A Harris County free child care program is set to start, and advocates say it’s needed because child care centers across the state are in crisis.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Harris County free child care program is set to start in days, and advocates say it couldn’t come at a better time because the child care centers across the state are in crisis.

Sending your kid to child care is too much for some parents.

“If you want to go to a better place and a better area, it’s going to be $300 and up per child,” Paola Diaz explained.

Diaz said child care costs are why she’s at home spending summer days at the library instead of work.

“It keeps you from trying to work, or do other stuff around,” Diaz said. “It is hard.”

Harris County is looking to help. This month, an Early REACH program starts. The county is using $26 million in federal funds to cover child care costs. If you live in the county, have a kid under age four, and meet the income requirements, you could receive free child care.

“There are so many child care deserts around Harris County and we want to provide not only free child care, but high quality child care,” BakerRipley spokesperson Frederick Goodall said.

Advocates said this is a statewide problem. Texas Care for Children said a family of four spends nearly $20,000 a year in child care.

During the pandemic, the state spent millions on this issue. It’s funding that has dried up.

During this past session, advocates lawmakers didn’t do enough to fund child care.

“That funding would’ve supported the continuation of stabilization grants that the state launched during the pandemic that were critical to keeping programs open,” Texas Care for Children early learning policy director David Feigen said.

Advocates said it’s not only the cost of child care, but workers’ pay. On average, they make $11 an hour.

Without assistance, it could cause facilities to close. It’s a problem they say has already caused child care deserts, mainly in low-income communities.

“It means they have to find alternative arrangements for their kids and for some kids that means arrangements that are not high quality or children are stuck in front of a television screen rather than getting read to be a teacher and engaging with other kids,” Feigen explained.

Without work, parents aren’t spending money. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said Texas loses $9 billion a year in revenue because of parents not working. That’s money that could go to infrastructure, teachers, and other state projects, which is why advocates say programs like the one the county will launch this month are important for us all.

The teacher, who released a six-year-old girl with someone else’s grandfather from a kindergarten on Krylenko Street, was brought to disciplinary responsibility. This was reported to Fontanka on July 18 in the press service of the Nevsky District Administration.

“An internal pedagogical investigation was carried out into the incident. The teacher has been disciplined. The fact that the employees of the kindergarten, working on the first day on duty, were not familiar with the parents of the child is not a mitigating circumstance, ”the administration said.

Teachers were also given additional briefing on how to comply with the safety measures for the stay of pupils in duty groups.

Incident, we recall, occurred the day before. Grandfather accidentally took home not his granddaughter. The namesake of the girl was handed over to the man, and she allegedly recognized him as her grandfather. While the man was sorting out and walking back, the parents of the first child had already managed to get scared. The kindergartener was reported missing by calling 112, and the police arrived at the scene and inspected the surroundings. After almost 2 hours, the girl was returned. Thus ended the first day of work of kindergarten No. 27 in the duty format. Nobody filed a police report.

— I “liked” the kindergarten so much that one day, when my mother was late for work and told me to walk from the gate to the group on my own, I reached the entrance, hid around the corner, waited for my mother to hide, and stomped home. Dad at home, of course, was surprised, but he didn’t betray me,” said Svetlana, an E1.RU reader. – And the best smell of childhood is the smell of my mother, who came to pick me up in the kindergarten in the evening.

Pros:
This is a nice clean facility.
There are very nice teachers/daycare workers that treat kids like they are their own.
They plan fun activities and have fun little field trips. (Zoo, parks, pumpkin patch, etc.)
Cons:
-I wish there were not TV’s in every room and that the TV was not on all the time, I believe state regulations are 5 hours or less a week now and it seems to be on more than that.
-It would be nice to get a paper or some sort of update at the end of each day so I know what my children are doing. Did my children nap, what are they learning about, did they eat their meals, use the bathroom/how many diaper changes, etc. I know it may take some time to track but a few other facilities do this and it is a nice touch. I always try to ask these things but sometimes it is hard to get all the answers, especially with morning vs afternoon teachers and it is hard to keep the teacher from the kids at pickup to talk and get all the information.
I would recommend this place for sure as it seems like a nice and safe environment but there are just a few areas for improvement….

Caring for a newborn baby in the first months of life at home

The arrival of a newborn in the family will be a new experience for everyone, and in the first months it is necessary to take special care of the baby. Proper care of the newborn, a balanced, healthy diet, hygiene measures and sleep patterns are crucial for the overall development of the child. It is especially pedantic to follow all the recommendations in the first month of life, when the baby is actively adapting to new living conditions, the umbilical wound heals, breastfeeding is being established, and a regimen is being formed.

Care of a newborn on the first day

Immediately after the baby is born, the baby is placed on the mother’s stomach and then applied to the breast. This is necessary so that he receives the first drops of colostrum necessary for his health. It is a thick yellowish liquid rich in nutrients and immune components. It saturates the baby and gives him protection from infections, helps to populate the intestines with beneficial microflora. After some time, the doctor will examine the baby, and the nurse, under his leadership, will conduct the first toilet of the newborn. Cheese grease will be removed from his skin, his eyes will be cleaned, special drops will be instilled into them to prevent inflammation.

The baby will be swaddled and given to the mother, the baby will be with her until the discharge. From the first days, the maternity hospital staff teaches the mother the basics and rules of caring for a newborn. This will help you not to worry and do everything right after the hospital, when you return home.

