AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED

We’re so proud!

Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.

SCHOOL-READY

What Learning Looks Like

Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

Macedonia KinderCare Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)

Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it.)

Our Teachers

We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.

Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!

A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH

An Artist’s Heart

“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.

We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.

Family Stories

Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!

  • Dear Don Hashagan,

I am writing to let you know how extremely happy I am with Kindercare and how much I want to express my most sincere gratitude to my son’s 4 teachers and the Director at the Macedonia center (301683).

I hope I am not too late. We moved last week and our teacher appreciation week information was packed and lost in the shuffle of Nicky’s things. As I’m unpacking things now I see the date was yesterday.

My husband and I have been married for 10 years and when Nicholas came along last year our world was turned upside down. We were so happy to finally become parents!!

After a long search we first chose different daycare center for him but very quickly we became uneasy and concerned with his care. We received inconsistent reports and rarely a full daily report of his meals or what he did during the day. There was always someone new there taking care of him each day when I dropped him off. People I’ve never met before. And when we picked him up they couldn’t tell us anything specifically about his day. When my husband brought him home throwing up repeatedly one day and I couldn’t find anyone who might know why or who last fed him, we decided that was it. He never returned.

It was so scary being a first time mom and having to trust like that and he was only 7 weeks old!! Luckily I was able to get some time off work to conduct another search and after meeting Ms. Regina the infant1 teacher at the Macedonia Kindercare we immediately felt comfortable and after a second meeting we decided to take him here.

It took a couple weeks to get rid of that uneasy feeling, I can’t lie, but Ms. Regina, Sr. Pam and Ms. Laureen were there every single day. They updated me on Nicholas’ progress when I dropped him off in the mornings and they updated my husband every single night when he picked him up.

We always receive lots and lots of advice from Ms. Regina when we ask for it. She is has been a lifesaver to us. With my husband and my families being distant and not a lot of friends with infants to ask questions, she is a comfort and a help and an amazing resource. I don’t know what we would’ve done last year with out her!!!! We mean this in all sincerity.

Now that Nicholas has just turned one (3/28) he’s graduated to the Infant2 room with Ms. Jasmine and he is loving it!! He’s been there now one month. He gets to play with older kids and more age appropriate toys. He gets to sit on a little chair at a table with other kids and eat his meals. He receives more one on one time with Ms. Jasmine. To me personally, he’s seems to have become so much happier since he’s been in her care. He’s in a crazy good mood when he comes home. He’s more independent, louder, and attempting more things on his own. He’s even starting to walk now. I realize this is normal age progressive stuff, but I really believe Ms Jasmine and the new environment has made it easier for him to grow.

I just hope that I am not too late to express my appreciate for these 4 great teachers! And Ms. Brandi! She is an amazing Director. Not only in how much she loves Nicholas, but I can see how she loves every child. She knows them all by name and is just so kind and generous with her time. She’s very easy to talk to. While it is hard to hear “you need a doctors note” or “you have to pick up your son he has a fever, etc”… knowing we both work, she’s very empathetic and understanding. I realize she has a difficult job, but she does it very well!

These teachers mean the world to me and my husband!!

    Thanks again,

Rebecca and Brian Ruvolo, parent’s of Nicholas Ruvolo (Infant2)

  • Good morning,

Hope this email finds you well. It is wonderful that next week is Teacher Appreciation Week as I truly appreciate the caring staff at the Macedonia, OH KinderCare Learning Center.

My oldest daughter, Julia, was enrolled in this facility from age 2.5 – 9. During her time at KinderCare, she received the best care and, I believe, the best education to help her be successful in school. She is a star student in the Nordonia School District and so much of this is because of the care and learning she received at this facility. Because of her exceptional experience at this location, I knew when our little one, Jane Walsh, was born that this is where she needed to be for care.

Jane has attended KinderCare from the age of 12 weeks old. Sister Pam was a wonderful caretaker in the infant room. Her pleasant demeanor, fun sense of humor, and caring touch helped Jane (and me!) during this transition period. Leaving your infant under another’s care is so difficult, but Sister Pam was always prepared to fill me in on everything Jane did that day. She was always holding babies, feeding babies, smiling and singing to the babies. It made me feel confident I made the right decision for care.

