Oak Grove United Methodist Church – Wikipedia

Oak Grove United Methodist Church is located in Chesapeake, Virginia and is known as “the mother of all Methodist congregations in Hampton Roads”. [1] It helped found four more Methodist churches in the area are: United Methodist Congregations, Great Bridge United Methodist, Messiah Methodist Associations, and Oaklett Methodist Associations [1] It is located on the corner of the North Battlefield and Great Parkway Bridge, and was the fourth Methodist church founded in Northampton County. [2] The history of the church dates back to the 1700s and since then many different ministries have been established in the church and it has been declared a historical structure. [3] The Church follows Methodism, a movement started by John Wesley in an attempt to reform the Church of England from within. [4]

[3] [6] The Rev. Francis Asbury, the first American Bishop of the Methodist Church, preached at Caterell House in 1800. [7] [8] In 1804, Bennett and Ginny Armstrong sold one half acre of land for the construction of the temple, and in 1808 the building for the new Caterell Meeting House was built here. [3] [9] [10]

In 1840, Caterell Meeting House became a Methodist ward in the preaching district. [3]

In 1842, the building was lifted and moved on rollers using mules to the intersection of Kempsville Road and Battlefield Boulevard. [9] [11] Ten years later, the church’s name was changed from Caterell Meeting House to Oak Grove Church, largely due to a grove of oak trees surrounding the site. [3] [11]

Norfolk and Portsmouth experienced the yellow fever epidemic of 1855, sometimes called “Upshur’s fever”, caused by a steamboat. Benjamin Franklin , and the temporary Oak Grove Hospital was built so that church members could help the community during this time. [3] [12] [13] [14]

In 1862, federal troops began occupying and stationed much of the Hampton Roads area. Oak Grove Church was occupied from then until the end of the Civil War in 1865. The interior was destroyed by the troops as they used the furniture and the surrounding grove for firewood. [3]

In 1868 Oak Grove became part of the East Norfolk District. [3]

Three acres of land adjacent to the church were purchased in 1871, expanding the church grounds. [3]

The church became part of the South Norfolk District in 1873. [3]

In 1890, the US government reimbursed Oak Grove for damage to the church and surrounding trees during the Allied occupation of the building in the 1860s. [1] [3]

In 1935 a church school was added to the sanctuary, and in 1950 a public hall was built. [3]

In 1976, the church sanctuary in Oak Grove was recognized as a “Historic Building”. [3]

The new church building was completed and opened in 2007. [1] [3]

At the time, Manassas Crossing was little more than a railroad crossing, but was of strategic importance with rails leading to Richmond, Virginia, Washington, DC, and the Shenandoah Valley. Despite these two Confederate victories, Manassas Junction was in Union hands for most of the war.

After the war, the intersection grew into the city of Manassas, which was incorporated in 1873. In 1894, Manassas was designated the county seat of Prince William County, replacing it with Brentsville. In 1975, Manassas was incorporated as an independent city and was separated from Prince William County by Virginia law.

          Neighborhood

Some neighborhoods in the city of Manassas include:

          Georgetown South

Georgetown South is a PUD 30 miles south of downtown Washington DC. in Manassas. [15] When it was built in the 1960s, it was considered “the fine southern sister of the famous and wealthy area”. Georgetown. [16] It consists entirely of 3-room, 2-story red brick townhouses built between 1960 and 1970, some with cream or pastel exterior paint. The neighborhood has a community center that offers a free pediatric clinic, seminars, workshops, and citizenship courses. [16] Despite high hopes during construction, the area suffered greatly during the expropriation crisis. “At the height of the housing bubble, nearly 60 percent of residents were homeowners,” but in 2013, 60% of residents were renters. [16] When the houses eventually became empty, they left room for crime to creep in. Today, the area is known for a higher crime rate, including drug use and serious domestic crime, than due to its history or connection to the nation’s capital. [16]

          Downtown

Manassas Historic Downtown, also called Manassas Historic District or Manassas Old Town, is an area in downtown Manassas. According to Historic Manassas, this seven-by-one-block area alone contains 206 buildings and one ancillary facility. [17] Its northern boundary is Portner Avenue and its southern boundary is Prince William Street. [18] Back in the early 1990s, downtown Manassas was known for being dilapidated and was mostly used by workers coming from the area to Washington, DC. However, in 1995, local entrepreneur Loy E. Harris founded Historic Manassas and invested in the area to bring it back to life. Harris’s death in 1999 from cancer was felt in the community, [19] but his organization, Historical Manassas, remained. In the 2010s, more efforts were made to make the area successful not only commercially but also residentially. Developers seized the opportunity and built three- and four-story townhouses along East Center Street, East Church Street, and Prescott Avenue to appeal to a younger generation of homeowners looking for urban amenities in the suburbs. [ citation needed ] Across the block is the Harris Pavilion, an outdoor area that turns into an ice rink in the winter. [20] South of the Old City is the Manassas Museum, dedicated to the history of the city and its involvement in the American Civil War. [21] There are several buildings of note in downtown Manassas:

          • Manassas Presbyterian Church (1875)
          Old City Triangle

Old City Triangle is a historic residential area adjacent to the Old City of Manassas. It is named for its triangular shape with three street boundaries: Grant Avenue, Sudley Road, and Portner Avenue. [18] The Old Town Triangle mainly consists of spacious colonial, manor and one-story houses built between 1900 and 1955. [22] They are valued much higher than similar houses in neighboring blocks. [22] The Old City Triangle contains some of Manassas’ most famous buildings, including:

