The Basics

The Mommy or Daddy baby shower game is simple in concept. Your party guests (women or men) will receive a series of questions about which parent is more likely to do certain things after the baby is born – from ideas like who will change the most diapers to which parent will be the helicopter parent. The guests get to cast their vote on who they think is most likely to do the activity in the question.

Think of the game like a fun survey that you can look back on later to see how everyone’s predictions came through. Since there aren’t any right or wrong answers, there isn’t a winner – but you and your guests can get a laugh out of the results.

There also isn’t a lot of prep work, so you can quickly put it together if your baby shower is fast approaching. And It can also be ended at any point by just not asking any more questions.

This game is also excellent because it’s versatile. You can play it in person or over video chat, too, making it an excellent fit for a virtual baby shower!

Play as a Virtual Baby Shower Game

Playing the Mom vs. Dad baby shower game virtually is simple, making it an excellent contender for a video chat hosted baby showers. You can either print the quiz sheets out in advance to mail to guests or email a file that they can print out on their own.

Even with COVID-19 happening, you can still play this great game with a little bit of planning. WebBabyShower can help you get ready to have a fantastic virtual baby shower experience!

How to Play

Playing this game is simple and can be done at any time during a baby shower.

Just follow these steps!

Step 1

Setting up the game starts by prepping a quiz sheet to give to guests. This sheet has the list of questions about the parents to be. There will also be an indicator of both mommy and daddy next to each item. This can be either the names, icons (lips and mustache, for example), or whatever represents the parents. If you make your own question sheets, this can be as creative as you like!

Step 2

You can start playing by passing out the quiz sheet to guests, whether that’s mailing a sheet to them in advance or linking everyone to a virtual copy of the sheet. Everyone will have time to answer whether they think mommy or daddy will be more likely to do the tasks on the sheet.

Step 3

Once everyone’s filled out their sheets, it’s time to check the answers. The mom and dad can come forward with props that match their icons on the sheet or fill out an answer sheet in advance.

Step 4

Someone can serve as the host, reading each question out loud. The parents to be will then raise their props to give their answers to the players. Feel free to have fun with this part! Let the guests talk about their answers and why they think Mommy or Daddy is more likely to take over the task.

Step 5

Each guest is responsible for checking over their sheet, or players can trade with each other to check answers. While there isn’t necessarily a winner to the game, feel free to collect the surveys afterward to remember the game.

Games for dad with a child. What games can father play with the child

Does your father help you play with the child? Our dad yes, but for many moms, this is a problem. Especially if the child is still very young. We have compiled a selection of games that will help dads spend time with their children with interest.

Many mothers want to involve dads in games and activities with their babies. Dads often refuse because they don’t know how and what to play with the baby. After all, it’s scary to touch it, so as not to break something by accident. And here mom should come to the rescue, offer options for the first games, and then step aside, observe and enjoy the result. Without interfering! Dad, having received a charge of positive emotions and realizing that it is not difficult and not scary, will strive to spend more time with the child. And later he will learn to come up with various options for games.

The first games for babies up to a year are the same for both dad and mom.

We have already described many of them in the article Games with children from birth to six months.

The most popular of them are:

playing peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek;

high-low – this is where daddy’s strength comes in handy;

first “conversation”.
Since many dads are still children themselves, they are drawn into “conversations” with babies. The child makes sounds – the father repeats, the child reacts and gives out a new sentence, and the father repeats again. It’s fun to watch conversations like this!

Horse game.
Sooner or later, every dad becomes a horse for a child 🙂 Pilot or airplane – dad lifts the child high above his head and carries around the apartment, and the child depicts an airplane.

viewing and “reading” books.
Of course, dad is not interested in talking about the kolobok, the ryaba hen, or as the dog and the cat say. Make a selection of books that will be of interest to dads – cars, transport, equipment, tools.

Active games with dad are suitable for children from one year and older.

construction – it will obviously be more interesting for dad than mom.

You can assemble a pyramid, build towers from cubes, build castles, labyrinths or a dollhouse from a designer. The main thing is not to forget to tell dad that until a certain age it is more interesting for a child to destroy than to build. Then dad will not be upset that his beautiful castle is destroyed while not yet completed!

cars – most grown men love them. Invite dad to play cars with a child – you can learn to count, study colors on cars, talk about the structure of a car, and even arrange races. Radio-controlled cars and helicopters are generally a separate issue. What dad doesn’t dream of a radio-controlled helicopter?

A child can play outdoor and active games with dad.

offer a tug of war

organize a kid’s soccer game in the hallway or outside

offer any of the ball games from our selection of Ball games for kids

take some empty plastic bottles and a ball and have a bowling competition.

all sorts of neck-butting, butting, chasing and hide-and-seek also bring a lot of pleasure to both the child and the father.

dad can teach a child to ride a bike, rollerblade or scooter;

play badminton and tennis;

In the evening, offer to play board games, checkers or chess according to the child’s age.

Children from 1.5-2 years old will be happy to play with their dad in the labyrinth or treasure hunt.

“who is faster” is another universal game.
Who will get dressed faster, who will quickly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, who will fasten their jacket faster.

From personal experience – do not play this game with the theme of Who will eat faster.

Firstly, there is no need to rush to eat, the child may choke.

Secondly, the child may become malnourished, saying that he has already eaten in order to “finish” eating before dad.

As you can see, for most games with a child, dad does not need special knowledge and skills. You can play anytime and anywhere – the main thing is the desire to spend more time with your child. And this desire is instilled in dad by mom!

We have already written about the role of the father in the life of the child and the need to participate in it in the article: 6 childcare responsibilities that can and should be entrusted to the father! We highly recommend reading!

Games with dad are the brightest and most memorable for a child, and the most important thing in this process is that both the child and dad should have fun!

8 games of three minutes for a busy dad. Games for 3-8 year olds

It’s a long weekend ahead and you’re sure to get a chance to finally play with your 3, 5 or 8 year old. What? Have you forgotten how it’s done? No ideas in your head? Then take advice from the book “The Best Dad” by Toshimasa Oota. Choose to play words or turn into a horse, arrange a sword fight or knit sea knots.

One of daddy’s roles is playmate. Compared to monotonous and not very fun activities like cooking or changing diapers, the role of a playmate is much more exciting.

The child cannot prepare food and even eat on his own, he needs help. But without a partner for games, at first glance, he may well do. But from the point of view of upbringing and education, participation in the game is much more important than taking care of the daily needs of the child.

Children themselves invent games in which their momentary needs are manifested. The child intuitively feels what qualities he lacks. By joining the game that the child himself started, you can contribute to his development as much as possible.

The best assistant in spontaneous games is nature. If you go with a child to the sea or to the forest, he himself will come up with one entertainment after another, gradually developing. And then any insect that you can chase all day long will become an excellent partner for games.

In those families where order is above all else, where this and that is impossible, it is difficult for children to show unexpected abilities and creativity. It is not surprising that in such an environment, the child is involuntarily drawn into the virtual space of game consoles. After all, in such a game you can jump and run, destroy and make a mess.

Games with dad: 9 ideas for child development

And here is dad’s way out. By having the father react or join in the child’s play, spontaneity and creativity can be developed.

Just as children’s blocks can transform into a medieval castle or a car, so can dad himself change. Sometimes he becomes a partner in a word game, sometimes he can jokingly fight with you, sometimes he plays a horse. In other words, dad himself becomes a toy. It is also worth thinking carefully about how many objects around you can turn into toys.

You have a newspaper at hand – great, we will come up with a variety of games with it. You can crumple up the newspaper and throw the resulting ball. If the child is now studying the alphabet, then you can arrange a competition, who will find more in the text, for example, the syllables “KA”.

Do you have a rope? You can use it as a skipping rope, you can play train by holding onto the rope one after another. You can tie sea knots and play pirates by unraveling them.

Do kids like gadgets? Great! With the help of modern technology, iPad and Kindle, you can come up with different entertainment. But just avoid using special applications for children, this will be a violation of the rule. Choose only basic applications.

For example, use the Flashlight app to light up a wall and play shadow play. You can use the whiteboard app and draw. Dad will depict a labyrinth on the screen, and the child will have to go through it.

You can ask your child to silently count to ten, and use the Stopwatch app to check the accuracy of the count. Using the voice-recognizing Siri app on iPhone, you can ask your child to say the learned English words and check if they are recognizable.

I appeal to those dads who are not very active in everyday life. If you make it a habit to move vigorously with your child for at least three minutes a day, you will soon feel the result.

And what about the child! If for three minutes a day you are busy playing a lively game, it is impossible to even estimate how much this will affect his development.

Mom is a child care professional and you must become a play professional. When your wife says with admiration: “I definitely would not have thought of that,” you will be recognized as a true parenting professional.

8 3 minute games

Next, I will introduce you to some simple games that are easy to play at home.

Sword fight from newspapers. What could be easier! Roll up the newspaper and arrange a fight with paper swords. The simplest game that we all once played, but which is often forgotten. Maybe mom won’t be happy. But this game will help develop observation, reaction speed, as well as the skill of active play with any objects.

Labyrinth with closed eyes. Blindfold with a towel and play. Let the living room be the start, and the task is to get to the bathroom. In this way, we can develop the skill of orientation in space when we are looking for something in the dark. In a house familiar as five fingers, you will stumble on the sofa and stumble against the door. But in order to protect the child from danger, dad must protect him from collisions.

Get on dad’s shoulders. Climbing trees is good, but climbing on dad is just as good. The father must take a stance on bent legs. The child climbs onto the father and must reach the shoulders in order to sit on them. This game trains muscles and a sense of balance.

Guess by gestures. Dad and child should draw something in turn and guess what it was. When the child’s turn comes, gesticulation develops. When dad demonstrates something, it helps to increase the vocabulary of the child.

Drawing quiz. Dad draws any picture, such as an animal or a cartoon character. Then you show this picture to the child, offering to guess what is drawn. If dad draws well, then it will not be so interesting to play. But if dad draws badly, then the child will surely like that dad can’t do everything either. You can even play along a little.

Picture book. Invite the child to draw what he likes, and use this picture to make up a story. For example, what really happened on the street while walking in the park or a fantasy story about the country of sweets.

What is a Receiving Blanket?

The clue’s in the name – this is quite simply the first cloth you wrap a newborn in before handing them to the parents.

Considering how soft and sensitive a baby’s skin is, these blankets are silky smooth, lightweight, and hypoallergenic – typically made with 100% cotton, delicate muslin, or fuzzy flannel.

A receiving blanket is of enormous sentimental value and is generally retained as a keepsake by the baby’s family.

Here are the fantastic benefits of this blanket and why it should be the first item to pack in your hospital bag.

  1. Super Soft: A receiving blanket isn’t just soft. It is one of the most delicate fabrics to touch, making it perfect for the arrival of your bundle of love. It’s also pretty breathable to reduce the risk of overheating. Your baby would always be snug, calm, and dry in one of these!

  2. Small and Lightweight: These snuggly blankets are featherlight and allow good airflow. They come in various sizes, with the most common dimension of 30 inches x 30 inches – an ideal size to swaddle and wrap your baby comfortably.

  3. Non-Toxic: Any cloth used for a newborn should be skin friendly or, in other words, non-bleached or non-dyed. To be super safe that the blanket you pick is hundred percent chemical-free, choose organic.

  4. Eco-Friendly: Blankets made from organic fabrics like cotton, muslin, and bamboo aren’t just gentle on your baby but also on the planet. Organic materials are grown with low-impact techniques and without chemicals, GMOs, or pesticides.

Is a Baby Receiving Blanket Same as a Swaddle Blanket?

A swaddling blanket is wrapped around the baby to mimic a womb-like environment. It helps them nap better and longer by maintaining their sleeping position while keeping startling reflexes at bay.

The only thing that sets the two types of blankets apart is the size – receiving blankets tend to be more compact as they’re designed for babies at their smallest. A receiving blanket can just as well be used to swaddle till you need a bigger size.

7 Most Popular Receiving Blanket Fabrics

Out of the endless list of items to buy for your baby’s arrival, a receiving blanket might be the most important. Here are the seven most widely used fabric choices and why they are ideal for baby blankets.

  1. 1. Muslin

A delicate gauze muslin blanket is a godsend for a baby born in the warmer months. It is skin-friendly, breathable, and not to mention extraordinarily soft and cozy. In fact, the more you wash these blankets, the softer they get. A muslin blanket is typically large (47 inches x 47 inches) for easy swaddling of wiggly babies.

  2. 2. Organic Cotton

Muslin, flannel, jersey – there are a whole host of baby-friendly fabrics woven, knit, or felted using cotton fibers. You can also rely on good ol’ cotton in its natural form to bring your baby home. Even better if it’s organic. The earth-friendly organic cotton is produced using low-impact methods without pesticides, toxic chemicals, or genetically modified seeds.

  3. 3. Cotton Flannel

Winters and flannel is a match made in heaven! The soft, cozy, and durable flannel is woven cotton fabric with a napped finish on one or both sides. It’s thicker than muslin and fuzzy to the touch. While there are synthetic varieties of flannel available, we recommend only the highest-quality cotton flannel for your baby. Like muslin, flannel gets softer with every wash.

  4. 4. Jersey Knit

For cooler months, it’s best to go for a blanket made from cotton flannel or jersey knit, as these work brilliantly well in regulating body temperature. A jersey knit is quite like regular cotton in breathability but more robust, thick, and stretchy. Plus, you won’t face any piling or fraying hassles with this fabric. When buying a jersey knit blanket, make sure the edges are hemmed to prevent the ends from curling up.

  5. 5. Bamboo

When we say bamboo for a baby blanket, we mean organic bamboo. This fabric is soft, breathable, non-abrasive, and blessed with natural anti-microbial properties. On your quest for the perfect baby blanket, you might also come across blankets made of bamboo rayon. These come with all the goodness of bamboo while being extra stretchy, which is great for swaddling. However, we don’t recommend bamboo rayon for babies because of the chemically intensive manufacturing process.

  6. 6. Fleece

Soft, easy to maintain, quick drying, and super snug are some of the many qualities that make fleece a fantastic winter blanket fabric. But if you’re looking for a natural and sustainable material for your baby, synthetic fleece may not be such a good idea.

  7. 7. Wool

When it comes to regulating body temperature, wool trumps all. It also wicks moisture, keeping you comfy and dry as you sleep. For baby receiving blankets, softer and finer varieties of wool like merino would be your best bet, as ordinary wool might be too abrasive and harsh for a baby’s skin.

7 Amazing Uses of Baby Receiving Blankets

Your baby’s first few seconds out in the world are crucial – a soft and comforting receiving blanket will make their transition smoother. But there’s much more these blankets can do besides giving your baby the best snuggles. Here are seven different ways of using a receiving blanket.

  1. 1. Swaddle Blanket

The primary use of a baby receiving blanket, apart from wrapping a newborn baby, is using it as a swaddle cloth to induce long and disruption-free naps. Many experts believe swaddling may have been invented anywhere from 4000 to 4500 years ago! This ancient technique works magically in recreating the confines of a womb – a baby’s first home. It’s like one giant hug that keeps your baby safe from startling reflexes in their newborn days.

  2. 2. Makeshift Diaper Changing Mat

A flat piece of easy-to-wash and quick-drying cloth is all you need for a changing mat. And a baby blanket made from organic cotton fits the bill, holding up well, wash after wash. Just fold and store it in your diaper baby for sanitary, mess-free on-the-go diapering.

  3. 3. Tummy Time Mat

In the early months, a baby needs a few minutes of tummy time every day to strengthen their head, neck, and upper body and learn how to lift their head. Why buy a separate tummy time mat when you’ve got a receiving blanket around? These blankets usually come in packs of 2 or 3 to help with various baby activities apart from just swaddling.

  4. 4. Stroller Cover

You can never be too prepared while stepping out with your little one – This is why having one of these around with you all the time is a smart call. A receiving blanket can also act as a stroller cover to keep your newborn safe from insects, dust, and bright sunlight while on their daily strolls with you.

  5. 5. Photograph Backdrop

Most receiving blankets are usually unbleached and dyed, making them ideal for creating light and natural photography backdrops. You can buy an expensive fabric backdrop off the rack or use your baby’s blanket instead. We prefer the latter!

  6. 6. Multi-purpose Mess Cleaners

You can always cut it into smaller pieces if a receiving blanket feels too big to use as a burp cloth. Double gauze muslin blankets are great for cleaning spills, dribbles, and spit-ups, because of their high absorbency, easy care, and quick-drying qualities. And once your infant begins nibbling at solid foods, keep a bunch of these around, as babies can be messy eaters!

  7. 7. Nursing Cover-up

A 30-inch x 30-inch or a 30-inch x 40-inch receiving blanket is a decent size to be used as a breastfeeding cover-up. Also, storing these blankets in your handbag or diaper bag is absolutely hassle-free, thanks to their compact dimensions.

How to Use a Receiving Blanket – Safety Tips

As helpful as blankets are, they also pose a safety risk if not used carefully. Here are a few things to remember when using any type of baby blanket.

  • Do not place the blanket or any loose bedding in the crib while your baby sleeps.
  • Make sure your baby is supervised at all times, and the blankets in no way restrict their breathing.
  • Swaddling should be done firmly but not tightly to reduce the risk of overheating.
  • If you’re swaddling, do it right from birth, and not when the baby is two to three months old when the risk of SIDS is the highest.

For a detailed safety guide, please go through the pointers put together by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to prevent sleep-related mishaps.

Final Thoughts

The usefulness of a receiving blanket isn’t just restricted to welcoming or swaddling a baby in their newborn days. It’s a multi-functional cloth that’ll help you long after your baby’s birth. And after it’s served you well, you can craft it into a pillow cover or a memory quilt as a precious keepsake.

I swear that babies need to come with a thesaurus so that you can figure out all of new terms that come along with them!

Babies have slightly different bedding to older kids and adults, because there is a risk they can overheat under duvets.

So if you are wondering what on earth a receiving blanket is, whether you need a receiving blanket and if you also need to invest in a swaddle too, you’re in the right place!

Receiving blanket vs swaddle? We’ve got the answers right here!

Before we get to it, if you are confused by any other baby clothing terminology such as the difference between a onesie and bodysuit, then you need to check out my post on different types of baby clothes.

What is a receiving blanket?

A receiving blanket is a light, thin blanket that you swaddle, wrap or cover your newborn baby with.

They got the name because receiving blankets were what was traditionally used in the delivery room, with babies wrapped up in one before being “received” by their parents after birth.

So this was traditionally the first blanket a baby was wrapped in. Now it’s a term that covers a blanket used in the early months with a newborn baby and they can be used for a huge range of things.

Receiving blankets are typically around 30ins by 30ins or rectangular.

The receiving blanket does not have to have a specific “look” and it isn’t made from a particular type of material. It could be made from light cotton or soft flannel. However the classic receiving blanket you would probably recognise is the blue and red striped white blanket typically used in (mainly US) hospitals (scroll down to see a video on swaddling on you’ll see one there).