Newborn Care

Caring for an infant under 28 days old is the hardest part of the journey, but following our newborn care tips makes it easier for parents to understand what parents should be aware of, what schedules they should follow, what they should do, and what they shouldn’t worry about.

Bathing in the first days of life

Bathing is not necessary during the first days of life. It may seem strange – after all, cleanliness is the best way to keep yourself hygienic and healthy. However, in the maternity hospital and the first 1-2 days after discharge, the baby is not washed, as he retains a coating on his entire body, which acts as a protective layer. This creamy white substance, called Vernix caseosa, is made up of sweat gland oils. It acts as a protective layer against all bacteria and keeps your baby’s sensitive skin moisturized. Within 7-10 days, the white coating slowly peels off. After that, you can bathe the baby.

Umbilical cord care

An important part of caring for a newborn at home is the handling of the umbilical cord. When taking a bath, it is important to keep the umbilical cord as dry as possible. But do not seal the residue, when bathing, you just need to gently rinse the skin around. After the umbilical cord has fallen off, special attention should be paid to the wound until it is completely healed.

Your pediatrician or nurse will tell you how to take care of the umbilical wound area at home during your first visit (post-discharge visit).

Genital Care

Your baby needs to change their diaper frequently and have their genitals cleaned regularly. At 1 month of life, you need to change the diaper every 2 hours and immediately after the baby has gone big. After removing the diaper, you need to rinse the perineum with warm water and after that keep this area dry. For girls, wash your genitals from front to back to avoid bacterial infection. Boys can wash in any direction. After washing, gently blot the skin folds with a soft cotton towel, treat all the folds with a protective cream and put on a clean diaper.

Scalp Care Features

One of the most delicate parts of a newborn is the scalp. The bones of the skull have not yet fully fused, and there are weak spots on the head called fontanelles that form during childbirth. In addition, the skin on the scalp is quite thin and easily scratched. It is important not to rub it too hard while shampooing your hair.

If milk crusts form, massage your head with shampoo or baby oil and then wash off any crusts that have come off while washing. It is not necessary to peel off the crusts during home care for the scalp of newborns, this will only increase their appearance.

Skin care

Your baby’s skin is soft and you just need to moisturize it regularly with a good lotion. Babies usually develop pimples on their cheeks, nose, forehead, and cheeks in the early days. This is because the mother’s hormones are still circulating in the baby’s body. No need to worry, in a few days everything will pass. You should clean your face with a cotton pad with warm water without squeezing out the pimples. Because the baby had been in the womb for so long, his skin was highly hydrated. When a child is exposed to the environment, the skin naturally becomes dry. During the first month of life, slight peeling is possible, which disappears on its own.

Wash your eyes daily with a damp cotton pad, starting from the inner corner and then to the outer corner. A separate blank disc should be used for each eye.

The child’s ears are self-cleaning. It is important not to use a damp cloth or cotton inside the ear canal. This can lead to blockages and inflammation.

Feeding advice

Because your baby’s stomach is small, he only eats a certain amount of food and will need energy again in a few hours. For the first six weeks, it is important to let your baby breastfeed whenever he wants to. Trying to schedule a feeding too early can backfire as it disrupts milk production. Don’t worry about getting enough milk – the more your baby eats, the more you produce.

The baby needs to latch on properly to get enough milk so that the mother’s nipples do not get hurt or hurt. Before putting him to your chest, lay him on his side so that his stomach is directly opposite yours. Then move your nipple near your mouth so that it opens wide; make sure he takes the entire nipple and a significant portion of your areola into his mouth.

Basic sleep advice

Young infants should always be placed to sleep on their back, not on their side or stomach. At first, newborns sleep a lot – from 16 to 17 hours a day – but this sleep is interrupted every hour or two by small periods of wakefulness. In the first weeks, the baby usually wakes up just long enough to be fed and changed. Since the baby will also be awake for short periods during the night, which will inevitably disrupt your sleep, in order to stay well rested, you should make sure to sleep with your baby at night and during the day.

It is important for babies to sleep on their tummy during the day. It helps to strengthen the back muscles and relax the muscles, reduce colic.

Coping with crying

Children often cry at an early age, but often there are quite clear reasons for this. What they are – parents learn to recognize during the first weeks of life.

  • Rule out obvious potential causes: check if the baby’s diapers are dirty, if he is too hot or cold, if his diaper or clothes are crushing.
  • Recreate a womb-like environment by wrapping your baby securely in a blanket with arms and legs swaddled. Then hold it firmly on your left side or stomach and gently rock it, making soft hissing or throat sounds.
  • Walking, relaxing music, rocking in the arms or in the cradle, stroller helps to calm down. (Babies love to move!)

First of all, keep your cool! If you are tense, your child will be tense too. Remember that babies sometimes just cry – and this will pass.

most important care tips. The best article-reminder for moms and dads

Tips for young mothers on caring for a newborn baby: what to prepare for the birth of a baby, how to care for, feed, walk, bathe, put to bed. Answers to the most popular questions of moms.

Contents

Moms who have given birth to their first child are sometimes in terrible confusion: preparation for the arrival of the baby and caring for him raise so many questions that you simply do not know where to run and what to do. Worry and despair are useless here, because the newly-made parents already have enough reasons for worrying. This article contains the main rules and tips for caring for a newborn, so it can be safely used as an instruction on all issues of concern to parents.

