Strange Chinese feud between Soros and Blackrock amid financial troubles of Chinese corporations
In recent days, a strange war of words has erupted in the financial media between billionaire hedge fund and color revolution specialist George Soros and giant investment group BlackRock. The problem lies in BlackRock CEO Larry Fink’s decision to open China’s first foreign-owned mutual fund, supposedly to attract savings from China’s new (and rapidly disappearing) middle-income population. In a recent newspaper interview, Soros called BlackRock’s decision a threat to BlackRock investors and US national security.
This seemingly absurd clash of views between two financial giants—the predators of Wall Street—has a much bigger story—the looming systemic collapse within China of what is arguably the largest debt pyramid in the world. This could have a domino effect on the entire global economy much more than the Lehman crisis in September 2008.
“Global Economic Terrorist..:”
On Sept. 6, Soros wrote a guest editorial in the Wall Street Journal in which he scathingly criticized BlackRock for investing in China: “It is a sad mistake to invest billions of dollars in China now.
This will likely result in a loss of money for BlackRock customers and, more importantly, harm the national security interests of the US and other democratic countries.” Not like Soros to refer to US national security… He continued: “The BlackRock initiative threatens the national security interests of the US and other democracies because the money invested in China will help advance President Xi’s regime, which is repressive at home and aggressive for abroad”. BlackRock released a response stating, “The US and China have a large and complex economic relationship…Through our investment activities, US Asset Managers and other financial institutions are contributing to the economic interconnection of the world’s two largest economies. ”
At a time when the bloated debt edifice of Chinese banks and real estate conglomerates is collapsing almost daily, defending BlackRock and CEO Fink hardly rings true. This suggests that there is much more behind the BlackRock-China relationship and the Soros attack. Two days before the publication of Soros’ article in the magazine, the official newspaper China Global Times wrote a scathing article calling Soros a “global economic terrorist.” One of their accusations was that Soros money financed the “color revolution” in Hong Kong in 2019.year against the new laws of Beijing, de facto ending the independent status of the island.
However, the scathing attack on Soros was most likely sparked by a post Soros wrote in the London Financial Times five days earlier in which he scathingly attacked Xi Jinping and the current crackdown on private Chinese companies such as Jack Ma’s Alibaba and Ant financial. In an Aug. 30 statement, Soros called President Xi Jinping’s crackdown on private enterprise a “significant brake on the Chinese economy” that “could lead to collapse. ” He also pointed out that major Western stock indexes such as MSCI Morgenstanley and ESG BlackRock have “virtually forced hundreds of billions of dollars held by American investors into Chinese companies whose corporate governance is not up to the required standard—power and accountability are now exercised by one person (Xi ) that is not accountable to any international body.” He urged Congress to pass laws that would restrict investment by asset managers to “companies where the actual governance structures are transparent and consistent with stakeholders.”
A curious aspect of Soros’ accusations against Beijing’s financial transparency is that they are factually true, based on public statements by Chinese regulators and Wall Street managers and regulators. China’s financial markets are opaque and the rules change unpredictably as to who gets saved and who doesn’t. The ongoing collapse of huge Chinese real estate and financial group Evergrande is just one of the recent examples of high-risk investment in China today.
Not that big
“The world’s most valuable real estate group is also the world’s most indebted real estate group. Evergrande, based in Shenzhen, has been teetering on the brink of bankruptcy for months as it fails to repay loans to one after another, with major rating agencies downgrading it to “junk” status. The group owes a total of $305 billion, and this debt is offshore in dollar loans as well as domestic non-regulated loans derived from so-called WMPS or asset management products. As its finances explode and apartment sales plummet, tens of thousands of would-be apartment owners are at risk of paying for unfinished apartments. To date, China’s central bank has not intervened, but speculation is growing that government aid to the group is in the pipeline. days away to prevent systemic financial defeat. The reason seems to be that Evergrande is just the tip of the iceberg of China’s highly bloated corporate debt sector.
In August, China Huarong Asset Management Co. , a so-called “bad bank” set up by the Treasury to manage the assets of troubled Chinese companies, was itself supposed to be bailed out by the state to prevent what many feared would become China’s “Lehman crisis.” Huarong is one of four such state-owned companies created after the 1998 Asian financial crisis to manage the assets of bankrupt state-owned companies. Though majority-owned by the Chinese Ministry of Finance, it has sold shares to others since 2014, including Goldman Sachs and Warburg Pincus.
