    What Parents Say.

    Since the beginning, weʼve focused on providing the best early learning education for all families.

    Woodlands Sunbury is a fantastic daycare. Our son is thriving there, having so much fun along the way and has made loads of friends. All the teachers are just wonderful and provide regular feedback which is very valuable. Highly recommend Woodlands to any parent looking for a safe, nurturing and educational centre for their children.

    Our family have been extremely happy with Woodlands. The staff and management create a wonderful learning environment and our son has thrived there. He developed a love of learning from his teacher and all the educators there. They provide wonderful service and their systems are easy to use and keep parents informed. Highly recommend!

    As a mother of a child who has a rare chromosome deletion, I needed to find a childcare provider who would ensure my daughter was safe and well looked after at all times. The educators and staff at woodlands have done exactly that. My daughter started at woodlands not eating a variety of foods, not speaking many words and just well behind her development. In 7 months shes now eating everything that’s served can speak super well and is hitting her milestones and that’s the work of woodlands and their staff. I couldn’t thank them enough for all their help with my daughter.

    Woodlands and its a great childcare centre. We appreciate the importance they put on education and learning, as well as routine. The staff are all very friendly, and care for our child, and always address our concerns. The facility is new and clean which is important for us. Also their daily price is very reasonable. We highly recommend this childcare for families.

    Would just like to say how much I and my husband and our little man Noah appreciate Woodlands Roxburgh Park Kindergarten!
    for not only their friendly staff but for the very warm welcome Noah had on his very first day till now. We are very happy with Noah’s process through his time at Woodlands. The quality u get at Woodlands is beyond amazing and were very happy with the staff, communication and overall his experience at Woodlands. Noah has grown and learned so much while he has been attending Woodlands Roxburgh Park and made friends with not only the other children but the staff.
    I would highly recommend Woodlands Kindergarten too my friends and family with children.

    • Zhong Meifang, parent of Lucas Lau (N1), Mulberry Learning @ Marymount

      “My boy is happy being taught by Lai Laoshi! I can feel her passion and patience with the kids which is very important. In general, all staff are friendly and helpful. I greatly appreciate that all staff are very detailed with every kid during the daily hygiene check. I am also impressed that all teachers take the effort to remember the kids’ names of other classes.”

    • Regina Chow, parent of Rhapsody Ong (N1), Mulberry Learning @ Jurong East

      “My mind was set on Mulberry Learning the moment I saw how much Rhapsody enjoyed the Reggio Emilia inspired play areas when she was 19 months old. Mulberry’s holistic approach to education is also a huge draw. The daily outdoor sports, weekly waterplay and library visits are just some of the activities that she absolutely loves. I know I made the right choice because 6 months on, she still looks forward to seeing her teachers and friends everyday. Her caring and nurturing teachers always provide timely updates on Rhapsody’s developments. You can tell that everyone in the school, including the principal, is very hands-on and passionate about what they do, and that truly gives me the assurance that Rhapsody is in good hands.

    • Happy Tan, parent of Anastasia Chen (K2), Mulberry Learning @ CCK

      “My daughter had trauma from previous school, where she was scolded by a teacher. Recently, her trauma appeared again and she cried every day going to school. But, teachers Hui Na and Zhang Laoshi are very patient and worked together with us to slowly build my daughter’s confidence again. After one month, we observed vast improvement. Thank you very much for the partnership!”

    • Yomay Lin, parent of Elliot Goh (K1), Mulberry Learning @ Cairnhill

      “Ms Carol is a dedicated vice principal who is very loving and caring towards the children and is receptive towards parents’ feedback. Teachers of the branch are generally caring and attentive to children’s needs.”

    • Chew Chen Li, parent of Hannah Pua (K2) and Daniel Pua (N2), Mulberry Learning @ Alexandra

      “Xu Lao Shi has been working tirelessly through the year to nurture the students under her care. She is very patient, and knows how to handle the children. She also has a good rapport with the children, and you can tell that she really cares for wants the best for the children. I think her attitude and positivity is highly commendable, and it also rubs off the children, who become interested and start to love the Chinese language.”

    • Lim Zi Rong, parent of Erica Lim (N1), Mulberry Learning @ Shenton Way

      “Good mix of programmes for child to develop holistically, teachers put in a lot of hardwork and effort to make this happen. Kudos to the teachers, especially Teacher Vanitah. She cares a lot for the children and showers them with love. She is a teacher who puts in a lot of effort and hardwork into the children’s development and well being, very genuine and exceeds our expectations. With her, our child looks forward to school everyday and we know that she will be well taken care of as she learns and grow everyday.”

    Abandoned kindergarten in the forest [May. 19th, 2014| 03:58 pm ]

    alexdoomer2009

    [ Tags | urbexalexdoomer, Moscow region, kindergarten, abandoned kindergarten, abandoned, winter, forest, institution ]

    On the eve of each New Year, we have a tradition to go on a trip to some interesting place in the Moscow region. It was not without this in 2013, this time we were brought to one closed kindergarten in the forest outside the city. It ceased to function three years ago, but it has been preserved just fine.

    This report in Russian

    On December 28, when there was no snow in Moscow, and there was very little snow in the region, we decided to move out of the city. After a short trip by train and bus, my friend and I were on the spot. Having overcome the order of the fallen fence, we went to one of the closed buildings. And soon they were inside. What is a place? This is a kindergarten, where children were previously taken from Moscow to relax in nature. I think this is a great alternative to stuffy Moscow. However, alas, then something went wrong, funding was reduced, or a shortage of children – and the institution turned out to be closed. However, it was not completely abandoned, but simply sealed and mothballed. Right with empty children’s rooms, toys and cabinets.

    1. One of the most interesting rooms is the children’s playroom. Many toys (cars, balls) and a recreation area with soft chairs have been preserved here.

    2. The next room used to be a sleeping room.

    3. And here we found a piano in good condition.

    4. Everywhere there are children’s chairs, tables, in some places children’s drawings are scattered.

    5. But in general, very clean, everything is neat and even, as if everything was closed just yesterday.

    6. Bathroom.

    7. I liked these toy cars so much that I even wanted to drive them)

    8. But in the west wing we found a cool toy TV with legs. Something new.

    9. Let’s take a walk through the other rooms and see what else we can find here.

    10. Tablets with the heroes of the famous fairy tale.

    11.

    12. By the way, the kindergarten is notable for its expensive wooden window frames!

    13. Interference on the air.

    14. But let’s go outside, it’s rather gloomy here. There are many fallen trees around – the mass death of trees from the typographer beetle.

    15. And from the main facade the building looks like this – traces of repairs and a replaced roof are visible. The hull is almost in excellent condition, it’s a pity that nobody needs it idle.

    16. But the sign on the main gate reminds us of the times of the USSR. Kindergarten Frunze RONO.

    But it’s time for us to go back to Moscow and prepare for the New Year.

    P.S. And for those who want to see my travels and adventures in real time, I suggest adding me to Instagram;)

    I will be very happy to make new friends and readers on LiveJournal! Be friends;)

    Now it will seem strange and incomprehensible: “a kindergarten went to the dacha”, but the generation over 40 remembers these field trips well.

    Most of the metropolitan departmental kindergartens had their dachas outside the city, and with the onset of heat and summer, preschool children left the city and became summer residents.

    The best places were chosen for summer cottages. The dachas of the kindergartens of the tractor and automobile plants were not just anywhere, but in Raubichi, which is very prestigious in modern times. In warm weather, it was allowed to swim, and then – “air baths”, and, lying on the mats, the children listened to fairy tales, poems by Chukovsky, Marshak, Mikhalkov and Barto, swayed measuredly in hammocks, which are now not found in stores. The territory of the dachas was fully prepared for the summer season: sandboxes, slides, carousels and swings, on which one wanted to swing “up to the sky”.

    Summer gardens in nature looked very much like pioneer camps, only the “contingent” was much younger. So the teachers and nannies had much more problems with them. Nothing has passed at all – some 10 years after the Great Patriotic War, and outside the city in picturesque places they took summer cottages for small vacationers. It was necessary to provide for everything: to prepare bedrooms and playrooms, a dining room, a kitchen, outbuildings and premises, a first-aid post, housing for all staff. And also the delivery of products, furniture, bed linen, dishes, toys, and so on, so on and so forth …

    The most amazing thing is that they did and succeeded. It was a tradition to go to summer cottages in the summer.

    At that far from easy time in kindergartens and nurseries, children even changed into their “kindergarten clothes”. For boys – shirts and short pants with a bib and cross straps, for girls – dresses. There was a lot of trouble with dressing up (at that time there were no tights and diapers) – the guys wore stockings. The stockings were held on special elastic bands with fasteners, and the elastic bands were sewn to the “bra” – a short T-shirt. Children were taught to cope with changing clothes on their own, to help each other. And this whole “contingent” with drawstring bags and embroidered on them with a “stalk” the names of small owners, in panama hats and skullcaps (for some reason they were in fashion since pre-war times, and both adults and children wore them in the summer) with nets, poured into a clearing . ..

    Red, yellow, white nets were sold in GUM in the department of children’s toys. Now it’s hard to understand why there were nets, besides, now they are not released as unnecessary. It’s just that in those days there were no computer games and “videos”, there were fewer different kinds of equipment, but even the city was full of butterflies, moths, dragonflies. With nets, everyone “hunted” for a peacock eye, and they treated lemon and white butterflies with black dots at the top of their wings with contempt, saying: “Again this nonsense!” Only now you won’t see this “nonsense” in the city, but it happened that butterflies flew into a trolleybus. And huge dragonflies crackled like helicopters (helicopters are designed in their likeness), thin and graceful, like top models, blue dragonflies flew near the water, and tiny blue moths looked like flower petals raised by the wind.

    At the dacha, there is expanse even on the territory itself. This is where rakes and shovels come in handy. Together with adults, older children also planted currant and gooseberry bushes. There was also a vegetable garden, where the beds were weeded, they learned to distinguish weeds from carrots or dill, and then everyone ran to the beds with strawberries to see if the barrel of the berries turned red. Oh, I wish she had matured! (The story “Turnip” by the children’s writer Nosov is about those very “children’s garden” country gardens). With pleasure, they planted flowers, broke up front gardens and those very flower beds lined obliquely with white brick, without which every yard was once unthinkable, and even more so in school and kindergarten. Educators taught the kids to distinguish between wild herbs and flowers, talked about their healing properties. If you fell – and then all the guys walked with abrasions on their knees – then instead of iodine, you could attach a piece of a plantain leaf, and he, like a bactericidal plaster, stopped the blood and tightened the wound. This is from there, since those childhood times, our generation knows about the properties of yarrow and wormwood (by the way, brooms were made from it and the yard was swept). At the same time there were cleaning and antibacterial treatment.

    And beyond the territory there is a forest, where the kids were picking bouquets of flowers to decorate the rooms and, puffing, bent down and bowed to each berry, picking strawberries and blueberries in mugs. The berries were then eaten for dessert after dinner. They also collected the most beautiful flowers, strawberry twigs with berries, tree leaves, put them between the pages of a school notebook, and on top – a thick press book. Dried flowers and leaves were then carefully sewn with threads into a sketchbook. And they brought home a “herbarium” – a piece of summer, which was pleasing to the eye in winter.

    On Sunday my parents came with bags of sweets: chocolate and “pillows” – the cheapest caramel with marmalade. And what a sweet afternoon nap on the open terraces. So it remained from a distant childhood: mountainous terrain, tall pines, butterflies, dragonflies, bare tanned legs in sandals and lots and lots of sun . ..

