Nvidia Salary Negotiation Advice Based on Dozens of Negotiations

The pandemic fueled demand for many of Nvidia’s chips and that combined with global supply chain issues has led to a chip shortage, which has greatly benefited the company. Nvidia’s stock price has nearly doubled since pre-COVID lows, and it is now one of the largest companies in the world. Nvidia used to pay below-market rates for engineering but has increased offers in recent years in a bid to compete for top talent. It has a good culture, reasonable work-life balance, and many engineers we’ve helped report back that they enjoy working at Nvidia.

The purpose of this article is to provide you with a good foundation for your upcoming Nvidia negotiation. If your case is unique or you want 1:1 help to get the highest compensation possible, sign up for a call with our negotiation team.

Nvidia

Offer Compensation Components

Before you begin negotiating with Nvidia, it’s important to have a complete understanding of the compensation components on offer. The following monetary components will be included in a typical job offer for a tech role at Nvidia (e.g. DV Engineer):

  • Base Salary
  • Signing Bonus
  • Equity (also known as Restricted Stock Units – RSUs)
  • Performance Bonus
  • Stock Refreshers

This is an example Compiler Engineer offer at Nvidia.

Base Salary $230,000 $230,000 $230,000 $230,000
Signing Bonus $45,000
Nvidia RSUs $90,000 $90,000 $90,000 $90,000
Performance Bonus N/A N/A N/A N/A
Stock Refreshers Not specified Not specified Not specified Not specified
Total Compensation $365,000 $320,000 $320,000 $320,000

Nvidia Base Salary

Nvidia pays one of the highest starting base salaries in the industry. For equivalent levels (e.g. IC5/L5), they pay slightly more than Google and Facebook. For example, an E5 software engineering position at Facebook has a top of band salary of $214k, but we have seen the base salary go north of $250k at Nvidia for a similar level (IC5).

However, it’s worth noting that this is in part due to a lack of performance bonuses. At many tier 1 companies, you would have a 15% target bonus which makes these offers essentially equal.

Nvidia has a wider base salary range than most FAANG companies. Even though base salary is one of the most difficult components to negotiate, Nvidia has increased base salary substantially on many offers we’ve helped negotiate.

Nvidia Equity – Restricted Stock Units (RSUs)

RSUs at Nvidia have a four-year vesting schedule with a one-year cliff: 25% vests at the end of the first year (cliff), then 6.25% every 3 months for years 2, 3, and 4. If you are awarded $400,000 in RSUs, you will receive the following:

  • Year 1: 25% ($100K)
  • Year 2: 25% ($100K)
  • Year 3: 25% ($100K)
  • Year 4: 25% ($100K)

RSUs are frequently referred to as NSUs (Nvidia Stock Unit) by Nvidia recruiters. Despite the difference in nomenclature, it is the same as any other RSUs. Vesting dates are at consistent intervals throughout the year. Vesting takes place on the third Wednesday of March, June, and September, as well as the second Wednesday of December. Below is an excerpt from an Nvidia offer letter:

“We will recommend to the NVIDIA Board of Directors that you be granted NVIDIA Restricted Stock Unit (NSUs) at a target value of USD <redacted>. The number of NSUs granted will be determined by dividing this target value by the average closing price of NVIDIA’s common stock for the 30 calendar days ending on the last day of the calendar month prior to the date of grant of your NSUs, rounded down to the nearest whole share. The NSUs shall be subject to the terms of NVIDIA’s Equity Incentive Plan. NSUs are generally granted on the sixth (6th) business day of the calendar month following your start date. If granted, the units will vest and be issued approximately over a four (4) year period, with 25% of the shares subject to the NSU being issued on the first vesting date, and 6. 25% of the shares subject to the NSU being issued every three months thereafter, on the third Wednesdays in March, June and September, and on the second Wednesday in December, provided in each case you remain employed with NVIDIA on each vesting/issuance date.”

As outlined above, the actual number of RSUs granted is calculated by dividing the grant total by the average closing price over the past 30 days prior to the grant. To get an approximation, you can take the average stock price over the past 30 days.

The most negotiable aspect of Nvidia’s compensation package is equity, and equity has a wider band vs. other components such as base and signing bonus. Unfortunately, recruiters try to heavily sell the fact that there is potential upside in Nvidia stock and often offer initial equity grants that are considerably lower than its FAANG counterparts. It is possible to get a competitive equity package, but you must be aware of the typical pressure points you will encounter while dealing with recruiters and what types of leverage they respond best to.

Nvidia Signing Bonus

Many Nvidia offers include a small signing bonus as part of the initial offer. These can be tricky to negotiate higher. Nvidia’s signing bonus bands aren’t as broad as other companies. The top of the band signing bonus for an IC5 Software Engineer is ~$50,000, whereas the signing bonus for an E5 Facebook Software Engineer can reach $100,000 with the right leverage.

The good news is that in some scenarios you can get Nvidia to add a second-year sign-on bonus, which is referred to as an ‘Anniversary Bonus.’ The cash amount of the anniversary bonus is typically lower than the first-year sign-on bonus.

If you leave or are fired before the one-year mark, you must repay the signing bonus in full within 30 days of your final day of employment. This is harsher than most companies, which only require you to repay a prorated amount if you voluntarily leave. The following is a quote from an Nvidia offer letter:

“You will receive a sign-on bonus in the gross pre-tax amount of <redacted>, less payroll deductions and all required withholdings. By signing below, you acknowledge and agree that if you resign or are terminated for any reason (except for a termination that NVIDIA classifies as a reduction in force or position elimination) prior to your first anniversary of employment, this bonus shall be paid back to NVIDIA in full no later than thirty (30) days following the last day of your employment with NVIDIA.”

Nvidia Performance Bonus

Nvidia does not offer a cash performance bonus. This should be taken into account when comparing the base salary with other companies that have very predictable cash bonuses (e.g. Google, Snowflake). The impact becomes larger at more senior levels.

