Long drives, big trucks, and truck stop food are just some of the things that go along with being a trucker today. For a truck driver, however, the biggest incentive is their paycheck…

We’re well into 2022 and freight demand is on the rise again. Truck drivers are still in high demand with a massive lack of qualified drivers to fill the ranks of many trucking companies.

But for potential drivers, the biggest question remains:

how much does truck driving pay in 2022?

There are a few variables that go into the “average” we use, but it comes from over 6.5 million salaries submitted from truckers online and job boards.

A large data source of this kind allows us to have a better understanding of how much the average trucker will make and share it with you. Remember, this is a national average and you should check with each company to verify the data in your area.

Our new median pay is $59,158

This comes out to drivers earning $1,137 per week. From the data set provided, we can also see that at the lowest point, salaries were $17,200 per year. We’re assuming that this is a part-time position wherein the driver did not log a lot of time.

Alternatively, the high-end salary was $166,000 per year. These drivers either have a very long tenure, but most likely they’re owner-operators.

Pay Per Hour

Often, truck drivers will negotiate their salaries around a rate that is based on mileage and not on hours. For an experienced independent truck driver, the rate per mile could be as high as 60 cents a mile. This means for an experienced independent truck driver traveling an average of 70 miles an hour on the interstate can make an average of 42 dollars an hour. If the haul, or trip, equals out to 800 miles then the driver will make $480. This of course does not include his or her rates for accommodations.

Experience and Reputation

The average driver pay is based on your specific driving experience and reputation.

A reputable truck driver is often going to get paid a higher rate because he or she is in high demand.

Until a driver builds a reputation as a professional and reliable CDL driver they will have to be satisfied with a lower pay rate. Just like many other job professions out there, the amount you earn will depend on a person’s ability to perform at or above the employer’s expectations.

9 Highest Paying Trucking Salaries of 2022

Truck driver compensation is highly variable due to multiple factors. More experience, difficult loads, maintaining a clean driving record,  a willingness to endure risk, and travel to remote locations are some traits of  a driver  who earns a higher than average salary. 

For example, a hazmat driver transporting dangerous, toxic materials must operate their commercial vehicle with greater  care and alertness. A hazardous materials accident, even a minor one, could lead to the evacuation of entire towns. A material leak or worse, an explosion could occur and possibly cause a mass casualty incident or environmental damage.  

When you compare  the risks of transporting hazardous materials with the average dry van load of toilet paper, it’s easy to see why a hazmat driver must be more attentive to safety, and why they receive a higher-than-average compensation.  However, if transporting hazardous materials isn’t appealing to you, you have other options besides transporting hazardous materials to increase your pay.  

How Much Is a Truck Driver’s Salary?

Salary: $45,000 to $60,000 

Truck driver salaries vary depending on region, type of equipment, and a driver’s experience level. The average for drivers with their careers in full swing is around $45,000 to $60,000 annually. Depending on the company and with a safe driving record spanning several years, a driver can potentially earn upward of $70,000 or more. Drivers willing to train for extra endorsements and accept increased risk or time spent in remote areas can push their earnings much higher than average. We’ll go into that next.

9 Highest Paying Trucking Jobs

1. Owner-Operators

Salary: $247,850

Indeed lists the salary as $247,850, but this varies greatly and does not take into account all the factors. For example, an owner-operator cannot be classified as a job for the purposes of a site like Indeed, and rightly so. These drivers are much, much more than your average salaried employee. They are business owners operating a trucking company, even if they have just one truck. 

An owner-operator’s  responsibilities cover the full range of a trucking company’s operations., From managing expenses, to finding loads, to paying employees insurance, benefits, and wages. The skies are the limit for owner-operators, and their take-home pay ultimately depends on the amount of work they are willing (or able) to take on.

2. Ice Road Drivers

Salary: $65,455 per year 

Ice road driving became a famous  trucking industry niche, when the History Channel launched the show: Ice Road Truckers. As depicted in the TV show, these drivers operate in the wilderness areas deep in the northern latitudes of Canada. They take on immense risk as they traverse challenging terrain and dangerous road conditions to deliver cargo to remote towns and mining operations. Optimal conditions for these loads exist for a few short months out of the year. These drivers earn a full year’s salary in that short period, giving them time to pursue other opportunities during the off-season or enjoy their time off for better work-life balance as a trucker.

To become an ice road trucker, you need several years of experience and a history of safe operation with a broad range of equipment. It’s considered one of the most challenging ways to drive a truck but also one of the most lucrative. 

3. Oversized Load

Salary: $71,442 per year 

Oversized loads, also known as over-dimension loads, exceed the standard legal dimensions set by federal regulations. As a result, oversized haulers must display a higher than average skill in maneuvering loads  such as construction equipment, wind turbines, mobile homes, and industrial machinery.  These drivers must follow additional regulations that specify the routes and times of day these loads are legally allowed to move. As a result, an escort crew is often required, and some companies require the driver to hire their escort team. 

Because these large items are usually quite expensive, additional insurance and other precautions are required. A higher compensation for the driver behind the wheel of these behemoth loads comes with the territory.

 4. Specialty Vehicle Haulers

Salary: $82,099 

Specialty vehicle haulers transport high-value or specialty vehicles such as race cars, luxury automobiles, collectibles, and other expensive items–usually in an enclosed trailer. They must exercise extreme caution to avoid damaging these high-value loads. Even when parked, these drivers must take additional precautions to ensure another driver’s negligence doesn’t damage the load and follow special procedures to protect against theft.