    Sasha VARLAMOV, designer

    – Kindergarten was a tragedy for me! I stood at the bars all day, waiting for my parents to come and take me away. I have always been a very domestic child. From trips to the country, there were memories of the sun and a public toilet, dirty and smelling of bleach. And we were also forced to play football – like it or not, play! And in the dining room, comrades spit in compote – they “marked” theirs so that no one would drink. In general, from these memories only goosebumps …

    Natalia MASHEROVA, deputy of the House of Representatives

    – I never went to kindergarten, I spent all my summer holidays at my grandmother’s dacha, by the way, in the president’s homeland. Therefore, I know how to milk a cow and reap with a sickle. I still have a scar on my leg!

    Alexander TIKHANOVYCH, singer

    – I remember very well how I went to kindergarten near the opera house! We were taken “to the dacha” in Zhdanovichi, where there was a camp for a kindergarten and a nursery group. The children were given nets, and we all chased butterflies, it was a lot of fun. I also remember walking in pairs by the handles along the pond and sunbathing, sleeping on cots on the veranda. I slept between two girls. And once I was bitten by a bee, I slapped it right on my arm, and because of the sting, my arm swelled up. But I didn’t cry because I felt guilty.

    Eleonora Ezerskaya, socialite

    – I am a happy person. My sister and I had nannies, and I have never been to a kindergarten, summer camp or country house. My mother did not work, she devoted her whole life to us. And my sister was once sent to this camp, but was taken away after a week.

    PROTECT THE FOREST FROM FIRE – MB Preschool “Kindergarten No. 253”

    Home > For You Parents > Safety > KEEP THE FOREST FROM FIRE

    8 out of 10 forest fires in Russia are human-caused. And although everyone knows that uncontrolled burning of dry grass carried out by the population, unextinguished bonfires, matches and cigarette butts thrown in the forest,
    from the window of a moving train or a passing car are the main sources of fires, the careless handling of fire by people continues to be the main cause of forest fires. disasters.

    The transition of uncontrolled grass fires on agricultural land into forests is the main cause of
    spring forest fires.

    “Blessed” and “All-revitalizing” – this is how the people call Spring. However, with the advent of
    spring days, the fire season
    begins in the forests of Russia and in the territories adjacent to forests, when all living things die in the fire of grass and forest fires. The transition of uncontrolled fire from grass burns on agricultural land to the forest is the main cause of spring forest fires. There is a persistent myth among the people that burning last year’s grass accelerates the growth of young grass. But for millions of years, the active growth of grass with the advent of spring occurred without human grass burning. Dry grass is not an obstacle for young shoots, the rapid decomposition of grass by worms and soil microorganisms in spring turns it into the most valuable humus (humus). By burning dry grass, people disrupt the natural process of humus formation and thereby impoverish soil fertility.
    Grass burns weaken the growth of plants, therefore, after the burns, the most unpretentious grasses survive and are the first to start growing. weeds of various kinds.
    During fires, many insects die, fires cause the death of clutches and nesting sites of birds, because for many, the nesting period begins already in April, i.e. during the period of active burning of dry grass by people. When grass is set on fire, all useful soil microorganisms also die, including those that help plants resist diseases.
    In a strong grass fire, practically all mammals living in dry grass or on the surface of the soil die from fire or suffocate in smoke.

    During fires, people die and lose their homes, natural resources
    senselessly perish, material values, smog is formed, hanging over cities and
    villages for days, and sometimes for weeks, from which there is no escape.

    The forest is the basis of the ecological, economic and social stability of every person.

    Forest is the main source of oxygen used by a huge army of modern technology for burning fuel, processing minerals, producing heat, electricity, all goods and services.

    The forest is the basis for the existence of life on Earth. We are so accustomed to this phrase that often
    we do not think about its multifaceted meaning. The forest is the basis of the existence of every person, as the main source of free oxygen in the atmosphere of our earth. The oxygen produced in the process of photosynthesis by forest plants is used in the operation of all types of transport and various technical systems, the number of which is constantly increasing. And the area of forests producing oxygen is steadily declining due to deforestation and forest fires.

    In order to protect forests from fires in the period from the day the snow cover melts until stable rainy autumn weather is established or snow cover is formed, it is prohibited:
    – to throw burning matches, cigarette butts, smoldering rags into the forest;
    – make a fire in thickets and coniferous young growth, under low-hanging crowns of trees;
    – leave spontaneously combustible material in the forest, glassware, which in sunny weather can focus the sun’s beam and ignite dry vegetation;
    – burn dry grass in forest glades, in gardens, in fields, under trees;
    – set fire to reeds;
    – make a fire in windy weather and leave it unattended;
    – leave the fire burning after leaving the parking lot.

    Violation of fire safety rules in forests provides for administrative and criminal liability in accordance with Articles 8.32 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation and Article 261
    of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

    Baby skin care case

    Baby care products vary in composition and function. The main purpose of cosmetics for babies is to soften, moisturize, soothe and protect hypersensitive skin. Since the epidermis of babies differs significantly in its anatomical and physiological features, special care will also be required for it. We tell you how to choose a skin care product for a newborn.

    Baby skin features

    After birth, the baby’s skin continues to develop and only by the age of 6 does it become similar to the skin of an adult. Let’s analyze the main features of the skin of newborns:

    • In a baby, the skin consists of only 3 layers: basal, spiny and horny (in an adult – from 5 layers).
    • The skin of a newborn has a much larger surface area than that of adults, and the surface layer of the skin is much thinner and more easily injured.
    • The sebaceous and sweat glands in infants are formed, but not active enough, so the hydro-lipid layer and the protective functions of the skin are weakened.
    • The skin has a higher permeability, due to which it loses moisture and heat more actively.
    • At birth, the pH of the skin is neutral, and only by 3 months it becomes acidic, increasing the protective functions of the epidermis.
    • The very low content of the protective pigment melanin in the skin of babies increases the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation.

    Newborn baby skin care

    From the first days of life, the epidermis adapts to the environment, therefore it is especially vulnerable to the influence of its external stimuli. He can react to any changes, whether it be changes in temperature or humidity, a change in nutrition or means for washing clothes, with dryness, redness, rash, and the appearance of diaper rash. Most often, the skin responds with increased sensitivity to the components in the composition of children’s cosmetics for care.

    How to choose baby skin care products

    Baby skin does not require complex multi-stage rituals, it will be enough to regularly cleanse, moisturize and protect the epidermis. Choose proven, hypoallergenic formulas that are dermatologically and pediatrically tested and scientifically proven to work. Such funds can be bought at pharmacies or specialized stores.

    When choosing baby skin care products, try to avoid some ingredients: parabens (preservatives), ethylene oxide (stabilizer), phenoxyethanol (preservative and antiseptic) and sodium hydroxide (acid corrector). Give preference to formulas without fragrances and fragrances, as some of them can be strong allergens.

    1. Cleansing is the first and main stage of skin care for a child from the first days of his life, which should be given special attention. Remember that the baby’s thin and sensitive skin can suffer with frequent water procedures, react to hard, too cold (less than 34 degrees) or hot (more than 37 degrees) water and the allergenic composition of bathing cosmetics.

    Bathe your baby daily, but use cleansers 1-2 times a week. For gentle cleansing, choose products with “soft” formulas without alkali. As a gentle cleansing, La Roche-Posay Lipikar Gel Protective Shower Gel is suitable. The gel gently cleanses, protects and soothes the sensitive epidermis of the child, and also restores its natural protective barrier. The unique Aqua Posae Filiformis complex in the composition of the product restores the skin microbiome. Can be used as a baby shampoo and as daily intimate hygiene when changing diapers.

    2. Hydration and protection is the second basic step in baby skin care. Look for a combination of moisturizing ingredients that prevent transepidermal moisture loss and firming, restoring the lipid barrier.

    La Roche-Posay Lipikar baby milk for dry to very dry skin is based on niacinamide, La Roche-Posay thermal water and a combination of protective lipids. Light product is quickly absorbed, soothes and restores the sensitive skin of a newborn, reduces the feeling of dryness and tightness. Does not contain fragrances and parabens.

    Keep your baby’s skin clean: change the diaper on time, carefully inspect areas in the folds to prevent diaper rash and diaper dermatitis. If redness or irritation occurs, use La Roche-Posay’s SOS remedy – Cicaplast Baume B5 multi-repair balm. The formula based on panthenol and madecassoside accelerates skin regeneration, effectively moisturizes, softens, and soothes dry, irritated areas.

    Gratiot-Isabella RESD first in region to split employee child care costs through new state program

    Holly Summerhill says she couldn’t be more grateful to her employer, Gratiot-Isabella RESD.

    Not only does she love her job as a Mt. Pleasant High School paraprofessional, but her employer is also sharing child care costs for her infant son, Bennett.

    “Full-time day care for Bennett would have cost more than our mortgage – over $700 a month,” says Summerhill, 25. “Thanks to the RESD and the Tri-Share program, we’re only paying one-third the cost. It’s really made a huge difference for our family.”

    For too many working families, paying for child care is an obstacle to employment. The state launched the new MI Tri-Share Child Care Pilot Program in March in hopes of making child care more affordable for parents, while also helping businesses retain workforce talent.

    With Tri-Share, child care costs are split equally between the state, eligible families, and their employers.

    For example, an employee paying $9,000 in annual child-care services will now pay $3,000, the employer will cover $3,000, and the state of Michigan will cover $3,000. Participating employers will also receive a tax credit at the end of the year to mitigate the employer’s contributions.

    Funded with a $1 million appropriation in the 2021 state budget, the program is operating in three regions of the state to start: the Great Lakes Bay Region (Isabella, Gratiot, Midland, Clare, Gladwin, Bay, Arenac, and Saginaw counties), as well as the Traverse City and Muskegon regions.

    The bipartisan cost-sharing program is the first of its kind in Michigan.

    “Every parent in Michigan deserves access to quality, safe, and affordable child care, and Tri-Share brings us one step closer to achieving that goal,” says Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

    State labor officials say finding child care has been an issue in Michigan for years. Now 18 months into the pandemic, many child care centers have closed or are struggling to hire qualified caregivers.

    Bennett Paksi loves going to day care at Children’s Discovery Academy. The academy partnered in 2020 with the Gratiot-Isabella RESD, St. Louis Public Schools and Masonic Pathways to bring affordable licensed child care to their employees.
    Across Michigan, 44% of families live in a child care desert. A child care desert is any census tract with more than 50 children under age 5 that contains either no child care providers or so few options that there are more than three times as many children as licensed child care slots.

    All this makes it more difficult for working parents to find affordable child care to rejoin – or remain – in the workforce. The impact is even greater among women, who disproportionately carry the family responsibility for child care.

    That labor shortage is, in turn, affecting Michigan’s economic recovery.

    A coalition of business and advocacy leaders, led by the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce and state Rep. Greg VanWoerkom, R-Norton Shores, championed funding for the pilot program.

    “It is a priority of mine to find innovative ideas in addressing affordable and accessible childcare. That is why I am proud to have been a part of an incredible effort to introduce this pilot program,” says VanWoerkom.

    The MI Tri-Share Child Care program addresses the issue of affordability head-on by bringing employers and the state to the table together as direct stakeholders, says Cheryl Bergman, CEO of the Michigan Women’s Commission (MWC), which is administering Tri-Share.

    COVID-19 has put a spotlight on the challenges working mothers faced well before there was a global pandemic, says Shannon Garrett, MWC’s chief strategy officer.

    “Michigan’s mothers of color, in particular, have long been sounding an alarm about the unsustainable balance required to work frontline and essential jobs without the availability of flexible, safe, and affordable child care options,” says Garrett.

    Tri-Share is designed to help working families, also known as ALICE households – Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. The 2021 ALICE Report found 38% of Michigan households still struggled to make ends meet in 2019, prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

    Employees eligible to participate in the Tri-Share pilot must be employed by a participating employer, have an income above 150% of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL) and below 250% FPL, and not otherwise be eligible for the Child Development and Care Program (commonly called the state child care subsidy).

    “Many of these families that would qualify for Tri-Share are working their butts off to make ends meet,” says Rich VanTol, supervisor of School-Home-Community Partnerships/Early Childhood Education at Bay-Arenac ISD. “But when child care costs $10,000 a year per child, many end up working just to pay for child care.”