Jane transitioned to the Toddler and Discovery Preschool classrooms and continued to blossom. A brief portion of her time was spent with Lawanda and the majority of her day was spent with Tawanda.
Both were always very kind to Jane and she looked forward to attending “school” every day. Tawanda made some extra efforts with Jane, sending home worksheets to help Jane with her fine motor skills. She always had a nice story to share about Jane’s day as well. Lawanda was often reading to Jane – Jane’s favorite activity – so I appreciated this very much. Jane really grew up in their room. I am so appreciative of their care.

Jane just turned three in early March 2014. She recently transitioned to the Preschool room. Miss Chenai and Ms. Val have made her feel so welcomed. Ms. Val was a favorite staff member of my daughter, Julia, so it’s wonderful that she is also there to support Jane. Jane is very excited to be with the “big kids” and has transitioned well.

Jane is enrolled in the weekly music class and enjoys her time with Cheryl very much. Jane also enjoys teaching me the new songs she learns in class.

Additionally, Brandi and Esther both excellent. I’ve known Esther for years and I’m so glad she remains at the Center. She is just the nicest person you could ever hope to know. Brandi’s arrival and management has been great as well. I appreciate her communications and, from my perspective, there seems to be more organization with the administrative requirements of the center. She is also super-sweet.

So, the fun part – As clearly stated above, I know the staff in this building cares so much for the children in attendance. They don’t just watch the kids like a babysitter, they are teaching them social and educational skills that will benefit them as they enter school. Yesterday evening, I asked Jane to sit down and sign a Mother’s Day card for her grandmother. I fully expected her to draw some lines or little scribbles. I left her to her task and came back to find she had drawn a heart and written her name. No guidance from me – just sat quietly and signed the card. I nearly fell over. For an early age 3 child to do this without supervision or repeated instruction – it was amazing! I absolutely, 100% credit this to your staff at KinderCare Macedonia, OH. I was super impressed and Jane was so proud of herself. The picture of her accomplishment is attached. Your team is amazing!

I know there are additional staff members that engage directly and indirectly with Jane each day. Please know I am thankful for their care of my daughter. She is precious to me and it means so much that she is precious to them as well.

    Thank you,

    Jennifer Walsh

Description:

Dear parents,
I m Asli. I worked as a school counselor and a volunteer educator for several years with age groups ranging from 1 to 17. Yet, I must confess the most fun part was spending time with the infantsand preschool age-group. I must have some sort of aura that works like a magnet, so I can attract kids right away. Many times in my life, I heard parents saying, “Wow s/he would never let someone whom s/he meets for the first time hold her; you are the first person. ” 🙂
I earned my Master of Science degree In Rehabilitation Counseling and became Certified Rehab Counselor in 2012. However, after giving birth to my son in 2013 – who was nicknamed “wide-awake” by the nurses right after he was born 🙂 – I decided to take care of kids as a stay home mom. That is, I have been fortunate enough to do this job professionally for about a five years now.
As an addicted caretaker, I realized how much I enjoy taking care of kids and spending quality time with them. Since I consider this endeavor my future job, I decided to run a small scale in-home childcare. If you would like to receive personable, intimate, as well as affordable in-home childcare to your child in a very cozy home with full of developmentally appropriate toys and games that locates in a very safe and well-established Walden Community, I look forward to meeting you. :)…

North Macedonia ready for anything – Mir – Kommersant

After 17 years as an EU candidate, North Macedonia will finally start accession negotiations next week. To do this, Skopje had to accept the French formula for resolving the dispute with Sofia, allowing the Bulgarian veto to be unblocked. This is another major concession on the arduous path of Euro-Atlantic integration, along with the resolution three years ago of a decades-old dispute with Greece, when the Macedonians agreed to change their country’s name to North Macedonia. However, even after this, Skopje’s speedy progress into the EU is not guaranteed. With details – the correspondent of “Kommersant” in the Balkans Gennady Sysoev.

