There were 7,651 households, of which 25.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40. 9% were married couples, 16.2% of female families lived without husbands, and 40.0% were non-families. 35.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18, and the average family size is 2.83.

In the city, the population was spread out: 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 20, 2% are aged 65 or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 women, there were 82.0 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 77.1 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,122, and the median income for a family was $38,110. The median income for males was $35,780 compared to $23,239 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,912. About 16.4% of families and 20.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those aged 65 and over.

Wicca Church & School

Wicca Church & School was founded by Gavin Frost and Yvonne Frost in 1968. It was the first federally recognized church of the religion known as Wicca in the United States. History

The Wicca Church was founded in 1968. ^[1] Gavin Frost was a British-born aerospace engineer. ^[2] While working for an aerospace company in southern England’s Salisbury Plain – an area teeming with prehistoric monuments – he became interested in the druids. ^[3] His wife Yvonne was an American with a background in Spiritualism. ^[2] He then claimed to have been initiated into a Wiccan group in St. Louis, Missouri. ^[3] While living in St. Louis, they developed a correspondence course to teach Wicca to others, advertising the course as “The School of Wicca”. ^[4] They claimed that by spreading their religious teachings in the form of a correspondence course, they reached a wider range of people than the initiation-based forms of Wicca, and that this was necessary for the religion to become a “strong religious force.” “. ^[2] They strongly believed that Wicca should be presented in public, believing that the secrecy practiced by some Wiccans groups caused mistrust and persecution from the public. ^[3]

The Frosts adopted the term “Wicca” in the late 1960s as it became increasingly common in the pagan witchcraft community as the name of their religion. ^[6] The couple resisted the use of the term “pagan” until the late 1970s. ^[2] In 1975, Yvonne stated that “I don’t consider myself a pagan. I do not worship any natural deity. I rise to the nameless, which has no gender. ^[7]

With his attorneys, Gavin obtained religious recognition for his school from the Internal Revenue Service in 1972; this led to his Church becoming the first recognized Wicca church in the United States. ^[4] Later that year they began working on their church and school full-time. ^[4] Gavin named himself archbishop and Yvonne bishop, and they awarded themselves. Doctor of Divinity through the Church. ^[4] The couple moved first to Salem, Missouri – where they had a pig farm ^[7] – and then New Bern, NC in 1974 ^[4] They tried to create a survival community there, but it didn’t work. ^[4] In the late 1970s, they began holding an annual “Samhain Seminar” which featured seminars, rituals, and lectures, mostly for distance learning students. ^[8] In 1996 they moved to Hinton, West Virginia. ^[4] They subsequently moved to West Virginia in 1993, where Gavin moved to Sidhe in 2016.

In 1985, the Church of Wicca was involved in the Dettmer v. Landon case, during which the District Court of Virginia ruled that Wicca was a legal religion under US law. The Virginia prison authorities appealed, and in 1986 Judge J. Butzner of the Federal Court of Appeals upheld the original decision. ^[4] This made the Wiccan Church the only federally recognized Wiccan church whose religious status was upheld in a federal appeals court. ^[4]

In the American Wiccan and wider modern Pagan community, Frost has been at the center of various controversies, especially on issues such as homosexuality and theology. ^[9] Wiccan Margo Adler suggested that much of this controversy arose from Gavin’s “wry and rather bizarre sense of humor and his tendency to say anything to get someone up”, which she believed led to that Morozov was often “misunderstood”. ^[9] In person, she thought that Frosts “has always been delightful”, with Gavin being “kind and humorous” and Yvonne being “outspoken and even a little prim”. ^[7]

They released a book called The Witch’s Bible , which caused outrage in the Wiccan community. ^[9] Many critics called it “a witch’s book”. ^[9] Many of the core teachings presented in the book, such as the emphasis on the existence of a genderless monotheistic deity, were completely at odds with mainstream Wiccan faith. ^[9] Many Wiccans were outraged by the word B as its name suggests, suggesting that it carried some form of power within the Wicca community. ^[7] His comments on race and gender also caused controversy. ^[10]

