    How to write an application for employment – sample 2022 – 2023

    Application for employment – a sample, each employer has the right to establish independently, but the document must indicate the full name of the applicant and position, the date of preparation and commencement of labor relations . A document drawn up in an arbitrary form, but containing all the necessary information, will not be considered an error. Consider the need and algorithm for applying.

    Job application form

    Labor relations between an employee and an employer are formalized by an employment contract and an employment order. Art. 65 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation provides a closed list of documents that the employer has the right to require from the employee.

    Job applications are not included in this list. Therefore, such an application is not required. But many firms, in the old fashioned way, before starting an employment relationship, ask the employee to draw up a job application (the sample of which is not approved). The form of the document can be developed by the organization at its discretion. It is mandatory to reflect the following data:

    • last name, first name, patronymic of the employee;
    • job title and full name of the head to whom the application is addressed;
    • the position for which the new employee is applying;
    • date of commencement of performance of labor duties;
    • date of document preparation;
    • personal signature of the employee.

    Additional information may also be indicated: salary, working conditions (duration of the working day, the possibility of combining).

    Any sample application for employment involves an application for a vacant position in the name of the head with the name of the organization or can be addressed to an individual entrepreneur.

    The Labor Code does not stipulate that the submission of an application for employment is a mandatory procedure for employment. The exception is the procedure for employment in state (subparagraph 1, paragraph 2, article 26 of the law of July 27, 2004 No. 79-FZ) and municipal structures (subparagraph 1, paragraph 3 of article 16 of the law of March 2, 2007 No. 25-FZ). Subsequent registration is accompanied by an order and the conclusion of an employment contract. A job application is kept in the employee’s personal file for at least 75 years.

    Applicants usually go through an interview before writing a job application. Upon successful completion, future employees transfer personal documents or their copies to the personnel department (passport data, registration documents in the PFR accounting system, salary certificates from previous jobs).

    Results

    The application for employment of a new employee serves as an additional basis for issuing an order, which contains information about the position held, the beginning of the performance of labor duties.     Placing a child in a kindergarten is a difficult test for parents, especially when living in large cities. Everyone wants their child to be in a kindergarten that provides the best conditions for kids. But the number of places is always limited, and the number of applicants is four figures. What is needed to arrange a child in kindergarten and how to do it better, this article will tell.

    In accordance with the Federal Law of December 29, 2012 No. 273-FZ “On Education in the Russian Federation”, children aged from 2 months to 8 years old are admitted to state educational organizations implementing the educational program of preschool education (PEE) (see Art. 64 and Article 67 of the Law on Education).

    Parents (legal representatives) of children have the right to choose the preschool, the direction of the group and are responsible for the choice.

    How to write an application for admission to a kindergarten?

    Admission to institutions of preschool education is regulated by the Procedure approved by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation dated April 8, 2014 No. 293 (hereinafter referred to as the Procedure).

    In accordance with paragraph 9 of the Procedure:

    • Admission to an educational organization is carried out upon the personal application of the parent (legal representative) of the child upon presentation of the original document proving the identity of the parent (legal representative),
    • An educational organization may accept the said application in the form of an electronic document using public information and telecommunication networks.

    The parents (legal representatives) of the child must provide the following information in their application:

    1

    surname, first name, patronymic (last – if available) of the child

    2

    date and place of birth of the child

    3

    last name, first name, patronymic (last name, if available) of the child’s parents (legal representatives)

    4

    address of the place of residence of the child, his parents (legal representatives)

    5

    contact phone numbers of the parents (legal representatives) of the child. An exemplary application form is posted by the educational organization on the information stand and on the official website of the educational organization on the Internet

    The questionnaire includes information approved by the Procedure and is a small form that is convenient both for filling out and for use. If the kindergarten is a municipal institution, then in the form, in the column displaying its name, it is necessary to add the words “municipal budgetary” .

    After submitting the application, it is imperative to obtain a receipt for the acceptance of documents, signed by the responsible person and affixed with the seal of the institution (clause 14 of the Order).

    Admission of children entering an educational organization for the first time is carried out on the basis of a medical report

    Identified sick children or children with suspected illness in preschool educational organizations are not accepted; children who fall ill during the day are isolated from healthy children (temporarily placed in the premises of the medical unit) until the parents arrive or are hospitalized in a medical and preventive organization with informing the parents (Clause 11. 1 of the Resolution of the Chief State Sanitary Doctor of the Russian Federation dated May 15, 2013 N 26 ” On the approval of SanPiN 2.4.1.3049-13 “Sanitary and epidemiological requirements for the device, content and organization of the operating mode of preschool educational organizations”).

    Additionally, for admission to an educational organization:

    • parents (legal representatives) of children living in the assigned territory, in order to enroll a child in an educational organization, additionally present the original birth certificate of the child or a document confirming the relationship of the applicant (or the legality of the representation of the rights of the child ), certificate of registration of the child at the place of residence or at the place of stay in the assigned territory or a document containing information about the registration of the child at the place of residence or at the place of stay;
    • parents (legal representatives) of children who do not live in the assigned territory additionally present a birth certificate of the child.
    • parents (legal representatives) of children who are foreign citizens or stateless persons additionally present a document confirming the applicant’s relationship (or the legality of the representation of the rights of the child), and a document confirming the applicant’s right to stay in the Russian Federation.

    Copies of the documents presented at admission are stored in the educational organization for the duration of the child’s education.

    What does an application for a kindergarten give?

    Application is a document sent to a preschool educational institution. The petition contains a petition, in providing a place for the admission of the child.

    Now, such a document is a reinforcement of the desire of parents to arrange their baby in a preschool. Although it does not have a legislative basis, in practice it often helps to find a place in a kindergarten. MBU School No. 82

About our school

Municipal budgetary educational institution secondary school No. 82 began to function on September 1, 1991. The most impactful year was the 1992-1993 academic year, when 841 students (33 classes) entered Grade 1. This year, 3751 students studied at the school, classes were held in 3 shifts.
During the work of the school, 59 students of the ninth grade with a certificate of a special sample were released, 44 people were medalists in the eleventh grade, among them 14 people with a gold medal, 30 people with a silver medal. A graduate of the 2005-2006 academic year, Sergey Ivashchenko, was awarded by the Ministry of Education of the Samara Region with a trip to Moscow for the All-Russian Alumni Ball in the Kremlin for special achievements in teaching. Only two graduates from the city of Tolyatti received such an award. Throughout the years of study, the quality of education among students did not fall below 37%. Student achievement improved from 98.1% to 99.6%. The school has a widely represented network of additional education, which is built in the following areas:
The MBU “School No. 82” has created comfortable conditions for the education and upbringing of children. The school has 52 classrooms with modern equipment, service work rooms, workshops, two sports and assembly halls, a library, a psychologist’s office, a music room, a rhythm room, a medical room and a dining room. The priority direction in the 2018-2019 academic year was the patriotic education of schoolchildren, the formation of a sense of patriotism, an active citizenship, a sense of respect for the historical and cultural heritage of their homeland.
Within the framework of this direction, joint work was continued with the Council of Veterans, TOS-16, and the Patriot club.
Every year, the school hosts events that have become traditional: the festival of soldiers’ songs on the day of the Defender of the Fatherland, the review of the system and songs, the Red Ribbon Week, the Understudy Day, the Open Heart, the competition of patriotic poems.
It has become a tradition to visit the “Wheel” theater, the “Puppet” theater and cinemas, the children’s library, the museum of local lore, and other institutions. The organization of cultural leisure was carried out through the implementation of the interdepartmental project “The World of Arts for Children”. As part of the project, 44 events were held. The total number of students covered by the events amounted to 3058 people. (2.92% enrollment rate for students in grades 1-8). As part of the project, school students were introduced to the types of classical culture: music, architecture, literature, theater, fine arts, dance, painting, original genre.
In order to organize the leisure of schoolchildren, agreements were concluded with the creative groups “Academy”, “Rainbow”, with the school of the Olympic reserve, art gallery, AvtoVAZ museums, theaters of the city, the Philharmonic Society, the local history museum, the travel agency “Rumb”

The development of children’s and youth organizations is an important educational resource, the result of which should be the formation of schoolchildren’s readiness for social and cultural initiatives, an active life position, a sense of citizenship and love for the Motherland.

These 21 schools in New Jersey are among the best in the country , according to US News

According to one of the most recognizable national rankings in the country, New Jersey continues to host some of the best public schools in the United States.

The US News & World Report Top High School Rankings were released Tuesday, with New Jersey vying for 21 of the top 500, including seven of the top 100.

The Middlesex County Academy of Science, Mathematics and Engineering, a select school located on the Edison County College campus, was ranked the best in Garden State and ranked 33rd in the nation.

The school has also been ranked as one of the best science, technology, engineering and math programs in the country. In this category, it ranked second in the United States behind another school in New Jersey, the Monmouth County High School of Technology in Lyncroft, which received top honors there, and ranked 57th nationally.

The report assessed nearly 17,800 schools in the United States, ranking them based on standardized test scores, graduation rates, and the performance of traditionally underserved populations: blacks, Hispanics, and low-income students.

In New Jersey, selective specialty schools tend to get the highest grades, often followed by traditional high schools in affluent suburbs.

