ABOUT | Otterbein EEC Daycare

HISTORY

Otterbein Early Education Center is a ministry of Otterbein Church which began operating in September 1996. The center was opened to meet a need in the community and to make use of a newly renovated building that sat empty most of the week. Opening with less than ten children in 1996, we have grown to serving 113 children daily.

The center is governed by a board consisting of church members who work to ensure a connection between the church and center.

PHILOSOPHY

We are committed to provide a stimulating developmentally appropriate environment where children grow physically, socially, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. We believe that all children are special and a gift from God. Children of all ages need to hear this in their homes and have it reinforced in as many places and settings as possible. Our desire is to reinforce and build into the life of each child an openness to Jesus Christ and a sense of His great love for them.

We feel that while your child is enrolled at Otterbein is our responsibility to nurture them so that they feel safe, secure and loved. We want to instill in each child an excitement for learning that will grow each year. Our center staff do everything possible to ensure that your needs and the needs of your child are met.

Our classes are grouped by age and our activities are based on a child’s natural curiosity and creativity. Center staff work hard to develop age-appropriate curriculums for all age groups. Christian values are taught through regular bible activities and modeled by the actions of the staff.

NAEYC

To follow our goal of providing high-quality early childhood education to our clients, Otterbein pursued accreditation through the National Association of Young Children (NAEYC) in 2002. Since that time, we have constantly maintained our accreditation status.

What is NAEYC accreditation?

A voluntary comprehensive process of internal self-study and continuous quality improvement.

What does high-quality mean for an early childhood program?

A high-quality program will provide a safe and nurturing environment while promoting healthy development for young children. NAEYC-Accredited programs demonstrate their quality by meeting the 10 NAEYC Early Learning Program Standards, which are research-based best practices for young children’s development and learning.

These standards were created with input from experts and educators from around the country. The standards define what NAEYC believes all early learning programs should provide.

The 10 NAEYC standards are:

  1. Relationships

  2. Curriculum

  3. Teaching

  4. Assessment of Child Progress

  5. Health

  6. Staff Competencies, Preparation and Support

  7. Families

  8. Community Relationships

  9. Physical Environment

  10. Leadership and Management

NAEYC accreditation is awarded for a five-year ter. During that period, programs submit annual reports documenting that they are consistently meeting the program standards. For more information visit www.naeyc.org.

KEYSTONE STARS

Otterbein Early Education Center has been designated a STARS 4 site since STARS began in 2002 and our school age program has worked through the STARS system being designated as STARS 4 site in 2018. Both sites continue to meet or exceed the required performance standards.

Keystone STARS is an initiative of the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) and has four primary goals:

  • To improve the quality of early care and education;

  • To support early care and education providers in meeting their quality improvement goals;

  • To recognize programs for continuous quality improvement and meeting higher quality standards;

  • To provide families a way to choose a quality early care and education program.

These goals improve the quality of early childhood programs through:

The STARS performance standards provide the foundation for the program and are grouped into four STAR levels. All licensed providers child care providers in Pennsylvania begin at a STAR 1. Each level builds upon the previous level and utilizes research-based best practices to promote quality early learning environments and positive child outcomes. The standards address staff qualifications and professional development, the early learning program, partnerships with family and community, and leadership and management.

Additional information can be found at: www.pakeys.org/keystone-stars/

PBIS

Otterbein Early Education Center was recognized by the Pennsylvania PBIS Network for implementing Program-Wide PBIS with fidelity at the universal intervention tier. In 2020, we were recognized as one of only 2 centers in the state for implementing the PBIS program at all 3 tiers with fidelity.

PBIS is a nation-wide evidence-based approach of classroom management and systems that promotes a positive culture in an educational setting. It provides teachers and families the tools and strategies to optimize the teachings of social emotional skills and emotional literacy. Together, staff and families partner in teaching children appropriate ways to express emotions, handle problems solving, and create healthy relationships with peers.

At Otterbein Early Education Center, we developed and implemented policies and procedures to:

  • Decrease challenging behaviors through consistent expectations

  • Improve social emotional wellness through intentional teaching

  • Increase staff satisfaction through peer support and coaching

  • Increase family satisfaction through honest feedback and trusting relationships

15 Best Places to Live in Idaho / Travel Guides

With the state capital of Boise nestled right in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Idaho can be said to be an adventure state. With almost unlimited outdoor activities to explore; fishing and rafting have always been Idaho’s popular pastimes.
Not only that, but Yellowstone National Park, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, and Silverwood Theme Park on your doorstep, which Idaho doesn’t like.
As far as where to live, Idaho is highly recommended by many. Far from the richest states in the US, Idaho is home to 1.6 million people with a median income of $47,000; $5,000 a year is below the national average. Suffice to say, this is a state filled with humble, hard-working Americans, and the community spirit seems to prevail wherever you choose to pawn your hat.
When it comes to deciding where is the best place for you to live, there are several factors that everyone should pay attention to; cost of living, employment opportunities and the average cost of a home. For parents or willing parents, factors such as the availability of good public schools and crime rates are also important.
We considered all of these factors and more when developing this list of 15 Best Places to Live in Idaho . We also listened to the opinions and opinions of local residents in each area, because statistics do not always give a reliable picture of the area, and the people who live there, however.

1. Boise

Source: Charles Knowles / Shutterstock
Boise
With an outstanding overall A rating, Boise is the best place to live in Idaho for many reasons. Undeniably good schools and reasonable cost of living. This will surely be music to the ears of a young family! With the median home value nationwide and median rent $100 a month less than the national median, Boise is below average in every right way!
Where Boise is not below average in its options for passengers and jobs. As a city of 214,000 people, there are plenty of job opportunities in the area. We say that inside the city, Boise feels more like a small city than a state capital.
Locals describe Boise as a hidden gem, we’d be inclined to agree. Located in the heart of Treasure Valley, you are only 20 minutes away from America’s great wilderness.

2. Moscow

Source: Charles Knowles / Shutterstock
Moscow
As close but fair as the second best place to live in Idaho, the humble city of Moscow. This small town of 24,000 people is becoming more and more popular with millennials. As with any place that millennials take home, we can expect Moscow to see little development over the next decade. millennium. The average monthly rent is $800. This is a very accessible place for young people starting their careers and moving up the corporate ladder..
As a student city, Moscow is a diverse and noisy place to live; Lots of opportunities to socialize and take up new hobbies.

3. Sun Valley

Source: CSNafzger / shutterstock
Sun Valley
Who would have thought that a small rural village like Sun Valley would be ranked third in Idaho? Alas, it is! If small and rural aren’t adjectives that turn you on, then let’s try weird and cozy.
Sun Valley is home to a very close-knit community of just under 1,500 permanent residents. If they don’t know each other by name, they will recognize each other by their faces!
Sun Valley is one of the most expensive areas to buy real estate. Here’s an Idaho life plan; We start in Moscow, rent it out and save up for a house. Enough to save and hop up the stairs of a property in Boise, a great place to raise a family. When the kids are gone and your working life is over, move to Sun Valley and live happily ever after… it’s that simple!

4. Sugar City

Source: sevenMaps7 / shutterstock
Sugar City
Although Sugar City has fewer people than Sun Valley, it is a cool area; 1300 people live. Sugar City is a great place to live and almost missed out on being one of the top 3 places in Idaho.
Real estate here is not only excellent quality, excellent value for money and very affordable price. The median home value is $168,300—lower than the national average.
With a near non-existent crime rate and a good selection of schools, Sugar City is the perfect place to raise a family. According to residents, one of the disadvantages of Sugar City is the small variety of restaurants. To be fair, an area with less than 1,500 people is to be expected.

5. Meridian

Source: Charles Knowles / Shutterstock
Meridian
Located within easy reach east of Boise, residents simply love Meridian. In fact, we can quote them “I truly love everything about Meridian!”. The only thing a resident could complain about was the harsh winters.
There are 47 schools in the Meridian community, almost all of which boast above-average test scores and a successful graduation stream.
If starting a family within Boise City hasn’t appealed, then perhaps Meridian can provide you with the balance you’re looking for. With great schools for young people and affordable commuter routes in Boise to assess countless job opportunities, Meridian is a bit of a winner.

6. Ketchum

Source: Maxine Livingston / Shutterstock
Ketchum
Ketchum is the closest town to Sun Valley. If luxurious Sun Valley feels a bit far away, try doubling the population and adding a suburban rather than rural vibe.
Long-term residents describe Ketchum as a special place and never tire of the outdoor activities that are at their doorsteps.
Ketchum home prices can still be slightly higher than other areas in the northeastern United States but take a critical look at the value for money when researching real estate in the area. For example, 89$9,000 may seem like a big investment, but you get a large, spacious 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom family home that will grow with you and your brood. The Eagle in Idaho may sound strange if you say it over and over again very quickly (you’re trying, aren’t you?!), but this mid-sized city on Highway 44 firmly deserves its place in our top ten.
Eagle is a happy and community-oriented city of 21,000 people. It has many high performing schools, reasonable cost of living, and convenient commuter routes to Boise City.
Cost of living is slightly higher than the neighboring meridian, but the cost of a house will be affordable for many working families. $274,000 for a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom family home is a fair price.
Like anywhere else in Idaho, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors from your home base in Eagle..

8. Ammon

Source: Zechariah Judy / Wikimedia
Ammon
Not far from the city of Idaho Falls is the outer city of Ammon, which has a population of 14,000 people. Property prices here are a bit of a steal, and for those looking to rent, you’re in luck in Ammon; the average monthly rent is $761.
Although on paper the edge of a city, Ammon has developed (and successfully preserved) the homely atmosphere of a small town. Locals comment that they are very happy living here, and with larger cities like Idaho Falls accessible in less than an hour, they get all the shopping and entertainment facilities they could possibly want.
For parents looking for a place to live in Idaho, Ammon deserves your attention. Although none of the 22 public schools have an A, they consistently perform above the national average. is located just around the corner from the Sawtooth National Forest. As a place to start a family, Hayley has little to complain about; good schools, low crime rate and community atmosphere. In fact, Hayley boasts that he has the best selection of public schools in all of Idaho.
Sawtooth National Forest provides children with access to the exciting and enchanting American wilderness. Although not only children, hiking and camping in the forest will give any adult the opportunity to reconnect with nature and be completely free.
The median household income in Hailey is $61,000, slightly above the national average. This has created a happy and diverse community of permanent residents.