Faith and doctrine

The Church of Wicca defines Wicca as a monotheistic religion. ^[11] Gavin expressed the opinion that there is one God, abstract, unknowable and not in need of worship. ^[7] This is one of the teachings that distinguishes it from other Wiccan traditions. ^[3] Unlike many other Wiccan groups, there was no particular emphasis on female divinity or femininity, and Gavin called beliefs about ancient matriarchy a “Marxist heresy”. ^[12]

He also expressed a belief in “stone gods”, “idols”, which are created by people as a storehouse for energy that can then be used for magical purposes. ^[7]

The Church taught that the Astral Realm, which they called the “Sidhe”, consisted of ten levels. ^[3] They taught that every person has a soul that goes through a progressive system of reincarnation although this can be recognized. ^[13] According to Morozov, overpopulation led to the incarnation of “lower souls” on Earth. ^[13]

The church taught kundalini sexual practices. These include “introitus”, where sex without orgasm was considered a form of submission to God. ^[13]

Influence and Legacy

Tens of thousands of students started the Twelve-year course at the Wicca School, although only a few thousand completed it due to the rigor of the course. ^[9] In 2006, Wiccan journalist Margot Adler suggested that the School of Wicca could be responsible for the formation of as many as one hundred covens. ^[9]

Curriculum

The school’s curriculum includes classes in various subjects related to both Wicca as a religion and occult and metaphysical studies and practices in general. These classes begin with a “Basic Witchcraft” course that lasts “a year and a day”. Other topics include: Advanced Celtic Witchcraft and Shamanism, Astral Travel, Astrology, Graphology, Mystical Awareness, Natural Wicca Survey, Practice Witchcraft, Forecast, Psychic and Herbal Healing, and Tantric Yoga. ^[14] Most of the course is available to the student on video.

Charters

Church and school chartered by several other churches and groups. ^[15] In the early years of the Church, ordinations to individuals, and sometimes charters in the church, were sometimes offered solely on the basis of church correspondence courses. List of colleges and universities in West Virginia

There are 44 colleges and universities in the US state. West Virginia are listed in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. These institutions include two research universities, five master’s universities and fourteen undergraduate colleges, as well as twenty-one associate colleges. In addition, there are three institutions classified as specialized institutions. ^[1]

The oldest surviving institution of higher learning in West Virginia is Bethany College, founded on March 2, 1840 by Alexander Campbell. ^{[2] [3] [4]} Marshall University and West Liberty University were both established in 1837, but as private subscription schools. ^{[5] [6]} Founded in 1867, West Virginia University is the largest public institution of higher education by enrollment, with 29 students as of spring 2013707 students. ^[7] East West Virginia Community and Technical College is the smallest in the state with 822 students. ^[7] The school has 1549 students. Wheeling Jesuit University is the largest traditional private institution of higher learning, while Valley College – Princeton is the smallest in the state with 72 students. ^[7] The American Public University System, a private, for-profit, distance learning institution based in Charles Town, has the largest enrollment of any higher education institution in West Virginia, with 31,331 students. ^[7] Catholic Distance University, a fully interactive non-profit university in Charles Town, teaches undergraduate students in the liberal arts and theology, and graduate students in theology and educational ministry.

There are two state universities in West Virginia: West Virginia State University and West Virginia University. ^[8] West Virginia University is also the only university in the state to participate in the National Space College and Scholarship Program. ^[9] In addition, there are two historically black colleges and universities in West Virginia that are members of the Thurgood Marshall College Foundation: Bluefield State College and West Virginia State University. ^{[10] [11]}

Beckley is home to three universities: the University of West Virginia Institute of Technology, the University of Charleston-Beckley, and a branch of Concord University. In addition, a branch of Valley College is located in Beckley; New River Community and Technical College is in the nearby community of Beaver; and the non-profit, non-denominational Appalachian Bible College is located just outside the city limits, in nearby Bradley. Infrastructure Transportation The city is the regional center of more than 100,000 Southwest Virginians. It is the ninth largest city in West Virginia, second in population to Martinsburg, followed by Clarksburg.
