The Mission Statement at Gan Malibu Preschool explains that they school provides a unique educational experience that nurtures the skills, emotional growth, character and spiritual development of the students. Gan Malibu is a Jewish school and is the destination for learning as well as a place of cultivating culture. The school encourages matzoh (good deeds) and middot (acts of kindness). Malibu Methodist Nursery School is a non-profit, non-sectarian community outreach of the Malibu United Methodist Church. The philosophy of the school is well known throughout Malibu and beyond. The centerpiece is the principle that children learn in an environment that is rich in “hands-on” explorations. The guidance of the staff supports risk taking, reflection, problem-solving and individuality.

The Nursery School does not believe in structured formal learning too early on. Therefore, they provide a curriculum that comes from children’s needs and interests rather than one imposed upon them by us. The teachers are trained specifically to work with preschool children.

Under The Oaks is an early childhood center that includes a nursery, pre-school and kindergarten programs. Learning at Under The Oaks takes place through imitation and example rather than through instruction. The school makes sure that the classroom is warm, inviting and a secure home like setting for the students. Each day time is allotted for music, arts and crafts, circle time activities and time for free creative play.

Work is a unique quality that Under The Oaks believes in. Whether the work consists of caring for the garden, baking bread or cleaning up after free play. They are working together or alongside peers to accomplish goals, which teaches the value of their own significance in the community.

Educational Services / Seaside Preschool/TK Bridges

SMMUSD’s early learning pathway program is designed to provide exceptional early childhood education for all district students by establishing neighborhood preschools, known as Seaside Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) programs known as Bridges TK.

Seaside Preschool Programs

Our Seaside Preschool Programs are offered at Edison Language Academy, Franklin Elementary School, Grant Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School and Webster Elementary School in Malibu. We will transition Will Rogers into a Seaside in the coming year as well. These preschool programs are designed to support the vertical alignment of a PK-TK-K pathway at our local elementary schools. With the exception of Edison (which must ensure language parity for a dual-language immersion), all of the Seaside programs serve students in the neighborhoods in which they are placed. At this time Franklin serves both Franklin and Roosevelt families and McKinley serves both McKinley and Roosevelt families. Webster Seaside supports all Malibu residents.

Seaside programs are Reggio-inspired, STEAM enhanced, and standards-aligned. Teachers work with students on Inquiry-based experiences and developmentally appropriate play. We work with our colleagues in the elementary schools to ensure students are well known when they leave our preschool program and enter the main elementary school in TK or Kindergarten.

Bridges Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

SMMUSD offers TK programs at Edison Language Academy, Franklin Elementary School, Grant Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School in Santa Monica and Webster Elementary School in Malibu. Due to enrollment restrictions we do not have TK programs at all sites. If your SMMUSD home school doesn’t have a TK, you will be able to enroll in TK at one of these sites, then return to your neighborhood school for Kindergarten through 5th grade. To begin the enrollment process, families will start at their home school and will later be directed to their designated TK site.  To find your neighborhood school, see school locater here:

Providing an early learning pathway at a child’s school of residence fosters strong relationships among families, community and educators, limits transitions from school to school for the youngest students, and ensures kindergarten readiness.
