Tennessee is home to 21 species of frogs and toads.
What is the difference between a frog and toad? In general:
Frogs have smooth moist skin, can jump very well, and usually are found close to a water source even as adults.
Toads have dry warty skin, make short hops, and may be found far from water as adults. However, technically toads are frogs! Frogs and toads belong to the group of animals known as amphibians.

Amphibians
Amphibians are the class of vertebrate animals containing the Anura (frogs and toads), Urodeles or Caudata (salamanders and sirens), and the lesser known Gymnophiona (caecilians) which do not occur in North America.
Amphibians are ectothermic (cold-blooded), have smooth porous skin, primarily fertilize their eggs externally and do not have a hard shell or membrane around the eggs.
The word amphibian comes from the Greek language and means “dual life.” This refers to the lifestyle practiced by many amphibians. The adults are primarily terrestrial (land-dwelling) and the larva (tadpoles) are mainly aquatic (live in water).
Male frogs gather at the breeding pools and begin to vocalize (call) to attract females. Females arrive at the breeding sites and seek out the most attractive males. Those males with the deepest voices and the longest calls attract the most females.
Larger frogs have deeper voices and those frogs that are the largest and have the longest calls are the most fit. A male grasps a female from behind and grips her behind her front legs and hangs on until mating is completed (amplexus). During amplexus, the female expels her eggs and the male releases sperm into the water to fertilize them. This type of fertilization is called external fertilization.
The eggs are laid in jelly-like masses in groups of a few to as many as several hundred depending upon the species. The egg cells of each embryo begin to divide into more cells (egg cell cleavage) and grow to form the tadpole. The eggs hatch within a few days.
Tadpoles remain in the water a few weeks for most species, and up to 2 years for other species, before they metamorphose. Metamorphosis is the process in which a tadpole changes into a frog.
Population Information
Natural extinctions and population fluctuations are a normal part of nature. Scientists have uncovered five mass extinctions throughout the history of earth. But the accelerated rate at which many species are now declining and disappearing is very alarming to the scientific community. It is believed we are now in the sixth mass extinction event; the first ever caused by the actions of a single species, humankind. During the past couple decades, scientists have become concerned that many of our amphibian populations are declining and some species have become extinct in areas of the world that are relatively undisturbed by man. Below are but a few examples of the many declines and extinctions of the past two decades:
The golden toad (Bufo periglenes) was first discovered in the remote and pristine cloud forests of the Monteverde Preserve of Costa Rica in 1967. This toad was very unusual because it was sexually dimorphic (the sexes could easily be identified.) The last golden toad ever seen was in 1987 and they have now been declared extinct.
The northern gastric brooding frog (Rheobatrachus vitellinus) of Australia was discovered in 1984 and last seen in the wild in 1985 following the fate of the closely related gastric brooding frog (Rheobatrachus silus) that was discovered in Australia in 1973 and had disappeared by 1981. These unusual frogs brooded their young in their stomachs and were of interest to the scientific and medical community as they ceased [Chiricahua leopard frog] producing hydrochloric acid in the stomach when they were brooding young frogs.
In the United States, populations of the western toad (Bufo boreas) and Chiricahua leopard frog (Rana chiricahuensis) have plummeted by 80%, the mountain yellow-legged frog (Rana mucosa) has disappeared from much of its range, and recent surveys to find the Yosemite toad (Bufo canoris) in Yosemite National Park were fruitless. Two species, the relic leopard frog (Rana onca) and the Wyoming toad (Bufo baxteri) are on the brink of becoming extinct in the wild and the Vegas Valley leopard frog (Rana fisheri), last seen in 1942, is now extinct.
Population declines and extinctions are not the only problems facing amphibians today. Scientists have noted an increase in reports of malformations. Scientists believe there are three main factors contributing to the increase in malformations: increases in UV-B radiation because of the thinning ozone layer, chemical pollution (insecticides and pesticides), and parasites (chytrid fungus). These factors combined with a weakened immune system due to environmental stressors, can increase the number of malformations found in a population. Malformations come in many forms ranging from missing limbs, bones and eyes, to extra limbs, digits and eyes. Few, if any, of these malformed amphibians survive to reproduce. Tennessee does not appear to have an abnormal number of malformations, but we need to be watchful. For more information about malformations, including state maps showing reported malformations, visit the North American Reporting Center for Amphibian Malformations.
Amphibians, including the frogs and toads, around for over 360 million years, survived the mass extinction event that killed the dinosaurs. Below is relative time scale showing geologic history and when the amphibians first appeared.
Some Identified Causes of Amphibian Declines Around the World
Increased UV radiation due to ozone depletion (montane species which breed in open water are most at risk.)
Chemical pollution (including fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides and herbicides.)
Climate change, both temporary and long term (temporary changes include, drought and flood; long term changes include changes in wind patterns, rain patterns and especially global warming.)
Disease (chytrid fungus has been implicated in the decline of many species.)
Increased predation (cats, coyotes and some introduced species are major predators of tadpoles, frogs and other wildlife. )
Introduction of exotic species, including plants (native species often lose out when having to compete with exotic species, and native plants can use up resources, like water, that are needed by amphibians.)
Land use policies (stocking fish in amphibian habitat, installation of dams, planting of non-native plants.)
Habitat loss and degradation (including agriculture, construction, logging, urbanization and mining.)
Habitat fragmentation (division of a habitat by roadways, housing developments and other impenetrable barriers.)