    Martin Combs, Associate Superintendent for Special Services at Gratiot-Isabella RESD. The Gratiot-Isabella RESD (GIRESD) Board of Education decided to join the Tri-Share pilot program to attract and retain quality workers, says Martin Combs, GIRESD associate superintendent for special services.

    “We believe this will improve child care opportunities all across the Great Lakes Bay Region,” says Combs. “We strongly encourage other businesses to join us in piloting this program.”

    Participating employers must agree to identify and recruit eligible employees, provide employer portions of each participating employee’s child care costs, and maintain communication with the facilitator hub regarding each employee’s continued employment and eligibility.

    The RESD has seen quite a bit of employee interest in the program.

    Summerhill, who has worked with students with severe cognitive impairments at the RESD since 2017, says she and her fiancé, Julian Paksi, were thrilled to hear about the cost-sharing program. Their St. Louis home is just down the road from Bennett’s day care, Children’s Discovery Academy, which partnered in 2020 with the Gratiot-Isabella RESD, St. Louis Public Schools, and Masonic Pathways to bring affordable licensed child care opportunities to their employees.

    “It’s hard taking your child to day care. But it’s easier knowing my employer trusts a day care enough to put their employees’ kids there,” says Summerhill.

    Thanks to Tri-Share, Summerhill’s portion is $63 per week, versus the full price of $190.

    “I’m very thankful the RESD has been willing to do this for their employees,” she says. “This is a great way for employers to take care of their staff and a small price to pay in the long run for a happy employee.

    How to care for Isabella grapes. Peculiarities of variety

    Isabella grapes – table-technical variety. It has a wide range of applications: wine, juices are made from berries, they are used as raw materials for preparations, they are consumed fresh.

    Breeding history

    An ancient Isabella grape variety discovered in North America in 1816. He was seen by breeder William Prince in the garden of the Gibbs family. In honor of the mistress of the house, Isabella, the grapes were named.

    The variety was formed naturally by cross-pollination of local grapes Vytis Labruska and the European variety Vytis Vinifera.

    It immediately became widespread in many countries of the world. In the 20th century, Isabella grapes were widely used in the Soviet Union: they grew it in summer cottages, decorated arbors and arches with it. Despite the fact that since then many varieties of the crop have been bred by breeders, it continues to be cultivated in various climatic zones.

    Description

    Grape forms long, fast growing vines. Having reached 3-4 years of age, the variety grows 4-meter shoots. The leaves are large, three-lobed. From the inside they are silver-green, strongly pubescent, from above – smooth, dark green.

    2-5 large-fruited clusters are formed on the shoot. The weight of the bunches is 200-250 grams, but some of them increase their mass up to 1. 5 kilograms; the shape is an inverted cone. The berries are round, their color is dark blue, almost purple. Their skin is dense, covered with a bluish bloom.

    Ripening period

    The culture belongs to late-ripening varieties: the vegetation period lasts 5-6 months. Grape brushes ripen in October. The signal that the time has come to harvest is the aroma of nutmeg, spreading through the garden plot. The first crop is harvested 3-4 years after planting the vines.

    Nutritional value

    The taste of berries is sweet and sour. The peel is easily separated from the pulp, inside which there is a small amount of seeds. The sugar content of fruits reaches 16-18 percent, the calorie content in 100 grams is 65 Kcal. They contain a large number of useful substances necessary for the human body.

    Additional information. In some European countries, wine from Isabella grapes is prohibited for production and import due to the high content of menthol alcohol in it.

    Isabella grape load on the bush. Spraying

    Although the Isabella grape variety is resistant to many pests and diseases, there is a risk of infection if not properly cared for. At home, you can spray with a soda solution. To do this, use the following recipe:0003

    • warm water – 10 l;
    • table salt – 120 g;
    • baking soda – 25 g.

    But if you use this solution alone, it will not be able to create a complete protection against pests. A positive result can be achieved only if it is used in combination with stronger drugs, which include:

    • Bordeaux liquid;
    • Topaz;
    • Shavit;
    • Falcon;
    • Paracelsus.

    You may also be interested in information about the existing

    Isabella White grapes. Early The White Isabella (Noah) grape variety was obtained through numerous re-rootings for different chibouks. Among them, perhaps, there was material from the classic “Isabella”. Synonyms: Fraga Albe, Belo Otelo, Charvat, Tatar Riesling, Noka, Noe, Nova. Bushes vigorous. The leaves are large, rounded, slightly dissected, three-lobed or entire, covered with dense arachnoid pubescence from below. Petiole notch open, vaulted. The flower is bisexual. Clusters are medium, cylindric, usually with one wing, medium dense. The berries are small, round, light green with a slight yellowish tint. The skin is thin. The flesh is slimy, with an isabelle flavor. Shoot maturation is good. Productivity is 55-60 q/ha. The growth of the bushes is violent, the shoots are creeping. Grows without grafting on deep, sandy or sandy loamy soils. Resistant to frost, mildew and oidium. Phylloxera resistance on clay soils is insufficient. Sensitive to the content of lime in the soil. A very productive variety. Used in the past in winemaking, can also be used as a rootstock. Due to the low quality of the resulting wine, it is now processed into grape juice and brandy.

    Lydia and Isabella grapes. When to harvest Lydia grapes?

    Harvesting takes place approximately 145 days after the first ovaries appear. Usually, the active harvest of Lydia grapes occurs at the end of August or at the very beginning of September. From one bush you can get up to 35 kilograms of excellent fruits, if you follow all the rules of agricultural technology and, of course, all the rules and regulations for plant care. The peculiarity of the variety is also that ripe berries can crumble very easily. This is a great difficulty, so it is best to produce brushes in dry and, preferably, in calm weather, so that the berries simply do not crumble to the ground.

    When brushes are cut, they should be carefully examined. Berries that are damaged are best set aside immediately. The crop is harvested in containers in which holes are made so that the harvested crop is ventilated. In a box, you can collect no more than 13 kilograms of fruit. If there are more of them in the container, then the berries can be wrinkled and, accordingly, in this form they can deteriorate much faster, and this is a big drawback.
    One of the advantages of the Lydia grape variety is that it can be consumed both fresh and preserved. The variety is excellent for making grape jam or jams, as well as berry compotes or fruit drinks.

    It is best to prune the bush in the second year of growth, and do this at least three times during the whole season. In the spring, sanitary pruning of Lydia grapes is carried out – dry, damaged and unviable shoots are removed. In the summer, the procedure is carried out in order to thin out the bush and make it more accurate. In addition, pruning is another step in preparing the grapes for wintering. It is worth noting that Lydia grapes have a frost resistance higher than many other varieties, but it is still better to use additional shelter, especially for young seedlings, it will not be superfluous at all.

    How to prune isabella grapes in spring. Rules for pruning grapes

    In order to ensure the fruiting function of a grape bush, it is left with a pair of annual vines growing on a two-year-old plant. The cut points should be left in one place, on the inside. To this end, the processes should be on the outside from the middle of the growth of the bush and below the tendrils. Incorrectly placed notches will prevent the juice from flowing through the grapes. Shoots that are one year old or more are removed and half a centimeter shoots are left at the cut points. The size of the left parts is important, as it will affect the growth of the bush and its recovery. The place of cutting of plots that have been growing on a bush for many years should be perpendicular to the axis.

    Pruning a year old vine is done between the knot a couple of centimeters from the top section. It is recommended to make an incision at an angle in order to correctly direct the current of juice along the vine. Particular attention is paid to pruning the plant, the territorial location of which exposes the bush to the threat of getting sick with various species diseases.

    The Isabella grape plant does not tolerate pruning well and is unable to heal damaged areas on its own. Therefore, several principles should be followed:

    1. The plant should be cleaned infrequently, but thoroughly.
    2. It is important to leave bulges at the cut points, do not cut under the root.
    3. Those varieties that are not covered for the winter are cleaned in the spring, the rest in the fall.

    Do not make Isabella grapes cut up and down. Three cut points are enough for each arrow of grapes: one is for the vegetative area, the second is for pruning the vine. More complete pruning should be done before the vegetative period is reached.

    Trimming, leaving a small bulge at the cut points, helps the healing process to improve and reduce the losses from the operation. The plant is not capable of healing wounds, it is not a tree, but a grape bush. Keep this in mind when it comes to pruning.

    The pruning period depends on the climatic conditions of the region, if in the northern parts it is correct to clean the Isabella bush in the fall, then in the south it is better in the spring, although it is also possible in the fall. But the circumcised Isabella in the south during the autumn period will be less adapted to survive the winter cold.

    If the bush has been covered, it is better to prune after you have harvested. With both pruning and cover, the timing must be right so that the plant does not over-rot in the cover. But it didn’t get too cold either.

    Properly shaped Isabella bush helps to avoid pruning in the summer, since everything has been done before.

    Harvest will be larger on strong growing vineyard bushes. The harvest will not be so much, but the berries will have an impressive size.

    You should assess the situation reasonably and be aware that large clusters on dense bushes will require you to spend a lot of physical labor and time to care for the plant. But this can be prevented by growing an average Isabella bush. In summer, the main work is to remove excess shoots and bunches of grapes.

    Proper pruning in spring should be carried out by timely control of the flow of flowering of planting material. If the inflorescences began to open, then the cleaning of the bush should not be done in the spring, but after harvesting the Isabella grape variety.

    On which branches grapes bear fruit. What you need to know before forming a bush

    Grapes – liana, in the wild lets out meter-long lashes, clinging to any support, most often to trees. Its main task is to reach for the sun, accumulate nutrients, and give fruits for reproduction in the fall. Each cultivated bush on your site secretly dreams of growing up to ten meters up, hanging a few clusters somewhere under the roof. His plans do not include the obligation to supply you with a crop.

    A healthy plant has a colossal power of regeneration, it can and should be cut ruthlessly, otherwise you will not get high yields – in a thickened bush the berries will become smaller, and only climb from a stepladder to get the tassels.

    Remember, no pity – just a clear understanding of what you need from him.

    Let’s take a closer look at the wood of your plant. Here you need to be able to distinguish its three types: summer, biennial and perennial shoots. Summer – green, bearing leaves, flowers, brushes. Biennial – vines, chocolate shade, summer shoots grow from them with a harvest. Perennial – branches, dark, bark often fringed. Branches accumulate nutrients for laying the future crop. No special fruit twigs, like apple trees. Any green shoot can equally well play both a vegetative and fruitful role. It all depends on the formation.

    Now let’s deal with what you have. Do you have cold winters? How much space can you devote to a vineyard? Do you need a vine for aesthetics or purely for gastronomic purposes? The time has come to understand all the nuances of the formation.

    Summer pruning of Isabella grapes. How to prune grapes before flowering?

    After the spring pruning, the gardener’s attention to the grape bushes should not weaken, because along with the fruiting eyes, fat shoots coming from the old parts of the vine or from the base of the shoots also grow. When and how to prune grapes in the summer from unnecessary shoots at this stage? A fragment of grapes is carried out in the last decade of May or early summer, when new green shoots reach a length of up to 15–20 cm and are easy to remove.

    With proper breaking of shoots on a bush and pruning of grapes in summer, it is possible to achieve:

    • the presence on each plant of the number of shoots corresponding to the strength of the bush;
    • a good start for the full maturation of the shoots and the laying of a plentiful crop;
    • preservation of crops from grape diseases and pest attacks;
    • access of air and sun to the ovary;
    • redirection of nutrition from parasitic shoots to brushes;
    • the correct formation of a bush for the next year.

    If the tops do not break out in time, they develop at the expense of nutrients, which at this time are essential for flowering and the formation of the ovary. In addition, fatty shoots shade the bush, prevent the penetration of air and sunlight into the crown, and even prevent the formation of future berries.