Nvidia Stock Refreshers

Nvidia gives out stock refreshers every year that vest over four years with no cliff and stack on top of your initial equity grant. The offer letter, however, makes no mention of refreshers targets or when they will be distributed. Most companies don’t explicitly list stock refreshers in the offer letter and instead you need to ask your recruiter or hiring manager very specific questions to understand 1) the target % of RSUs for your level 2) what % of engineers get that target.

Recruiters generally state that employees receive 20% or more of their original grant as refreshers. The refresher value can be considerably greater depending on performance reviews which happen every 6 months. The full-year review is the primary input for the refresher calculation.

Industry Compensation Data

Rora has helped negotiate a wide range of offers at Nvidia. Candidates of course need to know the latest role-specific salary information like the Nvidia data scientist salary or the Nvidia software engineer salary. However, it can also be useful to understand these salary trends at the industry level. Hence, we have complied our data for different roles setting the senior (L5) level as the benchmark.

Software Engineer Salary $425K + $100K signing bonus
Product Manager Salary $370k + $75k signing bonus
Data Scientist Salary $325k + $50k signing bonus
Technical Program Manager Salary $325k + $50k signing bonus
Product Designer Salary $315k + $40k signing bonus
Marketing Salary $260k + $40k signing bonus
User Experience Researcher Salary $255k + $40k signing bonus

Remember, the data points above are industry wide, not specific to Nvidia. There are many company specifics at play here. For example, a Nvidia hardware engineer salary is often above industry average. Also, a Nvidia technical program manager salary is typically higher on a comparative basis.

Nvidia

Negotiation Process

Before diving into the negotiation process, we should cover levelling at Nvidia, as it doesn’t exactly map 1:1 with industry standards. The main difference is that Nvidia has more segmented junior levels.

Nvidia Levels

  • Nvidia IC1 = Google L3
  • Nvidia IC2 = Google L3
  • Nvidia IC3 = Google L4
  • Nvidia IC4 = Google L4
  • Nvidia IC5 = Google L5
  • Nvidia IC6  = Google L6
  • Nvidia IC7 = Split between Google L6 and L7
  • Nvidia IC8 = Split between Google L7 and L8
If you’re still waiting to receive a Nvidia offer, there are a few common mistakes to avoid:
  1. Don’t reveal your current compensation. There are a few instances where it is useful, but only after you have received the initial offer. It is illegal for companies to ask for this in several states (for example, California). If pressed, simply say, “I’m sorry, but I’m not comfortable sharing that information”.
  2. Keep your compensation expectations to yourself. Now that recruiters are unable to ask about your current salary, they often resort to asking about your compensation expectations. Revealing a low figure is obviously damaging but sharing a very high number can also be a negative start to the negotiation since it increases the chances you are asked for confirmation of a competing offer. Instead, say something like, “Right now, I’m focused on the interview process and don’t have a figure in mind, but I’m certain we’ll be able to find a number that works for both of us“.
Once you learn that Nvidia will be extending you an offer, it’s time to start preparing for the negotiation process. The procedure we generally see at Nvidia is outlined below, but it varies slightly from recruiter to recruiter.

  1. A few days after the onsite interview, the recruiter will send you an email requesting a call.
  2. The recruiter will notify you on the first call that you passed the interviews and that you have been offered a position at Nvidia. They may disclose the first offer in some cases, but it’s more common for the recruiter to inquire about your salary expectations. We recommend pushing back with something along the lines of “I’m still figuring out my market value, but given how well the interviews went, I’d love it if you could go back to the team and see what is the most competitive offer you can put together”.
  3. Because Nvidia recruiters usually need to go back to the compensation team for approval on a new offer, you may need to schedule a follow-up conversation to hear the initial offer. If you have not been matched to a specific team, the recruiter will contact you during this period to set up calls with possible hiring managers. You don’t have to match with a specific team before negotiating but having a hiring manager on your side will help.
  4. The Nvidia compensation team works fairly quickly, and the recruiter will most likely contact you within a day or two to discuss the initial offer. During that conversation, the recruiter will typically ask you to get back to them within a few days with your thoughts on the offer, although this is rarely a firm deadline.
  5. Now that you’ve received the offer, it’s time to plan your counter-offer strategy. Depending on your situation, there is a wide range of possible strategies and leverage points. Nvidia recruiters, on the whole, are open to discussion and don’t press for written offers. However, they don’t like going back and forth with the compensation team. Recruiters are rarely willing to go back more than 2 times, so it’s important to have the right strategy set at the beginning.
  6. When you setup the counter offer call, the recruiter will ask questions about your leverage in order to pass it along to the compensation team for approval. This isn’t a problem if you come prepared with the appropriate responses. At Rora, we create a tree diagram specific to your scenario with the most likely objections and the optimal responses. The aim is to convince the recruiter to submit your counter offer to the compensation committee.
  7. You should receive an update within 1-2 days, at which point you must decide whether to push back a final time or accept the revised offer. Nvidia is sometimes willing to continue the negotiations, but it depends on the recruiter and what new facts you can bring to the table.

Note: one of the primary differences for senior candidates is that they are usually under more pressure to provide initial compensation expectations. However, we don’t recommend changing your approach. It’s still possible to push for a first offer, and in these cases, we’ve seen Nvidia make competitive initial offers that led to excellent negotiation outcomes.

Nvidia-Specific Negotiation Advice

Very rarely go above band

Even if you have considerable leverage in the form of a competing offer or a promotion at your current job, Nvidia is almost never willing to go above band. If your request for above-band numbers is refused, you still have options (e.g., contacting the hiring manager, pressing for an uplevel, etc.).