The first tadpoles of grass frogs appeared in the natural areas of Moscow
In spring, these amphibians, listed in the Red Book of Moscow under the 2nd category of rarity, are in a hurry to lay their eggs before the sun starts to bake. In 7–10 days, a new generation of amphibians may already be born.
11 species of amphibians live in the natural areas of Moscow, including 5 species of frogs: grass and moor frogs (both are listed under the 2nd category in the Red Book of Moscow), as well as lake frog, pond frog, hybrid green frog, listed in the so-called Supervisory List of the Red Data Book of Moscow.
The common frog is a common species in the European part of Russia. And yet it is listed in the Red Book of the city of Moscow. Usually this species of amphibians comes out of hibernation early enough. They begin to appear on the natural territory of Moscow already in mid-March – April. This spring, Mospriroda specialists have already recorded these amphibians in many natural areas, including the Dolgie Prudy, Tyoply Stan, Kuskovo nature reserves, the Terletsky forest park, and the Bitsevsky Forest and Izmailovo nature and historical parks.
Did the job – walk boldly
Common frogs spend most of the warm season on land, but in spring they are concentrated around small stagnant pools and large puddles, which these amphibians use to breed. For the development of eggs, females choose well-warmed areas of reservoirs. They try to lay their eggs as early as possible, before the sun starts to bake harder and the puddles dry up, because of which the tadpoles can die.
After spawning, female common frogs quickly return to their usual habitats, while males still stay for a while and look for new mates. The duration of caviar development directly depends on temperature conditions. In warm weather, tadpoles may appear within 7–10 days. And by the end of June, you can already see little frogs.
Active Cavalier Frogs
During spring cold snaps, amphibians become slow and hide. They become active again on warm days when insects appear. At this time, the frogs come out of their hiding places and rush to the place of mating games. To attract the attention of a female, males have to try. They croak loudly, amplifying the sound with the help of special resonators located at the corners of the lower jaw, and even dance.
The common frog, like the moor, with which they are similar in appearance, belongs to the brown frogs. Common frogs are usually less than 10 cm in size. These amphibians are reddish-brown in color with dark spots on their backs and sides. Males have a bluish throat during the mating season.
Frogs are not afraid of cold weather
Of all the species of tailless amphibians found in Moscow natural areas, brown frogs are the most resistant to cold.

