Ya Friday: SOUR | San Jose Public Library

Presented
Megan Minor
on
Fri, 07 – 16:2021

Released May 21, SOUR is the debut album by Olivia Rodrigo of High School Musical: The Musical: Series fame.

Rodrigo’s favorite genres and songwriters inspire the songs on the album. These are primarily pop and alt-pop records that range from high-energy pop punk songs to bedroom pop ballads. Its theme is centered on failed romances of adolescence and heartache. She said the album explores her dangers and discoveries at the age of 17. Its name refers to the “sour” emotions that young people experience but are often criticized for, such as anger, jealousy, and unhappiness.

Rodrigo said about the album:

I really feel like this is the best thing I can do right now. I wrote one song when I was sixteen and one song when I was eighteen, but I wrote most of them when I was seventeen. It is very much like a part of my life at that moment.

This makes it the perfect album to pair with some of our favorite teen fiction. Be sure to check out the songs and books below and comment on them with your favorites!

1. brutal

The first track is Olivia Rodrigo’s punk rock about generational trauma. Rodrigo sings about the misleading promises of youth, including all the betrayals, disappointments and problems in our “golden years”. The title “It’s Rough in Here” alludes to both the rough music industry and the difficult world of adolescence. Olivia is learning to navigate both.

Kind of like a fine Spencer Hall

Senior year of high school is full of changes.

For Hayley Mills, these changes are not entirely welcome. All she wants is for everyone to forget about her public breakdown and remember her like a sheep. For who she once was – and who she intends to be again. But it’s hard to look adventurous when she’s being forced into TV production with all the slackers like Lewis Holbrook.

However, for Lewis it would be his . After a summer spent watching 80s movies, he’s ready to move from being a self-proclaimed fat and funny friend to being the star of his life – girlfriend included. The only thing standing in his way is himself.

When these two are together in class, neither of them is particularly excited. But then they start making mini-documentaries about their classmates’ hidden talents, and all of a sudden, Hayley is getting attention for something other than her breakdown, and Lewis isn’t just a background guy.racter anymore. It seems like they are both finally getting what they want – besides what happens when you don’t become who you really are?

2nd tritor

On the aptly titled second track, Olivia Rodrigo reflects on what went wrong in past relationships, feelings of betrayal and how she still lacks what she had. The piano ballad became popular upon release, with many fans and the media speculating who the song was about, with most suspects going to be Joshua Bassett.

Why we broke up Daniel Handler, illustrated by Myra Kalman

I’m telling you why we broke up, Ed. I write in this letter the whole truth about why this happened.

Min Green and Ed Slaterton broke up, so Min writes Ed a letter and gives him a box. Inside the box is the reason they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and all the other items collected during a dizzying, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item by item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a friend, is thrown away.

3. driving license.

This song is the first single and third track in the album. It’s a possible ode to love that Rodrigo abandoned his former relationship with Joshua Bassett, who is now allegedly dating Sabrina Carpenter, by doing the last thing she promised him – get a driver’s license. The song strikes a brilliant balance of unfiltered outpouring and grac full specificity. The accompanying music video is a vivid portrait of Rodrigo driving aimlessly, longing for a former love.

Geography of Lost Items Jessica Brodie

After Ali’s father passed away, he left his only valuable possession, a 1968 Firebird convertible, to his daughter. But Ali has no plans to leave him. Not when it reminds her too much of her father’s broken promises. So when she finds a buyer 300 miles from the Pacific coast willing to pay enough money for a car to save her childhood home, Ali can’t wait to get started. But Ali has no idea how to operate the gear lever. But guess who does it?

Ali’s ex-boyfriend, Niko. Nico has other plans.

He convinces Ali that instead of selling the car, they should “trade” the items they collect on the trip in order to eventually get the amount of money Ali needs. Agreeing with Niko’s crazy plan, Ali embarks on a unique adventure unlike anything she could have expected.