The receiving blanket is traditionally very versatile and can be used for swaddling as well as a light blanket to cover baby when out and about.

They’re made from a light fabric so that baby does not overheat if they are used for swaddling.

Duvets are not recommended for babies, as stated by the NHS, so light blankets that can layered to add warmth are the best thing to use. Such as a receiving blanket!

You can use receiving blankets for the following things:

  • Swaddling (where baby is wrapped in a light, breathable blanket below the neck)
  • An extra blanket over baby to keep them warm at night (remember to tuck it under their arms so it does not cover their face)
  • Burping
  • Tummy time mat
  • Play mat
  • Breastfeeding cover
  • Changing mat cover (to soak up any accidents when changing the nappy)
  • Makeshift bib
  • Car seat cover

What is a swaddle?

A swaddle is a blanket used to wrap up, or swaddle, a newborn baby.

Swaddling is where a baby is wrapped below the neck in a way to make them feel snug and secure.

It can help them to sleep as being wrapped up snuggly reminds baby of being in the womb.

Swaddle blankets come in many different forms. The traditional swaddle blanket would be a thin cotton square or rectangular blanket, such as a receiving blanket, that you wrapped around baby.

However you can now purchase pre-made swaddles that do up with poppers or zips or have winged sides to make them easy to fold snugly around your baby.

This means there is no more fumbling around in the dark trying to secure a blanket as a swaddle!

How to swaddle your baby

If you do have a square or rectangular blanket (such as a receiving blanket) then here’s a step-by-step guide to how you can use it to swaddle your baby.

  • Fold swaddle into a triangle and place baby into the centre with their shoulders just below the fold.
  • Place your baby’s right arm across their body then pull the right hand part of the swaddle across baby’s chest (with their arm under the fabric) and tuck the edge of the swaddle under their body and beneath their left arm.
  • Fold the bottom of the swaddle up and over baby’s feet. Tuck the fabric into the top of the swaddle.
  • Place baby’s left arm alongside their body and take the left hand side of the swaddle and pull it across baby’s chest over their arm. Tuck the edge of the fabric under their body.

The swaddle should be snug, but not too tight and the fabric should be loose around the hips so their legs can move freely.

You should stop swaddling once your baby shows signs they are learning to roll over, which can be at around two to three months.

If all of this looks daunting then buy a pre-made swaddle that you pop baby in just like a sleeping bag!

Receiving blanket vs swaddle: What’s the difference between a receiving blanket and swaddle?

A receiving blanket is a thin baby blanket that can be used to swaddle or cover a newborn baby, and a swaddle is a blanket or pre-wrapped cover used to swaddle a baby.

So a receiving blanket can be used as a swaddle blanket. And a blanket used to swaddle may be a receiving blanket.

The two terms are then fairly interchangeable.

Both are made from light and breathable fabrics, both are used to swaddle a baby and both are for the newborn days.

The key difference when it comes to receiving blankets vs swaddles seems to be size, with many swaddle blankets slightly bigger than traditional receiving blankets.

Receiving blankets may also tend to be thicker, whereas swaddle blankets are often made from lighter material such as giant muslin swaddles.

What is a baby shawl?

If a receiving blanket is something you first wrap your baby in and a swaddle is used to wrap your baby up tight, what is a baby shawl?

This is another type of blanket used for newborns!

A baby shawl is a square or rectangular type of blanket made from wool, cashmere, merino or cotton.

They tend to be white or cream and feature pretty detail and scalloping around the edges.

Prince George was presented to the world by his parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrapped in a baby shawl back in 2013 outside St Mary’s Hospital in London shortly after his birth.

Pretty shawls are often used in newborn baby photography as they are pretty and practical, with more of a traditional look to them than other modern baby blankets.

Are receiving blankets necessary?

No you don’t have to buy any receiving blankets for your baby, but you may well find yourself with something very similar to what a receiving blanket is!

Many newborn baby blankets on the market are basically receiving blankets, but they’re just not specifically called that.

They may simply be called baby blanket, swaddling blankets, cellular blankets, muslin blanket or newborn blanket.

Look for things like giant swaddling muslins (which are light and perfect for use as swaddles, blankets or burp cloths), light cotton blankets or cotton cellular blankets.

These are all perfect as first blankets for a newborn baby that are light enough to be used as layers if your baby is born in winter or as nights get chillier.

How many receiving blankets do you need for a baby?

Four to six receiving blankets is a good number to start with for your newborn baby. It often depends on how often you prefer to do laundry as to whether you need a higher number of items or not!

This means if there are any accidents or spillages during nappy changes or when feeding you will always have some spare, plus you can layer blankets up in the winter to keep baby warm.

But as I’ve said above, many baby blankets do the same job as receiving blankets but they just aren’t specifically called that.

Don’t get too hung up on finding a product that specifically fits the bill of a receiving blanket.

You may well find it useful to have two to three swaddle blankets and two to three receiving blankets. Then when your baby is a few months old you may like to switch to baby sleeping bags which are great as baby cannot kick them off!

When putting baby to bed with blankets ensure they are tucked under the armpits so baby cannot wriggle underneath

Tips for using blankets with your baby

When using swaddle, receiving blankets or any other bedding with your baby, try following these tips:

  • When tucking your baby in, remember to make sure blankets are tucked below baby’s shoulder level and their feet are at the bottom of the bed, so that they cannot wriggle under the covers.
  • When swaddling keep the swaddle loose so that baby can move their legs freely as this is better for their hips.
  • Whatever type of baby blanket you choose, go for lighter layers, such as cellular blankets, that can be added and removed depending on the temperature of the room. You may find the temperature of baby’s room will drop overnight, so you may want to add a blanket before you go to bed.
  • Choose machine washable bedding. Accidents will happen with babies and it’s much easier to be able to throw everything into a washing machine.
  • Baby sleeping bags are fantastic once baby is a few weeks old. They prevent your little one from kicking the covers off their legs. They come in different tog ratings which you can use depending on the season and temperature of their room.

25 tricks to get baby to sleep

What is the best filling for a baby blanket

Manufacturers offer a wide range of natural and artificial fillers for baby blankets. What is better, how to choose, so that the child does not experience discomfort, but sleeps calmly and soundly. Our article will help you understand the pros and cons of different fillers and make the right choice.

Every mother strives to provide her child with maximum comfort during sleep. To do this, they dim bright lights, turn down the volume of the TV, and even try to walk around the apartment in such a way as to exclude sharp and loud sounds. nine0007 But there is one more component of a comfortable sleep – it is a properly selected blanket. Let’s get on with it and talk about it today, as the large and varied selection of fillings used in duvets can sometimes be confusing. To avoid this, consider which filler for a baby blanket to prefer.

Down

Filled with natural waterfowl down. It can be a swan, loon, goose. These duvets are lightweight and keep you warm. Although for a child, this quality can be negative, since overheating of the baby is possible, which is absolutely undesirable. nine0007 In addition, down tends to absorb moisture and become damp. This means that the blanket must be regularly dried and ventilated. Natural down filler is a favorable breeding ground for bed mites that cause allergic reactions.

Synthetic

An alternative to natural down is an artificial analogue made from padding polyester, comforter, holofiber. Such blankets are lightweight, good thermal conductivity and hypoallergenic, as well as easy and simple care. They can be machine washed at home. They dry quickly without losing their shape. nine0003

Wadded

These duvets are filled with natural cotton in the form of wadding. It does not cause allergic reactions, keeps heat well and “breathes”. But due to the impressive weight of such products, the popularity of cotton filler is falling. Blankets with such a filler are difficult to wash at home. Cotton wool dries for a long time and clumps, which significantly reduces the consumer qualities of a wadded blanket.

Woolen

These items also contain natural filler from sheep, camel, goat, as well as Australian merino or alpaca. Blankets with wool are light, hygroscopic and breathable. They reliably warm, keeping the balance of temperature and moisture. nine0007 There are varieties of woolen blankets in the form of small blankets, indispensable helpers for a walk and during trips to nature.
The disadvantages of such products include the need to protect them from the constant attacks of voracious moths that can spoil the appearance of the blanket.

Bamboo

The most modern filler, also of natural vegetable origin. Products are distinguished by their low weight, the absence of allergic irritations, foreign odors. The natural properties of the filler exclude the appearance of unwanted microorganisms and insects, which is very important when using. Bamboo-filled blankets do not require special care and serve for a long time without losing their properties. nine0007 Often such products are chosen for warm seasons, due to their lightness and naturalness.

How to choose

Before settling on one specific product, it is necessary to determine for yourself the goals and qualities expected from it. Hence the selection criteria will be formed:

• for summer or winter;
• large or small;
• natural or artificial;
• light or heavier.

Based on this, you will be able to choose a baby blanket with filler, which is guaranteed to create comfortable and healthy sleep conditions for your child, and the product itself will serve for a long time, while maintaining an attractive appearance. nine0003

How to choose the right baby blankets and pillows for babies? – article of the company “Mountain of Mattresses”

At Alvida you can order baby blankets and baby pillows .
Purchasing these bedding for a child’s room is not an easy task. A healthy and comfortable sleep of the child largely depends on this choice.

Important points in choosing baby blankets

In particular, baby blankets should have several positive qualities:
nine0003

  • First of all, it’s lightness. The baby blanket should not be too heavy so that the child can easily handle it while sleeping.
  • Second, breathability. A good blanket “breathes”, i.e. passes air directly to the child’s body. According to this indicator, it is not recommended to purchase a wadded blanket.
  • Thirdly, off-season. It means that in winter under such a blanket it is warm, and in summer it is hot. This requirement does not meet the duvet, which has a high density. The child may become hot under him and he opens up, as a result of which the sweaty body cools quickly and in the morning we most often get a cold. The best choice would be a blanket made of wool (For example, camel). nine0061

Hypoallergenicity is also considered an important factor. Most often, allergies are caused by mites and bed bugs, which eventually start up in blankets with down. However, sometimes in children, as well as in adults, there are allergic reactions to wool and some synthetic materials, from which fillers for blankets are often made. Therefore, before buying, it is recommended to check the child with an allergist.

Do not forget about durability and practicality. For example, lightweight baby blankets made of synthetic winterizer are easy to wash and retain their original shape after washing. However, it can also cause allergies in some children.
nine0003

Thus, we cannot make an unambiguous choice in favor of one or another type of blanket. Much depends on the individual characteristics of the child. You can consult on this issue with specialists from Alvida.

Pillow selection for children

Before purchasing a pillow for a child, you need to pay special attention to the quality of the internal filler:

    • Down pillows. Usually they are filled with down and feathers of geese and some other waterfowl. Here, several stages of fluff cleaning are considered an indicator of quality, preventing the appearance of harmful insects in pillows. nine0061
    • Pillows for children made of sheep wool.

What to Do If Your Infant Falls Off the Bed – Cleveland Clinic

You cover all the sharp edges on your furniture. You plug all the electrical sockets, latch all the drawers and block off the staircase. You’ve baby-proofed your house to the best of your ability.

But, inevitably, the day will come when your child gets hurt.

For some parents, that day comes when they turn their back to grab a diaper and baby rolls right off the changing table. Or they’re carrying baby along with a load of laundry down the stairs and trip and fall.

In this gut-wrenching moment of panic, you might be inclined to immediately pick your baby up off the floor and rush to the emergency room. But take a moment to breathe and observe first.

Sometimes babies need emergency medical attention after falling, and sometimes they’re just fine. You, of course, want to be sure your baby gets the medical attention they need, but you also don’t want to put them through unnecessary stress – and rack up medical bills — from an unneeded ER visit.

Pediatrician Ei Ye Mon, MD, provides some advice to assist in your decision-making.

Babies and falls

This scenario happens more often than you might think. Falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in kids, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In children under age 1, falls account for over 50% of nonfatal injuries.

And most of the time, children are not severely injured. But
infants under 12 months of age have more fragile skulls, which makes falls more
risky for them, Dr. Ye Mon says.

“The younger they are, the more dangerous it is for a
serious head injury, no matter the mechanism of the fall or how high it is,” she
says.

Advertising Policy

Is it an emergency?

It can be hard to tell whether infants have sustained an
injury or are in pain, but there are a few key signs to look for.

Before picking up a child after a fall, check for obvious
signs of head trauma, which would warrant an immediate call to 9-1-1 for
emergency help. Those signs include:

  • Loss of consciousness.
  • Vomiting.
  • Discharge or blood coming out of the nose or ears.
  • Swelling of the soft spot.
  • Bruising or swelling along the head, or obvious skull fracture.

If any of these signs are present, avoid the urge to pick up
your child and comfort them. “With head traumas, it’s possible that they’ve
also injured their neck or spine, and you don’t want to possibly worsen the
injury by moving them,” Dr. Ye Mon says.

A deformity anywhere on the body that looks like it could be
a broken bone should also be treated as an emergency.

If the baby is having a seizure after a fall, gently roll
them to their side before calling 9-1-1, she adds.

If the child is alert and crying (that’s a normal reaction
for a startled baby, even when there is no injury), and there are no obvious
signs of injury, gently pick them up and console them.

“If they don’t improve after you console them, then I would
be concerned,” Dr. Ye Mon says.

Keep a close watch for the next 24 hours

Symptoms of an injury might not be obvious right away, so even
if you don’t think emergency medical care is needed, keep a close eye on your
baby’s behavior over the next 24 hours.

Advertising Policy

“Usually, once you’ve passed that 24-hour mark, it’s safe to
say that anything scary is less likely,” Dr. Ye Mon says.

Babies are likely to want to go to sleep after a fall, whether they have a concussion or not. Dr. Ye Mon says it isn’t necessary to try to keep them awake to monitor them, but you should try waking them every few hours to make sure they’re rousable. If they’re not, seek immediate medical care.

If you notice any behavior that is out of the ordinary – if
your baby is more fussy than usual or inconsolable – that’s something that
should be checked out by a doctor, too.

And, if you have other reasons to suspect that your baby is
injured, trust your parental instincts.

“If parents have any concerns at all, it’s never wrong to have them evaluated by a doctor to be on the safer side, especially at that age,” Dr. Ye Mon says.

Prevention is key

You can’t talk about falls without talking about preventing
them in the first place.

Dr. Ye Mon recommends that babies do not sleep in adult beds
or on other elevated surfaces unattended – even if you think they aren’t
rolling yet. It’s even smart to place car seats or bouncy seats on the floor
instead of a chair or kinds of elevated furniture that they could potentially
fall off of.

And as hard as it is, try not to multitask. Use both hands
to carry a baby and ensure that their neck is always supported.

Caution! Child may fall from diaper changing table! Risk of head injury is high and hospital stay may be required

Diaper changing tables are necessary for changing baby diapers while on the go. Large commercial facilities often have diaper changing tables in restrooms and baby rooms. It has been reported that some children fell from diaper changing tables and got injured. Some time ago, NCAC issued an alert on this problem1 and relevant organizations made efforts aimed at preventing children from such falling accidents. 2

The Medical Facilities Network3 received 58 accident reports4 in about 9 years since December 2010 that children fell from diaper changing tables in public spaces (data registered through December 31, 2019). Among the 58 cases, cases of head injuries amounted to 41 cases (71%), 8 cases of which required hospital stay.

NCAC has analyzed the accident reports received by the Medical Facilities Network and has conducted an online questionnaire survey to find out how the products are used. Based on the findings, NCAC would like to share information on this issue and urge relevant organizations to take measures.

  1. 1 “Beware of falling from foldable diaper changing tables!” (released on October 5, 2007)
  2. 2 Japanese government agencies requested building managers to display precautions for using diaper changing tables and to carry out safety checks, releasing the following documents: “Prevention of falling from diaper changing tables in public spaces (request)” by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on July 25, 2007 and “Prevention of falling from diaper changing tables” by the Consumer Affairs Agency on December 21, 2010.
  3. 3 The Medical Facilities Network is a joint project by the Consumer Affairs Agency and NCAC which started operating from December 2010. The network collects accident reports on people receiving treatment at medical facilities after suffering life-threatening or bodily injuries in their daily lives.
  4. 4 Data received from December 2010 through December 31 in 2019. The above inquiries were categorized and counted for this report.

Summary of the accident reports from the Medical Facilities Network

  • The Medical Facilities Network received 58 accident reports informing that children aged three years or younger fell from diaper changing tables in public spaces.
  • Infants capable of rolling over in bed and pulling to stand begin to be prone to falling from diaper changing tables.
  • The most common injured part was the head, which accounted for 71% of all the cases. Nine children required hospital stay. Of these, 8 children got injured in the head.

Typical cases

[Case1]

When I was trying to take something from my bag, my child fell from the diaper changing table. She was diagnosed as fracture of parietal and occipital bones. She stayed hospital for 6 days.

(girl aged 4 months)

[Case2]

When I was washing my hands, my child stood up on the diaper changing table and fell from it. After being diagnosed as skull fracture and acute extradural hematoma, he stayed hospital for 5 days.

(boy aged 1 year and 8 months)

[Case3]

My baby fell from the diaper changing table when I was helping another child in the restroom. He was diagnosed as parietal bone fracture, acute extradural hematoma and scalp hematoma. He stayed hospital for 9 days

(boy aged 8 months)

[Case4]

When I was disposing of used diapers, my child fell from the diaper changing table and bruised her head.

(girl aged 7 months)

User questionnaire survey results

NCAC has conducted an online questionnaire survey among 1,000 consumers having children aged 3 years or younger and experience of using diaper changing tables in public spaces while on the go.

Incidents where children fell or nearly fell from diaper changing tables (n=1,000)

  • Among 1,000 respondents, 46 caregivers encountered that children fell from diaper changing tables, and 334 caregivers encountered that children nearly fell from diaper changing tables. The total ratio of them account for 38%.

Situation where children fell or nearly fell from diaper changing tables (n=380)

  • Diaper changing tables are often installed in multi-purpose restrooms. They are mostly foldable.
  • 74% of caregivers didn’t use the attached safety belt.
  • 86% of caregivers moved away or looked away from children. 58% of them replied that such unattended time was between 1 to 3 seconds.
  • When children fell or nearly fell from diaper changing tables, 70% of caregivers were taking out something from their bags or disposing of used diapers.

Things or surroundings that respondents would like to have for convenience or safety (n=1,000)

  • Barriers and belts to prevent children from falling, wider space for a child to lie, baggage compartment and trash can next to the diaper changing table

Advice for consumers

  • It was found that a child might move and fall from a diaper changing table even within 1 to 3 seconds while taking something out of a bag or disposing of used diapers. Before using a diaper changing table, caregivers are recommended to make necessary preparations. Decluttering and disposing of trashes should be done after picking up a baby. The attached safety belt should be used to prevent a child from falling.
  • If a child falls from a diaper changing table, it is highly likely that the child suffers from head injury. In case of falling and hitting the head, take the child to hospital.

Request to businesses

  • It has been reported that some children fell from diaper changing tables. NCAC requests manufacturers to develop and promote safer diaper changing tables. NCAC also requests manufacturers to further raise consumer awareness of falling risks and safety precautions for using the products.