5. Team Drivers

Salary: $96,573

Team drivers are the pinnacle of high-speed, long-range load delivery. Typically a team consists of two drivers in the same truck, driving in shifts to keep their load moving up to twenty-two hours a day. To give you an idea of how big a difference this makes, consider that it typically takes a solo driver six days to drive from coast to coast. A team can make the same trip in as little as three days. Companies that require such high-speed delivery pay more for the service, and the team of drivers, in turn, earns a much higher compensation.

6. Private Fleet

Salary: $95,999 – $110,000 per year 

Some major retailers and manufacturers maintain their fleet of drivers to transport goods from their distribution centers or factories to their stores or customers. One of the most well-known private fleets in America is Walmart. Their drivers enjoy higher than average pay, shorter work weeks, and best-in-industry benefit packages. The caveat to private fleets is their high standards for hiring drivers. Some private fleets require many years of experience and clean driving records. However, they also enjoy extremely low turnover compared to the rest of the trucking industry.

7. Mining Industry Drivers

Salary: $58,862 

These drivers operate massive dump trucks in mining and quarry operations. They must maintain a high level of productivity while on the clock while at the same time operating safely in an area where smaller commercial vehicles and company equipment are present. Outside the mining industry, you can find these trucks at specific industrial and port locations that handle raw materials and goods used at the base of our nation’s industrial chain. 

8. Liquids / Tanker

Salary: $88,024 

Because of the physics involved with liquids in large containers, something as simple as turning sharply or slamming on the brakes too hard can cause an instant disaster. A mistake with hazmat liquid loads such as gasoline or liquid propane can result in giant fireballs and extreme heat—often referred to as a “Viking Funeral” by the drivers. Acids and deadly fumes are also a part of the risk package for liquids/tanker drivers, and other drivers on the road often give them a wide berth. The compensation for liquids/tanker drivers reflects the hazardous loads they transport and the high level of skill they demonstrate in moving these materials safely.

9. Hazmat Drivers

Salary: $65,466 

As mentioned earlier, hazmat drivers have to be  on high alert. Their loads consist of dangerous and highly toxic materials. Any accident has a high potential to spark a disaster leading to loss of life, lengthy and expensive clean-up, and lost profits for the driver and company. Hazmat drivers must also pass a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) background investigation,  maintain additional endorsements, and  follow additional state and federal regulations. 

Because of the need for specialized equipment  and the additional risks and requirements associated with transporting hazardous materials, hazmat drivers typically earn a substantially higher salary than drivers operating a standard dry van, reefer, or flatbed unit.

Drivers who want to earn more in the trucking industry, go above and beyond the norm to acquire in-demand skills and endorsements that open new and lucrative doors for their careers. But it’s important to keep in mind that these are only averages for a CDL truck driver salary/pay, which means that the data includes individuals at all stages of their careers and in all types of trucking.

How Much Can a Truck Driver Make at Swift?

The short answer is: It varies based on the type of freight you haul, your length of haul, and your experience level. And, because we use a sliding pay scale based on experience and length of haul, the more experience you have, and the more dispatched miles you run, the higher your pay may be.

The salary of a truck driver in the United States is the envy of Russia and other CIS countries. At the same time, overseas, there is another, higher cost of living. So how much do drivers in America earn? This article is a detailed overview of income as well as other details about driving jobs.

How to become a truck or bus driver

The driver’s job requirements depend on the type of vehicle he will be driving: a small van, a truck for local or long distance transportation (truckers), a passenger bus, etc. However, despite certain differences in requirements, the basic criteria are nevertheless the same. Let’s look at them using the example of a truck driver for local transportation within a state or a single city.

So, the requirements for hiring a local truck driver depend on the size and weight of the vehicle. Higher education is not required. For larger vehicles, the ability to drive a truck and have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is usually the primary criteria. CDLs are divided into three categories: class A, class B and class C.

1. Class A license covers large trucks, incl. tractors.
2. Class B license allows you to drive medium trucks, vans and large passenger buses.
3. Class C licenses are for relatively small vehicles, including passenger buses and some delivery trucks.

Most truck driver jobs require a professional CDL driver’s license. At least minimal truck driving experience would be a plus.

Since different states have different requirements for obtaining a driver’s license, the first step in finding a job as a truck driver is to check local license requirements. Knowing in advance which license you will need will help you in your job search. In addition, having CDL approval will allow you to apply for more jobs.

CDL certifications include permission to operate fuel trucks and other trucks carrying hazardous materials.

Responsibilities and qualifications

As for work responsibilities, everything is clear with this. The driver will need to:

• Carry goods on a predetermined route or schedule.
• Work in a specific region, either in one region/state, or in transportation throughout the country.
• Document all deliveries and shipments.
• Follow all relevant safety regulations.

Additional requirements include:

• Consent to undergo a medical and drug test.
• Ability to work in shifts over 10 hours.

Local Haul Truck Driver Salary

As of May 2021, the average driver salary in the US is $51,355 per year, according to job site Ziprecruiter.com. This is approximately 24.69dollars an hour, $988 a week, or $4,280 a month.

Income fluctuates between 23,500 and 73,000 dollars. At the same time, the bulk of salaries for local truck drivers currently range from $39,500 to $59,000. The highest paid employees (10% of the richest) earn an average of $68,000 per year.

The average salary range for a driver varies greatly (by $19,500). This suggests that there are many opportunities for promotion and salary increases, which depend on the level of qualification, work experience and place of residence.

Truck driver income

As of May 2021, the monthly salary of a truck driver in America is $6,864. This equates to approximately $39.60 an hour, $1,584 a week, or $82,366 a year.

Working as a truck driver in the US is attractive to many labor migrants, primarily due to high salaries. How Much Truckers Get Paid

Ground transportation accounts for more than 70% of total trucking in the US, so the job of a truck driver is highly sought after and highly respected. Anything is transported on trucks: from consumer goods to oversized cargo, including entire cottages!