Preparing a dowry for a child

There is a superstition that you can’t buy anything for an unborn child, so some mothers don’t prepare dowry for their babies on purpose. These are just prejudices. For future parents and all relatives, it is a real pleasure to go shopping, choosing tiny hats and vests. Preparing a “dowry” for a future mother helps to tune in to imminent motherhood. In addition, when the baby is born, there will be such a turmoil that it will be simply impossible for the baby to calmly choose, wash and stack things in piles. So, what you need to prepare for the appearance of crumbs into the world:

  • Diapers (In total, you will need about 20-25 of them. The ratio of thin and warm diapers is determined based on what time of the year the baby is born. By the way, knitted diapers are very convenient: they are very soft, stretch well and fit the body).
  • Blouses or bodysuits (Unfastened vests are no longer relevant, because they are not comfortable. It is best to buy several blouses with a button or ties and several bodysuits).
  • One-piece overalls (Insulated overalls will be enough for the first time, but you can buy several thin ones).
  • Hats (Knitted hats without ties are the most convenient. 2 thin ones and one warm one are enough).
  • Socks (Soft knitted socks are useful even in the warm season. You can safely buy 4-5 pairs).
  • Warm wool blanket.
  • Flannelette blanket or plaid.

Some purchases can be left for later and, if necessary, entrusted to grandmothers. These include, for example, mittens – anti-scratches. Not all children resist cutting their nails, so mittens may not come in handy. Another purchase from this series is a pillow. Babies up to a year old can sleep without a pillow, using a folded diaper instead.

In addition to things, you need to prepare a first aid kit for the arrival of the baby:

  • Baby oil for treating wrinkles (you can do with sterile vegetable oil), baby cream;
  • Pipette, hydrogen peroxide, vial of brilliant green for the treatment of the umbilical wound;
  • Zinc ointment for rashes and diaper rash;
  • Bathing herbs, potassium permanganate;
  • Vapor tube, cherry-stone heating pad, carminatives (Bobotik, Sub-Simplex, etc. (see all anti-colic products)) in case of colic;
  • Wet wipes, cotton pads, sterile cotton, spout rinse – for hygiene procedures.
  • Antipyretic (better in suppositories), antihistamine (Fenistil) (see all preparations for fever).
  • Absorbent diapers and diapers for newborns.

Depending on the situation, it will be possible to purchase diaper cream and powder.

Something for Mom

After discharge from the hospital, mom will also need some things to buy in advance:

  • Bepanthen Cracked Nipple Cream.
  • Absorbent breast pads.
  • Comfortable nursing underwear.
  • Sanitary napkins (either special postpartum or normal but with maximum absorbency).
  • Postpartum bandage (for better recovery of the abdominal muscles).
  • Breast pads for feeding (what are they for and why).
  • Breast pump (how to choose and pump).

If everything is ready for the appearance in everyday life, it’s time to figure out and master the basic procedures that a young mother will have to perform daily and more than once.

Morning toilet: wash eyes, clean nose

Morning toilet is an analogue of our washing. Prepare a small bowl of warm boiled water, cotton pads and sterile cotton. We wipe the eyes with cotton pads moistened with water, making movements from the outer edge of the eye to the inner. Then, in each nostril, we instill 1-2 drops of special drops for washing the nose (you can use saline). We wait a few minutes until the crusts are slightly soaked. At this time, we twist small flagella from the fleece and gently clean the nose with them, making circular movements. You can not put the flagellum too deep. We clean the ears with the same flagella. Remember that a newborn child can only toilet his nose and ears with cotton flagella. Children’s cotton swabs with restraints are intended for children from 1 year old. (See detailed articles on the topic: eye care, how to clean the baby’s nose and article: caring for the baby’s ears)

In the morning, be sure to treat the umbilical wound. To do this, with a clean pipette, drip a few drops of hydrogen peroxide into the wound. The peroxide begins to foam, separating the crusts and “bringing” them to the surface. We remove these crusts with a clean cotton swab, and then apply brilliant green to the wound with another stick (details on the treatment of the umbilical wound).

Changing a diaper

Most modern mothers prefer to use disposable diapers. A baby has to change a disposable diaper about 10 times a day: the child should not be in one diaper for more than 3-4 hours, and besides, you need to change the diaper every time the baby has pooped. The second point, moreover, must be performed even at night, because the feces are not absorbed by the diaper and irritate the skin.

Wash your baby before changing a diaper. If he crap one’s pants – with soap, if not – with warm tap water (if it is not possible to wash it – wipe it with wet wipes). If there is irritation, you can apply a diaper cream on the skin, if not, just let the skin dry.

Be sure to take care of the umbilical wound and make sure that the diaper fastener does not rub it. There are special diapers for newborns who have a recess in place of the navel. If you use others, fold the edge of the diaper or cover your navel with a piece of sterile bandage.

Let’s go for a walk

If the child is healthy, you can walk with him from the first day of life. Regarding children’s walks, the rule “nature has no bad weather” is true. You can cancel a walk only if there is severe frost, abnormal heat or other extreme weather conditions outside. In bad weather, you can take the cradle with the baby to the balcony.