Request to the government

It has been reported that some children fell from diaper changing tables. Therefore, NCAC would like to request the followings.

  • NCAC request the government to give proper instruction to the manufacturers so that they develop and promote safer diaper changing tables and further raise consumer awareness of falling risks and safety precautions for using the products.
  • Questionnaire results show that 86% of caregivers moved or looked away from children, and 58% of them did so for only 1 to 3 seconds. NCAC requests the government to urge building managers to improve facility conditions so that caregivers can change baby diapers safely without moving or looking away from children.
  • NCAC requests the government to further raise consumer awareness of falling risks and safety precautions for using the products.

Why is it dangerous for a baby to fall off the changing table?

Very often this happens almost instantly. It is necessary to be distracted and the child rolls over to the edge of the changing table and falls down. According to 2013 medical statistics, more than 80 percent of all injuries in children under two years of age occur at home, with fall-related injuries at the top of the list. What types of injuries are most common and how to avoid them? These and other questions are answered below by pediatric surgeons and pediatricians of the Markushka Children’s Clinic.

What are the most common injuries?

If a child falls from the height of the changing table, which may seem small to some careless parents, serious bodily injury can result. And first of all – craniocerebral injuries, since the child’s head in relation to other parts of the body is quite large and heavy.
Head injuries in children are classified according to severity as minor injuries (concussion, also has varying degrees of severity), moderate injuries (brain contusion) and severe (severe brain contusion, intracranial hematomas, skull fractures).

Two factors contribute to severe injuries. Firstly, a small child has not yet developed protective reflexes and, naturally, he cannot reflexively protect his head from a blow. Secondly, the cranial bones are not yet strong enough, and in the first months of life they are not fully formed and are easily damaged (despite the fact that they are connected by natural shock absorbers in the form of sutures and fontanelles). In addition, the blood vessels in the meninges are thin-walled and can be damaged by a sharp blow, leading to threatening intracranial hemorrhages.

However, more than 90 percent of traumatic brain injuries caused by a table fall are diagnosed with concussion of varying severity, which is usually not assessable at the first moment after the fall. This requires continuous and careful monitoring of the child for 24-48 hours. If parents notice even the slightest deviations in normal behavior, it is necessary to urgently contact a pediatric surgeon or call a pediatrician at home. In general, it is desirable to do this, even if the parents believe that the blow in the fall was minor, since only a specialist can correctly diagnose the severity of the injury.

Why do I need to see a pediatrician?

The brains of a young child and an adult are significantly different and this leads to significant differences in the symptoms of a concussion.

Symptoms of concussion in children under one year of age may be mild. The child quite often does not lose consciousness, but vomiting (single or multiple), nausea, blanching of the skin, increased drowsiness (but poor sleep), tearfulness, unreasonable anxiety, and abnormal pupillary reaction to light may occur. Such symptoms, as a rule, are not enough for an accurate diagnosis and instrumental examination and additional diagnostic methods are necessary. Moreover, immediately after the injury, a small child may feel quite well (state of compensation), but then the above symptoms quickly appear and increase.

Additional and urgent diagnostics, especially in severe injuries, are prescribed by pediatric surgeons, neurologists, traumatologists in a children’s medical center (polyclinic). For this, neurosonography (for young children), head x-ray, computed tomography of the brain (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG) are used. The complex of such methods allows you to make an accurate diagnosis and start timely treatment.

How to avoid falling off the changing table?

Children’s falls resulting in injury are not their fault, but their parents’ fault and the result of their carelessness. A small child is developing rapidly, and if yesterday he lay quietly on the changing table, today he can be more active. Therefore, you should always keep your hand on the child when he is on the table. If you need to move to a distance greater than the length of an outstretched arm, then the baby must be shifted to a safe place.

Child caught falling baby

Footage of the baby being rescued was captured on internal surveillance camera. This family miraculously escaped tragedy!

The disturbing moment of the fall of a one-year-old baby was accidentally caught on an internal surveillance camera installed in the house. Everything happened very quickly. The mother of five children, Tila Levy, stepped away from the changing table for just a minute, on which her 11-month-old son Eitan was lying. At this time, the baby rolled over the edge and flew head down. The fall of a child from such a height could have ended in tragedy if at that moment his elder brother, Joseph, had not been next to Eitan. By some miracle, a nine-year-old boy managed to put his hands forward and catch the baby. Then a frightened Tila jumped up to the children. Seeing what happened, she hugged Joseph tightly and thanked him for saving his brother. Later, the proud mother posted a video on social networks to tell the whole world about the incredible act of her eldest son. And soon these shots hit all American television channels:

As Tila later said, that day she was alone at home with her children. When she changed Eitan’s diaper, he was very calm. The boy lay on the changing table and moved his arms and legs, but the mother could not even think that in a second her child might fall. Teela realizes that she made a mistake that day by turning her back to the changing table, but is happy that Joseph was there and prevented trouble.

“I must have done something good in my life since heaven sent me this guy,” says the proud mother.

The little hero himself cannot explain how exactly he managed to catch the child. “I couldn’t do it again, because I can’t even lift my brother,” he says.

Very good, yet odd.

I loved the characters though I did wish that the movie didn’t end so fast, I would have loved to see someone’s wife find out. There are a lot of interesting and sleazy events taking place in this film and oddly enough you’ll find yourself glued to the seat begging for more craziness to happen as the story line unfolds. This film is dramatically insane with hot romances and yet its a little disturbing once you factor in the age and lives that they lead. These girls are not your typical high school students, don’t expect anything but slightly tamed adult material from this flick. This movie in my opinion is a must see, and most definitely not for people with an open mind.

Recent babysitter reviews in Philadelphia, PA

Brian S.

Brian is all-around wonderful. He is responsible while also kind and fun. My 10-year old son was very happy to play sports and games. Brian also made sure that he completed his homework and anything else we asked of him.

– Deborah S.

Jailyn A.

Jailyn has been great with our toddler, earning his trust almost immediately and doing great with playtime and bedtime. Highly recommend!

– Lauren M.

Kristina M.

Kristy is the kindest caregiver. She adores our baby and provides gentle and kind care. She is almost too helpful, if our tiny is sleeping she is always busy making our lives easier. We love Kristy , so don’t steal her away. But when our little grows up you will be lucky to have her!

– Aviva R.

Andrea L.

Andrea was really lovely and professional. She has various certifications and extensive experience in early childhood care/monitoring, which is a bonus. Andrea arrived on time and was very warm and energetic with my 1. 5 year old son. The best part was that she sent frequent photos and updatesthroughout their afternoon and evening, which I really appreciated because I could see what they were up to when I was missing him or worried (which was often, since I almost never leave him with a sitter!). Last minute circumstances scrapped our original plan for their day, and Andrea was able to adjust quickly and find appropriate, safe, fun activities outdoors, then kept my son occupied in a small hotel room. When I came home, he was sleeping peacefully and was not sunburned despite the bright sun that day. I would definitely recommend Andrea to anyone in or visiting Philadelphia. She’s also an experienced sleep trainer and can do sessions for anyone struggling with their child’s sleep!…

– Natasha S.

Olivia C.

Olivia is great! Our 2 kids (ages 3 and 1) love her. She’s attentive, kind, and a good communicator.

Social Worker Seeking Part Time/occasional Babysitting Opportunities

Description:

Hi! My name is Laura and I’m excited to be a part of the Care.com community! I am originally from Kansas but came to the east coast for college and never left. I’m a proud aunt of 7 and I have experiencebabysitting for infants and children of all ages. I’m a Social Worker and really love what I do but I’m looking for occasional/part time babysitting.
My work schedule is flexible but I’m mainly looking for late afternoons, evenings, and weekend opportunities. I’d prefer to meet families briefly first so we can get to know each other and I can meet the children. Recently this has been be via FaceTime or at least a phone call. I find that it puts everyone at ease and makes the children feel more comfortable when I do come over to babysit. I’m happy to meet in person ahead of time but if the time (commute + time together) is more than an hour I do ask for $20. Please let me know if you have any questions, I’d love to hear from you!…

Do Babies Need Dental Insurance?

If you don’t have dental insurance provided through an employee-sponsored program, you can still get an affordable plan directly from an insurance provider. But if you have a family with small children, you might be wondering: do infants need dental insurance?

Dental insurance can help pay for a portion of dental costs for any covered individual, even babies. Cavities can occur as soon as a baby has its first tooth – and while baby teeth aren’t permanent, they’re still crucial to good development and oral health.

Luckily, adding a baby to your individual or family dental plan is usually rather affordable and straightforward. Learn how to find a baby dental insurance plan to help you save on the cost of pediatric dental care.

Why do babies need dental insurance?

Starting at a very young age, dental insurance can help save money on the cost of routine as well as emergency dental care. While it’s still possible to get pediatric dental care without dental insurance, it’ll usually come at a higher out-of-pocket cost.

Here’s why getting dental insurance to cover your infant’s dental care might be a good idea.

Baby teeth can get cavities, too

You might think that cavities are only something to be worried about with older children or teenagers. But according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 21% of children aged two to five had untreated cavities¹. What’s more, according to a CDC 2018 study dental caries (the scientific term for cavities) are the most common chronic disease among youth aged 6 to 19 years². These cavities can be caused by natural sugars in fruit juice and even milk, and of course sugary snack foods and sweets.

Early Childhood Caries (ECC) can erode the baby teeth of even the youngest child. While baby teeth do eventually fall out, untreated ECC can lead to infections that spread to other parts of the body. Neighboring teeth can shift into the empty space, causing adult teeth to crowd as they come in. Cavities can also be painful and uncomfortable for babies and toddlers³.

The American Dental Association (ADA) views ECC—also called baby bottle tooth decay—as a significant public health issue in select populations. To help prevent ECC, the ADA urges parents to bring their children to a dentist within six months of the first tooth emerging. The ADA also recommends that nursing mothers take more initiative with their own dental care to decrease the risk of a child developing ECC⁴.

Tooth decay in babies is not just caused by eating unhealthy snack foods. Unrestricted nocturnal breastfeeding, excessive use of a sippy cup and failure to periodically check a baby’s teeth are some innocuous mistakes that can lead to ECC⁵.

Dental insurance for a baby can encourage healthy habits for life

Research has shown that oral health is linked to overall health – and that dental insurance plays a role in helping you maintain good health. Americans with dental benefits are more likely to go to the dentist, take their children to the dentist, receive restorative care, and experience greater overall health⁶. Individuals without it are more likely to have extractions and dentures and less likely to have restorative care or receive treatment for gum disease. In addition, those without dental benefits are more likely to have other illnesses, including heart disease (67% more likely), diabetes (29%), and general bone decay (50%)⁷.

Good dental hygiene is also linked to healthy habits, and good habits should start as early as possible. Taking your child to the dentist early not only gives your dentist the chance to check for tooth decay and discuss any other conditions or habits, but it also helps you establish that good oral hygiene is a priority in your family. In addition to taking your child to the dentist, you should also start brushing your child’s teeth with a children’s toothbrush as soon as the first tooth comes in to develop healthy habits and prevent oral disease⁸.

Dental insurance for a baby can help cover unexpected problems

Once babies start to get teeth, those teeth can also get damaged in accidents. With all the crawling, toddling, and exploring that babies do, they can occasionally fall or chip a tooth. In fact, nearly 50% of children will have some type of oral injury during their childhood⁹. Chipped teeth, cracked teeth, and other oral injuries can lead to more serious complications, which can be prevented with early intervention.

These sorts of injuries can be expensive to correct, but dental insurance can usually help you save on the cost of pediatric dental treatment.

At what age do babies need dental insurance?

The American Dental Association recommends bringing your baby to the dentist soon after the first tooth comes in and no later than the child’s first birthday¹⁰. This may sound rather early, but as soon as your baby’s teeth break through the gums, they’re at risk of developing cavities.

So, when do babies need dental insurance? You may want to consider purchasing dental insurance coverage for your infant shortly before taking them to the dentist for the first time, if not sooner. Dental insurance can help you save on the cost of preventative care, including pediatric dental checkups, cleanings, and X-rays. Guardian Direct® dental insurance plans cover preventative care at 80-100% with no waiting periods. On the other hand, if you don’t have dental insurance, you’ll typically be responsible to pay the full cost of any preventative services received.

If your child happens to develop early childhood caries or experience a dental injury, dental insurance may help cover a portion of the cost of treatment for those conditions as well. But keep in mind that coverage for this sort of treatment is often subject to waiting period requirements of 6-12 months, and maximum benefit amounts – the sooner you purchase dental insurance for your infant, the sooner they’ll be covered if they require dental treatment.

Dental insurance options for your baby

Dental insurance coverage can help protect more than just your baby’s teeth – it can help protect your finances and help reduce the cost of caring for your entire family’s oral health.

Many Americans receive dental insurance coverage through their full-time employer. If you have access to dental benefits through an employer-sponsored group plan, you can add your baby to the same plan you are signed up for in most cases. Check with your benefits department to see if that might be an option for you.

If you’re self-employed, unemployed, or don’t receive dental coverage through your employer, it’s still possible to obtain dental insurance coverage not only for your baby but for your entire family. You can purchase individual dental insurance directly from an insurance carrier.

When it comes to choosing an individual dental insurance plan for you and your baby, you have quite a few options. Guardian Direct® offers several dental insurance plans to help you afford excellent dental care for your kids.

Dental Insurance for Kids | Dental Insurance for Children

A guide to dental insurance for infants and children

When a child is born, getting medical coverage is a priority. But it’s also important to have dental insurance, too. This guide to dental insurance for children helps provide everything you need to know.

When and why to get coverage

Babies usually start getting teeth around 6 months of age and cavities can develop as quickly as teeth appear,1 so consider getting dental insurance as early as possible. Your dentist will check to see if your child’s smile is off to a good start and provide useful information about dental disease prevention, nutrition and dental development.

Unfortunately, children can develop cavities by their first birthday. Childhood cavities can cause pain, difficulties eating and speaking, and infections that can damage permanent teeth developing underneath their gums. 2 If these cavities are severe or extensive, very young children may need to be treated in a hospital while under general anesthesia. This can have an emotional and financial effect on parents.

By age 5, more than 20% of children have had cavities and almost 10% have untreated decay.3 Poor dental health in childhood is likely to carry into adulthood. Fortunately, most childhood dental disease is preventable through good oral hygiene, proper nutrition and regular dental visits.

Dental insurance makes care more affordable and children with dental insurance are twice as likely to receive dental services than those without it.4 And a healthy smile is even important for learning, as students with poor oral health usually have lower grades and are absent more often than those students with good oral health.5

What to look for in coverage

Coverage varies among plans. As you compare plans, make sure you review what is and isn’t covered. Consider your children’s ages and their needs over the next year. Look for plans that cover all or most of the cost of preventive care (exams, cleanings, X-rays) and basic care (fillings, tooth extractions). Most plans cover fluoride treatments and dental sealants for cavity prevention in children, but check to make sure that they are included.

Add the total potential costs, including deductibles, out-of-pocket limits and co-insurance or co-payments (i.e.; the percentage or share you pay for a procedure), and make sure your dental insurer has a large network of dentists, including pediatric dentists and specialists. To take full advantage of in-network savings, see if your preferred dentist is in-network.

Future needs to consider

Your children’s permanent teeth will begin to come in around age 6. Coverage for dental sealants is vital at this time because permanent back teeth (molars and premolars) should be sealed right away.

Around age 7 your dentist may suggest your child visit an orthodontist to assess future needs. If your child is likely to need braces, you may want a plan that partially pays for major dental work and orthodontics.6

How to get coverage

  • Employer coverage: If you or your spouse have a dental plan through your employer, you may be able to get a family plan during open enrollment. Also, having a baby is a qualifying life event, so you can add your newborn to your benefits within a period determined by your plan.
  • Individual and family coverage: You can purchase a plan to fit your family’s needs from companies like Delta Dental.
  • Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP): These state-funded plans are available to low-income families.7

treatment in hospitals and clinics in Dubai, healthcare system

The level of medicine in the UAE

The UAE government has set a goal to make the healthcare system in the country one of the best in the world. Efforts are directed towards improving the quality of healthy life and its duration. The work is carried out in several directions:

    1. Hospitals are being built and equipped with modern equipment.
    2. Organize treatment according to international standards.
    3. Implement telemedicine and artificial intelligence.
    4. Attract qualified doctors from abroad.
    5. Attract investments in healthcare through free economic zones, business incubators and the development of medical tourism.

    Residence permit in the UAE

Comfort and equipment of hospitals in the UAE. Hospitals, medical and rehabilitation centers are built with experience in the hospitality industry: they pay attention to comfort and interior design. In the United Arab Emirates, you can find wards with the level of service as in a seven-star hotel.

Hospitals in the UAE use state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment. For example, they operate with Da Vinci surgical robotic manipulators, and also use Gamma Knife or Cyber Knife devices to remove tumors without incisions.

International approvals . The United Arab Emirates leads the world in the number of medical institutions with the international JCI certificate. There are 107 certified hospitals in the country. For comparison, there are only 29 of them in Turkey.

JCI standards help ensure that medical staff work together to reduce the risk of errors and ensure patient safety. However, they do not regulate the treatment itself.

Telemedicine and artificial intelligence . Residents of the UAE can receive an initial consultation with a doctor remotely through the application. Foreign patients can consult a doctor online before traveling to the UAE.

Telemedicine section on Dubai medical tourism website

The UAE is implementing artificial intelligence to process patient examination results. A special algorithm tracks the history of changes in the results of tests, ultrasound, tomography and other studies. This helps to make an accurate diagnosis and identify possible health problems even before a person feels them.

The UAE is recruiting doctors from abroad to reduce waiting times for patients and improve the quality of care.

The shortage of qualified doctors is one of the problems of medicine in the United Arab Emirates. There are 28 doctors per ten thousand inhabitants in the country, about the same as in China or Japan. In Europe, this figure is about twice as high, for example, in Switzerland – 45 doctors per ten thousand inhabitants, and in Austria – 55.

It is impossible to quickly train a large number of doctors, so the United Arab Emirates attracts foreign specialists. Doctors who want to work in the country are provided with ten-year resident visas – an analogue of a residence permit.

How to get a residence permit in the UAE

Investments in medicine. To develop medicine and attract investment in the UAE, four medical cities were founded:

    • Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi;
    • Dubai Healthcare City in Dubai;
    • Sharjah Healthcare City in Sharjah.

Medical City is a city block with hospitals, specialized clinics, medical and rehabilitation centers, hotels, health and spa centers. A patient in a medical city can live comfortably, be treated and recover.

On the websites of medical cities, you can choose a doctor, make an appointment or get an online consultation. In addition to treatment and recovery, medical cities train specialists for the healthcare sector.

Why foreigners come to the UAE for treatment

85% of foreign patients come to the UAE from Asia, the Persian Gulf and Africa, the remaining 15% are mostly residents of the UK and the CIS. Foreigners choose the UAE for various reasons: because of the conditions in clinics, the cost of procedures, the opportunity to receive qualified assistance, or to combine treatment with relaxation.

