Apple Place Room #1 is set in Miramonte, 1.3 km from Pinehurst and 3.1 km from Etheda Springs. Boasting a shared kitchen, this property also provides guests with a barbecue.
This is a cute little clean place very close to the national parks. There is a lodge nearby with decent food and a great atmosphere. We did not miss anything we would expect from a fully fledged hotel except for the breakfast (which you can provide by yourself given the fridge included in the room). The room gets a bit warm in August but it also significantly cools down at night due to the higher elevation. Read the check-in instructions closely and before arriving at the location. Internet connection is spotty so it is likely that you won’t be able to access the check-in information after you have arrived. We would definitely return! 🙂

21 Fun After-School Activities & Things for Kids & Teens

School still might look a bit different this year, but one thing remains the same—the after-school routine is in constant need of a tune-up to ensure kids not only stay busy until dinner, but that they stay busy with activities that are both engaging and rewarding. 

Some families have it figured out, and use this time for children to either try something new or jump back into something that has long been forgotten. (Now is also a great time to brush up on time management with your kids.)

Either way, past success is not an indicator of future results! Whether you’ve had success in this area and are in need of a kickstart, or, have simply yet to master the after-school activity schedule, the following list could be a much-needed catalyst. 

From entertainment to education, you’d be surprised just how much that kids can enjoy and accomplish with a few hours each day. 

Engaging after-school activities for home

1.

Learn to code

As a kid, I loved video games and board games (more to come on both) and was a heavy baseball card collector. But, I can’t really think of much else at our disposal back then! Fast forward to today’s after-school activities, and we are talking things like leaning to code? 

Yes, it’s possible, and there are a number of different areas to explore when it comes to coding for kids or coding for teens. These opportunities include “playing with” coding “toys” like Sphero, engaging in online coding courses, giving after-school private tutoring a shot, and much more. 

2. Create a movie

My son is obsessed with Toy Story. (Because really, how can he and every other kid not be?) After watching him pour his heart and soul into creating a “Toy Story parade,” which was basically just a long line of Woody, Buzz, Bo Peep, and every other Disney/Pixar toy he owned, I thought he might enjoy giving them all a bit more life. 

So, with the help of the Stop Motion Studio app available in the Apple app store, we set up and captured a few frames! Using the app to easily piece them together and add music, we created the following.

And when kids are ready to take their skills to the next level, learning how to use pro software like Adobe Premiere will continue the cinematic adventure.

I removed them here, but you can also easily add images, title cards, end credits, and more!

Now, if nothing else, the activity will at least give you a new appreciation for full-length animated feature films…as our 30 minutes of posing toys and taking pictures resulted in the 15-second clip you see above.

3. Keep math skills sharp

Think of the brain as a muscle—we should always be working on our learning to keep them in shape! The Yup App is a great way for kids to get on-demand math tutoring and homework help whenever they need it, and they can do so directly from smartphones and tablets. 

The idea is simple: to use the app, a student snaps a photo of the problem they’re working on and connects with a vetted expert tutor. Then, Yup tutors work with students for however long they need to reach a solution, using secure messaging, photo-sharing, and a live virtual whiteboard.  

And that’s just one option! iD Tech has just launched a number of online math tutoring lessons, including options with pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, geometry, and more.

4. Game

I fall pretty firmly on the side that video games aren’t bad for kids, and are actually good, with a number of advantageous benefits, especially when kids create their own games. Plus, they do what they set out to do—entertain! 

So, there is no shame in having your child pick up the controller, and there is definitely no shame in you picking up the other controller and playing with them when time allows! As is the case with most things, it’s all about moderation.

Here are some of the best computer games for kids in terms of educational and entertainment value. 

For a social component, new online after-school programs that are held virtually allow for kids to gather with friends – or to make new friends – while engaging in Minecraft’s Sky Wars or battling it out with Minecraft Bed Wars.

5. Build with LEGO

I’ll admit, I wasn’t a LEGO kid. But now as an adult with my own kids, I’m totally bummed I wasn’t a LEGO kid!

It’s amazing the opportunity – and challenge – a LEGO set can provide—you’re telling me all of these tiny pieces can be fastened together to create The Wizarding World of Harry Potter? No way! 

Seeing these sets through to completion helps build perseverance and strengthens skills in areas like fine motor skills development and problem-solving. 

Not to mention the benefits of robotics for kids, which can be gained through LEGO sets like MINDSTORMS or other sets like VEX and a number of others. 

6. Clean and organize

If you’re like me, the thought of deep cleaning and organizing your home is one that often pops into your head, but is quickly squashed by the thought of having to “waste” a weekend day to take it on.

So, use this after-school time to tidy up, organize, and…

7. Gather and donate

While you’re at it, now’s the time to go the extra step and figure out where you can purge non-essentials. Clothes, toys, and everything else that might be spilling out of your closets.

Explain to your kids the idea behind donating items to those in need, and go through the exercise of deciding whether or not you really need all of that stuff that you haven’t touched in ages. 

8. Read a book

When is the last time you read with your kids? I bet many of you would say “last night, before bed” and that’s great!

But do you feel it was quality reading time? Habits are good, and that includes nighttime routines, but sometimes activities become more of a “going through the motions.” 

So, maybe you’re reading the same short story over and over again, or perhaps you only get a page in before your child falls asleep. Either way, use after-school time as an opportunity to get kids to crack a new book; maybe it’s a lengthier and more detailed title that really gets the imagination going. 

(And, if books really aren’t a consideration, how about engaging with a science website to engage your kids?)

9.

Build a fort

Speaking of imagination, sometimes it’s hard for kids to see past the fact that home is boring because they know its limitations…it’s a bunch of bedrooms and bathrooms, sweet.

So how about building up alternative worlds in the form of a pillow fort castle, or cardboard box amusement park? Add a nerf gun or two and you’ve got the makings of an epic battle.

10. Design

One of those benefits of playing video games is that it can get kids thinking about what they’re playing on a much deeper level. As in, how do you make a video game? How do you design and animate a video game character? What is a game designer?

If that’s the case, another after-school activity can involve letting your child loose with a design program like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or on more of an entry-level with Canva. Give them a task like design your birthday party invitation, or, create a flyer for a business, etc. (Learn more about our Photoshop tutoring lessons. )

11. Game…board-game

And let’s not forget about our offline gaming friends like Monopoly, Candy Land, and Chutes and Ladders! Board games are the ultimate low tech go-to, and have stood the test of time.

Online chess strategy, for instance, provides a lifetime of strategy and fun. For a new twist, try a gateway game like Catan Junior.

12. Watch a movie

And right behind the board game on the traditional indoor activity scale is the movie! Not much more to add here, and I’m sure you’re aware of all of the available movie streaming options—Netflix, Disney Plus, and the like.

13. Exercise

Don’t let the close quarters fool you—there is still plenty of exercising that can be done at home. And don’t let the word “exercise” fool you either!

While jumping jacks and push-ups are perfectly fine to engage in, I’m not sure you’ll get the desired buy-in from your kids. But chasing a balloon? Or stomping on bubble wrap? Not a bad workout, and fun to boot. 

14. Listen to a podcast

Podcasts are no longer reserved for parents seeking self-improvement, or for those on long car rides needing to pass the time. There are a number of podcasts for kids, ranging from learners like But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids to serials like The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian. Don’t worry, mom, we have you covered too with our best podcasts for moms. 

