I work as a QA engineer and receive 178,000 ₽ per month

Author profile
Profession: QA-engineer
City: Moscow
Age: 24 years old
Experience: 1.5 years
Choice of a profession
Education was ITSHY, studied at the programmer. I didn’t become a programmer: it turned out to be too difficult for me, the code was very tiring in a short time and nothing was clear. Univer pulled out with great difficulty for triples, interrupting from retake to retake.
By chance, after graduating from university (2020), I stumbled upon the specialty of a software tester and decided to try it. In a few months I learned on my own, because yesterday’s student did not have money for courses. Used articles, youtube, crowdtesting platform.
I had no experience, I was looking for a job for a month, there were 5 social security payments for a hundred or two responses, in January 2021 I received 2 offers. One was a 6-hour day and 38k on hand, the other was a full day and 65 after the test, 50 during. The format is strictly in the office. Chose the second.
The essence of the profession
Everyone has mobile applications on their phones. They are made by developers according to the TOR written by analysts or product managers – it describes what functions should be and how they should work. I am engaged in testing the requirements themselves for adequacy and checking that the developers have done everything exactly as it is written in the requirements. In fact, I poke buttons in the application most of the time.
I also write some code to make the application checks automated so that the buttons are poked by themselves, without my participation. So far, this is very difficult for me, I started doing this six months ago. During my work, my love for writing code has not increased at all.
Place of work
I work for about six months in a large company that has an IT direction. I am a small manager, there are 2 QA in my team and I am looking for a third one.
Working day
I open the board with tasks, choose what I will do today from what has already been done by the developers. I choose by priority – what needs to be done as soon as possible, or – if everything is approximately the same in priority – what I like best. I like to test new functionality, come up with checks.
I download the application on a test phone, open the requirements and start checking for compliance with the TOR. If I find discrepancies, I start a task for correction. The developer should take it in the near future, redo it and give me the application again.
Then there are a lot of calls, they take up to 4 hours a day. Usually about 2, but sometimes I have to conduct interviews for my team, each from half an hour to an hour and a half.
In addition to calls with the development team and managers, there are calls with my employees – I need to deal with their development, motivation, goals and work with dissatisfaction. For me, these are new responsibilities, because I became the head a couple of months ago. They asked me if I wanted to try, I said that I did. I don’t know if I can handle it, it seems to me that yes, but there is a possibility that colleagues have a different opinion.
Part-time jobs
The salary is more than enough, especially given my reclusive lifestyle. I am thinking about starting teaching Russian to foreigners (I have about B2-C1 English), but in connection with recent events, this is a illusory prospect – it is not clear how to receive payment from abroad.
Is it possible to earn extra money as a QA engineer? I don’t know, it seems to me that it is difficult to find such a thing, but it is possible. With hourly pay.
Income
Now the salary is 178 thousand on hand. There was also a bonus, with it it turns out 195 thousand on hand.
I was offered this salary six months ago (December 2021), when I didn’t even have a year of work experience (a couple of weeks weren’t enough). This is a lot for my experience then, especially since at the time of this proposal I had no experience with writing automated tests, that is, code. Those QA who write code are paid more, but even for such QA with a year of experience, 178 (195) thousand is quite a lot.
Satisfied with the salary so far. I hope to move up by becoming a leader and developing the ability to write code for automated tests somewhere in the region of 220-250k per hand.
Expenses
I save about 100 thousand monthly, I don’t really follow the budget. The money goes to food delivery from Vkusville and English – I have classes 3 times a week. More recently, I started going to singing at a private school, I practice 2 times a week.
I want to skydive and get an AFF certificate, it will still take 30 thousand, I haven’t looked at prices for a long time.
Financial goal
I want to have several million in my accounts, but I don’t know why yet. I used to think about getting a mortgage in Moscow when I saved up for the first installment, but after the events in Ukraine I decided that I didn’t want to stay in Russia. I haven’t chosen a country for moving yet – it’s too early, anyway now I’m unlikely to be able to find a job abroad, I have too little experience. In a year and a half I will be able to, if the Internet is not banned and IT specialists are not allowed to travel abroad.
Future
I think I will stay in QA. The goal is to become some kind of Head of QA with a large staff in subordination and receive a large salary by the standards of the country where I live.

QA engineer is a software development quality specialist. QA English quality assurance. – Approx. ed. stands for quality assurance.
QA engineers are often confused with testers. However, there is a difference between them. The latter test the finished product, and QA monitors the quality of the product at the development stages so that there are no errors and bugs. That’s how they make it better.
In large corporations, QA departments are large, and there the positions of QA engineer and tester can really be separated. But in small companies and startups, a tester is like a human orchestra: he does everything.