    • aesthetic surgery, dermatology and cosmetology;
    • orthopedics and sports medicine;
    • dentistry;
    • reproductive medicine;
    • comprehensive diagnostics and preventive examinations – check.

The cost of treatment depends on the hospital and the level of comfort that the patient chooses – like in a hotel. Prices for treatment in the UAE are approximately the same as in Israel and Turkey, with a higher level of comfort.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai have government programs for the development of medical tourism. The Dubai government aims to become one of the top 10 medical tourism destinations in the world.

There is no unified system of compulsory health insurance in the country – each emirate adopts its own laws on health insurance. UAE citizens are provided with health insurance by the state, they can apply for treatment free of charge.

Compulsory health insurance in Abu Dhabi and Dubai . In Abu Dhabi, the compulsory health insurance system is called Daman – Thiqa, in Dubai – Saada.

For employees, health insurance is provided by the employer. In Abu Dhabi, the employer also insures the spouse of the employee and up to three minor children. In Dubai, the employer insures only the employee, while the latter insures children and other non-working family members.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai self-employed, self-employed and non-working residents buy their own insurance.

How to open a company in Dubai and get a resident visa

For lack of health insurance, a fine of is imposed up to 500 AED ($136) for each month of absence of the policy. Without a medical policy, they will not issue or extend a resident visa in the UAE.

The minimum health insurance for Essential Benefits Plans in Dubai costs 550 AED ($150) per year. Such insurance can be used by non-working residents and those who earn less than 4000 AED (109$0) per month. It covers up to 150,000 AED ($40,872) per year, while the insured pays 20% of the cost of medical services.

Residents of the UAE can purchase extended insurance to increase the insurance amount, expand the list of medical services and clinics.

    Life in the UAE

Under insurance, contact private or public clinics . The list of private medical organizations depends on the insurance company and the type of insurance. The services of public clinics are also paid, they are covered by any policy of compulsory medical insurance.

To get an appointment at a public hospital, you must register with the UAE public health system – issue a Health card. Foreign residents receive a Health Card in addition to compulsory insurance. This is not required, but the card does offer several benefits, such as reduced treatment costs and a wider range of available hospitals and specialists.

Registered in the public health system on the e-services website of the Ministry of Health. The health card is virtual, it is tied to an identity card of a resident of the UAE. The service costs 500 AED ($136) per year.

How to get a residence permit in the UAE. A residence permit in the UAE is called a residence visa. It gives the right to live, study, work or do business in the country. A residence visa for a period of 1 to 10 years is received by real estate buyers, entrepreneurs, highly qualified specialists, freelancers, students, pensioners.

Investors receive a residence visa for 2 years or 10 years for the purchase of real estate from 750,000 AED ($204,000) or from 2,000,000 AED ($545,000). The visa is also available to members of their spouses and children.

    Dentistry in the UAE

Dental services are not included in the minimum insurance and are not always covered by the compulsory insurance policy. Emergency care for severe pain or inflammation will be provided in any case, and insurance may not cover the costs of cleaning or filling.

Separate dental offices, clinics and dental departments at hospitals operate in the UAE. As a rule, they are well equipped: for example, modern X-ray machines are installed there to conduct an examination immediately before treatment.

Dentistry is one of the areas of medical tourism in the UAE. Dubai and Abu Dhabi clinics offer medical tourists a full range of services from diagnostics and whitening to veneering and implant placement.

The UAE has a state program for children’s health aimed at preventing diseases. As part of the program, they diagnose genetic diseases in newborns, vaccinate children against dangerous infections for free, open children’s departments in hospitals and specialized children’s hospitals.

Vaccination of children in the United Arab Emirates is mandatory , vaccinations are free of charge from birth to five years of age. Vaccinate against tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, polio, measles, rubella, mumps, pneumonia. Girls are additionally vaccinated against the human papillomavirus.

To get vaccinated, you need to contact the state clinic, otherwise the Public Health Center. A health card is not required for vaccination.

If the child is ill, then they turn to the pediatrician, and not to the family doctor, like in Europe. Pediatricians work in private and public clinics, you can choose any doctor, regardless of the patient’s place of residence. Admission costs from $15 to $70.

How to get an appointment with a doctor in the UAE

Appointments with a doctor are booked online through a mobile application or website. In case of health problems, they first turn to a therapist who makes a diagnosis and gives an appointment or directs them to a diagnosis or to a specialized specialist. If you go for an ultrasound, tomography or to a specialist without a referral from a therapist, then the insurance will not cover the costs.

A resident of the UAE can consult any doctor, regardless of their place of residence. The medical record and medical history are kept electronically – the patient can view the diagnosis and appointments through the public services application or on the website of the electronic services of the Ministry of Health.

An electronic medical record allows you to use artificial intelligence to detect negative changes in your health in a timely manner.

Dubai residents can view test results and appointments, find a doctor or hospital on the Dubai Now mobile app

    4. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have compulsory health insurance for foreign residents. The employer pays insurance for employees, the rest buy the policy themselves. Medical insurance costs from $150.
    5. Foreigners with a residence permit in the UAE apply for insurance to private clinics with which the insurance company has an agreement. To apply for insurance at a public hospital, you need to register with the public health system – link a virtual health card to a UAE resident ID. How to conduct a conversation with an applicant for a nanny position for your children. I know when you lie! [CIA methods for detecting lies]

Are there more important interviews than the ones you conduct to determine the most suitable candidate to babysit your own child? First of all, remember: if you have a complete family, then both spouses must take part in the interview with the candidate. In addition to a detailed discussion of upcoming responsibilities, it is necessary to carefully study the biography of the applicant, including for violations of the law (especially sexual offenses), as well as letters of recommendation and reviews from previous employers. Pay special attention to those recommendations and reviews that the applicant himself did not mention. nine0003

At a certain point in the conversation, introduce the applicant to your children, even if some of them are infants, and observe their reactions. How do they feel the first time they are around a prospective nanny? Children have a well-developed ability to feel uncomfortable or insecure, which manifests itself in obvious changes in behavior, so look and listen for their first reaction to a new person.

Also, always be mindful of your own instincts when assessing the manners of the future nanny when she touches your child and holds him in her arms. Are you satisfied with the degree of accuracy and care that manifests itself at her first contact with your child, at the first manipulations with clothes and other things of the baby? Careful attention to the environment in which the child lives is very important, as this is an indicator that the future nanny’s priority is the needs of the child, and not something else. nine0003

Does the applicant ask you questions that clearly show her interest in your baby’s good health and care?

We offer you a list of questions that you can ask during a conversation with a potential nanny.

Why did you decide to work as a nanny?

How long have you been babysitting?

What ages of children did you work with?

What ages of children did you enjoy working with the most? Why? nine0003

What ages of children would you least like to work with? Why?

Have you worked as a nanny for children of both sexes?

Are there any reasons why your name might appear on a list of people involved in sex crimes?

Why do you like babysitting the most?

What annoys or scares you the most about babysitting?

Tell us about the most difficult child you had to work with. nine0003

What do you think is the most difficult thing about babysitting?

If a baby starts crying, how soon will you come to him? (After hearing in response the words about any period of time, ask for an explanation why the applicant is doing this.)

If a baby starts crying, how soon will you pick him up? (Again, ask the applicant to explain his motives. )

What are your views on raising children? nine0003

What was the most rigorous way of improving discipline that you resorted to when working with children?

Tell me about the most unusual or dangerous situation that you managed to handle while performing your duties as a babysitter?

Describe your first aid skills. Have you been trained to perform the necessary actions in emergency situations? Where and how did you learn these skills?

Tell us about a family that has been the hardest for you to work with. Why was it difficult for you to deal with them? What actions do you think you could take while working with that family to improve your cooperation with them? nine0003

What aspects of babysitting do you find most frustrating?

What actions of a child can make you angry?

Has there ever been a time when a child’s behavior made you angry and pissed off, or just caused temporary, easily overcome, but quite strong irritation?

What are the behaviors of the children you find most difficult to work with?

Tell me about the most embarrassing or dangerous situation you have ever experienced while working as a nanny. nine0003

Which of your qualities is considered by former employers to be your main advantage?

Which of the qualities they considered your main shortcoming or weakness?

For what reason would you allow a child to do what his parents strictly forbid?

Are there any reasons why any of the letters of recommendation or testimonials might indicate that the employer does not rate you very highly as a nanny? nine0003

Is there anything else we haven’t discussed that I would like to know?

10 things your daycare may not tell you – Today’s Parent

Photo: iStockphoto

When Mary Lewis* handed her 16-month-old son over to her new daycare worker, the energetic toddler was greeted with warm hugs and big tickles. The boy’s already beaming face exploded in laughter and Lewis fairly skipped back to her car.

“To say I was relieved is an understatement,” says the Richmond Hill, Ont., mother. “I don’t think there is any anxiety greater than concern about your child’s care. My son’s daycare is his home away from home.”

Like most parents, Lewis had spent weeks researching daycares before finally selecting one. Everything about it checked out —the number of staff seemed more than adequate and all were fully trained. The facility was clean, kid-friendly and bright, the programming ideal.

After a few short weeks, however, things weren’t quite as rosy. The number of children swelled while the staff dwindled, and the caregivers Lewis did see regularly were not as qualified as she had been led to believe. Less than a month after enrolling her son, she withdrew him. “I didn’t want to; in fact I couldn’t imagine going through the exhausting ordeal of finding daycare all over again,” she says. “But I felt I had no choice.”

Finding the right daycare is one of the toughest tasks parents face, and once you’ve found one you’re happy with, it’s easy to let down your guard. The fact is, the majority of the approximately 10,000 licensed child care centres in Canada (including both home- and centre-based) are doing a good job of caring for their young charges. But even the best slip up occasionally. While provincial licensing ensures that facilities have met minimal health and safety requirements, that licence is no guarantee of consistently optimal quality, says Bronwen Lloyd, an early childhood development officer with Nova Scotia’s Department of Community Services.

So how do you ensure that your “really great daycare” hasn’t slipped into the ranks of the just-OK? “It requires constant parental vigilance and ongoing awareness,“ says Lloyd. The following troubleshooting list is a good place to start. Read on for the top ten issues your daycare may be skirting.

1. The staff-to-child ratio changes and you’re the last to know

When Alice Holland* dropped off her one-year–old son on his first day at a Burlington, Ont., home daycare, she was delighted to find two staff members cuddling and caring for six children. A few weeks later, that small group had grown to 12 without any new staff hired. “What’s worse,” says Holland, “I would frequently pick up Sam at the end of the day and find that the owner had left at nap time, leaving only one teacher on duty.”

Provincial laws stipulate the maximum number of children allowable per staff member—in Ontario, for example, it’s three staffers for every ten babies under 18 months; one for every five toddlers 18 to 30 months; and one for every eight children aged 30 months to five years. However, some experts estimate that breaches of the staff-to-child ratio represent up to one-fifth of all licensing violations. That’s consistent with the experiences of many parents who discover too late that their daycare uses somewhat creative accounting. After spending three days observing one daycare’s practices, Lewis realized that the one-to-three ratio she was promised was actually more like one-to-five. “The staff had staggered hours,” she says. “One of them came in halfway through the morning and another left early in the afternoon. That upset the ratio dramatically for a good chunk of the day.”

The high turnover rate in many daycares can also distort the staff-to-child balance. In The Unofficial Guide to Childcare, Canadian author Ann Douglas puts the rate at about 30 percent. And it’s not hard to understand why, says Lloyd: “I see a lot of burned-out teachers who feel underpaid and unappreciated. That’s why there are so many resignations.”

2. The teachers aren’t as qualified as you were told

When Marie Ellis* of Toronto started with her cozy neighbourhood caregiver, her then-one-year-old daughter was cared for by an experienced woman with a degree in early childhood education. In recent months, however, Ellis has found her toddler in the care of an untrained assistant. “She’s a perfectly nice young woman,” says Ellis, “But no one informed me that she had been hired. In fact I was never even introduced to her or filled in on her credentials and experience.”

And credentials count. A recent study, conducted at Rutgers University in New Jersey, links early learning and development with teacher qualifications. Specifically, the study found that three- and four-year-olds learn the most—socially, emotionally and cognitively—when their teachers have four-year degrees and specialized in early childhood education (ECE). These teachers are also more affectionate with children in their care and are less likely to punish them.

“The point for me is that parents should be kept up to speed on staffing issues,” says Ellis. “We should know who’s with our kids and what their qualifications are. Then it’s up to us to make decisions accordingly.”

3. The food isn’t as nutritious as advertised

Linda Condor* enrolled both her two-year-old son and six-month-old twins at a licensed daycare centre in her downtown Toronto community–but only after grilling the centre’s supervisor about a number of issues, including the nutritional content of meals and snacks. “I recall her mentioning menu items that included pasta with cheese and cheese sandwiches. I was appalled to discover after only a few months that my children were being fed a diet consisting mainly of processed foods such as packaged cheese slices and spaghetti out of a can,” says Condor. “And I mean the babies too.”

According to provincial regulations, licensed daycares are required to feed all children balanced midday meals and nutritious snacks; they must also post all menus in a public place. But Condor and Holland both found that the posted menus alternately glossed over or glorified the food actually served. “The menu would read ‘chicken’,” says Holland, “but, in fact, the kids were served frozen chicken fingers. ‘Granola’ was really artificially sweetened granola bars.”

Poor nutrition is high on Bronwen Lloyd’s “needs improvement” list. In her role overseeing dozens of childcare centres, she sees more Jell-O than she is comfortable with. “It’s easy and that makes it good for staff. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make it good for kids.”

4. You were told the facility is peanut-free, but…

On a bright day late last summer, Condor was happy to find her four-year-old son in the playground outside his daycare. She was not happy to find peanut shells scattered through the sand and to discover that the daycare worker has left her allergic son’s adrenalin-loaded syringe in his backpack, which was still hanging on his hook inside.

Because a growing number of Canadian children have life-threatening nut allergies, many public and private daycares voluntarily adopt peanut-free policies. But that may not mean the facility is peanut-proofed. “I was dropping my son off one morning and he started digging around in a cup sitting in one of the strollers parked inside the daycare,” says Condor. “The cup was full of trail mix that contained peanuts. Even though there was a huge sign on the door advising parents that the facility was peanut-free, somehow that snack made it past the doors of the daycare.”

Condor’s case is not an isolated one. Studies have found that 35 to 40 percent of kids allergic to peanuts will experience and accidental peanut ingestion at some point within a three- to four-year period. Lloyd says parents must demand that teachers become hyper-vigilant. Condor even arranged for a health-care consultant to visit her child’s daycare to train all of the workers on anaphylactic control and response.

5. You’re promised daily outdoor time—“weather permitting” — and you find that that weather almost never permits

“First it was too rainy, then it was too cold—my son rarely seemed to see the light of day,” says Holland. “There always seemed to be some excuse. One glorious bright, sunny day I was told the children couldn’t go outside because the roofers were working there. ” Daycares need to have a minimum amount of play area for each child—in Ontario, for example, it’s 5.6 square metres (60 square feet) of fenced outdoor play area per child, and 2.8 metres (30 square feet) for indoor play. But how frequently that space is used is left to the discretion of childcare providers.

In Ellis’s case, outings were dropped off the centre’s programming entirely—without parent’s knowledge. “My child’s caregiver used to take all the kids to different neighbourhood parks and playgrounds,” she says, “But now they tell me there are just too many kids to properly supervise these outings. I had no idea.”

6. The television is on too much

Ruth Doughty’s* 18-month-old son was happy to attend a home-based daycare with five other children, but Doughty believes his contentment owed much to a television that was on more than it was off. The TV occupied central real estate in the living room and the Toronto mom found it on most mornings when she arrived. “I was told morning cartoons and the occasional ‘rainy-day’ movie were the extent of the television watching,” she says. “But my son started asking for programs I knew nothing about and when I investigated I found there were more ‘rainy-day’ occasions than I was comfortable with.”

The mere existence of a TV in a daycare setting is a warning sign, according to Lloyd, who says the “electronic babysitter’ is often used to provide relief for overworked staff—at the expense of children. “I see one, I walk the other way,” is her blunt judgment call.

7. The disciplinary techniques make you scream

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare—you’re at work while your child is being yelled at and forced to sit in a corner. While the incidences of verbal and emotional abuse at the hands of a caregiver are extremely rare, raised voices, public scoldings and those ubiquitous time outs aren’t so uncommon. Finding the dividing line between effective behaviour management and what Toronto parent coach and preschool consultant Alyson Schafer calls the “the blame-shame game” is every child care provider’s responsibility.

Dartmouth, N.S., mom, Lillian Banfield* entrusted her three children to a neighbour with a home-based daycare. Banfield later learned that the caregiver forced each child, including her won, to eat everything on their plates, whether they liked it or not. “If they balked, she accused them of being picky eaters and of being spoiled at home,” says Banfield. “And they were told they’d get no dessert.” That strictly authoritarian style was not how Banfield and her husband wanted their kids handled. “I was so upset that my kids were being forced to do things and weren’t permitted to make their own decisions,” she says. “Years later my eldest son told me he would keep food in his mouth, then run to the bathroom to spit it out. I was appalled.”

Says Lloyd: “Teachers are stressed and tired, so they sometimes go immediately to extremes—like ultimatums, time outs or shouting—instead of taking time to talk, problem-solve and offer choices. I’ve even seen kids kicked out of daycare [for]. The potential for damaging self-esteem is tremendous. We’re not all born with the ability to relate to children—to speak to them in a way that gets results. That’s a special skill.”

It’s a skill parents have a right to expect from their child’s caregiver. Schafer suggests that parents make surprise visits to see their caregiver in action. But even before signing on, Lloyd advises moms and dads to ask for written documentation of discipline policies and, if no such documents exist, to test the staff’s tactics using as many real examples as possible. If the centre’s principles are inconsistent with your own, you’ve got a problem. If the daycare seems unwilling to divulge or discuss them, well, that could be a sign of even bigger problems to come.

8. The daycare worker doesn’t communicate and you have no clue how your child is progressing

When Marcy Barbaro registered her one-year-old daughter with a public daycare in her community and hour north of Toronto, she expected daily reports on how Santana spent her day — her small triumphs, her frustrations. She didn’t get them. In fact, Barbaro finds she has to quiz the caregivers with specific questions to get the information she craves — like what other children her daughter bonded with, what new skills she learned, what made her laugh or cry. “I think feedback from caregivers is essential,” says Barbaro. “The fact is, they’re there and we’re not. As a mother, that’s hard enough to swallow without feeling you have to beg to find out what made you child smile today or what new skills she’s developing.”

9. Your child is changing but the toys at his daycare aren’t

Bronwen Lloyd starts counting as soon as she sets foot in a daycare. She, like similar officials in other provinces, is looking for a minimum of seven key “learning areas”, including sand, water, art, books, blocks, puzzles and games and drama (dress-up). The next step, says Lloyd, is to ensure that the activities at each area are age-appropriate. A three-year-old seen playing with toys more suitable for a 12-month-old is a sign that perhaps the facility isn’t upgrading, or even rotating toys, the way they should. “You want children to have exposure to a range of activities so they are motivated on a number of developmental levels,” says Lloyd. “The trick is to ensure that children aren’t under-stimulated and bored. That’s why we’re such big fans of rotating toys—putting old ones away once children have gained mastery over them and bringing in newer, more challenging ones.”

