  • Small ratios are maintained per CDC recommendations. We will maintain ratios lower than the Texas state standard.
  • Adherence to social distancing.
  • Frequent hand washing.
  • Facilities deep cleaned daily with hourly wipe downs.
  • Pick-up outside facility.

In addition to the handwashing, EAC Y will have hand sanitizer stations throughout the afterschool program to encourage good hand hygiene at all times.

 EAC Y Staff will reinforce handwashing during key times such as:

  • Before and after eating food;
  • After using the restroom;
  • After children blowing their nose, cough, or sneeze;
  • When hands are visibly dirty

CLEANING AND DISINFECTING PROCEDURES

EAC Y staff will clean and disinfect areas throughout afterschool programming hours.

Other cleaning and disinfecting efforts include:

  • Clean before the children arrive and after the children depart
  • Clean and disinfect toys daily

MASK POLICY

We are committed to providing a safe environment to the children in our program. We will continue to follow Austin Public Health, CDC recommendations, and local Independent School District’s guidance.  In alignment with school districts, mask use is optional but strongly encouraged for participants.

    Afterschool Parent Testimonials

    Our son is engaged and active, all while having a great time. This year is different than normal due to the abnormal circumstances related to COVID, but we’ve been really pleased.

    Presidential Meadows Parent

    My kids never want to leave! They love the counselors and enjoy the activities and help with homework provided by the Y.  It is a safe and positive environment.

    Lagos Elementary Parent

    The Y is understanding and the prices are good, especially for a single parent with one income. I can never thank you enough!

    Negley Elementary Parent

    I appreciate all the help I get from this after school program: helping the kids with homework and engaging educational activities. My son loves going to YMCA after school, and to see and know that he loves going back makes me happy. Thank you for providing us some parents like myself that need financial support in order to me to make ends meet.

    Blake Manor Elementary Parent

    The kids have a wonderful time at YMCA Afterschool. They have time for kids to do their homework, play active games in the gym, and provide snacks. The staff is nice and great with kids. My kids don’t want to leave when I pick them up. The best part is that it is right at the kids school so they don’t have to take a bus. I highly recommend YMCA afterschool care.

    Jollyville Elementary Parent

    Hard working counselors that connect with the kids – always friendly, courteous and respectful.

    Laurel Mountain Parent

    My son loves YMCA! He never wants me to pick him up early. He comes home with all kinds of crafts every day and says everyone is nice to him. As a parent what more could you want 🙂

    UT Elementary Parent

    Your counselors are warm and very caring of our children, your programs are clear and executed in a very safe manner, and my child was consistently very happy in the program. He was devastated to have to leave!

    Canyon Creek Parent

    Program is convenient and affordable. Staff help kids get homework done and provide structured activities. Kids are respected, while also holding them accountable for their actions. Great program!

    Afterschool Program Description

    What do afterschool programs offer?

    DC Public Schools (DCPS) afterschool programs allow students to participate in academic and extracurricular enrichment activities and to develop new hobbies and skills. DCPS teachers, paraprofessionals, and afterschool partner organizations provide a variety of unique programming options to students.

    Participation in high-quality afterschool programming has been proven to improve school attendance, academic achievement, graduation rates, and attitudes toward learning. Students attending two and a half hours of afterschool programs each day gain the equivalent of nearly two months of learning time.

    What are the afterschool program hours?

    The afterschool program starts at the end of the school day and ends at 6:15 pm each full school day (unless otherwise noted by your school).

    What grades can participate?

    OSTP programs serve students in PK3 through grade 5 at elementary schools and PK3 through grade 8 at education campuses. At River Terrace, all grades are eligible. At Hart MS and Jefferson Academy MS, the program serves grades 6-8. The grades that the OSTP program may serve at each site may vary, please contact your school to determine which service provider will serve your student’s specific grade. We have listed the known providers on the list of 55 schools.

    Is food provided?

    Supper/snack is provided to all students free of charge.

    How do I register my student?

    What do I do if I have trouble enrolling for OSTP Afterschool?

    Contact your school registrar or Out of School Time Programs at [email protected] or (202) 442-5002 to ask for assistance.

    Is there a fee?

    For School Year 22-23, co-payment fees for the OSTP program are discontinued and children participate for free. At some schools, other afterschool providers serving students in certain grades may charge a fee. We have listed the known providers on the list of 55 schools. Not all afterschool program providers charge fees.

