How to Make a Thanksgiving Handprint Art Garland

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Pair finger painted hand tracings with festive pom pom to create a Thanksgiving handprint art garland for kids.

Updated September 2022

We love these beautiful Thanksgiving garlands featuring finger-painted hands with words of gratitude written on them. It was a multi-step process, but well worth the extra steps and involvement. Plus we used homemade edible finger paint!

A big thank you to Dixie Crystals Sugar Kids in the Kitchen for sponsoring this post! As always, all opinions expressed are my own.

The finger paint is made with only sugar, cornstarch, water and food coloring. Super easy! You probably have everything you need in the kitchen right now. You can save or print the recipe at the bottom of this post!

Since this finger paint is edible, you can offer it to the youngest toddler without worrying that they’re going to be tasting and testing as they paint with their hands.

You could even offer some to an older baby in a high chair. Simply tape a piece of paper to the tray, add a spoonful of paint or two, and encourage them to smush the paint around with their hands.

Just because it’s edible, doesn’t mean you want to encourage your little one to eat art supplies, but you’ll feel better knowing that the finger paint is completely nontoxic and edible.

Here’s how we made these kids’ Thanksgiving garlands…

Thanksgiving Handprint Art

MATERIALS

  • Homemade edible finger paint made with Dixie Crystals Sugar (see recipe at the end of this post)
  • Paper or cardstock
  • Sharpie marker (we used gold metallic markers)
  • Hole punch
  • Embroidery thread or yarn
  • Large, blunt embroidery needle
  • Pompoms & large beads

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Finger paint

First, have a finger painting session with your homemade finger paints. You can paint on finger paint paper but heavier paper, like card stock will work better for the finished garland.

  2. Let paint dry

Make sure your paint is completely dry before making your garland.

  3. Trace kids’ hands

Use a pencil to trace your kids’ hands. If you are doing this with older kids, they could trace their own hands.

    Cut out the hand tracings.

  4. Write words of gratitude

Ask your kids what they are thankful for (see the gratitude prompts below) and write their words of gratitude on their hands with Sharpie markers. Older kids can write the words themselves.

  5. String a pompom garland

Use a large, blunt embroidery needle (best for young kids) on the end of some doubled up embroidery thread to string a garland of pompoms and big beads.

  6. Add thankful hands to pompom garland

Punch holes at the top of each thankful hand and string a 6 inch length of embroidery thread through it. Then tied the hand to the pompom garland.

  7. Hang your Thanksgiving garlands!

Display your new Thanksgiving garlands where everyone can see them and be reminded of what they are thankful for.

Here’s the printable recipe for the edible finger paint we used.

  • 4 tablespoons Dixie Crystals Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
  • 1/3 cup corn starch
  • 2 cups water
  • red, green, blue and yellow food coloring

  1. Mix together sugar, corn starch and water in a saucepan.
  2. Heat mixture over medium heat while stirring with a whisk. As soon as it begins to thicken, remove from heat. If mixture is too thick, add water.
  3. Divide mixture equally between four bowls and add four drops of food coloring to each bowl.
  4. Store in an airtight container. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Gratitude Prompts for Little Kids:

The gratitude part is easy for older children to understand. If you ask 6 year olds what they are grateful or thankful for, they’ll tell you their family and friends, toys, and favorite foods, etc.

But for younger kids who don’t yet grasp what gratitude means, it’s a bit trickier.

Here are some questions we can use to help little kids understand what gratitude means.

What do you think? Would you make Thanksgiving garlands like these with your kids?

This post is sponsored by Huggies® because “Kids Outgrow Diapers, Not Messes™”. As always, all opinions are my own.

I love making handprint and footprint crafts with my kids because they always melt my heart, so to decorate for Thanksgiving we made two of the cutest turkeys I have ever seen! This craft is adorable to hang up in your house or for the kids to give them to people in their life they are thankful for (like mom and dad and grandma and grandpa). With this craft you need several handprints and a footprint so if you aren’t ready to clean up those adorable little hands and feet you could end up with a mess (and you don’t want that when the family is headed over for Thanksgiving dinner)–don’t worry because as long as you are prepared this craft is super easy to make and clean up (keep reading to find out how).

Little Dragon has been out of diapers for a while now (yay!) I just gave away our last pack, but our Huggies® Wipes are still used every day on my kid’s hands, feet, faces, and whatever else managed to get messy. I keep the adorable Clutch and Clean Packs in my purse, car, and in our craft supplies. My kid’s know exactly where to go and what to use when they make a mess and since the wipes have no harsh chemicals I don’t have to worry about what they are wiping. Whenever we do handprint and footprint crafts I spread out a plastic tablecloth and open up the wipes. Once the kids are done painting they grab a wipe and start cleaning up without having to travel to the sink–this is awesome because no footprints end up on the floor or handprints on the faucet!

Supplies:

Red, yellow, orange, brown craft paint

Paint brushes

Huggies® Wipes

Red and orange craft paper

Googly eyes

Craft paper

Scissors

Glue

Directions:

Coat child’s hand with yellow paint and firmly press their hand on the paper. I find it easiest to put my hand on top of their hand so they don’t wiggle their little fingers. Repeat with orange and red paint having them place their palm around the same spot to make the turkeys feathers. We laid our handprints on top of each other, but you could always make 3 individual prints if that is easier. Set handprints aside to dry.

Coat child’s foot with brown paint and toes with orange paint and press their foot firmly on the paper. Again, I like to put my hand on top of their feet so they don’t wiggle. Set footprint aside to dry.

Cut around the handprints and footprints. Cut a red waddle (tear drop shape) and a yellow beak (triangle shape) and have child glue them and a googly eye to the heel side of their footprint to make the turkey face.

Have child glue handprints to the back of their footprint. We glued our turkeys to a tan piece of paper and I was feeling so thankful for the two little turkeys in my life I added a heart for love. If you don’t have two kids you could always make a turkey using each hand and foot or have each family member make one.

