“Gardens of the King”: the secrets of relaxation in the resort of Santa Maria in Cuba

Pelicans on the beach, Cuban cuisine, rum tastings and pina colada, a real wedding and a complete SPA- relaxation is the minimum set available for a Russian tourist going to Santa Maria. Our correspondent shares the secrets of the hotels of this Cuban resort and personal impressions.

THE NEWEST GARDENS OF THE KING

In 2022, a whole network of resorts in the Jardines del Rey archipelago – the “Gardens of the King”, located on the islands of Santa Maria, Las Brujas and Ensenachos, will begin to operate in Cuba. These islands belong to the protected ecosystem of Buenavista Bay, which is a Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO.

On the territory of the reserve, the sky merges with the sea

The three islands mentioned are not yet as well-known on the Russian market as the nearby island of Cayo Coco, but they have every chance of becoming one of the popular holiday destinations in Cuba for Russians.

The tour operator PEGAS Touristik, which flies to Cayo Coco, can already calculate holidays in some hotels in Santa Maria. The tour operator is preparing to start a larger expansion in this region of Cuba as soon as flight programs to Santa Clara Airport open.

At the invitation of PEGAS Touristik, our correspondent visited the III International Forum Destinos Gaviota-2021 last December and examined the hotels and beaches of Santa Maria together with travel agents.

The big plus of this new resort is innovations that you don’t see often elsewhere in Cuba. Mostly hotels on Santa Maria are chain hotels, many of them opened just a couple of years ago, and their rooms and territory are distinguished by interesting design solutions.

Bathtub right in the room – an interesting trend in modern hotel design

In addition, on the territory of the hotels of all three islands, of which there are more than 20, there is free Internet. And, although its speed is not yet as high as Russian tourists would like, many functions – for example, online ordering of drinks at a bar – are already available and convenient. Over time, a fully Russified application for each hotel will appear here.

HOTELS FOR HOLIDAYS WITH CHILDREN OR ADULTS ONLY

Hotels in Santa Maria, as in many other resort areas in Cuba, are of two formats – family-friendly for staying with children, or vice versa, intended only for adult travelers.

If the area of the hotel is large, then both of these formats can be combined in it, while the buildings and even restaurants that work for regular meals will be divided into zones.

The family format involves accommodation with children under 16-18 years old (the upper age limit must be checked with the hotel itself). Here, in addition to connecting rooms and family rooms, there are many other facilities for children – shallow pools, game systems and playgrounds:

Many places have kids clubs and special animations:

Hotels for adults suggest a more measured pastime and sometimes a rich nightlife.

Also, the rooms “for adults” are distinguished by a bolder design, and the complexes – by an unusual architectural solution. For example, some of the buildings may be located in the real jungle.

The most expensive adults only hotels offer luxury vacations and their own concierge service. Such services can also be in large hotels – then tourists live in a separate building with a concierge. By the way, in a number of hotels the concierges already speak Russian.

THE BEST RELAX ON THE MOST ECO-FRIENDLY ISLAND

A special feature of Santa Maria and the other two islands is respect for the environment.

Even the nearly 50 km long El Pedraplén dam leading here, which is considered one of the largest causeways in the world, was built taking into account the movement of ocean currents and other natural aspects. She received the Alcantara Civil Engineering Award and has kept corals, mangroves and the entire local ecosystem intact.

Thanks to this, today Santa Maria is one of the few islands in Cuba where you can see pelicans just by walking along the beach of the hotel.

Following tradition, many hotels on Santa Maria are ready to offer tourists a real relaxation vacation with restorative SPA treatments and work with energy balance.

Here, for example, there will be no noisy parties or animations, scooter rides and other “loud” entertainment. But guests will be offered snorkeling, yoga and stretching:

Qigong breathing exercises under the guidance of a professional instructor and a unique “energy massage” are also popular.

A special place in relaxation is occupied by SPA-programs, in which the emphasis is on water procedures.

And also on various kinds of massages – relaxing, tonic, stimulating.

SPA are often ordered for two, so cosmetics are for women and men

SPA zones are often separate complexes with very beautiful architecture and territory.

Even the design of hotels promotes privacy and relaxation – many rooms are made in natural colors and repeat the folk motifs of Cuba.

And of course, relaxation is facilitated by a special architectural solution, where even in a small area you can create the privacy of buildings.

REAL WEDDING

Unlike many other wedding destinations, in Cuba you can get married quite officially with the subsequent recognition of the legality of the ceremony in Russia. This phenomenon significantly “rejuvenates” the target audience of the resort.

The main organizers of weddings in Santa Maria are hotels that provide all the necessary services to young people and help with paperwork.