10. Your daycare isn’t as inclusive as you hoped it would be

You’re a single parent and your child is only read books depicting so-called traditional families. Or perhaps your child has dark skin and the only dolls in the daycare are fair-skinned. Culturally, religiously and racially diverse children populate most daycares and while it may be unreasonable to expect caregivers to cater to each child individually, parents do have a right to expect sensitivity. That includes encouraging children to share their own stories and avoiding exclusive language. For many parents and education experts alike, reading inclusive books, feeding varied foods and offering diverse dolls and dress-up clothes isn’t just a daycare’s duty, it is a primary step in raising respectful, broad-minded children. “Feeling included is an important aspect of young self-esteem,” says Schafer. “All children have a right to be heard and acknowledged.”

The baby cries when the mother leaves: what is separation anxiety and how to deal with it

For mothers, leaving a child for the first time with a nanny or relatives is no less stressful than for the baby himself. How long will he cry? What if he can’t calm down? And what if they can’t manage without me? This condition is called separation anxiety. Child psychologist Ksenia Nesyutina told us how to learn how to say goodbye correctly – so that both the mother is calm and the child does not have problems with attachment. nine0003

What is separation anxiety

People of all ages experience separation anxiety, parting, moving, ending certain stages of life. This is separation anxiety. Adults know how to deal with any breakup if they have developed the appropriate skill in childhood. Children with separation anxiety do not know how to emotionally cope. When they anticipate that their mother is about to leave, they begin to act up and cry. This condition is most pronounced in children aged from about one and a half to three years. Or it happens when the child begins to sleep separately: at night, he can run to the parent’s bedroom for quite a long time to be close to dad and mom. nine0003

But separation anxiety still begins with the parent, because while the children are small, adults also experience negative emotions at the thought of separation. As a result, the mother knows that she needs to leave, begins to worry, and these feelings are transmitted to the child.

Why is it hardest for children from one and a half to three years old

Because it is at this age that a child realizes that he and his mother are not a single whole. Mom is a separate person, just like himself. He understands this, among other things, thanks to changes in his desires. Previously, he just wanted to eat and sleep, but now he wants a new toy or go for a walk – and parents no longer always do what the child wants. He hears phrases like “No, dear, we have to go home” or “We already bought you a toy yesterday, come on another time.” This is where the awareness of oneself as a separate person begins. But along with this state, anxiety and fear may appear: “Since mom is a separate person, she can always leave or want something else, not fulfill my desire.” The child begins to understand that he is not able to control other people, as he thought in an earlier period, when the needs were minimal and easily realized. nine0003

There is a stage in the development of a child – from about a year to a year and a half – when he begins to get carried away with the outside world

He already knows how to walk, take some things on his own – and begins to explore everything around. Some psychologists even call this period “romance with the world.” Parents usually sigh with relief at this time: “Well, thank God, the child has grown up, now he doesn’t sit in my arms, finally I can rest in peace and go about my business.” It seems to mothers that the most difficult stage – up to a year, when the baby is constantly in her arms and constantly asks for something – has passed. nine0003 Photo: Shutterstock / Marys Poly

However, after a few months, the child turns from a researcher into a person who does not let his mother go at all. It starts to seem to mom that something went wrong: only recently everything was fine, he let her go, played by himself, and then suddenly again like a little one, as if he was three months old. Parents may be angry at this, it may seem to them that they made a mistake somewhere or that the child is “broken”. But in fact, this is a normal stage of development, it just needs to be accepted. Anger or other negative emotions will not help the child cope with experiences, but will only complicate them. nine0003

What is the best age to start leaving a child with other adults

Starting at six months, you can leave your child with other adults, not with the mother. You can start with half an hour to increase this time to six or seven hours by the year. From this age, the child can gradually stay with his grandmother, nanny, dad – first for the whole day, then for a day, and then for several days. It won’t be traumatic. If a child from an early age gradually gets used to the idea that he will not always be with his mother, then later it will be easier for him to accept separation and spend time on his own. nine0003

Can parents increase separation anxiety? For example, a mother constantly and suddenly disappears somewhere and leaves the child either with her grandmother, or with a nanny, or with a friend. It is important for a child to have confidence, a sense of constancy and not be afraid that a significant adult may disappear. It is important that the child knows when the mother leaves for work and returns from it. Irregular meetings increase anxiety. nine0003

Separation anxiety goes away on its own? Does she need to be treated?

If a parent is sensitive to the child, recognizes his emotions, helps to survive his feelings, treats everything calmly, does not get angry, does not deny – the anxiety goes away by itself. As a result, a person gradually learns to let go of something, to let something new into his life. It’s sad to say goodbye, but everyone has to go through it and move on. It is good when this happens without damage to the psyche.

    Photo: Shutterstock / Daria Chichkareva

It is worth contacting a specialist if sleep problems begin: for example, a child does not get enough sleep because he runs to his parents in the bedroom all night. In this case, the somnologist can suggest bedtime algorithms that reduce anxiety. Often, help in such situations is needed not only by the child, but also by the parent, because for some reason it is the parent who cannot act as a container of this anxiety: he does not have enough emotional strength. A psychologist is especially relevant for parents of preschool children: it is important for them to find the strength to process their fears and anxiety and help with this child. nine0003

Children who have never been able to get used to the emotions associated with parting may have difficulty with parting in the future: with places, activities, people. There are people who literally can’t finish anything. If you study the situation, it often turns out that the moment of completion is simply too terrible for them. It is very difficult for such people to end and start relationships, training. All this happens because the experience of parting with a parent was not experienced very competently. Parents did not help to get used to the feeling “when someone comes and goes – this is normal. ” nine0003

And if it is difficult for a child to part with things

This is also a form of separation anxiety. For a child, toys are, in a sense, an emotional piece of himself, so when this piece disappears, children become unpleasant. Any separation is hard to perceive at first, whether it is a move or a lost thing. That is why children on vacation often do not behave very well. They had to temporarily endure parting with something they were used to.

How to help your child cope with separation anxiety

    • Be predictable and give your child a sense of stability. He must understand when you will return and when you will leave. So he can prepare for this process.
    • Recognize the child’s emotions. Do not get angry, do not be nervous when the child cries at parting. React calmly to this: this is normal and not at all ashamed.
    • Learn to deal with your own anxiety. If a mother has learned to do this, she will not say goodbye for half an hour, and then return to the child, canceling all cases if he burst into tears. If the mother cannot cope with her anxiety, how will she help the child? nine0059
    • Say goodbye simply and quickly: kissed, waved to each other and parted. It is good if the child knows the substitute adult, often spends time with him: this way he will be more comfortable. It is doubly great if this adult knows how to calm the child and switch his attention.
    • When leaving, do not wait until the child stops crying: this only delays the moment of farewell and increases anxiety.
    • Make a to-do list with your child during your absence. If the children know what they will be doing while their mother is not at home, they feel much calmer. You can literally say: “While I am gone, you will watch a cartoon and eat. And by that time I will be back.” This is especially important for the first breakups. nine0059

At what age can you take a child to a children’s theater?

Studies of modern child psychotherapists have shown that it is quite possible to take kids to the children’s theater from 2. 5 to 3 years of age, or even from a very early age, from one to one and a half years.

When a child grows up, he may not remember what happened to him at the age of one, but inside, in the subconscious, that early childhood experience of meeting the beautiful certainly leaves its positive imprint and influences the development of the child. nine0003

But in order to open the world of the theater to a child, it is necessary to make the right choice of a children’s performance and prepare the child mentally.

It makes no sense to bring children under 4 years old to a traditional theatre, where there is a large audience, noise and a long performance. Your child may be frightened and overtired. And then the word “theater” for a long time, and maybe forever, will become something frightening for him!

The performance for the little ones should last 20-30, maximum 40 minutes. The plot should be simple enough and understandable to children of this age. Usually, from the age of 2. 5, children begin to observe the action on stage with great interest and are quite capable of understanding the development of events. nine0003

And so, you have chosen a theater and a suitable play. Now parents need to prepare the baby. Tell how everything works in the theater, explain how people behave in the theater.

Be sure to read a fairy tale to your child, show pictures or tell in your own words a story that he will see in a children’s theater. Try to arrange a home puppet theater for your child yourself, play out his favorite fairy tale in front of him.

Did the child like it? Now you can safely go on a cultural trip to a real theater and introduce children to the beautiful! nine0003

If you take the time and effort to prepare, then leisure time in the theater will turn into a real joy, both for the child and for you!

And now let’s see what moms and dads write about their experience of going to the theater with their children in blogs for parents:

    Sergey:
“We took our son to the puppet theater for the first time when he was 2. 5 years old. He is a very lively and active child, from time to time he got up and talked to me, but he clearly liked the performance. Since then, we regularly go with him to the theater, the circus and the planetarium. It seems to me that such events have a very positive effect on his upbringing. His horizons and vocabulary are expanding, there is a clear leap in development. nine0102

    Marina:
“My son was not used to being in crowded places and without any preparation at the age of two he went to the New Year tree – he got so scared that I had to pick him up crying from the performance and take him home. So it all depends on your child: if he is not afraid of strangers, loud music, then I think that at the age of 2.5 years you can safely go to the performance.”

    Olesya:
“We took our son to the puppet theater for the first time when he was 3 years old. The child had a lot of impressions! The performance was not very long – 35 minutes. There was no fear and no negative attitude! Perhaps this is also because in the son’s garden, the teachers often made small performances for the holidays, and the puppet artists often “toured” around the gardens with mini-performances. Therefore, for him there was nothing terrible in visiting the theater. On the contrary, he talked about it for a long time, was delighted and asked to go to the theater again!” nine0102

    George:
“For the first time we took our son and daughter (twins) to the children’s theater to see the New Year’s fairy tale, at the age of 2.5 years. The children were prepared, their mother and grandmother worked a lot with them. They all really, really liked it! And now, at the age of 7, they are happy to go to serious performances for school-age children.”

    Elena:
“I brought two kids at once, 2.5 and 1.5 years old, to the Fanny Bell House Theater for the performance “The Tsokotukha Fly”
My eldest son was delighted! And the baby first sat in his arms and looked, and then quietly fell asleep. The elder has a great theatrical and book experience. He reacts vividly to the action taking place and laughs in funny places from the age of 2. ” nine0102

    Katya:
“All the kids are different, since a year and a half we have been taking ours everywhere, both theaters and circuses, Durov’s Corner, Christmas trees and everywhere she really liked it, she never got tired and did not whine. So, it all depends on how sociable your baby is, ours is very sociable.”

So let’s conclude. It turns out that it is impossible to determine exactly at what age a child can attend the theater. This is always very individual and depends on many factors. From the degree of preparedness of the child for cultural trips, the level of development of his sociability and emancipation, the general cultural level of the environment and family.
    nine0003

According to the experience and observations of children at performances in the Fanny Bell House theater, we recommend starting a visit to the children’s theater from the age of 2.5 to the performances of Tsokotuha the Fly and Moydodyr. But this is the lower age limit. Such performances will also be interesting for children 3, 4, 5 and 6 years old! Even eight-year-old boys laughed at the adventures of the Kid and Moidodyr!

Performances “Kriktor” and “Tales of the Purple Glade” for children from 3 to 10 years old.

Image shared by @porshiaherhandez

Having a baby is an exciting time for couples. It’s also laced with uncertainty and can be a little terrifying. Moms tend to get all the attention, especially during the baby shower.

However, more couples today are opting for a coed baby shower, which means it’s an excellent time to get the new dad a few cool baby shower gifts. If the dad-to-be happens to be living that single dad life, you could even throw him his very own daddy baby shower!

What is a Daddy Baby Shower?

It’s not much different than a baby shower for mom, except minus the oohs and ahhs and mushy stuff. Think food, beer, baby gear and you’re on the right track.

What Should You Get an Expectant Dad?

There are lots of things a dad-to-be will need once the new baby arrives – and diapers are only the start of it. Gift getting really isn’t that different than what you would get for a new mom except dads gifts will probably look more manly depending on what it is. You can also get dad cool gifts that maybe aren’t specifically for the baby, but are just for him. Keep reading for some dad gift inspo!

A Dude Diaper Bag

There are a variety of styles to choose from. Many dads like backpack diaper bags because they tend to look sporty and allow them to keep their hands free for other things, like diaper changing. This is an essential item of baby gear for dads! Preppier dads might prefer a gender neutral diaper bag tote or messenger-style diaper bags they can loop over their shoulder. Dad’s diaper bag doesn’t need to be overly large because most men only want to carry around the essentials for diaper duty anyway.

A Functional Baby Carrier

Dads like to be able to move around freely. A backpack baby carrier or tactical baby carrier is a practical gift that will allow him to do exactly that, while still soothing and bonding with the baby. Baby carriers are great for hiking, quick jaunts to the store, and to get things done around the house—like additional baby proofing or tasks on the honey-do list.

A Dad Book—Or Three

Babies don’t come with instructions, unfortunately. However, there are several books out there that can help a new dad gain some valuable parenting insight, or even provide practical how-tos, such as how to burp a baby effectively, or how to change a diaper. You know your dad-to-be best, so get him books you think he will find helpful. If the baby hasn’t yet arrived, you could get him books that help him understand what to expect during labor, delivery, and beyond. If he doesn’t like to read, there are also pregnancy apps for dads that he can access right on his smartphone!

Funny Dad Gifts

Maybe it’s a funny t-shirt, or a coffee mug with a funny caption. You could even get him a “Daddy and Me” matching outfit that he and the newborn baby can wear home from the hospital together, or wear on their first night home. Or try getting him a set of custom scrubs to wear during labor and delivery so he’s comfy and can be the support system mom needs him to be.

Daddy-to-Be Survival Kit

You can get one ready-made or make your own, but daddy-to-be survival kits are chock full of things an expectant dad might need while in the hospital waiting for the baby to arrive, and things he may need the first few nights home. Some ideas to include are:

  • Headache meds
  • Snacks for a long night; nuts, beef jerky, trail mix
  • A book to read and tunes to listen to
  • Coffee or his favorite energy drink
  • Vitamins—he’ll need them for strength
  • Ear plugs for after the baby arrives
  • Wet wipes to keep his hands clean
  • A fresh t-shirt because it’s a given— the baby will pee on him
  • A bottle or two of his favorite beer

Other essential kits you can get for dad are a child proofing kit, with everything necessary to childproof a home, and a tool kit, with the tools needed to put together all the new baby furniture.

A Daddy-Doodie Apron

You can make one of these yourself, have one made, or maybe even find one ready to rock. It’s an apron that dad can wear while performing his daddy “doodies,” like diaper changes and feedings. Get one with plenty of pockets and you can add in all the essentials, like spit rags, bibs, a clean onesie, spare diapers, diaper cream, wipes, and Hand Sanitizer.

Subscription or Gift Card for Movies and TV

Feeding and rocking the baby at night is a great time for dad to watch some good movies or get caught up on a few of his favorite shows. A 6 month subscription to services like Netflix or Hulu is a fun way to show some daddy love that’s just for him.

There are so many fun and unique baby shower gift ideas for expecting dads that are perfect for making him feel seen and included during the baby shower: checkout our collection of new dad gifts to find more!.

42 Fun Baby Shower Games That Everyone Will Love

If you love a baby shower and celebrating your favorite moms-to-be, but the thought of playing a baby shower game makes you cringe, you’re not alone. Even the happiest of guests might look for the door when the game prompts come out.

While trying to think of shower games for guests, keep in mind the length of the party, and be sure to leave time for eating and presents.

Choosing the right baby shower games and choosing when to fold those games is all about knowing your guests, said Jeannette Tavares, Creative Director at Evoke Design & Creative.

“Knowing your group will help you decide which games to pick, but don’t over-program the event,” she said. “When the host realizes the game isn’t sticking, the best way to get out of it is to make a joke and call it quits. Just like parenthood, go with the flow.”

With that in mind, it’s time to scrap the old games we’ve all played too many times — measure the pregnant woman’s belly, we’re looking at you — and try out a few new baby shower games.

42 baby shower games

These 42 baby shower games and activities will have the parent-to-be and the guests excited for game time by moving, thinking and guessing.

Diaper Relay

Divide guests into teams with an even amount of participants on each team. Assign each team a baby doll. Each team member will go down the line wiping, diapering and clothing the baby doll before the next team member starts. The first team to have each member finish, wins!

Dad Jokes

A classic dad joke is always good for a giggle or an eye roll. Plus, it makes a great baby shower game. Start by listing a few dad jokes and have everyone try to guess the corny punchlines.

Emoji Nursery Rhyme

Replace the titles of popular nursery rhymes with emojis and see if guests can crack the code. For a few bonus points, turn popular children’s books into emojis.

Name That Tune

Create the ultimate baby shower playlist with songs that contain the word “baby.” As the music plays in the background, have guests jot down the titles. At the end of the party, the person who has the most titles is the winner. From Baby Love to Hit Me Baby One More Time, you’ll have plenty of tunes to choose from.

Are You My Mother?

From cats and kittens, cows and calves, to platypuses and puggles, create a list of animals and their baby’s names for a fun and sweet matching game.

Pacifier Hunt

Before the party starts, hide a few pacifiers throughout the party venue. Tell guests to be on the lookout because if they find a hidden pacifier, they’ll win a prize.

Blindfolded Diaper Change

Divide guests into teams and hand over a baby doll, diapers, and a blindfold. In a relay style, have the teams diaper the doll while blindfolded.

Late Night Diaper Notes

Late night diaper blowouts are inevitable, but you can help the new parents laugh it off by having party guests write funny notes on the outside of diapers with permanent markers. “Houston, we have a problem” or “To pee or not to pee” are a few of our favorites.

Baby Sock Sort

Fill a small basket with different colored baby socks. Time guests as they race to match the tiny socks.

Diaper Stacker

This one works just like Jenga but with diapers. Set up a stack of diapers and see how many diapers guests can pull from the stack before it falls.

Build a Library

Ask everyone to bring a copy of their favorite children’s book. During the shower, give each guest a note card to write why they love that book or a special memory they have of reading that book to their own children. Tape the messages inside the books for a sweet keepsake for the baby.

Bow Building

Let guests get crafty at a hair bow or bow tie building station. Line up different sized elastic headbands, bows, or fake flowers and have guests use fabric glue to make adorable accessories for the baby.

What’s On Your Phone?

Give the old party game What’s in Your Bag? a fun upgrade with cell phones. From apps, photos, alarms, and even battery power, give each item a point value to find a winner.

Mom Brain

Place an assortment of baby items on a tray and have the mom-to-be carry it to each table at the party. Guests have 30 seconds to jot down everything they see. Next remove or swap out the items and see if eagle eyed guests notice.