Once your done don’t forget to post a photo of your messy kid with the hashtag #HugTheMessSweepstakes on Twitter or Instagram for your chance to win $2,500. Finger Painting (45 ideas for kids)

All children, especially toddlers, love to paint with their fingers. You need to adjust with a brush, and point with your finger where you need it, quickly and accurately. It is EASIER AND EASIER for children to draw with their fingers. In younger groups of early age, it is recommended to draw only with fingers, so as not to frighten the child with a brush. In this article, I want to show you ALL STAGES of development of FINGER DRAWING for children . We will analyze the technique of drawing with fingers for all age periods: from the smallest children, toddlers and babies, to the older group of kindergarten, as well as to school age and to a venerable artist. You will see bright and beautiful works in this non-standard technique of working with paints. We will draw a lot and in detail here with our fingers. With vivid examples of drawings, explanations of techniques and tips for convenient organization of the drawing process.

Finger painting.

Preparatory phase.

Young children love to draw. They do it, no matter what, liquid porridge that you feed them, poop that you managed to get in a diaper, or saliva on linoleum. There is no need to scold them. We must praise. Because the child wants to develop.

Without drawing, there is no development. At school, those children who are not given your pencils, paints, plasticine and other visual aids in the preschool period are stupid. And if they did, then with the phrase “On – draw” and turned away to their adult chores.

Of course you don’t want to thin the paint… water… then clean it up . Better brush it off. But in a few years you will have to sweat with your child over school textbooks and copybooks. Choose either later “2 hours every evening with notebooks” or now “20 minutes” every day with drawing.

The quickest and easiest way to organize your finger painting is with a “sand mix” bowl. Usually it is SALT – small food. You can add dyes (dry food) and small spangles (sprinkles for manicure) to it. Show your child how to draw stripes… draw circles with their hand. Then the sun, snowflakes, emoticons and so on. You can buy a tray in the store and paint it with acrylic paints – RAINBOW STRIPS. So you will develop the color perception of the baby – photo below. The rainbow at the bottom of the tray (box) does not have to be depicted with paints – these can be strips of colored adhesive film from a construction store.

Finger painting.

for babies from 1 year old

Stage 1 (chaotic prints)

Finger painting can be started as soon as the child has started to sit on the bottom. This usually occurs in the 8th month of life. Your child is securely seated in the feeding chair – place a sheet of white paper on the table in front of him (to prevent the sheet from falling off the table, fasten it with double-sided tape). And put a flat jar of paint next to it (a nylon lid from a jar is suitable) – we also attach it to double-sided tape so that the child does not throw it off the table.

Show with your own hands how interesting it is to leave marks on paper. Then take his pen, select a finger and try to draw with the child’s hand. This is a very useful job for children. After all, here is the SELECTION OF THE INDEX FINGER – separating it from the rest of the fingers of the hand.

Of course, at first the child will work with all fingers and palms. But you constantly show him that it is more convenient to draw with your index finger, take it and draw it with your finger every time – at least 1-2 minutes. Sooner or later, the child will realize the LEADING ROLE of the index finger – and this will be a breakthrough in the development of his artistic skills.

To make your child’s first finger painting have ARTISTIC MEANING, you can glue a piece of paper with a TEMPLATE (a piece of masking tape). As in the photo below.

Gouache can be used as finger paint for children, salt should be poured into it – so that the child does not have the desire to lick it off his fingers.

If you don’t want to give paint from the chemical plant. Make your own finger paint. It can be thick sour cream, thick cottage cheese or semolina – where you add food coloring.

Come up with your own interesting drawing topics for children – for example, make it snow over the city. Naturally, you draw the city yourself – and already the child draws dotted snow above it with his finger.

One day you will notice that when drawing a snowfall over a tree, the child will begin to spread its snow over the branches, and pile up snowdrifts under the tree. Or lay the snow where you say. This means that the child CAN ALREADY purposefully GET into the given areas of the drawing, that is, he is already ready for the next stage of finger drawing.

Finger painting

Stage 2 — ZONE filling.

The next stage in the development of finger painting is the FILLING of a certain ZONE with prints, which cannot be entered. This task is qualitatively performed by children about 2 years old. But not all. And not right away. It takes time for the child to realize what “Stay inside the zone, do not go beyond the line” means. For example, – PINEAPPLE and SHEEP. The educator on a piece of paper only sets the contours, the boundaries for which you do not need to go. For a mouse, this is already a difficult task to 1) poke a finger inside a given area, 2) fill the entire area without leaving empty spaces. Here and logic and eye and coordination of hands and fingers – difficult work in the “eye-hand” system.

You can come up with ideas for similar works for the smallest children – a yellow round chicken, a fish on which you need to poke scales, draw red rowan berries for a bullfinch, dandelion fluff, and so on. Here are activities that are easy to organize in the drawing class in kindergarten, and art activities in elementary school.

For the New Year, you can also create many interesting drawings with your fingers. Any New Year’s stencil can be zoned filled with finger prints.

Once the children have practiced poking into small areas with their fingers and learning how to fill them in randomly with spots of paint, you can give them a BIGGER task. For example, draw large objects with your fingers. On a sheet of paper, with weak lines of a pencil, outline the contours of a bear or dog. Before the eyes of the child, first do all the work yourself – poke without climbing over the lines, then add eyes from above, poke the nose … and carefully draw the mouth with a cotton swab.

Then on the second sheet let the child make a friend to the dog – himself from beginning to end. You can tell him which empty places he has bypassed his attention. Such large-scale work can be carried out in the middle and senior groups of the kindergarten, and also these finger drawings will appeal to elementary school students.

Finger painting

Stage 3

LINEAR.