According to Bureau of Labor statistics, American truckers earn between $30,000 and $90,000 a year on average. Considering that $100,000 is considered a good annual income for a family of three, an experienced driver can let his wife not work.

Driver Qualifications

Good health, stamina, and physical fitness are important requirements for employment in American transportation companies. Spending long hours behind the wheel is not so easy, so passing a medical examination is the first thing that employers require from truckers.

Age restrictions, although not welcomed by law, but behind the scenes exist: drivers from 25 to 30 years old are more likely to drive a truck. Those who are older may not pass because of their health, and young drivers, apparently, are afraid to take them because of lack of experience. At the same time, the law allows you to drive trucks from the age of 21.

Only those who already have a license to drive a passenger car can get a truck driver’s license in the US. A foreigner will first have to pass an exam in order to obtain an American Driver’s License. This process takes from 2 weeks to 9months and costs about $2000. Knowledge of local traffic rules should be accompanied by a good command of English, otherwise you will not be able to pass the exam.

If the driver frequently violated the rules or was guilty of an accident, information about this is stored in the police database for 3 years. During this period, carrier companies will most likely refuse to work for the driver, and the insurance company will not provide insurance or set a high rate.

Truck equipment in America causes a lot of envy. The cabin has not only a bed, but also a shower, toilet, refrigerator and air conditioning. Given these conveniences, solo truck drivers prefer to save on apartment maintenance and live right in the cab.

The main routes are equipped with a large number of service stations. Therefore, to become a trucker, it is not necessary to be a good mechanic. It is the responsibility of the driver only to check the wheels before the trip. Large transport companies organize separate stations with parking and a pit stop for their employees.

In the US, there are separate lanes at gas stations for driving tractors. The fuel in them pumps faster, which allows you to fill a large gas tank in a short time.

Sleep and food are also not in question. The roads are full of cafes and motels, but many still prefer to sleep in cabs. Companies often supply drivers with navigators, satellite phones and beacons, even a beginner. Therefore, those who do not know the roads will be able to find the right path or, in case of danger, ask for help.

Personal qualities of drivers

Judging by Hollywood films, a truck driver in the USA is a bearded man who is over 30 years old. In fact, this profession is now much younger. You can get a driver’s license in some states at the age of 18. But transport companies prefer not to hire employees under the age of 25.

The female truck driver is also slowly becoming the norm. Thanks to the power steering, even a fragile person can easily handle the steering.

The habit of seclusion has a positive effect on truckers. Such a person will not experience constant oppression from silence and the monotonous appearance of the roadway.

A strong physical condition is more needed for those who carry light loads within the state. In this case, the driver often performs the role of forwarder and loader at the same time.

An important quality that a truck driver should have is stress resistance. First, he is responsible for the cargo, and the more expensive the cargo. It is all the more terrible that something will happen to him on the road. Secondly, monotony. Before your eyes there is nothing but the track, while driving you won’t particularly admire the beauties of the landscape outside the window. Thirdly, anything can happen on the road. In addition, it is important to maintain a cold mind and clarity of action.

US Forklift Driver

In addition to truckers, large companies are constantly looking for forklift drivers.

Responsibilities:

• loading trucks using a forklift;
• maintaining order in the warehouse and the ability to compactly lay out the current stock;
• checking the accuracy of records;
• compliance with the rules of storage of goods;
• shipment of goods from the warehouse to the loading area;
• accounting for the expiration date of the goods, expired must be sent to a landfill;
• ability to read and write in English.

The duties include not only direct work on the loader, but also the functions of a warehouse worker. The salary in different firms fluctuates from 10 to 15 dollars at an o’clock. This amount does not depend much on the experience of the driver, for a long experience you can get only a small increase.

Where to get training?

There are many courses in the USA offering to teach you how to operate a forklift in a short amount of time. The training will last from 1 to 7 days, depending on the qualification you want to get. Courses cost about $500.

The program includes a theoretical and practical part:

• workplace requirements;
• forklift safety;
• how to check the loader before work;
• how to operate the loader.

You can often find vacancies for forklift drivers on the course website. But despite this, it will be difficult for a beginner to get a job, large corporations prefer experienced workers. If at home you have experience in this field, you still have to undergo training.

Whether experience counts or not depends entirely on the employer. When applying for a job, they may offer to take a practical test, if you can handle it, there is a high probability that you will be accepted.

Before you make the final decision to move to the US to work as a truck driver, think carefully. Assess whether your initial capital is enough for accommodation, meals, tuition fees. Can you live like this.

How GreatSchools steers you toward whiter, more affluent schools

What’s the right way to judge a school?

Across the country, states and school districts have devised their own systems of letter grades and color-coded dashboards based on test scores and graduation rates. But arguably the most visible and influential school rating system in America comes from the nonprofit GreatSchools, whose 1-10 ratings appear in home listings on national real estate websites Zillow, Realtor.com, and Redfin. Forty-three million people visited GreatSchools’ site in 2018, the organization says; Zillow and its affiliated sites count more than 150 million unique visitors per month.

GreatSchools’ stated mission is to help all parents, especially those who are low-income, make more informed decisions about where to send their children to school.

But GreatSchools ratings effectively penalize schools that serve largely low-income students and those serving largely black and Hispanic students, generally giving them significantly lower ratings than schools serving more affluent and more white and Asian students, a Chalkbeat analysis found.

And yet, according to GreatSchools’ own data, many schools serving low-income, black, and Hispanic populations are doing a good job helping students learn math and English. But those schools still face long odds of getting an above-average rating on GreatSchools — likely because their students are arriving far behind.