10. Garden City

Source: Knowles Gallery / Flickr
Garden City
Garden City, located on the outskirts of Boise, is a suburb of the state capital of Idaho. With 11,300 people calling in the neighborhood, it has a diverse and hard working community of people..
As always, access to outdoor activities is easily achieved despite the garden city’s suburban nature.
The monthly rent in Garden City is idealistic, to say the least; For $775 a month, you have access to all the great amenities and amenities that Boise has to offer, including the labor market, at an affordable cost of living.
Garden City not only has high performing schools but also a good choice for parents; 35 public schools for the approximately 2,000 children who grow up in the area.

11. Pocatello

Source: Eric Kiamperud/Wikimedia
Pocatello
Pocatello area property prices are among the most affordable in all of Idaho. For $70,000 you can invest in an extraordinary 3 bedroom family home. We say invest, any property under $100,000 will be considered a “project”.
There are many houses in Pocatello that are ready to be entered and decorated to your taste. With an average home value of $133,000, be sure to find the best deal for you.
The crime rate in Pocatello is very low, well below the national average. Locals praise the area for its safety and confidence and say they are very happy living here. Describing Pocatello as “quiet, friendly and conservative”, there is little to be found in this cozy college town..

12. Idaho Falls

Source: Carlo Emanuele Barbie / shutterstock
Idaho Falls
Residents are excited about life in Idaho Falls, and it’s understandable. Housing prices are fair and monthly rents are low. The city was created along the Snake River, so fishing and outdoor activities, as always in Idaho, are not lacking.
Being a large city, Idaho Falls has a lot going on to keep everyone entertained. For example, the Idaho Museum and the Idaho Falls Zoo, as well as movie theaters, restaurants, and 10-pin bowling all keep this community active away from home. 0003 Idaho is a safe state to live in, and Idaho Falls is no exception.

13. Rexburg

Source: B Brown / Shutterstock
Rexburg
The small town of Rexburg is located in Madison County. The campus of Brigham Young University, Idaho, fluctuates here, but has a population of 26,000.
This suburban area is as safe as any city in Idaho, and locals are quick to note the place’s family atmosphere. The locals say that although Rexburg is a small town, there are plenty of opportunities and things to do to keep you occupied and entertained.
University students rarely want to move after graduation, as Rexburg is expanding rapidly. Suffice it to say, if you come back in a year or so, this college town will no doubt rise up. Boating and fishing are, unsurprisingly, popular pastimes for Hayden residents.
Although suburban on paper, many of the homes on the market right now are tucked away from the main road, sheltered by evergreen trees, and also offer extensive garden areas.
Real estate in Heiden is very affordable. An investment of $349,000 will allow you to build a home with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a two car garage. If you are looking for an aesthetic space, then a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom vacation home would require a reasonable investment of $225,000. places to live in Idaho, the humble city of St. Anthony. Home to a friendly and welcoming group of 3,470 residents, there is little to complain about in this small town. The median home price is a very reasonable $106,000 and the monthly rent is in the $600 mark..
Due to lack of public schools, St. Anthony’s is listed below. With only one school available in elementary, middle and high school, parents have little to no choice. However, these schools perform at a high level and the students in these schools are happy and study well.
Locals simply remark that their only complaint is that the winters are harsh, just like they are statewide. Here in St. Anthony, there is no problem.

Lava Hot Springs City Hot Springs

The hot springs are rich in minerals and were known for their healing properties by the original inhabitants, who called them Poha Ba, the Land of Healing Waters.

Today, Hot Springs is operated by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Lava Hot Springs Foundation. Lava hot springs are famous for their five hot pools. Also an olympic pool, water slides, an indoor water center and Tailor Kiddie’s Cove.

Hells Canyon

Many travelers want to see the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Which separates Idaho and Oregon as a scenic and recreational area.

There is no doubt about that. At about 8,000 feet deep, Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America. It can be explored on countless hiking trails. Early explorers also passed through here, so you’ll find historical sites on both sides of the canyon.

Idaho Falls

The falls in Idaho are not very deep, but they are quite wide. The falls in downtown Idaho Falls only drop 22 feet (7 meters), but they extend 600 feet (180 meters) across the Snake River.

They are best viewed from the Snake River Greenbelt. The Green Belt, the city’s main attraction, is popular with bikers and sidecars. Also those who go down the rocks for a little fishing. The city itself is the best city in eastern Idaho. It is the economic, artistic and cultural center of the region.

Lake Coeur d’Alene

Lake Coeur d’Alene is a natural lake near the town of Coeur d’Alene. In the past, the lake was used to transport lumber, but today it is a popular tourist destination for many due to its beautiful beaches, scenic views, and endless opportunities for outdoor activities. The Northern Idaho Centenary Trail runs along the north shore of the lake and is very popular with hikers, cyclists, and joggers.

Many other trails surround the lake and offer breathtaking views. Water sports are naturally very popular. You can go boating, kayaking, fishing and swimming in crystal clear waters. One popular activity is watching white eagles at Wolf Lodge Bay. If you love playing golf, you might want to play a few rounds at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. Known for its 14th hole, greenery that is in the lake and floats along the underwater cable.

Coeur d’Alene is one of the best places to visit in Idaho throughout the year, from Christmas lake cruises to summer Iron Man competitions.

Shoshone Falls

Shoshone Falls in Twin Falls, Idaho. Water falls on the Snake River from a height of 212 feet (65 meters), Niagara Falls only 167 feet (51 meters). Nevertheless, the Shoshone Falls are sometimes referred to as “Niagara West”.

Craters of the Moon National Monument

Craters of the Moon National Monument is a spooky place in southern Idaho. Lava formations make it deserted. A “thought” reminiscent of the surface of the moon, NASA astronauts were training on a lava field in preparation for landing on the moon. A flashlight is a must if you plan to explore lava caves.

Sun Valley

Sun Valley is Idaho’s premier ski and summer resort. The Sun Valley Hotel is located in central Idaho, surrounded by mountains that provide excellent skiing, skating and snowboarding in the winter. As well as golf, horseback riding, hiking and fishing.

Sun Valley Resort is located in a sunny valley near Ketchum, between the slopes of the Bald and Dollar Mountains. This winter resort is unique. With spectacular skiing, a 26,000-square-foot family center to cater for your every need, and a plethora of gourmet restaurants, it’s no surprise that Sun Valley has become the winter playground for the rich and famous.

Boise

Boise, located in southwestern Idaho, is not only the state’s largest city, but also its capital. Part of Idaho’s Treasure Valley, Boise (pronounced “BOY-see”) was a stop along the Oregon Trail. City 8th Street through downtown is now a pedestrian zone.

This is where you will find the Basque Block, where you can learn about Boise’s Basque heritage. The northern end of Boise has old houses and tree-lined streets. The American Planning Association in 2008 named it one of America’s 10 Great Neighborhoods. If you’re a jazz fan, don’t miss the annual Gene Harris Jazz Festival.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone, America’s favorite park. Established in 1998, it is the only wildlife sanctuary in the area. This means that visitors can see gray wolves, grizzly bears, moose, white-tailed deer, bison and other North American animals. As a special event, visitors are invited to participate in bear cub feedings. There is also a popular zoo covering one acre of land, where farm animals and birds live freely. Occasionally, visitors can participate in bottle-feeding moose and deer.

This is a wonderful place to visit, with breathtaking scenery and lots of geothermal activity. Yellowstone is located primarily in Wyoming. Only one percent of the park is in Idaho.

Idaho Botanical Garden

There are over 800 species from 42 families planted in 14 different specialized gardens. Some of the specialized gardens are: Water Conservation Landscape, which focuses on plants that require very little water; Garden of Meditation; The Lewis and Clark Native Plant Garden, which contains 145 plant species that the two researchers collected between Great Falls in Montana and The Dalles in Oregon.

Museum of Purity

The Museum of Purity in Pocatello is not a cleaning museum, it does not contain detergents or brooms. This is a huge 75,000 square foot complex. It is based on the fact that cleanliness dominates everything that affects our lives. Such as clean air and water, clean language, health, clean bed and floor, clean politics, teeth, jokes, art, even clean arteries.

The goal of the museum is to present as many measurements of cleanliness as possible through exhibits. The tour with children takes at least an hour and a half, but much longer if you are a history or art lover.

Childcare vs. Daycare: What Is the Difference? (And Why It Matters)

“I need to drop the kids off at daycare first.”

“I’ll need to make childcare plans if we do that.”

For a lot of people, the words “childcare” and “daycare” are used interchangeably, referring to the service or place where people entrust someone else to look after their kids. Seems simple enough, right?

    Wrong.

While the distinction between the terms “childcare” and “daycare” may seem insignificant to the average person, it is an important issue to many early childhood education professionals.

To help you better understand what the fuss is about when using terms like “childcare” versus “daycare,” we asked Rasmussen University Early Childhood Education instructor Tosca Grimm to weigh in and explain the value of using language that reflects well on the field as a whole.

What’s the difference between childcare, daycare and preschool?

This is a trickier question than you might think. You can find center-based programs billed as “daycare,” “childcare” and “preschool” that, when well designed and run properly, are practically indistinguishable from one another. So what difference does a word make? Grimm says part of it boils down to the scope of what’s covered by each term.

“Preschool” is a perfectly valid term for programs that serve children ages three to five. But that also leaves out the infants and babies who are cared for by early childhood education professionals.

“Every preschooler was an infant or toddler first, and they need a place to be as well,” Grimm says.

The term “daycare” also has limitations—not all ECE professionals work strictly during the day. The other issue many early childhood educators find in the term is its lack of focus on the most important part of the care arrangement—the child. It’s a subtle difference in verbiage, but saying “childcare” instead of “daycare” puts the spotlight on the developmental needs of the child, and not the parents’ need for convenience.

Is it wrong to call childcare “daycare?”

For many ECE professionals, using “childcare” and “daycare” interchangeably isn’t some unforgivable offense—no one is getting banished from the field for using less-than-ideal terminology. Grimm believes those who use the term “daycare” certainly don’t intend for it to be derogatory. It is often merely a holdover term from a time where childcare services were far less professionally established, and little was known about the importance of ECE.

But it should be noted that for those who dedicate themselves to the field and take their important work seriously, the term “daycare” can feel dismissive.

“It’s kind of this inner-circle thing, where those who are authentic educators get it, and it just rubs us the wrong way,” Grimm says. “It’s like telling a professional football player, ‘Oh, that’s just a game with a bunch of sweaty guys running around with a ball.’”

While that’s technically a correct description at a basic level, it just doesn’t do justice to the amount of work and expertise needed to do it well. Early childhood educators are often well educated—many with Master’s degrees—and have devoted years of their lives learning the in-and-outs of child development and effective instructional strategies.