The teacher draws a line on a piece of paper. The child should string colored circle beads on this line. To make a rainbow caterpillar. Or beads for mom. Or a garland with multi-colored light bulbs. You will find many finger painting ideas for children in the world around us. Look around…

For young children, stringing prints in one line, or in a certain place, is a HARD CHALLENGE. In no case do not scold him for the fact that he is “such a gap” poking past. Praise him for an accurate hit and smile, joke kindly over an inaccurate one – say “Wow, well done, almost hit!” even if he’s in the wrong place. Help him aim – perhaps the child does not even understand that he is waiting for the aiming location of fingerprints in a certain place.

Your speech is also not always clear to him. The phrase “put your finger on the line” may not be clear to him. Take his pen in your hand and with him first go through the whole drawing. And tomorrow invite him to do the same – and you will see that he will already do what he could only do with your help yesterday.

In pedagogy, there is such a concept of ZPD – the zone of proximal development. WHAT a child can do today WITH A PROMPT OF ADULT – tomorrow he will be able to do ALMOST ITSELF, and after tomorrow INDEPENDENTLY. Create such ZBR-ZONES for him… let him first, with your help, master new movements in drawing.

Lines can have KNOTS – spot locations. In a garland, these are the bases of light bulbs. In plants, these are the bends of twigs and stems.

You draw the background yourself, or with the help of a child, “leading” his hand. And then help the child aimingly lower the finger in the paint to the right place in the picture. Then he himself will tear his pen out of your hand and will try to get to the right place on his own.

In kindergarten (in the middle and senior groups), such a task can be divided into 2 lessons – on the first lesson, draw a background (sun and sky), on the second lesson – thin twigs and prints.

A child’s ability to lay even rows of finger patterns is an important stage in the development of finger art. Here we are working with several colors, each of which must find its linear place. Ideas for crafts are very different “Let’s decorate an umbrella for a girl”, or “Let’s paint an egg for Easter”, or “Let’s give mom a knitted striped hat for winter”

Important!!! Do not scold the child FOR THE FIRST ATTEMPT – they are the first. Forget about your ambitions and expectations of the result. A carrot cannot grow in three days – what do you require from a child.

The child must get used to it. In a month, his irregular rows of pumpkins will even out, gain clarity and linearity. Praise his crooked work. And they will get better every day, week, month.

First, the child lays down the STRAIGHT LINES in rows of prints. Then he begins to master the technique of laying ALONG THE CURVED LINE – at first it is a children’s drawing-worm, then a multi-row rainbow (it is better not to do it at once, but to divide the work on the rainbow for several days).

A little later, you can give the child a task of increased complexity – to lay prints along the COOL CURL of the snail (photo below).

An even more difficult task for children is to stack the fingerprints RADIALLY – that is, in a circle FROM THE CENTER. So are the spots on the tail of a turkey or peacock. Or you can decorate any round object starting from the center and moving in a circle to the edges of the circle.

That is, at this stage, there is already purposeful DESIGN from fingerprints.

Finger painting

(separate fun)

Drawings for prints.

Fingerprints – can be used as a BASE for character creation. So three prints side by side resemble the BODY of an ANT. And all we need is a black marker pen to complete this look by adding paws and whiskers.

Finger painting for kids challenges you as an idea generator. Ants fingers… good. What else can be constructed from fingerprints? Think.

If the child is already of preschool age, then he already knows how to use felt-tip pens. Show him how to turn fingerprints into animals and insects.

Place your finger with a flat pad on a sheet of paper – rolling it to get a larger print. Then we dry the paint, take a felt-tip pen in our hands and think of what this oval silhouette can be turned into.

Finger Painting

Advanced Stage

IMPRESSION – SMEAR.

And the most creative and most beautiful stage in this non-traditional finger painting technique, which can already be mastered in older groups of kindergarten and even in elementary school, is ARTISTIC finger painting of entire multi-color pictures.

The finger is used as a BRUSH because the prints already resemble a BRUSH STRAB.

This is already a technique of a large stroke – as in the paintings of many artists. Painting with large strokes with your fingers can create beautiful landscapes. Finger painting is not a primitive for toddlers. This is an opportunity to achieve a high artistic understanding. A sense of color, a sense of composition, a sense of transition from one shade to another.

Look at these artists’ works. They look like they were drawn with fingers. Perhaps your classes with children in this interesting technique will become the grain from which a new artist can grow in the future.

Continue to teach children new interesting lines. Show them that they can make not only prints with their fingers, but also smeared lines. Here are the needles for a hedgehog made with fingers using the imprint-dab technique.

Have him draw the branches of the Christmas tree with his fingers on either side of the center line of the STEM. It is convenient to draw a FENCE with your fingers – simple straight lines. Finger painting creates SEA PICTURES well – wavy lines look like waves of all shades of blue and purple. And stick a dolphin out of paper on the waves.

Spiral lines create a BLOOMING ROSE silhouette. Why not make a postcard for mom on March 8 in this beautiful technique of children’s finger painting.

Children can see beauty. But not all children believe that they can TRANSFER this beauty ON PAPER. Gradual advancement in learning to paint with fingers will give the child the opportunity to START transferring the beauty of this world to the canvas. Even the largest paintings, landscapes can be painted with children’s fingers. You just need to start … first from the first stage of “chaotic poking”, then master the “zonal filling” .. and so on through all the stages from this article. Just move forward, wrapping FAITH in yourself as an artist.

Now you know where to start, how to continue and what perfection to strive for. Draw with fingers, hands, palms. Draw and be happy.

And keep learning with the Family Bunch website. To do this, we have articles on ideas for drawing with children in kindergarten and at school.

