk Medical Academy, clinical internship and residency, specialty pediatrics. She has been working in her specialty since 2007, from 2005-2008 she has been the head of the Allergy Department of the City Clinical Hospital No. 1 of Chelyabinsk, since 2008 she has been a specialist in clinical trials of drugs. She enjoys cooking and practices the Menu of the Week system in her daily life.

By the age of two, most babies are able to eat many foods and dishes on their own, there is no need to grind food in a blender or knead with a fork. Rejoicing at such changes, some parents want to give the baby to try more new dishes. Some, on the contrary, are afraid to introduce something new, and they are in no hurry to transfer it to the general table. There is some common sense in both approaches. Although the digestive system of a two-year-old baby is already much more mature compared to a one-year-old, nevertheless, it is not yet strong enough. Therefore transition to adult food should be gradual .

The sample menu for week below is suitable not only for feeding a two-year-old child, but also for the whole family.

Do not worry if one of the days the child has not eaten all the dishes you have prepared. Our ideas about how much a two-year-old baby should eat often differ from reality in the direction of overestimation. In addition, children may have their own characteristics and preferences. Everything new is best offered in small portions. Often, babies carefully try unfamiliar or otherwise prepared foods, but if they are offered the same dish next time, they can eat it with pleasure.

MONDAY

Breakfast: Porridge made of oatmeal with caramel apples
Lunch: Pumpkin soup with chicken+salad “Sunny”
SUPPLE: Smoothies with shepherd
Dinner: Stewed vegetables with freaksheels

Pediatrician’s comment:

As with all ages, it is very important to diversify the diet of children, including different types of foods . At the same time, vegetables (fresh and cooked), fruits, cereals, milk and dairy products, vegetable and butter should be on the children’s menu daily.

Recommended norm of milk and dairy products – up to 600 ml (of which at least 200 ml are fermented milk products), vegetables 300-400g (of which potatoes – no more than 150g), fruits – 130g, meat (red or poultry) – up to 90g per day , bread – up to 90g (of which black – no more than 30g).

It is advisable to eat fish 2-3 times a week (weekly norm 175g), eggs – no more than 3 times a week.

TUESDAY

Breakfast: Kindergarten-style scrambled eggs
Lunch: Borsch-mashed potatoes + Potato casserole with vegetables
Snack: Baked apples with cottage cheese
Dinner:

Stewed vegetables

Pediatrician’s comment:

Make sure your child drinks enough liquids. The norm is 35 ml/kg of water per day ie with a weight of 12 kg your baby should drink 420 ml. It is desirable that it be clean water. If the child refuses it, you can try to give unsweetened compote, herbal tea, but not store-bought juices.

MEDIUM

Breakfast: Millet porridge with pumpkin in a slow cooker
Lunch: Borscht puree + White cabbage salad with apple
Afternoon snack: Banana smoothie with cookies and nuts
Dinner: Buckwheat porridge + Braised liver

Pediatrician’s comment:

In the diet of two-year-old children, there should be no such things as fast food (in addition to hamburgers and french fries, these are various chips and store-bought crackers), smoked meats, semi-finished products (sausages, sausages), canned and pickled foods, mushrooms and seafood.

THURSDAY

Breakfast: Cottage cheese casserole with apples
Lunch: Soup with fish meatballs + Carrots and dried apricots
SUPPLE: yogurt+milk cake
Boutiker porridge+carcass liver

Pediatrician’s comment:

Of course, it is best to prepare baby food from natural products. If, nevertheless, there is a need to purchase finished products (yogurts, curds, etc.) – be sure to read the information about the composition of on the labels, since at present, even in products intended for baby food, you can often find various flavors, thickeners and preservatives.

Manufacturers use many tricks to confuse customers (for example, they write “No preservatives” even if the composition contains citric acid, a powerful preservative).

FRIDAY

breakfast: Sweet pilaf with dried fruits and nuts
lunch: Soup with fish meatballs + Salad “Vitamin”
SUPPORT: yogurt+milk cake
Dinner: Potato cutlets with turkey and raw

Pediatrician’s comment:

At the age of two, it is already allowed to introduce a small amount of fried , however, try not to abuse this cooking method, preferring boiling, stewing or baking to it.

SATURDAY

Breakfast: Cottage cheese casserole with pumpkin in a slow cooker
Lunch: Ratatui soup in a multicooker+beetroot salad with prunes and feta
Polteria: Kisel from cherries
Dinner: Potato cutlets with turkey and raw

Pediatrician’s comment:

The diet of children at the age of two remains 5 times a day: three main meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and two intermediate ones. If the break between the main meals is short, then in between it is enough to give an unsweetened fruit (apple, pear) or a vegetable salad (for example, apple + carrot). If the break is long, you can offer the baby a fermented milk product (yogurt, cottage cheese) with bread or cookies.

SUNDAY

Breakfast: Pancakes with carrots
Lunch: Ratatouille soup in a slow cooker + Beetroot salad with prunes and feta
Afternoon snack: Cherry jelly
Fish casserole 10019 Fish casserole1 9000

Pediatrician’s comment:

Some experts do not recommend introducing sugar and confectionery into the diet until the age of three , or even for life. If you are already giving your child sweets, remember that the daily intake of sugar for a two-year-old child is up to 50g per day, and the less, the better. Chocolate and chocolates should be avoided as they stimulate the nervous system of children, often cause allergies and can cause constipation.

Kindergarten omelet

go back

Lush, tall, dense and sweetly fragrant! Omelet is a forgotten taste of childhood. I propose to cook it according to kindergarten technology, and at the same time debunk a few myths around this simple, and at the same time difficult dish. I will tell and show the secrets and tricks of making an omelette like in kindergarten.

I learned how to make the right omelet from my mother in kindergarten. She has been working in kindergarten for more than 40 years. A medical specialist who draws up a menu for 10-14 days and controls the nutrition of preschool children.

In fact, omelette is a French dish, and it is truly an exam and a test even for the most eminent chefs. For example, in Michelin-starred restaurants in France, any applicant for a chef always passes a culinary test: he is asked to cook scrambled eggs or scrambled eggs.

Ingredients :

  • Egg – 5 pcs.
  • Milk – 500 ml.
  • Salt – 1 tsp
  • Butter – 20 gr.

Preparation:

Wash and dry chicken eggs, break into a work bowl. Pierce the yolks with a fork and beat lightly until smooth. It is very important to learn: eggs for an omelette are beaten exclusively with a fork. Even professionals do not use a whisk, much less mixers.

Pour milk over the eggs. Salt and continue beating. It should be said that fanaticism is inappropriate here. Lush foam is not required, but gentle accuracy is even welcome. This is a guarantee that the omelet will not settle at the exit from the oven.

Turn on the oven and set the temperature to 200 degrees. Grease an ovenproof dish with butter. Pour the egg-milk mass into it and put in the oven for 10-15 minutes. The oven should already be preheated to 200 degrees.

Drizzle the finished omelet with hot melted butter. Cool slightly and cut into serving squares.

And now it’s time to start talking about myths.

  • The first is about height. Many people remember almost a skyscraper on their plate. So, according to the official document of the Government itself, the height of an omelet cannot exceed 4 cm. The norm is 2.5-3 cm in height.
  • The second myth is about starch and flour. All this is fiction or the machinations of non-professionals. There can be no starch, let alone flour, in an omelet like in kindergarten. Its composition is extremely simple: egg, milk, salt and always butter. By the way, its role in the velvet structure of the omelet is far from the last. It is butter that makes eggs soft and silky, while vegetable fats can turn an omelet into a sole. The ratio of eggs and milk is also strictly regulated: for one serving of omelette one egg and 100 ml. milk.
  • The third myth is the cooking time. According to SanPiN standards, omelettes should be cooked “for 8-10 minutes at a temperature of 180-200 C, with a layer of no more than 2.5-3 cm.” Some smart people are ready to bake an omelette for as long as 30 minutes. Almost like a chicken! Although the technology of the correct omelette, as can be seen from the documents, is 200 degrees and 10 minutes. But if the home oven does not hold heat well, then the time can be increased by another 5 minutes so that the omelette grabs.

Here, on the cut, is the “correct” omelette.

If the cooking time is “too much”, then the omelet will be porous on the cut, will give a lot of liquid, and this can be ruthlessly counted as a culinary fakup. The “correct” omelette is homogeneous on the cut. The more holes, the closer to prescription failure. I deliberately returned this portion to the oven in order to “overexpose” and clearly show how the structure of the omelet changes. The number of irregular holes has increased markedly. The height of the omelet itself has also noticeably decreased.

If you take into account all the tricks and tricks, it turns out that an omelet is far from being a “standard” dish. A whole art that requires skill, diligence and patience! I also did not immediately come to my “ideal” omelet. But years of training and love for this simple, difficult dish still gave results. Try to cook an omelette like in kindergarten, and you will succeed!

What to Do If Your Baby Drools a Lot

An excess of saliva and drooling is normal in babies. This is because they haven’t learned to swallow their saliva yet. While newborns don’t produce a great deal of saliva, after 2 months, babies begin to drool even more.

At this age, babies start to suck and chew on everything, and saliva production increases without the baby even realizing it. Therefore, naturally, babies drool.

It all has to do with little ones’ swallowing system. When babies drink, they use the muscles in their mouths to suction and swallow. However, saliva production is automatic and remains in a baby’s mouth until it overflows.

Baby bibs are a great tool if your baby drools a lot. They help keep your baby’s chest from getting wet and also help them stay warm. We need to also pay attention and be sure to keep our baby‘s mouth dry to avoid possible irritation .

My baby drools a lot… When should I start to worry?

When a baby has a cold, it’s normal for drooling to be excessive.  If you notice this change though your baby isn’t sick, then you should consult your pediatrician .

If a baby’s drooling lasts for a long time, then it may mean there’s a problem in the nervous system. As a result, your baby is unable to swallow properly.

If your little one has difficulty eating and drools a lot, it may mean it hurts when he or she swallows. The cause is generally a viral infection that produces pain or sores in the mouth.

“In general, children drool until about the time they reach 18 months of age, though this may vary.”

If your child drools a lot, he or she runs the risk of getting choked up frequently or having constant nausea. It can also cause your child to have respiratory difficulties. In either of these situations, it’s important you stay calm and take your child to the pediatrician to rule out any illness.

Finally, it’s also important to remember that babies have an immature swallowing reflex and this can last for some time.

Is teething the only reason my baby drools so much?

Clearly, one of the main reasons that babies drool excessively is because of their teeth coming in. While they may take some time to appear, the cores of a baby’s teeth begin to move around in the gums at around 2 months.

Saliva contains enzymes, which help combat certain infections. This is why saliva production increases as soon as your little one’s first tooth comes in. At this point, your child will likely benefit from a teething ring. These are useful tools for providing relief from sore gums – however, they also trigger saliva production.

At the same time, one of the first things small babies discover are their hands. And once they do, they start putting them in their mouths. This allows them to discover new sensations. By playing with their hands, babies stimulate saliva and start to drool.

This habit is beneficial when babies start to eat solid foods. For example, they grasp their foods and put them in their mouths as a means of exploration. Little by little, they learn to eat solid foods on their own.

Of course, when babies start to chew on their fingers and play with their tongues, this stimulates salivation. Saliva is a key part in softening foods and swallowing them.

Infants tend to bite using the area of their gums where teeth are coming in. This region tends to appear swollen and red. Salivation is quite pronounced and necessary at this stage, as it keeps the area hydrated and prevents infection.

Saliva and eating

The new flavors and sensations that babies experience when they start to eat solids stimulate their taste buds. This also causes little ones to salivate more than normal. The role of saliva, in this case, is to lubricate and help foods make their way to the stomach.

You should pay special attention to your child’s drooling if it goes beyond what you think is normal.  In general, children drool until about the time they reach 18 months of age, though this may vary. It all depends on your child’s individual developmental process, his or her acceptance of solid foods, and teething.

That being said, there’s no need to become alarmed. Always keep a bib or burp cloth on hand as well as a pacifier or teether to help your baby through this stage. Calmly discover and enjoy this phase in your little one’s infancy. Remember, every moment in your baby’s life, whether good or bad, is unique.

Kid’s Dentist Answers: What’s the point of saliva?

Babies drool. A lot. Sometimes, parents feel like their baby drools a little too much. The truth is that saliva plays an important role in creating a healthy oral environment that also promotes good overall health. So, if your little one is going through five bibs a day because of drool, you shouldn’t be concerned. Her body is just doing what it needs to do to maintain optimal health.

What exactly is the saliva doing? Check out this blog to learn the benefits of saliva, why your little one drools so much, and what to do if you or your child isn’t producing enough of it!

The Benefits of Saliva Production

One fun fact about saliva is that without it, our foods and beverages wouldn’t taste the same. That’s pretty interesting and cool, but it isn’t close to all that saliva does for our mouths and bodies.

The benefits of proper saliva production include:

  • Helps break down food for proper digestion
  • Speeds up the healing process when the mouth is cut, burned, or wounded
  • Remineralizes teeth to protect against cavities
  • Rids the teeth and other surfaces of food particles
  • Aids in chewing and swallowing
  • Keeps mouth comfortable

As you can see, saliva is so necessary for our mouths. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to function properly, and life would be a little more difficult.

Is too much saliva a bad thing?

Constant drooling may seem concerning, but dental experts agree that an overly drooly baby is normal and even a positive thing! This usually means that the baby’s teeth are developing, and the saliva is actively cleaning the surfaces of his or her mouth. Saliva also helps your baby break down and digest food properly, so be thankful! Another thing to keep in mind is that babies have to learn how to get rid of the saliva by swallowing, so instead of it going down their throats, much of it comes out of their lips.

The only problem your little one may experience is skin irritation around her mouth. Use a soft cloth to gently clean the area, then rub Vaseline or another mild moisturizer to protect the skin.

What about too little saliva production?

Many adults have experienced dry mouth. Infants, adolescents, and teens experience it as well. In children, dehydration is the usual source. Be sure that your child is drinking enough water throughout the day and especially when he or she wakes up in the morning or from a nap.

Other remedies for dry mouth in children and adults include:

  • Chew sugar-free gum
  • Eliminate caffeine
  • Breathe through the nose instead of the mouth
  • Use a humidifier
  • Eat a proper, mouth-friendly diet

Dry mouth is rare in children and is almost always due to dehydration, though certain medications may be the cause as well. Regular occurrences of dry mouth can lead to serious oral health problems like cavities and gum disease. If you are concerned about your little one’s saliva production, contact a pediatric dentist today to schedule an appointment.

A child drools at 2 months: reasons | is it dangerous?

Abundant salivation in babies of the first year of life is considered by most parents to be the first signs of erupting teeth, and therefore they are very worried if a child at 2 months begins to drool and bubbles. Some consider this a sign of endocrine diseases, others – neurological symptoms, but both of them spend a lot of effort, time and their nerve cells, figuring out whether this is normal and what to do about it.

Why babies drool at 2 months

The salivary glands begin their work during fetal development, but only by 2-3 months of life they become truly active and produce enough saliva. Therefore, parents whose children drool and bubble profusely at the age of 2-3 months should only rejoice at the new stage in the development of the child and try to make it as convenient as possible for the baby and others. Sufficient saliva production after 2 months is very important – it ensures the breakdown of milk starch in the oral cavity to sugars, which facilitates the digestion of food in the stomach, and in addition, saliva protects the baby’s oral cavity from drying out and pathogens.

Due to the fact that earlier there was little saliva and the child simply did not have such a need, he will learn to swallow excess liquid only by 4-5 months, and then the first teeth will arrive in time and the epic with salivation will begin again, in order to completely stop by 1.6-2, and even 3 years.

When drooling is not normal

If increased salivation is explained by the next stage in the child’s development, then he should not have any other signs of pathology. The baby should remain cheerful, calm, eat with appetite, play, walk and feel great, with the possible exception of redness and maceration of the skin on the chin, which appears in children due to constant irritation with saliva.

Sometimes a 2-month-old baby drools because of :

  • SARS or colds – stuffy nose, fever and profuse salivation – these are the main signs of illness in a baby;
  • allergic reactions – most often appear in young children when plant pollen, dust, detergent fumes and other allergens enter the body. It is quite easy to distinguish allergic rhinitis, in addition to a large amount of saliva, the child’s nose is constantly stuffy, his eyes turn red and watery, he sneezes and coughs;
  • endocrine disorders – thyroid diseases at this age can be manifested by profuse salivation, but the child’s mouth is constantly open, the tongue is thickened and may not fit in the oral cavity, and there are other signs of developmental delay;
  • neurological disorders – in this case, in addition to profuse salivation, the child has several other signs of developmental disorders – pulsation of a large fontanel, constant crying, developmental delay – the baby does not hold his head in weight, cannot lift it while lying on his stomach, and so on.