    In parallel, when pruning grapes in July or earlier, remove wild shoots growing from the underground part of the bush, but leave cultivated shoots without inflorescences if they are required in the future for the formation of grapes. The stronger the plant, the more shoots left.

    You will need : 15 kg of grapes, sugar to taste, water if needed .

    Cooking . Crush the berries selected for making wine with your hands or with a potato press. Leave the resulting pulp for 3-4 days and stir 1-2 times a day. Then strain through cheesecloth and squeeze out the juice. If it turned out too sour, add 50-500 ml of water to it (per 1 liter of juice). Pour the juice into the bottle, filling it 2/3, add half the sugar (at the rate of 100-150 g per 1 liter of juice), seal it tightly with a water seal or put a rubber glove on the neck with a hole made in one finger and leave it in a dark room with room temperature (16-22°C).

    After 5 days, add half of the remaining sugar, diluting it with 0.5 liters of expressed fermenting juice and pouring it back into the bottle. After another 5 days, add the remaining sugar. In total, fermentation will last 35-70 days. When the glove falls off, the wine itself brightens, and the sediment sinks to the bottom, carefully pour the wine into a clean container, removing it from the sediment. At this stage, you can add more sugar, leaving for 7-10 days under a water seal. Seal the container well and place in a cool (6-16°C) dark place to age. Add 250 g of granulated sugar to the hot puree. Mix thoroughly until completely dissolved and leave to cool, then place in the refrigerator overnight.

    Start making marshmallows. Beat the chilled puree and one egg white (also chilled). After 2-3 minutes while beating, add the second protein. WORK WORK WORK WORLE grapes, whose homeland is the state of South Carolina, which successfully migrated to the Russian expanses. On the territory of Europe, the species took root as early as the 17th century, and domestic winegrowers have already inherited from Europeans many rules and tricks for growing and caring for Isabella.

      The Isabella grape, whose description includes a number of features, has become known throughout the world for its characteristics. It belongs to table-technical varieties and, accordingly, manifests itself better in juices and wines than fresh. The bush can please the gardener with both generous fruits and an aesthetic appearance, and therefore it is quite popular to grow a small amount of vines as a decoration of the land.

      Due to the increased vegetation, the bush is often used as a rootstock for less weak varieties. Isabella today actively grows in temperate climates around the world, but the most planted are countries such as Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Russia, in particular, the Moscow region.

      The reason why this species is so fond of countries with seasonal cooling is its frost resistance. According to practical experience, in its original form it is intended for fruiting in cold and damp. For all gardeners living in the above territories, it will be a big plus that such a bush takes moisture better than drought. Although this culture is prone to decay and requires ventilation, yet an abundance of moisture will only betray its strength.

      An important moment of cultivation is the ripening of berries. This happens when other species have already served their gardener and hibernated until the next season. For the first fruiting from the moment the buds ripen, it will take no more than 180 days. During this period, the watery fruit acquires up to 80% moisture, which makes it an easy, attractive snack and dessert for any feast.

      Isabella grapes in the yard – on the photo

      How and when the Isabella grape variety appeared:

      Features of pruning Isabella grapes in autumn

      Isabella grape variety appeared not as a result of the work of scientific breeders, but due to nature itself. Scientists have made the assumption that there was a crossing of varieties Vitis Vinifera (European variety) and Vitis Lambrusca at the time of cross-pollination.

      The official name of the variety Isabella is Isabella Banskaya and has been popular for 2 centuries, both among professionals and amateur gardeners.

      This variety was first encountered on the path of the American breeder William Prince on Long Island. He described this variety and derived a new one based on it – Isabella Pink, which in our country was called Lydia.

      As for the Isabella variety, it has been cultivated in our country since the middle of the 20th century. He showed himself perfectly as a variety that always brings large yields, as a plant resistant to many different diseases and unpretentiousness in care. Thanks to all these qualities, winemakers from all over the country began to grow Isabella on their plantations, for the manufacture of juices or brandy. Wine is not made from the berries of Isabella White, due to the fact that it turns out to be of poor quality.

      At the moment, Isabella began to be grown in almost every corner of our vast country. It is also very popular in such countries as Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan. On the territory of these countries, the variety is grown both for private use in small areas, and for industrial use in large areas, in order to use the fruits for the production of wines.

      Isabella prefers to grow in a temperate subtropical climate. Unlike other varieties, Isabella is a frost-resistant plant, which allows it to be grown throughout Russia.

      Interesting fact: Toward the end of the 20th century, the European Union decided to impose a ban on the production of wines from Isabella grapes, due to the high content of methanol in it. Some time later, it was proved that the earlier conclusions were erroneous, but this did not change the attitude of the Europeans towards this variety.

      Planting and care

      Planting

      How to make Isabella compote at home

      Seedlings are rooted cuttings. Planting material is divided into elite and first-class. The first has about 5 roots of identical thickness and a mature growth of 25 cm. First-class – 4 roots and 20 cm of the same indicator.

      During landing, a pit is prepared for each of them. Drainage is laid out at its bottom (it can be expanded clay, coarse sand or stones), then wood ash comes, fertilizer is superphosphate, and at the end it is sprinkled with earth. Isabella grapes require a place that is well warmed by the sun and closed from the wind. Wetlands or areas with a close location of groundwater will not work.

      It is better not to carry out such a process later, as the plant will need time to build up the root system. Landing is also allowed in the spring. For this, the first or second half of May is suitable. The choice of the period depends on the weather conditions.

      It is not recommended to plant seedlings near the fence, but in the future it is better to let the grown vine along it. Often they use special supports with a rope stretched between them. They are exhibited at a distance of about 3 m. At the same time, the lower vine recedes from the ground to a height of up to 1 meter, and the upper one – by 1.5-2 m.

      It is important to know that if seedlings at the initial stage of growth are at home or in a greenhouse, then when they are planted in open ground, it is necessary to create partial shade. This is required to eliminate the likelihood of burns of grape leaves.

      This variety has a ripening period of 180 days.

      Formation of vines

      Formation of vines is necessary during the second season of the crop in the open field. Initially, 7-8 shoots are left on it, which are smoothly bent and fixed to the trellis in a horizontal position. As the growth of shoots increases to the next level of the wire, they are fixed to it, having previously placed a soft cloth to prevent chafing of the plant.

      Necessary methods for caring for Isabella grapes:

      • watering,
      • cutting,
      • mulching,
      • winter shelter from the cold,
      • pest control.

      For sandy soils, watering is carried out often, but in small proportions, and for clay soils, on the contrary, rarely, but plentifully. In both cases, slurry is supplied with water once a month.

      Peat, hay, sawdust are used for these purposes.

      Before the appearance of berries, fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers is carried out, the introduction of concentrated manure is completely excluded. The first introduction of elements useful for the plant is carried out in the spring. For this, carbamide or ammonium nitrate are suitable. 12 days before flowering, it is recommended to feed the vineyard with an infusion of dandelions, nettles or bird droppings.

      Pruning

      Pruning is required in autumn, after the leaves have dropped. At the same time, dead and diseased shoots are removed. The top of the bush is adjusted with a pruner at an angle of 90 degrees.

      It is required to remove the growth by one third, and dead shoots by two thirds. During the summer, the crop is surveyed to remove unwanted foliage to maintain proper aeration

      It is important to thin out the bunches in the vineyard. If they do not touch, then the harvest will be greater.

      The recommended norm for the number of clusters on one adult plant is 30-35 pieces.

      Pest prophylaxis

      Pest prophylaxis is carried out with slaked lime. For the winter, Isabella needs to be bent down and placed in specially dug trenches, and then sprinkled with earth and peat. On top of this, an air-permeable covering material is placed.

      Spruce or pine spruce branches and wooden shields will reliably protect the plant from low temperatures. In winter, such a structure is swept with snow, which serves as even more protection for it.

      In the spring, the vineyard should not be opened before the time when the temperature is finally set to at least 5 degrees. If at the same time the threat of frost continues to persist, then holes are made in the covering material so that the plant gradually gets used to such a temperature regime. A couple of days before the onset of cold weather, vines are recommended to be treated with a solution of Epin. The term of their protective action is up to 10 days.

      Benefits and harms of grapes Isabella

      Lydia grape variety

      Isabella grapes are used for making wine, making tasty dark juice, compotes and jams. Some even know how to make moonshine. You can eat raw berries. Wine made from dark Isabella grapes has one drawback. If it is stored for more than 3 years, it acquires a distinct smell of rot. It does not matter whether the wine is made at home or at the factory.

      The variety has many useful properties, surpasses other varieties in some indicators. For example, leaflets contain tannins, high levels of organic matter, vitamins and minerals. Berries have a lot more antioxidants and anthocyanins than other varieties. Clusters also contain iron, potassium, vitamin C in high concentrations. Here are a number of uses for Isabella:

      • To heal wounds and abrasions, apply leaflets to the sore spot
      • Grape leaf reduces fever well when placed on the forehead, neck, heels, armpits
      • Leaf decoction has expectorant and antiseptic properties, suitable for gargling with sore throats, it is recommended for coughs and colds
      • Foliage increases blood clotting, a decoction is often used for nosebleeds (instilled into the nose)
      • Antioxidants and anthocyanins of berries protect cells from free radicals, reduce the risk of oncology
      • Vitamins and minerals boost immunity, serve to prevent colds
      • Grapes are often used to treat anemia, they contain more iron than pomegranates
      • There are also benefits for the heart, potassium has a positive effect on myocardial function
      • Some substances in the composition of berries improve blood rheology, preventing increased clotting and the formation of blood clots
      • Grapes perfectly cleanse the body of toxic substances.

      In addition, it is recommended to eat at least 100 grams of berries per day. Most of the nutrients are in the bones and peel, therefore it is recommended to eat whole berries. You can make jam for the winter by rubbing whole fruits with sugar without boiling. It must be stored in the refrigerator. It is not advised to eat Isabella for patients with diabetes mellitus, stomach ulcers, hemophilia

      With caution, grapes should be consumed by people who have high acidity, stomatitis, and intestinal problems. Organic acids adversely affect tooth enamel, so it is better to drink juice through a straw

      Autumn planting – basic rules

      In order for a bush to bear generous and healthy fruits, the most important rules for care and cultivation must be followed at each stage of its vegetation.

      Planting in autumn includes a number of procedures and subsequent preventive maintenance, which are recognized by experienced summer residents and winegrowers. First of all, for planting, you need to determine a good piece of land. It should be a hill or just an area open to the heat of the sun, preferably remote from high fences

      It is important to choose a place filed from groundwater, where air circulates freely and does not stagnate.

      According to experts, autumn is the best period for planting grapes, because during the winter the root system and the soil near the bush exchange their substances and strengthen each other. This will subsequently significantly improve the harvest, and already in late September – early October, the fragrant bush will give the summer resident its fruits.

      Isabella large-fruited or its other variety is bred in the same way: the size of the hole for the seedling should be 80x80x80 cm with a small layer of drainage cover in the form of crushed stone. After installing the support peg, all this is covered with a small layer of earth, then 3 buckets of compost, 300 grams of superphosphates and a certain amount of wood ash must be added. Everything is abundantly moistened and sprinkled with earth to a third of the depth of the pit.

      The first seedling is introduced and tied up near the support post, which must be sprinkled and compacted at the base

      It is important that the branching point of the bush is above the ground and does not come into contact with it. After that, you need to water the bush with 1-2 liters of water, and fertilize the ground around it with humus

      It is recommended to perform seating under a pre-prepared frame, on which the vine will later grow. Since the root system of this culture is quite developed, it should be seated at intervals of half a meter.

      Description of grapes Isabella

      This grape variety received its current name in 1816. His “godfather” was the Brooklyn gardener William Price, who so immortalized the name of his friend’s wife – the first beauty of Dorchester (North Carolina) – Isabella Gibbs.