Chapter 32. Thanksgiving with the destroyer. — MegaLecs

I roared with all my eyes as Dustin told me the story of Peter and his wife, Emma. I couldn’t speak for the next few minutes and Dustin put his arms around me, stroking my hair.
– I know – he kissed my forehead, wiping my tears with his gentle fingers, and his dizzy gaze burned into my soul as he stared at me long and hard … as if with that look he could heal me from the inside, just looking deep enough . And his eyes did it.
“Sometimes it’s a fucked up world…” Dustin said quietly and thoughtfully, “I can’t believe this is the same world that gave me the greatest sadness and fears of my life…
He stroked my cheek and lifted my chin so that my eyes looked into his . .. and he finished:
– At the same time gave me YOU … and Cathy … the two weeks we spent together … and every day since then … I often wonder if there is God…and if so, why does He get so mad at me sometimes…and then give me so much…and He reminds me of Alex. I never know what to expect – a slap or a kiss.
I sniffed and lowered my eyes, shaking my head, and then said,
– But… Peter… was not only beaten to a pulp,… he had to look at what… what they were doing to his wife,… and he was so close, but he couldn’t touch her…
Dustin shuddered violently, and when he closed his eyes tears came out, large and glistening.
– I’ve been complaining all the time about what people have done to me… Dustin’s voice cracked and cracked, “But if I had to just lie there and watch SOMEONE hurt you like this… or Cathy…
– Shhhh… – I pulled him closer to me, kissing his closed eyes and feeling him tremble, – Nothing like that will happen. We are safe. And we live in the most boring place on the planet, so forget it. I’m here…and I’m with you. Nothing and no one will ever be strong enough to take me away from you. Do not worry about it.
And then Dustin started talking about Thanksgiving.
“And our biggest problem this Thanksgiving is who’s cooking dinner,” he said, making me feel small and insignificant…and he was right.
“Marcus is lonely, Peter is lonely…” he mused aloud, “We have so much to be thankful for, for the first time in six years for me, … I want to do something this year for Thanksgiving.”
– Whatever you want, I will agree, Dustin …, – I quickly and gently kissed his lips, and I liked that when I kissed him, they reminded me of melting butter – soft, almost liquid.
“I owe you a lot with this,” I admitted. “I’ve been acting like a fool, like a selfish ass for the last couple of weeks.” It’s not really about the FOOD… at Thanksgiving… it’s about WHO you’re going to eat it with.
– Exactly, – he smiled, and then a mischievous little gleam of light appeared in his dark emerald eyes, . .. and I knew what they were planning right now. Sometimes, I swear, when he makes that face, I see him as Lucy Peterardo. We all have a real problem. But I calmly smiled and waited for him to voice his ideas.

