Nature Preschool | Cleveland Metroparks

2023-24 Virtual Open House

Our 2023-24 Virtual Open House has ended, but you can view a recorded version below. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our popular Cleveland Metroparks Nature Preschool Program. We will discuss our curriculum and education philosophy, take a look at what a typical day looks like, and learn about the registration process.

2023 Virtual Open House

WHAT IS NATURE PRESCHOOL?

Cleveland Metroparks Nature Preschool combines the best practices of early childhood education with those of environmental education. Our mission is:

Fostering healthy development, connecting children to nature,

and inspiring the next generation.

Our goal is to provide an exceptional child-centered and nature-based preschool environment. We believe that by immersing children into nature at an early age, they develop a deep-seated appreciation and understanding of the natural world and their place within it. We believe that children “learn by doing” and that the natural world provides unique opportunities to spark curiosity, problem solve, and build relationships.

Our inquiry-based curriculum utilizes the Ohio Department of Education’s Early Learning Content Standards and uses a whole-child philosophy to promote growth across all developmental domains. This helps develop skills necessary to transition to kindergarten, such as:

  • Fostering a sense of wonder
  • Nurturing a sense of self and independence
  • Encouraging problem-solving and reflection
  • Instilling confidence

The daily schedule provides opportunities for children to work in both large and small group settings, with ample time for children to explore our outdoor classroom. A typical daily schedule is:

8:30 – 9:15 WELCOME and FREE PLAY
9:15 – 9:30 GATHERING
9:30 – 10:00 RESTROOM AND SNACK
10:00 – 10:45 HIKE and EXPLORE
10:45 – 11:15 FREE PLAY and SMALL GROUPS
11:15 – 11:30 GATHERING and GOODBYE

Through their play, children build relationships with their peers, their teachers, and the world around them

On April 25, 2023, as part of the All-Russian “Ecolyte Day – Young Defenders of Nature”, pupils of our preschool educational institution took an active part. This event was held with the aim of further developing environmental education, environmental culture and enlightenment in preschool educational organizations, as a result, the preservation of nature, its flora and fauna, as well as with the aim of developing in children the inner need for love for nature and, as a result, careful attitude to it, education in the child of a culture of love for nature and awareness by the child of the need to preserve, protect and save the nature of his native land.

Teachers have drawn up and implemented a plan for the following activities:

  1. Remember the heroes and the Ecolyat logo.
  2. Conversation on the topic: “Protect nature”, “Forbidding rules of nature”
  3. Ecological trail Ecolyat (territory of preschool educational institution).
  4. Creative workshop:

– a collective plasticine craft – images of fairy-tale heroes Ecolyat;

“Ecolyata – Christmas Tree, Naughty, Clever and Tikhonya”;

Photo report on Ecolate Day.

The work began with the fact that they remembered the heroes and the Ecolyat logo.

After that, we walked along the ecological path of the Ecolyat Path kindergarten, examined all the plants growing on the territory and cleared the plantings of debris. Children expanded and consolidated their knowledge about flowers, trees, shrubs and herbs of their native land.

During the conversation, about how to protect nature and the rules of behavior in nature, the children remembered and consolidated their knowledge.

The brightest and most positive response from children was caused by the competitions: the best story with fairy-tale characters Ecolyates and the drawing competition “Ecolytes are friends and defenders of Nature!”. Children showed their imagination, imagination and creativity.

Particular attention was paid to the problem of garbage in nature, in order to reduce it, a didactic game “Learning to sort garbage” was held. The guys also put in order their area for games in kindergarten.

A creative workshop was organized in the group, where the guys made a collective craft of Ecolyat images.

The activities carried out caused an emotional response and cognitive interest in the children!

A child with autism can be born in any family, regardless of wealth, social status, place of residence or habits of the parents. There is no insurance against autism or knowing in advance whether your future child will be autistic or neurotypical (“normal”).

What is autism? Why puzzles and blue color?

The average person knows a little about autism. Information about this disease is the most incomplete and contradictory. Autistic disorders can be expressed in varying degrees. Some people with autism speak little, others do not speak at all, they may be highly intelligent and mentally retarded, some ignore human society and others do not, some have pronounced behavioral problems, while others have only their individual signs. That’s why the autism symbol is a jigsaw puzzle that doesn’t fit into the big picture

April 2 was Autism Awareness Day.

