Landing a management consultant position at a top firm right out of college can result in a salary package topping $100,000 for the best employees — and more than $200,000 for recent MBAs.

But the first step toward securing such a coveted job is acing the internship. And at many prestigious consulting firms, interns are well compensated from the get-go — especially if they’re working on their MBAs.

Management Consulted, a company that helps candidates land consulting jobs, compiled data on some of the top-paying firms for interns. To determine these figures, it culled through information from clients, spoke with industry insiders, and pored over real offer letters from readers.

With typical internships lasting 10 weeks or more, Management Consulted found that undergraduates can expect to make in excess of $1,000 per week. Meanwhile interns working on their MBAs often command more than twice that amount.

      About the Discovery internship

The Discovery internship is designed to expose freshman and sophomore level summer interns to different client service businesses at Deloitte. These opportunities are designed to help grow your skills, empower your curiosity, and celebrate your versatility. We empower our interns’ desire to expand, explore, and engage by providing cross business exposure, regular training, and continued learning.

Your internship experience will include personalized mentorship, professional training and continuous learning through Deloitte University.

      Learning and networking

Beyond exposure to “real life” projects, the internship also delivers a variety of national and local learning and networking events. In addition, throughout the internship there are ongoing learning events such a lunch and learns, industry/service line spotlights, and regularly scheduled training offerings designed to help you develop technical and client service skills. You will understand first-hand what a career with Deloitte is like and have the opportunity to build a professional network.

      Mentorship and professional development

Our mentors can guide you from internship to potential future employment, by providing resources and attention to help you to turn potential into prowess. Each intern is assigned a mentorship team, including a counselor and onboarding advisor, to help offer guidance throughout the experience. The counselor, typically a manager or senior manager, offers career guidance and feedback throughout the course of the internship. The onboarding advisor is a peer level “buddy” to help answer questions and offer insight into how to make the most of the internship experience.

Additional mentors, both formal and informal, are often typically identified during the internship. These mentor relationships typically carry over into the future and offer a great way to stay connected to Deloitte while back at school.

There will be formal goal setting and evaluation process throughout the internship. Sophomore Discovery interns may have the opportunity to receive a client service internship at the conclusion of the Discovery Internship Program.

      NextGen Leaders Program

As a Discovery Intern, you will have the opportunity to be part of the NextGen Leaders Program. Program participants at the sophomore level are eligible for a scholarship paid at the start of the internship. Freshman who join the Discovery internship will be eligible to receive the scholarship if they matriculate to the program as a sophomore.

      Eligibility

We look for candidates who successfully manage strong academics with extracurricular activities.

      • Freshman or sophomore standing in a four-year institution pursing a Bachelor’s degree in a business, accounting, economics, STEM, or a related field
      • Strong academic credentials (preferred minimum GPA of a 3.2 at the end of the academic year)
      • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
      • Effective interpersonal and communication skills; adaptive to change; creativity & self-confidence, leadership qualities, team-oriented, and collaborative

The Discovery Internship is open to all eligible freshman and sophomore students. Because of our desire to have a diverse slate of candidates, students who identify as a member of either traditionally underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups within the professional services industry (Black or African-American, Hispanic or Latinx, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, or two or more races), are encouraged to apply.

The highest-paying internships in the U.S. offer salaries that nearly double the national average — but there’s a catch

We often associate internships with hours of unpaid labor, but as backlash has risen over the years, more and more companies have begun providing their interns with livable wages. And according to a recent Glassdoor report on the 25 highest-paying internships in the U. S., a few of these companies are offering interns salaries that are nearly double the national average — and, as the study notes, far above the U.S. median salary for full-time work.

To qualify for the list, U.S.-based companies had to have at least 25 reviews on Glassdoor. To come up with the ranking, researchers compiled those companies’ monthly salary reports from March 2018 to February 2019. Accounting for almost half of the final list are tech companies, with Facebook leading the way at $8,000 per month for each intern. Finance and consulting are the second and third most represented industries on the list, with companies like Bank of America, Capital One, and Bloomberg L.P. all offering interns more than $5,800 per month, significantly higher than the national median average of approximately $3,620 per month, as per the Bureau of Labor. Even Boeing, which comes in last, pays interns almost 15 percent more than the average.