Thanksgiving morning went on as usual, and even the weather favored us. It was snowing lightly, … the weather forecast promised more snowfall in the future. Angela and Ben stayed with us last night to get up early, and she and I were able to start cooking the turkey in the morning. It was about nine when the TV showing the Thanksgiving Parade went out. All our windows were covered with curtains or shields from the cold air, which seemed to seep in from below, so that the light was on in our house … and now we were in darkness.
The first person we heard was Ben … who was sitting on the couch with Cathy.
– HEY! he shouted in a rough tone, as if turning off the TV was causing him physical pain, “POWER IS OFF!”
– Is it true, Ben? – I slyly smiled at him in the dark, – Are you sure?
– Either that, or we’re all blind at the same time! Katy giggled.
I smiled and giggled at the remark too, touching her head as she came from the couch into my arms, “You know, baby, you’re developing the SAME sense of humor your father did.”
– I’m sorry, she said evenly.
– It’s okay, we still love you, – I played with her hair and looked around, – Dustin! Where are you?
– Here, – he said, walking towards us from the other end of the house, and now entering the living room, – I was in the bathroom.
– Oh, it’s not the right place to find you in the dark right now! Kathy said.
– Tell me about it, – he replied, placing his hand on my forearm and moving closer to the place where we all gathered, – I’m glad I know a place where nothing can be seen, or I would be in big trouble.
“Whoa,” Cathy commented.
Dustin parted the curtains on a couple of windows in the living room so that at least some light entered the room … and Cathy sat down at the table to draw in her notebook. I was glad she didn’t complain so far. But the main whiner today was Ben.
– So that means we’re without TV today! – he said, still pressing the buttons of the remote control from the “dead” TV.
– Yeah, usually no power means that, Ben, – said Dustin, sitting down on the sofa, – Flicking the remote won’t fix it.
– Well, what are we going to do with the turkey and everything else that we need to cook? Angela asked.
– Marcus must have electricity in the restaurant, – said Dustin, – He has a really good system there, with a backup generator. You need to go to him. We will take all the food with us and cook it there.
Ben didn’t care where he went, as long as he could watch TV and eat there. Angela was forced to have a conversation with me about this… but in the end, we used Cathy to talk her down.
– It’s all right, – Cathy said, – I can just have some sweet pie for dinner. Small business.
Worked. Angela’s eyes filled with tears and she said:
– No, baby, you will have a hot and tasty dinner today. This is a special day for all of us.
She then smiled at Dustin and silently touched his face, showing that she understood that this was a special holiday. Dustin closed his eyes and leaned into her hand, …and then she said:
– Gather everything you want to take with you. We are going to a Chinese restaurant.
– Hurray! – Dustin was the first to shout happily and hugged Angela, – You won’t regret it, Mom, … this will be a great day, I promise. No Chinese dragons or anything like that.
– It’s already a great day, Dustin, – she wiped her eyes, – You’re here. That’s all we wanted for the last six Thanksgivings. Don’t worry, I’m not going to complain.
– I love you mom, – he hugged her even tighter, – Thank you.
– Ah…are you trying to break all the old woman’s bones? She has already complained. – Loosen your grip, boy, … let my blood flow through my veins …
He released her and neighed, saying:
– I’m sorry.
Angela then took charge of the packing and handed out assignments to everyone. Ben had to put chains on the wheels of the car on the street. Dustin, on the other hand, was instructed to collect everything that Katie would need.
“Have some fun out there, Ben,” Dustin teased as he followed Cathy to her room.
– HEY! Ben shouted. “Why shouldn’t HE GO OUT THE STREET?”
– He’s on more important business, so shut up and get out! – Angela tossed Ben’s coat, – Stop grumbling and just do something useful!
– HEY BEN! – Dustin just couldn’t help but throw one last barb at Ben, – Could you make a snow angel for me while you’re outside?
– I’ll make a snow angel out of YOU! – he rushed to Dustin, but Angela saved him again, standing in Ben’s way and pointing her finger at the door.
Dustin stuck out his tongue at Ben while Angela had her back to him and Ben just grumbled:
– Okay, Dustin, …wait. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
– Don’t forget your hat, Ben, – Dustin smiled back at him, – And a scarf, … it seems SO cold outside. And don’t forget your galoshes.
Even I had to laugh at this. Ben always called his boots galoshes. Dustin is so mean sometimes, but it’s impossible not to love him.
We loaded Ben’s truck and even took our TV with us! Ben refused to go without him! He drove the truck slowly and steadily, but it still didn’t take us long to get to Jimmy Chen’s restaurant. We heard that the snowfall would increase over the next couple of hours, and Cathy didn’t leave the house until we called Dr. Peter and told him about the change of plans. It suited him, too, because he lived closer to Jimmy’s restaurant than to our house.
When we stopped at the restaurant and saw that this is the only place in the whole city where there is a light and a neon sign is on, I realized that a real miracle would happen if Markus would let us all in at all. But the sign said the restaurant was open. There was not a single car in the parking lot … and the whole city really seemed to be extinct.
Not a single witness.
Dustin was smart enough to lead Cathy by the hand. I felt downright sick as I stood at Marcus’s door with my hands full of food boxes and Ben behind everyone with a TV in hand.
The silver bell Dustin brought him that day was still on the hostess counter and Dustin had rung it before I even got through the door.
Cathy giggled and then Dustin lifted her up a bit so she could ring the bell too. What a father is – such a daughter, … nice.
– Kuldyk! Kuldyk! Kuldyk! Cathy mimed the sound of a turkey, and Marcus looked out of the kitchen window where he was.
– Here it is! – Dustin pointed to Katie – The world’s largest TURKEY!
She let out a guttural laugh as Marcus slowly walked towards us.
– You better have a FUCKING good reason for THIS, white boy! he said without really raising his voice yet.
– Happy Thanksgiving to YOU too! – Dustin said with complete delight in his voice and tightly hugged Marcus … and he almost immediately pushed him away.
“Happy Thanksgiving, Mr. Evans,” Cathy said sweetly and politely, and it made even Marcus smile a little.
“Happy Thanksgiving, Cathy,” he chuckled at her, “You should teach your dad to do that once in a while.”
– How I tried! Cathy sounded like a thirty-five-year-old mother now.
“Marcus,” Dustin was serious now, “We had a power outage about an hour ago, … and I know I’m asking for a lot, and I’ll never ask you for it again, but … we can hang around here today, … and not could you let the girls cook their turkeys in your kitchen?
Marcus stared at Dustin as if he was asking him for permission to shit on the table.
– Anything else? he asked. “Are you sure you don’t want to spend the night here?”
– Oh, yes, – Dustin looked at me, and then at Marcus, – We may need this too. If it snows as much as promised, …nice invitation, …thank you, man.
– Invitation? he snapped back. “Look that word up in the dictionary, CLAY!”
Dustin beckoned Cathy over and she came over. ..and he lifted her into his arms so her face was right next to his.
– Okay, I know we weren’t invited, so let’s go, – Dustin sighed, – I just hope we get home safely along these roads … with an old man driving …
– HEY! Ben shouted from behind, “I’m NOT an old man!” I drive as well as ever!
Dustin ignored his words and continued:
– And I guess if we make it home alive, then we can always figure out how to reheat some frozen chicken nuggets or whatever… even though we don’t have a microwave or oven…maybe I’ll light matches and cook with them…
Marcus continued to glare at Dustin.
“But I don’t like chicken nuggets, Dad,” Cathy said in a stupid, sad voice.
– I’m sorry Cathy, but this is the best thing I can do… there are people who have much less than what we have… we should be very grateful for everything we have… we still have a friend at a friend’s,” Dustin sighed, “I’m sorry we bothered you, Marcus…happy Thanksgiving. Honestly, you are a true friend. Bye.
Dustin said this without any sarcasm whatsoever. Damn, he’s good. And Kathy is really good too. A team against which resistance is futile. And you had to be Charles Manson to kick us out after that little show.
We turned around and headed for the door, even though Ben didn’t even move. He still held the television set in his hands with a stony expression and a reluctance to leave written on it.
“Fuck, get back here, you pain in the ass,” Marcus said in an almost warm tone, … except he swore.
– Watch your tongue! Dustin covered Cathy’s ears as Angela entered, her eyes searching for the kitchen.
– I’ve heard swear before, dad! Kathy rolled her eyes as she disentangled herself from Dustin’s arms.
– Where? Dustin began the interrogation.
– Thank you, Mr. Chen, Angela said sweetly, not realizing that she was calling him by a false name, and Dustin tried to hold back his laughter … but was defeated and laughed out loud.
– Yes, thank you, Jim, – Ben muttered, walking deeper into the restaurant and looking for a place where he could plug the TV into the socket.
– What the HELL? What are you – GET OUT? Marcus said as he watched the TV being carried past him and Ben moving the table towards the outlet to turn it on.
– He is old, the TV is his woman, what else can I say? Dustin shrugged. “We could watch the game later.”
Angela returned a second later and asked Marcus:
– Excuse me, Mr. Chen, … but is it okay if I throw those vegetables into the bucket by the oven? It seems they are rotten.
– What vegetables? Marcus frowned and then ran back to the kitchen. “And no, don’t throw anything away!” I’ll show you where you can cook, okay?
I followed them into the kitchen with my own turkey and food so I wouldn’t be left out. Angela and I each cooked our own turkey, … it was a kind of compromise, … and everyone was satisfied. This year it was the right decision for us.