15. Dance

Depending on your child’s desired involvement, dancing at home can range from an impromptu boogie-down when their favorite song comes on, to a choreography lesson thanks to YouTube. And of course, dancing is another form of exercise, so two birds here. 

16. Create arts and crafts

If you’re stuck inside and weren’t given the opportunity to prepare, you can still find crafting options! 

Have kids stick toothpicks in marshmallows to construct an object. Or how about simple thumbprint art with the help of rubber stamp ink (here’s a cool thumbprint family tree)?

17. Show puppets

You’d be amazed at how many household items can be turned into puppets when needed for a puppet show.

Brown paper bags are a natural fit and can be easily drawn on and crafted in order to spruce up. And of course, tube socks are the home puppet show standard. 

18. Dress-up/act

For those interested in taking their performances to the next level, many kids get a kick out of raiding their parents’ closets, playing dress-up, and putting on their own improvised shows. 

19. Do a puzzle

One of the hardest things about keeping kids busy after school during the day is the fact that if you’re home with them, they want you to participate! This is great, don’t get me wrong, but all parents can attest, there is only so much puppet-showing one can take.

Not to mention a little thing called work!

Thus, a puzzle is always a welcome activity because it’s something creative, fun, and educational that kids can carry out on their own.  

20. Play hallway soccer

It doesn’t have to be soccer, but from experience, I’ve found it to be less destructive than other sports!

Be sure to take the pictures off the wall, and use a soft, non-regulation soccer ball while you’re at it.

Beyond that, don’t be surprised if your kids get wrapped up in an hour of dribbling and shooting through doorway goals.

21. Do a scavenger hunt

To really get the creative juices flowing, prepare a home-based scavenger hunt for your kids to embark upon. If you’re short on time, craft something based on how your house stands as-is, giving creative clues on your basic household items, like “I’m in the kitchen, and you’ll never eat me, but Scruffy the dog loves to greet me” for your stored dog snacks.

Or, if you have time to actually hide treats and trinkets, you can go that route as well.

It’s all about frame of mind

With after-school time, try and get kids to take advantage of the new opportunity that awaits! Encourage them to try something new if that has traditionally been a struggle; dive deeper into a school topic if a certain area is now proving to be a challenge.   

Whether it’s through one of the after-school activities above, or something entirely different, try to embrace the scenario presented and push yourself and your kids to come out better, stronger, or smarter on the other side!

9. Yarn Spelling

Time to test our kids’ creative skills with yarn spelling. Depending on their age and academic level you can choose how long the words should be. This yarn activity requires them to use cursive writing style since all the letters are connected, and visual and motor skills to create the word designs correctly.

10. Marshmallow Engineering

Every fun after school activity is better with sweet treats! This construction challenge requires two or more competitive teams of 3-4 kids. Each team is given 20 pieces of dry spaghetti, one marshmallow, and a yard of string and tape. They must create a structure stable and strong enough to hold their marshmallow in the quickest time to win!

11. Anime Club Activities

2. Teacher’s Day

This is one of the main holidays of the autumn and the year for the school. On this day, music played at our school, the corridors were decorated, congratulations sounded. Children went to school with gifts and flowers. At the end of the day, a festive concert is held at the school. But besides this, we had another interesting tradition – self-government day: high school students took the place of teachers and conducted lessons for other children. In elementary school, this annoyed us, because high school students like to be smart. But then we ourselves began to participate in this and conduct lessons for the beginners (it was already more pleasant).

3. New Year’s Light

New Year is a holiday celebrated in Russia always and everywhere: at home, at school, at the university, at work. At our school, we always held a Christmas tree for the beginning. The most interesting thing for us was to dress up in a beautiful suit or dress, and after the holiday to receive a gift. At the New Year’s light, of course, there was Santa Claus, whose role was played by the head of the theater group from year to year (of course, everyone knew about this). In the senior classes, discos are arranged for the New Year (the degree of fun depends on the ingenuity of the students).

4. Maslenitsa

Shrove Tuesday was celebrated in grand style at our school. At the end of the week, on Friday, they always held a fair on the street. Tables were taken out of the dining room, which each class had to set the table in their own way. It is impossible not to bring pancakes or other pastries! All this was sold. Of course, it was not possible to earn more or less decent money on such, but many still went out to trade. At the end of the holiday, an effigy was burned.

5. Review of the formation and song

We held such an event on 9May, but in some schools it was held on February 23rd. In our case, on Victory Day, in addition to the festive concert, where veterans were often invited, all classes had to take part in a drill competition. A few weeks before the event, we started marching in physical education classes, and we learned songs in music lessons. When everything was ready, on the street or in the gym, all classes demonstrated the ability to march in formation, while performing military compositions. As a rule, we wore caps and ties to the parade. But there were teachers who bothered a lot, so some marched in military uniform.

6. Fun starts and other sports activities

The most popular sports activities at our school were relay races, futsal and volleyball championships, and cross-country skiing. Sometimes it was a mixture of competitions such as tug of war or shuttle running. To participate in various fun starts, as a rule, they recruited the strongest children, but sometimes they also took those who were weaker. Avoiding such events was not easy. But after them, a spot on physical education appeared in the magazine.

7. School birthday

On this holiday, as usual, some kind of concert was organized, music played, balloons hung in the corridors. But when this was not enough, at our school they began to come up with some kind of flash mobs or quests. For example, once we were told to come to class in slippers. We also once wrote wishes to the school on paper airplanes, drew posters and postcards.

8. Waste paper collection

This activity required special preparation. During the year, papers, unnecessary notebooks, drafts were not thrown away, because they could definitely fit for waste paper. In elementary school, these collections were very important, because the classes competed with each other to collect the most kilograms of paper. I remember how we gave away our favorite magazines just to bring more waste paper. Carrying the cherished packages to school was a difficult test, parents came to help.

Traditional School Activities

Holiday 1 September.

A traditional event, the main meaning of which is the continuity of school values. The holiday is held by students of grades 10-11, but everyone who wants to demonstrate their abilities takes part in its preparation! The content of the holiday is: a traditional solemn line, a festive performance, unified thematic class hours, sports competitions, excursion museum game programs, participation in regional festive events. The holiday on September 1 sets students up for learning activities.

September 7th. Day of object training.

An unprepared person, finding himself in a stressful situation, begins to panic – because he does not know how to behave. In order not to get confused when a suspicious object or a fire is found, the school conducts exercises every month. The evacuation proceeds without panic: a trained rapid response group of senior students clearly and calmly exits the classrooms through emergency exits, sanitary posts in a state of readiness for first aid, teachers are attentive to details – this means that the school is under reliable protection!

October 5th. Teacher’s Day. Day of Self-Government.

The main purpose of holding the Understudy Day is to expand ideas about the profession of a teacher, creative self-realization of students. The festive mood for the team of teachers is provided by humorous lessons prepared by the Council of High School Students for the 12P (pedagogical) class specially formed that day and a concert program performed by talented students.

October 30th. Dedication ceremony.

It is held annually with the aim of adapting students to a new stage of education, the emergence of a sense of belonging, inclusion in the school community.