Here’s the full list of America’s highest-paid internships, according to the report:

        1. Facebook: $8,000
        2. Amazon: $7,725
        3. Salesforce: $7,667
        4. Google: $7,500
        5. Microsoft: $7,250
        6. Uber: $7,167
        7. Bloomberg L. P.: $7,000
        8. Capital One: $7,000
        9. Apple: $6,667
        10. Bank of America: $5,833
        11. J.P. Morgan: $5,667
        12. Goldman Sachs: $5,367
        13. Viasat: $5,333
        14. Visa Inc.: $5,167
        15. Intel Corporation: $5,000
        16. SAP: $4,833
        17. EY: $4,825
        18. Tesla: $4,667
        19. Deloitte: $4,667
        20. Cisco Systems: $4,667
        21. PwC: $4,500
        22. KPMG: $4,500
        23. Genentech: $4,500
        24. Dell: $4,333
        25. Boeing: $4,167

In addition to high pay, Facebook interns receive benefits including health care, housing, transportation, and weekday meals, according to Glassdoor reports from former and current interns at the social media company. However, while that’s certainly commendable, keep in mind that the hours interns work per month at Facebook typically aren’t full-time. Internship lengths vary at the company depending on the role, ranging from 16 to 24 weeks, according to a Facebook internship job posting.

As for the number of hours during those weeks, that also varies; according to the Johnson and Wales University’s Employer Guide to Structuring a Successful Internship program, the average intern at any company works just 10 to 20 hours per week (the Department of Labor has not outlined the maximum length of an internship, although if it exceeds 40 hours a week, the intern is entitled to overtime pay).

Making anywhere from $24,000 to $48,000 in under half a year is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s a far cry from the $96,000 per year Facebook interns, for instance, would earn in a year if they were to work full-time. It’s possible, though, that interns at Facebook and other companies can end up turning their short-term positions into full-time gigs. According to Amanda Stansell, economic research analyst at Glassdoor, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for employers to find strong talent, so they use high wages, benefits, and perks to attract star interns — and retain them for as long as possible.

        Fizkes/Shutterstock

“With these current labor market conditions [characterized by historically low unemployment rates], there’s intense competition,” she tells Mic. “People who can fill these roles are in short supply so these tech companies are in competition with one another to bid over these people who fit these skillsets. We know that pay is the top consideration, so employers are aware of this and try to have as competitive salaries as possible.

Offering interns higher salaries in the hopes they stay on longer is an investment employers make to offset the cost of rehiring new employees every few years. According to a study from the Society For Human Resource Management’s Human Capital Benchmarking Report, it costs an average of $4,129 to hire a new employee and approximately 42 days needed to fill the position. While large intern salaries might be a considerable upfront cost for employers, they can mitigate the time and money spent on interviewing and training new hires.

And for interns, starting off your professional career with a job that pays well can be not just a financial relief, but an emotional one, too. Negotiating for higher pay can be a stressful experience, so much so that some people avoid it completely; research from Nerdwallet found that only 38 percent of recent graduates negotiate for higher salaries, even though most employers who responded to the survey said they had room for at least five to 10 percent more to offer in their budget. While you can — and should — treat an internship like an entry-level job and ask for more money before signing on the dotted line, starting out with higher pay than you expected can often alleviate the pressures of negotiation.

Of course, while knowing which companies provide the biggest wages may be helpful, it doesn’t mean you can get automatically get a high-paying internship. American unemployment is at an all-time low, meaning there are fewer internship and job openings overall, notes Stansell. This leaves many people looking for high-paying internships out of luck, with no choice but to settle for lower-paying positions — or, unfortunately, ones that are totally unpaid.

        ESB Professional/Shutterstock

The ethics surrounding unpaid internships are hazy; it’s no secret that they’re a classist issue, since it’s often people with inherited wealth or who are being supported by their families who can afford to work for no compensation. Yet unpaid work is technically not illegal. In January 2018, the U.S. Department of Labor issued a test to determine the financial legalities surrounding unpaid internships and decided that an intern is to be considered an employee if they receive training similar to what they’d receive from a teacher, and if their work replaces, as opposed to complements, an employee’s responsibilities. If this is the case, then the intern is entitled to minimum wage plus overtime pay, as well as health care if they work over 30 hours a week, per the Affordable Care Act’s regulations. If the intern is not considered to be an employee, however, they are not entitled to any compensation or benefits.