Baby Bucket List

Give everyone a notecard and have them write down a bucket list item for the new parents to do during the first year of their baby’s life. Places to go, things to do, and experiences to take advantage of during that precious first year.

Guess Who

Share a few funny stories about the parents-to-be and let guests vote on who they think the story is about. Guests get two signs, one for each parent, and will use the signs when they vote.

Baby Face

Fathers and sons. How single adoptive fathers live

Anatoly Efremovich Novoseltsev from Ryazan’s “Office Romance” is the only replicated image of a single father. At the time of the filming of the film, a single father, perhaps, was an exception. Today in Russia, according to Rosstat, there are 650,000 single fathers. Most single dads are in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar Territory, Tatarstan, Sverdlovsk and Nizhny Novgorod regions.

Who is he, a man who manages to work, braid, cook borscht, wash the floor, check “homework”, treat bronchitis, make repairs, and so on? The hero of a fantasy novel? Adoptive fathers with many children Ruslan Khabibullin, Anton Rubin and Svyatoslav Chever spoke about how single fathers live. nine0003

Ruslan Khabibullin

Ruslan from Moscow region

Ruslan Khabibullin has four children. Two of them are adopted. Adoptive parenthood was a decision that they made together with their wife Lilia.

– But I did not come to this decision right away, – Ruslan admits. – When Lilya offered to take the children from the hospital, it came as a shock to me. What for? We also have a child. I resisted for a long time. But one day I was in a traffic jam and the host of the “So far, everyone is at home” program on the radio was talking about how he arranges children from orphanages to families. He spoke so interestingly that I wanted to read about this topic. I began to study and realized that I was ready for this responsibility. And my wife and I went to the school of foster parents, although at that time it was not necessary, but we really wanted to understand as much as possible about foster parenting. nine0003

Ward offered the couple little Veronica, who was almost a year old. Seeing her in the hospital, they immediately began to draw up documents. After some time, the wife was sent a questionnaire of three-year-old Daniel from Voskresensk.

– We arrived, he immediately called us dad-mom. It was an incredibly beautiful, very sunny boy. Now, when I study psychology and communicate in the papal group, I understand that we were lucky – these were children without broken attachment. Both children at the time of our appearance in their lives managed to live in a family. The girl was taken to the hospital from the family, and Danya was taken care of by a loving grandmother. She had no documents for the child and Danya was taken to a boarding school. True, guardianship for some reason made up a story for us that Danya was found in the store, his mother left him and refused. nine0003

Grandmother found her beloved grandson three months after the adoption. The spouses were tormented by the fear of losing the child, but, after conferring, they courageously called their grandmother, who was beside herself with happiness. Danya remained in the family, and they still communicate with their beloved grandmother.

And then disaster struck. Beloved Lilya, wife, mother of four children died. The eldest was nine years old and the youngest was three years old. And Ruslan was left alone.

When a man stays with children, sympathizers sympathetically hint that with so many children it would be nice to have a new mother. Many men do this. But listening to Ruslan, who talks so calmly about the events of five years ago, I understand that he had no idea to save himself from the grief he loved. nine0003

– I was very worried about the fact that the children did not have a mother, – says Ruslan. – Fear, feelings. Now I understand that this is about the same as being left without a good dad. A good dad is no less a resource than a good mom. If dad is passionate about children, this is also a great resource. But before this fear, everyday life fell upon me – I did not know where the things and documents were.

The first year Ruslan was helped by his mother. To keep up with everything, he had to change jobs. The salary was less, but the flexible schedule allowed me to keep up with everything. Finances became another problem. nine0003

– Left without a wife, I became less successful in this matter. I was entitled to 15 thousand each for adopted children, plus a pension for blood children due to the death of my wife. I can’t say that we are chic, but you can live.

Ruslan dealt with domestic issues rather quickly.

– When I discovered such a life hack as the distribution of responsibilities, life became easier, – says Ruslan. – We have a list hanging on the refrigerator – who is responsible for what. One cleans up, the other walks the dog, the third cooks, the fourth washes the dishes. Every six months we change duties. If someone has not done his job, then he will do what is not included in his duties. Previously, I took away the phone for what was not done, but over time I realized that it was not necessary to do this. The telephone today is a part of life, but if it is a punishment, then it can be an encouragement and will attract even more. nine0003

This parental literacy was not given to Ruslan at once. Having solved everyday issues, he realized that it was necessary to solve the main problem – how to raise children.

– It seemed to me that something was wrong with them, – says Ruslan. They don’t listen, they play around. I understood, or I will go crazy, swearing and punishing them, or something needs to be done.

And the father of many children went to a psychologist to correct his children. But the psychologist corrected his attitude to life. And he felt better.

– I learned to punish less often and negotiate more often, – says Ruslan. – This is surprising, but it seems to me that single parenthood is easier for a man. We are less emotional. When I watch single women, it seems to me that it is much more difficult for them. Of course, there are vivid examples of successful single mothers with many children. But a man is still much easier. I can’t say that I’m suffering from life. Once we raised children together with my wife. But her departure did not lessen my responsibility for our joint cause. And I realized that this is my resource. This is a reason not to give up and move on. I even found my further development in this – psychology. I looked at my life and myself differently. nine0003

Ruslan graduated as a psychologist and now conducts consultations himself. In addition, he has found something to do for the soul – he is going to take courses in parental mentoring to help other foster parents.

I ask him what educational discoveries he made during his lonely fatherhood.

– There is such an attitude that children should go in for sports, study for “five”, – says Ruslan. – They don’t get A’s from me and I’m calm. They must want something. Go in for sports, study for five. Get somewhere. It should be their choice. During the pandemic, Danya fell into two for me. When online studies began, he realized that we were sitting at home and relaxing. I was called to school. Failures in all subjects. Before going to school, I warned Danya – most likely you will be left for the second year, but if you want, we will agree that you pass all the tails, but it will be your job. This is your responsibility. I don’t sit with the kids for lessons. If they ask for help, I will definitely help. But they must understand that study is their area of responsibility. nine0003

I ask Ruslan if he knows the answer to the question – how can a single father raise his daughter.

– I can not say that I understood this issue. Our relationship is very warm. She is gentle, soft, loves to cuddle or just sit next to her. I love it. But sometimes I realize that somehow I know little about her. Now she is 10 years old, she began to share less with me. But in general, when something bothers her, she turns to me. It’s not easy for me, but it’s not hard either. It’s easier with boys though. Maybe I give her more tenderness. Although my boys are also tactile. With the eldest, who is already 15, we recently stopped hugging. Although last summer they walked in an embrace. It embarrassed me a little – an adult son hugs in public, but I understood that these are my settings, and since he hugs, then this is normal. nine0003

– Formulate the main rule for the parent.

– Be happy, says Ruslan. Parents often make raising their children their goal in life. And then they present the child with an account-reproach: I raised you, devoted my whole life to you, and you! But you yourself chose this path, why do you reproach the child? Help, support the children in any way you can. But most importantly, be happy, then the children will be resourceful. Don’t carry parenthood like a flag. Parents should have their own interests and hobbies. I have it all. And I never think of myself that I’m a single cool dad. I am a normal dad and a happy person. nine0003

Svyatoslav Chever

Svyatoslav from Moscow

Svyatoslav Chever from Moscow is the foster father of five children. A year ago, Svyatoslav went through a divorce. Now he is raising three sons, two more children remained with his ex-wife. Soon a fourth boy with a special story will appear in Svyatoslav’s family. The guy was taken under guardianship by a single woman. After some time, she was diagnosed with cancer. The foster mother found strength in herself and asked to find a new family for the 17-year-old boy. This family turned out to be the family of Svyatoslav. nine0003

Svyatoslav came to foster parenthood gradually. He worked in children’s summer camps, volunteered in orphanages. This experience allowed him to make some discoveries.

– Orphanages can be filled with gifts, you can create cool living conditions for children, but the family is the most precious story for a child, – says Svyatoslav. “That is why our children so often remember and dearly love their alcoholic parents. These are the most precious people for them. After all, the most talented teacher comes to the orphanage to work, and then goes to the family. nine0003

Svyatoslav made another discovery while working at the 2014 Olympics.

– There I saw volunteers, young guys with burning eyes, who could not eat, not sleep and do very cool things, – says Svyatoslav. – The fact that the Olympics went so well, including their great merit. And I saw their peers, children from orphanages. The maximum of their dreams is that I will become a welder if I am lucky. Or a chef.

Svyatoslav was perplexed – how can youth talk like that, before which the whole world is open? After all, he can become anyone – fly to Mars, become a brilliant surgeon, actor, programmer, but you never know who. nine0003

– I realized that no system can change this hopelessness, you need to take a child and reformat him, – Svyatoslav shares. – And this upgrade takes years. Children who came to me at the age of 12, only after three years began to understand something. And imagine what happens to children who have a short period of residence in the family? Well, yes, they think, I lived a beautiful life, but all this is not about me, I will still be a welder.

These reflections brought him closer and closer to foster parenthood. Svyatoslav studied at the School of a foster parent. There was little left before the decisive step, but fate slightly corrected his plans. Svyatoslav fell in love with a single foster mother. And here his volunteer lifestyle played an important role. At one of the forums, the future wife asked for help (the handle on the door broke, who can fix it?) and Svyatoslav went to repair the handle. From one end of Moscow to the other. nine0003

– Women usually sit on the forums, this post-request had a bunch of likes and reposts, the ladies wrote “you are a cool single mother with adopted children”, but not a single one sent her husband to help, – Svyatoslav ironically. – And I went. Fixed it. While drinking tea, it turned out that we have a lot of points of contact.

Being in love always makes one admire each other.

– And we also went through this, – admits Svyatoslav. – We talked with each other about how much we do for children, I admired my future wife – “how cool you are, you did everything I dreamed of …”. And at first it brought us very close, and then it destroyed us. And if at first we saw only the positive in each other, then later we saw the negative as well. nine0003

The focus on children also played a role. The wife’s children became the children of Svyatoslav, together they adopted another child. The couple were so absorbed in children that they did not find time for each other. At some point, they even stopped noticing each other.

– The most difficult thing in our family life was to find a balance, – says Svyatoslav. – We worked in different schedules. In the morning the children went to school and I did not see them, in the evening I came when they were already asleep. We could talk when the children were already asleep. But on weekends we always tried to go somewhere together. Now we have a joint dinner without fail. nine0003

The last destructive straw was the professionalism of the spouses. He is a specialist in international relations and conflictology, she is a psychologist.

– Two professionals in one team turned out to be a difficult test, – says Svyatoslav. – We constantly said to each other – you do everything wrong, you need to do it differently. In theory, everything was fine with us – they knew the reasons for their mistakes and understood where everything was heading. Proper motivation is very important in a relationship. Everything you do, you do not do it to save someone. And not because you are both great craftsmen and you definitely need to build something together. You are only doing this because you love each other. Any other motivation will inevitably lead to the question – why are we together at all? nine0003

Svyatoslav, like many responsible foster parents, leads webinars and helps young foster parents. He says listeners are often fascinated and inspired by the fact that a parent can handle everything alone. But this path should be the exception to the rule.

– We must do our best to maintain relations between wife and husband, – Svyatoslav is convinced. – A man and a woman in the family is a very cool addition, but they must be focused on each other. Otherwise the boat will not float. nine0003

Another observation that Svyatoslav made during his public work: married couples who live under the illusion that children can become a magical medicine and help save spoiled relationships.

– First you need to fix the boat – relationships with each other and only then set sail, – Svyatoslav is convinced. – If there are any problems, it is dangerous for the family to assume that children will strengthen the marriage. If you have a great relationship with each other, the children see it, it contributes to their understanding of a strong family, and if it is the other way around, they will feel unhappy. nine0003

Svyatoslav, like a true knight, speaks of his ex-wife with great respect.

– I know that it is very difficult for my wife now, sometimes it is very difficult for me, because I am alone, – says Svyatoslav. – We tried our best to save our marriage, but the divorce did happen.

When the divorce happened, three children stayed with Svyatoslav. Two are with mom.

– For the first few days I was in ecstasy – “to bite”, I can do anything! Svyatoslav laughs. – On the third day, I realized that if I spend one more day in the kitchen, I will simply die, – Svyatoslav laughs. – I just finished cooking dinner, and I have to cook dinner already?! Well no. Here is the duty schedule, let’s take turns. I sent recipes to the children, one cooked borscht, the second pasta in the Navy, but before that they had to go to the store with a certain amount and buy groceries. And recently, as a family, we got hooked on a service that brings a set of products and a recipe. Now dinner with us is like dinner in a restaurant, and with the help of such home cooking courses, children feel like real chefs. nine0003

Issues of order It was very difficult to keep order, my wife and I were thinking about how to organize our life. “Chur, not me,” said the boys. Now I have divided the whole house into zones, each is responsible for his own zone. The guys try not to let each other down and not make a mess on someone else’s territory. Svyatoslav liked the idea of responsibility for his territory so much that he delegated other powers to the guys. For example, large purchases and entertainment are consistent with the eldest 17-year-old son Roman. He is the family’s financial director. nine0003

– When the brothers come to him with their “wants”, Roma says – no, we do not need it, and we began to save a lot of money, – Svyatoslav laughs. – The middle son acts as an administrator, keeps track of whether the powder or shampoo has run out. The third is responsible for the products – if milk or fruit is over, he tells you what to buy. This is how they feel responsible.

Svyatoslav’s lessons are also in order. The modern school presupposes not only the presence of tutors, but also selfless parental work. Svyatoslav also had to work hard. Two years ago, the school recommended that the youngest son switch to a lightweight program

– The guy did not pull at all, – Svyatoslav recalls. – We sat with “homework” until one in the morning, because everything he did himself had to be redone. Now, finishing the sixth grade, he is ahead of the curve and even became a math tutor for some of his classmates. He fell in love with history and became the best student in the class, although he whined that he was not interested. But history is my specialty, I tried to tell him in such a way that

The father of many children would understand the most disturbing mother’s issue – endless childhood illnesses. nine0003

– When your mother treats you, you are wrapped in love, you have a scarf, you are wrapped in love, – Svyatoslav jokes. – When dad treats, dad gave a pill, said that the temperature should subside and that in general I have to go to school tomorrow. With such a campaign, getting sick is boring and uninteresting.

In fact, Svyatoslav is a proponent of active prevention. Fruits, exercise, outdoor walks, a weekend at the skating rink – this is the recipe for his family’s health.

– What is the main thing in the relationship between mom and dad? nine0003

– Love, – Svyatoslav replies without hesitation. – Love is always a choice of the good of another. When you are ready to sacrifice something for the sake of another, when there is a mutual feeling – this works very cool. If you wish, you can find pluses in loneliness, for example, now I alone make a decision and this simplifies some points. But to be honest, if she was around, it would be great.

Anton Rubin

Anton from Samara

Anton Rubin from Samara has four children, two of them are adults. Anton is an enthusiast, a volunteer, a person who cares. His parenthood was a desperate attempt to fight indifference and bureaucracy.

– There was no desire to become a foster parent, everything happened unexpectedly for himself, – says Anton.

By profession, Anton is an IT specialist, by way of life he is a volunteer, head of the regional volunteer organization “House of Childhood”, which works with orphans and graduates of orphanages. He met his children 10 years ago. nine0003

– Three older boys are brothers, pupils of the Samara orphanage, where we came with various developmental events, – says Anton. – I did not single them out from other children until the brothers were divided into different orphanages, and then it turned out that they have a sister.

And Anton decided to arrange meetings for them so that the children could communicate with each other.

Later, the volunteer found out that the specialist in charge of orphanages divided the children according to a formal basis – they had different surnames (parents got divorced and remarried, changed surnames). The curator did not bother to read the personal file to the end, to the page where all family members were listed. She promised to correct the mistake. And the brothers were sent to one orphanage. 200 km from Samara. in Syzran. nine0003

– I went to visit the guys and discovered that they were legally transferred to the same orphanage, – says Anton. – But this orphanage has two buildings, they are located at different ends of Syzran, 10 km from each other and, of course, children cannot see each other.

Anton told about how negligent adults manage orphans’ lives in his blog. There were many stories. One of the shelters with disabled children protected the pupils from unnecessary visitors so much that potential parents had to be brought in under the guise of volunteers who arrange holidays for children. nine0003

– People saw children not from ugly database photos, but live, and they understood that “there’s nothing to worry about, a cool child, I’ll take him away,” says Anton. And they started taking the kids. The director of this house does not hesitate to tell us – do you want to leave me without a job? And they stopped letting us in.

In another shelter, a 14-year-old orphanage gave birth to a child, the shelter asked volunteers to find an experienced volunteer mother who would teach the young mother how to care for the baby.

– Our volunteer, an experienced mother, came to the girl and taught, – says Anton. – After some time, the baby fell ill, he was admitted to the hospital, a month later he was discharged with a diagnosis of meningitis. nine0003

Mom-volunteer, visiting her wards, noticed that the baby is very weak – “the lips are blue, the hands are cold, let’s show him to the doctor.” Volunteers asked a professor at the local medical university to see the child. For free. But the leadership of the shelter did not allow it – “you are people from the street, we will not let the child go, he has a scheduled appointment in three weeks.”

– We asked for a caregiver to accompany the child to the appointment, but it was all useless, says Anton. “The baby died two weeks later. The shelter tried to hide it, the girl-mother was locked up, her phone was taken away. nine0003

Anton’s indifference caused the shelters to close the entrance not only to him, but also to his organization. And the meetings that Anton arranged for the separated brothers were in jeopardy. They refused to give Anton another permission to visit them. Having received permission through the court, he realized that this document would be the last pass to the shelter.

– I have no choice but to take the children to the family so that they can be together, – says Anton. – There was no time even to doubt and ponder. It had to be picked up immediately. It was three years ago. Just a month before I made the decision that I was taking the children, I was sure that nothing depended on me. I do everything I can. And when I made a decision, suddenly everything began to depend on me. nine0003

But what about those on whom a lot really depends? The administration of the shelter, and other resource officials? Maybe in order to make a human decision you need to change the laws? Anton is convinced that it is not the laws that need to be changed, but the attitude.

– We have excellent laws, but we need to start working, and not be a function, – says the volunteer. – I am 100% sure that if the shelter workers had a desire to arrange all the children in families, then all would have been arranged long ago. But there is no desire. nine0003

I ask Anton where he got the strength for the endless struggle.

– In children’s tears. When I saw how the youngest son Anton roars when he is separated from his brothers.

– And now?

– And now they give me so much love and gratitude, and this is my strength.

Having made his choice, Anton lost his romantic relationship.

– The girl with whom I lived at the time of registration of the children, unfortunately, considered that she did not need it, – says Anton.

How did the young man feel when he suddenly had four children? Anton had no time to reflect on his emotions. nine0003

– They had to be registered with a polyclinic, assigned to schools and colleges, to understand what their health was like, – lists Anton. – The youngest daughter has epilepsy and mental retardation (MPD), it was necessary to find her a place of study.

And all four had to be dressed and put on shoes for all seasons. Buy school clothes, backpacks, stationery.