Overall, New Jersey was ranked fifth among states by US News after Massachusetts, California, Connecticut and Maryland.

    10 Nonverbal Cues That Convey Confidence At Work

    Imagine your co-worker storms into her office after lunch. She’s red-faced, tight-lipped and speaks to no one. She throws her briefcase on the desk, plops down in her chair and glares out the window. You ask, “Are you all right?” She snaps back in an angry tone, “I’m fine!”

    Which message do you believe: Her nonverbal communication (behavior and voice tone), or her verbal one (words alone)? “Most likely, you believe the nonverbal message,” says Darlene Price, author of Well Said! Presentations and Conversations That Get Results.

    Price says research shows that when a person sends a mismatched message–where nonverbal and verbal messages are incongruent—recipients almost always believe the predominant nonverbal message over the verbal one. “In other words, how we say something is more impactful than what we say,” she explains. “In some studies, nonverbal communication has been shown to carry between 65% and 93% more impact than the actual words spoken, especially when the message involves emotional meaning and attitudes,” she adds.

    Patti Wood, a body language expert and author of Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language, and Charisma, says in a face-to-face interaction with just one person you can exchange up to 10,000 nonverbal cues in less than one minute. “You cannot consciously control all that communication so it can be much more telling than the few words you could exchange in the same amount of time.

    What is a nonverbal cue, exactly?

    Wood says nonverbal cues include “all the communication between people that do not have a direct verbal translation.” They are “body movements, body orientation, nuances of the voice, facial expressions, details of dress, and choice and movement of objects that communicate.” Time and space can also be perceived as having nonverbal cues.

    “Simply put, nonverbal cues include all the ways you present and express yourself, apart from the actual words you speak,” Price adds. “And they are critically important at work and in business because perception is reality.”

    She says Friedrich Nietzsche was spot on when he said, “All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses.”

    “How others ‘sense’ or perceive you significantly impacts your success in the workplace,” Price explains. Otherwise brilliant people with great ideas and exceptional talent are often misjudged, mislabeled, and overlooked because of their ineffective nonverbal communication.

    Because nonverbal cues are sent primarily from the “emotional brain” rather than the neocortex, they create more honest and revealing messages, Wood says. “Nonverbal cues can help business people determine others’ motivations and analyze business interactions with much more richness, depth, and insight than can come from simply relying on spoken or printed words.”

    Professionals who understand nonverbal cues can evaluate what their clients, customers and co-workers are really telling them in order to know how to better meet their needs. “Employers can evaluate the messages their employees are sending to customers, clients or fellow workers and know whether that employee is hurting or helping business,” Wood says. “And employees can learn to read the subtle signals a boss is sending in order to adjust their behavior accordingly.”

    In power-differential relationships, such as with superiors and subordinates, successful interactions depend on both parties being able to use and read body language, Wood explains. “Superiors need to know how to make their subordinates comfortable while communicating their desires in order to get results. Subordinates need to know how to read the boss’s subtle signals to discern the best way to approach professional situations.”

    Effective nonverbal communication is critically important for career advancement, Price adds. “Among the top traits employers look for when hiring or promoting a candidate for management are confidence, professionalism and enthusiasm. Expressing these and other leadership traits requires sending the right nonverbal cues.”

    You cannot avoid sending nonverbal messages to others; however, it is possible to train yourself to send the right ones. Here are ten nonverbal cues that convey confidence and credibility in the workplace.

    Good eye contact. Eye contact is your primary tool for establishing nonverbal connections with others, Price says. “It communicates your level of involvement, interest and warmth. When speaking to others, ideally look directly into their eyes at least two to three seconds before looking away or moving to the next person. Merely glancing at someone for one second or less is known as eye dart and conveys insecurity, anxiety or evasion.” The next time you’re in a meeting or giving a speech, ask a friend to count how long you look at specific individuals and if you visually engage with everyone in the room.

    A confident handshake. Communicating through touch is another important nonverbal behavior. “Always put your hand out to shake hands,” Wood says. “A classic good handshake is one with full palm to palm contact.”

    In business, the handshake is often the only appropriate expression of touch so it’s critical to have a good one, Price adds. “A good handshake consists of a full and firm handclasp with palms embraced web to web. Shake up and down once or twice, coupled with a sincere smile and eye contact. Avoid the extremes of either a weak limp handshake or an aggressive bone-crushing one. Strike the right balance—firm enough to convey confidence yet matched to the strength of the other person. Treat men and women with equal respect when shaking hands. Gender makes no difference, and either may initiate the handshake.”

    Effective gestures. A gesture is any physical movement that helps express an idea, opinion or emotion. “Strive to punctuate your words with movement that is natural, lively, purposeful and spontaneous,” Price says. “Be genuinely yourself and let your motions match your message. Avoid common distracting mannerisms such as finger-pointing, fidgeting, scratching, tapping, playing with hair, wringing hands, and twisting a ring.”

    Dressing the part. Shakespeare asserts in Hamlet, “For the apparel oft proclaims the man. ” For men and women, clothing speaks volumes in the workplace, Price says. “Make sure ‘business casual’ is not ‘business careless.’ Choose high quality, well-tailored garments that convey professionalism. Depending on your corporate culture, wear a business suit or at least a jacket for important meetings and presentations, especially with senior leaders and customers. Avoid showy accessories, busy patterns, tight garments and revealing necklines.” Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. If career advancement is your goal, convey a polished professional presence in the workplace.

    To complement your business attire, take steps to control perspiration; avoid cologne or perfume due to others’ possible allergies and sensitivities to smell; ensure fresh breath; and keep nails and hands neatly manicured, Price suggests.

    Authoritative posture and presence. “Take up space,” Wood says. Use the arms on the chair, or stand with your feet a bit apart. “A female leg stance in North America is with the feet typically 4 to 6 inches apart, and a male power stance starts with the feet more than 8 inches apart.

    Price adds, “When you stand up tall and straight, you send a message of self-assurance, authority and energy.” Whether standing or sitting, imagine a string gently pulling your head and spine toward the ceiling. Your weight is evenly balanced, feet solidly on the floor, arms and hands visible, relaxed and uncrossed. “Good posture creates a dynamic commanding presence and an attitude of leadership. Conversely, bad posture signals to others that you lack confidence and have low self-esteem or low energy levels.”

    Appropriate facial expressions. “Each of the seven basic human emotions (anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise) has been scientifically proven to have a certain facial expression associated with it,” Price says. “Because your facial expressions are closely tied to emotion, they are often involuntary and unconscious.”

    Imagine the mismatched message when a fearful pensive face describes the life-enriching benefits of a new healthcare product. “Become aware of what your face is revealing to observers, and choose the expression that matches your intended message,” she says. “For example, if you want to convey energy and enthusiasm, allow your face to become more animated. Practice in front of a mirror until it looks and feels natural. To show you’re paying attention while listening, hold a very slight smile, nod occasionally, and maintain good eye contact.”

    Initiating interactions. “Be the first to make eye contact, offer your hand to shake, have an idea or solution, go into a room, and make the call,” Wood says. “You can only afford to wait and go last when you are in the C-suite and ready to retire.”

    Appropriate voice tone. If your significant other has ever said to you, “It’s not what you said, it’s how you said it,” they were referring to your paralanguage, Price explains. “Separate from the actual words used, these nonverbal elements of your voice include voice tone, pacing, pausing, volume, inflection, pitch and articulation. Like facial expressions, choosing the appropriate paralanguage is critically important because it conveys emotional meaning, attitude and impact.” Consider recording your side of several conversations throughout the day. Listen to the recordings and identify what your voice tone communicates.

    Giving your full attention. When speaking with a person, point your toes and square your shoulders toward them, Price says. “This conveys attentiveness and creates open body language.” Avoid angling your body away from them. Lean into the conversation; focus your eyes, ears and energy on them. “These nonverbal cues clearly convey you respect, honor and appreciate the opportunity to meet with them. Make sure your arms and legs are uncrossed. Also, avoid multi-tasking during the interaction. Don’t check e-mail, look at your phone, send a text, check the scores, or disengage in any way. It shows disinterest and disrespect.”

    Responding to others’ nonverbal cues. When leading a meeting, speaking to a group, or interacting one-on-one, pay close attention to the other person’s body language and voice tone, Price says. “Listen with your eyes. Their nonverbal cues can tell you when they have a question, want to say something, agree or disagree, need a break, require more explanation, or have an emotional response.” By responding appropriately to others’ cues, you not only convey confidence in yourself, you show a high level of empathy, sensitivity and care for them which builds trust.

    You can dress the part and use the right words—and granted these are extremely important—but if your body language does not match, or is not congruent, with your visual and verbal message, you will not be believable.

    In other words, you will not be able to successfully communicate your message.                                

    From the moment you walk in the door, your body is telling people all about you; and body language is the fastest way you can showcase confidence to others and exude a winning first impression. Why is confidence so important? Because we are constantly looking for winners to lead us. According to a major study done by Carnegie Mellon University, a professional’s confidence is more important than a professional’s reputation, skill set, or history.

    Over half of the information you provide others about the connection you have with them comes from your body language, or body talk. In fact, 55 percent of a message in conveyed by body language; 38 percent by the tone of voice; and the verbal content only 7 percent of the perceived communication. Yes, 93% percent of communication is nonverbal.