After a host of corporations were hit with class-action lawsuits outlawing unpaid work over the last decade, the practice has substantially died down, but it still exists — and employers know they can get away with it because people continue to apply for the positions, explains Stansell. There are many reasons for this; perhaps the internship is at a prestigious company, adds value to your resume, or is simply the only available option in the field you’re interested in. If you can afford it, an unpaid internship might not seem like the worst idea.

Yet these positions often don’t actually help you out in the long run. According to a study from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, paid interns who worked at private for-profit companies earned higher wages and got more opportunities later on in their careers, with a median starting salary of $53,521 and a 72 percent job offer rate once their internship concluded. Unpaid interns working at state and local agencies, meanwhile, were paid an average starting salary of $32,969 in entry-level jobs following the conclusion of their internships and were hired for full-time positions only 34 percent of the time.

While unpaid internships are still widely offered to both existing students and college grads, try not to feel cornered into them. As Glassdoor proved with its recent report, it’s possible to get both professional experience and income — you just have to be ready for some fierce competition.

How much a Consultant earns post-MBA?

        A 7 minute read

        Asif M

        Published Feb 28, 2020

Consulting organizations (particularly management consulting firms) are some of the biggest employers of MBA graduates. You don’t need to look further than the latest MBA employment reports to confirm this. Almost a third of the class at top MBA programs chose consulting as their post-MBA career in 2020. However, as the war for MBA talent heats up, the top consulting firms are now not only fighting amongst themselves but also other industries such as finance and technology for MBA graduates. As a result of this, consulting salaries offered to MBAs in 2019-2020 are at record levels.

2-3 years after graduation, when MBAs move into project leader and manager roles, they can expect a base salary of $220,000. At 4-5 years, when MBAs become senior project leaders and associate principals, they can earn up to $ 250,000 – $ 320,000. At the junior partner level base salary further increases to $350,000 – $420,000. And that is not all.

At the senior partner level, you earn upwards of a million dollars annually with base salaries of $450,000-$650,000 and bonuses of $500K+.

In this article, we take a detailed look at consulting salaries earned by MBAs in 2020 and what they can expect in 2020 and beyond.

Here is a brief outline of the article:

        * Data from previous report and current MBA salary data 2020.

Consulting salaries are generally divided into the following components:

        1. Base Salary
        2. Signing Bonus
        3. Performance Bonus
        4. Relocation Bonus

War for MBA Talent increased the Base Salary of Consultants in 2020

Base salary is one of the biggest components of the total compensation package that consultants receive annually. In mid-2019, due to increasing competition for MBA talent from other industries such as Finance and Technology, McKinsey, Bain, and BCG (the MBB firms) increased their base salaries to US$ 165,000 for MBA hires. This is an increase of over $ 12,500 as compared to the 2018 base salary in Consulting.

        Signing Bonus

Signing bonuses are a one-time affair offered to consultants when they sign the contract. In 2020, consulting firms such as McKinsey and PwC and Strategy& have increased signing bonuses by $5,000 as compared to 2018. Similarly, firms like Accenture Strategy and KPMG have increased the singing bonus by $10,000.

        Performance Bonuses

This salary component is used to entice prospective graduates away from the MBB by rival firms. Non-MBB firms use higher pay and other perks to entice prospective MBA graduates further. For e.g. A.T. Kearney matches the MBB in base pay and signing bonuses with up to $44,100 in performance bonuses. Deloitte’s Strategy and Operations practice goes even further by offering full 2nd-year tuition reimbursement to returning interns.

Deloitte’s Strategy and Operations practice goes even further by offering a performance bonus up to $40,000 along with full 2nd-year tuition reimbursement for returning interns. This is in addition to the $185,000. Strategy& go up to $55,400 in terms of performance bonuses.

It is important to note that these bonuses are taxed heavily, and more importantly, the maximum performance bonus figure advertised above goes only to the very best consultants.

Average performing consultants at best make only half of the maximum amount. Another thing to note is that higher pay is often due to the higher costs of living. Thus, you can optimize your take-home pay if you choose an office in a city with a lower cost of living.

With rigorous “up or out” policies at the MBB and other firms, not many management consultants make it to the partner level. However, in the USA, you also receive a pay increase of 12%-20% along with a bump in lifestyle when you leave your consulting job along with a better work-life balance.