Duties and tasks of a QA engineer
A QA engineer controls the quality of a product. Here is what it does specifically:
- analyzes the requirements for a product – a program or an application;
evaluates the work of the program; - communicates with managers and business analysts;
- works with test documentation;
- plans the testing process;
- tests products;
- records defects;
- communicates with the team on found bugs and makes sure that they are fixed;
- retests products;
- analyzes testing, looking for the cause of defects;
- improves work processes after analysis.
Here is the algorithm for working on the program:
- The company has a task plan and documents that describe the program at the completion stage.
- Developers write a program and look for critical errors in it. Then they release the finished program or an intermediate version for closed or open testing.
- The tester checks the program in all available modes. He looks at what worked and what didn’t. Records failures and errors step by step. Gives its records of inconsistencies to developers.
- Developers are reconnecting. They fix the errors and inconsistencies found by the QA engineer.
- Then the QA specialist checks the program again. If he finds bugs, he gives it for revision. This continues until the program is complete.
What a QA engineer should know
A QA engineer should:
- understand the life cycle and stages of software development;
- know programming languages if involved in automated testing;
- own new technologies for testing and know new tools for automatic and manual testing;
- be able to use the HTTP protocol and work with server response codes;
- know English well;
- use program bug-tracking systems that help software developers account for and control bugs. – Approx. editors, such as Jira and YouTrack;
- know the SQL programming language;
- work with the DOM API;
- know JSON data and HTML languages;
- Work with cookie data & session temporary tables in the database that can store unique user-specific data that is deleted manually or when it expires or the session expires. – Approx. ed.;
- understand object-oriented programming;
- be able to maintain test documentation;
- understand scrum, agile or lean methods;
- test programs based on the technology stack, a set of technologies on the basis of which a website or application is developed. – Approx. ed., for example, GoLang and/or php (symfony), PostgreSQL and/or Clickhouse;
- know CI&CD systems: Docker, GitLab, Kubernetes programs or their equivalents;
- understand HighLoad highload systems. – Approx. ed., Microservice Architecture software aimed at the interaction of small, loosely coupled and easily modified modules. – Approx. ed.;
- be able to work with processing methods and big data tools;
- be able to write test cases and test plans.
Artem Borodatyuk advises to study the knowledge map developed by Netpeak Group. So you will understand what skills QA should have at different levels.
Types of QA engineers
There are several types of QA engineers that differ in skill and experience:
- Intern, novice, assistant – specialist without experience – trainee.
- Junior tester – 0.5–1.5 years of experience – junior.
- Intermediate level tester – 1.5-4 years of experience – middle.
- Senior tester – more than five years of experience – senior.
- QA tech lead.
Sometimes you can come across the concept of “functional manager” (QA functional manager) – a specialist who manages a team of testers and testing a specific project.
- If a company has a large quality department, then the highest position of QA engineer is the head of QA department.
Types of QA-engineers are also divided by products and areas:
- site testers;
- mobile application testers – mobile QA;
- usability testing – testers check the usability of a program or site;
- testers of games (game tester), client-banks and so on.
According to the mechanism of testing and specialization, three groups are distinguished:
- Manual, or manual, testing. It tries to do what the user will do in the future.
- Automation QA. Here you need to use the results of manual testing. The specialist writes the program code that imitates the actions of the user. This saves check time. In this case, the tester definitely needs to know the programming language, but it is not necessary to be able to write code.
- Performance QA is very rarely singled out.
QA Tools
Test Tools are software products that help QA engineers organize their work at every stage of software testing.
The choice of tools for the work of a QA engineer depends on the type of testing, personal preferences and the specialist’s place of work. Over time, each tester has his own set of tools that he uses.
Manual testing
The test engineer predicts how the user will behave and checks the developed program. Its task is to find behavior that will be different from the expected.
Manual testing can be done:
- as part of integration testing – work with other software and systems;
- within the regression – testing changes;
- in system functional testing.
Manual testing helps to find and eliminate weak points, reduce the number of bugs, ensure the smooth operation of systems, evaluate the usability of the program.
There are special programs for manual testing. In the same place, the QA engineer communicates with the team. Here are the main ones:
- Jira;
- Bugzilla;
- Redmine.