      The Isabella grape variety stands out for its tall, dense bushes, making it attractive to landscape designers. At first, he is not happy with the growth rate. However, 3 years after planting, its branches of the plant lengthen annually by 3–4 meters. Young shoots are greenish-crimson in color, while the old vine remains grey-brown.

      Dark green three-lobed vine leaves with a gray-white color on the reverse side. By autumn, Isabella’s foliage turns golden.

      Cylindrical, inverted cone shaped clusters are not characterized by a high density of berries. With an average weight of 200 to 250 g, in especially fruitful years, the mass of individual specimens exceeds 2 kg. Each shoot carries an average of 3 bunches.

      With a diameter of around 18 mm, the mass of Isabella berries reaches 3 g. Dark blue oval-shaped grape fruits are distinguished by juicy pulp with rare seeds. A significant sugar content (15.4–18%), as well as an original sour-sweet aftertaste, make the variety attractive to winemakers. The period between flowering and harvesting takes about six months.

      Isabella grapes are common in the southern regions (Crimea, Caucasus). Due to its high frost resistance, the variety is actively moving to the central part of Russia, it can be found in the Urals and even in Siberia.

      Isabella grape varieties

      Constant selection of Isabella grapes contributes to the emergence of new varieties with improved useful properties.

      A plant has been bred from black grapes, the clusters of which are created by berries of amber shade. By many characteristics, the Isabella Belaya grape surpasses its progenitor, and its appearance and taste increase the attractiveness of the variety as an exquisite dessert.

      Lydia and Seneca remain the leaders among Isabella grape varieties common in Russia. However, they are gradually being replaced by new representatives of the isabelle dynasty, which have a more pleasant taste, are devoid of mucous pulp, are distinguished by a short ripening period of berries and other useful qualities. These varieties include:

      • Simone;
      • Era;
      • Minsk pink;
      • Supaga;
      • Sucribe;
      • Alden;
      • Alwood;
      • Zilga;
      • Agra etc.

      Not distinguished by large berries and clusters, the new isabelle varieties give a stable harvest and do not create difficulties in care, which makes them attractive for growing in suburban areas of the middle lane.

      Isabelle raisins are of no less interest, which are represented by Venus, Relines pink seed, Romulus and Einset seed. Grapes of these varieties are not inferior in size to Isabella and Lydia. They are completely pitted, contain a high percentage of sugar, resistant to mildew.

      Low drought resistance is one of the few shortcomings of the variety. At the same time, Isabella grapes feel great in areas with high humidity. The plant easily tolerates cold. Its roots and vine do not need to be covered when the air temperature does not fall below 7-8 degrees below zero.

      Productivity and fruiting

      The classic variety Isabella ripens quite late. The dates when the grapes ripen are limited to October, November. Unfavorable conditions, in the form of cold snaps and constant rains, have little effect on the quality of berries, as well as the yield, which often exceeds 70 kg per bush.

      Fruit area

      Initially, Isabella was bred as a wine variety due to its high sugar content and yield. However, methyl compounds present in its composition have forced some countries to abandon isabelle wines. The latter did not in the least undermine the reputation of grapes, but only expanded its scope. In addition to eating fresh berries and adding to various desserts, Isabella fruits are used in the production of compotes, jams, marmalades, and other preserves. Grape extracts are in demand in the cosmetics industry.

      Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

      Among the main advantages of the Isabella grape variety are:

      • increased frost resistance;
      • unpretentious care;
      • resistance to fungal diseases;
      • adaptation to different climatic conditions;
      • accelerated recovery after damage;
      • transportability.

      The disadvantages of the variety include:

      • exactingness in moisture;
      • tough peel;
      • late aging;
      • specific (“fox”) flavor, which is not approved by all wine producers.

      Advantages and disadvantages of variety

      The undeniable advantages of Isabella grapes include:

      • general unpretentiousness. Variety Isabella is undemanding to fertilizing, soil quality, has good immunity. Even a novice gardener will cope with its cultivation;
      • high frost resistance for grapes. Isabella, without much damage to herself, endures cold temperatures down to -32–35ºС in the presence of shelter. Without it – up to -25–28ºС. This allows you to grow such grapes not only in Moldova, Ukraine, southern Russia, but also in regions less suitable for this crop, for example, in the Moscow region, even without winter shelter. If Isabella falls under return spring frosts, new shoots at the site of the victims are formed in 2-3 weeks and have time to fully form this season;
      • the presence of immunity against diseases typical of the culture. Isabella is extremely rarely affected by such fungal diseases as mildew, oidium, powdery mildew, gray rot, and almost does not suffer from phylloxera. The disease does not spread to her vines, even if adjacent varieties are affected by it;
      • the ability to tolerate waterlogging of the soil well. Many grape varieties develop rot as a result of frequent and/or heavy watering;
      • ease of reproduction. Cuttings take root very easily, they require minimal care;
      • versatility of purpose. Unloved by European winemakers, the taste is considered quite acceptable in Russia, the USA, Australia, South America, and other countries. Yes, you can’t name high-quality wine from Isabella, but after all, the majority of people who do not understand the intricacies of the bouquet of this drink. Many people like it well. But for juices, compotes, and other homemade preparations, the “nutmeg” aroma gives a slight piquancy;
      • low calorie content (only 65 kcal per 100 g). For grapes, this is, in principle, very atypical. Isabella can be quite possible to use in order to diversify the diet. Also, despite the rich color of the skin, this variety rarely causes allergies;
      • decorative value. Even if the climate does not allow grapes to be harvested, Isabella can be used in landscaping for landscaping a garden plot. It looks very impressive, wrapping around a gazebo, veranda, fence. In autumn, the leaves take on a very beautiful golden yellow hue.

      Isabella is not least valued for its unpretentiousness and the ability to consistently and abundantly bear fruit in less than ideal climatic and weather conditions

      The variety also has some disadvantages:

      Isabella reacts very negatively even to a short drought. This is not good for the yield

      Therefore, watering the grapes should be given special attention. Otherwise, the vine may partially or completely shed leaves and brushes.

      Those berries that still ripen become very small and acquire a tart taste.
      The variety is sensitive to high lime content in the soil. Slaked lime for soil deoxidation is strongly not recommended. You can add dolomite flour, sifted wood ash, powdered eggshells to the garden bed. Isabella also does not like acidic soil, so it is advisable to find out the acid-base balance in advance.
      Anthracnose susceptibility. Its prevention must be carried out annually, in spring and autumn.
      The presence of a characteristic aftertaste, called foxy by professional winemakers, which is given to the berries by specific essential oils and acetophenone contained in the skin. It vaguely resembles garden strawberries, but not real, but artificial flavoring. For winemaking, this is considered a very serious drawback (it is typical for all American varieties and hybrids), causing the appearance of an unpleasant putrefactive smell in the bouquet of wine, noticeable even to a non-professional, after only three years of storage.

      Specialists do not rate Isabella wine very highly, but many amateur winemakers quite like it.

      Isabella grapes. Proper planting

      The main thing to consider is the quality of the seedlings. Where do you buy planting material? Are you sure that these seedlings meet all the requirements? Experts recommend giving preference to proven nurseries and not trusting dubious sellers.

      Although Isabella is not a demanding grape and is easily accepted in all conditions, it will produce a poor harvest in poor, infertile soil. The only area where grapes will not grow is saline soil. It is also worth taking care of the presence of a small drainage system. For this purpose, you can use expanded clay or small gravel.

      Take care of the presence of a drainage system

      Consider the main stages of planting:

      1. Landing time. Isabella grape seedlings can be planted in spring and autumn. The main condition is warm earth. Experienced growers are advised to give preference to the autumn period, because during the winter the root system will get stronger enough and develop.
      2. Location. In order for a grape bush to actively develop and grow, it needs sunlight. Do not plant a plant near trees or bushes that provide shade.
      3. Hole. The recess for one bush should be slightly larger than the root system of the seedling. Before planting, the main roots are slightly shortened, and the damaged roots are completely eliminated.
      4. Fertilizers. During planting, it is necessary to apply a small dose of mineral or organic fertilizers. The latter include everything except fresh mullein, since its use can cause many diseases and pests.
      5. Distance between rows. Isabella does not like close proximity, so seedlings are planted at a distance of at least 2 meters.

      Care of Isabella grapes

      As for care, it is quite simple and includes only regular, plentiful watering, especially in dry weather. Grapes do not tolerate the lack of moisture, so you should organize its flow. Also, many use soil mulching – an effective method to retain moisture, improve nutrition, and also the appearance of weeds. It is also an additional protection of the root system from the influence of severe frosts.

      Isabella grapes, planting and caring for which even beginner summer residents can do, will surely bring you a good harvest.

      Cultivation features

      In order for Isabella grapes to give good yields, you need to choose and organize the right place, as well as select high-quality seedlings.

      For this variety of grapes you need:

      • A site well lit by the sun and ventilated.
      • Medium acid soil.
      • When planted in autumn and under favorable conditions, it is possible to harvest the next year.
      • Removing weeds and loosening the soil.
      • This variety is moisture-loving, you need to provide him with regular watering.
      • Application of mineral fertilizers up to 3 times per season, organic every 2-3 years.

      Pruning

      To quickly form grapes on a high trunk, use the method of molding on stepchildren. To do this, within 4 years, you need to trim according to the following scheme by year:

      Second

      • In the spring – pruning of the annual shoot, leaving 2-3 eyes.
      • Cut off green shoots that have reached a length of 10-20 cm.
      • Remove green shoots again when they reach 40-50 cm in length.
      • Each time you need to leave one, the most developed escape.
      • When the length of the shoot reaches a length of 10 cm above the planned trunk, it is necessary to emboss (remove the top of the shoot).
      • After that, there should be 2 upper stepchildren located opposite each other.
      • When the shoots grow more than 30 cm, they must be tied up in different directions and pinched.
      • When the stepchildren of the second level grow up, they need to be thinned out so that the distance between them is at least 20 cm.

      Third

      • Trim stepchildren of the second level, leaving 3-4 eyes.
      • After swelling, the kidneys are removed, leaving the top two.
      • When shoots grow from these buds, they need to be thinned and tied up.

      Fourth

      • Cut off the shoot that is closest to the ground, leaving 2 to 4 buds (replacement knots) on it.
      • Form a fruit arrow from the top shoot, leaving up to 10 buds.

      In the future, the bush needs annual maintenance and sanitary pruning.

      Diseases and pests

      Isabella is a disease and pest resistant variety. It tolerates frosty winters very well. But with a lack of moisture, it can drop leaves or give a poorer harvest. You can learn about the system of resistance of grape varieties from a separate article.

      “Isabella” is usually not in danger of being attacked by bees. It is rather problematic for insects to pierce the thick skin of these berries.

      Common insect pests such as leafworms, felt mites and spider mites can be treated with a variety of insecticides available from garden stores.

      Yet the best way to fight disease is prevention. To prevent the ingress and reproduction of insects, the vineyard is sprayed with Bordeaux liquid, a solution of copper or iron sulphate. To avoid infection with fungal diseases, the bushes are treated with a solution of slaked lime.

      Winter shelter

      Isabella has good frost resistance. Thanks to this, it has become very popular with gardeners in Central Russia. The vine can withstand temperatures down to -30°C and does not require shelter for the winter. Even if the bush freezes slightly in the spring, new shoots will appear that can fully grow in a season.

      Harvest storage

      The keeping quality of grapes is affected by various weather and storage conditions. Despite the fact that “Isabella” refers to varieties with a long shelf life, excess moisture can spoil the berries ahead of time. Therefore, the crop is harvested in dry weather, after several days have passed since the last rain.

      These grapes keep up to several months if hung from the bunch in a dry and cool place.

      Regions

      Gardeners all over Russia fell in love with unpretentious “Isabella”. Therefore, this grape can be found in garden plots throughout the country – from Dagestan and the Krasnodar Territory, to the Moscow region, the Volga region and even Siberia.