    How is the afterschool program evaluated?

    The OSTP program is funded mostly by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant (21CCLC) from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). The SY19-20 21CCLC Afterschool End of Year Evaluation Report presents the program objectives set by OSSE and DCPS and evaluates whether the objectives were met during the 2019-2020 school year which was the most recent year of DCPS OSTP afterschool program data. In addition, the presentation contains important information about the 21CCLC grant, program demographics, key findings from the external evaluator, afterschool program strengths, and areas of focus for SY21-22. The evaluation report for SY21-22 will be completed in late fall of 2022. Questions may be sent to Margot Berkey, specialist for the 21CCLC grant, at  [email protected].

    Pre-school education programs

    Childhood is the most important period of human life, not preparation for the future life, but real, bright, original, unique life. And on how childhood passed, who led the child by the hand in childhood, what entered his mind and heart from the outside world, it depends to a decisive extent on what kind of person today’s baby will become.

    Basic pre-school education programs.

    Brief overview – Kindergarten and child

    The quality and effectiveness of pre-school education are mediated by many factors, among which the educational program is far from the last. Since modern preschool educational institutions are represented by diversity, and parents get the opportunity to choose among kindergartens of various specializations and directions, the main programs of preschool education are also quite diverse.

    The law “On Education” of the Russian Federation states that the staff of the preschool educational institution has the right to independently develop or choose from existing programs those that most fully comply with the conditions and principles of work of this preschool institution. This is not to say that this or that program is better or worse – they are all designed with the necessary requirements in mind, and each of them has its own merits.

    Let’s take a brief look at the main programs of preschool education that are common in kindergartens in the Russian Federation.

    What are the main pre-school education programs?

    All main programs of preschool education can be divided into two types – complex (or general education) and the so-called partial (specialized, basic programs of preschool education with a narrower and more pronounced focus).

    Basic pre-school education programs complex type take into account a holistic approach to the harmonious and comprehensive development of the child. According to such programs, education, training and development take place in all directions in accordance with existing psychological and pedagogical standards.

    Partial basic programs of pre-school education assume the main emphasis on any one direction in the development and upbringing of the child. In this case, a comprehensive approach to the implementation of preschool education is ensured by the competent selection of several partial programs.

    Comprehensive core preschool programs

    Origins is a program that pays due attention to the development of the child’s personality in accordance with his age. The authors offer 7 basic personal characteristics that must be developed in a preschooler. The educational program “Origins”, like other main programs of preschool education, takes into account the comprehensive and harmonious development of the preschooler and makes it a priority.

    “Rainbow” – in this program you will find 7 basic activities that are typical for a preschooler. They include play, construction, mathematics, physical education, fine arts and manual labor, musical and plastic arts, speech development and acquaintance with the outside world. Development under the program takes place in all of the above areas.

    “Childhood” – the program is divided into 4 main blocks, each of which is a central element in the construction of preschool education. There are sections “Knowledge”, “Healthy lifestyle”, “Creation”, “Humanity”.

    “Development” is a special program of pre-school education, which is based on the principle of gradual complication of educational, educational and educational tasks. The program provides a systematic, consistent approach to preschool education and child development.

    “Krokha” is a comprehensive program designed specifically for children under 3 years old. It takes into account the specifics of early age and ensures maximum efficiency in solving educational problems in children of this age category. Includes several blocks – “We are waiting for you, baby!”, “I myself”, “Gulenka”, “How I will grow and develop.”

    Partial basic programs of preschool education

    “Spider line”, “Young ecologist”, “Nature is our home” – these programs were developed for the purpose of environmental education of preschoolers. Accordingly, they instill in children love and respect for nature and the world around us, form an ecological consciousness, which is very important for preschool children.

    Nature and Artist, Semitsvetik, Integration, Umka-TRIZ, Kid, Harmony, Musical Masterpieces, Design and Manual Labor – all these programs of preschool education have one thing in common: they have a pronounced focus on the creative development of the child and on the artistic and aesthetic perception of the world.

    “I, you, we”, “The development of children’s ideas about history and culture”, “I am a man”, “Heritage”, “Introducing children to the origins of Russian folk culture” – the listed main programs of preschool education have a focus socio-cultural nature. They are designed to stimulate the development of spirituality, morality, cultural awareness and important social skills. In addition, some programs have as the highest goal the education of patriotism as a valuable characteristic of the individual.