– And it was hard, – Anton admits. – I had to taxi in the evenings.

The children were given to the newly-made father almost naked. nine0003

– With “armature” for each, – says Anton. – “Armaturka” is a reinforcement list, which lists the property of the child, which must be returned after you took them from the orphanage, because the property is state-owned. Briefs – 2 pieces, T-shirt – two pieces, jacket – 1 piece, toothbrush – 1 piece, soap dish – 1 piece. That is, I will come to Samara, change the children’s clothes and take my shorts and a toothbrush back for 200 kilometers? I asked – would you seriously give someone a used toothbrush? nine0003

– Who helped you?

– Especially no one, but when I had to go on a business trip, my mother stayed with the children. The first three months were difficult. I worked from eight to five, at the same time I had to undergo a bunch of medical examinations and draw up documents for school. I had to install a Google calendar and write to everyone – what-where-when to do. For example, on Friday it pops up in the calendar – Anton has to be at the clinic at 17.10. She is near the house, Anton is waiting for me at the clinic, I come to register, and at 17.40 I am already going to the commission with Sasha, etc. This was my hack. nine0003

The quest “Get your child in school” was completed by Anton with the help of the Department of Education. But before asking for help, he visited three schools. And everywhere – there are no places.

– As a result, I called the Department of Education, they responded very quickly, – says Anton. – At the school near the house, places were immediately found.

The youngest daughter needed a special school. There are only a few such schools in Samara. The nearest one is seven kilometers from the house. There it turned out that there was no third grade this year and they would not open it for the sake of one child. I had to go back to the second one. nine0003

Anton says that he managed to overcome these endless adventures only because his children are super-conscious.

– They treated the situation with great understanding, that’s the only reason I succeeded, – says Anton.

When school started and all registrations were over, it became a little easier. Against the background of the struggle with people-functions, everyday difficulties do not seem to be a problem for Anton.

– I had to master a lot of different dishes very quickly, – the young father laughs. – To be honest, I’m relaxing in the kitchen. I leave to cook, close the door and say – do not touch me. School was more difficult. There is a very strong difference in the level of education, study was difficult. I had to hire tutors – Russian, mathematics, speech therapist. The first year I did lessons with them every day. There were tantrums, swearing, slamming doors. But the second year was already easier. And now they do almost everything themselves. nine0003

– Why do you need all this?

– Now it’s very easy for me to answer this question – I love my children very much and I can’t live without them, – Anton smiles.

The stories of Ruslan, Svyatoslav and Anton turned out to be stories not about paternal loneliness and admirable heroism. Each of them is a caring and responsible person who, under the circumstances, could not have done otherwise. Their philosophical attitude to life, endurance and endless love for children turned out to be the qualities of a responsible parent, or, as our hero said, “a normal dad.” Therefore, it is not at all difficult for them, like normal mothers, to cook borscht, braid pigtails, work, treat bronchitis, put things in order, check “homework”, and most importantly, just love their children. nine0003

Comment

Armen Popov, author and head of the Adopt. ru portal, director of the Center for the Development of Social Projects:

– The topic of single adoptive dads was a real discovery for me. Young men could devote their lives to something else, a career, for example, than to raise other people’s children alone. But all as one they say – these are not strangers, these are our children. Life throws up surprises. From one of our wonderful hero left the girl he planned to marry. Four children became an unbearable burden for her. I think he was lucky, because she left the ship before the ship sailed, and not while sailing on the high seas. As it was with other heroes, when one day mom gets tired and dad is left alone with the children. Single fatherhood is always difficult and dramatic. The most dramatic story of the loneliness of a foster dad, when for some reason mom dies and dad is left alone with the children. And to his honor and dignity, he does not abandon children and continues this difficult journey alone. nine0003

Single dads don’t ask us for help. But we are trying to impose it on them. Especially for dads who live in the regions. Metropolitan dads find support in the form of parental communities, looking for some life hacks of their own.

We can’t even imagine how difficult life becomes for a single man with children. Finding a rented apartment for them becomes a funny and very sad story, because when a man with four children is looking for an apartment, for society it looks like some kind of nightmare story. nine0003

Another point is the attitude of guardianship authorities towards single dads. Everyone, as one says – thank you for not interfering. This suggests that there is no help for single dads, although a single dad is a serious risk zone, and such families should be especially helped and supported. These dads are usually working. Especially in the regions. Because it is impossible to feed children on regional benefits. But our dads are optimists. They say that they are doing well, they never get sick. My grandfather was a very sickly man, but during the war he neither sneezed nor coughed. The mobilization of the body is such that you have no right to get sick. So are foster dads – they can’t afford it. Our dads manage everything and inspire endless respect. They approach their parenthood consciously – it happened with us, but we are not an example to follow, because for a child, of course, a full-fledged family is important. nine0003

90,000 Nikolai Belousov: Lonely fathers have the same problems as mothers

alone Only a mother will be able to bring up, our compatriots are convinced (35 percent). And only 4 percent of Russians believe that it is better to leave children with their father in a divorce (data from VTsIOM). nine0272

Statistics show that today, in divorce cases, the court more often gives the child to the father. Famous dads really manage to sue children from ex-wives. Is it possible for ordinary fathers to do this? What obstacles do dads overcome in order to defend the right to raise their beloved child? Is it hard being a single parent? Lawyer Lyudmila Aivar, psychologist Tatyana Mizinova and single dad, founder of the first Association of Single Fathers “Mapulechki Moskvy” Nikolay Belousov help to find answers to these questions for “RG”. nine0003

According to sociologists, the main reason that can keep parents from divorce is common children (VTsIOM). But in real life, even this good reason is not always able to prevent the collapse of the family. In most cases, divorce usually ends with the division of children. And then it turns out that the court prefers to give the child, who has the right to mom and dad, to mom. Single dads raising children in Russia are only 1.5 percent, and, for example, in the United States – 15. Why are there so few of us and so many of them? nine0272

Tatyana Mizinova: It seems to me that it’s all about the socio-economic state of society. It is no secret that in terms of living standards both Europe and America have been significantly ahead of our country for many years. And domestic difficulties are the first thing a father faces when he stays with a child. Today, the standard of living in Russia has increased significantly, and the number of fathers who are ready to take full responsibility for upbringing has also increased. It has become more real.

Ludmila Aivar: In America, women still have absolutely equal conditions with men. They work, occupy high positions. It is quite difficult for a woman to get through here, so she is a housewife or some petty clerk. In America, a completely different story, where a woman can achieve much more, because she has a different social status. There is no such negative attitude towards the fact that the child will stay with dad, although big conflicts also arise. But the judicial procedure is different there, the divorce is different. Until the issue of children is resolved, a married couple is not bred, but in our country they are first bred, and then they decide the question of how the children will be. nine0003

Secondly, I agree with Tatyana Vladimirovna, the socio-economic situation is different. We have no desire to change all this – everything suits everyone, men, full-blown flabby alcoholics who have not needed either children or a wife for a hundred years. And the women, in despair, take their children and run away to at least get the children out of this horror. And it turns out that we have much more single mothers than single fathers.

Nikolai Belousov: Yes, we see a lot of men who drink beer every day, return home drunk, and, of course, a normal woman doesn’t like it. A woman wants happiness, love, warmth, so that a sober man would come home, and also bring money, not only smack on the cheek. On the other hand, why should everyone be treated with the same brush? Personally, I know a lot of men who do not drink or smoke, work, take care of children. Why men go down is a separate issue. There are weaker men, when problems appear, they start drinking, they forget and there are no problems. But there is another side. If a man comes home, and they yell at him “leave me alone, take it to eat in the refrigerator” – this is complete disrespect for a man. What a man does is he goes down. Begins to slowly hate his wife, go for walks, etc.

As far as single fatherhood in America is concerned, the reason is that these issues are really handled differently there. Let our guardianship authorities forgive me, but it seems to me that they simply do not fulfill their direct duty here. To whom to give the child, mom or dad is a very difficult question. They should be handled by the guardianship authorities.

It seems to me that trusting our guardianship authorities in this matter is life-threatening. Remember high-profile stories when “conscientious” neighbors complained about prosperous families and children were taken away. nine0272

Nikolai Belousov: At the moment, I completely agree. I know thousands of examples when they interfere with fathers who want to take care of a child. I have seen it in court. Well, how do you like this example? A single father (I know him well), does not drink, does not smoke, takes his son to different sections, takes him on vacation at sea. His wife (I talked to her) is a noisy and hysterical lady, with whom it is generally impossible to agree on something. Well, what do you think? At first, the guardianship authorities took a neutral position, and when we left the courtroom, one of the representatives, not noticing me, suddenly said – “if it were my will, I would never give the peasants children to raise!”. Can you imagine what kind of absentee hatred? But something needs to be changed. In my practice, there are cases when a father was not allowed to see a child for 10 years. We complained to the guardianship authorities, they shrug and that’s it. Abroad, if the father complains that he was not allowed to see the child on a date, the baby is immediately taken away for a while and the parents are forced to agree among themselves. But we need to somehow change, try to take an example from them. nine0003

Do you know how to get divorced spouses to agree?

Nikolai Belousov: If we often have women who do not comply with court decisions, in fact, they mock children and ex-husbands, then why don’t we establish such a practice – the first time they didn’t let them see the child, they fined them, the second time, again a fine, and on the third – selected. Everybody. And there would be peace, love and silence. Children would communicate with mom and dad, and everything would be fine. Do you know how children are given to fathers today? 50 percent of single fathers are widowers. The rest are divorced, “reclaimed” the child or those to whom the wives themselves gave. Those who have achieved the right to raise children are very few today. As a rule, children are transferred to the care of their mother. The reason is banal – firstly, the judges are women, not everyone, of course, does this, but there is. Many of them are very angry with their ex-husbands, hence such female solidarity. nine0003

So it’s more difficult for a father to get a child?

Lyudmila Aivar: Initially, the opinion of our community is as follows: a child can be given to a father only if the mother is bad. And if mom is good and dad is good – why should dad give something? Of course, no one has canceled women judges in our country. But there is still a tendency for men to hand over the upbringing of children. There just aren’t many men who would be willing to take on children. And it is much easier for a woman to do this. But if both parents are in equal conditions, if they are not drug addicts or alcoholics, lead a socially active lifestyle, then, as a rule, priority is given to the mother. Children are given to the fathers only in cases where something is wrong with the mother, if the father, for example, managed to prove that the mother is not completely mentally healthy. nine0003

Nikolai Belousov: Fair judges, like men who want to remain real fathers, still exist. I think if the child is small (a year, two, three), it is still better, it is more correct to leave him with his mother. After all, the ability to care for a child is given to a woman by nature. But by and large, parents should be able to negotiate among themselves. In most cases, unfortunately, the husband and wife not only cannot agree, they simply hate each other. As a result, children suffer. nine0003

Tatyana Mizinova: It seems to me that the court must first of all defend the interests of the child. In most cases, the mother is indeed able to provide more complete care for the child. I mean normal mothers. It must be understood that a mother with a mental disorder or prone to deviant behavior and alcoholism is unlikely to be able to give the child as much as a loving and attentive father. It is very important for the courts to observe objectivity in the interests of the child and not to be led by the stereotypes that “the child belongs to the mother” and should be brought up by her. The main thing that a child should receive is the love and attention of a parental figure, and the one who can give it to him should be engaged in education regardless of gender. nine0003

During your twenty years of helping single fathers, have you managed to understand why parents who once loved each other lose the ability to come to an agreement after many years of living together?

Nikolai Belousov: It’s all because of stupidity, bad manners and ignorance. Smart, educated parents will calmly disperse and give the child the opportunity to communicate with both. After all, anything happens, well, they didn’t agree on the characters. Why make a fuss? Why hold the child? Why, in front of kids, tell friends or girlfriends “oh, what a bastard she (he) is”? nine0003

Interestingly, from a woman’s point of view, is a man’s desire to appropriate a child a real need for paternity or is it a man’s ambition?

Lyudmila Aivar: Situations, of course, are different. At some point, I came across the story of the Baturins, and I can say with confidence that in their case, the ambitions of the parents were in the first place, and not the interests of the children. I’ve noticed the following trends. As a rule, a man who can afford to take his children does not take care of their upbringing in the way that a mother would do. He is busy with business, parties, business trips. In large cities, parents live an active life, they usually use the services of nannies and grandmothers. There are very few fathers who take children from middle-income families to raise them. They take them only because the mother cannot leave the child, otherwise she, an alcoholic, will get drunk, set fire to the house with the children, etc. But for fathers and mothers from the outback, where a calm, measured life, paternal-maternal instinct is more inherent. They really do educate. But in my practice, I very often came across a male character, “I am the owner, as I said, so be it. ” nine0003

Tatiana Mizinova: The decision to take the children home may be the result of irresponsibility, lack of understanding of the consequences. This may be vindictiveness and indifference to children, a sense of superiority and a desire to prove to others that “I’m cool”, which we observed in the case of Mr. Baturin. But these are bad choices. More often than not, fathers who decide to raise a child are strong people who love their children, understand the difficulties they will have to face, and are ready to overcome them. They know the price of love, and a relationship with a child is of infinite value for them, for which they are ready for anything. nine0003

Is it hard being a single parent?

Tatyana Mizinova: I think it’s very difficult. In addition to taking on an unusual role, often men are forced to completely change their entire usual way of life. Hanging out with friends over beer, going to football games or exotic safari trips should be in the child’s best interest. A man moves away from his usual company, but in the circle of mothers he also cannot feel completely comfortable, and women on the playground may feel awkward in the company of such a “girlfriend”. And the situation turns out – “a stranger among his own, a friend among strangers.” Single fathers feel like “white crows”, it is more difficult for them than for single mothers to find support and understanding. Often single fathers have to sacrifice their careers and even their businesses. If initially a man planned to achieve high positions, then it would be very traumatic for him to refuse them. nine0003

Nikolai Belousov: I, as a former single dad, allow myself to disagree with a respected psychologist. I don’t think it matters if you’re a single mom or a single dad. It is not difficult for a parent who truly loves his children. Everything is easy for him. He will wash and cook with love, and he will calmly sacrifice his career. And when a child is a burden, then it is not easy to change the way of life.

Didn’t you have any problems? What do single dads who come to you for help complain about? nine0272

Nikolay Belousov: As a rule, single fathers have no problems, because they are men (laughs). Seriously, the problems of single fathers are the same as those of single mothers: lack of time and money. And if the latter is at least somehow solved, then the former is much more difficult. I had the same issues.

The ideal single father is Novoseltsev from Office Romance? Novoseltsev, apparently, fits into this category. He is caring, worries about children, treats them with love and tenderness, at the same time he is not fixated on them, does not create symbiotic relationships, there is a place in his life It would be a mistake to consider someone who sacrificed his life to children as “ideal”, because later this will fall on the children with a heavy burden of guilt and a desire to be what their father wants to see.0003

Does a single father have a chance to find his other half?

Nikolai Belousov: I still do not lose hope.

Tatyana Mizinova: And you are doing the right thing. There is always a chance. Difficulties arise when a man alone raises a child from infancy. He often closes in on himself and on his problems, he and the child form a kind of “microworld” that lives according to its own laws and is closed from others. A man puts so much effort into raising a child that the appearance of someone (a third) is a threat to such an important and expensive relationship. Single dads become very good husbands who know how to appreciate and share the burden that a woman carries in the family .. But in order to win his heart, you need to sincerely accept and love his child and understand that perhaps the child will always be more important and even more loved. nine0003

key question

What rights do divorced parents have?

Ludmila Aivar, lawyer:

– A father, like a mother, has the right to have a job and not be fired, so that the child eats well. Today, both parents are in absolutely equal conditions both in the Labor Code and in the Tax Code. They receive the same child benefit. The only thing that men do not receive is maternity capital, because he does not give birth to a child. I note that single fathers have a delay in conscription for military service until the child reaches a certain age. But the law is the law, and practice is practice. The actions of the judge are not regulated by law, he is given very broad powers. The decision is at its discretion. And this leads to the fact that judges sometimes make rather ridiculous decisions. Moreover, in these cases it is impossible to prove the correctness with figures, facts and arguments. One side said this, the other that, witnesses came and said something else. It is clear that everyone is lying. And the decision is made on the level of “believe – do not believe” or on the basis of who made the most impression or gave money. nine0003

What should a single father not do?

Tatyana Mizinova, psychologist:

– You shouldn’t try to replace a child’s mother. It is better to take the position of a good father. You should not make a monster out of a mother who has left the family, any child loves her mother at heart, and by talking nasty things about her, you greatly offend the feelings of the child. Try to have women from your family involved in upbringing, girls need to identify with the female role, and boys from childhood should acquire the skills to communicate with the opposite sex. Do not lock yourself in and on the child. nine0003

11 week old baby drooling: Baby Drooling at 2 Months? Here’s What to Know!

Your baby: 11 weeks old

Just beyond their grasp

Your baby has likely been reaching for objects for a few weeks now, and they may soon be able to grab what they’d like—though it’s still more often hit-or-miss at this point. You can help your baby develop their mobility during tummy time by placing favourite objects just beyond their arms’ reach and seeing if your baby can stretch and wiggle to get it.

Efficient eating

You’ll likely find that your breastfed baby is far more efficient at nursing by now, some even taking their fill in just five to 10 minutes, and maybe lasting longer before the next meal. Bottle-fed babies (whether on formula or expressed milk) are also taking bigger meals, and most babies overall are sleeping longer at night before waking up hungry again—though relatively few are actually sleeping through the night, no matter what you may have heard.

Overstimulation

At nearly three months old, your baby delights in stimulation—when you are talking to them, when they’re kicking or batting a toy and when they’re splashing in the bath. But have you spotted overstimulation as well? Babies can be overwhelmed by too much of a good thing, and learning the warning signs can help you figure out when your baby has had enough.

Getting outdoors with your baby

Your baby’s senses are well developed by 11 weeks, which makes a trip outdoors more rewarding than it used to be. There’s so much for your baby to look at and hear as you take a trip to the park or down the street, and they will often show their delight with increasingly coordinated waves and kicks. Your baby can typically lift and turn their head to look around and follow interesting objects with their eyes, heads and even voice, responding to the world around them with coos and screeches.

Your life after baby

Benefits of your postpartum body

Nearly three months after giving birth, you may be lamenting some of the ways that your body refuses to return to its pre-baby state—shall we count the ways? But wait, aren’t there a few things you love about your new body? Whether it’s larger breasts, a butt you’ve always wanted or a hormonal boost that has given you great hair and nails, your new body has some benefits, too.