*************************************************** **************************

The first phase of my plan was successful: we were at Jimmy Chen’s restaurant. Good.
I need to buy Cathy some lovely present for her performance. She was excellent. Natural. One day she will rule the world, you’ll see.
While the girls took over Marcus’s kitchen, I sat next to Ben and watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast on TV from 1924 years in some major US cities – approx.trans.). The broadcast was almost over, but I just liked that I could see New York again, even if it was only in the background. I almost sighed as I looked at the tall buildings, the gray cloudy sky,… the streets full of shops,… the half-frozen children on their fathers’ shoulders, smiling at the platforms they passed.
God, I miss New York.
I know he doesn’t make too much of an impression when you watch him on TV, but New York at Christmas is something. All the trees in garlands with white lanterns, and even the poorest trees in the city, seem to have dressed up for the holiday. A huge number of Christmas patterns everywhere, golden angels trumpeting, looking at the sky, the tree at Rockefeller Center (the main spruce of New York – approx. per.), The skating rink right under it, … when everything was still fine, Natasha and I usually loved to watch the streets go by, … huddled together under the covers while riding in a beautiful taxi, drinking hot chocolate.
Watching It’s a Wonderful Life or The Grinch Stole Christmas at Radio City Music Hall, …or The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, …walking down 57th Street, looking through all the shop windows, …and it wasn’t just the windows , it was a WORK OF ART, and each next one is better than the previous one.
And every year on Christmas Eve I went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, … no matter what my attitude towards God was at that moment, … and I got on my knees and prayed for Cathy for a long time. So that everything is fine with her, then – so that her operations are successful, so that she no longer experiences pain … so that she will be fine again next year without me … so that she does not forget me … or, God forbid, didn’t stop loving me. I cried every time I got on my knees, missing her so much I could hardly breathe.
FAO Schwartz was the second place where I spent a lot of time. I’ve always shopped there and sent Kathy gifts…not just on holidays and birthdays, but throughout the year. After the operation, every day in the morning a gift was waiting for her from me, … and on the days of rehabilitation, when she might need a good mood. Those were the bittersweet days when I went to the toy store over the Christmas holidays. I think I was the only parent who truly cried while shopping at this store. I would buy her anything she asks for…knowing that I can’t look at her face the moment she opens the gift…and can’t watch her play. And at such moments, I completely dissolved the snot. One day, Cooper even left the store because I gave him a big hug.
Once I was there, I think, on the thirtieth of November, and when I turned into another aisle between the rows, I saw Alex there. I almost dropped what I was holding and she grinned. She knew that I was shopping in this store and never forbade me from it, . .. this is my business, as she always said. For a second I was afraid she was going to ban me from coming here for some stupid made-up reason, but she didn’t. She had a surprise for me.
Then Katy was about five years old, and I was very proud of her progress in kindergarten, where she went for the first year. She got straight A’s and Ben even sent me a copy of her report card. So this year I bought her everything, no matter how much it cost.
Alex smiled at me and asked:
– Is this for you… or for the baby?
I had a lot of pink boxes in my hands with “Barbie” written all over them…it was the furniture for the doll’s “dream house” that was set aside for me. And a few more dolls.
She always called Cathy baby. I hated it. I don’t know why, … it’s just that she said it like that, … like it was something offensive.
– My daughter is five years old, – I said simply and chuckled slightly, – And yes, this is for her. Toys for me a little further – in the department for boys.
She laughed and ruffled my hair with her fingers, …my hands were full so I couldn’t stop her. I wouldn’t be able to stop her even if my hands weren’t full…but I stepped back…
“So cute…” she told me as I smiled at her, putting on a happy mask for a second.
– Thank you, I replied. In public, I didn’t have to call her Mistress, I just had to behave respectfully and obey her.
“I’ve got a little surprise for you,” she admitted as she walked beside me as I examined the toys in the next row.
“Let me guess…” I teased slightly, “Christmas plans for us.”
Every Christmas was the same. Crowded parties, … a sea of alcohol, … me, naked and bound, the toy in every Mistress’s dungeon, and each year was more exhausting than the last.
Last year I was their live Christmas tree and they decorated my body with a Christmas tree star in my mouth and I had to put my head back and hold it without letting it fall; they hung heavy metal weights on my nipples and on my penis, which they painted with red and green paint, . ..then they hung an electric garland on me, …and amused themselves for a long time, pricking me with a special sting, which, upon contact with the human body, caused slight itching pain. They even put the rails of a toy railway around me on my knees and kept me in that position in the corner for hours while they drank and enjoyed the party.
I was an object, no better than a real tree, who could smile from time to time when the conversation died down, … something set and forgotten, a bright little thing in the background, … and I was glad to be an object, … it was better than when they suddenly remembered me, … and wanted to play some games with me.
But now Alex has a big surprise for me. I doubted I would be surprised at all, but I kept playing.
– Yes, I’m planning something different this year, – Alex looked like she’s about to explode, – Since you’ve been so good this year, Santa told me he had a great idea!
– Raven’s house? I suggested, and there wasn’t much enthusiasm in my voice.
– Nope.
– Your house? I suggested again, not wanting to play the game at all.
– This is… your baby’s house! she said, and I froze in place in the middle of the aisle.
I looked at her and was speechless for a second. Then it dawned on me that she was joking. I was very angry with her.
“That’s not funny, Alex,” I said in a deep, even voice, turning away from her and continuing to choose toys.
– Dustin, I can be many things, but I’m definitely NOT a JOKE! – she said right behind me, – I have already booked plane tickets to Florida, … and on the twenty-fourth of December we are flying!