If you think that your child is drooling too much or something is bothering you in his behavior and development, seek the advice of a pediatrician or neurologist – a specialist will help you dispel all your fears and simply enjoy every stage of your baby’s growth.

Why adults drool during sleep

Health

The discomfort and hygiene problems associated with nighttime salivation are familiar to adults and children alike. And if a baby’s flowing saliva can even become a reason for tenderness of parents, then an adult person definitely does not need this. Even a severe cold can become a side effect of the process – it is bad to sleep on a wet pillow in a cool room.

Why people drool while sleeping

This problem usually has two causes: increased salivation associated with various processes (for example, teething in children), or difficulty breathing, and the associated habit of sleeping with your mouth open.

Abundant saliva can be a kind of normal – if this does not bother a person, then there is nothing to fear. But breathing difficulties are unpleasant both in themselves and when they are symptoms of certain diseases or signs of injury:

damage to the nasal septum;

· narrowing of the respiratory passages due to the growth of lymphoid tissue, inflammation of the sinuses, lymph nodes;

increased salivation due to manipulations in the oral region – extraction or treatment of teeth, operations on the palate or lips;

· nasal congestion due to a cold or infectious disease.

People prone to snoring often suffer from excessive salivation. Also, the problem – drooling during sleep in an adult – is associated with overweight and high blood pressure.

During many studies, scientists have found that this may be due to difficulty in swallowing that occurs with traumatic brain injury, stroke or Parkinson’s disease. This will often manifest itself during the day.

What to do if your child drools during the night:

  • the same as in an adult, with difficult breathing;
  • for babies with clearly erupting teeth, anxiety is unreasonable, but you still need to look after the baby – perhaps the teeth are not the only reason;
  • if teeth have erupted and excessive salivation has not disappeared, you should change your sleeping position and, probably, contact an ENT doctor to check the respiratory passages.

The same applies to adults:

  • sleeping on the back is the best option for flowing saliva, and persistent habits of sleeping on the back are difficult to get rid of – you will have to put a roller or fold the blanket so that it prevents you from turning;
  • you can also raise the pillow higher, replace it with a more rigid product;
  • it is also desirable to drink less liquid before going to bed and, if possible, get rid of excess weight, normalize the functioning of the body as a whole.

Sleeping face down baby: SIDS risk linked to lack of experience with tummy-sleeping – The Source

Is It Safe for My Baby to Sleep Face Down?

  • It’s instinctual for a baby to want to sleep on their stomach.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies sleep on their back until they are 12 months old.
  • The AAP says if you consistently see your baby rolling from back to tummy and tummy to back, there is no need to continue trying to flip them on their back.

When you bring your new baby home from the hospital, you are likely to be surrounded by lots of advice and opinions from well-meaning friends and family.

Your grandma might remind you to never wake a sleeping baby. Your neighbor might urge you to only use a certain bottle in order to prevent gas. Your mom might tell you to put grape jelly on the pacifier for colic.

It can be overwhelming and difficult to know which advice to follow!

One area you’ll likely hear lots of conflicting opinions on is infant sleep. Your doctor will say to put the infant to sleep on their back. Yet your mom might swear that you slept better as a baby on your tummy.

What do you do?

We’re here to clear up any confusion on safe sleep recommendations for your infant. We’ve done the research. If you’ve seen your baby sleeping face down, and are wondering if it’s okay, here are the facts you should know!

Why Do Babies Want To Sleep Face Down?

We’d like to start by clarifying that when we say “baby sleeping face down”, we don’t mean that the baby is sleeping directly on their face. What we mean is that the baby is sleeping on their stomach instead of their back. A baby should never, under any circumstances, sleep directly on their face due to suffocation risks.

It’s instinctual for a baby to want to sleep on their stomach. This position often feels more natural and snug to them. It also helps reduce the startle reflex, which is why some parents often try it out of desperation when their baby won’t sleep.

This natural urge most babies have to sleep on their stomachs can be hard to break. Some parents find their older babies trying to flip to their tummies even when laid on their back.

When Can Babies Sleep on Their Stomach Safely?

There is good news for those infants who are determined to sleep in a face-down position. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies only sleep on their back until they are 12 months old. After that, it’s safe for your little one to change their sleep position to tummy sleeping.

That’s because of the limited risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome after one year of age. Researchers aren’t completely sure what causes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and why it drops off at this age. However, we do know that babies over 12 months old aren’t at great risk for suffocation in the mattress.

Also, the AAP says if you consistently see your baby rolling from back to tummy and tummy to back, there is no need to continue trying to flip them on their back. At this point, they are safe to sleep on their tummies. They can easily flip over if needed.

What Are the Official Recommendations for Baby Sleep Positioning?

If you were born before 1992, chances are you were put down to sleep on your stomach. This was the recommendation at the time to help decrease the risk of SIDS. (Hence why your mom swears by this method.)

However, in 1992 the AAP released a new recommendation that babies should now be put down to sleep on their backs to decrease the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Along with this recommendation came a new list of research-backed do’s and don’ts for new parents.

Following these research-backed recommendations will ensure a safe sleep environment.

We know these guidelines might seem like an inconvenience to parents. Especially if your infant sleeps on their tummy. However, safe sleep is crucial to reducing the risk of SIDS.

These recommendations include:

1.

Empty Crib

We know, those cute bumper pads, stuffed animals, and crib blankets are tempting to put in the crib. However, these increase the risk of SIDS as they provide an opportunity for suffocation. When you put your baby to sleep, the crib should be free of loose blankets, soft toys, crib bumpers, or other soft objects.

It is okay to have a pacifier in the crib. Many parents do this so that their babies can find it in the middle of the night and put themselves back to sleep. Other than that, all your baby needs in their crib is a mattress approved for infants and a tight-fitting crib sheet.

2. Baby on Back

Starting at birth, babies should be placed on their backs to sleep. Swaddling your baby is a good way to reduce the startle reflex without letting your baby sleep on their tummy. As soon as your baby rolls over for the first time, you should stop using a swaddle.

If your baby has trouble falling asleep on their back, there are many sleep training methods you can try. Don’t let your baby sleep face down just to try and improve sleep quality. This will put them at high risk for suffocation.

3. Dress Baby Appropriately

Overheating is another danger for infants. Many parents worry that their infant might get cold at night. But overdressing your baby can increase their body temperature to a dangerous temperature.

Refrain from dressing your baby for sleep in multiple layers or using blankets in their crib.To be sure your baby doesn’t overheat, only dress your baby in one more layer than what you are comfortable wearing to bed that night.

Wearable blankets are a great alternative to regular blankets. They often come in varying thicknesses. This will keep your baby just the right temperature without any worry of harm.

4. Don’t Co-Sleep

It might be tempting to put your baby in the bed with you. Especially if it’s been a long night of no sleep. But co-sleeping with your baby in bed isn’t safe.

If your baby sleeps in the bed with you and your spouse, the risk for suffocation is increased. Parents can accidentally roll over on their children. Your baby’s face can also become trapped in pillows or blankets.

Keep your baby’s health your number one priority and reduce SIDS risk by letting your baby sleep in their crib or bassinet.

As an alternative, there are products that exist to keep baby close to you as you sleep. Many bedside bassinets have removable sides that drop down. This makes you feel near your baby while keeping them safe.

5. Don’t Use Car Seats for Sleep

If your baby sleeps in the car seat when not in the car, this may put them at a higher suffocation risk. This is due to the position of their heads when the car seat is placed on the floor. As they sleep, their head might drop forward, cutting off their airway.

If your baby falls asleep in the car, that’s okay. Just transfer them into their bed when you arrive home. Don’t allow them to keep napping in the car seat at friends’ houses, restaurants, etc.

This also applies to swings, bouncer seats, and other baby seats. The only safe place for a baby to sleep is in their bed.

How To Stop Your Baby From Sleeping Face Down

Some parents are alarmed when they find their baby sleeping face down after they’ve put them on their back. If your baby sleeps face down but knows how to roll from front to back, they are okay. You likely won’t be able to keep them from rolling back and forth through the night anyways!

Some babies sleep face down from habit. There are things you can do to start transitioning your baby’s sleeping position to their back.

1. Try Sleep Training

There are several methods of sleep training that can help if your baby prefers a tummy sleeping position. Teaching them to fall asleep without lying face down might be tricky. However, using sleep training can speed up the process.

Some parents prefer no-cry sleep training methods like gentle sleep training, the pick up put down method, or chair method sleep training. These generally take longer to work but eliminate most of the crying. Faster methods include the Ferber method or the fading method.

Whatever training method you choose, know that consistency is key. Keep trying and know that you are doing what’s best for your baby.

2. Swaddle Your Baby

If your baby is not yet rolling onto their tummy, you can swaddle them to recreate the comfort they had sleeping face down. Many babies prefer the face-down sleeping position because it feels cozy. A swaddle will wrap them snuggly while they sleep on their backs.

3. Provide Tummy Time

When your baby develops their muscles for rolling from both back and front, they will be able to safely sleep on their tummy. You can help them develop these muscles by laying them on their stomach during the day for playtime. This will allow them to lift their head and practice rolling over.

FAQs

Does sleeping on their back make a baby’s head flat?

Many parents worry that their baby will develop flat head syndrome from lying on their back. The truth is some babies do develop flat heads from staying in one position too long overtime.

Babies have soft skulls, so their heads are moldable. When babies spend too much time lying on their backs, the back of their head can look flattened. This is called positional plagiocephaly.

The good news is this usually corrects itself as your baby grows and starts to spend more time sitting up and crawling. Only in some cases will the baby need to wear a special helmet to correct the shape of their head.

If you notice your baby sleeping with their head in the same position, there are things you can try.

First, try changing their sleeping positions every night. Many babies turn their heads in the direction of what’s most interesting such as a mobile or night light. Try laying them facing in different directions each night so they will turn their head a different way.

Second, babies should have plenty of tummy time during the day to counteract back sleeping. This also prepares their neck muscles for sleeping face down when they can roll back and forth. Tummy time for 10 minutes at a time, 3 times a day is ideal.

Is it okay for my baby to sleep on their side?

No. Babies who sleep on their sides have an increased risk of SIDS. The only safe sleep position for infants is on their backs.

What are other risk factors for SIDS?

Researchers suggest there are several factors that increase SIDS risks in babies. These include:

  • Lying face down to sleep.
  • Sleeping on soft surfaces not designed for infant sleep (This includes adult mattresses, couches, air mattresses, or chairs. Babies should only sleep on a firm mattress that is approved for infants.)
  • Sleeping with loose blankets (These can easily become entangled around the baby’s face or neck. Babies might also bury their faces into loose bedding if they flip over to sleep facing down.)
  • Overheating during sleep (Too many layers is often the culprit of overheating. If you notice your baby sweating or that their chest feels hot, remove layers and cool your baby immediately. )
  • Exposure to cigarette smoke during pregnancy or after birth (This increases the risk for bacterial or viral infections, and deprives the infant of oxygen.)
  • Co-sleeping with parents.
  • Research released in 2022 found that infants with low levels of the enzyme BChE were much more likely to succumb to SIDS.

Are there any other ways to reduce my baby’s risk for SIDS?

There are several things you can do to reduce your baby’s risk for SIDS. These include:

  • Breastfeeding your baby
  • Sleeping on a firm mattress
  • Not smoking around your baby
  • Avoiding alcohol and drugs during pregnancy
  • Offering your baby a pacifier at bedtime and naptime
  • Vaccinating your baby according to the recommended schedule
  • Having your baby sleep in the same room as you (but not the same bed)

By following these tips, you can help keep your baby safe.

Baby Sleeping Face Down. You Are Frantic😩What to Do.

Baby sleeping face down?

Finding your baby sleeping face down is a scary feeling.   The founders of SafeSleep® know too well.  Sadly, they lost a loved ones who rolled in the middle of the night.

Fast forward, the founders set out to stop this from happening to other infants.  So don’t worry.  There is a solution.

It’s true, most infants turn their heads when their not getting fresh oxygen.  For example when a baby is sleeping on their side and close to a bumper pad.  Or, when your baby is a stomach sleeper and they are face down.  But unfortunately, some will not.  We don’t know which ones will or will not.  Consequently, we need to remove the risk.

Unfortunately, there are over 3600 sudden unexpected infant deaths each year in the U.S.

The AAP has No Clear Guidelines –   “When a Baby Begins Rolling Over or Baby is Sleeping Face Down”

In 1944, a pathologist who studied infant deaths noticed that over 65% of infants who died from SIDS during the night were found face down.  However, it was not until the 1990’s when SIDS researchers and medical professionals launched the back-to-sleep campaign.

Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not give parents clear directions on what to do when a baby begins rolling over.  I have seen newborns rolling to their side to sleep. Trust me, this is very risky in the middle of the night.

Too often, these babies end up face down. Unfortunately, babies sleeping face down are at a greater risk of SIDS

Baby Sleeping Face Down?

We know the answer to the question, “should babies sleep on their back?”

Finally, we can easily answer the question that the Back-to-Sleep campaign does not!  What do I do when my baby begins rolling over in sleep?

Impressively, the answer is a totally breathe-through crib mattress.  The mattress is designed by a leading Pediatrician.  Specifically, a baby can breathe normally while sleeping face down.  As a result, it is called the SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress.

It’s unique design is tested and shows 100% oxygen rich air while breathing through the mattress.   Breathable crib mattresses don’t offer this feature.

It’s no wonder, the SafeSleep® is the number one pediatrician recommended crib mattress.  In fact, it is the only crib mattress pediatricians and respiratory therapists write prescriptions for infants who must tummy sleep for health reasons.

Shop the SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress

So Why Trust Us?

I never thought of becoming a crib mattress designer.  In fact, I am running my own successful design firm when a friend showed me a photo of a breathe-through crib mattress.  He is aware of my design skills.  Consequently, he asks me to develop it.

As you can imagine, it is no easy decision.  However, I am sure of one thing.  A crib mattress of this type will save a lot of young lives.  Consequently, it is something I can’t ignore.

Safer Crib Mattress Design For a Baby Sleeping Face Down

Immediately, I shows the idea to my sister.  She is a leading pediatrician.  Specifically, she serves on many national committees.   Additionally, she is the author of many peer-reviewed publications that advance the health of children.

She and I both know the idea is brilliant.  For this reason, we know it is a project too important for infant safe sleep to overlook.

Research of Crib Mattresses

First, we begin by researching crib mattresses of all types.  Specifically, we are looking at the many issues relating to their safety.  However, we are also looking at their use in aiding an infant’s health and development.  Additionally, we don’t ignore sanitary and comfort issues.

Over time, our research includes a lot of peer-reviewed published studies to find out what the best and safest crib mattress should look and feel like.

These studies include:

  • crib mattresses.
  • play yards.
  • SIDS and other infant sleep related deaths.
  • Flat Head Syndrome.
  • Off-gassing & toxins used in mattresses
  • Mold, pathogens and other bacteria in crib mattresses.
Some of the more notable studies include:
  • Are bedding and rebreathing suffocation a cause of SIDS?
  • Rebreathing of exhaled air: importance as a mechanism for the causal association between stomach sleep and SIDS
  • Stomach sleeping and SIDS.
  • Changing Infants’ Sleep Position Increases Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
  • Mechanical model testing of rebreathing potential in infant bedding
  • Used infant mattresses and SIDS
  • Sudden Death in Infants Sleeping on Polystyrene-Filled Cushions
  • Clothing and bedding and its relation to SIDS
  • Deformational plagiocephaly
  • The “back to sleep campaign” and deformational plagiocephaly: is there cause for concern?

Sources for Our Crib Mattress Research

Additionally, in our research of creating the safest and best crib mattress, we use the following:

  • Scientific testing
  • American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe sleep guidelines
  • Consumer Products Safety Commissions (CPSC) findings
  • The National Institute of Health (NIH) safe sleep guidelines
  • Interviews with SIDS experts, AAP experts, child safety experts, pediatric lung specialists, and parents who lost an infant while sleeping.

Our Crib Mattress Research

We are familiar with AAP’s data on safe sleep.  So much so, we challenge the Safe Sleep Task Force in 2015.  The result is an update to information on the benefits of breathe-through crib mattresses.

As mentioned prior, breathe-through crib mattresses allow a baby who is sleeping face down to breathe normally through his mattress.  This feature eliminates the risk of suffocation.  Equally important, it eliminates the risk of rebreathing.

AAP Safe Sleep Task Force (SSTF)

I spoke with many of the SSTF Members.  In fact, the Chair, Dr. Rachelle Moon and I wereboth expert witnesses in the same trial.  The trial involved the death of a 7 ½ month old baby.  Consequently, I was able to discuss with her the many issues the SSTF faces while creating safe sleep guidelines.

AAP Committee – Fetus and Newborns

Additionally, we spoke with members of the AAP’s Committee of Fetus and Newborns (COFN). COFN over sees the AAP’s SSTF’s policies and guidelines.