After 2014, Huarong grew into a non-banking financial giant and financed its impressive growth with debt. This started to loosen up in 2020 during the covid crisis. In January 2021, a Chinese court heard the case of Chairman Lai Xiaomin, who was sentenced to death without respite for bribery, embezzlement and bigamy, on a strange set of charges. The court said: “He endangered [China’s] financial stability.”
When the Huarong group failed to release its annual financial report by the late March deadline, fears of a chain reaction of bankruptcy rose as billions of its offshore dollar bonds were at risk. The total debt was estimated at about 209billion dollars. Instead of conservatively managing distressed assets, Lay reportedly used the Treasury Department’s non-banking status for everything from private equity to real estate speculation to junk bond trading, borrowing rabidly billions. The state forced its own CITIC group to provide aid to Huarong in August. However, it is clear that this is only the beginning of the growing financial crisis in China.
Crash landing?
For months, the Xi Politburo has been trying with growing desperation to stem the growth of the colossal financial bubble in the real estate sector. Earlier this year, Xi Jinping launched the slogan “housing is for living, not for speculation.” His moves to freeze and slowly deflate the huge real estate bubble are likely to be overdue. Construction and real estate sales account for the largest portion of China’s GDP, at over 28% according to official estimates. Demanding that investments now go into “productive” projects, and not into speculation in constantly rising real estate prices, is not so easy.
Xi is increasingly taking steps to control China’s out-of-control real estate bubble and its threat of a systemic crisis similar to the one that hit the US in 2008 by taking measures to limit real estate lending. According to Chinese data, total real estate financing in the first half of 2021 was down 13% compared to 2020. At the same time, Chinese real estate companies owe over 1.3 trillion yuan in bonds and other debts, or $200 billion in 2021 and nearly 1 trillion yuan in 2022. The contract real estate sector will make such huge payouts increasingly impossible and will no doubt lead to more defaults across China. Recently, Ping An, China’s largest insurance group, which also invests heavily in real estate, was forced to set aside provisions for $5.5 billion in possible loan losses related to its investment in a defaulter, China Fortune Land Development Co.
If only Evergrande were insolvent due to debt defaults in a shrinking economy, the Chinese authorities would certainly be able to deal with it one way or another by requiring its state-owned banks or large groups like CITIC to simply swallow bad debts to contain the spread of the crisis. The problem is that Evergrande, Huarong, Pina Nh and other big Chinese real estate investors are clearly just symptoms of an economy that has taken on debt far beyond what was reasonable. In April, the Beijing CPC State Council told local governments that their so-called Local Government Financing Facility, with the alleged (no one knows) trillions of dollars they had in unregulated shadow bank loans used to fund local projects, were to get rid of excess bad loans or go broke.
On July 1, Beijing announced that local government revenues from the sale of land to developers, which account for about half of all local revenues, should go to the Central Beijing Ministry of Finance and no longer be used at the local level. This guarantees a catastrophic collapse of local shadow banks and multi-trillion-dollar construction projects. No more rescue measures in Beijing. At the same time, the solvency of China’s fragile multi-trillion dollar “small” banking sector is in question as the number of bank closures increases. Now that the nation’s state-owned giants are close to bankruptcy, the war of words between BlackRock and George Soros is taking on a significantly new light. China is in a serious debt crisis.
China already has the world’s longest high-speed rail, and they’re losing money. The Belt and Road Initiative is mired in debt that countries cannot repay, and Chinese banks have slashed loans for BRI Silk Road projects from $75 billion in 2016 to $4 billion in 2020. Its demographic crisis means that the endless flow of cheap rural labor to build this infrastructure is drastically reduced. The middle class is deeply indebted to buyers of new cars and homes in good times. Total household debt, including mortgages and consumer loans for cars and appliances, was a whopping 62% of GDP in 2020. The Institute of International Finance (IIF) has estimated that China’s total domestic debt has risen to 335 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020.
Helping Beijing on Wall Street?
Beijing appears to be seeking a large bailout from foreign investors in its distressed stocks and bonds, led by Wall Street. Major banks and Wall Street investors have been working closely with China for several years. With US stock markets at dangerous all-time highs and the EU in deep trouble, they may be hoping China can bail them out, despite clear evidence that Chinese corporate accounting rules are opaque, as Evergrande shows. Since 2019The widely used MSCI Morgan Stanley Worldwide All-Country Index was allowed a list of China’s largest companies, which Soros aptly pointed out is forcing Western stock funds to buy billions of dollars worth of Chinese stock. BlackRock is now allowed to invest Chinese personal savings in its funds. It is unclear if there are any other details in this deal.
