History
MUSE was co-founded by Susie Amis Cameron and her sister Rebecca Amis in 2006. [3] The motivation for opening a school is the founders and their children. [4] dissatisfaction with the quality of the education offered with a particular focus on the environment in the context of their children and a desire to raise children for whom environmental protection is a way of life. [3] The school was described as a “utopia” where children learn to respect nature and enjoy diversity. [5] The school has set its own grade level goals to meet California standards and has focused its educational philosophy on academic excellence, passion-based learning, sustainability, communication, and self-efficacy. Students and faculty work together to create a personalized curriculum based on student interests and passions. In September 2019205 students from kindergarten to grade 12 studied at the school. [6]
Seed to Table program and transition to an all plant based menu
The school has been described as the first vegan K-12 school out of town. [7] [8] The school grows fruit and vegetables for its vegan school lunches by students and staff, [9] through a program called From Seeds to Table. Students in each grade learn how to grow, harvest and cook fruits and vegetables. The program grows about 200 different plants, and since September 2013, the school has been serving all plant-based food one day a week. In the fall of 2014, this increased to two days a week, plus two days of vegetarian food. In the fall of 2015, an exclusively plant-based diet was adopted. [10] [11]
Amenities
The school operates from two campuses located in Malibu Canyon. In May 2015, five 300kWh solar panels, designed in the shape of sunflowers by James Cameron, were installed on site. “No one here becomes a star in one day – this is a myth. In Hollywood, everyone is plowing from morning to night and in earnest”
Producers Pavel Shumov and Gala Gumarova moved to the USA to make films. They say that they feel at home in Los Angeles, plan new projects and are proud of their 12-year-old daughter, who has already played in the TV series Black-ish, and learned the language of the Kiowa Indians to audition for a role in a film with Tom Hanks.
“The main thing in life is not to stand still”
We lived happily ever after in Moscow, and there were no reasons to “be sure to move”: by and large, even from the point of view of earnings, one could receive as much as one wanted, if there was a desire. We are a family of producers and managed to work everywhere – from the States to Asia – and do a lot of interesting things: we filmed commercials, clips.
When visiting other countries, we kept trying them on ourselves. In winter, they lived for months in Bali, then in Thailand, then in China or somewhere else, but it was perceived as a vacation. Our first trip around the USA lasted several months: we drove around the whole country from west to east, north and back, saw almost all major cities, but we didn’t experience such a feeling as in Los Angeles anywhere else.
Here, after leaving the LAX airport, we felt at home for the first time. It was doubly strange: because never in my entire life, when I returned to Moscow, this had happened, but here it immediately coincided.
In Russia, in the professional field, I reached a conditional ceiling: I could get a big salary in a large company, I was invited to work in neighboring countries for even more money than in the capital, but from the point of view of development, this did not promise anything interesting. And the main thing in life is not to stand still. And where better to do it than in the center of the global film industry?
Plus, the situation in Russia began to strain: everything began to crumble so much, and the most important thing – working laws for the life and safety of the family – was never created in the country. Therefore, even very well-to-do acquaintances honestly admit that “in which case” a normal court decision or investigation will be “buyed” through connections or for money without naive hope for the professionalism of civil servants: cases like the case with Ivan Golunov prove this, and such cases actually great amount. I think somewhere in the moment of realizing this, we “already moved. ” It remained to understand how.
How to move to the USA
The horrors of obtaining an American tourist visa are so ingrained in the minds that many believe that it is almost impossible to get to the States, especially for permanent residence. We thought so too.
It turned out that if you talk to trusted visa lawyers who will competently assess your specific case, it may turn out that your achievements are enough. It happened to us – after a year and a half of collecting and processing documents, we received an EB-1 (green card “For persons with extraordinary abilities”). The folder with the dossier that the lawyers put together for the consul was almost as thick as “War and Peace”, but the interview in Moscow lasted five seconds and ended with the words “Welcome to the United States”.
There are simpler and cheaper options. For example, O-1 (“Talent Visa”), which almost every second person receives, but this track has too many restrictions (family members are not allowed to work, and you can only work in the profession specified in the visa), so it good for single travelers.
We knew in advance when the interview would be approximately, and wanted to fly away immediately after, but the real estate market sank heavily – the ruble fell again, depreciating absolutely everything, so the apartment was sold for almost a year. However, in the end, it turned out that she left at the perfect time: we closed the deal, received passports with visas, and flew away almost the next day.
Reading hundreds of questions on the forums, I did not always find detailed answers, so in the end I made my own website
thegreencardshow.ru
, where I try to tell in as much detail as possible about everything that is important when moving and at the beginning of life in the USA: from the green card lottery and types of visas to exporting money, obtaining a driver’s license and living with different incomes.
“We have an award from Donald Trump at home”
The first thing to do in Los Angeles is to buy a car: the city is simply huge, metro or trolleybuses, as in Moscow, do not exist here in their normal form. Remembering the experience of a multi-month tour of the States, we took an SUV – and since then it has helped us out more than once.