What terms do ECE professionals use instead of “daycare”?

Knowing the limitations of the term “daycare” is great, but you’re probably wondering what would be an acceptable alternative. There are several solid options that do a great job of representing the field:

    • Early childhood education centers
    • Childcare center
    • Early learning center
    • Child learning centers

Why should ECE professionals care about how people refer to childcare?

It might seem like a lot of worry over a choice of words, but this is all part of a big-picture consideration. The truth is that the field of early childhood education is still finding its professional footing and fighting to be taken seriously. While there’s plenty of evidence and research supporting the value of quality ECE programs, public perception can be stubborn.

Part of the solution to that is developing professional standards. These standards touch on everything from the educational attainment level of ECE professionals, curriculum standards and even the terminology used. Professional organizations like the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC®) are at the forefront of this push, but as with any overarching change to an industry, it takes time and advocacy from those in the field.

“[NAEYC®] is trying to bring some clarifying unity to the field,” Grimm says. Some issues, like educational attainment standards, are complicated and potentially contentious. But a standardized set of terminology is relatively easy to rally around and provide a unified front.

How can I help promote early childhood education?

So, how can you do your part? For one, avoid using the term “daycare” and do what you can to educate others in the field about the importance of professionally administered ECE programs. Grimm says that this push for more professional terminology isn’t meant to be haughty or elitist. It’s more of a gentle reminder that ECE professionals are more than just the people watching your children.

“The language we use to describe childcare creates a presentation of what the field is overall,” Grimm explains. “If we can change that terminology to be more truly authentic and representative of what the field entails and what we’re providing for children, it will help change the mindset people have about ECE.”

    Help raise the standard

Changing public perception about childcare versus daycare is no easy task. But speaking up and advocating for the value of high-quality childcare and early education programs can help turn the tide. To do that, you’ll need information to share.

    Why different matters

    Kids are incredibly different

Kids aren’t just mini adults. We know how different they are, and that changes everything about how we treat them, from their growing bodies to their developing minds.

    Partnering with you

Parents and caregivers know their child best, which is why you are the most important member of your child’s care team.

    Experience beyond compare

Because we see more and treat more children than any other hospital in the region, our unparalleled care leads to outcomes among the best in the country.

    Complete, convenient care

We understand that time is of the essence when your little one is sick. Instead of numerous appointments with different doctors, we coordinate your child’s appointments with all our specialists in one day.

    You’re in the right place

Red wagons in our halls, prescription pets rounding the floors and a lounge just for teens – it all helps put our patients at ease and create a supportive space just for them.

Where to go with a child in Moscow – the most interesting places sports. It opened at the end of 2019, but has already managed to establish itself as a great place to go with children and relatives in Moscow.

An alternative could be the Fantasy water park in Maryino, the Caribbean pirate water park in Petrovo-Dalny, or the cozy Kimberly Land, where babies from 2 months old can learn to swim accompanied by their parents in a special font. nine0003

    Parks

Parks — Pobeda, Gorky, Sokolniki, Zaryadye are very popular. In the summer, they have attractions, you can ride roller skates, bikes, boats, in the winter you can visit the skating rink, fairs, and of course, feed the squirrels.

Kuzminki Park will delight you with the largest skate park in the capital with jumps and a street zone. For children, dance and workout classes, English lessons and theater workshops are held here. A nice bonus – during the school holidays, most classes are free. nine0003

    Zoos

Where to go with children if you want to introduce them to the animal world? Definitely the zoo. There are many places in Moscow where you can look at animals.

    Moscow Zoo

The Moscow Zoo is home to over 7,000 species of animals brought from the most distant countries and continents. Most of us know that cats come in all shapes and sizes, but changes in their weight and appearance could indicate certain conditions like pregnancy, obesity, and illness.

It’s not always easy to figure out what’s causing some of these changes and there are a few factors to consider. While we all try to be responsible cat parents, things can become confusing, especially for a new and inexperienced owner.

Questions will come up as our kittens mature, questions like:

Is my cat pregnant or just fat? A pregnant cat’s belly will appear bloated halfway from the neck to the tail from above, and from the side slightly round and bulging. Their back won’t look particularly fat and their spine might even be visible while an overweight cat will be fat all over, neck and legs included.

If you want to know more about whether your cat is pregnant or just fat, then keep on reading!

    Let’s go!

How To Tell If A Cat Is Pregnant Or Fat?

If you have a male cat or a spayed cat the answer is simple, your cat has simply gained weight, but with female cats that haven’t been spayed, it’s a bit more complicated. We’ve gathered useful information to put you on the right path, but the best way to determine with 100% certainty if your kitty is pregnant or suffering from obesity is by taking them to the vet.

You’ll need the opinion and advice of an expert because both conditions are quite serious with two very different consequences. It’s also important to remember that your cat’s physical changes might be related to sickness despite your best efforts. According to Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine, “even provided with balanced nutrition, vaccines, and a good amount of love and attention, cats can still get sick.”

Of course, there are a few ways of figuring out if your cat is ready to bring her offspring into the world or has simply put on extra weight. The way to do it is to look closely for signs and symptoms that will give you enough information to establish your cat’s situation.

    Signs Your Cat Is Pregnant

Cat owners that keep their kitties strictly indoors or if they’ve been spayed are quite unlikely to find that their cat is pregnant. But if your cat has access to the outdoors and they haven’t been spayed then it’s quite possible that you might end up with more than one cat.

The same might happen to those who think that their kitty is still too young to get pregnant, so they let her roam around the yard. It can also happen to indoor cats that managed to slip through an accidentally open door. Whatever the case might be if you find your cat’s body changing then there are a few clues that can tell you if it’s pregnancy-related.

    1. A Cat In Heat

For a cat to become pregnant they need to be unspayed and of breeding age. Maybe you’ve noticed your cat’s behavior change, or the change was minor, so you didn’t pay too much attention.

It’s not always easy to spot the early signs of a cat in heat and cat owners might think that their kitty is not ready to be spayed. But according to a review on Breeding and the Reproduction in Cats, published in the Veterinary Manual, “the queen (female cat) can enter her first heat as young as 4 months of age, and she generally has 2 or 3 cycles during the breeding season, typically February to October.”

Most people would consider 4 months old to be a kitten still!

This makes it clear that cats are quite successful at breeding since they are seasonally polyestrous. That means their heat cycles last for a few days and if they don’t manage to become pregnant then the estrus process starts again in one or three weeks.

When the mating season approaches any spayed cat will naturally try to get out of the house. For a cat that has constant access to the outdoors the chances of leaving the house unnoticed and getting pregnant are much higher. Even if your cat stays in the perimeter of your house, there will still be male cats in search of a mate.

Female cats or queens as they’re also called have a very specific way of showing that they’re in heat that might confuse you. According to Veterinary Centers of America, the most notable signs of estrus, are behavioral. This means that your cat will most likely become very affectionate.

So, if you find yourself asking, is my cat pregnant or just fat, try to remember what their behavior was like before the weight gain. Was she searching for more attention than usual, like rubbing excessively against you or other objects around the house? Cats in heat can also become very vocal, and when petted or stroked along the spine they’ll arch their back.

    2. Eating Habits

A cat’s nutritional requirements can change throughout her life’s cycle. If your cat is pregnant then their calorie intake will become higher and you might find your cat asking for more portions.

A cat pregnancy can last from 58 to 70 days and according to studies, “a healthy, well-fed queen will experience steady weight gain throughout the pregnancy. ” That’s why it’s important to determine whether your cat is actually pregnant because if you decide to change your cat’s calorie intake you might end up with an overfed cat or an underfed cat.

Noticing your cat’s body changing and gaining weight could be a sign of simply overeating, but what if your cat is pregnant? Both obesity and low weight can lead to unsuccessful or difficult pregnancies. That’s why monitoring your cat’s weight during pregnancy is important and a vet is the best place to get all the help you’ll need to have healthy kitten offspring.

    3. Physical Changes:

There are a few changes your cat will go through if they’re indeed pregnant and they’re easy enough to spot. The first physical change you might notice is rapid weight gain. Research shows that “the mother’s food consumption will often reach 50% more than her level before pregnancy.” That’s only natural since she’s eating for more than one cat!

Cats that are pregnant also end up having a distinct body shape as their tummy grows and it’s oftentimes referred to as a “burro” shape because it resembles the belly of a donkey. Still, you might not notice much of a change at first, but after a few weeks, it will become very clear.

You can check out this cat-mama, she’s definitely sporting the “burro” shape!

Apart from the swelling of the abdomen, you’ll notice that the weight won’t be distributed to the rest of their body like the legs and neck. It’s mostly their tummy that grows and if you observe your kitty from the side, you’ll see that they look a little swayback.

Finally, you may notice your cat’s nipples become enlarged, but this could also mean that your cat is simply in heat and not yet pregnant. Usually, at around three weeks into the pregnancy, you might see that your cat’s nipples become bright pink and that they poke through the fur, depending of course on the length. This change is also called, “pinking up.”

    4. Nesting Behaviors

Another change you might notice if your cat is pregnant which has nothing to do with their appearance is nesting. This means that your cat “may choose a quiet place and start arranging blankets for a birthing area,” explains veterinarian Dr. Rachel Barrack.

Central Texas Veterinary Hospital also states that “most develop an unusually sweet and loving disposition and demand more affection and attention. However, some may become uncharacteristically irritable.” This usually happens during the final week, and your cat might even go missing because some cats prefer complete privacy.

After you’ve taken your kitty and established that they’re pregnant it’s important to keep them inside the house. Try to find a warm room or an area in your place that’s isolated and safe. Place a large box where your cat and her kittens can all move around freely and make sure she has all the necessities she’ll need, like food, water, and a litterbox.

    5. Morning Sickness

This is not as common for most cats, but it can happen in the early stages of your cat’s pregnancy and it’s important to notice it. Finding your cat vomiting and staying away from their food might confuse you and make you think that they’re not pregnant.

This could be a short-term behavior, or you might have to take your cat to the vet if it keeps happening.

It’s also possible that your cat has an ectopic pregnancy, which means that a fertilized egg is growing outside the main cavity of the uterus. Symptoms include vomiting anorexia, urinary problems as well as signs as depression and lethargy. To avoid complications it’s important to pay attention and be observant of these changes in your cat!

    6. Changes in Behavior

You might of course observe physical changes in your cat that could make you wonder, is my cat pregnant or just fat, but if your cat is pregnant, you might also find indicative changes in their personality as well.

Of course, all cats are different, and some might even stay the same throughout their pregnancy. Veterinarian Krista Williams also states that “the cat’s behavior alters very little, although some cats become more loving and few become aggressive.”

