90,000 Phoenix rises from the ashes. The future of “Arizona”

Phoenix rising from the ashes. So now they call what is happening with the club “Arizona Coyotes” (the former name – “Phoenix”).

A hopeless underdog who hasn’t made the playoffs since 2012. True, then there was a conference final, in which the “Coyotes” lost to the future champion – “Los Angeles” (1-4 in the series). There is something to remember. But then – five years of hopelessness.

When did the revival begin?

June 12, 2017, when majority owner Andrew Burroway bought out shares from minority shareholders and became the sole owner of Arizona himself.

You remember, the situation at the Coyotes was not the easiest. The former mayor of Glendale said in the press that the club’s problems are related to the management, and not to the location of the hockey facility. That’s all – the constant sale of players, the craving for half salaries, the acquisition of “dead souls” like Chris Pronger and Pavel Datsyuk, poor attendance – a consequence of this state of affairs. There are many owners, but a clear vector is not visible. It got to the point that, according to rumors, the city authorities were thinking of terminating the stadium lease agreement with Arizona, which did not fit into any framework. An iron hand was needed. And then there was Burroway.

He immediately declared that he started following hockey since the 70s, when Philadelphia won two Stanley Cups in a row, and the Broad Street Bandits made a rustle in the league. I mean, he’s a big fan. And now, serious investments will be made in Arizona.

“I’m going to be involved in running the team. I won’t rest until we win the Stanley Cup. We have to make the whole state proud!” – the new sole proprietor declared ambitiously.

Have you noticed that it is not General Manager John Chaika who announces the fateful decisions in Arizona, but Burroway himself? This speaks volumes.

Captain Shane Dawn, 40, was poised for another season in the league. His statistics were not impressive (6+21=27 in 74 matches). But it seemed that Dawn would play forever – like Jaromir Jagr.

Video: ARI-THOR: Dawn scores 400th goal in 1500 game

“After serious consideration, we have made the decision not to offer Dawn a new contract,” said Burroway. “It’s time to focus on our youth. We have talented Rookies, the team should have a bright future.”

At the same time, no one defiled the Arizona icon. They treated Dawn very politely and even offered him a job in the club’s office. Let’s see what the veteran chooses.

Second, coach Dave Tippett was fired. This happened by mutual agreement of the parties, although the mentor still had a valid contract. He was considered one of the league’s old-timers, serving since the 2009-10 season, when Wayne Gretzky took over. Just Tippett brought the team to the conference finals. But in the last five years things have been bad.

“I would like to sincerely thank Tip for all his work for the benefit of our team,” said Burroway, referring to the coach by his nickname. “Tip is a person of character, a true leader. But we had a philosophical disagreement about how to build a new team. So we both agreed that Arizona should now have a new coach.”

Perhaps it will be 48-year-old Todd Nelson, who led the Grand Rapids last season (the Detroit farm club) and led the team to the championship in the AHL, taking the Calder Cup. If you remember, Nelson ruled Edmonton a couple of years ago, having worked 51 games in the NHL. But then the team did not reach the playoffs.

Third, Arizona traded goaltender Mike Smith to Calgary for goaltender Chad Johnson, defenseman Brandon Hickey and a draft pick. It is worth recalling that Smith represented the Coyotes at the All-Star Game in January of this year. So not just a goalkeeper left, but a cult player. The fans were upset. But they realized that perestroika had already begun, and it was impossible to stop this train flying into a brighter future.

Video: Four Lines Contest: Smith’s Shot Hits Target

During the expansion draft, Vegas took forward Teemu Pulkkinen from Arizona. But the Coyotes got a lot more. They made a trade with the Rangers for goaltender Antti Raanta and center Derek Stepan. In return, defender Anthony Deangelo went to New York, taking with him the seventh pick of the recent rookie draft.

The Rangers signed Swedish striker Lias Andersson for him. But “Arizona” managed to accumulate spades, so at number 23 they got Canadian defender Pierre-Olivier Joseph, and in the second round at number 44 they chose Swedish defender Philip Westerlund. That is, the Coyotes’ problematic line has intensified.

And when the entire hockey world was shocked that Chicago gave Artemy Panarin to Columbus, under the guise of Arizona traded defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson from the Blackhawks, giving away other defensive players – Connor Murphy and Lauren Dauphin. That is, you can see how Andrew Burroway and his staff work for the future and quality.

And this is the beginning. Ahead of July 1, when the free agent market opens. You’ll see, “Arizona” is sure to explode a couple of transfer bombs there. This is not the modest Cinderella who came to the ball in a pumpkin carriage. This is already an ambitious predator, aiming for the Stanley Cup.

Phoenix Air Quality Index (AQI) and Air Pollution in USA

      *translated using machine translation

Phoenix’s air quality averages an air quality index (AQI) score of less than 50, or “good”. Despite the clean air quality in Phoenix on an annual and monthly average, the city still experiences a number of unhealthy ozone and PM2.5 days. From 2016 to 2018, the weighted average was 46. 5 days for unhealthy air 1 . These days of pollution resulted in Phoenix failing to meet air pollution levels for ozone and PM2.5.