My jaw dropped.
– Why are you doing this for me, Alex? I asked in a very sad, calm voice, looking for a little mercy in her eyes.
– I’m not kidding, IDIOT! – she hit me on the arm, and I almost dropped everything I was holding, – You haven’t seen the baby for a long time, and the other day you looked a little sad, … you are doing a great job, … now you are VERY good, . .. you have learned everything, …you are ideal. It’s my way of saying, “Here’s a little bone for you…rejoice.” Besides, I need some sun. The cold here is really aging me.
She, too, was about to fly, … I was in such shock that I almost did not realize what this meant.
“This is not a joke,” I declared, and she shook her head, smiling at me. – Do you swear?
– I swear, – she raised her head.
– Alex…, – I felt tears in my eyes and completely lost the ability to speak, … I could only cough stifledly, – Really?
– Really, – she put her hands on my shoulders, – You were a really good boy, honey. Merry Christmas!
I dropped everything I was holding and hugged her, covering her face with kisses and hiding my eyes from other moms who were watching our depraved actions in the Barbie doll department. But I didn’t care. I passionately kissed her with my tongue and squeezed her ass with both hands, … telling her thereby: “I love you.”
I sent Katie all the presents and called her the next day to tell her that we would spend Christmas Eve together. She was crying and was so excited that she screamed and jumped on the spot. For the next few weeks, I was in seventh heaven. I have never danced so well … and smiled at so many women while they caressed me as I did that month.
On December 24th my bags were packed. I even bought sunscreen and bathing suits for Alex and me. The doctor had just given Cathy permission to swim in a chlorinated pool, so I couldn’t wait to see her swim. We arrived at the airport and stood in line for check-in when it happened.
I was standing in line for Alex, almost jumping with anticipation when she looked at me and said:
– You look happy.
– IT IS, – I smiled like an idiot.
“I’ve noticed that you never look so happy when you’re going somewhere with me alone,” she stated.
– I love to ride with you Alex, – I leaned towards her, realizing that she needed some attention, – And I LOVE to come with you too …
I smiled and kissed her, grabbing her long thick hair in a fist, and the rest the people in line sighed in envy. One woman behind Alex looked like she was kissing with us…her lips closed and parted as she stared at me.
When my eyes opened and I looked straight at her, … she almost died, turning purple and hiding her face behind her hair, telling her three teenage daughters to mind their own business and pretending to look the other way.
I even smiled at her without realizing it when I let go of Alex and we moved a little further in line. I could not believe it! I couldn’t believe that in a couple of hours I would be hugging my daughter… and that this year I would see her opening presents! It was like winning a billion dollars! Only better.
Alex turned to me again when the line stopped again and looked at me.
– I don’t like it, – she looked at me, – You are acting too excited. Something will happen.
– What? – I asked, – I will see my daughter for the first time in two years! Shouldn’t I be happy about this?
“I knew it was a mistake,” she frowned, “People told me, but I said Dustin wouldn’t do anything to hurt me. .. and I really believed it!”
– What are you talking about? I asked, having absolutely no idea what she was talking about.
– Those people who take care of the baby…, – said Alex, – They will try to stop you from leaving, once we get there, …they will try to do something to take you away from me. That’s your plan, right? The cops are probably already waiting for us to enter the house!
– Alex, you’re talking nonsense! – I took her by the hands and tried to calm her down, – No one is going to do anything to you, I promise! I won’t let them! I love you, you know.
And I really said what I thought at that moment. I was a dumb ass. I’ve been fucking brainwashed too much.
– No, – she shook her head, – No, that’s not right. We cannot do this. We won’t fly.
She said these words, and on the last syllable, it was as if I had been unplugged. My eyes just widened as I stood there frozen in place…and she bent down to crawl under the seat belts, climbing out of the queue. ..and taking her suitcase with her!
– Alex, WAIT! – I threw myself under the same separating belt and quickly followed her, dragging the suitcase behind me; my eyes were already full of tears. – You promised! It was YOUR idea!
– I know, but I changed my mind… – she clicked her heels on the floor, moving quickly forward, – I’m sorry.
– Forgive? – finally, I rushed after her and pulled her by the hands, stopping her and forcing her to look at me, – Sew your apologies ON YOUR ASS! We are flying! I told Cathy I’m on my way! She is waiting for me! You can’t just CHANGE YOUR MIND NOW!
– I can do any FUCK I want! she shouted in my face, – YOU BELONG TO ME! Now follow me in the car, BITCH!
She extended her hand, gesturing to stay close to her.
– Nice, – I said, – It’s so important to you that I listen to your every word. NO!
And she yanked her hand out of mine and kept walking…and I didn’t follow her. My eyes were full of tears and my legs began to tremble……she really wasn’t going anywhere. And I didn’t fly! My heart, which was so alive and happy a few seconds ago, was now as dead as a stone… except that I felt pain that crippled me.
Alex walked a couple of feet, stopped and turned to me, … her eyes were full of hatred and darted deadly glances at me.
– I said – let’s go, bitch! She gave me a glare.
I silently shook my head a couple of times, and one tear rolled out of my eye when my voice returned.
– No, – I almost whimpered, – No, I won’t go with you. I promised we would come! You let me tell my daughter I’m on my way! I’m GOING to see her! Give me my ticket and I’ll fly alone!
– You’re acting so bad right now, Dustin, you know that, don’t you? she asked. “You just said NO to me…twice!”
– I don’t care …, – at that moment I cried more from anger than from resentment, – I won’t let my daughter get upset! Not for Christmas! Isn’t it enough that I can’t even see her? But now you are doing IT! This is fucking cruel, Alex. If you want to hurt me, fine, hurt ME. ..but don’t do that to my daughter. I’m flying!
I turned around and dragged my suitcase towards the queue we were standing in. Now there was no one in it … and I began to walk along the separating belts, and Alex remained outside and asked me:
– Are you flying? With what? You have no credit card, no cash, you have NOTHING! And even if you are going to fly, then good luck with your search for a flight NOW, on Christmas Eve!