Don’t ask for offers in writing

Nvidia, unlike Google, does not often require you to submit cross offers in writing. This is very helpful because many companies refuse to put their offers in writing, which makes it harder to use them as leverage in other negotiations. That said, outlandish claims will guarantee that your recruiter does ask for numbers in writing.

Recruiters don’t like going back and forth

Recruiters at Nvidia don’t like doing multiple rounds of negotiation (although this is recruiter dependent to a degree). They will often only return to the compensation team a few times before presenting their “final” offer. In later rounds, recruiters tend to only go back to the compensation team to try to increase your current offer if you have new information to share (a higher competing offer, promotion at current employment, etc. ).

Willing to match

Nvidia will often match the highest competing offer you share with them, assuming it’s in band. An ideal negotiation is when you can get Nvidia to beat the competing offers you present them with, which requires the use of specific negotiation techniques that vary depending on your leverage and situation.

Unrealistic recruiter claims

Many recruiters we have negotiated with have tried various “sell” tactics. For example, they will share stories about huge stock upside (true historically, but not necessarily in the future) as a reason why you should join at a lower initial offer. Additionally, they will discount the performance bonus from competing offers (e.g. 15% at Google L5) because it isn’t guaranteed. In reality, that bonus is ~90% guaranteed and they are only doing this because they don’t offer a performance bonus. Don’t fall for tricks like these.

How Much Will It Cost?

One of the biggest considerations in picking a medical plan is cost. We provide top-notch healthcare at affordable prices for you. There are two costs you need to think about:

  1. What you pay out of your paycheck for medical, dental, and vision coverage. See this PDF.
  2. What you pay during the course of the year to meet your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. Compare your options [PDF] carefully so you know what you’ll pay. Make sure those numbers fit your household budget and personal savings so you’re prepared if you need to pay a large bill.

How Do I Sign Up For Benefits?

Visit the U.S. Benefits Enrollment Site and log in to enroll in optional benefits—including medical, dental, and vision coverage, and Flexible Spending Accounts. You have 31 days from your date of hire or a qualified status change (like a marriage, birth, or divorce) to update your benefits. If you don’t enroll in optional benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled in the NVIDIA HSA medical plan, which might not be right for you. But you won’t have dental or vision coverage, and you won’t be able to participate in the Flexible Spending Accounts.

Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in core benefits, including employee life, accident, and disability insurance.

China is preparing an ultra-modern “killer” video cards Nvidia and AMD. Not long to wait

China is developing a gaming GPU without foreign technology. MetaX Tech is behind it, and it’s customizing it to 7nm standards. In comparison, the chips for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3000 series cards are 8nm. Serial production of new MetaX Tech is scheduled for 2025.

China is catching up with the US

The Chinese company MetaX Tech, a manufacturer of graphics processors for the domestic market of China, is working at a high pace on a new modern GPU for gaming. According to Tom’s Hardware, it will be produced using 7-nanometer technology.

The veil of secrecy over the upcoming graphics chip was lifted by the co-founder, technical director and chief software architect of the company Yang Jian (Yang Jian). According to him, the mass production of GPUs and video cards based on it will begin in 2025.

Apparently, MetaX Tech really has every chance to achieve its goals. According to Tom’s Hardware, the company has made significant progress in this direction, and also received funding necessary for its further development, the source of which was not disclosed.

China is very determined. Western sanctions only give him strength

MetaX Tech is now ready to produce its first non-video game oriented 7nm heterogeneous GPU. In addition, she is working on another GPU, also 7 nm, which will be used in scientific computing, data centers and in the field of artificial intelligence. As of September 2022, the project was at the final stage of development. Serial production of this GPU is scheduled for 2024.

Nvidia and AMD should not relax

MetaX Tech has no plans to release gaming graphics cards on the international market yet. She intends to sell them exclusively in China, although by the time of release she may abandon these territorial restrictions.

But even if they remain in place, MetaX Tech’s entry into the gaming graphics card market could be a very serious blow to the stability of the business of American companies AMD and Nvidia, two of the largest players in the global discrete gaming graphics card market. Intel is currently trying to break into this segment, but so far all its attempts have ended in failure.

According to MetaX Tech, China accounts for 40% of global demand for discrete video accelerators. And gamers are hardly “guilty” of this – game video cards are also bought up by miners who use them to mine cryptocurrency.

At present, operations with virtual money, including mining, are limited to the maximum in China. This may reduce the demand for discrete GPUs, but video games are not banned in this country yet.

However, even if we don’t take into account the market component, MetaX Tech’s transition to the release of exactly 7nm gaming solutions is also an alarming bell for AMD and Nvidia. For example, AMD’s current flagship 6000 series cards come with 7nm and 6nm GPUs, while the GPUs for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3000 series are manufactured at 8nm standards.

    How Americans Help China

All MetaX Tech chips are developed from scratch, without the use of technologies from other companies, especially American ones. This applies, among other things, to the architecture and instruction set. Due to this, they are protected from sanctions by the US authorities.

Ascon switched from Cisco Webex to domestic meeting service

    Import substitution VKS

Meanwhile, American corporations, unwittingly, nevertheless take an indirect part in the creation of the future gaming GPU MetaX Tech. AMD excels especially in this regard.

According to Tom’s Hardware, MetaX Tech employs quite a few engineers who have worked for AMD in the recent past. And if MetaX Tech cannot (and probably does not want to) use the technologies of its Western competitor, then it certainly exploits the experience gained by its engineers during their work in this company to the maximum.

This, by the way, is not the first such case. In March 2022, CNews wrote about the Chinese company Moore Threads, which also develops video cards based on its own GPUs. It employs several former Nvidia engineers. But, unlike MetaX Tech, Moore Threads is developing GPUs with a 12nm topology.

There will be no problems with production

It is very likely that the US authorities will try to prevent MetaX Tech from setting up mass production so that it does not prevent Nvidia and AMD from ruling the Chinese gaming graphics market. But in this case, the PRC has a very significant trump card in store.