In particular, COFN studies issues and current advances in fetal and neonatal care.  Moreover, they make recommendations regarding neonatal practices.  Also, they work with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to consider fetal issues.  This bridges the gap between obstetrics and pediatrics in regards to fetus care.

Leading SIDs Researchers Who Did Studies on Baby Sleeping Face Down

In addition, we met with both Dr. James Kemp, Pediatric Pulmonologist.  Also present is  Dr. Brad Thatch, a neonatologist.  Both work at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Markedly, both Kemp and Thatch are known as top SIDS researchers.  Kemp is consistently on “The Best Doctors in America” list.

Equally impressive, thatch received the Anaheim Award for Sleep and Breathing Research in Infancy in 2000.  Also, he is a long-term board member of First Candle SIDS Alliance.

Significantly, both Doctors are are known for their SIDS research.  Notably, they identified “rebreathing” as the most likely cause of many infant sleep related deaths.

To elaborate, rebreathing is when an infant continues to rebreathe their exhaled air (CO2).  It’s important to remember, rebreathing is the leading theory behind SIDS deaths. Eliminating rebreathing risk is used for the most of the Safe Sleep Task Forces’ safe sleep guidelines.

New Legislation Pertaining to Crib Safety

In particular,  their is new legislative action outlawing the sale of bumper pads in the U.S.  Part of this law is based on newborns rolling on their side to sleep with their faces wedged up against or near bumper pads.  This position can cause a baby to rebreathe his exhaled air.

We must ask ourselves, if a bumper pad is causing rebreathing when a baby rolls to their side while sleeping, what is the danger of a baby sleeping face down? Obviously, most crib mattresses have more padding than a bumper pad.  If a bumper pad is a danger for a baby sleeping on their side.  We have to conclude a crib mattress with fiber fill is equally as dangerous to a baby sleeping face down.

Epidemiologist

I met Dr. Ron Somers, an epidemiologist, on an infant list service.  Dr. Somers is the creator of the Australia standard for crib mattress firmness.  This standard is listed as AS/NZS 8811.1:2013.

The SafeSleep® Crib Mattress is the only mattress in the U.S. to pass his crib mattress firmness test. Even more impressive, Dr. Somers gives our product an unsolicited endorsement.

The firmness standard is also known as “method 1: Crib Mattress – Test for firmness.  It is the only test to address the issue of minimum safe firmness for crib mattresses.

Dr. Somers is the former director of Epidemiology in Australia.

Pediatric Lung Specialist

Additionally, I met with Dr. Thomas H. Shaffer, Department of Biomedical Research, Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.  He is the Director of the Center for Pediatric Lung Research.  In particular, Dr. Schaffer helped create and over sees the testing used to determine CO2 evaporation levels on crib mattresses.   Currently, his testing and methods are used by certified test labs.

Warning from Dr. Ron Somers Regarding

Breathable Crib Mattresses

In 2020, an article written by Dr. Somers is published in Infant & Nursery Products Alliance of Australia (INPAA).  INPAA is similar to the CPSC in the U.S.  But more specifically, INPAA’s key goal is preventing injuries of children.

In the article Somers states, “If you really want to protect your baby from suffocation, you need to be aware of false mattress-safety claims.”

Somers explains, “Rebreathing of CO2 causes suffocation. With many of the so-called breathable crib mattresses, the CO2 (being heavier than air) sinks into the mattress.  It is then sucked up by the baby for rebreathing. In other words, the carbon dioxide does not dissipate.

This is determined by a special test using a mechanical baby.  The mechanical baby breaths in and out like a real baby. If a manufacturer doesn’t show you their results on this kind of test, don’t fall for their safety hype.

SafeSleep® provides this test data and all their test data on their website.

Ironically, Somers is referring to the testing and methods created in part by Dr. Shaffer.

CPSC and SIDS Organizations

We spoke with representatives at the CPSC.  Moreover, we used their data base to find reviews and recalls of infant sleep products.  We also spoke with many SIDS organizations.  And, we also spoke with many parents who lost a baby to SIDS.

We are parents too

Even though we are both professionals, we are also parents.  We know it can be hard to change crib sheets.  Crib mattress messes are not strange to us.  And, we have our share of fussy sleepers.

Additionally, we know the value of good sleep for both infants and parents.  Consequently, comfort is also a priority.

Further, we also know the importance of offering quality at a fair price.  Believe it or not, we even considered the aesthetics.  Parents shouldn’t have to choose between safety and a cute nursery.

The effects chemicals in mattresses have on young children are known.  Consequently, we don’t use any!

Research on Infants Who Rolled Over

In a study conducted in New Zealand, researchers found that 3/4 of the infants who died of SIDS were placed on their backs.  The infants were found on their stomach.  This means, the infants rolled to a stomach position.²  These researchers suggest, an infant’s ability to escape a fatal situations during tummy sleep may be impaired by their lack of experience sleeping on their stomach.

Later, their findings are supported by Dr. Moon and colleagues in their review of infant sleep related deaths in child care settings.³

Unfortunately, infants who don’t sleep on their stomach, but roll over are at higher risk of SIDS.  This is now a common unintended consequence of the back-to-sleeping campaign.

Unfortunately, keeping a baby from rolling over is impossible.

Learn more about your baby’s first milestone – baby rolling over.   The medical professionals at SafeSleep® tell you everything you need to know when it comes to your baby rolling over.

SIDS Risk

The fact is, infants under six months of age represent 90% of all SIDS-related deaths.  SIDS risks is peaking between 1-4 months of age.

In a study on infant sleep, overall, 24% of infants are found sleeping on their stomach.  Of this 24%, 12% of 16 to 23-week-old infants placed on their backs or sides are found sleeping face down.  Additionally,  4% of infants aged 24 weeks or older rolled on their stomach.  Lastly, 18% of those placed on either their right or left sides, are found on their stomach.4

Nothing to Do with Good Head and Neck Control

Parents are often falsely assured that when their infant rolls side to side on their own, they are no longer at risk of SIDS.  Many parents believe if their baby has good neck and head control, they are safe even if they are a face roller.  Specifically, they believe a baby will turn their head to avoid a possible dangerous situation.

In stark contrast, scientific studies tell us differently.

According to SIDS  expert Dr. Thach, “The first times babies who usually sleep on their backs or sleep on their sides roll or are put on their tummy, they have a 19-fold increase in the risk of SIDS.”  The percentage increases to 40-fold if an infant is swaddled.

Find our when you should stop swaddling your baby and how to properly transition them.

Thatch goes on to say, “We wonder if these babies, who find themselves face down, do not turn their heads to breathe easier.  If so, is it because their reflexes haven’t developed far enough.  Or, because they simply don’t wake up?  Many parents believe that if a baby can lift his head, he is okay to sleep on his tummy. That is a false assurance.” 5

Repositioning Baby Who is Sleeping Face Down

Some physicians tell parents to move an infant who is sleeping on their stomach to their back.  However, turning a baby back over is unrealistic.   Babies have several position changes per night.  Furthermore, we know repositioning a sleeping baby is disruptive.  This makes choosing the safest crib mattress a must.

In short, parents do not have the time or energy to watch their baby all night.  Parents need sleep too.

CO2 and Baby Sleeping Face Down

Currently, the AAP recommends a firm crib mattress. However, a firm crib mattress poses a high risk of rebreathing of CO2.  This is confirmed in several studies.  And let’s not forget that bumper pads are now banned for sale in the U.S. based on infants who have died.

In fact, according to a 2000 study published in Pediatrics, the findings show a firm mattress poses a high risk of rebreathing while an infant sleeps on their stomach.6  There is no mention of the infants sleeping face down. Further, these findings are of relevance to more recent studies.

More recent studies show that babies who do no normally sleep on their back and roll or are placed on their stomach, have an increase risk of SIDS.   According to the studies,  71% of SIDS victims unaccustomed to stomach sleep, are discovered sleeping face down” 5

CO2 Rebreathing and SIDS

Rebreathing CO2 is when a baby rebreathes their exhaled air.  This normally occurs when a baby is sleeping on his stomach and exhaled air is trapped around the baby’s nose or mouth.

The result, trapped exhaled air causes the baby to breathe in more CO2 than oxygen.  Specifically, if the baby does not wake up or respond appropriately death occurs.7

Example of what is happening when a baby is sleeping face down

Demonstration of Infant Suffocation Caused by Rebreathing CO2

*Source David Greenblatt Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Flow Control Laboratory

We know conventional crib mattresses with fiber fill can cause CO2 to accumulate.  Additionally, vinyl covers, and quilted toppers can cause even higher levels of CO2 accumulation.   Even the folds of sheets causes CO2 to accumulate.

According to Dr. Kemp and Dr. Thach, these bedding materials act to slow the dispersal of exhaled gasses (carbon dioxide), keeping the gasses near a face down infant’s nose and mouth.

As a result, with each breath, the infant takes in an air mixture which is progressively less adequate to sustain life. Further, the more prone an item is to rebreathing (retaining CO2), the more hazardous the item is.8

Peer-Reviewed Studies on Crib Mattresses

SIDS experts agree, infants sleeping on the following surfaces show increased risk of suffocation and rebreathing CO2

  • fiberfill crib mattresses
  • quilted surfaces
  • soft surfaces
  • pillow-like surfaces
  • vinyl pads
  • folds of sheets
  • mattresses filled with tea tree bark and other natural and artificial loose fibers

Eliminating Suffocation and Rebreathing Risks

As mentioned above, rebreathing CO2 is a known danger of infants sleeping on their stomach.   Another danger is suffocation.  Rebreathing CO2 is actually a form of suffocation.  Unlike airway obstruction, rebreathing leads to hypoxia.  Hypoxia is a lack of oxygen to human organs.

Crib mattresses with fiber fill  trap CO2.  They also cause suffocation if they allow for airway obstruction.  The design of the SafeSleep® eliminates both suffocation risk and the risk of rebreathing.

No Fiberfill or Core

To protect babies from suffocation risk, it’s important they can breathe normally when face down.  In order to accomplish this, a crib mattress must be completely breathe-through.  To be completely breathe through, a crib mattress cannot have any fiberfill or core material to block air flow or trap harmful CO2.

Fiberfill and other core materials interfere with air flow.  Additionally, they are known to retain higher levels of CO2.

SafeSleep® has no core or fill material of any kind.  Instead, the base of the mattress is a hollow box with side openings.   This design allows air to circulate uninterrupted.

Air-Permeable, Breathe-Through Surface

In order to be effective, the surface has to be air-permeable.  It’s important that the surface a baby is sleeping face down on be completely breathe-through. This means the surface must be open celled.  An open-celled surface allows air to travel up and down quickly with no obstruction.

Remarkably, the SafeSleep® is tested showing 100% oxygen-rich air while a baby is breathing through the SafeSleep® mattress.  The surface is a medical grade spacer fabric.  This fabric allows air to pass up and down without obstruction.  Not to mention, testing shows a significantly high rate of airflow.

In fact, the SafeSleep® has an air-permeability rate of over 330 times other crib mattresses tested.  That’s a lot of good, healthy, air-flow!

A Real Solution for a Real Problem

Developed by People with Real Knowledge – A Pediatrician and Safe Sleep Expert

The SafeSleep® breathable crib mattress is designed to keep a baby who is sleeping on his side, his stomach, or sleeping face down safe.

  • There is no fiberfill or core to trap CO2.
  • SafeSleep® breathable crib mattress has a hollow center and side openings.
  • The surface is made from an open-cell fabric that allows air to flow up and down with no interruption.
  • No crib sheets are used.
  • The surface is 100% machine washable.
  • No fire retardants or waterproofing chemicals are used.
  • No bathtub or shower is needed for cleaning.

This revolutionary design creates an oxygen-rich environment, even when an infant is face down all night.  The design also creates a user-friendly and easy to clean crib mattress for parents.

Scientific Data on Air-Permeable Crib Mattresses

Scientific data shows some air-permeable mattresses have a “significantly” reduced risk of rebreathing of CO2.9,10  Specifically, the SafeSleep® Breatthe-Through Crib Mattress is tested for CO2 retention.  It has a whopping tenfold decrease in CO2 retention when compared to a fiberfill mattress.

To illustrate, it takes 120 seconds for CO2 to evaporate from a firm fiberfill crib mattress.  However, it takes less than .5 (1/2 a second) for it to evaporate from the SafeSleep® Crib Mattress.10

Fact, an infant takes a breath every 1-2 seconds.  This means, CO2 on the SafeSleep® crib mattress is gone before your baby takes his next breath of air – even if their face is straight down.

Conclusion

We cannot stand watch over our babies all night.  Sleep is important for parents too. Finding your baby sleeping face down is a very scary feeling.

The problem is, we can’t keep them from rolling.  And we cannot keep turning them back over.  It’s unrealistic since infants assume many position changes nightly. Not to mention, flipping them over is disruptive.

Sadly, we know the horrible outcome of a baby simply rolling in the middle of the night.  But with that being said, we don’t expect parents to simply take our word for it.

Most importantly, the science provides the proof the SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress is the safest choice for a baby sleeping face down or on their stomach.

A lot of research went into creating the SafeSleep® Breathe-Though Crib Mattress.  We are proud we are contributing to the progress of keeping sleeping babies safe.

Additionally, we are honored to be recognized by many top medical professionals as bridging the safety gap not addressed by the back-to-sleep campaign – What to do when an infant rolls over.

Is your baby sleeping face down?  SafeSleep® is more than a breathable crib mattress.  It is completely breathe-through.

When can babies sleep on their stomach?

As a new parent, you are constantly bombarded with a deluge of advice and information about everything from feeding schedules to stimulating toys. Simply scroll through your Facebook feed and you are sure to come across plenty of articles telling you exactly what you are doing wrong!

For the most part, a lot of this advice is a matter of opinion, but when it comes to matters of safety, it’s important to gather as much reliable information as you can. Knowing about official recommendations and guidelines is key for keeping your baby safe and healthy.

One area that is important to know a lot about is sleep. Many parents experience anxiety about how, when, and where their infants sleep, and for good reason. After all, you’ve likely heard of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and the direct correlation between SIDS and the sleep environment. There’s also a risk of suffocation or strangulation in bed.

In fact, in 2017, out of the approximately 3600 sudden unexpected infant deaths in the United States:

  • About 1400 of the deaths were due to SIDS
  • About 900 of the deaths were due to suffocation or strangulation in bed.

Many parents wonder what they can do to help prevent such a tragedy from striking their family. While there are no set of precautions that guarantee this, there are several correlations researchers have found between the sleeping environment and SIDS. (For more information on that, check out our SIDS prevention ebook here. It’s free!)

One of these correlations, and the one we’re going to focus on today, has to do specifically with baby sleep positions. How important is proper sleeping position? What is the correct sleeping position for your newborn, and how long do they need to sleep that way?

A quick history of sleep positions

You’ve probably heard from a number of sources the phrase “Back to Sleep,” a campaign that was launched in 1994 and is still used today. But why might your mom and grandmother insist you should put your baby on his or her tummy to sleep? Because for a long time, doctors did not understand that sleeping in the supine position (on the back) was safest for babies.

In 1944, a pathologist from New York noticed that about 66% of infants who died from suffocation during the night were face down. These findings launched a short-lived campaign against face-down sleeping positions.

However, this campaign didn’t last. In 1945 a pediatrician (Woolley) vocally rejected these findings through some faulty research of his own. He attributed the face-down sleeping deaths to infection, choking on vomit, and a hypersensitivity to inhaled milk. He also thought the suffocation explanation caused unnecessary guilt for parents over their child’s death. While noble in his intentions, he set parents on the wrong path for the next 50 years.

(By the way, the idea that babies will choke if they spit up or vomit while sleeping on their backs is a myth: studies show that babies who sleep on their backs are not necessarily more likely to choke while sleeping.)

From the late 1960s to the early 1990s, scientists conducted more research around what is now called SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). As early as 1988, scientists began to recommend putting babies to sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS. Further studies made in New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom supported this new suggestion.

Despite the growing amount of scientific evidence proving otherwise, experts still promoted face-down sleep positions. The first text that advised against face-down sleeping positions wasn’t released until 1992. Since then, the evidence that “back to sleep” is the best solution for babies has only grown stronger, and all major health organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics fully recommend the supine position.

So what do you say to your mom or grandma? The truth is, anyone who thinks you should put your baby on his or her stomach to sleep is absolutely wrong. The evidence is overwhelming that this increases the risk of SIDS.

Putting your baby to sleep (safely)

How do we apply this knowledge to real-life? It’s simple: put your baby to sleep flat on their back, right from the beginning, and make sure that every person caring for your baby does the same.