    Following are 10 body language cues you can use to showcase your confidence and professional presence:

    1.      Stand tall and maintain a wide stance.   

    Erect posture instantly identifies you as someone with something to contribute; and signals that you are confident. Stand like a winner. Not only will you look more confident, but you will feel more confident. And keep in mind that if you appear confident, people will think you have something to be confident about. People accept what you project.

    Also keep in mind that when you sit, you want to maintain erect posture. Slouching or bad posture coveys you are a slob or not as competent as those who sit straight, according to Dr. Lillian Glass, a body language expert.

    2.     Keep your head level; chin positioned properly.

    A level head indicates an assured, candid, capable nature. It might also give your voice fuller tones and make you seem to be looking at people straight in the eye. A bowed head, eyes studying the floor, makes you look unsure, vulnerable, passive, and possibly even guilty of something.

    3.     Walk the walk.

    From the moment you walk in the room with dignity and easy confidence you tell people you are someone who matters. Walking well begins with perfect posture. Keep your rib cage high and chin up to add confidence to your walk. Think tall and light, keeping your weight forward on the balls of your feet. Do not settle into each step. Keep your momentum evenly spaced, and walk with a natural, comfortable rhythm. In general, powerful walking is more expansive, with more arm movement and a longer stride.

     4.     Keep hands visible.

    Avoid putting both hands in your pockets.

    It makes you appear uninterested or bored, uncommitted, and sometimes nervous. One hand is okay if the other hand is gesturing. Keeping hands open and palms facing upward indicates openness and honesty; and a willingness to connect with people.

    5.     Make eye contact.

     

    Your eyes are powerful nonverbal tools in part because you make conscious choices of how to use them, and in part because they do a lot of things on their own. When meeting someone for the first time, it is considered polite to make eye contact for a few seconds, but it is considered quite rude to make eye contact and stare. Brief contact is considered normal, but outright staring at other people is interpreted as hostile or threatening.

    Not making eye contact is just as powerful. You might break eye contact and look away to signal to the other person you are ready to end the conversation or frustrated that the other person is talking too much. Not making eye contact when you meet someone for the first time is also a sign of low self-esteem, or lack of self-confidence. Eye contact should be made 40 to 60 % of the time in the appropriate eye zones.

     

    6.     Use facial expressions to reinforce communication.

    Your face is the focal point of conversation and interaction, so the impact of its movements and expressions is magnified. The face is a tool for communicating emotions and feelings, but it is also important for regulating and directing an interaction. Once you have started a conversation with another person, your facial expressions help to encourage, or conversely, discourage further interest and interaction.

    Being overly expressive, on the other hand, can detract from your credibility.

    In situations where you want to maximize your authority–minimize your movements and animation—especially if the audience is comprised mostly of men.  When you appear calm and contained, you look more powerful.

      7.  Give a warm smile.

    Smiling is a powerful and positive nonverbal cue for signaling likeability and friendliness. It is especially important to smile when you are meeting someone, since it signals a sincere interest in meeting them. Women, however, should be aware that excessive smiling can make them appear less credible in the professional arena.

     8.     Offer a firm handshake.

    A handshake can produce a high degree of trust within a matter of seconds; and the power of the handshake should never be underestimated. In the Western Culture, the only acceptable physical touching when you are meeting someone in business for the first time is the handshake. And, even with handshakes, there are many variations of the “basic” handshake. The most important thing to keep in mind, if you want to make a positive impression and convey confidence, is to firmly clasp the other person’s hand when shaking hands. Squeeze until you feel their muscles tighten, then stop.

    9.      Create a credible, professional vocal image.  

    Voice is an important part of the nonverbal behaviors and cues that you both send and receive. Most people don’t know or understand the nonverbal influence of their voice. Before you meet someone for the first time, more than likely you have spoken to them on the telephone. Thus, the opinions they form of you are based on one thing only—your voice. It is vital, therefore, that you project the correct vocal image.  Speak with optimal volume; articulate clearly; avoid mumbling; avoid filler words and sloppy words. Sound confident in what you are saying, avoiding up-speak and excessive apologies.

     10.  Use gestures to reinforce communication.

    If you want to appear comfortable and unguarded, your gestures need to start talking when you begin to speak.  Don’t think about your gestures; they should appear natural and reinforce what you are saying.

    Hand gestures make people listen to you. They make people pay attention to the acoustics of speech, according to Spence Kelly, a professor at Colgate University. Use them sparingly at key moments. When you gesture too much or too expansively, it can be distracting and detract from your message.

    I agree with the body language experts who recommend gesturing to no higher than the top of your chest, and no lower than the bottom of your waist. However, some body language experts believe the power sphere extends to your face.

    There are two problems of understanding non-verbal communication:
    • firstly, in linguistic and verbal communication, the process of transmitting and receiving information is realized by both parties, while in non-verbal communication it is carried out at the unconscious or subconscious levels – this introduces some complication in understanding this phenomenon and raises the question of the justification for using the concept of “communication”. Therefore, some consider it acceptable to use, when it comes to non-verbal communication, another concept of “non-verbal behavior”, understanding it as the behavior of an individual that carries certain information in itself, regardless of whether the individual is aware of it or not;
    • secondly, in many scientific works there is confusion in the concepts of “non-verbal communication”, “non-verbal communication”, “non-verbal behavior”, most often used as synonyms. However, it is important to separate these concepts and clarify the context. According to the definition proposed by V. A. Labunskaya, “non-verbal communication is a type of communication that is characterized by the use of non-verbal behavior and non-verbal communication as the main means of transmitting information, organizing interaction, forming an image and concept of a partner, exercising influence on another person.” Therefore, the concept of “non-verbal communication” is broader than the concept of “non-verbal communication”.

    Associated with this problem are both well-established truths and questions that are still unanswered. It has been established that non-verbal ways of communication have two types of source of origin:
    • biological evolution;
    • culture.

    Why do we need non-verbal means of communication?

    Non-verbal means of communication are needed in order to:
    1) regulate the course of the communication process, create psychological contact between partners;
    2) enrich the meanings conveyed by words, guide the interpretation of a verbal text;

One thing can definitely be stated for sure: the expansion or contraction of the pupils, which occurs as a response to excitation, occurs involuntarily, without taking into account consciousness, the autonomic nervous system is involved in this. If the direction of the gaze can still be somehow controlled, then changing the pupils is beyond our control. When we talk about a person: “he has expressive eyes”, “she has an evil look”, “she jinxed me”, then we mean exactly the information obtained through non-verbal communication when observing a person’s pupils. Children abandoned by their parents have a dry, distant look, filled with the pain of loneliness, which gives them an adult expression. On the contrary, beloved and caressed babies look at the world in a completely different way.

    Longitude of gaze can indicate the degree of interest. Staring, inseparable will tell you about the intention to find out some information from you or force you to obey. For couples in love, such a look serves as a signal to begin active courtship. If a close look is directed at a sleeping person, subconsciously he may experience anxiety, even wake up. Interestingly, in the animal world, a gaze serves as a signal for an impending attack, so there is nothing surprising when, feeling such a signal from an unfamiliar person, you experience anxiety and a desire to hide. Relations that form this pole are characterized by “folded” eye contact, frequent and quick glances at the partner, as well as a rather persistent search for the partner’s gaze (looking into the eyes when the other does not want to make visual contact).
    . “Valence”. On its positive pole there are relations of “emotional closeness” (goodwill, sympathy, friendship, disposition), and on the negative – relations of “emotional coldness” (hostility, negativism, suspicion, hostility). The relations of the “valence” group are transmitted through the intensity, frequency, duration of eye contact, but mainly the modality of the gaze and its psychophysiological characteristics testify to these relations. Hostility is transmitted not only through a gaze, but also through such indicators as coldness, harshness, etc., and friendliness is expressed through warm, affectionate eyes.

    Facial Expressions

    The first, and most obvious, clue to nonverbal communication is a person’s facial expressions.

    Even though we only have one face, it can exhibit a wealth of expressions. From a half smile, to a full-blown smirk, to a casual eye shift, our facial expressions demonstrate a range of emotions. Instead of delving into all the nuances like a quirk of the lip or a twitch of the eye, let’s take a look at the three most prominent expressions:

    1. Smiling – A smile generally indicates happiness or contentment.
    2. Scowling – A scowl or frown indicates discontentment or frustration.
    3. Lack of Expression – An expressionless face can indicate, at a minimum, two things. First, this can be an indication or disinterest or boredom. Second, and perhaps worse, an expressionless face can indicate disdain.

    An expressionless face is hard to decipher, so if you suspect you’re exhibiting what’s known as a “stone” face, it might be nice to pop in a gentle smile from time to time.

    Eye Contact

    People place a lot of stock in eye contact. If you’re talking to someone and they don’t look up at you at all, you’re going to feel put-off and ignored. But, the fact that someone’s looking down a lot can also mean they’re shy. Someone lacking in confidence tends to have trouble making and maintaining eye contact.

    If you struggle with eye contact, it’s the kind of thing you have to practice in order to improve. Like public speaking, it must be practiced. And it’s a nice skill to have, because it allows people to see you’re engaged and interested in what they have to say.

    Of course, extended stretches of eye contact can have the opposite effect; it can make people feel uncomfortable. You’ll find the happy medium the more you practice.