Accommodations for the SHSAT and LaGuardia High School Auditions
Students with disabilities who have IEPs or approved 504 Accommodation Plans and English Language Learners are eligible for test supports and accommodations. ELL accommodations are available for students up to two years after they reach proficiency on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT). Work with your school counselor to confirm accommodations for your audition and/or test.
About Testing Accommodations
The purpose of testing accommodations is to allow students with disabilities and limited English proficiency to participate in assessments on equal basis with their peers. Testing accommodations provide the opportunity for eligible students to demonstrate mastery of skills and knowledge without being limited or unfairly restricted due to the effects of a disability or language proficiency.
Accommodations for LaGuardia High School auditions and/or the SHSAT are provided based on a student’s existing testing accommodations. If applicable, these are documented on your IEP or 504 Plan and/or based on your ELL status.
The following students are eligible to receive testing and/or audition accommodations on LaGuardia High School auditions and the SHSAT:
Students with disabilities (SWDs) who have IEPs or 504 Plans that include testing accommodations
Current English Language Learners (ELLs)
Former ELLs who achieved proficiency on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) in 2021 and/or 2022.
Please note:
Accommodations requested only for LaGuardia High School Auditions and/or the SHSAT are not allowed. Students must demonstrate a documented history or needing and using testing accommodations.
Students with 504 Plans must have their accommodations approved every year. Schools and families must review (and approve, if appropriate) the student’s 2022-2023 504 Plan no later than the last day of school in June 2022. Learn more about 504 Plans on the 504 accommodations page.
Some testing accommodations are not needed for LaGuardia auditions and the SHSAT. There are some accommodations that students may use on other tests that may not be needed for the SHSAT. For example, students who use a computer or other device for tests with essays will not need to use this accommodation on the SHSAT because there are no essays on the test.
Some accommodations are not permitted for LaGuardia auditions and/or the SHSAT. Students with existing accommodations will receive them unless a particular accommodation interferes with the content or skill being measured by the audition or test. In such cases, no students will receive this accommodation. For example:
Students are not permitted to use calculators and/or math tables on the Math section of the SHSAT because this section of the test measures students’ mathematical computation skills.
Oral interpretation and written translation of the SHSAT directions, questions, and answers are not permitted because this changes the standardization of the test. (ELLs who need translations are permitted to use the bilingual math glossaries provided by the testing site on the Math section of the SHSAT only)
Tip: Work with your school counselor to ask about testing accommodations or specific situations that may not be addressed in this guide. Any approved accommodations will appear on your audition or test ticket.
Accommodations for English Language Learners (ELLs)
ELLs and eligible former ELLs taking the SHSAT are granted extended testing time totaling 360 minutes (2x standard testing time) as well as two 15-minute breaks after the first 180 minutes of testing. The extended time is calculated from the start time of the SHSAT, not the arrival to the testing site.
Bilingual math glossaries will also be provided on the day of the SHSAT at each test administration site in Arabic, Bengali/Bangla, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), French, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu. Accommodations for Students with IEPS or 504 Plans
Students with disabilities (SWD) will be provided with the accommodations listed in their IEPs or 504 Plans unless a specific accommodation is not needed or permitted when taking the SHSAT, as detailed in the beginning of this section.
If your IEP or 504 Plan includes the use of assistive technology such as Frequency Modulation (FM) Unit or other aids, such as masks, markers, highlighters, pencil grip, slant board, or a magnifying glass, you must bring these with you on the day of the SHSAT and/or audition if needed. The test or audition sites will not provide these aids.
If you have a scribe on your IEP or 504 Plan, it is important to discuss with your school counselor and work with your IEP or 504 team to determine what you need on the SHSAT and to make sure the accommodation is listed on your IEP or 504 as well as your test ticket.
Students who require a scribe: You will need a scribe if you are unable to circle your answers in the test booklet. Students who require a scribe on testing day will have the test administered individually.
Students who do not need a scribe: If you are able to circle answers in the test booklet, you will be provided with the “Answers Recorded in the Test Booklet” accommodation. In this case, the proctor will assist you with transcribing the answers from the test booklet onto the answer sheet at the conclusion of the test.
SHSAT Administration for Students with Extended Time
All students taking the SHSAT must stay in testing rooms for the entire standard test administration time (180 minutes), with the exception of using the bathroom.
Once the standard test administration time (180 minutes) is over, students with an accommodation of extended time may leave if they have finished working on the exam. Students that decide to leave after the first 180 minutes of the standard test administration time must sign out to indicate they understood they gave up their remaining available time on the SHSAT. Students with this accommodation will have a break at the conclusion of the 180 minutes, and then again after another 90 minutes have passed. If a parent or guardian does not want their child to leave before the full amount of extended time period has ended, the parent/guardian is responsible for communicating this to their child before the test begins. Retests will not be provided to students who choose to leave before the end of their extended time.
How to Confirm or Request Testing Accommodations
During the SHSAT and audition registration period, your current DOE, charter, or non-public (private or parochial) school is responsible for entering and/or confirming the appropriate testing accommodations in MySchools.
If you have a 504 Plan or attend a charter or non-public (private or parochial) school and have a similar school-based accommodation plan, all documentation must be submitted to the DOE for review at least three weeks before the registration deadline.
Documentation received after this deadline may not be reviewed in time for the student’s scheduled test date.
Contact your current school counselor with questions about accommodations on the SHSAT.
Non-public school students (who attend private or parochial schools) requesting accommodations during their LaGuardia auditions must work with their school counselor to enter and/or confirm accommodations. Please note that neither parents/guardians nor school staff should send accommodations directly to LaGuardia High School.
Accommodations must be reviewed and approved before audition tickets are available.
Approved accommodations for LaGuardia High School auditions must appear on students’ audition tickets.
Non-public school students with disabilities (SWDs) (who attend private or parochial schools) who do not have an IEP or 504 Plan indicating their need for testing accommodations must work with their school counselors to complete a Request for Accommodations form and submit the form and supporting documentation to the DOE for review and approval by the deadline provided.
Parents/guardians can get this form from your current school.
Your school counselor is responsible for submitting the form by the required date. The DOE may need additional information about how your accommodations were determined and will verify the documented history and need for requested accommodations.
How to Opt Out of Accommodations
If you are an ELL and/or have an IEP or 504 Plan but your parents/guardians wish to opt out of accommodations for the SHSAT or LaGuardia auditions, please contact your school counselor. School counselors will work with parents/guardians to complete the Accommodations Opt-Out Form for SHSAT and LaGuardia Auditions. Neither school counselors nor students may opt out of testing/audition accommodations without parent/guardian consent; written consent by a parent/guardian is required.
If it is not possible to provide written consent to opt out of testing accommodations before the registration deadline, parents/guardians must provide their written consent on the test or audition day to opt out of the testing accommodations listed on their child’s ticket.
On testing or audition day, students cannot modify or opt out of the testing accommodations listed on their ticket unless parent/guardian consent has been provided in writing on the test or audition ticket.
How to Request Emergency Accommodations
Students who demonstrate disabilities or temporary impairments within 30 days of the SHSAT may request certain emergency testing accommodations, if approved by the principal of the student’s current school. Emergency testing accommodations are intended for use by students whose disabilities or injuries occur after the registration deadline but before their scheduled testing/audition day and without enough time to develop an IEP or 504 Plan.
If you need emergency accommodations for the SHSAT and/or LaGuardia auditions, your family should work with a school counselor to complete the Emergency Testing Request form and ask the counselor to alert the DOE as soon as possible that emergency accommodations may be needed—this must be communicated prior to the testing day or audition day. If a family requests an accommodation without giving the DOE sufficient time to review the request before your standard SHSAT administration date or before the child’s audition date, the student’s test or audition may be rescheduled to ensure that your request for accommodations can be properly reviewed.
Tip: Review the New York City Department of Education’s resources on testing accommodations for additional information on the testing accommodations page.