The Macedonian Parliament adopted the French formula for settling the dispute with Bulgaria on Saturday evening, after a bitter three-day debate that was accompanied by massive opposition protests. For the past two years, Sofia has blocked the start of negotiations on the accession of North Macedonia to the EU, demanding from it changes in legislation regarding the rights of the Bulgarian minority and the use of the Bulgarian language. The French proposal included the inclusion in the Macedonian laws of a provision on the presence of a Bulgarian national minority in the country, as well as the recognition that the Macedonian language has Bulgarian roots. At the end of June, the Bulgarian parliament approved the French formula and authorized the government to lift the veto against Skopje. North Macedonian President Stevo Pendarovski and the government supported the French proposal, but it was strongly opposed by the opposition, led by the moderately nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party, who accused the authorities of surrendering national interests.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also joined the disputes in the North Macedonian parliament. On Thursday, she personally addressed the Macedonian deputies, urging them to agree to the French compromise proposal. On Saturday evening, all 68 parliamentarians of the government majority (there are 120 deputies in parliament) voted for the adoption of the French formula, the opposition left parliament on the eve of the vote. Thus, the way was opened for the start of negotiations on the accession of North Macedonia to the EU.

These negotiations will start on July 19 at an intergovernmental conference in Brussels. Prime Minister of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovachevsky, who will represent the country at the conference, announced that he will deliver his speech in the EU in the Macedonian language, that the rights of the Macedonian language are guaranteed, and there will be no negotiations on nationality (Macedonians).

The decision of the Macedonian Parliament, opening the way for the country to the European Union, was warmly welcomed by the EU and the US.

“It was a historic opportunity, and you took advantage of it. A huge step towards a European future, your future,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted.

However, as Kommersant’s European diplomatic sources admit, Skopje’s speedy promotion to the EU is by no means guaranteed. Even though no other country’s path to Euro-Atlantic integration has been as difficult as that of North Macedonia, and no other country has had to make such significant concessions for this.

In 2019, Skopje agreed with Athens to resolve a long-standing historical dispute with Greece – then the Macedonians agreed to change the name of their country to North Macedonia. This opened the way for them to NATO, where North Macedonia joined a year later, but did not unblock the path to the EU, although Skopje received candidate status back in 2005. At first, France opposed the start of negotiations with the Macedonians, demanding that the EU develop a new approach to such negotiations. And when the new rules for joining the EU were prepared, Bulgaria remembered the “infringement of the rights of the Bulgarian minority”, blocking the start of negotiations with Skopje.

But even now, when all these obstacles are removed, the barriers to North Macedonia’s way to the European Union remain. And it’s not just that Skopje will have to agree on positions with the EU on 35 different areas, which are grouped into six “clusters”, which will no doubt take years.

According to the French formula for resolving the dispute between Skopje and Sofia, North Macedonia will have to introduce a provision on the Bulgarian national minority in the constitution. And this requires a qualified majority in parliament – 80 out of 120 mandates.

The head of the opposition VMRO-DPMNE, Christian Mickowski, assured that his party “will never support the inclusion of the Bulgarians in the constitution” and that 44 of its deputies have already written the corresponding statements, having certified them by a notary.

Problems for Skopje may also arise from the Bulgarian side. There, at the end of June, a vote of no confidence was passed in the government of Kiril Petkov, who supported the French proposal to resolve the dispute with North Macedonia, and now a new cabinet must be formed in Bulgaria, or the country is waiting for early parliamentary elections. And the new Bulgarian government may again have questions for its neighbors. So the path of North Macedonia to the EU will certainly continue to be rocky.