While the supine sleeping position is a very important part of safe sleep for an infant, it’s only part of it. Other factors go into creating a safe sleep environment as well, like:

  • Place the baby on a firm sleeping surface (no soft mattresses)
  • Keep soft objects, including crib bumpers, blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals, out of the baby’s sleeping area
  • Do not allow your baby to sleep for a prolonged period of time in a car seat, carrier, stroller, swing, or anything that keeps them from lying flat on their back
  • Be aware of cords in the baby’s sleeping area, including those for window coverings or lighting, which pose a threat of strangulation
  • Do not allow your baby to sleep in your bed; this increases risk of suffocation and SIDS

What about “flat head syndrome?”

Plagiocephaly, or “flat head syndrome,” is a common concern for parents who put their babies to sleep on their backs. The idea is that if you allow a baby to rest their head in the same way for too long, it can cause a flat spot to develop, since a baby’s skull is soft after birth.

The truth is, most cases of plagiocephaly are harmless, and have more of a cosmetic effect than anything else. It’s unlikely to affect brain development. Your doctor will be able to tell you if it’s something to worry about.

The syndrome can also be treated, often with the use of a molded helmet that reshapes the skull.

Of course, there are also things you can do to prevent plagiocephaly. Encourage your baby to turn their head to the side when lying on their back in the crib. You might want to put a brightly-colored or music-making toy outside their crib, for example, to attract their attention. You can switch the direction you lay your baby down each night (put his head at one end of the mattress one night, and the other end the next night, and so on), so that he’ll turn his head the other way to keep looking into the room.

Supervised tummy time during the day is another way to help prevent plagiocephaly.

So when is it safe for babies to sleep on their stomach?

With a newborn, sleep position is fairly easy to control. If you put them on their back, they’re likely to stay there. However, there comes a point where you can’t control your baby’s sleep position anymore. He or she may start rolling over in the night, making it impossible for you to make sure they stay on their back. So when can you stop losing sleep over this problem? And at what age is it safe to put your baby on his or her tummy?

The highest risk of SIDS happens between one and four months of age. During this stage, it is absolutely crucial that your baby sleeps in the supine position, flat on their back. When your baby learns how to roll over, usually around 6 months, she may roll from her back to her belly during the night. When this happens, you should still put your baby to sleep on her back, but you don’t have to worry if she rolls over herself when you’re not around. (Again, make sure to leave any soft objects out of the crib.)

SIDS remains a risk until your baby is about one year old. Until then, you should always put your baby to sleep on his or her back. After that, you probably won’t be able to control your baby’s sleeping position, and it’s okay to allow them to sleep however they want to.

A very important note about newborn sleep positions

One of the things that drastically increases the risk of SIDS is suddenly putting an infant on his tummy when he is accustomed to sleeping on his back. Research has found that this sudden change can dramatically increase risk.

Why is this important? You need to be firm and clear with anybody else who watches your child. Tell your mom, dad, brothers, sisters, daycare workers, and babysitters that you always want your baby going to bed on his or her back every time. Do not compromise and don’t feel guilty—this is well-researched and clearly documented, and will help keep your baby safe.

Is it ok for my baby to sleep on her side?

Like prone (stomach) sleeping, side sleeping is not recommended. Do not let your newborn sleep on her side. It’s very easy for her to roll over to her tummy.

Conclusion

In summary:

1-5 months: Always put your baby on their back to sleep.

5-12 months: Put your baby on their back when you put them down to sleep, but don’t worry if the baby rolls over in the night.

12 months and older: Your baby is going to sleep however he or she wants to!

It’s simple. Never put your baby to sleep face down during the first year. The best newborn sleeping position is the supine position—on the back. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise!

Do you want to discover all the ways that you can reduce SIDS? Sleep position is just one of the seven most important things to do.

Sleeping on the stomach is not safe for babies aged 1-6 months. According to WHO, it is the cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), when apparently healthy babies die in their sleep. While sleeping on the stomach, the airways can be blocked if the newborn buries his nose in the mattress. Therefore, sleeping on your back is the safest. Experts do not recommend putting the child on its side, since from this position it can roll over onto its stomach.

If the baby has not yet learned to roll over, put him on his back during sleep. Children who have already mastered the roll should be observed and returned to their back if they roll over in their sleep.

After the critical age of 6 months, the baby can take any comfortable position for sleeping, including on the stomach. This posture is safe and acceptable.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of a baby. It is the most common cause of death among children 1–6 months of age, with a peak at 2–4 months. Sleeping on your stomach is one of the risk factors for SIDS.
Further, when the baby grows up and leaves the risk zone, he can sleep in any position convenient for him in the crib. Therefore, the baby must… Read more

Hello! It all depends on age. For example, for a child who cannot roll over from his stomach to his back on his own or turn his head, he is at risk of suffocation. For the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, children under the age of 6 months are recommended to sleep on their backs. Here are the basic rules for sleep hygiene: https://docdeti.ru/baza-znaniy/pravila_bezopasnogo_sna/

The child will not sleep in a way that is uncomfortable for him. So his zone and posture of comfort is like this. You can retrain while sleeping to put a roll of a twisted towel or sheet under it, forcing you to turn on your side or back.

Choosing a posture, place for a bed and other tips

Newborns need protection and help from their parents, even during sleep. The infant may accidentally fall out of bed or roll over and assume a position that makes it hard to breathe.

Another danger is sudden infant death syndrome. Every year in Russia, for no apparent reason, several hundred children under the age of one die. Most often, children die from SIDS at night in their sleep, so scientists recommend paying special attention to the safety of babies at this time. Here are some tips to help make sure your newborn is safe.

🛏️️ Choose a safe place for the crib

At least for the first six months of life, the child should sleep in the same room with his parents: if his health worsens, the child may start calling for help, but quietly due to lack of strength or air.

High air temperature is one of the risk factors for SIDS, so the temperature in the bedroom should be kept at +16-20 °C, optimally +18 °C.

The crib should be placed away from the battery and the air conditioner, and there should not be things around that the child can reach by sticking his hand between the bars

👶️ Put the baby in a separate bed

It is dangerous for a baby to sleep in the same bed with adults: the child can overheat from close contact with the parent’s body. And in a dream, parents can accidentally crush a baby: for example, in 2011-2014 in 10 US states, 51 children under one year old died in this way. There is no unified statistics of such cases in Russia, but they are also mentioned in the news.

Do not put a roll of blanket between an adult and a child as a side: a child can bury his nose in it and suffocate

How to improve your baby’s sleep

🧸 Remove unnecessary things from the crib

There should be a minimum of accessories in the baby’s crib. Ideally, just a mattress and a tightly tucked sheet.

The mattress must be exactly matched to the size of the bed and must not collapse: if the child buries himself in a hole, he may suffocate. It is not necessary to place the mattress at an angle, otherwise the baby may slide down and take a position in which it is difficult to breathe.

Blankets, toys, pillows, and soft bed liners increase the risk of suffocation and SIDS. For example, from 19Between 85 and 2012, 77 babies died in the US due to bumper suffocation, and up to 24% of US SIDS cases are attributed to pillows

How to choose the right mattress

be fenced with bed sides on all four sides. A kid can learn to roll over at any moment, even at night and at a very young age, and suffer from a fall.

Shoulders should reach at least to the child’s armpits. If the height of the bottom is adjustable at the crib, you need to lower it in accordance with the height of the baby

😴 Sleep on your back only

Until a child can roll over, sleeping on his stomach is dangerous for him. In this position, the risk of overheating and hypoxia increases due to the fact that the baby inhales the same air that he exhaled – with a high content of carbon dioxide and a low content of oxygen.

Laying the baby on its side is also undesirable: the baby may roll over on its stomach. Sleeping on your back is also worthwhile for those babies who often spit up: the risk of SIDS outweighs the benefits of sleeping on the stomach or on the side, even for children diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux

🚙 Do not leave your child to sleep in a car seat

At home, do not leave your child to sleep in a car seat or infant carrier. Outside the car, the car seat is not secured and may roll over – this leads to injury and suffocation.

In the car seat, it is important to fasten the baby in accordance with the instructions and not leave the belts loose, otherwise the baby may slide down and assume a position in which he will not get enough air to breathe.

In a baby lounger, a child can also take a position that prevents him from breathing – it is better not to leave the child unattended in such devices and transfer to bed if the baby falls asleep there

🤱 Do not cover the baby’s face in the sling

To make sure the sling is safe for the baby, it is important to monitor the position of the baby’s head. Check that the fabric does not cover the child’s face, his chin is pressed against the parent’s chest, and nothing is squeezing the chest.

The fabric of the sling and the body of the parent additionally warm – this should be taken into account when choosing clothes for the child and wear one layer less

Things for a child up to a year

🍼 Use only safe pacifiers

Sleep sucking on a pacifier is not a risk factor for SIDS. But the features of its design can harm the child.

The plastic circle around the nipple must not cover the baby’s nose and must have holes in it so that the baby can breathe through the mouth. If the pacifier is held on by a strap, it should be short so that it cannot wrap around the baby’s neck

☁️ Choose the cocoon carefully

The surface of the cocoon should be hard enough so that the baby cannot press his nose into it and cut off his access to oxygen. A baby in a cocoon must be secured so as not to accidentally roll over – choose models with straps or zippered pockets.

Unlike a crib, the cocoon is easy to hit and move, so access to the cocoon room should be limited to older children and pets.

Don’t put your baby to sleep in sleep positioners because they usually expect the baby to sleep on their side instead of their back

Six Ways to Include Dads in Baby Showers

As women, we are wonderful at hosting baby showers or sprinkles for moms to celebrate their growing bellies and the life they are carrying inside of them. But often forget that many dads may want to have a place in the baby showers, too. Unfortunately, they may feel it’s culturally acceptable (or manly) to get hyped up about their baby.

So today, I wanted to share my favorite ideas for incorporating dads into baby showers so that they can be a part of the baby’s life from the start of ALL the fun! After all, if we want them to be excited about being a father, we have to make them feel a part of the experience from the beginning. And they likely are not going to ask to be a part of it themselves. Plus, the more involved dads are, the happier their partners are. So it’s mutually beneficial for us all.

The best way of incorporating dad into baby showers that aren’t just for diapers is to have a dual-gender baby shower. Meaning, have the normal shower for the girl but invite the husband and his friends too. And then, of course, have fun finding ways to involve the men. Here are 6 of my favorite ideas:

Come Up with a Fun Theme for Both Men and Women

Join us for the “Women Friend and Men Kin Shower. ” Have the invitation explain that the nature of the shower is to include both sexes. “We want our baby to know that they are surrounded with love and care from not only women in our lives but the men. We want you to be not only friends but also family. So please come and join us. Both of you….”

Another idea would be a “Boys and Toys and Gals and Towels” shower. With this theme, the men can bring their favorite baby toy and the girls can bring soft things like blankets, burp cloths, or clothing. “Men, take time to find a toy you think every baby needs, from blocks to baseballs. We want to see what you think. And women, bring something soft and cozy for the baby to use after playtime.”

Or lastly, incorporate food and gifts into the shower theme with a play on words for a “Chilly Cookoff. The invitation could read, “Join us for a “Chilly” Cookoff Shower in honor of baby Preston and his chilly due date of December 2021. Let’s get him ready for the winter with clothes and blankets while we keep his mommy and daddy warm with your favorite chili recipe.

Serve Non-Traditional Food

Men may not enjoy quiche and baby-shaped cookies quite as much as we do. So for the menu, pick a food theme that seems a little more geared toward men than women. I recently attended a baby sprinkle where we had a crawfish boil. It gave the men a chance to bond and get to know one another while the women chatted. This can take off the edge for men who feel a little reluctant about coming to a baby shower ;). And especially if you give the men a role in preparing the food. “Hey, would you mind being the one to watch over the boiling?”

Create Gift Fun

Don’t assume that all men are capable of is buying diapers. If they’ve had babies, they likely have the go-to supplies they think are best. It is fun to ask men to bring their favorite go-to baby item. And have their wife do the same! Then let the couples in attendance surprise each other with what they brought. As their friends open the gifts, they can explain to the guests why this is their favorite gift. If they do not have children, this can be even more fun to see what they pick.

Make the Men Get Mushy

As one of the shower activities, have both the men and women write the best lesson they ever learned from their parents. The therapist in me loves this! Men are usually less likely to talk about their feelings without being prompted, but they can often surprise us with their insight and emotion when asked. After the advice is written down, you can have the guest of honor read the advice and guess who gave it. Some will be funny, but some will be serious. It not only lets the men feel included but will likely bond the women to the men when hearing things they have probably never shared.

Make the Men Get Creative With a Lullaby

For a fun and creative baby shower game, pick three songs that are hits on the radio. Then have the women and the men divide into groups and choose their favorite song. Next, tell them that their job is to come up with a lullaby to the rhythm and tune of that song. This is a fun way to challenge the men to connect with their inner comfort and nurturing side. If they’re competitive, you might be surprised what they come up with if they know they are competing against the ladies.

Change up the Diaper Shower Theme

And if your husband only feels comfortable with the traditional diaper shower and doesn’t want to hang with the ladies, then give the diaper shower a twist by transforming it into something even more manly. And call it a MUDSLIDE!

Since all things baby-related seem to be related to weather, make the name of the diaper shower a diaper mudslide and use a play on words saying the diapers are getting ready for the ‘MUDSLIDE’ in the baby’s diaper. Because even grown men think talking about poop is funny. So why not incorporate it into one of the biggest realities of newborns? Changing poopy diapers! Ask the men to wear brown, bring dark beer, and then serve them chocolate ice cream mudslides.

Well, that about wraps up my favorite ideas! Have fun getting creative with including your favorite men. Let us know how it goes.

Nanny and dad: a male look

36772

Most often
looking for a babysitter
mom is doing. She, as a rule, controls the nanny and resolves all daily issues with her. The head of the family usually spends most of his time at work and rarely encounters a nanny. However, it is impossible to make sure that the nanny and dad do not intersect at all. Sometimes these two collide and give mom a reason to get nervous… Pomogatel.ru has collected the main possible problems and options for solving them.

Nanny is young and pretty

Many star families have tried this situation on themselves. Babysitters and housekeepers have played fatal roles in the personal lives of actors: Robin Williams, Jude Law, Ethan Hawke, Arnold Schwarzenegger…

But still, this problem is overblown by the yellow press. If the relationship with her husband is really strong, no nanny will destroy them. If you know behind your half a certain tendency to succumb to temptations, it is better to simply spread the straws in advance and choose a nanny far from coquetry in years. Why tempt fate?

Nanny is grouchy and tries to command

Of course, dad doesn’t like it. Mom doesn’t like it either. But a tortured mother can endure the shortcomings of a nanny for a long time. And all because my mother finally went to work and she values her work very much. There will be no nanny – there will be no work. Women who have spent a long time on maternity leave know how difficult it is to cross the threshold of the office after a solid break. And when this step is done
reliable nanny
becomes one of the main allies.

Finding a new nanny is a long story. For this, a mother who is making a career usually has neither the time nor the strength (after all, most of them go to work). In addition, mom knows from her own experience how addictive the home routine is, how hard, thankless and almost endless this work is. Therefore, she is often more condescending about the nanny’s mistakes. Dad has a rather vague idea of homework. It seems to him that there is nothing complicated in this, and therefore the nanny must be perfect. And such nannies, as all mothers know, do not exist!

Try to arrange so that the nanny and the head of the family meet as little as possible. Do not tell your husband that the nanny broke his favorite cup. Take the blame, he will forgive you.

If the nanny doesn’t commit really gross violations, don’t let your husband get involved in petty conflicts with her. He will flare up and fire her, and the search for a new one will fall entirely on your shoulders.

Babysitter annoys dad for no apparent reason

Actually there is a reason. And she’s serious. A man cannot come to terms with the fact that traditionally women’s work in the house is performed not by his beloved wife, but by a strange woman. Moreover, this woman can be wonderful and sweet, she can be quiet, modest and inconspicuous. It is difficult to blame her for annoying a tired earner who has returned from work. Thanks to the efforts of this outside woman, the house is in order, there is a hot dinner on the table, the children are supervised, and the wife has the strength for a career. It seems that the nanny should be appreciated, but he finds fault …

Here you can not do without a serious conversation (which, of course, should not be serious in form, because a rare man loves serious conversations). It is necessary to explain as gently as possible that it is much better when the wife is not exhausted in the end by everyday problems and she has time to make a career, develop, take care of herself and her husband, in the end. At least the last argument should work.

When mother is an indispensable worker

If someone told me a few years ago that I would become a dad on maternity leave, I would hardly have believed it. Daughter Masha is now two years old, she is our first child with my wife. In connection with her birth, the wife stayed at home for only a month – two weeks before the birth and two after. She, as it turned out, was an indispensable employee in her service, so she was not in the mood to leave the decree.

For the first six months, we both continued to work 5/2, and my grandmother, who came to us from another city, helped with her daughter. And then the summer season came and she had to switch to her 6 acres, and we decide the question: dad, that is, me or a nanny?