The result is a ubiquitous, privately run school ratings system that is steering people toward whiter, more affluent schools. A recent preliminary study found that as the site rolled out an earlier version of its ratings, areas with highly rated schools saw increases in home prices and rises in the number of white, Asian, and better-educated families. After three years, the study found, property values in those areas increased by nearly $7,000, making it more difficult for low-income families to buy into the areas.

As parents decide on where to live, “these scores really were on the top of the list of almost all of the parents that I talked to,” said Sharique Hasan, the Duke researcher who authored the study of GreatSchools. “They wanted to be in a school district with schools that were rated a 9 or a 10.”

GreatSchools revamped its ratings in 2017. Chalkbeat’s analysis shows that the correlation with demographics has declined somewhat as a result of the shift — but is still substantial.

GreatSchools rejects the notion that its ratings contribute to segregation. “On the contrary, we believe that information drives equity. Parents, especially low income parents, deserve to know how their schools are doing,” said its CEO Jon Deane. “There are real issues at play here, but keeping parents informed, so that they can act on behalf of their children, isn’t the issue.”

Here is the paradox at the heart of GreatSchools ratings: They are available to all, which means they can help low-income families choose a school or pressure officials to make improvements. But they can also help affluent families cement access to areas other families cannot afford, while bolstering stereotypes that schools in certain neighborhoods are uniformly of poor quality.

“I think GreatSchools has a lot of responsibility to think deeply about how their platform is being utilized or not in relation to patterns of segregation,” said Francis Pearman, a Stanford professor who has studied the relationship between school choice and housing. “The notion that a quality school is necessarily one that is white and affluent is a problematic stance.”

Two decades in, GreatSchools rates public schools in every state

When Bill Jackson started GreatSchools in 1996 as a project of a Silicon Valley business association, he personally visited schools in the Bay Area and talked to principals about how their schools worked.

“We wanted to build a public appetite for a view of school quality based on a school’s own conception of what’s important,” Jackson told Education Week in 1999, a year after the organization became an independent nonprofit.

As GreatSchools expanded, first across California and then nationwide, that approach proved unsustainable. Fortuitously, the organization gained a new source of information: test scores for nearly every public school in the country, thanks to new requirements in federal education law. “The passage of the No Child Left Behind Act put a lot of wind in the sails of GreatSchools,” Jackson, who served as CEO until 2016, says now.

Around the same time, charter schools and other school choice policies were gaining traction. More choices meant information about school quality was more valuable — and sparked concerns that such information might be most accessible to well-connected parents.

By democratizing that information, which otherwise might have lived only in unwieldy spreadsheets on government websites, “GreatSchools had intentions to provide some equity,” said Janelle Scott, an education professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

GreatSchools also partnered with real-estate websites, starting with Zillow in 2012, to embed its ratings, since schools are often crucial in homebuying decisions. GreatSchools, a nonprofit, draws a licensing fee from those partnerships, which accounts for less than 20% of its revenue, according to a spokesperson. Most of its funding comes from philanthropic dollars, including foundations supportive of school choice.

The Walton Family Foundation, for instance, has poured nearly $25 million into GreatSchools since 2004, citing the need to help low-income families choose among schools and advocate for better ones. (Walton is also a funder of Chalkbeat.)

At the same time as GreatSchools was growing, all the new data from state tests had kicked off debates across the country about how to use it. Proficiency rates don’t take into account where students started, or how much schools helped them learn. Researchers developed ways to isolate the “value added” by a school, but those metrics proved controversial too, because they also rely on test scores, can be difficult to understand, and may bounce around from year to year.

Jackson recalled experimenting with different approaches, including directly accounting for poverty. But this didn’t resonate with families: “I’ll never forget one parent in Redwood City when we did a focus group who said, ‘So you mean this is a good school for poor kids?’”

So proficiency rates would remain the primary ingredient in the GreatSchools formula — which meant most schools serving students from low-income families would continue to rate poorly.

Jackson, though, said the organization did try to ensure the ratings got into the hands of less-affluent families. In addition to real estate websites, GreatSchools ratings are embedded on GoSection8, a site for people using federal housing vouchers. GreatSchools says that its own website is fully accessible in Spanish, is written in an easy-to-understand manner, and allows for clear comparisons among nearby schools. Some of this came on the advice of Innovate Public Schools, an advocacy group that works with low-income families and has supported the growth of charter schools.

GreatSchools also sees itself as a tool for those parents to demand better from their schools and their school systems. Jemima Hernandez, a San Jose parent, uses GreatSchools ratings to recruit parents as a volunteer for Innovate.

When families see the often-low ratings their children’s schools get, “They can’t believe it,” she said. “Then they start to talk to you.”

But GreatSchools was dogged by criticism that its scores were crude measures of school quality that penalized schools for serving low-income students.

When the organization overhauled its ratings in 2017, it included a host of new metrics. A GreatSchools representative said at the time that the new ratings would “more accurately reflect what’s going on in a school besides just its demographics.”

It was a striking acknowledgement of the flaws in the prior system. The new ratings also marked the start of a new approach for GreatSchools.

Across several cities, GreatSchools ratings give schools with whiter, wealthier students a clear leg up

Two years into this new system, Chalkbeat took a closer look.

We examined the ratings of elementary and middle schools in Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Indianapolis, Nashville, New York City, Phoenix, and San Francisco, combined with several of each city’s suburbs.

The results are striking. On average, the more black and Hispanic students a school enrolled, and the more low-income students it served, the lower its rating.

The average 1-10 GreatSchools rating for schools with the most low-income and most black and Hispanic students is 4 to 6 points lower than the average score for schools with the fewest black and Hispanic students and fewest low-income students.