          • Annaburg Manor, a historic estate that was once converted into a retirement home, [23] and was acquired by the City of Manassas in July 2019year to have it restored to its original design by a concerned non-profit organization. The estate, built in 1892, was the home of Robert Portner. It was reportedly one of the first in the country to have mechanical air conditioning installed. [24]
          • Annaburg Manor Gatehouse, gatehouse for historic Liberian Estate [23]
          • Bennet House, historic home converted to bed and breakfast [25]

Overall, year-to-date results indicate a decline in Part 1 crimes (-14%) and all other crimes reported to the police (-9%). [36]

          Rail

Manassas began life as Manassas Junction , named after the rail junction between the Orange and Alexandria Railroad and the Manassas Gap Railroad. The O&A owned the railroad from Alexandria through Manassas to the south, terminating in Orange, Virginia, while the MGRR was an independent line built from the Manassas Junction through the Manassas Gap to the west. In addition, Manassas was the site of the first large-scale use of rail transport for military purposes.

These original routes are now owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway. Amtrak and the Virginia Railroad Express (VRE) provide regular intercity and suburban service to and from the city via NS-owned tracks. Manassas Station is served by VRE and three Amtrak routes: New York to Chicago Cardinal , Boston to Roanoke Northeast Regional , and New York to New Orleans Crescent .

Train Station was also used for the cover of Stephen Stills’ Manassas (album).

Kindergartens in the USA (with prices and photos)

Kindergartens (preschool) in the USA are almost completely unregulated by the federal government, and are entirely the responsibility of local authorities. In the United States, as a rule, there are no public kindergartens. Almost all preschool institutions are either private, or owned by a company for their employees, or are based on religious organizations. Almost all large churches have preschools that are open not only to the parishioners of this church, but also to any other people. It is quite common to see Muslim or Christian children attending pre-schools at Jewish temples.

A small digression about the terms. The word kindergarten (kindergarden or kindergarten) in the United States refers to the first grade of school, which goes after reaching 5 years. Where children go until the age of 5 is called either a child care center or simply a day school. A place for very young children is called a nursery (nursery).

Usually the gradation in the USA is like this. There may be slight differences between states.

            Nursery

            PreK-1

            PreK-2

            PreK-3

            PreK-4

Kindergarten (free, part of the public school system) from age 5.

Since all preschools in Russia are called kindergartens, to avoid misunderstandings, I will simply write “institutions” (preschools)

            1. Group size

Regulated by state law. Here in Florida, this is the maximum ratio of children to caregivers:

            Under 1 year – 1 adult for 4 children
            1 to 2 years – 1 adult for 6 children
            2 to 3 years – 1 adult for 11 children
            3 to 4 years – 1 adult for 15 children
            4 to 5 years – 1 adult per 20 children
            over 5 years – 1 adult per 25 children

But most kindergartens have smaller groups. For example, in the school I visited, 2 year olds were in groups of 14, with two adults. 3-4 year olds were in groups of 20 people, with two adults.

            2. Price

Based on the size of the groups and average salaries, we can roughly estimate the cost. Each group has at least two adults (sometimes 3) – a teacher and an assistant. A teacher’s salary is probably around $15-20 an hour, and an assistant’s salary could be in the region of $10-12 an hour. Therefore, if there are 8 children in the group, then the cost of only wages will be about $150-200 per week for each child. If there are 15 children in the group, then the salary costs will still not fall below $ 100 per week for each child. And in addition to the salary, you also need to maintain the premises, buy consumables and toys, and cover other expenses.

As a result, we have that in the cheapest option, it will cost about $600 per month (where there are large groups of children). Where the groups are smaller, it will cost about $1000 per month and more. Here is an example of prices in one of the local kindergartens. From 8:45 am to 1 pm costs $638 per month. If extended until 6 pm, it costs another $360 per month. There is a free program (state funded) for 4 year olds (VPK) but it’s only until 11:45 am and if you want to leave your 4 year old until 6 pm it costs $800 per month. If you do not pick up your child after 6 pm, then the late fee is $1 per minute. In addition, there is a one-time registration fee of $350. Also, every year they take $300 to improve the school. If more than one child from the family attends, then a 10% discount for the second, and 15% for the third.

There are some assistance programs and subsidies for poor people. One local agency says that for families with incomes below $55K a year, there are free seats, and for families with incomes from $55K to $170K a year, there are discounts. But since I do not fall into these categories, I can not say anything about these discounts.

I suspect that in more expensive locations (New York, San Francisco), prices may be substantially higher due to higher room costs and higher wages, and in lower-priced locations, prices may be slightly lower.

You can expand from 7 am to 18:00. In this particular institution, once a week, on Wednesdays, they go to church. Also, every day they read a passage from the bible. Twice a day they go out to play on the playground. Twice a week they study music or the arts, and twice a week they study the sciences.

            4. What it looks like

Each child brings a backpack. It has a change of clothes just in case, and lunch.

The room is divided into sections (centers), and each section has its own theme – drawing, reading, geography, letters, animals. Children are divided into smaller groups, and each is engaged in his section.

This is a separate library with computers.

This is a room for 4 year olds.

They have 2 playgrounds, by age, for 2 year olds (and younger), 3 year olds (and older). This is a playground for 2 year olds.

This one is for 3 year olds.

There is also a separate zen garden with fish.

            5. Nutrition

Everything is different here. In some establishments, all meals are included. But in most institutions, parents have to bring meals. In this particular facility, they provide a couple of snacks in the morning and evening, but parents are required to provide their children with lunch.

            6. Daytime Sleep

In the nursery they sleep in cots.