If seeing your cat’s tummy growing isn’t enough of a sign that she’s going through a significant change you might want to also pay attention to her mood and expressiveness. A cat that shows signs of aggression, as well as a cat that’s purring, might also be in pain, caused by some illness or discomfort.

The Importance Of Spaying/Neutering Your Cat

Spaying and neutering a housecat is important for a number of reasons and their health is number one! According to the Humane Society of the United States, neutered/spayed cats have a longer life span and the risk of certain types of cancers is reduced.

Specifically, “intact female cats and dogs have a greater chance of developing pyometra (a potentially fatal uterine infection) and other cancers of the reproductive system. For male cats, there’s a significantly smaller risk of getting testicular cancer and results in lower rates of prostate cancer.”

Other studies show that “female cats are at significantly increased risk of mammary tumors, and sexually intact cats have a sevenfold higher risk than spayed cats.” And while the health of our kitties should be our number one priority, we’re also responsible for not contributing to the overpopulation of stray kittens.

It’s important to remember that the mating season can be quite dangerous for your kitty. Cats tend to be more aggressive and neutering/spaying your kitty should reduce their natural instincts and the urge to fight. This way you can protect your cat from potential wounds and transmitted diseases.

Make sure you visit your vet and get the right information on when is the best time for your feline companion to be spayed/neutered and the steps you’ll need to take. If you’ve got a cat in heat, you can find a list of low-cost spay/neuter clinics across the globe thanks to PetSmart by clicking here.

Signs That Your Cat Is Overweight

For cat parents that lead busy lives or have a free-roaming feline companion, it might come as a shock to suddenly see their fluffball beauty rocking a curvier look. In fact, studies show that in North America, “obesity is the most common preventable disease in cats.”

So, what if you want to look for symptoms of a cat being overweight first rather than pregnant, where would you start?

    Physical changes

In some cats, weight gain might be harder to notice and the process might’ve been gradual enough to elude you. Long-haired cats especially the ones with a robust physique like the Maine Coon and Norwegian Forest cats, for example, could get away with this since the extra fat could be concealed by the extra layers of fur.

To figure out your cat’s condition, you should examine them visually and by touch. Look at your cat from above and look at their waistline which should create a slight dent behind the ribs. If you don’t spot any waist then your cat is quite possibly overweight.

Look at your cat from the side and observe their stomach, if it’s saggy and form a sort of pouch, then this is also another sign. Make sure to also run your hands on either side along your cat’s body. Your cat’s ribs, spine, and hipbones should feel like the back of your knuckles and if you can’t feel them then this means they’re overweight.

According to studies another hint to your cat’s condition is their fur. “If they have greasy patches of hair, matted fur, or flaky skin, they may be overweight and unable to clean that area of their body.” Observing these details will help you understand more about your cat’s physical condition. It should help you compare their current state with how they used to be before the weight gain.

    Body Condition Score

McDaniel, VMD, and a lecturer in clinical sciences state that “probably 50% of cats seen at veterinary clinics these days are overweight, if not obese.” She also supports studies suggesting that 5-10% of cats could be considered overweight and 40% obese.

The way veterinary clinics figure out the weight of a pet is by using the Body Condition Score. BCS and Muscle Condition Score help assess the body fat and the muscle mass of your cat. It’s easy enough to find a BCS chart from organizations like the American Animal Hospital Association or other places online, but self-diagnosing shouldn’t be your number one choice when it comes to your kitty’s health.

Being able to consult a chart like that can be of course helpful with your cat’s weight loss journey and it can also be useful knowledge to have if your cat is aging. But you should first consult your vet and ask them to explain how this charting system works so you can keep a better eye on your cat.

    Weight Gain

If your cat isn’t suffering from any disease, then it could be a simple matter of overeating and the lack of proper exercise. Cats that are usually spending their lives indoors or have little to no access to the outdoors can have fewer opportunities to exercise. That’s why it’s the cat owner’s responsibility to offer extra activities and regulate their cat’s access to food.

The more you begin to neglect your kitty the more problems will arise and weight gain isn’t the only consequence. Cats can be really stressful creatures and recent changes to your cat’s environment can cause anxiety and even depression. In these situations, there are cats that will lose weight and others might end up overeating. For instance, if you’ve brought another cat into your home, one of them might begin to stress eat and end up gaining too much weight.

How To Maintain A Healthy Cat Weight?

After checking your cat and realizing that they might be overweight the next step would be a vet consultation. There your cat will go through the proper examination that will determine what’s causing their weight gain. And of course, you’ll know how much booty your kitty needs to lose.

It’s not easy to measure how much fat a cat has, and body weight is usually used as a guide to determine whether a cat’s weight is above the ideal. For your kitty to be considered overweight and obese they’d have to be 10% and over 20% heavier than the ideal body weight accordingly.

Once you have all the information you need the important part is sticking to the plan of action! It’s crucial that you don’t push your cat, but you also shouldn’t ignore your cat’s weight. Diabetes, osteoarthritis, raspatory issues, and heart disease are some of the diseases/illnesses caused by obesity.

Make gradual changes, with protein-rich cat food, preferably wet food that is high in protein, and should help maintain your cat’s muscle mass as they grow. In the journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Debra L. Zoran, DVM, Ph.D., DACVIM, states that “cats are metabolically adapted to preferentially use protein and fat as energy sources”.

Proper nutrition is essential for your kitty’s health and with wet food, she will get important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals and it’s also highly digestible. Don’t forget to measure your cat’s food portions and keep a strict schedule. An automatic wet food feeder can help your cat enjoy fresh food in smaller portions throughout the day and it can be perfect for the owners that are working away from home.

If you run a multicat household and one of your cats show signs of obesity or one of them is stealing food, then the Surefeed Microchip Pet Feeder might be perfect for you! This feeder will make sure that all your cats are adequately fed and that no one will be able to steal food from each other ever again, thanks to the chip recognition technology.

Try to avoid treats or substitute them with low-calorie snacks instead. Make sure your cat has a cat tree tall enough to climb and jump on. Buy feathery toys and play with your cat as often as possible to keep them fit and don’t forget to add a loving cuddle in the mix!

Keep a close track of the weight-loss progress to make sure there is one. Dr. McDaniel’s advice is to aim for a “gradual weight loss, perhaps one or two percent loss of body weight per week. ” She also suggests that “an owner of a chubby cat purchase a baby scale in order to monitor a cat’s weight at home.”

    Visit Your Vet

It might take you only a second to realize that your cat is pregnant or you might mistake the excess weight with overeating, but because pregnancy can be a sensitive condition, it’s important to see your vet.

According to VCA Hospitals, “a veterinary examination three to four weeks after breeding will usually confirm her pregnancy.” Once the condition of your kitty is certain your vet will explain to you the process of pregnancy your cat will go through and the necessary steps you need to take in order for it to be successful.

Another reason you’ll need to go to the veterinary clinic according to John A. Bukowski, DVM, MPH, Ph.D. is pseudopregnancy or false pregnancy. There’s a chance your kitty might show signs of pregnancy and “this usually begins at the end of estrus and can last for several months.”

Then again when it comes to weight gain the advice of a vet can also help you deal with it properly. A good veterinarian will ask you some important and detailed questions about your cat’s diet, exercise, and general wellbeing. Since cats could show signs of more serious conditions too late, seeing them putting on weight should be enough to visit your local pet clinic.

Your vet should perform a thorough physical examination. Depending on your kitty’s condition they’ll do some blood and laboratory tests. In case your kitty needs treatment, you should listen to your vet and follow their instructions. If you’re not completely sure, you could ask for a second opinion from a different veterinarian.

At the end of the day, even if you’re just wondering, is my cat pregnant or just fat, the best way to get a clear answer is asking the people who know best. They’ll be able to help you further on with your cat’s pregnancy or weight loss journey.

    Closing Thoughts

Having a cat comes with a dash of confusion, a pinch of am I doing this right, and of course love! Love oftentimes leads to treats and too many treats are bound to confusion. The kind of confusion that makes you wonder if your cat’s just getting a little chubby…or are they expecting!

To rid yourself of the foggy state of what might be happening take your kitty to the vet!

You could try to observe your cat, look for hints and clues to see if it’s belly fat or kittens, but even if you figure it out you’ll still need to take them to the vet, so just do it!

Is My Cat Pregnant? How to Find Out and When to Expect Kittens

    • Tips to Prepare for the Big Day

You might have read stacks of books when you were expecting your own bundle of joy. But do you know what happens when your cat becomes pregnant?

Don’t load Fluffy’s bowl with pickles and ice cream. Just treat them like the queen that they are — literally.

The process of a mama cat getting ready to have kittens is called “queening.” A female cat can get pregnant when they are as young as 4 months old, unless they have been spayed to prevent that.

Queens can keep going into heat every 2 to 3 weeks from the spring through the early fall, making them ready to reproduce more often than not.

A cat’s pregnancy lasts about 63-65 days. So, a cat can have kittens when they are only 6 months old.

    Are They Pregnant?

The best way to find out is to make an appointment with your vet. They can confirm that kittens are on the way, and get an idea of how many, in a few ways:

    • Feeling your cat’s belly is sometimes useful but not always accurate.
    • Ultrasound can confirm a pregnancy after day 16. Ultrasound cannot tell you how many kittens your cat is carrying.
    • X-rays can determine the number of kittens to expect, but they are not always accurate, and they shouldn’t be done until your cat is at least 42 days pregnant – and generally not recommended until 55 days.

There are a few clues that you may notice, too.

The cat’s belly will get big around 30 days after they mate. Another symptom that appears as the pregnancy continues, 2 to 3 weeks after they conceive, is their nipples enlarge and redden (also called “pinking up”).

    Caring for Your Pregnant Queen

It’s rare, but in the earliest stages of pregnancy, your cat may have “morning sickness” that might show up as a lack of appetite or vomiting. If that keeps happening, take them to the vet. With the surge of hormones and changes to their uterus, they may show signs of fatigue. This phase will eventually fade after those first few weeks pass.

Just like many other females in the animal kingdom carrying a bun in the oven (or for a cat, an average of 4 buns per litter), your cat may need extra food and calories while they are expecting.

They’ll eat about 1.5 times their normal diet as their pregnancy draws to a close, so make sure they have constant access to their normal fare. Your vet will probably recommend that you feed your pregnant cat kitten food or food that’s labeled for pregnant and lactating cats throughout their pregnancy and during the period they nurse their young one.