    IT industry support

In mid-September 2022, SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co.) announced the development of its own 14-nanometer production, independent of foreign technologies and hardware. SMIC is China’s largest contract semiconductor manufacturer.

14 nm manufacturing process is not enough for the upcoming MetaX Tech GPUs. However, they are still about three years away from production, so there is still time for SMIC to master 7nm. The company is already working in this direction, simultaneously studying the features of production with a 5 nm topology.

NVIDIA calls to forget about falling prices for video cards

The development of video cards has risen in price. NVIDIA manager explains that the idea of cheaper GPUs is a thing of the past

After the situation on the cryptocurrency market changed, used video cards began to appear on sale. Now, not everyone is in a hurry to buy a video card at a price higher than the recommended (or even recommended), since there is a secondary market.

However, NVIDIA’s manager urges not to think that such a story with a drop in the cost of video cards will continue in the future.

Jensen Huang stated: “Moore’s Law is dead … a 12-inch plate is much more expensive today. The idea that the price of a chip [used in the production of a video card] will go down is a story from ‘s past.”

Huang explained that the driving force behind the rise in graphics card prices is the rising cost of components as well as the slowdown in performance growth. He also noted that 3080 “to continue to live”, i.e. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series will not disappear from the market yet.

VDI Virtual Desktops – GPU Virtualization, Benefits of vdi

This article is a continuation of the main article on Workstation Virtualization (VDI) and aims to explore and demonstrate how convenient and practical it is to work with graphics-intensive applications in a VDI virtual environment and what technologies and tools are required for this.

    Why VDI?

    • IT ownership costs are reduced by up to 30%
    • The security of corporate data is multiplied
    • More than 50% more stable and reliable infrastructure
    • More than 35% of large and medium-sized organizations in the world use VDI virtualization
    • In 2015, the use of VDI technologies grew by 8-11%
    • Over 35% of IT professionals see VDI as the most promising technology

What is required to organize an office IT structure based on virtual desktops, in particular for a comfortable user experience?

    • Ensure stable operation with office suite, document printing services
    • Provide the ability to comfortably work with web content – surfing, online video, graphically loaded web resources
    • Provide quick viewing of graphic documents, pictures and scanned copies in jpg, PDF formats.
    • Make it easy to use interactive communications software – Skype, video chats and multiparty video conferencing

To accomplish the above tasks, it is necessary to use graphics card virtualization and provide it to virtual desktops. To use this functionality, the VDI server requires at least one graphics processing unit (GPU), whose driver must support DirectX 9.0 and DirectX 10.0, with sufficient video memory separated from system memory. It is also necessary to use special software that allows you to use the hardware capabilities of graphics adapters in a virtual work environment.

    Benefits of VDI virtual desktops

    • Unified workspace with user-friendly interface
    • Comfortable work with graphics and sound in a virtual workspace
    • Centralized integrated management of dozens of jobs
    • Personal workspace, accessible from anywhere in the world and from any device
    • Hardware accelerated video and 3D graphics support
    • Savings in the use and distribution of technical resources

Each VDI virtual desktop platform (HyperV, VMWare, Citrix) has its own graphics card virtualization technology to provide high-quality graphics rendering in a virtual work environment, we suggest considering each separately: The technology is a new, enhanced set of Windows Server Remote Virtual Desktop capabilities that allows you to virtualize your server video adapter, making it available to virtual desktops. Technology features include full video support with 100% coverage of all formats and a high degree of audio synchronization, rich multimedia support including Silverlight and 3D graphics.

RemoteFX “second generation” in new editions of MS Server 2012.

The graphical implementation of the basic RemoteFX protocol is built as follows – the remote access server itself draws the necessary graphical details, forms a single frame buffer and sends it entirely to the “thin client”.
Interesting changes have taken place in the MS Srerver 2012 edition, especially with the release of the new RDP software client version 8, which includes RemoteFX, so to speak, the second generation. Now the frame buffer is analyzed, different codecs are selected for different sections of the screen (graphics, static images, animation and video), sections are encoded and separately given to the “thin client”. For images, progressive rendering is used, that is, the client will “see” the image in low resolution instantly, and the details will be loaded as quickly as the bandwidth of the channel allows. In fact, the “second generation” RemoteFX has learned to adapt to the characteristics of the communication channel using adaptive codecs.

vSGA and vDGA in VMware HorizonTM VDI

3D graphics acceleration features in VMware View desktop virtualization solution are supported by vSGA and vDGA technologies, which were introduced in VMware View 5.2 but were not fully added until version of VMware View 5.3. vSGA mode is the easiest and most efficient way to use hardware acceleration for 3D graphics in virtual machines. It limits the system administrator only to the amount of video memory, which, however, the adapter also has a limited amount. The vDGA mode is intended for the case when a separate GPU needs to be completely given to the virtual machine. This mode is based on VMware vSphere DirectPath I/O technology (that is, direct device forwarding). Accordingly, the number of GPUs on the VMware ESXi host is important here, which determines the maximum number of running virtual machines with vDGA support.

Below is a picture that shows the options for using graphics modes for various types of tasks that are expected for workers using virtual PCs:

HDX 3D is a technology that optimizes the performance of 2D and 3D graphics rich applications. HDX 3D takes advantage of modern server-side GPU rendering to enable information workers, power users and designers to get the most out of their work without delay from anywhere. With Citrix HDX technology, users get the same level of experience they get from a local PC, even when using media, real-time collaboration, USB peripherals, and 3D graphics. Webcam and VoIP support, enhanced audio codecs, and WAN optimization for branch offices ensure a high-quality user experience, no matter where they are.