The rental market is crazy enough, and I don’t consider living in someone else’s apartment or house a good option: paying $2,500 to infinity every month is stupid, unless you deduct these expenses from taxes. Therefore, we immediately invested the money from the sale of the apartment in the purchase of our own housing, and it was right.
Buying real estate in any city in the USA is, first of all, the choice of a school for a child. That is, first find a cool school, and then look online what is sold in the area that it serves. A house literally across the street from the home line to the school can cost a hundred thousand dollars less – simply because that side of the street hits a 2/10 establishment, and your side is 8/10 or even 10/10. So, for example, in Calabasas near excellent schools, sometimes it is simply impossible to buy a house or an apartment.
Friends who lived there say that realtors repeatedly knocked on them with an offer to sell the house – and the peak of requests fell at the beginning of the school year.
Schools here are divided into ordinary (public school), ordinary with additional funding (public charter), private (private) and a separate network of free schools “Magnet” (Magnet schools).
Between public and public charter, it is better to choose the second one: they have better provision and equipment, sometimes teachers. And recent studies have shown that the level of education in ordinary schools and expensive private schools is almost the same, so go to private, where you can get while living in any area, if you want to pay for yourself and your child useful friends who also spend tens of thousands dollars for education.
There is no way to get into the Magnit system schools except through a lottery. Your place of residence, income, skin color, etc. don’t matter – every fall you go to eChoices.lausd.net and fill out an application for any three Magnet Schools (for example, one with an emphasis on public speaking, the second is math, the third is art; or all three technical – as you wish), and if you get into the pool of students – cheers. If not, you get three points “for losing”. Having accumulated 12 points (that is, four years of failures) can choose almost any of the “Magnets” without a lottery.
As we found out at the end of our daughter’s first year, it turns out that there is one more path to Magnets – to be a genius.
In the USA, successful children are tracked very quickly: if your child, while studying according to the standard program, suddenly becomes a straight A student, this guarantees him close attention, since it is highly likely that the standards are too simple for him, and he can do more. Then the student is sent for testing for giftedness. When dialing more than 99. 9% of points he receives the status of Highly Gifted (highly gifted), which opens many doors for him.
Since our daughter Dana has successfully passed the test, she does not need to participate in the lottery: any school from the Highly Gifted Magnet list is waiting for her with open arms. This year, she received an award from the President of the United States, which is issued for academic excellence – so it’s even funny that now there is a piece of paper with Trump’s autograph at home.
Starting next year, she studies in a class for highly gifted students with a program and intensity that differs from the standard course. For example, they will be taught 2D and 3D animation and video software – and this is in the sixth grade! For about this reason, by the 12th year of study, many come out as some kind of trained monsters in their chosen areas.
Food and other pleasures
In the USA, there is a cult of food, so you can find absolutely any dish or ingredient that you can think of. Los Angeles in terms of restaurants and brilliant chefs is almost a mecca.
But if you are not a gourmet and you are interested in spending on everyday shopping, then everything is simple: you can eat very cheap (but healthy) and very expensive. Often the same products and brands can be found with several times the price difference, plus all chains of stores constantly have promotions, so if you live in saving mode, this will not affect your diet at all. Honestly.
A variety of clothes in Los Angeles is not really needed: 80% of the entire wardrobe we transported just hangs. All this race for brand names, typical for Moscow, is here, if it exists, then only if you live from party to party and rotate in circles where people are met by brands.
In ordinary life, this guy in a worn T-shirt, jeans and flip flops, drinking coffee at the next table, may turn out to be a multimillionaire (or maybe not).
In general, for life in LA, bring a few pairs of shorts, T-shirts, sneakers and flip flops. For a year or two of a comfortable life, such a set is definitely enough.
“Dana’s perseverance impressed the casting directors: a couple of days later an invitation came to audition for Netflix”
Now finding a legal job in Los Angeles is not a problem at all: if you need to get a job the next day after your arrival, then almost any store will take you. The minimum wage is $13.25 per hour, and from the first of July it will be $14.25 — that is, about $114 per day.
Finding a dream job is more difficult: in 90% of cases, the easiest way to get where you want is networking, that is, getting to know as many people as possible from this field or company. Through such acquaintances, you have a chance to receive recommendations or even news about a vacancy.
We have been working for ourselves for many years, and nothing has changed after the move: we are currently filming two films. One of them –
“The Last Empress of Fashion”
tells the story of Mila Anufriyeva, a woman who at the beginning of 19In the 1990s, she created a fashion empire in Russia, worked with brands such as Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, and such guests as Bill Clinton, Elton John, Eva Herzigova and Claudia Schiffer came to shows at her Vanity boutique. Then she lost her business and was forced to flee Russia. Now Mila lives in Italy, doing fashion and charity work in different countries, so we shoot in Russia, the USA, Guinea-Bissau, Italy, France, Great Britain and Belarus.
Our daughter also works in parallel with her studies – in two years in the USA she has already managed to study at two very good children’s acting schools. Next year, she goes to another one – even one level higher, and in the summer she has private classes with an acting teacher. Dana is crazy about acting: she has already played a play where she was given three roles at once – a glamorous girl, a tomboy and the Ghost in the elevator. She, like Raikin, changed clothes backstage in a few seconds in order to have time to jump onto the stage as a different person.