Our kindergarten did not stand aside. First of all, parents were informed about this: through an announcement in the parent’s corner, and through the booklets “The world is one for all”, which the children themselves handed out to their parents.

The following activities were carried out in groups:

Talks were held with the children and a video was shown on the topic “My brother from the moon”.

Then the guys drew a collective work “The world is one for all” ,

“I am a teacher”

Essay. “I am a teacher”

Essay on the topic: “I am a teacher”.

Rybakova Natalia Vladimirovna,
teacher
Kindergarten No. 243

“The best way to make children good –
is to make them happy.”
(K.Weber)

Where to start? Probably thanks! Thanks to fate for the fact that my life is so folded. I am a teacher!!! I am proud of this! There are many professions in the world, but this profession is not chosen, SHE chooses! People bearing this proud title are united by one thing – they gladly give their hearts to children and cannot imagine their lives without it!
So why did I become an educator? My interest in this profession appeared in childhood. I really liked to play with my friends in kindergarten, where they were pupils, well, and I, of course, a teacher. I wanted to tell them what new things I learned in kindergarten, what I learned thanks to my smart and caring teachers. I copied their intonation and actions.
Educator – for me it is rather not a profession, but a way of life. Every day I come to the children, we communicate, study, and every time a new world, a new life opens up for me.
Surprisingly, working with children makes it possible for a person to show all the best that is inherent in him, all his abilities. Someone wants to be a singer – but the voice is not the same, dreams of being an actor, but does not dare, thinks about the glory of the artist, but the abilities are not the same …. And in kindergarten, the teacher can realize all his desires – and sing, and dance, and draw, and be an artist. Well, what folk artist can boast of two roles within 2 hours?! And the teacher can be Baba – Yaga on one matinee, and Snow White on the other! And he will always find the most grateful spectators, the most independent judges – in the face of children.
The educator is the first person, after the mother, who meets the children on their life path. For me, my profession is an opportunity to constantly be in the sincere world of childhood, in the daily land of fairy tales and fantasy. And you involuntarily think about the importance of the profession of an educator when you see in the open, trusting eyes of children the delight and expectation of something new, catching my every word, my look and gesture. Looking into these children’s eyes, you understand that they need you, that you are the whole universe for them, support them with your love, give the warmth of your heart.
Working in a kindergarten, I never cease to be amazed at how different, spontaneous, funny, amazingly smart all children are! Each child is unique in its own way, each of them is both a talented artist and an inquisitive observer. He is open to knowledge, beauty and kindness, reacts sharply to lies and injustice, and if he really loves, then honestly, without reservations, and if he is rude in return, then look for a flaw in yourself – you won’t be mistaken, because my kids still don’t know insincere feelings , and they are pure and honest before the world, they do not know how to hide their feelings, unlike adults!
Working as an educator for fifteen years, I can say that there is no better profession than mine! It makes me forget all the grief and resentment, gives me a feeling of eternal youth and the opportunity to be a small child myself!
Well, what is the main thing? And the main thing in our profession is to love children, to love just like that, for nothing, to give them every moment a piece of your heart, and to love them as your own, without compromises and conditions. The main thing is to love, understand and feel the child, accept him as he is, without suppressing his personality, independence, activity, in a word, respect the child’s right to be himself.
I am allowed by fate to be close to our future – with our children! Every mother is happy when she re-lives the period of childhood with her child. And I was lucky to enjoy this age many times, each time “teaching others, learning myself”!
My principles of work:
• don’t be intrusive – everyone has their own world of interests and hobbies;
• give children more autonomy and choice;
• not entertainment, but entertainment and passion as the basis of the emotional tone of the lesson;
• to be able to take the position of a child, to see in him a personality, individuality;
• help the child to be socially important and successful;
• when submitting requirements for pupils, check whether you meet them yourself; everything new is fun!
My pedagogical philosophy is very simple “In order to illuminate others with light, you need to carry the Sun in yourself” (Romain Rolland).