    New technology from NVidia

NVIDIA GRID™ vGPU™ unlocks the full potential of NVIDIA software and hardware graphics acceleration for virtualized solutions. The NVIDIA GRID vGPU delivers exceptionally high graphics performance in virtual desktops, similar to PC performance when multiple users share the GPU. GRID vGPU is the industry’s most advanced technology for sharing GPU hardware acceleration across multiple virtual machines without compromising graphics quality. Application features and compatibility remain the same as on a desktop computer. With GRID vGPU technology, the graphics commands of each virtual machine are sent directly to the graphics CPU without translation by the hypervisor. The GPU uses timing to deliver unrivaled performance when sharing virtualized graphics.

    Summary and Recommendations

The use of graphics technologies in a VDI environment provides progressive benefits over conventional remote desktop or standard virtual machines. These technologies work both at the level of the guest operating system and at the hardware level of the media, allowing you to “bring” the physical video card to the virtual environment as close as possible.

Thanks to the use of graphics acceleration modes in VDI platforms, standard user applications work almost the same as on classic personal computers. Videos confirm that the operation of graphics software (PowerPoint, Visio), web surfing on sites loaded with graphics, opening PDF scan copies and even watching videos are convenient, work without delays and braking.

As practical tests have shown, an important advantage is the feature of graphics acceleration technologies to “forward” the video adapter directly to the virtual machine. This feature has a positive effect both on the quality and speed of working with graphics, and on the interaction of a graphics adapter with a virtual machine – many graphics software simply refuses to function correctly if a full-fledged graphics adapter is not declared in the system.

Future teacher training, school experiments and teacher salaries

Is it possible to prepare a teacher in 4 years? Why is special attention paid to classroom management today? Do teachers need a single “rate”? Igor Remorenko, Rector of the Moscow City Pedagogical University, answers questions from Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Igor Mikhailovich, state-funded places in the direction of “Education and Pedagogical Sciences” are growing – this year alone there are about 75 thousand of them. And a few years ago, teachers beat oil workers in terms of the quality of admission to universities. Is the level of applicants still high?

Igor Remorenko: An important indicator is the average USE score for the budget. According to it, we must stay at the level of the previous year — it was the highest average USE score in the country among pedagogical universities — 87.2. Now it is already known how many winners of Olympiads for schoolchildren have been enrolled. Their number is also growing every year: this year we will have 95 such freshmen, last year – 80. This is also an indicator of the growth in the quality of admission.

A concept for the development of teacher education until 2030 was adopted. It says that in the curricula for future teachers, the “Russian language”, “culture of speech”, “class leadership” should become mandatory elements. As it will be?

Igor Remorenko: The concept as a whole is about what needs to be done in conditions of increased attention to a single educational space. Previously, this meant mainly that no social or national group can be disadvantaged in receiving an education. Now everything is much broader: common approaches to education, a single theoretical base, a single set of basic courses. Here is the Russian language, and class management, and inclusive methods. I would also add information literacy, digital competencies.

But it seems to me that some academic autonomy is still needed, depending on, say, the region. For example, there are no single recipes for the same inclusion (teaching children with disabilities). There are different solutions and different schools of thought.

Why is the class manual marked with a special line?

Igor Remorenko: The fact is that all students of pedagogical universities traditionally study general and developmental psychology – something on which, in fact, class management should be built. But not on my own pedagogical experience, without the teacher’s, so to speak, reflection. Students have nothing to analyze yet, unlike those teachers who have already messed with children, held more than one event with the class, had a lot of conversations with parents, faced bullying and other various difficult situations.

By the way, a few years ago, the idea arose in the Moscow education system that all class teachers should have qualifications at the level of a psychologist of a children’s team. But, in fact, every young teacher in the first months at school undergoes a certain “tuning”, attunement to the class. And here everything is very individual. Everyone adjusts himself to different situations and different children. It seems to me that the formation of a class teacher is provided not so much by some kind of coherent fundamental university course as by the competent support of the teacher in the first years of work.

According to the latest data, there are not enough teachers of mathematics and physics in schools today. Do you feel it?

Igor Remorenko: Many teachers from different regions come to work in Moscow. There is a competitive labor market here: wages are quite high. Therefore, there is no particular shortage in the capital. If we talk about the country as a whole, then yes, everything related to the natural sciences, not only physics, is in great deficit.

    Why?

Igor Remorenko: The whole practice of teaching natural sciences has been intensively rebuilt in recent years, and all over the world. School knowledge began to turn from mastering fixed dogmas and laws of nature into a kind of experimental work, where different sciences are intertwined with each other. You have probably heard about the STEAM direction – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The idea is that everything is connected. And our schoolchildren often know that the structure of DNA is in the form of a spiral, but they don’t understand at all how the discovery of Watson and Crick can be connected with Mendel’s first experiments on the signs of heredity transmission. What does Mendel’s experiments with peas have to do with the ingenious structure of DNA? What chain of discoveries stretches from the beginning of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th? Why does all this have to do with heredity?

What we need today is not encyclopedic learning aimed at memorizing information, but deep learning — through mastering the meanings, through understanding the essence of things. In addition, now the teacher has computer modeling at hand, the ability to demonstrate complex scientific experiments using remote access, big data. Real experiments at school became possible.

Therefore, science education strives hard to be understandable, to demonstrate the origin of scientific knowledge, to show various engineering applications. Teachers are aware of this, but for the most part they are ready only for the transfer of information, in exams they check mainly what they have learned, and not what is meaningful. Hence the inner dissatisfaction, the unwillingness to do something outdated and out of date. And to cope with new challenges, to rebuild training programs, there is not enough courage, time, skills. And as a result, unwillingness to teach. This can also be dealt with, but it takes time: we need support for innovation, new teacher training courses, updating educational programs.

In pedagogical universities, according to the Russian Academy of Education, only 9 percent of the programs are defectological. Those who choose them are also few. Why?

Igor Remorenko: Working with children who have health problems is very difficult. As a rule, those guys come here who in their personal lives have already encountered similar features in their family or among friends.