Viruses can spread to kittens before they’re born, so keep up with your cat’s vaccination schedule. If your pregnant cat is due for their regular vaccination and deworming/flea treatment or needs medication, check with your vet first to make sure the treatment is safe for them. It is best to vaccinate prior to breeding, as most vaccines are not safe to give during pregnancy.

Tips to Prepare for the Big Day

Make your home a comfortable place for the impending birth. If you normally let your cat go outside, stop that, to avoid them to go into labor during one of their walkabouts.

About 2 weeks before the due date, you may notice your cat is acting different as they get into nesting mode. To help out, you can scan your home for a good birthing spot for them. Find a medium-sized box with a low opening, and cover it with newspapers, old towels, and soft blankets to create a relaxing area for the mother and their future kittens.

You should place the nesting box in a quiet corner of your house. Let your pregnant cat visit it often, before the birth, so they get used to the area and feel comfortable.

Keep in mind that you can guide your cat as much as possible and set up the ultimate birthing spot, but they are going to do what they are going to do. If they want to give birth in a laundry basket, behind the garbage can, or in the back of your closet, they will.

When you notice that the cat is in nesting mode, take them to the vet for their final prenatal visit. The vet will give you more information about how to prepare for the delivery, check on the mother and kitties’ health, and tell you want to do if there’s an emergency during the birth.

Two clues that the big day is coming: Cats usually stop eating 24 hours before they give birth, and their temperature drops below 100 F. You’ll meet those kittens soon!

    Pregnancy in cats | Hills

If you are not planning to have offspring from your cat, it is always best to have her spayed. Pregnancy in cats is a serious event, and if you decide to let a cat give birth, then you are on a gamble.

The mother cat is more than capable of taking care of everything related to childbirth, so it’s best to leave it to her. However, there are a number of things you can do to make this process easier.

    Features

There are a number of signs that can tell if your cat is pregnant. The first indicator is a violation of the cycle. Another early sign is that the nipples become more prominent and darker, red in color. A pregnant cat also starts to eat more, in addition, she may have bouts of “morning sickness”. After five weeks, it will become noticeable that the cat’s belly is enlarged, and it will continue to grow until the time of delivery.

You may also notice significant changes in your cat’s behavior. She can suddenly become very affectionate and will want to spend all the time around you. Alternatively, a previously very friendly cat may become withdrawn and angry. Don’t worry, these behavioral changes are normal.

Pregnancy in cats is usually uneventful. If you are concerned about your pet or want to confirm her pregnancy, take her to the veterinarian. By examination or with the help of ultrasound, he will confirm that the expectant mother is completely healthy and really expects offspring.

    Getting ready

During pregnancy, you don’t have to do much for the expectant mother, you just need to make sure she gets good, healthy food and enough water.

Once pregnancy is confirmed, you should switch your cat to a premium kitten diet such as Hills Science Plan Kitten (everyday kitty food) to provide additional nutrients for the cat and future kittens. Feed your cat this diet until the kittens are weaned. Don’t be surprised if your cat isn’t enthusiastic about food right after giving birth. She has been carrying kittens and will likely prefer to eat several small meals a day.

As the delivery approaches, the cat will start looking for a quiet, cozy place where she can settle down. Set up a sort of box with towels inside and encourage your cat to use it as a hiding place. But don’t worry if she ends up choosing somewhere else.

The approach of labor is usually accompanied by the separation of milk from the nipples. If you monitor the body temperature of the animal, you will notice that just before birth, it will drop to 38.9 ° C.

When labor begins, your cat may purr loudly and you will see contractions. Remember that in most cases, the cat can handle the birth on its own.

    Little by little

On average, there are from 2 to 5 kittens in a litter. Usually between the birth of kittens, the cat takes breaks from 10 minutes to an hour. If more than 3 hours have passed since the birth of the last kitten and you know that there are still unborn kittens, you need to take the cat to the veterinarian.

At birth, kittens are usually free of the amniotic membrane. Usually the mother herself helps them cope with this task. Otherwise, you need to carefully cut it and release the kitten.

Mother cat licks newborn kittens to make them breathe. If she’s too exhausted from labor to do it, or has her next kitten, you’ll have to do it yourself. Gently dry the kitten with a towel in the same way as if the mother were licking it. You must turn the kitten upside down to clear the airways of the fluid.

    Placenta removal

After the birth of each kitten, the placenta must pass. If it remains in the cat’s uterus, it can lead to the development of an infectious process. Count the number of afterbirths and compare it with the number of kittens born. Don’t be surprised if a cat eats one or more afterbirths. This is completely normal and safe. If it turns out that there is an afterbirth in the uterus of the animal, it is urgent to take the animal to the veterinarian.

The mother cat usually bites the umbilical cord herself. If she doesn’t, you’ll have to help her. Tie a piece of strong string around the umbilical cord about an inch from the kitten’s body. With another length of thread, tie off the umbilical cord about an inch closer to the mother’s body, and then cut the umbilical cord with sharp scissors between the two ties.

Once newborn kittens have been washed, they should immediately crawl to their mother and start suckling. During this period, it is best to leave your cat and her babies alone in a safe place. Congratulations – you now have a whole cat family!

CAT AND PREGNANT STOMACH | Medical center “GrantiMed”

Back in ancient times, they checked whether a girl became pregnant or not by placing a cat on her stomach. If a woman was expecting a baby, then the cat, having chosen her tummy, would take a nap there. Some people do not believe that cats feel pregnancy, because they are not so strongly attached to the owner. But the opinion of female owners of cats is unequivocal – for sure, the cat pays special attention to the pregnant belly, often lies on it.

Backgammon signs endow cats with mystical and magical properties, both for good and for bad. Most positive superstitions concern tricolor cats. They were called three-haired and rich, considered brownie girlfriends, amulets for the home, “magnets” for good luck and material wealth. Accordingly, such cats benefit a pregnant woman, and an unborn child receives a protector. But there is another, no less common sign: in this way, the animal signals that trouble is about to happen to the fetus or that a child with a bristle on the back will be born. We can say for sure – even a weighty cat will not crush the baby in the uterus, he is very reliably protected by his mother’s belly and amniotic fluid. But pregnancy is still a slightly different state when you need to rely on signs and all kinds of superstitions. With all the mystery of cats, their behavior can be found quite scientific explanations.

      1. The cat sensitively notices the slightest changes in the habitual behavior of the owner, her way of life (for example, the woman began to pay a little less attention to her, focusing more on herself, the movements of the owner became more careful).

      2. The animal senses the woman’s pregnancy by changing the smell of pheromones and hormones secreted by the woman.

      3. Cats are very thermophilic and choose the warmest parts of the human body for themselves. From the moment of conception in the uterus of a woman, rapid development of the fetus unfolds: there is a rapid division of cells, the entire reproductive system is rebuilt. Of course, at the same time, the stomach becomes warmer than usual – and the cat just needed it.

But, of course, they are not so pragmatic as to simply shamelessly use us. Of course, they love us very much and try to express their emotional attachment with the means available to them. A cat always seeks protection and tenderness from her beloved mistress, and when she feels a special state of a woman, she begins to show increased attention to her. It is no coincidence that such behavior is much more often manifested not in cats, but in cats. And on the net you can find a huge amount of evidence about how cats relieve the tone of the uterus, calm the buzzers that were buzzing in the stomach, relieve the emotional stress of hoyaks, positively affect blood pressure and more.

But be aware of the real dangers. which close contact with a pregnant cat can bring.

          1. Cats are carriers of infectious diseases and worms. And if the issue of toxoplasmosis, which instills horror in pregnant women, is resolved quickly enough and for the entire pregnancy by passing widely available tests for both the cat and the hostess herself, then the issue with parasites is not resolved “forever” even by regular preventive “runs” or banning the cat from walking on the street. But cats can also carry other dangerous diseases – for example, bartonellosis, “cat scratch disease”.

          2. An allergy to feline components may develop during pregnancy. If the expectant mother, when a cat is sleeping on her stomach, sneezes and coughs, puffiness and rashes form, then this situation is really dangerous for the child, and you will have to find a new good home for your pet.

          3. You can not abruptly drive the cat off the stomach. It is worth remembering that a cat can be frightened by a scream or sudden movements, and release claws into the stomach. to hold on. Actually, sudden movements and screams are generally undesirable for a pregnant woman.

            4. Some cats, sensing the owner’s pregnancy, may behave aggressively, throwing themselves on the stomach, scratching it and even biting it. In this case, it is better for a woman to pay extra attention to herself and her unborn child: not always, but sometimes, the fetus has serious developmental pathologies that the animal feels. Precautions: Wash your hands before eating and after interacting with and caring for cats. Carry out cat litter with gloves. Get vaccinated regularly. Treat cats with flea products regularly. Do not let the cat lick open wounds, your face, dishes. If scratching, drooling occurs, immediately rinse the wound under running water. If signs of inflammation, suppuration, enlargement and soreness of the lymph nodes appear at the site of the bite, scratching, seek medical help. Try to keep cats indoors, exclude the possibility of contact with street animals. Do not let your cat come into contact with rodents. Don’t let cats drink water from puddles. Persons with immunodeficiency states are advised to refuse to communicate with cats.

My Child attended this Preschool from the age of 2-4. I was pleased with how the teachers were so professional and loving. They really did teach my Becky a lot about respecting other children space and independence. I would recommend this Preschool to anyone.

One of the great Romanian confessors, Archimandrite Iakinfu, owns the phrase: “The path to the Kingdom of Heaven runs along the edge of a knife.

She comprehensively describes the monasticism of the inhabitants of St. Catherine’s Monastery.

How to get to the monastery

The place can be reached by public transport:

    • from Paveletsky railway station to Rastorguevo station, after that you need to take a bus (No. 2, 359, 59) and get off at the Police School;
    • from Domodedovskaya (metro) by bus No. 364 or 471 to Rastorguevo station; then – by bus number 2, 59or 379 to the stop School of Police.

    1 History

    1.1 Foundation of the monastery

The monastery appeared not by chance. Once, the sovereign Alexei Mikhailovich once again went hunting in the lands near Moscow (Yermolinsky Groves). During this period he prayed a lot. Once at night, the martyr Catherine appeared before him in a dream. At the same time, the tent seemed to be lit up with an unearthly radiance. The saint appeared in the guise of a girl of unprecedented beauty. She was wearing a white robe.

In Russia, the veneration of St. Catherine has been known since antiquity. In the 15th century, particles of the relics of the saint were transferred to Moscow, who was especially revered in the family of the Moscow Grand Dukes, since she was the heavenly patroness of the mother of Sophia Paleolog, the wife of Ivan III. The outburst of veneration of St. Catherine in Russia fell on the second half of the 17th century and was associated with the birth of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich’s daughter Catherine.