      But it is important to understand that this late variety may not have time to ripen if the northern regions had a very cool summer and the plant did not have enough sunny days.

      Harm from Isabella grapes

      Isabella grape berries are good for the body, but under certain circumstances they can cause harm. Doctors do not recommend eating black fruits under the following conditions:

      • High content increases gas formation in the intestines, therefore grapes are not recommended for people prone to flatulence. Even a healthy person should not abuse berries.
      • An increased amount of simple carbohydrates makes berries dangerous for diseases such as diabetes.
      • The calorie content in fruits is increased, the energy value of the product is 70-73 kcal/100 g, which is higher than that of other varieties. This variety is not advised to eat for obese people who want to reduce the calorie content of the menu.
      • Polyphenols adversely affect kidney filtration. The hybrid is contraindicated for people with chronic and acute diseases of these organs.
      • Rinse your mouth after eating the fruit, as the juice damages tooth enamel.
      • In some cases, the hybrid causes allergies.
      • You can not combine the use of grapes with milk, fatty foods, sparkling water, so as not to cause problems with digestion.
      • Pregnant, lactating women and children under 3 years of age, the Isabella grape variety will not be useful.

      In order for grapes to be useful, all contraindications to its use should be taken into account. You should also not abuse berries, otherwise the benefits from them will turn into harm.

      Dangerous properties of grapes

      Back in the 70s of the last century, it was found that Isabella wine contains more methyl alcohol than other brands. Studies around the world have confirmed this feature. It is due to the fact that pectins are converted into methyl alcohol during fermentation. They are in any variety of grapes, but Isabella has more of them in her composition. If in wines from European varieties the amount of this substance is 30-40 mg / l, then in Isabella – 70-120 mg. It finds its way into both industrial and domestic wines.

      Eating large amounts of berries can be harmful

      Methyl alcohol is broken down in the digestive tract into formaldehyde and formic acid. Formaldehyde negatively affects the liver and nervous system. It damages the optic nerve and causes blindness. In high doses, the substance is life-threatening, in low doses it causes chronic poisoning.

      Over the past decades, many firms have tried to refute this claim. There is evidence that in some brands of red wines there is even more methyl alcohol, up to 350 mg / l. They called the data a falsification ordered by producers of more expensive types of wine, because the Isabella brand belongs to a cheap price category.

    SUGAR LAND – Our Texas – Russian Newspaper in Houston, Dallas, San-Antonio, Austin, Texas

    Sugar cane and cotton are among the most labour-intensive crops. And the southern part of Texas – low, flat, always on the verge of flooding – has been an ideal place for them to grow for centuries. The largest number of sugarcane plantations were in the counties of Fort Bend, Brazoria, Warton and Matagorda.

    At first, slaves worked on these plantations, and the planters sold the fruits of their labor at great profit. Hard labor, because, firstly, work on cane plantations was physically difficult, secondly, sugar cane is a favorite place for many insects, including blood-sucking ones, and thirdly, sugar cane does not always contain a lot of sugar . At the peak of sugar content, work on plantations does not stop from early morning until late at night.

    After the Civil War, this source of labor disappeared, and the demand for sugar cane did not disappear. It was urgently necessary to find cheap labor, and it was found.

    It so happened that an acute shortage of workers coincided with the overcrowding of the prison – in 1867 it suddenly turned out that the number of those sentenced to imprisonment greatly exceeded the number of places available in the prison. The decision to give prisoners as workers to local farmers, to organize labor camps in which criminals would not sit on the neck of the state, but would bring income to both the state and farmers, suited everyone.

    Thus, slavery was revived in a new form in the Sugar Land, and not the cleanest page was inscribed in the history of the present city of Sugar Land, located in the very center of sugar extraction and sugar processing.

    The first labor camp was organized in the lower reaches of the Brazos River. Then the camps began to grow like mushrooms. The business was so profitable that at some point the state began to organize its own plantation camps, because there was no need to take care of the standardized working day, or the living conditions of prisoners, or their health, prisons constantly supplied new free labor.

    This went on for decades until, finally, the life of those sentenced to prison did not attract the attention of journalists. One article, two, three with a story about living conditions in labor camps, led to the fact that the public became interested in this. In 1910, the first legislative hearings were held, the government began to introduce laws defining the rules for the maintenance and work of prisoners.

    True, it took another 20 years to put an end to this type of slavery. Without free forced labor, sugarcane mining immediately became unprofitable. The new sugar factory, owned by Colonel Ed Cunningham, was also in serious condition. And here the Sugarland was very lucky. She was interested in a man who knew how to benefit from his enterprises by organizing good living conditions for workers. This entrepreneur was I. H. Kempner.

    The wealthy Kempner family is well known to those familiar with Galveston history, especially I. H. Kempner himself. It was he who rebuilt the city after the Great Galveston Storm of 1900, built a breakwater that still protects the island. Such a person not only turned a bankrupt enterprise into a profitable one, but also created a city that was loved by almost all of its inhabitants.

    It should be noted that at that time workers’ settlements were often the most unattractive place to live. By the time the plant was purchased, the name of the village was simply mocking, since the inhabitants did not call it otherwise as Hellhole of the Brazos. The first word is translated either as an infernal abyss, or as a den – one is worth the other. And there was reason to call him that. There were no streets in the village, it was flooded every now and then, there was only one house, and that one was public, there was no work left in connection with the ruin of the plant.

    Named Imperial Sugar, I. H. Kempner and W. T. Eldridge led the company. From the very beginning, the new owners decided that they could achieve success only by creating such working and living conditions that would help to educate and retain skilled workers, to create a succession of generations of workers. And they succeeded. They began by draining the land of the village, building streets, residential buildings, a school and a hospital. At a time when child labor was considered the most profitable, at Imperial Sugar it was strictly prohibited. Adults worked at the plant, and children went to school.

    From one of the most uninviting places to live in, Sugar Land has become the most advanced city in Texas. Both the city and the plant were on the rise back in 1967, when their founder and custodian died at the age of 94. True, by that time it was already clear that the independent life of the city did not last long – it was too close to the fast-growing Houston. The life of the plant was also not easy. There was no local sugar cane left for processing. The plant lived on imported raw materials, which were delivered first by ships, and then by rail.

    For a very long time, Sugar Land was the only sugar refinery in Texas located away from the port. It wasn’t until 2003 that this factory closed, leaving Sugarland without its own sugar, turning into a new, modern, highly attractive residential area in Houston.

    The most delicate eustoma

    So after all – a rose, a poppy or a bell? Neither one, nor the other, nor the third is eustoma, a flower that can give strength to overcome the distance, giving joy and fun and personifying innocence.

    Eustoma – a beautiful guest from Central America

    There are flowers that do not grow in our flower beds. They are non-Russian exotics, which are sweet and dear to the heart no less than the usual daisies and cornflowers. These “guests” beckon with their unusualness and nobility, beauty and at the same time modesty. And the first among them is not even an orchid, but a delicate eustoma, which won the hearts of Russians no less than a beautiful rose.

    Eustoma, or Lisianthus is such an exquisite and beautiful plant that it is simply impossible not to fall in love with this bright flower. A deep funnel-shaped calyx, covered with several petals, resembles a bell familiar from childhood. A terry riot of petals turns a flower into a real rose, and several layers of them – and a lush and catchy “poppy” will appear before you.

    Such metamorphosis is not a fantasy, it is a reality. More than 60 types of eustomas allow you to create magnificent bouquets and floristic compositions both in monochrome and with various types of flowers and greenery. But in any case, the eustoma will shine – it will not be overshadowed by its neighbors. Maybe that’s why a rare ordered flower delivery in Rostov-on-Don does without lisianthus.

    Up to 35 tender buds are placed on one stem 60 to 90 cm high. They open gradually, over 2-3 weeks. You will be able to admire pink, white, lilac or even flowers with the thinnest color fringing. Even one branch of eustoma will be an interior decoration and an unsurpassed gift. It is worth buying this delightful flower once and, believe me, you will forever remain his fan.

    Where legend ends and reality begins

    Hundreds of years ago, a proud tribe of Indians lived in the red mountains of Central America. The azure sky was their roof, and the vultures circled over their heads, as if protecting well-being and good luck. Severe mountains guarded civilians and closed the warpath.

    A beautiful daughter was born to the leader, who became a real decoration of the tribe. Many guys lost their heads with her black braids and magical dark blue eyes. Her fame spread throughout the region. And then one day the evil God of War decided to see if it was as good as despicable people say.

    And when he saw her, he immediately decided that only such a beauty would become his wife. But she firmly said, “No! I was born for peace and happiness, I give beauty and goodness. My children will not be touched by bloody hands, they will not be washed by mother’s tears, it would be better if they were not born than become children of war!

    God could not stand such an insult, and … killed a beautiful maiden. But in this place grew a delightful flower of the same divine blue color as the eyes of the unfortunate bride were. A modest flower with a drooping head was called the “Texas bluebell.” Lisianthus literally translates as a “beautifully speaking” flower. And the British could not resist the tender plant and gave it another amazing name – “rose of love.”

    Many hundreds of years have passed since then. The two-year-old eustoma was cultivated, gave it different shades and many petals, but the flower still personifies:

    Lisianthus is a symbol of love in the bride’s bouquet, a sign of respect in a gift to the boss , in a single branch on a romantic date, this is a timid confession of affection and incipient love. Here she is, eustoma. Beautiful and noble, timid as an innocent maiden and strong as her spirit.

    Don’t let the flowers wither!

    It doesn’t matter if you made an order for flowers delivery in Rostov or bought them in a floristic salon. Arriving home, do not rush to get rid of elegant packaging. Release the ends of the stems and cut them diagonally under running water. Moisten the cellophane sheet with some water and place the bouquet for a couple of hours in a cool place. So thin leaves and wonderful flowers will be saturated with water and wilting will slow down.

    But there are other basic rules that will prolong the freshness of lisianthus up to 2-3 weeks:

    • place flowers only in water at room temperature;
    • add a little sugar to the vase or put a silver coin or a ring;
    • thin flower leaves will not dry out if the bouquet is placed away from direct sunlight and heat;
    • the plant is sensitive to bacteria, so change the water daily, each time cutting the stems by 1. 5-2 cm;
    • to prevent rotting, remove the leaves that will be in the vase;
    • cut flower food can be added to water instead of silver or preservative sugar, which will allow all buds to bloom and slow down wilting for up to 7 days.

    Flowers, children of Flora. They exist in the world so that people enjoy their beauty, become kinder and more attentive to others. Of course, a bouquet of eutome or a flower arrangement, presented on the threshold of the maternity hospital, on the anniversary of the chef or on the children’s birthday is a great addition to the gift.

    But when was the last time you bought flowers for nothing? For yourself or for mom, for no reason? For a wife or husband, girlfriend or colleague? No need to wait for a chance, please yourself as a donor with an elegant sprig of eustoma and the unexpected attention of loved ones. Give flower joy to someone simply from a generous soul.

    Flowers are not only for women. Men love them no less. They are just in no hurry to talk about it, but they also need beauty. So give each other flowers. They are proof of attention and love, respect and fidelity, devotion and understanding.

    Your flowers will stand for a long time – proven methods

    Any representative of the fair sex experiences a sea of positive emotions and delight when she is presented with beautiful flowers. But, unfortunately, after a couple of days, the original flower arrangement begins to lose its appeal.

    So, how to make flowers last longer and make you happy? After all, you know where to buy beautiful bouquets, and flower delivery in Odessa will help in this.

    Tips for making flowers last longer in a vase

    In cold weather it is necessary to allow the flowers to acclimate a little. Therefore, when you bring them home or to a warm room, put the bouquet and do not unfold it for about 20-30 minutes. Then carefully cut the bottom of the stem about 1. 5-3 centimeters with a knife or pruner, but not with scissors.