The Republic of Macedonia (officially, at the insistence of Greece, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is a state in the Balkans, located in South-Eastern Europe. It borders Serbia and Montenegro in the north, Bulgaria in the east, Greece in the south, and Albania in the west. Macedonia is a continental country (landlocked). The area of the country is 25.3 thousand square meters. km, 49% of this territory is occupied by forests, while here you can find different tree species – from oak and hornbeam with an admixture of maple, linden, pine in the lower mountain belts to beech and beech-fir with an admixture of pine and spruce above 800-1000 m. gently sloping mountains, Macedonian forests create excellent conditions for hiking and recreation. At the same time, special attention is paid to nature protection: large national parks have been created on the territory of the country – Mavrovo (between Ohrid and Tetovo, 73.1 thousand hectares), Galchitsa (between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, 22.7 thousand hectares), Pelister ( west of Bitola, 1600 hectares) and Krushevo, as well as the Yasen forest, which received the status of a national park in 1958

Macedonia is a country where you can have a wonderful rest and touch the origins of Orthodox culture. The real pearl of this region is Lake Ohrid, located at an altitude of 695 m above sea level (area 348 sq. km, depth – up to 285 m), and, apparently, connected by underground karst cavities with Lake Prespa. This is one of the most beautiful and cleanest lakes in Europe, a popular resort area. The city of Ohrid, located on the shore of the lake, is famous for its architectural monuments – the basilica of St. Sophia of the 11th century and the church of St. Clement of the 13th century, in which Byzantine frescoes have been preserved, the National Museum and the castle of Tsar Samuil (XI century) are also interesting. One of the monasteries in the city is the place where the educators Cyril and Methodius created the Slavic alphabet and first began to teach it to their students. In all major cities – Bitola (former Monastir), Prilep, Kumanovo, Skopje – many architectural monuments of the Middle Ages and antiquity have been preserved, and the carefully preserved natural environment allows us to consider the country one of the best European centers for active recreation – hiking and mountain tourism, rafting and sport fishing.

Climate

Most of the country is temperate continental, and in the south it is close to Mediterranean. Summer is hot and dry: the average temperature is +18…+22ºС. It’s a little colder in the mountains. Winter is wet and mild: average temperature is -1…-3ºС. The summer holiday season lasts from May to September.

Population

The population of the country exceeds 2 million people, of which 65% are Macedonians, 20% are Albanians, 5% are Turks, 3% are Roma – 2.7%, 2% are Serbs, 2.3% are representatives of other nationalities.

Language

The state language is Macedonian, belonging to the group of South Slavic languages, which has two equal writing systems – one based on the Latin alphabet, and the other based on the Cyrillic alphabet (in everyday life it is more common, used by 70% of the country’s population). At least 21% speak the Albanian language, which since 2001 has had official status in areas densely populated by Albanians. Also in use, although not so common, are Turkish, Serbian, Croatian and other languages.

Religion

The majority of the population (about 67%) belongs to the Macedonian Orthodox Church, which declared its autonomy in 1958, and in 1967 declared its independence from the Serbian Orthodox Church, but its autocephaly is not recognized by other Orthodox churches. Muslims make up 30% of the total number of believers, adherents of other faiths – 3%. There are 1,200 Orthodox churches and monasteries and 425 mosques in Macedonia.

Time

Time in Macedonia is 2 hours behind Moscow time.

Currency

The monetary unit of the republic is the Macedonian denar, equal to 100 deni. In circulation there are coins in denominations of 50 deni, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 denar and banknotes in denominations of 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 denar. Currency can be exchanged at banks and numerous exchange offices. Banks usually work from 7:00 to 13:00 on weekdays, some large banks are open until 19:00 on weekdays and until 13:00 on Saturdays (Sunday is a day off). Exchange offices are open from 7:00 to 19:00. Credit cards are not very common in the country: you can pay with them only in expensive metropolitan hotels and shops, but you can withdraw cash from them without any problems.

Transport

Vehicle rental

International car rental companies have offices at Ohrid and Skopje airports. To rent, you need an international driver’s license, in some cases you will need to make a cash deposit, the amount of which depends on the brand of car. Local taxes (up to 15%) and an insurance fee are additionally paid. Some roads in the country are paid: travel is paid at special turnstiles at the entrance in cash or with special coupons.

Flight from Moscow to Macedonia

At the moment there are no direct regular flights from Russia to Macedonia, the flight is via Belgrade.

Visas

Citizens of the Russian Federation can enter the territory of the Republic of Macedonia without a visa if they have the original invitation certified by the relevant authorities in Macedonia, or the original tourist voucher confirming the payment for the hotel and other services for the entire stay in the country, or a valid Schengen visa category “C”. In all other cases, a visa must be issued in advance at the consular section of the Macedonian Embassy in Moscow.