Babies usually sleep in the stroller, so the mother can choose the time for a walk at her own discretion. It is better to start walking from 30-40 minutes, gradually increasing the time of the walk. Over time, you can walk up to 4-6 hours a day, dividing this time into 2 “sets”.

The most important thing is to dress your baby according to the weather, take wet wipes, a changeable diaper and a rain cover for the stroller.

We feed

If there are no contraindications, the child should only be breastfed. WHO recommends exclusively breast milk up to 6 months, which means that even water should not be given until this age, not to mention juices and fruit purees.

Feed the baby on demand. This means that for any crying and anxiety, the mother offers the baby a breast. The baby can stay at the breast until it releases itself. It is not worth interfering in this process and trying to regulate the sucking time: nature and instincts are “smarter” than our mind, the child himself knows how much and how often he needs to suckle.

Bath procedures

Bathe your baby every day. The temperature of the water for bathing should be about 37 degrees, but here it is better to focus on the child: someone behaves calmer in cooler water, someone in warmer water.

Boiling water for bathing, as was done in the past, is now not recommended, but until the umbilical wound has healed, it is better to add manganese to the water – it acts as an antiseptic. The potassium permanganate solution should be pale pink. After the wound has healed, if there are skin problems, you can bathe the baby in herbs.

For newborns, it is better to use a small bath. For the first baths, you can wrap the baby in a diaper so that he is not scared of the water. You can wash your child with soap and other products 2-3 times a week, and the rest of the time you can do with water. When bathing, do not forget to wash your hair. At the end of bathing for hardening, you can pour cool water over the baby’s legs.

After bathing, the baby should be well wrapped in a warm diaper or towel. The head also needs to be covered.

Details: how to bathe newborns

After bathing

After bathing, you also need to carry out some procedures:

  • Treat the umbilical wound in the same way as we did in the morning.
  • Trim nails while they are soft with water.
  • Wipe all wrinkles with oil (including the area behind the ears – crusts often form there).

Going to bed

Most breastfeeding babies fall asleep at the breast. You can rock the baby in your arms, and then carefully transfer it to the crib. The experience of mothers shows that it is better to swaddle babies for sleep: so their own movements do not cause them any concern, they are not afraid of their own arms or legs. By the way, it is better to buy a cradle for a newborn baby, not a crib. A limited space is more comfortable for a baby than a spacious and out of proportion bed.

The room must be ventilated before going to bed. It is believed that the optimal temperature for the room where the baby sleeps is about 20 degrees.

It is impossible to put the baby to sleep on his back – in a dream, the baby can burp and choke on vomit. To prevent the baby from rolling over on his back, laying him on his side, support his back with a small pillow or a folded blanket. The position of the sleeping baby should be periodically changed, shifting it from one side to the other. This is necessary so that the bones of the skull are not deformed.

The most popular questions that concern young mothers

A quivering young mother shudders at every sneeze of her baby and falls into confusion in front of many unfamiliar phenomena. Let’s try to deal with the most common questions of young mothers.

Odd color and dryness of the baby’s skin

The skin of a newly born baby may have a reddish, yellowish tint. The first is due to a very thin layer of subcutaneous fat: the red tint is the blood vessels that show through the skin. Yellowness (jaundice) is the result of an increased content of bilirubin and goes away when the liver begins to work more actively.

Dryness and flaking of the skin is also normal. In this way, the skin adapts to the new air environment. Usually peeling disappears a month after birth. You can speed up this process by lubricating the flaky areas with baby cream or oil (see article: Why do newborns have flaky skin on the head and body – what mom needs to know) .

Detail: proper skin care for a newborn baby

Baby hiccups

Many babies start hiccuping in the stomach. Usually, hiccups in babies occur due to excess air that has entered the stomach during feeding. The best way to get rid of it is to scold the baby with a “column” and give a tummy massage ( article on hiccups and how to deal with it ).

The child burps

The regurgitation is a consequence of the underdevelopment of the digestive system and a special children’s mechanism of “fight” with overeating. As a preventative measure, make sure that the baby is properly latching onto the breast (so he does not swallow too much air), and keep him in a “column” after feeding. In general, regurgitation is not at all dangerous. Normally, once a day, a child can even burp with a “fountain”. If this happens more often and regurgitation lasts longer than 6 months, you should consult a neurologist ( see article on regurgitation ).

The child sneezes and coughs

If there are no signs of a cold (runny nose, high temperature) – these are natural self-cleansing reflexes of the body from mucus in the throat and nose.

Important:

  • Cough in a child (how to treat)
  • Temperature (how to treat)
  • Runny nose (how to treat)

How to dress your baby

The body of the baby is still bad at retaining heat and maintaining a constant temperature. This must be taken into account both at home and on the street. Excessively wrapped up, the child can easily be overheated, and leaving undressed – on the contrary, supercool. The main dressing rule for a toddler is to dress as you are + one layer of clothing.

Baby clothes should be made from natural fabrics, have a comfortable design and secure fasteners. It is best to choose blouses and overalls that can be easily put on without twisting the arms and legs of the child and without pushing the head into the narrow neck. All accessories (buttons, buttons) must be of high quality and securely sewn so that the little one cannot tear off and swallow a small piece of clothing.