How Do Students Get Offers to the Testing Specialized High Schools?
Offers to the eight testing Specialized High Schools are based on each student’s SHSAT score, school preference order, and the number of seats at each school. These offers are made to each school in descending SHSAT score order until all seats at each school are filled.
Below is the lowest SHSAT score that resulted in a ninth-grade offer at each school for fall 2023. The lowest qualifying score changes each year based on students’ preferences and SHSAT scores, so students who are testing for a different year should not use these scores to determine their chances of an offer to any of the schools.

Offers to the testing Specialized High Schools are made in descending order of SHSAT score, combined with each student’s preferences listed on their SHSAT registration. Here’s how that works:
The student with the highest SHSAT score receives an offer to their first choice school. The student with the next highest SHSAT score receives an offer to their first choice school. This continues student by student in downward score order until a student’s first-choice school does not have any remaining seats. That student is then considered for their second-choice school. If there are remaining seats at the second-choice school, that student receives an offer there. If the second-choice school has no remaining seats, that student is considered for their third-choice school, and so on. This continues until all seats at all Specialized High Schools have been filled.
If a student doesn’t get an offer to their first-choice school, it is because all seats at that school have been filled by students with higher SHSAT scores. Similarly, if a student gets an offer to a non-first choice school, it is because all seats at schools they listed higher have been filled by students with higher SHSAT scores (e. g., if a student gets an offer to their fourth-choice school, then seats at their first to third-choice schools are filled with higher scoring students.)
If a student doesn’t get any offer to a testing Specialized High School, it is because all seats at all the schools they listed on their SHSAT registration are filled by students with higher SHSAT scores. Students are not considered for offers to schools that are not listed on their SHSAT registration.
The SHSAT is the only criteria used to admit students to the eight testing Specialized High Schools; no other criteria are used.
The table above shows the lowest qualifying score that resulted in an offer to each testing Specialized High School this year. This means that any student with a SHSAT score lower than one listed on the table did not get an offer to that school. The lowest score to result in an offer changes each year based on that SHSAT scores and preferences of the pool of testers for that specific SHSAT administration

What is a boarding school?
A boarding school is a place where students live on campus while attending classes.
Dormitories and other hostels are common in these schools, but are usually reserved for high school students and not students.
With an emphasis on learning, socialization and personal growth, boarding schools are dedicated to helping students reach their full academic potential.
Why send a child to a boarding school?
Coping with learning problems:
When students feel they don’t belong in school, attending a specialized boarding school can be a mental oasis.
To maintain stability and support:
Many very successful dual-occupation families find it difficult to give their children a stable place to study. It’s hard to be at a trade meeting in the city when your child is playing football at 4 years old.
All of these things are part of a normal day at an elementary boarding school.
To make communication positive and inclusive:
Living in a hostel gives students the opportunity to develop their independence, maturity and self-awareness while away from home.
Students attending a boarding school are more likely than those attending a public school to acquire important life skills, including time management, work ethic and independence.