She reassured the king, telling him not to be afraid of her. After all, she brought him joyful news: God gave him a daughter.

After waking up, the king told his companions about the dream and ordered them to return to the capital. A messenger rushed towards them to please the king with the same news that the martyr had told him.

Then the sovereign decided to create a monastery where the saint appeared to him, and named his daughter in her honor. It happened November 24, 1658

    1.2 XVII-XVIII centuries

Initially, the building was built of wood, but already in the spring of 1664, Alexei Mikhailovich ordered it to be dismantled and buildings made of stone built here. The first was for parish ministers, and the second was for helping the elderly.

Russian Tsar (since 1645) Alexei Mikhailovich (Quiet) from the Romanov dynasty (1629-1676)

The Moscow clerk Merchukov was responsible for the work. After 3 years, we started interior decoration.

    Interesting fact

In 1679 the stone church was completed. On October 11, she was consecrated.

In the 18th century the monastery was revived under the leadership of the Metropolitan of Moscow Platon, and then – Hieromonk Melchizedek.

1.3 XIX – early XX century

In 1812 the monastery was almost not damaged. The French soldiers who broke into its territory fired several shots at the bells.

In the initial stage of the First World War, the desert was under the leadership of the abbot Panteleimon. Political problems and clashes in St. Petersburg and Moscow did not affect the work of the monastery.

    1.

    4 Soviet period

With the beginning of the German offensive, many monks were forced to leave the cloisters and become refugees. They wandered around apartments, barracks, rooming houses, parochial schools. Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fedorovna gave the forced wanderers and the monastery shelter a new House of Cheap Apartments in Moscow.

In the winter of 1915, the staff of the Krasnostok Convent arrived in the city from Grodno. The sisters were sent to the Alexandria Palace on the territory of the Neskuchny Garden, and a few years later they settled in the Catherine’s Convent.

90,002 monks who did not leave the monastery were sent in 1918 to a number of monastic complexes near Moscow.

164 nuns became residents of the Catherine’s Convent. After the fall of the tsarist regime, it was closed. According to the new law, the monastery acquired the status of a labor artel. However, the temple still operated on its territory – like an ordinary parish church.

    Life

At first, life there was incredibly hard. The nuns had to endure times of famine and cold. However, they did not give up. These steadfast Christian women had to plow the ground, uproot stumps, and saw down trees.

Their labors were not fruitless. The economy in the monastery reached such a level that its workers supplied all the nearby villages with food, and those of them who had medical experience also treated sick residents.

The authorities forbade walking with a miraculous image on the outskirts. But on the other hand, night services became available to the villagers, at which Easter and Christmas were celebrated. People even came with their babies. Fairs were also held on Peter’s Day.

But, despite all the benefits brought by the monastery to society, some atheists mocked the priests and sisters in Christ. In addition, the Soviet authorities constantly sent new decrees that ran counter to Christian life.

    Interesting fact

In 1931, an order came from the capital to leave all the buildings of the monastery for a day. The situation of the nuns was aggravated by the fact that they could not return to their relatives. In 1922, their hometown of Krasnostok was already part of Poland and – accordingly – the possessions of the Catholic Church.

As soon as the monastery was completely closed, Mother Superior Elena was taken into custody. She and several other arrested nuns were taken to Kazakhstan. Someone died without leaving the place of detention. In 1934 the abbess returned and was sent to Maloyaroslavets (Kaluga region). The nuns took care of her needs, and she remained their spiritual guide until her death in 1937.

After that, a hunt began for the most active Christians in the city. For example, father Zosima (Trubachev) , who buried abbess Elena, was arrested and shot near the capital.

    Gate Church

But even after that, for four more years, the gate church operated on the land of the monastery.

The buildings of the monastery were given over to a place of detention, which for the most part kept people arrested for minor crimes, such as petty theft or begging.

The Peter and Paul Church was given over to a club, where performances of artists and concerts were held in the evenings, and court hearings were held here during the day. T also a colony for juvenile delinquents appeared on the territory of the monastery.

After the church was closed, the icons were taken to the nearby village of Ermolino. The servants of God were again subjected to arrests and mass executions.

    Interesting fact

In 1935, the lands located near the estate of Sukhanov, which included the hermitage of St. Catherine, were declared reserved.

At the end of 1938, on the initiative of NI Yezhov , a prison for political prisoners was set up in the desert. Since the Sukhanovo estate was located nearby, they began to call it Sukhanovskaya. The public was not informed of its existence. Two years later, Yezhov himself became one of its victims. His position passed to Beria.

In official documents this place was listed as a dacha of the NKVD. Those who were kept here called it a summer house of torture.

    Among the prisoners were:
    • political and public figures;
    • writers, poets and other cultural figures;
    • army officers up to admirals and generals;
    • students and even pregnant women.

Here are just a few of the outstanding people who went through the horrors of this prison: writer I Sahak Babel, writer Sergei Efron, director Vsevolod Meyerhold and others.

    Interesting fact

52 types of torture were used in Sukhanovskaya prison. It was considered the most terrible of all places of detention in the USSR.

Subsequently, the department of the Central Internal Affairs Directorate was located there.

    1.5 Restoration of the monastery

In 1992, the procedure for transferring the monastery to the Russian Orthodox Church was launched. In the spring, finally, the long-awaited prayer was said in the sacred building. Hieromonk Tikhon was appointed rector.

The first monks lived in the temple dome. In early 1993, they equipped the cells, after which they began to repair the abbot’s chambers. By the beginning of winter, the number of novices increased by 5 people.

In 1994, the building of one of the educational institutions of the Central Internal Affairs Directorate was removed from the territory. The monastery began to flourish, not without the help of benefactors. In August, work began on the construction of a refectory and a church in honor of St. Tikhon.

In the middle of 1995, the Training Center of the Central Internal Affairs Directorate completely left the monastic lands. In winter, a Christmas spiritual concert was organized. In the future, work on the restoration of the buildings of the monastery continued.

    Monastery Museum

Nowadays, only the museum created by the novice Victor, an artist by education, reminds of the Sukhanovskaya prison.

Such museums – dedicated to the history of the Gulag – are rare.

One cell allocated for the institution. Lay people don’t come here often.

There are very few exhibits here:
    • photographs of prisoners;
    • parquet from the personal office of Lavrenty Beria;
    • aluminum bowls from which the prisoners ate;
    • telephone, through which orders for executions were transmitted;
    • revolver, from which they were performed;
    • paintings by novice Victor on a prison theme;
    • wax figure of Beria.

    Architecture

In the center of the monastery is St. Catherine’s Church – an example of classicism. Signs of style are porticoes with columns and a large porch. The walls are decorated with icons made in a mosaic style. The church has five additional altars.

On the territory of the complex there is also a tomb, farmsteads, buildings for bishops and brothers and the following churches:

    • St. Chief Apostles Peter and Paul. On the ceiling, murals from the century before last have survived;
    • Moscow Patriarch Tikhon;
    • Dimitry of Rostov;
    • John the Warrior (this building is wooden).

    Interesting facts

In Stalin’s times, in the dungeons of the Sukhanovskaya prison, without a court verdict, people were kept and tortured for years, whom the then authorities considered dangerous for their regime. Between 1938 to 1952 about 35,000 people have been here. The vast majority of them died.

On the territory of the monastery you can find a burning bush and a healing spring. In 2010, when the relics of St. Catherine were brought, pink-purple flowers appeared on the bush, which were not there either before or after this event.

    Shrines

The monastery houses many shrines. Including arks with particles of the relics of St. Catherine and Seraphim of Sarov, the relics of the elders of the Optina monastery.

    Relics of St. Catherine

    There are also revered icons:

    • Nicholas the Wonderworker.
    • St. Spyridon Trimifuntsky.
    • Saint Innocent.

    From 16:00 – evening service.

On the last day of the week, the service is conducted differently:

    • from 8:00 a.m. — prayer service for the blessing of water;
    • from 9:00 – liturgy;
    • from 16:00 – prayers with an akathist directed to St. Catherine.

    Reviews

Internet users are enthusiastic about visiting the famous monastery.

So, Ekaterina Savina wrote that she really liked the monastery. Despite the fact that the decoration has been updated, there is no feeling at all that this is a new building.

Elena Belova admired the skill of those masters who created the splendor of the monastery. She noted that peace is felt on its territory.

User with the nickname Shelma paid tribute to the well-groomed and beautiful territory of the monastery. She was fascinated by the inner beauty of the temple, its choir and belfry.

Vera Stepanova noted that when visiting the monastery she felt the silence of the soul and spirit. And at the time when one of the monks was talking about the monastery, she “smoothed her soul.”

The history of St. Catherine’s Monastery is striking to the core. The monastery, created for the glory of the God of love, was turned by atheists into the most terrible place in Russia, where evil, violence and impunity triumphed!

At that terrible time, not only faith was destroyed, but also human godlikeness. Rejecting the fear of the Lord, the atheists destroyed temples and monasteries or used them for unspiritual and even impious purposes.

But the militant atheists did not celebrate the victory for long. Their hatred could not destroy the faith and love for Christ in the hearts of his true disciples.

The history of St. Catherine’s Monastery is similar to the history of our world. Created by order of a grateful king, he suffered humiliation, but was recreated and regained his former spiritual and visible splendor. This inspires confidence that our world, defiled by sin, will be healed and restored at the return of our Savior.

December 7 – name day of Yekaterinburg. History of the Grado-Ekaterinburg Catherine’s Mining Cathedral

December 7 is the feast day of St. Catherine the Great Martyr. The temple in her honor – Catherine’s Mountain Cathedral (Cathedral in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine) – the first Orthodox church built in Yekaterinburg in 1723. It stood in the center of the city, on the left elevated bank of the Iset River, to the east of the Cathedral, on Catherine’s Square (now Labor Square).

    Ekaterininsky Mountain Cathedral

More than a hundred years ago there were about 20 churches in Yekaterinburg, but a special place among them was occupied by the “Grado-Ekaterinburg Ekaterininsky Mountain Cathedral”. It was located at the intersection of Main Avenue and Pushkinskaya Street. The people of Yekaterinburg have always considered the Catherine Church to be the main one. It was erected by the first builders of the factory-fortress and for more than 20 years remained the only temple of the new city. One of the prominent modern specialists in the history of Yekaterinburg, N.S. Korepanov, in his article, noting the exceptional role of the Catherine Cathedral, wrote: “The Church of St. Catherine in all historical eras remained perhaps the most important symbol of Yekaterinburg. According to his state or in relation to him in society (regardless of his physical presence), it was always possible to indirectly judge the spiritual state of society itself. An integral part of the idea of the founders of the first industrial city in Russia about the exemplary “capital” of the region of mining plants was the construction of the main temple of the factory department. Therefore, the very specific history of the construction, reconstruction, destruction, and possibly the restoration of the Catherine’s Church is also the development of the embodied “internal idea” of Yekaterinburg.