The initiation of young first-graders into a school fraternity has its own traditions: each class illustrates fragments of a poem, which as a result develops into a real school etiquette, sings a common song that has become a real anthem for first-graders, students are solemnly dressed with badges symbolizing their belonging to a school, classes go to an exciting travel – acquaintance with school classrooms, teachers and entertaining sciences.

The transition to the middle level of school students for fifth-graders is also associated with established traditions: each class prepares a “calling card” that helps the whole parallel reveal their talents, introduce classmates to their hobbies and achievements, the friendly performance of the Anthem of fifth-graders gives the participants an excellent mood, for class teachers comic tests have been prepared that reveal teachers for their wards from an unusual side, help to unite a new team.

Initiation into high school students of 10th grade students for graduates of 11th grade is a ritual of the continuity of school traditions, the guardians of which are now newly arrived high school students. Each class prepares a concert number that expresses the character of the team, its views, abilities and aspirations, 10th grade students are waiting for tests, as a result of which the class becomes even friendlier and discovers new talents among their classmates, class teachers of the senior classes also have to prove that they are not just professionals – subject teachers, but also modern teachers who keep up with the times and with their students.

The unifying element of the holiday is the performance of the Anthem of high school students. The holiday ends with a school-wide disco prepared by school DJs. Admission is free for all students of the school.

November 23-27. Week of Tolerance.

It has been running for over ten years. It is prepared by an initiative group of students in close cooperation with the socio-psychological service of the school. Within the framework of the week: a conference for high school students, thematic classes with a psychologist, poster and drawing competitions, writing an essay on a given topic. The level of preparation for the event is growing every year, students have the opportunity to work with legal literature, meet with experts, discuss modern problems of youth life in a diverse world. The opportunity to meet and dialogue with people who have already taken place as a person, who themselves are carriers of a high quality of culture and education, help high school students learn about the various ways of becoming a person. The problem and topics of the conference, as a rule, are determined by the participants themselves – high school students. According to the declared theme of the event, specialists are invited, communication with which contributes to the development of professional competencies of students.

November 27th. Mothers Day.

As part of this event, creative gifts are being prepared for mothers (souvenirs, crafts, a concert is held). Respect for the mother, the keeper of the hearth, strengthening ties with the family is the main leitmotif of this holiday.


From 23-30.11.2018 In our school (Kulikova St.) solemn events dedicated to Mother’s Day were held. The guys performed with songs and dances, prepared a film, drew their beloved mothers, prepared wall newspapers, and the works of mothers – needlewomen were placed at the exhibition.

Dec. Legal ring.

It has been held at the school since 2003 and represents a range of events: participation in the district game “Know and Respect the Laws”, the game “Brain Ring” on the basics of legal knowledge within the walls of the school, the design of corners for the protection of consumer rights, meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation .

Day of the Rescuer (including initiation into cadets).

For several years, cadet classes have been working at the school under the “Young Rescuer” program (5-9Class). The purpose of this area of ​​work is to teach children the rules of safety in all areas of their lives, to give knowledge in the field of the basics of life safety, the basics of medical knowledge, psychology, orienteering. The holiday of initiation into cadets is held very solemnly: employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, parents, teachers are visiting. This day of involvement of all adults and children ends with the performance of the Anthem of the Cadets and the presentation of special items of equipment: a beret, chevrons and a badge of a student of the cadet class.

New Year’s fairy tales.

There is nothing more long-awaited for the school staff than a performance prepared by students, their parents, teachers and graduates of past years! Since 1997, a real New Year’s show has been held on the stage of the Oktyabr ODC, to which students in grades 1-6 come with their families.

Performances are a means of broadcasting cultural and spiritual values, a way of self-expression and the disclosure of students’ creative abilities. Every year a new script is written, musical arrangement and scenery are selected, costumes are sewn. For many, becoming a participant in the action is the best New Year’s gift.

For students in grades 7-11, a New Year’s musical performed by high school students is staged, which, although it takes place within the walls of the school, is not inferior in brilliance either in costumes, or in scenery, or in the acting. To get a role in the play, the guys will have to go through a real acting casting! The performance ends with a New Year’s disco under a sparkling elegant Christmas tree.

Jan. Students’ Day. Trade Fair.

Not only the students themselves are interested in participating in the Fair, but also the professional educational institutions of the district, because they will open their doors and kindly meet future successful students. Therefore, SVE institutions conduct an advertising campaign using all means of influence: performances by teachers and college students, videos and master classes. And most importantly, the guys who want to acquire a profession as soon as possible have options to choose from!

Feb. Valentine’s Day.

Officially, Valentine’s Day has existed for more than 16 centuries, but the holidays of Love have been known since ancient pagan cultures. But this holiday also has a specific “culprit” – the Christian priest Valentine. His story is touching and sad, therefore, does not leave young hearts indifferent. The school has a special “Good wishes” mail, where everyone can send someone nice words or even a declaration of love on special postcards – “valentines” that the Council of High School Students delivers on Valentine’s Day.

Maslenitsa. Blind Fair.

Every year the Pancake Fair gathers a huge number of pancake lovers – with honey, sour cream, jam, minced meat and even caviar! Where, if not here, to manifest the talents of entrepreneurship? Surprisingly, even within the framework of fierce competition (and anyone who has been instructed by sellers can trade), young marketing geniuses manage not only to justify the costs, but also to earn!

Defenders of the Fatherland Day, lessons of courage.

As part of the month of defense – mass work, courage lessons are held at the school, because the patriotic education of students is one of the main directions in the work of the school. Veterans of the war, participants in local military conflicts come to the school – such meetings help not only to strengthen the connection between generations, but also to explain the simple truth – there is always and everywhere a place for a feat. And the military-sports game “Zarnitsa” helps the guys to prove themselves.

March. International Women’s Day 8 March.

As part of this event, creative gifts are being prepared for mothers (souvenirs, crafts, concert numbers). Respect for mother – the keeper of the hearth, strengthening ties with the family – the main leitmotif of this holiday.

April. A single day of the TRP.

The festival dedicated to the revival of the sports complex, popular in the USSR, began to be held in our school relatively recently, but we sincerely believe that for the new generation these starts will become a real ticket to life, and not only sports – after all, this is, first of all, a victory over oneself!

May. Victory Day.

Review of the combat song. The festival of staged military-patriotic songs is a form of holding events in honor of the great Victory, in which not only children, but also their parents try to take part, which is especially valuable for the formation of stable ties between generations. Literary and musical compositions focused on recreating the atmosphere of military events. Emotional inclusion and “living” in the process of preparing and performing, defending projects, making thematic newspapers, wartime dance compositions, elements of clothing and items from the heroic period of our great history – this is what becomes the theme of the most touching holiday at school, because every year everything fewer witnesses of those terrible years, our dear veterans.

Farewell to the 1st class.

It is carried out with the aim of summing up the results of education in the 1st grade, congratulations on the successful completion of the most difficult and responsible period in the child’s school life. In the process of holding a holiday, such personality traits as creative initiative, self-confidence, the ability to speak to an audience, quick wits develop.

Last call in 9th and 11th grades.

A holiday dedicated to the farewell of graduates with their childhood, with the school. The highlight of the event is that each scenario is focused on the unique features of the release, its abilities and has a theme that is duplicated in the design of the assembly hall and in the wall newspapers of the final grades. Graduates are greeted by a corridor of flowers performed by primary school students. At the end of the festive line – a solemn launch of balloons at the school stadium.