Another QA engineer creates and analyzes screenshots using special tools. Here the specialist needs:
- Monosnap;
- Recordit API;
- Snagit;
- GreenShot.
Testing often requires different datasets. To do this, QA engineers use generator tools:
- Bugmagnet;
- Mockaroo.com.
Customer experience testing will show if the product is user friendly. Here is an application that helps you do it faster:
- Reflector;
- User Zoom;
- Loop.
QA engineers often use a checklist of tasks to avoid missing anything. To do this, they use:
- Sitechco;
- Testpad;
- Teamsuccess.
Mobile emulators are also tools for testing programs.
Mobile emulator is a software package that exactly copies all the functions of a mobile device.
QA engineers use the following mobile emulators in their work:
- World Wide Web;
- BrowserStack;
- CrossBrowserTesting;
- Mobile Phone Emulator.
Many applications use the API. – Approx. ed. To test it, a specialist needs:
- SoapUI;
- Postman.
Another important step in the verification of software development is security testing. Programs help with this:
- NetSparker;
- Acunetix Vulnerability Scanner;
- OWASP.
Load testing
Load testing checks how fast the system responds to an external request. This check shows whether the application or device meets the stated requirements. Help with this:
- Apache JMeter;
- WebLOAD;
- Micro-Focus Loadrunner.
Automated testing
Automated testing, or test automation, is a software testing method that is performed using special software tools. Such testing significantly reduces the time for finding bugs in comparison with manual testing. The following tools help in this:
- Selenium;
- TestComplete;
- Katalon Studio.
QA specialist’s typical working day plan
On his working day, a QA specialist performs the following tasks:
- Attends office meetings, plans tasks and makes reports on completed projects.
- Writes test cases. That is, it clearly describes the actions that need to be performed to test a particular function of the application. Perhaps it writes errors – depending on what stage the development of the program is at. He also tests programs or applications.
- Checks bug tracking systems for fixed bugs.
- Examines the wishes of the customer.
- Communicates with developers.
- Reads test documentation.
Pros and cons of the profession QA engineer
Anton Muzhailo, Quality Solutions Architect at GlobalLogic Ukraine, believes: A QA engineer sees the entire process of creating a product, so he understands how to create software and constantly improves his skills.
Among the disadvantages of the profession, he names the following:
- this is a creative work, which sometimes requires a non-standard approach;
- it is psychologically difficult to tell colleagues what they did wrong;
- it is difficult to show a physical product – the result of your work, which may cause motivation to fall.
How to become a QA engineer
You can study a specialty in Ukraine at the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Engineering or the Faculty of Applied Mathematics at KPI National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. – Approx. ed. For example, at the Department of System Programming and Specialized Computer Systems (SPSKS).
Anton Laponogov, QA engineer at Uklon, has no IT background. He believes that if you want to become a tester, you can take special courses. He also recommends the following materials for self-study:
- Dot Com Testing book by Roman Savin;
- Okiselev’s YouTube channel;
- Hillel IT School YouTube channel.
Artem Borodatyuk shares a beginner’s guide to QA from Netpeak Software. He also gives an algorithm on how to use it:
- study primary theory;
- explore the basic knowledge tab;
- keep track of all QA activities – this way you will find open days, internships and educational courses;
- go to all free events and to paid ones – if possible;
- send resumes to all QA beginner jobs and go to interviews until you get your first job.
It is also important to learn English in advance. Many companies can hire an intern without experience and education, if he knows English well. Therefore, even vacancies on many job search resources are in English.
Vacancies for QA specialists. Source: jobs.dou.ua
You know the theory of QA engineering well if you can answer the questions:
- what is testing and what are its goals;
- what is a bug and what is its life cycle;
- what are the types of testing;
- what documentation is used when searching for errors.
QA improves the development process, because it is important for him to have skills:
- developer – he must understand how the functionality of the application can be technically limited and at least superficially understand the code;
- business analyst – he must understand the market and the target audience in order to anticipate the customer’s path in the new program;
- project manager – to understand why they do this or that work.
Career prospects
QA engineers can develop in three directions:
- Learn new areas of programming and grow as a QA in this sequence:
- junior QA;
- middle QA;
- senior QA;
- QA team lead;
- QA manager;
- head of QA department.
- Master automated testing and develop in this direction.
- Retrain as a business analyst or programmer.
There are more than 500 vacancies for QA of various levels on the robota.ua website in Ukraine.
Source: robota.ua
There are more than 9 on DOU00.