And it is through Ali’s travels, the strangers she meets and the things they value – and why they value them – that Ali eventually comes to understand her father and that his life may not have been so easy and carefree, as she thought before. Just as with the seemingly insignificant items Ali collects, not everything is as it seems.

4. 1 step forward, 3 steps back

The fourth track “k” talks about the ups and downs in life and the problem of building a relationship with an inconsistent partner, because every time Olivia takes a step forward to her real love, she immediately feels pushed away from her goals.

Seven TorCops Amy and Craig Don Zolidis

Janesville, Wisconsin (cold in the sense that there is no God)
1994

The worst thing that ever happened to Craig is also the best: Amy. Amy and Craig were never meant to date. Craig is a clumsy Dungeons & Dragons geek and Amy is a beautiful, very smart and smart president of their high school.

But somehow they did it. Until Amy left him. Then he returned to him. Then they threw him out again. Then they got back together with him. Again and again and again.

Amy and Craig’s exuberant and tumultuous relationship unfolds over the course of their senior year, a kaleidoscope of joy, pain and laughter as an uncertain future and adult responsibility loom on the horizon.

Craig fights for his dream of escaping Janesville and finding his place in an unusual college, while Amy’s quest to discover her true self sometimes involves playing Craig’s girlfriend? And sometimes not.

5. deja vu

This song is the fifth rack and the second single from the album. This song finds Olivia at a different stage than her predecessor, as she begins to walk away from grief. Olivia questions both the authenticity of her ex’s new relationship and their emotions towards their new girlfriend. She also portrays feelings of pity for this new girl who experiences nothing unique with her lover.

The secret recipe for moving forward Karen Bisher

Housekeeping is supposed to be Ellie Agresti’s easy five, but like her imperfect soufflé, her plans are epicly thwarted when her boyfriend Hunter dumps her. Now Ellie needs to mend her broken heart by watching Huntsman impersonate her new friend Brynn in class. To make matters worse, Ellie partners with four of the biggest losers in school: Jeremy, a screamer with personality issues; Isaiah, solemn, silent horse racist; Andrew, who does not tolerate rejection; and Luke, a giant tattooed stunt biker.

Over the course of the semester, Ellie tries to overcome her feelings for Hunter, as well as the deeper insecurities that have haunted her since high school. Weeks go by and she is surprised to find friendship in unexpected places…and sparks fly with the last guy she expected.

6. good 4 u

This song is the sixth track and is the third single from the album. The hook of the song is laced with sarcasm as Olivia snaps at her ex-partner for quickly breaking up with their relationship without too much trouble or any concern for her at all. Its unsettling pop-rock sound has been compared to 2000s acts like Paramore and Avril Lavigne.

Perfect Parvin Olivia Abtahi

Parvin’s heart just broke when she meets the cutest boy in her new high school, Matty Fumero, with a focus on fumero because he could be smoking hot medicine from all her boy’s problems. If Parveen can get Matty to invite her home, she’s sure it will erase all the terrible and awkward feelings that He Who Shall Not Be Named left her with after the summer. The only problem is that Matty is definitely too cool for a bassoon-playing curly-haired parveen eating Cheeto. Since she hasn’t been able to be herself in the past (see Relationships above), she decides that being the girl who finally gets a guy, she should start acting like the women of her favorite rom-coms. These girls are not noisy, they certainly don’t cackle when they laugh, and they smile a lot more than they talk. Simple enough, right?

But as Parveen struggles to get through her parents’ prescribed weekend Farsi lessons, a nascent friendship with a boy that she can’t help but deal with, and deal with the aftermath of a Muslim ban on her family in Iran, she understands. after all, being yourself can be just the perfect thing.

7. enough for you

The seventh track describes the extra effort she put in to be enough for her lover, comparing herself to former lovers, only to have her lover leave her for someone else. She feels heartbroken, but knows that in the end her lover will be heartbroken.