This holiday implies not only games and entertainment, but also an awareness of a new stage in his school life by an elementary school graduate, because here is farewell to the first teacher, to his class, farewell to the carefree times of his life. That is why the “last” parting word looks especially touching – a concert number that the guys are preparing with their teacher.

Children’s Day is a traditional event.

The event is being prepared and held jointly with the employees of the Department of Civil Defense and Emergency Situations of the district, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Fire Supervision Service and the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate and is designed for the entire school staff. It includes not only theoretical classes with children, meetings with employees of various services, but also practical classes, sports competitions, as well as demonstration performances by the fire brigade and the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

June. Graduation party in the 9th and 11th grades.

Held within the walls of the school for students 4 and 9-th grades, for graduates of the 11th – on the stage of the ODC “October” or the Palace of Culture named after. Y. Gagarin. The festive program is prepared by teachers, parents, graduates in a single community. A distinctive feature of the holiday is the general creative atmosphere and colorfulness of the event: from the opening of the curtain to the last minute of the evening. Municipal television annually shows a recording of the next graduation party of the school.

Thematic subject weeks.

Conducted annually according to a separate plan. Within the framework of thematic weeks: subject Olympiads, competitions, presentations of new programs, exhibitions of students’ creative works – which is an integral part of the educational process, an important means of creating a cultural and developing environment.

Exhibition materials are used by subject teachers, class teachers in the classroom and in extracurricular life. With well-organized preparation and purposeful inclusion of students, the event is of great importance.

From surfing to sand castles and bug hunts to beach hikes, Aloha Beach Camp offers three age-appropriate summer beach camp programs and more than 200 safe and fun aquatic day camp activities under the Aloha name.

No prior beach or ocean experience is necessary at any of our programs. Our our counselors will be right beside you every step of the way showing you how to do every activity from the ground up at your most comfortable pace.

Keiki Camp for Boys and Girls Preschool to Age 7

 The first beach day camp just for younger kids, Aloha Beach Camp’s Keiki Camp is designed to meet the unique needs of younger children, many of whom are experiencing the beach and ocean environment for the first time. The goal of this program is to help younger campers feel safe and comfortable in the ocean. At Keiki Camp, boys and girls ages ages 4, 5, 6 and 7 enjoy surfing lessons, boogie boarding instruction, group sand games and many more aquatic and Hawaii-themed beach activities.

​Keiki Camp takes place at Zuma Beach and Paradise Cove in Malibu on a rotating basis. Free transportation  is provided at a meeting point near your home or office so you don’t need to drive your child to camp yourself. View the

Kahuna Camp for Kids and “Tweens” Ages 8 to 11

Kahuna Camp is for kids and “tweens” who are too old for Keiki Camp, but not quite ready for our High Action program (see below). Kahuna Camp takes place at Zuma Beach, Paradise Cove, Castaic Lake and other beach sites on a rotating basis. As with all our programs, you can pick and choose any days of camp you want. Whatever schedule that works for your family is the schedule that works best for us.

Surfing, jet skiing, boogie boarding and wakeboarding are just some of the Kahuna Camp activities offered. Daily transportation is available from your area.  

Even if you’ve never done these kinds of activities before, don’t worry! 🙂 Many, if not most, of the other kids at camp are new to this stuff, too. We’ll teach you how to do it every step of the way! 🙂


More About Kahuna Camp

High Action Camp for Kids and Teenagers Ages 12 to 15

Designed exclusively for older kids ages 12 to 15, High Action Camp takes place at a different beach, lake or water park each day. Camp locations include Zuma Beach, Castaic Lake and other aquatic venues. The High Action activities are the same you’ll find at Kahuna Camp, but presented at a somewhat faster pace making this program the thrill of a lifetime for older campers!

​Most of the kids who attend our High Action Camp tell us they’ve grown tired of other local summer camps where the kids are too young and the activities are too boring, so they switched to Aloha Beach Camp for a more exciting camp experience and to meet and hang out with lots of other kids their age.

As with all our programs, we understand campers may have limited experience participating in the kinds of aquatic activities we offer. That’s absolutely fine, and part of the fun! You don’t need ANY experience whatsoever to enjoy everything Aloha has to offer. Our counselors will show you how to do all the activities at whatever pace that’s comfortable for you.

What Does a Typical Day at Camp Look Like?

Curious how a typical camp day works?  How about the whole summer?  Aloha Beach Camp combines a structured, well-supervised environment with the freedom for campers to pick, choose, and participate in the activities that appeal to them the most and for parents to send their kids to camp according to any day or combination of days that fit your family’s busy schedule. With no long-term enrollment commitments nor advance sessions to conform to, you can choose your own starting date, ending date, and any days you want in between.

Aloha Beach Camp’s Keiki Camp program takes place at Paradise Cove on Mondays, Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Fridays and Zuma Beach on Wednesdays when the Keiki kids go surfing.

Learning to surf and boogie board at Zuma Beach are Aloha Beach Camp staples! You’ll be standing up on your surfboard and riding the waves all the way to the shore in no time. You will probably even stand up on your surfboard the very first time you try! 🙂

High Action and Kahuna campers visit Castaic Lake every Wednesay for boating, tubing, jet skiing, wakeboarding and related water activities all summer.

When any special activity activities or especial events are planned, we’ll always inform you beforehand in case you want to add them to your schedule if you’re not already registered those particular days.

Free Transportation

Kids from all over Los Angeles and the local valleys (and even further) attend Aloha Beach Camp each year. Our free transportation service makes getting to camp easy, safe, and fun. When you sign up for camp, you’re automatically entered into our transportation system for free pick-up and drop-off all summer. You can even choose the meeting point you that’s most convenient for you. Camp counselors ride the bus with the kids and keep them supervised, entertained, playing games and singing songs. Leave the driving to us!

Or how about hosting your own Aloha Beach Camp open house for your families and friends. We’ll come to you to share and discuss the Aloha Beach Camp experience with your families and friends and answer all your questions. We’ll also hook you up with some cool Aloha Beach Camp gear for your time as the host!

Pupils of the summer camp every week attended children’s screenings at the Kurortny cinema: “Koschey. Bride Kidnapper”, “Chipollino”, “Three Cats and the Sea of ​​Adventures”

Students learned about the Olympiad movement of schoolchildren, about the All-Russian Big Olympiad “Art – Technology – Sport”. The guys were introduced to the leading platform for the development and support of young talents, the Educational Center “Sirius”, they were told how to apply for a competitive selection.

In accordance with the requirements of the department of Rospotrebnadzor, all sanitary and hygienic requirements for organizing a summer health camp with daytime stay for children were observed. The children were in a health camp from 8.45 to 18.00 with 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea). The menu was varied (dairy, meat, fish dishes), and included fortified foods (fresh fruits, juices).

Outdoor games and walks were organized during the day. Sports events were organized at the school stadium: relay races “Funny Starts”, football games, rounders, “Bouncers” During the rest, the guys in the camp made new friends and hobbies.

1969

In 1969, the first KinderCare opened its doors in Montgomery, Alabama, to support record numbers of mothers entering the workforce.

1972

Expansion of the centers continued apace, as the company went public in 1972.