Another QA engineer can combine his main job with teaching or consulting.
How much does a QA engineer earn
According to the DOU, the average salary for a junior QA engineer is $600. The average salary of a specialist with 1–3 years of experience is more than $1.5 thousand. Seniors earn about $2. 8 thousand. , and in Ukraine – 19.5 thousand
Depending on experience and skills, the djinni job search site lists salaries for QA specialists from $500 to $7 thousand. On average, testers earn $3.5 thousand.

Junior entry requirements to the profession
According to the Netpeak Group QA knowledge map, junior QA should know:
- differences between QA and QC testing;
- principles of testing;
- the most important concepts;
- software life cycle;
- development methodology;
- test design techniques;
- test artifacts;
- bug life cycle.
Optional but desirable to understand what verification and validation are and how to work with the decision table.
Junior should also know the following types of testing:
- functional;
- assembly testing;
- security testing;
- interaction testing;
- load;
- smoke;
- sanitary;
- regression;
- configuration.
From the protocols, the junior QA engineer should know:
- server response codes;
- HTTPS;
- HTTP.
Conclusion
The QA engineer profession is one of the c specialties that allows you to start working in IT without technical training. The task of a QA specialist is to monitor the quality of the product at all stages of development.
To find out what exactly he does, you can take special courses or find the information yourself. For example, study books, watch YouTube channels, read articles on this topic, and so on. You can also find out what paid and free events are taking place in your city and online and try to attend them.
You can start working in QA as a manual tester, and later switch to an automated one. To do this, you need to know English, understand the protocols and know what is most important in testing. This work helps to understand how software is made, but on the other hand, it can be psychologically difficult to tell people all the time where they made a mistake.
There are more than 900 vacancies for the position of QA in Ukraine. A beginner’s salary starts at $500. An experienced tester can earn more than $2.8 thousand
Work as a programmer in Germany: salary, opportunities in IT
Programmer moved to Germany. Demand for IT-specialists in the German labor market. Overview of the average level of German salaries in the IT sector.
The needs of the German labor market for programmers and other IT specialists have not been satisfied for a couple of decades. Every tenth of all vacancies in Germany is for software developers. On average, vacancies remain unfilled for 167 days – almost half a year.
Which programmers are in demand in Germany
Due to an acute shortage of personnel, even university graduates will be able to find work in Germany. But seniors are more likely to get a work contract quickly.
Experts in programming with knowledge will easily receive an offer:
- modern JavaScript frameworks;
- Java and related development technologies;
- SQL and databases;
- C and C++;
- Python and the principles of working with large amounts of unstructured information.
But those who know other languages, such as Ruby, Kotlin, PHP, will not be left without offers. Often, companies even agree to retrain new employees if they have proved the promise of the idea at the stage of acquaintance.
Therefore, for IT workers, in addition to professional skills, it is necessary to prepare a high-quality resume and know a foreign language in order to pass an interview. In programming, fluent English is often needed first of all. For other positions without German, it is harder to find options.
It is unrealistic to get a job in Germany without knowledge of foreign languages. There are very few Russian-speaking companies and finding such a vacancy is like luck in the lottery.
It is better to search for vacancies on Google with reference to the city and adding your skills. For example, münchen entwickler java. Keywords for programmer position:
- Programmer.
- Software Entwickler.
- Software Engineer.
- Developer.
- Coder.
Regardless of the knowledge of programming languages, remember: people are in demand. If a person knows how to program, relearning is a matter of time. Firms prefer to hire employees who are ready to get down to business right away. But it’s all about value for money. The same giant of the German labor market SAP often hires mathematicians and physicists, and then completes their education according to its own system of courses.
The terms of the employment contract in Germany depend on the specific company. Before signing a contract, be sure to figure out where and on what conditions you are going. The most effective way is to read reviews on the Internet and ask around former or current employees of the company. Don’t think that Germany is better anyway.
Careful preparation increases the chances of finding pleasant conditions. But it is not worth counting on getting a managerial position without good knowledge of the German language over time. Start learning German early.
Moving to Germany to work as a programmer without education
But without a profile diploma of higher education, it is quite possible to come to work as a programmer. The shortage of IT workers in Germany is so high that the government passed a law allowing the issuance of a German work visa for IT workers, bypassing the usual rules.
Other specialists are required to have a recognized German education suitable for the position found in order to obtain a work permit. IT workers are also entitled to prove qualifications by fulfilling two conditions:
- It is necessary to prove that for the last 8 years at least 3 years the person worked in IT.
- The salary in the work contract offered by the German employer is above 4260€ per month.
If both conditions are met, the foreigner is allowed to work in Germany regardless of education according to the law §19c AufenthG.
The chances of finding a job in Germany for a programmer without a specialized education are considerable. No wonder this law was passed. If you managed to show the required level of skills at the interview, the absence of a diploma from a German employer will not confuse you.
But ceteris paribus, the owner of the crust is more likely to be offered a higher salary and career prospects for educated applicants are also higher.
IT salaries in Germany
Shortage of workers favorably affects the growth of wages.
The salaries of information security specialists are growing by 6.5% for the year, the system administrator – by 4.8%, the ABAP programmer for the SAP system – by 4.5%. And this is considering that the salaries are already high compared to other brunches!
In managerial positions, the amounts reach six figures. The head of the IT department with 6-10 years of age receives up to 120 thousand euros per year gross. IT Director with more than 10 years of experience – 170,000 €.
However, not everyone gets the dream salary. Annual income growth in Germany is also not a rule. For example, network administrators with three years of work experience without higher education receive an annual income of less than 22,000€, including allowances.
Potential immigrants ask: what salary to ask for a programmer at an interview. According to German tradition, nothing is written about salary in the job description. A foreigner easily gets into a mess by requesting an inadequate amount, as he has no idea about German realities. There is no simple recipe. It is necessary to compare the average salaries of specialists of similar qualifications.
Average salaries of programmers by state Earth Gross per year € Hesse 55498 Baden-Württemberg 55413 Hamburg 54213 Bavaria 53734 North Rhine-Westphalia 51889 Rhineland-Palatinate 50313 Bremen 49281 Saarland 48850 Berlin 48141 Lower Saxony 47036 Schleswig-Holstein 45184 Thuringia 41536 Saxony 41006 Brandenburg 40668 Saxony-Anhalt 40278 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 38991 It can be seen that IT representatives will find the highest salary in the south of Germany. But the cost of living there is more expensive.
Top 10 IT salaries by employer niche
Now companies, regardless of the brunch, cannot do without IT specialists. When applying for a job in Germany, it is important to know that IT professionals are paid differently depending on the accepted salaries in the niche of the employer.