This is the potential gold bank where Wall Street and Blackrock line up outside of Beijing. Soros’ condemnation of BlackRock, the world’s largest private equity fund, is clearly strategic. Could it be that Soros intends to repeat his collapse of the bubble in the Russian bond market in 19’98 after making a profit? If so, it’s no wonder Soros is being labeled an “economic terrorist” by the official Chinese media. Whatever the trigger, such a collapse of the Chinese debt bubble would make the 2008 Lehman crisis pale.

Weather in the USA by months and travel tips
In January , after the Christmas holidays, the influx of tourists in US is reduced. For the northern states, this is a time of short daylight hours and heavy snowfalls that occur in many regions. You will need warm winter clothes to be comfortable in cities like Boston , New York and Philadelphia . In the latter, a New Year’s parade of mummers is held every year. To enjoy the snow, head to Park City , Utah or Aspen , Colorado , both of which are very popular ski resorts. In addition, Aspen hosts the Winter World Extreme Games at the end of the month.
Same time in southern states like Florida , Louisiana and Texas , the weather is much warmer, with an average temperature of 16-18°C. In Southern California in January a large number of sun lovers gather. Mostly they go to relax on the beaches of Orange County and serene San Diego or admire the desert landscapes of the city of Palm Springs and national parks Joshua Tree and Death Valley . That being said, Hawaii is the place to go if you really want to escape the winter melancholy. The daily temperature here is around 20-25 °C.

On February , , the days are cold and dark in many northern states. However, this is a great time to take a break in the ski resorts, as well as take advantage of discounts in popular cities such as Chicago and Washington . You can time your trip to coincide with President’s Day (a public holiday) on the third Monday of the month or the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States. Another vacation option is visiting the deserts of the 9 states0062 Wyoming and Montana for wolf watching or dog sledding – just remember to dress warmly.
To the southwest, many tourists head to Grand Canyon to see it in all its winter splendor, and to the east New Orleans , locals and visitors alike prepare for the legendary parades and masquerade balls of the Mardi Gras festival, which held at the end of the month. At February it’s getting much warmer here, so you can bring lighter clothes with you, as well as a bright suit for a night of celebration.

With the first spring buds coming, many Americans, especially those in the South, are getting ready for festivals and holidays again. Pleasant warm weather is expected in March in states such as Georgia , Tennessee and California . A large number of young Americans travel to Florida for spring break. It is the warmest part of the country with an average temperature of around 22°C and plenty of beaches and snorkelling opportunities.
In the north, changes in the weather are not so obvious. It’s still snowing here, so Utah , Colorado and Wyoming are still in ski season. Pack plenty of warm clothes if you’re planning a trip to Boston or New York , two cities that compete each year for the best St. Patrick’s Day parade. The end of the month is the perfect time to visit Washington , where the National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place and hundreds of pink and white flowering trees line the Tidal Basin.

Northern metropolitan areas such as New York , Chicago and Washington are also quite warm, with daytime temperatures reaching 18-23°C. So you can not be afraid of the cold, although just in case you should take a light waterproof jacket with you.
Such weather conditions make May the best time to see the country’s natural attractions. Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and many of the national parks in Utah turn into real geological wonders, mainly because wildlife wakes up from hibernation, and in Death Valley in California you can see amazing at night spectacle is the Milky Way. The big event of the month is the Cinco de Mayo festival, which is a celebration of Mexican culture with live music, dance and family activities in different parts of the country. Ethel Voynich – Ethel Voynich
Ethel Lilian Voynich , nee Logical (May 11, 1864 – July 27, 1960) Irish writer and musician, as well as a supporter of several revolutionary ideas. She was born in Cork but grew up in England. Voynich was a significant figure not only in recent times. Victorian literary scene, but also in the circles of Russian émigrés. She is best known for her novel
biography
Ethel Lillian Bull was born on May 11, 1864 at Litchfield Cottage, Blackrock, Ballintemple, Cork, [1] the youngest daughter of mathematician George Boole (father of Logic), mathematician and educator Mary Everest, [2] who was the niece of George Everest and writer for Crank , early 20th century periodical. [3] Her father died six months after she was born. Her mother returned to her native England with her daughters and was able to live on a small state pension until she was appointed librarian at King’s College London. [4] When she was eight years old, Ethel contracted an erysipelas disease associated with poor sanitation. Her mother decided to send her to her brother in Lancashire, believing that this would benefit her health. Described as a “religious fanatic and sadist”, [4] who regularly beat his children, he apparently forced Ethel to play the piano for hours. Ethel returned to London at the age of ten. She became withdrawn, dressed in black, and called herself “Lily”. [4]
At the age of eighteen, she received access to the inheritance. This enabled her to study piano and musical composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, which she attended from 1882 to 1885. During this period, she was increasingly attracted to revolutionary politics. Returning to London, she learned Russian from Sergei Kravchinsky, known as Stepnyak, who encouraged her to leave for Russia. [4] From 1887 to 1889 she worked as a governess in St. Petersburg, where she lived with Kravchinsky’s daughter-in-law, Preskovya Karaulova. Through her, she became connected with the revolutionary. Populists. [5] After her return to Britain, she settled in London, where she became involved in pro-revolutionary activities. Together with Kravchinsky she founded the Society of Friends of Russian Freedom, and helped edit Svobodnaya Rossiya , the Narodniks’ English-language magazine. [5]
V 189In 0, she met Michal Gabdank-Vojnicz, a Polish revolutionary who had fled Siberia. Soon he also became the life partner of Ethel Bull. By 1895 they were living together and she called herself Mrs. Voynich. They married in 1902. [4] In 1904 he translated his name into English. Wilfrid Michael Voynich and became a dealer in antique books, giving his name to the Voynich Manuscript.