She also played in the movies – in the famous TV series Black-ish, she auditioned for a small role as a classmate of the main characters. This job was found for her by an agent.
In general, finding an actor’s agent is the main quest of Hollywood. Problem number 1 – everyone is looking for an agent. The second problem is to find someone who is not just listed as yours, but is really looking for a job for you. And thirdly, you need a good agent to want to hire you, since he literally has a choice of thousands of actors of different ages.Black-ish
It’s a little easier with children: you can simply order headshots from a good photographer (portrait photos of the actor in different images, showing him in the best possible way) and send the pictures like a fan to all children’s agents.
Dane’s agent was found through “people who know people who know other people.” She has been working in the industry for more than ten years and, in principle, takes no more than a dozen and a half children of different types.Black-ish was a fun experience for her. She was called to the Disney studio site by six in the morning. At seven, the dressers had already dressed her in an outfit “in the spirit of the 1980s” and taken her by bus to another district of the city, where they rented an entire school for filming.
And the “motor” was already at 11 – so they waited a long time, and then filmed two or three takes until five o’clock in the evening with obligatory breaks: while the series was being rearranged, the children went to class to study. By law, in California, a Studio Teacher works on the set, who teaches the school curriculum during filming. And children are required to unlearn at least four hours a day.
My daughter was delighted with all this: she changed clothes six times a day for different scenes, the atmosphere on the set was extremely friendly, everything was fun and interesting. She also received a fee of $200. After taxes, it turned out to be about 180.
Dana didn’t spend them. We opened a Coogan Account for her, a special account for child actors, named after Jackie Coogan, the first child movie star in history, who began acting in the early 20th century, and by the age of majority was left almost without a livelihood, as his mother and stepfather spent all his money. This precedent resulted in the law
California Child Actor’s Bill
, which protects child actors and all the money they earn.
She recently auditioned for the lead role in a new film with Tom Hanks, based on the book News of the world. At the audition, they had to play a girl raised by the Kiowa Indian tribe (this is a real story).
A week before the casting, Dana learned the required minimum in the Kiowa language, one of the oldest and most difficult languages on the planet.
We phoned the tribe, explained what was needed – they were terribly glad of such interest and willingly helped: they trained Dana to a level where she even received official approval for pronunciation. Then the daughter learned to quickly – and very cool – shoot with a bow; She also knows how to swim in a canoe and ride a horse. Will all this experience help you get the role? Not a fact: the casting is national, such projects are the chance of a lifetime, so tens of thousands of girls try out – and the one that wins can easily repeat the success of Millie Bobby Brown (“Very Strange Things”).
The results of the casting can be announced both in a week and in years: for example, one of the heroines of the film “Ready Player One” said in an interview that she received a call five years after the casting – and shooting began.
However, Dana’s perseverance and diligence impressed both her agent and casting directors: after a couple of days, an invitation to audition for Netflix came, and in May she performed in a two-hour dance performance.
This is how it all works: the more you try, perform, shine, the more chances you have to get the role of your dreams. Exceptions are rare: just like that, in one day, almost no one becomes a star – this is a myth. In Hollywood, everyone is plowing from morning to night and in earnest. This is really, really hard work.
“After a couple of glasses, every second one already told us that there is no life in the USA”
The circle of communication had to be rebuilt. The first contacts were business: a realtor, colleagues, at best, friends of friends. There is a rather diverse Russian-speaking community here: there are those who are positive and work with might and main, making their dreams come true, and there are those who are always disappointed with life. In the first months after arrival, we got to an event where it all started for health and ended for peace: after a couple of glasses of Californian, every second one already told us that there is no life in the USA, everything around is decay and we urgently need to leave back. In short, “save your life”! Since then, we have been trying not to get to some big gatherings of compatriots – we like to visit and host those with whom it is pleasant to communicate and make plans much more.
Is it easy to make friends with Americans? It’s like this: Iranians, Israelis, Russians, Europeans and Africans are all Americans. Everyone has their own cultural characteristics, habits, and so on.
On average, Americans in the hospital are very friendly: they smile, they praise you, your ideas, projects and undertakings, they are genuinely happy to know you, but often this is all zilch.
Here it is customary to say “Wow!” and admire each other, but without obligations. However, if you can still cross the line of ostentatious friendship and make real friends with Americans, they are just as wonderful people as we all are: they help in difficult times, give good advice and drink wine and vodka with perky toasts.
Personally, I don’t miss Moscow. Relatives and meetings with friends are the only things that are missing, but to “cry for birch trees” – this does not happen. We were in Russia a year ago, and the feeling that at least something had changed and suddenly became better, more attractive, and we want to return, did not arise for a second.
Moscow is beautiful, modern, and it’s cheaper to have fun. And Los Angeles is a modern village, ideal for family people and those who know how to sell snow to Eskimos: that is, either ambition or the desire to live a quiet family life are two approaches that set you in the right mood when moving.
What’s next? Anything we want. For this, they moved.