- There are many admins in Germany among the Germans themselves. It is more difficult for a foreigner to get a position.
- Consultants are IT workers in Germany who help start and develop projects, implement programs, and optimize. The most important skill is communication with clients. It is difficult for a foreigner without a German language to qualify for consulting right away.
- The most realistic target for a foreigner is programmers-coders. Pure programming skills are important here, and the level of German and education are not the most important thing.
- Also not a hopeless niche for a foreigner – testers. Especially when it comes to automation. If a person knows how to automate, he is practically a programmer. Therefore, sensible people do not linger on such specialization for a long time and move on to a promotion.
The lack of programmers and other IT professionals is leading to a rapid increase in wages in this industry.
The salary of a programmer in Germany is 3468-4880€
Softwareentwickler Software Developer covers a wide range of professional programmers. Any person who makes a living writing code calls himself a programmer. But sometimes the differences within the profession are very significant. It is better to focus on indicators for specific languages or technologies.
Programmers mostly work in Germany after graduating. There are also a number of training programs for secondary vocational training in specific areas.
Java Developer — 3387-4227€
Java programmer gets huge job opportunities. Language technologies allow you to program a complete stack of applications, from the server side to the front end.
The java programmer is also unlimited in terms of branches. In the age of the Internet of Things, Java is installed in every iron! And programming mobile applications in Java is one of the most trendy activities in our time.
C/C++ programmer — 3117-4492€
In Germany, it is realistic to get the profession of a programmer not only as a higher education, but also as a specialized secondary. C/C++ programmer or C-Programmierer is one such specialty.
The use of the C language in information technology is a fairly common thing.
A well-versed C++ programmer will easily switch to a related programming language, such as Java or C#.
Web Developer – 2815-4051€
The concept of a web programmer is quite broad and includes both developers of Internet sites from a database to HTML, as well as specialists in setting up existing content management systems.
There is no special education for this profession in Germany.
The earnings of a web programmer in Germany are difficult to estimate. Any student can build websites, earn a few hundred a month, and be considered a web programmer. At the same time, there are complex Internet systems that require special skills and professionals whose salaries are quite high.
Database programmer – 3418-4882€
Development, configuration and programming of databases is a separate area of knowledge in IT. In cases where the significance and number of tasks in the field of data is significant, the company allocates a separate place for a specialist. Often, the application architect or one of the back-end developers is responsible for the database.
The most important issues that a database programmer has to solve are increasing the performance of an application, structuring data, and distributing the load on the system.
ABAP programmer – 3342-5025€
ABAP is SAP’s internal language in which the large enterprise management system is written. In addition to books and the Internet, you can learn the ABAP programming language in courses from SAP, which cost a lot of money. Therefore, ABAPers get quite a lot.
Experienced ABAP programmers can easily find jobs in Germany if they can communicate in English or German. There are a lot of companies working with SAP. And the best employer in the IT field itself provides many jobs.
Big Data Specialist – 3108-4839€
Big data specialist is a new profession in high demand in Germany. Big data is quadrillions of bytes that are generated daily in various formats.
Many organizations have vast arrays in various areas that are not structured and therefore difficult to analyze automatically.
Software architect — 4679-6445€
Software Architect Softwarearchitekt is the pinnacle of a career for a software engineer. There are few good architects, so the profession is paid accordingly.
It is not possible to study software architecture at a university. Such a specialist should understand not only existing developments, but also look far into the future, understand programming development trends, follow innovations and evaluate them correctly. To do this, in addition to education, you will have to gain experience, and significant.
System administrator – 3019-4433€
The system administrator is responsible for the IT infrastructure. He is the main “hardware”, setting up and maintaining computers, servers, printers and other equipment. He is also responsible for access to the Internet, local networks, email.
Now any enterprise has office workers who sit at computers. Therefore, the profession of a system administrator in Germany is in demand in all brunches.