The language of the ceremony is Spanish, and it is better to order simultaneous translation into Russian in advance. But with photographers, it’s easier – there are quite a lot of Russian-speaking photographers working in Cuba, whose profiles and services are quite accessible on the network. If desired, you can order the appropriate musical accompaniment.

For the bride, the hotels provide various wedding services – dress care, makeup and wedding hair.

The bride will never be left behind in the resorts of Santa Maria

The wedding ceremony is most often held on the beach – many hotels have special pavilions for this, “leaving” into the ocean.

One of the most solemn moments of the ceremony

And you can also hold a ceremony in a beautiful area in the park area.

The park is ideal for couples who want to celebrate another anniversary

After the official part, the newlyweds are offered a buffet with a bottle of sparkling wine and a wedding cake if desired. You can also order a banquet or just spend this day together in the SPA-center.

A small buffet always beautifully completes the marriage ceremony

And of course, the room of the newlyweds is always decorated with flowers, and the bed and even the bathroom are sprinkled with their petals.

Everything reminds the newlyweds of the solemn event

AUTHENTIC FOOD AND RUM JOURNEY

Perhaps one of the most interesting things for tourists in Santa Maria will be the NATIVA brand, which is promoted by the Gaviota hotel chain. This brand assumes the preservation of authentic Cuban cuisine, but taking into account the latest trends in world gastronomy.

The main emphasis here is on tradition – for example, on an interesting combination of Spanish and African cuisine, Caribbean specialties, as well as on products that are grown directly in the region.

With post-pandemic shipping difficulties and import restrictions, this trend has also become cost-effective.

Nativa – Cuban authentic gastronomic trend

So, in Santa Maria hotels that implement NATIVA standards, there will always be a huge amount of fresh seafood. They are served mainly for lunch, as they often lose their flavor by dinner time.

In restaurants all inclusive seafood menu changes every day

Also, tourists will find a large selection of meat and meat products, especially pork, which is grown here in literally every home. A traditional Cuban recipe is a pig on a spit. And the traditional side dish to it is buckwheat with black beans.

In Cuba, you can try a huge number of local fruits and juices. Depending on the season, you can test annona, acerola, guava, caimita, mamonchillo and more familiar coconuts, bananas, oranges, etc.

.

Cuban chefs know how to surprise with the art of carving

By the way, some fruits grow right on the territory of the hotel and often end up in the kitchen from there.

Bananas at Paradisus Los Cayos

Also in Cuba there will always be a huge selection of desserts with recipes from all over the world – from English puddings to the usual cakes.

The types of desserts are unique and rarely repeated in other hotels

By the way, many hotels in Santa Maria have Cuban restaurants with specially invited chefs.

Signature cocktails from the Cuban restaurant of the Playo Cayo Santa Maria Hotel

And of course, an indispensable element of Cuban cuisine is rum.

Numerous types of rum can be tasted without leaving the hotel

Depending on the art of the bartender, you can try different cocktails – traditional rum-cola, rum with spicy tomato sauce, honey rum, spiced rum, chocolate rum and much more. And of course, one of the most favorite cocktails of our tourists is pina colada.

Pina colada can even be non-alcoholic – rum is added at the end.

OVER 20 EXCURSIONS TO CHOOSE

Finally, it is worth going to Santa Maria for interesting excursions, the list of which can include several dozen destinations.

In the first place among tourists is an excursion to the capital of Cuba – Havana. They go there on a small plane (the airport is located on the island of Las Brujas), and spend 2 days traveling, spending the night in Havana.

The second most popular sightseeing destination is Santa Clara, an important city in Cuban history. It was here that the Cuban revolution of the middle of the last century won its first serious victory, and the ashes of Che Guevara are buried in the mausoleum.

The Mausoleum of Che Guevara is open seven days a week and is guarded by the military

A trip to Santa Clara is an opportunity to see the real Cuba with famous retro cars and the most interesting souvenirs.

Old cars are not a museum exhibit, but transport for the whole family

With children it is worth going to the local dolphinarium. In addition to the performance, tourists are offered a special interactive experience – they will have to go down into the water and get a real “dolphin kiss”. Trained animals really jump out of the water for every visitor.

Local dolphinarium can give a lot of positive emotions

And for a large company, it is worth organizing a sea trip on a catamaran. Such an excursion lasts all day, and tourists are not left without attention for a minute. For example, they are offered to set sail with the crew:

Only men participate in this activity

… go snorkeling with a mask and fins to coral reefs,

After returning on board, the pipe remains as a souvenir

… and spend a wonderful day with a buffet on the beach, swimming in the ocean, relaxing and dancing.

The catamaran does not moor to the shore, but you can reach it in shallow water