Phoenix tends to experience cleaner air in summer and more polluted air in winter. Temperature inversions in winter largely contribute to the fact that in these months the AQI is 2.5 times higher than in the summer months. On average, May and June are the cleanest months in Phoenix, while December and November are the most polluted.

Phoenix’s biggest air quality problem is ozone pollution. Ozone is a gaseous pollutant formed by the interaction of nitrogen oxides and organic substances under the influence of sunlight. Because ozone is not emitted directly, but is produced in the atmosphere from other pollutants, it is often considered a difficult pollutant to control.

The abundance of sunlight and heat as a requirement for ozone formation means that Phoenix’s ozone levels tend to be worse in summer than in winter (the opposite trend from Phoenix’s average pollution levels and PM2. 5 levels). In 2019, unhealthy ozone levels only occurred between May 3rd and September 13th. 2 Historically, ozone levels have always been in the “green” healthy category during the winter months.

Maricopa County, of which Phoenix is the county seat, was rated “F” and ranked 7th out of 228 included metropolitan areas for High Ozone Days by the American Lung Association’s Air Condition Report 1 . From 2016 to 2018, there was a weighted average of 39.8 days that was considered harmful for ozone only.

While Phoenix continues to struggle to meet current ozone standards, many health experts are advocating further lowering of the federal standard. They advocate that current regulations limiting ozone levels to no more than 70 ppm do not adequately protect the most vulnerable populations from adverse health effects. 3 In order for Phoenix to meet current standards and aim for even lower levels, the city must focus on its biggest ozone provider: transportation.

Phoenix live air quality data is available at the top of this page. Follow Phoenix air quality forecast data and published health guidelines to take action against pollution levels and reduce pollution levels.

What causes air pollution in Phoenix?

Since the passage of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970 and later the 1990 Amendments, there has been a significant improvement in air quality in Phoenix and much of the United States.

However, air quality in Phoenix has been deteriorating in recent years for both PM2.5 and ozone pollution. 2019 was an exception to this trend, showing improvements over 2018 and 2017.

For example, in the case of PM2.5 pollution, the Phoenix average in 2017 was 8.4 µg/m per year and 8.6 µg/m in 2018 (slight increase of 2.4% year on year). Meanwhile, in 2019, PM2.5 levels decreased by 32.6% to 5.8 μg/m , the lowest annual average since 2002.

In terms of ozone pollution, Phoenix tested 34 days of air above the Clean Air Act’s standard for ozone (70 ppb) in 2016, 48 days in 2017, and 55 days in 2018. On the other hand, 2019 showed an improvement: only 40 days above the federal standard. 2

Even with a decrease in ozone pollution in 2019, ozone levels still pose a significant risk to Phoenix residents. Sustaining ozone levels in the future depends primarily on reducing vehicle emissions, not emissions from Phoenix’s relatively small manufacturing sector. 4 Transport emissions can be further reduced by switching to more fuel-efficient, low-emission vehicles and by making public transport more accessible and attractive. Switching to electric vehicles can significantly reduce air pollution levels in Arizona, with levels of nitric oxide (a major precursor pollutant to form ozone) up to 76%, according to a study by the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP). and PM2.5 levels up to 60%. 5

Why is Phoenix’s air quality so bad?

Unhealthy air pollution in Phoenix is largely the result of traffic emissions and industry. At the same time, seasonal weather events play an important role as these impacts can interfere with the normal distribution of polluted air.

For example, the accumulation of air pollution in Phoenix during the winter is mainly the result of temperature inversions. Under normal conditions, the sun heats the earth, creating warmer air near the earth’s surface and colder air just above. Under these conditions, polluted ground air is able to rise and disperse over large areas. During a temperature inversion, usually occurring in winter, weak sunlight and colder conditions create colder air at ground level and warmer air above. When this happens, the cold polluted air near the surface is trapped or unable to rise due to the warm air above it. The result is an accumulation of pollution over time as emissions remain relatively constant, often creating a “brown haze” on the horizon.

Local winds can further exacerbate this effect by moving pollution across different parts of the valley. 6 During the day, pollution spreads more freely throughout the valley, moving up the mountains and into the surrounding Phoenix metropolitan area. At night, when the temperature drops, cold air flows from the mountains to the south, settling at the lowest point of the valley. This moving air contains pollutants from the surrounding area, concentrating them near the southern Salt River and western Phoenix.

When a temperature inversion occurs, only rain or wind can disperse cold, polluted air. Heat and sunlight in the afternoon can end the inversion, allowing pollution to dissipate, but in winter, inversions often reoccur several hours after sunset.

Warmer summer temperatures as a result of global warming could exacerbate Phoenix’s ozone problem by creating more ideal conditions for ozone to form. Temperatures across the state rose from an average of 71.3°F to 75.5°F between 1980 and 2015. 7 Phoenix is the fourth fastest warming city in the United States.

Phoenix AQI varies throughout the city and is usually higher near major roads. During the winter, West Phoenix often exhibits somewhat higher levels of air quality as a result of seasonal weather events. Use the Phoenix Air Pollution Map to see the impact of local emission sources on real-time air quality levels, and compare air quality levels with Tucson, Arizona’s second most polluted city after Phoenix.