The services of recruitment agencies will come in handy if you have a unique expertise and run the risk of cheapening your salary. For example, a SAP consultant is unlikely to find a better position on his own than through headhunters. But in the usual case, a well-prepared resume is enough to get an invitation to an interview.
There is hardly any other field of activity where moving to Germany is easier than in IT. But if you have any questions, we are happy to help in the comments to the article or on the project forum.
A foreigner has the right to enter a German university for an IT specialty. After completing their education, the immigrant will have a year and a half to look for work in Germany. But in this sector, as a rule, graduate students already know where they will receive a work contract.
Alternatively, if higher education in Germany is not affordable, you can enroll in the Ausbildung secondary vocational training in the direction of Fachinformatiker or another IT-related specialty. The specific name of the profession does not play a special role. Secondary education also makes it possible to look for a job for 18 months. There will be no problems with offers, although career growth is easier if you have a university diploma. But a significant plus of training in Ausbildung is the salary that is paid for the practice.
If a foreigner already lives in Germany and is considering a new career direction, a change of profession is also possible. Often, the unemployed are offered to take retraining courses in the field of IT from Jobcenter. The Internet creates many favorable opportunities for learning. It is enough to search YouTube for the programming section of interest to get training materials for hundreds of hours of viewing. Don’t neglect this opportunity.
Personal experience as a programmer in Germany
Before moving to Germany in 2002, I worked as a programmer in the St. Petersburg office of Siemens Nixxdorf. One of the German managers decided to set up a company in Germany and invited the workers to move. About 40 people agreed, me too. This is a rather atypical way to get to Germany. Usually programmers look for work remotely.
The new boss has leased us to the SAP software company. We worked for the company as external employees, but we sat in the company’s office, writing and correcting internal code. Only the salary was received not in SAP, but from the boss’s company.
After working for 3.5 years, I gradually lost motivation and changed jobs. Worked for ICW for 11 years. The company produces software for various areas of electronic health monitoring. I was engaged in the development and localization of programs. He helped to write code so that the software could be installed and launched without major problems in any country in the world.
In 2016, he was made redundant. The medical IT market in Germany is developing at a slower pace than expected 10 years ago. Investors left the firm, the budget was cut and another job had to be found. For 3 weeks there were 3 suitable options. Chose brunch of banking software. A start-up company is in a phase of active growth on the money of investors. It’s funny that a year later the new company moved to the office where I worked 5 of the 11 years at ICW, only one floor up.
After 2 years, due to disagreements with the boss, he changed jobs again. I was looking for a place in companies located inside the building. Two options emerged. Soon moved two floors down. I wrote an application for headhunters in Java and Angular.
In February 2020, I ended my career as a programmer and became an entrepreneurial blogger.

Bloomberg publication has published a ranking of the countries of the world according to the level of income of programmers in 50 countries of the world ( Highest-Paid Software Engineers: Countries ). The list includes countries for which Bloomberg experts managed to find the most accurate data. The average salary of programmers in the table below is compared with the average income in this country (based on GDP per capita data). Thus, it is possible to single out countries where programmers remain with their salaries in the greatest gain against the background of all other professions in the country.
When calculating the average annual salary of programmers, all incomes received during the year were taken into account in total: rate, bonuses, bonuses, allowances, etc. At the same time, various intangible “buns” (like free food, a gym or health insurance) were not included in the final annual income. Bloomberg analysts also clarify that their statistics took into account software developers with an average work experience of 2 to 5 years. Thus, newcomers to the profession and the top programmers were not included in the sample. Data are given for 2014