Management Consultants who choose to go into the financial services may receive a 30%+ increase in compensation. However, this is often accompanied by a worse work-life balance.

Consulting Salaries offered to MBAs in 2020

Base salaries are subject to a 10-20% increase every year, outpacing compensation growth as compared to other industries – a major point of attraction to consulting careers. These numbers grow more pronounced with each step in a consultant’s career post-MBA.

The average base salary for an MBA in 2020 at top Consulting firms is $157,364. Among the MBB, the difference between total pay offered ranges from $12,500 – $21,250. All three offer a $200K pay-check in the first year itself.

Notably, the highest total pay, as well as the second-largest increase in total compensation, was offered by Strategy&. Booz Allen Hamilton offered the highest growth in total pay – $33,250.

Here is the total Consulting Salary comparison between top consulting firms (2020 vs. 2018):

Employer 2020 Total Pay 2018 Total Pay Difference (Total Pay)
        Accenture Strategy 2,00,000 1,91,900 8,100

        Strategy& 2,23,400 1,94,040 29,360

        The Deloitte Philippines story

Deloitte established its presence in the Philippines in 1997. The company provides audit, business process, financial advisory, risk advisory, and tax solutions through Navarro Amper & Co.

Deloitte Philippines is the local practice of Deloitte Southeast Asia., which is part of Deloitte Asia Pacific and Deloitte Network.

The company is one of the top professional services firms in the country with more than 860 professionals. These employees in Cebu and Taguig cater to different clients in various sectors from consumer to technology industries.

        Culture & Vibe

The biggest challenge for fresh grads would be an unhealthy work-life balance because of long working hours. Some roles like Reputation & Risk Group Junior Associates need to work overtime if necessary.

Overtime work becomes more likely during peak audit seasons every year, depending on a client’s fiscal period. Fresh grads should then brace themselves for hectic schedules.

Despite the challenges of working in a fast-paced environment, insiders said that the top management discourages weekend work. Most employees clock in from Monday to Friday.

Deloitte Philippines has also promoted flexible work arrangements even before the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, current and former employees agree that the company truly cares for its employees.

At Deloitte, you can have a rewarding career on every level. In addition to challenging and meaningful work, we believe in work-life harmonisation and also offer you a friendly work environment where our people take pride in their achievements, the success of others and the quality of their work.

Fresh grads with superb time management skills would find it easy to work for Deloitte Philippines. There’s a lot to learn at a well-known auditing firm, and young new hires should capitalize on this opportunity.

        The Recruitment Process

Fresh grads should expect two interviews with HR and the hiring manager if the company shortlists their online application. Shortlisted candidates for full-time and internship roles should prepare for Zoom video interviews.

Previous applicants appreciated the friendliness of Deloitte Philippines’ HR representatives. While they had a positive interview experience, applicants should still be ready for thought-provoking questions:

        • How will you manage client projects?
        • How do you handle conflict within a team?
        • What do you know about the audit process?
        • What is your weakness that isn’t disguised as a strength?
        • Why did you choose this role instead of a different one?

Deloitte Philippines may take 14 days on average to complete the hiring process. The company only contacts shortlisted candidates, as the company attracts a lot of applicants.

My Summer Internship – Working in Deloitte

Final year Computer Science student Clíodhna Connolly describes the benefits of her internship with Deloitte…

Going into Computer Science in UCD I knew I wanted, at some stage during my degree, to do an internship. I knew I’d have to allot time over one of my summers to try get my hands on one.

The summer of third year was when my efforts of applying finally came to fruition. Applying for internships and even graduate positions can be a lot more time-consuming than most would imagine. It’s not just your academic prowess that companies want to examine but what motivates you, what inspires you, what kind of people do you admire and also why do you want to work for their company. So early into February I applied to Deloitte, a company, at the time, I didn’t really know too much about, nor their technical positions. Shortly after applying I was invited to an hour-long interview in Deloitte HQ where I was interviewed by a department representative about the competencies I had spoken briefly about in my application, (a time when I showed leadership etc.). I was quite happy with how the interview went and a day later I got a phone-call from Deloitte saying I had got the role.  I now had a role as a Technology Consultant Intern lined up for the summer and although I still didn’t know much about what this entailed I was thrilled.