    Gestures and Movement

    While the face is a dead giveaway for mood, the entire body is a barometer. Have you ever watched a heated debate through a glass conference room? Here are some of the things you might’ve witnessed:

    • Frequent and even wild hand gestures
    • Finger pointing
    • Arms waving in the air
    • Raking fingers through their hair
    • Invasion of personal space in order to send a message of hostility

    Interestingly, fiddling is also a sign of excitement. If someone is fiddling with their pen or coffee mug but is fully engaged with the speaker, they may have a high level of energy. In this case, fiddling is their way of letting some of that energy out. It’s kind of like someone whose leg keeps bouncing. They’re either preoccupied, or full of energy and ready to rock.

    Tone of Voice

    There’s not a lot of delineation in this example. If someone’s volume is elevated and they’re speaking rapidly, they’re-in some way-excited. Either something’s wrong or they’re amped up. On the contrary, if someone is speaking in calm, slow tones, they’re probably conveying their message without any cause for concern.

    The way we inflect our words also impacts how they’re interpreted. For example, if someone says, “I thought you were coming to Florida this weekend!” it could mean they hoped you were coming and they’re glad to see you.

    That same person can also say, “I thought you were coming to Florida this weekend,” meaning, “Why are you arriving Sunday evening? You’re late.” So, the inflection of our words conveys a message as much as the actual words we choose.

    Physical Touch

    Remember that conference room full of angry people? There was probably a lot of finger pointing and several invasions of personal space. All this indicates attack mode. Someone’s aggressively conveying they’re looking to “get you” or prove a point. In this line of attack, someone can also reach out and grab someone by the arm to shock them into attention.

    That said, we typically consider physical touch in a positive and personal light. If someone’s sitting at their desk crying, someone’s likely to put a hand on their shoulder and ask them what’s wrong. These signs of touch are meant to be comforting while forging a connection. Someone can also give a light touch to a co-worker’s arm as they say thanks.

    Our final example is a little bit more controversial. We’re taught not to judge a book by its cover. We can’t assess a person’s intelligence or demeanor by the clothes they wear.     Our everyday attire and hairstyle sends a message. Imagine a woman who always wears bright, bold tones. Perhaps she wears orange suits with red blouses or yellow skirts with royal blue shirts. This is a woman who’s not looking to be a wallflower. You can probably roll the dice on her high level of self-confidence.

    On the other hand, just because someone chooses muted tones or grays, it doesn’t mean they’re shy. They might simply prefer a simplistic style. To them, less may be more.

    Either way, how we present ourselves to people and situations tells a story. We’re told to take our hats off at the table, put a comb through our hair, and wear our Sunday best for a reason. It shows we put a little thought into the interaction.

    The study of nonverbal communication is an interesting one. There are many layers and most elements don’t follow hard and fast rules. While a raised voice means you should probably tune in, not every crossed arm is meant to send a negative sign.

    Should nonverbal communication be studied and added to your emotion communication toolbox?
    The answer is an overwhelming yes. Nonverbal communication makes up anywhere from 65–95 percent of our communication. An audition requiring only a reaction from you brings it to 100 percent. Since we are in the communication business, it makes sense that all actors master this nonverbal language. 

    It’s what you’re not saying within the silence that often speaks the loudest. A slight clamping and lifting of the corner of the lip can send a message of contempt or skepticism. The rate of blinking can suggest interest, hostility, or distress. Your scent, what you’re wearing, and your posture are all sending messages and are interpreted by casting. It’s this nonverbal information that differentiates the skilled actor from the unskilled or unprepared. 

    The nonverbal information we send out through our body, voice, face, and appearance is called “nonverbal behaviors.” Nonverbal behaviors spring from our attitudes, cultural upbringing, and are reactions to things we deem to be important to our well-being either in a positive or negative way.
    The following is a quick overview of eight types of unspoken communication and behaviors that you can use as a checklist and reminder for your next audition.  

    1. Your face. The majority of your nonverbal communication will come from your facial expressions. Some facial expressions are just random muscle movement without meaning and only serve to confuse the viewer. However, facial expressions associated with surprise, fear, happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, and contempt are universally recognized. Used appropriately, they inform the viewer what you are feeling at any given moment. Some facial reactions are also used for punctuating words or phrases, such as raising your eyebrows to comment on how big something really was.

    2. Your hands. Movements that express some kind of thought or process of thinking are calledgestures. Some gestures occur with speech, such as using your fingers when counting out loud or perhaps to emphasize a word or phrase. Others, like pointing or waving, are recognizable without words. Gestures are expressed primarily with your hands, however, can occur in the head, body, or even your face. This may include nodding your head “yes,” a shoulder shrug implying that you “don’t know,” or a wink of the eye suggesting “game on.” 

    3. Your voice. Vocal communication separate from the actual words you speak is referred to as paralinguistics. This includes tone of voice, volume, inflection, and pitch. It can also include yawns, laughs, grunts, and pauses. Consider the powerful effect your tone of voice can have on the meaning of a sentence. When said in a strong tone of voice, listeners might interpret approval and enthusiasm. The same words said in a hesitant tone might convey lack of interest or confidence.

    4. Your body. Unlike facial expressions, body language doesn’t tell us what emotion you’re feeling, but rather, how well you’re coping with the emotion felt. Things that we find frightening or distasteful, we tend to move away from. Heavy swallowing or licking your lips, touching your hair or sprawling out on a couch can be signs of stress, interest, or feelings of superiority.

    5. Personal space. The amount of distance we need and the amount of space we perceive as belonging to us is referred to as proxemics. The amount of space you or your character needs is influenced by a number of factors including social norms, situational factors, personality characteristics, and level of familiarity. Just a slight moving in towards your partner, reader, or the camera can enhance intimacy. 

    6. Your eyes. Looking, staring, and blinking, also known as eye gaze, is an important nonverbal cue. When people encounter people or things that they like, the rate of blinking increases and pupils dilate. On the other hand, when angered, the gaze gets harder and the blink rate will decrease or stop completely. An increase in the blink rate for no apparent reason sends a clear message that you are either not prepared, not connected, or experiencing high anxiety.  

    7. Your touch.  Communicating through touch is known as haptics. It’s another important nonverbal behavioral cue to think about. Touch can be used to communicate a range of information and feelings such as affection, familiarity, sympathy, desire, etc. 

    8. Your look. The choice of color, clothing, hairstyles, and other factors affecting how you look fall under the category of appearance. Appearance can also alter physiological reactions, judgments, and interpretations. Just think of all the subtle judgments you quickly make about someone based on his or her appearance. The first impression you make in your audition is important and lasting. 

    It’s how you react to an event or situation—your attitude or behavior under certain circumstances—that makes your performance memorable.     Nonverbal Communication: Definition, Types, Importance (Explained)

    The nonverbal way is the most commonly used communication medium in the world in culture.

    Sometimes we may not know the exact name of those but we use them almost every time.

    Nonverbal behaviors enjoy close to zero formality, however depending on the situation.

    What is Nonverbal Communication

    Non-verbal communication occurs without using any oral or written word.

    Instead of written or oral words, it relies on various non-verbal cues like physical movements, tasks, colors, signs, symbols, signals charts, etc. to express feelings, attitudes or information.

    Although no word is used in non-verbal communication, it can effectively communicate many human feelings more accurately than verbal methods of communication.

    Common types of nonverbal communication are;  eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, posture and body orientation, body language, touch, para-linguistic, silence.

    Eye contact

    Eye contact, an important channel of interpersonal communication, helps regulate the flow of communication. And it signals interest in others.

    Furthermore,

    Eye contact with audiences increases the speaker’s credibility. Teachers who make eye contact open the flow of communication and convey interest, concern, warmth, and credibility.

    Facial expressions

    The face is an important communicator. It is commonly said that the face is the index of the mind.

    It expresses the type of emotions or feelings such as joy, love, interest, sorrow, anger, annoyance, confusion, enthusiasm, fear, hatred surprise, and uncertainty.

    Facial expressions are indicated through the mouth (open, wide or closed), eyelids (raised or lowered), nose (wrinkled or relaxed), cheeks (drawn up or back) and the forehead (lowered or raised).

    Within the facial area, eyes are especially effective for indicating attention and interest. However, interpretations of facial expressions differ from culture to culture.

    Smiling is a powerful cue that transmits:

    • Happiness.
    • Friendliness.
    • Warmth.
    • Liking.
    • Affiliation.

    Thus, if you smile frequently you will be perceived as more likable, friendly, warm and approachable.

    Smiling is often contagious and students will react favorably and learn more.

    Gestures

    If you fail to gesture while speaking, you may be perceived as boring, stiff and un-animated.

    A lively and animated teaching style captures students’ attention, makes the material more interesting, facilitates learning and provides a bit of entertainment.

    Head nods, a form of gestures, communicate positive reinforcement to students and indicate that you are listening.

    Gestures are movements of the arms, legs, hands, and head.7 Some authors opine that gesture is the deliberate body movement because they express specific and intentional meaning.

    For example;

    a wave of the hand has a specific meaning-“hello” or “good-bye”; a forefinger and a thumb touching to form a circle have the meaning -“ok”.

    Alike facial expressions, interpretations of some gestures also differ across cultures.

    For example, in Europe, raising thumb is used to convey that someone has done something excellent while in Bangladesh the same gesture means something idiotic.