In most places, only a tiny fraction of schools with the most low-income and most black and Hispanic students score a 7 or better, the number that earns an “above average” label from GreatSchools. (New York City was a notable exception. There, a relatively large number of predominantly black and Hispanic schools — particularly charter schools and especially Success Academy schools — earned above-average ratings.)

Chalkbeat focused on metro areas because families tend to choose schools and homes locally. GreatSchools argues that only statewide comparisons are appropriate; in six states where GreatSchools provided data, a substantial connection between student poverty and school ratings remained — though in some cases it was smaller than the connection in the metro area Chalkbeat focused on in the same state.

Chalkbeat’s analysis also confirmed that the ratings’ connection with demographics is weaker than it was a few years ago, thanks to new factors included in the ratings. The most notable addition, for schools in states that calculate it, is test score “growth,” or how much students progress in a year compared to others who started at a similar level. Most researchers say growth scores are a more accurate way to measure a school’s performance, and accounting for growth is also where schools serving students who arrive behind can shine.

“The ability to look at growth, college readiness, equity — these subratings that we have — really helped elevate schools that have higher [low-income] populations,” said Deane, GreatSchools’ CEO.

Differences by race and income persist, though, and they are quite large. Probably in part because many schools serving low-income students of color are genuinely struggling. But it remains difficult even for seemingly successful schools serving many low-income black and Hispanic students to score well, too.

Take Denver’s Knapp Elementary School, where most students are Hispanic and come from low-income families. Educators there describe Knapp as a collaborative place where they are respected and asked to push themselves to help students, nearly two thirds of whom are learning English as a second language.

Knapp has won statewide accolades for its ability to help its students improve on state tests. By fifth grade, Knapp’s share of students reading on grade level is higher than the district’s.

Principal Shane Knight, who is in his seventh year at Knapp, is proud of the school’s environment and its academic success. “If you come into Knapp, you feel that level of genuine care for kids,” he said.

Under GreatSchools’ formula, Knapp is rewarded for its students’ growth, earning a 9 out of 10 in that category. But overall, Knapp still earns a 4 — and a “below average” label.

On real estate websites featuring GreatSchools, users encounter the overall score, not the details. And if you type Knapp’s ZIP code into GreatSchools’ search bar, the school won’t even appear initially, because the site prioritizes schools with higher overall ratings. The schools that do show up are in a different Denver ZIP code and in most cases have whiter, more affluent student bodies.

Knapp fares poorly on two other, less widely used third-party rating sites too. SchoolDigger gives the school 2 of 5 stars, while Niche awards it a C. Those sites don’t consider student growth at all.

The low ratings frustrate Knight, who worries families who might help integrate the school will overlook it.

“Are you going to choose a house in the neighborhood where Knapp is? Maybe if the rating is good, but if the rating’s poor, I’m going to look to a different neighborhood,” he said.

Why is Knapp’s rating mediocre? GreatSchools’ formula.

Growth, where Knapp scored a 9, counts for only about 25% of its overall rating. Proficiency rates remain the biggest factor: 45%. There, Knapp earns a 3, because most of its students don’t meet the proficiency bar on state tests.

The rest of the formula isn’t even based on Knapp’s students. That’s the “equity” score, which is supposed to gauge test score gaps within a school. But Knapp is too homogenous — racially and economically segregated — for an equity rating to be calculated, GreatSchools explains. So the site assigns it the average equity rating of other schools in the state with similar proficiency rates: a 2, which counts for nearly 30% of Knapp’s overall rating. (Carrie Goux, a spokesperson for GreatSchools, said about one in 10 schools nationally receive such adjusted equity ratings.)

In a sense, GreatSchools penalizes Knapp for being segregated, even as GreatSchools ratings could make it more difficult for the school to attract a diverse student body.

Knapp is not alone in the Denver area. Among 88 schools that serve predominantly low-income, black and Hispanic students, just one scored above average on GreatSchools’ overall rating; looking at growth alone, 25 of them scored above average. That likely reflects the fact that low-income students of color arrive to school with lower achievement levels due to numerous factors, including the effects of poverty and racism.

Knapp’s scores highlight the challenges that high-poverty schools face in attaining a high rating, but also GreatSchools’ difficult balancing act. Some argue that proficiency should be a major factor in school ratings, as it is now in the GreatSchools formula, to hold all students to high standards.

Goux, the GreatSchools spokesperson, said the organization works to ensure all facets of school performance are visible. “We have displayed the sub-ratings prominently so parents can see how schools are doing across several important measures,” she said, pointing to data showing that these sub-ratings are widely viewed on GreatSchools’ site. “We know parents engage with the sub-ratings and are looking past the Summary Rating to understand schools on multiple levels.”

Goux also said that school searches can be easily adjusted across a number of dimensions — including distance and academic growth — to match a user’s interests.

Finally, she pointed to six schools in other cities that have a high share of low-income students and also earn high ratings. Most of these examples, though, are atypical in that they require at least some students to perform at a certain academic level to enter or remain enrolled.

Tomas Monarrez, an education researcher at the Urban Institute, says GreatSchools’ approach doesn’t provide an accurate picture of how a school is performing. The enduring connection between poverty and GreatSchools ratings in Denver and beyond “is evidence that these measures of school quality are contaminated.”

“Are these schools good because they are actually providing value for these kids?” he said of highly rated schools. “Or are these schools just enrolling more privileged populations?”

GreatSchools now — and in the future

What GreatSchools shows users matters, because millions encounter the ratings each year in their search for homes and schools, both on GreatSchools’ site and on real-estate sites.