1975

Growth prompted the company to divide its operations into six geographical regions, managed by regional directors, in 1975.

1977

The company’s first major acquisition came in 1977, when it purchased the 15 facilities of Playcare.

1985

The company was also continuing its tradition of fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, for which it become a national corporate sponsor in 1985.

1987

The company found itself in deep financial trouble after the stock market crash in October 1987.

Late in 1987, Kinder-Care acquired Sylvan Learning Centers, a provider of supplemental instruction to children and adults, and the largest franchiser of its kind.

1988

The company continued operating, although, according to a 1988 Forbes article, less than half of Kinder-Care’s sales and profits for the year were expected to come from its child care centers.

1989

Next, Mendel and Grassgreen accepted a 1989 offer from the Lodestar Group, a New York investment banking firm, for a rights offering, in which shareholders would generate new equity capital through their purchase of Kinder-Care stock from Enstar at a discount price.

1991

During this period, Tull Gearreald, an investment banker, took command of the company as president and CEO. Caught in a cash squeeze in January 1991, Kinder-Care stopped paying interest on its debt.

1992

Still faltering under its high debt load, KinderCare filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on November 10, 1992.

1994

By 1994, KinderCare was preparing to open its first center in the United Kingdom and expected to open five to seven more centers within the next two years.

1996

He founded Knowledge Universe, Inc., a consumer and business education company, in 1996.

2005

KinderCare was acquired in 2005 by the Knowledge Learning Corporation (KLC) division of Michael Milken’s privately held education services firm, Knowledge Universe.

2015

In July 2015, Partners Group, a Swiss enterprise, bought Knowledge Universe.

2016

Knowledge Universe renamed itself as KinderCare Education in January 2016.

glowing dots are on it. Some thought that gods lived in the sky,
others believed that creatures unknown to man live in the sky, and even before
present time, a person has not developed a complete understanding of what
space really. Therefore, it is important to competently organize work on the formation of
children’s ideas about space. From birth, the child is
pioneer, explorer of the world that surrounds him. In the early
age they are interested in the mysteries of the universe. Older preschoolers are always attracted
the theme of space, since everything unknown, incomprehensible, inaccessible to the eye excites
childish fantasy. What methods can be used to interest the child, how
help him learn a lot of new and interesting things about space? I believe the method
project will allow children to learn complex material through a joint search for solutions

the formation of children’s ideas about the world around them. In the planetary room
children get acquainted with the history of the science of astronomy, the planets of the solar
systems, learn about human space exploration, learn more about our planet

space.

This project will help children learn how to mine
information from various sources, to systematize the acquired knowledge,
apply them in various types of children’s activities. Also at this stage
the following work will be carried out: studying the literature, updating the content

allowances, identifying topics for consultations and activities for parents,

Starting, Operating, and Sustaining an Afterschool Program

Starting an afterschool program can be a difficult task, particularly in areas where funding and support are scarce. It needs a combination of research and planning; developing program vision mission, design, and continuous improvement systems; workforce development; licensing; policies; and protocols; and risk management. It also highlights the importance of the role that community intermediaries play in supporting cross-sector partnerships among various stakeholders through a systems approach.

A few considerations to build high-quality afterschool programs include:

Research and Planning: Initiating a task force that represents various local stakeholder groups and individuals committed to the cause of starting an afterschool program can support the initial research and planning process. This includes conducting a needs assessment through surveys, interviews, and focus groups to determine types of afterschool programs needed in the community, leveraging existing resources, and identifying systems and supports that need to be established.

Funding and Budgeting: Most programs will likely need some start-up funding to get off the ground. Communities need to learn about federal, state, or local funds as well as look for private and in-kind donations to support afterschool programs. Programs will also need to budget for both start-up and daily operating costs keeping in mind the ability to pay for these programs.

State Regulations: States have minimum licensing requirements that apply to programs serving children, including afterschool programs. These requirements typically vary for types of providers, and often include separate requirements for school-age care settings. Programs should contact their state’s licensing agency to find out about the requirements. Private and public funding may also have separate requirements.

Partnerships: Developing a collaborative cross-sector partnership that includes schools, juvenile systems, social service and other such allied youth fields1 is important to leverage the multiple settings where learning happens. School-OST partnership is even more essential to recruit students, improve staff engagement, enable alignment of a shared vision of learning, and maximize resource usage like facilities, staff, data, curriculum, etc.2

Vision and Mission: Programs need to develop a collaborative vision and mission that is inclusive of families, youth, schools, community partners, etc., for what success looks and feels like for young people. It is also essential to consider that the learning setting is developmentally appropriate, safe and supportive, built on positive relationships, and meets the needs and interests of young people.3

Organizational Structures, Policies and Protocols: Programs should also consider if they want to organize as a government, non-profit, for-profit, school-based organization, or partner with existing national or local organizations. It is essential to develop policies and protocols for enrollment, staffing, transportation, family engagement, behavior management, food, health and safety, and reporting of child abuse.

High-Quality Programming and Continuous Quality Improvement Systems: There is a growing body of information on curricula and activities for afterschool programs and providers. However, it is important that programs implement evidence-based practices, or core components in order to evaluate whether they have attained their intended outcomes. Building a quality continuous improvement system that is nested in a low-stakes accountability approach that provides supports to staff to build their capacity.4 Some researchers also reason that developmental relationships between young people and adults may be more important than any particular curriculum or program element in successful afterschool programs.5

For more information about starting a program, contact your state Lead Agency for Child Care. Other national and local foundations and intermediaries have also provided roadmaps for building afterschool systems by bringing together community resources to improve youth outcomes. 6

Supporting Student Success Through Afterschool Programs

Introduction

Children spend approximately 25 percent of their waking hours in school, and policy leaders are often striving to provide more learning opportunities through afterschool programs.   

Broadly defined, afterschool programs (sometimes called OST or Out-of-School Time Programs) are school or community-based programs that offer academic and enrichment activities in the hours that follow the school day. These programs serve children of all ages and include academic support, workforce development opportunities, mentoring relationships, and more. As shown below, these programs are funded and supported legislatively in a variety of ways.  

What the Research Says

Research shows that high-quality afterschool programs improve students’ educational outcomes, school attendance, and social and emotional learning. Afterschool Alliance claims that quality afterschool programs understand that children and youth in different age groups vary in academic, psychological, and physical activity needs. Consistent participation in afterschool programs has shown lower dropout rates and has helped close achievement gaps for low-income students. For older youth, regular participation in an afterschool program may also reduce risky behaviors and help them gain college and career-needed skills. 

Afterschool programming has been shown to improve social and academic outcomes for students, however, research points to certain key elements for success. To fully realize all the positives of afterschool programming, students must receive a regular dosage, adequately trained staff, and high-quality programming. Since 2004, Afterschool Alliance has provided the most comprehensive national and state-specific account of how children and youth spend their afterschool hours. In their 2020 America After 3PM report, one of the biggest takeaways is the continued demand for afterschool programs. According to their research, for every child enrolled, three are waiting to get into a program. That equates to roughly 25 million children who are unable to access afterschool programs. The barriers cited are program cost, availability, and transportation or accessibility.  