The policy of inclusion, the integration of people with disabilities in education began not so long ago. Of course, there is a demand for such specialists. And we have scientific schools that work in this direction. The problem is that different universities do this in very different ways. While it is difficult to find reliable, consensus scientific approaches. But where a scientific school gains authority, students go there, seeing an opportunity for their productive work.

Teachers often write about the difference in salaries by region. Need a flat rate?

Igor Remorenko: Suppose such a single rate has been introduced throughout the country. Then it will be necessary to revise the rule on correlating teachers’ salaries with the average salary in the region’s economy. And I remember how difficult this norm of the law was born, how many disputes and discussions there were. The fact is that for countries with a federal structure, this is a typical model. The salary of a teacher in one region differs markedly from another, depending on the standard of living and average salaries in the economy. This is not the case in small states. There is quite possible a single rate for all schools in the country. But for large countries, where there are many different regions with different lifestyles, it is difficult to come up with a “single window”.

Nazim Mustafin, one of the winners of the International Olympiad in Biology, frankly stated at a meeting with the Minister of Education: there is little practice at school, teachers tell children about experiments in words. Is it so?

Igor Remorenko: Practice today is becoming almost the main way for schoolchildren and students to understand the world. The Moscow State Pedagogical University has a whole building where future teachers conduct experiments with children, discuss various phenomena and developments. This helps future teachers build some of their lessons in the form of a scientific experiment.

After all, what is laboratory work in the classical school sense? Execution of a certain algorithm, confirmation of this or that phenomenon, already known in advance. We merge two transparent liquids – it should turn out green. Hooray, it worked. No experimental search. And this, of course, is a big minus.

The adopted concept of teacher education focuses on target audience. We are used to the fact that the target set is, as a rule, the defense industry, industry, and medicine. And in pedagogy?

Igor Remorenko: In Moscow City, up to ten percent of the target enrollment for various programs. But in the last few years, we have left such places only for the magistracy. I’ll explain why. As a rule, applicants with lower scores than in the main set are admitted to the target admission to the bachelor’s degree. But we believe that it is better for undergraduate students not to lower the bar. Give everyone the opportunity to compete with their USE results honestly and openly. After all, then the future teachers will be those who have mastered the subject of teaching well.

And one more thing. Nevertheless, it is still difficult for bachelors – the guys who came right after school – to decide on their future work right at the “entrance”. You need to try different profiles – an elementary school teacher, a kindergarten teacher, a Russian language teacher . .. And by subscribing to the target “track”, they undertake to work for three years in a specific place in a specific position upon graduation. Therefore, our target students are masters. They already know exactly what they want and are ready, quite consciously, to take on obligations to work in a certain place.

    Key question

Is it possible to train a teacher in four years?

Igor Remorenko: The situation is more complicated. We have a four-year bachelor’s degree with a chosen profile. For example, the profile “teacher of mathematics” or “teacher of history”. Then, of course, the master’s program is for those who would like to correct the trajectory. For example, I became a head teacher and I need some knowledge in the field of management. Or a graduate of an engineering university or a classical university who realized that his calling was to teach children. Then he, after the subject bachelor’s degree, goes to the pedagogical master’s program.

But more importantly, helping the student choose a profile through trial and error. Therefore, we have transferred a significant part of the bachelor’s degree to the “two plus three” model.

This is, on the example of our Institute of Pedagogy and Educational Psychology, six profiles: elementary school, preschool education, foreign language, computer science, Russian language and a completely new profile – designing educational programs. The guys enter all six at once and during the first two years they try different combinations: elementary school plus preschool, design and foreign language, computer science and elementary school. And in these two years, an understanding comes of what you are really interested in. From the third year, the student must decide and choose two related profiles for which he will continue his studies.

It is a pity that such combinations are possible today only within the framework of one enlarged group of specialties “Education and Pedagogy”. You cannot combine, for example, history and teacher education, geography and teacher education. And that would be reasonable. I think this is the future. We will strive to train teachers who are keenly interested in their subject and consciously choose their place in the rich pedagogical reality, who are able to both teach and educate, and are ready to establish partnerships with other teachers.

2022 started off with some pretty bad news for users looking to upgrade their PCs. According to DigiTimes , the Big Three, which includes AMD , Intel and NVIDIA , plans to increase their product prices by up to 20% due to a number of external factors such as continued high supply and production costs.

Report says TSMC has already raised prices on existing 7nm and 5nm processes to be used in several next generation GPUs and CPUs such as AMD Ryzen 7000, AMD Ryzen 6000H/U, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 and Intel’s ARC Alchemist GPU. In the latter case, Intel is relying on the 6nm process technology, which is a continuation of the N7 process node, but the price increase will be similar.

AMD will increase the cost of all 7nm and 5nm chips manufactured by TSMC, as TSMC has increased its prices for old and modern technology nodes by 10-20% since this year.

Earlier this year, NVIDIA also reportedly paid TSMC advance payments for long-term orders for its 5nm RTX 40 series of GPUs and may pass on some of the increased manufacturing costs to customers.

The increase in prices for end users should compensate for the variables and external factors that have affected the existing chip manufacturing process. And while there is a chance that the availability of some products will improve by the end of this year, in the case of prices, there are no prerequisites for this, and this is what remains the main problem for many now.

AMD has already raised prices for Zen 3 processors based on TSMC’s 7nm process, but the Ryzen 7000, which uses TSMC’s 5nm process, may go up even more.