Alex Robinson is among them.

She used the website to pick a new school for her son, a second grader; it helped her realize that a charter school she hadn’t considered was a short drive from her home in South Los Angeles. The school was rated a 5, whereas many other schools in the area scored only a 1, she said, and her son is doing well after the switch.

“GreatSchools ended up being my best resource,” said Robinson.

Other research has shown that GreatSchools ratings can affect where families who receive housing vouchers choose to live — an indicator that low-income families are using the scores to pick schools, too. Families offered GreatSchools ratings ended up in areas where schools earned an average rating of 4, as opposed to 3.7, a modest but real improvement.

The study, and Robinson’s story, are victories for GreatSchools, which argues that it offers a nuanced overview of school quality that is accessible to all families.

Still, labeling schools in poor communities and communities of color as bad could make it even tougher to create integrated schools, which research has found benefit students. “Segregation operates through stigma,” said Genevieve Siegel-Hawley, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University who studies race and education.

Plus, there’s the research showing that the expansion of GreatSchools across the country has made residential segregation somewhat worse. (Notably, though, that study was done prior to the ratings shift in 2017, and there does not appear to be any research that looks specifically at GreatSchools’ effect on school segregation.)

“We show that broader access to information increased segregation because high-income families could more readily leverage school ratings to move to neighborhoods with better schools,” wrote researchers Sharique Hasan and Anuj Kumar. “In this case, knowledge was indeed power, but only for the powerful.”

Of course, there are many other powerful, longstanding forces in the way of more integrated schools.

A primary one is entrenched residential segregation, the product of government policies that have restricted who can live where and who can accumulate wealth. Potential changes to enrollment rules and school zone lines that would integrate schools often prompt backlash from more advantaged parents. Racism and bias may stop white families from choosing schools with more students of color.

While the Fair Housing Act forbids real estate agents from steering potential homebuyers of different races to different neighborhoods, a recent Newsday investigation found that many agents on Long Island were doing just that, sometimes using schools as a vehicle to do so.

These issues long predate GreatSchools. Still, some lawyers consulted by Chalkbeat said the fact that the GreatSchools ratings are so correlated with race raises questions about whether their use by real estate companies could run afoul of the Fair Housing Act, because the ratings effectively nudge families away from communities with more black and Hispanic residents.

“It’s a legal gray area,” said Morgan Williams, the general counsel for the National Fair Housing Alliance. “I would discourage real estate service providers from providing information that may be used as a proxy for the racial demographics of a neighborhood.”

(Spokespeople for both Zillow and GreatSchools said their respective sites encourage families to look at multiple factors and visit schools in person; a spokesperson for Realtor. com said the ratings are among many data points it offers to homebuyers.)

Yet even some critical of GreatSchools say it would not serve parents to eliminate or obscure  data about school performance.

“Making that information easier to attain enables [parents] to isolate themselves more if they wish to do so, which is worrisome,” Monarrez of the Urban Institute said. “But I would also be worried about taking that possibility and saying that’s a reason for information not be put out there at all.”

Could GreatSchools do things differently? It could put more weight on growth. There are some signs that families would choose more integrated schools and districts if offered that information.

Myron Long, who is starting a charter school in Washington, D.C., says emphasizing growth measures can shift widely held perceptions of schools serving students of color. “It changes the narrative behind schools and how we talk about them,” he said. “It has the opportunity for parents to see there are more options in the schools that they choose. ”

But that approach has its own drawbacks. Several states, including California, don’t calculate growth scores, impeding efforts to make ratings depend on them more. And encouraging more affluent families to go to high-performing schools in low-income neighborhoods could have unintended consequences, such as displacing other students.

Meanwhile, any changes could anger affluent communities that have benefited through property values from the way the ratings are currently calculated. Changes could also encourage skepticism among those with deeply ingrained notions, perhaps biased ones, about what is and isn’t a quality school. That could mean GreatSchools loses credibility with a powerful constituency of families.

For its part, GreatSchools says it remains engaged with questions about how to measure school quality.

Last month, dozens of researchers and policymakers gathered at MIT to talk about school choice. Several speakers made the same point: Judging a school’s quality by looking at overall student performance is misleading.

Usually, school ratings say more about peers than schools, MIT Professor Parag Pathak told the audience. “That may actually end up further segregating schools,” he said.

“Peer ‘quality’ is not school quality,” Josh Angrist of MIT explained later.

Watching from the audience was Deane, GreatSchools’ CEO. His takeaway? “A strong reinforcement” of data that shows how much students learn over time, he told Chalkbeat.

“The question is, are we moving in the right direction towards providing the information that is going to give us a broader picture?” he said. “We feel an incredible responsibility to provide that information to the users as best we can. So of course we’re going to continue to evolve.”

• Many residents of Los Angeles advise newcomers to try to find an apartment in the area that you will most often need to be during your day-to-day routine, as the public transport isn’t very reliable, or affordable. If you don’t do this, you may spend a good portion of your day commuting.

• Rent prices are generally high. The most expensive areas for housing are Santa Monica, Venice, and Beverly Hills. In general, better rental prices can be found in San Fernando Valley (or just ‘the Valley’ for the locals.

“The locals here avoid the most touristy beaches and instead prefer beaches like El Matador, Cabrillo, Topanga and Abalone Cove. These are great ways to relax in this busy city without having to deal with huge crowds of tourists.”

Top School Districts in California, 2021

California is a huge state of over 39.5 million people and nearly 1000 school districts, many of which are among the largest school districts in the country. Therefore, to be named one of the top public school districts in the state is a significant honor. Let’s take a closer look at five school districts that truly distinguished themselves among the Golden State’s many hundreds of school systems.  