– See you, Alex! – I ignored her words, – Merry Christmas!
– Oooh…, – judging by the voice, Alex was very angry, – Are you going to play this little game, bitch? Are you going to show me your testosterone? Okay…I’ll play with you.
I went up to the ticket manager and she smiled at me, … a little wider than decency required, … but I just asked her:
– How much is a ticket for a flight to Florida?
– Return flight or one way? the blonde asked, typing a request into the computer. Excellent.
I looked at Alex and chuckled.
– One way.
– Oh, fuck you, – Alex spoke and looked like Satan now. But I wasn’t afraid of her. I was glad it happened. Now I see what it really is. I thought she loved me, and worse than that, I thought I loved her. Please! All I saw right now was a bitch trying to hurt my daughter. I’ve already hurt her enough, and I’m not going to add more to her. And even if it killed me, I was going to fly to her.
– Two hundred and seventy-one dollars for a one-way ticket …, – the girl told me, – And there are a couple of flights for this late evening – at 00.30 and at 02.30 at night, there are a couple of seats left for both flights.
– Thank you, – I smiled, – I’ll be back.
– I’d hurry if I were you, – she said a little worriedly, – They can be sold out very quickly, because the holidays.
– I understand, – I grinned back at her, – Thank you. Merry Christmas.
I walked away and began to look around like a hawk… in search of prey.
– What the fuck do you think you’re doing? “Alex followed me, trying to act smug… when in reality she was… desperate.
– Do you really think that I can’t earn two hundred and seventy one dollars in a couple of hours? – I asked, quickly heading forward, – I CAN! YOU taught me this, remember?
I took off my jacket, then tore off my T-shirt and put on the black leather jacket again, exposing my bare chest. I took a few steps and began to smile at every woman who made eyes at me.
Where is the woman who drooled over me while we were in line? I bet she’d pay three hundred dollars for me to go to the ladies’ room with her. The business promised to be too easy.
I’m sure I can find at least five women at the airport who would want me to fuck them. And now… where are you girls?
– DUSTIN! – Alex hissed at my back, – You are EXACTLY dead, do you hear me?
I ignored her and walked towards a woman who appeared to be in her fifties. She sat alone and looked like a very tired businesswoman in a suit, … a sort of “Miss Career”, … and she perked up the second I sat down next to her and smiled.
– It’s busy near you, right? I asked. – Because you are too beautiful to sit here alone.
She smiled at me and said:
– No, it’s not busy here. I am alone… or I WAS alone.
– I didn’t disturb you? I asked warmly, smiling my most seductive smile at her. My jacket opened a little wider as I leaned towards her, “Do you want me to leave?”
– NO, don’t leave! she squeaked, blushing desperately, … and becoming sixteen years younger right before my eyes. She is mine.
– I must admit that I saw you a few minutes ago …, – I said softly, and stared straight into her eyes, – I tried to think of something smart to say, … after all, so many stupid things are usually said when meeting, … but I knew that you are too smart to “fall for” all this nonsense. But I would like to at least hear your voice. He’s as sexy as you are…I knew that.
She couldn’t take her eyes off me and exhaled:
– What kind of introduction words did you think about?
Oh, she wanted to hear a few more words, . ..ok, …that should make her laugh, and then I’ll tell her how beautiful her laugh and smile is.
– A few unfortunate phrases…, – I shook my head and blushed a little, – My favorite was: “Can I take a picture of you … to show Santa what I want for Christmas?”.
She laughed…and I laughed with her…and then she said with a giggle:
– I like this one…it’s holiday oriented.
– All girls fall for this shit, – I shared. “I prefer women more…strong, confident…those with whom there is no need to play games…”
She swallowed at my words and I ran my finger along the edge of her jaw.
– The truth is… that I consider you to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen,… incredible eyes,… a damn sexy laugh,… a stunning smile… mouth, … taking a deep breath, … and then I brought my lips to her ear and began to whisper words of love to her in Italian. I heard her moan softly, trying to be quiet.
I whispered to her in Italian that I would like to be her forever. .. but even if we only have one night, I would give my soul to make love to her…
I knew she didn’t understand what I was saying to her… in Italian it sounded fucking sexy.
She exhaled heavily and grabbed my hair at the back of my head, looking straight into my eyes.
– I know Italian…, – she whispered, – Come on, I’ll get a hotel room in five minutes.
I smiled and she grabbed me hard, kissing me on the lips. I hated the thought of hurting her…but I could give her a lot of pleasure…and be nice to her…and when I left…I could just steal one of her credit cards from her…or some cash…to spend it just on the ticket and hotel…and then I’d break and throw away the credit card…and if she was married, she’d never stalk me…she certainly wouldn’t want to be caught cheating.
She didn’t even know my name…she didn’t even ask me my name! Crap! She must be married… and single. What’s wrong with men these days? Damn, make your women happy! Maybe then guys like me won’t have to do what we do to make a living.
Hell, maybe she’ll even give me money…when we’re done and I tell her my sad story about not having enough money to get to Mom and Dad for the holidays…about sleeping at the airport , …and just flew in from AfPeter where he worked in the program “Doctors Without Borders”.
The truth is, you don’t always have to tell people you’re a prostitute…you can just make up a damn good story…and put on a cute boy face. Alex taught me this. Now most of the people I worked with understood after the word “GO” that I was a whore who was sold and bought, … but women like this … would not understand a prostitute who addresses them. It’s better to lie. And after she had come five or six times, she would have listened to whatever I had to say to her…and would have given me whatever I wanted. It was as easy as taking candy from a child.
I didn’t like doing that, …but at that moment I was desperate. And I was pressed for time.
– DUSTIN! Alex came back up my ass when my new woman and I got up.
The woman looked at Alex, apparently afraid she was my wife or something.
– Mom! – I called her, – What are YOU doing here?
This angered Alex even more. Eat it bitch.
But Alex always had his own trump card up his sleeve.
She grabbed my ear and twisted it, and when I screamed, she said to the woman who was holding my hand just a second ago:
– Do you know that this boy is only sixteen? SIXTEEN! YOU FUCKING SECURER OF YOUNGER! UB