Summer finally rolled around and I found out more about what my internship involved. We had a two-day induction period which helped me a lot to know more about the company I was working for, the work that they do and the work that I’d be doing. My internship was a bit different from what some of the internships my other friends from college were doing. In Deloitte, it’s a very structured internship. At the beginning of June over 140 interns began either 6-week or 12-week placements. I was doing a 12-week placement and after the first 2-days of induction I saw on average only 2 other interns each day.

All of the Deloitte Summer Interns after our first day

I quickly learnt that technology consulting means that you will spend almost all your time on client-site. After two days in HQ, I was moved to Kilmainham where I worked in a Department of Social Protection office for the remainder of my internship. The aim out here was to help the department get more of their services online and they had thus hired consultants to help them achieve this task.

I worked on 2 different teams during my time out in Kilmainham. The first team was working on what was already a very established entity and so my work revolved mostly around testing as the development that was happening was a bit too in depth for me to take up in such a short time frame. After this team, I was moved onto another team where I really got to see much more software development. This team was working on a product that was still actively having major features added to it and so it was possible to give me a lot more development work.

When I originally went to Deloitte I had no web development experience and most of the technologies they were using to develop were entirely new to me. I had never used C# before, which was the primary language used for development, but after a little while spent reading through a beginner’s guide book and reading through the existing code base I had got my head around the majority of it. One thing everyone had told me about internships, although I never really believed them, was that the primary aim was for you to learn. This couldn’t be more true from the experience I had in Deloitte. I was given all the time I needed to familiarise myself with the systems and code they used and members of staff were always more than happy to help explain something if I needed it.

One of the perks of being involved in such a large company and such a large internship program was that there were an awful lot of interesting activities for us to take part in. Almost every Friday afternoon I would be invited back to HQ to be given a talk the other departments in Deloitte, what they do and what kind of people they might be looking for. Beyond this we also had a lot of days focussing on our personal development and to help us plan our careers.  We also had an Impact Day in which the aim is to give back to the community. On this day, myself and a few other interns went and painted apartments of some people with disabilities. Not only was it good to be helping people out but it was also nice to be out of the office for a while and doing something different.

        Intern IMPACT Day

A major asset of my internship at Deloitte was taking part in the Intern Innovation Challenge. At the beginning of our internship all the interns were divided into 44 teams of 4 or 5 and given a title to inspire us to come up with an innovative idea. My team and I were given the title “How to use Technology on Deloitte Engagements” and after listening to the struggles of a tax intern on our team we saw an opportunity for robot process automation to be implemented on the engagements our colleague was working through in order to free up his time for more productive and beneficial work. Somehow, despite our concept being a bit more serious and more difficult to understand than our competitors’ presentations, our group won first place. We had been shortlisted into a list of 8 groups and from there we all had to present to a group of esteemed Deloitte employees consisting of several partners and heads of departments. We were delighted we had won, not only to justify the work we had put in but also because 1st place had a top prize of €1000!

Judging Panel from Intern Innovation Challenge

Overall, my time in Deloitte really highlighted for me how to apply the skills I had already learnt from my degree in UCD but also the skills I should focus some more on during my final year. The problem solving and software development skills I had learnt really stood by me well especially when I was adapting my existing knowledge to working with an entirely new language. The teamwork I had learnt in UCD, especially from my Project Management module, also stood by me as there was not one thing done in Deloitte alone. Unlike in college you are always a part of a group working on a project and it’s important that you already have some skills developed in this area. During one of the Friday afternoon talks I was told more about computer forensics and I found this area to be very interesting and because of this I have tried to incorporate this interest into my module choices in my final semester.

I would highly recommend an internship to anyone considering one. I know it can be difficult as it often clashes with J1s and interrailing etc. but there are real benefits that come from doing one. Both your college life and employment prospects can improve from the skills that you learn and who knows maybe even your internship might roll itself into a full-time graduate position like mine did!

        Deloitte Brand Ambassador

But there is a way to get an internship at Deloitte without pre-screening. This opportunity is offered to students working in the company as brand ambassadors.