In favor of a professional nanny, experience and the ability to generally maintain our usual daily routine – home / work / leisure, taking into account the appearance of a child in the family, spoke in favor of a professional nanny.

When I was 32 at the time, before the birth of my daughter, I did not have to deal with babies – feed, walk, put to bed, play, develop, heal, plus be responsible for everyday life, etc. Everything that millions of women do every day, to me it looked like a distant and unfamiliar universe. Therefore, I doubted whether I could handle it. And even if I can, I asked myself: how will our family, relationships and roles in it change, will I be able to combine caring for my daughter and remote work?

My wife and I spent nights reading nannies’ profiles on the Internet, peering at their photos and trying to feel whether this or that woman in our absence is able to take full care of the baby. Despite the many wonderful questionnaires, we did not dare to choose anyone. And it was not at all about nannies – there were very worthy candidates who were ready to work for adequate money. At that moment, we rather lacked the courage and ability to trust anyone outside the inner circle. Therefore, at the family council, we decided that an inexperienced but loving father would try – “native blood” became the main argument in my favor.

Later, walking with my daughter on the playground, I will make a real discovery for myself! It turns out that almost three-quarters of the women walking with children along the boulevards and playgrounds are nannies, and not at all mothers and grandmothers, as it seemed to me before from the outside. And nothing! Children are happy, cheerful, capricious and “show character” no more than those with their mothers. Yes, and nannies, in my now experienced look, manage them no worse than their next of kin. I made friends with some nannies and mothers, we sometimes exchange messages on an important topic: what to wear for a walk today?

My dad has been on maternity leave for a year and a half. For the past couple of months, Masha has been enjoying going to classes at a kids club near her home. That is, twice a week I have an hour and a half break – in a sprint mode, run to the store, do some business outside the home. Everything else we do together with my daughter or I during her daytime sleep.

Here I must admit right away that I did not manage to fully work remotely, as I naively imagined before immersing myself in the process of raising and caring for my daughter. I take on some projects now only sporadically and selectively. I don’t risk taking on permanent work on outsourcing, since with a small child and everyday life it’s quite difficult to meet the deadlines of customers. Briefly, this can be described by the well-known – “not diarrhea, so scrofula.” Teeth, vaccinations, the introduction of complementary foods, a change in sleep and wakefulness as you grow older, etc. I still never cease to be surprised and even perplexed somewhere at how quickly a small person grows and changes in the first years of his life. Parents need to have time to rebuild behind him, and somewhere to act ahead of the curve, to organize space for him to grow. This was my second discovery, certainly the most important in its significance.

So, one day during lunch, we were talking with her grandmother – my mother – via Skype. My daughter was then a year and four months old, and then her grandmother simply says: “What are you feeding her? Give her a spoon, let her eat.” I gave and the child quite easily and willingly mastered this skill. Then I thought: I would have been spoon-feeding her for a long time if I hadn’t received ridiculously simple and seemingly superficial advice from my mother.

I could have guessed it myself with a spoon! But do not rush to throw slippers at me! How many of you have not acted on autopilot on maternity leave? Yes, the child grows by leaps and bounds, which does not cancel the monotony of the process as a whole. The life of a mother or father on maternity leave, without grandmothers, nannies and other assistants, to put it mildly, is not very diverse. In addition, allow for the fact that the child is the first and some things that are instinctive for a woman are not built into the “basic package” at all.

I will not call this path easy. You can get through it only with patience. I needed it especially during my wife’s recent business trip. We spent almost two weeks together with the child, and our mother supported us via Skype. After her return, we conferred and decided that it was time to resume the search for a nanny. The daughter has already grown up, and it will not be so scary for us to entrust the care of her to an assistant (but I will choose myself, of course).

Babysitting From Home (Pros, Cons, Laws & Requirements)

It would be awesome if you could babysit out of your own home. But is that something you can actually make a reality, or is it just fantasy?

Can you babysit from home? Yes, you can babysit from home. Although there may be some additional restrictions compared to traditional babysitting jobs at another family’s house. Depending on where you live, you might need additional licensing or certifications to babysit out of your own home.

In this article, we’ll look at the key differences between babysitting from home and running a daycare, special restrictions that might apply in your area, insurance and other costs, plus lots more.

What’s The Difference Between Babysitting From Home and Running A Daycare?

Isn’t babysitting from home just running a daycare service?

When you’re providing childcare out of your home, the line between babysitting and running a daycare can become a bit of a confusing grey area.

Here are some key things that separate a daycare service from a babysitter.

How Much Time Are You Spending Caring For Children?

Daycares provide consistent childcare on a regular basis. Usually daily. Parents might have to pay a fee to a daycare center even if your child misses a day.

Babysitting, on the other hand, is more of an occasional, short-term thing and typically isn’t done on a daily basis.

If you’re looking to start a babysitting business, you need to read my article: How to setup a babysitting business for some useful tips to get started.

What Level of Education, Certifications, and Training Do You Have?

Most daycare workers have post-secondary education related to child development or education. They are generally certified in both First Aid and CPR, and may even have food handler’s certification and other training.

Babysitters generally have less training. They may or may not have CPR or First Aid training, and they usually have little or no formal education related to children.

Babysitters may or may not be required to have background checks completed. However, most states require ongoing childcare providers who provide consistent care to have a background check completed.

What Rate Do You Charge?

Babysitters usually charge more when you look at their pay at an hourly rate.

Daycares usually work out to be a cheaper hourly rate (potentially 3 times cheaper – a babysitter will typically charge $10 or more per hour, while a daycare may charge $3.50.) However, daycares may also require you to agree to a certain number of hours per week or month, making them cost more overall.

Did you know that babysitters with more experience and qualifications can charge a higher rate? Read my Babysitting Rate Guide for more details.

What’s Your Availability Like?

Daycares normally have very consistent and reliable schedules when it comes to availability. Babysitters on the other hand usually don’t guarantee that they’ll be available on specific days or between certain hours.

How Many Children Are You Supervising?

Babysitting is typically a more 1-on-1 service provided just for your child, or the children in your family.

Home daycares may provide childcare for children from multiple different families at a time.

Who Can Babysit From Home?

Most governments don’t have specific laws or requirements regarding babysitters. Normally they fall under the same general guidelines of other childcare providers such as daycare operators, teachers, and others.

Generally, I would recommend that babysitters try to hold themselves to the same legal standards that are required for daycares in their area.

Admittedly, there are lots of babysitters out there providing illegal services without the appropriate licenses or paperwork. While the chance of getting caught may feel quite low, particularly if you’re just babysitting for family members or friends, the risk isn’t non-existent. All it takes is one of the parents you babysit for to claim your babysitting services as a child expense on their taxes to get the authorities interested in you.

Are There Any Home Babysitting Restrictions in the United States or Canada?

In Canada, the only real limit on unlicensed babysitting or daycare is the number of children that you’re able to watch. You’re only able to care for 5 or fewer children under the age of 6, and you need to include any of your own children in that amount. You also aren’t able to care for more than 2 children under the age of 2 at a given time.

In the United States, things start to get a lot more complicated. There are numerous different rules and laws for each state, with a lot of variation from state to state.

Here’s a good state-by-state breakdown of the licensing threshold for family child care homes caring for unrelated children.

It really varies what is required to run a small-scale babysitting business in different states. About a third of states require licensing even if you’re only babysitting one child in your home. Other states may allow you to watch up to 7 children at once without any kind of license.

Because of the variation and complexity involved, I recommend contacting your appropriate state agency to figure out if you need a license to babysit from home, and how to become licensed. There could be other requirements as well, such as special training or teacher certification that you need. You may also need to show proof of CPR and First Aid certification or background checks.

Are There Any Home Babysitting Restrictions in Australia?

If you live in Australia and you’re 18 years or older, you need a Working With Children Check for any babysitting, aside from doing unpaid sitting for family members or friends.

A WWCC checks your criminal records across the entire country. It also looks at any professional conduct filings made by prominent institutions. Even once you pass the WWCC, there is still an ongoing monitoring process for applicants.

Your Working With Children Check takes about three weeks from when you apply until your application gets approved. It’s valid for five years from the date it’s issued unless it gets revoked.

Are There Any Home Babysitting Restrictions in the United Kingdom?

Requirements of home babysitters in the UK are arguably even more strict than those of Australia. The UK equivalent of a WWCC is applying to become a registered childminder.

You are required to register as a childminder if all of these conditions apply:

  • You look after children for more than 2 hours per day.
  • The children you watch are under the age of 8.
  • You look after them in your own home.
  • You get paid to look after them.

You aren’t required to register as a childminder in the UK if you look after children between 6 pm and 2 am and it isn’t in your own home. Typically most babysitters who offer services out of their own home will fall under the requirements and need to register.

The costs associated with this process are quite steep. To become a registered childminder, you’ll need to pay up to a £103 registration fee each year, plus a £52.10 criminal record check, £90 health check, first aid and childcare training that will cost approximately £110 to £400, plus public liability insurance of £25 to £100.

Altogether you’re looking at well over £300 just to get started. So I would highly recommend against babysitting within your own home in the UK. Only babysitting in other people’s homes in the evening will help you avoid having to pay annual fees to be a registered childminder.

However, some parents might want a registered carer as a babysitter even if you’re babysitting at their home. That’s because only the babysitting services of registered carers can be deducted as an expense on their taxes.

Get Insurance To Babysit At Home

You hope that nothing bad ever happens while you’re babysitting. But in case a child gets seriously injured or there’s any other kind of emergency, you want to be sure that you have insurance to cover yourself for accidents, damages, and liability related to your childcare.

You’ve probably already got homeowner’s insurance, but it’s unlikely that your policy will cover you for anything that happens during the course of your home babysitting. So you’ll need to get extra coverage to be sure you comply with any laws in your country that require it, as well as to protect yourself.

You’ll want basic liability or umbrella coverage for generic things like property damage, fire, theft, or personal injury. Plus you’ll also want health insurance, abuse and molestation coverage, worker’s compensation, and hazard insurance.

I recommend meeting with a professional insurance agent to get advice specific to your area and be sure that you’ve got a personalized plan that meets your babysitting needs.

For more insurance-related information, be sure to read my other article: Do Babysitters & Nannies Need Insurance?

Work Out Other Costs of Babysitting At Home

If you decide to babysit from your own home, you’ll have some additional expenses that you wouldn’t normally need to consider when babysitting at a client’s home.

At a bare minimum, you’ll probably need food for the children. Even if it’s just snacks. Younger kids need to eat smaller portions every few hours.

What do parents expect of babysitters regarding food? Read our article for the answer: Do babysitters provide food?

If you’re babysitting younger children, expect to potentially spend more on diapers and other supplies. Parents may provide their own diaper bags when they leave their child with you, or they may reimburse you for your own expenses. Either way, it’s always a good idea to have some extras on hand just in case.

If you’re really serious about babysitting from home and will be running something more akin to a daycare, you may even make alterations to your house. For example, painting a special playroom, childproofing, and more.

You should have an emergency first aid kit on hand in your home as well.

At Kidsit we recommend this first aid kit, it’s packed full of supplies that are perfect for babysitting!

Get & Keep Home Babysitting Clients

If you’re looking to start offering babysitting services out of your home, the first step you’ll need to take is finding some clients.

You might offer a similar occasional service that a regular babysitter would, or you might be babysitting for specific children and families on a more regular basis.

The people who are looking for a home babysitter are likely different than those who want a sitter to come and babysit at their own home. However, the process of finding clients is not all that different.

Start off by reaching out to family members and friends, because word of mouth is usually the best and easiest marketing tactic for babysitters.

You can also join a babysitting association or website to network and advertise your services. Social media is a great tool to connect with prospective clients in your area for free.

Finding repeat clients is ideal because you’ll have clients coming back time and time again. Remember that it’s often a lot easier to keep a family that you already babysit for than to try and find a new one!

Some home babysitters like to specialize in a certain age-range of children. Some sitters find dealing with babies easier, while some prefer older kids. It’s all about what you’re comfortable with. Although babysitting for a wide range of ages means more potential clients who would want to work with you.

Set Your Home Babysitting Prices

Setting your rates as a home babysitter can be tricky. A lot of the same rules that would apply to a regular babysitter are still valid considerations, although there are a couple of extra things you should consider as well.

To start off, it’s a good idea to ask other babysitters in your area what they charge to decide on your own rate. Keep your years of experience and other factors in mind.

How many children you’re watching is always a big one to think about. Usually, babysitters will have an initial rate, and then add $1 – $2 to their price per hour for each additional child.

The age of the children also matters. Infants require a lot more one-on-one attention and care, and you have a lot more responsibilities. I would definitely charge more for a baby than a more autonomous 9 or 10-year-old.

Other factors include the time of day, the length of time you’re babysitting for, any special needs, and potentially other factors as well.

There are also some factors that are specific to home babysitting that you’ll need to think about.

Since you’re babysitting from home, you won’t need to spend money on gas or other travel expenses to get to your job. You’ll also probably save about 10 to 15 minutes of travel time that you normally would need to spend going to the client’s home and back. So you may want to lower your rate slightly to account for this.

If you’re babysitting at home full-time, you’ll also want to consider the going rate for daycares and other childcare options in your area. If you’re going to be competitive, you’ll almost certainly need to charge less than a licensed daycare that employes fully trained staff.

Summary – The Pros and Cons of Starting a Home-Based Childcare Business

Babysitting from home comes with its own unique pros and cons to keep in mind:

Pros

  • No travel time. You don’t have to get in the car or take a bus to your babysitting job. Clients come to you.
  • You can watch your own children at the same time. This can be a great reason to offer babysitting services. If you’re taking care of your own children anyway, what’s one more? (Keep in mind that your children count toward the total number of children you can watch, which will vary based on where you live.)
  • You get the flexibility to make your own schedule. You can offer babysitting services during regular business hours, or you can choose to babysit evenings and weekends while keeping another full-time job. You have more flexibility in terms of taking time off too.
  • It might be more convenient for parents. If you’re watching children during the day, it might be easier for parents to just drop kids off at your house on the way to work, instead of waiting for you to arrive at their home.

Cons

  • You’re left with the mess. When you have a babysitting job at someone else’s home, you try your best to keep things tidy. But when you leave at the end of your shift, it’s pretty much out of your hands. But watching children at your own home means you’re 100% responsible for cleaning up. You have to live with it!
  • It’s more complicated than regular babysitting. Choosing to babysit from home means you’ll need to look into the laws in your area, think about getting extra insurance, and other licensing requirements that can be either time-consuming or difficult.
  • Your whole house is a play area. You’ll need to make your house age-appropriate and safe for children. That means safety covers for all your electrical outlets, putting away sharp objects, child-proofing your drawers and cupboards, and more. You’ll also want to make sure your yard is safe if children will be playing outside. Your home will need to really be dedicated to kids.
  • Extra costs. When babysitting at home, you might be expected to provide snacks and toys for kids. That’s in addition to any startup costs like insurance, licenses, and any alterations you need to make to your home.

Conclusion

Babysitting at home has some definite advantages, like not having to travel to your babysitting job. Your clients bring their kids to you!

But there are also some extra things that you need to consider when deciding to babysit from home.

Can you babysit from home? Definitely! Although there may be some restrictions.

Depending on where you live, the laws might be different babysitting at another family’s home compared to watching their children at your own house. You may need special licenses or certification to watch even one child in your home in specific states or countries.

As a home babysitter, you may incur some extra costs such as having to buy food for kids or toys for kids you watch as well.

Overall, babysitting from home can be a reasonable option. But you should check your local laws and requirements before making a decision.

The popularity of home education and upbringing will return. As a rule, such a choice is made by mothers and fathers who are not satisfied with the quality of preschool or school education, who have their own clear idea of how the child should grow and develop, how he should eat, with whom to communicate, where and how to spend time, and etc.

“I don’t have any pleasant associations with kindergarten, I felt bad there as a child,” says Nina, mother of three sons. not out of 30, but out of 10 people, I still think that it is better for children not to be separated from their mother.Of course, when the third child was born, it became more difficult for me, but the problem was solved
with the help of a nanny. While I am engaged in the younger, she takes two older boys to developmental classes, and they do not have any lagging behind their peers and a lack of communication! I won’t send the younger one to kindergarten either.”

Most important
for a family child
– provide more versatile communication, – says Karina Alexandrovna, a nanny with six years of experience in Moscow families. Mothers with similar views mainly communicate with each other, and children have little idea that other children in the same entrance, for example, live a completely different life. And in no case should you tell a child that another life is worse or better, you just need to show that it exists. I was a nanny in a family of strict vegetarians, when the oldest child found out that other people eat meat, he was shocked . .. “.

What to be prepared for if your pupil is homeschooled?