Macedonia: why the name of this country haunts the Greeks

The Greeks believe that by calling itself Macedonia, this country has stolen their historical heritage. But is this enough to settle a 27-year-old dispute with Athens?

For more than 10 years, Macedonia has adhered to the so-called antiquization concept. According to this theory, modern Macedonians are not Slavs, but direct descendants of the Macedonians of antiquity.

Thus, the Macedonian authorities for a long time showed a huge figure to neighboring Greece.

But in 2017, the government changed in the country, and the new authorities took a radically different path in the hope of finally resolving one of the longest-standing diplomatic disputes in Europe.

  • “Macedonia is Greece”: thousands of Greeks protest against the name of the neighboring country
  • Did Alexander the Great love not only women?
  • The word “Macedonia” complicates relations between the US and Greece

After Macedonia’s independence in 1991, Greece refused to recognize the constitutional name of this republic.

Greece insists that only its northern province can be called Macedonia, and argues that the very fact that the former Yugoslav Republic calls itself the same means that this country has territorial claims against Greece.

Athens also accuses Skopje of stealing Greek cultural heritage.

In January 2018, thousands of Greeks protested in Athens against Macedonia will change its name.

High price

Macedonia, apparently, decided that it was the same with music to die, and went on the offensive.

Airports, motorways and stadiums have been renamed in honor of Alexander the Great and his father Philip, whom the Greeks regard as their heroes.

Then the statues began to be erected. The capital of Macedonia is full of such monuments. On some, Alexander the Great is depicted as a formidable warrior on horseback, on others – as a baby on his mother’s lap.

But the change in government changed a lot. The new administration, headed by the Social Democrats, opposes antiquisization, not only because of diplomatic interests, but also for reasons of taste. The authorities are already pursuing a policy of phasing out this concept.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has announced that Skopje Airport will no longer be named after Alexander the Great. The same fate befell the highway leading to Greece: henceforth it is called the “Freeway of Friendship.”

More importantly, Macedonia has already hinted at the possibility of a compromise in the name of the country.

“The fact that the government has decided to rename the airport and the motorway shows the seriousness of our intentions,” Defense Minister Radmila Sekerinska said.

Image caption,

Macedonian Defense Minister Radmila Sekerinska is optimistic about the talks with Greece

“This is not a show. We want our country to get rid of this heavy burden that is costing us dearly,” she adds.

Fundamentals of Identity

Athens responded positively to these initiatives. The talks between the foreign ministers were followed in January by a meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries, Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras.

US diplomat Matthew Niemets, who serves as the UN mediator between Athens and Skopje in the dispute over the name of Macedonia, sees the meeting as a breakthrough. His optimism did not dry out even after a visit to Skopje and Athens in early February.

“I am deeply convinced that the time has come to sort out this issue, to finally resolve it, so that the region can move forward, and that these two countries are friends and cooperate,” he says.

But both in Greece and Macedonia there are enough people who want this process to fail.

Last weekend, tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Athens. They had only one requirement: the new name of the neighboring country should not contain the word “Macedonia”.

“They are Slavs,” said one of the demonstrators, pointing her finger at a map she had drawn.

“They are not Macedonians. We are Macedonians. Macedonia is Greek, and no one can take that name, no one else can use it,” she said.

Even those Greeks who did not demonstrate and who want a solution to this conflict say that the question of the name of the neighboring country hurts their sense of their own identity.

Residents of the Greek city of Thessaloniki consider themselves Macedonians, and they are often outraged by the fact that residents of a neighboring country call themselves the same way.

The “M” word

Greece’s official position has long been that its neighboring country should adopt a compound name, such as “New Macedonia” or “Upper Macedonia”.

But the Greek opposition party New Democracy decided it could use the dispute for its own political ends.

The small party “Independent Greeks”, which is part of the ruling coalition, also opposes any mention of Macedonia in the name of the neighboring country.