How to understand if the baby is warm

The temperature of the arms and legs does not mean anything in this matter, because they are often cool in babies due to poor thermoregulation. To understand if the child is warm, you need to touch his neck: if it is cool, it is better to dress the baby warmer.

Can I give my baby a pacifier?

If there are plans for successful and long-term breastfeeding, it is better not to, in any case, up to 6 months, until lactation is fully established. The nipple confuses the child, he begins to confuse the mother’s breast and its silicone substitute, and may refuse the breast altogether. In addition, there is an opinion that sucking a nipple has a bad effect on the formation of bite. Reading on the topic: how to choose a pacifier and how to wean it from a pacifier

What to do if a child sucks his thumb?

Thumb sucking is a manifestation of the sucking reflex characteristic of infants. The first thing to do is to offer the baby a breast: he may be hungry. Thumb sucking can be a stress response: the baby sucks to calm down. In any case, this cannot be ignored. Try to understand the cause and eliminate it ( see how to wean a child from sucking fingers ).

Is it worth it to run to the child at the first cry and take him in your arms?

The unequivocal answer is yes. Whatever the reason for crying, it cannot be ignored. A child may cry not only from hunger and physical discomfort. He may simply need his mother’s affection and warmth – this is the same vital need that must be satisfied ( see how to understand the reasons for the crying of a newborn baby ).

How to deal with colic?

Prevention is always better than cure, therefore, as part of prevention, lay the baby on the tummy, do a gentle massage of the tummy, wear it in a “column” after eating. If the attack nevertheless began – give the medicine, attach something warm to the tummy (a heating pad, a diaper heated with an iron). In emergency cases, when nothing helps and the attack does not go away – put a gas outlet tube Important: how to save a child from colic.

How to deal with a child so as not to frighten him?

Newborn babies react very specifically to sounds: under the monotonous rumble of a vacuum cleaner, the baby can sleep peacefully, but sharp loud sounds scare the baby very much. It is absolutely not necessary to surround the baby with silence, but so that the child is not afraid, harsh sounds should be avoided.

In general, all movements and actions of the mother should be smooth. The baby can be very frightened if, when bathing, he is abruptly immersed in water, or if he is abruptly put on the changing table. Until the child has adapted, everything that surrounds him in the “big world” can cause anxiety, so caution is needed in everything.

Reading on the topic: What to do if your child is afraid of loud noises

What to do if diaper rash appears?

Almost all mothers face this trouble. Red crusts and severe irritation appear when the baby’s skin is in contact with moisture for a long time. Contrary to prejudice, diaper rash in a child appears much less frequently in disposable diapers than in diapers. If the diaper is not overfilled, moisture is absorbed into it quickly and the baby’s skin has almost no contact with it, so it is not worth abandoning the diaper in favor of diapers in case of diaper rash.

Irritated skin needs healing and hydration. It is not necessary to constantly wash the baby with soap with diaper rash: soap dries the skin a lot and only increases the feeling of discomfort. It is necessary to wash the baby with water, and then lubricate the irritated area with oil or a healing cream (Bepanten, Bübchen). Be sure to arrange air baths, that is, leave the baby just naked, without a diaper and a diaper. When bathing in the evening, you can use herbs (chamomile, string) – they also have a healing effect.

Advice for dads

Read: Why are you tired? You are sitting at home! Or a memo to husbands who do not understand all the “charms” of maternity leave

The main advice for dads is to properly prepare for the meeting of his wife from the hospital. Flowers, balloons, and room decorations are great, but any mom will appreciate more if you free her from homework, which can accumulate a lot in a few days in the maternity hospital. After discharge from the maternity hospital, you want to get home as soon as possible in order to finally wash in your bath and lie on your bed, so that mountains of unwashed dishes and scattered things will not please your spouse at all. In addition, not all women are ready to flutter after childbirth. Most feel unimportant: weakness, pain from stitches, fatigue. This must be taken into account not only at the time of discharge, but also in general for the first time after the birth of the baby. To get into the rhythm and start coping with the child and household chores, a young mother needs time.

Caring for a newborn only at first glance seems to be something very complicated. Within a month, any mother does all the manipulations “with her eyes closed” and, by the intonation of crying, she understands that her beloved child is worried. The most important thing in caring for a baby is to do everything with love and “get involved” in the life of a little man as much as possible.

What They Mean and Why They Matter

The four domains of early childhood education are social/emotional, cognitive, motor, and language and literacy. These domains are important because they all contribute to the child’s development in one way or another. Social/Emotional skills help children develop empathy for others while cognitive skills allow a child to learn from their environment. Motor skills allow kids to explore movement through play which is necessary for them to grow up healthy; it also helps them develop coordination with their hands. Language and literacy skills enable children to express themselves verbally and write down what they want so that other people can understand what they’re saying as well as communicate with others effectively by using written words instead of just sounds.

In this article we will examine these four domains of early childhood and why they are important to a child’s development.

Social/ emotional Skills

In early childhood, social/emotional skills are about giving kids the ability to take other people’s perspectives and empathize with them. These skills are are a good foundation for developing self-regulation, which is an important skill for both children and adults. Kids develop social skills through play. While parents may see play as simply a fun activity, it is an important part of a child’s development at an early age. Here are Head Heart Hands Preschool, children learn social/emotional skills through structured play activities in a loving and inclusive environment that will set them up for a lifetime of success.