Funding for Afterschool

The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program, the only dedicated federal funding stream, is available specifically for local afterschool, before-school, and summer learning programs. Through state education-awarded grants, this program currently serves nearly 2 million youths. Research shows that several barriers to access afterschool programming exist, and funding continues to be one of those. Cost and access continue to be barriers to participation in afterschool programs, with about 3 in 5 parents citing this the reason they did not enroll their child in a program. As federal funding has not kept up with inflation, the 21st CCLC funding level is now $10 million lower in inflation-adjusted terms since 2014. Thus, leaving the burden of funding such programs falls on states, communities, and families.  Support for engaging and enriching afterschool programs reached its highest level in America After 3PM history in 2020 in, with 87 percent bipartisan parent support of public funding for programs that provide afterschool opportunities to students in communities that have few opportunities for children and youth. However, allocating additional funding for afterschool can be difficult with tight state budgets.  

Currently, twelve states allocate funds dedicated to afterschool programs. An additional eleven states fund initiatives that include afterschool programs as an allowable use. Other states tap into other funds to support afterschool. For example, grant programs in Tennessee and Nebraska receive a portion of their state lottery profits. Missouri is currently considering similar legislation for their unclaimed lottery prizes. Others receive funds from state departments of education or social services. 

The pandemic has brought funding barriers to the forefront. According to the Hunt Institute’s tracker at least 17 states have allocated COVID relief funds to afterschool and summer programs so far. However, a recent survey has cited that 61 percent of afterschool programs have reported high levels of concern around permanent closure.  

Afterschool Policy

States’ efforts to support afterschool include focusing policy and funding on certain populations (e.g. at-risk or older youth) or issue areas (e.g. STEM). Other states have taken steps to collect information the afterschool landscape within their state to inform future policy and funding opportunities. 

Session 2021 Legislative Summary

During the 2021 legislative year, policymakers continued to focus on addressing disrupted learning due to COVID-19. One approach lawmakers have used to reimagine accelerated learning is leveraging quality afterschool programs to reengage students. 

States have looked at supporting afterschool programs by appropriating funds. For example, California Assembly Bill 86 allocated $4.6 billion for Expanded Learning Opportunities Grants. There is no application required to receive these grants; however, to be eligible for the full funding, districts must implement a learning recovery program that provides supplemental instruction, support for social and emotional well-being, and meals to specific student groups.  

Another trend around afterschool programming revolved around investing in literacy-based afterschool programs. In Louisiana, with the passing of Senate Bill 222 in 2021, that looks like focusing on comprehensive early literacy initiatives. The bill focuses on students in kindergarten through third grade who demonstrate literacy gaps. The bill focuses on students in kindergarten through third grade who demonstrate literacy gaps. These students are provided research-based literacy interventions and supports, which may include before- and after-school literacy programs, by a teacher or tutor with specialized literacy training.  

Over the years, states have enacted legislation to support the creation of expanded learning opportunities councils and task forces over the past years. These members (typically, compromised of state agency representatives, community stakeholders, and state legislators) are often assigned to collect information on the state’s extended learning opportunities landscape. Oklahoma did this in 2021 by enacting House Bill 1882 and creating the Out of Schooltime Task Force. The 19-member task force will review existing maps of afterschool programs and highlight gaps in access, identify and evaluate practices to improve and increase the number of quality, affordable out-of-school programs in the state, and review tools to evaluate successful outcomes of programs. 

One of the newer trends in 2021 was legislation that acknowledges that engaging learning experiences can take place outside of the classroom and students may receive credits for such experiences. By enacting House Bill 172 in Idaho, it adds to existing law to provide that students may receive credit for extended learning opportunities or by demonstrating prior knowledge of a content area. Similarly, Alabama enacted House Bill 486 that provides a means for allowing students to request and receive credit for participation in extended learning opportunities.   

Although COVID-19 continues to leave some unknowns, legislation around afterschool programs continues to be a focus for state policymakers moving forward.

STEM

Students that attend high-quality afterschool programs with STEM programming have shown increased STEM knowledge and skills and a higher likelihood of graduating and pursuing a STEM career. They have also shown to be effective in engaging student populations that are underrepresented in the STEM field, particularly girls and minority students. Additionally, afterschool STEM programs allow for partnerships among schools and the community including colleges and universities, museums, science centers, federal science agencies and businesses.

Currently i am a senior at the riverside county education academy campus in indio. I have been at this school since i was a freshman and fell in love with it. The teachers are all very committed to making sure you get the help you need to succeed. Since the first day i attended school at RCEA my whole life has changes. I have become a more disciplined, mature, successful individual and i thank all the staff at RCEA for that. I overall recommend this school to any student who would prefer a school with smaller class sized in which you get help when you need it and a school where you can build your character and become a leader.

Having being in a military school has taught me a lot not only about the military but about myself. I transferred into this high school ending sophomore year and I didn’t know anyone there. When I arrived I was automatically approached by three girls who introduced themselves and later on endedbuo become good friends of mine. This school isn’t an ordinary high school as some would say. Here at RCEA you learn to become a leader and learn what it is like to be a cadet part of the California Cadet Corps. You learn all about team work and integrity and qualities and you will need in the future that is to come.

What I like about Riverside County Education Academy is they really focus on their students . I say this because they spend one on one time with you when you don’t understand a certain subject .

Riverside Military Academy

The Riverside Military Academy (RMA) produces highly educated, motivated, and physically fit young people who are dedicated to the values ​​necessary to be a good citizen and who, upon graduation, are prepared to excel in their chosen college and beyond. After we meet with Mrs. Noble, we instantly knew that Big Hugs was perfect. We were treated like family, not just a number! Free early education for 2 year olds

If you’ve been unable to find a childcare place, the Family Information Service may be able to help. 

Will there be any additional costs?

Your 15 hours of early education is completely free.

  • No charge for enrolling your child
  • No fees

A refundable deposit may be charged to secure your place.

However if you want your child to attend more than 15 hours per week you can pay for extra hours at some providers.

How long does a funded two year old place last?

Until your child reaches the term after their third birthday when they become eligible for universal free nursery education for 3 and 4 year olds. 

Does my child need to take all the hours to start with?

No, you can begin by taking a few hours each week and build up the amount of hours, to no more than 15 a week, if the childcare provider is able to accommodate. However, you will need to stick to the same number of hours each week over one term.

Can my child have a place all year round?

This depends on the provider. Some may offer you the option to ‘stretch’ your child’s free hours over more than 38 weeks i.e. fewer hours over more weeks. Talk to your provider about this.

What if my finances change?

Once eligibility has been confirmed, your child will remain eligible for the funding until the term after they turn three.

Do I need to print the Two Year Old Funding voucher?

No, the childcare provider simply needs to know your reference number. 

I believe that I am eligible for the funding but the system says that I have been unsuccessful. What can I do?

If you have recently begun claiming an eligible benefit, it sometimes takes a little while for the system to update. You can submit an application again but do not re-apply once you have received a code.

What happens if my child does not attend the childcare provider?

You should let the provider know of non-attendance. If attendance is irregular without any valid reason, you will be supported in the first instance but if the place is not being reasonably fully used then it may be offered to someone else.

Can my child attend a childcare provider outside Oxfordshire?

Yes. However as we can only fund providers in Oxfordshire you would need to apply to the relevant council.

Can I split the funding between two settings?

You may split it if providers agree although it is generally better for a child if they attend just one setting.  Schools and academies nurseries would expect a child to attend for the full 15 hours.