    Posture and body orientation

    You communicate numerous messages by the way you walk, talk, stand and sit.

    Standing erect, but not rigid, and leaning slightly forward communicates to students that you are approachable, receptive and friendly.

    Furthermore,

    Interpersonal closeness results when you and your students face each other.

    Speaking with your back turned or looking at the floor or ceiling should be avoided; it communicates disinterest to your class.

    Body Language

    Body language is another widely recognized form of non-verbal communication. Body movements can convey meanings and messages. Body language may take two forms of unconscious movements and consciously controlled movements.

    For example;

    When a person is bored, he may gaze around the room rather than look at the speaker or he may shift positions frequently.

    When a person is nervous, he may bite his nails or mash hair. These are usually made unconsciously. On the other hand, leaning forward toward the speaker to express interest is the case of conscious body movements.

    Space and Distance

    Space and distance are significant non-verbal tools in the case of organizational communication.

    A spacious and well-decorated room indicates a person’s position in the organization hierarchy and external people get a message about his importance and authority only by visiting his room.

    Distance is another communication tool, which expresses the degree of intimacy and individual acceptance.

    Proximity

    Cultural norms dictate a comfortable distance for interaction with students.

    You should look for signals of discomfort caused by invading students’ space. Some of these are:

    • Rocking
    • Leg swinging
    • Tapping
    • Gaze aversion

    Typically, in large college classes space invasion is not a problem. There is usually too much distance.

    To counteract this, move around the classroom to increase interaction with your students.

    Increasing proximity enables you to make better eye contact and increases the opportunities for students to speak.

    Para-linguistic

    This facet of nonverbal communication includes such vocal elements as:

    • Tone
    • Pitch
    • Rhythm
    • Timbre
    • Loudness
    • Inflection

    For maximum teaching effectiveness, learn to vary these six elements of your voice.

    One of the major criticisms is of instructors who speak in a monotone. Listeners perceive these instructors as boring and dull.

    Students report that they learn less and lose interest more quickly when listening to teachers who have not learned to modulate their voices.

    Humor

    Humor is often overlooked as a teaching tool, and it is too often not encouraged in college classrooms. Laughter releases stress and tension for both instructor and student.

    You should develop the ability to laugh at yourself and encourage students to do the same. It fosters a friendly environment that facilitates learning.

    Adequate knowledge of the subject matter is crucial to your success; however, it’s not the only crucial element.

    Creating a climate that facilitates learning and retention demands good nonverbal and verbal skills.

    Touch

    Touch is a widely used form of non-verbal communication tool.

    By touching, one can express a wide range of emotions. However, the accepted modes of touch vary depending on the gender, age, relative status, intimacy and cultural background of the persons.

    For example, in the context of our culture, when one touches you from the back of the examination hall, your understanding is that he wants to know something.

    Silence

    Silence is a powerful tool for communication. It may have a positive or negative meaning.

    In a classroom, silence indicates that students are listening carefully and attentively. In the same way, through silence one can communicate his lack of interest or a failure to understand.

    For example, silence often indicates that a person receiving instruction does not understand the action required or sometimes silence indicates consent.

    Personal Appearance

    Appearance is also an important non-verbal communication tool. Appearance includes dress, hair, jewelry, makeup, belt buckles and so on.

    Appearance indicates the degree of importance or interest a person conveys to an occasion. Through uniform, we can identify a student, a doctor, a lawyer, a police officer, etc.

    In an organization, one’s dress is keenly observed to see whether it conforms to accepted standards of appearance. As an example, workers may wear different clothes when they are on strike than they do when they are working.

    Symbol

    A symbol is something that represents an idea, a physical entity or a process but is distinct from it. The purpose of a symbol is to communicate meaning.

    For example, a red octagon may be a symbol for “stop”.

    On a map, a picture of a tent might represent a campsite. Numerals are symbols for numbers. Personal names are symbols representing individuals. A red rose symbolizes love and compassion.

    Visual Communication

    When communication occurs using any visual aids, it is known as visual communication.

    Thus, communication that occurs through facial expression, personal appearance, gesture, posture, printed picture, sign, signal, symbol, map, poster, slide, chart, diagram, graph, etc. is called visual communication.

    For example, to indicate ‘danger’, we use red sign; to mean ‘dangerous’, we use a skull placed between two pieces of bone put in crosswise fashion; to indicate ‘no smoking’, we use an image showing a lighted cigarette with a cross mark on it.

    Importance of Nonverbal Communication

    Some important points expressing the importance, necessity, advantages or functions of non-verbal communication are discussed below:

    Well Expression of the Speaker’s Attitude

    Various non-verbal cues of the speaker like physical movements, facial expression, a way of expression, etc. play an important role in expressing the inner meaning of the messages in face-to-face conversation and interview.

    For example, the facial expression of the speaker indicates his attitude, determination depth of knowledge, etc.

    Providing Information Regarding the Sender of The Written Message

    The format, neatness, language and the appearance of the envelope used in a written message send a non-verbal message regarding the writer’s tests, choice, level of education, etc.

    Expressing the Attitude of the Listener and Receiver

    Sometimes the appearance of the listeners and receivers conveys their attitudes, feelings, and thoughts regarding the messages they have read or heard.

    Gaining Knowledge about a Class of People

    Clothing, hairstyle, neatness, jewelry, cosmetics, and stature of people convey impressions regarding their occupation, age, nationality, social or economic level, job status, etc.

    For example; students, policemen, nurses, etc. can easily be identified through their dresses.

    Gaining Knowledge about the Status of a Person

    Non-verbal cues also help to determine the relative status of persons working in an organization. For example, room size, location, furnishings, decorations, lightings, etc. indicate the position of a person in the organization.

    Communicating Common Message to All People

    In some cases, non-verbal cues can effectively express many true messages more accurately than those of any other method of communication.

    For example; the use of red, yellow and green lights and the use of various signs in controlling vehicles on the roads.

    Communicating with the Handicapped People

    Non- verbal cues of communication greatly help in communicating with the handicapped people.

    For example; the language of communication with the deaf depends on the movements of the hands, fingers, and eyeballs.

    Conveying Message to the Illiterate People

    Communication with illiterate people through written media is impossible. There may also be some situations that do not allow the use of oral media to communicate with them.

    In such situations, non-verbal methods like pictures, colors, graphs, signs, and symbols are used as the media of communication.

    For example; to indicate danger we use red sign and to mean dangerous we use a skull placed between two pieces of bone put in a crosswise fashion.

    Quick Expression of Message

    Non-verbal cues like sign and symbol can also communicate some messages very quickly than written or oral media.

    For example; when drivers of a running vehicle are to be communicated that the road ahead is narrow or there is a turn in the road ahead, we generally use signs or symbols rather than using any written or oral message.

    Presenting Information Precisely

    Sometimes quantitative information on any issue may require a lengthy written message. But this quantitative information can be presented easily and precisely through tables, graphs, charts, etc.

    Conclusion

    To improve your nonverbal skills, record your speaking on videotape. Then ask a colleague in communications to suggest refinements.

    Non-verbal communication can take many forms depending on the situation, the ability of communicators, etc.

    According to one estimate, there are more than 0.70 million forms of non-verbal communication. The most common forms of non-verbal communication are as follows.

    Learning to understand non-verbal means of communication

    Non-verbal means of communication are an important element of human communication. Every day, talking with relatives, friends, work colleagues, we use the basic techniques of information transfer and extralinguistic means of communication. Non-verbal communication is body and gesture language that helps express thoughts and feelings without the use of spoken language.

    The language of the body and gestures, unlike other speech means, has a unique property of transmitting information to the subconscious. It accounts for up to 80% of the transfer of information to the interlocutor. Non-verbal means of communication are needed in order to know the thoughts and intentions of a person. To do this, just look at the manner of speaking and gesticulating.

    It is necessary to learn to understand non-verbal means of communication in practice for two reasons:

    • Oral speech of a person conveys only specific knowledge. This is not enough to express an emotional state. Therefore, the psychological state of a person, the emotions and feelings experienced are transmitted only through non-verbal communication.
    • In conversational communication, there is no ability to control oneself. Non-verbal communication helps to know the thoughts and feelings of the interlocutor, due to the spontaneous unconscious reaction of the subconscious.

    Control over spoken words, simulated facial expressions will not give a full-fledged result for hiding information. A person can give himself away by accident, losing control over intonation, sound of voice, or using incorrect gestures. People trust non-verbal means of communication because they are less controllable than spoken language.

    Thanks to numerous psychological studies, a classification of non-verbal means of communication has appeared:

    • Spatial means – this is the movement of the interlocutor in space, its placement relative to other people and objects, maintaining distance and orientation.
    • Visual aids – a person’s gaze, its direction and duration.
    • Tactile means – these include tactile contact, hand touch, kiss, push.
    • Expressive – expressive means – it can be facial expressions, gestures, body movement and other gestural communication techniques.

    In non-verbal communication, there is the concept of prosodic and extralinguistics. Prosodic means help to create the image of the interlocutor, his manner of speaking, expressing feelings and other elements of individuality. The concept of prosodic elements of communication includes the rhythmic and intonational part of colloquial speech, pitch, tone and stress.