  • lead to developmental classes;
  • to devote a lot of time to developing games and activities, to master development methods trusted by the child’s parents;
  • never criticize or condemn employers out loud in front of a child;
  • the most important thing is to respect the views of the employer and not try to remake the family!

“For the first three months I was pleased with the nanny,” says Tatyana, a yoga teacher, a staunch vegetarian, and a mother of two aged girls who don’t go to kindergarten. how she, in the presence of my daughters, grumbles under her breath: “Your mother is a good-for-nothing … she didn’t even send you to the garden …” and then a lot, a lot about the fact that I feed the children in the wrong way, dress them incorrectly, and soon why – then I take the unfortunate babies to a terrible distance to torture (we were just going on vacation with the whole family. ) I swallowed the insult, but after about a month and a half the nanny got caught again – now the recorder recorded her conversation, apparently with a friend, the nanny complained not about working conditions , not on a bad relationship, but on the fact that my husband and I are strange! According to her, everything is not like with people … And this conversation took place during her working hours, that is, in my house in the presence of my children! I told about this husband and we decide maybe our family doesn’t need such a helper.”

It is important that after demonstrating the zeal to fulfill all your mother’s orders strictly, after passing the trial days, you do not turn to lectures and displeased grimaces. Why make baby puree by hand when you can just buy ready-made in the store? Why wash and iron homemade diapers when the whole world has long switched to store-bought disposable ones? How can you not give your child any sweet / red meat / multivitamins / anything else, from your point of view, absolutely necessary? Why open all the windows in the house when it’s already cold outside? How can you trust homeopathy? etc.

Remember that you are, of course, entitled to your own opinion, but it is worth voicing it at work only if asked to do so. This category of employers rarely asks for this. Such parents already have to go against the system in a certain sense. Many do not understand and criticize them.
Arguing with your own assistant is the last thing an employer wants to waste time on.
Therefore, if you come across just such a mother, get ready to either fully and sincerely share her beliefs, or keep your opinion to yourself.

Interesting facts about nannies

When it comes to nannies, many of us remember Mary Poppins, who easily got along with children and adults and was a jack of all trades. But unlike the fairy-tale heroine, for real nannies, childcare is not entertainment, but the main and very difficult income.

History

Initially, babysitting was not a permanent job. It was a small part-time job for nurses who looked after other people’s children in their free time. However, later professional nannies became permanent assistants in the homes of wealthy people with many children, and some of them managed to raise several generations in their lives.

Responsibilities

The main task of a nanny is to care for and raise children. But sometimes, in addition to their direct duties, the nanny performs the functions of a housekeeper for a fee.

Opening hours

Usually, parents hire a nanny for a year, after which they either renew the contract with her, or break up and look for a replacement. Moreover, both wealthy Americans and wealthy Russian families prefer European nannies, who are ordered from domestic staff recruitment agencies.

Advantages

If, for some reason, the mother does not have time to take care of the children, the nanny provides them with full care, which is important at the initial stage of growing up the kids. In addition, the nanny can relieve parents of some household chores. And although it will cost extra money, many are willing to pay for such assistance.

Warnings

Even if you are hiring a nanny through a well-known, reputable agency, you need to check it through all possible channels. Such a person should have only positive characteristics from past jobs and should not have a criminal record. Keep in mind, there are agencies that immediately charge people for employment and do not pay due attention to screening candidates for a particular vacancy. And although these are one-day agencies, there is always a chance to run into them. By the way, here is one of our previous publications /nayti-nyanyu-v-moskve-ne-tak-slozhno-kak-kazhetsya.html, where we talked about the benefits of good nanny recruiting agencies.

Dangerous children’s clothing: how to identify and replace

Jackets with large hoods

Ophthalmologists say that when a large hood is put on the head, the field of view of a person is halved. Due to such a small viewing radius, it is difficult, for example, to see a moving car when crossing the road or go around another obstacle that has arisen on the side of the child.

Replacement: jackets with hoods, which have a drawstring on the front edge. nine0005

Demi-season and winter shoes with rubber soles

Rubber soles slip in wet and frosty weather, besides, it is inferior to other types of soles in heat-shielding properties.

Replacement: shoes with soles made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are non-slip materials, durable, elastic, warm.

Low waisted skirts and trousers

The belt of such models of skirts and trousers is located significantly below the waistline and presses the nerve endings from the waist to the sole, and also disrupts blood circulation in the lower part of the body. It is believed that such models can harm reproductive function. nine0005

Replacement: items with a belt around the waist. They are comfortable and always on trend!

Narrow hat

How do you know if a hat is too tight for a child? After it, a red stripe remains on the forehead of the baby. Too tight headgear squeezes the head and prevents the flow of blood and nutrients to the hair follicles. As a result, you can get a headache and skin irritation. And, if a narrow hat is also made of “synthetics”, then in general it’s a guard: a greenhouse effect is formed and the scalp sweats a lot. nine0005

Replacement: cap to fit the head (conscientious manufacturers indicate the size of the head in centimeters on the tags, besides, the cap does not have to be pulled with force). It is better to choose a hat for a child from natural materials with the addition of, for example, acrylic.

Turtlenecks “under the throat”

Turtlenecks with a too narrow neck are inconvenient to put on, the head gets stuck all the time, which makes the child (and parents) nervous. Due to squeezing the throat, blood circulation is disturbed, headaches may occur. nine0005

Replacement: jumpers with closure on the shoulder or sweaters with an elastic stand-up collar. The child himself will perfectly cope with the turtleneck, which stretches well. And it goes well with dresses, sundresses, vests and jackets, skirts, jeans and trousers.

Fingerless gloves (glovelets)

This is a practical and stylish accessory for adult fashionistas, but not for a child. Pediatricians complain that parents often come to them with varying degrees of frostbite in children of the upper phalanges of the fingers. nine0005

Replacement: closed finger gloves. Cozy and warm. It’s great if they are on an elastic band or lace, then the baby will not lose them.

Short sweaters and jackets that expose the lower back

It is quite obvious that in such models the lower back remains naked and unprotected, that is, the entire genitourinary system, part of the spine, skin, blood vessels. Well, if so many organs are exposed to cold and frost, then a lot of diseases can be caught. nine0005

Replacement: regular (cropped) sweatshirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and jumpers. The main purpose of which is the preservation of heat and, as a result, health.

Underwear made of synthetic materials

100% “synthetics” are absolutely not hygienic: they are poorly washed and practically do not absorb moisture.

Replacement: cotton underwear with the addition of this same synthetic thread. Moreover, in children’s underwear, the use of synthetic fibers (elastane, viscose) is permissible no more than 5%. Such products “breathe” and do not lose their original shape. nine0005

The room of the child is very important for his development, because it is known that the intelligence and creativity of children is mainly influenced by the place where they spend most of their time. Every parent wants to create a bright, uncluttered space for play and homework. However, due to the peculiarities of the layout of the apartment, sometimes we are forced to give not the largest and most comfortable room for the nursery.

Don’t worry, with a little inspiration and some tricks, you can easily and inexpensively transform a long, narrow nursery into a fun, stylish, and organized space.

Designing a narrow children’s room: effective ways to save space

Whether you are looking for ideas for a girl’s bedroom or a boy’s bedroom, the rules for organizing space will be the same.

Firstly, in any children’s room it is necessary to distinguish three main zones – recreation, work and play.

Secondly, there should be enough light in the room. Make sure window openings are clear. Provide enough artificial light: general and local. Keep in mind that 200 lux is the minimum allowable value for a children’s room.

Thirdly, safety. Avoid furniture that poses a risk to the child. For example, glass furniture or furniture with sharp corners will not work, especially for a narrow room. In addition, it is best to choose furniture with soft-closing hinges so as not to pinch your fingers when using cabinet doors and drawers.

If the children’s room is narrow, you should think over every centimeter of the area in advance and explore all possible options for arranging furniture. Pay attention to the following recommendations:
nine0005

  1. The bed should be placed exclusively along long walls.

  2. If there is a loggia in a narrow nursery, the best solution would be to insulate it and attach it to the common area, organizing a place for classes or games there.

  3. If the room is very long, you can divide it into two zones using a shelving partition.

  4. If the children’s room is also small, the obvious solution is to put a loft bed, and use the area under it for games or a workplace.

  5. Arrange the furniture so that the passage is, on the one hand, along the entire room. Agree, walking in a zigzag is not very convenient.

  6. Use any round object in the room. For example, a single round basket on the floor can do wonders for breaking up straight lines and creating coziness.

  7. Use the possibility of vertical storage in a narrow nursery. You can hang different combinations of shelves on the wall, this will significantly save space on the floor.

Selection of a color palette for the interior of a long narrow children’s room

One of the first tasks that arises at the stage of planning the interior of a narrow long children’s room is the visual correction of the room. It is necessary to make the shape more square. To do this, reduce the long walls, and increase the short ones.

To do this, long walls are pasted over or painted in a light color. From prints, you can use a small pattern, vertical stripes, photo wallpapers with your favorite muted color plot. Short walls in a narrow children’s room, on the contrary, can be decorated in a more saturated color, with a large pattern. As a result of this combination, the shape of the room will become more harmonious.
nine0005

Also, using a darker material for the floor and completely light walls will visually expand the space.

It is very important how many colors you use in the children’s room and how you combine them. Some colors are able to relax, others stimulate activity. If you decide to add a bright accent, do not make it too big. The accent should be placed in the game zone, but for the sleep zone, give preference to a calm shade. Here are some good color schemes for a child’s room:
nine0005

  • White

White color is the most versatile option for both children’s and adult rooms. It contributes to a visual increase in area and has a positive effect on mood. Considering that we are planning a room for a child, we advise you to dilute the total white with interesting wallpaper in the Scandinavian style.

  • Orange and gray

A rich two-tone solution in a child’s room can also be a key design idea. For example, a combination of pastel gray and orange will fill the room with vitality and energy. This option is suitable for creative children and teenagers.
nine0005

  • Blue

The presence of blue is often welcomed by designers when designing children’s rooms. It relieves stress and generally has a positive effect on the overall physical condition. But at the same time, cold tones should be used very carefully. To make the room more comfortable, it is best to add warm colors in the form of textiles or decor.

In the photo: Children’s textiles

  • Yellow

Warm colors are a great choice for decorating a child’s room. All shades of yellow stimulate mental activity, have a positive effect on vision, and improve mood. But if your child is impulsive, prone to frequent mood swings, then choose calmer, whitened tones. Children’s furniture in sunny shades will add playfulness and even more cheerfulness to the interior.

  • Green

Green tones are real color therapy for a child. Green stabilizes blood pressure, helps to concentrate, normalizes breathing, promotes sound and healthy sleep. A great option for those who design a house in an eco-style.

Psychologist’s comment

Child psychologist

Olga Danilenko

It is possible to distinguish study, play and sleeping areas not only with the help of shelving partitions, but also by creating a space with a different emotional message and mood. This can be done with a play of colors and accessories. nine0005

For example, a sleeping area – in pastel, warm shades, textiles with a velvety, soft surface, subdued light from a sconce or night lamp. Study area in calm, but more businesslike colors: blue, green, light gray. Emphasis on information posters: maps, charts, tables. In the play area – bright, active colors due to textiles or toys. This will help the child to switch more easily from study to rest or games and vice versa.

Original ideas for a narrow children’s room for a girl

Oh girls, girls. .. The first thing that comes to mind when we think of a nursery design for a girl is cute decor and soft colors.

A great idea would be to opt for light-colored furniture in a classic or Scandinavian style, such a room will instill a craving for beauty in a child.

A bed for a narrow room is better to choose a wall-mounted one, with drawers for storage. Also, do not forget about a spacious wardrobe, and a shelf above the bed is suitable for storing books.
nine0005

In the photo: Blooming Classic Set

It would not be superfluous to put a chest of drawers in the room, on which you can install a mirror. Get a functional and beautiful headset.

Pictured: Sweet Classic Set

What is the difference between a girl’s room and a boy’s room? Of course, an abundance of cute accessories and cozy textiles: a beautiful bedspread, bright pillows, a fluffy carpet and girly curtains.

Any girl will be delighted with beautiful vases, caskets and flowers, so feel free to decorate the room together with your daughter!

Do not forget about the desktop and the right chair. Since children spend a lot of time studying, equip a place to study in the brightest place in the room, near the window.

Recommendations for decorating a narrow children’s room for a boy

Furniture for a boy should be functional. In a narrow children’s room, make the most of the space: plenty of hanging shelves and a rack for storing toys and magazines will not be superfluous.

Pictured: Cozy Newton Gray Set

The interior of the room can be great to beat with your son’s favorite theme with the help of stylish printed furniture.

Pictured: Newton Gray Aviator Workspace and Newton Gray Cabinet

Given that the boys are very active and often invite friends to visit, the furniture should be securely fastened to the wall, and it is better to choose textiles that are durable and non-staining.

Interior design basics for a narrow nursery for two children

When arranging a children’s room for two children, first of all, you should focus on their age. It is good if the difference between them is small and the needs of children do not differ much from each other. You can simply pick up furniture from one collection in duplicate.
nine0005

When choosing a bed, you should pay attention to the bunk version or the loft bed with a sofa below. Thus, there will be enough space for the remaining zones.

As for the study area, there are two options, depending on the size of the room:

But what if the difference in the age of the children is significant, or if a boy and a girl live together? It is best to delimit the space of the room with a shelving or cabinet. So each child will have a private space
nine0005

You can also arrange two corners, consisting of a loft bed and a study area below them in different parts of the room. Thus, in the middle of the room there will be a place for games.

Important! Select and install all pieces of furniture in accordance with the growth of the child. This applies to both chairs and tables, as well as beds, cabinets, shelves. It is very important that the child himself can get and put everything he needs, reach all the shelves and be able to open all the doors on his own. Today, a great option for children’s rooms is furniture that “grows” with the child from a very early age – for example, adjustable chairs and tables. They will help maintain a healthy posture and exercise comfortably.
nine0005

When considering design ideas for your child’s room, remember that children’s selection criteria are different from ours. First of all, the room should bring joy to the child, become his corner of privacy and a source of pride in front of friends. Therefore, ask your son or daughter how they see their future room and create a magical place together.

Your baby’s growth and development – 2 months old

beginning of content

5-minute read

Listen

Your 2-month-old is growing fast and becoming more alert. They will be making more sounds and getting more skilled at moving their body. They will still be crying a lot – but you’ve probably already seen that magic first smile (usually at 6 weeks) which somehow makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Your 2-month-old

By 2 months, your baby will have put on a lot of weight and may be looking round and chubby. As their muscles develop, their arms and legs start to move more freely, stretching out to make them seem taller and leaner.

During their first 2 months, your baby is growing very quickly. They will keep growing at this rate, probably gaining about 900g and growing 2. 5 cm to 3.8 cm every month.

Babies often have a growth spurt at about 6 weeks. This might make them more fussy because they want to eat more than usual. It might feel like you’re feeding all the time, especially at certain times of the day. You can sometimes tell your baby is hungry if they’re sticking their tongue out or sucking. If they doze off or turn their head away, they’re probably full.

At 6 to 8 weeks, your baby will have their scheduled vaccinations – 2 injections and the oral rotavirus vaccine.

Understanding baby growth charts

A growth chart helps you and your doctor keep track of how your baby is growing.

What can your baby do?

By 2 months your baby will have discovered their fingers and hands. They will hold their hands open and grab an object (although they don’t know how to let go yet!) They might also clasp both hands together.

2-month-old babies will start to learn how to coordinate their movements. Instead of the jerky arm and leg movements that made when they were born, they can move more smoothly and in more of a circular motion. They will kick both legs strongly and will be very wriggly. They may even roll over, so don’t ever leave them alone on a change table.

Their neck will be getting stronger all the time. During tummy time they might be lifting their head and moving it from side to side. Some babies can even lift their chest off the ground by now.

Some (though very few) babies can sleep through the night by the time they reach 2 months. But even if you’re not one of the lucky parents or carers, your baby will at least be sleeping for longer stretches at a time. They’ll probably be having 2 to 4 long sleeps and will be more awake and alert during the day — although babies’ sleep patterns still vary widely at this age.

Your baby’s eyes, which may have been crossed when they were younger, move together most of the time now. They will clearly recognise you, will look at you when you talk to them, and can follow you with their eyes. They will love looking at your face and will be giving you some lovely smiles. They will like looking at objects with more complex patterns and colours.

They will also be making a lot more sounds and gurgling, including sounds like ‘a’ or ‘o’, and they will seem to listen to you and talk back to you.

How can I help my baby develop?

As your baby develops more of a rhythm, you’ll find they are awake more during the day. This gives you more time to interact with them and help them develop. Spend plenty of time reading to them, singing, and talking. That way they’ll get used to sounds and words and will start to develop language and communication skills.

You can play with them by letting them look at and feel a variety of objects with different designs, colours, and shapes. Plastic toys and soft balls work well.

