Receiver Is a Longshot to Make Patriot Squad

By TERRY PRICE

Hartford Courant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. —

National Football League training camps no longer have the look of a movie production with a cast of thousands.

An economy move instituted by league owners now limits preseason training-camp rosters to a maximum of 80 players. It is a new fact of pro football life that players such as the University of Connecticut’s Glenn Antrum must face.

It’s possible a free agent such as Antrum, who is in the New England Patriots’ camp at Bryant College, could be cut before he has the opportunity to take part in a full-squad practice.

“It’s conceivable that could happen,” said Patriots General Manager Patrick Sullivan.

The Patriots have 87 players on their roster, which means they would have to shed seven players if all 87 were under contract. But 13 players — six rookies and seven veterans — are unsigned, which will bring New England to 74 players under contract once the veterans report Friday.

In the past there was no roster restriction for the first few weeks of camp and teams often brought in 100 or more players. Now, every time an unsigned player comes to terms with the Patriots, someone — Antrum among them — gets a little closer to his release date.

“I know what it’s all about,” said Antrum, one of 17 free agents in camp. “It’s a business and I’ll treat it as a business. If you work hard and do the right things, you’re going to make the team.”

It’s possible the 80-man limit might not be a guillotine hanging over Antrum’s neck. After all, making the final 47-man roster is the ultimate goal and an 80-player limit won’t make it any more difficult.

“It’s easier,” Sullivan said. “There’s a lot more intense competition and you’re not lost in the numbers. For instance, last year we had 22 defensive backs and this year we have only 13 in camp. The result is you get more attention and more coaching.”

One of the reasons teams overstocked rosters in the past was to have enough players for practices. It saved a lot of wear and tear on the veterans and players assured of making the team.

But those days are gone, which is probably the main reason the New York Giants will spend a week of training camp practicing with the Patriots prior to their Aug.12 preseason game at Sullivan Stadium.

“With 80 players you don’t sign guys just for practice anymore,” said Dick Steinberg, the Patriots’ director of player development. “The players you sign and bring to camp have a legitimate chance to play in the NFL.”

Antrum caught a Connecticut single-season record 77 passes last fall to lead all National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I-AA receivers. He thought he would be drafted but he wasn’t, and he signed with the Patriots, the only team he contacted.

Antrum is bidding to become the second Connecticut player in the past two years to make the Patriots’ final roster. Last year free-agent linebacker Eric Naposki made the club. Naposki was left unprotected by the Patriots and signed with the Dallas Cowboys during the offseason.

But Antrum has almost no shot at making the Patriots, who have veterans Stanley Morgan, Irving Fryar, Cedric Jones and Sammy Martin returning at wide receiver. New England also took Hart Lee Dykes on the first round of the 1989 draft and Michael Timpson on the fourth. The team is expected to keep just five wide receivers.

With Fryar and Dykes unsigned and not in camp, Antrum might be spared an early release.

“I can offer whatever they want,” the 5-foot-11, 175-pound Antrum said. “I can play special teams or fourth or fifth receiver. They are going to open up the offense and throw a lot more, so they need receivers.

“I’m not going to worry about who’s there, who’s in front of me,” said Antrum.

Steinberg said the Patriots were attracted to Antrum because of his speed and college production. Antrum, from Ansonia, Conn., finished as Connecticut’s all-time leading receiver with 186 catches for 2,552 yards (13.7 average).

Antrum was selected first-team All-America by the Associated Press and was a first-team selection of the American College Football Coaches Association. He also was named Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year.

“Pamir-30” – a tent for the children’s military field camp “Berkut”

Children’s camp near Kolomna

A patriotic military field camp of the All-Russian Sports Complex “Berkut” will be set up in the vicinity of Kolomna near Moscow by the summer season. Dozens of boys and girls from Moscow, Ryazan, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Nizhnevartovsk, St. Petersburg, as well as from Belarus and Kazakhstan have already managed to fall in love with this tent camp.

Comfort tent in military field camp

As field living quarters in the camp “Berkut” tents from LLC “NPF ORT” “Pamir-30” are used. These are spacious frame tents that can accommodate 22-24 people with camping comfort (the area and height of the tent allow you to install up to 11 double beds with bedside tables and stools, as well as one stove).

Reliable tents of the “Pamir” series

A series of tents “Pamir” was developed specifically for the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Army tents served as a prototype. That is why the Pamir-30 is reliable and easy to operate like an AKM assault rifle. Ease of assembly is achieved due to the same length of all frame tubes, which are interchangeable elements. Therefore, the confusion of elements during assembly is excluded. In addition, structures consisting of equal-sized elements are easier to repair.

The tent is assembled by teenagers

The crosses, which are designed to connect the steel pipes of the frame, are also unified. Pipes are fixed in them with the help of spring-loaded clamps. All these engineering solutions greatly speed up the assembly process, and make it accessible even to a group of teenagers under the guidance of an experienced adult.