    “Sparkle”, “Play for your health”, “Start”, “Hello!”, “Health” – in these programs, the emphasis is on recovery, physical development of a preschooler and his physical activity. The priorities are to instill a love for sports, an active and healthy lifestyle.

    There are even more specialized core preschool programs. For example, program “Fundamentals of Safety” involves preparing preschoolers for possible situations of danger, natural disasters and emergencies. “Preschooler and Economics” – a program designed for economic education and the formation of initial financial and economic ideas.

    Some of the main programs of preschool education have absorbed certain achievements in pedagogy and psychology.

    For example, TRIZ program is based on the postulates of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving developed by GT Altshuller in 1945. It is an original approach to the development of imagination, fantasy, creativity and ingenuity.

    The Maria Montessori Pedagogy Program has an original position regarding the upbringing, education and education of the child, based on a solid scientific and philosophical foundation. In addition, this program involves a deviation from some generally accepted pedagogical standards, for example, the rejection of the usual class-lesson system.

    The author is a teacher-psychologist Anna Makarova.

    This is a version of the “Development” program, adapted for preschool educational institutions in accordance with the Federal State Educational Standard.

    The main attention of the authors of the program is transferred from the content of training to its means. Content is knowledge, specific skills and abilities acquired by children in various types of activities or in free activities (ideas about natural phenomena, about people’s life in society, about mathematical relations: counting skills, coherent speech, etc. ). But for the development of abilities, it is not so much the knowledge and skills themselves (whatever they are) that are important, but how they are presented to children , and, respectively, are mastered by the children of .

    The actions that the child performs in the course of learning perform a dual function: on the one hand, they ensure the assimilation of the contents offered in the training, which is especially important for children of older preschool ages in connection with preparing them for school, and on the other hand, and this is the main thing – develop general abilities.

    The task facing the authors of the program was to create specially educational situations at each age and use the situations of the natural life of children that develop their general abilities to the maximum extent.

    Goals and objectives of the Development program

    The target of the program is

    • development of general abilities of preschoolers: mental, communicative,
    • regulatory in the process of specific preschool activities, their communication with adults and other children, cognitive research activities and other forms of activity that provide positive socialization, motivation of children, contribute to the formation of a general culture of the individual, their positive socialization in society;
    • protection and strengthening of the physical and mental health of children, including – protection and strengthening of the physical and mental health of children, including their emotional well-being, ensuring equal opportunities for the full development of each child during preschool childhood, regardless of place of residence, gender, nation , language, social status,
    • ensuring the continuity of the goals, objectives and content of preschool general and primary general education.

    The goals of the program can be achieved as a result of solving tasks

    • on the creation of educational situations that contribute to the mastery of children with specific means and methods that underlie cognitive, communicative and regulatory abilities, in accordance with their age and individual characteristics,
    • organizations of a favorable developing subject-spatial environment,
    • providing psychological and pedagogical support for teachers in order to master the methods of positive communication with children, the methods and techniques of developmental education, the methodology for the development of cognitive, communicative and regulatory abilities of preschoolers,
    • providing psychological and pedagogical support for the family and increasing the competence of parents (legal representatives) in matters of development and education, protection and promotion of children’s health, positive socialization;

    Thus, the program is aimed at developing the general abilities of preschoolers: mental, communicative, regulatory in the process of specific preschool activities, in the process of their communication with adults and other children in all educational areas.

    At the same time, full-fledged mental development is impossible without ensuring the life itself, the child’s health, general physical development, depending on the characteristics of culture, the specific conditions of the child’s life. To ensure the life and development of the child in preschool childhood, a preschool institution takes on some of these tasks.

    The program involves educational work with normally developing children. At the same time, the principles of educational work, which consist in creating conditions for the development of the general abilities of preschoolers, can also be applied in work with children with special needs. However, the methodological support of such work, according to the authors of the program, should be focused on the developmental features of such children and can only be created by specialists – defectologists. There are no such specialists in the team of authors of the “Development” program. In addition, the variety of features of the mental development of children, which differs from the norm, does not allow doing this in one, unified way (for example, for children with mental retardation, autism, hearing or vision impairments, speech therapy problems, etc. ).
