Greg Egan (full name – Gregory Mark Egan / Gregory Mark Egan) was born on August 20, 1961 in Perth (Australia). As a teenager, he read books by Philip Dick, Samuel Delaney, Alfred Bester, Brian Aldiss, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Harlan Ellison, Urusula le Guin – they were his favorite writers. Then he switched to Kurt Vonnegut and Larry Niven, and then, gradually moving away from science fiction, he began to read David Ireland, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Joseph Heller, Thomas Pynchon. But after reading Greg Beer’s story “Music in the Blood”, he returned to SF again.

Egan decided to become a scientist at the age of six, and after leaving school he entered the University of Western Australia, where he received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. After that, he decided to make his own film, using the money earned over several years when he moonlighted as a delivery truck for milk. After purchasing the film rights to Out of the Flying Pan (an absurdist play by British writer David Campton) for $1,000, Egan eventually filmed an 8mm tape of his own script. It was a satirical picture of a referendum deciding whether the human race should destroy itself by annihilation. Egan’s relatives and friends starred in the film, and all voice acting and dialogue were recorded later. After finishing the film, Egan used it to enroll in the Australian Film and Television School, but after studying for about four weeks, he decided he hated the film industry. In the next six months, Egan looked for work, along the way, he admitted, writing several bad stories. He eventually landed a job as a research programmer at the Sydney Hospital, where he worked for four and a half years in a society of doctors and biochemists, writing fantasy stories. At 19In 1983, his first published novel was Under an Unusual Perspective , a mainstream with a bit of fantasy about a high school student who “learned how to make movies in his head.”

In 1987, Greg Egan returned to his hometown, where for some time he combined the work of a writer and a programmer. In 1990, he wrote his eighth novel, Quarantine, a fantasy detective story, the first book he said he was happy with. This novel was published two years later, and yet, despite favorable reviews, Egan hesitated to switch completely to literary activity for some time, partly due to the fact that he always wrote very slowly and was not sure if he could live on royalties. professional writer. In subsequent years, Greg Egan wrote several more novels, published several collections of short stories, and at 19In 1999, he received the Hugo Award (as well as the Locus Award and Asimovs Readers Awards) for the story “Oceanic”, becoming one of the most famous Australian science fiction writers.

Egan writes hard science fiction, focusing on topics related to mathematics, quantum mechanics, the nature of consciousness, genetics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and the relationship between rational materialism and religion.

In recent decades, Greg Egan’s work has seen more and more panoramic visions of the post-human distant future. So at 19In 1997, one of the author’s strongest novels was released – “Diaspora”, an unrecognized classic of modern science fiction, a space opera with a Stapledonian flavor, opening up new horizons in the genre.