Use of non-woven tarpaulin

Tents with a PVC outer tarpaulin were ordered for the camp. This ensured complete moisture protection and windproof living space. The non-woven inner tent received good reviews. According to the organizer of the military-patriotic camp Evgeny Eduardovich Kirikov , non-woven fabric is better than fabric material – it is pleasant to the touch, and does not turn yellow from condensed moisture. Usually such a canvas is used in winter – when it is necessary to insulate the tent in the best possible way. However, the camp management found it possible to use the winter tent in the summer, and did not regret it. The children were also satisfied – after all, the Pamir-30 tent is quite large in volume; therefore, they were not stuffy in it.

Reinforced fasteners for inner tent

The Pamir-30 tent earned a high appraisal from the leadership and residents of the Berkut military field camp. However, it turned out that children can sometimes behave in an unusual way in a tent – not quite like adults. For example, why not try climbing up the inner tent? And now the fasteners of the awning are torn off, and the young mischievous lies on the floor with a bruised leg. Yes, and the floor mounts managed to break when falling. Therefore, the next batch of tents for the children’s camp is planned to be made with reinforced mounts.

Appendix N 13

to the Charter of the Internal Service

Armed Forces

of the Russian Federation

(for article 403)

1. Place for camping the camp is determined by the senior chief in agreement with state authorities and local self-government bodies of municipalities. The senior commander for surveying the territory of the proposed camping site is appointed by a commission, which includes representatives of the rear services, engineering, medical services, as well as representatives of local governments.

2. When determining the front of the camp, it is necessary to take into account the direction of the prevailing winds.

Crossing the front of the camp on public roads is not allowed. The flanks of the camp should be no closer than 60 m from the roads.

3. The camp is divided into rectangular quarters by longitudinal and transverse rulers, which simultaneously serve as roads.

4. In terms of depth, the camp is divided into lanes by three lines parallel to the front of the camp: front, middle and back. The distance between the rulers in depth is determined by the arrangement of tents, the necessary buildings and equipment. The width of the front line is at least 10 m, the middle and rear lines – at least 5 m. Between the rows of tents, paths up to 3 m wide are equipped in depth.

For the movement of vehicles along the location of the camp in its rear, roads are arranged – separately for wheeled and tracked vehicles.

5. The camp is divided by transverse lines perpendicular to the front.

Cross lines are laid between the battalions and separate subdivisions of the regiment. The camp site between the transverse rulers from the front line to the carriageways receives the name of the battalion (unit) that is located on the first lane of the site. The width of the transverse ruler is at least 3 m.

6. On the front page (between the front and middle lines) units are placed in tents in the order of their numbering.

The second lane (between the middle and rear lines) houses the headquarters of the military unit, a medical center, canteens, cellars for water and wash basins.

The third lane (between the rear line and the carriageways) houses toilets, warehouses, workshops and other outbuildings.

Ammunition and explosive stores are located outside the camp.

7. Tent nests are located along the front of the company – three or two nests. The size of the tent nest is 5 x 5 m. The distance along the front between the bases of the sides of adjacent nests is 2.5 m, and in depth – 5 m. The distance of tent nests from the nearest border of the line is at least 1.5 m. – 15 cm, wooden shields are laid on it.

To the right of the entrance to the tent, a sign indicates its number and senior (military rank, surname and initials). The dimensions of the plates: width – 20 cm, height – 15 cm. The inscriptions on the plate are applied in plain type on a yellow background with black paint. The plates are placed at a height of 50 cm from the ground to their lower edge.

Personnel are located on bunks or bunks. Bunks are equipped at the rate of 1.2 – 1.5 m2 per person. The height above the floor level should be 40 – 50 cm. The ratio of the height of the bunks and the sides excludes the contact of the tent cloth with the pillows. For long stays (more than 3 days) in the field, tents are equipped with places for storing outerwear, duffel bags, toiletries, bowlers, mugs. For a short stay (up to 3 days) in tents, personnel can be placed on the floor, insulated with spruce branches, reeds, straw or other improvised material and covered with tarpaulins (raincoats).

Sergeants are stationed with their units. For the foreman of the company, a separate tent is allocated, in which the office of the company is also placed.

Officers, ensigns, as well as female military personnel are accommodated in separate tents at the rate of one tent for three people or indoors.

A tent for the battalion headquarters is provided in the battalion.

8. Leisure tents are set up in the back rows of the company tents; next to them are equipped with platforms (classes) for general meetings of companies.

9. In the center of the military unit, on the line of the first row of tents, a banner bipod is installed. Behind the banner bipod on the line of the second row of tents, a tent is set up for the regiment on duty and his assistant. Guard tents are set up on the second lane.

10. On the first strip behind the tents of the mouths there are rooms (tents) for storing weapons, near which places for cleaning weapons are equipped, and behind them – cellars for water and wash basins.

11. Guard mushrooms for orderlies are installed on the front line, one on the right and left flanks of each battalion.