    The concept of extralinguistics is the use of pauses in colloquial speech and other physiological tricks: laughter, crying, sighing. Prosodic and extralinguistic sciences study the speech flow, complement the conversation, expressing the psychological and emotional state of a person.

    Functions of non-verbal means of communication

    Most people pay insufficient attention to non-verbal means of communication. When talking, the attitude towards the interlocutor develops on an intuitive level, so during the conversation discomfort or anxiety may appear. Some people regard this as intuition, although in fact such signals are sent to us by the brain when it observes a mismatch between spoken speech and gestures.

    Non-verbal communication can be conscious or unconscious. The conscious are controlled by the person, the unconscious are not. It has long been known that the tongue can lie, but not the body, so psychologists and psychoanalysts pay attention to unconscious movements when working with patients. Non-verbal means of communication play an important role in human life, performing the main functions of communication.

    Body language and gestures perform the following functions:

    • Help to understand one’s own or someone else’s behavior, are a guide in a person’s social life.
    • They are a means of expressing the mental state of a person.
    • Necessary for interaction between people, expressing attitudes towards each other, helping to solve and interpret everyday or business situations.
    • Helps to give an emotional coloring to the conversation, enhance the effect of the spoken speech.
    • It is an indicator of a person’s status, shows his role in society.
    • Perform the functions of creating a psychological portrait and image of the interlocutor.

    Characteristics of non-verbal means of communication

    When communicating with people, it is necessary to pay attention to the following elements and techniques of non-verbal communication:

    • Gestures.

    Sign language is the oldest method of human communication and is the movement of the hands and head. Gestures can be arbitrary and involuntary. Voluntary refers to the conscious movement of the hands, and to involuntary – reflex or congenital. These gestures perform the functions of replacing or supplementing colloquial speech or emphasizing what was said to the interlocutor.

    The same gestures differ in meaning depending on the culture. The desire to convey information as quickly as possible, as well as the increased emotional state of a person, leads to active gestures during a conversation. Gesticulation can be:

    • Descriptive – gestures acquire meaning only during the interaction of speech and movement.
    • Modal – they give an assessment and express their attitude to ongoing events. These are gestures of approval, trust or protest.
    • Communicative – judgments include gestures used in greeting, farewell, to draw the attention of others, to deny something.

    Examples of gestures in practice

    • Touching the ear during a conversation means not wanting to listen to the interlocutor, such behavior may be the result of boredom or disagreement with what was said.
    • Open mouth – is interpreted as holding back thoughts when a person has something to say, but he does not know whether it is worth doing.
    • If the interlocutor is uncomfortable, he experiences emotional stress when communicating or talking on the phone, he touches his neck, clothes, twists small objects in his hand, rings on his hand.
    • Mimic.

    Facial expressions in non-verbal communication are used to convey feelings and represent the movement of the facial muscles. Conducted tests in practice have shown that the absence of emotions on the face during a conversation leads to the loss of 15% of the spoken information. The main mimic role is played by the lips and eyebrows of a person. To express anger, disgust, joy, fear, sadness, surprise, the muscles of the face act harmoniously and holistically.

    • Visual communications.

    Visual interactions between people play an important role during information transfer. Glance helps to focus attention on the speaking person. During a conversation, people look into each other’s eyes for an average of 10 seconds. Less time is considered disrespectful and a challenge. When speaking, the listener looks at the interlocutor longer than the speaker. The look is associated with the formation of thoughts during the transfer of information, when a thought is formed, a person does not look at the interlocutor, when he knows what he wants to say, he pays attention to him.

    Visual contact is divided into the following categories, it can be:

    • Social – the focus of the gaze fluctuates around the eyes and mouth.
    • Business – during a business meeting, making a report, or speaking to the public, the speaker looks at the forehead of the interlocutor, thereby showing respect and attention to him.
    • Intimate – the interlocutor looks into the eyes or below the face.

    A person’s face conveys the most accurate psychological state, even in a photo. But it is not so reliable, because it can be controlled by a person. With its help, it is easier to deceive the interlocutor, depicting the necessary range of feelings.

    • Tactile products.

    Tactile means of communication include the science of takeshiki. She learns touch while talking. Tactile means are necessary for normal communication between people and are determined by factors such as status, age, gender, and the level of people’s trust.

    Incorrect frequent use of tactile means leads to conflict situations between people and a hostile attitude.

    • Pos.

    Posture is the position of the human body. There are many poses that show the attitude of people towards others. It is noticed that high-ranking persons take a more relaxed pose. The adopted posture is interpreted depending on its semantic content. She talks about the closeness of a person or a willingness to conduct a dialogue.

    Arms crossed indicate unwillingness to let the interlocutor close. When communicating with a person who has taken such a pose, one should speak briefly and to the point. The closed position of the hands indicates the barrier that they symbolize when talking. This is not a trusting position; it will turn out to be an offer to take something in hand or support.

    A pose with uncrossed arms and legs is considered trusting and friendly. In an attentive interlocutor, the body is directed towards the speaker, the hands are free and not clenched into fists. A person interested in the conversation gradually approaches or leans towards the conversation, if there is no desire to listen, then on the contrary, he leans back, moves away. A reliable way to attract attention is the repetition of gestures, postures of the interlocutor.

    Non-verbal means of enhancing business status

    The environment between people plays the role of a background during a conversation. Business status can be improved with the help of a specially selected interior. For the head of the company, the office is his second person. The situation at the workplace is able to show the reliability of the company and its success.

    Non-verbal status enhancements include the manager’s office or equipment in the office. You should carefully monitor the “appearance” of the office, as the lack of order and the presence of slovenliness in the workplace will cause distrust of customers and visitors.

    Special rules have been developed to improve business status:

    • The workplace must be kept clean and tidy, the presence of unnecessary items and scattered papers on the table is unacceptable.
    • The lunch break is held in a specially designated place. Eating at your desk looks ugly, if there is a need to dine in the absence of other people.
    • Drinking coffee or tea at work is better from glassware, not from plastic cups.
    • Don’t fill your office with unnecessary things, it looks tasteless and only clutters up the room.
    • Look at the workplace from the perspective of the visitor, make sure that it is pleasant to be in your office.

    Properly selected office equipment can significantly improve business status. The larger the chair of the boss, the higher he seems in the eyes of his subordinates. It should be of good quality and high back. Chairs of workers or visitors, on the contrary, are smaller. You should not keep flowers in your office, let them stand in the waiting room. Also among the non-verbal tricks of raising the status are decorative elements. They should have a neutral look and be discreet.

    Lesson 4. Non-verbal means of communication

    Every day, communicating with people around us, we use for this a huge number of a wide variety of techniques and techniques that we ourselves are not even aware of. And our ability to communicate is expressed not only in the fact that we can think, correctly express our thoughts, select words suitable for each specific situation and strive to understand the interlocutor.

    In many ways, the quality of our communication depends on its non-verbal component, ie. on how well we are able to exchange information with other people without using language and speech means for this. Non-verbal communication consists of special physiological processes that accompany the verbal communication process and affect it qualitatively.

    But besides the fact that there are non-verbal processes, there are also special techniques that allow these processes to be controlled. And you need to manage them in order to become a “convenient” interlocutor for him when communicating with any person, which allows you to build the most durable “bridge” of effective contact and mutual understanding. The most effective of these techniques is the subject of the fourth lesson on NLP, which you have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with at the moment.

    In this lesson you will learn about nonverbal communication and what rapport is in psychology and how rapport is established. We’ll talk about tuning, mirroring, and even a bit of hypnosis in Neuro Linguistic Programming. In addition, non-verbal techniques such as the Milton model and the categories of Virginia Satir will be considered, and for clarity and ease of perception of the material, some examples will be given.

    Attachment and mirroring

    To begin with, it is worth noting that NLP attaching and mirroring refers to special ways of non-verbal communication that allow you to attune with the interlocutor, the purpose of which, of course, is more effective communication and better mutual understanding.

    A fundamental factor in joining and mirroring is the person’s body language, ie. what he consciously or unconsciously does with his body during communication. To establish a non-verbal connection with a person, you need to pay attention to him (his posture, hand and head movements, gestures, etc.) and, so to speak, copy him. But copying can happen in two ways: attaching and mirroring.

    Accession – repetition of actions performed by a person in full accordance with their characteristics.

    EXAMPLE: If a person is standing with his back against the wall and cross-legged, placing the right in front of the left, then you should stand in exactly the same position, leaning with your back against the wall and cross-legged, placing the right in front of the left.

    Mirroring – repetition of actions performed by a person, reflecting all their features in a mirror image.

    EXAMPLE: If a person is sitting across from you with their right foot over their left, with their right hand under their chin and their left hand on the arm of a chair, you should sit with their left foot over their right, their left hand under their chin and their right holding on to the armrest of the chair.

    The method of copying the physiological characteristics of human behavior can be chosen based on the behavior of the interlocutor. Attachment is more convenient to use when you are very close to the person. Mirroring is best used while you are sitting or standing opposite each other.

    It is important to always remember that your desire to match or mirror the other person must be minimal, otherwise he will suspect oddities in your behavior, and this, in turn, will prevent you from establishing attunement.

    Adapting to a person should be skillful and careful: if, for example, you need to move, then you should do it slowly, in small steps. During the conversation, you need to pay attention to the very rhythm in which the partner functions. If you see that he is relaxed and fully involved in the conversation, then you can safely join or mirror.