What is a Zambrano carer?

In this context, a Zambrano Carer is the primary carer of a British citizen child or dependent adult where requiring the primary carer to leave the UK would force that British citizen to leave the European Economic Area (EEA).

Although Zambrano Carers have no recourse to public funds, they are allowed to work in order to facilitate the primary care of the child or dependent.

Apply for free education and childcare for 2-year-olds

The Government wants every child to get the best start in life and believe that maximising a child’s development at an early age is essential in improving educational standards in later life. In Halton all eligible two year olds will have access to their fifteen hours a week of Two Year Old Free Entitlement through a range of high quality early years providers, which include pre-schools, day nurseries and some eligible childminders.

All providers who offer the entitlement work towards the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which was introduced in September 2008 to ensure schools and early years providers follow a structure of care, learning and development for children from birth to five years old.

The EYFS sets the standard of care, learning and development that young children should experience when they are attending a setting outside their family home.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the Two Year old Free Entitlement:

What is Two Year Old Free Entitlement?

Eligible two year olds are entitled to a free part time early learning and care place.

Who is eligible for two year old free entitlement?

A two year old is eligible if they are:

  • ‘Looked After’ (LAC) by their Local Authority: ‘Children who are provided with accommodation by a Local Authority for more than 24 hours on a voluntary basis or who are under a Care Order. The child may be living with foster carers, in a residential home or with parents or other relatives. A child who is ‘looked after’ is defined in Section 22 of the Children Act 1989’.
    • A child who has left care through special guardianship or through adoption.
    • A child who receives Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

A two year old child whose family receives one of the following are also eligible:

  • Income support
  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit – £15,400 household income (does not included any benefit received)
  • Support through Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act
  • The Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit
  • The Working Tax Credit 4-week run (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for WorkingTax Credit)
  • A child who is on receipt of a qualifying benefit in their own right
  • An annual income not exceeding £16,190.


If you’re a non-EEA citizen who cannot claim benefits

Your 2-year-old may get free childcare if you are getting
support under the Immigration and Asylum Act and have either:


  • claimed asylum in the UK and are waiting for a decision (known as ‘part 6’)
  • been refused asylum in the UK (known as ‘section 4’)

A 2-year-old you care for may also get free childcare if your household income is £15,400 a year or less after tax, and you have either:

  • leave to remain with ‘no recourse to public funds’ on
    family or private life grounds
  • the right to live in the UK because you’re the main carer of a British citizen (known as a
    ‘Zambrano Carer’)​​

When can my child access the two year old free entitlement?

The term starting after your child’s second birthday. Term dates are:

  • 1st January – 31st March (Spring term)
  • 1st April – 31st August (Summer term)
  • 1st September – 31st December (Autumn term)

So for example if your child’s date of birth was July 2018 your child can start to access their two year old free entitlement from September 2020.

What is a free place?

The funding entitles eligible two year olds to a maximum of 15 hours per week, over no less than 38 weeks a year (570 hours in total).

Which early years providers offer the two year old free entitlement?

In Halton all day nurseries and preschools and eligible childminders are registered to receive the two year old funding. The Department for Education require funded 2 year olds to attend high quality settings, therefore only those with Good or above Ofsted grading can participate. However, settings with a requires improvement grading can be used at the discretion of the Local Authority, where additional spaces are required to fund eligible children. One Halton Steering Group​​ agreed that Childminders must have a Good in their most recent Ofsted Inspection to be funded.

Can I use the 15 hours over 2 days?

Yes. The minimum you can use is 2.5 hours per day and the maximum is 10 hours in any one day. It is not to be used before 7am or after 7pm.

What should I do to receive a free place?

A two year old referral form needs to be completed and sent to the Early Years officer – ​2 year funded programme. You must include your National Insurance Number, your date of birth and your legal surname on the referral form to ensure eligibility can be checked. Once eligibility has been checked the parent will be contacted to discuss setting preference.

Can my child go to more than one childcare provider?

Yes, although you can only split the entitlement between a maximum of two providers (unless there are exceptional circumstances).

How can I be sure that the childcare provider is offering good quality early education?

All registered providers are inspected by Ofsted (however all parents should satisfy themselves as to quality, nature and details of the childcare provision). You can view individual Ofsted reports by visiting the Ofsted website at: www.ofsted.gov.uk

All registered providers follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

All providers have appropriately qualified staff (at least 50% of the s taff must be qualified). All staff have had a Disclosure and Barring Service check carried out on them (previously known as Criminal Records Bureau check). All staff have access to regular high quality training.

The program will include four modules of 36 academic hours. Schoolchildren will be able to take them both online and offline – on the basis of regional educational platforms.

In addition, adult citizens will also be able to master the IT sector with the support of the state. Those who wish will have access to additional professional education programs in the field of IT. The courses are held as part of the Digital Economy national project. Training takes place remotely and is implemented by 2035 University and Innopolis University.

Additional professional education courses in the field of artificial intelligence can be completed for 10% of their market value. References

A reference is someone who can answer questions about your work history, skills, abilities, and work style. Choose your references with care. What they say can make a big difference. Remember to send them a thank you note when you know they have given you a recommendation.

What types of references are important?

There are four types of references. References from past employers carry the most weight.


  • Employment references include past employers, co-workers, subordinates, or clients. They can speak about your specific employment experience. You can also list people for whom you perform volunteer activities, babysitting, lawn mowing, and other odd jobs.

  • Professional references are people who know you on a professional basis. They may include contacts from business and sales, clubs, or professional or community organizations.

  • Academic references are instructors and vocational counselors. They can speak about your academic activities. These are most appropriate for current students or recent graduates.

  • Personal references are people who know you personally and can describe your skills. Only use this type of reference if you do not have the other types. Use the names of people who can tell an employer you can be depended on to do a good job.

How do you choose people?

  • Select people who honestly know you and will speak objectively.
  • Avoid using family members or close friends as references.
  • Avoid references that may be controversial or may concern the employer. This includes clergy, counselors, or social workers, less they are relevant to the job.
  • Someone who is influential in the community or business may be an effective reference, if they can speak about you related to employment.

How can you prepare a reference for the employer’s contact?

  • Find out how the reference would prefer to be contacted.
  • Get permission to give out his or her contact information: name and phone number or e-mail address.

An employer may also ask for your reference’s occupation, how long you’ve known each other, and the nature of your relationship.

References are people who can talk about your work experience, work habits, character and skills. You should choose your references carefully.

As part of the job search process, you may be asked to provide the names of people whom a potential employer can contact to find out more about you. It is a good idea to choose people who can speak or write favourably about you and your work. This will improve your chances of getting the job.

Providing appropriate local references can be a challenge for newcomers. If you don’t have work experience in Canada, you may have difficulty providing this type of reference. Similarly, if your recent work is unrelated to the type of job you are looking for, your references may not be able to speak to the skills needed for the position.

Who would be a good reference?

Work References

Many employers prefer work references. If your work references are all from another country, you might include at least one on your list as long as they are comfortable to speak in English, are accessible through email or Skype, and have some understanding of the position you are applying for.

If possible, you should choose someone who has supervised you professionally or who has worked closely with you. A manager, supervisor or even a co-worker from a casual job may be able to speak to your work habits or transferable skills (the skills that you can take from one job to another). They can say, for example, that you are reliable, friendly, organized, and a good problem solver. Other references could include someone who is aware of your work habits or skills through your volunteer or community work.