Teachers work hard to help children feel happy and successful while they grow in the Head Heart Hands preschool environment. Social-emotional development is about how well a child can interact with other people – through language, gestures or emotions like sadness or anger. There are many important social emotional milestones that kids will reach as they go from infancy into childhood.

Some social/emotional milestones a child reaches before the age of three are: communicating needs, playing games with others and understanding social roles. The Head Heart Hands preschool curriculum includes a variety of activities that help children learn about their emotions while they play together in the classroom.

At Head Heart Hands preschool, our focus is on social and emotional development. We have a parent-child curriculum centered around understanding emotions and positive self-image building while focusing on the importance of relationships. One way we do this is by having structured routines that teach children to understand how their actions affect others, as well as understanding when it’s time for personal playtime or group time. We also have a designated “feeling corner” where children are able to go if they’re feeling angry, sad, hurtful or embarrassed so they can calm down before returning to the rest of the class.

One strategy in our classroom that promotes social-emotional skills such as empathy and self-regulation among all ages is called Red Light/Green Light Circle Time: after giving instructions about what students should be doing in circle. We also teach social and emotional skills with games that help kids learn how to take turns, be a good sport, share feelings appropriately.

Through the use of these activities and a variety others, we ensure that your child develops positive social/emotional skills that will set themselves up for a lifetime of success at Head Heart Hands Preschool.

Cognitive Skills

In early childhood, cognitive skills are about the ability to learn and reason. These skills allow children to solve problems through trial-and-error. Cognitive skills are different than academic skills. Cognitive development is about how well a child can think through problems or situations so they can solve them on their own without assistance from an adult or peer. Cognitive skills are not innate; instead, these skills develop gradually as kids grow up, become more aware of themselves and then explore different ways to interact with the world around them.

Some cognitive milestones reached before the age of three include: counting past ten or twenty items for example; sequencing steps to complete tasks like drawing pictures; and following simple directions given by adults such as “put your clothes away.

Cognitive skills affect how children think about their world through the lens of knowledge they have gained from observations and experiences. Children who are engaged in early cognitive development will be better able to understand abstract concepts such as time (past/present), size (big/little) or order (first/last). Cognitive milestones at age three include: understanding that pictures can represent people, asking “why” questions when something occurs out of place within their environment, beginning to sort objects into categories based on similarities and differences between them, using verbal prompts for self-directed tasks like getting dressed independently with help (“Put your shirt over your head.”), pointing to named body parts.

Another we teach cognitive skills is by doing puzzles at center time or group time with other children. There are many different types of puzzles that help stimulate learning such as visual discrimination, problem solving, spatial awareness and organizational skills.

Cognitive skills are an important part of the daily curriculum at Head Heart Hands Preschool and establish the foundations for future academic success.

Motor Skills

In early childhood, motor skill development is crucial for helping children succeed physically as well as socially with others their age. Motor tasks like throwing a ball can be difficult at first because it’s hard for kids to coordinate all the different muscles involved in doing so (i.e., arm strength & coordination). However, through repetition and practice, the motor skills required for throwing a ball will become easier and more natural.

By the age of three, motor milestones include: rolling over, sitting up unsupported, cruising/walking with furniture support and balancing on one foot. Children should also be able to complete many independent daily living skills such as feeding themselves, washing their hands, and some basic dressing skills. Children should also be able to throw/kick a ball, catch a ball , pedaling a tricycle, engage in jumping games such as playing hopscotch, and blow bubbles.

At Head Heart Hands, children are engaged daily in active activities that will allow them to develop motor skills naturally.

Language & Literacy Development

One of your goals as parents should be helping your child develop strong literacy and verbal abilities so he or she may succeed academically later on in life. We know you want them to be able to read books for fun when it’s time for school! At Head Heart Hands Preschool, circle time is an important part of our daily routines.

Through the use of circle time, your child will learn to identify letters and their sounds, learn how to write his or her name, develop vocabulary skills such as describing things in words and know how to read a book for fun.

This will help establish a love for books and learning as well as ensure they start school with the appropriate literacy skills required to be successful in kindergarten.

In Summary, the four domains of early childhood education include social/emotional, cognitive, motor and language and literacy skills. These four domains help children grow academically as well as socially with the appropriate academic foundation for success at school age.Children learn best when they are engaged in a learning activity that caters to their individual development.

Head Heart Hands preschool will cater to these four domains through circle time activities such as identifying letters, practicing writing his or her name, developing vocabulary skills like describing things and being able to read books for fun! We hope this article has helped you better understand what each domain means so we can make sure your child is flourishing while attending Head Heart Hands Preschool!

Child Development > Fact Sheets > Yale Medicine

Overview

It’s a joy to witness the seemingly miraculous transformation of a helpless newborn into an active, curious child and, ultimately, a capable and independent adult. No two children develop in exactly the same way, but the phases of child development are, for a healthy child, logical and predictable.

There is plenty that parents can do to support their child’s optimal development, but there’s no advantage to rushing it, says Joseph Woolston, MD, a Yale Medicine Child Study Center psychiatrist.

What are the different domains of child development?