George Tsogopoulos, a foreign relations specialist at the Israeli think tank BESA, says the Greek demonstrators are wrong. But he is not optimistic about the outcome of the talks either.

“I don’t understand why so many people are overwhelmed with optimism,” he says.

“Substantial differences remain between the parties. Greece wants it to be the name of the country that would be used everywhere in the international arena, and not just in bilateral relations,” he says. “And for this, Skopje will have to change the constitution.”

“The protesters are being asked not to include the word ‘Macedonia’ in the name of the country, but this is completely unrealistic. Although, given that public opinion in Greece is based on disinformation, they can be understood,” the expert adds.

Posters reading “We are Macedonia” have appeared in front of the National Assembly building in Skopje. The authors of the slogan are sure that the right to self-determination is more important than the Greek fears.

But the protest demonstrations in Macedonia were few in number. Analyst Sasho Ordanovski believes that the majority of the population does not mind changing the name of the country.

“The people in Macedonia are very pragmatic. People are fed up with their lives not getting better,” he says.

“They think about it and talk about it. But they also think about NATO, about security, about the European Union, they want to be part of the world,” adds Sasho Ordanovski.

Negotiations on the name of the country have been deadlocked for 27 years. The question is how determined today’s leaders are.

The longer the negotiations go on, the more chances the opponents of such a decision will have to organize their actions on both sides of the border.

And this can drag out the argument around one word for a long time.

The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia | UN Women

EU candidate The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia [1] is a landlocked state located on the Balkan Peninsula. According to the last census in 2002, about 2 million people live in the country. According to the census, the largest ethnic group of the population are Macedonians. In second place are the Albanians. The main ethnic minority groups are the Roma and the Turks. The official and most widely used language is Macedonian, which belongs to the South Slavic language group. In municipalities where ethnic groups make up more than 20% of the total population, the second official language is also the language of that ethnic group.

In 1994, the Former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) Macedonia ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and its Optional Protocol. In 2011, the country’s government signed, but has yet to ratify, the Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe (CE) on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.

FYR Macedonia has passed a number of laws and introduced mechanisms to promote gender equality. In accordance with the Law on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men,[2] public institutions are required to ensure equality of rights and opportunities for women and men and to mainstream gender into their policies, strategies and budgets through specific measures aimed at reducing gender inequalities.

Despite significant legislative changes, gender gaps and inequalities persist at all levels. Women make up only 39.5% of the total employed population, while their hourly wage rate is 17.9% lower than that of men [3] . . [4]

Women’s participation in decision-making processes remains limited. Any progress, such as increasing the level of women’s representation in the National Parliament and municipal councils, is conditional on the introduction of electoral quotas. In executive bodies where quotas do not apply, women’s representation is low: women hold only 10% of ministerial positions and 4% of positions as mayors. [5]

Women living in FYR Macedonia suffer greatly from the domestic and gender population: of the total number of survivors of violence, women account for 82% and in 93% of cases convictions for domestic violence are made in regarding men. [6] There is a huge need for more research and data collection on gender-based violence.

Opened in 2006, UN Women’s project office works to make progress for both men and women. To promote gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women FYR Macedonia is implementing initiatives and projects in the following key areas:

  • leadership and political participation;
  • elimination of violence against women;
  • national planning and budgeting

We provide expert support in the efforts of the government and civil society to fulfill the national and international obligations of FYR Macedonia in the field of gender equality, in particular in the implementation of laws and policies to fulfill its obligations under CEDAW, the Istanbul Convention of the CoE and the Beijing Platform for Action.

UN-Women supports national efforts to strengthen women’s leadership, increase the number of elected women politicians at the local level, and build their capacity to mainstream gender into policies.

As the lead UN agency in the fight to end violence against women, UN Women assists government and civil society in implementing activities aimed at preventing domestic violence, protecting victims and raising awareness of gender-based violence. We work with government officials to provide better and more comprehensive domestic violence prevention and protection services.

UN Women FYR Macedonia assists central and local governments in mainstreaming gender equality and gender-responsive budgeting into national planning and policy development. We also work with non-government actors to hold the government accountable for its commitment to gender equality.