    Now let’s look at how to make flowers last longer.

    • Carefully cut the stems only with a sharp knife and in a diagonal line. It is forbidden to do this with scissors, as they greatly jam the cut.
    • Remove the bottom leaves before placing your bouquet in a vase.
    • In order for the flowers to stand longer, it is necessary to place the vase in a place where there is no sunlight.
    • Place the vase only in bright rooms.
    • The cooler the room, the longer the bouquet will stand.
    • Also, in order for the flowers to stand in a vase for a long time, if possible, add a little ammonium solution to the water. If ammonium is not available, then use sugar. Add a teaspoon to the vase.
    • Do not forget to regularly spray the bouquet with a spray bottle (foliage, not buds!). This will help keep the flowers fresh.
    • The main thing is to regularly change the water and wash the vase.

    Features of some colors

    Now we will look at the features of different colors. For example:

    • Tulip . Before putting the flowers in a vase, the stem must be trimmed. Do not pour a lot of water into the vase, no more than 10cm. If the tulip begins to wither, it is difficult to revive it. Buy semi-green tulips with small buds – these will last a very long time. We use these in our bouquets;
    • Lilac. We cut the stems and immediately lower the bouquet for a couple of minutes in ethyl alcohol. After we remove the leaves and put the bouquet in a vase;
    • Rose. Before putting into a deep vase filled with very cold water, remove thorns and excess leaves, the stem should be bare in the water. You can add aspirin or analgin to the water. Change the water every day, do not put a vase of roses in a draft and near fruits;
    • Chrysanthemums. Cut and place in a small amount of water. At the first sign of wilting, dip the tips of the stems in boiling water for 30 seconds, then return to a vase with pure water. In half a day, your chrysanthemums will be reborn 🙂
    • Alstroemeria. Likes small amounts of warm water, daily stem cutting and a clean vase.
    • Eustoma (lisianthus). Stems immersed in water must be stripped of leaves. Eustoma is a multi-flowered plant, the buds do not bloom at the same time, so that the bouquet has a fresh look, dead ones must be safely removed.
    • Lily. If there are a lot of closed buds on the branch and you want them to bloom faster, place a bouquet of lilies in warm water. Remove faded buds. If the lily smells strongly, then it is necessary to remove the stamens.
    • Astra. To make the asters last longer, it is necessary to cut the short stems with leaves and put the flowers in a small vase, then add a little vodka or ethyl alcohol to the water. This will help prolong the life of the asters;
    • Callas. Cut off the lowest part of the flower stem and immediately sprinkle it with regular kitchen salt. You should not put callas in a vase with some other flowers.

    If you properly care for the bouquet, change the water daily and prevent the stems from rotting, it will easily stand for more than two weeks. Let your bouquet stand for a long time and please the eye!

      With good care, eustoma will last more than a week in a vase.

      In appearance, the Lisianthus flower resembles rose buds; it has rightfully earned the respect of specialists for a long time.
      Lisianthus flower is suitable both for complementing a bouquet of other flowers, and for making a homogeneous bouquet. Various color options of the flower make it very versatile. So, white flowers will be a great addition to a wedding bouquet, pink flowers can be used as a sign of attention to a lady of the heart, and bright purple flowers will perfectly enliven and refresh the atmosphere in the office, at work or at home. The range of use of Lisianthus is not limited to the listed options. Thanks to the most diverse forms and colors, the flower can be used for any whimsical taste.
      Delivery period : all year round

      The history of eustoma is very interesting. It begins in the expanses of the North American Great Plains. The Indians loved this unusual blue-lilac flower. They believed: if a few petals of the blue bell, as they called it, are added to the drink, then it will give strength on a long journey.

      This plant was noticeable, and there is nothing surprising in the fact that it was quickly discovered by Europeans who arrived in America and transported to Europe, where professional botanists began to study it.

      Carl Linnaeus had no doubts about his work, calling it the sublime gentian (gentiana exaltata). The next scientist who drew attention to the new plant was Salisbury. It was he who proved that the Indian bell is not at all a gentian, as Linnaeus believed, and singled out the plant in a separate row, which he called Eustoma. A little later, the director of the Botanical Gardens in Kew, Sir William Jackson Hooker, took up the study. He described the plant as new, called Russell’s Lisianthus. But here he made a great mistake, attributing eustoma to the genus of tropical Brazilian plants. So the plant got 2 names: eustoma and lisianthus. This mistake had great consequences: they figured out the systematics, but the wrong name stuck to the plant forever – in many countries it is still called lisianthus.

      In nature, eustoma grows in the lowlands of rivers. It is a squat plant with greyish green leaves and blue to purple flowers.

      The Japanese made a great contribution to the cultivation of eustoma. It was found that there are white and pink eustoma. Terry and large-flowered varieties appeared, tall for cutting and short for growing in pots, varieties with two-color inflorescences: red, light yellow, green. The flower turned out to be convenient for transportation, spectacular in bouquets and long-lived in vases. With good care, eustoma lasts in a vase for more than a week. Before putting the eustoma into the water, it should be cut, remove all the leaves that may be in the water. The water should be changed every 2-3 days, and the cut should be renewed just as often.

      Eustoma is still a little known plant in our country, but let’s hope that the situation will change for the better soon. It is so original and unexpected that it is gaining more and more popularity among florists in bouquets and compositions. Eustoma looks amazing in wedding bouquets and boutonnieres, baskets and just in gift bouquets.

      Eustoma storage

      For “professional” florists:
      Eustoma is not whimsical when cut and has good viability “up to two weeks” subject to certain rules:
      – The optimum storage temperature in the refrigerator is 5-8C
      – Before putting the flowers on the water, cut the stems a few centimeters.
      – Remove the lower leaves from the stem to prevent them from falling into the water and as a result of rotting.
      – Place the flowers in a clean container with cold, clean water.
      – Make sure that the flowers do not become wet due to high humidity in the refrigerator compartment. This can lead to rot on the flowers and leaves.
      – The use of various preservatives will prevent water pollution by bacteria, clogging of blood vessels and, as a result, extend the shelf life of the flower.

      Customer:
      – Trim stems slightly and remove lower leaves.
      Place the flowers in cold water.
      – Adding cut flower food will have a positive effect on the life of eustoma in a vase. Flowers will open more beautifully and last longer. Even the smallest buds will open. Adding top dressing will double the life of eustoma.
      – It is necessary to change the water regularly as eustoma is very susceptible to bacteria.
      – Due to the thinness of the leaves, eustoma evaporates moisture very quickly, so do not place the flower in the sun or near heat sources.
      Eustoma belongs to the Gentianaceae family, like its close relative gentian.

      In nature, eustoma grows in Central America and Mexico, in warm climates.
      Breeders in Japan and South Korea have bred many varieties of Lisianthus – both with simple bell-shaped flowers, and with double, reminiscent of elegant roses.

      Since eustoma is a heat-loving perennial plant, in harsh climates Lisianthus is usually grown as a houseplant and in greenhouses for cutting. And in the open field, eustoma is grown in our country as an annual.

      Sowing Lisianthus for seedlings

      Please note that eustoma has a long period of growth from germination to flowering. Therefore, in order for the lisitanthus seedlings to bloom in the garden in July, it is necessary to start germinating the seeds already in winter (the latest sowing date for eustoma is January).

      I start sowing eustoma seeds for seedlings as early as November so that my lisianthus will bloom in the garden from the end of June until frost.

      Sow lisianthus in low (no more than 4-5 cm high), but wide jars with holes for excess water to flow out.
      At the bottom of each container I put fine expanded clay or crushed foam.

      To grow seedlings of all my plants, I prepare the same substrate: I mix leaf humus (I bring it from the dacha), any purchased peat soil and add a lot of river sand.
      Thoroughly mixed substrate must be steamed.

      Eustoma seeds are laid out on a leveled surface of a sifted, loose, moistened substrate.
      I do not sprinkle lisianthus seeds, because they are very small.

      After sowing eustoma, I close the jars with cut-off plastic bottles, leaving the neck of the bottles open.
      It is possible to germinate Lisianthus with a closed stopper of “greenhouse” bottles, but then you need to lift the bottle daily to access the seeds of fresh air.

      I put jars with eustoma seeds in a warm place.

      Caring for eustoma seedlings

      I illuminate eustoma crops with fluorescent lamps. These lamps work for me for 12-16 hours a day, illuminating seedlings. If you do not have any additional lighting for crops and seedlings in the winter, then you should not grow seedlings in winter – without lighting, tender shoots and young plants will disappear.

      Eustoma seeds germinate for a long time. Some seedlings appear after 40 days. The stalks of seedlings are so tender and thin that it is even difficult to see them at first.
      I carefully sprinkle sifted calcined sand around the tiny seedlings of Lisianthus so that the seedlings do not get sick with the “black leg”.

      Another feature in growing eustoma seedlings is the obligatory maintenance of a favorable temperature regime.
      The air temperature must not exceed 25 degrees. Because in Lisianthus seedlings at a higher content temperature, only a rosette of leaves is formed, and the main shoot will not grow (which means they will not bloom).

      The most difficult thing in caring for young eustoma plants is to water them very carefully, without flooding them and drying out the substrate. So before planting them in the garden in May, a lot of time passes, and busy flower growers do not always have enough time to check the soil moisture in cups with lisianthus seedlings, then the risk of drying out the substrate is high. In this case, the eustoma seedlings begin to wither and fall. Once it can still be saved, but the second time the plants will not have enough strength to rise. Therefore, I do not sow lisianthus in pure peat.
      When growing eustoma seedlings in a substrate with an admixture of heavy soil (clay or chernozem) and with the addition of vermiculite, the chances of success are significantly increased.

      I regularly spray the growing seedlings of Lisianthus with solutions of growth stimulants (epin, zircon), potassium permanganate.
      Every two weeks I feed the seedlings with a weak solution of fertilizers.

      Now you can buy ready-made eustoma seedlings on the market in the spring at a very low price (compared to how much effort it takes to grow seedlings).

      Caring for lisianthus in the garden

      I am planting lisianthus seedlings in my country house at the end of May.
      Medium-sized and tall varieties of eustoma (above 40 cm) will not withstand strong winds, so it is advisable to tie such seedlings to a support.

      I choose a place in the bright sun for growing eustoma. First, I cover the planted plants with spunbond or the same bottles without corks, but slightly smeared with earth, so that the sun does not burn.

      In some lisianthus bushes, before flowering, you can pinch the top of the main shoot. Of course, after this, the flowering of the eustoma seedling will be delayed, but pinching will stimulate the formation of many side shoots, and then there will be more flowers.

      In the photo: blooming eustoma

      After the first wave of flowering, I always feed eustoma seedlings with complex fertilizer.

      Another important point of care for those flower growers who decide to grow eustoma in their garden. As soon as almost all the flowers in the bouquets of the first flowering wave open, I cut off the entire bouquet with flowers. I leave “hemp” from the peduncle about 10 cm long from the ground.
      After some time, new shoots with buds form in the eustoma, and the flowering of the plant is repeated in the fall.

      Lisianthus blooming has a big advantage – the freshness of the cut remains in the bouquet for a long time. Especially if you first put the eustoma flower stalks in plain water, and after two hours add a little citric acid to the water. Well, of course, you need to change this solution in a vase daily.

      Possible problems with eustoma seedlings in an apartment

      When growing eustoma seedlings in an apartment, seedlings may develop botrytis (or gray rot) from waterlogging of the substrate and uncultivated land. The first sign of this disease is that the leaves curl up, a gray coating appears on the underside of the leaves. This disease can appear in Lisianthus and in the garden.

      If the air in the apartment is very dry and the soil has not been well steamed, then spider mites may appear on the leaves of eustoma. Especially if indoor roses grow on the same windowsill.
      It is imperative to fight the spider mite on Lisianthus, otherwise the seedlings will not survive until planting in open ground.