What is this position? An active, sociable and preferably self-governing student of the second or third year is engaged in information support for Deloitte at his university and helps with holding various events on its basis. The company provides the Ambassador with:

        • scholarship;
        • free access to the company’s educational resources: trainings, master classes, conferences;

        1. Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation.
        2. HSE.
        3. Russian University of Economics Plekhanov.
        4. MGIMO.
        5. Moscow State University.
        6. RUDN.

        Practice at Deloitte

Students of profile specialties can have an internship in the company. For this you need:

        • send a resume with a motivation letter to the HR department of Deloitte;
        • obtain the consent of the directorate of the relevant department;
        • pass competitive selection;
        • get permission from the dean’s office.

All internships at Deloitte are the same as for student internships.

An example of a Deloitte internship report.

        Internship reviews

Students who managed to become part of the company for a while are satisfied that the tasks in the internship at Deloitte are practice-oriented, and their implementation really teaches the features of the future profession. Staff members often complain about overtime and irregular schedules, but interns do not notice these problems.

The selection of interns at Deloitte, as well as experienced candidates, is quite rigorous and goes far for everyone. First of all, because the company subsequently offers most of its interns to stay at work for the simple reason that it experiences constant staff shortage due to high turnover: many employees cannot withstand eternal overload. So internship at Deloitte is not only a valuable experience, but also an opportunity to start a career in the Big Four while still a student.

Interview with IT consulting internship participant

        1142 June 11, 2020.
        Heading: Interview.

Lev started his career at Deloitte with an Accelerated Career Program summer internship, which he purposefully applied for in 2019. A year later, he is a business analyst in the SAP group, working at the intersection of business, finance and IT!

In this long read, we have collected stories about IT consulting, complex terms, a schematic drawing of the career ladder, and the most sincere impressions of the internship. Yes, yes, all at once!

Tell us how you got on the internship?

In my first year of graduate school, I had enough free time to work full-time, so I started looking for internships with the opportunity to stay on the staff. I found a vacancy in the SAP Group at Deloitte, submitted my resume.

The SAP group implements SAP solutions. In turn, SAP is software with which you can automate the professional activities of representatives of different specializations.

Soon I got a call from a recruiter from the company. I wanted to work specifically in consulting, because consulting, in my opinion, is always something new: every day there are new tasks, new projects. Everything depends on the requirements of the customer.

Face-to-face interview was held in the format of a business game. In general, it seemed to me that getting an internship is quite simple – it is important to show the ability to work with information and an analytical mindset. Everyone is well aware that students and graduates do not have much knowledge in the subject area – this will be taught during the internship.

What department are you in and what do you do?

During the internship, you have time to work in several areas. This is a good opportunity for young employees, as it allows them to understand which direction they like the most.

I, however, did not take advantage of this opportunity: I immediately liked the project I was assigned to. This is a very long project to implement an enterprise data warehouse system based on SAP BW on HANA for a large Russian company. Different legal entities in this company maintain accounting records in different ERP systems. Our system collects data from these systems, transforms it from RAS into IFRS and generates consolidated statements.

ERP is an information system that allows you to store and process most of the data that is critical for the company’s work.

During the internship, I had tasks at different levels of the system. At first I helped other employees with projects, then I even started doing my own developments, of course, under the supervision of senior employees. The main thing is to take the initiative and learn quickly, then the team leader will have confidence that the trainee will be able to complete the tasks.

Are you still studying? Tell us how you manage to combine work and study.

Now I am finishing my second year of master’s degree. There are almost no steam, in my free time I write a diploma. When there were couples, I also had time for them, since we mostly have them after six in the evening.

It sounds like I spend all my time at work, but in fact, there is usually enough time for rest. It seems to me that it is not difficult to combine such work with study, even if study takes more time. You can not work full time, and if necessary, no one will forcibly keep you at work, because everyone understands that studying is more important for now.

When you arrived at Deloitte, did you immediately feel like you belonged? Or did it seem that too much of everything suddenly fell down?

In the first days there were many impressions, I wanted to tell my friends about every detail. It was interesting for me to understand both the subject area and the SAP device. I didn’t have much haste in my tasks. All this helped me to avoid the feeling of uncontrollability of the process.

However, this feeling does happen from time to time. But you can always share your experiences with colleagues. At least I always knew that I could discuss all issues with my team leader.

Was there anything that surprised you that you didn’t expect from the internship at all?

It’s hard to surprise me 🙂

Have you learned something that can be applied in everyday life?