At the beginning of 1723, on the banks of the Iset River, Wilhelm de Gennin began the construction of a fortified plant for processing copper and iron ore. According to the imperial decree, “the new fortress, which was built in the Ugrian province near the Iset River, and in it factories with various factories and manufactories, was named in the name of Yekaterinburg, for the memory of eternal childbirth and for the eternal glory of Her Majesty, the Most Gracious Empress Empress.” However, almost two months before the imperial decree, on October 1, 1723, on the left bank of the Iset, not far from the dam, the priest of the Tobolsk regiment Ivan Efimov consecrated the laying of the first church of the plant under construction in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine. “In general, every plant was considered built when it began to operate. When the chest windows were unlocked in the dam, and water flowed through the chests onto the wheels, and war hammers began to beat. It was clear to everyone that, for political reasons, such an event in Yekaterinburg should be timed precisely to the day of St. Catherine – November 24th. On October 1, regimental priest Ivan Efimov consecrated the foundation stone of Catherine’s Church. On November 7, the hammers were launched. Just for two days: the blast furnace was still under construction, there was no metal of its own, there was nothing to forge … On St. Catherine’s Day – on the name day of the newborn city – a cannon fired with a blank charge, the soldiers of the Tobolsk regiment with swollen joints and torn veins roared and sobbed “Hurrah” and drank wine at public expense.

From that time on, Saint Catherine the Great Martyr became the heavenly patroness of the fortified plant, and the day of her remembrance, December 7 (November 24, according to the old style), was one of the main holidays of the city, to which the most important events were timed.

The First Catherine’s Church was wooden and dilapidated already 4 years after the consecration, and since 1730 it has already undergone almost an annual serious repair.

The decision to build a stone church in Yekaterinburg was taken by the Senate on July 5, 1732 in response to the proposal of V. de Gennin (after removal in 1729d. a ban on urban stone construction in connection with the mobilization of forces and means for St. Petersburg)). In 1743, the architect Johann Werner Müller even received an order to design the building of a new stone church, and in 1746 an estimate for its construction was drawn up and sent to the Berg Collegium, however, for various reasons, the construction itself was postponed.

On September 26, 1747, the hut church was destroyed by fire, which of course moved the construction of the stone church off the ground. Finally, in the second half of the 18th century, according to the project of the talented Yekaterinburg draftsman A. Kichigin (the building designed by Muller could no longer accommodate everyone, since the city was developing dynamically and its population was growing), a magnificent stone cathedral in the name of St. Catherine was built, which was the main symbol of the city until the 30s. XX century. The church bell tower also performed a secular function: it had a clock with chimes so that the working people could navigate in time.

In 1761, a decision was made to create a chapel under the bell tower in honor of the newly canonized saint, Saint Demetrius of Rostov. In 1834, the chapel of Demetrius of Rostov was rebuilt, expanded and in June consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity.

In the summer-autumn (July 22 and September 23), 1763, Archpriest Theodore Kochnev, with the blessing of Metropolitan Pavel of Tobolsk and Siberia, consecrated the northern (in the name of the First Martyr Archdeacon Stephen) and southern (in the name of the Apostle John the Theologian) limits. The consecration of the main limit by a crowded gathering of people took place on September 22, 1768. The solemn service was officiated by Archpriest Theodore Kochnev, then head of the Ekaterinburg Spiritual Administration.

Starting from the first half of the 19th century, the mountain cathedral was repeatedly rebuilt and lost its original appearance (the need for changes was dictated by the active life of the parish). During the reconstruction carried out by the famous architect M. P. Malakhov, the side aisles were extended towards the bell tower and built up to two floors. Thus, the outbuildings went beyond the original line of the facade, new wide stairs to the second floor were built inside them. Due to the rebuilding, the temple lost its original harmony, its facade became a little bulky and no longer harmonized with the thin spire of the bell tower. In addition, classicist porticos, beloved by Malakhov, were added to the building, which also partly violated the unity of his style.

The main shrine of the temple was a part of the relics of the holy righteous Simeon of Verkhoturye. Therefore, the days of memory of the righteous Simeon gathered here a huge number of worshipers.

Catherine’s Church was considered, as it were, “departmental” for all mountain employees (which was also recorded in the name of the cathedral “mountain”), as it was in it that mining engineers took the oath. And since the XIX century – at the request of the military authorities – and recruits. Behind the right kliros of the main temple was kept the banner granted by Emperor Alexander II to the Ural mining battalion on January 1, 1861 in connection with its centenary. Obviously, this battalion originates from the 10th Yekaterinburg mining company. Its core was made up of “hereditary” soldiers, and some of them were the grandchildren of the first builders of the city – the soldiers of the Tobolsk regiment. And, of course, many factory workers and residents of the city came here to the Catherine’s Church on Sundays and holidays. Ekaterinburg merchants, gold miners, prominent public figures and ordinary people actively participated in the parish life of the church. So, in the 80s – early 9In the 0s of the 19th century, many famous Yekaterinburg residents baptized their children in the Catherine’s Cathedral, for example, mining engineer A. A. Iossa, official of the Yekaterinburg District Court D. M. Pavlinov, hereditary nobleman S. I. Hertz, merchants V. P. Zlokazov and P. A. Podvintsev. At the same time, in church documents there are requests for issuance of certificates from parish registers and from former soldiers of the Yekaterinburg Mining Battalion and ordinary city dwellers.

Many famous people in the city got married in the Catherine’s Cathedral. So, in 1872, British citizen mechanical engineer John Thomas Wilkinson and the daughter of the collegiate secretary, D.F. Ponomarev, were married, in 1875 – the collegiate secretary P.M. Vologodsky and the daughter of the state councilor, A.I. Neiberg, in 1880 – Ekaterinburg district doctor V. S. Buinitsky and daughter of a real state councilor, E. I. Ivanova, in 1884 – nobleman A. P. Lodyzhensky and daughter of a paramedic, A. N. Kataeva, in 1886 – doctor V. A. Paduchev and the daughter of a hereditary honorary citizen, A.I. Balandin.

At the end of the 19th — beginning of the 20th century, Collegiate Councilor V.M. Malakhov (son of a famous Ural architect), State Councilors A.I. Krasnopevtsev and A.F. Chubarkov, brother of the owner of the famous “Sevastyanovsky” house, titular councilor, were buried in the cathedral A. I. Sevastyanov, head of the women’s gymnasium E. I. Cook, merchants A. A. Korobeinikov and P. A. Podvintsev, Ekaterinburg firemaster A. I. Petrov.

For the parish cemetery of the Catherine’s Cathedral, a place was allocated to the left of the Tobolsk road behind the Olkhovka river, but there were burials near the cathedral. Photographs from the early 20th century show two tombstones near the north wall of the church. In 1774, a member of the Yekaterinburg Mining Chancellery, assessor Mikhail Ivanovich Bashmakov, who took an active part in the fight against the Pugachev uprising in the Trans-Urals, was buried here. Another burial, surrounded by a cast-iron grate, belonged to Archimandrite of the Hilandar Slavic-Serbian Svyatogorsk Athos Lavra Sofroniy, who died on February 7, 1863. The epitaph placed on the marble plaque of his grave read:

“He knew how to subdue all passions

    And shunned fuss

He began to live as a recluse

    And died as a wanderer.

A noticeable trace in the history of culture and education of the city was left by the clergy of Catherine’s Cathedral. Many were educated people of their time and left a wonderful mark, not only in the life of the cathedral, but also in the life of the city, in particular in the activities of the famous Ural Society of Natural Science Lovers (UOLE), which formed the basis of the modern museum of local lore. The parish also carried out social service to the best of its ability, so the funeral of the dead in the Ryazanov hospital for the poor was assigned to the Catherine’s Church.

The schools that functioned at the cathedral at different times were of great importance for urban education. From about 1824 until the middle of the 19th century, a two-year parish school functioned at the Catherine’s Cathedral, which was the first stage of the system of spiritual education, preparing for study at the district religious school.

In 1887, a men’s parochial school was opened at the temple, in which up to 60 boys studied, and in 1894 a women’s school for 65 girls. Total at 19In 08 the school had 174 students. Church education in pre-revolutionary Russia not only provided knowledge on the Law of God, but on a whole range of secular disciplines, taught to count, read, write, giving primary education to a wide circle of citizens.

The parish library played a certain role in the educational environment of the city. According to the inventory of 1920, it contained 1237 books.

In 1894 Catherine’s parish guardianship was established. The main task of the guardianship was to support the development of school education, including through the appointment of an annual allowance to increase teachers’ salaries.

At the beginning of the 20th century, women began to create their own parish public organizations, which were called “sister brotherhoods” or “sisterhoods”. A similar organization was created in Catherine’s parish. Unfortunately, only one mention of her has survived – this is the inscription on the icon of St. Catherine, donated to the Catherine Cathedral on October 1 (14), 1923 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the temple. The gift was made from the church-religious community, the council (i.e., the leadership of the community) and the sisterhood (i.e., the Catherine Sisterhood continued to exist in the early years of Soviet power). Apparently, in terms of its functions, it partially replaced guardianship, which ceased to operate with the outbreak of the civil war.

To get an idea of the range of activities of the Catherine Sisterhood, you can refer to the charter of the Exaltation of the Cross Sisterhood. Such organizations united pious women at least 18 years old. Their goals were to maintain the cleanliness and splendor of their parish church, help the poor, bury the homeless poor and “good influence on the parish through personal example, word and free distribution among the people of leaflets and brochures of religious and moral content.” As a rule, parish priests led the sisterhoods. Prior to the beginning of the activities of the zemstvos (70s of the XIX century), parish churches were almost the only educational centers for the dissemination of elementary medical knowledge. And this was the case not only in rural areas, but also in factory towns and cities.

Now, it is even hard to imagine that in Yekaterinburg in the late 70s of the 19th century, women did not want to resort to the services of the city maternity hospital, which was founded by Dr. zemstvos. And here the doctors were counting on the educational assistance of the clergy of the Catherine’s Cathedral, referring to the fact that they know more than anyone else, they need the population.