According to Dr. Woolston, child development is “a complex unfolding of a series of skills and adaptations, with very predictable stages, that occur in multiple dimensions at approximately the same time and in approximately the same order.” To assess whether an infant or child is developing at a healthy and normal pace, pediatricians and child development experts look at four domains (or aspects) of development:

  • Motor skills, including large (or gross) motor skills, such as rolling over, crawling and learning to walk and run, and fine motor skills, such as the ability to pick up and eat small pieces of food or hold a pencil and draw or write
  • Sensory skills, including how a child uses the senses (taste, smell, touch, sound and sight) to learn about the environment
  • Social skills, including how an infant interacts with parents and caregivers, and then with others, including siblings, extended family and strangers
  • Cognitive skills, including how a child’s attention, memory, and thinking and learning skills develop and grow

Dr. Woolston says there is logic in how the developmental process unfolds. The visual recognition of parents’ faces, for example, starts social development, such as smiling, and cognitive development, in that the infant develops memory of parents as trusted caregivers. He points out that all this serves specific needs. “It’s no accident that stranger anxiety typically begins to occur as a child learns to walk and run,” he says. “Now that the child has the ability to move away from his mother, it makes sense from an evolutionary perspective that he needs to have anxiety triggered by a person who is not his mother.”

What are the stages of young child development?

Child development begins in the womb. Here is an overview of the developmental phases that a typical, healthy child moves through in the first five years of life.

  • Gestation, from conception through birth: The health of a growing fetus is shaped by genetics and environmental factors, including nutrition and exposure to toxins and infection. This period is important psychologically to parents who are adjusting to a new identity and set of responsibilities, Dr. Woolston says.
  • Neonatal, during the first few months of life: “Some people call this the fourth trimester,” Dr. Woolston says, noting that development during this period is focused on attunement, to the baby’s body (feeding, sleeping, elimination of waste) and to the primary caregiver. “This is when babies begin to show both visual and facial expression reciprocity,” he says.
  • 4 to 18 months: Social (babbling, laughing) and sensory (taste, sight, sound) skills become more complex. Babies begin to control their limbs and bodies, learning how to use their hands and wave their feet—precursors to being able to walk. Cognitive skills, such as memory, sharpen. “This is the phase when the baby and primary caretaker should be developing a very robust attachment,” Dr. Woolston says. “Toward the end of this phase, the baby understands that just because someone or something is out of sight doesn’t mean it is ‘gone’ forever.
  • Toddlerhood: Learning to walk (or “toddle,” as it used to be said) gives a child increasing autonomy, Dr. Woolston says, noting that the newfound ability to say “no” is a way to test limits and establish boundaries.
  • Preschool: Ages 3 to 5 are a “wonderfully exuberant time of life,” Dr. Woolston says. Mastery of more complex social skills allows children to make friends, engage in creative play and understand humorous concepts such as irony and upside-down.

Each phase includes what Dr. Woolston describes as “a suite of skills clustered together to form a stage of competency—motoric, sensory, cognitive and, most important of all, social. Humans are social primates. Human development is all about our progressive capacity for more and more complex social development.”

How can you tell if a child is developing normally?

Proud parents naturally share information about what their children are doing. Many feel proud when a child masters a particular skill (such as putting together a sentence) on the early end of a developmental phase and/or worried if another milestone (such as walking) happens on the later side. But neither is all that meaningful. What matters is that these milestones occur within the normal range.

Pediatricians evaluate basic developmental progress in the routine well-child visits. It’s not always linear: Many kids regress a bit, here and there, before moving on to new accomplishments. A healthy child may be late to walk, for example, but if all else is well, there’s little reason for concern.

How are developmental delays diagnosed?

On the other hand, if a child shows a pattern of delayed development, there may be a problem and an assessment may be in order.

“Children are motivated to move forward in their development and master their world,” says Ann L. Close, PhD, associate director of the Child Study Center’s Infancy & Early Childhood Program and a specialist in the assessment and treatment of children under 5. “We worry when there’s no drive toward progressive development. There can be a number of reasons for this, but we want to know what they are so we can help the child get back on track.”

At the Child Study Center, a developmental assessment includes a thorough examination of a child’s medical and developmental history, starting with information about the mother’s pregnancy. Evidence-based diagnostic tests (such as the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development and the Mullen Scales of Early Learning) are used to determine whether there is a meaningful delay, identify it, and measure its extent. Specialists from other disciplines, such as speech and language, may be called in to evaluate, and school or childcare visits may be part of the process, too. Data on a child’s mastery of language, motor skills and cognitive, social and emotional development are used to arrive at a diagnosis and a treatment strategy, which are shared with the parents at a feedback session.

How are developmental delays treated?

Treatment for developmental delays will vary according to the age of the child and the diagnosis. For example, for very young children, treatments may consist of state-financed home visits as part of the Birth to Three program and therapeutic interventions, such as speech and language, occupational or physical therapy. School-age children will require the development of a special education plan designed to address the specific needs of the child.

What makes Yale Medicine’s approach to diagnosing and treating developmental delay in children unique?

The Yale Medicine Child Study Center has played an important role in the field of child mental health, contributing groundbreaking research and innovative ideas that have changed and continue to shape national policy, says Linda Mayes, MD, director of the center. “Deep policy considerations that relate to the health and wellbeing of children, such as universal preschool, are part of our history here,” she says.