    There is one more way to veil joining or mirroring – it is deliberately slowing down one’s actions or maintaining some pause between the person’s actions and one’s own. Here the meaning lies in the fact that the person himself does not notice that the adjustment is being carried out under him, but his subconscious mind fixes this and gives the appropriate signals.

    Often, NLP practitioners resort to copying the facial expression of the person with whom they communicate. This is very convenient in view of the fact that your interlocutor does not see his face at the moment, which means that he will not be able to determine that you are copying him. At the same time, his subconscious mind, noticing that you are experiencing the same emotions as him (because you have the same facial expression!) will allow you to attune with him.

    An excellent way to mirror a person or join him is also to copy his voice, breathing rhythm, predicate words. But your attunement should be complex, and not include one thing (voice copying, movement repetition, etc.), because. to synchronize with the interlocutor you should try completely.

    It is worth mentioning the fundamental differences between joining and mirroring. The process of joining is a little more complicated, because. the product of calibration (adjustment to the interlocutor) includes only the general characteristics of the one in relation to whom it is carried out. But then you have the flexibility – you can show imagination and enthusiasm in the calibration process. And mirroring, although it occurs according to a simpler scheme (specifically, copying voice, posture, speech tempo, etc. ), does not allow you to be flexible during attunement.

    Therefore, before you start joining or mirroring, it is important to take into account all the above features and decide on the appropriate calibration method based on this, and any attempts you make will look natural only if you make them slowly and methodically.

    The next non-verbal communication technique we’ll be looking at is Virginia Satir’s categories and tuning to them.

    Categories Virginia Satir

    Virginia Satir was one of the world’s leading psychologists and family therapists. And the foundations of her work were used at the very beginning of the formation of NLP. During her career, she wrote many works in these areas, and also gave lectures. In the process of practice, she noticed that all people, as a rule, belong to one of the five categories of linguistic behavior.

    These types are accusing, fawning, calculating, aloof and balanced. All of them reflect the main styles in communication and provide a solid amount of data on how a person prefers to interact with others. Let’s consider these categories in more detail:

    1

    Accusing. People in this category tend to look for people who can be blamed for things not going the way they should. They project their experiences onto others, calling them different words, pointing fingers at them, and using stern gestures. Their main motivation is to show others their “place” and chastise. Blaming people are usually very lonely.

    Ingratiating. The peculiarity of ingratiating people is that they mirror the accusers, also wanting to shift the blame on someone. But they do it a little differently: despite the fact that they shift the responsibility to others, they make an effort to ensure that they themselves are perceived as very pleasant and positive people. Moreover, they can even take the blame for something in order to whitewash themselves. Fawning people often point to cause and effect relationships, use a lot of non-specific verbs (saying nothing specific about how something was done) and modal operators (can, can’t, must, must, etc.), but do not use harsh gestures.

    Calculating. People of this type prefer to hide their emotions so as not to give away their true reactions or intentions. They are rational, unemotional, possess self-control. Others often perceive them as indifferent, alienated, cold, insensitive. Responsibility is relieved by moving the conversation into a more general direction and using “you” messages, i.e. phrases that make others feel guilty. Due to the peculiarities of their personality, such people often live alone.

    Suspended. Such people can play the role of accusing, fawning, and prudent. It is because of their ability to switch from one type to another that they are called detached. In life situations, they try to act as the situation dictates to them. In speech, generalizations are often used, they do not talk about anything specifically, they mean something more by their own words.

    Balanced. People belonging to this type can be described as the most adequate and based only on facts. They express everything exactly as they see fit and right, often telling the truth in person, thereby causing negative emotions in others. This, perhaps, is the only negative in the general characteristics of balanced people.

    You can recognize any of these five types by being careful in observing people’s body language. For example, accusing people mostly show signs of visuals, fawning people are kinesthetics, and calculating people are digital. The detached, in turn, reflect all types of representational systems and can represent either one or the other. Simply put, you will be able to categorize a person as Satyr after spending some time with them.

    The fact is that most often all the mental characteristics of a person manifest themselves unconsciously and it is rather problematic to disguise them, so you need to be extremely attentive to any of their manifestations, and especially physical ones. But there is no need to hurry with the definition of the category either. With experience, a new skill will be perfected and there will be more opportunities to apply it.

    And remember that while communicating with other people, you must also show attention to yourself, because. you yourself behave, based on a predisposition to one of the categories.

    Speaking about the categories according to Satir, one should certainly say about how to adapt to these categories, because. This process has a number of important features.

    Satyr Category Matching

    Satyr Category Matching in NLP is different from simply matching predicate words when you try to fit into the other person’s representational system, as adjustment to categories, on the contrary, can interrupt the established connection with another person, and strengthen the manner of behavior demonstrated by him.

    Based on the words of Virginia Satir herself, when adjusting to people of different categories, you should always disconnect from them, except in cases with people of a balanced category. So, for example, talking with an accusing person from the position of the same accuser, one can only achieve a tense argument. It is not practical to fawn in front of the fawning one, because this will lead to mutual lamentation for life. To be detached, communicating with a detached person, means to introduce confusion and misunderstanding into communication.

    Following the manner of the prudent in contact with the prudent will lead to nothing but an exchange of dry phrases and formulaic expressions. Hence it follows that effective connection is possible only with people of a balanced category.

    So what’s the best way to fine-tune Satir categories? Note the following:

    It is best to start tuning from the position of a prudent person, because in communication, he is vague and once again does not take risks. This tactic allows you to more accurately and slowly determine the position of the other person.
    Try to avoid acting as a detached person, otherwise others may get the wrong impression of you as a person who may have some problems with himself.
    Keep in mind that there is always a discrepancy between what a person actually feels and what he says, as well as how it is expressed on a physiological level.
    Do not jump to conclusions, but rather observe people, listen to them and compare what you have been able to note with what you know about each of the categories.
    Having approximately established the category to which a person belongs, methodically begin to use the methods of communication and influence that are suitable for this category. If something is not confirmed, then perhaps one should try to apply techniques that are effective for another category, because assessment (especially at the very beginning of practice) may not be given correctly.

    And a few more words about categories

    Almost all people are used to functioning in a certain mode, i.e. feel comfortable performing all actions from the position of the most preferred category. But there is one caveat: none of the categories is effective on its own and in stressful situations can serve as a bad way to overcome them rather than a good one, because. it limits the potential of any person. And in extraordinary or stressful situations, it is desirable to be flexible and use the maximum number of means of communication and ways of interacting with people and circumstances.

    Remember that the communication professional, knowing about the existence of categories, is not an adherent or example of any of them, but uses them all!

    Now we should talk about one of the basic concepts in NLP and psychology in general, without which not a single fact of people’s interaction with each other and the outside world can do – the next section of the article is devoted to rapport and its establishment.

    Rapport and the establishment of rapport

    Rapport in psychology and NLP is a special state between people when there is a connection, mutual understanding, trust at the internal level; specific contact and the state itself when people are in this contact.

    Simply put, rapport is an identity to another person, a similarity to him. Establishing rapport can be done by adjusting to categories according to Satir, joining, mirroring, and also perception from the second position.

    Establishing rapport

    Establishing rapport is a fundamental task in NLP. It can occur both over a long period of time and very quickly. The duration of the process itself often depends on the level of the communicator. And rapport can be achieved at two levels: conscious and unconscious.

    The sensory acuity of the communicator is also very important in establishing rapport; his ability to most effectively notice and track the non-verbal manifestations of another person, the external features of his behavior. People always send various signals that reflect their internal processes, and the development of sensory acuity makes it possible to “read” them, as well as determine the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of attunement with another person and the presence or absence of rapport with him.

    The development of sensory acuity is a serious but very interesting process. And his constant training will allow him to learn to track such features of people’s communication that were not noticed before. And in order to make this possible, you need to follow several effective recommendations :

    • During communication, try to “break” this process itself into separate components and track them.
    • Track the non-verbal features and reactions of each person.
    • Watch people carefully and listen to what they have to say.
    • Watch strangers: at work, in public places, in movies and TV shows.
    • Pay attention to the “little things”: breathing, speech rate, complexion, lip shape, voice tone and timbre.

    By improving your sensory acuity skills, you will also improve your rapport skills, as well as a deeper understanding of other people and their behavior, learn to predict further interaction, recognize lies and truth, and learn how to deliver your own messages in such a way as to evoke only the reactions you need .

    And the last question that we will analyze in the presented lesson is the Milton Erickson model, or, more simply, the Milton model. But, given that this topic is very voluminous and requires in-depth study, it would be more correct to designate the following section of the article as an introduction to the Milton model.

    Introduction to the Milton Model

    Milton Erickson is a famous American psychiatrist and psychotherapist of the mid-twentieth century. He became the founder of a unique approach to hypnotherapy, which today is called Ericksonian hypnotherapy, and is widely used throughout the world. His model proceeds from the fact that the speech and behavior of one person can influence others, introducing them into a special hypnotic state called trance (see below). But before going directly to trance, it is necessary to say something about the unconscious mind of man.

    Unconscious mind

    The very term “unconscious” is used in NLP to refer to processes that are not currently conscious. Those. the unconscious is not an object, but a process, because contains all the processes that take place outside of consciousness. The unconscious mind is associated with the basic bodily functions and thought processes. And the conscious mind, in turn, displays everything that happens inside.