The top public school district in California is Acalanes Union High School District, consisting of four high schools in Contra Costa County. Acalanes’ four schools are all accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and boast a tradition of exceptional academic performance: each ranks in the top 6 percent of high schools in California on the Academic Performance Index.  

Laguna Beach Unified is California’s 2nd best public high school district. The district’s Laguna Beach High School has earned AP Honor Roll designation for increasing AP access, and its students excel in areas outside of academics as well, indicated by 100% participation in arts and athletics. 

Earning the #3 spot is Piedmont Unified School District. The district is made up of seven schools in the city of Piedmont, which is completely surrounded by Oakland. PUSD students achieve some of the highest scores in the state on standardized tests, and over 95 percent of graduates go on to enroll in higher education.   

Like California’s top school district, #4 Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District is comprised solely of high schools in the San Jose area. Both of the district’s two schools are exceptional, boasting a 97% graduation rate and student test scores well above state averages in math and language arts. 

San Marino Unified School District is California’s 5th best school district. A small district compared to others on the list, SMUSD comprises two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district’s schools have earned numerous honors and recognitions, and all are Blue Ribbon Award winners?.

The following variables contributed to the ranking: number of students (K-12), graduation rate, school funding per student, student to teacher ratio, percent of students scoring above proficient in standardized state Math test, percent of students scoring above proficient in standardized state Reading and Language test. Data from a total of 10,247 public school districts were used to compute a score for each school district. The following states were omitted due to lack of sufficient data: Hawaii, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Utah, and Virginia. Note that high schools in some states have their own independent districts.

It was founded in 1865 and is part of the Society of Jesus. It is the oldest continuously operating educational institution in Southern California. ^[7] The school began in Lugo Square in 1865 as St. Vincent’s College at the behest of the Bishop of Los Angeles. Thaddeus Amat. After moving to Hill Street in 1869 and Grand Avenue in 1889, the Vincentius Fathers turned control of the school over to the Society of Jesus in 1911 and it moved to 52 Avenue in Highland Park as a Los Angeles College preparatory school. In 1917, the school moved to its current location on Venice Boulevard after copper magnate and Irish philanthropist Thomas P. Higgins helped allocate land for the school.

The following year the college was renamed Loyola College in honor of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. Until 1929, the campus housed a college, law school, and high school. At that time, the Jesuits purchased additional property to house the college, and separate facilities were purchased for Loyola Law School west of downtown Los Angeles. The college, now Loyola Marymount University, was relocated to the area now known as Westchester in West Los Angeles. ^[8]

Recent development of the school’s campus occurred in the 1980s: a gym, jogging track and swimming pool, as well as additional teaching facilities were built after the administration received large donations. ^[9] A $30 million renovation with donations from the William Hannon Foundation, the Ardolph family, and others provided a new science building, counseling and student centers, additional classrooms, and a central plaza. ^[10] which have been in operation since June 2007 when construction began on the new Xavier Centre. The on-campus Hannon Theater with a large stage serves students along with actors from all over Southern California. ^[11]

Admission

Loyola High School’s starting point of entry is 9th grade, with various transfer opportunities offered in 10th and 11th grades. The transition to the upper classes is not allowed, except in rare cases. Admission is based on the results of standardized tests; recommendations from the candidate’s teachers, headmaster and minister; participation in extracurricular activities; personal statement; and varieties.

Loyola draws its students from all over Los Angeles, from Pacific Palisades to East L.A., from Pasadena to San Pedro, from South Bay as well as San Fernando, San Gabriel, Santa Clarita, and Hidden valleys. Nearly 50% of students are African American, Hispanic and Asian, contributing to the school’s ethnic and socioeconomic diversity. ^[10]

Approximately 800 students apply each year for 310 freshman class seats. ^{[12] [13]}

Curriculum

Four years each of Social Studies and English Language Studies are required courses, along with three years of Foreign Language Studies and Science, and one year of Visual Arts. The eight semesters of theology are also a central part of the curriculum, covering Holy Scripture, Systematic Theology, Catholic Social Thought, Moral Theology and one elective. Extended placement courses are offered across 25 subject areas with a historical “success” rating of almost 80%, ^[14] and students are encouraged to take a large number of electives in addition to the required courses. Loyola also offers over 19 Honors Courses. ^[15] Ninety-six percent of Loyola graduates attend a four-year college. ^[10]

Loyola sent 23 students to USC in 2014, representing 18% of enrollments: Loyola’s enrollment was the best of all schools. ^[16]

In 2017, among 153 private high schools in the Los Angeles metro area, Nisha ranked Loyola 13th in college readiness, and among 52 Catholic high schools, 2nd overall. ^[17] rated A+. ^[18] In addition, according to Nisha, Loyola is the best school for boys.

Since the 1970s, Loyola students have contributed over a million hours of community service. As part of their commitment to teaching men for and with others, ^[10] Loyola students participate in four major service-oriented projects during their high school years. Freshmen serve as tutors on the Loyola campus for award-winning high school entrance exam prep projects for 8th (October – January) and 7th graders (February – April), as well as helping with Special Olympics. The second and third service projects include a minimum of 25 hour service projects during each sophomore and junior year. The Senior Service Project is a minimum of 85 hours of immersion in a non-profit service organization in January of a senior year. Inner city elementary schools, special education schools, hospitals, hospices, orphanages, and soup kitchens are preferred locations for this service experience. Now, at 29In its ninth year of existence, Project Senior Services was featured on “Making A Difference” on the NBC National News program hosted by Brian Williams on March 11, 2010. The video is available on Loyola and NBC. Loyola student community activities feature regularly on ABC affiliate Channel 7 local news programs, including Kool Kids and a car wash run on behalf of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, a gang reform program founded by Greg Boyle, a Loyola alumnus and former faculty member.