      When diseases and pests appear on eustoma, plants are sprayed with solutions of appropriate chemicals.

      Seed formation in garden eustoma

      Eustoma easily sets seeds in the garden, if the very first blooming flowers are left on the seedling, and the rest of the faded flowers are removed. Then high-quality seeds are formed at the first flowers.

      These freshly harvested eustoma seeds germinate very well and quickly in the spring (not at all like the purchased ones). However, in Lisianthus grown from such seeds, a large splitting of characters is observed. As a result, seedlings may produce flowers with a grayish-dirty color of the petals, not at all similar to the flowers of hybrid seedlings.
      Because of this, I did not leave faded eustoma flowers for seeds. Since growing Lisianthus seedlings requires a lot of labor, and the result can be disappointing.

      Do not buy eustoma seedlings in autumn

      Eustoma winters badly in the house. It is unlikely that you will be able to keep the eustoma seedlings bought in the fall in the apartment until spring. And heat-loving lisianthus growing in open ground will disappear even under good winter shelter.

      Lisianthus bushes already blooming in pots can be seen in summer and autumn.
      I tried to dig eustoma out of the garden in autumn, transplant it into a pot and put it in the cellar. And some plants in pots left in the apartment for the winter.
      Lisianthus bushes kept in winter. But in the second year they were weak, bloomed little (or even did not bloom at all) – just one disappointment.

      Even with careful care, eustoma blooms lush and beautiful not every summer in the open ground of the middle lane. Apparently, it still succeeds better in greenhouses, where there is no wind and relatively constant humidity.
      But lovers of exotic flowers should definitely try to grow lisianthus in their garden – this plant will give you an unusual beautiful bouquet.

      Lisianthus how to care for a bouquet

      Lukas Jansen is a Dutch florist who founded the FLOWERACADEMY.NL academy this year. Lucas began teaching in 1984. There were many bright moments in his life, including the creation of the longest floristic composition (1554 m) and the largest flower painting (16 × 8 m), and both of these works are rightfully listed in the Guinness Book of Records. From 19For 90 years, the florist has visited Japan, Korea, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, the USA and many other countries. “The most remarkable thing is that it is possible to create universal works, finding common features in different floristic schools, so that the compositions are accepted with a bang in any country in the world,” says Lucas. Using the advice of an eminent master, we offer you recommendations for preserving the freshness of flowers.

      Flower care is a key issue in the daily work of a florist. The quality of the goods always comes first when creating a composition that meets the requirements of buyers, because if the work is assembled from bad flowers, then it is hardly worth expecting good reviews from both the florist and the salon itself. When choosing a material, attention should be paid to the freshness, color and shape of the flower. Oddly enough, but these evaluation criteria are quite subjective, because if two or more florists look at the same bunch of flowers, their opinion about the quality does not always coincide. It depends primarily on how much the storage conditions in the salon will help prolong the life of flowers, what exactly the florist will use them for – for a wedding bouquet, gift composition, mourning wreath – and on many other factors. It is also important where the point of sale is located, what is the wealth of buyers in this area. Undoubtedly, only one thing – all flowers, even of excellent quality, need care immediately after entering the salon. There are a number of simple rules to follow:

      • When choosing flowers at a wholesaler, make sure that they are intact and that their stems are not broken or bent.

      • Flowers should be unpacked immediately.

      • The stem of each flower must be cut diagonally with a sharp florist’s knife.

      • All lower leaves are removed.

      • Buckets or vases must be disinfected before use.

      • Water for flowers must be clean.

      • Special food for cut flowers helps keep them fresh.

      • 90% of flowers are stored for a long time in a cool place, preferably in a floristic refrigerator.

      • Do not store flowers near products that can release ethylene (fruits, vegetables), as well as near exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke.

      It should always be remembered that with careless handling it is very easy to turn a good material into a worthless one, and poor-quality flowers, in the vast majority of cases, will not be helped by any nutrients. So what does it say about the freshness of a product? Its appearance and “internal”. The first criterion includes what is visible to the naked eye: wilting, deformation of the stem or bud, uniformity of the floristic material. To the second – the sensitivity of flowers to long-term transportation, to the lack of water (even for a short time), susceptibility to flower bacteria and other diseases.

      Why do flowers wither? Each flower has its own ripening period, so it is very important to know at what point it is necessary to cut, but there is one more nuance – in hot summer, flowers are always cut earlier. When purchasing flowers, one should also take into account such a moment as their further use. For example, for ritual bouquets, you can take flowers with already open buds, since these compositions should not be durable. When the buyer comes to the salon to buy flowers for himself at home and put them in a vase, he needs to be offered the freshest, even perhaps a little unripe flowers, so that they please the person longer. Unripe flowers need energy to open the bud, so it is important to use a special floristic dressing, which contains sucrose and antibacterial substances. If you do not follow this simple rule, then the life of flowers will be reduced by several days.

      We suggest you familiarize yourself with the main points of homogeneity that you should pay attention to.

      FLOWER MATURITY

      All flowers in a supply should be of the same maturity, ideally no buds more open or closed than adjacent ones. The maximum allowable percentage of heterogeneity is 5%. If it is higher, then a notice is drawn up that the flowers are not uniform, and this significantly affects the cost of the goods.

      Each stem in a pack of 10-20 flowers must have a certain length, because if one of the stems is shorter, then this flower may not reach the water.

      The number of stems and buds in the package must match! Flowers such as roses are usually sorted by special machines, while tulips and lilies are sorted by hand.

      Some types of flowers are sold by weight. Working, for example, with chrysanthemums, due to the variety of varieties, it is very difficult to say unequivocally whether it is a lot or a little – 5 stems. Usually flowers such as gypsophila, freesia, limonium, aster and others are sold by weight.

      Only in rare cases, florists need curved stems – when the idea of work implies such lines. As a rule, straight and strong stems are more in demand in flower shops, which cannot be ignored when purchasing flowers.

      Different shades of color and size of buds, damage to some of the flowers during transportation – all this must be paid attention to when purchasing flowers. The heterogeneity of the material can adversely affect sales in the salon.

      Several times I came across this story. I buy roses at the morning flower market (on the street), I cut the flowers at home, rejoicing at how fresh they are, just lovely. But when I make an order in the evening, some of them already have darkening petals. Have to choose the best even though everyone was the best in the morning :confused:
      Question – what’s the matter? maybe they froze on the street? or from what? (buying flowers at the bases, this has never happened, only at the market, that’s why I associate it with the cold)

      How to properly care for them at home, if the order is every other day, for example?

      General recommendations for caring for cut flowers

      Cut flowers are short-lived, they fade relatively quickly, and therefore require special, careful care. In addition to home care, the life expectancy of cut plants is also influenced by growing conditions, agricultural technology, watering during the growing season, and illumination. In cut plants, the normal vegetation cycle is interrupted, they lose their support, their source of nutrition. There are two main reasons for the loss of freshness in cut plants, namely, they can fade and wither. The reasons for the withering of flowers are different and depend, among other things, on the plant itself, on its nature. In addition, the cause of wilting is evaporation, which causes a sharp decrease in moisture in the tissues of the plant, and this is the loss that can only be replenished for a short time. This applies to all flowers regardless of the time of year. At the same time, in winter and early spring, flowers grown in greenhouses wither especially quickly, as they were not prepared for new conditions of detention – in rooms that are too dry and warm for them with central heating. Most often, flowers wither due to a long stay without water, as well as difficulties in its absorption – not by roots, but by stems.
      A wilted flower after proper care can restore its former freshness for a while. In any case, wilting should be prevented, as it has a harmful effect on the flower – even if it is revived later. In a wilted flower, its safety worsens, and life is shortened accordingly. Each plant has its own wilting point, when its further revival becomes impossible: the flower ages or fades. This process cannot be stopped, but it can be slowed down.
      There are certain methods that allow you to achieve a longer “life” of cut plants.
      If a bouquet is bought in a store, then it is necessary to bring it to the house, wrapping it in paper or plastic wrap. If you’re cutting flowers in the garden, wrap the ends of the stems with a damp cloth, damp paper, or even moss, then wrap with plastic wrap. The bouquet should not be exposed to direct sunlight and drafts.
      Do not abruptly transfer bouquets from cool to warm air. Sudden and rapid changes in temperature can cause flowers to wither quickly. First of all, this rule applies to the cold seasons. When bringing flowers from the street into the house, do not rush to immediately remove the protective material from them and put them in water. Some strive to do this as quickly as possible in order to “warm up” the flowers, but the effect is just the opposite: the flower must adapt to new conditions, gradually get used to them. The less stress he will experience and the longer he will stand in a vase, while maintaining freshness and color. Therefore, when you bring flowers home, leave them in the hallway for a while, because this is the coolest place in the house. After that, you can process the stems of flowers using special techniques that can increase the water-absorbing properties. Moreover, flowers bought already in a bouquet are very often dehydrated and especially require a sufficient amount of water. To do this, refresh the sections by holding the flowers under a gentle stream of water. Remove the bottom leaves, place the flowers in warm water. On soft-stemmed plants, make a long, oblique cut to help them absorb water better.

      If there is green shrubs, then this component also needs to be properly processed. Branches cut from large bushes that have a hard, bark-covered stem, before being placed in a vase with water, must be cut (the cut must be oblique), remove the lower processes, make an incision 2-3 cm in the lower part of the stem, remove in this place bark and split the stem. Sometimes the tip of the stem can be crushed with a hammer or knife handle.

      For proper care of cut flowers, you need to have the appropriate equipment and materials: a sharp knife, a razor, secateurs, candles (better colored), a spray bottle, a watering can with a long spout, a small nail file, adhesive tape, wire, thin, weak rubber bands, sugar, salt, charcoal, ammonia, glycerin, vinegar, alum, citric acid, potassium nitrates.
      In the future, no matter what flowers you put in a vase of water, check them regularly and add fresh water – this applies to any flowers. Especially during the warm season or if your centrally heated home is very hot. Keep the water in the vase clean. Bad water is often caused by leaf rot and causes flowers to wilt quickly. Ammonium solution added to water, disinfectants, fertilizers for cut flowers, as well as ordinary granulated sugar in a small amount will also help extend the life of cut flowers.
      Flowers love bright rooms. Do not place cut flowers near radiators, stoves, heaters, or in direct sunlight. It is undesirable that there are drafts in the room. The temperature in the room also plays an important role: at a temperature of 18-19 ° C, flowers last longer than at a temperature of 22 ° C. At night, it is recommended to put the flowers in a cooler place (from +10 to +15 ° C) or wrap them tightly in paper and immerse them in a bucket of water.
      Plants with multiple flowers per stem will live longer if dead flowers are removed as soon as possible. This will help the new buds to fully open.
      Flowers with long stamens live longer when the stamens are removed. You can remove the stamens with your fingers, and if the flower is very tender, cut them off with scissors. If you like long stamens and don’t want to remove them, you don’t have to follow this advice.
      Spraying the bouquet with water will give it freshness and fragrance. Spraying your bouquet regularly will help keep it fresh for a long time.

      To revive slightly wilted flowers, renew the cut under water, spray the flower from above, cover with damp paper; immerse the flowers for a few minutes in warm water at a temperature of 30-40 ° C. Heat will expand the vessels, it will be easier for the stems to absorb water, and the flowers will restore freshness.
      To revitalize heavily wilted flowers, a method of treating them in hot water is used. With this method, the sections of the stems should be renewed under water, the flowers and leaves should be wrapped in paper or placed in a plastic bag, after which the stems should be placed in water at a temperature of 80-90 ° C to a depth of two to three centimeters. Thick stems are placed in water for twenty to thirty seconds, thin stems for ten seconds. Leaves that are below the water level should be removed. Then wrap the flowers tightly with paper and place them deep in cold water. Especially often this method is used to restore freshness to heavily wilted hyacinths, chrysanthemums, roses, dahlias, zinnias, shrubs.