In 1897 she published Gadfly which was an immediate international success. She published three more novels. Jack Raymond (1901), Olive Latham (1904) and A Friendship Broken (1910), but none of these compare in popularity with her first book. [5]
The Voynichs emigrated to the United States in 1920 after Wilfred moved the main base of his book business to New York. From that point on, she focused more on music, working at a music school, but continued her writing career as a translator, translating from Russian, Polish and French. Last novel, Take off your shoes was published in 1945. [5]
Voynich did not know about the huge sales of Gadfly in the Soviet Union until she was visited in New York in 1955 by a Russian diplomat who told her how highly she was valued in the country. The following year, Adlai Stevenson entered into an agreement to pay her a fee of $15,000. [4]
Ethel Lilian Voynich died on July 27, 1960 at the age of 96. According to her will, her body was cremated, and the ashes were scattered across Central Park to New York.
Alleged affair with Reilly
According to British journalist Robin Bruce Lockhart, Sidney Reilly – a Russian-born operative hired by an emigrant intelligence network from Scotland Yard’s Special Branch – met Ethel Voynich in London in 1895. Lockhart, whose father, R. H. Bruce Lockhart knew Reilly, claims that Reilly and Voynich had a sexual relationship and traveled to Italy together. During their affair, Reilly is said to have bared his soul and told her the story of his spying activities. After their brief romance, Voynich published Gadfly , whose central character Arthur Burton was based on Reilly. [6] In 2004, writer Andrew Cook suggested that Reilly may have reported on Voynich and her political activities to William Melville of the Metropolitan Police Special Branch. [7] In 2016, new evidence emerged from archival communications between Ann Fremantle, who attempted to compile a biography of Ethel Voynich and Ethel’s Hinton relative. Evidence shows that between Reilly and her in Florence in 189There was some kind of connection in 5 years. [8]
Work
Gadfly
She is best known for her first novel Gadfly , first published in 1897 in the United States (June) and Great Britain (September), about the struggle of an international revolutionary in Italy who in general terms relied on the figure of Giuseppe Mazzini. This novel was very popular in the Soviet Union and was a major bestseller and required reading where it was considered ideologically useful; for the same reasons, the novel was also popular in the People’s Republic of China. By the time of Voynich’s death Gadfly sold approximately 2,500,000 copies in the Soviet Union and was made into two Russian films, first in 1928 in Soviet Georgia ( Krazana ) and then again in 1955. [9]
Historian Mark Mazover describes Gadfly as a “radical English novel fin de siècle”, translated into Yiddish by his grandfather Max Mazover, published in 1907 in Vilna, then part of the Russian Empire, now Vilnius, Lithuania . His dramatic story serves as an allegory for the struggle for freedom in Russia. It not only spread widely among the socialists in Russia, but was also extremely popular with progressive people in other countries, whose popularity in Britain soared towards the end of the First World War. Sidney Reilly, the famous British “Spy Spy”, is said to have either copied himself or served as a model for the Voynich hero. Reilly, in turn, used Ian Fleming as a model for James Bond, the most famous fictional spy of the Cold War. [10]
In the 1955 film of the novel by the Soviet director Alexander Feintsimmer, it is noteworthy that the composer Dmitry Shostakovich wrote the score (see Lux “The Gadfly” ). Along with some other passages, the Romance movement has since become very popular. Shostakovich’s Gadfly theme was also used in the 1980s, in the BBC Series Reilly, Ace of Spies . In 1980, the novel was again filmed as a television miniseries. Gadfly , featuring Sergei Bondarchuk as Montanelli’s father. Various other adaptations exist, including at least three operas and two ballets.