Loyola sponsors one of LA’s premier community service fairs during the third week of September each year, with more than 100 local agencies, centers, schools and organizations sending representatives to recruit Loyola students as volunteers. This event supports all school service and justice education programs and aims to support a more informed choice of service by students.

Several times a year, the Cubs Urban Plunge program in Los Angeles is offered to students and faculty to get to know the community from a perspective of the poor, disenfranchised, and marginalized. This is one of Loyola’s distinctive programs. However, the only high school in Los Angeles, public or private, to offer such a program, students serve in a number of shelters and centers through this three to four day program. Beginning in June 2007, Loyola began a hands-on out-of-office service program with a two-week immersion in New Orleans. The 2008 program invited Loyola students to the Appalachians, centered in Wheeling and Charleston, West Virginia. In July 2008, Loyola launched its diplomatic service in Puebla and Cholula, Mexico. In June 2009, Loyola began a five-week academic exchange and service immersion with Colegio Del Salvador, a Jesuit high school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Summer Service Immersion Program 2009included student, faculty, and staff service groups in New Orleans/Slidell, Louisiana in mid-June and another student, staff, alumni, and parent group in Lima and Cusco, Peru, in late July and earlier. August. The 2010 Service Immersion Program included an agricultural program in the Salinas Valley in Northern California and an extended urban dive in Los Angeles in mid-June. In 2010, Loyola again hosted the six-week Argentina Intercambio program in Buenos Aires, which was expanded to include nine days in metropolitan Montevideo, Uruguay. Intercambio is held with Jesuit counterparts in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santa Fe, Montevideo, Uruguay. The founder of the company was David Peha. In the 1977/78 school year, the school was located in a rented building at the address: Temple on Wilshire Boulevard. It had about 450 students from grades 4 to 8. However, the Temple building did not meet the LAUSD earthquake standards, so next, 1978–79, the school was moved to a disused building on the Hamilton High School campus. Also added 9th grade.

  Beginning with the 1979/80 school year, the school was moved, this time to a closed campus of a Catholic school in Pico and Arlington in downtown Los Angeles, which was purchased by LAUSD. The original classroom building at the Catholic school was demolished and classroom bungalows were installed. LACES continued to add a grade until reaching grade 12 in the 1981/82 school year. The first edition of LACES took place on June 1982 years old.

  LACES remained on the Pico and Arlington site until they moved to their current location, the former Louis Pasteur High School, after the school board voted to close Pasteur in 1986. ^[15] Pico and Arlington Site currently used by Pio Pico Elementary and High School since 1987.

  LACES was renovated between 1995 and 2004 with a new gym. The new gym includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, weight room, locker rooms and an indoor gym. The school was also expanded with a new football field, tennis courts and other physical education facilities. These changes have been discussed and expected since the beginning of 1990s. Construction of the elevator for the Language Arts Building began in the fall of 2008 and was completed in the fall of 2014. ^{[ citation needed ]}

  Student racial statistics for 2014-2015

  In 2010, the NBC reality show School Pride chose LACES to be the subject of an episode. The show’s producers and sponsors provided landscaping and repainting (drawing criticism from some who thought the bright blue and yellow exterior was reminiscent of an IKEA store), as well as cosmetic work for the music and art rooms, auditorium, and food kitchen. ^{[3] [16] [17]}

  In June 2011, students vandalized the school, covered the buildings with manure, lathered the ponds, and spray-painted the walls of the gym. Damage was estimated at $2,000. ^[18]

  In 2013, LACES received the Gaston Caperton Inspiration Award from the College Council in recognition of the school’s efforts to increase access to higher education opportunities for low-income students. ^{[19] [20]}

  In 2018, 2 new science rooms were added to the south side of the blue building. They added new sinks, tables, better lighting and more boards. Outside, they also added new lockers and a water fountain, which has been offline since 2018.

  On March 14, 2018, students took to the school lawn during meals to take part in a nationwide strike against gun violence. Stoneman Douglas: High School Shooting. The students were supposed to stay on the field, but eventually moved to Fairfax Avenue. ^[21]

  Magnet Community School

  Magnet Community School, an elementary magnet school in the arts and humanities, since founded in 1977 ^{[22] [23]} on the Center for Advanced Study campus Los Angeles for about 25 years. ^[22] By October 2002, Community Magnet moved to a new location in Bel-Air. ^[24]

  Athletic

  During the 2013-2014 school year, LACES Boys and Girls Volleyball both won the Los Angeles Division 3 Championship, while Boys and Girls Basketball won the Los Angeles Division 4 Championship. Volleyball for boys, no. 3 seed, win no. 1 seed Rancho Dominguez Prep 3-0. ^[25] Boys Basketball, no. 3 seeds, defeat Rancho Dominguez Prep, no. 1 seed, 49-37. ^[26] Both games were held at the Roybal Training Center.

  Baseball also had a big impact on LACES, winning five championships in six years. Coach Alexis Lopez brought the 2013 and 2015 varsity team to two LA City CIF section championships. Matthew Kanfer (now at Pepperdine) was the team’s MVP in 2015.

  The boy’s tennis team advanced to the semi-finals in 201

  and 2016 CIF Citywide Champion Zack Broadney is coached by Darryl Sher, who is also a Computer Science instructor at LACES Magnet. ^{[27] [28]}

  Other physical sports include: cross country, golf, water polo, football, swimming, and athletics. ^[29]

  In 2018, students held an online vote to determine which video games would be played if the school ever got into esports. In 2020, they created teams for video games.