They will love looking at you, so make sure you smile at them a lot. It releases ‘feel-good’ chemicals in your baby’s body and helps them to feel safe and secure. You could also give your baby a massage to relax them. After a bath is a good time.

Continue with 1 to 5 minutes tummy time to strengthen their neck and upper body. It will help them develop the muscles they’ll need later to sit and crawl. But always put your baby to sleep on their back.

Development problem signs

Babies develop at a different rate. At 2 months, talk to your doctor or maternal child health nurse if:

  • they aren’t smiling by 8 weeks
  • they don’t calm down, even for a little while, when you pick them up to comfort them
  • one side of their body seems to be stronger than the other
  • they’re still holding their fingers in a tight fist
  • sudden noises don’t startle them
  • they aren’t feeding properly
  • they’re floppy or stiff

Where can I go for help?

If you are worried or would like to discuss any issues with your baby’s development, speak to your doctor or child health nurse.

Baby teething symptoms – NHS

When it comes to teething, all babies are different. But your baby will probably get their first tooth some time during their first year.

Find out how to spot when your baby is teething and what order your baby’s teeth are likely to appear in.

When do babies start teething?

Some babies are born with their first teeth. Others start teething before they are 4 months old, and some after 12 months. But most babies start teething at around 6 months.

Teething symptoms

Baby teeth sometimes emerge with no pain or discomfort at all.

At other times, you may notice:

  • their gum is sore and red where the tooth is coming through
  • they have a mild temperature of less than 38C
  • they have 1 flushed cheek
  • they have a rash on their face
  • they’re rubbing their ear
  • they’re dribbling more than usual
  • they’re gnawing and chewing on things a lot
  • they’re more fretful than usual
  • they’re not sleeping very well

Read tips on how to help your teething baby.

Some people think that teething causes other symptoms, such as diarrhoea, but there’s no evidence to support this.

You know your baby best. Get medical advice if they have any symptoms that are causing you concern. You can call NHS 111 or contact a GP.

Read more about spotting the signs of serious illness in babies and toddlers.

What order do baby teeth appear in?

Here’s a rough guide to how babies’ teeth usually emerge:

  • bottom incisors (bottom front teeth) – these are usually the first to come through, usually at around 5 to 7 months
  • top incisors (top front teeth) – these tend to come through at about 6 to 8 months
  • top lateral incisors (either side of the top front teeth) – these come through at around 9 to 11 months
  • bottom lateral incisors (either side of the bottom front teeth) – these come through at around 10 to 12 months
  • first molars (back teeth) – these come through at around 12 to 16 months
  • canines (between the lateral incisors and the first molars) – these come through at around 16 to 20 months
  • second molars – these come through at around 20 to 30 months

Most children will have all of their milk teeth by the time they are between 2 and 3 years old.

Respiratory distress syndrome of newborns – description, signs, treatment, prevention and diagnosis
Respiratory distress syndrome of newborns (respiratory disorder syndrome) is non-infectious pathological processes (primary atelectasis, hyaline membrane disease, edematous hemorrhagic syndrome) that form in the prenatal and early neonatal periods of a child’s development and manifest as respiratory failure. The incidence of respiratory distress depends on the degree of prematurity and averages 60% in children born at a gestational age of less than 28 weeks, 15-20% – at a period of 32-36 weeks and 5% – at a period of 37 weeks or more. With rational nursing of such children, mortality approaches 10%.

Features

Most children are born in a state of asphyxia and congenital hypoxia, but respiratory disorders may not appear immediately, but several hours after birth. Typical are pronounced signs of respiratory failure: shortness of breath with a respiratory rate of 60 or more per minute (often with aperiodic breathing), cyanosis (perioral, acrocyanosis, generalized), pallor of the skin, participation in the act of breathing of auxiliary muscles (tension of the wings of the nose, retraction compliant places of the chest – intercostal spaces, xiphoid process of the sternum, retraction of the supraclavicular fossae), chest rigidity, sometimes foam at the mouth, difficult “grunting” breath (glottis spasm), swelling of the cheeks. There is a decrease in motor activity, hyporeflexia, muscle hypotension. For early detection and assessment of the severity of respiratory disorders in newborns, the Silverman scale is used. The assessment is made in dynamics every 6 hours for 2-3 days.

As the disease progresses, respiratory disorders and symptoms of depression of the nervous system increase, cyanosis intensifies, apnea, grunting exhalation and paradoxical breathing appear (when exhaling, the anterior lower chest is retracted and the abdomen protrudes), diffuse crepitus. Often there are local and generalized edema; frothy, sometimes bloody discharge from the mouth. The cardiovascular system is affected, tachycardia, muffled heart sounds are observed, fetal communications with the right-hand shunt persist, signs of pulmonary hypertension increase, cardio- and hepatomegaly develops.

Description

It develops mainly in premature babies from mothers with a burdened obstetric history (cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, nephropathy, placental pathology, uterine bleeding). Intrauterine hypoxia, asphyxia and hypercapnia during childbirth are important in the presence of lung tissue immaturity. Under the influence of hypoxia and hypercapnia, a violation of the pulmonary circulation occurs, the interalveolar septa are impregnated with serous fluid with the release of plasma components, in particular fibrin, into the lumen of the alveoli. The formation of hyaline membranes is also possible as a result of a decrease in the fibrinolytic activity of the blood. There is also a lack or a sharp decrease in the activity of the anti-atelectatic factor (surfactant), which contributes to the occurrence of atelectasis. Of certain importance is the deficiency of plasminogen, alpha2-macroglobulin and the development of local or disseminated intravascular coagulation. Underdevelopment of the elastic tissue of the lung, immaturity of the alveoli, aspiration of amniotic fluid and mucus are noted, especially in very premature babies.

Diagnostics

The diagnosis of respiratory distress is based on clinical findings. It can be predicted based on the study of the content of lecithin or thromboplastic activity of amniotic fluid.

If the ratio of levels of sphingomiapine – lecithin in the amniotic fluid is more than 2.0, then the probability of developing respiratory distress is 2%, if less than 2.0-50%, if less than 1.0-100%. A simple lung maturity test, the Clements “foamy test” with gastric contents obtained by probing, can also be used.

Differential diagnosis is carried out with pneumonia, malformations of the lungs and heart, intracranial birth trauma, diaphragmatic hernia.

Treatment

First of all, it is the prevention of cooling (the latter reduces or stops the synthesis of surfactant). Immediately after birth, the child is wrapped and placed under a radiant heat source, and then in an incubator. Carry out activities to revitalize and restore breathing. Antiacidotic therapy gives good results. The main indication for correction with sodium bicarbonate is the general serious condition of the child (less than 6 points according to Apgar) and the development of decompensated acidosis (pH<7.3). The sodium bicarbonate solution is re-introduced in the next 2-3 days until the indicators of the acid-base state are normalized (pH 7.35-7.4). The introduction of vitamins, cardiac drugs, aminophylline, etc. is widely used.

Infusion therapy should be carried out slowly in a small volume at a rate of 3-5 drops per 1 minute. The composition of the injected liquid is determined by the goal: delivery of calories to the body, reduction of catabolism and the degree of acidosis, improvement of water-salt metabolism, prevention of hypo- or hyperkalemia and hyperaminoacidemia. With shock and blood loss, blood transfusions are indicated. A constant inhalation of a 30% oxygen-air mixture is required.

The use of oxygen-helium mixtures is effective. Care is of great importance: rest, keeping in a couveuse. The start time of feeding is determined individually, taking into account the functional state of the child and the degree of prematurity. In severe cases, especially in violation of the coordination of swallowing, sucking and breathing, tube feeding is prescribed. As children recover, they are transferred to feeding with expressed human milk, and then applied to the mother’s breast.

The prognosis for the development of edematous-hemorrhagic syndrome and hyaline membranes is severe, in other cases it is favorable.

is it worth buying a pet for a child? Yes, and children get great pleasure from the fact that there is a dog or a cat in the house. In fact, they will be happy even with a hamster or fish. m24.ru columnist Anna Lebedeva reflects on whether it is worth buying pets for children.

Photo: TASS/Barcroft Images/Ruaridh C

A pet shop in a mall. From the cage, a kitten looks at the mother and daughter passing by. The girl stops near her pet and plaintively stretches out the phrase: “Mom, buy it! He is sad and lonely here, no one plays with him.”

And that one seems to feel that a little bit more and he will find new owners. He starts kicking a paper bow with his tiny paws, and his blue eyes flirt with the girl. This fluffy would know what awaits him in a family where there is a small child. “I don’t advise you to buy a kitten,” said an elderly woman with a bag of cat food in her hands.

Mom smiled in response and silently took out her purse. Looking at how she examines the kitten, how unexpectedly for her daughter she buys it, how the girl laughs, kisses the smoky fur, and then cries with happiness, I remembered my cat, who was lucky enough to become a girlfriend of a mischievous girl.

Photo: YAY/TASS

For a whole week, the two-month-old stalker wrapped his skinny tail around our legs, stared at us with round yellow eyes, and mewed plaintively. “Get out!” a plump grandmother from the first floor shouted at the cat, taking out the garbage in a flannel robe.

It was freezing outside at that time, and at some point, unable to resist the next “Meow”, we took the cat for ourselves, giving her a completely new and carefree life. Gratitude knew no bounds – a furry ball of wool jumped on my knees and touched my earlobe with a cold wet nose, as if whispering “Thank you.”

She became our third family member and even received a passport with the name Mosya. After a couple of years, her quiet life came to an end. All our emotions were connected only with the newborn daughter, who, as soon as she started to crawl, first of all grabbed the cat by the tail.

Photo: YAY/TASS/Alena Ozerova

Surprisingly, this did not make the cat live under the bed and come out only at night to eat. She sat down next to her daughter and patiently performed the role of her favorite toy. As now, when the girl has already grown up, and role-playing games have begun.

“Mom, the cat is sick, it needs to be cured,” my daughter once said. I go into the room and see a completely healthy cat lying flat on the bed and a child who is trying to inject her with a toy syringe. By the tail, by the paw, by the collar – as soon as the daughter lacks an unfortunate cat, but she still suffers.

Photo: YAY/TASS/Alena Ozerova

I would have thought that Mosya is unique, or that her maternal instinct worked, if it were not for the huge boxer dog Semyon from the second floor, who also heroically endures the torments of a small child.

Students will be taught methods of early development, first aid and much more.

In the specialized employment center “My Career” on May 18, the fourth, final this year training course in a free school for nannies – “Grandma and Grandpa for an hour” will begin.

“Working with children is, first of all, a great responsibility. It is very important that people who decide to choose this specialty have all the necessary knowledge and skills. They should be reliable helpers for parents and understand how to act in emergency situations, for example, if a child falls ill or is injured,” said Natalia Sivko, head of the Mom Works project at the My Career Employment Center.

Registration is already open. For four weeks, participants will learn the basics of the nanny profession, the theory of generations, early development methods, and take a special course on working with special children. They are waiting for the author’s courses of lecturers of the Russian society “Knowledge” on cybersecurity and preparation for school, a series of additional webinars with psychologists and experienced tutors.

The block dedicated to children’s health will be expanded. At the workshops that will be held at the Ambulance Station named after A.S. Puchkov, future nannies will learn how to stop bleeding, help with fractures, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and much more.

“All of our students and graduates have developed a special relationship with the course on childhood illnesses. This module is conducted by our permanent partners, physicians who help little patients every day. Taking into account the interest of the audience, we decided to hold additional classes directly where human lives are saved,” said Natalie Linkova, founder and head of the “Grandmother for an hour” service, author of the educational program of the school.

Nanny school is a partnership project of the My Career employment center and the Grandmother for an hour service. It was created with the support of the Moscow Department of Labor and Social Protection of the Population. Over the entire period of the project’s existence, more than nine thousand people have received a new specialty.

Best place to get baby ear piercing: Where Should I Get My Baby’s Ears Pierced? (Best Places!)

Where Should I Get My Baby’s Ears Pierced? (Best Places!)

There is no right or wrong answer for getting baby’s ears pierced. Depending on whether the decision was cultural, cosmetic, or simply preference, you likely went back and forth on deciding whether or not to pierce baby’s ears in infancy. If you’ve finally made the choice to move forward with the perfect pair of studs, the next big decisions you need to make are the when and where while following health and safety guidelines.

The best place to get a baby’s ear pierced is at a pediatrician or a tattoo parlor because they maintain the highest standard of hygiene and they will use a sharp, hollow needle that is less painful and safer than the piercing gun used as places such as Walmart or Claire’s.

There are some medical and safety guidelines parents need to pay attention to before they head to their local mall and pop into any tween jewelry store. Shopping for a professional to perform the piercing is much more important than deciding on baby’s first pair of earrings.

Table of Contents

When can I get my baby’s ears pierced?

While ear piercing, when done professionally, is generally safe for young children and babies, the AAP recommends waiting until a child is old enough to take care of the piercing themselves. However, if you choose to get a child’s ears pierced in infancy, it’s recommended to wait until your child is at least three months old, but preferably as old as 6 months, to reduce the risk of infection or even a hospital stay.

It’s important to note that if a piercing becomes infected and the baby develops a fever a hospital stay may be necessary according to most health and safety protocols for children that young.

It’s wise to be sure baby is up to date on vaccines, like the tetanus shot, before making the appointment. According to the CDC, if parents are following the recommended vaccination schedule, a child will have their second tetanus vaccination at around 4 months of age.

What’s most important when piercing a baby’s ears is working with a trusted professional and following proper care and hygiene during the healing process.

Do babies need shots before getting ears pierced?

Some experts recommend waiting until baby has had two doses of the tetanus vaccine, which is done at 4 months according to the CDC recommended vaccine schedule. This provides additional protection for baby in case of infection.

How to care for infant ear piercings

Much like with piercings in older children and adults, it’s important to take excellent care of the area during the healing process to avoid pain and infections.

Follow these simple steps to keep your baby’s ear piercing cared for:

  1. Avoid touching the piercings except for when you’re cleaning them
  2. Use clean hands before touching the new piercings
  3. Two to three times per day, clean the entire area surrounding the piercings with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab. Use this as a reminder to check that the earrings are secure and gently rotate the earrings.
  4. Do not change the earrings for the first 4-6 weeks
  5. Keep an eye out of redness, puss or swelling that lasts longer than 24 hours after the initial piercing was done. If a fever of 100.4 or greater develops or the ears feel warm to the touch the piercings may be infected.

If baby has signs of infection, continue to follow stringent aftercare steps, and call your pediatrician for advice or care.

How do you pierce an infant’s ears?

While there are different methods for piercing ears and other body parts, the ideal way to pierce a baby’s ears is with a needle, not a piercing gun, which you’ll generally find at most mall kiosks or jewelry stores. An experienced piercer, doctor, or nurse will be able to advise you further on best practices.

The piercing process is similar for infants as it is for adults. A mark is made on the earlobe as a guide for where the holes should go followed by sterilization and then piercing with sterile equipment. Much like with immunizations, you’ll be asked to hold baby still while the professional places the piercing. Earrings are then placed in the ears.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the sterilization process and watch closely to make sure the technician performing the piercing follows best practices for sanitation. A professional piercer will follow these steps for providing a clean, safe experience:

  1. Wash their hands and put on fresh gloves
  2. Needles, tools, and jewelry should all be inside individually sealed, sterile packages
  3. The piercer will change gloves if they have to touch anything in the room aside from their sterile tools and equipment

The AAP recommends using gold post, stud earrings with safety backing to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and inflammation, and for added security and safety.

They also advise that the procedure be done under sanitary conditions by a trained professional.

Do they numb baby’s ears before piercing?

Anytime needles are involved it’s generally not the most pleasant experience-especially for little ones. If you’re worried about discomfort during the piercing process, try bringing along an ice pack to help numb the area before and offer relief afterward.

Some pediatricians or medical professionals can prescribe a numbing cream or may apply it to the earlobe upon piercing if being done in a doctor’s office. Give your pediatrician a call to find out if this is an option for you.

Do babies cry when they get their ears pierced?

Just like with any injection, an ear-piercing will be painful for baby, so expect some tears. Try icing the area before and after to offer relief or bringing along a favorite toy, pacifier, bottle, etc. to offer comfort afterward. A tip to help reduce crying and anxiety is to call ahead to ask if there are two piercers available so the ears can be done at the same time.

The best place to get a baby’s ears pierced safely

There are more places than just the mall to get your ears pierced. In fact, you’ll want to steer clear of any place that uses a piercing gun to get your child’s ears pierced because, according to the Association of Professional Piercers a piercing gun is not ideal due to the risk of infection and the difficulty of proper sanitation using this equipment. Most mall kiosks and stores offer ear piercing with a piercing gun, so you may want to shop around for more options.