Other novels
The other four Voynich novels were never as successful as The Gadfly , but two of them expanded their story. A Broken Friendship (1910) develops The Gadfly’ protagonist’s backstory, [5] and Take Off Thy Shoes (1945), Voynich’s last novel, further focuses on the life of the protagonist’s family and ancestors; “a long chronicle spanning several generations”, set in the 18th century. [4]
Her second novel, Jack Raymond (1901), was soon followed by her third, Olive Latham (1904) . Nearly ten years later, Voynich took a break from composing and focused on music. [11]
Music
Voynich began composing music around 1910. Society of Women Musicians during the First World War. After she and her husband moved to New York, she devoted herself to music much more, creating many adaptations and transcriptions of existing works. At 19In 31 she published an edited volume of Chopin’s letters. [12] From 1933 to 1943 she worked at the Pius X School of Liturgical Music in Manhattan. There she composed a number of cantatas and other works that were performed at the college, including Babylon , Jerusalem , Epitaph in Ballad Form and The Sunken City . She also worked on the history of music, compiling detailed commentaries on the music of different eras. Most of her music remains unpublished and is held by the Library of Congress. [4] The recent evaluation of the cantata in 2005 Babylon by an outstanding English composer was not very favorable. “The overall impression is amateurishness and rudeness.” [13]

And the minor planet 2032 Ethel, discovered in 1970 by the Soviet astronomer Tamara Mikhailovna Smirnova, is named after her. [14]

On October 26, 1875, Spring Rice married Elizabeth Butcher (d. April 27, 1908), eldest daughter of Most Rev. Rt. The Right Honorable Samuel Butcher, Bishop of Meath, to County Meath. Together they had three children who were taught to speak Irish fluently.

Lord Monteagle was the cousin of Sir Cecil Spring Rice, British Ambassador to the United States from 1912 to 1918.
Politics
Like his grandfather, Lord Monteagle was a moderate trade unionist when he took his seat in the House of Lords. He was originally a member of the Liberal Party, and in 1885 wrote a pamphlet called Liberal politics in Ireland . [6] The next year he became a Liberal Unionist out of fear that Gladstone’s Home Rule Act 1886 would lead to the complete independence of Ireland and the breakup of the United Kingdom. [7] As a consequence, Lord Monteagle sat with fellow Irish Unionists and he became a leading figure among the moderate Southern Unionists. As a resident of Ireland, he witnessed the deterioration of the political situation in the 1890s. Gradually he came to believe that the unions should recognize that a compromise and workable agreement had to be reached with the Irish nationalists in order to defend the Union. [8] In 1911 he was one of the founders and later president of the Irish Proportional Representation Society, believing that proportional representation would help prevent conflict between unionists and nationalists in self-governing Ireland. In 1917, he helped organize the Irish Convention, using his personal connections to ensure that Sinn Féin’s interests were represented after the party’s leadership refused to come. [9] In the same year he publicly described himself as a moderate who still believed in the Union principle, but admitted that it did not work for most Irish people. [10] He feared that Ireland would not become divided and in 1919 he left the splintered Unionist alliance to join the Irish Dominion League. The league was led by his close friend and helpful colleague, Sir Horace Plunkett. [11] [12] Subsequently he became chairman of the London branch of the League and tried to encourage David Lloyd George The Russian government should grant dominion status to a united Ireland in accordance with the views of the League. [13] In June 1920 he organized meetings between representatives of the British government and the Nationalists. George Gavan Duffy. [14] A month later he proposed the Dominion of Ireland Bill in the House of Lords at the same time as the government proposal. The Irish government’s bill was debated in the British Parliament. [15] His bill would have granted extensive self-government to a united Ireland with responsibility for all domestic matters as a dominion within the empire. Monteagle argued that the foreign affairs and defense of Ireland should, however, remain the responsibility of the Government of Westminster. Confronted by both the Conservative Earl of Dunraven, who favored federal union through devolution, and the Liberal peers, who supported the government’s own bill, Monteagle’s bill was defeated on second reading on 1 July 1920 years 28 votes against 41 votes against. [16]
He caused outrage in the Irish trade union community when, in February 1920, Times , he called for an end to the deportation and internment without trial of newly elected Sinn Féin politicians. [17]