Academic References

Academic references are also acceptable and may even be preferable, depending on the situation. If you have been to school recently in Canada, consider asking your teacher to be a reference for you, particularly if you think they can speak positively about your skills and character.

Character References

Character references can substitute for work references if there are no other alternatives. They can be friends, a landlord, clients or anyone who can speak to your good personal qualities such as your honesty, dependability, good nature, etc. If they have firsthand knowledge of your work skills, that is even more useful. Close relatives are not generally acceptable references and neither are people who do not know you well.

You may not want to include references from areas of your life you prefer to keep private or that may conflict with your interviewer’s values. For example, personal counsellors, therapists, religious leaders or leaders of political or military parties in your home country may not always be appropriate references.

How can I develop new references?

If you still do not have enough references, you may want to consider taking a course in your field of interest. If you participate in class and make a good impression, the teacher or other program staff may be willing to act as a reference for you. Volunteering is also a good way to develop references. However, some organizations do not provide references for volunteers, so it is a good idea to check what the policy is.

Once you have good references, you should try to keep in touch with them frequently. Let them know how your job search is going and thank them for their efforts.

Preparing your references

You should ask someone if they will be a reference for you before you give their name to a potential employer. If they agree, let them know what job you are applying for, how you are qualified, and give them a copy of your résumé. For academic references, it can be useful to remind teachers about your projects or grades.

When should I provide a reference?

Most people write on their résumé “References Available Upon Request” and don’t include names. If you have been asked to bring references to an interview, take them on a separate sheet of paper and indicate if they are work, character, or academic references. If references are required after the interview, let them know that you will email this list to them. Emailing allows you time to choose your references based on the information you now have about the position.

Description in its simplest form

Deep links collect and transmit data about:

  • views, clicks and installs;
  • channels that bring in the most downloads and revenue;
  • users who follow the links the most.

What else they can do and why they are needed:

  • the simplest thing is to use them to direct the user from notifications directly to the desired application screen. Case ILLE DE BEAUTE

We implemented deep links in one of our favorite projects — the ILLE DE BEAUTE mobile app.

Before deep linking, the app had a self-implemented Actions system. These mobile application modules could deliver the user to any part of the application when the client received a notification – it was for working with notifications that we originally implemented this system. Clicks from advertising banners delivered the client to the main page of the application. nine0003

We have seen that the statistics of visits is growing, as well as the volume of sales through the application. The store constantly had promotions and seasonal offers, and the customer wanted a banner on each page of the site that would send the customer to a screen with a product description in the application.

What goals did we have and what did we want together with the customer:

  • links to products from the desktop and mobile site of ILE DE BEAUTE, which lead directly to the product in the application;
  • links to promotions and collections; nine0228
  • attract new users with mobile devices immediately to the application;
  • bring the user to the desired screen by installing the application;
    see the effectiveness of various marketing channels and banner networks.

Ways of implementation

Our shortlist of ready-made services consisted of:

  • Branch — one of the most advanced services for working with deep links. We studied it as a leader in its segment;
  • Firebase is a super-system from Google, in which, in addition to a huge list of features, there is also work with deep links and search indexing; nine0228
  • AppsFlyer is a system that was used to work with marketing campaigns and collect statistics in the application long before the idea of ​​introducing deep links.

In addition, there are other solutions, such as Adjust, Yozio, Deeplink, or open source solutions, but we did not touch on them in this article.

Also, we do not consider self-implementation – we will leave this to the discretion of your development team. There are enough examples on the web with all the details. The story will be approximately the same: in order to get the most important functions (redirection through the App Store / Google Play, implementation of links to two platforms, analytics), additional services will have to be created from scratch. nine0003

Service Comparison

Branch is probably the most feature rich deep linking service that can do just about everything.

Liked:

  • wealth of features;
  • quality and convenience;
  • many examples, detailed use cases, a blog with useful articles.

In a word, the guys take their business very seriously and rightly consider themselves leaders in this market.

What I didn’t like:

  • price. There are free plans, but they are for startups or not heavily loaded applications; nine0228
  • narrow specialization. Since deep links are a feature of Branch (unlike Firebase or AppsFlyer), it can only do this, but it can do it well.

Bottom line: Branch is a great service if you want a lot from deep links and are willing to invest heavily in them, or if your application load is very low and you can use the free plan.

You probably know about Firebase. And if you don’t know, then be sure to look in his direction. This is a Google service for mobile app developers that has everything: hosting and databases, cloud services, testing and crash reports, AdWords setup, deep links, indexing and much, much more. nine0298

What we liked:

  • everything is in one place — you can view analytics, set up deep links and, if necessary, use other services;
  • complete documentation and instructions;
  • user-friendly interface;
  • Deep links, App indexing and analytics are included in Firebase for free and by default.

I didn’t like the fact that Firebase lacks some of the features that Branch and AppsFlyer provide (content preview, working with ad networks). nine0003

Summary: Firebase has proven to be the most versatile and complete service for deep linking, especially if you use other Firebase services.

This is a service that is primarily aimed at marketing campaigns and attracting users to the application. It was used to set up in-app ad campaigns, so we saw it as a logical platform for deep linking. AppsFlyer offers its own deep linking solution called OneLink. nine0003

We liked everything about AppsFlyer related to marketing campaigns in one way or another.

What I didn’t like:

interface and ease of use – it is clearly not up to par;
instability – sometimes it crashes, sometimes deep links just stop working, and you have to reinstall the application to restore.

Bottom line: AppsFlyer is good for linking deep linking to ads and marketing campaigns, but if you have a choice, it’s better to look towards other solutions. nine0003

Selection and configuration

As a result of comparing Branch, Firebase and AppsFlyer services, our choice initially settled on Firebase. We wanted to combine everything in one service:

  • deep link service;
  • notification settings service;
  • collection of metrics and analysis of statistics;
  • indexing setting;
  • possibilities for integrations.

This solution would be free, easy to use and stable. This was our hypothesis at the beginning of implementation. We began to check step by step how best to achieve the business goals that we had before the start. nine0003

The client representative is used to setting up advertising campaigns in banner networks using the AppsFlyer service, so we decided not to touch this part, that is, everything related to lead generation and marketing campaigns. AppsFlyer knows how to do this, stores all the statistics and allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. Only now we have configured AppsFlyer to use several types of deep links, both native and firebase-generated links.

To get the most out of notification settings, we used Yandex’s AppMetrica, which was already set up to collect analytics. It has a module that allows you to manage push-notifications campaigns and embed deep links into notifications. Notification-related deep linking functionality has been transferred to AppMetrica, and all statistics are stored there.

Why did we end up using Firebase? To form deep links that guide the user through the installation of the application and to collect statistics of such transitions. The Firebase admin is the most convenient of all and the links it generates are the shortest and most readable.

At the same time, with the help of the server team, we left the possibility for deep links to work without third-party services. The IL DE BEAUTE site link contains identifiers that can be parsed by the action mechanism in the application and used to navigate to the desired screen. The only negative is that if the user does not have an application, he will simply go to the mobile version of the site. nine0003

As a result, the business goals were achieved, albeit in several ways at the same time.