You can ask your dermatologist, pediatrician, tattoo parlor, an area jeweler, or local kiddie salon for infant piercing services. Just be sure that you check with the Better Business Bureau and do your research before making an appointment. If your pediatrician doesn’t offer piercing services, ask for a recommendation or the best place to start your search.

If you’re looking outside your pediatrician’s or other medical professional’s offices, then follow these guidelines for choosing a safe and reputable location for your child’s ear piercing:

  • Is the location rated well with the Better Business Bureau?
  • Is the location properly licensed and credentialed?
  • Ask about AAP accreditation (Association of Professional Piercers)
  • Ask about the process and sterilization techniques
  • Check out portfolios and reviews
  • Trust your instincts-if you don’t feel completely at ease then you’re not obligated to stay for your appointment

If you’re not able to have a medical professional, like your pediatrician, a nurse or dermatologist, pierce your baby’s ears, then try finding an Association of Professional Piercers member near you here.

Tattoo Parlour

While this may not be the first place you think of to take a child, outside of a medical office this is likely the best place to take a baby for ear piercing. Why? Because reputable tattoo parlors have trained piercers that are educated on proper sterilization, technique, and must adhere to strict health and safety guidelines.

Will tattoo shops pierce baby’s ears?

You’ll likely have to do some calling around and research in your local area, but this is not an unheard-of practice and many piercing professionals actually advocate for parents to take their kids to tattoo shops to get their children’s ears pierced rather than at the mall. You can expect to pay anywhere from $20-$40 and up for this service at a tattoo parlor.

Can a baby go into a tattoo shop?

With a consenting adult, children under 18 are generally able to head to the tattoo parlor for an appointment. Be sure to do your research on what’s allowed in your state and what the restrictions and preferences are of your local tattoo parlors. Some states require that a minor have a photo ID and other credentials prior to getting a piercing for recordkeeping and liability purposes. Again, try calling around to some reputable parlors and shops in your area to get some information on which ones provide this service for young children.

Pediatrician

Pediatric ear piercing is a service offered by some pediatrician’s offices, often referred to as medical ear piercing. This may be the most comfortable choice for parents, but not all offices offer this service. Pediatricians who offer this service are trained in piercing techniques and are experts in wound care and management (after all, you’re asking for holes in the body). Some pediatrician’s offices charge $75-$100 for this service.

Do all pediatricians pierce ears?

Not all pediatricians offer this service and if there is one in your area that does, you may need to be a patient of theirs to receive this service, but that may not always be the case. Some research and phone calls will help you determine what’s available in your area.

Walmart

Some select Walmart locations offer ear piercing services. They use the Inverness System, which is a piercing gun, and pricing starts at $10. You’ll need to call your local Walmart to see what ages they pierce and to learn more about their process.

Is it safe to pierce baby ears at Walmart?

Walmart uses the Inverness System, which is a piercing gun, and, ideally, a hollow needle is best for most piercings due to sterilization standards, technique, and healing. However, a piercing gun can be used on baby’s ears.

Claire’s

Most malls in America have the iconic Claire’s store. Known for their jewelry and accessories for kiddos to teens they also are known as the place to get your ears pierced at the mall. Claire’s stores offer ear piercing free with the purchase of starter kits, which are listed at $18 and up.

How old does a baby have to be to get her ears pierced at Claire’s?

Claire’s requires babies to have had a current DTaP shot, which will be by eight weeks of age.

Is it safe to pierce baby ears at Claire’s?

Generally speaking, yes, it’s safe to get an ear piercing at Claire’s stores. These stores offer general piercing services using pre-sterilized, individually packaged equipment.

Piercing Pagoda

The Piercing Pagoda is another iconic place to get ears pierced at the local mall. Most of these locations offer children’s ear-piercing services for kids as young as two months and up. Piercing Pagoda will offer to pierce both ears at once to help alleviate anxiety when two piercers are available, so call ahead to make arrangements.

How old does a baby have to be to get her ears pierced at Piercing Pagoda?

According to their website, they offer piercing services for babies two months and up. They also require a current DTaP shot.

Is it safe to pierce baby ears at Piercing Pagoda?

Piercing Pagoda technicians receive annual training and re-training to keep up with best practices and services. They use single-use, sterilized, and pre-packaged equipment for piercing. They offer short post style earrings ideal for kids 3 and under and allow for complementary follow-up visits if you have any concerns. For more information on their process, check their site here.

Remember to do careful research on reputable venues in your area that offer children’s piercing services-this is a relatively common procedure, so you should have plenty of options in your area. Just as important as when and where you choose to get your child’s ear pierced is how you care for it afterward. Be sure to closely follow aftercare instructions and keep a close eye on your child’s ear piercing in the weeks following the procedure to ensure proper healing so they can enjoy their earrings for a lifetime.

Indiana Law states that parents must produce written permission for children under 18 to get a piercing and many reputable tattoo/piercing parlors will require a birth certificate and parent ID, as well. The following adult tattoo and piercing parlors have been recommended as child friendly, but be sure to call in advance, as policies are constantly changing.

Tips:

  • Make sure to do your own research before going to any piercing location. As a parent you have to feel comfortable with each location’s policies and methods in advance of the procedure.
  • Pay attention to sanitary conditions. Does the space look clean? Does the piercing technician wash their hands, wear gloves, and remove tools from sanitary packaging?
  • Ask about the type of earrings they will be using. Surgical steel posts are best and less likely to cause an infection.
  • Be sure to ask about proper cleaning and healing. Ear piercings tend to heal within 4-6 weeks and need to be cleaned and turned regularly. Do not take posts out for extended periods of time during this healing process for risk of the holes closing prematurely.

“System 75” for ear piercing – a worthy alternative to the usual “pistol” – health articles

Ear piercing is a responsible decision that is rarely trusted to children, although according to statistics, the vast majority of piercings (we are talking about the classic symmetrical ear piercing, and not piercing) are made precisely in childhood. As a rule, the decision that it is time for the child to acquire earrings is made by the parents. They also bear full responsibility for the consequences of the procedure and take on the difficulties of caring for pierced ears in the first months, since you cannot rely on the responsibility of the baby.

From a medical point of view, early ear piercing in children can be justified for several reasons:

  • High regeneration rate – the earlier the injection is made, the shorter the recovery period
  • Lack of memory of pain – the baby will not understand what is happening, and with the help of modern techniques will not notice the pain, therefore it will be easier to endure the manipulation than a grown-up child who is already able to have doubts and even with a strong desire to receive earrings will be afraid of an unknown danger, nervous
  • Ease of care – in infancy, parents perform a number of care procedures familiar to a child, among which it is easy to include care for pierced ears: on the one hand, the child is not yet able to resist, on the other, he completely trusts the parent. In addition, it is easier for an adult to control the healing process and treat wounds in a timely manner than for a child, even if he is of a conscious age

StudexSystem 75 – what is it

Since specialists have to work mainly with children, ear piercing systems are constantly being improved. Medical needles are long gone as the least safe and most traumatic method. Now the leadership is shared by the usual and already well-known “gun” and the innovative American “System 75” for ear piercing. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Consider a classic pistol:

  • The puncture is very fast and almost painless
  • The hole is punched by a stud earring with a pointed end – in this way the jewelry is immediately inserted into the ear
  • All jewelry materials are hypoallergenic and non-oxidizing – either surgical steel or gold-plated steel
  • The thickness of the shank of the earring and, accordingly, the diameter of the piercing are such that, after the healing period, the studs can be changed to any other earrings

Of the minuses, it is worth noting:

  • Loud bang when the spring is actuated can frighten a child, especially an infant
  • Relative injury – the tissue is torn when punctured, which can give the child a few unpleasant moments
  • Healing can also be quite sensitive – the lobes turn red and remain painful for several days, especially when touched, which cannot be avoided during the treatment of wounds
  • Earrings have to be desterilized by taking them out of their packaging and loading them into a pistol, which increases the risk of infection

“System 75” for piercing the ears – the same pistol, but improved to take into account all the disadvantages of the previous generation of tools. This is by far the best ear piercing method for young children.

The best option for piercing children’s ears

Ear piercing with System 75 is a method developed at Stadex by leading experts in the United States in the field of ear piercing. This type of pistol is hand pressured, made of lightweight materials and has a new design so that it bears little resemblance to the imposing instruments of the past.

The manipulation features of this small machine gun eliminate inaccuracy, as the device allows you to aim reliably. The earring, which is also a needle, is quickly and accurately inserted into the tissues of the earlobe, without punching it with a blow (this is how an ordinary gun works), but as if pushing the tissues apart. As a result, pain during the procedure is reduced, and the recovery period is shortened and passes imperceptibly for the baby.

It is not by chance that needle earrings got such a name – in the new system they are distinguished by their thinness, which is an advantage when piercing the ears with System 75 for children of primary preschool and infant age, since ear tissues at these stages of development are still very delicate and vulnerable.

But the most important achievement of innovation is the complete sterility of the procedure. Unlike a pistol, which is a reusable tool, after a child’s ears are pierced, the 75 system is almost completely replaced: needle earrings are supplied in sealed factory packaging along with a cartridge, the elements of which touch the baby’s earlobes. After the puncture, the earrings remain in the earlobe, and the cartridge is completely removed. Thus, not only the transmission of bacteria from baby to baby is excluded, but also the contact of the hands of a specialist with any of the sterile parts.

Advantages and disadvantages of System 75

Ear piercing with 75 System compared to conventional pistol:

  • The same speed, but there is no characteristic loud bang, which often frightens children, which is important, since the procedure will have to be repeated on the second earlobe, and the child after the first ear must agree to pierce the second
  • It is preferable to pierce the ears with the “System 75” for a child under one year old, since the baby’s body is very susceptible to infections, and only this instrument can ensure complete sterility of the procedure
  • With this gentle method of earlobe piercing, the recovery period is shortened. And although the earrings will also have to be worn for two months without removing, the wounds will heal much faster – the risk of infection during care will also be significantly reduced
  • If the child becomes naughty after the first ear, the piercing of the second ear can be postponed – this will not affect the sterility of the procedure, since each of the needle earrings is packed separately: the second earring will simply remain unpacked. This system is especially convenient for asymmetric piercings (a second earring in the lobe or a piercing of one ear for a boy)
  • Original earrings are distinguished by increased comfort: they are very small, with a thin stem, sharpened in a special way, when fastened, the sharp tip is completely covered by smooth, rounded clasp elements. All of them are made of medical steel or titanium and do not cause side effects

However, before deciding to pierce the ears of a child with System 75, you should familiarize yourself with the limitations of the method:

  • Original earrings have a unique clasp size, so if you lose it, you will have to order exactly the same from the manufacturer
  • The diameter of the System75 ear piercing needle is very small. On the one hand, this ensures painlessness, on the other hand, such narrow channels require careful selection of new jewelry. However, the authors of the method offer a wide range of earrings to wear (after wound healing). Different diameters will help to painlessly switch to larger legs
  • The price for ear piercing with a pistol in Moscow is lower than with System 75
  • Service remains innovative and not available everywhere

Healing after a puncture

User reviews in Moscow about ear piercing using System 75 note the extremely rapid healing of canals in children. This is facilitated by the own capabilities of the child’s body, the sterility of the procedure and the special jewelry material with high biocompatibility.

However, without proper care during the recovery period, none of these factors will be enough to maintain the health of the child. In the clinic, along with the new jewelry, parents should receive a memo describing the rules for caring for their ears after the procedure:

  • The baby will be advised not to wet his head for the first three days and not to touch new jewelry with his hands. Be extremely careful when changing clothes
  • Punctures should be treated several times a day with antiseptic solutions according to the scheme: in the first 2 weeks 4 times, then 2-3 times and, finally, in the 6th week – 1 time per day. As an antiseptic, it is convenient to use the original gel, which well envelops the walls of the canal, preventing the introduction of bacteria, and contributes to the speedy recovery
  • For 6-8 weeks, the earrings will remain permanently in the lobe, but they must be rotated around their axis for a minute several times a day to prevent ingrowth and congestion in the canal. This must be done very carefully, with smooth movements
  • After the first removal of the earring, the puncture sites, as well as the earring itself, must be treated with an alcohol solution before re-threading. When changing jewelry, store earrings in a clean sealed case

Advantages of the procedure in MEDSI:

  • MEDSI is one of the few clinics where ears are pierced with System 75 in Moscow
  • The equipment is approved by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, has certificates of originality
  • Wide range of original accessories and accessories

Ear piercing | When can a child’s ears be pierced?

The first ear piercing is an important event for children and parents. However, no matter how skilled the procedure, there is always a risk that the child will become allergic to wearing earrings during the initial healing period. Let’s talk about how to avoid this.

When can my child’s ears be pierced?

There are no rules on the age at which a child’s ears can be pierced. However, dermatologists at MC Medicover do not recommend ear piercing for infants. It should be noted that careful handling of earrings can be difficult with very young children. They are interested in the body and often affect the ears, which can complicate the healing process. You should also remember that when the child goes to kindergarten, you may be asked to remove the earrings. This is for the safety of the kids. This type of decoration can be torn off during the game. Doctors also note that everyone should be able to decide on their body, so the procedure should be carried out only when the child is confident in his decision.

Allergic reactions:

About 10% of the population are allergic to gold (more specifically, to the impurities it contains, including nickel). Therefore, leading dermatologists at MC Medicover do not recommend using gold products for ear piercing and wearing gold earrings during the initial healing period.

It is better to use gold-plated earrings in the visible part, and in the part in direct contact with the skin, made of pure medical alloy.

Earrings in silver are similarly made. Completely medically safe earrings, completely made of a special medical alloy of metals, the main of which is steel 300 series titanium.

Ear piercings at Medicover Medical Center use earrings with slightly thicker studs than normal earrings.

Where to get your ears pierced?

Dermatologists at MC Medicover advise visiting beauticians who use professional pistols. Using a gun involves piercing the earlobe. Before the procedure, it is very important to sterilize all parts of the gun, as bacteria may be present on it. The gun method is by far the fastest and least stressful, which is why moms of babies choose it.

Another option is to pierce the ear with a sterilized needle. This method is used in piercings that heal faster and minimize the risk of pus buildup or irritation.

Proper care must not be forgotten. Freshly sampled holes should be wiped twice a day with colloidal silver or octenisept. If alarming symptoms appear, such as accumulation of pus or significant redness, you should contact the specialist who performed the procedure.

Why? When is the earring removed six weeks after the piercing?

Because the hole shrinks immediately. A thicker hairpin provides an additional result. After that, you can easily put on any earring (which does not cause an allergic reaction in you), without exposing the delicate walls of the hole to irritation and infections.

Circulation at the ear piercing site ensures better healing. The piercing earrings are placed in a sterile cassette, and only these disposable elements come into contact with your body, thanks to which you are 100% protected from possible infections.

In the future, the choice of metal earrings, consult a dermatologist. Thanks to this, you will avoid the risk of allergies or sensitization.

First earrings after piercing

The first earrings after piercing must be sterilized and made of quality material – silver or gold. Both of the metals are characterized by bactericidal properties, due to which they do not cause an allergic reaction.

Hypoallergenic jewelry

The wound after ear piercing heals for more than a year. The risk of nickel allergy is currently the greatest. That’s why you should choose skin-friendly metals. By wearing hypoallergenic earrings, you reduce the risk of nickel allergy. These earrings are recommended for people who are already allergic to nickel and cannot wear other earrings.

Post-piercing:

Thoroughly rinse the pierced area (both sides) twice a day. When bathing, wash your ears with running water and liquid soap. Then rinse with plenty of running water and dry with paper towels. In addition, it is recommended to wash the ears with special disinfectant wipes (during the first six weeks). Disinfectant wipes can be purchased at salons that perform medical procedures for piercing the ears using the Blomdahl method. Never touch earrings with dirty hands. Do not twist the earrings.

Pierced ears take at least 6 weeks to heal. During this period, we should take special care of them. After treatment, we must receive detailed instructions from the beautician or piercer on how to care for and what should be avoided during healing. Regular hygiene and care will be especially important, thanks to which the puncture site will heal faster, and you can prevent infection and unsightly scars.

Always wash your hands before touching earrings and ears

Children should not touch earrings for no reason, especially with unwashed hands. However, it is recommended to return them 180 degrees clockwise daily. This prevents the earring from growing in. It is best to do this gently and in a playful environment so as not to frighten the child or hurt him.

Maintain hygiene and wash the puncture site

Hygiene is the most important thing in healing. Experienced dermatologists at MC Medicover recommend regular and thorough washing of earrings with notches on the clasps and the skin around the piercing. You need to do this twice a day and use special products based on saline. Forget about the old methods of using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, which can irritate and dry sensitive skin, lengthen healing time, and cause a burning sensation that discourages the patient from tending to the wound.

Do not wet the puncture site

The puncture site must be dry so that it heals quickly and infection does not develop. For at least 6 months, it is better to abandon public pools. You should also pay attention to wiping the ears after bathing.