Profession portrait
Backend developer is the most common specialization among respondents (27%).
The top 3 also includes mobile and fullstack developers.
Specialization
In Kazakhstan, development can be called the industry of millennials and zoomers, as the vast majority of survey respondents noted that they are under 30 years old.
Most people aged 30+ are in DevOps/SRE and system administration.
DevOps/SRE specialists, if they change specialization, which happens very rarely, usually go into management.
Age
Young specialists aged 18–20 are the most among fullstack developers.
Beginners usually want to try different roles. Fullstack is perfect for this.
Gender
This is the “merit” of our mentality and the past. The situation is starting to change, and many programs for women in IT are driving this, such as Women Techmakers, which is actively promoted by Google. In my teams, the situation is similar to the data from the analysis.
Why are there so few women in engineering?
Alfa-Bank Kazakhstan
Andrey Gusakov,
This is probably due to the fact that public opinion still considers IT to be a male profession. Perhaps the pressure begins at the stage of choosing a specialty. There are simply fewer girls entering IT universities. The analysis data corresponds to the number of women in IT in our company, although the trend has changed recently.
Beeline Kazakhstan
Andrey Voloshin,
According to the study, the difference between genders is 6 times, and according to EPAM data, there is a difference, but with a smaller gap – 3 times. Men prefer such professions as a developer, DevOps – they are more “engineering” and technically complex. Ladies are more willing to work as quality engineers and analysts.
EPAM Kazakhstan
Vyacheslav Vasilenko,
There are specializations where there are more girls, and there are, conditionally, purely male ones. For example, I have never met female system administrators, although I heard that they exist. On the contrary, there are almost more girls in our testing team than guys. I can assume that this is due to their greater perseverance and attention to detail.
Kolesa Group
Igor Borodikhin,
We see that more than half (61%) of respondents work up to 3 years (inclusive). This means that the market is very young and just beginning to develop.
These data correlate with the average age of the respondents (26), many of whom are likely recent university graduates. Universities have become more active in preparing developers, which is why the market has become more young professionals.
Experience
Most of the specialists (88%) working in development are located in Almaty and Nur-Sultan, the two most economically active cities in the country.
Location
Many universities that produce IT specialists are located in Almaty. After graduation, graduates go to work in small and large IT companies, banks, insurance companies, their offices are also mainly located in the southern capital.
Alfa-Bank Kazakhstan
Andrey Gusakov,
Education
More than half (65%) of respondents indicated that they had completed only a bachelor’s degree. One fifth of the respondents also have a master’s degree.
23% of frontend developers and 21% of system administrators have only secondary education, in other specializations this indicator ~ is 2 times lower.
Most developers – more than 90% – are graduates of Kazakh universities. The most popular among them are MUIT, SDU and KazNTU.
Educational institutions
SDU students are the best prepared to start effective work. They know how the development process works, are disciplined, and ask the right questions.
Which university produces the best trained specialists?
Alfa-Bank Kazakhstan
Andrey Gusakov,
The culture of training developers in universities is still developing, so it cannot be said that there is any one market leader.
Beeline Kazakhstan
Andrey Voloshin,
The best level of knowledge and training in the company is distinguished by specialists not trained in Kazakhstan. Over the years, the experience of a specialist becomes more important than a university. Beginning specialists who graduated from MUIT, SDU, KBTU, KSTU have good knowledge.
EPAM Kazakhstan
Vyacheslav Vasilenko,
According to the experience of interviews and work with graduates: the most promising guys come from KBTU, SDU and MUIT. However, everyone has to finish their education under the modern realities of development. A university can only provide fundamental knowledge. The industry is changing too dynamically to be able to make a curriculum and successfully teach it for several years in a row.
Kolesa Group
Igor Borodikhin,
69% of respondents indicated that they know English. 2% know Russian less. Slightly more than half (57%) of the respondents speak Kazakh.
The popularity of a particular language among developers is associated with the availability of documentation and professional communities in this language. Unfortunately, there are far fewer Kazakh-speaking professional communities than Russian- and English-speaking ones.
Knowledge of languages
98% of SDU graduates know English, this is the highest indicator. They are more likely than graduates of other universities to work abroad.
The average indicator is 6% , among SDU graduates – 11%.Profession level
More than half (57%) of developers work in small teams of up to 10 people.
Size of companies and IT departments
More than half of respondents work in IT. In second place is the financial sector.
Industry
in the “Other” point most often indicated:
• Neftegaz
from 11 to 50 people.In retail, this figure is on average 10 times lower.
In outsourcing IT companies, almost all employees are involved in development.
Size of companies and departments by industry
Most specialists ( 42% ) indicated that they themselves are senior specialists* (senior).
But at the same time, the average level of employees in the development departments, in their opinion, corresponds to the middle level.
Intermediate level of IT-specialists
*Senior specialist: he makes a project of any complexity, consisting of one or more tasks. Advises interns and mid-level specialists.
Average level of IT specialists by industry
Average level of IT specialists by industry
Grades
Does the company have clearly defined requirements for knowledge and skills in accordance with junior, middle, senior levels?
In my opinion, clear grades are useful for both the company and employees. From the point of view of the employer, they give an answer to the question of whether this or that specialist is worthy of the money that the company spends on him.
For a specialist, grades remove the question of how to grow, what to study in order to be worth more in the market and in the company.
Kolesa Group
Igor Borodikhin,
Only mature and large companies realize the need for grading. In addition, its implementation requires resource-intensive joint work of HR and IT teams. Not everyone can afford it.
This is confirmed by data on the size of companies and departments: only 46% of respondents work in relatively large companies, where grading is most likely introduced.
Alfa-Bank Kazakhstan
Andrey Gusakov,
The level of development in companies
In my opinion, the respondents are exaggerating a little. I think there are more companies on the market with an average level of development.
Beeline Kazakhstan
Andrey Voloshin,
In addition to the main functional duties, most specialists are also involved in automation, testing and development management.

DevOps specialists are less involved in development management than others.Functional responsibilities
Most often, product managers and department heads assign tasks to developers.
Source of task setting
If a company does not have a dedicated product or project manager position, developers are forced to set their own tasks.
I think this is typical for small, young companies. As development matures, a narrower specialization comes with the allocation of product or project managers.

Igor Borodikhin,
JIRA is the absolute leader among project management systems in Kazakhstani development.
Task Management Systems
We practice the Agile approach. In it, developers set tasks for themselves.
The development process is an ambiguous thing, and it is impossible to predict a lot in the analysis process. Therefore, products and business analysts prepare a description of the functionality that they would like to offer users, and the development team itself decides how to implement it.The team independently schedules tasks in Jira, the service is ideal for this process.
Alfa-Bank Kazakhstan
Andrey Gusakov,
More than half (61%) of development teams use the Agile approach.
Waterfall is used by only 6%.
Development methodologies
The choice of development management model is usually dictated by the company’s management model. It is practically impossible to build an agile development if the whole company works on a “waterfall”. In such a situation, development can act as the initiator of change, but the whole organization will have to change.
Most likely, those companies whose employees answered that they do not know what methodology they use, or do not use any at all, use the waterfall model.

CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery) – system for building, testing and delivering code to Production.
Ability to continuously (several times a day) merge working copies of code into a common master branch and continuously test the results. CI / CD allows you to increase the speed of the solution production process and its quality.
Development methodologies
More than a third (34%) of respondents indicated that their companies do not use CI/CD. Among those who use, GitLab CI is the most popular (33%).
About the lack of experience in building CI / CD, the lack of DevOps specialists who are able to build these processes, and most importantly, about the lack of understanding of what CI / CD is needed for and what effect it can bring.
34% of Kazakhstani developers do not use CI/CD. What does it say?

Short-term projects on order, freelancing. In this kind of project, there may not be a need or request to set up CI/CD.

Low engineering culture in the company, developers do not see any advantages, no one trained either developers or managers and did not allocate resources for setting up processes.

Popularity of programming languages
in Kazakhstan and abroadSpecialists working for foreign companies, unlike Kazakhstani ones, use Python more often and less – PHP. And another 34% of Kazakhstani mobile developers use Java/ObjectiveC, while abroad these languages, like PHP, are becoming a thing of the past (only 21% of respondents use them).
PHP is losing popularity in the world, but its popularity in Kazakhstan indicates the initial stage of maturity of the local IT market, as well as the level of needs that are now closing.
PHP is Web-oriented, has a low threshold of entry and a large number of CMS, template engines that simplify the creation of sites, mostly entry-level.

Vyacheslav Vasilenko,
Javascript, certainly had to take one of the leading places as a de facto standard in front-end development. Somewhat surprisingly, Java/ObjectiveC outpaced the Kotlin/Swift pair. I also expected to see 9 in the top three0138 Python, but it wasn’t there.
About Kotlin/Swift, Python, Go
If we omit Python, other languages are relatively young, although quite hype.
Their lesser popularity is most likely due to some inertia in corporate development. Business always prioritizes product development over technical excellence, because customers don’t buy technical excellence.Kotlin and Swift are used for mobile development and are actively promoted by the community. It is expedient to launch new products on them. Python is a scripting language that has now found a rebirth in Data Science/Machine Learning. For Kazakhstan, this is a young industry with great potential.
Go is primarily a language for creating a fast, highly loaded backend. As local products appear that require backend speed, it will be increasingly used.Kolesa Group

Average and median salary levels by specialization
Salaries directly depend on the position level. Interns earn on average 146 thousand tenge , and technical directors – 1.3 million tenge . Mobile developers have the highest median salaries ( 450 thousand tenge ), and system administrators have the lowest ( 250 thousand tenge ).
Probably, the level of salaries by specialization is connected with the demand for certain specialists from the market. For example, mobile applications are now at the peak of popularity, which increases the demand for mobile developers and their salaries.
Average salary based on seniority
Developers reach the salary cap for 6 years of experience.
The most dynamic growth occurs in the first 3 years.
The salary of specialists from foreign companies is, on average, twice as high as the salary of specialists working in the local market.
Bonuses
More often than others, testers/QA engineers receive monthly bonuses, and 9 project results bonuses0138 backend developers.
frontend developers receive the least awards.
More than a third of respondents (33%) noted that they do not receive bonuses. Another 15% do not understand how the bonus system works in their companies.
Salary increase
How long ago was your salary increased?
73% of respondents noted that their salary was reviewed at least once during the last year.
Willingness to change jobs
On average, respondents change jobs every 2.5 years.
Most of the respondents are young professionals, millennials.
In the culture of millennials – frequent switching between tasks, the desire to get everything here and now, personal interests trump collective ones. An advantageous offer allows you to achieve personal goals faster. All this is multiplied by the high demand for IT specialists.EPAM Kazakhstan
Vyacheslav Vasilenko,
Important points when choosing a job
The most important point when choosing a job for most developers (76%) is salary and social package.
The choice is also influenced by the team, the availability of development opportunities and the product to be worked on.
People want to earn more, work with strong teams and interesting projects, and learn. Now the market is so overheated that companies are competing hard for people, playing these three factors.
Alfa-Bank Kazakhstan
Andrey Gusakov,
Motivation. What inspires you at work?
Interestingly, salary is the main factor in choosing a job, but fades into the background when this choice has already been made. Further, developers are driven by development (34%) and the benefits they bring (33%).
In order to develop personnel, but not to lose them, a whole range of measures is needed: developing a dev community within the company, building a motivating culture, encouraging knowledge sharing, the opportunity for each employee to discuss their individual development plan with the manager, to be able to move within the company between projects… There are many directions, you need to build a map of opportunities and systematically implement it.

Paying for training in companies
63% of companies in one way or another invest in the development of employees and their professional development.
I think in many companies there is no understanding of the benefits of training and developing specialists. After all, a more qualified specialist costs more and is more in demand in the labor market. It takes a lot of effort to keep it.
However, all this negativity is covered by the speed and quality of the software that this specialist is able to create.