Laura Dean breaks up with me Mariko Tamaki, illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O’Connell

The day they got together was the best day of Freddie’s life, but nothing has made sense since. Laura Dean is popular, funny and SO CUTE…but she can be really flippant, even rude. Their constant and ongoing relationship makes Freddie dizzy and Freddie’s friends can’t figure out why she keeps coming back.

When Freddie enlists the services of the local mystic, the mysterious Seek-Her, she is not happy with the advice she receives. But something has to be given: Freddie’s heart breaks in slow motion, and she may be about to lose her best friend, as well as the last piece of self-respect. Luckily for Freddie, Freddie made new friends and the sagacity of adviser Anna Weiss helped her become a lovesick teenager.

8. happier

In this song, Olivia wishes all the best to her ex-lover and their new relationship, but at the same time hopes that it will remain a significant memory in their lives. The entire album is full of songs ostensibly addressed to Bassett, revealing Rodrigo’s grief when he left her. By the eighth track, Rodrigo begins to realize that even if she wants him to return, it is doubtful that this will happen. Rodrigo wants him to know that even though she lets him go, she wants him to remember that she was the best he could ever get.

Imagine us happy Jennifer Yu

Stella is depressed. Her first year goals are largely limited to surviving academically, staying away from her parents’ constant bickering, and preventing unwanted feelings enough for her to hang out with her friends Lin and Cathy.

Until Kevin. A quiet, crooked senior who understands Stella and the experiences she goes through like no other. With him, she feels less lonely, obeys and hopes for the first time since …

But in order to keep this feeling alive, Stella releases her grades and her friendship falls apart. And soon she sees how deep the scars of Kevin himself are. Now small arguments are shattered. Major fights are catastrophic. And trying to keep everything together exhausts Stella to the limit. As her life spirals out of control, she needs to figure out what she really needs, what is worth saving, and what to let go.

9. jealousy, jealousy

The ninth track is about the unrealistic standards set by society for young people, especially young women, especially in social networks. On the track, Olivia sings about the constant comparisons and self-hatred that social media often leads to.

The choir rises Bethany S. Morrow

Teen influencer Naema Bradshaw has it all: she’s famous, she’s privileged, she’s got “good hair” – and she’s Eloko, a person gifted with a song that wins over anyone who hits her hears. Everyone loves her – until she becomes a terrible person who exposes Siren Tavia’s secret powers.

Now she is being dragged by the media. No one understands her side: not her boyfriend, not her friends, not her Eloko community. But Naema knows the truth and is determined to strengthen herself no matter what.

However, when a new, thriving segment of Naema’s online supporters begins to target black girls, Naema must discover the true purpose of her magical voice.

10. favorite crime

In the tenth track, Olivia Rodrigo demonstrates her lyricism by undermining the situation in which she finds herself. Since she implies that she is partially responsible for her grief because she allowed herself to be mistreated in the relationship, she begins the process to move on.

Bad Romance Heather Demetrios

Grace wants to leave. From her home, where her stepfather wields fear like a weapon and her mother forces her to wipe imaginary dirt off the floor. From her California town too small to accommodate her big city dreams. From her life and into the role of a Parisian artist, director of New York.tor- nothing but fear and loneliness.

Enter Gavin: charming, talented, adored. Controlling. Dangerous. When Grace and Gavin fall in love, Grace is sure it’s too good to be true. She has no idea that their relationship will become a prison from which she cannot escape.

11. I hope you’re okay

At the end of the track, Olivia reminisces about old friends, presumably from the LGBTQ+ community. Despite the loss of contact, she reminds them that things are not as bad as they seem, wishes them well, and assures them how proud she is of who they have become.

We used to be friends Amy Spaulding

At the beginning of their senior year in high school, James (a girl named boy) and Cat are inseparable, but by graduation they are no longer friends. For the past year, Cat wants nothing more than James to remain her stable support as James worries that everything she thinks about love and her future is a lie when her high school sweetheart parents announce they are divorcing. . James prepares to head off to college, contemplating the end of his friendship with Kat, while in alternating chapters, Kat thinks about falling in love with her first girlfriend and having an open future.