    Even thinking itself occurs consciously in rare cases, because the thoughts that appear in our conscious mind are the result of unconscious thinking. And we are aware of only a small part of what is in the unconscious mind. And, as a rule, this is only what has the greatest value compared to the rest.

    The unconscious mind contains all the thoughts, fears, fears, dreams, expectations and hopes of a person. There is also all his life experience, skills and memories. The unconscious mind does not perceive direct communication, but indirect: it reflects on symbols, figurative expressions, metaphors, etc., thereby expressing itself at a deeper level.

    So how can a person access the unconscious mind and its resources? This is where the trance conversation begins.

    Trance

    Trance is a certain state of human consciousness, the peculiarity of which is the focus of attention inward. The more a person is concentrated on his inner experiences (thoughts, sensations, etc.), the less he is occupied with the outside world. And the deeper this state, the easier it is for a person to reunite with his inner world. In their everyday life, based on circumstances, people constantly switch their attention either to the inner or to the outer world, which means that they either enter a state of trance, or exit it.

    Based on the prerequisites of NLP, we can name several modes of human functioning:

    1 Downtime – a person is concentrated on the inner world.
    2 Uptime – a person is concentrated on the outside world.
    3 Dream is an extreme type of downtime, when the outer world ceases to exist and only the reality of the inner remains.

    Normally a person is usually somewhere between downtime and uptime. But here it is very important to know that these two states are neither good nor bad, and they can be assessed by analyzing your current activities. If you cross the road, swim, hold a seminar – this is the state of uptime. If you think about something, meditate, imagine something, then this is downtime. And it is undesirable to perform actions from the uptime category in the downtime state, for example, to cross the road in a half-asleep state, and to meditate while jumping on one leg.

    This implies another conclusion that trance is a special state of downtime. And while in a trance, a person may seem completely detached from the outside world, but his personal experience at this time is extremely real for him, because. a person in a trance is more aware of his unconscious processes.

    Signs of trance

    Trance can manifest itself through a number of physiological features, the most common of which are the following:

    • Muscle relaxation. A person in a state of trance practically does not move, and his movements themselves slow down and become smoother. Often such a person will be motionless for a long period of time.
    • Low tone of voice. The voice of a person in trance becomes lower due to the complete relaxation of the throat muscles.
    • Relaxed facial muscles. Due to the relaxation of the facial muscles, wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes disappear in a trance person.
    • Slow breathing and slow pulse. Due to the maximum relaxation of the muscles of the body, the heart rate decreases and the breathing process slows down.
    • Changed expression of the eyes. The gaze of a person in a trance may become absent, because. he is immersed in his inner experiences.
    • Dullness of reflexes. Ordinary human reflexes (blinking, swallowing) are observed much less often if he is in a trance. It also reduces the response to external stimuli.
    • The state of peace. A person in a trance is always in a relaxed state.

    Another indicator of trance is certain physical states that are not typical for a person in a normal state:

    Amnesia – everything that happened to a person during a trance is forgotten.
    Anesthesia – sensations of discomfort, pain are dulled.
    Hallucination – a person can see what is not and not see what is.
    Catalepsy – a person stays in the same position for a very long time without experiencing any discomfort.
    Regression – a person can return to his past and even adopt the behavior of a child.
    Curvature – space-time perception is distorted.

    Naturally, all these states characterize the state of trance, but if you pay attention to yourself, you can see that quite often we plunge into each of them in our daily life.

    Now we go directly to the Milton model.

    Milton Model

    Milton Model is a specific set of language techniques that are used to put a person into a trance or change his state in order to gain access to the resources of the unconscious mind. This is done in order to make it possible to make certain changes or resolve complex problematic situations. The Milton model was developed by the founders of NLP – John Grinder and Richard Bandler, and the experiments of Milton Erickson himself were taken as a basis.

    Milton Model Standards

    All Milton Model language standards are based on Meta Model premises and are used to induce trance and access the unconscious: learn the most. EXAMPLE. “From this NLP lesson you will easily learn….”

  • Undefined reference index allows you to make a person give the right meaning to the right people or events. EXAMPLE. “Soon a person will come who will be an important figure in your life and will be able to teach you a lot…”
  • Non-specific verbs are needed in order for a person to understand something exactly in the way that is most convenient for him. EXAMPLE. “Will you rate this…”
  • Comparisons allows you to cause the desired reactions in a person. EXAMPLE. “Every minute you relax more and more…”
  • Judgments allow a person to remember specific moments from life. EXAMPLE. “It will be very good for you if you remember the brightest and most pleasant moments…”
  • Distortions are needed in order for some action to become equivalent to some state. EXAMPLE. “Lean back in your chair and you will immediately feel better…”
  • Mind reading allows you to tune a person to the benefit of performing any action. EXAMPLE. “The material will become much clearer to you if you just read this little chapter…”
  • The nominalizations cause an action to push a person into a cycle of subsequent actions. EXAMPLE. “As you study the material, you will begin to feel more and more aware and able to practice…”
  • Cause-and-effect relationships allow you to tune a person to achieve a certain state through the performance of a specific action. EXAMPLE. “You breathe deeply, slowly inhaling and exhaling air. Gradually you relax and thoughts come to order…”
  • Assumptions set a person to perform a specific action. EXAMPLE. “I don’t know if you’ll be the same after reading this book. ..”
  • The versatility of allows you to remove conscious blockages. EXAMPLE. “You already know the solution to this problem, because your subconscious knows it…”
  • Modal operators of the capability increase a person’s self-confidence and their abilities. EXAMPLE. “You can do it! I’m sure you’ll succeed…”
  • Modal operators of necessity allow you to induce a person to action. EXAMPLE. “You just have to try it! If you want to understand the meaning, you need…”
  • And now we will talk about how to apply the Milton Model in practice, because in order to learn how to use the knowledge gained, we must have a certain structure of actions. We will consider it below.

    Applying the Milton Model

    Applying the Milton Model involves the following three phases:

    1. Following a person’s experience and putting him into a trance state
    2. Elimination of the conscious mind
    3. Access to the resources of the unconscious mind

    Let’s talk about them separately.

    Following a person’s experience and putting him into a state of trance

    The easiest way to follow is to describe to a person the experience that he receives through hearing, seeing or feeling something. During communication, you need to describe any process, not focusing on details, but giving a person the opportunity to switch to his inner world, thereby transferring him into a trance state, because a person is immersed in himself. In this case, you need to speak not loudly, calmly, so that the person does not feel discomfort. EXAMPLE: “Imagine how nice it would be if we…”

    Elimination of the conscious mind

    This stage takes as a basis several standards that direct the attention of a person inward:

    • Syntactic ambiguity – the use of words that do not clarify the meaning of the context. Basically, these are adjectives and participles. EXAMPLE: “Determined sign” (caused by you or causing something?), “Enthusiastic person” (fascinated by you or carried away by yourself?), “Lost material” (lost by you or lost at all?).
    • Scope ambiguity – Use of sentences or phrases that make it impossible to understand the exact subject of the conversation. EXAMPLE: “Older women and men” (who exactly is elderly?), “You can’t be pardoned” (what exactly to do?), “It will be good to do this” (who is good or good if you do it? Who can do it?).
    • Punctuation ambiguity – combination of separate sentences into one complex one, from which it is impossible to understand what is being said. EXAMPLE: “We think the new material has a big impact on you because your day is already going differently.”
    • Double bonds – use of sentences implying choice without choice. EXAMPLE: “You can apply new knowledge now or later, or you can not apply it at all”, etc.

    As additional techniques in the Milton model, in order to set a person to plunge into a trance state, you can use any basics of the meta model, because when used skillfully, they stimulate his attention to self-absorption.

    Access to the resources of the unconscious mind

    The methods of the Milton model suggest the possibility of obtaining access to the unconscious without causing any fears and assumptions in this regard:

    • Conversational postulates – the use of questions that imply one-word answers, but perform the function of a command. EXAMPLE: “Could you imagine…?”, “Did you know that you can read minds?” etc.
    • Label questions are special questions that are inserted at the end of the main sentence in order to motivate the person to agree with you. Using several of these questions in a row sets the person up to agree with you at all. EXAMPLE: “It’s easy, right?”, “You can do it yourself, right?”, “It’s convenient, isn’t it?” etc.
    • Built-in questions are indirect questions that are inserted during the conversation, but the interlocutor reacts as if they were asked directly. EXAMPLE: “How can I find out what exactly irritates you?”, “Could you help me by explaining the essence of your problem a little?” etc.
    • Built-in orders – indirect instructions for actions inserted into a conversation in the process of communication. EXAMPLE: “It is not known whether you can apply new knowledge in practice today”, “People with similar problems are always determined”, etc.
    • Citations – are used to highlight information obtained from third-party sources and do not give any guarantees. EXAMPLE: “A friend told me that NLP is very effective in communication”, “My friend said that meditation helps to relax”, etc.
    • Metaphors – parables, analogies, figurative expressions are one of the best ways to access the resources of the unconscious mind. EXAMPLE: “Believe me, your potential is able to unfold like a lotus flower”, “Just pay attention and see how the days fly by”, etc.