First of all, I gained a lot of knowledge on working with SAP BW and SAP HANA. At the university, I had courses where we studied SAP ERP as users. Now I have gained knowledge and practical skills in the development and construction of a system and database.

In addition, I managed to understand the business component of the system, that is, to understand the basics of accounting and some of the features of logistics. In addition to technical skills, I had extensive experience in interacting with a client in the language of business. The industry highly values professionals who can speak to both business and developers.

Explain to readers the three most obscure words you use at work.

Consignment, Incoterms, balance and other accounting and logistics terms. They had to be studied in order to better understand the subject area of the company’s business processes. As an IT specialist, I was very far from this, but when communicating with a client, it is important to speak his language.

Perhaps the most incomprehensible words are “hkont”, “komok”, “bukrs”. These are the technical names for data items in SAP ERP. These names were introduced a very long time ago, and there is no way to change them. All these are usually abbreviations of German words, in particular, Hauptkonto, Konto Modifikation, Büchungskreise. So knowledge of German was not superfluous?

How transparent do you think Deloitte’s performance appraisal system is?

At Deloitte, all stages of career growth are predetermined, so we can say that the system is objective.

How are your relationships with colleagues? Are there activities to help you get closer?

I was very pleased that there are good and democratic relations between employees at Deloitte. Personally, I feel completely free to communicate with team members and the project manager. It is very important for me.

I think it’s almost impossible to work in a company with a military hierarchy and a toxic atmosphere. Parties are held twice a year in the SAP group, plus once a year a general New Year’s corporate party. This is also very important, as it gives you the opportunity to chat with colleagues outside of working hours.

Is there anything unusual in your office?

Most large companies in Moscow have fairly comfortable offices, and Deloitte is no exception. What I value most in our office is the proximity to the metro (only two minutes from Belorusskaya) and my own canteen – no need to run around the city looking for a free place when everyone has lunch.

The most unusual thing for me was the prayer rooms. It is very pleasant that, regardless of religion, company employees can retire near the workplace for prayer. However, in SAP, not everyone works in the office, most of the projects take place in the offices of clients. For me, this is also a plus, since it does not bother me to go to the same place every day.

        Did your dreams match reality?

To be honest, I think most people have little idea what a SAP consultant is. Also, I did not fully realize what I would do. Therefore, it is difficult to compare with initial expectations. But I definitely liked everything, so I stayed on the staff even after the internship was over.

It’s hard to be an intern – The Vyshka

        The Vyshka

These people study in different courses, at different faculties, but they all have one thing in common: the desire to work and gain new experience. The HSE Special Correspondent, Alexei Malakhovskiy, collected the impressions of HSE students from St. Petersburg about their internships.

Artur Miraev (3rd year student of law school – Jensen Group):

I’ll start with the fact that due to the transition to the bachelor’s program, we have canceled the mandatory practice. In this regard, there was a desire to find an internship on my own. On the advice of my friend, who had already completed an internship, I decided to try my hand at the legal department of Jensen Group. When applying for a job, a resume, interview results are taken into account. And it was also necessary to translate part of the contract from English into Russian and vice versa.

The main advantage of such an internship is that it is accessible to a student who is interested in direct contact with the work of a lawyer. At the same time, without prejudice to studying at the university. In addition, a very flexible schedule and loyal management. Of the minuses, only the symbolic amount of payment for the internship. I remember everything, I can not note something specific. I gained experience in corporate law, both theoretically and practically. Interacted with the Federal Tax Service, notaries. Practiced my legal English. I learned how to work with documentation and, of course, with office equipment.

I would probably consider going to work there after graduation.