Body beautiful: Celebrating the postpartum body

Ashlee Wells Jackson

“I had developed this ability to ignore my body from my breasts to my knees, and it just hit me like a ton of bricks: I was buying into the media standards of what bodies should look like—what makes you whole and what makes you worthy. And that’s the day I said, ‘I’m going to change this.'” —Ashlee Wells Jackson, founder of the 4th Trimester Bodies Project and mom of Xavier, Nova and Aurora

  1. Acne. Small red bumps on the face (onset 2-4 weeks).
  2. Drooling or Spit-Up Rash. Rash around the mouth and on the chin (onset anytime).
  3. Erythema Toxicum. Red blotches with small white “pimple” in the center (onset 2-3 days).
  4. Skin Injury from Birth Process. From forceps, scalp electrode or birth canal (present at birth).
  5. Milia. Tiny white bumps on the nose and cheeks (present at birth).
  6. Mongolian Spots. Bluish-green birthmark, often on buttock (present at birth).
  7. Stork Bites (Pink Birthmarks). On back of neck or bridge of nose (present at birth).
  8. Strawberry Hemangiomas. Raised red birthmarks (onset 2-4 weeks).
  9. Port-wine Stains. Dark red or purple flat birthmarks (present at birth).

Newborn Face Rashes: Most Common Ones

  • Erythema Toxicum 50% (onset day 2 or 3)
  • Milia 40% (present at birth)
  • Baby Acne 30% (onset week 2 to 4)
  • Drooling or Spit-up Rash (common and onset any time)
  • Heat Rash (common and onset any time)

Heat Rash

  • Many newborn rashes that have no clear cause are heat rashes.
  • Heat rashes are a pink blotchy area with tiny bumps.
  • They mainly occur on the face, neck and chest.
  • During hot weather, most temporary newborn rashes are heat rashes.
  • Cause: blocked off sweat glands. The openings are so tiny in newborns, that any irritation can block them. Examples are getting any ointment on the skin, friction from clothing or being overheated. Being held against the mother’s skin while nursing causes many face rashes.

Herpes Simplex: Serious Newborn Rash

  • Appearance. Several water blisters or pimples grouped in a cluster. They look like the cold sores (fever blisters) that adults get on their lip. After several days, they crust over.
  • Location. Just one part of the body, usually the scalp or face.
  • Redness. The base can be pink. The pinkness does not extend beyond the cluster of vesicles.
  • Onset. Within the first 2 weeks of life.
  • Importance. Early treatment with anti-viral drugs can prevent serious problems. If you think your newborn’s rash looks like herpes, call your child’s doctor now.
  • Imitator. Although herpes can be confused with erythema toxicum, they look very different.

Care Advice for Newborn Rashes and Birthmarks

  1. Acne:
    • More than 30 percent of newborns develop baby acne of the face. Acne consists of small red bumps.
    • This baby acne begins at 2 to 4 weeks of age. It lasts until 4 to 6 months of age.
    • The cause appears to be the transfer of maternal hormones just prior to birth.
    • Since it goes away on its own, no treatment is needed. Baby oil or ointments make it worse.
  2. Drooling or Spit-up Rash:
    • Many babies have a rash on the chin or cheeks that comes and goes. This is often due to contact with food. It’s more common after starting baby foods. In newborns, it can also be from stomach acid that has been spit up. Prolonged contact with spit-up during sleep can cause the rash to get worse.
    • Other temporary rashes on the face are heat rashes. These can occur in areas held against the mother’s skin during nursing. Heat rashes are more common in the summertime.
    • Rinse the face with water after all feedings or spitting up. During hot weather, change the baby’s position more often. Also, put a cool wet washcloth on the rash. Do this for 10 minutes.
  3. Erythema Toxicum:
    • More than 50 percent of babies get a rash called erythema toxicum. It starts on the second or third day of life.
    • It’s a harmless baby rash that doesn’t need to be seen.
    • The rash is made up red blotches. They are ½ inch to 1 inch (1 to 2.5 cm). The blotches have a small white or yellow “pimple” in the center.
    • They look like insect bites, but are not. Red blotches are the main feature.
    • They can be numerous, keep occurring, and look terrible. They can occur anywhere on the body surface, except the palms and soles.
    • Their cause is unknown, but they are not an infection.
    • They go away by 1-2 weeks of age.
    • No treatment is needed. Ointments or baby oil make it worse.
  4. Skin Injury from Forceps, Scalp Electrode or Birth Canal:
    • The pressure of a forceps on the skin can leave marks. You may see bruises or scrapes anywhere on the head or face.
    • During birth, skin overlying bony prominences can become damaged. You might see this on the sides of the skull bone. This is from pressure from the birth canal. Even without a forceps delivery, you may see bruises or scrapes.
    • Scalp electrodes can also cause scalp scrapes and scabs.
    • The bruises and scrapes will be noted at birth. They will be more noticeable by day 2. They heal over or go away by 1 – 2 weeks of age.
    • A fat tissue injury won’t appear until day 5 to 10. Look for a firm coin-shaped lump. It will be under the skin and sometimes with a scab. This lump may take 3 or 4 weeks to go away.
    • For any breaks in the skin, apply an antibiotic ointment (such as Polysporin). No prescription is needed. Use 3 times per day until healed.
    • Call Your Doctor If:
    • It becomes tender to the touch
    • Becomes soft in the center
    • Starts to looks infected
  5. Milia:
    • Milia are tiny white bumps that occur on the face. The nose and cheeks are most often involved. Milia can also be seen on the forehead and chin.
    • Milia occur in 40 percent of newborn babies. Present at birth.
    • Milia are many in number. They occur equally on both sides of the face.
    • Although they look like pimples, they are much smaller (pinhead size). They are not infected.
    • They do not look like water blisters.
    • They are blocked-off skin pores. They will open up.
    • Milia will go away by 1 to 2 months of age.
    • No treatment is needed. Ointments or creams can make them worse.
  6. Mongolian Spots:
    • A Mongolian spot is a normal bluish-green or bluish-gray flat birthmark. They occur in over 90 percent of Native American, Asian, Hispanic, and African American babies. They are also seen in 10 percent of Caucasians, especially those of Mediterranean descent.
    • They are present at birth.
    • They occur most commonly over the back and buttocks. However, they can be present on any part of the body.
    • They vary greatly in size and shape.
    • They do not indicate illness or any disease.
    • Most fade away by 2 or 3 years of age. A trace may last into adult life.
  7. Stork Bites (Pink Birthmarks):
    • Flat pink birthmarks that occur over the bridge of the nose or the eyelids. You can also find them on the back of the neck (“stork bites”). The ones in front are often referred to as “an angel’s kiss”.
    • They occur in more than 50 percent of newborns. They are present at birth.
    • All the birthmarks on the bridge of the nose and eyelids clear completely. Those on the eyelids clear by 1 year of age. Those on the bridge of the nose may last for a few more years. Those on the forehead from the nose up to the hairline usually last into adulthood. Laser treatment during infancy should be considered. Most birthmarks on the nape of the neck also clear. But, 25 percent can last into adult life.
  8. Strawberry Hemangiomas:
    • Strawberry hemangiomas are red birthmarks that are raised or increasing in size.
    • Onset usually between 2-4 weeks of age. Most often, start after 3 weeks of age. Sometimes (although rare), they don’t appear until the second month of life.
    • They become larger for 1 year. Then, they fade away over 6 to 8 years without any treatment.
    • They run a small risk of bleeding with trauma. Any bleeding should stop with 10 minutes of direct pressure.
    • Discuss with your child’s doctor on the next regular visit. Call sooner if you are concerned.
  9. Port-Wine Stain Birthmarks:
    • Present at birth in 1 out of 200 newborns
    • Deeper in color (dark red or purple) than stork bites (salmon patches)
    • Flat, smooth surface
    • Natural course: Do not fade or disappear like stork bites. May become darker.
    • Grow with the child, but cover the same area
    • Treatment: May refer to dermatologist for laser treatments early in infancy
  10. Call Your Doctor If:
    • Your baby starts to look or act abnormal in any way
    • You think your child needs to be seen

And remember, contact your doctor if your child develops any of the ‘Call Your Doctor’ symptoms.

iPad for young parents / Habr

You can hear a lot about the scope of tablet computers. And that they are, and that we are poor, we used to carry one laptop and a phone with us, and now we also carry a tablet for some reason. At the same time, most agree that lying on the couch or reading the news over morning coffee from such a device is really a pleasure. I personally have already accumulated many areas and reasons for using a tablet, but I want to write a little more about this one. I think it will be more useful. First of all, we will talk about software for iOS – since the experience is just that. Probably something for android too.

So, when you have a baby in your arms, and you, most likely, are his mother, then you will not be able to combine manipulations with him and with a computer at the same time. But one hand is regularly free. The simplest example is during feeding. You can, of course, watch TV in parallel (which, however, distracts the child and annoys), but if you need something on the Internet: read a book or leaf through a magazine, then, as practice shows, a tablet is ideal.
These are questions of convenience and comfort. There is also special software that may well be useful to young parents. It is not so small, but, as usual, there is not much really useful. And also applicable in our realities (software tied to children’s American online shops immediately disappears, for example), even less.

And yet, what turned out to be useful:

Baby-Silencer is a simple free application designed for babies from 3 to 6 months. It draws bright, you can’t call it fractals, patterns and spots on the screen, which the child sees, at 2 months he also sees in practice. And sticks in them. Watching.

Attention grabs for 10-15 minutes, Baby Einstein doesn’t catch on for so long. I don’t know how much it really develops, but it distracts the child from the demand for attention – for sure.

Baby Connect www.baby-connect.com($4.99) More serious app. Available for both iPhone and iPad.
It is, of course, for pedants, but useful to science. In fact, this is tracking of all kinds of activities and passivity of the baby. How much he slept, how much he ate, weight, etc. and so on.

Very well done, has timers, builds graphs, shows dynamics and more. In general, a nice and useful thing if you are really ready to use it and record everything. Helps answer questions from doctors during examinations. (the screenshots are quite clearly visible, worth a look)

Unfortunately, I have not found any more really useful applications for the little ones and their parents. I’ll be glad if you give me some advice.
Closing the topic, I want to say a few words about an indirectly related application.

Calorie Counter ($1.99).
As the name suggests, it is designed to keep track of what and how much you have eaten. It will show the norm both in calories and in vitamins and other substances. Allows you to enter activities (training), and keep track of changes in weight and body volume. Everything is done very well, and I looked at a dozen analogues, from free to quite expensive. This, in my opinion, is definitely the best in a number of criteria. By the way, it looks like it was made by our compatriots, but there are no direct mentions. Among the shortcomings, and noticeable ones, is that the version for iphone personally with the version for ipad does not synchronize well and is buggy through dropbox.
What does it have to do with the topic of the post? Here, in general, it is obvious. After the birth of a child, there is a question of weight loss and bringing the figure back to normal. Yes, and it is very important to monitor nutrition (what was eaten yesterday, that the milk did not go to the baby, as it is with the min. Substances and vitamins in the diet). In general, it may well help and be just as useful.

Last but not least, the iPad does a great job as a light at night. The light is dim, directional. You don’t have to reach far 🙂

Things To Know About Teething Babies

When your
baby is 4 to 7 months old, you will probably begin to see symptoms of teething.
Teething may cause discomfort for your child as they begin to grow their first
set of teeth. Baby teeth can appear anywhere from 3 months old to 12-14 months
old.

The teeth
breaking through the gums can lead to soreness and swelling. As a parent, its
essential that you recognize the symptoms of teething so you can understand the
process, and know whether your child needs additional attention from a
dentist.

When to See a Dentist

You should see a dentist as soon as your child’s first tooth emerges. Dental checkups are very important because dentists can ensure that your baby’s teeth are developing properly. Baby teeth are crucial to your child’s development because they help them chew and speak. They also hold space in the jaws for when the adult teeth come out.

If your baby’s first teeth have emerged, contact Valley Ridge Dental Centre today. Our dentist in NW Calgary is happy to meet your little one and ensure their developing teeth are healthy.

Signs of Teething

You can
expect your baby’s front teeth to appear from 4 to 7 months old. Symptoms of
teething usually arise a few days prior to the tooth becoming visible. Here are
9 important signs that let you know your baby is teething.

1) Appetite Loss

Due to the
soreness they may experience during the teething process, they might be
reluctant to eat. You can combat this symptom by offering them cold foods. Cold
foods can actually provide relief.

2) Biting

Babies that
are teething usually bite on their fingers of toys to relieve the pressure they
may experience on their gums. You should encourage chewing, but ensure that
whatever they are chewing is safe for them.

3) Sucking

Your baby may
also do this to relieve pressure on their gums. Like with chewing, ensure that
whatever they are sucking on is safe for them and there isn’t a risk of
swallowing.

4) Drooling

When babies
begin the teething process, they may start to drool excessively. Because of
this excessive drooling, they may get diarrhea, which can turn into diaper
rash. Wipe the drool when you see it pooling, but use a gentle touch so you
don’t irritate their skin.

5) Mouth Rash

Mouth rash is
caused by excessive drooling. This type of rash can form around your baby’s
mouth, on the chin, or on their chest. If you see them drooling too much,
gently wipe the drool away.

6) Irritability

Irritability
is ultra-common among infants who are teething. Again, this is due to the
soreness they may experience while their teeth are growing. Be patient with
your little one if they are exhibiting signs of irritability.

7) Sleep Problems

Because of
the discomfort teething can cause, they may struggle to sleep properly. Similar
to how adults struggle to fall asleep when they are experiencing pain or
discomfort, babies find it difficult to sleep through the night or take naps
while teething.

8) Pulling of the Ears

This symptom
is odd, but babies also do this to relieve pressure on their gums. They may
also rub their cheeks for the same purpose.

9) Fever

Infants who
are teething can have a heightened body temperature (teething fever). If their
fever is over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, it is most likely not because of
teething and could be a sign of a larger problem. Contact your baby’s
healthcare provider if that is the case.

A lot of
parents don’t know that their baby is teething because the symptoms are similar
to those of a cold. It’s important that you pay close attention to these
specific symptoms so you can tell the difference between the two.

Babies
undergo the teething process at different times, so don’t be surprised if your
child doesn’t begin teething at the anticipated time.

In What Order Will Their Teeth Appear?

Usually, the
first teeth that you will see emerge is the two in the bottom center of their
mouth. After those, you will probably see the two above those. Then, the teeth
emerge outwards from there, beginning with the lateral incisors, followed by
the first molars, then the canines, finishing with the second molars.

Teething Remedies

Since the process
can be a bit uncomfortable for your child, you’ll want to try some of these
home remedies to help ease the soreness they may experience.

  • Chewing. Chewing is the most common way to
help your baby deal with soreness in their gums. Babies already love to chew,
and the act of chewing creates counter-pressure that provides relief from the
pain caused by their new teeth emerging. You can purchase things like rubber
teething rings or other soft toys.
  • Cold drinks and food. Cold water can actually
help with their soreness as well. Another thing you can do is place your
teething toys in the refrigerator so when they chew on them, they get extra
relief. Refrigerated foods like yogurt or applesauce are both appetizing and
effective at lessening your baby’s aching.
  • Don’t use numbing agents. Topical numbing
agents and rubbing alcohol should not be used on your baby. The FDA says that
topical numbing agents can put baby’s at risk of reduced oxygen levels.
  • Medicine. If these home remedies don’t work
for you, you can try giving your child medicine. Children’s Tylenol
(acetaminophen) or ibuprofen can help lessen their symptoms.

reasons why cats drool from their mouths

HEALTH

Share

It is believed that the appearance of drooling in animals, especially dogs, can be a cause for serious concern. The profuse salivation of cats is also worth paying attention to.

As a rule, cats are not famous for profuse salivation, what then is the cause of this phenomenon? Here we will look at the most possible reasons why cats drool and how to solve the problem with saliva.

In most cases, a small amount of saliva in a cat should not be alarming. If, for example, a cat drools when purring, then this is a sure sign that she is relaxed and content. Cat experts say that there is a connection between salivation and euphoria, which originates in the communication of a kitten with its mother when she feeds him milk. This also explains why a cat drools when it crumples a blanket or your knees, because little kittens do the same thing when they crumple their mother’s stomach to stimulate milk production.

Diseases of the mouth and teeth

But there are times when increased salivation in a cat can be a signal that something is wrong with her. A common cause is oral disease or dental caries. Tartar deposits can rub against the inside of a cat’s mouth, resulting in excess saliva production. To test this, you can gently pull back the cat’s lip and look at its teeth. If the teeth are tarnished or brown, or if the gums are bleeding, a visit to the veterinarian should be made as these problems require treatment, including removal of tartar.

Foreign objects

When checking your cat’s teeth, look for anything stuck in her mouth, such as a piece of thread or a small object that may cause discomfort. Some plants, and poisoning from them, can cause profuse salivation, so check to see if your cat has eaten something they shouldn’t have.

Heatstroke

Another cause, especially in hot summers, can be heatstroke. In cats, this is not common, unlike other animals (because cats are very smart), but still, if the cat has been in the sun for several hours without drinking, this can cause profuse salivation. Because heat stroke can be life-threatening, make sure your cat has free access to fresh, cool water, or try to keep your cat in a cool room when it’s hot. Also be aware that signs of heat stroke can include restless behavior, rapid heart rate and breathing, red tongue, vomiting, and lethargy. If you suspect heat stroke, take your cat to the vet as soon as possible.

Nausea and restlessness

Drooling can also be a sign of restlessness or nausea. Nausea, in turn, can signal anything from temporary indigestion to something more dangerous, such as inflammation or bowel cancer. If the cat’s salivation lasts for more than a few minutes or does not stop and is observed regularly, this is definitely a signal to visit the veterinary clinic.

Drooling at 3 months of age

Somewhere after two months of life, the baby begins to drool. Many young and ignorant parents get scared, they think that something bad happened to their little one. At about 3 months, the baby looks with interest and pulls his little hands into his mouth, drooling flows even more often and thicker. More experienced mothers often associate this with teething symptoms.

Baby’s natural protection or why babies drool

Actually, the teeth have nothing to do with it. It is at this age that the salivary glands work especially intensively. Since the baby has not yet learned to swallow saliva, it seems that his saliva flows continuously. Now he explores, considers, tastes everything. And, of course, it needs protection from various infections that lie in wait for it at every turn. This function is performed by saliva, which has antibacterial properties. Teeth usually begin to be cut later (in months 6 – 7).

Other functions of saliva

Saliva moisturizes mucous membranes, contains enzymes that break down starch into sugar, which promotes the absorption of food by the body. Wetting the gums with saliva makes life easier for the baby during the period of teething.

When to worry?

In some cases, increased salivation in infants really should be paid attention to.

  1. With a runny nose, the baby constantly drools and breathes through the mouth.
  2. Drooling profusely due to inflammatory processes in the mouth, as well as during meals, if the baby is choking.
  3. From the point of view of some doctors, the excess flow of saliva is due to the growth of blood vessels.
  4. Excessive salivation may be due to hepatitis, gastritis or enteritis.
  5. If a baby drools during sleep, this often indicates the presence of worms.

How to care for a baby during periods of intense salivation?

Drooling must be wiped off to make the baby feel comfortable. So that the clothes do not get wet, a bib is needed. Lubrication of the area around the mouth with baby cream will prevent painful rashes.

Thus, frequent drooling in a three-month-old baby is usually a natural process. Young mothers need to know this and take this phenomenon calmly.