Intel’s ARC graphics and AMD’s new RDNA 2 graphics cards are the only GPUs currently known to use TSMC’s 6nm process node, so they may have a better supply situation, but pricing is a big question mark. Judging by retailer pricing for the Radeon RX 6500 XT, it appears that chip supply issues will also affect the 6nm process, despite AMD promising to improve supply and pricing for the upcoming card.

where to go? 3 options for exotic lovers

In the first article of this series, we began to cover such an extensive and always relevant topic for programmers from ex-USSR countries (and not only) as relocation abroad. In May, we analyzed in detail three relevant options for a world living in quarantine status and a coronavirus epidemic: Estonia, New Zealand and Finland. There are many more interesting countries in the pipeline. Since it’s summer now and I want to play a little foolish, today we will make a selection of three countries for relocation, which can be considered exotic in one way or another.
And because only more interesting. Indeed, why would a modern programmer, whose average age is constantly decreasing, and now, in Silicon Valley, for example, is 28 years old, look for a relocation to boring Europe or snowy Canada, if there are a number of much brighter options? We’ll talk about them today.

    Singapore

Singapore, we attributed to the “exotic” countries purely conditionally, given the location of this city-state – in the heart of Southeast Asia. Otherwise, Singapore is no longer exotic, but one of the world’s main business centers, which is famous for its openness to business, the highest standard of living and the almost complete absence of bureaucracy and corruption.
Today, 80 of the 100 largest technology companies in the world are already located in Singapore, including Microsoft, LinkedIn, Google, Huawei, Baidu, Tencent, Nvidia and others.
Not to mention the fact that the headquarters of most large regional IT companies are based in Singapore. And the size of the Southeast Asian digital market, according to e-Conomy SEA 2019from Google, Temasek and Bain & Company, should reach $300 billion by 2025, which exceeds the previous forecast made in 2016 by almost $100 billion.
Singapore is also home to a range of very promising tech startups as well as established unicorn companies (startups valued at $1 billion or more). The most famous Singaporean unicorns are Grab (the Asian equivalent of Uber), Sea Group (gaming, e-commerce and payments), and Lazada (the South Asian equivalent of Amazon). In addition, this city-state hosts such large and respected companies as Salesforce, Intuit, Adventus and others.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the IT sector in Singapore is actively hiring experienced foreign programmers and other high-level technical specialists.

    Relocation conditions (visas and documents)

Singapore is a city-country that, due to its size, is highly dependent on the influx of labor from abroad. Therefore, the state actively issues various types of work permits to foreigners.
The full list of permissions can be found here. We are only interested in three main categories for qualified professionals, which include programmers: EntrePass, Employment Pass (EP) and Personalized Employment Pass (PEP). The vast majority of programmers work in Singapore with the last two types of permits, which are distributed depending on the level of qualification and, accordingly, the level of salary.
In addition to the Employment Pass, another option to legally enter the country for a long time (enough to find a job there) is to study English at a language school – a course for several months will cost less than $ 3,000, and will allow you to slowly search in Singapore jobs and going to interviews.
But the most common way for our programmers to get to Singapore is an Employment Pass from a local company, which is issued for a period of 2 years. With an Employment Pass, it is enough for a newcomer to the country to visit the local Ministry of Manpower once to quickly settle all the formalities.
Even though the Employment Pass is employer-specific, if you wish, you can quit before the 2-year deadline and move to another company. In this case, the new employer will be able to transfer the corresponding Employment Pass to themselves.

    Salary and working conditions

Singapore consistently ranks in various tops of the world’s most expensive places to live, which means that the cost of living in this country is relatively high, as are the salaries of foreign specialists.
Thus, according to the authoritative portal PayScale, the average salary of a programmer in Singapore is about $38,000 per year. Indeed gives a slightly more optimistic figure: $3,975 per month. In general, these figures are confirmed by the real reviews of programmers who moved to Singapore, who note that an experienced programmer can earn up to $7,000 per month in the country.
In terms of spending, the biggest item of expenditure will be rent, which in Singapore is quite expensive and will cost an average of $1,000 to $2,000 per month.
Another important advantage of Singapore for foreign workers is the relatively low tax rates: there is a progressive tax scale, and income tax can range from 0 to 22%, depending on the total income level. For most programmers, this rate is between 5 and 7%.

    Personal experience

“Singapore is a very diverse country. As a rule, the staff of a medium-sized company will consist of representatives of 10-20 nationalities from all over the planet. A very rewarding experience. Basically, employers are, of course, all kinds of FinTech, represented by both established large banks, investment and insurance companies, and new startups, as well as medicine, transport and logistics, e-commerce. There are a lot of high-tech innovations, in particular, businesses are now trying to find the benefits from the use of AI and extracting information from large volumes of collected data. Banks understood the meaning of the phrase “people need banking, but don’t need banks”, and now many of them are actively changing to meet customer expectations and not lose the market,” an experienced Ukrainian programmer and software architect shares his experience of relocating to Singapore.
“In general, the impression is extremely positive. Of course, there are things that are clearly not enough – the company to drink beer, colleagues my age (all over 30) and my native language, but there are a number of advantages that make an extremely positive impression. According to the latest data, there are two hundred and twenty-five thousand millionaires in a city of three and a half million, in other words, about one in sixteen millionaires. That entails a high standard of living. Most apartments with pool and gym, good transport system, air conditioning and rain protection systems everywhere. The city is multinational – Indians, Chinese, Malays, Filipinos, Europeans, Australians. You can list the nations boiling in the local cauldron for a long time. Naturally, without tolerance and education it would not have been possible to achieve the unity of the nation. Everything around is imbued with the principle of tolerance and courtesy, you can safely go to the post office without fear of stumbling into a wall of rudeness and bureaucracy,” says a Russian IT specialist who moved to Singapore about his impression.

    United Arab Emirates

Another direction for relocation, which we, of course, only conditionally consider exotic – the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the most advanced state in its region and the place where offices and headquarters of many companies are based, including number of technological ones.
In recent years, the UAE has been very actively investing in various kinds of technological start-ups, and this is bearing fruit. Unicorn startups such as Souq.com (e-commerce platform), Careem (analogous to Uber) and Noon.com (e-commerce) are based in this country. The latter attracted $1 billion in investments in 2016.
And in general, although the UAE is not formally an offshore zone, the country provides companies with favorable taxation conditions, due to which many large technology companies choose this location for their offices, including Google, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, HP and many others.
Here are some of the largest companies that specialize in software development and are located in the UAE: IndiaNIC, Unified Infotech, Selleo, Iflexion, Cyber Infrastructure Inc, Open Geeks Lab, S-PRO.

