How to make a fortune working in a hotel?

Where is the highest salary in the world for a hotel chef? In which region are receptionists paid the most? In which country are hotel managers paid the most money at the end of the month? Many hospitality workers are happy to move to another country or even another continent to find their ideal job. Indeed, working in a hotel is an attractive opportunity to travel and explore the world. Working as a waiter in a ski resort can give you a chance to spend the season in the French Alps, or as a lifeguard you can go to a Greek resort with seductive white sandy beaches and clear blue seas. But as much as local landscapes and sights can vary, so can wages differ in these places. And few of us will ignore the fact that some countries offer higher paying jobs than others.

Of course, the salary depends both on the type of work and on the location. Chefs will always be paid more than waiters, receptionists will generally be paid more than maids, managers will be paid more than supervisors, and private tennis coaches will always be paid the most. However, for most jobs, salary levels are still tied to location.

Many positions in the hotel pay the minimum wage that is possible in the given country. In Uganda, for example, doormen are paid as little as $4 a day, even at major chain hotels such as Protea and Sheraton. On the other side of the planet, in similar hotel chains in the US, doormen earn an average of $11.40 an hour, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Salaries do not always reflect the level of income of guests. Dubai, for example, lies somewhere in the middle of the range: waiters and waitresses earn around $250-$350 per month, and most employees come from India or Eastern Europe to work here.

Keep in mind, however, that in positions where you have to work with clients, the real income may be higher, since it all depends on the culture of tipping in a particular country. In the US, a 15% tip on an order for restaurant staff is almost mandatory; thus, in expensive restaurants, waiters can get their hands on four times their basic salary. Another secret source of income is the commission often paid to diving instructors for selling extra diving lessons, or to guides for organizing extra day trips. The level of average salary is more uniform from country to country for more qualified hotel employees. Although managers receive almost no tips or commission, they will be rewarded for having additional qualifications, skills and experience that benefit the company no matter where the hotel is located. The CEO of a hotel in Canada earns between $40,000 and $100,000, the same as a director of the same hotel in Asia.

When it comes to money, salary is not the only thing that matters. Tax rates and benefits, which may seem boring or irrelevant, can actually significantly affect the decision-making process about a job. Many more upscale hotels offer additional perks that are just as important as the basic salary. Salary plus benefits vary considerably from country to country. At Four Seasons in the US, employees automatically receive $401,000 in compensation, free dental care, and up to 78% coverage for health insurance premiums. In the UK, medical costs are far less significant, especially for younger employees, because the national health care system makes medical benefits less attractive than higher pension contributions or a few free nights at Four Seasons hotels around the world. Similarly, a hotel on a remote beach in Mozambique will likely try to lure workers in with free accommodation, while a London hotel will expect employees to travel from home to work.

So salaries vary from region to region, as do tax rates, benefits, living conditions and living expenses. And if you want to choose a job based on income level, all this should be taken into account. After all, if you’re delivering food on a Mozambique beach, while you won’t get a tip like in New York, the beer will probably be cheaper there.
