   Parent: I would like to quickly address the recent negative reviews. Bright Beginnings did have a rough transition year during the 2016-2017 school year. However, that transition period is over now. The 2017-2018 school year has started out so positive. The experienced BBS teachers are thrilled to be back teaching at Bright Beginnings. Their lessons are interactive and engaging and they are happy to be at work. I have been very impressed with the new teachers they have hired. My child is in one new teachers class and my child is thriving and loving school! The owners have changed how they are leading the school and they are giving more responsibilities it seems to the principal and other administrators. The new principal from last year is back and she is passionate about starting the year fresh.    Islamic education is vitally important. The Quran classes have especially improved from before, with middle and high school being taught based on skill level rather than grade. Arabic could use improvements for non-Arab speakers, along with more programs, but it is improving. Islamic Studies really depends, and a lot of the benefits come from whether the student pays attention or not, in my opinion.
   The other basic subjects, like Math and English, are just ordinary. Better than public schools, but perhaps lacking compared to other preparatory schools. Clubs and bonus hours are not too great, but considering the size of the school, I feel like that’s acceptable.

    Parent: We have loved our experience at CTA Freedom. We moved to AZ four years ago and felt so overwhelmed with how many schools there were to choose from. Open Enrollment can seem so daunting, but with the help of some friends we decided to go with CTA Freedom even though it is a bit of a commute. We love the traditional approach to learning, but even more so the staff has become family for us. The teachers have been wonderful to work on our sons education with. The administration spends quality time learning who my children are and what they need in order to feel like successful learners. My sons have embraced uniform wearing and love the friends they have on campus. I also appreciate the way CTA navigated schoolwork during the pandemic. Very commendable. 29. Junior: As a junior at NDP, I have witnessed many changes and new members (staff and students) come about. As a new school, there are bound to be many alterations as we try to find our flow. One positive of this school is the cohesiveness between teachers and students. The smaller group allows for more one-on-one and teacher/student involvement. One change I would like to see would be better communication between faculty/staff and the parents. I’ve had to relay lots of information about events, changes, scheduling, etc. to my parents when the school should play a larger role in that.   In terms of ozone pollution, Phoenix tested 34 days of air above the Clean Air Act’s standard for ozone (70 ppb) in 2016, 48 days in 2017, and 55 days in 2018. On the other hand, 2019 showed an improvement: only 40 days above the federal standard. ²

  Even with a decrease in ozone pollution in 2019, ozone levels still pose a significant risk to Phoenix residents. Sustaining ozone levels in the future depends primarily on reducing vehicle emissions, not emissions from Phoenix’s relatively small manufacturing sector. ⁴ Transport emissions can be further reduced by switching to more fuel-efficient, low-emission vehicles and by making public transport more accessible and attractive. Switching to electric vehicles can significantly reduce air pollution levels in Arizona, with levels of nitric oxide (a major precursor pollutant to form ozone) up to 76%, according to a study by the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP). and PM2.5 levels up to 60%. ⁵

  Why is Phoenix’s air quality so bad?

  Unhealthy air pollution in Phoenix is ​​largely the result of traffic emissions and industry. At the same time, seasonal weather events play an important role as these impacts can interfere with the normal distribution of polluted air.

  For example, the accumulation of air pollution in Phoenix during the winter is mainly the result of temperature inversions. Under normal conditions, the sun heats the earth, creating warmer air near the earth’s surface and colder air just above. During a temperature inversion, usually occurring in winter, weak sunlight and colder conditions create colder air at ground level and warmer air above. The result is an accumulation of pollution over time as emissions remain relatively constant, often creating a “brown haze” on the horizon.

  Local winds can further exacerbate this effect by moving pollution across different parts of the valley. ⁶ During the day, pollution spreads more freely throughout the valley, moving up the mountains and into the surrounding Phoenix metropolitan area. At night, when the temperature drops, cold air flows from the mountains to the south, settling at the lowest point of the valley. This moving air contains pollutants from the surrounding area, concentrating them near the southern Salt River and western Phoenix.

  When a temperature inversion occurs, only rain or wind can disperse cold, polluted air. Heat and sunlight in the afternoon can end the inversion, allowing pollution to dissipate, but in winter, inversions often reoccur several hours after sunset.

  Warmer summer temperatures as a result of global warming could exacerbate Phoenix’s ozone problem by creating more ideal conditions for ozone to form. Temperatures across the state rose from an average of 71.3°F to 75.5°F between 1980 and 2015. ⁷ Phoenix is ​​the fourth fastest warming city in the United States.

  Phoenix AQI varies throughout the city and is usually higher near major roads.