    Relocation conditions (visas and documents)

One of the advantages of working in the UAE is the ease of obtaining a work permit and visa, along with the absence of unnecessary bureaucracy. Work visas are issued on the basis of work permits obtained by employing companies. Employees are only required to provide basic documents such as a passport, diploma and other educational certificates.
Work visas are electronic and sent by email. After arrival, in the case of a long-term stay in the country, the employee must apply for a resident status for himself, which takes about a month.

    Salary and working conditions

The salaries of programmers in the UAE are generally not amazing, but they are quite consistent with the level of other world economic centers. However, there is a nuance here: the majority of programmers working in the country are citizens of India and Pakistan who are willing to work for relatively little money. That is why, according to the PayScale resource, for example, the average salary of a programmer in the UAE is about $20,000 per year,
Judging by the information in real reviews of specialists employed in the country, highly qualified foreign programmers earn in the UAE, on average, about $4-5 thousand per month. There is no income tax for individuals in the country, and hence another undoubted plus of this region follows – when working in the UAE, you do not need to calculate the tax rate and compare wages before taxes and what remains “clean.”
Programmers working in the country also note that companies in the UAE, even if they are purely IT companies, are more characterized by formalities like a dress code. In addition, it is not customary to recycle in the Emirates: a standard working day starts around 8 am and ends at 4-5 pm.

    Personal experience

“This should appeal to those who like to be in a building and changing environment. There is almost no IT infrastructure in Dubai [review published in 2014], which may be why system architects are sorely needed here – everything is in the process of active construction here. I work for a company that creates large WiFi installations – hotels, malls, cottage villages. Continuing the previous point – if you want to do IT business, then most likely you will succeed here. And the money in b2b is just huge. Just think of what will be in demand here and what is not here (and there is almost nothing here),” a Russian-speaking system architect working in Dubai shares his impressions.
“The country’s technological market is rather small compared to the Ukrainian one, but it has huge potential. There are separate interesting technological locations. For example, Internet City, where Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Google offices are located, or another location – Dubai Design District. In the IT sphere of Dubai, the influence of big business and its culture is much more present than in Ukraine. Here, first of all, you need to be able to negotiate, defend, argue and sell your decisions. No one rides hoverboards with a glass of smoothie, smoking their vape, and does not arrive at the office by 12:00, if you know what I mean,” a UX designer from Ukraine talks about his experience of relocating to Dubai.

    South Africa

But South Africa, as a location for a programmer’s relocation, can rightly be called an exotic option: after all, this is Africa, the path and one of the most developed countries in this region.
Despite the fact that South Africa does not have an unequivocal reputation as a technological and business center, like Singapore and the UAE, it is still one of the main regional centers, hosting both large companies, mainly doing business in this region, and numerous start-ups .
Here is a small list of the most promising technology startups in South Africa that are quite actively hiring developers and other specialists: Bank Zero, RapidDeploy, Aerobotics, Pineapple, Droppa, Yoco, JUMO, SweepSouth and others.
Here are some of the companies in South Africa that specialize exclusively in software development: Alphonic Network Solutions Pvt. Ltd, MobiDev, Rushkar, Impulsum, Realm Digital, SovTech and others.

    Relocation conditions (visas and documents)

A few years ago, the South African government launched a new visa program for skilled workers, the Critical Skills Visa. These visas are issued to representatives of those professions in which there is the greatest shortage, and programmers naturally fall into this category. Accordingly, obtaining a visa will not be difficult if you have an offer from one of the local companies. As programmers living in South Africa note, the working conditions for this visa are very convenient, as it allows, among other things, to change employers painlessly. One of the most common difficulties in applying for this visa is the requirement for a diploma, as well as evidence of work experience in the profession, which should not be less than five years.

    Salary and working conditions

When it comes to salaries, South Africa is definitely not a country where a programmer can earn much higher than the world average. According to PayScale, the average annual salary of a programmer in the country is about $19,000. According to this resource, South African programmers earn an average of just over $2,000 per month, while experienced specialists can expect to earn up to $5-6,000 per month.
The country has a progressive tax rate, which for programmers usually reaches about 25-30%. Relatively low salaries are offset by relatively low housing and food prices. The main centers where most company offices in the country are located are the cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town.

    Personal experience

“There are a lot of startups here that really need developers. The problem is that the people who make these startups (often expats who come from other countries with money to implement their ideas) are trying to manage the developers. At the same time, they know practically nothing about processes, about the development cycle, about all these agile methodologies. In their understanding, everything should look like this: I came up with it, and you write to me. I was used to working according to completely different standards, so I changed jobs. For example, my first company tracked all the work in Excel, no one heard about Jira and Trello. The second company deployed directly to production from a personal CTO machine. And it was impossible to change something, it was perceived with hostility. This is not the case everywhere, you just never know where you will end up, given that there are no reviews anywhere on the Internet,” says a married couple of Ukrainian programmers working in South Africa.
“Some of our programmers moved to South Africa permanently – they have been living there for several years. The salary may be the same, but the climate is better there. I myself would not move to South Africa, because I would have to take a child under 18 everywhere: on dates, to cinemas, to school and back. People there without complexes, open and relaxed. The locals have a completely different attitude towards children. You go into a cafe with a child, the waiters will pick him up and go for a walk with him around the establishment. In the shopping center, children crawl on the floor. They definitely have more freedom,” shares her opinion a developer from Belarus, whose company works closely with clients from South Africa.
