Russian Academy of Crafts: new life for an old profession

The Russian Academy of Crafts is located in Moscow, a private institution of additional professional education, where short-term courses in Russian crafts are held, including training in the skill of a stove-maker and a chimney sweep. We learned how to create our own educational institution and how to succeed in this direction from the founder of the Russian Academy of Crafts, the author of the textbook “Kiln Technology”, a member of the Union of Designers – Nikolai Nikolaevich Matvienko.

F&S: Nikolai Niolaevich, tell us how it all started? How did the Russian Academy of Crafts appear?

NIKOLAI MATVIENKO: It all started in 2006, when in my book “New Russian Style” I published an announcement about master classes in designing, building fireplaces and stoves, and working with metal. At that time, I did not have the idea of creating an educational institution. Master classes did not imply then serious preparation, they were only a few classes. But it turned out that many people were interested in a more in-depth study of the profession of a stove-maker with obtaining certificates and certificates. It took several years to create the Academy. To register it as an educational institution, it was necessary to develop and coordinate curricula with the Moscow Department of Education and obtain a license. In addition, it was necessary to select qualified teachers, masters of industrial training, and establish relationships with federal educational structures.

F&S: And how long did it take?

NIKOLAI MATVIENKO: About two years. On December 25, 2008, the first group of students-stove-makers was formed, twelve people. They studied four times a week, in the evening, from six in the evening to nine, in a small auditorium. Among the first teachers were the founders of the Academy – me and the architect Evgenia Prosvirina. We were just happy that everything worked out! In February 2009, our first group of stove-makers received certificates signed by the President of the Moscow Chamber of Crafts – Leonid Koshelev. And our institution began to develop rapidly, new courses appeared: gunsmiths , restorers , jewelers … In those years, some courses of our Academy had no analogues in Moscow! Gradually, we began to introduce courses in new areas: accounting in restoration, decorative textured plaster, art stained-glass windows . ..

F&S: What courses are currently being held at the Russian Academy of Crafts and how long do they last?

NIKOLAI MATVIENKO: We offer three-month courses for a stove-maker, a blacksmith-gunsmith, a stained glass artist, a ceramist, a jeweler, and a restorer. The training program provides for 72 academic hours for students of art managers courses, expert appraisers of jewelry , historical reconstruction of metal products, as well as for the decorative plaster course.

F&S: What guided you in choosing the courses?

NIKOLAY MATVIENKO: The choice was preceded by monitoring and analysis of all existing courses in Russia. We were looking for a niche that was not yet occupied by anyone, so that there would be no competition from public and private educational institutions.

F&S: How relevant are craft skills today? Is this a popular trend?

NIKOLAI MATVIENKO: Today, more and more often you can hear controversy about the need to revive and preserve traditional handicrafts – crafts. Everywhere there are centers for the study and promotion of various types of crafts. Some of them belong to the category of applied arts, needlework: painting household items, carving, weaving, weaving, painting Easter eggs, macrame, embroidery with satin ribbons… Others belong to rather complex types of handicraft activities that until recently were part of working specialties. in vocational schools, and today are quite rare. Today, everything that is made by hand and keeps the warmth of the hands of the master is appreciated more than ever. But, unfortunately, there are not so many masters left, although their work is in demand. And today, it seems that only those professionals who are ready to share experience and train newcomers can support traditions and prevent unique professions from disappearing. That is why we created the Academy of Crafts, where you can get the basic skills of mastering a traditional craft. Our task is to develop and increase professional education for those who want to master a rare and necessary specialty.

F&S: Tell us a little about your students – who are they?

NIKOLAI MATVIENKO: Adult people come to us, very different in terms of education, education and professions. Someone at one time graduated only from high school and, changing many jobs, wandered in search of a specialty that could bring both material and moral satisfaction. Someone received a good classical education, but with experience and age became disillusioned with the chosen direction. And there are also those students who have a good education and work quite appropriate, but an inner voice tells them that life in the office, in the usual work brought to automatism, is no longer to their liking. Today, more and more people are turning their thoughts towards not just acquiring some kind of hobby, but a radical change in the type of activity. In the direction of such work, where you can create with your own hands, not just needlework, but professionally produce the necessary items that you cannot do at the factory, you will not find even in a large shopping center – this is what is called author’s products. And here it is not necessary to skeptically turn away from the words “craft” and “handicraft”. Let’s talk about the craft as a kind of area of creative application of professional skills and the creation of beautiful and unique products, according to ancient technologies, but in modern processing. And it should be noted that these are not separate entertaining gizmos, but quite professional items that are in demand on the modern market. For example, these are handmade forged products, window bars and candlesticks, replicas of ancient swords and modern hunting knives; this is carved and antique furniture, which the masters restore to its former splendor, turning it from forgotten junk into the main decoration of the house…

F&S: And fireplaces!

NIKOLAI MATVIENKO: Of course. There is nothing more fascinating than sitting in an old armchair and watching the wood crackle in a solid fireplace. And over the fireplace there is a restored clock… All these are quite recognizable objects of our everyday life, but we rarely think: who, in fact, does all this? After all, this is handmade. It must be said that among the students of the Academy’s courses there are not only brutal-looking men – the stereotypical image of a blacksmith and stove-maker – but also romantic young men and women. And if a modern urban dweller who came to the courses is not afraid of the hard and dirty work that lies behind romance, then he turns out to be a real master of his craft.

F&S: Where do your graduates go?

NIKOLAY MATVIENKO: According to statistics, a third of our graduates use the acquired skills as a hobby, about 30% open their own business, 20% find a job for hire, some of the graduates work as private craftsmen. I think this is a good result. To make it easy for students to navigate the labor market after completing the course, the Academy offers additional hours in art management, where they learn to sell antiques, jewelry, stoves, and fireplaces. This allows them to navigate the pricing policy in two lessons and learn how to adequately position their services in the labor market.

F&S: What is the main secret of the success of your courses?

NIKOLAY MATVIENKO: Positive emotions are born in a person when he creates something with his own hands. Wood, stone, glass, leather, metal come together and a new work of art appears. This is a powerful impulse that helps to live and overcome any crisis. Having created a beautiful product once, you want to continue to create so that the thing turns out to be more perfect. Once you find something you love, you can invest your time and money in it. Maybe it will not become a profession, but only a hobby, but with a favorite pastime, thanks to which you can switch and take a break from your main activity, live more interestingly. Creativity exists outside of economics and fashion, and will always bring joy.

F&S: How do you see the Russian Academy of Crafts in ten years?

NIKOLAY MATVIENKO: It’s hard to predict. But we are developing. Now we have a good network formation with federal districts where we have our partners. We teach in many federal districts in distance, network and part-time forms of education. Foreign educational centers are actively showing interest in us. I think that in ten years we will have our own building in the Moscow region. I am sure that other workshops will be added to our main workshops – ceramic, stained glass, jewelry, blacksmithing, carpentry.