Kristina Lokaychuk (4th year student of law school – Deloitte):

I got into the company as a result of the Tax&LegalContestbyDeloitte case game — I became the winner. Speaking about the pros of an internship, it should be noted the opportunity to work together with professionals, experienced lawyers. Despite being very busy, senior colleagues always found time to answer my questions and explain something in more detail. It was very important that I could always discuss the quality of my work – I received valuable comments after almost every assignment. Second, a sense of belonging. When working on projects, you feel like part of a team. You understand that your specific result affects the overall result. Interns in the company are perceived not as cheap labor, but as young professionals who have come for experience. That is why I was trusted to independently carry out a variety of tasks from the very first day of the internship. Last but not least, the company understands and appreciates the importance of continuous professional development. For this reason, there are a large number of internal corporate trainings. The management of the department always shares information about upcoming lectures and seminars by leading lawyers, tax consultants and encourages participation in such events. And, of course, the internship had an impact on my academic success: the understanding of the material studied at the University has now become complete, deep and meaningful. Without practical application it is impossible to master the theory. The most memorable project was the work on an investment agreement between a large foreign automaker, which planned to start production in the Russian Federation, with the government of one of the regions. The contract was signed after the end of the internship, but I was pleased to feel involved in such a grandiose event, no matter how loud it may sound. Of course, there is still a year of study at HSE ahead and I don’t know much about the profession, but the company believed in me and offered to continue working. Therefore, you just have to believe in yourself, not be afraid of anything and get the job-offers of your dreams.

Yulia Smirnova (4th year student of the Faculty of Economics – JTI Petro):

I did an internship at JTI Petro.

I got there after going through a selection process consisting of various tests and two interviews.

I would like to note that in the company they taught me everything, starting with the very basics. We had a great team, and the organization held a lot of useful trainings. I got good work experience in my specialty.

I can’t even name any cons, because for the internship it exceeded all my expectations. I got even more than I originally planned and wanted.

I would not mind continuing to work there after my studies, but at the moment I am already working for another large company.

Sophia Glazunova (4th year student of the Department of Political Science – Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg):

I had an internship in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg in the apparatus of the leader of the Just Russia faction Alexei Kovalev.

I learned about the vacancy from my supervisor, there was also information on the website. I sent my resume and went along with another student. By the way, there were few contestants, as soon as everyone found out that the internship was free, they immediately refused. For me, experience was important, as well as writing a diploma based on practice in the Legislative Assembly.

The main advantage of this practice is the expansion of horizons, in my opinion. Before working in the Legislative Assembly, for example, I did not think about the town planning problems of the city. And since Aleksey Kovalev is a well-known city defender in St. Petersburg, I had to “plunge headlong” into this topic. KGA, KUGI and KZR are not empty abbreviations for me now. During the internship, I studied the case of illegal construction on the Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment and, as a result, wrote a review article, which is now in the apparatus something like a “desk manual” on the case.

Minus – exorbitant work with archives and documents. In the Legislative Assembly, unfortunately, there is no electronic document management. You have to disassemble tons of papers and scan them into a computer. It may not be hard, but it’s boring and not very useful.

Most of all I remember the interview for the collection of memoirs about the archaeologist G.S. Lebedev with the vice-president of the International League for the Defense of Culture M.N. Chiryatiev. The conversation was far from being about politics and not even about the Legislative Assembly, but about the limits of the human mind, about the ability to live and see through the layers of history and culture. And this is perhaps the rarest quality among politicians.

I do not plan to continue working in the Legislative Assembly, there are many other interesting options. But experience is really useful for understanding the functioning of representative power.

Boris Fateev (4th year student of the Faculty of Economics – Hyundai):

I interviewed for a summer internship at 12 companies that I found either on HeadHunter or in the HSE internship brochure. The main question was: is the work paid or not. For me, this is a sign that my work will be useful. Received offers from 3 companies. All of them were from Head Hunter’s list. In many respects, I chose the Hyundai purchasing department.

Among the advantages of my internship, I would like to note the warm friendly atmosphere in the team, the opportunity to deal with real tasks, support and mentoring from colleagues. The supervisors of the internships set me difficult but achievable tasks. And an extensive internship program allowed me to communicate with the same interns as you do. The disadvantages are as follows: the specifics of the company is that the working day starts early – at 8 in the morning. For me, this was not a problem, but rather a plus, I like to work in the morning.

Before Hyundai, I already had experience, including unpleasant. Negative interpersonal relationships usually spoil the experience of internships. Hyundai has no problems with corporate culture. When colleagues are sympathetic to the mistakes of a beginner and strive to help, this is worth a lot and commands respect.

The most important experience I got as a result of my internship in a transnational corporation is the ability to interact correctly and effectively with colleagues and negotiate with counterparty representatives. The ability to communicate with different people greatly increases the efficiency of work, at least at the stage of inclusion in the process.

Of course, I have a desire to work there after university.