Data Collection & Reporting System for Special Education
Please take note of the following reporting considerations!
**Grantees need to make arrangements to complete required reports that are due after their grants end. Sometimes these reports may not be due for several months to a year after the grant ends. For example, for a grant that ends on September 30th and where programming occurred in the prior summer or September, the required reports may not be due until the following fall.**
Grantees are responsible for the content, timeliness, and accuracy of their reports, even if they delegate them to someone else. Work in collaboration with your centers, staff, and/or local evaluator to ensure that you are using and reporting consistent information.
Expenditure Reports follow the fiscal/contract year for your grant.
Annual summative reports (state and federal) and your annual local evaluation report follow the federal program year. For the program year 2022-23 reporting round, this includes summer 2022andschool year 2022-23. This means your reports will span more than one contract year.
If you have questions about how to report, please contact the 21st CCLC Evaluation Team.
Annual Summative Reports
Detailed information about reporting requirements can be found in the Pennsylvania 21st CCLC Accountability and Reporting Guide. The Grantee Annual Reporting Summary provides the details, deadlines, and links for federal, state, and local reporting.
State 21CCLC Dashboard
Grantees submit contact information, operations data, and student participation counts to the state via the state 21CCLC Dashboard. For assistance with navigating the dashboard, please refer to this guide or reach out to Falon Weidman.
Federal 21APR Reporting
Grantees complete federal reporting in the 21APR system. For instructions on how to navigate this system, please refer to the Support section upon login. To assist with federal reporting, grantees may use the PA 21CCLC Grantee Evaluation Workbook (coming soon!).

Great Victory Day in kindergarten
Updated on 05/05/2023 16:02
Victory Day bright holiday Celebrated by the whole country, Our grandparents They put on orders…
May 9 is a holiday of the Great Victory. Back in 1941, the whole country stood up to defend the Fatherland and was able to defend the right to life under a peaceful sky. On Victory Day, each of us feels especially proud of our history.
A solemn celebration of Victory Day took place in the kindergarten: children recited poems about the war; sang songs about the Victory Day, about veterans and soldiers; sang the national anthem of Russia. In a solemn atmosphere, pupils of senior and preparatory groups were awarded certificates for participation in the city creative competition dedicated to the celebration of the Great Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War “Victory is a bright day!”
On the eve of the celebration of the 78th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 children together with teachers took part in the All-Russian action “Windows of Victory”. With the help of drawings and inscriptions, windows were decorated in order to express gratitude to the heroes who defeated fascism in the Great Patriotic War in this way. #Windows of Victory
Remembering the exploits of grandfathers and great-grandfathers, we sincerely congratulate everyone on Victory Day! Clear skies, bright sun, peace, joy and happiness to all living on Earth!
All-Russian lesson on “Basics of life safety” in kindergarten
Updated on 04/28/2023 09:23
Work on the safety of children occupies a special place in the educational process of a preschool institution. The teachers held the All-Russian lesson on “Fundamentals of Life Safety”. The events were dedicated to the 374th anniversary of the Russian fire department and the safe recreation of children in the summer. On the eve of Fire Protection Day, our preschoolers met with real firefighters on the territory of the kindergarten. Preschoolers with interest examined the special equipment used to extinguish fires. Firefighters fixed the rules of fire safety in everyday life with the pupils. Rescuers showed how to work with a fire hose, carrying out fire extinguishing. The children were shown items of combat clothing, fire and rescue equipment. Everyone wanted to be a firefighter and put out the fire. Firefighters paid special attention to children’s careful handling of matches. Preschoolers learned a lot of useful information from conversations with employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, those involved in extinguishing fires. The children realized that in many cases life and health depend on their knowledge, skills and abilities. At the end of the meeting, the children were told how to behave in case of a fire and how to prevent it from occurring, and the employees were briefed on fire safety.

Updated on 25.04.2023 15:42
Earth Day is celebrated annually April 22, . In kindergarten, this thematic day is held to expand environmental knowledge in children, to cultivate a respect for nature and a sense of responsibility for all life on our planet. Respect for our planet is the business of all people on Earth. In groups, discussions were held with the pupils about the meaning of the holiday “Earth Day”, about the rules of behavior in the city and in nature. The guys prepared postcards with wishes for the birthday of “Earth”. We must protect every tree, every bush, do not pick flowers, do not break trees, do not destroy nests, do not litter! After all, the future of our planet, the future of our native Earth, the future of our Motherland depends on us!