After the revolution, the cathedral shared the fate of Russian society and the Church. The outbreak of activity of parishioners in the early 20s of the 20th century was first suppressed by the rigidity of Soviet legislation, the unceremonious seizure of church valuables (allegedly for the starving), under pressure from the Soviet authorities, the church was transferred by the inspired OGPU to the “renovationist schism”. Humiliated, but not broken, the temple continued to operate. However, he could not survive the Soviet cultural revolution as part of Russian society, Russian culture and science.

In 1930, during an active anti-religious campaign, the Cathedral of St. Catherine the Great Martyr was demolished, making room for the building of the Ural Regional Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks and the Stone Flower fountain (it was opened in September 1960 (architect Petr Dmitrievich Demintsev), which, together with a small square is still located on the site of the majestic building of the cathedral. At the same time, the oldest square in Yekaterinburg in its left-bank part, formerly called Church, Cathedral, Ekaterininsky, became known as Labor Square.0003

In the very center of the square there was a fountain in the form of jets of water spouting from concrete. In September 1962, the Stone Flower fountain appeared (architect Petr Dmitrievich Demintsev). The round pool is decorated with high quality marble. The flower itself, cast from iron in the city of Kamensk-Uralsky, has eight massive petals. Wheat ears rose above. And at the very top – the core of the flower, giving birth to a tight stream of water. The pedestal was made at the Siberian stone quarry.

Chapel of St. Catherine the Great Martyr

A new period in the history of our Church began during the perestroika period. A landmark event was the year of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia. The persecution of the faith gradually ceased, now Orthodox people could freely declare their religious feelings. And first of all, they tried to restore the memory of the desecrated shrines of the city. There was a proposal to erect a cross on the site of the once majestic Catherine’s Cathedral. However, it was necessary to clarify its location. The architect A.V. Dolgov undertook to help the believers in this matter, who, on the basis of archival research, was able to accurately determine the place of the temple, in particular the altar, on the site of which they planned to install a worship cross. The fact is that after the destruction of the temple, the landscape was changed, part of the elevation was moved by bulldozers, so the foundation of the temple was practically not preserved. So, in as early as August 1991 years on the site of the main altar of the Catherine’s Cathedral, a worship cross was installed. One of the initiators of the installation of the cross was the People’s Artist of Russia Tamara Nikitichna Voronina. It was installed by Anatoly Mikhailovich Verkhovsky.

In the mid-1990s, believing residents of the city did not forget the holy place, and tried to read weekly akathists to the holy great martyr at the worship cross. Hope that a temple, or at least a chapel, will be erected on this site. In preparation for the celebration of the 275th anniversary of the city, the question of the church of St. Catherine again arose.

In 1997, the head of the city of Yekaterinburg signed a decree on the construction of an Orthodox chapel in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine on the site of the Catherine’s Cathedral. The construction was initiated by a group of believers, Bishop Nikon of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye blessed the good undertaking, and the public charitable foundation Institute of History and Archeology undertook to finance the construction. The work was carried out according to the design documentation agreed with the Main Department of Architecture and approved by the town planning council. The main work was completed at 1998 – to the 275th anniversary of the city.

The well-known Yekaterinburg architect Alexander Dolgov became the author of the project for the construction of a stone chapel with five domes. It was he who at one time supported the initiative to install a worship cross on the site of the altar of the Catherine’s Church and helped to accurately determine the location of the cathedral. The construction of the chapel had to be completed as soon as possible, in the conditions of the outbreak of the 1998 crisis. Therefore, the project was not fully implemented, all the planned mosaics were not completed on the outside, and the interior decoration conceived by A. V. Dolgov was not implemented at all. The chapel is located not on the site of the main altar, but to the right of it on the site of the altar of the southern limit in the name of the Apostle John the Theologian.

Together with the chapel, on August 14, 1998, a monument to the founding fathers of the city V. N. Tatishchev and V. I. de Genin (architect P. Chusovitin) was erected on Labor Square.

For many citizens and guests of the capital of the Urals, the chapel has become a favorite place of prayer. Especially believers revere the image of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, painted specifically for the chapel in the late 1990s. Based on the stories of miraculous events that took place through prayers to the patron saint of our city, a book has been written that has already gone through two editions (the second, corrected and significantly expanded). For many years, people brought butts to icons, and in 2015, the venerated image was decorated with a gilded basma, halos and a cross, and placed in a new beautiful kiot adorned with a silver stretcher.

From 1998-2011, prayers with an akathist to the patron saint of the city were regularly performed in the chapel of St. Catherine. Since 2011, a small group of parishioners of the Church of the Great Martyr Panteleimon began to gather in the chapel every Sunday at 19:00 for a prayer service with an akathist to St. Catherine the Great Martyr. Gradually, more and more people came to the Akathist, united by the desire to pray to the patron saint of the city. Over time, a friendly initiative group of parishioners was formed, which later became the core of the future parish of the Cathedral of the Great Martyr Catherine in Yekaterinburg.

On December 24, 2012, Metropolitan Kirill of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye blessed the creation of the parish. Gradually, the need for the advent of liturgical life began to be realized. On April 20, 2014, on the day of the Lord’s Pascha, the first Divine Liturgy in many years took place in the chapel of St. Catherine. Since then, it has been performed in the temple weekly. In 2015, a wooden iconostasis was installed, decorated with images of the Savior and the Virgin.

Thus, we see that Catherine’s Cathedral, having lost its walls, still lives. He lives not only in the form of a small chapel on Labor Square, which has become a home for its parishioners, lives in the hearts of those who honor the memory of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, lives in active controversy over its restoration. It connects us, modern residents of Yekaterinburg, with our ancestors, who created and built this city under the protection of St. Catherine.

In October 2019, in Yekaterinburg, for the first time in Russia, a survey of citizens was conducted to choose a site for the construction of the Church of St. Catherine, in which almost 100,000 people took part. The majority of Yekaterinburg residents voted for a site in the historical center of the city, at 17 Gorky Street. Catherine, possessing rare beauty and intelligence, brilliantly educated, confessed her faith in the One True God before the persecuting emperor of Christians, speaking out against sacrifices and the veneration of idols. The wise virgin exposed the errors of the pagans and convinced the 50 most learned men of the empire of the correctness of the Christian teaching. Neither persuasion and exhortation, nor torture, nor the threat of death forced her to renounce the truth. Saint Catherine firmly confessed her fidelity to her Heavenly Bridegroom, Christ, giving her earthly life for Him.

Saint Catherine, who is the patroness of sciences, knowledge and learning, crafts and mining, brides, is a very revered Christian saint in the world. Her Christian feat is sung in prayers, poems and songs. Her marvelous image is captured not only on icons, but also in the paintings of outstanding artists of the Renaissance. School Boundaries & Assignments | IUSD.org

In order to accommodate IUSD students, each residential area is assigned to a particular school at each grade level. An assigned school serves all students from its assigned attendance area who wish to enroll there.  Intradistrict/School Choice, where seats are available, and Alternative Schools provide choices for students who wish to enroll in a school other than their assigned neighborhood school.

In some instances, assigned residential schools become impacted by enrollment.  Due to unavailable seats, a student may be requested to enroll in a school other than their assigned neighborhood school. In such cases, students have the right of continued enrollment at their new assigned school and it is treated as their neighborhood school. If there is an interest to return to their assigned neighborhood school when space becomes available, the principal of the neighborhood school should be contacted no later than noon on the fourth Friday in February.

Please note that Culverdale and Westpark share a “Super Attendance” area, meaning both are considered that area’s neighborhood schools. With that said, if Westpark becomes full in a grade level, Culverdale will be considered your neighborhood school, and vice versa.

      Attendance Boundary Changes

The Board may consider changes to School Attendance Area Boundaries.

Changes are held to a minimum, but are prompted by such factors as:

      • Declining enrollment in a given section of the district

      • New housing development in a given section of the district

      • Changes in capacity at a given school

      • Movement of special programs from one school to another

      • Alignment of elementary, middle, and high school areas

      • Home-to-school transportation distances

The following communication is being sent to all families of students in grades 7 and 8 at Edgewood Middle and students in grade 9 at Edgewood High Schools on November 17, 2022 at 5:00 p. m.:

Amazon recently contacted Edgewood Middle School regarding the pencil pouches that were purchased and distributed to students at Edgewood Middle School who were in 6, 7, and 8 grade last year, the 2021-2022 school year. The following communication was received from Amazon:

We have learned of a potential safety issue that may impact your Amazon purchase. A U.S. Regulatory Agency and/or our Product Safety Team has provided us information that indicates that the product may exceed the federal limits for lead and/or cadmium or contains a defect that presents a substantial product hazard under CPSA Section 15(a)(1) or (2).

If you still have this product, we urge you to stop using it immediately and dispose of the item.
If you purchased this item for someone else, please notify the recipient immediately and let them know they should dispose of the item. There is no need for you to return the product.

Harford County Public Schools is requesting any student that may still be using the pencil pouches distributed last year, dispose of the pencil pouch immediately. Please note, students in 6, 7, and 8 grade this year received a new pencil pouch that has not been affected by this recall.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission at 800-638-2772.

It is very important that we receive the completed form from you, as this is a means of funding that will impact your child’s school system. Persons working on federal property, please be sure to complete the box indicating the specific location of your employment. The forms should be returned to school with your child no later than Friday, November 11, 2022. COMING SOON! Meal Account Balance Notifications

The following message will be sent via phone, email, and text message to all parents and guardians at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022:

Maryland legislation now requires notification of parent/guardians when a student meal account balance becomes low.

This is to notify you that parents and guardians will soon begin to receive monthly automated communications via phone and email when your student’s meal account reaches $2.60. Notification at this amount will ensure you’re aware you have funds remaining for approximately one meal.

Students without funds on their account will still receive a meal that is charged to their account but will not be able to purchase any snack items, even with cash. Consequently, families with a balance LESS THAN $0 will receive a weekly call notifying that your account balance needs to be paid.

We encourage families to login to your MySchoolBucks account and set your own balance reminders above $2.60 to avoid receiving the monthly or weekly notices. Please note, if you opt out of the balance alerts when they begin, you will be opting yourself out of receiving all HCPS outreach communications.

Federal waivers allowing universally free school meals ended June 30, 2022 – students who do not qualify for meal benefits or whose applications for meal benefits from previous years expired must pay $2. 50 for lunch in elementary schools or $2.60 for lunch in secondary schools. The online meal benefit application is available at www.hcpsmenus.com.

If you are unsure of your MySchoolBucks account or balance information, contact Food and Nutrition Services at 410-638-4078 for assistance.