The Child Study Center is committed to looking at child development in the context of the “whole child,” Dr. Mayes says. “If a child comes to us with a speech and language delay, we are not necessarily trying to hone down to one diagnosis,” she says. “Speech services might be an outcome that we’d arrive at, but we’d also be looking at the family. We’d bring together speech and language specialists, developmental pediatricians, and others. When we obligate ourselves to help a family, we are there with them for as long as they want us.”

“There is no such thing as ‘standard of care’ here,” Dr. Mayes says. “We have no hard standard of ‘normal’ that we expect all kids to adhere to. We’re really about the full context of a child and what is holding back or of concern to his or her family and their definition of success and health.”

The emphasis at the Child Study Center is, she says, “the best interest of the child.”

“We take an adaptive point of view,” she says. “We want to know what serves this particular child’s best interests in keeping development on track. We don’t lose sight of the child or the parents. Our goal is to help them have stability in their lives.”

We have seen our son grow so much in the year he has been at TopHat, particularly in his language and social skills. His teachers are warm and experienced and clearly take great joy in the progress our son has made. We have also been very grateful for the responsiveness and flexibility of the School Director. It is a great team.

My son joined TopHat at 4 months old. As a first time parent, I was nervous about it, but we were able to meet the Infant room teacher, Ms. Hiru and we felt more at ease. Over the year of our son being in the Infant room, Ms. Hiru has been absolutely incredible. She is always communicative with parents, works with the infants on their mobile and mental development, and maybe most importantly to me – she truly loves my son and makes him feel safe and cared for (sometimes he doesn’t want to leave!). We just love her!! Our son also spends some afternoons with Ms. Estella and she is fantastic too!
We appreciate all the teachers and admin at TopHat – it’s so nice to see other teachers and students know who our son is and enjoy interacting with him. In the front office, Patty is always quick to respond to emails and calls. If we ever have an issue, she is quick to sort it out and take action. There is also a monthly PTA meeting so parents know what’s happening at TopHat and an app so we can see photos and track our sons eating/napping progress throughout the day. We appreciate the community TopHat has built!

We had the pleasure of entrusting two children to Top Hat and cannot express enough how impressed we are with the exceptional care and nurturing environment provided by this daycare. From the moment we walked through the doors, we felt a sense of warmth and professionalism that immediately put us at ease.
The staff at Top Hat are truly amazing. Each and every member of the team exhibits a genuine passion for working with children, and their dedication to their profession is evident in the way they interact with the kids. They create a safe, loving, and stimulating environment that fosters growth, learning, and socialization.
Our children have thrived under their care, gaining confidence, developing new skills, and forming beautiful friendships.
The daycare facilities at Top Hat are top-notch. The premises are clean, organized, and designed with the safety and comfort of the children in mind. They have age-appropriate play areas, stimulating toys, and a variety of activities that engage children’s imaginations and creativity.
We wholeheartedly recommend Top Hat to any parent seeking an exceptional daycare for their child. This daycare has exceeded our expectations in every way, and we are incredibly grateful for the love, care, and support they provide to my child.

Our daughter is currently in the infant room and loves her teachers Ms. Marbely and Ms. Lilia. Every morning we drop her off, she has a huge smile on her face. The app gives us constant updates and even pictures of her throughout the day. We are very happy with our choice in daycare.

Our daughter has been at Top Hat from about 5 months old until her current age of 18 months. We love Top Hat and so does she. It’s a clean and safe environment, the teachers are friendly and always greet her with a smile, and the administration does a good job of communicating with parents. We have been very happy with our choice of daycare!

Our daughter is currently in the infant room and loves going to Top Hat each day. Ms. Marbely and Ms. Lilia are so loving and caring. The directors are also very thorough with email communications to parents. We have been happy with our choice in daycare so far

My two children have been to this daycare and we love it. My son has learned so much and he loves going to school. The teachers are caring and great. Ms. Patty is always available to answer any questions. We would definitely recomend Top Hat

My son truly enjoyed coming here but this place is anything but a Montessori. In fact it is a business and if your child is anything but normal according to their standards they will abruptly end caring for them.
Jessica Xu was an amazing director and a true advocate for children. She always saw the innocence in our son and knew that every child learns in his/her own way. Ever since she left we lost our son’s biggest advocate.
Out of the blue my wife was called to a meeting where the owner and acting director decided that our son was not a good fit for their environment. They suspected that our son has some form of ADD and was hindering the other children from learning. On their website under about us it clearly says “we work with children who have been diagnosed with ADHD.”
We decided to get our son an evaluation and even contacted our speech therapist for help. The speech therapist offered to give the school pointers on how to help our son focus. They agreed to give it a try and reevaluate after three weeks.
During the last week the acting director emailed my wife offering us an extension for another month. This gave us a glimmer of hope that maybe our son had improved in their eyes. We had been scrambling looking for a new place to no success so the month extension was a relief.
Less than 48 hours later my wife received another email from the acting director. They had rescinded the previous offer saying one of the teachers will be out for the next month and that his last day will be the end of the week. The least they could have done was contact us by phone. This felt like the equivalent to “break-up over text.”
Now we are left with no childcare after this weekend. If anyone out there has any recommendations please help us.

Unprofessional and untrustworthy administration. Maria Montessori would not be proud of this place. Do not send your children here, they only care about their business not your child.

My daughter likes her teacher and her classmates lot. The facility is clean and nice. They care about my child’s well-being. Definitely recommended this school.
